[105.6] Jack: and he said he hated every minute of it because he was like new to building.

[110.64] Jack: Yeah, of the build itself. He loves the quad.
[114.56] Jack: And his name was Ed, and he came and visited me. And I phoned him up in our chat, and we were
[120.48] Jack: talking about old, embarrassing beginner stories. So he was saying, look, guys,
[126.48] Jack: you need a beginner series. You knew people were just starting out. So after the show,
[132.24] Jack: we're going to have a chat and be like, right, how can we have a beginner series? Where do you
[136.24] Jack: begin? What's your personal suggestions on how do you start? Me, myself, I always recommend buying
[143.04] Jack: a Hubson because you can't kill anyone. Yeah, and it's the number one first.

[205.36] Jack: bought a Hubson first and then I built my first quad out of wood.

[284.67] Jack: And then my next task was to build, help build a dry copter for Nico,
[290.11] Jack: who's our resident co-host and beginner.
[294.99] Jack: So he's pretty good at, like, the physical frame and stuff.
[299.07] Jack: Like, you know, he drilled and cut all the booms and drilled holes through them.
[303.47] Jack: I got some stuff laser cut.
[305.07] Jack: And we come to the electronics.
[306.67] Jack: And he went for the Afro Slim ESCs and their Opto.
[311.39] Jack: Didn't know what that was to begin with.
[313.79] Jack: So Opto ESCs, no back.
[316.91] Jae: Yeah, they don't provide power to the board, do they?
[319.71] Jack: No.
[320.35] Jack: And back when I first started, I remember using old technology.
[324.91] Jack: And I mean, like, really big ESCs.
[328.67] Jack: You know, like, big.
[329.63] Jack: I still got some, quite few.
[331.39] Jack: I know. We were flashing some the other week.
[333.47] Jack: So, sorry, I was trying to look for the time cop, not time cop thing in the chat.

[341.55] Jack: I was going to, that was going to be my little chin dig.

[364.19] Jack: And I was like, no, there's no, there's no voltage going to it.
[367.39] Jack: So I plugged in my ESCs and it worked.
[370.91] Jack: Because obviously it had a back.
[372.03] Jack: And written on my old school crazy ass ESCs was the term Yubeck.
[379.55] Jack: Universal battery eliminating circuit.
[382.51] Jack: Yeah.

[384.35] Jack: So, but when you Google Yubeck, it doesn't come up with anything.

[413.23] Jack: So yeah, if you type that into like, you know, like say hobby king.
[419.23] Jack: Like Yubeck, nothing comes out.

[422.75] Jack: So the logical thing was I was like, look dude, this is going to totally fry your board.
[427.55] Jack: But I can do it anyway.
[428.75] Jack: I can apply 12 volts to a 5 volt input and it blow.
[434.51] Jack: So I had to buy him a whole new board.
[437.63] Jack: So yeah.
[438.43] Jack: And little things like that.
[439.71] Jack: Like they don't tell you.
[441.55] Jack: There we go.

[442.83] Jae: I had one that was reversing the polarity on a Bluetooth receiver.
[446.03] Jae: And a similar thing.
[446.75] Jae: That doesn't say it on the board or anything.
[448.51] Jack: But that one's an L back, which is linear battery elimination board.
[454.59] Jack: Yeah.
[455.07] Jae: Polarity and voltage is an important factor in this.
[458.11] Jae: Any, any other, any other, any other cock tops on your end?
[463.71] Jae: One of my worst ones was I was flying my first ever quadcopter and I'd fly it everywhere.
[470.03] Jae: I'd take it down to dusty places.
[471.71] Jae: I'd take it over fields and things like that.
[473.23] Jae: And it was getting a bit covered in dust and I can only clean the motors in the arms and stuff.
[478.59] Jae: But they basically then I took it out flying one night.
[482.91] Jae: Sorry, one day, but it was a bit cloudy, a little bit wet in the sky.
[486.99] Jae: And basically the gyros, I think, shorted out from the dust and the moisture content.
[492.91] Jae: And it fell to the ground.
[494.99] Jae: Just hit the ground, taking out a snail in the process.
[499.07] Jae: And it was recorded on my phone because I'd strapped my phone to it and put it up in the sky.
[504.67] Jae: But I think I, well, with all the mistakes that we make, as long as we learn from them,
[510.27] Jae: I think that's the key.
[511.07] Jae: And I learned that maybe dust and moisture don't always mix around electronics
[516.03] Jae: and quite sensitive devices.
[517.87] Tony: I think moisture, yeah.
[519.31] Jae: Well, exactly.
[520.03] Jae: But usually moisture, I think collected on the dust or at least cause problems that way.
[525.63] Tony: Yeah, I know someone who flew a Phantom in the Lake District and he flew it,
[532.43] Tony: well, because he was quite high up a mountain anyway.
[534.43] Tony: You mean you?
[535.55] Tony: No, not me.
[537.47] Tony: He was quite high up and like it wasn't a rain.
[542.75] Tony: Well, it was a cloud coming and I think got wet.
[546.43] Tony: And he and he flew like two hours later over a lake.

[553.15] Tony: And it went straight in and I think that was moisture.

[556.67] Jae: I mean, it doesn't always have to rain to have the moisture in the air around the electronics.
[561.23] Jae: I mean, it wasn't raining on this day.
[563.39] Jae: Incidentally, on other days, I used to wrap my flight board in plastic film,
[567.23] Jae: cling film and go flying in the rain.
[569.55] Jae: Not heavy rain, but yeah, they're fine in the rain, but not with the circuit boards,
[575.07] Jae: flight controllers.

[602.43] Jae: They're all mistakes that I have to go back and build, but they do make us better.

[650.67] Tony: So we went for a fun fly and I put a 4S on.

[658.19] Tony: And I've done a really quite fast boost into the air.
[663.87] Tony: About 100 foot up, foot four, five, maybe 10 seconds, probably knowing me.
[668.99] Tony: Power boost straight up.

[671.71] Tony: I couldn't see anything.
[672.83] Tony: Just went, didn't it?
[673.71] Tony: And I was like, where is it?
[675.15] Tony: Took my goggles off, panicking.
[677.23] Tony: Just saw my quad go.

[679.87] Tony: It blew my VTX because I didn't have a...
[683.55] Jae: Yeah, could be 14.8 volts to you.

[708.43] Jack: So the difference is that you can lower your power.
[714.11] Jack: And you can restrict it so that that basically lowers it
[718.99] Jack: from the 12 volts down to 10 volts.

[721.23] Jack: And that kind of stops massive voltage spikes coming.
[725.87] Jack: And, you know, as you draw a load of power.
[728.83] Jack: As I booted it.
[729.39] Jack: Yeah, booted it.
[730.67] Jack: So you regulate your voltage for your video transmitter
[733.55] Jack: to protect it.
[734.51] Jack: And then you might notice that the ESCs create,
[738.67] Jack: from constantly changing, they create ripples in the power.
[742.03] Jack: So it's like stop, start, stop, start, stop, start.
[744.03] Tony: And that's what you can see through your goggles, isn't it?
[746.51] Tony: Yeah, little white lines.
[748.11] Jack: As you punch, it sort of, your video gets a bit all shaky
[751.07] Jack: and loads of little lines travel up there.
[753.39] Jack: And that, you can put a filter on it to stop that from happening.
[756.91] Jack: Or a simpler method is have an separate battery,
[761.07] Jack: which is an ideal situation.
[762.91] Jack: But with all our mini-cods, we're worried about weight.

[768.27] Jae: And it just does make a difference.
[770.19] Jae: If I put the GoPro on mine, it struck stop light.
