The inaugural LDO Drone Games happened last weekend to celebrate the podcast's birthday, was great fun and thanks to everyone who helped!

[130.15] Jae: Well, I mean I'm double to distract from that that but that was the same for NJ as well, but he's an accomplished fire
[137.27] Jae: Yeah, so it's our first fights because we'd spent all day trying to get down there
[140.95] Jae: And then it all started so we thought at least for one thing we'd go on the freestyle event
[146.67] Jack: And I mean it must have been a lot of people's first freestyle event because as far as I know

[162.35] Jae: Well, who's that cuz I crashed although although if you haven't seen any of the footage of tone flying around
[168.15] Jae: He goes into race mode where he's like flying around trying to be freestyle, but going back into gate finding me

[263.22] Jae: I mean we camped there that night and the gazebo did get what the guy wrote snapped in the strong winds

[275.82] Tony: I mean it was raining at four and it started raining at bang on six

[287.34] Jae: Yeah, it's a really good event really fun. I mean let's let some new people there as well

[297.34] Jae: Because I know there was a lot used in there. I ate most of them egg and spoon race
[303.1] Frank: To be clear Tony hasn't relinquished his vegan status
[313.06] Frank: Far from it. He's just been eating vegs vegan eggs patented vegan eggs
[319.26] Jae: It also knows tomatoes. Yeah, so I think I think we had a world record set on that day
[329.18] Jae: Clinton with his numerous number of flips. I think he got something like 10 slips
[334.46] Jae: I haven't counted them
[337.1] Jae: There was a separate video that you posted up which I filmed and yeah, he gets to quite a few
[346.46] Jack: Sorry, I sent the video I did a little slow mo of him doing some rolls
[351.5] Jack: Which was sweet with the with a bag and I sent it to Chad kappa and he sent
[356.78] Jack: Back. Oh my god. This is amazing

[370.42] Jae: That's the next thing so we've got to move up to bigger and better things then yeah small children and other things

[457.63] Tony: Just like a maze. I was like am I actually seeing things or is he actually flying backwards in a loop in a like
[465.19] Tony: In a round circle backwards. My brain was going what the hell but actually you did I noticed because I was stood next to you

[496.65] Jae: Clinton Clinton uploaded it. Yeah, he uploaded the DVR, but it didn't have any of the music that we actually listen to so much it works
[507.49] Jae: He knew the track you can hopefully make it look like it goes to the music more than
[514.05] Tony: Was I was guided for Jack I was getting right into Jack's
[519.37] Tony: Freestyle and his moves and things and then I was like astonished
[524.69] Tony: I was like, how has he still got battery left and then he didn't
[534.41] Jack: Everyone would have been like inside job
[543.49] Jack: Some of your moves though were pretty wicked
[555.61] Jack: I was just tiny finds away. But um, speaking of which you have inspired me. I started building my wing
[564.89] Jack: From jolly RC and unfortunately people are gonna hate me for this, but I'm not having a jolly good time
[575.53] Jack: Main main two main things I'm gonna go easy on it number one
[580.91] Jack: No score marks
[582.75] Jack: No CG marks. No, I your B fold marks, but most of all no score mark for
[592.19] Jack: how to cut the
[595.75] Jack: Canopy middle section, you know the FPV
[598.95] Jack: section that goes in the middle of the wing. He's a
[601.15] Jack: FT mini arrow and
[604.03] Jack: He's got a little center section where the power pod goes in or
[609.19] Jack: Motor and ESC as I and normal people would call it
[613.71] Jack: Little camera pokes at the front
[615.79] Jack: With with no score marks. You have no idea how big to cut
[621.03] Jack: Because ideally you need to cut half from each side
[624.55] Jack: so
[626.11] Jack: You're never quite sure how your wings gonna fit together. So you have to build it like a normal wing. I

[634.51] Jack: Measure it out then and then cut out
[637.51] Jack: As best you can on this curved
[640.63] Jack: Wing to fit the fit the pod in there
[644.11] Jack: I don't know whether it's changed now because I bought mine quite a while ago

[649.15] Tony: Is it different to the?
[651.43] Jack: Wings that you can watch on is it a flight test wing then or it is but it's out of different different foam

[664.55] Frank: Yeah, it's heavier, but it's more durable
[668.11] Frank: But yeah, it's it's the jolly RC stuff team jolly RC is
[674.99] Frank: like not actual flight test stuff, it's just
[678.51] Frank: Copies, but I'm pretty sure they've spoken with flight test and flight tests are okay with it
[683.91] Frank: So I guess they may be paying some license fee for the design or something
[688.67] Frank: You know, I don't know what's going on. There's clearly speculation, but I
[693.55] Frank: Looking at it now
[695.23] Frank: having seen your frame Tony that was the
[700.03] Frank: Flying wings that code EK Raven, I think

[706.51] Frank: That was twenty six. Yeah, twenty six quid for that
[711.59] Frank: And that is the entire frame made out of EPP foam and you get all the nice
[718.83] Frank: Cleverses and bits to go with it. I think from what I can tell
[723.47] Frank: and then or you could spend two pounds less
[727.79] Frank: and get a foam board kit that's
[730.67] Frank: A bit of a rough knockoff of flight test one
[734.19] Frank: That seems to have all these instructional bits missing of where the CG is and everything and all the issues that
[741.15] Frank: Jack's talking about and so I my pushrods are too short. I'm really annoyed
[747.31] Frank: Yeah, but I do have a load of pushrods here Jack
[756.51] Frank: Yeah, I just think personally

[796.73] Jae: Despite having flown fixed wind for years i've never flown a wing and actually tony have inspired me as well

[807.29] Frank: I do have a versa wing that i've built

[816.97] Frank: I think from when I got it to when I actually made and did
[821.13] Frank: Like when I got the kit so when I made and it was about

[830.01] Frank: Uh to either put it together or finish putting it together or cover it or fit stuff
[835.85] Frank: But eventually I got to the point where I was like, okay now I can go fly this

[843.21] Frank: Hadn't got the right clevises
[845.37] Frank: For the push rods that i've got
[847.77] Frank: so I given up on those and rather than wait the two days and pay the three pounds or whatever it was to get the
[853.29] Frank: right size clevises

[856.25] Frank: Instead just did the z bend stuff
[860.01] Frank: To hook it all in and have the adjustable little triangle section in the middle
[866.33] Frank: and then
[867.61] Frank: So what you're meant to do is before you go flying
[871.21] Frank: You adjust the length of the push rod by
[874.17] Frank: Bending or unbending the the little triangular kink in the middle
[878.81] Frank: So that you get them both right
[881.53] Frank: sort of similar levels of throw

[885.13] Frank: And I kind of got it near enough I thought
[888.49] Frank: And it's like, uh, this is awkward bending these bits back and forth and I can't be bothered
[893.21] Frank: I'm probably going to snap it. So i'll just fly it will be fine
[897.13] Frank: And it did it flew all right to begin with kind of in
[901.69] Frank: Apart from that I had to have aileron's full, right?
[906.57] Frank: Which is not ideal
[908.33] Frank: and I was like
[909.93] Frank: Maybe i've done something wrong. So I just kind of released
[915.13] Frank: The right stick so that you know sort of see what would happen and yeah, it just screwballed into the ground really fast
[923.13] Frank: Um, but it came down smashed into the ground
[926.89] Frank: most of the frame all still in one piece
[930.33] Frank: perfectly fine apart from the the motor mount and the motor just kind of
[935.27] Frank: launched
[936.89] Frank: Further than the rest of the frame did
[939.85] Frank: And left a nice big square hole
[943.13] Frank: Uh where the motor mount was attached
[946.65] Frank: So i've just got to kind of put it back and reinforce it
[949.37] Frank: Um, but I can't help but feel that i'm not going to be able to reinforce it anymore

[1049.69] Tony: It was me who made you stop flying with mobius if you remember jack because I used to fly with mobius and then
[1056.63] Tony: GoPro and I was like get a GoPro get a GoPro and then now you're flying GoPro, but
[1061.93] Tony: Mobius is great for wings because um, you know, it's small and light, isn't it?
[1066.01] Jae: Yeah, and the form factor is much better than the air brake

[1075.45] Jack: No, we read somewhere that um, that's not the case really yeah, apparently, um

[1161.45] Jae: It's crazy. I I am a night owl and it was fun to fly this morning. It was perfect
[1168.01] Tony: I'm thinking really thinking about getting up early tomorrow and
[1172.01] Tony: And fly my wing because I think it's going to be all right
[1175.13] Frank: This is the uh, johnny bouncing school of flying things, isn't it?

[1184.41] Frank: Yeah, really nice flying conditions first thing in the morning like before is before it's a reasonable hour to start

[2659.57] Frank: And the main one who's been arguing at people saying it's not difficult and everyone else saying but there's no rules

[2667.01] Frank: Uh, I sat down with jack for about five minutes and came up with rules
[2672.29] Frank: In that it was basically
[2677.09] Jae: It was basically you get and jane was just explaining the rules at the moment
[2681.57] Frank: You get marks out of 10 for style precision and creativity. So style was
[2687.65] Frank: um sort of keeping uh a routine going for the for the entire time and uh
[2695.25] Frank: Making it uh so that you didn't see any pauses or anything
[2699.41] Frank: And so just sort of keeping it continuous throughout the whole thing precision which was uh getting all your roles to stop dead on
[2708.77] Frank: And things like that just making sure the horizon is is dead on
[2713.65] Frank: And if you go through small tight gaps or you know, just kind of land difficult things really well
[2721.73] Frank: and creativity was using good use of the
[2725.57] Frank: Making good use of the the space that you're flying in

[2729.73] Frank: Going with the the music and anything else that you kind of could come up with you'd get marks
[2737.09] Frank: Out of 10 for your creativity and you just got added up. Uh, we had two judges
[2743.01] Frank: We had uh, the other guy frank, uh, he was uh, fpv judge
[2747.09] Frank: uh, no line of sight judge and then we had art uh, art folk that was uh,
[2751.81] Frank: We grabbed him out the crowd as a fpv judge
[2755.33] Frank: um for the event
[2757.57] Frank: And we did much deliberation. Yeah

[2919.97] NJ: You'll see me literally go backward straight into a tree at high speed and get stuck up there
[2924.29] NJ: So there's there's been lots of broken props on the road to learning that
[2928.37] Jae: Ah, well, that's that's kind of reassuring for the rest of us, but they were entirely worth it

[2939.57] NJ: it's yeah, it is worth it it's nice to try and come up with with something a little bit different and
[2945.01] NJ: You know, that's the beauty of these these aircraft

[2951.97] NJ: Um, so you just have to imagine it and then just go out and and practice it

[3031.81] NJ: With the right amount of power to make it kind of fool you into thinking it's almost doing something whether where it could be 3d

[3043.73] NJ: The 3d thing will start to get a little more popular and then um, yeah, I guess things are really going to get crazy at that point

[3279.89] NJ: We were discussing peds and tuning and I said well, you know
[3283.01] NJ: I think half the problem is when you're learning to tune you don't know
[3287.55] NJ: Necessarily know what what it is that you want. So it's hard to know what you're aiming for when you tune

[3293.41] NJ: I've been flying for a very long time now. I think to me. I regard this as a great tune
[3298.45] NJ: But here's my cop to have a go of it, you know, and you know jay was pretty much shaking at the idea of like my drone

[3308.53] NJ: Upping and it'd be fine. So I was like just try and

[3315.09] NJ: What it could feel like to fly and how much more that can kind of inspire you to be a better pilot when you realize that

[3806.11] NJ: So i'm going to approach the subject cautiously and start to put up tutorials
[3810.43] NJ: But the best what I can say is the best way to start learning that
[3814.43] NJ: Is actually to get into a situation where you're yawing
[3818.83] NJ: Around an object. So a tree's a really good starting point
[3822.59] NJ: And if you just get into a
[3824.83] NJ: Into a where you're yawing around but always facing that object and then what you actually want to start to do is actually slightly over rotate
[3833.31] NJ: So if you're heading off to your left hand side, you actually want to nose
[3838.27] NJ: Further around to the right
[3840.27] NJ: So that the actual object that you're rotating is more towards your 11 o'clock rather than straight at your 12 o'clock
[3847.71] NJ: And then you move it to the 10 o'clock and each time the inputs that you're using to sustain that circle
[3853.47] NJ: Start moving further around the sticks, but that's kind of the starting point but
[3858.43] NJ: It's something I would craft
[3860.99] Jae: It does work as you know
[3862.43] Jae: I tried it once yawing around and I managed to get it into that point where it starts to look like a bit
[3867.23] Jae: I didn't do anything else up there. It was a brief second so I could see how it worked and then I forgot again

[3873.31] NJ: well, this is the kind of thing where that where the simulators are really
[3877.55] NJ: Really useful because you could you could burn through five batteries and by the end of that
[3882.27] NJ: You might feel like you've really started to get a grip on it
[3885.55] NJ: But you could do like an hour on the sim learn loads more and then go out and
[3891.07] NJ: Get some real world practice with that with with that new knowledge and muscle memory
[3896.27] NJ: So, um, yeah, there's for things like that where you're literally learning
[3900.43] NJ: sort of strange
[3901.87] NJ: Uh stick commands that are put you in place is sort of slightly out of your comfort zone
[3906.11] NJ: I'd definitely recommend, you know putting some stick time in and my personal favorite on that front is hot props. I still
[3913.21] NJ: maintain
[3914.43] NJ: It requires the most setup
[3915.71] NJ: but for me out of all of them and i've tried pretty much every single one now that is the one that that
[3920.59] NJ: Seems to feel the most like my real world, uh quadcopter
[3926.69] Jae: But that that is with some tuning and so it's not one of these yes
[3930.37] NJ: it does take some messing around with uh, I mean any to be honest with you that the
[3935.65] NJ: I'm not going to you know bad mouth any ones in particular
[3939.89] NJ: Um, but because they're all you know, they're all
[3942.61] NJ: In their infancy. There's all a lot of developing going on to get the physics and flight physics better in them
[3948.05] NJ: but I will say one of the first ones that was out that just seemed to do a really great job and felt great right from
[3954.13] NJ: the off was actually um
[3956.11] NJ: fpv freerider
[3957.73] NJ: Which is you know, super cheap. It runs on just about anything

[3963.97] NJ: Max pcs and not particularly high spec that it will run very well

[4078.63] Frank: For a good few minutes hovering it and did you know actually doing maneuvers doing the egg rolls, obviously

[4093.51] Frank: So here's I think it's the bottom plate of a zmr
[4097.19] Frank: Um with a little Tupperware box, uh on top with all the the fpv gear and everything in

[4106.71] Frank: ESCs just batteries everything in the Tupperware box a little servo sticking out of the front on a

[4427.84] NJ: races, I you know, I try and take that as a real inspiration to to go and work harder on something or
[4434.0] NJ: And I think that tends to be the general mindset of people getting into the into this hobby, you know
[4439.04] NJ: There's such a good community everywhere you look i'm sure it's more of an inspiration thing than a scared thing
[4443.6] NJ: But I must say it isn't it that's the first competition that i've done and it yeah is is quite terrifying
[4450.48] NJ: Um, yeah, it's very stressful. It is. Yes
[4454.56] Jae: I've only ever done hidden valley events actually because it was the drone race day
[4459.28] Jae: The may there that was my first ever event and then this one was my second ever event
[4466.64] Jack: Because was that was that a new place for you as well enjoy
[4470.96] NJ: Um, so i've been to hidden valley two weeks previous

[4475.68] NJ: So for the event so I I knew although I didn't really fly that little area so much
[4481.68] NJ: But certainly I I knew where things were to not get disorientated as to sort of where
[4487.76] NJ: Where everything was so that definitely did help a little bit
[4491.28] Jack: Yeah, I was going to say you've done really well if that was the case of like

[4497.6] NJ: I I think that's one of the harder things, isn't it when you go to any that I think that's another reason now

[4511.52] NJ: So you can actually download the track in advance and you can learn it

[4519.44] NJ: Matter how well you know somewhere on the ground the minute you get into the air the whole place is brand new again

[5648.56] NJ: you've got to be able to spot it and you've got half a chance to bring it in and

[5656.4] NJ: I'm from that way around anyway, so it feels right to me, but I think it makes sense as well
[5660.48] NJ: You really should get a good good idea of how to fly basic line of sight figure eights
[5665.76] NJ: Yeah, i'm so used to it facing you and and that kind of thing

[5671.2] Jack: I learned quad line of sight before um
[5674.88] NJ: Oh, it won't be too different
[5677.6] Jack: That's it except just won't be whole thing
[5680.32] Jae: Down is up and up is down and uh, the thing you want to learn with with any fixed wing is it's stalled
[5686.4] Jae: And what happens when it stalls?
[5688.56] Jae: And can you recover from that stall and have you?
[5692.0] Jae: And I think that's once you've got to a point like that then you're more capable of flying anyway
[5697.6] Jae: Because you recognize some of that flying ftv, but it's about stalling
[5703.76] NJ: Different different models stall differently as well. Some some are really really forgiving and still quite evenly and then
[5711.04] NJ: uh
[5712.4] NJ: you know some of the more delta wings uh delta wing shaped planes tend to
[5717.44] NJ: Uh
[5719.44] NJ: But you tend to find those ones have much
[5722.96] NJ: Higher stall speeds and when they do usually get one wing stalled before the other so they'll tend to
[5728.4] NJ: Kind of roll over at one side and then nose down
[5731.68] NJ: So it's all about feeling how to recover from that or really just sort of anticipating when it's going to do it
[5738.64] NJ: But keep nice and high and you've got loads of room to to correct and recover
[5744.32] Jack: Cut get a couple of mistakes. Hi

[6261.19] Jack: And then dump the files there. See now that's right. That's frightfully organized
