After two big events on the same weekend in the UK, the crew catch up with Juli FPV of FPVNutz.

[0.0] (Sponsors): Elementary recovered. You're listening to Let's Drone Out from poweringon.co.uk.
[7.81] (Sponsors): This episode sponsored by Radio C for all your drone related needs home of the drone labs batteries.
[14.29] Frank: Good evening and welcome to Let's Drone Out. I am Andrew and with me here this evening we have Jay.
[23.81] Frank: Ah hello. We have Adam. Hello. We have Ed. Good evening.
[32.21] Frank: And we have Yulie. Hello. There we go. So I will start off this evening by saying that
[42.61] Frank: Jack has had to step out because this evening he has too much stuff in between him and any way
[50.05] Frank: of communicating with us so he's currently sorting his piles of stuff away so that he can
[55.65] Frank: actually communicate with us so maybe he'll get bored of that and find a way but in the meantime
[62.13] Frank: you have us to talk to on Let's Drone Out. We are live on poweringon.co.uk so you can join in
[74.69] Frank: the chat on there. You can also have a look at our canvas which is currently showing a very nice
[80.05] Frank: Let's Drone Out animation that's going between our two little logos. Yeah. Production value.
[88.29] Frank: Thank you very much. But yeah so last weekend was quite a big weekend. There was
[97.73] Frank: Weston Park which Yulie was at and there was Sumner's Ponds. Me and Tony are out although Tony
[107.49] Frank: isn't around so I don't know what he's doing but yeah I know a few of you Jay, Adam, Ed you wanted
[115.09] Frank: to come to Sumner's Ponds but couldn't so I will fill you in on it a bit. So for people who...
[122.69] Adam: Yeah I was especially pissed off about it because I managed to break my arm
[126.53] Adam: or with the help of a motorist last week and not being able to do anything much. What did you do
[133.25] Adam: or what happened to you to get your arm broken? I was cycling along and a vehicle turned left
[139.25] Adam: across me without checking to see whether I was there or not. And you were? They sure weren't aiming
[144.93] Adam: for you. Or it was it was the least effectual assassin in a black box. To me it happened the
[153.97] Frank: same. I almost broke my arm. It's annoying isn't it? Yeah. You know I think to come off in a fight
[164.45] Frank: with a car with only a broken arm. It's not too bad. That's how I'm choosing to look at it. Yeah
[171.41] Adam: you know worst things could have happened. Yeah definitely stay positive. But it is you know I
[177.97] Frank: use both my hands when flying. Yeah so couldn't really do much if you had come to Sumner's Ponds.
[185.33] Adam: You could sit around and watch us I guess. Yeah I couldn't drive there either so. Hang on hang
[190.69] Adam: on there's that guy on that Roto Riot film a month or so back who flew with one hand.
[195.73] Juli: Yeah that is true. Time to up your game. Yeah I mean you haven't flown at all even with the
[201.17] Adam: cast and I'm sure you could. You should go one better and fly with your foot.
[205.97] Adam: That's nice. Try your nose. I think I could fly one-handed because you'd just
[212.45] Adam: you'd move your other hand you'd move the controller so it was comfortable you know rest
[216.37] Adam: against my belly but it's more driving. I feel nervous about gears. If not you can do some
[223.33] Juli: autonomous flying with your app on one of your drones. That's true yeah. Otherwise then it's
[229.33] Juli: cheating. Yeah mission planning. So is it cheating? Yeah yeah you're right it's cheating. It serves a
[238.37] Juli: purpose sometimes there are uses to that sort of stuff but it's not flying is it. Well it is flying.
[244.29] Adam: It's flying but you're not flying it. Yes it stops being a skill and starts becoming a
[251.73] Adam: I don't know a skill more in the GCSE sense of it. But I've heard on a great
[256.37] Juli: and that your 250 is still in pieces Adam. Are you getting it? Yeah. Was it cycling with you
[262.69] Adam: at the time? No no it hasn't been built. Yeah there were there were a couple of inspires
[272.86] Frank: at someone's ponds at least. There was a one that Gareth brought yeah and there was also one
[279.98] Frank: over in the radio controlled car section when they had massive one fifth scale
[288.54] Frank: Baja buggies zooming up ramps and going a good 30 foot in the air or something. That would have
[294.7] Adam: been awesome. Yeah yeah yeah but they were also coming and buzzing. I thought you said someone in
[299.02] Adam: the radio control car section I was thinking had they become confused as to what it was.
[305.82] Frank: But yeah so Summer's Ponds has is a big model show like lots of radio controlled models
[312.78] Frank: in this glamping site. It's a very kind of very nice high quality grass around some fishing ponds.
[319.9] Adam: I've had one of those middle class teepee things that they have. I'm pretty sure you could have
[325.1] Frank: done. It was definitely you know it's very nice. A yurt that's it. If you're gonna go camping go
[332.54] Frank: somewhere where they have rainforest noises playing in the toilet in the shower block.
[339.82] Adam: You always get a sort of running water thing in the shower block anyway.
[344.06] Frank: But this was proper full-on toucans and everything. Wow that is surprisingly classy. Yeah.
[350.46] Juli: Is there much weather problems to stop flying or was it pretty much?
[355.1] Frank: To begin with when we were first going there there was a lot of rain on all the roads.
[363.02] Frank: It was just really really wet but when we got there they were kind enough to be dumping some
[369.5] Frank: pea shingle and some sawdust and all sorts of stuff in the various muddy craters that were formed
[377.18] Frank: on the drive from the the road to the camp site so that we could actually get there nice and
[383.1] Frank: smoothly and it was all very well. Festival tactics. Yeah. It was the same sort of they use
[388.62] Frank: when people vomit too much at school. You know I do think that someone responds with the uh
[393.42] Frank: about 80 year old RC boats. You know it's definitely the next Glastonbury.
[401.02] Frank: The RC Glastonbury. Yeah definitely. Yeah they've got all sorts of things there so they've got the
[409.1] Frank: the big ponds full of uh well full of fish but also full of boats and they have their big demos
[415.26] Frank: of exclusive reenactments with ships falling in half and then being fished out and put back
[421.9] Frank: together again. They've got their their RC cars as I said doing massive jumps off ramps and doing
[430.22] Frank: racing constantly. It's just absolutely had two circuits and it was just both of them going doing
[437.82] Frank: something all the time. It was very very loud if you went anywhere near there and there was us
[443.98] Frank: obviously also making noise. So we had the BFP VRA hoops and the air gates and things and flags
[455.58] Frank: and stuff and we were all going around there. We also had there was also a yacht pond which Carlos
[466.78] Frank: managed to land an action man in which is impressive because it was the other side of
[472.7] Frank: the forest from us. So yeah that was good. Can we take a brief moment just to give Carlos a round
[479.9] Adam: of applause for his costume at some of this pond. I wasn't there but the photos on facebook came
[484.38] Frank: through. Yeah I'll put it up on the canvas for anyone who is listening. Absolutely amazing.
[492.7] Frank: So for people not able to see the canvas because they're either in podcast land or just listening
[499.18] Frank: to us somehow else maybe on tune in which we're now on as well yeah. On the canvas we have the
[506.94] Frank: image of Carlos in his proper proper full regalia flight suit. Think maverick, think top gun. Yeah
[517.02] Adam: gas mask and everything. Yeah I think that little parachute dude was his goose wasn't it.
[524.06] Frank: Yeah so he's got his oxygen mask he's got his massive like altitude altimeter yeah can't speak
[531.1] Frank: he's got everything yeah it does look like he's crash landed somewhere nearby and just
[539.34] Frank: wandered in but yeah he was flying some really amazing stuff he was definitely the center point
[547.02] Frank: of the entertainment because he had his his action man which he'd grafted an fpv camera
[555.66] Frank: into its face so you saw the first person view of the action man he had an enormous
[563.34] Frank: parafoil parachute for the action man and some servos for his arms and you can possibly see
[570.7] Frank: where this is going you can then have the so he had the the action man strapped to the bottom of
[579.18] Frank: his 250 quad I think it was maybe a bit larger than that and just has his fpv on his quad fpv
[587.18] Frank: on his uh on his action man flying it up way up high took a few attempts to get the the packing
[594.54] Frank: of the parachute right uh before you know the action man actually had a parachute and not just
[601.58] Frank: a streamer uh but eventually it did finally have this glorious canopy above it
[609.58] Frank: and uh drifted over far over a forest and we were all like oh no not into the forest and then it
[616.3] Frank: managed to clear the forest and was going into this nice big patch of grass and then just managed
[623.1] Frank: to land in the pond uh but it's all right he did survive he dried out and he's still working as
[629.9] Frank: far as i know so i'm sure that will make some appearances somewhere else yeah so there must be
[636.06] Juli: some youtube videos of all these things i'm gonna have to check them out because it's not on facebook
[640.14] Juli: yeah everyone's got these things there in the recording so it's sweet yeah the other thing
[644.94] Frank: that that carlos was showing off after the public had left um was his bang bang google
[651.66] Frank: uh close his uh runkam owl 2 camera i think it was an owl 2 owl plus something like that owl camera
[662.38] Frank: and uh yeah so to to line up the story greer had heard that carlos had one with him
[671.74] Frank: and so was pushing carlos to show it off the camera was not attached to anything you know
[677.74] Frank: it's just in it's nicely in its box ready to be installed on something
[682.06] Frank: uh and no no put it on something try it out try it out so uh eventually they were
[690.7] Frank: last minute in the dark soldering stuff good hot gluing stuff trying to get it onto his bonsai
[697.42] Frank: um the the small little fpv wing which is impossible to glue anything to because of
[703.5] Frank: whatever material they've made that from they managed to get that glued on launched it just at
[711.02] Frank: a dusk there was barely any light and uh we're all looking through the screens well the few of us
[717.66] Frank: that were standing there looking through the screens and seeing the amazing detail and colors
[722.94] Frank: and everything on this very low light camera because it is extremely low light you could see
[727.66] Frank: detail in everything um he was flying around the knife edge between some trees going and buzzing
[737.34] Frank: some tents and so everyone in those all the tents was all going how is anyone flying in that
[744.38] Frank: turning on their goggles and screens and having a look through and then thinking because it's
[749.18] Frank: all in black and white when it gets really dark it looks just like a thermal imaging camera a
[755.1] Frank: flare camera or something like that so everyone's running over to find who's flying this thing and
[759.66] Frank: who's got this amazing military equipment because uh you know Carlos in that gear as well does give
[765.42] Frank: that impression yeah uh and then yeah so we started off with a few people standing around
[771.9] Frank: watching and ended up with a massive crowd of people coming out of all the tents emerging
[776.14] Frank: and standing around and he landed it dead in front of us so definitely uh props to Carlos for
[783.18] Frank: for his amazing flying that weekend yeah you were building that up as if it was going to
[787.26] Adam: be a crash story but it was a happy landing and impressed crowd story yeah it's occasionally
[792.3] Frank: that happens and it's nice when it happens and we should celebrate those times and the celebrity
[798.78] Frank: characters yeah he's definitely the celebrity of the weekends he also managed to bring a radar gun
[807.1] Frank: so people were doing using the the long straight of the course to do um speed trials
[815.58] Frank: and the maximum anyone got up to and it was quite a small distance to actually run up to anything
[823.74] Frank: was Dave Bailey with his micsuko and managed to get 77 miles an hour
[831.82] Frank: which is not nothing is it no that's that's a fair old speed so yeah that was what everyone was
[841.18] Frank: trying to beat him on he ended up beating himself it was he was 74 to begin with and he got 77 by
[847.42] Frank: the end of the weekend so i don't think anyone got up to his first record i think so he's keeping
[855.74] Frank: himself well ahead um well it sounds like it was a lot of fun yeah it was a good weekend
[864.7] Adam: i know it's uh thomas greer in your story there has lost his first name i don't know how
[869.9] Frank: we just call him greer now yeah well it's it's the uh it's kind of onomatopoeic or something
[876.14] Adam: it just suits him yeah i know what you mean
[882.86] Frank: but yeah so because we were all or those of us from the podcast and a few other people that
[888.62] Frank: we know who aren't serious racers we're we're a bit more casual than that so we went at western
[895.42] Frank: park but uly you were at western park i believe uh how was that did you did you get on all right
[904.78] Juli: was it all nice and yeah it was a great event and uh honestly i haven't thought that it was
[913.5] Juli: that big because yeah i've never heard about it because yeah i have no i had no idea and yeah
[921.34] Juli: there were planes there were cars there were even boats um and then the great fpv line
[928.3] Juli: which got yeah quite big and many spectators we had lots of fun and at least we had nice weather
[937.34] Juli: or at least no rain so it was sunny and cloudy at the same time um yeah it was great to meet
[945.74] Juli: all those people because normally i raised in germany and you know the germans and now i know
[952.62] Juli: a lot of english people and it was yeah very nice atmosphere there just like festival very much yeah
[961.98] Juli: how did you get on with the racing uly well i was not very lucky with uh at the weekend
[971.98] Juli: well it was very very perfectly organized everything that's great the course i saw um
[978.7] Adam: i caught gary kent's lap uh which he posted on facebook and the course looked incredible and
[985.66] Adam: there was it's really interesting turns and yeah sort of thing i'd really like to give a
[991.26] Adam: go myself and what from a first person's point of view what was it like going around that
[996.3] Juli: it was crazy there was there was one turn i hated it it was like it wasn't like my pain
[1003.98] Juli: gate and every lap we had a we had a yeah a little gate and then we had to go up to the high gate
[1011.18] Juli: yeah do a turn to the right and then there was another gate and it was very hard because there
[1018.38] Juli: were trees everywhere um so yeah you had yeah the choice trees ground or gate
[1025.9] Adam: uh what was the most popular choice of the day uly uh normally i got through the gate yes
[1035.42] Juli: but yeah and the last training heat in the evening um yeah it was uh i got a bit i got
[1044.51] Juli: a bit nervous because um i had fork in my goggles because uh yeah i forgot to to put my fan on
[1052.11] Juli: um and i couldn't hardly see and then i crashed into the to the high gate crashed into the ground
[1058.99] Juli: and then i had a broken arm on my quad and i had no spare so yep we had to fix it with super glue
[1069.23] Juli: in the car wow that's awesome but i was very lucky because i had such a great technical support
[1076.83] Juli: for my team which was there and i fixed my quad with super glue and everybody was yeah thinking
[1083.87] Juli: about the best solution for me um yep and then we we fixed it with super glue so yeah i raced with
[1091.23] Juli: the super glued arm on saturday you have to strengthen the super glue joint with another
[1097.47] Juli: piece over the top like what was the bit the utah what was the decision in the end that
[1101.71] Juli: fixed it because that's probably a useful thing to know well it wasn't it was not totally broken
[1108.19] Juli: so we so we could put the super glue into the fibers and then so it was just the fibers put
[1114.51] Juli: back together knitted together with super yeah yeah wow could it flew all right yeah it was all
[1121.95] Juli: right yeah that's good well on sunday when the last crash it was totally done but yeah
[1127.15] Juli: time for a new trailer so on sunday i flew like yeah a bit carefully to not break it and there was
[1135.95] Juli: yeah so the parent gate was even worse so yeah what frame do you fly uh i have a evil beast
[1145.15] Juli: from arts fantasy is the german company and they customize it with uh pink foil
[1152.11] Juli: so that everybody knows oh that's the that's julie's quad yeah yep yeah that's great
[1162.91] Frank: i've seen also on facebook there was a lot of night flying as well it looked like a really
[1168.83] Juli: good night flying course that you had yeah it was actually yeah it was really nice well i was fixing
[1175.23] Juli: my quad at that time oh no so i couldn't fly there i had to fix it and um yeah but we had a
[1184.67] Juli: big screen to to look at also for the spectators so i could see how insane and cool the night flying
[1191.79] Frank: was yeah did you get to was it just friday night that the night flying was on then or did you get
[1200.83] Juli: also on saturday but i yeah i didn't want you to break my quad yeah i guess that's true and when
[1209.39] Juli: night flying it's yeah it's a bit more dangerous to to break it because my pain gain was quite
[1217.47] Juli: dark so uh yeah i was afraid to crash into it again yeah yeah so you mentioned your your team
[1227.87] Frank: um is that x-blades is that x-blades with you there yeah when i was a western tiger was with
[1235.15] Frank: x-blades there yeah that's that's mainly what first brought you up on my radar was hearing about you
[1245.71] Frank: at um going to the x-blades or going with x-blades to the to the wembley event when you're flying
[1253.71] Frank: around wembley with i think while com was doing an event there lots of fpv racing around the arena
[1262.75] Juli: yeah that was my my first event with the x-blades ah there you go yeah
[1270.03] Juli: there was asked to to join them just i don't know the date it was like two weeks before dubai
[1276.19] Juli: or something um yes and then in april there was the wembley went and i went there with the x-blades
[1288.11] Juli: it was awesome i met all the team all my team members and yeah they welcomed me very nicely
[1297.23] Adam: how did they how did they uh deal with a girl because i think people looking on fpv look at
[1303.63] Adam: it and see it's just a sea of blokes and the um misconception can be a group of nerds and a group
[1310.75] Adam: of geeks and uh yeah either you're with us or uh or is it cool you know the whole whole experience
[1319.31] Adam: for you and it must be very male heavy from your point of view well i i don't find it nerdy i don't
[1327.07] Juli: i think it's cool because people are in the community are talking to each other are outside
[1334.99] Adam: are flying yeah have you ever you know just draft any more girls into the sport because i know jack
[1341.55] Adam: has certainly put a call out for girls to come and join in just to just to calm the testosterone down
[1348.35] Adam: not not just because you'd like to meet them
[1354.03] Frank: i think personally the the interest is that we you know fpv is always likened to video games
[1361.23] Frank: and video games um you know have been very male dominated for many years but they the video games
[1370.51] Frank: industry has been working very hard and is now at the point where it's pretty much 50 50 in terms
[1378.03] Frank: of consumers of video games as a whole and maybe some genres are more male dominated than others
[1384.99] Frank: but as a whole the video games industry the consumers are pretty much 50 50 male female but
[1391.31] Adam: in fpv flying i think though fpv is going to be a bit of a different case because the reason that
[1397.71] Adam: games has leveled out has got much more to do with the fact that games changed from being
[1403.87] Adam: lots of teenage boys sitting at home shooting each other on you know xboxers to widening to
[1410.59] Adam: include all of the games that you can get for your phone and those games are much less aggressively
[1417.31] Adam: you know weird teenage boys but no i think the difference i think also comes from the
[1422.11] Juli: building of it and that's why you probably have more men predominantly in the start but it's
[1426.59] Juli: still a fun thing and it's easier now to get a hold of these things and fly them and more
[1430.51] Juli: accessible so yeah i think you will see a ship slowly but surely so you know into the fpv flying
[1438.59] Juli: particularly as long as ever has the right attitude yeah that's true i'm very happy to be
[1447.31] Juli: with all the guys i don't know i'm very used to it because i always had more male friends than female
[1453.39] Juli: friends um i'll always love to play mario kart on nintendo or classic yeah i always love love
[1463.39] Juli: computer games too um yeah well my maybe um yeah the guys can't restrain and hold in the door
[1474.75] Juli: for me or trying to be good man i don't want to know with them um but when it comes to racing
[1480.99] Juli: they don't show consideration for being a girl so um once the goggles are on there's a little
[1489.95] Juli: difference in the genders i think it's a very fair point because men and women have both the same
[1496.43] Juli: physical conditions for the sport um so i'm totally against doing a female anime league or something
[1504.27] Juli: like that they should all fly together and against each other because there's no difference and i
[1509.95] Juli: don't like this like okay when when it's like football i can understand that they can't play
[1515.71] Juli: together because yeah females are maybe a bit slower running than men but um yeah in our hobby
[1526.59] Juli: there's no difference between the genders so yeah and physical general uh fitness even you know
[1534.03] Juli: it's one of those unique sports yeah yeah in our sport it it's it's more a brain sport
[1540.99] Adam: yeah and and hand-eye coordination yeah yeah which of course does beg the question why women don't
[1548.19] Adam: race against men in formula one but let's not no there's a huge physical huge physical fitness
[1554.91] Adam: requirement in formula one it's it's mental um and rallying and all that yeah well rallying
[1561.15] Adam: not so much but if you've ever looked into the fitness regimes it's not that gut one couldn't
[1566.67] Adam: do it um i just think it's only been i would say the last 20 years that you've seen um women's uh
[1577.07] Adam: peak fitness levels in sports like ufc uh very you know combat sports what haven't you seen girls
[1584.27] Adam: pushing the absolute boundaries and i wouldn't want to get in the ring with them and it's only
[1588.91] Adam: now that the mentality is starting to switch um and i think probably another 10 years away before
[1596.03] Adam: formula one is you know every other seat is equal in gender um but yeah it's it's the same with
[1604.83] Juli: professions there are a few female engineers or something because yeah they just started
[1611.71] Juli: a few years ago to get into that so um and as fpv flying is quite unknown in
[1620.75] Juli: or fpv racing in public so yeah there are a few men also if you see
[1628.75] Juli: how many people live in europe and how many people do fpv racing then yeah so how did you
[1636.35] Juli: then it's quite unknown so yeah many females may not know about it how did you get started and
[1644.48] Juli: how long you been flying um i started in october last year so um it all started with my brother
[1654.4] Juli: because he started flying with um a phantom
[1659.36] Juli: just for fun and he was very proud of his little drone and yeah showed me how to fly and
[1667.92] Juli: well he he got up took a photo and then yeah that was it and i was a bit bored about it
[1677.28] Juli: i think they are grateful for filming and things yeah not full of flying not full of flying
[1682.8] Juli: experience um but he was pretty well informed about drones and then he told me about racing
[1689.28] Juli: and fpv um my boat was also with us um so we spent like two days watching fpv videos
[1699.44] Juli: people racing people doing freestyle like metal denny and skits on steel um
[1707.28] Juli: yeah and then my brother and i started um to build a quad so we ordered a building kit and
[1714.96] Juli: built it via youtube um yeah and yeah we didn't know actually how to fly and what's
[1727.12] Juli: possible with it so on facebook we contacted a local team a team clapocopter and they were
[1736.96] Juli: very friendly and open minded and they just invited us to their place and they showed us
[1745.36] Juli: how to race and what's possible with the quad from yeah my interest was a reason for it
[1753.04] Juli: i think you touched on it earlier with the community and the community is quite uh
[1756.96] Juli: not only is it um that people can compete at levels and fly these things regardless of their
[1762.16] Juli: physical ability but also the community is very fostering to newcomers so yeah um so this
[1768.56] Juli: club then that's where you started racing uh yeah that's where my interest for racing was risen
[1776.98] Juli: um well i first had to start to learn how to fly
[1784.74] Juli: well it took some weeks um but yeah then we we started to to set up courses and gates and
[1793.7] Juli: build flags so we have self-made flags and self-made gates just to practice um
[1801.79] Juli: yeah and so we used so we raced with friends on weekends that was it and now you're flying
[1807.87] Juli: internationally yep yeah well normally um i wanted to be on my first race
[1817.71] Juli: i was a german race in and you know it was in may it was planned to be my first race
[1826.43] Juli: so the first time to to fly with spectators and other guys but then the exploits came and i had
[1834.67] Juli: to go to Wembley first so Wembley was my first event and the first time i flew with um people
[1843.71] Juli: i didn't know and at a place i didn't know that's a baptism a fire definitely yeah
[1851.79] Juli: i think you all can imagine how nervous i was
[1856.83] Juli: yeah that was quite hard yeah but i managed it without crashing and without destroying the
[1862.99] Juli: Wembley stadium and we're all very grateful yeah thank you um so i'm trying to resist any of the
[1873.95] Juli: obvious jokes about Germans and Wembley yeah yeah i i posted a photo on facebook and
[1881.79] Juli: some guys that's the only time we like a German at Wembley
[1886.67] Juli: yeah i'm very glad that you were coming with me there
[1898.02] Frank: well we're very glad that you came into the the community at that time so that you could be there
[1903.62] Frank: because that was uh definitely how yeah as i said before how you got onto our radars um
[1910.58] Frank: for anyone that doesn't know ule fpv is on on youtube i think your yeah yeah your youtube
[1917.06] Frank: channel is ule fpv yeah um you got facebook for all the guys who don't know how it's bad it's like
[1923.14] Frank: julie fpv yeah so j-u-l-i um fpv and same on the facebook um but we have shared your page i think
[1934.42] Frank: on our facebook so if anyone's found our facebook then they can also find yours and if they find
[1938.5] Frank: yours they can help you find your youtube as well yeah um i was just going to actually backtrack a
[1950.26] Frank: bit because i missed an opportunity to introduce a bit of news that we've got um when we were talking
[1956.5] Frank: about video games and that is that in Watch Dogs 2 which is you know Watch Dogs 1 was quite a big
[1965.06] Frank: video game in Watch Dogs 2 there are going to be drones so if anyone doesn't know it's a kind of
[1970.82] Frank: uh dystopian police state future technology hacking type video game type video game i
[1982.1] Adam: don't know if there's a bit it was a big uh triple a title on playstation possibly xbox one
[1987.86] Adam: that you um you know you go around solving crimes and occasionally having to solve hacking related
[1995.3] Adam: queer you know but weird puzzles a bit like rubik's puzzles which are in some way related to hacking
[2002.02] Adam: so it makes logical sense that you would extend that by controlling a device like a drone um i've
[2008.66] Adam: got to say it was quite a bland ubisoft game not i hope it's better than the last one obviously
[2015.14] Frank: good enough to earn a sequel though and one with drones you know how can you go wrong
[2022.82] Frank: while we're on the topic of news because i've pushed it there uh another piece of news that
[2027.62] Frank: we have is that the uh i just think this is the one that ed found a while ago is that the FAA
[2034.66] Frank: drone regulations uh are being brought in line well they're being changed a bit but it's going
[2041.22] Frank: to be pretty much brought in line with the way we're doing things in the uk which is that uh
[2048.02] Frank: to do commercial drone flying you don't need a whole pilot's license like a proper pilot's license
[2054.74] Frank: but you can do you know equivalent of a permission for aerial work um by just proving your competence
[2063.46] Frank: either by doing a course or that sort of thing um worst kept secret in the industry that isn't
[2069.46] Frank: at the FAA we're jealous of our rules yeah well you know we've had uh i've said this before but
[2077.78] Frank: i think we were benefited from not having somewhere like Arizona to put all the remotely
[2083.06] Frank: piloted vehicles when they were being tested by the military that we had to right think about it
[2089.06] Adam: early on um also it has to be said that the the European association of civilization authorities
[2094.98] Adam: has always been very forward-looking um which of course the CAA is a member yeah and their roadmap
[2100.82] Juli: is actually much more cargo based post delivery blah blah blah in the future yep so for people
[2109.22] Frank: listening in the us because there are a lot of people that listen to this in the us i don't know
[2113.78] Frank: who you are or where you are uh but thank you for listening that hopefully you can get flying a bit
[2121.3] Frank: more happily because they're going to start actually sorting your regulations out a bit
[2125.54] Frank: more sensibly um so yeah some good news um yeah on uh on previous news i think the last time was
[2134.82] Adam: on i was uh slightly ranting about the um HD uh FPV stuff do we know anyone who's phoned it yet
[2142.42] Frank: do we have any updates is it latency free it's pretty close i mean it's milliseconds
[2151.3] Frank: so compared to you know the latency on the actual radio and flight controller and everything else
[2161.62] Adam: i don't think it's yeah who was on the show because they were being very positive about it
[2166.58] Frank: uh i think that was painless talking about it painless 360 so i can stop stressing about it
[2173.22] Adam: is that what we're saying we are saying that yeah excellent one another listen to the back
[2180.42] Frank: it's on itunes yes yes you can catch all our old episodes on soundcloud itunes stitcher
[2188.34] Frank: mixed clouds um more things and if you are interested in listening on one of those and
[2194.9] Juli: you want to join us in the chat room you can go to poweringon.co.uk yes we record this live on
[2200.34] Frank: poweringon.co.uk every thursday from 8 to 9 pm UK time so you can join in the chat i actually
[2209.06] Frank: have to admit i have only just remembered that we have a chat so i haven't been checking it
[2213.7] Adam: so sorry hey have you seen who's been in there we can say a big shout out to brighten till i fly
[2220.9] Adam: has he tied it up yeah are you tired yet jack well one last piece of news is that they're
[2226.98] Juli: starting to smash drones into simulated aircraft and testing to see what happens really yeah it's
[2232.58] Juli: time so they're simulating it so well no they're doing simulated and air cannons to do this sort
[2239.62] Juli: of uh impact frozen chickens and things like just a motor because the motor is essentially one small
[2245.62] Juli: clump of metal isn't it so if that did separate what can that do um later in the next few months
[2253.38] Adam: i'd say or next month or two it just sounds like someone is bored somewhere and when can we get
[2259.46] Adam: someone to pay us to to launch projectiles at large objects and record the data you need to
[2267.78] Adam: someone to give you an 80 million dollar jet as well so you have to like you have to be bored but
[2272.82] Juli: very convincing this is the skill that i need airliners isn't it and uh you know big bowing
[2279.94] Juli: jets in their bus and whatnot so that's what that's the initial testing that'll take place
[2284.66] Juli: because military flying jets well yeah they're all over wales so so far we've only really tried
[2291.38] Adam: it with a plastic bag and that doesn't tell you anything well it's interesting to find out what
[2297.54] Juli: they say yeah because hopefully it's impartial research and there's not been much research on
[2301.94] Juli: the modern technology we've only done frozen chickens before so i've got to i've got to ask
[2307.3] Adam: yuli um what's what's the price like in germany for all this do you get do you guys get as
[2312.5] Juli: as much of a hard time as we do over here yeah i mean uh there's not that much press
[2322.1] Juli: but if there's press it's about phantoms uh spying out people in the garden
[2327.46] Juli: oh yeah so it's always airports here yeah it's always the bad drones that are spying and um
[2335.86] Frank: yeah so do you then get to show people what you actually see through the goggles and go like
[2343.1] Frank: well good luck spying with these yeah yeah that's the point yeah it's easy to do that
[2349.02] Adam: from a one-to-one basis it's tricky when the newspapers come out isn't it to go and show
[2352.7] Adam: everyone yeah but the thing is guys we're not going to be able to use that excuse of you can't
[2357.26] Adam: see much soon because that hd stuff is going to become more affordable and we'll have a crystal
[2361.9] Adam: clear image and we'll go yeah great i can see everything yeah and under the other end of the
[2367.02] Adam: scale dji are telling everyone about the follow focus slash zoom lens adapters and you know zoom
[2373.5] Adam: lenses are exactly the problem aren't they yeah it's not helping much dji stop it stop developing
[2379.66] Adam: leave it where it is
[2383.1] Juli: it was funny in the time when when i was pressed this thing with the plastic bag and the
[2388.94] Juli: and the plane in london there was a time i was at wendley and the story was also here and pressed
[2394.86] Juli: in germany you know everybody who knew that i was in london flying my my quad and we hung
[2401.1] Juli: everybody was like oh did you crash into that plane it wasn't that
[2404.62] Adam: it was julie yeah yeah julie fpv she's attacking airports yeah
[2418.14] Frank: oh dear yeah so what what are the events like in germany do you have a lot of events to go to
[2425.74] Frank: obviously there was the one that you left to come over to wendley but have you had much
[2430.7] Frank: other opportunities i mean do you have lots of leagues or do you have lots of local events or
[2435.9] Juli: what's what we have no leagues like official leagues or something but this year we have
[2443.26] Juli: a lot of little races and because the german the german nationals will be quite big and
[2451.34] Juli: so many people are interested in competing there we have qualifying events for this the german
[2457.02] Juli: nationals yeah so may we uh in may i was at a event event that was qualifier for that
[2465.9] Juli: and next week i'm going to a race in eastern germany this will also be a qualifier for
[2473.5] Juli: for the german nationals in bexper it's always called bexper i don't know if you know that
[2479.9] Juli: i don't know so yes there are a lot of of race events how do you spell bexper
[2488.14] Juli: i was b-e-x-b-a-c-h
[2493.74] Frank: ah there we go i will i will look up about that to find out yeah yeah the organizer
[2502.62] Juli: rose vents is called he's also a delegate from ursa it's like the german delegate for ursa for
[2511.9] Juli: yeah for managing all those things and to to get this event also to be qualified for a european
[2519.18] Adam: cup ah yeah we'll send gary ken over please not
[2528.86] Adam: he's done france i'm sure you can just move across the border
[2532.06] Juli: well in western park he he was quite unlucky he crashed into another drone and yeah then
[2541.02] Juli: crashed into the ground was he on for beating luke do you think yes i think they were beating
[2548.38] Juli: they were beating each other with the fastest um the fastest laps that was like incredible also
[2555.5] Juli: really like milliseconds um yeah but then luke could yeah quite quietly finish his
[2565.66] Adam: his final on gary was out oh i bet he was cursing that i bet he did not enjoy that so
[2574.86] Juli: so please don't send gary ken no
[2576.94] Juli: but well he would have to to qualify also for the german national and there's no way to qualify
[2586.14] Adam: we're not racing in germany i was going to ask about that you see because just one thing is
[2591.9] Adam: obvious this year is that it's bloody impossible to get flying at all whatsoever and um i'm trying
[2597.66] Adam: to encourage people that maybe we should get some cheap easy jet flights and and get over to
[2602.86] Adam: somewhere in the continent um and it's for people listening from the future
[2611.5] Frank: we're recording this on the 23rd of june 2016 which is the day of the eu referendum in the uk
[2622.06] Adam: well i need to say if the pound falls prices of parts goes up yeah so i mentioned that i've been
[2630.38] Adam: i've been abroad for the last three weeks and every conversation i've had with a local whether
[2635.9] Adam: it's in france or de brogna has been how are you voting what are you voting there they are
[2641.74] Adam: everyone i've spoken to who i've not met before over there just petrified of us sticking our
[2647.26] Adam: fingers up to europe and leaving they are absolutely petrified and the worst part is
[2651.9] Adam: the france there i met quite a few guys who are basically saying that if we leave they're gonna
[2658.22] Adam: push their government is going to push to leave as well and then that might spark a domino effect
[2664.86] Adam: with with other countries and it'll be left with i think probably germany um and uh maybe germany
[2672.94] Juli: in italy sort of stood there going what happened yeah i'm quite afraid of that because well we are
[2679.5] Juli: i think we are all we're raised without borders yeah exactly and i'm quite afraid to to get back
[2686.22] Adam: to borders and border control i think it would be brilliant news for the financial sector in
[2691.1] Adam: france and germany who will just go up and fight all of the bankers who will have to leave london
[2695.82] Adam: yeah you know it'll uh it might work very well for them anyway if you haven't voted yet you're
[2702.38] Adam: in the uk and you're listening live you've got an hour and 14 minutes to get to the polling station
[2706.94] Frank: otherwise we're not going to talk about it anymore yes exactly so i was i was actually
[2711.74] Frank: i had on my list of things that would be interesting to ask you uly was uh how you know
[2718.14] Frank: how easy it is to to fly fly drones within the law because you know like we said earlier about
[2724.22] Frank: the u.s have all their issues of you have to be registered and then to do anything else you have
[2728.62] Frank: to have a like a full pilot's license and it all gets very messy because they haven't thought about
[2732.54] Frank: it we're fairly happy and that we've got all these regulations all sorted out fairly early on
[2737.42] Frank: um that and you know we as long as we follow the rules and the rules are fairly nicely laid out
[2744.06] Frank: then we can fly you know there are nice maps of where airports are and we can avoid them and it's
[2749.66] Frank: fairly easy um but from what adam was saying i guess it might be that uh it's probably quite
[2757.98] Frank: similar because of the the common eu aviation authority yeah that's true it's nearly the same
[2766.54] Juli: we we can fly without we're just with the station um well when we fly we should have a spotter
[2775.34] Juli: of course um we should not fly higher than 100 meters or so we should not fly in nature reserves
[2785.82] Juli: um and we have to fly on 25 million
[2791.02] Juli: where are we going yeah just said areas so normally when when i fly i fly near my village
[2797.5] Juli: here on fields or something i want to go something somewhere else normally we always ask the owner of
[2804.7] Juli: the property just to make sure that there won't be any problems but we have we haven't had any
[2812.14] Juli: problems with asking the owners or something but today i just read an article that um
[2820.7] Juli: the aviation security in germany wants to get all the drones registered so i don't know it was
[2829.1] Juli: it's just an idea and you know an idea always lasts uh needs like yeah some years to get into
[2837.02] Juli: the law but um they are also thinking about it i don't know if that's nice yeah but um
[2846.86] Juli: but if you're a drone racer then maybe it's not really a problem if you've registered registered
[2853.9] Juli: i don't know if it was sensible and it was like a driver's license to show competency
[2858.14] Juli: yeah it would work yeah i think that's that's not the best and then the worst idea because um
[2867.57] Juli: well i don't want to speak about phantom
[2875.33] Juli: but it's like you can if you have money you can you can get a phantom and you can fly without
[2881.97] Juli: being able to fly and i think that's a problem because if you're living in a city and then
[2886.29] Juli: just start to fly with your phantom in the middle of the city and then crash into cars or houses or
[2891.89] Juli: i don't know what that's why people don't like drones exactly so i think like a flying license
[2897.97] Adam: wouldn't be that bad you are not allowed to fly in the middle of the city in germany either right
[2905.09] Juli: i don't know actually if that's public space maybe yes but well not in traffic or something
[2913.73] Juli: obviously not in a city center or town center probably well if there is a park or something
[2918.61] Adam: and you have a spotter i suppose it depends how big the park is doesn't it yeah but i think
[2927.89] Adam: i don't know i mean i i sort of agree that some sort of registration so long as it is created
[2934.29] Adam: with the right intentions is a good idea i think a lot of the people in america started to get
[2939.57] Adam: worried that there was a list which was public so people could find out um you know if you had a
[2945.89] Adam: drone if they didn't like drones they could come around your house because they could find your
[2949.57] Adam: name on the internet whether that's true or not is another matter but it was certainly a concern for
[2954.13] Adam: them um and i you know that's the you know they have to pay some money and does it actually help
[2960.77] Juli: or is it just maybe like having a bike license you know like people that fly FPV if they can
[2967.57] Juli: do it well can quite fly quite close proximity to things and safely yeah so i guess it's it's
[2974.77] Juli: tricky for how they would have implemented but there's the sensible ways but the administration
[2979.97] Juli: how do you get tested to see if you can fly okay and that's probably why they'll probably come out
[2984.29] Juli: with a bad solution of just blanket registration i think well that's stupid because you well it's
[2989.57] Adam: different skills all the way through when you're writing rules you have to write rules for the
[2993.73] Adam: worst person at the bottom end of the tree you know the idiot who that's the person who's rather
[2999.17] Adam: control not the sensible person the sensible person rules or not was not going to fly their
[3004.45] Adam: drone over the middle of town square or smash it into big ben or anything like that it was always
[3008.85] Adam: going to be the person who you need to create rules for the problem is whether the rules also
[3014.21] Juli: affect those of us who think through it through yeah what's the problem with every law it's like
[3020.93] Juli: yeah exactly exactly it's not the good people has to have to suffer from from the stupid people
[3028.29] Juli: that's history yeah that's true maybe we need to get more more decision makers and politicians
[3034.61] Juli: you don't have me that to tell me that i'm german
[3038.93] Juli: i have to suffer from silly people it's a genuinely interesting thought um you know trying
[3045.57] Juli: to engage our local MPs into the yeah because it has community it has well mostly a safe track
[3054.69] Adam: of thought um when done properly and sensibly right we saw in the mini air show our local mayor
[3063.97] Adam: of uh yeah she was uh she was she was putting a good public face and uh and supported the the
[3071.17] Adam: world of drones as it was yeah and it's not a short it's not a long step is it from someone
[3076.37] Adam: like her who's effectively powerless something like your local MP the difference between a
[3082.53] Adam: mayor and an MP or some MPs anyway particularly on the blue side of the bench is the uh the level
[3089.09] Adam: of or the capacity for being a psychopath i would say uh you know mayors tend to be
[3097.25] Adam: genuinely community-minded community-spirited and and and generally want what's best for their town
[3102.69] Adam: or city uh excluding london um and uh MPs tend to well some MPs anyway tend to want to just
[3110.69] Adam: get one over the next person um so i i i'm not convinced that getting an MP involved
[3118.29] Adam: whatsoever is a good idea because it's if they've got a psychopathic tendency they'll learn about
[3123.81] Adam: it it was a bit more tongue-in-cheek but no no i don't like that they scare me
[3131.09] Adam: engage with the ones who aren't crackpots
[3135.25] Adam: oh yeah because history says we're good at choosing MPs that aren't crackpots right
[3139.65] Frank: have you wanted to yeah this is while you were while you were going off on a tangent of
[3146.61] Frank: of deep and philosophical politics i was looking up through the chat and chris h uh asks uh uly
[3155.81] Frank: how are you finding the grappner gr18 which i believe is a uh i think it's even german yeah
[3164.05] Frank: yeah is it a flight controller or is it the transmitter no it's a flight controller and um
[3172.13] Juli: well obviously there's a transmitter that works with it perfectly yeah because i don't really
[3177.97] Frank: know of groutner as as the transmitter and receiver people but i didn't realize they'd
[3182.93] Frank: done a flight controller as well that's yeah it's uh all in one thing oh so it's a receiver
[3190.77] Juli: and the flight and the flight controller yeah so it's quite cool to to build because you
[3196.29] Juli: you don't need that much not that much space um well i i have one on my quad and it flies well
[3206.77] Juli: it's good and i think it's good for racing but on my max quad i will use a fc running beta flight
[3213.49] Juli: because um i think the gr18 is not the best for doing freestyle because you can't yeah well i
[3225.33] Juli: didn't manage to to have perfect pits on it without having any wobble or something um i
[3232.61] Juli: think that's better with beta flight or kiss or something yeah i was going to ask you what your
[3237.65] Adam: fellow countrymen have produced a very fine flight controller you're not tempted to to go full german
[3243.01] Adam: engineering on your next quad what do you mean uh fly dvino is german oh yeah yeah true yeah
[3250.13] Juli: yeah but in germany they are always um sold out yes there's nothing in stock with all the water
[3257.89] Juli: right guys everything they have like two thousand key safe seasons stock in their shop i was really
[3269.01] Adam: tempted i was really tempted to put a cheeky comment on facebook when that came through
[3272.85] Juli: and you know you bloody thieves yeah when i was using them yeah and very very happy with that but
[3282.53] Juli: yeah i would try a better flight because i have a flight controller designed um one of my teammates
[3289.17] Juli: from the exploit and i wanted to test it well is it a prototype yeah something like that yeah
[3295.57] Juli: you're not allowed to talk about it no it's from it's from massive from a guy from poland and yeah
[3303.49] Juli: so let's see how it is but it runs with beta flight so oh beta flight as tony points out in
[3309.81] Frank: the chat they have released a specific beta flight configurator so that i don't think there's massive
[3316.37] Frank: difference with the beta flight configurator over the clean flight configurator apart from there's
[3322.45] Frank: a few commands that you have to do in the clean flight uh command line interface but with the beta
[3330.45] Frank: flight configurator you can configure them with a graphical user interface so you've just got the
[3335.33] Frank: buttons and drop downs and all all that nice stuff to bring it out and make it obvious what it's doing
[3341.09] Frank: um has anyone used it i've only just downloaded it to be honest i can't say i have used it no no
[3347.57] Adam: i i've i'm full kiss now i haven't touched beta flight in ages and the other thing when it's
[3352.77] Frank: flying well i don't often have to go into it but yeah that's true but yeah uh is there any fancy
[3362.85] Frank: special features on on this flight controller that you can talk about yearly or is it all
[3368.85] Frank: hush hush and kept quiet and until it's released yeah well it's just a normal flight controller
[3375.17] Frank: it has an OSD well if it's got an OSD built into it that's something yeah so it's going to be a
[3382.37] Frank: competitor to the the brain which has its OSD built into it yeah there we go that's quite big
[3391.25] Juli: but i still don't know much about it i'm just building the quad and then testing it and
[3396.29] Juli: yeah i will tell you guys on facebook yeah let us know yeah but some of my teammates are
[3403.57] Juli: flying it already someone yeah but they're racing it over the weekend yeah i think mag
[3414.21] Frank: there we go does it have a name the flight controller
[3418.29] Frank: i don't know actually it's just mark one it's just flight controller martin's flight controller
[3425.33] Frank: there we go martin's flight controller it's got a name now yeah we'll all know it as that forever
