[86.59] Richard "ycopter": I mean, I like being known as why copter because you know, it's sort of it's that's how I'm known by the online community
[93.67] Jack: But but I'm Richard. No worries. I'm just gonna call you why copter. I really like the name
[97.87] Jack: Why do you fly a tricopter even though you do have a quad copter in your arsenal?
[103.47] Richard "ycopter": Well, that's how I started I was I was started because of David Vinderstone
[108.91] Richard "ycopter": I mean he was a great influencer on me getting into the and not getting into the hobby because I started to fly
[115.39] Richard "ycopter": fixed-wing aircraft and I enjoyed that and and I still do fly fixed-wing every now and again, but
[123.51] Richard "ycopter": If I just enjoy the morture rotors so so much
[126.91] Richard "ycopter": The I thought I'd better find out and so the first thing I built was a was a tricopter and
[132.95] Richard "ycopter": I had a lot of fun with that and I built it
[137.03] Richard "ycopter": using for
[138.59] Richard "ycopter": Helicopter gyros. I've sort of just mixed it in the transmitter and got it all working and it worked pretty well
[144.71] Jack: And I've used that set up for about a year also with the analog gyros
[149.03] Jack: There was a lot more forgiving to the vibration whereas now there's a lot of digital things and they go a bit crazy
[154.67] Richard "ycopter": I think that's right. I think there were a lot more forgiving. They probably weren't weren't as sensitive
[159.67] Richard "ycopter": Which is probably probably a good thing
[161.35] Richard "ycopter": But but I got my first tricopter flying on that basis and it was absolutely fantastic machine
[166.01] Richard "ycopter": And that's what my early videos are based upon. But after a while, I found that everybody was flying a quadcopter
[172.05] Jack: Yeah, have you have you got a mini quads?
[175.17] Richard "ycopter": The other interesting thing

[178.13] Richard "ycopter": I've been flying really big machines and getting used to tuning them and I've been really enjoying them and and then the mini quad craze
[186.25] Richard "ycopter": Hit probably about a year ago. Yeah, and then I started seeing some videos and I was absolutely amazed at how
[194.99] Richard "ycopter": Stable people got the video so they were really getting them vibration free
[200.43] Richard "ycopter": But lots of power lots of speed and I thought like I thought when I moved from tricopters to quads
[206.55] Richard "ycopter": yeah, I thought I've got to give this a go to see if it is as good as it looks and
[211.71] Richard "ycopter": I think I got my first one flying which is a ZMR 250
[216.95] Richard "ycopter": I got that flying
[219.23] Richard "ycopter": about May time this year and
[221.43] Richard "ycopter": And
[222.79] Richard "ycopter": And and so now the thing that I enjoy flying more than anybody anything else is the 250. Yeah
[228.11] Jack: Yeah, I am
[229.23] Jack: I mean you must have a go-to craft that you kind of carry around with you or you know old faithful old reliable
[236.51] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, I have I mean it depends what I'm doing if I want some really good stable video then I've got a quad which is
[242.79] Richard "ycopter": I think it's about
[244.95] Richard "ycopter": 780 millimeters. Yeah, so it's quite a big machine
[248.83] Jack: And it's when everyone's running like two fifties. Yeah
[253.59] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, you could sort of I've got some two fifties on the wall here and you and in this in the the area that that cover
[259.67] Richard "ycopter": You could probably get about nine two fifties in the area that that one covers
[264.35] Jack: That's crazy. I mean I I first when I first like subbed up
[269.43] Jack: Yeah
[269.87] Jack: There was like I went to like the Hobby King festival flight and there was like one guy with a blackout
[275.95] Jack: Mini and that was it. There's no racing. No, nothing. So when I first started it was like inklings of all that
[282.23] Jack: And you know, we were all running like 450 sizes at least
[286.75] Jack: You know and the KK mini wasn't out and you know
[290.79] Jack: Like the best you could get was the the the hard case version and we all hated that. So it's quite funny
[297.35] Jack: It's unbelievable where the hobbies kind of moved to how did you start with?
[301.91] Jack: them
[303.47] Jack: Transferring over from like, you know, the the independent gyros which board did you first move on to now?
[310.91] Jack: Let me think about this. Did you go multi-wee or cake a or
[316.55] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, I had a KK first, but it was the original one with the little potentiometers on
[322.59] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, and then I went CC 3d. Ah
[326.79] Richard "ycopter": Because another big influence it is just just 70 big influence for me
[332.07] Richard "ycopter": as I say other than David when the style and yeah
[335.03] Richard "ycopter": I mean he did he's done an awful lot for the sort of I suppose showcasing the development of
[340.67] Richard "ycopter": Multi rotors and quads particularly. Yeah, I was really inspired by the kind of stuff that he was doing just because of his flying style
[347.47] Richard "ycopter": Very very fluid very smooth very dynamic. Yeah. Yeah, and that's sort of what I wanted to do as well
[354.83] Richard "ycopter": I've never got as good as him, but I keep trying. I keep trying. Yeah, that's all we can do
[359.79] Jack: I mean, they've got the constant weather for it, you know us us Brit
[362.99] Jack: I bet you can fly better and win than he can and right
[366.43] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, you're probably right. Yeah, I find myself these days
[370.59] Jack: Just all the time just looking at weather forecasts. What boards are you running now at the moment or like setups big quad?
[377.83] Richard "ycopter": I've got open pilot revolution, which I've been using for two and a bit years now
[383.15] Richard "ycopter": I think I use it pretty much the same as the CC 3d
[386.47] Richard "ycopter": Yeah
[386.99] Richard "ycopter": But it's got more ports and you can add GPS to it and all sorts of bits and pieces which I don't do
[392.99] Richard "ycopter": But I see two ports and all that correct. Yeah. Yeah fair enough
[398.19] Richard "ycopter": And then I've on my sort of medium-sized machines use CC 3d
[402.91] Richard "ycopter": Yeah
[403.39] Richard "ycopter": And then on the minis I'm just really going the the nazi route because I think they they seem to they seem to work
[410.05] Jack: Better on the minis. Are you running clean flight on the CC 3d? It might be worth you trying that
[415.25] Richard "ycopter": I did think about giving it a try. But at the time I didn't have a spare PPM
[421.13] Richard "ycopter": Receiver so I couldn't do it. So you still you can still run
[426.45] Jack: CPPM like about that. You don't have to run
[429.97] Richard "ycopter": PPM. Yeah, well, I wanted the yeah, I wanted the the one shot
[436.25] Richard "ycopter": With the clean flight and you can't you can't do it unless you're running PPM
[439.41] Richard "ycopter": Anyway, I'm I'm enjoying the nazi 3032s. I think they're absolutely brilliant and
[445.49] Richard "ycopter": I think the work that dominics done on the clean flight is absolutely amazing. I mean, it's sort of it's developing
[452.21] Jack: It's developing so fast. It's unbelievable time cop. I can hear him now has just scratched your name from his Christmas list
[461.25] Richard "ycopter": I don't think I was on it preview any before anyway, so i'm not too worried about that
[465.73] Richard "ycopter": And the other guy that seems to be doing an awful lot of development and is doing some amazing flying is Boris B
[470.85] Jack: Oh man, I know i'm um, i'm looking forward to when he releases his ESCs
[475.97] Richard "ycopter": Well, he must be the only person i've come across that seems to be able to fly brilliantly tune build brilliantly build
[483.33] Richard "ycopter": Obviously, obviously knows exactly how to build but the amazing thing is he seems to be a bit of a coder as well
[488.93] Richard "ycopter": So he's really getting inside the clean flight and putting on different filters that are making it perform even better
[495.25] Richard "ycopter": So i'm just really excited to see what he's going to come out with. Yeah, because believe it or not
[500.05] Jack: I I went over to the kiss ESCs. They've got the the one shot enabled
[504.93] Jack: um
[505.33] Jack: You soldering a jumper and I um, I kept burning them out just on the same arm
[510.61] Jack: It doesn't matter how many times I put I put a new one on they they kept burning out
[514.85] Jack: So I went over to back to the hobby king
[518.93] Jack: 12 and blue series
[521.97] Jack: And um, I I flashed them with the bl heli 14, which is absolutely amazing. It was good in beta as well
[528.37] Jack: And um, and i've put some of his
[530.85] Jack: Uh settings in the bl heli like to smooth out the flight and it was amazing
[536.37] Jack: So there's more I can post you a link to that if you want later, you know, try and keep up with
[542.69] Jack: you know all the latest releases and that because you find that
[546.77] Jack: Um things just tend to work better with them. Unlike, you know, like I hear so many of the dji guys
[552.93] Jack: Waiting, uh to see if everyone else's
[555.89] Jack: Um crashes and sets on fire, but you know, like, uh, everything seems to be like vigorously tested
[562.21] Jack: In um, the sort of you know, uh scratch building sort of corner, which is really lovely
[568.45] Jack: so yeah, I found
[571.09] Jack: Better with the bl heli 14 because um, I mean I loved simon k. I loved how smooth they were and I could get a really quick take
[577.97] Jack: off
[578.77] Jack: But um, I just love the dampened line, you know, like the active braking
[583.97] Jack: Yeah, where you know, it switches the phase over and they sort of like stop instantly it allows you to sink
[589.41] Jack: Because um i'm finding with these minis, uh, you know that they can just keep floating up and find it really hard to stay low and
[596.69] Jack: You know like sink
[598.37] Jack: You know like flip and I want to sink right right back down. So I don't clip anything
[603.33] Richard "ycopter": Now it definitely gives you an awful lot more control
[605.25] Richard "ycopter": And when you've got a light mini and you've got a powerful setup then the problem is you only need a little bit of throttle
[610.61] Richard "ycopter": And then you know, it's often it's difficult to to control. So and you don't so yeah, it definitely makes it a lot more
[616.69] Richard "ycopter": Accurate flying with the uh with the light down. Yeah, i must say that i've um
[621.25] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, i'm a bit obsessed with these machines and uh, I I just think they're absolutely fascinating
[626.53] Richard "ycopter": And I just I can't understand why everybody didn't want to fly them. I don't know whether you're the same
[630.53] Jack: I you know like being able to fly and you know getting getting addicted and for me it's um
[636.69] Jack: As awful as it sounds like when I fly i'm i'm not me for like six minutes
[642.13] Jack: And that's the sort of like best holiday i've ever had away from myself
[646.45] Jack: You know and we're like ripping around the countryside and i've got like the biggest smile and obviously like, you know
[651.33] Jack: My head's twitching everywhere
[652.93] Jack: But uh equally they it can be very frustrating when
[656.37] Jack: When they just don't work properly, you know, like something breaks and you're out of the sky
[660.93] Jack: And um, i've learned the hard way to like buy five of everything
[665.17] Jack: Yeah, you buy five
[666.37] Jack: Yeah for a quad
[668.05] Richard "ycopter": And then you've got you've got a spare or just in case you get a dud
[671.41] Richard "ycopter": Yeah
[671.81] Richard "ycopter": I think you're making a good point actually because uh
[674.21] Richard "ycopter": Anybody that's expecting to do this and just get into it and not have any problems or any any problems to solve
[680.37] Richard "ycopter": Um, then, you know, you you're going to be severely disappointed
[684.45] Richard "ycopter": I think even actually if you if you were going to go down the route of a ready to fly
[689.81] Richard "ycopter": I think you'd still probably be disappointed because at some point you're going to have a problem and you're going to going to break it
[695.73] Richard "ycopter": And you have to try and repair it and um, I know that when I first started building them, um, I did have
[703.17] Richard "ycopter": failures and
[705.17] Richard "ycopter": and crashes
[706.45] Richard "ycopter": and but after every one
[708.77] Richard "ycopter": I fixed it and I learned something and I don't do that anymore, which caused the problem. So in my builds
[716.45] Richard "ycopter": That they're really if you if you build these things, right?
[719.73] Richard "ycopter": They can be really really reliable
[722.29] Richard "ycopter": And only early days when I was building them there were people saying that quad copters would never be or tricopters would never be
[729.65] Richard "ycopter": Reliable as an aerial vehicle because you just want one asc or one motor to go down and the thing falls out the sky
[737.73] Richard "ycopter": You want at least a hexa or an octocopter that you've got some redundancy
[742.61] Richard "ycopter": Yeah, well, I don't hear that anymore. Uh simply because if you build them, right then they can be incredibly
[749.33] Jack: Incredibly reliable. Yeah, that that's that's it, you know, um, uh favorite. Um thing at the moment product

[759.57] Richard "ycopter": I have been
[761.25] Richard "ycopter": Because the first thing I want to do when I put when I build a multi-rotor is to put a good camera on it
[765.73] Richard "ycopter": Yeah on the other zmr 250 there is no good solution for putting a camera on so everybody like
[772.21] Richard "ycopter": Used a bit of foam and zip ties and I didn't like that at all. So i've designed uh, a very light plywood
[779.73] Richard "ycopter": Um like caddy for a gopro or for a xiaomi. In fact, that's one of my favorite things
[785.17] Richard "ycopter": You know the xiaomi camera. Yeah, i've heard though that it's um got focus issues
[789.89] Richard "ycopter": Well, the one I got is uh is is spot on it's really good
[794.45] Richard "ycopter": I would say it's not the it's not as sharp as a gopro 3 which is the other
[800.93] Richard "ycopter": Camera that i've got gopro 3 black. It's not as sharp
[804.13] Richard "ycopter": But for the value you can probably buy you can probably buy five or six for the same price
[811.09] Richard "ycopter": The quality is nearly nearly as good
[813.09] Richard "ycopter": And if you're going to put it on a on a 250 anyway
[815.73] Richard "ycopter": The point I was trying to make is that that i've designed um
[819.33] Richard "ycopter": Like a plywood caddy that i've i've designed it on cad so it all sort of locks together
[824.93] Richard "ycopter": And then it gives the the camera complete face plate
[829.57] Richard "ycopter": Uh, so it's totally protected
[832.13] Jack: It looks like a riot shield for your camera
[835.41] Richard "ycopter": It's fantastic. And this is a 27 mil uv
[839.49] Richard "ycopter": Lens filter camera filter so it gives it protects the the camera lens. That's one of my favorite things. Um, and
[847.33] Richard "ycopter": You know the little rubber bobbin things that come on the zmr is they're an absolute pain and I wasn't going to use them
[854.77] Richard "ycopter": But then I thought well if I can integrate
[857.09] Richard "ycopter": Um that into this design then it would work. So now i've got
[861.17] Richard "ycopter": A cable tie which stops them flying off altogether with some padding. I like squash them down
[867.57] Jack: And it works there's a company called, uh dti and they've got little um plastic
[874.05] Jack: they look like
[875.73] Jack: Studs, you know, they're flat ones a flat mushroom and the other one's like a little round disc
[880.37] Jack: Yeah, and you put them in between those bobbing things and you push them together
[884.37] Jack: Um if uh, I lost fabiano, how does it stop them? Yeah
[888.77] Jack: Parting a little bit. Yeah
[890.85] Jack: You know the drummers velcro the little weird mushroom things
[894.77] Jack: Little plastic mushrooms and you push them together and they lock and as the caps go in between each other
[900.53] Jack: They can't raise above. Oh, I know what you mean. Yeah
[903.01] Jack: Yeah, um, I think malc from rctv mentioned it
[906.69] Jack: It's like it's very expensive, but you can buy like a little tiny amount for like £2.50 on ebay
[911.89] Jack: And it 3m makes it and uh, that stuff is really sort of like sticky and it does take a bit of the vibration out
[918.93] Jack: So that's what I use is pretty strong. Um, oh, yeah, we haven't shouted out your videos either. So your uh,

[1125.44] Jack: Yeah, pretty much and and there were I bet there's a few right turns in there
[1129.92] Tony: You don't like that. I don't like it. It was a left into a right. Yeah, I didn't really like I don't like flying right

[1138.08] Jack: It's like hanging around with zoolander. You're like i'm not an ambi turner

[1168.66] Jack: And then left becomes right if you know what I mean. Yeah, but if you're a vv, it's always left
[1175.62] Tony: Or minus 90 if you're using clean flight. I just I don't know. I just don't like going left very well

[1183.62] Tony: Luckily, the gnats was all left. There's a couple of rights, but most of it was left
