[84.72] Alex Edit: bit quieter and it's where I edit every day and so that's what's going on right now. I must say
[91.68] Jack: did you one question I've got did you set the alarm buzzer the one minute warning before you
[97.68] Jack: left work because I thought that was really funny. No what do you mean? I'm sure it was your burglar
[104.64] Jack: alarm. No you've got like a little alarm or you'll never leave. It was like one of your latest videos
[109.84] Alex Edit: where you set an alarm. No no no no the guys are still there. It's 3 p.m here so you know the guys
[116.8] Alex Edit: are going to be there for at least probably two and a half hours more but no I didn't do that.

[129.76] Alex Edit: I haven't worked a day you know and so when I'm there I'm just excited. I'm just you know there's

[143.2] Alex Edit: know family. I have a home that I have to come to and so and Carlo is the same way and so what I do
[152.64] Alex Edit: sometimes I just I say okay let's go and so I just set up the alarm and then the alarm starts
[159.12] Alex Edit: beeping and so we have a minute to gather our stuff and do what we got to do and leave because
[164.96] Alex Edit: there's always something to do and that will never end so it's kind of a running joke that we have at
[171.2] Jack: the office. Yeah it's really funny it's really sweet like you know I must return home you know
[176.96] Jack: and like you know return to my family you're so busy and it's really clear that you love what you
[183.28] Jack: do and we Frank was saying earlier about the discipline that you must have in order to edit
[192.72] Jack: like every day and he was on about some tips and that do you want to ask that question?
[199.2] Frank: Yeah so what I was going on about was it was kind of amazing looking at you know going through
[205.28] Frank: how often you post stuff on your channel and how much production value seems to be in there and
[210.8] Frank: compared to like flight tests you seem to be able to get the same sort of production value
[216.16] Frank: videos out and on the same sort of time schedule but with a full team behind them and like you
[224.72] Frank: must have some good tricks for keeping the time the overheads for editing stuff down to a reasonable
[231.6] Alex Edit: level. I have well first of all thank you so much I can't believe that you're comparing myself to
[238.72] Alex Edit: flight tests which those guys are absolutely incredible right I mean everybody knows but I
[246.4] Alex Edit: have no overhead it's you know I'm for my videos for sure it's a vlog so when you have a vlog and
[253.04] Alex Edit: I've only had the vlog since November there's really no overhead you know you're the camera
[259.68] Alex Edit: guy you're the you know and you're the editor so but I mean you've got all the little snippets of
[268.08] Frank: like in your I think your latest video with the where you're supping off at the petrol station
[272.96] Frank: you've got all the little shots of doing a little bits with the petrol cap and everything like that
[278.8] Frank: and there's kind of I think that I'm presuming the heads up display with your speedo on your
[286.56] Frank: windscreen I'm presuming that's after effects or something no no no that's just real no that's
[292.4] Alex Edit: for my car yeah really I had a car with that it was cool yeah yeah I thought I've had two
[299.28] Alex Edit: two cars with that uh in my lifetime and I love that I don't know it's I guess I'm a little like
[304.8] Adam Juniper: geek when it comes to that stuff that's what you should buy cars for the cool buttons
[311.36] Adam Juniper: I stopped the line at a Prius which will use its head up display not to tell you how fast you're
[315.44] Adam Juniper: going away I think but how much you're saving the environment which is just kind of big
[320.24] Alex Edit: and look not that I don't care about the environment but yeah I care about the environment but
[324.64] Alex Edit: hey I want the buttons man I want the little gadgets man I don't know I I'm I'm into that
[330.0] Alex Edit: stuff into the little dots and lights and things I always have I I once watched um a YouTube uh
[341.12] Jack: video once I can't believe I'm admitting this where the guy made sure that he ticked every
[346.96] Jack: added extra because he didn't want missing buttons on his dashboard and um this then leads me into
[356.96] Jack: shouting at Frank for ruining my life because uh you guys must know top gear and stuff like
[362.24] Jack: it's finished now unfortunately thankfully it'll be back on Amazon yeah I know and um Frank was like
[370.64] Adam Juniper: what's finished top gear yeah they stopped it what didn't you know when Jeremy Clarkson
[376.96] Adam Juniper: punched a guy in the face the BBC had to sack him they had to do it and that one was very
[383.44] Adam Juniper: happy obviously about it so that's what did it yeah that was it all sorts of other things
[389.12] Adam Juniper: that wasn't enough but if you actually punch someone you work with yeah who was a producer
[394.32] Frank: Frank yeah yeah so I have to watch out you know I have to make sure uh I have to make sure Jack
[401.68] Jack: gets his full steak dinner at the end of the day no I'm not a loud one because Tony's a vegan
[408.48] Jack: you know that goes out the window maybe I punch Tony and then Tony punches you I don't know I

[418.56] Jack: we'll crash a quad into each other we do that anyway um yeah but Frank's ruined my life because
[425.2] Jack: he introduced me to something called um reconstruct by is it reassembler yeah by James May oh my god
[435.28] Jack: it's so it it takes every button for me I uh if you can IP tunnel and go to BBC iPlayer
[444.16] Jack: and you can watch James but may uh put to get back together piece by piece a lawnmower made in
[453.6] Frank: Norfolk and it's I imagine like Jack's workbench with like you know all the times that I've seen
[461.44] Frank: him at all the events you know putting other people's stuff back together and carrying on
[465.84] Frank: working at an event and it's like it's that but with other things and James May but it's
[472.32] Frank: the resemblance is uncanny I think yeah my um my lawnmower has reached the point that I could cut
[477.52] Jack: it with a decent drone to be honest get something round um oh god oh yeah exactly that was on let's

[522.48] Jack: so what was your one I've got a question what was your involvement with the you know the first
[528.96] Jack: episode of rotor right the damn you know you were there and it seemed like you were covering it
[535.28] Jack: and filming the footage and you kind of like it was really good like I kind of miss you not being
[541.68] Jack: in the rotor right episodes here and there you know where you were just like he's the only
[546.72] Jack: Tommy's the only brave one brave enough to fly and stuff like that what what is your involvement
[553.44] Alex Edit: well I uh chat chat capper um called me uh one day and and said hey uh do you want to be part
[561.12] Alex Edit: of this and and I just immediately thought hey if if chat capper is involved in this I want to be
[566.88] Alex Edit: involved in it because it's gonna be great so um you know I I went out to LA with with with them
[575.52] Alex Edit: and uh we shot uh a couple of episodes and man it was just a blast you know I I haven't had that
[584.72] Alex Edit: much fun um I don't call it work I don't want to call it work because it's not work you know
[590.64] Alex Edit: um but I had a blast doing it and uh that that part the damn part was uh the same day that we
[599.92] Alex Edit: shot the uh guns versus drones episode yeah and we were coming back from the gun range and there
[606.64] Alex Edit: was a dam there was just a really cool place uh to fly and I think I don't know I think it was
[612.16] Alex Edit: Chad's idea uh uh jack capper to uh stop there and I I was just there filming and you know to
[619.36] Alex Edit: to to help film the uh the episodes and and uh you know to help edit and uh but then you know
[628.24] Alex Edit: we stopped there and I'm just filming right with my camera and then um Tommy said yeah
[636.08] Alex Edit: I'm gonna fly the dam and he was the only one who flew it and I just I couldn't believe he did that
[640.8] Alex Edit: it was insane and so that that was just like I had seen people flying like that on video but
[650.08] Alex Edit: I had never seen that in person because I'm not I'm not really it's only been lately that I've been
[655.52] Alex Edit: close to you know the the freestyle flying and the and the drone racing I've known about it but
[661.28] Alex Edit: I've never been close to it because I'm more on on on the on the other side I'm more kind of uh
[667.84] Alex Edit: you know I I run my business and I'm more of a um you know regular consumer drone type thing
[674.64] Alex Edit: so when I saw that in person I was just like I this is just crazy I mean I knew I had seen it
[681.28] Alex Edit: but I had never seen somebody doing that and so I was just so I was just so happy to be there
[687.44] Jack: it was it was an awesome awesome flight you know that you can just tell when he he flooshed the
[695.76] Jack: ripped straight bastard flipped inverted and then fell down the side of the the bank and it was
[703.52] Jack: just like whoa those guys are serious oh yeah yeah for for more than have the flight I thought
[710.56] Alex Edit: oh wow that's it man we we know yeah he lost it he lost it and then he would just come back
[715.68] Alex Edit: open like oh my god he's still here because it it was there was kind of a a ditch I would say
[722.96] Alex Edit: probably I don't want to exaggerate probably I don't know seven ten stories deep you know where
[729.44] Alex Edit: there was like a river at the bottom or something like that and he was flying under that I mean he
[734.48] Alex Edit: was there was no line of sight and um you know he just kept doing it and he he kept flying and it
[741.84] Alex Edit: was and then at the very end uh you know he comes in for landing and uh steel comes to grab it and he
[751.52] Jack: he drops it that was the funniest part yeah I know he's the reason he breaks a prop that was funny
[759.28] Jack: yeah yeah I wondered if it was like a strategic strategic thing where they you know like they
[766.0] Jack: made the first episode about that it was kind of like hmm I wonder why they chose that for their
[773.28] Alex Edit: first episode on like everything you could open I don't I don't know I I think that uh um with
[783.28] Alex Edit: with roto riot it's it's it's really about the lifestyle and and that's what I got when I was
[788.24] Alex Edit: hanging out um you know in in LA and all the conversations that I've had with Chad it's just
[793.84] Alex Edit: really about promoting the lifestyle and moving the the hobby forward and and uh that's really
[801.92] Alex Edit: what it's about that's just because that's really what this is you know it's just a bunch of friends
[806.72] Alex Edit: hanging out having a blast living the lifestyle flying on the weekends flying after work
[813.28] Jack: uh and that's what they do you know that's that's yeah I mean um it's so much fun because like
[819.12] Jack: it is it is really nice that you're covering that like edge you know riding the wave of like what
[824.48] Jack: we're on at the moment and it's it must be nice for you to be like involved you know in between
[832.32] Jack: on both of those sort of sides and um I was laughing because I went to I don't know whether
[838.4] Jack: you guys watch it or know about it like the the gadget show event and I remember I had a moment
[844.64] Jack: of like looking at someone's stand it's like an expo of like gadgets and that I mean there was one
[850.16] Jack: person there sending wind chimes I don't know what the hell that was about how how that was gadgets
[856.0] Jack: where was this um it was it was the NEC Birmingham and it's like the gadget show live oh did you go
[863.44] Jack: up to that yeah I went up to that yeah you're lucky boy um it weren't it wasn't that good
[869.52] Jack: because uh I don't know I just you know it was nice that it was good the company I went with
[874.16] Jack: and it was but I never saw I didn't see anything really that kind of done it for me I spent quite
[880.32] Jack: a lot of time playing the um the eye droner like involved with this um FBV simulator and there
[888.4] Jack: wasn't very many pilots there so I went I went there I'm like hey how you doing and so he kind
[892.8] Jack: of stuck me on that on the on that setup and people watching me just do lap after lap after lap
[900.64] Adam Juniper: and yeah the consumers just wondering because it's yeah it's a very publicy
[905.52] Jack: consumer-y show isn't it yeah yeah it was like you know like I was the only one there probably
[912.0] Jack: like um you know like hey I know can you stick this on rape for me please you know and then
[918.48] Jack: I think later on uh HPI guy went on there but you know he would have whupped my ass but um
[926.24] Jack: I remember having this moment of like you know looking at this stall and you released an episode
[932.88] Jack: where you went to some sort of expo and you were like drones are the hit thing right now you're
[938.48] Jack: you know like these guys got nothing to do with sending drones but they've got a drone here to
[943.36] Jack: like bring people in you know people are asking questions about oh yeah that that was at uh at uh
[949.92] Alex Edit: CES I I've been to a couple of them actually next Monday not this Monday this Monday I'm going to
[954.8] Alex Edit: an event in Orlando the next Monday I'm going to Vegas to uh do a big show it's it's the biggest
[961.76] Alex Edit: you know broadcasting equipment show called NAB I've been going to for a few years now but uh I
[967.92] Alex Edit: I've seen that in in several shows you know several conventions where you have like
[975.28] Alex Edit: a convention I don't know like a pharmaceutical convention not that I've ever that I've ever
[980.08] Alex Edit: been to a pharmaceutical convention but I'm just trying to draw an analogy here you go to a like a
[985.44] Alex Edit: pharmaceutical convention where a booth is selling pills and they have a bunch of drones there
[990.96] Alex Edit: just because it attracts people they have nothing to do with the product that they're selling
[996.4] Adam Juniper: that could be worse I mean traditionally you used to just have a hot girl
[1000.64] Alex Edit: which is a little although I think probably better um that that is still the case that is still the
[1007.52] Alex Edit: case but some of these booths have replaced the girls for drones it is really strange it is it is
[1016.32] Frank: nuts um I'm just there's a step forward to use the drones against the objectification of women
[1023.44] Frank: there we go a claim we can have I think but that that was that was it like there was people
[1029.12] Jack: you know they were using the FPV simulator but what what was getting people even more excited
[1034.8] Jack: and like queuing up was to have a go at the oculus rift rather than the fat shark goggles
[1040.4] Jack: so this was the sort of people that I was dealing with at the expo and I was just like
[1044.56] Jack: I am Alex edit all of a sudden like you know all I need to do is like vlog myself and I
[1050.4] Jack: I don't know I had a lot of empathy for you that day so you know I was just like whoa
[1056.64] Jack: so um yeah you you are a little bit you know a little bit of a naughty boy though you do seem
[1061.6] Jack: to fly your your quads pretty high and a little bit congested you know um over races over the
[1069.68] Jack: public that kind of thing yeah not too bad but you know um you can see that I've got a feeling
[1075.68] Jack: you might kind of like line up and sort of make it seem like that but you are sort of over an
[1082.08] Jack: open area to get the sort of shots you want but you're not as bad as is it Casey or whatever his
[1088.0] Alex Edit: name is you know the guy in New York City yeah Casey Casey Neistat the thing about Casey Neistat
[1095.76] Alex Edit: just this morning I watch his vlog I follow Casey because he's I think he's an amazing vlogger
[1102.0] Alex Edit: you know um the thing about him is that he doesn't care that much about the drone he cares
[1108.64] Alex Edit: more about the shot and when you shoot like that that's when you get gold you know that's
[1113.28] Alex Edit: when you get the absolute best shot in fact this morning I almost crushed my drone in the water I
[1120.4] Alex Edit: was filming a uh I was filming the sunrise and I always have you know I happened to have my
[1126.64] Alex Edit: phantom three with me not my four and so I said oh man I'm gonna fly close to the water got a
[1132.08] Alex Edit: little bit too close a little bit the camera got wet all right but but but I didn't lose it
[1141.12] Jack: but um yeah what's um yeah what has been the craziest shot you've got or like you know there
[1147.2] Jack: must have been a point where you first started using these things and you were like you know if
[1152.24] Jack: you are going to take risks and like get you know get the shot you want have you got any advice
[1157.2] Frank: for people that you know like don't do this there have been any times where you've kind of thought
[1162.24] Frank: huh maybe I shouldn't have done that looking backwards that's um only when I crash I think
[1172.08] Alex Edit: only when I crash but when I don't crash I don't think that way uh I advice on how to get
[1179.84] Alex Edit: just risk it I mean it's it's oh my god don't listen to him kids no no I mean it's no no don't
[1187.36] Alex Edit: listen to this I'm gonna tell you what goes on in my mind I don't think I have any shots that are
[1193.44] Alex Edit: cool when I go on youtube and I see these shots I'm like why can't I fly that way um but the
[1199.84] Alex Edit: shots that I'm that I can think of like wow that's cool it's just risky I mean and you know and I
[1207.36] Alex Edit: think that the best way is to have more than one drone obviously because when you have more than
[1211.68] Alex Edit: one drone you kind of think okay you know what if I lose this when it's okay and when I started
[1217.28] Alex Edit: flying uh RC that was in in 2007 drones the war drone I didn't even I don't even think that
[1226.0] Alex Edit: that word existed yet no at least not for what we do um you know and uh my first airplane it was a
[1235.12] Alex Edit: gas airplane with an always 46 in it love that plane it was an avistar uh I think by a hobby co
[1241.84] Alex Edit: no no I'm sorry no that was my second plane my first plane was a next star select
[1246.48] Alex Edit: and that thing had an automatic uh uh it was a visual stabilization system by I think it was
[1253.92] Alex Edit: vutaba that came up with it anyway I the way that I flew that it was the stupidest way you can possibly
[1261.04] Alex Edit: do it you just I just I got it online it was like a 400 dollar plane it was a gas plane
[1267.28] Alex Edit: I had a noise 46 on it I just went to an empty area didn't even go to a field and I just flew it
[1273.28] Alex Edit: I I think I spent like 10 minutes on the on the simulator it came with a simulator with a cheap
[1278.16] Alex Edit: simulator and then I went out there and said oh of course I can do this and uh I flew once right
[1284.56] Alex Edit: and landed I'm not really sure how I did it and then I I gassed it up I took off again I'm like oh
[1291.12] Alex Edit: man this is easy the second flight lasted about three seconds I destroyed it and the worst feeling
[1300.72] Alex Edit: I I I think you can relate it's the worst feeling in the world is when you crash my god it's you
[1308.56] Jae: had to spend months building a plane covering it making sure it would fly yeah oh my god that that
[1314.32] Alex Edit: I've never built a plane from scratch like that from from balsa this was balsa uh but you know
[1320.24] Alex Edit: this cost me after you know the remote and everything close to 500 bucks and it's not
[1326.08] Alex Edit: yeah it's the money but it's not even the money it's like I don't have my toy anymore so I cannot
[1330.16] Alex Edit: fly again but the feeling still today and I and I crash I don't crash a lot but I do crash because
[1336.32] Alex Edit: I'm I'd say my last crash was about a month ago I was trying to get a shot between power lines I
[1342.8] Alex Edit: was trying to fly my drone between power lines and I I hit one of the power lines uh and it was
[1349.52] Alex Edit: right after that I thought what am I thinking well who thinks of going between power lines
[1356.48] Alex Edit: but that was because I crashed if I didn't crash I'd have been like oh man that was awesome
[1360.32] Alex Edit: I'm the best pilot ever but anyway crashing is still oh my god that's such a bad feeling
[1367.44] Alex Edit: for hours probably for like a day or two you feel at least I do I feel down and then you don't take
[1373.68] Alex Edit: risk for like a week and then you forget about it and then you start taking risk again because I
[1378.64] Alex Edit: don't you know I don't fly racers I don't you know my my flights are more kind of like av you know
[1384.88] Alex Edit: aerial photography and videography type so you know a lot of racers I think they see that in
[1390.88] Alex Edit: there they're like oh yeah that's crap which I can understand that we're not all animals here
[1396.72] Jack: you know we're not all you know just like you know we're not going fast that's right Jack when
[1402.08] Adam Juniper: I see some things my monocle nearly falls out of my face yeah that's it but uh yeah you know like
[1408.8] Jack: we you know we can still appreciate it you know it's definitely you know you are you are part of
[1415.12] Jack: you know the hobby like all the industry you know and you know it's like cars though isn't it some
[1420.88] Jae: cars do different things better and some cars don't so yeah there's always going to be a fast
[1426.0] Jae: like multi-faceted aspect of drones and all the other technology around this so I don't know I
[1432.0] Jae: quite like the the more uh videographic uh platforms sometimes but what you get after the
[1438.0] Jae: flight whereas racers are fun for the flight you know what I mean yeah definitely you know I mean
[1444.8] Jack: I I'm still you know like my my sort of like little DIY camera platforms still on the the bit
[1452.32] Jack: of the back burner but I do want to I am looking forward to you know going out with Jay and tying
[1457.68] Jack: it to a fishing rod and you know with nico and being like oh my to be clear tying jay to a fishing
[1464.4] Jack: rod no the drone the drone is not we're not that kinky here at ledge drone now no but I think we're
[1471.76] Jae: quite spoiled these days for having things that you can easily attach the cameras to I mean talking
[1476.16] Jae: of the risk earlier Alex I started flying myself in about 2007 and I wanted to get aerial video
[1481.84] Jae: and things but I had nothing like a GoPro to put on it so I had my mobile phone that I just attached
[1487.6] Jae: rubber bands and built this little platform and I'd throw that plane around in the sky with the risk
[1491.76] Jae: was my mobile phone it's the only phone I had but I got some footage out of it I was bitten so I
[1496.4] Jae: think risk is good for trying to get the different shots or try something a bit different um definitely
[1503.44] Adam Juniper: on the phone thing there's a thing on youtube of someone using an inspire to lift a Nokia 3210
[1509.68] Adam Juniper: up 900 feet before dropping it onto a car park I've seen that indestructible as people say
[1517.6] Alex Edit: oh so that that was that earthquake that day
[1522.56] Adam Juniper: is that Nokia yeah they were it wasn't as unbreakable as that yeah it still worked but
[1530.08] Adam Juniper: the screen was half destroyed so if something you could place make at the top half of the screen
[1534.96] Alex Edit: yeah that that was that phone is is uh is amazing in you know my iPhone if I look at it too for too
[1541.52] Alex Edit: long it breaks yeah yeah you shouldn't look at them hard or yeah yeah or in the sun or near near
[1548.72] Adam Juniper: water yeah very definitely from holiday experience in water that's right how oh no you're supposed
[1557.68] Jack: to be a responsible father now what is wrong with it that's only been like 10 days
[1566.72] Alex Edit: somebody just had a baby 10 days ago yeah yeah oh my god congrats man sorry that's right sorry

[1595.68] Jack: building and like being creative so only way he'll learn yeah you've got me sensibly teaching him or

[1657.12] Jae: even better I mean yeah but the thing was it was to do with planes and yeah shortly after I migrated
[1665.04] Jae: from my big aerial platform that was just an electric I've always been electric I built a
[1669.28] Jae: small laser cut model at a bolster and it didn't fly quite right but it flew there was a video of
[1674.88] Jae: a fire on youtube but anyway I went out for a flight another day it was a nice sunny day and
[1679.92] Jae: it still didn't feel completely right in the sky and I was coming into land so I it didn't land
[1686.4] Jae: where I wanted it to and it kept on floating on and it landed in these brambles so I walked over
[1692.72] Jae: and thought oh shit you know I can't get this out of the brambles it's a bit too far in
[1697.36] Jae: so I took a step in I was wearing shorts it was the summer day how is it I know it's
[1701.12] Jae: unbelievable in this country but it does happen I took one step in and sank a little bit and I
[1707.84] Jae: still couldn't reach plane and I'd already tried branches and all sorts of things but no I had to
[1712.0] Jae: just I thought you know a few scratches on my leg that's nothing I'll get my plane back
[1715.92] Jae: in one piece I took another step and I sank a little bit further and it was still out of reach
[1722.48] Jae: so I took one third step and I sank a fair bit into these brambles and the next thing I noticed
[1728.64] Jae: was a sharp pain on my knee and I looked down there's a wasp and I realized what I was doing
[1735.68] Jae: is I started running out as I'm running away there's this one wasp I'm trying to brush off
[1740.96] Jae: I spot another one on the same leg and then another wasp on the other leg and I just ran
[1745.84] Jae: and thankfully I only got three stings not bad for the first time ever have you ever put your
[1752.8] Jae: feet into a wasp snap well you know it was just at the time my my plane's there I wanted to get it
[1758.96] Jae: back as it turns out I drove home got a hoe from home went back hooked it out and ragged it to
[1764.4] Jae: pieces but I got all the electronics built another one and she's still alive she's crashed a bit but
[1768.88] Jae: she's repaired and still flies so so what so it was worth it for a minute uh well it was an
[1775.12] Jack: experience should we say yeah for a minute for a minute then when you went I drove home and got a
[1781.2] Jack: hoe I was like whoa Jay get home and it got it out why don't you finish with me go get that plane
[1792.0] Jae: oh my word I might be on YouTube because actually at the time the same camera that was flying in the
[1799.44] Jae: air on my other plane I had strapped to my head to try and film my uh my flight so I have the

[1818.48] Jae: and I was looking as I was running away thinking I can't see me doing these like

[1891.6] Adam Juniper: a lot of Europe and I've been around an awful lot of North America but if you buy what's it like
[1898.32] Alex Edit: it you know I I have to say I had a lot of misconceptions and that's just for my you know
[1905.52] Alex Edit: my ignorance you know I never looked at Dubai I knew about it I knew what it was but I knew where
[1912.08] Alex Edit: it is but I never really I was never interested and when I got there it's very western you know
[1919.76] Alex Edit: it's uh just like being in Miami really at least on you know on its face the way that it looks
[1927.52] Alex Edit: the way that it looked like to me because I I got I landed on a Thursday and I was already
[1932.64] Alex Edit: on a plane back on a Saturday so the little that I saw I guess I guess slightly fewer Cuban crime
[1937.68] Adam Juniper: syndicates than Miami but yeah right right but I was going to ask as well I really like the fact
[1944.24] Adam Juniper: that in your video you went and looked at the detail of how the uh the track is built and you
[1948.64] Adam Juniper: can see the you know the bits that are painted and the bits that aren't quite because I think
[1953.2] Adam Juniper: we just saw you know and all the glossy footage that other people did you just looked at it and
[1957.76] Adam Juniper: thought well that's amazing and a bit weird but you went right in for the detail I thought that
[1961.68] Alex Edit: was cool yeah and that was um that's the second day the first day I I went up when I got there
[1970.48] Alex Edit: the very first thing I did I went right to the track because I wanted to see it up close
[1974.56] Alex Edit: and I didn't film it um and I almost got kicked out because I wasn't supposed to be there
[1979.92] Alex Edit: but you know I I have a tendency to not ask just kind of do it and then figure it out and so that's
[1987.36] Alex Edit: kind of what I did I just went and checked it out and man it was incredible the kind of the work
[1995.2] Alex Edit: that they put into that track into that whole event uh the event wasn't perfect I'm sure you've
[2001.2] Alex Edit: heard yeah uh but I think like everything else um look it's at first uh nobody had ever done that
[2010.24] Alex Edit: before um and I I think that what happened was uh they put all of their concentration on the
[2019.04] Alex Edit: spectators on what it was going to look like to to the outside viewer um and very little on or at
[2026.32] Alex Edit: least didn't do it right for the pilot and that's not me saying it that's the pilots that I talked to
[2035.28] Adam Juniper: it's and it's not just them in fairness it happens a lot doesn't it with events I think that
[2039.52] Adam Juniper: people are much more concerned about the look of it um like the NEC thing um just a much smaller
[2046.16] Adam Juniper: scale we had an exhibition in the UK for drones and no one seemed to have even bothered to test
[2051.28] Jack: where radios worked indoors or not it was it was it was pretty bad as well like as um some someone's
[2058.48] Jack: stand wasn't even finished and it was a bit sort of as Jay would say in his Australian thing a bit
[2067.2] Jack: how's it going you know it was and there was there there wasn't very good discipline on um
[2075.6] Jack: exhibitors wanted to show their their videos so they were like blasting you know um 5.8 everywhere
[2082.8] Jack: so people were trying to race and then someone would be like yeah would you like to have a look
[2086.48] Jack: at this drone you know so we could send it and all of a sudden you'll be looking at someone's crotch
[2091.36] Jack: from a drone sat on the table and they're plugging in being like yeah look at that HD display of your
[2099.44] Jack: HD knob it was just like you know and as a spectator you're just like watching this
[2106.16] Jack: pilot you're like oh yeah this is awesome you know they're flying and static and you're
[2111.12] Jack: really struggling to see and the next thing you just get a nice crystal clear someone's knob
[2119.84] Jack: so um it was it was pretty painful but uh I had fun you know there was you know like obviously
[2125.68] Jack: when all your friends are there it's really good like you know and you know Adam's making you laugh
[2131.04] Jack: and you know like we had a good show yeah awesome it wasn't the flying but yeah that was it like
[2138.24] Jack: you know it's nice to kind of like hang out and stuff and um yeah I think you know with the Dubai
[2145.6] Jack: they were I heard that they were changing I'm trying not to throw anyone under the bus I hear
[2150.08] Jack: that like they were changing the rules like every other day um you know a lot of the pilots were
[2156.32] Jack: arguing with them and there was that really sort of strange thing where like the um the guys would
[2162.96] Jack: be like flying around the track and then the the Dubai team would then take off fly and they were
[2169.04] Jack: like cheering and like hey they won and a lot of guys like you could just see the the guys who'd
[2175.04] Jack: been doing eight laps already were like you know what the hell and uh there was a lot of um
[2181.36] Jack: weird sort of like favoritism towards like the home team and you know some controversial kind
[2187.6] Jack: of things so I don't know whether you noticed any of that no I don't I don't know the uh specifics
[2193.52] Alex Edit: because I was you know I wasn't participating in the event I just went to watch and you know to
[2198.16] Alex Edit: hang out with the people that I know um but I I did see some of that I I I mean there were a lot
[2205.84] Alex Edit: of people pissed off you know uh for many many different reasons um I guess that's one of them
[2213.52] Alex Edit: I I didn't hear that that particular reason but uh I mean some of the rules I I do remember
[2221.28] Alex Edit: what I think was the day the first day that I went there which was Friday I remember um
[2227.84] Alex Edit: someone saying oh wait now there's an you know an HD box that we have to put on the drone
[2233.84] Alex Edit: and I think it was the first time that they had heard about it and the HD box was uh
[2239.76] Alex Edit: I think 260 grams or something like that and they were freaking out and I was just watching from
[2244.96] Alex Edit: a distance you know from a close distance I didn't really know all the details so I don't
[2249.04] Alex Edit: I can't comment because I don't have all the information but that's some of what I saw
[2253.36] Jack: yeah do it Jay do it yeah um sorry Jay Jay uh Jay distracted me a little bit yeah um how did he
[2262.48] Jack: distract you um he put he's he's found the sound recording of him getting stung by wasps oh he's
[2268.96] Adam Juniper: like when you said do it Jay do it it was really difficult very ambiguous for the audio yeah yeah

[2291.52] Jack: it a bit later on okay do you remember the um the HD cam I know that some people were informed of
[2301.2] Jack: that and other people weren't apparently that kind of like joined last minute to kind of fill in
[2306.56] Jack: for extra teams but I heard that um what what they were doing was um the if you shut down
[2314.64] Jack: the HD cams um they would take like half an hour to like reboot up or something they'd have to
[2320.8] Jack: cool down and then start up again so when you'd come in to change your battery you used to you
[2326.32] Jack: had to plug it plug it in plug a external power source into the camera that was connected to
[2333.92] Jack: to the um you know um in line in house electricity and then keep the camera running
[2341.84] Jack: then unplug your quad then plug a new battery into your quad then remove the electricity um
[2349.36] Jack: the the socket the the plug from the wall and the thing is with that is you supply the camera with
[2355.68] Jack: um electricity via you know the cable in the wall and then it would start to try and charge up
[2362.72] Jack: your lipo battery and so that was scary and as you know it rained the first day so apparently
[2369.84] Jack: it was all sparking and smoke coming out because everything got covered in water and they were one
[2375.12] Jack: of the things that got damaged so after a while of arguing they had to then agree with them that
[2380.56] Jack: they were allowed to have like this extra battery with an xt60 connector so that they could then
[2386.08] Jack: keep the camera up and running um so i've i've heard all kinds of like shambles things like that
[2394.24] Jack: and um most hd cameras didn't even work in the end did they and they were just like they they
[2401.28] Alex Edit: they really didn't um you know especially at night uh at night it was you couldn't see that
[2408.32] Alex Edit: there was a huge screen probably i don't know like 20 feet i have no idea but i'm just gonna say 20
[2414.72] Alex Edit: feet it was something like that and so uh the idea was to project the image from the drone
[2421.6] Alex Edit: onto that screen you couldn't see anything it was just it was always black because you know
[2426.88] Alex Edit: the camera that the hd box had i guess you know it's hd and if it's it's it was i'm gonna assume
[2433.6] Alex Edit: it was probably like gopro quality and gopro you know as you know does not do well at night um
[2439.84] Adam Juniper: um so it didn't pick up any of the lights on the uh the course because that was that was all lit up
[2446.0] Alex Edit: at night wasn't it not that well not that well it was it wasn't you know it wasn't that part did
[2452.48] Alex Edit: not work that well uh but then on the on on saturday they actually uh i i remember that morning um
[2460.0] Alex Edit: anthony from from from immersion was rereading all the uh all the pilot stations and so they made
[2466.4] Alex Edit: analog and then at night the screen was showing the analog signal absolutely beautiful you could
[2472.64] Jack: see it clear yeah that was the very last day oh yeah because um i remember oh yeah was that
[2480.96] Adam Juniper: the same analog as the they were flying yeah yeah yeah yeah good because it otherwise you know it
[2486.32] Jack: seems unfair to use all the extra bandwidth uh you know with the with the analog it was picking
[2493.28] Jack: that up like really well because of um you know like the the wide dynamic range and stuff but like
[2499.52] Jack: the the normal shots that you saw with all the track all lit up i think that was like
[2505.92] Jack: wired um you know the zip line kind of cameras or failing that um a quad uh on you know gps mode
[2514.96] Jack: with like a slower shutter speed i don't i don't know what they are yeah to get those i know the
[2520.32] Jack: shots you're on about because the track was like all dynamically lit like you know i had like
[2524.8] Jack: moving spotlights and all kinds of things yeah and i remember yeah i have a i have a shot where
[2529.6] Alex Edit: i i flew probably i think it was like 600 or 900 feet above the uh the track yeah and you could
[2538.4] Alex Edit: you could see i mean when i looked i was looking at my screen because i i walked really far away
[2544.24] Alex Edit: i'd say probably like a kilometer away from the track to be able to fly that because
[2548.48] Alex Edit: um near an airport that's all i want to say about that they they were saying that you know
[2553.6] Alex Edit: you weren't supposed to fly but i thought man if i'm here i have to fly yeah um so i
[2559.68] Alex Edit: i flew it really far and the lights on the ground were hitting the camera on on on my drone and it
[2567.6] Alex Edit: was like if the drone was frightened next to it yeah it was amazing it looked amazing from the air
[2574.32] Jack: yeah because you know hats off to the pilots because there was you know like some of those
[2579.36] Jack: lights must have hit the quads and like dazzled and i think that a good few you know that might
[2585.12] Jack: have taken a good few pilots down you know um just you know the the whole lighting effect it
[2590.72] Jack: was a little bit sort of mental um yeah what what other things how did you get started in in
[2599.89] Jack: you know with with quads like when did you first see one and when well it was i'll say it was in
[2607.25] Alex Edit: 2007 and it wasn't quads back then because quads did not exist back then that was not i don't even
[2614.05] Alex Edit: think that was an idea yet uh but in 2007 i got uh an actual airplane that i destroyed within
[2620.37] Alex Edit: like two days and then i got another one and then i got another one and so i i work in in in
[2626.37] Alex Edit: broadcasting that's my career as a producer here in south florida so within a week i'm immediately
[2632.45] Alex Edit: thinking man i gotta put a camera on this i have to put a camera on this because i want to see
[2637.01] Alex Edit: what my airplane is seeing so i turned to the internet turns out that there was an underground
[2644.93] Alex Edit: group of people online that was doing that i mean at the time artsy groups didn't even have an fpv
[2651.01] Alex Edit: uh uh thread um fpv lab didn't exist there was really it was i think um i forgot the name of
[2659.81] Alex Edit: the website but there was a website where people just kind of gathered and and you know we exchanged
[2665.25] Alex Edit: ideas and uh i got a dvr camera from ebay i got i think my first transmitter i want to say was a
[2674.45] Alex Edit: low-made transmitter and so you know you kind of had to hack it all together put it together patch
[2680.21] Alex Edit: it together put it on your drone my first um uh airplane with a camera was a 3d airplane it was
[2687.97] Alex Edit: uh called uh a frenzy and so that had an os 90 on it and so i took that engine out i put an always
[2697.33] Alex Edit: 60 on it because it's it's a lot slower but it consumes a lot less gas so i was getting
[2702.85] Alex Edit: an hour and 10 minutes on this thing um and i put a camera on it and i was flying on 72 right
[2711.25] Alex Edit: and on i would just just i had no idea how high or how far i was i was just climbing really high
[2718.13] Alex Edit: and going really far then i would come back look at the video uh and i would point the camera down
[2724.21] Alex Edit: to see where i was in the street and to measure the distance i would um go on google earth and
[2730.85] Alex Edit: measure it with the ruler i remember the first time that i did a mile i was like holy crap that
[2735.57] Alex Edit: was a mile but um but anyway i uh then quad and i was still doing you know i was still working
[2746.13] Alex Edit: at the tv station doing you know my my broadcasting and stuff um then quads came about
[2754.21] Alex Edit: i don't remember what year i don't know 2010 it's about 2010 yeah yeah 2010 and um you know i
[2761.57] Alex Edit: remember immediately getting a quad i think was with a multi-weave if i'm if i remember correctly
[2768.37] Alex Edit: i destroyed that it was such a pain in the ass to put together and i i just destroyed it just
[2774.77] Alex Edit: completely destroyed it so i uh but anyway i just kept kept getting more and then my garage i
[2780.61] Alex Edit: couldn't i could barely walk in it because any plane any camera any transmitter i would see i
[2785.49] Alex Edit: would buy just to see what was better and uh and then in when was it 2014 it was actually early
[2797.57] Alex Edit: late 2013 but actually made the move in 2014 i uh i just decided to quit i had no idea what i was
[2805.25] Alex Edit: going to do uh for money but i just decided to quit and because i i had opened urban drones in
[2812.29] Alex Edit: late 2011 and that was just from frustration it was very hard to find good transmitters good
[2818.93] Alex Edit: equipment and to get them fast so i opened my own website to sell to friends you know and then
[2825.49] Alex Edit: turned out okay the first year um and then the second year and then i had an accident where
[2832.93] Alex Edit: a lipo caught fire and destroyed all my my rnd i had a long-range system that i built with a friend
[2842.37] Alex Edit: i had an led board that i built with a friend i had a tracking system an antenna tracking system
[2847.01] Alex Edit: that i built with a friend and we were building we had an osd they called it the urban drones
[2853.25] Alex Edit: osd uh but all that rnd got burnt on a lipo fire and i almost burned my whole house down
[2861.17] Alex Edit: and so when that happened that's when i thought oh man you know what i don't think i'm putting
[2866.53] Alex Edit: enough time on this so i just quit my job and put all my time into it and um i want to discourage
[2873.97] Alex Edit: most people brave response for a fire you know when when i i think that when when you're doing
[2882.37] Alex Edit: something that you love when things get hard i i personally don't think that you should quit
[2887.89] Alex Edit: that's when you when things get hard that's when you should say okay here it comes let's kick your
