[47.57] Tony: Yeah, unfortunately I won't be talking too much so you guys are going to... Why the hell couldn't you have this when we were all, when you're not away? Why couldn't you have this when you're all with you?
[61.09] Jack: I don't know, I think it's... Because then we'd all catch it. Yeah. No, I didn't mean that, I meant because it would be so nice of him just shutting his mouth for five minutes. You know, if any of you have seen me on Facebook, you know, they're, they're little reasons why I've got this throat infection. Because you live in Brighton.
[90.45] Adam: Yeah, apparently. No, I've read about that but I'm not sure we want to talk about that in front of all the boys and girls at Christmas. No, they weren't Happy New Year. Oh yeah, sorry, yes. Times do move on, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve. It's a big, big year for Thursdays, isn't it? Yeah, so we've got two new people in, Ed, what have you been up to? I went out flying today with Carlos and Johnny. Are those two troublemakers? Yeah, yeah, troublemakers they are. Didn't do my first tree run there, I was right, really happy.
[120.45] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: Yeah, good day and got out there just before the weather went. It's all good. Brothers, didn't it? Yeah, I've been out for the flights most flights last few days. Last time I was out, went down the Hidden Valley, sort of banked it a bit too hard, smashed into a metal gate, this flight of fossil. Last time I was out, I mean, a dog pit. Basically, it's right. Well, he's gone flight control and that could X for our knackereds.
[151.17] Jack: But it's back up and running now, so all good. X4R, they're expensive. I hope you washed your hands.
[159.81] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: Yes, and the most annoying thing, I didn't get any footage.
[164.13] Adam: Oh man. Yeah, I know. Didn't happen. You just want that moment of splashdown or squelched down.
[171.25] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: Was it, was it moist? Guys move on, move on. Obviously people, because of the fossil, it's quite low profile. It was basically, it was the antenna sticking out.

[201.41] Adam: I was going to talk about, I don't know if you remember, but just before Christmas, the FAA in
[206.61] Adam: the US was saying that there would be a million drones in the skies after Christmas and that all
[211.57] Adam: Americans should be on alert for, you know, the serious risks and dangers that they've posed.
[216.37] Adam: And that they're now trumpeting their massive success of their registration scheme by telling
[221.09] Adam: us that 45,000 people have registered. So is it massively unsuccessful or were they hugely
[226.85] Adam: exaggerating about the million drones, do you think? So what's the penalty if they don't register?
[231.57] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: I mean, obviously, I suppose there isn't one until something actually happens.
[235.97] Adam: Penalties in the US generally depend on your skin colour. Controversial. No comment.
[246.77] Edd: No, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure. This was covered on a flight test podcast a couple of weeks
[253.33] Edd: ago, and their conclusion was it's just no matter what the fine is. And there are some
[261.41] Edd: big fines that sort of roll up into the thousands, but it's just not policeable. Who is going to
[268.37] Edd: report who? How do you even know who it belongs to? It's not as if we all put our name and address
[273.57] Edd: on a drone. And then they sort of quite rightly worried about, you know, if you're known by your
[280.21] Edd: neighbours to be into the hobby. And then John Smith from across the road flies, flies his
[285.73] Edd: brand new Christmas drone and it hits into your neighbour's nice shiny new car. You know, you're
[290.45] Edd: the one that's going to, the assumption is going to be you that it belongs to you. And they're
[294.45] Edd: worried that in the US that they'll have, you know, that assumption will then, you know, be part of
[299.57] Edd: part of all this big stitch up there and their feeling at the moment. It's all just, it hasn't
[304.45] Adam: been well thought that thought out at all. I did notice there were some guidelines for police
[309.25] Adam: officers floating around that talked about evidence being crucial. And I'm sure that's going
[314.69] Adam: to be the same in the US to actually get a decent conviction. Is any conviction decent?
[321.49] Adam: Well, a successful conviction. I mean, that people are going to fight it.
[327.65] Adam: Yeah, absolutely. I think it's the numbers though that interest me. Yeah. Yeah. The
[333.49] Adam: sheer disparity between the million drones, which is, you know, one drone for every 300 Americans
[338.93] Adam: seems very unlikely. And then under, you know, the few thousand who actually have registered,
[346.61] Adam: I'm sure that's much closer to the real number. Storming a teacup. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah.

[503.33] Jack: will, and that those who buy them for gifts or others could be liable for privacy and personal
[509.09] Edd: injury claims. Well, how can we ensure something that we know is going to get damaged anyway? No
[515.09] Edd: one's going to touch it with a large pole. No, no, no. They're excluding it from your home
[520.37] Jack: insurance or personal insurance. Yeah, I don't see how they're insurable, to be honest. What,
[526.05] Jack: you and your home, of course your home's insurable. No, no, no, no. What, are you saying
[529.65] Edd: that my home isn't going to be insured if I own a drone? Are you sure you've read that right?
[535.25] Jack: No, right. You've got home insurance, right? Yeah. And say someone doesn't put the handbrake on their
[541.73] Jack: car, or their car rolls into the side of your house and cause structural damage, right? That
[549.25] Jack: is included because it's not lightly or a common thing that's included in your insurance.
[555.41] Jack: They'll pay for a bear to your house, but if some
[558.85] Jack: crashes are draining through your window, you can't claim it through your house insurance.
[563.33] Jack: So they're sneakily writing that in very quickly. Is it going to make any odds though? Because we're

[732.21] Edd: if you like, to do with latency on the controller. In fact, you mentioned that expensive receiver
[736.77] Edd: earlier. So I was looking at bringing down the latency between stick and action. And I've got
[746.85] Edd: everything. Is it CPPM? Is that right? Just one cable. And apparently there's this faster protocol.
[752.29] Edd: And all the experienced guys now are going, who let the noob on the radio? But there's a lot,
[756.85] Edd: there's probably hopefully there's some people out there that are going, what was this about? And
[761.25] Edd: I've only just switched on to it myself. And I don't know much about it. And the whole, the
[766.13] Edd: internet just seems to be a world of many, many different opinions. I was wondering if you guys
[770.85] Tony: are flying anything else other than CPPM. I'm rocking an S bus. Right. I rock both of them. And
[779.25] Jack: really, there isn't that much difference. There's something like 23 milliseconds, something like
[785.65] Jack: that. Exactly. Totally, really tiny. There's something your ears can pick up on. So I'm just
[792.37] Edd: wondering whether, whether other senses like sight and, you know, eye coordination would be
[799.41] Jack: able to pick up on that as well. Yeah. I mean, it all, it all counts, you know, like loop time.
[808.05] Jack: So yeah, so if you lower your loop time, that helps. If you free up more processing power,
[816.77] Jack: so it can go amend the controlling, but run everything live, you're running LEDs and stuff.
[826.45] Jack: And, you know, little things like serial ports, not serial, soft serial. So like the thing is with
[837.41] Jack: S bus is that you've got on, on the nays, you've got two IC2 ports or IC squared as Dan Upton would
[847.25] Jack: say. God bless Dan Upton. God bless that man. God bless Dan Upton. Now, the thing is with
[855.41] Jack: beautiful nays board is that your first, your first UART port is shared with your USB connector.
[866.61] Jack: Okay. So, and we tend to use that one for the OSD on your, so like, if you're running a
[874.93] Jack: micro minimum OSD, you've always got to make sure you unplug it before you plug it in. Because if
[880.53] Jack: you try and connect and it's using that port for your OSD, you mess it up and it will, it will pass
[889.57] Jack: the video through, but it won't display your OSD. So you have to reset it all. That makes you want
[893.81] Jack: to rip your **** off. And the other, I'm allowed to say ****. Right. So then you've got the second
[900.69] Jack: port, which ideally was meant to be used with telemetry. Now, if you move over, if you use S bus,
[906.53] Jack: you have to use your UART port to set that to a serial RX so that you're putting a digital signal
[913.65] Jack: in from your S bus. So then if you want telemetry to be like, Hey, you know, like I need to know my
[919.89] Jack: battery voltage or V-bat, then you've got to open soft serial ports and that kind of, that wrecks your
[927.57] Jack: loop time. And you've got to be careful that like, if you're using an open logger, it's got to be fast
[933.25] Jack: enough board rate to save the data that your flight controller is running. You know, like your stick
[939.97] Tony: settings and everything. Is this why everyone wants to start using EF3 board now? Yeah. Because that has
[947.49] Jack: two, I think two extra ports, UART ports, I think two, one extra. How many brothers? I should know.
[955.49] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: Three and then also six, eight promoter outputs or pins or whatever you want to call them. Yeah,
[961.89] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: not that everyone. But talking about that as well, the F1 boards of some quite into Boris at the
[967.41] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: moment, obviously, air modes now come out into final, but they're looking at pushing the F1 board
[974.29] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: to obviously its full potential. Is that two gigahertz? Obviously, you're talking about,
[979.33] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: obviously you need to disable a lot of things to make sure that the process is still there.
[983.09] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: Yeah, even your accelerometer. What's going to need done with an F1. Yeah, with an F1 target
[987.81] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: accelerometer and magometer has all got to be disabled. And obviously, you still got to be
[993.89] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: careful with what else you're using, which is quite cool, to be honest. But yeah, to be honest,
[998.45] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: it's looking at forwards. I reckon we've got to start using F3s. Yeah, or F4s. I'm using the

[1014.53] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: designed by a software developer rather than a hardware developer. Well, you're off, you're off
[1020.69] Jack: Clifton's Christmas list. Yeah. And also with that board, it's been manufactured very poorly
[1029.89] Jack: by like the worst manufacturer in China. Little things like the USB connector has been falling
[1038.85] Tony: off and stuff like that. What board are you talking about? Seriously Pro. Quite a lot of
[1046.93] Jack: people moaning about that, aren't they? Yeah. The cool thing is Whisper says it will never catch on.
[1052.05] Jack: Yeah, you've got the Dodo board, which is an F3, but it doesn't have an extra U-up or,
[1058.29] Jack: I don't think, I think it's only got two. A lemonade board's looking quite cool. Yeah. And then
[1063.41] Jack: I've heard the tornado board's really good, but you can't get hold of them and they're very expensive.
[1068.45] Tony: If it makes you fly better, it's worth buying it, isn't it? Yeah. I mean, stuff's moving on.
[1074.61] Tony: In this game, it moves on every two weeks. It's crazy. It changes all the time. I can't keep up
[1080.85] Jack: with it. It does my head in. I used to keep up with it really well. And then, you know, like,
[1087.09] Jack: I'm in Radio C two days a week. That's not giving you an advantage,
[1090.77] Adam: hasn't it? Hey, Adam's back. He is back. I've been politely listening for a bit because I
[1094.61] Jack: didn't know quite where I joined. Yeah. Because I'm in there and I'm trying like,
[1100.69] Jack: I'm now looking up other people's problems, like, you know, that come in during, you know,
[1107.09] Jack: my days there and stuff. And, you know, I'm looking to try and solve them rather than looking at all
[1112.85] Jack: the new technology. Because like, Triflite has got like the new quadcopter software that kind of is
[1120.21] Jack: based on the Boris B has got like a tail auto tail tune. I had no idea. I bet you wet your knickers.
[1128.77] Jack: I had a raging. Sorry, guys. The laptop no longer balanced on my lap. I was so excited.
[1138.93] Adam: It's internet radio. You can say what you want. There's no government. Yeah.
[1143.33] Edd: Admittedly, you might end up on a register. Yeah. Yeah. All this stuff that's moving on
[1147.89] Edd: at a million miles an hour. I've only just started to find my feet, so to speak, with
[1154.45] Edd: the nays five, little bees, Boris, and it just feels great. It feels really fine. And
[1161.25] Edd: it's so difficult not to lay yourself to get consumed by hype about the next product that
[1167.81] Edd: comes along. Because really, I can only imagine that they're very marginal performance increases,
[1173.41] Edd: especially for those of us that fly Acro as well. Because it's, you know, I can't imagine the jump
[1179.33] Edd: is so big that it's going to revolutionize your flying. And if it is, then I would question
[1185.41] Edd: whether that's the processor doing that, whether it's actually you as a pilot doing that. It just
[1191.97] Adam: seems a bit weird. There are always people who can, you know, they read something might be a bit
[1197.33] Adam: better. They want to go and buy it. And they don't necessarily know for sure it is until they've got
[1201.89] Adam: it. And then you've got to remember there's something called confirmation bias, which means
[1205.81] Adam: when you've bought something, you're gonna think it's better. You're gonna tell people it's better,
[1209.97] Adam: whether it is or it isn't. Yeah, because you want to, you want to be right. Yeah. Can I, can I just
[1217.65] Tony: ask something? So if the nays 32, I can't tell the difference between S bus and PPM, CC PPM,
[1227.17] Tony: on the nays 32, will I be able to tell the difference if I use an F3 board? Do you think
[1233.89] Tony: having an F3 board will make me be able to tell the difference between S bus and C PPM? Because at
[1241.41] Tony: the moment I fly two different quads and I cannot see the hype about S bus. But it will make you more
[1250.21] Adam: attractive to women. That's the basis of all good advertising. Okay, right. We know, we definitely
[1256.93] Jack: know S bus is better, right? So for a start, on what point they on stats or on physical flying?
[1264.61] Jack: Well, on, I'm gonna go for stats for the moment. Right, so every, every little improvement helps,
[1270.69] Jack: right? So you've got lower loop times, you've got your ESCs, you know, the new, the new speeds that
[1277.81] Jack: it can handle via the BL Heli software all helps all these little improvements bit by bit, shaving
[1284.77] Jack: weight, better batteries, more C, so more current being delivered, all, it all adds up. You know,
[1292.29] Jack: we're getting into the sort of formula one kind of thing where, you know, we're using carbon fiber,
[1297.49] Jack: we're drilling more holes, making stuff lighter, squeezing more and more performance out and it
[1303.33] Jack: all, all adds up. Now, with your, with your board, the biggest thing that I noticed from PPM to S bus
[1311.65] Jack: was that on PPM, your numbers on, on the receiver inputs would twitch and flicker, you know,
[1323.97] Jack: they wouldn't sit at 1500. Now, your board has got something called a dead band in it. And what
[1333.33] Jack: you meant to do is look how much those numbers flick, flicker up and down and you'd count them
[1338.61] Jack: in each direction, add them together, and then maybe set dead band underscore equal, no, not
[1345.81] Jack: underscore equal 10, for instance, you know, because it would flicker five each way, just to be on the
[1353.89] Jack: safe side. Now, that, that flickering, unless you set your dead band, that's taking up processing
[1362.37] Jack: power. Cool? You know, because your board's being like, oh, you want to go left a bit? Or you want
[1368.21] Jack: to go right a bit, you know, so forth. Now, S bus eliminates that sits quite nicely locked in,
[1375.97] Jack: it might flicker one or two, depending on which protocol you use. Now you've got that,
[1380.37] Jack: and it's a faster digital protocol, that's all adding up and your boards no longer looking for
[1387.01] Jack: micro, yeah, like micro changes. And the other, the other side of it is because no, you no longer
[1394.77] Jack: have that dead band where you're having to move that, that stick out of that dead band. So you're
[1399.65] Jack: having to move it 10 plus whatever, and then it starts doing your inputs, you can set your dead
[1406.21] Jack: band much tighter so that when you do move the stick, and my new amount, it starts registering
[1412.45] Jack: instantly. Yeah, so it all, it all adds up little by little, you may not notice it, yeah, but it all
[1419.41] Jack: adds up, you know, and then like, because Boris made loads of little changes in the software and
[1425.81] Jack: dropped that, that down, you noticed that because it was one big changeover, you know, you went back
[1431.81] Jack: to the gravity to 18, you were like, I don't know how I used to fly this. But equally, right,
[1439.25] Jack: if it's working for you, and you haven't got much money, and you're enjoying it, there's no point
[1444.21] Jack: in making all these changes, and then you having to get used to a quad, I would kind of like buy up
[1449.89] Jack: some spare parts, if you start breaking stuff, switch stuff out, you know, and always kind of
[1455.65] Jack: upgrade yourself and treat yourself, you know, because the quad is gonna have to be taken apart

[1485.97] Tony: because I was just using clean flights to set my... What I've noticed with doing it through clean
[1491.17] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: flight, obviously, motor tab, obviously, push all four motors to the top, obviously enable it,
[1497.41] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: put the battery in, let it do its BP, and put it to the bottom, let it do its BP, and it's done.
[1502.45] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: But with BL Heli, obviously, if you connect to the ESCs on BL Heli,
[1508.45] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: press check, obviously make sure it's under on clean flight, and yeah, basically, if you do
[1516.85] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: calibration in clean flight, and then go to BL Heli, do a check, and at the bottom, it will give you
[1522.61] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: one to four, obviously ESCs one to four. If you're on Boris, only if you're on Boris. Yeah, well,
[1529.41] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: you should be on Boris anyway. Basically, it will give you a colour coded one to four at the bottom.
[1539.89] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: If any of those colours are grey, it means that they're out of sync with the master,
[1544.53] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: which is number one, calibrate, and then check it, they will be out of sync. Two of them will be
[1549.97] Simon "Bradderz" Bradley: out of sync by around 0.4 to 0.6. Now Tony had these quads, and we checked it, and it was, again,

[1685.01] Jack: settings from it doing that, is you've got a little tick box at the top, programmable by TX.
[1692.29] Jack: If you untick that box, and save it, you'll no longer be able to calibrate your ESCs via the
[1700.21] Jack: clean flight sliders, and you can just manually input the number yourself, and save it, so that
[1707.89] Jack: you know that you've got all the same values. I hope that makes sense in BR Heli Suite.
