[169.16] Jae: it was a drone show. And you two late stock out 30 stock out there all weekend, weren't you?

[178.16] Jae: Any dancing and pitching on the dance floor?
[182.16] Tony: No flying from either of us this time.
[186.16] Tony: We learned from our mistakes last year.
[189.16] Tony: Well, the mistake, as in, you know, what it's like multi-parting in a building like that, it was horrendous.

[201.16] Tony: Yeah, they look they look promising.
[203.16] Tony: That looks like the way forward for flying indoors is the connect system.

[216.16] Jack: I am I must say we had pilot who came in third last week on the field.

[258.16] Jack: I was wandering around loads with my my little passport pass and stuff.

[267.16] Jae: You were pretty much tied up with the fossil stuff.
[269.16] Jae: I mean, it was quite a busy standard with the Revo.
[272.16] Tony: Yeah, we introduced our new frame, which was been looking forward to talk about
[277.16] Tony: and show off for a couple of months.
[280.16] Tony: And I had to keep it under wraps.
[282.16] Tony: So I've been a good boy like that didn't show any of my mates or anything.
[286.16] Jae: I mean, I was the first I saw of it.
[288.16] Jae: So you know, you know, for me, like picking up the frame and holding it
[293.16] Jae: because for a while I was I was wondering how this tensioner would work
[297.16] Jae: and how it would look just seeing it, you know, on the morning traveling there.
[302.16] Jae: But it felt like there was a bit more engineering to a standard quad,
[305.16] Jae: like halfway between, well, not halfway, but more akin to like a helicopter
[310.16] Jae: where there's there's different parts that you actually tighten and stuff
[313.16] Jae: rather than just putting screws into standoffs or whatever.
[317.16] Jae: It just seemed like there was a bit more and I was impressed with it, the Revo frame.
[321.16] Tony: Well, you know what we've done.
[323.16] Tony: We turned the legs the other way, so there was less airflow.
[328.16] Tony: So it was more aerodynamics.
[331.16] Tony: But doing that, we needed to find a rigging to make it stiffer.
[337.16] Tony: So we went through like 20 different riggings to find the one we're using now.
[341.16] Tony: And I think it's one from Germany, like three stretched line with about 150 breaking strain.
[348.16] Tony: It's like a woven material.
[350.16] Tony: We tried wire, everything like cheese cutting wire.
[355.16] Tony: Loads of different.
[357.16] Jae: Yeah, it's a bit of a balance between not something that's not going to cut through the carbon
[362.16] Jae: and something that will.
[364.16] Tony: That was it. Yeah, that was it.
[366.16] Tony: I mean, the one I've got is still like production model.
[370.16] Tony: I mean, it's it's pretty much finished.
[372.16] Tony: We're just doing a few more bits to it, but it flies amazing.
[377.16] Tony: And I want to say it's our first venture into carbon fiber.
[383.16] Tony: And I think it's such a great design by Martin and all the guys on board the fossil stuff.
[391.16] Tony: We've had a really good time, enjoyed doing doing what we've done to make it and get it where it is.
[398.16] Jae: Yeah, I mean, it's quite light, which is one thing.
[401.16] Jae: But also just looking at the top profile, there's very little to get in the way of the prop,
[406.16] Jae: you know, thrust going down through the frame.
[408.16] Jae: Whereas before in the arms and especially on the gravity series, it would have met with some solid destruction.

[747.44] Sheila: We want everyone to be able to use the radio spectrum
[749.44] Sheila: and, yeah, not suffer from interference
[754.44] Sheila: and just have a merry little time playing along together.

[759.44] Sheila: So, most of them out of the box,
[760.44] Sheila: which are two drones, are what we call license exempt,
[763.44] Sheila: which means that you don't need to get a license
[765.44] Sheila: in order to be able to use them,
[766.44] Sheila: just like your mobile phone is license exempt,
[768.44] Sheila: like your car key, not your car key is also license exempt,
[772.44] Sheila: because imagine the pain that would come from...
[774.44] Sheila: You buy your mobile phone,
[775.44] Sheila: then straight away you're on the phone to Ofcom,
[777.44] Sheila: can I have a license fee?
[778.44] Sheila: Because that would be a pain.
[779.44] Sheila: So, that's why we created this whole license exemption
[781.44] Sheila: for certain products.
[783.44] Sheila: Is that right?
[784.44] Sheila: No, that's completely...
[786.44] Sheila: So, that's why we created these license exemptions.
[788.44] Sheila: Also, some manufacturers can design products
[790.44] Sheila: and put them straight out on the market
[792.44] Sheila: without talking to Ofcom about getting licenses
[794.44] Sheila: just for their product.
[795.44] Sheila: There's, like, a list of license exemptions.
[797.44] Sheila: So, if you build your product to work on a certain frequency
[800.44] Sheila: under a certain power and other things,
[803.44] Sheila: if your product meets those criteria,
[805.44] Sheila: then you can put it on the market as a license exempt product
[807.44] Sheila: and your consumers don't need to get a license.
[809.44] Sheila: Now, most drones usually fall under that license exemption,
[813.44] Sheila: in which case people can just go and buy a drone,
[815.44] Sheila: take it out of the box.
[817.44] Sheila: However, some drones do not fall under the license exemption
[821.44] Sheila: because of the transmitter power, for example.
[824.44] Sheila: A really, really common one we get
[826.44] Sheila: is the drones that have cameras on them
[829.44] Sheila: for the first-person view.
[830.44] Sheila: They transmit the camera image back to your remote controller
[833.44] Sheila: or to your bubbles, whatever.
[836.44] Sheila: And, often, the limit on that,
[838.44] Sheila: it's 5.8 GHz transmitter,
[839.44] Sheila: and the limit is 55 milliwatts.
[841.44] Sheila: You know, you're still...
[842.44] Jack: Yeah, so it's 200, 100, 600, even 1 watt.
[846.44] Sheila: Often, people want more power,
[848.44] Sheila: so they can go further, so they can get a better video image,
[850.44] Sheila: whatever it is.
[851.44] Sheila: But the fact is, if you've got over 25 milliwatts
[853.44] Sheila: on the 5.8 GHz band,
[856.44] Sheila: you need a license from Ofcom.
[858.44] Sheila: To not use a license and to use over 25 milliwatts
[861.44] Sheila: is an offence into the Wildest Telegraph React 2006.
[864.44] Jack: What kind of trouble can you get into hoping?
[867.44] Sheila: Worst case scenario,
[869.44] Sheila: £5,000 fine and six minutes in prison.
[872.44] Sheila: So, it is...
[874.44] Sheila: The license you spent is quite a serious fence.
[878.44] Sheila: To my knowledge,
[880.44] Sheila: it's not yet been used for a drone user,
[884.44] Sheila: but that's what the offence would be
[887.44] Sheila: and that's what the punishment could be.
[889.44] Sheila: So, I suppose it's important to know,
[891.44] Sheila: and people should take it seriously.
[892.44] Sheila: The advice we give to consumers, more than anything,
[894.44] Sheila: is speak to the manufacturer.
[896.44] Sheila: We don't expect everyone to be an expert in radio law.
[899.44] Sheila: So, speak to the manufacturer.
[901.44] Sheila: The manufacturer should be able to guide you.
[903.44] Sheila: They should be able to help you if they're a decent manufacturer.

[906.44] Jack: Ralph, can you, like,
[909.44] Jack: as you go somewhere, remotely,
[913.42] Jack: say somewhere, this place will give you a band-aid
[915.42] Jack: in the middle of a clock,
[917.42] Jack: so you can speak down into the nearest thing you can interfere with

[929.14] Jack: So, you wouldn't be able to get an exemption.

[946.78] Sheila: So, if you were having a competition on a weekend, for example,
[948.78] Sheila: you could talk to them and they could arrange,
[950.78] Sheila: help arrange all the licenses for the users,
[952.78] Sheila: so everyone could use a Spectrum in that area on that weekend
[955.78] Sheila: and it would all be fine.
[957.78] Sheila: Regarding costs, unfortunately, I have no idea.
[959.78] Sheila: I don't work for licensing,
[960.78] Sheila: so I couldn't even give you a ballpark figure.
[962.78] Jack: So, what do we do?
[963.78] Jack: How can we Google the Spectrum Licensing Team?
[965.78] Sheila: Yeah, see what comes up.
[967.78] Sheila: And hopefully there should be something along there,
[970.78] Sheila: particularly if you are doing, like, an event,

[974.78] Sheila: off-com, Google that,

[979.78] Sheila: Like, when I talk to them, I email that generic email address

[987.78] Jack: It would be really nice if they reached out,
[989.78] Jack: you know, for, like, the hobbyists and enthusiasts

[996.78] Jack: hey, do you want to use more powerful,
[998.78] Jack: if you know you're being sensible,
[1000.78] Jack: far out and in certain areas
[1002.78] Jack: and make it slightly more accessible to be able to do that?
[1006.78] Jack: I think a few people might jump on board to get a licensing.

[1010.78] Jack: They want to be sensible.
[1011.78] Sheila: Of course, we realise that people want to be legal
[1013.78] Sheila: and that's why we're here, we're here to educate
[1015.78] Sheila: and give people advice and pointers.
[1017.78] Sheila: But the fact is, we do have limited resources
[1019.78] Sheila: and there are loads of spectrum users,
[1022.78] Sheila: not just hobbyists or drones.
[1025.78] Jack: There's Wi-Fi as well.
[1026.78] Jack: Yeah, exactly.
[1027.78] Jack: I find that Wi-Fi.
[1028.78] Jack: I mean, some of the Wi-Fi hubs,
[1029.78] Jack: and, like, you can even get the 2.4 boosters on eBay
[1032.78] Jack: and they output for what, apparently, is mental.
[1036.78] Sheila: Yeah, so you have to be really careful with stuff like
[1038.78] Sheila: games to copy eBay and things like that.
[1039.78] Sheila: We do our best to get...

[1044.78] Sheila: so manufacturers will be putting things on the market
[1047.78] Sheila: and R&T regulations or the radio equipment directive,

[1052.78] Sheila: And it's not illegal to put on the market
[1056.78] Sheila: a transmitter, for example, in the 5.8 gig band.
[1059.78] Sheila: It's not illegal to put on a transmitter.
[1061.78] Sheila: As long as it's compliant, it's E-marked
[1063.78] Sheila: and it's done all its testing.
[1065.78] Sheila: If it's 600 milliwatts, that's not illegal.
[1068.78] Sheila: It's not illegal to buy it.
[1070.78] Jack: Not illegal to buy it?

[1074.78] Sheila: It's only illegal to use it.
