====================================

This week we get to chat to the female 3d mini quad pilot, Zoe Full throttle.

[0.0] Jack: Noemotry is recovered.
[3.2] Jack: Hello and welcome back to Let's Drone Out.
[7.2] Jack: Yeah, it's just me. Unfortunately, no one's here. No one wants to talk to me.
[12.96] Jack: Everyone hates me and you're just stuck with me. So let me just do some housekeeping.
[18.48] (Editor): Don't forget, this podcast is sponsored by Radio C.
[21.36] (Editor): Number one for all your drone related needs.
[23.6] (Editor): Pay them a visit at radioc.co.uk and use the promo code LEO for 5% off your order and free
[29.52] Jack: shipping on orders over £80. How's it going guys? You're safe to come out now. We are joined by...
[40.96] Jack: Hello. A girl. That's right people. I know.
[46.64] Jack: Yeah, that's it. She's trying to work out the flyer quad the right way up,
[51.68] Jack: but we'll get on that later.
[54.4] Zoe: Screw you all. Because I was inverted.
[57.2] Jack: See, also, you know, if that quad was in Australia, it would be flying the right way up,
[63.52] Jack: even though it is upside down, but it would be the right way up if it was Australia.
[67.04] Jack: Jay, where... yep, from where the plug hole water goes the other way.
[73.52] Jae: Yeah, the Southern Cross mate. Yeah, g'day.
[76.72] Jae: Yep. Hello everyone.
[77.84] Zoe: I always thought the props spun the other way in Australia, isn't it?
[81.92] Jae: Yeah, kind of clockwise, you know, the clockwise ones back to front.
[88.32] Jack: We're joined by Moanstar1. His props do spin the other way if you look on his event horizon.
[95.92] Jack: They do.
[96.96] Jack: Yay. Custom motor mix. Thank you, Dan Upton. And for all your health and drug advice, we have...
[105.52] Jack: Talk to Frank.
[106.56] Jack: Frank, he is our new producer. He tells us what to do and hopefully will be less poo-poo at the show.
[114.64] Jack: So, yep, he suggests ideas and he will help manage us move over to our own show where we'll
[123.2] Jack: have our own chat and website. And yep, just so you know, so Let's Drone Out can be on 24 hours
[131.44] Jack: a day, seven days a week.
[133.52] Jae: Hey, Jack, Jack, we can play the ESC list over and over again.
[136.72] Jack: Yeah. Oh, never ending. Yeah, when we're not on and no one else is on ESCs.
[143.04] Jae: This is your list of them all.
[145.12] Jae: Yeah.
[145.52] Jack: I'm trying to connect his Adam Juniper so he might appear. So welcome, Zoe. How are you doing?
[152.48] Zoe: Pretty good. It's actually a beautiful day out. I've been working on my rigs today,
[157.76] Zoe: doing some repair work and, you know, just kind of excited to be here, excited to chat with y'all
[163.04] Zoe: and share some of my knowledge.
[166.16] Jack: Yeah. What's all this 3D business about then?
[170.16] Zoe: It's Magic and Miracles and a bunch of mystery.
[175.28] Jack: Witchcraft because you're a girl.
[176.96] Zoe: Witchcraft. No, like seriously, the first time I brought it out to a competition,
[181.28] Zoe: somebody shouted, black magic, black magic.
[186.56] Zoe: But OK, so 3D. So a lot of people, I assume in the audience, know what 3D helis are,
[193.92] Zoe: where you have collective pitch helicopters that can fly inverted and you have neutral throttle,
[200.48] Zoe: positive and negative. Right.
[202.24] Jack: And something called a governor here in the England. It's like, you know, it's a word that
[207.12] Jack: you say to your mates like, you know, Tony, you're right, governor. But apparently that's something
[212.4] Zoe: different to you all the time. I feel like I'm being pranked.
[220.72] Jack: No, don't worry. We will start going on about copy rhyming.
[224.0] Frank: Who doesn't know about 3D helis? Flight tester just put up a video about collective pitch
[229.6] Frank: helis. So that might be of interest to anyone who doesn't know.
[234.0] Zoe: Yeah. And they also had a video of Steel flying a grand-per 300 Q alpha quadcopter that is in 3D,
[245.52] Zoe: which was really interesting to watch because Steel, for a lot of people that don't know,
[250.24] Zoe: has a 3D helicopter background. And that's what he did before he flew mini quads.
[256.08] Zoe: And I did. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's why that's, I've been fascinated with 3D helis
[263.44] Zoe: because like every time you watch a 3D heli fly, at least like at the competition level,
[269.2] Zoe: they're doing stunts and tricks that just blow your mind. Right.
[275.2] Zoe: And I thought, why the heck do our quadcopter is not have that ability? Why,
[279.68] Zoe: why are we limited to only flying right side up? So I went down the rabbit hole of researching
[286.96] Zoe: what it would take to do a 3D quadcopter where you have the ability to fly upside down.
[294.48] Zoe: The main difference between a heli and a 3D quad is that you have on a 3D heli collective pitch,
[300.96] Zoe: which the pitch changes through a linkage system to dynamically change the pitch and the airflow
[308.8] Zoe: over the blade. Right. On a fixed pitch quad, you have to stop the motor completely and spin it
[319.52] Zoe: the other direction. Yeah. And use funny propellers as well. No, actually that's the common myth. You
[326.56] Zoe: can get away without the funny propellers. Really? But the lift is not as good. Is that because you
[331.28] Zoe: rotate them the other way around then? It's just, I've noticed that like you can do it as long as
[338.8] Zoe: it's a bullnose propeller and it's like a four by five. You have probably 25 to 30 percent less
[346.4] Zoe: thrust and it's not as efficient, but for doing 90 percent of it, you can get away without a 3D
[354.64] Zoe: propeller. So the machines are like identical. If anyone knows about the 3D planes versus other
[365.84] Frank: sort of planes that you can do acrobatics with, you get symmetrical airfoil 3D planes that can
[371.92] Frank: fly equally well both ways up. But just because, you know, something is asymmetrical, so it's
[378.24] Frank: efficient for flying level, it still works for any other way up. So all your flying wings
[383.44] Frank: that some people have and I may have affected Jack with. Yeah. And Dan Upton.
[391.68] Frank: And Dan Upton. They can fly upside down even though they're less efficient. It just means
[397.36] Frank: that, yeah, you just have to be a bit more heavy on the throttle. So what do you mean affected Jack?
[403.76] Jack: Um, well, you think you're in the head with it? Uh, that's for everyone who don't know, that's, um,
[410.0] Adam: yeah, it's me Adam finally here. Adam Juniper, uh, uh, the king at the back. Yeah. So I was here
[416.48] Adam: the whole time and my copy of Skype was just pretending I wasn't. I know it was horrible.
[420.96] Jack: Well, I didn't know. I had no idea. I was trying to add you, but yeah. Oh well, sort your Skype out,
[427.04] Jack: maybe update yet. But, um, yeah, uh, good old Frank here, you know, little drug pusher he is,
[434.08] Jack: was like, oh, look, look, phone board, mmm, flight test, mmm, mini arrow. Would you like,
[440.32] Jack: do you want some of this? Mmm, mmm, £26. He showed a new technology to you, you couldn't resist.
[446.16] Jack: Oh, no, I know. Now I've got to buy servos. Oh, you're going over to the dark side.
[455.04] Zoe: I fly planes. I've got a capparina. So, and I've got a, if anything, it's a rebalance because
[462.16] Jae: everyone moved from planes to, to quads and monster rotor. And then now it's nice that it's
[466.56] Jae: gone back a little bit the other way because planes are a bit more fun to just put around
[470.48] Jae: in the sky or fly aggressively and fast. So, I think I need a trainer first rather than just
[476.08] Jack: going full on for a wing. I don't know. What, what are my chances of success here? You know,
[480.72] Jack: if I've never flown a plane, because like, I think planes are way easier to fly. What about a wing?
[488.16] Frank: They have a better glide slope than the multirotors. Well, yeah, I mean, a brick would have a better
[493.44] Jack: glide slope than a multirotor because essentially a multirotor is just a brick with like spinning
[498.8] Adam: knives. Yeah. You know, that's my... That still glides straight down. That is a good analogy.
[505.84] Adam: Yeah. Always remind me a bit of the Douglas Adams line. It hung in the air in exactly the
[511.28] Frank: same way a brick doesn't. Well, the other Douglas Adams line, it throws itself at the ground and
[518.48] Jack: misses. That's always missed, doesn't it Jack? No, no. Yeah, we all get, we'll get to that later,
[527.68] Jack: but I've got a few questions for you though. Okay. One, one's actually a comment. Thank you
[534.56] Jack: for the great inspiration. This is from Dan Upton. You messaged him about his 3D flying
[540.48] Jack: quad the other day. He flew through a gate upside down. Apparently you did it better on Instagram.
[545.68] Zoe: Yeah. It's a lot of the tricks I've been doing lately. I've just been posting like short clips
[555.36] Zoe: to my Instagram account. Zoe FPV for anyone that's interested. Yeah. I love seeing people going out
[564.24] Zoe: and trying 3D because when I posted a video about six, seven months ago, I couldn't find anybody else
[572.96] Zoe: doing FPV and 3D besides I think Alan Saboe with his Stingray 500. Someone please put that in the
[582.48] Zoe: comment. Which by the way, if you know 3D Halley's, you know him and you know the Stingray probably.
[594.32] Zoe: It's funny because the Stingray is collective pitch. A lot of people were commenting in chat.
[599.52] Zoe: It's a collective pitch multirotor. Each of the blades change direction in the pitch mid-flight
[606.96] Zoe: without having to spin down the motor. The thing with that machine though is that it's kind of
[614.64] Zoe: dated. I like the way mini quads fly and I wanted a mini quad that had 3D. To my knowledge,
[628.24] Zoe: I'm one of the first few people that really started experimenting with it and now I answer
[632.72] Zoe: like three questions a day from different people on how to set up 3D. It's kind of gotten overwhelming
[642.4] Zoe: which is nice because I like people trying it out. I just now realize I have to make like a
[647.28] Zoe: how-to video because it's gotten to that point. Yeah. That's good man. You know you're spreading
[656.85] Jack: the love. You know you're the mother of 3D mini quads you know. People would love a how-to video
[663.01] Jae: I think and you know as was evident when we had Painless on 360 on the other week a couple of
[669.01] Jae: weeks ago. People loved the how-to videos and if it's sharing something new that you've done the
[674.05] Jae: research and you have the skills to do people love being able to copy it and to take it forward even
[679.65] Zoe: further. Most definitely and for my videos lately I've started doing build videos and
[690.45] Zoe: my build videos are actually like my most watched videos and I spend a lot of time on the production
[699.25] Zoe: end of my videos because I realize that people like that content and that content stands up to
[706.05] Zoe: the test of time. Well till the technology out dates. Well a little bit but like ESCs are still
[713.65] Zoe: ESCs motors are still motors. Good soldering technique is still a good soldering technique
[720.13] Zoe: you know. There's some information that can carry over especially with build videos.
[726.93] Jack: Yeah it's pretty generic it covers all bases really you know it's a good foundation to work on.
[733.33] Zoe: But like with the 3D for example like with the KISS ESCs and flight controller it's really easy
[738.45] Zoe: to set up but completely different than with the BL Heli ESCs and Betaflight. Are you using Betaflight?
[748.53] Zoe: I use Betaflight. I hounded Boris to work on the 3D features so he could have better 3D support
[755.41] Zoe: and Betaflight. Thankfully he added 3D air mode which was really cool of him to do
[764.69] Jack: that held a lot with the performance. Because Dan was out the other day and that's one thing he
[772.05] Jack: did ask me to ask you. He's getting some serious decent issues but he thinks it might be
[780.29] Jack: um he's I think he's using the Skylight ESCs. He was originally using like little bees and he
[786.61] Jack: switched over because like they've each got their own like caps and that but yeah it kind of he goes
[791.57] Jack: to transition from normal flight to 3D and now and again it will just freak out and just yeah.
[798.29] Zoe: So yeah that's an issue I've had with a lot of the smaller ESCs um I've tested a lot like
[806.69] Zoe: I have a pile of ESCs that I've gone through trying to figure out like which ones work best
[812.29] Zoe: and um the little bees work okay like if you see what the little bees to set up you have to go into
[819.09] Zoe: the BL Heli suite and um you change the midpoint to 1500 you change the low to 1000 and the high to
[828.05] Zoe: 2000. Yeah. And then you go and change it to bi-directional mode. Yeah of course. And that's
[834.85] Zoe: that's basically the crux of it. If you know how to update BL Heli suite with your ESCs and flash
[840.45] Zoe: firmware you can 3D basically any BL Heli ESC. Awesome. The issue is though is that with the ESCs
[852.29] Zoe: is that to 3D that transition tends to use over three times the amount of amperage
[860.61] Zoe: that you get from just going from zero to full throttle. So it's a massive amp spike when you're
[868.05] Zoe: doing 3D stuff and that could be the issue he's having is that the ESCs just don't have enough
[875.57] Zoe: yeah um so it could also just be the way he's got it the um depending on the center point
[884.13] Zoe: a couple of motors could just be like freaking out at the center which is again calibration
[890.21] Zoe: so you can go into the clean flight once you have it calibrated with BL Heli and you go into
[896.53] Zoe: the 3D settings that they now have and you can set like the um 3D midpoint 3D high and 3D low.
[904.37] Zoe: Yeah. And that is different on every ESC that I've tested so you have to configure each machine
[914.29] Zoe: individually and by hand. Okay. Which is a pain in the butt. How do you figure that out though?
[921.17] Zoe: Experimentation well I mean also for me personally experimentation but to calibrate it what I found
[927.25] Zoe: is that uh in the motor tab you connect it up to a battery without props. You have 3D
[932.53] Zoe: enabled right and then you can go up and down from the center point once you have it enabled
[938.61] Zoe: well 3D enabled on clean flight with there's a little switch for it yeah you go up and down on
[943.33] Zoe: the center point and you can see where the motors start and they and they you know like they start
[949.17] Zoe: spinning in positive direction yeah and then you can see where they start spinning in the negative
[953.57] Zoe: direction okay you note those numbers down and then you take those numbers you bring it over
[961.65] Zoe: into the 3D settings in the configuration tab and you match them to your 3D high and your 3D low
[969.89] Zoe: okay and that is a big trick because if you don't get that set up right you could be transitioning
[976.69] Zoe: um from positive to negative and the uh motor at least like one of your motors might not
[984.13] Zoe: completely spin in the other direction it'll just kind of like stop for a moment
[989.17] Zoe: um and that can kind of appear as sync issues um but if he's having sync issues I think it also
[997.17] Zoe: could be from the amp load I know I've had ESCs that just give up yeah uh it's a big problem
[1003.65] Zoe: what what ones do you recommend uh kiss ESCs I check a lot of you
[1011.41] Zoe: like fly do we know sent me some to test out and I've loved them so far the 24 amps and the 30 amps
[1020.29] Zoe: both 3D yeah um and then what about the helly say again yeah that is exactly what I was going
[1027.41] Zoe: to ask you what about the bl sorry um so for bl helly ESCs my favorites right now are the rotor
[1033.57] Zoe: geeks uh the rotor geek 20 amps uh they have basically the same performance as the kiss 30
[1041.73] Zoe: amp ESCs that I've um been seeing uh and then as far as that goes it was the xm20s in the micro
[1051.25] Zoe: department yeah uh at least the newer version I know there's like two versions of the xm20s and
[1057.49] Zoe: depending on which ones you get you might have better luck and you need to update them to the
[1062.85] Zoe: latest bl helly for the best performance um and then the other really good ESCs if you can get
[1070.13] Zoe: your hands on them and they're like $30 a piece uh are the grand per 20 amp ESCs that run bl helly
[1079.97] Zoe: uh um so there's definitely ESCs out there and I and if you even have like the zeus ESCs or the
[1088.13] Zoe: little bees they those work pretty okay especially if you go through the hassle of uh configuring
[1095.41] Zoe: the endpoints for 3D um it's just it really it is all about calibration and making sure you have
[1104.61] Zoe: a well-balanced machine that's it's so much more tedious than a regular multi-rotor yeah but you
[1114.58] Jack: know well worth it what what got you started originally um well I mean back in the day I
[1122.02] Zoe: watched blackout um I saw like uh videos of blackout on youtube after I started flying line of sight
[1130.02] Zoe: and uh I fell in love with the idea of FPV and at that point in time I was stuck in bed due to
[1136.5] Zoe: medical complications and I really couldn't do much yeah so I was really depressed and I was
[1143.54] Zoe: looking for a new hobby and that ended up being like the hobby um it was like the geeky hobby it
[1152.58] Zoe: was something I could um like absorb with my geeky side I could solder I could build I it was hands
[1163.06] Zoe: on and then it was also like really fun because it was a video game for me like I could put the
[1167.54] Zoe: goggles on and fly through like parts of the world that I couldn't enjoy otherwise yeah um
[1175.62] Zoe: so it was an escape for me and then I got into racing I won the first AMA race that was held
[1183.54] Zoe: in America um which was a big deal that's kind of what sparked me as like a pilot before that
[1193.46] Zoe: nobody really knew I existed um it definitely got you on all our screens yeah it helps um
[1202.82] Zoe: and then I went on to drone nationals and I competed in drone nationals and uh
[1209.38] Zoe: I that I and and through that I found 3d like I started practicing 3d about a year ago and
[1217.3] Zoe: started investigating it and uh about four months before drone nationals after the first uh
[1225.86] Zoe: well actually it's about two or three months before drone nationals I set up my first 3d rig
[1231.7] Zoe: and uh I took that to the freestyle competition which got I don't know I had bad luck like my
[1238.1] Zoe: machine uh the ESCs ended up uh giving out on me uh so that was kind of unfortunate and the
[1247.7] Zoe: freestyle event was cut from like four bouts to one bout so it was it always does it's like the
[1256.18] Jack: the sort of like dirty little you know like no no one really cares rating forever and it's like
[1263.54] Zoe: yeah it's it's kind of weird because I focused on freestyle lately and everyone's you know racing
[1269.62] Zoe: racing racing and uh I don't know it's it's it's it's kind of weird like I feel like I'm a obscure
[1279.86] Zoe: weird person in the hobby that's focusing on this weird thing that nobody gives a shit about oh or
[1286.26] Jack: yeah okay cool yeah our editor will just love that but yeah no worries hi editor how you doing
[1295.86] Jack: yeah lovely weather and then somebody asked uh why wasn't I in Dubai yeah that's that's where we
[1303.38] Jack: were getting to hang on um let me ask you the questions and then we'll go on to Dubai so I
[1309.06] Jack: can get the other guys talking hang on right so um this is this is Dan Upton your biggest fan
[1315.38] Jack: he's great he's a good guy hey Dan um uh what I really want to see is others do uh wall slash
[1322.1] Jack: ceiling plants have you done any of them where you like stick to the wall
[1326.82] Zoe: uh not yet and I think it's mainly because I just haven't had a wall to try it on
[1333.14] Zoe: like for example I didn't try going through air gates until a friend brought some air gates
[1338.66] Zoe: to the field yeah like it just hasn't been something I've practiced and something I
[1344.34] Zoe: want to do like he mentioned that the other day and I was like I want to do that I want to I want
[1350.5] Zoe: to like go inverted and just like hover upside down on a roof or something yeah um but it's
[1357.78] Zoe: really really difficult to find a spot at least locally that has walls for me to practice that on
[1365.38] Zoe: oh man yeah we but but I I do cut the grass now I can get low enough to cut grass inverted
[1373.62] Jack: which is kind of neat come around my house hi you're yeah a badass that is cool yeah that is
[1380.5] Jack: neat um I am on a quest to build my own uh 3d quad and I'm waiting for Dan Upton to get some free
[1387.38] Jack: time so we will have a a nag at him and we've also like him now yeah yeah Dan yeah we're gonna
[1394.9] Jack: record and build it um obviously we want we want you to slate it as a build video um so we're
[1402.42] Jack: going to be messing around a lot and I've bought all the wrong ESCs because I'm using little bees
[1407.62] Zoe: um no those are fine like seriously I like the little bees just make sure you have power
[1413.14] Zoe: filtering because they spike yeah your battery really hard yeah I might go for the dys if you
[1419.3] Jack: recommend them or try and fit some rotor geeks or something I don't know if you're if you're gonna
[1426.18] Zoe: get some go rotor geeks and don't look back okay um I have a set of rotor geek 20 amps running
[1433.06] Zoe: the cobra 2208s with 3d yeah and they have been bulletproof why why are you going with the
[1440.42] Jack: new 2208s because like I've gone with the 2204s I'm doing this all wrong aren't I do I need oh no
[1446.82] Zoe: no no no no no I have uh higher kv does that matter no actually honestly the 2204s are like
[1454.98] Zoe: the perfect motor that's like in between the 1806s and the 2208s in my mind okay because like
[1462.1] Zoe: you don't like the 2208s are nice because they're torquey and they have a lot of power which is why
[1466.66] Zoe: I like them yeah but first 3d they're not that smooth um because you have to stop all the motors
[1475.06] Zoe: on a dime and get them spinning the opposite direction and that's a really heavy motor to do
[1480.82] Zoe: that with okay um so like I recommend personally the 2204s um because you can still run an
[1489.3] Zoe: aggressive prop with them and still get really good performance okay um they're not too heavy
[1494.98] Zoe: so you know you don't have the torque issues that I generally run into with the larger um motors
[1502.34] Zoe: but it's that I find it kind of funny people think I'm doing it all wrong aren't I like I
[1509.06] Zoe: get that a lot like I got the wrong stuff yeah no you didn't know it's it's fine you just need
[1514.34] Jack: to calibrate it right okay all right uh we might have you on backup during like our filming day
[1520.82] Zoe: so like you might get a skype call happy to help out because like for me the one thing
[1525.94] Zoe: that I'm the most passionate about is spreading 3d multi rotors with fpv okay like I want to see
[1533.46] Zoe: that take off as the freestyle end I want to see more people doing crazy stunts that I haven't
[1540.82] Jack: even done yet okay you might you might just think we're complete philistines by what we're gonna do
[1546.42] Jack: and complete animals also um just for a laugh I wanted to ask you this and try and do it dead
[1553.06] Jack: serious but I don't think I can ask this without laughing properly but you know like counter
[1557.22] Jack: rotating props you know the prop nuts do not recommend using them because I'm slightly
[1562.98] Jack: tempted to use them just so I could have said I definitely bought the wrong stuff
[1569.86] Jack: so I'm hoping like my prop nuts will like spin off and stuff you know only if you get the non
[1575.22] Jack: nylon prop nuts yeah that's totally what I'm using I'm gonna I might be using yeah I don't
[1581.06] Jack: know I might use plumber's tape just to like appease you a little bit yeah okay yeah that's
[1586.58] Zoe: right because I've done that like I've tried it with the non nylon nuts and because the motors
[1591.78] Zoe: are stopping and they're turning in the opposite direction there's a lot of torque on them yeah it
[1596.02] Zoe: actually really does loosen up the nuts it's fantastic so yeah make sure you're feeling
[1602.74] Zoe: like get line of sight footage of that crash yeah totally yeah I mean we're just aiming to
[1607.62] Adam: be as entertaining as possible um anything we can use loosen up the nuts is going to be a good
[1614.58] Tony: oh here there we go use troy brides um doing this freedom yeah yeah actually um
[1622.98] Zoe: that's it tony's in my latest uh videos on instagram was done with uh doll uh five by four
[1629.94] Zoe: five bullnose triblades um I recommend the doll props too if you're trying 3d just because they're
[1637.3] Zoe: indestructible um like I it's it's kind of like you don't have the same amount of efficiency
[1645.94] Zoe: and thrust but you're gonna crash so it's all about spend them back
[1654.42] Zoe: you can just bend them back can't you right yeah I've yet to actually break one of the props I've
[1659.46] Jack: had to change them because they get all nicked up um what also I know we've been talking about your
[1666.34] Jack: setup but yeah just quickly um what frame uh frames um yeah what frame are you using at the moment
[1676.26] Zoe: uh the bullet drones I think xr230 I forget what the first two letters are but um bullet drones is
[1683.7] Zoe: a small uh company out of japan ran by shawn um he's link in the description he's a great frame
[1692.74] Zoe: designer um but pending that I'm also flying a twitch 109 from unique FPV which is to my knowledge
[1700.9] Zoe: the world's smallest racing drone um and then my backup rig is a zool from hovership um and atomic
[1711.06] Jack: aviation's mercury oh hovership man I haven't heard of those guys for a while like I had they
[1717.62] Jack: like micro pdb and I was very impressed with it I like hovership um I'm surprised you're not hustling
[1726.9] Jack: um x hover you know for XP yeah uh camera straight or tilted uh 35 to 45 still yeah really even for
[1742.1] Jack: 3d yeah so you're pointing even more at the ground yeah well because I was inverted I mean
[1751.54] Jack: haven't you seen the top cruise movie oh top gun yeah all right I'll play a bit of top gun later
[1759.38] Zoe: let's see now let's see let's see the thing is with that like first you start out with no tilt
[1764.26] Zoe: just to get used to it but you I mean for it to be uh for me to do the tricks that I want to do
[1771.54] Zoe: you have to have speed and to have speed you have to have tilts right yeah but if you've got tilt and
[1777.22] Jack: then you turn upside down you're looking even more at the grass no that's the thing it's a
[1783.7] Zoe: misconception if you're flying at speed and you tilt upside down and you have let's say like 30
[1789.94] Zoe: or 40 miles per hour behind you you're gonna drift for like 40 feet right so if you turn upside down
[1798.9] Zoe: and if you tilt the camera at a different angle you actually like slow down it's like an air break
[1805.22] Zoe: so you can do these maneuvers where you're going fast and all of a sudden you kind of like stop
[1809.7] Zoe: mid-air inverted and you're going in a different direction so it's a completely different way of
[1816.18] Zoe: flying you have to like really wrap your brain around it and get some practice in in order for
[1820.82] Jack: it to make sense no I'm just that's it for the rest of the episode I'm rocking back and
[1824.66] Jack: forward in the corner it just doesn't make sense like I'm turning to tell you the other big deal
[1830.1] Zoe: like is you have to have a wide field of view lens um I use a 2.1 millimeter lens for my 3d rigs
[1837.7] Zoe: so you have periphery um that way if you have like a 30 degree tilt it's not that big of a deal
[1844.1] Zoe: because you can still see the ground and you can still see the sky and the horizon okay uh
[1850.34] Adam: fat shark huh uh so yeah onto fat sharks or like one of those big head she's a fat
[1857.94] Zoe: shark kind of girl aren't you uh well they're one of my sponsors yeah yeah sorry Adam that's
[1864.42] Zoe: all you're gonna get out of her yeah boy i just i use a fat shark hdv twos um i like the wider
[1871.86] Zoe: field of view that they provide um yeah i don't know they're great goggles i like them
[1881.14] Jack: all right what one last thing from dan why do you think people aren't uh more people aren't giving
[1886.66] Jack: 3d ago because they don't know how to set it up not interested can't stomach it or something else
[1893.14] Zoe: it looks bloody old that's why it is bloody hard well okay i think it's a combination of things one
[1900.02] Zoe: there's not a lot of information available on how to do it yeah two um there's not a lot of
[1908.34] Zoe: software and hardware support so beta flight just recently got 3d to work really well on
[1915.94] Zoe: open source hardware um the kiss flight controller that just came out has proper 3d support
[1923.7] Zoe: um like the hardware is just finally getting there um and then the information like i'm trying to
[1931.22] Zoe: promote it and trying to get information out there as much as i can so that's what i'm trying to do
[1938.02] Zoe: to get and promote it um but then the other thing is that it just feels wrong when i think the human
[1944.58] Zoe: body we're hard wired to not feel comfortable when we're inverted right like you see something
[1953.06] Zoe: upside down and your brain's like no that's wrong no no no uh inverted means the opposite
[1960.18] Adam: doesn't it it means like when you use inverting photoshop it's the wrong color it means upside
[1964.5] Zoe: down that's unsettling right and the human mind is like pre-wired to be right side up
[1972.98] Zoe: so it's just and then you have the other issue it's just it's bloody hard like you have
[1980.02] Zoe: the problem of the controls being reversed when you're inverted oh god so it's it's just
[1988.9] Zoe: this whole mind f u c whatever and it takes a lot of practice and a lot of like uh
[2000.58] Zoe: just doing it just getting over the hurdle of being inverted to get that muscle
[2009.78] Jack: i find myself trying to roll in a ball like do a forward roll in order to like for some reason i
[2016.26] Jack: think if i turn my head upside down it will write the image you're talking about flying
[2021.7] Jack: now and not your emotional problems yeah totally yeah that's it i mean we've all seen down
[2028.34] Tony: dan upton flying um normal not even inverted 3d with his head going everywhere like stevie wonder
[2035.78] Tony: i wonder what he's like now has anyone recorded him i don't know you'll have to ask um you'll
[2040.82] Jack: have to ask nico because i was out flying the weekend and it was possibly one of the best
[2045.54] Jack: days ever because um he knows i've got an interest in 3d and um he came over and i was i was flying
[2055.14] Jack: my quads and i stuck it i stuck it in the 4s thank you fabby and um uh yeah drone labs are
[2061.62] Jack: back in stock by the way uh yeah so i was flying and i've you know finally sorted out air mode and
[2068.5] Jack: i'm flipping i'm holding it upside down but uh i keep you know i keep forgetting like that
[2074.34] Jack: i can cut my throttle and it's like totally against my religion so uh he comes up and he's
[2080.34] Jack: like hey man for a minute there i thought you're flying 3d and then i realized you were just
[2085.3] Jack: accelerating upside down so i might have what it takes to destroy everything uh so zoe why aren't
[2095.62] Jack: you in dubai and everyone what do you think of dubai go uh no one invited me like sad face
[2104.42] Jack: oh you better ask some of your sponsors you better sort that out why weren't you there
[2110.5] Zoe: i know i don't know it was just it was rough like i didn't i didn't have like uh i i didn't
[2118.34] Zoe: know there was like a video submission contest until it was over uh you should have been listening
[2123.78] Jack: to let drone out we had wrote a riot on and they mentioned it and danny and banny we're all talking
[2129.7] Adam: about it now now you're trying to make it sound like it's her fault but i'm listening to the cast
[2134.26] Zoe: yeah totally god guilt her i like i i was actively like trying to get in contact with the dubai
[2140.26] Zoe: organizers to be like hey what's up what's like the 101 or the 401 on it and i had commented on
[2146.9] Zoe: their facebook page on the youtube page this was like a few months ago back before they had even
[2152.66] Zoe: announced the video submission contest and uh i didn't get any response so i just it just kind of
[2161.7] Zoe: slipped through my fingers and that and i have no sponsors that pay for travel so i can't really
[2167.78] Jack: afford it oh no oh we're hoping that one day you know you and dan can fly together upside down
[2175.46] Jack: or whatever it is you do yeah and i'll have a go um it won't be so much crashing upside down more
[2182.9] Jack: just flying on the floor upside down i guess tony knows all about that like a turtle yeah
[2192.02] Jack: i um guys what did you think of dubai did you all know that banny was gonna win i didn't really
[2200.1] Jack: my money was for banny i wish i put a bet on now i wish can you imagine how much we might have won
[2208.1] Jack: if we'd put on a bet how much you bet yeah well you know like it could it could have been anything
[2214.58] Jack: i don't know i was looking forward to it any anyone any thoughts on the track how it went
[2219.14] Adam: how organized it was i didn't like it i thought it looked like a really really confusing dead
[2226.82] Adam: dinosaur snake yeah i i still thought it looked really cool at night with the light it was all
[2233.3] Tony: too rushed i mean now you announced it in march and then it was done you know a couple of months
[2238.02] Tony: later or whatever or sorry a bit before that it was just too rushed for me it's all part of dubai's
[2244.34] Adam: desperate attempt to in some way become important or useful to the world the only thing important
[2249.94] Jack: out there is the oil well exactly um it seemed a bit uh fast but the rate seemed a bit of a fast
[2258.66] Zoe: but the racing was awesome yeah it was a good summary i know it's a spectator like after they
[2266.18] Zoe: got down to the finals in the semi-finals like seeing some of those head-to-head competitions
[2271.46] Zoe: between those pilots was really really really amazing like it was seeing banny against chat
[2278.66] Zoe: noac and metal danny yeah what the hell that was awesome like like if you if you
[2287.3] Zoe: watched that and you were not thoroughly entertained and at the edge of your seat
[2291.46] Zoe: as a pilot you're you're not a pilot like that was such an amazing sight to see i gave up watching
[2299.94] Jack: it when it was three hours late when it did come on everyone crashed out and then it was one quad
[2305.7] Jack: and i was just like the lag there's no sound i was really not engaged yeah the live stuff was
[2312.18] Adam: a bit missing yeah and you think it went down in the real world you know outside the hobby
[2319.3] Frank: pants probably i don't know it's made a lot of you know newspapers and stuff
[2323.46] Adam: yeah it was in the yeah independent in bbc and all sorts of things yeah people mentioned it to
[2329.7] Adam: me at work because they know i'm the drone guy so i heard i heard overheard a conversation in the
[2337.46] Frank: in the lunch time it was sort of another table across and yeah there were people talking about
[2343.94] Frank: it like you see all this drone racing lark yeah oh that's a bit it's like it's like we matter
[2350.58] Jack: you know like we are actually something we actually exist to like normal people i don't
[2356.18] Jack: you know like we're not just some weirdos who stand in the middle of the field with some
[2360.1] Adam: like weird goggles like from yeah certainly but you do matter yeah as much as anyone else
[2367.46] Tony: oh thanks guys how many times have you took your goggles off when sitting in the middle of the park
[2373.62] Jack: and then just for what do i look like yeah what am i do i know exactly i was just like oh man
[2380.82] Tony: especially when you're on your own it's not too bad when there's a couple of you but when you're
[2384.5] Jack: on your own yeah it's just yeah it is a bit of a bizarre notion isn't it go out it does i have to
[2391.14] Adam: say to the even even you know to an insider it looks strange when people have got like
[2396.26] Adam: camp chairs and little drinks in there and the goggles oh yeah it looks like you're like doing
[2402.5] Zoe: something nefarious almost like you got the goggles on you're just like sitting with the
[2406.26] Frank: camp chair in the middle of the field it's when you duck in front of people because they've got
[2409.86] Frank: the goggles on you don't want to and then you're like hold on i could just walk straight past them
[2414.34] Adam: it'd be fun and if it's public space there's always like well we'll go to the edge because
[2419.86] Adam: we don't want to be near people and stuff so we're going to be at the edge of the public space
[2425.38] Adam: with all the goggles looking slightly creepy seeming to keep a safe distance but yeah you
[2430.74] Jack: can see why people get weirded out by it um i remember i was like i think i've told this
[2436.98] Jack: story already so forgive me but i remember when i was like first flying and i was out with nico
[2442.34] Jack: and he might even have a photo of it i'm wearing my goggles you know he's watching line of sight
[2447.54] Jack: and he decides to get his butt out and put it right next to my face whilst i'm trying to fly
[2453.22] Jack: and i'm like my signal is really bad and then he's just like dying with laughter you know like
[2458.66] Jack: his naked butt is inches from my face like you know did anyone get a good photo of that
[2466.34] Jack: probably something exists yeah i think that's why i torture chris so much
[2471.06] Jack: like do you ever feel the urge to do that you know you've got a certain someone you fly with
[2475.3] Jack: and you just go over and like you know press a few uh switches and you know tickle them
[2481.06] Zoe: i never i never screw with their transmitter although i do take selfies because i'm really
[2486.74] Zoe: tall i'll like do the um the peace sign behind their heads like the bunny ears and i'll get my
[2494.34] Zoe: arm around them without them noticing and just like take a really good selfie um but beyond that
[2500.82] Zoe: it's for a week yeah oh yeah no they don't like they don't know it until they check instagram or
[2505.38] Jack: facebook uh or pull or put lipos in a tree gabe what are you on about wait what someone in the chat
[2516.58] Adam: a little earlier was saying that dji are going to be making racing drones yeah i hear that who
[2521.94] Adam: what why because they can oh yeah they can do what they want maybe they are a bit embarrassed
[2529.62] Jack: that they weren't in any way doing it before oh my god man can you imagine that um i mean
[2537.54] Jae: the sport flying of the phantom four i hope i don't know yeah i i could see that because
[2544.5] Zoe: like think about if we had dji making a racing drone that anybody could just pick up and fly
[2550.82] Zoe: the whole market penetration the whole like mainstreaming of the sport would really take
[2556.26] Adam: off yeah but it does that doubtful voice in jacksepticeye like no it's ours we don't want them and
[2564.02] Jae: that's better i get that yeah i've already hosted events where they did like dji again but with
[2569.54] Adam: phantoms yeah i guess if you just rip the camera and the legs off the phantom it'd go pretty fast
[2575.86] Jack: i don't know like you know will they get it right though will they you know will there be an actual
[2582.82] Jack: rate mode will they insist on putting a satellite yeah like a gps on it you know and will it be
[2592.98] Jack: white because that's just going to get covered in mud instantly um i think so i think they'll have
[2599.06] Zoe: the gps on it just so they have the ability for new pilots just to fly it and then they'll have
[2605.46] Tony: a rate mode probably no i want them to suffer i like i did to be fair my first cmr i put a um
[2616.02] Tony: what were they called what's that thing nasa light
[2620.1] Tony: dji um nasa v2 yeah like nasty little flyaway box bastards
[2628.74] Tony: i put one of them in the zmr 250 and flew it to learn you're an animal thank you it was it was
[2637.46] Adam: a very hard fit but it worked i thought it'd be quite cool i mean then aside from my talking
[2645.54] Adam: about them running away they're not bad you know they're quite fast with the other hardware
[2652.02] Adam: it wasn't bad gabe said it was going back to china they did go back to china yeah i saw in
[2659.46] Adam: fairness it was headed off to moscow roughly but i suppose china's on the next step
[2667.14] Jack: maybe they could make fly parks like skate parks danger rising with mass market without some kind
[2674.1] Adam: of age red or schooling literally already done that yeah a little bit yeah hidden valley
[2682.58] Jack: yeah yeah yeah dom's done it for example dom maybe that's what the point is we need more of
[2688.9] Adam: these places not yeah yeah fair enough well in america there's arizona or you know other states
[2695.62] Jack: that or area 51 uh even though that video did get taken down yeah did that video get taken down
[2704.9] Jack: is that person still alive anymore someone flew over area 51
[2708.98] Adam: well really yeah yeah for real man didn't the alien blow that up in uh independence
[2717.06] Jack: um literally taking an hour to undo four screws because of this lol says leo
[2725.3] Jack: thank you leo yeah thanks for tuning in uh right we're on our like last 10 minute countdown i
[2731.86] Jack: don't know whether you guys want to talk uh talk some more like what do you think about the phantom
[2736.02] Jae: four seems nice i like the box yet yeah i want one i maybe i'll wait for this and not the first
[2745.62] Jae: release but yeah i wouldn't mind one they look like they're gonna be fun and they fly for quite
[2750.1] Jae: a while which is they had a you know they had a bonus 28 minutes surprisingly heavy thing jay
[2755.7] Jack: what's this about your apm mini quad or something bizarre like that you know the pixel races coming
[2761.46] Jae: out and it's going to ruin your life see the apm was always the 8-bit stuff so i mean the pix
[2766.42] Jae: fixes the 32-bit so that always has more promise with more memory more function than faster
[2771.22] Jack: processing so you're gonna you're gonna join the ggi dark side with mini quads with gps on them
[2778.18] Adam: no i think i think you know i like the idea of just letting go and having the things buzzing
[2782.74] Adam: around a bit and then charging off in a race can you imagine what they're going to do waypoint
[2787.78] Jack: the race do you want to just make it any more boring why don't you just attach zip lines to
[2792.34] Jae: them and just like a rear prop it all goes smaller so you're just going to get the same
[2798.58] Jae: things in smaller boxes like pcs like everything you know it's just the natural progression for
[2804.02] Adam: technologies to go smaller iphone 6 is bigger it is like pcs isn't it i remember the whole
[2809.54] Adam: ah mine's 32-bit none of your shitty 8-bit business
[2814.66] Jack: that mecha drive was fine
[2818.66] Zoe: it's got sbi bus
[2823.78] Jack: oh i don't know yeah uh jay yeah what are you doing with that thing i hear secret projects
[2831.06] Jae: well i just wanted to see if it could do a mapping of an area and stuff so it was just how small
[2835.22] Jae: could you fit the technology into a small thing and that's the 250 size is an awesome size for
[2839.78] Jae: doing pretty much anything apart from lifting a dslr anything else you can do with the 250 size
[2845.86] Frank: probably at this stage with accessible stuff so there was what um uh chad novak mentioned about
[2852.66] Frank: on the last uh flight does podcast or something where someone was doing some massive spectacle
[2859.22] Frank: that they were trying to get going of race racing quads that were like 900 millimeter size
[2865.7] Frank: so there are massive things flying through the air making enormous amounts of noise
[2870.1] Jack: i like that that could be quite fun to watch forgive me for turning into uh jeremy clarkson
[2875.86] Jae: but yeah i like the sound of that turn into clarkson you have to do the voice yes
[2884.9] Jae: you were saying earlier zoe i think 3d helicopters do look the part and all the tricks that they do
[2889.46] Jae: but they also sound the part when they're making noises back and forth so they are much better to
[2894.66] Jae: watch in a performance really so i think you know yeah rocket my next step is going to be making
[2900.58] Zoe: like a giant 800 millimeter 3d quad um amazing that would be pretty cool to watch definitely
[2909.7] Jack: you could definitely rip some dicks off with that
[2916.18] Jack: this thing can blend
[2922.34] Jack: yeah sorry i'm not sorry
[2926.9] Jack: never come here no no we want you to more ominous jack yeah so our final question of
[2934.5] Frank: why do you think there are not more any more women in fpv racing people like jack
[2940.42] Adam: maybe it's because i have the events in dubai
[2947.14] Zoe: maybe i don't know it's it's uh there's no good answer to that like put me on the spot why don't
[2955.2] Jack: you i don't i don't know i think it's it's a little bit of herd mentality it's um and a lot to do with
[2962.56] Jack: um conditioning at a young age you know like when you're little it's like nope you can't
[2969.04] Jack: play with barbies because you're a boy and you know like girls you know you got so upset about
[2974.16] Jack: that didn't you yeah i did i did you're knitting and dancing and that's all you're allowed to do
[2980.32] Frank: sorry that's all right i saw on hexaneer that you were doing uh like a stem thing a stem group
[2988.72] Zoe: last year yeah so i was running a small workshop to get kids building and flying their first fpv rick
[2996.88] Frank: yeah what was the sort of balance in that like is there a lot of interest equally from boys and
[3001.76] Zoe: girls or so actually it started out from this one girl that saw me flying in the park
[3008.48] Zoe: and her parents really like liked it too and they thought it was really neat and they just
[3014.8] Zoe: kind of approached me on putting together a workshop for their kids and so the part
[3021.84] Zoe: she was nine years old and then we had a 10 year old and a 13 year old before the makeup industry
[3030.0] Jae: no i mean i just had a workshop on saturday and it was part of british science week and for the
[3035.28] Jae: actual whole attendance out of 1700 it was a split 50 50 uh boys and girls and actually on
[3041.2] Jae: the drone course that i ran for the day i was surprised to see there was more than just you
[3046.48] Jae: know it's about 30 percent with girls that come along so it was it's actually quite refreshing to
[3050.48] Jae: see them take on the uptake and then this was just to fly them you know learn a little bit about them
[3054.96] Jae: to fly them but there is a lot more girls doing science and taking up the technology which is
[3059.04] Jae: really refreshing yeah it's really good to see yeah i mean yeah tony just mentioned in chat
[3065.28] Jack: that he's gonna now paint his um his uh goggles barbie pink in honor of my repressed desires
[3073.84] Adam: that sort of stereotyping that causes the problems i think so i would like to see it real men wear
[3080.08] Jack: pink goggles that is uh right guys we've almost run out of time look you little let's drone out as
[3090.72] Jack: um stick around if you can and support the thursday night show and listen to some music
[3095.76] Jack: guys on skype with me you need to stick around because we're going to sort out maybe talking to
[3100.64] Jack: chris from flight test podcast and have a word with him maybe arrange a little after hour show
[3107.2] Jack: so you guys might get a little bonus double podcast one night where we jump over to um
[3114.4] Jack: google hangouts and have a chat with him but uh don't forget the mini air show uh you're very
[3122.0] Jack: welcome zoe if you can come over on the seventh of may uh zoe what's your youtube channel so people
[3127.36] Zoe: can follow you uh zoe uh or zoe fpv or zoe full throttle on youtube um and your instagram
