Want to know how to give kids a chance with drones? Jae has the experience!
Powering On gets announced as the brand new internet radio channel around creativity, a new sister channel to thethursdaynightshow.com that we have started out on.

[0.08] (Editor): elementary recovered. This episode is sponsored by Fossil Stuff for
[6.16] (Editor): indestructible frames and all your racing suppliers. Good evening and welcome
[10.76] Frank: to Let's Drone Out. Who have we got tonight? We have got Jack. Hello. We have
[17.04] Frank: got Jay. G'day. We've got Ed. G'day. We've got Adam. Hello I'm Frank or producer Frank, Andrew
[26.76] Frank: whatever. It all works. So today our big focus is going to be on Jay's recent
[35.76] Frank: experience. I've been running a couple of events I believe or at least part of a
[40.24] Frank: couple of events based around using drones to bring interesting STEM skills
[47.36] Jae: to kids. You could say that yeah. There's been a few events that I've done but do you
[54.2] Jae: want to talk about the events now or do you want to jump straight into it? Yeah I
[59.48] Frank: think. The last one that I've heard about was bed pod. Was that right? Yeah
[67.44] Jae: this area of the country Bedford has occasionally pop-up shops and they
[71.16] Jae: thought for British Science Week they'd get different science acts in. So there's
[76.52] Jae: the bloodhound gang that joined into this science week. There's basically one
[80.28] Jae: day and the fastest rocket car or something they were famous for. But I was
[85.64] Jae: approached a little while ago just saying if there's any geeky techy people
[88.88] Jae: out and so I responded doing my bit of community service and basically then
[94.48] Frank: tailored what was typically. That's voluntary community service right? Yeah yeah. But also to be clear that's
[102.12] Frank: bloodhound SST and not the bloodhound gang that might be known for other reasons. It's the rocket
[108.96] Jae: car group. I haven't really followed them. I think they're quite local to here. That's
[112.4] Jae: what I got involved. But there was a collection of different things done,
[114.84] Jae: different science things and what was going to be programming in Scratch on a
[118.76] Jae: Raspberry Pi, which is possible. I just thought well I also fly drones
[123.44] Jae: commercially. So we tailored something around that and the lead-up to the
[127.24] Jae: event where it was going to be a series of workshops and presentations
[131.52] Jae: throughout the day and the kids get to fly it. The original ideas it conceived
[135.56] Jae: that they'd fly through a course because there's some competition element. Later
[141.84] Jae: turned into just flying a hubsend but yeah with safety precautions. And on the
[147.12] Jae: day I think Jax is in the chat room. He did help out in a massive way on the day
[151.2] Jae: from running it and getting safety sorted. But no it was an inspiring
[158.32] Jae: thing to be able to share this with a different audience and these kids
[161.6] Jae: signed up for something that was science related and potentially going to
[165.76] Jae: fly a drone. And a lot of them did. So I'm hoping some you know take it further
[170.72] Jae: and maybe give Luke Bennis to some competition in the coming years.
[175.32] Frank: So how did the whole event work? Was it like just one long day of this
[180.8] Frank: workshop of kids doing their own things or were they doing other things as well?
[186.44] Jae: Well on the day there was all sorts of boards. I mean I didn't get any break
[190.88] Jae: or Jack and I didn't get any break from the moment we started about 8 o'clock in
[194.36] Jae: the morning until we finished at 5.30 non-stop. And the event was quite popular
[199.8] Jae: the whole event that was running. But people were just walking in halfway
[203.4] Jae: through the sessions and wanting to join in and at one point the room was full of
[207.32] Jae: people. But because we were hosting like we basically gave a talk about how they
[210.84] Jae: work and just how you know talked about them and the safety and what they can be
[214.76] Jae: used for. We'd show some videos to inspire them like Luke Bennis to racing
[219.84] Jae: or some freestyle from his kids. And then just let them have a go because there's
[225.8] Jae: no way you can actually otherwise introduce it to kids. They need to have a
[229.56] Jae: go. But what we found on the day was the adults wanted to have to go just as much as kids.
[233.84] Jae: And I think they had to sign them up. Just have a go with the dogs.
[238.68] Frank: I've noticed that flying in the fields just with you know with our quads going.
[245.72] Frank: When there's like a dad and his kids coming around he goes so my kids who are
[252.2] Frank: interested how much of these how do you how do you get into them? It's always for
[257.32] Frank: the kids but I suspect it's probably not just for the kids. But you found that as
[262.4] Jae: well on these events. Well actually yeah I mean we used the tried and tested
[267.64] Jae: method of hub sounds and I said you know if we get a couple of hub sounds
[271.16] Jae: thinking we're gonna have just a handful we could essentially get kids
[276.12] Jae: to fly them and they can walk away saying they've had a go. Because that was
[279.2] Jae: the ultimate thing. Did they have something to take away even if it was
[282.08] Jae: just an experience. But at the end after the kids were flying in the parents that
[287.64] Jae: the amount of sales that would be made at that point is like well this is a
[291.08] Jae: business venture. I should have been selling these things because people do
[294.08] Jae: want to get a hub sound. The hub sounds fly they crash they still fly they crash
[298.4] Jae: they still fly and that is a for a parent to see it's like well I don't
[303.92] Jae: mind spending some money to get my kid in there and you know. It certainly was
[309.16] Adam Juniper: the one I always recommend to people who are like oh my kids have seen this. Yeah
[313.36] Jae: yeah. Before some of them started we had some stories about people losing them
[318.92] Jae: trees and power lines like an uncle or a friend of a friend. Yeah it was you wasn't it.
[325.56] Jae: But yeah the hub sounds that we were lucky enough we were sponsored by
[329.84] Jae: Harper Trust that works there and we've got quite a few hub sounds so even though
[335.44] Jae: some did finally get cut out out of action we still had some others to keep
[341.08] Edd: the day going. How did the event come about? What was the motivation for it and
[347.6] Edd: did someone approach you or did you come up with the idea and approach you? A long time
[351.28] Jae: ago there was an outstanding teacher I used to do a lot of work with and she
[355.4] Jae: actually asked me to go into a school to do an aerial photography for a day and
[358.6] Jae: she she is a smart teacher dragged me into the classroom to answer questions
[362.92] Jae: to the kids and that went down a storm. That was a buzz and I thought why
[367.28] Jae: should you know that was that was pretty good that you can at least present
[370.16] Jae: information to these younger people. We actually set an age limit on the course
[374.56] Jae: itself for at least ten because that's when they start to at least understand
[378.4] Jae: the technology and how it would work but all sorts of ages turning up but it
[384.2] Jae: was through the kids actually realizing that there's no other way to get into
[388.2] Jae: these things other than eventually convincing the parents to buy one who
[391.6] Jae: have probably been influenced by media to a degree or the expense. It was a good
[398.08] Jae: way to at least provide as an option and it kind of evolved from the original one
[402.52] Jae: where it was a question-and-answer and that's going back about two years so it
[408.8] Jae: was not so much just a question-and-answer and how could the you know
[412.36] Jae: how could people have a go themselves in a contained and safe environment and so
[417.0] Jae: what evolved from the start is to just perhaps have some people kids racing
[421.4] Jae: through a circuit turned into how do we call it off a whole area I'm so it's
[427.08] Jae: safe to do this with no people you know with their skill. How much health and
[432.04] Adam Juniper: safety peg work and the like did you have to do? The council had a lot so
[435.92] Jae: there was a lot of run-up to do this and the final solution worked a treat
[440.8] Jae: basically having netting up you have to have netting because that's yeah as it's
[445.28] Jae: the only way to do it but netting is incredibly effective. It does it does
[450.48] Adam Juniper: I had to do an event with drumcadults which I guess is similar to Jurgen and that involved a lot of health and
[458.32] Adam Juniper: safety and netting and forms to be filled in. Well that in addition to
[464.88] Jae: sometimes giving people a simulator because we had a couple of simulators
[470.32] Jae: set up around the room so we had FPV free rider we had a competition running
[474.48] Jae: on the screen where if they who did the best on liftoff around a track it was
[479.56] Jae: yeah it was an interesting sort of how they could at least have a different
[484.72] Jae: goes in different areas like fly one for real simulator race or you know.
[492.4] Edd: Was it a fairly inclusive day? Was all the kids managed to get a go? Yeah I mean there's
[499.96] Jae: essentially about a 20 minute window to fly so let's face it when you're flying
[504.4] Jae: a couple of minutes seems like a long time anyway so no one ever really want
[507.72] Jae: to have not have a go the only troubles we had was in the middle of the day when
[511.68] Jae: people were just walking into the room because there's nobody saying wait a
[516.44] Jae: minute this is only a pre-booking thing you have to book onto it. That's when it's
[522.04] Jae: getting harder to manage and I think the people realized that they're pushing in
[525.96] Jae: and so eventually it calmed down again and people with them walked off. So I think
[530.2] Adam Juniper: when you've got people who are pushing in some of them realize they're pushing in
[532.92] Adam Juniper: and they back off some of them realize they're pushing in but they're the kind
[536.44] Adam Juniper: of people who are going to take it you know they're going to push anyway. Game theory
[539.88] Jae: yeah you can't fault either one. What way did you choose? Have you got any plans to
[547.48] Jae: repeat the exercise? Yeah I mean around this area there's someone that's quite
[553.08] Jae: proactive they ran a thing called a fun palace last year which is a science
[557.08] Jae: orientated thing but rather than just the STEM the SCEM it's more around the
[562.12] Jae: STEAM idea that introduces art into it. Even on the DJI website under their
[569.24] Jae: education bit they say it's an art in itself even from the creative aspect of
[575.64] Jae: what you can use these for. But how do you teach a whole discipline of flying and
[581.72] Jae: Arduino and everything in a small space of time? It's not necessarily easy but you can
[586.68] Jae: at least inspire them in a way to want to find out more. Perhaps you could... So was that something
[593.4] Frank: that you covered a bit then with about sort of the the electronic side of things and what goes
[599.08] Frank: into it like as a little taster of what people can maybe get into? Most people and kids definitely
[607.8] Jae: kids have heard of a Raspberry Pi so I kind of introduced that you can even get a board that
[612.36] Jae: plugs onto a Raspberry Pi to make that Raspberry Pi do everything you want and said about some
[617.16] Jae: of the electronics but didn't go into detail and I think that's how they relate. They see some
[621.56] Jae: things and relate oh I know a Raspberry Pi I even know someone who has a Raspberry Pi you know.
[626.92] Jae: So the one thing I did try and stress was safety because let's face it if you you know they aren't
[635.0] Jae: supposed to fly just anywhere and things and the safety of these things at least we got across at
[639.64] Adam Juniper: some point in the excitement. We are all such killjoys when we're explaining stuff. I know but
[645.64] Frank: there were... I don't think it's necessarily a killjoy thing of just saying at some point you
[652.6] Frank: will crash but that's not the safety thing is if you're managing expectations you always have to
[658.04] Adam Juniper: go and tell them all the rules because you know you feel responsible for the hobby and it's the
[662.84] Adam Juniper: right thing to do but a lot of the kids or a lot of the parents will be like you mean I can't do it
[667.88] Jae: in my garden. Okay if you're checking out the canvas down at the Thursday night show.com
[676.44] Jae: page this is a series of photos where an adult got involved and she starts flying yeah innocently
[684.76] Jae: enough but the reason you do need the safety is because these things can hurt if they fly
[691.96] Adam Juniper: straight towards you. I'm super sad here because I'm doing this on an iPad and I don't have the
[696.2] Jae: canvas. Well the last picture now and if you can see that the shock of everyone's face is apart
[702.28] Jae: from the person flying as it's caught in the net just inches away well and not far from their heads
[709.08] Jae: yeah yeah it was a fun day and I'd recommend it there's another thing in October and it's doable
[715.96] Jae: as a format to introduce people to what is current technology and what is current even
[720.52] Jae: top of your conversation uh in the world yeah that actually looks like some really good netting
[726.28] Frank: you've got in there and that it looks you know it's worked well in the photographs does that yeah
[731.48] Frank: do you have any details on that I'm just looking at that and that looks really interesting it was
[734.68] Jae: garden peanuts because it's cheap and plentiful so how did um was it something you could use again
[741.88] Adam Juniper: or buy it when you took it down was it all chaotic uh no no I mean you could use it again
[746.84] Jae: often it's hard you the chaos is trying to fish them out of some of the you know when they wedged
[751.8] Frank: in there looked around because when the reason I was taking uh particularly taking an interest
[758.6] Frank: in that is that on Saturday I was at the Maker Faire UK in Newcastle and there was you know
[766.6] Frank: there's obviously going to be some droning and there was there a little box net um there that was
[774.44] Frank: for micro drone 3.0 and they were doing little battles in there of just flying them at each
[780.28] Frank: other and whoever was still flying after two minutes or something was uh you know won the
[787.0] Frank: round or whatever and it was you know very fairly superficial but it was quite fun to watch especially
[793.88] Frank: if you you know you weren't you know particularly not you know if you if this was the first time
[799.48] Frank: you'd seen this sort of thing it was uh pretty good um and one of the big problems with it was
[806.68] Frank: no one could really see what was going on because the netting was just such thick corded stuff that
[811.32] Frank: you couldn't really see unless you were standing right up next to it so seeing the netting in there
[816.92] Frank: that could make a big difference to these sort of events I think yeah I mean that's not for any
[823.16] Jae: heavy duty uh quote but also the colour does make a difference I think with it being green
[829.64] Jae: and quite a light green it washes out better with background than a black one would have um does
[834.92] Jack: anyone remember the triangle event where uh in Burgess Hill do you remember like they they put
[843.64] Jack: netting up that was like you know gym netting and stuff which is really high quality and super thick
[850.36] Jack: and the trouble is with small race quads is they go very fast and the inertia
[855.96] Jack: with enough for it to punch through the net and drag it closer to your face
[860.44] Jack: that was quite scary so I like that you used like smaller quads and that so it's a bit
[864.84] Adam Juniper: well that sounds like you could have an excellent game of chicken oh man it was close if you get to
[868.68] Adam Juniper: them we they recommend badminton netting don't they so like mainstream event I mean to let's
[876.68] Adam Juniper: drone out and we're talking about netting I know do you want to do you want to move on
[880.84] Adam Juniper: at least at least that is slightly on topic compared to some of our previous grades
[885.88] Frank: I tell you we're talking about organizing events so but with the netting we did actually have I
[892.52] Jae: mean there was probably 60 people that had at least 60 people that had a go that day um and one
[897.88] Jae: of the flights one decided to go above the lights and you know make it outside of the netting area
[903.32] Jae: so there's always things there's always one yeah but netting's a good start yeah on the on the
[909.48] Frank: on the hubs that stand up all day like were they still flying all flying by the end of the day
[914.84] Jae: pretty much I mean they their arms break and snap back together so you know what I mean
[920.04] Adam Juniper: going through when they launched we had a rotation a lot when they launched the phantom did they use
[926.28] Adam Juniper: netting and stuff they're flying it around indoors weren't they at the launch event
[930.68] Jae: yeah pretty much I mean anywhere you're flying monster rotors and now they have netting
[934.2] Adam Juniper: yeah but they did it in America so I just wondered if they did I only ask because I've been asked to
[939.4] Adam Juniper: fly a drone indoors in front of an audience and they're like oh it's a big room you won't need a
[944.2] Adam Juniper: netting um I yeah yeah and it's not that big a room do you remember the the royal institute
[953.48] Adam Juniper: lectures that you get on at Christmas they used to show for science nerds they're great yeah
[958.28] Jae: yeah yeah yeah that room but um it depends on what size you're flying isn't it
[967.64] Adam Juniper: yeah but they um it's broadcasters so they're going to want to see something with a decent
[973.08] Edd: camera and they're going to see the camera feed so there is a really good ted talk um with the guys
[979.0] Edd: talking combining artificial intelligence and drones and the visual upshot is that they're
[984.84] Edd: pretty much doing the uh flying equivalent of formation swimming and they dim the lights have
[990.28] Edd: leds on these things and it does look really really good I've seen it it's amazing it's amazing
[995.0] Edd: and they hold a net safety nets there sunshine they're just going for it I was quite impressed
[1001.48] Edd: with with how they did it so um if we if we if anyone out there and listen to land knows
[1006.92] Edd: knows of that event and knows anyone who organized it if you could uh pass their details through and
[1011.72] Edd: see how they got through the health and safety that'd be awesome maybe yeah I suppose just get
[1015.88] Adam Juniper: everyone who comes to science away there say give them crash hats yeah I've not actually that is
[1022.28] Edd: quite a clever idea no I mean yeah I'm really keeping seats I like that yeah we can all we
[1031.88] Edd: can just get the kids to fly carrier bags it'll be cheaper and less deadly well these people will
[1038.2] Adam Juniper: hopefully be broadcasting professionals and you know responsible and I'm going to ask them to avert
[1042.68] Jack: their eyes if a propeller gets near it FP FPV league Thomas Greer assume the crash position
[1050.12] Jack: says waivers don't work very good oh my god Jay have you ever had any interest in building yourself
[1059.1] Jack: a uh nano drone you know nano quad with a brushless board driver like the beef board or you know
[1068.06] Jack: using like the hubs and motors and the because you can get the ultra micro
[1076.14] Jack: FPV module with the camera and vtx built in I think um quantum make it yes I mean like Jack's
[1083.82] Jae: FPV these hubs and it's it's getting smaller isn't it it's getting to the point where it's
[1088.54] Jae: going to be composable but only if they can't be cost efficient though that's the thing isn't it
[1093.58] Adam Juniper: if you're building the the you know 250 and up then you can save money but those little ones
[1100.62] Jae: they're quite good prices but the the cheaper flatter thinner TVs cost more money when they
[1105.82] Jae: first came out and you know I when I first started flying quads about four or five years ago it was
[1113.5] Adam Juniper: I don't know about for 50 centimeter no but I mean I mean yeah that's true but I mean now
[1120.78] Adam Juniper: you know to build the tiny ones I don't know maybe my hands are just not good enough for it
[1126.54] Jack: all right sooner or later you'll be put together tweezers that's a difficulty isn't it yeah okay
[1132.54] Jack: uh right guess who got a run cam and guess who was flying a lot recently but guess who's
[1138.78] Jack: been watching someone we know someone's uploads I know there's more that I've thought I'm not
[1144.3] Jack: gonna upload but oh it's such a difference I know I was gonna go if I was following um
[1150.94] Jack: suit with Adam I was gonna be like guess who's been sat in a playground playing with himself
[1158.14] Jack: and I'm sorry but uh no carry on Jay tell us all about it what you what you're flying
[1163.18] Jae: what's it working what's going on yeah you know what it's just a cheap this little quad has done
[1168.94] Jae: everything um and mainly because it was a 250 that I originally built so just throw around the
[1174.78] Jae: field but it's lit up like a Christmas tree and dance around this guy and stuff and um yeah at
[1179.5] Jae: the moment in the current incarnation though yeah it's with the run cam and just doing some my FPV
[1183.82] Jae: but I'm really late I'm like a noob to FPV now really whilst I've been flying for a few years
[1189.74] Jae: um I've never really invested in the FPV side of things and then maybe because I'm a professional
[1193.74] Jae: for a bit and uh yeah but I'm loving it now I can't get enough morning lunch and night
[1200.86] Jae: I hope yours is orange um it is and at first I thought who ordered me orange why did they get
[1206.86] Adam Juniper: me orange but it's the best thing ever it's awesome looks like there's a lassie hard drive
[1212.14] Jae: yeah I mean it's a trash quad but she flies well and the whole run cam mount is attached
[1217.26] Jae: with zip ties it's kind of a work of art with an angle just perfectly done and smooth video
[1222.46] Edd: I don't want a trashy quad that rides well yeah only because she keeps on getting bits like
[1229.02] Jae: she even has a USB mini port so if I ever need to charge a camera because my batteries are all
[1235.74] Jae: you know she's just she's a bizarre flyer but she does well you've done like for anyone who's
[1241.1] Jack: like it's just a trashy quad you've done to you've done a lot of things with that you know like yeah
[1246.94] Jack: it's produced art and stuff it's made photos and things absolutely you know you for someone who's
[1253.18] Jack: just got like a standard quad like you know it doesn't feel like they've got anything special
[1258.62] Jack: that thing has done so much you've got so much mileage out of it and and that's the thing I've
[1264.3] Jae: liked about it ever since I got the upgraded thug arms that you said she's just been a dream
[1269.34] Jack: I wish you I wish you told me about those because I've got a set of thug arms you could have had
[1274.62] Jae: what you can buy them so cheap I've got hundreds and I don't even go through them so yeah but no
[1280.46] Jae: I mean that she's actually the one that made the photo of the Lex drone out kind of old yeah
[1285.74] Jae: background logo so she's had a lot of miles do I what do you think of the new artwork are you going
[1291.26] Frank: to be flying her at international drone day well she's probably gonna have a first race
[1295.42] Jae: wife well at least qualify yeah yeah she'll be fine have you got what yes she's you're rocking on
[1301.42] Jae: that um they're just the dys 20s I mean she's she's nothing special it's just 1806 mode it's
[1309.02] Jae: just so simple and small and understated yeah Ed is that your wife washing up or making dinner
[1316.14] Edd: no no no that's uh that's my cat my cat has been I've been whilst you've been talking
[1320.86] Edd: I've been moving keyboard and my mouse and she's being a pain in the back so I'm trying to
[1326.54] Edd: I think I think she wants a second supper but she's not getting up
[1331.74] Jack: look at cat dad over there that reminds me of something if if I can't play it because I don't
[1338.3] Jack: want the sound to bleed but if everyone just typed in cat dad into youtube and clicked the
[1343.66] Jack: first thing it should be some guy wearing a cat mask and it is the funniest thing in the world
[1350.38] Jack: yeah it is the best sorry to ruin the flow of the show so anyway like lawnmowers esc lists and cat
[1359.58] Jack: dad who's lost the audience now everything with youtube is netting don't forget the netting don't
[1365.66] Jack: worry it's it's going it's going towards something and uh that thing i'm going towards is you guys
[1371.9] Jack: earlier when we just sat around chatting and not really going anywhere you guys were talking about
[1376.38] Jack: all aboard the hype train and uh hd video with zero latency not zero but close enough
[1387.34] Edd: my pet peeve with marketing claiming zero latency when it's physically not possible it's it's just
[1393.26] Jae: yeah it's like like the frame rates on a telly it's whether it's really noticeable or not and
[1398.22] Jae: if they get close to non-noticeable that's well or or you just change the scale of measurement
[1402.86] Adam Juniper: like if you measure it in years it is zero there enough oh well with enough testing places Adam
[1410.3] Jae: exactly i think we i think the milliseconds is key though well it well the thing is even over
[1416.94] Edd: a millisecond you're going to travel a distance aren't you so if you're doing proximity flying
[1422.22] Edd: there is if the latency is sufficient then for those those of you guys out there who are
[1428.54] Edd: skilled enough through the trees might come a cropper um yeah that's my problem with it but um
[1435.02] Edd: i'm i'm at the same time i'm ultimately curious on that because they are making a lot of noise
[1440.62] Jack: um do we know anyone who's tested it over here no no we don't is any of us is anyone here
[1448.7] Jack: a fan of the graphene batteries has anyone been like you know i've got some graphene i love them
[1455.18] Jae: um jack loves them i've been meaning to buy some batteries because i need to get some
[1459.5] Jack: and i've been tempted by them do you like them jack i i tested one and career reckons he's done
[1466.46] Jae: the older connex stuff what do you think i yeah i see who's got any batteries in stock at the moment
[1475.98] Jack: yeah yeah radio see drone labs yeah when are they coming in kissed stuff is on on shorts of
[1483.66] Jack: time at the moment yeah christ christie agrees with me we we still wait i still think that's um
[1494.14] Jae: it'd be nice if it was you know we can achieve that dream of higher definition and it's just
[1498.94] Jae: progress i think it'll happen um it's just at what point is it affordable and starts to become
[1504.22] Jae: a matrix it's just like the old radio frequencies has moved to 2.4 and then you know things progress
[1510.14] Jack: over the years what i want to know is why they're using linear antennas yeah to thomas greece says
[1518.46] Jae: it's near zero so that's that's hopeful i don't i don't believe you and it is sorry it doesn't
[1525.02] Adam Juniper: encoded yeah but so it's encoder than decoded it's a proper it's a digital signal yeah yeah
[1533.1] Jae: um i don't believe it no but it's going to come out at a high price i think and slowly drop over
[1538.38] Jae: the year i think it'll be an interesting six to twelve months of what happens with the because
[1543.66] Jae: let's face it that the stuff that's out now is more than adequate and that should hopefully
[1547.98] Jae: become more accessible or cheaper and that's that's a positive all right it's it's definitely
[1555.85] Edd: uh a step in the right direction i mean it's um if you follow elon musk at all his his whole
[1562.73] Edd: methodology with his development is he he releases to those that can afford first they pay for the
[1568.33] Edd: development um then he's he comes down a notch um in terms of affordability and it's happened
[1575.13] Edd: with his latest car it's got a bit closer to the mass market um in fairness he didn't exactly
[1581.93] Adam Juniper: invent that model did he did what sorry he didn't exactly invent the early adopter model
[1587.45] Edd: no no no no not at all but it's it's he's very good at talking it up um and
[1593.77] Edd: it's i think it often with these things it can be how you frame it um so i'm i'm hoping what i'm
[1600.65] Edd: hoping is that the FPV system sorry comes out and the obviously the racing is getting more and more
[1609.61] Edd: popular and we're going to see some of the mini air show in a few weeks but um the the money behind
[1615.53] Edd: the racing is getting better so perhaps the event organizers will get sponsorship to run that system
[1620.97] Edd: as an event system that may be where we see it really take off is it events first yeah sort of
[1628.09] Jack: like a luxury of we get to use that at a show like it's the mini air show and it's almost like
[1636.97] Jack: field testing it you know because if it works well at an event you know like you're you're just
[1643.61] Jack: bringing in because like for instance right you own a set of fat shark goggles yeah so you've got
[1650.57] Jack: those and there's no way you're going to have a module for them do you know what i mean so
[1656.57] Jack: then you're bringing a tripod and then you're bringing an external uh receiver but if you go to
[1663.85] Jack: an event and you can just turn your receiver off and your channel's all locked in and no one else
[1668.89] Jack: can disturb you and it's a clearer picture that's going to be great say i uh decided to fit this
[1676.73] Adam Juniper: then how much is it going to set me back we don't know yet do we yeah 10th of may apparently find out
[1682.73] Frank: less than a grand apparently less than a grand yeah jay was pretty close with his guests earlier
[1690.09] Jae: of 400 999 all right expensive goggles is what they'll cost why don't we place bets here i think
[1699.85] Jack: that'll be funny tenor each we'll guess the brightest closest one wins at least not what
[1705.05] Adam Juniper: wins a free one oh no hang on we kind of is it just nine nine days to the air show
[1712.25] Jack: is that it yeah oh man nine days i mean yeah it's pretty excited
[1718.73] Adam Juniper: nine days is within weather forecast territory no not really not not this time of year no
[1728.01] Jae: not when it's snowing up over parts of the uk oh i just snowed in london yesterday yesterday
[1733.45] Jae: take a fork it was weird yeah so um running the airwaves down there we've got the i think
[1739.37] Jae: of the uh frequency for the local fm radio 87.7 i think for the day two days it's gonna be awesome
[1747.13] Edd: it's gonna be really good you're gonna be there red yeah absolutely um i'm gonna
[1752.09] Edd: went to the race which is gonna be hysterical i've bought pink feathers especially for the race
[1756.49] Edd: just a man in that you are brighten i got i got some pink props as well crashing which is gonna
[1763.45] Edd: be great um this is this is actually my first event i'm i'm really really sorry first event
[1768.49] Edd: and it's kind of fun to be doing it actually i feel a bit of a fraud sitting here talking on
[1772.57] Edd: this radio show when there's you know many thousand better pilots than me but um you know
[1777.77] Jae: it's so you're talking kinks that was excellent and that's all we need it's it's something you
[1783.69] Jae: learn isn't it flying fpv is just something you learn so the longer you do it the more you better
[1787.53] Edd: you get generally so i think that's fine flying the fpv bit fpv bit is fine but i could just do
[1793.37] Edd: the air gates being about 200 bigger yeah i am great yeah or just not that at the beginning of
[1801.61] Jae: the show drag race just legs to fly around at the beginning of the show thomas greer informed me
[1806.73] Jack: that i had 14 points in the fpv league so like well done yeah well done is that good or is that
[1813.21] Jack: like on your license that's one lap you've got books for speeding in a quad no um by the way uh
[1821.69] Jack: voices dude just wants to point out that we will be on 87.7 FM so live and tune in on the
[1832.33] Jack: car radio and stuff so yeah so uh let's draw drone on we'll be live on FM you'll be able to tune in
[1839.53] Adam Juniper: or bind whatever you guys want to for those of you who remember radios that's what you can do
[1846.25] Jack: yeah 25 milliwatt transmitter as well yeah definitely you're a total fun killer god even
[1854.01] Jack: at the fpv league at the um at white chapel no the um the drone nationals they they had an
[1861.21] Jack: exemption for 200 ah right so i just want to point them out we will be on 25 for the mini air show
[1867.53] Jae: yeah with an FM radio no 20 no you can't just change the sticker okay okay so along with
[1875.93] Edd: batteries and kiss related products who's got 25 transmitters in stock at the moment because i've
[1881.85] Edd: been searching all week what's up what not yeah it's just everyone's sold out don't you have one
[1890.49] Edd: already no i'm trying to get one it's not successful yeah i have one i know it would be
[1896.81] Jack: nice to have a spare but i only have one we sell a little bit radio say so you put what are they
[1902.49] Jack: in stock i've checked yeah yeah the fx ones you have to specially order them what's up they're
[1908.41] Jack: in stock or you have yeah yeah there's some on the shelf okay can you reserve me one please jack
[1914.73] Frank: there's plenty i've got one of those so i've got to somehow check whether it is on 200 or 25 at
[1920.89] Jack: the moment if the wire is left whole someone should be buying all the 25 milliwatt transmitter
[1925.85] Jack: take him down and selling him on the day because jay is a true businessman yeah so if the wires
[1932.65] Jack: if the wire is intact it is 25 milliwatt and if you cut the wire then it's 200 okay there they are
[1944.73] Jack: off cold will kill you only have 25 milliwatt license i i still i still don't get that because
[1952.09] Frank: i have been flying with other people that have had 200 and i've been having that without the wire
[1957.45] Frank: cut and it still worked perfectly fine for me so either you've got magical powers either magical
[1963.69] Frank: powers magical or something's oh yeah i don't know what's going on there but either or just
[1970.57] Frank: haven't been flying far enough away with everyone else maybe let's see everyone should flatten you
[1976.33] Jack: with 25 mil if they got like 200 or 600 they should actually kill you it's it we're at hidden
[1983.69] Edd: valley at the weekend and one of our one of our group had um 25 and the rest of us won 200 and
[1990.57] Edd: he was getting stomped over until he put his directional patch antenna on and then he was
[1996.17] Edd: absolutely fine there was no issue with witchcraft so maybe your antennas are just that good jack
[2003.93] Jae: yeah i hope so well i in any case it's 25 milliwatts max for the video transition
[2012.63] Jack: so i've got two but technically one of them's nicos has anyone seen the neon room no
[2022.15] Jae: is that the new playstation no that's where some people from the public can go down and uh flies
[2026.95] Frank: yeah yeah is it is now a good time to as there is a bit of a lull in conversation to mention about
[2037.38] Frank: how we're going to be changing how our let's drone on is broadcast in a few weeks time
[2042.9] Adam Juniper: it would be better to do it in advance of it happening than after so
[2049.62] Frank: so to give everyone a bit of context uh the thursday night show uh it's obviously been
[2055.54] Frank: uh created very lovingly by dom and dane to promote uh you may know dom as the voice of doom from our
[2066.02] Frank: uh text feed there we go to promote and support up and coming radio presenters and musicians and
[2073.78] Frank: all that sort of malarkey and we've been very lucky to get an hour slot every week with them
[2080.98] Frank: for them to just yabber on about what we do and and in a few weeks time
[2088.5] Frank: we're going to be releasing that slot back to them so they can actually keep all their audience
[2094.26] Frank: and we'll be taking our audience of people who like listening to people yabber on about stuff
[2098.98] Frank: over to poweringon.co.uk so that is where you will find us from then on and you'll be able to
[2105.54] Frank: carry on with the canvas and the chat and everything but we'll be on there and we'll have
[2113.22] Frank: some other hopefully interesting shows about talking about other similar sorts of things so
[2120.66] Frank: upper in the works we've got 3d printing coding that sort of thing that hopefully we'll have
[2127.62] Frank: other people talking about in the evening so if other people want to get on and get in touch
[2132.42] Jae: about that how do they get in touch if they want to host the show on that as well can they so if
[2136.1] Frank: they're interested in hosting a show then on poweringon.co.uk there will be or there is already
[2145.14] Frank: a contact page so they can contact us on poweringonradio.com so if you're interested
[2153.22] Frank: or if you've got an idea that you think this has to be covered find someone to cover it then get
[2160.5] Frank: your thoughts known at poweringonradio at gmail.com thank you look at Frank getting stuff done
[2168.58] Frank: oh yeah i try producer Frank
[2173.94] Jack: also this is a shout out to bradders if my website isn't done by the end of the month
[2179.54] Jack: i'm breaking your legs is this is this a shout out or a breaking no i didn't say i was going to kill
[2186.74] Jack: him i said i was going to injure him what's your website going to be jack um it is uh what's the
[2193.62] Jack: name of this show oh yeah that's right let drone out i can't remember if that's .com or co.uk anymore
[2200.34] Jack: because it doesn't work and um yeah you better do it what me to do one i am ace at websites
[2207.86] Jack: uh anyone any leave him in charge he obviously gets distracted by what's in his van
[2217.06] Jae: and it's well now it's flying season as well by the way it's .com um but now it's flying season
[2221.86] Edd: time time he actually corrects it's for continuity as well we've sort of mixed up let's drone on and
[2227.38] Edd: let's draw now yeah did i say let's drone on well we're both you and frank really sometimes
[2234.9] Jae: we do let drone on there don't we yeah i think yeah the golden episode it hasn't hasn't been
[2241.54] Jack: changed like it hasn't you know it's not the same without tony let's move the show is called let's
[2247.38] Frank: drone out but we drone on yeah i think we should tagline away it's all right because we're gonna
[2253.54] Jae: power up no power on powering on powering on .co.uk jack i think if um pony's listening we need to get
[2260.74] Jae: him on for a guest show we need to have him back for a guest the point is when he's ready awesome
[2265.86] Jack: thursdays he's like superman he's gone to his his solitude mountain of ice tony had said she
[2273.94] Frank: was going to try and get on today uh because he was going to you know encourage me into talking
[2279.54] Frank: about the british fbv racing association championship yeah he's been worried about
[2286.26] Frank: and pushing for information on so i i have been bothering greer as it happens and trying to get
[2294.5] Frank: all the information together so as people might not know british fpv racing association or bfpvra
[2304.5] Frank: they are running the qualifying events for the uk national um drone racing so nationals last year
[2315.46] Frank: um it will be for this year it will be determined by national rankings
[2322.26] Frank: for pilots that have been racing in bfpvra qualifying events um and so all the points
[2330.74] Frank: that jack was talking about earlier and the points that tony's got if uh you sign up to
[2337.14] Frank: as a member of the bfpvra uh you'll be in the leaderboard and then that will decide whether
[2343.7] Frank: or not you get into the national races as tom says too long uh too long do not read
[2354.42] Frank: compete in the qualifying events get points based on your qualifying position um so the qualifying
[2361.14] Frank: events at the moment we've had two so that was white chapel and there was also thunder drone
[2368.82] Frank: and where was that though so is this a bit like the fifa world rankings
[2373.54] Edd: yes it's exactly like the fifa world rankings um i'm on the page now so they've got four events
[2379.86] Edd: listed for the rest of this year june 17th western park model show so that uh they're not
[2385.86] Frank: all the not all the events that are listed on the website are qualifying events um so anyone who's
[2392.34] Frank: running an event if they opt to try to become a qualifying event they've then got to register up
[2400.1] Frank: 32 bfpvra members in order to um be able to be recognized as a qualifying event just so that
[2409.62] Frank: you know you can't just have one person in the middle of nowhere winning all the points um so
[2416.5] Frank: but they haven't been announced yet the next two but they're probably going to be the two that are
[2421.62] Frank: up there that are western park model air show 18th 19th of june and queens cup air race which
[2427.46] Edd: is in hampshire 30th and 31st of july who's that what tom's um put up on the on the chat say about
[2434.66] Edd: the northern event um there's but compete uh competing qualifying events get points based
[2440.58] Edd: on your qualifying position at the end of the session your top three scores go to the table
[2445.54] Edd: so um that's season yeah that's pretty good that's a nice way of doing it okay
[2453.14] Frank: yeah so everyone who's interested in getting involved uh in racing then you need to sign up
[2460.98] Frank: as a bfpvra member and check on the websites on on their website uh i've also got facebook that's
[2470.34] Frank: you know facebook.com slash bfpvra and so that's also a good one to sign up to facebook will also
[2477.22] Adam Juniper: let you track down thomas and uh try and encourage him to give you an event near your location
[2482.58] Adam Juniper: he's currently trying to trying to organize events in the north including oxford which
[2488.02] Frank: is apparently the middle well yeah so the the nationals came under a bit of fire last year i
[2494.82] Frank: believe of not having a lot of uh inclusion with the north so rather than bfpvra still grid but as
[2503.54] Frank: fpvleague.co.uk are going to be organizing an event in the north wherever the north decides
[2511.94] Frank: the north is so yeah 25 isn't it i think that's that's just what oxford is currently beating
[2520.74] Jae: manchester new castle and the like it's it's the what the gap services so as soon as you get there
[2526.18] Edd: that's where they're gonna hold it in brightening everything to the north probably around manchester
[2530.9] Frank: tom saying yeah so that that will be decided but hopefully that will give people up north a chance
[2538.98] Frank: to qualify but the biggest problem that the bfpvra is having at the moment is a lack of people
[2545.62] Frank: able to organize events because you know the bfpvra are trying to organize all how the nationals is
[2552.1] Frank: going to work and they're still working out those details so those volunteers with their bits of
[2558.34] Frank: time that they can spare they're busy doing that they don't have time to organize new events so
[2564.1] Frank: they need lots of people to uh get their groups of people together join us an affiliate club
[2571.38] Frank: on bfpvra and then that way they can support those clubs in organizing their own qualifying
[2580.18] Frank: events so the bfpvra can offer support for organizing the safety and give guidance for
[2589.46] Frank: getting sponsorship and dealing with media and press coverage and they can also help with on
[2596.58] Frank: the day stuff perhaps so staff for marshalling assistance with video frequency management and
[2604.42] Frank: organizing the pilot registrations they're also offering uh to help out with equipment so race
[2611.14] Frank: gates event tents generators that sort of thing and helping with the video production from the
[2616.5] Frank: events but they need people that are actually able to sort of take that guidance and assistance
[2623.78] Frank: and make it into an event so if anyone's interested that's what you need to do
[2628.26] Frank: to get an event in your area is get a group of people together make an affiliate club of the
[2634.26] Frank: bfpvra and organize an event it's great it's good to talk to frank yeah yeah all right now have a
[2645.64] Adam Juniper: glass of water frank i will have one yeah breathe breathe i can't believe how organized frank is
[2653.16] Jack: just can't somebody has to be i could have a file of facts it wouldn't be as organized as frank
[2662.84] Jack: it's crazy um what about wales career you know you know like there's wales
[2669.8] Jack: what about there that's off to the left never seen an event organized in wales
[2676.84] Jack: because it's a perfect place racist scottish person well actually in wales they do get a lot
[2681.56] Jae: of low flying military aircraft yeah there's a big low flying area is it all the wales or is that
[2687.56] Jae: just um well it's the parts of wales that people live in i believe the nice countryside you might
[2693.8] Frank: want to have a race in yeah there's like the north where no one lives there's a south where
[2701.0] Frank: either there is cities or there there is uh the the actual low flying areas so there's a bit of
[2708.44] Edd: a problem frank i don't know if you've been following the news but certain parliamentary
[2712.2] Edd: members have been suspended for saying saying such divisive things recently into what's your membership
[2721.4] Frank: it's all right millions and millions of people do live in the north yeah exactly very worried
[2726.12] Frank: north of wales i mean yeah it doesn't make it a lot better that's true you want jcb to dig your
[2733.4] Adam Juniper: hole a little deeper are you saying nobody lives there or just nobody worth speaking of
[2738.04] Frank: oh i just mean that not enough people yeah i'm not enough people live in the north of wales
[2743.88] Frank: and fly drones in you know racing ways so oh my god
[2751.08] Jack: picking on frank because like he's the only one one who's got anyone talking so he's the
[2756.92] Jack: only one i could pick on no no we know where that happened don't i'll get the tricopter out again
[2766.28] Edd: sorry so um anybody out there got some spare kiss escs i really need some
[2774.76] Edd: what have you done i haven't been off three weeks come on
[2779.72] Jack: what have you done to that poor thing nothing nothing is fine i just need spares what happened
[2785.4] Edd: to the damages are you just hoarding stuff no that's that's adam's job um no no generally i
[2791.4] Edd: think there's a there's a huge shortage at the moment i'm i've lost three week last two weeks
[2795.64] Edd: sorry i've just been absolutely incredible flying flying with this this new stuff um and i'm just
[2801.72] Edd: living in fear of breaking it and not being able to fly again because i i can't go back i can't go
[2807.56] Adam Juniper: back now it's that's it okay listeners send him all your kiss escs yeah in a related note i've got
[2815.16] Adam Juniper: far fewer gold bars than i need or massive suitcases of money so you know feel free
[2821.4] Jae: i suppose that comes down to what you're wanting to fly isn't it and do you want it to end up in
[2825.4] Jae: one piece because it's a hard to think it's more expensive or anything and that's why i think i
[2829.64] Jae: like having one that i don't mind if it tumbles when it comes down too low you know and i suppose
[2835.4] Edd: that's the price of having a nice setup with rare bits yeah it it is but um i went flying a couple
[2843.72] Edd: weekends ago with a friend who is was curious about the flight controller and the escs and
[2850.52] Edd: he he he does fly rate but he still likes to flick the horizon button to get himself out of
[2856.68] Edd: trouble um chris weston and um uh we've been we've been hounding him to fly rate and
[2865.72] Edd: chris doesn't fly right oh here we go he doesn't fly right mate no he does but sparingly i would
[2876.52] Edd: say um it was interesting watching watching him fly fly the quad um even he sort of got the the
[2886.76] Edd: locked in feel and didn't feel any need to to fall back onto any horizon and he was so impressed
[2892.52] Edd: with it he went out and ordered two flight controllers off the bat and just waiting for
[2898.2] Edd: you to seize now so i think it's quite telling um that i think i mean i'm not i'm not a hugely
[2905.8] Edd: experienced rate pilot i'll be the first to admit but it's it's as a sort of relative newbie in that
[2912.36] Edd: field um i get a lot of reassurance flying this i i've noticed a difference uh just with the
[2919.88] Edd: precision you know i point it and it goes where i want and a lot of that's down to tuning but
[2925.48] Edd: flying this off stop pits it just seems to work out of the box um i'm very happy with that
[2931.0] Edd: experience so yeah i'm i'm desperate to start collecting more bits of spares because i really
[2937.4] Edd: don't think i want to head back down the clean flight route again i suppose like uh that i've
[2944.04] Jae: noticed recently is i've chosen to just fly whatever wind is there as long as i can fly
[2948.84] Jae: and that offsets any sometimes locked in feeling because i figured well i just want to be able to
[2953.32] Jae: fly and in the past coming from planes i used to choose nice days where it was calm and but i'm
[2958.92] Jae: kind of trying to get out of that mentality flying rate because the uk is never not windy
