[143.2] Dom: I mean, two years ago to the day since I liked your webpage, because I think I liked it on

[168.92] David O'Neal: It's like, you know, it started out with Sarah and I talking into a web camera about why
[174.4] David O'Neal: we like drones and guys like you joined us up and said, hey, I like drones too.
[179.24] David O'Neal: And then all of a sudden, you know, we're about to hit drone day number two, which is
[184.68] David O'Neal: all around the world.
[185.68] David O'Neal: We got 150 teams with over 50,000 people with like 50 countries this year participating.
[192.56] David O'Neal: I mean, this is this is way beyond anything we created.
[196.28] David O'Neal: This is this is what the community created.
[198.28] David O'Neal: That's what all you guys did.
[199.28] David O'Neal: And I mean, now you guys have your show.
[201.16] David O'Neal: I mean, it's just it's so cool to to be with all of you.
[205.56] David O'Neal: I mean, this was amazing.
[206.88] David O'Neal: It's just something that we thought should be out there.
[209.8] David O'Neal: It's like we want to talk about drones.
[211.36] David O'Neal: And we were just sitting at the table watching so many YouTube videos of people flying drones
[216.2] David O'Neal: and thought other people would like it.
[218.72] David O'Neal: And now look at this.
[219.8] David O'Neal: I mean, we got we got the whole world.
[222.48] David O'Neal: It's just it's amazing how we all came together.
[224.6] Adam Juniper: It's about these 149 other events that we could be going to.
[228.36] Jae: David, I think it was quite interesting because it was only a year ago.
[231.4] Jae: I was just starting with travel north of the country or the south of the country.
[234.68] Jae: And I went south and I met Dom and met all these other people from the community here
[238.68] Jae: because you did the show from there and said, look, where's some of the teams?
[241.76] Jae: So I think that community has grown from what you started a day a year ago.
[246.24] Jae: Stover, it's it's it's blossoming all over the world, I think.
[249.92] Jae: So we're done.
[251.0] David O'Neal: I mean, thank you.
[252.24] David O'Neal: I mean, it's it's what we you know, we put the possibility out there that like,
[256.0] David O'Neal: why do we have to have the media talking about, you know, our hobby and our passion
[261.08] David O'Neal: in a negative way? Why do we have to stand for that?
[263.2] David O'Neal: Why do we know if we if we did nothing and we just kept flying our drones
[267.12] David O'Neal: and said, well, you know, I'll shrug our shoulders.
[269.08] David O'Neal: We're not going to do anything about it.
[271.16] David O'Neal: Then we would have all these laws.
[272.92] David O'Neal: We wouldn't we'd be sitting in some weird field behind, you know,
[276.36] David O'Neal: some kind of nuclear compost where they said, OK, drones are allowed over here.
[280.04] David O'Neal: And, you know, we wouldn't have any of the things we had.
[282.52] David O'Neal: But the whole world got together.
[284.16] David O'Neal: And we said, look, we only got one message for you guys.
[286.68] David O'Neal: Drones are good. That's it.
[288.6] David O'Neal: And, you know, just saying that starts a conversation.
[291.72] David O'Neal: And all of you guys out there in the world, the community took it on.
[295.16] David O'Neal: And that's that's really what there is.
[296.76] David O'Neal: It's like, yes, we started it.
[298.52] David O'Neal: But as you guys did the work and you guys continue to you guys
[301.72] David O'Neal: continue to do the work and the friendships and the things, I mean, it's amazing.
[305.24] David O'Neal: I'm so, you know, humbled by the whole thing.
[307.64] David O'Neal: It's just it's it's incredible how everybody came together with this idea.
[311.52] Edd: Have you seen the press response get better over time?
[313.88] Edd: Is this positive message is getting out?
[316.6] David O'Neal: Yeah, you know, I was last year on the first drone day.
[321.44] David O'Neal: A lot of the news was, you know, drones are going to cause airplane disasters.
[325.44] David O'Neal: Drones are going to drones are going to spy on your, you know, your daughter,
[329.16] David O'Neal: on your wife, on, you know, your house, et cetera.
[332.12] David O'Neal: And then right after drone day, we did an interview with Forbes magazine
[336.76] David O'Neal: and we did an interview with The Huffington Post and they had a bunch of other
[340.8] David O'Neal: panelists on their Brendan Schulman and, you know, some lawyers and things.
[344.48] David O'Neal: And the whole tone was different.
[347.24] David O'Neal: And then as as it's gone through, I've been watching the mainstream media
[350.36] David O'Neal: over the last year, it's we were in a newspaper article about two months ago
[354.2] David O'Neal: here in Orange County in California.
[356.2] David O'Neal: And the lady was like, oh, we just want to do an article about, you know,
[359.36] David O'Neal: what the best drone is this year to buy for Christmas?
[362.2] David O'Neal: And where the year before it would have been like, oh, we want to do
[365.24] David O'Neal: an article about these evil drones and how they're going to get in the way of
[368.84] Adam Juniper: Santa Claus's sleigh and yeah, exactly.
[372.36] David O'Neal: And now it went to like, you know, hey, you know, maybe maybe this is a good idea
[376.32] David O'Neal: to have kids learning this in school because they'll go outside and they'll
[379.64] David O'Neal: learn robotics and they'll learn software and they'll they'll learn coding.
[383.32] David O'Neal: And there's so much that you can do together.
[386.0] David O'Neal: And, you know, now I've just seen now I see it with drone racing.
[389.64] David O'Neal: You know, now it's it's more accepted now for me to go down to the beach and take
[392.96] David O'Neal: my drone out and take pictures of the sunset like people will still talk to you.
[396.2] David O'Neal: But it's not it's no longer they're not asking me if I'm with the FBI or if I'm
[400.88] David O'Neal: spying, you know, or anything like that.
[402.88] Adam Juniper: It's just more often asking, which one is that?
[405.2] David O'Neal: Is that the latest? Yeah, they want to know, is that the phantom?
[408.12] David O'Neal: Is that the unique? What is that?
[409.52] David O'Neal: And I mean, the general public knows it.
[411.44] David O'Neal: And, you know, I just want you guys to get present to the fact that you did this.
[416.8] David O'Neal: It's like, yeah, you could say we did it, but it's all of you.
[419.72] David O'Neal: So I mean, just take a minute and look around at your mates because you guys all
[423.8] David O'Neal: did this and you're continuing it.
[425.56] David O'Neal: And it's, you know, I see that the people that put on the drone day events,
[430.08] David O'Neal: they're known in their community now.
[431.4] David O'Neal: You know, the fire department knows who they are.
[433.2] David O'Neal: The police know who they are.
[434.36] David O'Neal: If they need help, they ask them about it.
[436.2] David O'Neal: They're well known in the media.
[437.76] David O'Neal: They forged companies out of it.
[440.0] David O'Neal: Realtors contacted them.
[441.36] David O'Neal: I mean, everybody that stood up and said, look, I don't want my my passion to be
[445.64] David O'Neal: regulated any further and I don't want to be branded as a criminal or as a hooligan.
[450.08] David O'Neal: So now everybody's seen as a great guy.
[452.96] David O'Neal: I mean, there's still a fight to fight, but it's much different this year because
[457.24] Edd: I've got to ask you about that interview that you did on on TV over in the States
[462.4] Edd: where that that drone flew some contraband into prison.
[467.28] David O'Neal: Oh, yeah.
[468.16] Edd: That was I mean, it was hysterical watching because it was the media didn't
[471.52] Edd: quite know whether to be paranoid about the drone or whether to be really pleased
[475.24] Edd: that there was someone being interviewed that really knew their stuff and was
[478.56] Edd: talking talking a positive message.
[480.88] Edd: I mean, how did they approach you and if you had anything for any follow up from
[484.64] Edd: that at all?
[486.08] David O'Neal: Yeah, usually and it still happens.
[488.84] David O'Neal: I mean, you know, the media generally wants to get ratings or if you're a
[493.32] David O'Neal: newspaper, you want to get readers, you know, and you want people to read your
[496.52] David O'Neal: read your stuff. So usually if you post something like, you know,
[499.52] David O'Neal: Dom Robinson caught heroin flying over prison, that's a lot nicer
[504.52] David O'Neal: story for them than Dom Robinson chasing pigeon.
[508.4] David O'Neal: So which which which he does chase pigeons.
[512.28] David O'Neal: Everybody's seen the famous stop the pigeon video.
[514.8] David O'Neal: That's one of my favorites.
[516.04] Dom: But I run off with my smack.
[517.68] David O'Neal: That was I was I think at the time there was a story about I think it was I
[525.88] David O'Neal: forget was a Denmark or something training Eagles to take down drones or
[529.56] David O'Neal: something like that.
[530.68] David O'Neal: And so they they were kind of talking in that there you go.
[534.16] David O'Neal: I know it's one of those one of those countries that you know, the London police
[539.2] Adam Juniper: have been copying from training from them.
[541.56] Dom: But they took. Oh, yeah.
[542.64] Dom: They took out a SEMA X5C.
[544.28] Dom: You can take that out with a hairdryer.
[545.68] Dom: If you put it right here, a proper, proper drone like a racer, it would lose its legs.
[550.96] Adam Juniper: I was thinking, you know, my my my inspire.
[556.52] Adam Juniper: Yeah, sure.
[557.0] Adam Juniper: The inspire is going to crash, but it's going to really hurt the eagle in the
[559.96] Adam Juniper: process. Oh, yeah.
[561.76] Dom: And the bird's not going to catch it and bring it to the ground.
[563.64] Dom: It's going to hit it, go out, let go of it.
[565.92] Dom: It's going to fall on controllably, which is the last thing you want to try to do.
[569.84] Jae: Well, I think that I prefer the Japanese one.
[572.16] Jae: Let's take drones out of the sky with another drone with a net.
[576.2] David O'Neal: Well, have you seen the Chinese?
[578.04] David O'Neal: They've got the laser, the drone that they've got a laser that disrupts the battery
[582.44] David O'Neal: and just makes the drone fall out of the sky.
[584.44] David O'Neal: So there's a there's like a death ray and you put the death ray on the drone.
[587.96] David O'Neal: If you shoot it in the right spot, it's done.
[590.08] Adam Juniper: And there's the again, fall out of the sky being the key point.
[593.12] Adam Juniper: Right. There's a guy with a TV antenna that's designed to screw up the control
[597.32] Dom: link. That's the which is which is illegal under a Geneva Convention.
[601.68] Dom: You can't flood even military can't flood airwaves.
[605.52] Dom: There you go. Yeah, all that stuff.
[607.2] David O'Neal: But there's another one where you can actually there's a hacker that can take control
[611.44] David O'Neal: because none of these drones have passwords on their firmware.
[614.56] David O'Neal: So you can literally do a live hack if it's a just a standard phantom or a standard,
[619.28] David O'Neal: you know, unique. They can because it's a government repo.
[623.68] David O'Neal: Right. A government fee for.
[625.44] David O'Neal: Yeah. Well, it has no password on it.
[627.48] David O'Neal: So it's just like a hacker running the right software within the right range can
[632.0] David O'Neal: take control of your drone and control it himself if that's what he chooses to do.
[636.0] David O'Neal: I mean, you know, there's these air sensors on tires and cars and it's where the air
[640.48] David O'Neal: pressure gets monitors. Those have no password.
[642.92] David O'Neal: So a hacker, when you want to take out a high level target, they they hack into the
[646.68] David O'Neal: tire system on your car and then they can flatten the tires and then ambush the
[651.16] David O'Neal: vehicle. And it's the same with a drone.
[653.2] David O'Neal: There's the weakest point is that is that non password on the firmware.
[656.68] David O'Neal: And there is no encryption in that.
[658.84] David O'Neal: And because of that, that's where the vulnerability is.
[662.4] David O'Neal: But anyway, getting back to the CBS deal, they, you know, they wanted to talk about
[667.08] David O'Neal: how how horrible this was.
[668.56] David O'Neal: And I said, yeah, you know, we'll talk about it.
[670.8] David O'Neal: And I just said, look, anybody can do anything they want with a gun, with a car,
[676.52] David O'Neal: with a with a broomstick if they want to.
[678.72] David O'Neal: I mean, it's not it's not the drone that that we should be afraid of.
[682.72] David O'Neal: It's it's going to be the people.
[684.2] David O'Neal: And that's and it's other people being afraid of other people is the issue.
[687.64] David O'Neal: And it has nothing to do with drones.
[689.64] David O'Neal: It's really just fear and people saying something about a certain group of people
[693.88] David O'Neal: in order to be afraid of them.
[695.2] David O'Neal: And, you know, we have our our movie, The Drone Invasion.
[698.28] David O'Neal: And in that we talk a lot about electricity.
[700.76] David O'Neal: And we talk about how scared people were of electricity, as stupid as that sounds.
[704.8] David O'Neal: But people wanted to ban it.
[706.28] David O'Neal: They wanted to ban electricity.
[708.84] Jack: Crazy. And MP3s.
[710.36] Jack: Don't forget MP3s.
[712.28] David O'Neal: MP3s. Yeah. And and mirrors.
[714.8] David O'Neal: You know, there was cameras like everything is my favorite.
[718.12] Adam Juniper: No, no, no one wanted to ban cars.
[720.96] Adam Juniper: But they said you should drive along really slowly.
[722.8] Adam Juniper: Have a man in front waving a red flag.
[725.32] Adam Juniper: So I love Pennsylvania, is it?
[727.4] Adam Juniper: Or certainly a and there was a thing saying if you saw some cows
[731.8] Adam Juniper: or something coming down the road, you have to dismantle your car
[735.04] Adam Juniper: and allow the cows to pass without being upset by it.
[738.52] David O'Neal: Right. There was there was a lot of laws like that where they just
[741.56] David O'Neal: or they would say there was a there was an article I read as part of the film
[744.52] David O'Neal: when I was researching it.
[745.68] David O'Neal: It was, you know, thieves can come in the night and rape your women
[750.32] David O'Neal: and make off in the night at a high speed because they've got a car now.
[753.52] David O'Neal: So beware of cars.
[755.2] David O'Neal: And they wanted, you know, they were training.
[756.96] David O'Neal: They were training dogs to listen for the sound of cars so they would howl.
[760.76] David O'Neal: And so that all the dogs in that township would know, listen,
[764.28] David O'Neal: there's one of those evil cars coming.
[765.68] David O'Neal: Everyone be ready.
[766.96] David O'Neal: You know, this is taking taking the horseman's job away.
[770.16] David O'Neal: This is taking the horse's job away.
[772.0] David O'Neal: Like the carriage makers are going to go under.
[774.16] David O'Neal: Like this is going to be a horrible thing.
[776.08] David O'Neal: So it's just funny and weird.
[779.04] Adam Juniper: It's been terrible for the carriage making industry.
[783.36] Edd: So David, so from drones, I mean, you're probably sat in the company of one
[788.76] Edd: or two that really like to fly the moo cows in the sky.
[792.64] Edd: There's a few of us here like to race.
[794.16] Edd: And is it right you had a big event on the 26th?
[797.72] David O'Neal: Yeah, we just pretty much every month here in Southern California,
[801.96] David O'Neal: we started a a drone racing group and we're affiliated with a with a large
[808.56] David O'Neal: group out here called Multi GP.
[810.48] David O'Neal: And what Multi GP has about 300 chapters around the world.
[813.4] David O'Neal: They've got several in the in the UK right now.
[816.24] David O'Neal: They're I think they're they're still in their infancy there in the UK.
[818.84] David O'Neal: It hasn't quite caught on as much as it has here.
[821.24] David O'Neal: But, you know, when you're drone racing, you know, think about you as a poor drone
[825.44] David O'Neal: pilot. You want to go out.
[826.36] David O'Neal: You want to go shoot some stuff.
[827.52] David O'Neal: You want to find somewhere you're not going to get, you know, you're not going
[829.8] David O'Neal: to get nicked by the by the law enforcement people and you want to be able to fly
[834.76] David O'Neal: your drone. Well, think about the poor plight of the drone racer.
[836.88] David O'Neal: He's got a little tiny drone that goes 200 miles or 100 miles an hour.
[841.32] David O'Neal: And he's got goggles.
[842.52] David O'Neal: He looks like an alien and he wants to sit cross legged in a park and zip around
[846.68] David O'Neal: trees like he's the first one to go to jail.
[849.28] David O'Neal: So it's like finding a place to go with like eight other guys that all look like
[853.84] David O'Neal: aliens that all have these weird electronics and these little explosive
[857.04] David O'Neal: looking batteries and set them out in a park somewhere.
[859.36] David O'Neal: It's a tough sale to anybody.
[861.52] Jack: So it's cool to get the whole setting up the course disrupting, you know,
[868.68] Jack: disrupt disrupting the land, putting up weird flags, you know, one step away
[874.8] David O'Neal: from PVC pipe and drill.
[876.72] David O'Neal: And then there's these horrific crashes and things catch on fire.
[880.4] David O'Neal: I mean, we had a drone catch on fire this last weekend.
[882.6] David O'Neal: And, you know, it's it's a rough go.
[884.4] David O'Neal: And then the sound is just buzzing.
[886.36] David O'Neal: And, you know, we find underground parking structures to go into our old field.
[890.92] David O'Neal: So what's missing in the world right now is a good place to drone race.
[894.96] David O'Neal: So we created a place for people to go.
[897.76] David O'Neal: It's, you know, they're part of a part of this multi GP League.
[901.68] David O'Neal: And what's nice is we have these timing sensors.
[904.04] David O'Neal: You can run the course, you can rank yourself against other people in the world.
[907.84] David O'Neal: So, you know, you see where you're at.
[909.36] David O'Neal: And then there's actually like a reason for it, because at the end of the year,
[912.6] David O'Neal: they have semi finals and finals and you can actually win a prize.
[915.96] David O'Neal: And I mean, we had probably almost 90 people come out to the race and just had
[922.64] David O'Neal: a blast, had so much fun.
[924.24] David O'Neal: We just put the YouTube episode of it up on online last night.
[928.24] David O'Neal: And it's just cool seeing everybody and seeing what they're racing.
[931.48] David O'Neal: And there's so many modifications.
[932.8] David O'Neal: But that's really the next thing.
[934.92] David O'Neal: And how big is it in the UK right now?
[936.92] David O'Neal: Is it growing or is it still kind of small?
[940.04] Dom: As the race meets the moment, I think the recent one near us, about 50,
[945.72] Dom: 48 people or something in the triangle, for instance, one.
[949.32] Dom: So there are a few.
[950.56] Dom: There are a few quite large meets up and there's a great group called Rotoracing
[953.6] Dom: are going to do the timing gates and the race stuff at the drone day this year.
[959.72] Adam Juniper: The reigning world champion is British.
[962.32] Dom: Yeah. Yes.
[963.28] David O'Neal: Yeah. Luke Bannister.
[964.52] David O'Neal: Yeah. He's a big he's a he's a 15
[969.12] David O'Neal: years old, just one to two hundred and fifty thousand American dollars.
[972.96] David O'Neal: I don't know what that is.
[973.72] David O'Neal: And you know, pounds or whatever.
[977.72] David O'Neal: But that's what that's what his mom told him anyway.
[982.4] David O'Neal: Quite a bit of money.
[983.28] David O'Neal: And it's I mean, it's it's growing.
[985.32] David O'Neal: And I mean, it's just it's another thing.
[987.12] Dom: Why did you know David was sorry?
[989.76] Dom: Luke was going to be our headliner at the Mini Air Show.
[993.6] Dom: Oh, but yeah, but last year you chose the middle of winter
[998.08] Dom: for us to do the event.
[999.6] Dom: Yeah, I remember that.
[1001.76] Dom: This year you chose the weeks before the GCSE in the school exams.
[1006.16] Dom: And unfortunately, Luke Luke's got to do his school exams that weekend
[1009.4] Dom: as of a couple of our other flyers.
[1010.76] Dom: So it was a real well.
[1013.56] David O'Neal: Well, we'll probably have something later in the year that'll make up
[1016.44] David O'Neal: for all of that for you guys.
[1017.44] David O'Neal: Well, we'll announce that later.
[1018.96] Adam Juniper: Well, it might give somebody else any word on the arrival of a girlfriend
[1021.96] Adam Juniper: for him to completely put him off the drones and get them.
[1024.64] David O'Neal: Yeah, that that would be that that would be the strategy.
[1028.56] David O'Neal: If I was on the opposing team, I would I would hire a couple of young
[1031.4] David O'Neal: 15 year old girls to just go over there and and tell him how great looking he is.
[1035.08] Adam Juniper: And I'm not sure you can say 15 year old girl.
[1039.48] David O'Neal: I thought consent was like 14 in the UK.
[1041.68] David O'Neal: Is it not? We're not animals.
[1044.24] Dom: I think we have to try and dial Luke into the conversation.
[1046.64] Jack: I wonder if he's around.
[1048.08] Jack: I can. He was on TV earlier.
[1052.4] David O'Neal: Anyway, that's a fun strategy.
[1053.64] David O'Neal: But I mean, someone asked me, like, well, is International Drone Day relevant
[1056.96] David O'Neal: this year, seeming how, you know, how things have been going?

[1129.52] David O'Neal: And honestly, I just didn't know enough about drones.

[1134.44] David O'Neal: I was scared to ask a question on the message boards
[1137.0] David O'Neal: because every time I would ask something, I would just get my ass
[1140.24] David O'Neal: handed to me because they'd say, wow, you're an idiot.
[1142.12] David O'Neal: How long have you been flying drones?
[1143.2] David O'Neal: I'm like two weeks.
[1144.0] David O'Neal: They'd be like, you have no business flying drones.
[1146.0] David O'Neal: You're horrible. You're this.
[1147.12] David O'Neal: And so I would just I was literally just afraid.
[1149.4] David O'Neal: And I'm like, well, you know, if I make my own show, I can put people on
[1152.84] David O'Neal: that know what the hell they're talking about.
[1154.24] David O'Neal: I could ask them things.
[1155.52] David O'Neal: And there's going to be other guys like me that don't know
[1157.76] David O'Neal: and I don't want to ask.
[1159.52] David O'Neal: And so that's exactly what happened.
[1161.08] David O'Neal: We just kept asking questions and then we'd get, you know, bigger people
[1164.8] David O'Neal: on the guys that built drones.

[1167.72] David O'Neal: Then we're talking to, you know, the world and they're all sharing what it was.
[1171.92] David O'Neal: And it's like I've learned so much.
[1173.88] David O'Neal: And I just always wanted our place, you know, our show to be a place
[1177.16] David O'Neal: where I don't care if you've just started or if you've never seen a racing drone
[1180.44] David O'Neal: or a regular drone, you could just ask whatever and you're going to be treated
[1183.56] David O'Neal: with respect and you're going to have a bunch of friends that's just going
[1187.44] David O'Neal: to show you the way because I mean, that's that's really what there is in life.
[1190.4] David O'Neal: Right. It's like you want to try something out.
[1192.4] David O'Neal: It'd be really nice if someone could help you out rather than punch you

[1196.68] David O'Neal: So it kind of started out as kind of almost out of anger because I was just

[1240.36] David O'Neal: I mean, there was no women when we started.
[1242.08] David O'Neal: Now we've Sarah brought women to our sport, which is cool.

[1329.68] David O'Neal: Like just the fact that, you know, we were able to get in at that time

[1339.48] David O'Neal: But I really think it it really gave everybody else an opportunity to.

[1350.28] David O'Neal: like the mini air show, it's like an institution now.

[1358.96] Dom: I really do like the brand that you created that most people still
[1362.44] Dom: at some level in their logo use that, you know, the teams I'm still in contact

[1373.52] Dom: with international drone community afterwards, I think it was really good.

[2254.43] Dom: insurance and we're not flying for a valuable consideration
[2257.63] Dom: for money or for something like money then we actually I'd
[2262.63] Dom: say we've got the regulations pretty good over here.
[2264.63] Dom: Australia's just taking a big step today by letting people
[2268.43] Dom: fly commercially with anything under two kilograms without
[2271.03] Dom: a license, which is interesting.
[2275.43] Dom: Might shake the bag up a bit, but how's things over in the
[2278.93] Dom: States at the moment?
[2280.43] David O'Neal: Well, you know anything that's more than two sticks of butter
[2283.63] David O'Neal: has to be registered, you know, that was the famous thing
[2286.53] David O'Neal: there's the two sticks of butter don't weigh very much but
[2289.33] David O'Neal: anything bigger than two sticks of butter which includes a
[2291.53] David O'Neal: lot of you know, what I would consider toy drones or children's
[2294.53] David O'Neal: drones has to be registered which is a little bit, you
[2298.23] David O'Neal: know, it's very strange and it goes back to like people arguing
[2302.33] David O'Neal: about the guns.
[2303.03] David O'Neal: They're like you can have a gun here and have as many guns
[2305.53] David O'Neal: as you like.
[2306.03] David O'Neal: You don't have to register them.
[2307.13] David O'Neal: But if I have one toy drone, I've got to put a number on
[2309.73] David O'Neal: that and I've got to register and I've got to pay so it's a
[2312.93] David O'Neal: little I mean, I agree there should be something done.
[2317.33] David O'Neal: I would like to I would like to go down to the like the DVLA
[2320.83] David O'Neal: of drones and be able to say like, okay, here's my drone
[2324.53] David O'Neal: license, you know, and yes, we have that section 333 deal
[2327.93] David O'Neal: that you can get.
[2329.33] David O'Neal: However, even that's strange and you have to become a private
[2332.93] David O'Neal: pilot in order to really use it.
[2334.73] David O'Neal: So that's a bit murky and a bit bit weird.
[2339.13] David O'Neal: It would just right now the laws are still very confusing
[2342.33] David O'Neal: because we have all 50 states, right?
[2344.63] David O'Neal: Then we have a central government.
[2346.13] David O'Neal: The central government says I have to register my drone.
[2348.63] David O'Neal: I don't have to fly.
[2349.53] David O'Neal: I can't fly over 400 feet near an airport or near a stadium
[2353.03] David O'Neal: or an electrical thing and not over people and then I'm good.
[2356.23] David O'Neal: But then the states come in and then even the city councils,
[2359.73] David O'Neal: you know, the city the city areas pass their own laws, which
[2363.83] David O'Neal: are weird too because well, which law is real?
[2366.53] David O'Neal: Is it the one that you know, the president is saying or is
[2369.33] David O'Neal: it the one that the City Council person made up?
[2371.43] David O'Neal: So it's a very murky area still and we don't have anything
[2374.23] David O'Neal: solved at the moment.
[2375.03] David O'Neal: It's still quite of a mess.
[2376.83] Dom: So how it structures more or less out and Jay and Adam, correct
[2379.63] Dom: me if I get this wrong, but how it structures out more or less
[2382.53] Dom: here is if it is at a national level, the airspace is pretty
[2385.43] Dom: open. But once you get once you get down to where you take
[2388.93] Dom: off from you get into having permission to fly.
[2392.53] Dom: So if you're on public land and there's no by-law saying that
[2395.63] Dom: you can't take off, then you can fly then you can launch
[2399.13] Dom: basically. And after that, you've got to stay 50 meters away
[2402.63] Dom: from everything pretty simply that that's it.
[2407.73] Dom: And that means that the local councils can then pass by-laws
[2411.63] Dom: saying you can't fly in public parks or you can't fly.
[2415.13] Dom: In fact, that's there's only half of our city locally because
[2419.13] Dom: of a legacy of the two councils coming together.
[2422.23] Dom: Only half of our city has any by-laws and that's that you
[2425.53] Dom: can't fly in the local parks.
[2428.03] Dom: But other than that, you can fly freely and openly here as an
[2431.63] Dom: amateur as long as you're more than 50 meters away from people
[2435.33] Dom: and 150 meters away from crowds.
[2437.83] Adam Juniper: We're allowed to fly FPV.
[2439.83] Adam Juniper: So long as we've got somebody spotting in the UK, that's
[2444.13] Adam Juniper: perfectly legal here.
[2445.13] Adam Juniper: Thanks to a bit of work by some enthusiasts.

[2471.53] Adam Juniper: wrong and making someone learn to fly a small plane before
[2477.43] Adam Juniper: they can fly a drone is crazy to them.
[2479.73] David O'Neal: Yeah, it's just really weird because it's like okay to be
[2482.23] David O'Neal: a pilot of a plane like that's I respect it.

[2486.73] David O'Neal: That's great, but then to sit and stand on a lawn somewhere and
[2492.73] David O'Neal: watch a tiny object in the sky.

[2495.53] David O'Neal: I mean that it requires like a good eyesight hand-eye coordination
[2499.13] David O'Neal: like all kinds of things has nothing to do with anything good

[2517.43] David O'Neal: it's it's more about them knowing about the different classes
[2520.43] David O'Neal: of airspace that we have and I'm like, okay, well, why don't
[2523.43] David O'Neal: you give me a class on the different classes of airspace
[2525.93] David O'Neal: and I'll learn that and give me a test and I'll prove that
[2528.23] David O'Neal: I know it and then allow me to pilot my little tiny dot like
[2533.43] Dom: I don't know if you have the same underlying political lobby,
[2536.13] Dom: but here in the UK a lot of the tightening of regulation is
[2541.13] Dom: often driven in partnership with the pilots associations
[2545.33] Dom: because naturally enough they're quite threatened about the future
[2548.93] Dom: of their career if more and more of their jobs can be automated
[2551.93] Dom: and done by unmanned vehicles, which is interesting.
[2555.63] Dom: I wonder how I wonder if that's again the same over in the
[2558.23] David O'Neal: States. Yeah, I mean, I've heard things which you know, people
[2561.63] David O'Neal: like to say things that they say a lot of different things,
[2563.93] David O'Neal: but I've heard a persistent story or rumor that the reason
[2568.33] David O'Neal: there's all these FPV laws is that ultimately planes can fly
[2572.73] David O'Neal: themselves, you know jet commercial jetliners can fly themselves
[2575.93] David O'Neal: in the pilots Union. The pilots really don't do anything unless
[2579.33] David O'Neal: there's an emergency and even in that case, they really can't
[2581.63] David O'Neal: do much at that point.
[2582.93] David O'Neal: So there could just be a command center somewhere in the states
[2586.53] David O'Neal: where there are people that fly FPV and all the commercial
[2589.63] David O'Neal: jetliners could you know, taxi take off and land and there
[2593.03] David O'Neal: wouldn't be need a need to pay these pilots a high amount of
[2595.83] David O'Neal: money because they're not doing anything anyway, and they just
[2597.93] David O'Neal: don't want that to get out so they keep all these these pilots
[2601.23] Adam Juniper: are not paid a high amount of money.
[2602.93] Adam Juniper: They're paid less than people who work in Walmart.
[2605.93] David O'Neal: Okay, well here they're paid a lot of money.
[2607.83] Adam Juniper: No, they're here. Seriously.

[2610.03] Adam Juniper: Okay. No, it was there's been there have been crashes in the
[2613.43] Adam Juniper: US because pilots have been working extra shifts because
[2616.23] Adam Juniper: they're so tight.
[2618.23] Adam Juniper: Do you remember Captain Sully who crashed into rescued a
[2622.13] Adam Juniper: plane basically had hit two geese?
[2626.23] Adam Juniper: Oh, the birds.
[2627.13] Adam Juniper: Yeah, yeah, he was asked to give a speech afterwards and he
[2632.63] Adam Juniper: gave a speech on the subject of how badly pilots treat because
[2635.63] Adam Juniper: people love the idea of being pilots.
[2637.63] Adam Juniper: People want to be pilots.
[2638.93] Adam Juniper: It's just the same as people want to work on TV.
[2641.03] Adam Juniper: A lot of those people are then treated quite badly because you
[2644.63] Adam Juniper: know, that's true.
[2647.33] David O'Neal: I did not know that that's awesome.
[2648.63] David O'Neal: I had no idea because every time I've ever talked, they've
[2651.03] David O'Neal: always said they made so much money and I was like, okay,
[2653.33] David O'Neal: well, they must make a bunch of money because every time
[2656.13] Dom: I've ever talked to somebody, they're like, I have now got
[2659.83] Dom: a fear that there's going to be a call center set up in the
[2662.63] Dom: dark darkest corner of Asia where there's just going to be
[2665.73] Dom: banks of people with fat sharks on flying commercial.
[2672.03] Adam Juniper: My image is a lot of people doing that somewhere in Nevada
[2674.83] Adam Juniper: or possibly just a computer.
[2678.13] Adam Juniper: Maybe a hacker and you know, if a hacker is coming from
[2681.53] Adam Juniper: somewhere, then my stereotypes put them in Russia or China.
[2684.73] Edd: The perception of money with pilots is an odd one.
[2687.43] Edd: Many years ago, I was looking to become a pilot and did all
[2693.83] Edd: the maths and just to get one type rating on a 737, a sort
[2697.93] Edd: of an entry rate of 56,000 pounds and that was eight or nine
[2700.93] Edd: years ago.
[2702.43] Dom: A friend of mine has just done the same thing.
[2703.93] Dom: It's about 80 or something now.
[2705.03] Edd: Yeah, it's crazy and looking at the, you know, keep an eye
[2709.53] Edd: on it and looking at your first basically co-pilot position.
[2713.03] Edd: It is in the low 20s.
[2714.73] Edd: It's in the low 20s for your first position and it's not
[2717.13] Edd: until you've got your captain stripes and you have 30s in
[2722.13] Edd: terms of dollars.
[2723.23] Edd: Yeah, so until you're really senior and you can fly a plane
[2727.13] Edd: for more than three minutes before having to hit the automatic
[2729.73] Edd: button, they start paying you sensible money and it's a lot
[2732.93] Edd: of these pilots are going in and sadly, it's sort of becoming
[2736.33] Edd: the realm of people who've got money behind them at a very
[2739.33] Edd: young age.
[2741.33] Edd: It's a real shame.

[2816.73] David O'Neal: step back and look at your drone put your face back in there
[2819.53] David O'Neal: so you can kind of like have a little bit of line of sight
[2822.03] David O'Neal: if you don't have a spotter and you're able to kind of you
[2825.13] David O'Neal: know get get the feel of Fat Shark goggles without actually
[2829.03] David O'Neal: putting them on your face.
[2830.13] David O'Neal: So that's another alternative that I use all the time.

[2972.74] David O'Neal: right. So we either buy some stock footage or in the cases
[2975.64] David O'Neal: where we had a budget we would hire a helicopter and what's
[2978.14] David O'Neal: cool is if you're moving at a horizontal plane when you're
[2981.54] David O'Neal: flying or anything at a horizontal plane really like if
[2984.14] David O'Neal: it's on a gimbal or if it's on a drone if you take that into
[2987.24] David O'Neal: After Effects right the Adobe After Effects program, you
[2989.94] David O'Neal: set up two different cameras and you make a left eye and a
[2992.74] David O'Neal: right eye and you just move the image over just a few pixels
[2996.44] David O'Neal: just a very few slight pixels and you muck that together
[2999.44] David O'Neal: and GoPro 3D you can make 3D footage out of your drone
[3003.84] David O'Neal: footage in a second and it looks awesome and you put the
[3006.84] David O'Neal: glasses on and oh my god, you've got you've got a 3D drone
[3010.44] David O'Neal: and it actually looks good but only move horizontal and that's
[3013.24] David O'Neal: it but it looks great.
