[187.14] Frank: it was a really good day i think don must be you know magic to manage to have got all that

[202.02] Dom: she didn't know i was doing this until about 10 minutes ago so we'll find out

[212.34] Jack: the cabbage that i sacrificed for the good weather yes oh dear you're gonna be out with
[218.1] Frank: did you actually get to fly anything this time don yeah on thursday
[223.94] Dom: well friday we went down on friday and i went for a little fly and then uh me and jay were
[230.1] Dom: trying to work out um at certain altitudes and things and uh i got i i got out of range of my
[235.22] Dom: spectrum transmitter and then blew over a fence which i then subsequently described that discovered
[241.14] Dom: that uh was actually the boundary of the ssi so we carefully picked tiptoed through the orchids
[247.06] Dom: and retrieved my uh my codcopter with the help of johnny banton and chipco and uh and and then
[253.86] Dom: worked out that she'd never go over there again and that was good but yeah that was my flight
[258.26] Dom: for the weekend i smashed my run cam which was a pain but uh anyway moment of silence
[264.1] Frank: for anyone who's outside of southeast england or listening from the future on podcastland or
[270.1] Frank: something we are talking about uh international drone day that was the seventh of may so it was
[276.5] Frank: just last saturday and we celebrated it with team mini air show um so on saturday we were at long
[284.9] Frank: hill sports center and then sunday we went for it to hidden valley where rotor racing uh had a relay
[292.42] John: race that that we were i'm very um relying that that was one of the most talked about of the
[299.06] Jack: international drone day events yep in the whole world i just like to say drones are good and
[305.06] Jack: helis are better laws raise up for the master race jack you didn't start flying helis or
[311.62] Jack: something i don't think anyone was selling one after last week yeah i don't deserve to i don't
[317.86] Dom: even deserve to look at heli excellent so question for all you guys what did you think of the team
[324.02] Dom: format for rotor racing guys for the event well for all of you really what did you think of it
[329.94] Dom: seems to have gone down really well on the social feeds uh i i put eric and craig on the spot to do
[335.94] Dom: it but actually universally everyone seems to have given it a thumbs up but i just want to i
[340.66] Dom: didn't get out and fly i i was just about keeping up with the radio signals and putting them on the
[344.58] Dom: screen um so i just saw a lot of very hot and bothered people going on and off the race and
[351.22] Jack: winning or changing bits of their quads you don't you don't get a true representation until someone
[356.66] Jack: slank you off on online on some distance for forum so i don't know i don't know about that
[365.14] Jae: now a lot of people to fly um i just wished half my team would be able to fly with me and not just me
[371.86] Dom: but it's a good format it seemed to work well everyone seemed to get a race or or get a few
[376.74] Dom: races who wanted to and everyone had plenty to do there was no sitting around picking your nose
[381.46] Frank: yeah it was quite nice from our perspective of team poop that were uh you know love the shirts
[388.5] Frank: guys yeah definitely the bottom of the leaderboard that um but we still got to fly loads which is
[394.9] Frank: nice because you know i think most other formats would be uh lost by then we'd be kicked out of
[401.14] John: not flying very much so that's nice if you eliminate yourself early on yeah that was quite
[407.86] Dom: a nice way of doing it because the one thing that i found really interesting from the production
[411.78] Dom: desk is basically i discovered how to televise it properly while i was there i've been puzzling
[416.74] Dom: that for about two years not so much what we actually did on the day but the last bits in
[422.26] Dom: my head about creating a format came together uh and it was the two old boys with their cloth hats
[428.02] Dom: sitting on the um sitting on the flight line both days just made it click for me and they'd come
[433.7] Dom: because they were bored of watching cricket and they they are literally digging into rotor racing
[439.78] Dom: into the fpv leagues into all the information finding out which flyers to follow and they're
[444.9] Dom: bumbling around following them you know in their retirement oh my god that's the format sit there
[451.22] John: you want to appeal to cricket fans then you just need to make sure there are plenty of ways to buy
[455.7] Dom: beer near the uh touch lines well you're not yeah probably not wrong but don't we need to
[461.46] Jack: something and then offer it to ashes i suppose should we get one of the
[467.54] Jack: family guys to set light to me and then offer the ashes of some sort of prize and then i
[471.54] Dom: won't know i suppose what i meant by that is it's not a short 30-minute highlights package
[475.78] Dom: that's actually really going to sell this no there will be that but actually there is a real
[480.98] Dom: like long form six seven hours put it on in the background format so i think next time we need to
[486.42] Dom: get better leader boarding and stuff worked out which is just all to do with logistics i say next
[490.42] Dom: time if somebody else does it again are you listening missus voice of doom i need to throw
[497.78] Dom: the right advice in their direction to do the formatting right for the product video production
[501.7] Dom: which i think if you get the spectators in you can keep the sweepstakes going i don't think the
[506.5] Dom: races always want to just sweepstate with each other i think it's interesting when you've got
[510.5] Frank: spectators but what about from your points of view eric and craig if you're still there
[516.42] Frank: like yeah how how is it for you like with the you know you've obviously done a lot of
[521.22] Frank: events as rotor racing in a kind of more standard format of you know maybe one or two races at
[527.86] Frank: time up to eight and you know having them just compete against each other but this format of
[533.86] Frank: having teams of people and and going in different rounds in different heats and just seeing how many
[539.62] Frank: laps you can get in in the time you had available and trying to make points based on that how was
[544.26] Eric Li Koo: that for you as organizers i have to say when doctor said this to that we want to do a team
[553.62] Eric Li Koo: relay race i did think oh my god what are we letting ourselves in for um but i had to sit
[559.14] Eric Li Koo: down with it richard hartley was um was involved early on and he kind of gave me some ideas
[563.7] Eric Li Koo: and um and i actually thought no this is this is a a worthy challenge um and i sat down and thought
[570.02] Eric Li Koo: about it some more and the loads of problems came up and i tore loads of hair out and um tore some
[575.22] Eric Li Koo: more out uh along the way but i think a lot of charting up me um i think you guys who got shouted
[583.94] Eric Li Koo: out on saturday and sunday uh but bad uh you should see what prey gets on a daily basis but
[591.94] Eric Li Koo: i thought it actually went went down
[594.42] Eric Li Koo: uh what's the things i always try to incorporate in any kind of race format that i put together
[600.18] Eric Li Koo: is maximum amount of flying for everybody um unless there is a a real need to knock people
[609.14] Eric Li Koo: out in a in a kind of knockout tree kind of way um i do think that if everyone's made the effort
[614.58] Eric Li Koo: to come all this way to come and race to participate in our events that they should race and that's it
[619.62] Eric Li Koo: they should be up in the air um so that was one of the things i've i've been quite pleased i managed
[624.82] Frank: to keep in yeah definitely i mean when we were having the pilot briefing and there's us four
[630.82] Frank: there that uh not not you know not been racing before at all and then you saying particularly
[636.5] Frank: like it's all about having fun and and that's what we're here for so we're not going to be
[640.26] Frank: too strict on things then i think that was a big weight off of our shoulders and i think that so
[645.62] Frank: that was that was nice that you did that and yeah it was a really fun day
[650.1] Dom: i think about 30% of the stress came from moving from two sites and if we'd done everything at
[655.3] Dom: hidden valley if we'd known what the weekend was going to be like and done everything at hidden
[659.38] Dom: valley um then i think it would have given uh craig and eric to set the course up and
[666.74] Dom: let everyone have a practice and work it all out on saturday and that would have made sunday much
[671.38] Dom: more intense and start earlier and finish on time and be a complete race and so on and i think that
[676.1] Dom: would have that would have been if i could wave a magic one and rewind that bit that's the bit i
[680.42] Eric Li Koo: change yeah i think one of the biggest stress points was actually turning up on this all the
[685.54] Eric Li Koo: to turn it right angles it's like oh no is that because crops have grown well there was some stuff
[692.58] John: there was some stuff that happened that wouldn't have happened if we'd done that like um we had
[697.62] John: sarah from the drone minds videos um oh yeah pristine down some tv talk you know showing
[703.94] John: people how to enter next year you know i think i think i think and they they both traveled in
[709.3] John: from brighton on you know public transport so i'm pretty sure they wouldn't have made it
[715.62] Dom: i don't know unless you played on a bus i think yeah i think you need a little bit of both but
[720.98] Dom: i think um i think from the point of view of the racing uh it's just the problem is with the races
[726.58] Dom: had all been drawn over and spent two days in hidden valley longhill would have been quite sparse
[732.18] John: everyone was going to know about drones one way or another so you can really probably concentrate
[737.14] Dom: yeah it what was good is we ended up with a perfect balance even though it was what it was
[741.62] Dom: it was a bit of stress it was but everyone had really good for you i think it worked really
[745.14] Jack: really well yeah thanks i ran into jama from drone magazine the magazine that um included
[755.22] Jack: yeah sponsored the program and you're able to pull it out from the center page and she's such a
[759.46] Jack: sweetie and uh yeah i just wanted to kind of give those guys a little shout out and now they're
[765.06] Jack: really such a good job and you know really helping the hobby and doing well yeah i just
[770.82] John: transmitted my report for the show to the magazine and yeah jama's amazing what a sweetheart
[777.94] Jack: absolute star and uh and of course marriage jack
[782.1] Jack: yeah i know i know
[784.74] Frank: the other thing that i think is worth uh really bringing up was um the the rotor racing display
[791.86] Frank: team i thought that was pretty impressive as a as a visual thing for you know just general audience
[798.9] Frank: to watch that was pretty fantastic seeing how how many quads was that all in following each other
[804.66] Craig Leong: in close formation we normally do eight wow
[812.82] Craig Leong: the demo team we launched this weekend uh we thought it'd be a good event to show some of
[818.82] Craig Leong: the guys um the team consists of uh Brett Collis uh Gary Kent Chi Lao um Tom Stanton and we've just
[828.9] Craig Leong: added um Matt Evans and Francis to the to the demo team and i've got a place for another
[837.46] Craig Leong: certain boy who's doing exams at the moment and there's another there's another place
[845.7] Craig Leong: we've got our eye on a pilot which we're going to add to that so so yeah that was good um basically
[853.46] Craig Leong: we formed the demo team to show um public basically what can be done and how exciting
[860.26] Craig Leong: racing can be done to show how we do eight pilot races um and just uh give the guys a bit of a
[867.86] Craig Leong: chilled out session to do something at a show so it worked quite well and that were you were the
[873.94] John: guys with the um the smoke trailer yeah pretty much that was awesome although i'm pretty sure
[878.98] Jack: jack thought it was an EFC fight yeah it did it definitely made my insides hurt
[886.74] Jae: from a number of kiss ones that he's uh set on fire yeah
[890.74] Craig Leong: that they've they've changed i'll help with that a bit i think
[896.5] Craig Leong: doesn't help for jack though somehow yeah i'd have to get a smoke system on jack squad somehow
[902.5] Jae: no need he's got potentially four that he can start smoking
[909.94] Frank: but yeah where is all the the acro flying and and the other sort of racing practices
[916.34] Frank: in the display field that we had they were really interesting to watch sort of occasionally swapping
[921.7] Frank: back from back and forth between the the giant video wall and the the actual stuff that's
[926.66] Frank: happening on in front of you i think the the display team from road to racing was you know
[931.94] Frank: just visually really exciting to watch because it was all in close formation there was a you know
[937.86] Frank: good focus there and and yeah especially with like the the little tweaks of like the the smoke
[943.3] Frank: cloud coming off of one of them a part way through all of that it was just really fun to watch and
[948.98] Frank: just watching it directly line of sight so i would definitely say that's a really good one
[955.06] Frank: please keep that going i look forward to seeing how it goes on we've got more stuff coming here
[960.66] Frank: i've got loads of tricks up my sleeve for that yeah have you got any other events plans that
[965.94] Craig Leong: you're going to either be running or demoing um the next big event for us is farmborough
[972.18] Craig Leong: international air show uh which is the uk small little event yeah yeah 80 000 people i think
[982.34] Craig Leong: basically the fpv uk um masters uh race uh it's all invitational pilots um i don't think eric's
[993.3] Craig Leong: worked out the race format exactly yet but uh yeah it should be good uh hopefully we get some
[997.86] Craig Leong: internationals um that accept the challenge um and i'm sure some of you guys have seen the drone
[1004.1] Craig Leong: simulation there's competition recently um and the top five pilots from uh the competition
[1012.58] Craig Leong: are being invited to come and fly at farmborough and against um the more well-known fpv race pilots
[1021.38] Craig Leong: and if people don't know about that competition where can they find out more
[1024.66] Craig Leong: the running uh the competition was run i think it closed two weeks ago and so uh it was promoted
[1033.86] Craig Leong: on the uk ds site farmborough site quite a few i know jm had formula fpv he he's um
[1042.1] Craig Leong: he promoted it quite a bit so if anyone didn't find out about it i'll be surprised he does a
[1049.3] Craig Leong: pretty good job at uh promoting stuff on online on social media so but yeah um i think they might
[1059.3] Craig Leong: open another um event i'm not too sure i was speaking to ollie yesterday at the farmborough
[1067.3] Craig Leong: uh press day um we just got to see how many pilots we can fit in so it should be interesting
[1073.7] Craig Leong: at the moment it's 25 pilots so far um including the some some guys so let's see what happens
[1082.58] Eric Li Koo: and by we you mean me don't you craig because basically i'm the one that has to work with the
[1087.14] Craig Leong: cram into the time slots we're given this this is my revenge when i say we i mean iraq behind
[1094.42] Craig Leong: behind every great man there's a friend but i get it started and i just give it more work
[1097.94] Craig Leong: okay which in turn is why you get shouted at it's a vicious circle yeah that's why we worked
[1106.1] Frank: so well together so i guess all your time is going to be taken up with racing there so you're
[1111.62] Frank: not going to have much of an opportunity for the demo team or are you going to be having them there
[1115.38] Craig Leong: as well um most of the demo team are in uh well we'll be racing anyway um just because they're
[1124.34] Craig Leong: probably one of the fastest uk pilots there uh the show schedule as it stands which farmborough's
[1131.22] Craig Leong: given us we've got slots for racing and slots for demos so i think guys like parrot uh dji um unique
[1141.14] Craig Leong: they all got demo slots which they'll present their products and then um hopefully we'll get the
[1148.1] Craig Leong: the the road racing boys to do a demo for you guys so it should be good um if there's time
[1154.66] Craig Leong: we have invited some of the celebrities and maybe they can join in and have a bit of a fun
[1159.54] Craig Leong: fun time no so the truck the truck's been the truck is actually a very interesting truck
[1165.3] Craig Leong: there's going to be a walkway underneath um and basically the spectators will be immersed in the
[1172.98] Craig Leong: racetrack so the it's fully netted off and caged and uh there's two up and over tunnels
[1182.58] Craig Leong: which the pilots fly through to get to the next section uh there's a walkway which is a walkway
[1190.98] Craig Leong: and the spectators can basically be really up close to the racing and still be protected and safe
[1197.22] Craig Leong: so it should be really interesting to go watch that one yeah the concept is that you'll be able
[1201.86] Eric Li Koo: to get right in there with the with the racers which will be a first i think so yeah it should
[1208.74] Craig Leong: be good we're working with the airport security and all that to make sure that it works and
[1216.02] Craig Leong: obviously farm has got a very high yeah safe forward so we've got to make sure we're on
[1221.22] Craig Leong: top of our game as well so no pressure yeah so but yeah so the next the other interesting
[1232.58] Craig Leong: one that we're doing is formula fpv i've been working with those guys um on bringing quite
[1239.7] Craig Leong: interesting racing to the general public um so anyone can join in it'll be an open event as far
[1245.46] Craig Leong: as i know um and there's some interesting night racing stuff i think jim's finally sought out and
[1252.18] Craig Leong: neil yeah so yeah so that should be another quite interesting event to go through and watch and
[1258.74] Jack: compete in unbelievable coverage um the uh formula fpv had because uh even talking just before the
[1267.46] Jack: show started last week with boris b he mentioned that to me as well so uh it's also includes some
[1275.46] Jack: night racing i believe which is is quite crazy man those guys really do pull out the stops
[1282.5] Eric Li Koo: so it should be good yeah jim's right in the chat now he's saying there's night racing wing racing
[1287.94] Eric Li Koo: fpv truck racing um it's going to be a an entire weekend of fpv overload i think yeah fpv mania
[1298.5] Jack: it is unbelievable i it was one of the best events i've ever been to if not the yeah last year was i
[1306.02] Craig Leong: think a lot of people still talk about forming fpv this year so yeah and it's such a famous track
[1311.06] Jack: as well especially now it's like in in the fpv simulators and everything yeah um that's the
[1320.42] Craig Leong: simulators really interesting um i'll speak to ray um who who does the simulator um he's really
[1328.74] Craig Leong: trying to work for everyone and make it feel as good as realized as possible yeah so yeah it's
[1334.82] Craig Leong: uh it's good and he's trying to what he's trying to do is incorporate all the tracks that we've flown
[1340.18] Craig Leong: and ones that are coming up um so he's he's really trying to get this fpv sim going and making it
[1348.1] Craig Leong: interesting for people who you know say you must start an event you can go and race it if you want
[1352.82] Craig Leong: to or um like the farmer one we've we've drew that up and uh actually ben colis i don't know if you
[1361.06] Craig Leong: name uh brek sorry ben brek colis um and the the roach racing demo team guys pilots back then
[1371.14] Craig Leong: when i sort of started getting the concept together uh together with chi we all came up
[1377.06] Craig Leong: with the concept and uh on how to get something that farmer wanted they gave us some specs and
[1383.86] Craig Leong: we said okay we'll see what we can do so yeah it's good having some pilots on your side to help you
[1389.3] Craig Leong: with um with tracks and uh they they they they drew something up which they can enjoy and hopefully
[1398.02] Craig Leong: you'll bring that on to the audience as well right i hope they don't crash because i can't fly that
[1403.78] Jack: track at all right um we're coming up to our halfway mark is there anything else we want to
[1408.82] Frank: cover about the um this weekend yeah so we haven't actually spoken about john uh so john
[1417.7] Frank: is from a line trek so he's a collective pitch 3d heli pilot and they really stole the show when
[1426.34] Frank: when they were doing their displays you had i think uh a couple of individual displays just
[1432.42] Frank: showing off what they can do and then one stepping it up a notch doing uh two at the same time and
[1439.86] Frank: synchronized synchronized just in the air time then we had uh last one i think was someone i can't
[1448.5] Frank: remember which one of you it was doing one to time to music as well so that was my poor attempt at
[1455.06] John: doing it to music yeah that was uh it was not poor although i've got to say i came away from
[1462.34] Frank: watching that we're really confused about physics yeah i mean even looking back at the videos that
[1469.14] Frank: people took of that it's like how does that just i mean there's so many questions of how that works
[1474.9] Frank: of the physics of it the how your brain keeps up i mean i can't keep up watching it that how your
[1480.9] Frank: brain keeps up enough to fly it i have no idea yeah so it's really interesting from from our
[1486.74] John: point of view i think that's the thing that kind of draws me to helis is as a pilot when you fly
[1490.66] John: in front of a crowd who haven't seen them fly before and you know helicopters from like scale
[1495.06] John: stuff as soon as they see it go upside down their brain melts it just freezes because they
[1499.46] John: can't quite compute that it's upside down but staying upside down not falling to the ground
[1502.9] John: in a big fireball i think that i sort of get it's all the in-between stuff and the speed at which
[1508.58] Frank: you flush it around but yeah it's flying on its sides that makes no sense that's that's just
[1515.38] John: thanks to unbelievable power and servers and motors that that that kind of helps out how much
[1520.42] John: power have you got in there the motors are running so like the top motors are running
[1524.74] John: for our for our team our competitive team we're using about 11 to 12 horsepower electric motors
[1530.58] John: um running on 12s lifting upon the battery so we run two 6s batteries in series to give us 12s
[1536.74] John: and they're 22.2 volts each so yeah they're pretty tasty and and don't forget about your
[1541.7] Jack: small battery uh for your receiver and fail safe oh yeah so we've got i mean we've got two
[1548.82] John: one 2s pack for our main servos and then a little 2s backup battery just in case
[1554.5] John: stuff goes wrong it kind of saves us our our only kind of parachute if it all goes there's loads of
[1560.02] Jack: parachutes nothing goes wrong never ever never really with the normal drones the uh the fail
[1567.06] Frank: safe tends to be the ground doesn't it yeah with yours you were you were showing off that where
[1573.06] Frank: even when you had no power just dead stick you were still flying it around and doing little flares
[1578.9] Frank: and everything and you were just using the collective pitch of the the helis to to show
[1583.38] Frank: that off and that's that's pretty snazzy as well what's it called auto on or something it's an
[1588.74] John: auto rotation that that's something that derived from like full-scale helicopters so literally it's
[1593.78] John: it's only really happens at the end it only ever happens at the end of a routine or the only
[1597.3] John: other time you need to auto rotation if there's something that's gone wrong if you've lost power
[1601.14] John: so basically what you do is you go up and shut the motor off and you come down just using the
[1604.5] John: weight of the blades and the heavy you pick up head speed and flare at the bottom without any
[1608.02] John: engine power so that's for a real crowd pleaser for like a spectator point of view yeah definitely
[1613.38] Frank: and another thing that sort of really struck me from from watching your displays um and do it
[1618.34] Frank: throughout the day was that you did do you know there was a lot of downtime in between each one
[1623.62] Frank: just doing all your pre-flight checks i think the commentator was saying about that you were
[1628.74] Frank: tightening up all the bolts and things like what what goes into that into that pre-flight checks
[1634.26] John: um it's it's more down to like the rigidity of the head so the heads we use or we specifically use
[1641.3] John: most of our team use i come down to one link so literally we've got 2300 rpm or something uh
[1647.78] John: and it's literally you're coming down to two little plastic ball links on a swash plate
[1651.62] John: and so if there's two little plastic ball links aren't secure enough then if that pops off in
[1655.78] John: flight then you get something called a boom strike and basically what that is is the blades
[1658.5] John: come around and smack the boom so that's why we keep making sure before every flight and after
[1663.06] John: every flight everything's kind of in check and where it needs to be kind of thing um it's just
[1667.54] John: it's just a safety kind of thing like a point of view just kind of like looking over it making
[1671.06] John: sure it's all okay because the stress that the blades go through in flight are ridiculous um
[1676.58] John: i think we recorded the tips of the blades doing like 460 miles an hour 500 so they're getting
[1681.54] John: close to the speed of sound which i think is at like 650 so it's getting yeah that's that's pretty
[1687.78] Frank: impressive and like how much that is another question of how much time do you have to put
[1693.7] Frank: in like every week doing like first of all like practicing keeping your brain able to keep up with
[1698.82] Frank: those things and then also like the maintenance on them surely there must be a lot of maintenance
[1703.46] John: for every hour it's fine um you'd be surprised they're actually okay they're um it's like my
[1710.02] John: particular headies i can build them up at the start of the season and they'll go through the
[1712.82] John: season of only slight maintenance until the end and at the winter i'll strip them down and and
[1716.42] John: look over them um but no like i mean for me i've been flying about four years so it's mostly all
[1723.22] John: my choices and stuff and uh and obviously being part of a great team helps as well um so yeah i
[1729.7] John: know sim simulator really helped me from a young age i think so yeah yeah i mean you'll find a lot
[1737.49] Craig Leong: of the heli pilots um i come i actually come from the 3d heli world um a lot of the heli pilots
[1744.13] Craig Leong: uh do a phenomenal amount of training craig is 3d god craig is 3d god
[1750.29] Craig Leong: i really break my heli god i used i mean i used to do i used to put in about eight to
[1756.85] Craig Leong: ten hours practice and i was just like an amateur competitor um and that was eight to ten hours a
[1763.89] Craig Leong: week i used to be at the shop buying fuel every every every weekend i used to buy by the caseload
[1771.73] Craig Leong: just to try and improve myself so yeah it's quite an interesting side coming from the heli side and
[1778.61] Craig Leong: airplanes and coming all towards ftv and running races and that it's it's quite an interesting

[1972.5] Craig Leong: and good signal so you can fly at maybe 150 meters um in a forest and we were still getting
[1978.74] Jack: a flyable signal so you must use high quality antennas and receivers low yeah i think you know
[1985.86] Luke Bannister: 25 milliwatt on your gorgle rx's isn't the best but soon you put it on a ground station with like
[1990.34] Luke Bannister: a five-ton helical it just comes alive and it's pretty good and you know obviously stay within
[1995.46] Jack: the gain you know and uh obviously you elevate it you know to get out the what is it for nail zone
[2002.34] John: yeah so from the three antennas as long as you've got a couple of good antennas with diversity of

[2235.3] Lee: is one of those things so this is coming we're hoping to get our hands on this the the stuff
[2240.42] Lee: that we that we've been in conversation uh with the guys who've developing it looks really
[2246.74] Lee: interesting and the price point is going to make it very affordable so it shouldn't be you know
[2252.34] Lee: your thousand sixteen hundred dollars it should be an awful lot less than that so it does mean
[2256.9] Lee: that maybe we're going to be able to get our hands on hd fpv within the next kind of four to
[2262.18] Lee: six weeks and give it a go so we'll we'll we'll be getting a unit and trying it out i'm fascinated

[2297.38] Lee: there's a piece of technology in there that's coming out next week from team black sheep but um
[2303.54] Lee: the guys there have said that i'm i can talk about it so they've got a brand new product that's
[2308.58] Lee: coming out called the tbs tango the tbs tango is a new all-in-one fpv uh radio system so um you'll
[2318.58] Lee: be able to see it briefly in the tbs vendetta thing tomorrow so this is the first time we've
[2323.86] Lee: ever talked about it because we've been under nda to this point um it's got a little fpv screen in
[2329.62] Lee: the middle it's got a patch antenna on the back it's got a jr style um socket in the back so that
[2335.14] Lee: you can put whatever transmitter you want in it it's got auto scan it's really quite a cute piece
[2340.9] Lee: of technology so that will be available next week and we'll do a more in-depth review of it but we've
[2347.7] Lee: been playing with it for about four weeks now um and we're pretty impressed to be honest because
[2353.46] Lee: it also has av out and stuff at the bottom as well um the other couple of things that we've
[2358.98] Lee: been goofing around with you may have seen that the the market for the cheaper end of fpv goggles
[2366.98] Lee: so you know things like the quantum uh from hobby king and those kind of big black foam clam shell
[2373.54] Lee: things uh we're getting low to those in right now they seem to be everywhere but there's one
[2379.62] Lee: i'm going to comment on that we're that we're looking forward to getting our hands on you guys
[2383.86] Lee: have probably seen it it's called the um the quantum fact shark genesis have you seen this
[2389.7] Lee: no let me let me post you the link so do you know how with an awful lot of these little clam shell
[2396.58] Lee: cheap and cheerful 4c 50 quid fpv goggles um when you get them you you have to have the eyesight of
[2403.94] Lee: a hawk for it to work with the lenses in i know a lot of the ones that we've had and things like
[2409.22] Lee: the quantum's in particular my eyesight isn't bad but to to use them i have to have the the
[2415.22] Lee: the lens right up against the stop um almost kind of on the bridge of my nose um this thing i've
[2421.7] Lee: just posted the link so if you can post it into the forum for the guys um this is these quantum
[2426.82] Lee: fat shark genesis they have a diversity receiver on the top they have 40 channel uh reception they've
[2434.34] Lee: got hdmi in which is going to be handy if we're going to have to try those that connex pro site
[2439.54] Lee: thing out with them um and interestingly it's quantum and fat shark working together so i was
[2445.62] Lee: talking to greg uh the owner of fat shark about it earlier this week and um he has worked with
[2453.14] Lee: quantum to make sure that all the optics work so this is going to be out pretty soon it's on it's
[2459.54] Lee: on the hobby website at the moment but i'm fascinated to see whether or not this is actually
[2464.66] Lee: going to perform better than some of these chinese cheap and cheerful fpv goggles that we've we've
[2470.26] Lee: been trying out because everyone that we've tried so far has always felt like it maybe had one
[2476.5] Lee: compromise too many in them in terms of the quality the quality of the receiver the image
[2481.86] Lee: the way you know the quality of the fresno lens there's always something that felt like you know
[2486.34] Lee: you weren't getting a great experience um a couple of other things we're also where there's
[2492.18] Lee: going to be a couple of antenna trackers coming out that we're going to be playing with in the
[2496.5] Lee: next couple of weeks um rssi based so that should help i know there was just some talk about using
[2503.94] Lee: 25 milliwatts transmitters with racing the challenge that you have of course if you want
[2510.74] Lee: any decent gain from an antenna is that the more gain you have the more narrow the beam or area of
[2518.5] Lee: reception so one of the things you can do is you can actually have multiple antennas side by side
[2523.7] Lee: and then you they they can overlap in terms of reception so nothing moves and there are lots
[2529.38] Lee: of things out there at the moment in the public areas that you can get hold of and you can make
[2534.26] Lee: these things yourselves but we're aware of a couple that are coming out one will give you
[2538.58] Lee: 180 degree spread of um coverage which will be perfect for fbv racing where you're on the
[2545.3] Lee: sidelines and there's another one that will give you a full 360 view of of everything so you can
[2552.42] Lee: have a series of patch antennas all the way around and pointing up maybe with a little
[2557.78] Lee: circular polarized just for backup which should mean for 25 milliwatts you know we can go a lot
[2563.94] Lee: further and if we do get a little bit off the beaten track we still have the signal so those
[2569.22] Lee: are going to be out very shortly too so again every time we we look at stuff here we there's
[2573.78] Lee: more exciting goofy stuff coming along loads of stuff around firmware i'm just conscious of time
[2579.38] Lee: so i'll just skip a couple of things um there is a kiss update due and i don't know if you guys
[2585.46] Lee: are aware of that so um hall and the gang have been working on a new kiss update which should
[2591.3] Lee: hopefully give us some new features i think they're just going through the final bits and pieces now
[2596.66] Lee: paul's been poorly and one the developers has had a little baby so they've had the hands full so
[2603.14] Lee: keep your eyes open for that one because we have been flying the kiss flight controller since we
[2607.86] Lee: were on last time and i must admit i'm a massive convert i think it's pretty fantastic
[2614.18] Lee: team black sheep has some updates coming as well there's a big update coming for the power cube
[2620.34] Lee: um they are moving away from clean flight by the look of it and they're looking to use beta flight
[2626.82] Lee: as the um system of choice and one of the reasons for that is they want the pass-through for bl heli
[2635.3] Lee: and they're also got an update for the core pro and some of the other bits and bobs as well
[2639.14] Lee: obviously beta flight came out yesterday 2.7 is now out um has anyone looked at the clean flight
[2647.06] Lee: latest release candidate that came out um today as well no i haven't yet so very quickly on that
[2655.3] Lee: that's um 1.13 as bit as uh release candidate one is now out you can get hold of that looking

[2674.98] Lee: yeah go for it okay so this is the first version that will allow us to finally upgrade
[2682.42] Lee: one version of clean flight to another without blowing away all of your configuration so once
[2688.1] Lee: you're on 1.13 all of your configuration data will start to be um kept so when you go from 1.13
[2695.38] Lee: to 1.14 whenever that comes out you know at the moment you have to back up your settings or you
[2700.58] Lee: have to try and remember it or screenshot everything um that will just work which will
[2705.86] Lee: be awesome so thank god for that because i get really bored because the thing is we update
[2710.5] Lee: stuff and test stuff here every time and i have to remember how i've done the gps loads of code

[2750.82] Lee: pretty bulletproof it's on apms picks hawks picks racers it's on cc3ds and cc3 rev 3d revs

[2763.86] Lee: a dominic told me about it i kind of went you are what you're doing that for the reason is
[2769.94] Lee: is that a lot of the hd if you look um if you go and look at the conics hd specs not for this one
[2776.9] Lee: that we've just talked about the 720 the the one that does fun full 1080p zero lag the one that's
[2782.9] Lee: around that's about 1600 right now you'll notice that the on-screen display for those for that
[2790.02] Lee: system uses mav link not msp so part of the reason that mav link is has cropped up in here
[2800.18] Lee: is so that clean flight 1.13 can be used with hd fpv systems out the box
[2812.02] Lee: the other cool thing is finally clean flight gets bl heli pass-through support oh at last praise
[2819.54] Jack: the lord and simon k just bl heli for now let's don't go oh come on oh whoa can't sit on it here

[2832.26] Lee: on in beta flight and everybody has absolutely loved it and finally we're going to get it in
[2837.38] Lee: clean flight for those of you that like clean flight so apart from that there's some performance
[2842.1] Lee: optimizations there's a new task scheduler uh there's some additional hardware support so
[2846.82] Lee: the vortex pro has um hardware support they're going back to clean flight for there so that's
[2852.82] Lee: that's the the main stuff interestingly because while i had dominick i kind of picked his brains
[2858.9] Lee: and said so i mean you guys had boris on last week i said what's going on with beta flight
[2864.34] Lee: and clean flight and you know because as boris said last week you know beta flight was first
[2869.78] Lee: designed as a test bed for the things that he wanted to do um and yet it's still around
[2875.86] Lee: uh you know the word from dominick is very much that he is um working with boris to take on all
[2882.98] Lee: the things that are working really well in beta flight back in and those will appear in 1.14 so
[2890.74] Lee: not the one that's currently in release candidate which is 1.13 1.14 will start to pick up and take
[2896.82] Lee: some of the code back that's currently uh now mature and tested in beta flight yeah so i think
[2903.14] Lee: we all just need to keep an eye on that because it would be nice to have some what one or two less
[2908.5] Lee: versions of flight because i think every time i look at github there's another fork i think
[2912.74] Lee: there's about over 100 forks of the different flights now and i know for me supporting people
[2918.5] Lee: on places like youtube and others it's just so bloody complicated for everybody and everyone
[2923.3] Lee: gets confused so that in in terms you know for me very quick rundown in the we've got four minutes

[2940.42] Lee: the headlines for me are going to be you know having a look at that connec system i think

[2948.34] Lee: to secrecy um so we'll be playing with that and also getting hold of some of these um low cost
[2956.74] Lee: goggles that are actually have manufacturers involved that really at no one understand fpv
[2962.66] Lee: it may be going to allow us to get our hands on a decent set of goggles that isn't going to break

[2992.66] John: as some sort of platform for you to get get some help yeah most confusing version of ebay ever
[2999.3] Jack: yeah ever just send stuff to him go on jet no carry on do you want to tell them what happened
[3006.42] Lee: yeah i was just going to explain yeah so um on the vendetta when you actually build it
[3011.06] Lee: the way it works is that you're too aerial there's two like halls that go through this
[3015.3] Lee: wonderful little chassis in the middle and they stick out the top and we we put an xsr in it a
[3020.66] Lee: great that great little new receiver from fr sky and as you know one of the antennas is to hear
[3026.1] Lee: the radio and receive things and the other antenna is to transmit the telemetry back down to the
[3030.34] Lee: tranis unfortunately if you get them the wrong way around the the antenna that's transmitting
[3035.22] Lee: the telemetry is right by the wire that connects the camera to the um video transmitter and on
[3042.66] Lee: screen display so you get all this wacky rolling distortion so typically muppet boy here actually
[3050.02] Lee: installs it that way around and of course i did that on purpose really so i could show the problem
[3053.94] Lee: to the subscribers but um i thought well i need some video of that of how bad it is
[3061.3] Lee: but the um the problem is is that the distortion was so bad i got to the edge of my limit because
[3068.66] Lee: i was flying on 25 milliwatts but staying legal and um i lost the signal altogether because it
[3074.74] Lee: was so bad and distorted anyway so i dumped the throttle it landed one of the motors was by a
[3080.18] Lee: clumper grass and couldn't turn properly and um speaking to trappy after four seconds the motor
[3086.9] Lee: acts as a very motor shaped fuse for the esc so the esc absolutely fine the motor cooked i showed
[3095.06] Lee: jacket before you you can turn it by hand but you have to use a lot of force so um so yeah i
[3101.78] Lee: managed to completely destroy one motor of a tbs vendetta that's my claim to fave for this week
[3108.26] Lee: well we still have a good crash story oh mate i said well i could come on every week and give
[3113.14] Lee: you a crash story it's um it's an occupational hazard eric's just asked me on the thing about
[3120.02] Lee: does the hd stuff work with regular 5.8 um i didn't mention that um and eric that's a great
[3126.66] Lee: question yes it does the way it works is it's a little bit different from 5.8 it uses frequency
[3134.58] Lee: hopping and parts of the spectrum we can't access with traditional fpv systems the channels are not
[3140.98] Lee: exactly they don't work the same as traditional fpv um they're allocated using an app on a phone
[3147.7] Lee: or an android tablet so it's quite quite clever and the um the way it works is that if somebody
[3153.54] Lee: then fires up an old traditional analog fpv system this is all alleged caveat caveat by
[3159.22] Lee: the way because we haven't tried it yet but this is what speaking to the developers they're telling
[3163.06] Lee: me um if somebody fires up a traditional analog system the the digital system still works and the
[3169.22] Lee: analog system still does now that sounds like a fantastic test to do um and if any of it does
[3174.9] Lee: work like that that would be awesome because okay we've got it we've got to call it now unfortunately
