[70.68] Kevin Dougherty: actually me and my dad did some RC when I was very young and
[74.64] Kevin Dougherty: He took me out and got me lessons and gliders when I was like seven or eight years old
[79.0] Kevin Dougherty: then pursued it in college and got all my ratings and got a degree in aviation and

[537.94] Kevin Dougherty: The basic gist of the story was when I was in college. Sorry. I'm like staring at the quad that's flying around the field

[544.74] Tony: This is really cool because it's like alive you're out flying with schizo. It's all good for us
[549.54] Kevin Dougherty: So, uh when I was in college me and my friends, you know, we did the typical college thing
[555.54] Kevin Dougherty: We went out to the bars and hung out and uh to avoid, you know, the whole drinking and driving thing
[560.66] Kevin Dougherty: Which is a bad idea. Don't do that anyone
[563.46] Kevin Dougherty: We would ride bicycles to the bar, but we would go to the uh dive bars and kind of the redneck bars
[569.46] Kevin Dougherty: this was in tennessee and um
[572.26] Kevin Dougherty: And so as a joke we started a bicycle gang and uh, we would make we had a logo and we'd spray paint stencils
[579.46] Kevin Dougherty: On t-shirts with the uh logo for the bike gang and there was the stingers

[586.42] Kevin Dougherty: Stinger swarm was what we called it when we would pull up to the bar
[590.58] Kevin Dougherty: We'd show up
[591.38] Kevin Dougherty: We kind of like hit the back brake and skid out and like all yell and be obnoxious and that was the stingers swarm
[598.58] Kevin Dougherty: After college I ended up adopting that as my like online
[602.58] Kevin Dougherty: Email address and social media name and everything and uh, just kind of hung on to it
[608.02] Kevin Dougherty: Kind of as an homage to uh, all my friends from college
[611.86] Kevin Dougherty: And so when I started applying mini quads, I wanted to uh pick out a name. It was cool

[618.02] Kevin Dougherty: And I was just lazy and never got around to it. And so I just kept
[622.1] Kevin Dougherty: Stinger swarm which had been my online persona for years
[625.7] Jack: It works and we love it. I think you're a bit more like a little bit more mellow nowadays
[631.06] Jack: Like, you know, I wouldn't I can't really see you as some sort of like bicycle hooligan anymore like

[643.46] Jack: We there you get those little names, isn't it?
[645.78] Jack: Yeah, you know we just have to put up with tony. So there you go. Someone

[675.06] Kevin Dougherty: Three channel, I believe it's just got aileron and elevator and the throttle and uh, it runs the same

[685.3] Kevin Dougherty: And uh, it's just a really fun little plane that you can fly around in some fields and fly fpv and stuff
[690.9] Jack: Well, so it's like a little absolute nano not I wouldn't call it
[697.06] Kevin Dougherty: The whole plane is not as small and you're not going to fly it indoors. Let's put it that way you need a
[703.54] Kevin Dougherty: A somewhat decent sized field to fly it but it is a lot of fun to fly for sure
[708.58] Kevin Dougherty: although on 25 milliwatt if you
[711.78] Kevin Dougherty: my experience, uh
[714.5] Kevin Dougherty: I was flying it and I managed to get it behind the tree tops and um
[719.22] Kevin Dougherty: Did not get turned back towards the field and the video just got worse and worse
[723.3] Kevin Dougherty: And uh, it was gone. We did. We did find it. It was like a couple blocks away, but
[728.66] Tony: That's how we have to cope in the uk. That's what we

[775.86] Kevin Dougherty: He was getting interested in rc and was watching a bunch of the flight test videos and um
[782.66] Kevin Dougherty: Hadn't he didn't build anything but his fiance wanted to get him a birthday present that had uh
[789.22] Kevin Dougherty: You know, it was rc related and didn't know what to buy him
[792.42] Kevin Dougherty: So she was like, hey kevin
[793.38] Kevin Dougherty: Will you watch these videos and figure out what's cool and tell me what to buy him for his birthday?
[798.1] Kevin Dougherty: So I started watching the flight test videos and I got addicted and we started out flying things together
[804.42] Kevin Dougherty: um and got into like building foamy's and just flying at the park and uh
[809.14] Kevin Dougherty: You know watching flight tests. They do a lot of fpv and i'm like, what is this whole fpv thing?
[813.3] Kevin Dougherty: so I got like the little um, it was the attitude b2 so they had like a
[818.18] Kevin Dougherty: camera and uh
[820.26] Kevin Dougherty: Video transmitter module that came as a kit so I got that and started putting that on some foamy's and then built some wings
[826.74] Kevin Dougherty: And then from watching fpv videos, I saw the argonay races in france and I was like, oh I gotta do that
[832.9] Kevin Dougherty: so after that, uh
[835.46] Kevin Dougherty: I got hooked and was watching charcoo's videos
[838.34] Tony: And uh, we've all got hooked the same way

[842.58] Tony: Exactly the same way that little swedish drug pressure

[849.3] Tony: It's that damn flight test argonay. Yeah, everything you've just said i've done

[1002.82] Kevin Dougherty: Stupid and getting to do stupid things. Um and take risks where the only uh cost in the end is uh

[1015.54] Kevin Dougherty: I kind of looked at it from the beginning. I told myself I was never going to put my gear ahead of
[1021.14] Kevin Dougherty: What I wanted to do with it. And so if there's an idea that I have in my head i'll sit here
[1026.9] Kevin Dougherty: And basically break all of my things trying to do it until I decide either it's doable or not doable
[1033.62] Jack: I can't get over that like you're in that abandoned warehouse and there was that
[1038.9] Jack: That big massive tube and you've got through this tiny gap. That's all i'm talking about

[1045.62] Jack: Yeah, I was watching that video and I was like, I can't even see the gap in the video
[1050.1] Jack: I didn't even know there was a gap there
[1054.42] Jack: and the next thing you're like
[1056.8] Jack: Raging through it and i'm just like
[1059.94] Jack: I'm just like who is this guy stinger swab like, you know, i'm just like

[1066.5] Tony: He's the balls in guy. He just done it and that and that's what I like language tony
[1072.34] Tony: Sorry, take take the risks and go for it. And then when it when it works, it's just a hundred percent. Well good

[1085.3] Kevin Dougherty: You know, it was a difficult thing to pull off and then it just never translates into good footage

[1094.82] Kevin Dougherty: And I was super excited about and then watch the footage and i'm like, oh you can't even tell what I did

[1101.62] Jack: When when roto right first like appeared on the scene, they're like bigging up. Oh my god
[1106.58] Jack: You know, like he was the only one brave enough to fly the dam and i'm like, oh my god

[1115.14] Jack: You know like he's not even on the show. You know what I mean? He's just like

[1124.1] Jack: Playing with himself. I suppose really you can't show that to kids but you know

[1135.06] Tony: Stuff like we're seeing your name come up quite a lot now

[1170.5] Jack: Um, what's your opinion and like your experience in chenobyl because we never really we don't get any vlogs from you

[1205.78] Kevin Dougherty: I don't know. It's like how your perspective changes through the experience because when I first heard that uh,
[1211.46] Kevin Dougherty: Roto riot was going to chernobyl. I immediately was like, okay steal chat. You got to get me on this trip
[1215.94] Kevin Dougherty: I want to go. Absolutely
[1217.7] Kevin Dougherty: I didn't even know you could go to chernobyl
[1219.62] Kevin Dougherty: But now that I know that you can I have to go and then you start thinking about it like okay
[1224.42] Kevin Dougherty: I'm actually going to chernobyl
[1226.9] Kevin Dougherty: Uh, maybe I should look up and find out some stuff. I think steel actually got me
[1231.7] Kevin Dougherty: Going with that. He was watching all these documentaries and doing research on radiation and uh
[1237.38] Kevin Dougherty: Getting a good knowledge base of what we were
[1240.1] Kevin Dougherty: Really going into and so you start doing that and then you actually get there
[1244.26] Kevin Dougherty: And uh the first time the geiger counter like registers anything above normal ambient you're like, oh my god
[1250.82] Kevin Dougherty: And uh you freak out and then you start realizing like what's normal for normal like here and uh
[1258.02] Kevin Dougherty: What normal that I experience every day when I go to work and fly on an airliner?
[1262.74] Kevin Dougherty: and uh
[1263.78] Kevin Dougherty: And then what is safe for short periods of time for like while you're walking through a building versus
[1270.34] Kevin Dougherty: or something that you're going to walk by and be exposed to for just a
[1273.78] Kevin Dougherty: A very short period of time versus where do we want to set up and fly? It's like, okay this area
[1279.22] Kevin Dougherty: Over here is I don't want to stay in there for two hours, but this area over here is okay
[1284.02] Kevin Dougherty: And so it's like I don't know. It's it's I can't I don't do a really good job of putting it into words and uh
[1290.9] Kevin Dougherty: The realization that you get of the invisible dangers that are still there
[1295.22] Kevin Dougherty: um in terms of radiation and also just the massive scale of the whole city that's just
[1301.3] Tony: Abandoned and not usable anymore. I think that's the people can't get is the scale how big it is. Yeah
[1308.58] Tony: Yeah, I think it it did come across in you guys videos and roto riot videos. It did it did come across
[1316.18] Kevin Dougherty: Yeah, that roto riot video from uh from turnoble was just amazing. Um, they
[1321.78] Kevin Dougherty: Uh, there's so many more perspectives than just um the flight footage perspective
[1327.54] Kevin Dougherty: Um that we normally get with miniquas. It was really cool really uh something interesting and uh
[1334.42] Tony: Amazing to be a part of for sure. Um, amazingly green out there as well
