====================================

Tony and Jack Tie the knot.

[0.82] Jack: Hello, and welcome.
[4.58] Jack: Hi.
[12.18] Jack: Today...
[13.18] Jack: Keep it on, Jack.
[14.18] Jack: No, it's really hot.
[18.18] Jack: Right, today...
[20.18] Jack: Please put it back on.
[21.18] Jack: We are going by.
[28.71] Jack: Right, that's so much better.
[30.71] Tony: Pull yourself together, come on.
[33.71] Jack: Right, today we are joined by Tony Merchant.
[38.71] Tony: Why do you always say it, Merchant, when you know it ain't?
[41.71] Tony: Because every single person who rings him up says,
[44.71] Tony: Tony Merchant.
[47.71] Jack: And of course, our vicar today is paying us 360.
[54.71] Jack: How are you doing?
[55.71] Lee: Hello.
[56.71] Jack: How are you, buddy?
[57.71] Jack: Yep, I'm all good.
[61.71] Jack: You're going to be our minister, our pasture, for this evening.
[64.71] Jack: Thank you.
[65.71] Jack: Nominated grown-up.
[67.71] Jack: Yep, that's it.
[69.71] Jack: And we'll be convincing the marriage later.
[72.71] Jack: Just before you go.
[74.71] Jack: And then hopefully the other guys.
[76.71] Jack: We've already got a question.
[79.71] Jack: What do we think of the evolution?
[81.71] Lee: Which evolution?
[85.95] Jack: I ain't got a clue, like...
[87.95] Lee: It's a bit cevissie.
[90.95] Jack: That's...
[92.95] Jack: Well, I'd rather have that than a Subaru.
[95.95] Jack: I'll say that.
[99.95] Tony: Christmas, everyone.
[102.95] Tony: Jack, mate, let's wear silly hats.
[105.95] Lee: Except painless, because it doesn't go on camera.
[108.95] Lee: No, and also I didn't get the memo.
[111.95] Tony: That's fine.
[112.95] Tony: He's Christmas-ed up his hands, but we can't see them.
[116.95] Lee: No, they're covered in tinsel.
[120.95] Jack: Right, so what's in your stocking this Christmas, painless?
[129.95] Lee: Well, hopefully Mrs. Painless, but that's another story.
[132.95] Lee: Hey!
[135.95] Lee: Well, at the moment, we're kind of just coming to the end of all the stuff for December
[140.95] Lee: and starting to do videos for January.
[142.95] Lee: It's been really weird actually, putting 2017's date on stuff before we get there.
[148.95] Lee: But we've been playing a lot with that brain FPVRE-1 flight controller.
[152.95] Lee: You know, the F4-based one.
[155.95] Lee: Yeah, that's turning out to be pretty good.
[157.95] Lee: Have you seen that stuff, Tony?
[159.95] Lee: Is that for the micro stuff?
[162.95] Lee: No, it's...
[163.95] Lee: That's the B.
[164.95] Tony: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[167.95] Lee: The brain FPVRE-1's an F4-based flight controller, but it's a bit funky.
[171.95] Lee: It's not just like an F3 on steroids.
[174.95] Lee: It actually has its own image for drone-in and beta flight,
[177.95] Lee: and the image for beta flight also includes a vector-based on-screen display.
[183.95] Lee: So, do you know when you first tried a minimum OSD,
[186.95] Lee: and before you plugged it in or you saw your first video,
[189.95] Lee: you really wanted it to be like the cockpit of a fighter plane like Top Gun?
[193.95] Lee: Yeah.
[194.95] Lee: And when you tried your minimum OSD, it really, really wasn't.
[197.95] Tony: Yeah.
[198.95] Lee: This actually is.
[200.95] Lee: It's absolutely brilliant.
[201.95] Lee: And it also does some cool stuff like if you...
[205.95] Lee: You can do all your settings like you can with a minimum OSD,
[208.95] Lee: change your PIDs and all that jazz,
[210.95] Lee: but you can also have a live spectrum analyzer going when you're flying,
[215.95] Lee: and it shows you all the vibrations and harmonics in real time on a graph
[221.95] Lee: because it's all vector-based as you're flying.
[223.95] Lee: So, if you want to know where you need to set your notch filter for beta flight,
[226.95] Lee: you just go and fly and then watch your FPV stuff
[229.95] Lee: and see where you have the problem and then set your notch filter.
[232.95] Tony: That sounds pretty cool.
[234.95] Tony: I'd like to do PIDs on the fly as well.
[238.95] Tony: I went out for PID tuning today and I made it worse and come home all angry.
[243.95] Tony: Did you write down where you started?
[246.95] Tony: I just need to go backwards a bit.
[250.95] Tony: I'm getting oscillations on turns on race flight.
[255.95] Tony: Oh, your race flight.
[257.95] Tony: Okay. Wow. Right.
[259.95] Jack: I know. Sorry.
[263.95] Jack: Now, we're going to close this open software.
[266.95] Jack: No. No, none of that.
[268.95] Jack: I made the mistake of asking Von Quad.
[271.95] Jack: He's got one of the creators of race flight on his show and I was like,
[275.95] Jack: why do we have to join a cult in order to download the hex?
[280.95] Jack: So, I think there's a picture of me on the wall with like, no,
[286.95] Jack: you know, they'll throw a broken prop at me and stuff like that.
[291.95] Jack: But I don't know. I don't get it.
[294.95] Jack: I really don't.
[295.95] Jack: I think D shot on kiss flies better.
[298.95] Jack: And at least Boris has got something to do with that.
[301.95] Lee: So Tony, what's the attraction of race flight for you then?
[304.95] Lee: Why have you having a crack with that?
[307.95] Tony: I just wanted a change really.
[309.95] Tony: And there's a few things on there.
[312.95] Tony: Like no, you don't have to set minimum for all and things like that.
[317.95] Tony: So it just makes it look it looks like it's going to be easier when it's finalized.
[323.95] Tony: I'm pretty sure it's not finalized yet.
[326.95] Lee: No, it's not.
[327.95] Lee: We were talking to somebody about getting some boards in that were race flight
[330.95] Lee: only to have a look at.
[332.95] Lee: And then when I started delving into the software,
[334.95] Lee: I started to get nervous really quickly because of course,
[337.95] Lee: if we do a video on it,
[338.95] Lee: setting it up and it's on a pre-release version of the software,
[342.95] Lee: I can pretty much guarantee that will be out of date when the proper release comes out.
[346.95] Lee: So we've kind of held off doing anything with race flight until end of January,
[350.95] Lee: kind of February time, because that's when everyone thinks,
[353.95] Lee: always telling me at the moment that it will be stable.
[355.95] Lee: But your guess is probably as good as mine.
[358.95] Tony: I know.
[359.95] Tony: It feels really good when I'm flying it.
[362.95] Tony: It felt great on stock, but I tried to,
[365.95] Tony: I tried adjusting things and it went wrong.
[369.95] Lee: You tried to push it only, didn't you?
[372.95] Tony: Yes.
[374.95] Tony: It's only on my turns.
[376.95] Tony: It flies really, I put up the P quite a lot and it flies,
[381.95] Tony: it flies better and more locked in.
[384.95] Tony: But when I turn, I get really bad oscillations.
[389.95] Tony: Is it on the really aggressive turns or quite smooth ones?
[392.95] Tony: On the aggressive ones, on the smooth ones, it's fine.
[395.95] Lee: So it's more like a D thing.
[397.95] Tony: Nice, slow, swoopy turns are fine.
[400.95] Tony: But it's just, when I turn really sharp, it holds its angles.
[405.95] Tony: I know it's not I.
[407.95] Tony: It just flutters on the way down and it actually,
[411.95] Tony: well, does it drop a bit or that might be me.
[413.95] Tony: It just, it flutters.
[416.95] Lee: See, that sounds like a game, doesn't it,
[418.95] Lee: when you do aggressive stops and stuff?
[421.95] Tony: It does a bit.
[422.95] Tony: I did start playing with the D,
[424.95] Tony: but then D you can muck about and start mucking up your motors
[427.95] Tony: and making it run hot and stuff like that.
[432.95] Tony: So I need more time.
[435.95] Tony: It got dark quick.
[436.95] Tony: It was wet.
[437.95] Tony: I was sitting on a wet bench.
[439.95] Tony: You know, it was over there.
[444.95] Lee: Speaking of darkness, actually, cameras,
[446.95] Lee: have either of you played with any of the night stuff from Runkam?
[450.95] Jack: Oh, I want one, no.
[453.95] Jack: I've got a night eagle and I've so far hasn't my place just yet,
[462.95] Jack: but I'm really impressed with it.
[464.95] Jack: I had all the lights off and you can kind of see.
[468.95] Jack: I think I need to adjust my contrast.
[471.95] Jack: I got my remote control, some like my TV and stuff like that,
[474.95] Jack: and was like pressing the buttons
[476.95] Jack: and you can actually see the infrared pattern of the LED flashing
[483.95] Jack: to get the signal to the device, which is really crazy.
[487.95] Jack: Oh, actually on the camera.
[489.95] Jack: Yeah, so you watch the screen
[491.95] Jack: and you'll press the button of the remote of your TV
[495.95] Jack: and you can see it like flash.
[497.95] Jack: I don't recommend it for anyone who's got epilepsy,
[500.95] Jack: but it is kind of cool to see.
[502.95] Tony: That's how I normally check my batteries in my remote with my mobile phone.
[507.95] Tony: I can turn the camera on and shine it at the remote
[511.95] Tony: to make sure I can see it flicking on and off.
[513.95] Lee: Yeah.
[514.95] Lee: But Jack, are you talking about looking at it like Tony's talking about
[517.95] Lee: or using the LED at the end of your remote
[520.95] Lee: to kind of illuminate the room so you can see it?
[522.95] Jack: It does both. It looks like strobe light.
[525.95] Jack: Yeah, you've got like a little weird pattern,
[527.95] Jack: kind of like eye shape.
[529.95] Jack: And yeah, you can see it flash onto things.
[534.95] Lee: Yep.
[535.95] Lee: I'm excited about that.
[536.95] Lee: We've got one here and I haven't got round to testing it up
[539.95] Lee: because we got one of those infrared flashlight things from the drone show
[545.95] Lee: and I'm just worried I'm going to get arrested
[548.95] Lee: if people see me running around in the middle of the field
[551.95] Lee: with all this kind of night vision electronic stuff.
[555.95] Jack: Yeah.
[556.95] Jack: I know because is it legal to fly at night without, you know,
[561.95] Jack: I ain't got a clue.
[563.95] Jack: Yeah, I don't know what you do to find out about that
[568.95] Lee: because like the CIA should be able to tell us that, shouldn't they?
[572.95] Lee: Next time we talk, one of us talks to them.
[574.95] Tony: As long as you've got a green light on the right
[576.95] Tony: and red light on the left, isn't it?
[578.95] Tony: Or is it?
[580.95] Lee: Oh, you mean the navigate strobe on the tail?
[584.95] Lee: Maybe, maybe that's all we need.
[589.95] Lee: That's it.
[590.95] Jack: All right.
[591.95] Jack: Speaking about the CIA, who here has been asked by people
[599.95] Jack: about the drone pilot license that apparently we're all going to have to take?
[603.95] Jack: I've read about it, but I haven't been asked about it.
[606.95] Jack: I have been asked about it today by people.
[609.95] Jack: Yeah.
[610.95] Jack: So, and also I have a little link by the smart survey from the,
[619.95] Jack: hang on, copy link.
[621.95] Jack: Andrew posted it up in the private pre-press let drone out show.
[627.95] Jack: Unlocking the UK's high tech economy,
[630.95] Jack: a concentration on the safe use drones in the UK.
[634.95] Jack: So apparently the BBC, Dom earlier on this morning, I believe,
[642.95] Jack: got a BBC radio interview about it.
[648.95] Jack: And yeah, so they're looking to make pilots take a test,
[655.95] Jack: you know, to be able to fly drones.
[658.95] Tony: For what reason?
[660.95] Tony: But for safety, because the ISIS aren't going to take the safety test.
[665.95] Tony: Well, you don't have to target just ISIS.
[668.95] Lee: I was going to say, Tony, you've gone straight to the bottom there, haven't you?
[673.95] Lee: There's probably a lot of other people around who get drones for Christmas
[677.95] Lee: who will fly responsibly that probably aren't also going to build up,
[681.95] Lee: you know, a bomb out of diesel barrels and park it outside the local Tesco.
[686.95] Jack: I know. Anyway, they're working on the technology of unmanned lorries.
[694.95] Jack: Really, you know, they're kind of, they're getting to drones, I think.
[699.95] Tony: Unmanned lorries can kill as well.
[702.95] Jack: Yeah, so I think we got bigger fish to fry than drones.
[706.95] Lee: So just take it a step back because we're starting to rat hole already.
[711.95] Tony: The question about the, I've got a question for you.
[714.95] Lee: You see, I'm well, I'm nominated grown up.
[717.95] Lee: So the question I've got for you guys is, do you honestly think if they bring in
[722.95] Lee: some kind of test that we all have to go and turn up at a field and fly
[726.95] Lee: and be able to hover it for a minute within a meter square or whatever,
[730.95] Lee: do you honestly think that's going to make drones safer in the UK?
[733.95] Tony: I think it's not.
[735.95] Lee: No.
[736.95] Lee: No, it's not.
[738.95] Jack: Not at all, really.
[740.95] Lee: It's not.
[742.95] Lee: I think everyone's kind of missed the point that the people who will actually
[745.95] Lee: go and do the test and not the people who potentially going to cause a problem
[749.95] Lee: in the first place.
[750.95] Tony: Exactly.
[751.95] Tony: I know it's all stupid, isn't it?
[753.95] Tony: Ridiculous, really.
[755.95] Jack: Where are the girls?
[758.95] Jack: Hang on.
[759.95] Jack: I haven't flown with the one on the show yet, but tests outside are awesome.
[766.95] Jack: It's illegal as long as you can see the quad.
[770.95] Jack: I.E. LED lights and apparently paragliders don't have to have a license.
[775.95] Jack: Look, the thing that makes me kind of go, what is all it does is cost us money.
[783.95] Jack: The people who are responsible and legitimate.
[790.95] Jack: That irritates me because if it isn't bad enough that we spend money on
[795.95] Jack: components and you have to drive out in the middle of nowhere and try not to injure
[799.95] Jack: people.
[800.95] Jack: We're paying the public liability insurance and then you just add a test to us.
[807.95] Jack: Is the test going to be renewable?
[809.95] Jack: Are they just tapping us for money?
[811.95] Jack: How hard is the test going to be and how does that affect newbies in the hobby?
[817.95] Jack: How do you go?
[820.95] Jack: I'm interested in this hobby.
[822.95] Jack: I'm going to try it out for a bit and then realize it's not really for me.
[826.95] Jack: If you've got to instantly do a test, how are you going to practice in order to pass
[833.95] Jack: the test?
[834.95] Jack: Maybe that's the plan.
[836.95] Jack: Yeah.
[837.95] Tony: I mean, I'm all for a intelligence test.
[840.95] Tony: Do you know what I mean?
[841.95] Jack: Like an IQ test like in, you know, like, you know, like with questions like, you know,
[848.95] Jack: like, do you think, where should you store your LiPo batteries in a fire safe bag in
[859.95] Jack: your mouth or in your cooker with your small child?
[866.95] Jack: Yeah.
[867.95] Jack: Yeah.
[868.95] Jack: You know, stuff like that, you know, like unbelievable, like, you know, newbies, bless
[874.95] Jack: them.
[875.95] Jack: We've all been there, have got new and innovative ways to like screw things up.
[879.95] Jack: And I'll give them that.
[881.95] Jack: But like, I don't know, it's not common knowledge.
[885.95] Jack: I mean, what next?
[887.95] Jack: You know, is it going to be like driving tests where we've got to hire a professional?
[892.95] Jack: It's like, I don't know, are the people like, what is it, drone school?
[898.95] Jack: Have they got in with the government?
[901.95] Jack: Is it just a sort of, you know, like, are we going to be there like learning, like GPS
[907.95] Jack: modes and that, you know, do you just, does Tony get a minus point for always having a
[916.95] Jack: throttle that's open constantly?
[918.95] Jack: Because like, I don't know how many people know about Tony, but Tony flies mode two.
[924.95] Jack: Right.
[925.95] Jack: And Tony's throttle is sprung like his pitch.
[931.95] Jack: So his throttle always wants to stay just around about mid.
[938.95] Jack: Now he thinks it's because he grew up, you know, with DJI and he likes a sprung throttle.
[947.95] Jack: Like this guy runs, he flies acro full on rate mode.
[953.95] Jack: Like, you know, like no stabilization.
[956.95] Jack: You're lucky if he's figuring out how to turn the gyro on.
[959.95] Jack: Right.
[960.95] Jack: But essentially Tony has got a brick on his accelerator.
[964.95] Jack: Like if he lets go, his quads just off completely.
[968.95] Tony: It's nice having that.
[970.95] Tony: Because like, you know, when you get an itch and you just let go and scratch it.
[977.95] Jack: But then he's not in control.
[979.95] Lee: So what we're saying is if we see Tony's quad take off towards the bottom of the field,
[983.95] Lee: then he might have had a stroke.
[985.95] Lee: Is that what we're saying?
[986.95] Lee: Yeah, basically.
[988.95] Jack: Right.
[989.95] Jack: I would just like to see the examiner, you know, if there is a test, my enjoyment, the
[994.95] Jack: only reason I'm not going to complain that much is I want to be present during Tony's
[1000.95] Jack: test.
[1001.95] Jack: Tony can't fly line of sight.
[1002.95] Jack: I'm not that good either.
[1004.95] Tony: I can now.
[1005.95] Tony: I've had practice.
[1007.95] Jack: Okay.
[1008.95] Jack: Tony can fly line of sight ish.
[1012.95] Jack: And then the other one is he's going to take one look at Tony's set up and go, no, you
[1017.95] Jack: know, like also like what, what are we going to be testing on?
[1021.95] Jack: Are they going to like, are they going to have to, does anyone done the BNUC test?
[1027.95] Jack: Because like I've heard rumors that you have to have, you have to have a like registered
[1034.95] Jack: passable quadcopter, you know, in order to do it.
[1038.95] Jack: And if you like, if you haven't got the CE marks on stuff, it has to be tested.
[1044.95] Tony: So like if you've read the man and no maps and loads of stuff.
[1049.95] Jack: Yeah.
[1050.95] Jack: Like how much are we going to be?
[1051.95] Jack: How much is this going to be relevant for a race squad?
[1053.95] Jack: Is it just going to be an absolute, you know, how much is it going to cost?
[1059.95] Lee: I think we've got to wait to find out, haven't we?
[1063.65] Lee: I mean, I did, I did my amateur radio license thing back in the days when somebody told
[1069.65] Lee: me that if I got it, I could use higher powered FPV equipment.
[1073.65] Lee: And that's not actually true because the radio stuff only covers ground based transmission.
[1078.65] Lee: So you know what?
[1079.65] Lee: It doesn't help at all.
[1080.65] Lee: But that was quite an interesting thing because that was like a weekend you went along, you
[1084.65] Lee: actually told some common sense, went through like a little workbook.
[1087.65] Lee: And at the end of it, you had to do an exam.
[1089.65] Lee: But I'd imagine that there'd also have to be some kind of practical for a quadcopter
[1093.65] Lee: thing.
[1094.65] Lee: I mean, I know most of the people that I fly with who are still learning would struggle
[1099.65] Lee: to do even the most, you know, like hovering a one meter box for two minutes.
[1104.65] Lee: You know, a lot of the people who are new to quadcopters would bloody struggle with
[1108.65] Lee: that unless you've got something like a really expensive high end DJI, GPS assisted mode,
[1114.65] Lee: you know, altitude, blah, blah, blah.
[1116.65] Lee: For the rest of us who are just using line of sight and careful throttle management,
[1120.65] Lee: that's, you know, that takes months of practice to be able to do.
[1124.65] Lee: So are you allowed to fly and get that level of proficiency before you did the test?
[1128.65] Lee: Or, you know, like Tony was saying, it's going to be interesting to see how it all works
[1134.65] Lee: out.
[1135.65] Lee: You know, I don't think it's fundamentally going to change the safety of the hobby in
[1139.65] Lee: the UK because the people who were going to abuse the quads and do daft things with them
[1144.65] Lee: aren't going to be the ones taking the test.
[1146.65] Jack: It's nuts, isn't it?
[1148.65] Jack: Like, you know, like why stop there?
[1153.65] Jack: You know, you're going to have to register your aircraft.
[1158.65] Jack: What happens if you want to sell it?
[1162.65] Jack: I don't know.
[1163.65] Jack: It's just it's such a strange concept because it's not like what happens.
[1168.65] Jack: Are you going to need to like show your license in order to buy a DJI Phantom at the store?
[1175.65] Jack: And then is that going to then push it black market where someone will buy one and then
[1181.65] Jack: sell it to someone who hasn't got a license for more money because they don't want to
[1185.65] Jack: get the license because they know that they're going to do something naughty with it.
[1191.65] Lee: Well, even if it's in the UK, it doesn't stop somebody going on a bang good or a gear
[1195.65] Lee: vest or one of those boys and just ordering a quad that those won't care whether or not
[1199.65] Lee: you've got an appropriate license.
[1200.65] Lee: They'll just assume that you'll do the right thing when you get it.
[1204.65] Lee: Yeah.
[1205.65] Lee: So yeah, it's got to be interesting.
[1207.65] Lee: It's I mean, we do need a little bit more regulation.
[1211.65] Lee: But unfortunately, I don't think that's going to help.
[1214.65] Lee: Yeah.
[1215.65] Lee: What do you think we need more regulation in?
[1219.65] Lee: Just to try and stop some of the silliness because the problem is is that if you look
[1223.65] Lee: at what's happened in America with the 250 gram limit, I don't think we need to go that
[1228.65] Lee: far.
[1229.65] Lee: But at the moment with the stuff that we've got, there's lots of people who are still
[1233.65] Lee: doing things that are getting reported.
[1236.65] Lee: I mean, how many incidents is it with people flying near aircraft?
[1241.65] Lee: You know, all that there needs to be a little bit more control around that and penalties.
[1247.65] Lee: But it's kind of how how do you enforce that?
[1250.65] Lee: And how do you make sure the right people are getting getting the get in the message?
[1255.65] Jack: I would say more regulation.
[1258.65] Jack: I would say more education, if anything, you know, I mean, I'm like, I'm like, do you know
[1267.65] Jack: what?
[1268.65] Jack: Like, we don't need a test.
[1269.65] Jack: You know, we could just show up somewhere and let you know, like, watch this presentation
[1274.65] Jack: or something or fill out a little survey, little question thing that observes like you
[1281.65] Jack: get a log in, log in, they show you the information, you tick through it and then you apparently
[1287.65] Jack: have done it.
[1288.65] Jack: Yeah.
[1289.65] Jack: You know, I thought it was plastic bags near aircraft.
[1293.65] Jack: There's no real I mean, Don brought up an interesting point.
[1298.65] Jack: Just keep HPI guy says leave the regulations, just kick the ass to the people that do that
[1304.65] Jack: stupid shit.
[1306.65] Jack: Dom said like there's a lot of these reports by pilots, pilots in the pilot's association,
[1315.65] Jack: and they're worried about the he believes that maybe a chance is that they're worried about
[1320.65] Jack: getting, you know, replaced by unmanned aircraft.
[1327.65] Jack: And like, you know, that their job is going to be taken over by, you know, by the technology
[1332.65] Jack: that we're using eventually.
[1334.65] Jack: So, you know, they kind of, you know, they're calling yellow car, you know, if they see it,
[1340.65] Jack: then it's then, you know, it's a yellow car and they're calling out, you know, it could
[1344.65] Jack: be a plastic bag or a UFO.
[1347.65] Jack: If Tony's got this tin foil hat on, you know, but Tony's not really worried about what a
[1354.65] Jack: pilot say anyway, because apparently they just spend their time flying in a circle anyway.
[1358.65] Jack: So, because like, apparently the earth's flat.
[1360.65] Jack: So like, you know, we don't actually travel anywhere, you know, and the sun's on a bit
[1365.65] Jack: of string and lizard people are in charge.
[1369.65] Jack: So, yeah, how is that chipped on your brain?
[1373.65] Jack: Anyway, Tony, I don't know, man.
[1382.65] Jack: I just I think I think the CIA is doing a good job of regulating us anyway.
[1388.65] Jack: Do you know what I mean?
[1389.65] Jack: I think I think they are.
[1390.65] Lee: I think I think the problem is, is that if if the common sense rules that we're all supposed
[1398.65] Lee: to adhere to don't work, then they will be forced to take action and do something a bit
[1404.65] Lee: tougher.
[1405.65] Lee: And that's that's the thing that I'm always worried about.
[1407.65] Lee: And the problem is, at the moment, is drones seem to be one of those things that if something
[1411.65] Lee: goes wrong, drones seem to be like the scapegoat.
[1414.65] Lee: So if a pilot, you know, if a pilot sees something white whizzing across his nose as he comes
[1418.65] Lee: into land, it's immediately reported as a as a drone.
[1422.65] Lee: Even it turns out to be, you know, a carrier bag from the local spa.
[1427.65] Lee: And the problem is, is that all the fact that it's a drone is heavily reported.
[1432.65] Lee: But the fact that they subsequently realize it was a Tesco bag from spa isn't as widely
[1437.65] Lee: talked about.
[1438.65] Lee: And you got people jumping on the bandwagon, you know, talking when it's on the radio,
[1442.65] Lee: talking about how many ever many hundred incidents, whatever an incident is.
[1446.65] Lee: And it just the more it goes along, the more or the harder it is for the for the regulatory
[1453.65] Lee: authorities to ignore it, isn't it?
[1455.65] Lee: That's that's the problem that we've got.
[1457.65] Jack: Yeah, I mean, Tony's a walking incident, just asking about when he put up his his fence.
[1465.65] Tony: Just cost me five hundred pounds.
[1468.65] Lee: And then and then he's like, did you make five hundred pounds out of a fence?
[1474.65] Tony: Me and my brother went through the gas mines.
[1478.65] Lee: That'll do it.
[1479.65] Jack: Yeah.
[1480.65] Jack: And then like later on, unrelated, I'm chatting to him in the car and stuff.
[1485.65] Jack: And he was like, you know, I had a house, you know, with X amount of rooms and stuff.
[1491.65] Jack: And my gas bill was cheaper.
[1493.65] Jack: And then I was like, you do realize you used a load of gas by piercing a hole in the in
[1499.65] Jack: the hose.
[1500.65] Jack: You know, you're still metered for that.
[1502.65] Tony: It wasn't coming out that fast, Jack.
[1507.65] Jack: I know that I'm still going to put it up your bill.
[1510.65] Jack: If you build your own drone, you know the regulations.
[1515.65] Jack: Yeah, maybe.
[1517.65] Jack: I think you I think you'll have I think you have like mechanical sympathy for your quads
[1522.65] Jack: and an understanding of how how it works.
[1525.65] Jack: But you know, you don't necessarily know, you know, because like out in the flying field,
[1531.65] Jack: you know, you you know that, you know, the weird thing is I can injure Tony because he's
[1537.65] Jack: under my control because I'm married to him.
[1540.65] Jack: And if I hit some some of the stranger, then that's not good.
[1545.65] Lee: You know, I mean, I think he's going back to your point.
[1548.65] Lee: I think you're absolutely right about the education thing, Jack.
[1550.65] Lee: I think that is.
[1551.65] Lee: Yeah.
[1552.65] Lee: I think it's probably our duty to help new pilots coming in, figure out what responsible
[1556.65] Lee: flying looks and feels like.
[1558.65] Jack: There's no there's no video for like I'm a newbie and this is this is what I want to
[1566.65] Jack: go into because you have to like you have to just divide it into sub categories.
[1570.65] Jack: You'd almost have to have like like a little bit of an advert of like this is a drone.
[1577.65] Jack: Are you interested in getting into drones?
[1579.65] Jack: And this is how you do it step by step by step.
[1582.65] Jack: And that will change between like like people go.
[1586.65] Jack: I get a lot of this.
[1587.65] Jack: I really want to get into drones.
[1589.65] Jack: And then the first question I have to ask is what do you want to do with it?
[1592.65] Jack: Do you know what I mean?
[1593.65] Jack: Like is it is it for photography?
[1594.65] Jack: Are you going to race here?
[1597.65] Jack: Are you just going to look at it?
[1598.65] Jack: You know, are you going to use it as a blender?
[1602.65] Jack: Do you want to entangle it in your girlfriend's hair?
[1606.65] Jack: I'm still talking about drones.
[1608.65] Jack: Yeah.
[1609.65] Jack: Yeah.
[1610.65] Jack: Totally.
[1611.65] Jack: The first incident where he flew it into is Mrs.
[1615.65] Jack: His hair.
[1616.65] Jack: And I've never I have never seen a woman with laser vision before till that day where she
[1624.09] Jack: literally burnt a hole in his face through sheer anger.
[1627.65] Jack: Shout out to Nicky.
[1630.65] Jack: Poor, poor, poor girl.
[1632.65] Jack: But yeah, it's I think that, you know, like with with the whole GPS, like, for instance,
[1639.09] Jack: it's like with a race squad, you'd be like, this is what you do.
[1642.41] Jack: You can't build it.
[1643.41] Jack: You know, don't build it too fast.
[1644.41] Jack: Don't fly it near people have respect if a pony comes round.
[1647.93] Lee: Yeah.
[1648.93] Lee: Don't use 25 milliwatt F2PV transmitter because you won't be able to use it in competition.
[1654.13] Jack: Yeah.
[1655.13] Jack: There's so much.
[1656.13] Jack: There's so much to cover.
[1657.61] Jack: Do you know what I mean?
[1658.65] Jack: It's like, what what do you do?
[1661.69] Jack: You know, like, do you know, like brand new newbie, I would say, like, go buy like a little
[1666.73] Jack: mini hubs and learn like the basics of what the sticks do, you know, in your house.
[1672.81] Jack: This is a battery.
[1674.33] Jack: It's made up of cells.
[1675.33] Jack: There's three of these stacked together.
[1677.37] Jack: Then you then you have to learn electronics.
[1680.65] Jack: You have to learn your pilot skill.
[1681.97] Jack: You have to learn the electronics.
[1683.65] Jack: Then you're learning where you can and can't fly.
[1686.81] Jack: Then you're you know, you're learning like, you know, how the weather affects you.
[1693.37] Jack: You know, loads of loads of different stuff, how to how to charge batteries.
[1696.97] Jack: And it's all there's so much to take on.
[1699.89] Jack: And it's it's it's very understandable why it can sort of like be overwhelming, you know,
[1706.05] Jack: and then you think you know everything and you don't I mean, I still don't know everything.
[1710.97] Lee: Well, that's the cool thing about the hobby.
[1713.01] Lee: Everything moves so fast is at the moment you think you've got a handle on it.
[1715.73] Lee: Somebody comes out with some new piece of technology and you've got to get and got to
[1718.49] Lee: get ahead around it.
[1719.61] Lee: But I think you you know, I always say to everybody that comes to me and says, oh, I
[1724.61] Lee: want to get a quad cop.
[1725.61] Lee: So what should I buy?
[1726.61] Lee: And if the answer, you know, if you ever flown before and if the answer is no, then I absolutely
[1731.61] Lee: do the same.
[1732.61] Lee: I usually the Hubsan next fall has been the one that I've always said to everyone.
[1735.21] Lee: Have a go with that.
[1736.21] Lee: Because if you buy one of them for what 30 quid or whatever it is, and it bores you to
[1740.61] Lee: tears within two hours, then it's not the hobby for you.
[1744.49] Lee: There's no point going out and buying a, I don't know, a Hollybro X1 or, you know,
[1749.25] Lee: an X jacket or one of these ready to fly racing machines, because if you can't, you know what
[1755.33] Lee: it's like.
[1756.33] Lee: I'm sure you've seen pilots as well that spend a load of money, get into it and they just
[1759.93] Lee: they don't get grabbed in the same way as other people do.
[1762.69] Lee: It's like any hobby, I guess, isn't it?
[1764.73] Jack: Yeah, I mean, like I remember when I first bought my my Hubsan, I like, you know, I had
[1771.69] Jack: like a media like buyer's regret because it wasn't really what, you know, what I wanted
[1778.81] Jack: it for.
[1779.81] Jack: You know, like I only now from this, my little segue, like I'm flying like I now and if I
[1786.93] Jack: like remembered what it was about, which was like what initially why I got in there with
[1792.85] Jack: whereas like I wanted to fly explore and, you know, like work with the technology.
[1802.53] Lee: And that's that's so glad you brought up I now because I did want to talk to you about
[1806.57] Lee: that.
[1807.57] Jack: Yeah.
[1808.57] Jack: So, you know, I mean, we me and Tony had a 27 minute flight.
[1813.89] Jack: It was a good laugh.
[1815.97] Jack: You know, I'm starting to trust that quad it more and more quad I don't think we should
[1821.29] Tony: use it as bonfire night material anymore.
[1824.01] Tony: I really like it.
[1826.13] Jack: I get I get a lot of jokes.
[1827.61] Jack: You know, I mean, I just the wooden one is a copter.
[1832.21] Jack: We call it poo copter or or bonfire kindling the kindling copter as well.
[1839.01] Jack: Like, you know, I had some hipsters who were smoking weed at God, where is it?
[1846.61] Jack: Preston Park.
[1847.61] Jack: And they were like, wow, you made that out of rubbish.
[1849.97] Jack: And I was like, they're right.
[1852.25] Jack: Yeah.
[1853.25] Tony: But, you know, it's all the most expensive units, man.
[1859.53] Tony: That's like better than any of the DJI stuff, isn't it?
[1864.65] Tony: I know.
[1865.65] Jack: There's two things that I really love about well, there actually is I'd say three about
[1877.77] Jack: the hobby.
[1878.77] Jack: And the number one thing is annoying DJI owners, you know, like the there's two methods for
[1886.93] Jack: annoying DJI owners is if you've got your mini race quad, you give them your spare set
[1891.41] Jack: of goggles and you're like, check this out.
[1893.77] Jack: And you fly like a mental person, they're like, holy, holy Christ.
[1897.77] Jack: And they think you're a pilot from Top Gun.
[1900.21] Jack: And they're like, I've literally bought a camera attached to a balloon and it flies
[1905.73] Jack: like a bus.
[1907.05] Jack: You know, so they feel a bit of devastation.
[1909.09] Jack: The next way to really annoy them is build exactly what they have out of wood from parts
[1918.09] Jack: found on your floor.
[1919.33] Jack: I mean, the ESCs haven't got heat shrink on them.
[1922.77] Jack: It's electrical tape.
[1924.77] Jack: You know, like the camera is like cheap.
[1928.65] Jack: Everything's like gray and pink.
[1930.85] Jack: That's the two colors.
[1932.65] Jack: It's like flying through an original Game Boy.
[1937.89] Jack: It's horrendous.
[1938.89] Jack: I mean, the GPA lump of words, you know what I mean?
[1943.53] Jack: And then there's there's tabs, there's more cable ties than any SM, SNM session that I've
[1950.69] Jack: ever known of.
[1951.69] Jack: Shout out to Matt Hillier, little bugger like, you know, they're just like a mass of wires
[1959.57] Jack: and there's a fossil stuff strap and you know, like it's just so I haven't even balanced
[1965.93] Jack: the props.
[1966.93] Jack: It's horrendous.
[1967.93] Jack: Anything over three quarters throttle is like a battery operated sex aid.
[1972.85] Lee: Jack, can I just say that is very nostalgic watching you hold that?
[1978.25] Lee: Because that's what we were all flying two and a half, three years ago.
[1981.17] Lee: We thought that was red hot.
[1982.65] Lee: Yeah.
[1983.65] Lee: Yeah.
[1984.65] Lee: And it worked really well.
[1986.41] Lee: So go on then.
[1987.41] Lee: What's been your experience with INAV on that thing?
[1989.37] Lee: Because what was that an SP three in the middle of it?
[1991.77] Jack: Yeah.
[1992.77] Jack: Genuine SPF three 60 quid for Dominic Clifton.
[1996.77] Jack: Hello to Dominic.
[1998.89] Jack: Yep.
[1999.89] Jack: Mr. Clean Fly.
[2002.69] Jack: You've got a choice.
[2003.69] Jack: You either come on the show or I will.
[2007.13] Jack: You'll start promoting clones.
[2008.65] Jack: Yeah.
[2009.65] Jack: Yeah.
[2010.65] Jack: Start.
[2011.65] Jack: I know.
[2012.65] Jack: Yeah.
[2013.65] Jack: I'm still Laura.
[2015.09] Jack: Yeah.
[2016.09] Jack: Take a flying.
[2017.09] Jack: You won't either.
[2018.09] Jack: Jack's got words.
[2019.09] Jack: Yeah.
[2020.09] Jack: Very clever.
[2021.09] Jack: You should see how high it goes.
[2023.61] Jack: We did that and use the return to home without calibration.
[2028.85] Jack: Yep.
[2029.85] Jack: That's that's what we did.
[2030.85] Jack: So I've done the whole fly it, flip it in in acro, try and totally mess up the GPS I
[2039.73] Jack: and it still returned to home.
[2041.81] Jack: I flew really high, you know, achieved like a really high maximum point and it just flies
[2049.53] Jack: back at what level it came at home at.
[2053.49] Jack: What else did it did it do?
[2056.57] Jack: I haven't calibrated the ACC properly.
[2059.69] Jack: So when you go into level mode, it's tilted to the left slightly.
[2065.65] Jack: All the props are unbalanced.
[2066.65] Jack: I got terrible vibration.
[2067.65] Jack: It keeps you on your toes though, doesn't it?
[2071.85] Jack: It's horrendous.
[2073.09] Jack: It is horrendous.
[2075.05] Jack: It flies like a fiesta that's been in a category category D right off.
[2080.69] Tony: Yeah.
[2081.69] Jack: Cat D.
[2082.69] Tony: It does fly for 20 different minutes.
[2086.65] Jack: Yeah.
[2087.65] Jack: And it's a good laugh like, you know, and I'm there and I'm like hovering it into the
[2093.13] Jack: barn of like Hidden Valley and like using it to explore.
[2101.25] Jack: And it was, you know, really sort of like reminds me of the old flight test days.
[2105.45] Jack: You know, it's not, you know, it's not about speed.
[2108.29] Jack: It's about like buggering off and if you lose it, being like, can I be even bothered to
[2112.45] Jack: go pick it up by the gradable?
[2116.77] Jack: Some hedgehog will make a lovely home out of that.
[2119.93] Lee: So using the magnetometer on board the flight controller, you haven't done any wackiness
[2124.73] Lee: externally or any of that jazz?
[2126.69] Jack: No, no, I have not.
[2128.37] Jack: It's just the straight normal one.
[2130.85] Jack: Admittedly, I've moved it about two and a half centimeters away from the, actually three
[2138.05] Jack: because the bottom plate's the power distribution board on that.
[2142.25] Jack: So it's a good three centimeters at least from the power distribution board.
[2146.37] Jack: And I've got, you know, I've got the micro minimum OSD running on the top plate.
[2151.61] Jack: That does have a little bit of noise line with it.
[2155.37] Jack: But yeah, all in all, I'm very impressed with iNav.
[2158.41] Jack: And I was shocked to hear Trappy say that he uses iNav on his wings.
[2163.93] Jack: And I messaged that to Chris, iForce2D, and he was very interested in it because you were
[2170.33] Jack: saying about the differences on how the GPS works between flying wings and quads, where
[2179.73] Jack: the wing will use triangulation, it will get close to a satellite and then turn and then
[2185.25] Jack: go to the next satellite and then turn when it gets.
[2188.29] Lee: Yeah.
[2189.29] Lee: The cool thing with any fixed wing, of course, is that you don't have to try and figure out
[2192.73] Lee: which way you fly in because you're all way, if you're flying forward, well, either flying
[2196.69] Lee: forward or you're not flying.
[2198.37] Lee: So any, you know, the direction that you're going in is always going to be where the nose
[2201.85] Lee: is.
[2202.85] Lee: So you don't need the compass at all, which is kind of a bit funky, but we just about started
[2206.93] Lee: playing with it in here.
[2207.93] Lee: I'm really excited that you've got it flying, even in that, you know, the wooden copter
[2214.69] Lee: of death.
[2215.69] Lee: You can say it.
[2216.69] Lee: Say it.
[2217.69] Lee: It's poo copter.
[2218.69] Lee: Okay.
[2219.69] Lee: Even if you got it working in poo copter, if I can, if I can stick it in a nice frame
[2222.93] Lee: and stuff in here and replace something like clean flight with iNav and stick a GPS on
[2227.61] Lee: it, just like we used to with the, cause the thing is I've added GPS is to loads of
[2231.39] Lee: flight controllers, but the only thing I could bloody do with it was have the GPS coordinates
[2235.61] Lee: on the onscreen display, which is nice, but that's not really the point.
[2240.89] Lee: It sounds like we've almost got what we had back in eight bit multi-wee days, which I'm
[2244.65] Lee: excited about.
[2245.65] Lee: Cause I love that.
[2247.25] Jack: Yeah.
[2248.25] Jack: I, it, it worked really well.
[2250.09] Jack: I remember seeing that and just being like, wow, you know, and that's an eight bit controller.
[2255.65] Jack: Yeah.
[2256.65] Jack: Multi-we flip.
[2257.65] Jack: That's crazy.
[2258.65] Tony: You know, I was like, how the hell, you know, I don't believe it in GPS, don't you?
[2265.17] Jack: Yeah.
[2266.17] Jack: I know the earth's flat.
[2267.17] Jack: Yeah.
[2268.17] Jack: I know.
[2269.17] Jack: If you leave it long enough, it will fly to the edge and hit men brain.
[2271.77] Jack: I know.
[2272.77] Jack: Yeah.
[2273.77] Jack: But I, you know, I'm, I'm, I am thoroughly impressed with it.
[2281.53] Jack: I've got to, I've got to give it to you.
[2283.81] Tony: Is it there?
[2284.81] Tony: Is it?
[2285.81] Tony: How much is it?
[2286.81] Tony: Yeah.
[2287.81] Jack: I know that the only, the only thing I am like mentioning earlier on that I'm considering
[2292.85] Jack: testing it on is I might have to go get a clone board and see whether that makes any
[2297.89] Jack: difference because I've got a genuine clean flight boards.
[2301.37] Jack: I wonder if any of the components, you know, slight, a slightly cheaper compass or a magnetometer,
[2309.69] Jack: you know, and, um, uh, a cheaper barometer would make any difference.
[2315.17] Tony: How expensive is the iron have compared to buy in a, um, the DJI set up you can buy just
[2324.37] Tony: the flight controller and the GPS.
[2326.41] Jack: Yeah.
[2327.41] Jack: I mean, my flight controller when it was new was 60 quid and it's just sat on, you know,
[2333.93] Jack: in my drawer for ages.
[2335.93] Jack: And then you're looking at, I think the GPS was about 20 pounds.
[2341.21] Lee: Yeah.
[2342.21] Lee: 20, 25 quid for the GPS, an STM 32 F3 based flight controller for what 30, 40 quid tops.
[2348.93] Lee: Yeah.
[2349.93] Lee: Yeah.
[2350.93] Lee: Is this a genuine one?
[2351.93] Lee: Well, it depends which ones you're talking about because everybody's got STM 32 F3 based
[2357.45] Lee: flight controllers.
[2358.45] Jack: Aren't they?
[2359.45] Jack: Yeah.
[2360.45] Jack: I'm just trying to think of what would be the best board to do it with like a genuine
[2364.87] Jack: non-clone board, you know, cause you were talking about the F1 being like really obsolete
[2370.41] Jack: and just,
[2371.41] Lee: Well, I think anything with an F1 with iNav is probably is not going to be a great option
[2377.23] Lee: just because it'll run out of horsepower.
[2379.87] Jack: Yeah.
[2380.87] Jack: So I don't know, like I just, I'm, I'm enjoying it anyway, but, um, yeah, I've, I've, I've
[2389.19] Jack: been deliberately trying to, uh, trying to mess it up and, you know, not having much
[2394.23] Jack: success really, but I'm sure I'll find a way.
[2397.83] Jack: I even let Tony ever go.
[2400.07] Jack: So and Tony's really good at breaking stuff.
[2404.31] Lee: That's because he's used to the throttle, mate.
[2406.15] Lee: That's all that is.
[2407.15] Lee: It's just, you know, it's not sprung.
[2410.87] Tony: Then I can't fly it.
[2412.87] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[2413.87] Lee: That's not his fault.
[2414.87] Lee: That's what he's learned on.
[2415.87] Tony: It is.
[2417.23] Tony: He's giving away one trade secrets now.
[2420.27] Lee: So bottom line then, Jack, the iNav tick at the moment.
[2428.31] Lee: So cause we're just about to throw a board in a machine and start flashing and playing
[2433.87] Lee: with the GPS stuff.
[2434.95] Lee: So I'm getting excited about this now you've, uh, you've given me a real, cause the thing
[2439.91] Lee: is you don't see a lot of stuff about iNav in the forums and things, do you?
[2443.43] Lee: It's kind of the, um, it's always always the bridesmaid, never the bride.
[2447.43] Lee: When people talk about clean, clean flight forks.
[2450.67] Jack: Yeah.
[2451.67] Jack: Like, yeah, I, you know, like equally I'm kind of sad that like, you know, clean flight,
[2457.67] Jack: I mean, you know, Dom spent a lot of time working on the new board and he's got like
[2462.83] Jack: the nice new, you know, you know, ability to turn the, um, uh, the VTX off with a switch
[2471.27] Jack: on the Taranis and stuff like that.
[2472.95] Jack: And he's come up with a new board, but it's just, everything's just taking ages to like
[2478.27] Jack: update on there, you know, implement new, new things on there.
[2482.75] Jack: And I just, yeah, it's, you know, such a shame when the GPS did, did break.
[2489.67] Jack: I mean, admittedly you're limited by two, two different, uh, GPS parks, which sucks.
[2498.63] Lee: I'm probably just going to see what's in the spare spin because you can set pretty
[2505.83] Lee: much anything, any NMEA or you blocks GPS is going to work series eight or series nine
[2511.59] Lee: is probably best.
[2512.59] Lee: Well, I mean, we've got really old crappy series six and series seven stuff still kicking
[2516.91] Lee: around that I used to use all the time really successfully with multi-way and I've still
[2521.67] Lee: got all that, you know, every time we got a new flight controller, it'd be like, Oh,
[2526.19] Lee: bloody, I want, am I going to put this on now?
[2527.87] Lee: So I'd take a multi-way off something and stick a new flight controller on that.
[2531.99] Lee: So I've got all these GPS is around.
[2534.13] Lee: So I might see if I can get some of the slightly older stuff working because so long as you
[2538.15] Lee: got half reasonable lock, I mean, that'll be a bit of a test, wouldn't it?
[2541.99] Lee: See if something like, uh, um, and yeah, a NIO seven or one of the old serious ones,
[2548.03] Lee: the six M's or one of those guys had worked with it should do in theory.
[2552.67] Lee: Yeah.
[2553.67] Jack: I think that's my next, my next venture really.
[2559.27] Jack: Yeah.
[2560.27] Tony: Cause you can't really fly wings, couldn't you project?
[2562.03] Tony: So it might help you.
[2563.75] Jack: I've got issues.
[2564.75] Jack: I'm actually killed a tech sumo.
[2567.87] Lee: Why was all going tickety-boo when you were having a whale of a time?
[2573.43] Jack: What have you done?
[2574.43] Jack: Uh, you, you, VTX problems, basically, um, yeah, it blames it on the, well, it's a bit
[2582.19] Jack: difficult to fly when you can't see.
[2585.07] Jack: So yeah.
[2586.07] Lee: Well, you just, you just prep out on you and then it was a bit of a, yeah, with the ground.
[2592.83] Jack: It was pretty much, I might put in half about four times, like more than that, like it's
[2600.59] Jack: been in half more, more times than that.
[2603.07] Jack: So it's not good.
[2605.39] Lee: Hot glue and tape are wonderful things.
[2606.95] Lee: Jack.
[2607.95] Lee: I'm sure it was 75% hot glue by the time he finally retired it.
[2612.63] Lee: It was, it weighed about two kilograms.
[2614.79] Tony: Yeah.
[2615.79] Tony: It's heavier.
[2616.79] Jack: Yeah.
[2617.79] Jack: Mine, mine did start to feel a bit like a manhole cover.
[2623.63] Jack: Fine.
[2624.63] Jack: I'd like a green Christmas dazzle, naughty boy.
[2631.03] Jack: Um, yeah.
[2632.19] Jack: What, what are you looking forward to next year in flying?
[2637.75] Lee: Is it stuff that you can talk about at the moment, we're playing a lot with FPV Sims
[2643.15] Lee: actually.
[2644.15] Lee: Um, and they seem to be getting an awful lot better.
[2647.91] Lee: My flying isn't, but, but, um, but I'm hoping that that we'll be able to start some videos
[2654.87] Lee: on that soon.
[2655.87] Lee: They've been really good.
[2656.87] Lee: I'd love to get it to find one that's got a really good online mode that we could all
[2661.43] Lee: get onto and race virtually, even if we couldn't get together and race physically.
[2666.03] Lee: Yeah.
[2667.79] Lee: That'll be fun.
[2669.43] Lee: That'll be cool.
[2670.43] Lee: Hopefully I've got, I've got one lined up.
[2672.23] Lee: So when you do a little bit more testing, the thing is that evolving so quickly is every
[2676.23] Lee: time I go back to the manufacturer and say, all right, thanks very much.
[2679.67] Lee: Uh, what are you doing with this?
[2681.11] Lee: They go, Oh, we're about to do an update on that.
[2683.79] Lee: Don't do that yet.
[2685.11] Lee: So um, so what the one I really like that they're about to release a major update.
[2690.05] Lee: So we're kind of hanging on for that.
[2692.23] Lee: The other thing we've got, we've got some stuff coming from Trappy.
[2695.19] Lee: So those guys have got some cool stuff coming out.
[2698.39] Lee: Um, so we'll be playing with the, the, the new TBS race timer.
[2702.39] Lee: Have you seen that?
[2704.39] Jack: Yep.
[2705.39] Lee: I've seen that.
[2706.39] Lee: I've seen how expensive it is.
[2708.83] Lee: I haven't said how much is it because we, we, we're getting a, a pre-pro sample to look
[2713.03] Lee: at.
[2714.03] Lee: I think it was about a thousand quid wasn't it?
[2716.47] Lee: No, no, that's not the one I'm talking about.
[2718.59] Lee: The one I'm talking about looks like, you know, like the neuralizer for men in black,
[2722.51] Lee: a fat, one of them with five lights on the bottom, he's got the full race, um, system
[2728.63] Lee: which looks like a little brick with loads of USB ports on the back.
[2731.87] Lee: I think that's the one you're talking about.
[2733.87] Lee: Yeah.
[2734.87] Lee: Um, and then they got this little thing which connects to your Android, Android phone or,
[2739.43] Lee: um, your phone pocket.
[2742.59] Lee: What's mine must've been just been released.
[2745.43] Jack: Yeah.
[2746.43] Jack: Yeah.
[2747.43] Lee: You just stick it by the gate and as your quad goes past, basically it knows who's
[2752.35] Lee: transmitting on what frequent FPV frequency and it kind of uses the FPV frequency to
[2757.63] Lee: time the laps.
[2758.63] Lee: Um, and then that all goes back to, to the app app to keep your lap times done.
[2762.87] Tony: We're going to play that sounds really exciting.
[2765.35] Tony: That does sound good because it's better than, uh, on soldering your quad ready for race
[2769.95] Tony: day, putting and finding your five volt in to put your timer on and all that rubbish.
[2774.99] Lee: Yeah.
[2775.99] Tony: Or turning up and finding that the user, yeah, I hate it all that I want to find somewhere
[2782.03] Tony: to put it.
[2783.03] Tony: Is it going to be on left or right of all that rubbish or that I know.
[2788.47] Jack: And then half the time it doesn't read anyway.
[2790.91] Tony: Yeah.
[2791.91] Jack: And then you have to fly through exactly the same day to get it to, oh man.
[2796.95] Tony: And you can't, but you have to fly through level, not, not on a, not an angle because
[2803.19] Tony: I flew through an angle at the nationals and it didn't weren't counting.
[2809.08] Lee: So we'll, we'll see what this, how this one actually works.
[2811.6] Lee: It sounds like it's got a little bit of, um, of black magic in it and voodoo.
[2815.96] Lee: So I need to figure out how it, I've actually got the guy's name at TBS.
[2819.3] Lee: So when it's here, I can figure out what it actually doesn't tell you.
[2822.64] Tony: Does it just count one quad or eight quads or whatever?
[2829.64] Lee: From what I understand Tony and caveat, um, you know, it's something trap and I would
[2833.6] Lee: talk about very quickly.
[2835.12] Lee: Um, it looks like you basically tell it which, uh, channels and frequencies everybody's on
[2841.02] Lee: and assign the name of the pilot to that channel and frequency.
[2844.78] Lee: And then there's that channel and frequency goes past and it detects the peak.
[2848.82] Lee: That's the point it measures the lap.
[2850.14] Lee: Um, and it, and it then pushes that to the app and the apps, the thing that then says,
[2853.62] Lee: all right, that's channel F seven is Tony.
[2857.0] Lee: So here's his lap time.
[2858.46] Tony: So that sounds good.
[2861.02] Tony: We could have a massive TV in the field as well.
[2863.82] Tony: You know, we're going to do that now, don't you?
[2865.5] Tony: We're going to have a big TV in the field.
[2867.7] Tony: Some of Brad as Brad as we'll reverse, they'll be a TV in the back with all our racing information
[2874.66] Tony: on the,
[2875.66] Lee: Oh my God, my, my ride's still going.
[2879.7] Lee: Cause what you want is somebody to pimp a van, don't you?
[2881.58] Lee: With the doors open at the back and big screens come out with the subwoofers.
[2885.74] Jack: I know.
[2886.74] Jack: I knew this like it guy called like Nick, um, and, uh, he, he had like, uh, he bought
[2894.54] Jack: like a little TV with him, a little analog TV and he was running it off battery power
[2899.42] Jack: and it's really, it was awesome because he would hold it out in front of you and you'd
[2903.7] Jack: be watching yourself fly through the TV.
[2909.54] Jack: So you were FPV in, does that make sense?
[2916.62] Jack: Yeah.
[2917.62] Jack: Wow.
[2918.62] Jack: Okay.
[2919.62] Jack: So it really matter.
[2921.1] Jack: Yeah.
[2922.1] Jack: You could see your quad hovering and you were watching your bizarre, really, really bizarre
[2930.26] Jack: through.
[2931.26] Jack: Yeah.
[2932.26] Jack: I wish I had it on camera, but I didn't, you know, I, I, I weren't hitting record.
[2938.74] Jack: It was really back in the day.
[2940.02] Jack: I think that was like mini air show one that wasn't a mini air show.
[2945.26] Jack: It was the first time that in valley and it was on the line of sight, um, thing, you
[2951.58] Jack: know, and he had, yeah, just a little TV.
[2954.06] Jack: It was like a 20 odd inch TV with a receiver on it.
[2958.02] Jack: And it was just really good.
[2959.02] Jack: He just used to prop it on the ground and, you know, chill.
[2964.14] Lee: I like that idea.
[2965.14] Lee: That's very good.
[2966.14] Lee: We got it.
[2967.14] Lee: Yeah.
[2968.14] Lee: The last couple of things that may, we'll probably, we'll probably give around some
[2969.82] Lee: more cameras.
[2970.82] Lee: There's loads of new FPV cameras coming out, um, that I can't talk about yet, but we'll
[2975.42] Lee: be getting them here and having to play with those.
[2977.5] Lee: And there's a couple of new flying gadgets and, uh, some new goggles and stuff that we'll
[2983.54] Lee: be looking at in January, February two that I can't talk about yet.
[2986.7] Lee: So the start of the year is going as just like the end of last, uh, this year is going
[2991.46] Lee: to be really busy, but it just, it's just when you look back on all the stuff that we've
[2995.46] Lee: done over to over this year and what we, and how the hobbies come on, I can't wait to see
[3000.74] Lee: what we get up to next year.
[3002.5] Tony: It never stops.
[3003.5] Tony: Does it?
[3004.5] Lee: It's not slowing down either, is it, Tony?
[3008.22] Lee: It just, you keep thinking, right?
[3010.02] Lee: We've reached a plateau.
[3011.02] Lee: It's gonna, and then, then the, someone else will have another bit of innovation.
[3014.98] Lee: And, um, you know, I'm with Jack on the not closing the open source stuff too much.
[3019.58] Lee: Cause I think that stifles innovation, but at the moment it just, yeah.
[3023.38] Lee: Every time you think, okay, this is getting a bit boring.
[3025.78] Lee: Somebody sends you an email or drops you a line and you, and you look at the products
[3029.46] Lee: and go, Oh, wow.
[3032.14] Lee: That's awesome.
[3033.14] Lee: Yeah.
[3034.14] Lee: That's the stuff that I thought we were, thought we were getting done that I had to compromise
[3036.78] Lee: on and it's kind of coming around now.
[3039.18] Tony: I'm looking forward to HD, but HD, better HD, better than HD works.
[3045.06] Tony: Yeah.
[3046.06] Tony: So maybe next year, do you reckon next year, I mean, I would be crazy.
[3054.34] Tony: He said he's, he's talking to Connex and he's, he's, uh, something with their antennas,
[3061.7] Tony: make them a bit smaller and stuff.
[3064.74] Lee: More sensitive.
[3065.74] Lee: Well, did you, what did you guys think of the Connex stuff at the drone show?
[3070.14] Lee: Cause I was watching some of the racing and trying to follow it on those big screens.
[3075.54] Lee: Good.
[3076.54] Jack: They didn't get the Connex working.
[3077.54] Tony: Yeah.
[3078.54] Tony: I don't think they, or did they do one race?
[3081.22] Tony: I thought I don't recall.
[3082.74] Tony: I've seen it indoors and it looks better than using any analog indoors, put it that
[3088.54] Tony: way.
[3089.54] Tony: I'd rather run a Connex system indoors than an analog indoor.
[3094.38] Jack: The only thing I saw was, you know, the indoor bit now and again, they would have like a
[3098.98] Jack: quad inside the middle part where the, the race cars were, because that was netted off
[3105.74] Jack: as well.
[3106.74] Jack: And they had, they had something running Connex there and cut the long story short, it froze
[3112.34] Jack: out and the guy crashed and, uh, you know, and that, that, that was, I was watching it
[3117.38] Jack: with my buddy Dan and, um, yeah, that's, that's, that was my first impression of it, that the
[3123.74] Jack: screen went green and, you know, all glitchy and that was it.
[3128.78] Lee: So, yeah, that's the only thing I don't like with the Connex kit we've got here.
[3132.78] Lee: When it, when it starts to misbehave, you know, like in analog, you get that little
[3136.42] Lee: bit of snow and the crackly and anything, Oh, I'm pushing it.
[3139.14] Lee: I'll turn around.
[3141.1] Lee: The Connex just seems to have a really, really thin line of tolerance where it's like, Oh,
[3145.7] Lee: it's working.
[3146.7] Lee: It's great.
[3147.7] Lee: It's great.
[3148.7] Lee: It's great.
[3149.7] Lee: And then, and then the whole, like whole blocks freeze.
[3152.54] Lee: And then, and then you've got to try and pray that it's going to come back before you hit
[3157.18] Lee: the ground.
[3158.18] Lee: And it just, I just, I want more of more of a warning that I'm going to push it because
[3164.42] Lee: it just seems to go from like full strength to nothing very, very quickly.
[3167.9] Lee: I don't know whether it's something I'm doing wrong or it's the antennas, but watching
[3171.58] Lee: the racing at the drone show, they seem to have a couple of problems in there as well
[3174.9] Lee: on the Saturday.
[3175.9] Lee: Um, you know, with the interference and the crackling, I think, mind you, it was quite
[3180.02] Lee: a busy, there's lots of radios and frequency interference and I think they were turning
[3185.1] Lee: off some of the wifi at one point on the Saturday, weren't they?
[3188.34] Lee: Yeah.
[3189.34] Lee: It's just, I know Connex were supporting it, but I just, I just wanted it to have been
[3193.86] Lee: such a nice thing thing to watch the racing in HD and I came away, you know, just feeling
[3199.46] Lee: like it wasn't a great bit of promotion for them.
[3203.14] Tony: No, it wasn't.
[3204.14] Tony: I don't think, and the worst thing is we're all going to have to buy all new goggles and
[3208.46] Tony: everything.
[3209.46] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[3210.46] Tony: Yeah.
[3211.46] Lee: Well, to be fair, I'm, I'm, I'm a big fan of the analog FPV anyway, and I was six 40
[3217.74] Lee: by four 80.
[3218.74] Lee: We're talking about VGA, you know, back from the bloody nineties when we got computers,
[3222.74] Lee: but, um, I'm, I'm quite happy with that with a really nice camera on a sunny day and with
[3228.1] Lee: off decent goggles, I'm completely immersed.
[3230.7] Lee: I know it's not as nice as HD and you notice when you go back, but for me, that's still
[3235.18] Lee: a lovely experience FPV and like that.
[3237.38] Tony: Yeah, it is.
[3238.38] Tony: But I really like coming home and editing all my footage from my HD cam, but like, oh,
[3243.94] Tony: I'm trying to learn to flow about a HD cam anymore.
[3247.46] Tony: So it's really light and stuff, but it'd be nice to have the video footage from my Connex
[3252.58] Tony: that you can record, take home, and you know, it's HD and you haven't had that extra, you
[3258.38] Tony: know, a bit of weight or whatever you go through and that's right.
[3261.42] Lee: So what do you mean?
[3262.42] Lee: Like a Mobius or a run cam or something or a GoPro, right?
[3265.38] Tony: Yeah.
[3266.38] Tony: So get rid of, get getting rid of that and spending your money on the Connex and being
[3270.78] Tony: able to record the HD racing of the day just through the camera.
[3277.58] Lee: And see now that it's things, it's things like that, that I'm, I'm sad they didn't put
[3281.58] Lee: on the current pro site, which, you know, I can SD cards on the transmitter so it could
[3286.62] Lee: record locally.
[3287.62] Lee: There's a couple of cool little things that could have done, which would have made it
[3289.98] Lee: so much nicer.
[3290.98] Tony: Definitely.
[3291.98] Tony: Yeah.
[3292.98] Lee: So what are you looking forward to next year, Jack?
[3297.78] Jack: I ain't got a clue.
[3300.58] Jack: Like the stuff that I can talk about.
[3303.46] Jack: I don't know.
[3304.46] Jack: I mean, um, I, I'm really sort of like grateful for what you've got.
[3307.42] Jack: I'm really grateful for D shot.
[3308.98] Jack: I'm really looking forward to the, um, night camera.
[3312.98] Jack: Um, um, and also I'm looking forward to, you know, like the, um, old infrared, um, floodlight
[3321.1] Jack: that you've got.
[3322.1] Jack: Yeah.
[3323.1] Jack: That, that's, that's something I'm excited for.
[3325.38] Jack: Um, you know, I'm looking forward to, um, freestyling the Brighton pier.
[3332.02] Jack: Um, you know, I want to get around to doing that.
[3335.78] Tony: And uh, the old one, you're talking about.
[3338.54] Jack: Yeah.
[3339.54] Jack: Yeah.
[3340.54] Jack: The, yeah.
[3341.54] Jack: The, the burnout one I'm going to try and do, uh, I like it kind of drew a crude frame
[3348.26] Jack: out and Dan Upton has been designing that for ages, which I'm really grateful for.
[3354.46] Jack: So I'm going to be playing as soon as I get that back, I've got to make a jig and I'm
[3358.38] Jack: going to be playing with the storm, uh, gimbal.
[3363.02] Jack: So I'm kind of looking forward to that.
[3365.06] Jack: I might not be, I might actually be wanting to just die because if I can't get the thing
[3369.3] Jack: to work, but, um, so yeah, like poo copter Mark two with, uh, with a gimbal, I'm kind
[3378.5] Jack: of looking forward to that.
[3379.5] Jack: And, um, working on the INF with a wing, you know, so that's kind of, they're my projects
[3385.58] Jack: for next year, basically that have kind of bled over from this year, um, better batteries.
[3392.9] Jack: You know, the ones from over lander and I just got 10 of them.
[3397.7] Jack: Yeah.
[3398.06] Jack: Have you got the new ones though?
[3399.82] Tony: No, they're, they're, the 1600 are coming out in February, but I was so impressed with
[3406.58] Tony: the one I got that I ordered 10 of them.
[3412.38] Tony: Um, I'm going to be the same size of a 1300 milliamp hour.
[3418.54] Tony: They're much, they're much smaller than the, um, Graphene's or the, can I do that Graphene?
[3427.3] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[3427.94] Tony: Cause they're not really Graphene are they?
[3430.1] Jack: No, who knows what they are, but
[3432.86] Tony: if they're microscopic bits of Graphene that no one can see.
[3437.5] Jack: Pakenos, what's your view on Graphene?
[3439.34] Jack: Have you given them a go?
[3440.98] Lee: Yeah, we use quite a few of them here.
[3442.58] Lee: I like them as they work brilliantly as batteries.
[3445.9] Lee: They're batteries.
[3446.78] Lee: I mean, for me, I'm not like you and Tony in that, you know, it's not, uh, I'm not an out and out racer, so I'm probably not pushing them as hard as some other people are, but I find them yeah, really good, but then anything with a decently high C rating all kind of perform well, but I tend to be one of those really old school pilots where I'm really anal about making sure that I never take more than about 75% out of the battery and that I always try and size batteries appropriately and things like that.
[3475.3] Lee: So, so I'm probably not right at the raggedy edge where I'll see the real differences.
[3480.5] Jack: Um, uh, uh, B ox FPV asks, uh, what do you think about the infinity Graphene?
[3489.1] Jack: I've got no idea what you're on about, dude.
[3491.3] Jack: No idea.
[3493.5] Tony: There's Graphene in any of the Graphene's.
[3498.1] Tony: Yeah.
[3498.7] Jack: Switch to infinity Graphene, what, uh, 40 grams less white.
[3503.1] Jack: I did fly it for 55 minutes plus and I really sagged it apparently.
[3509.3] Jack: Hmm.
[3510.1] Jack: Okay.
[3510.3] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[3510.5] Lee: I'm just looking at it now.
[3511.7] Lee: Got people like Banggood are flagging him infinity for us Graphene packs.
[3518.7] Lee: Yeah.
[3519.7] Jack: Um, I don't know whether this is a thing because you would know more than me, but
[3524.1] Jack: I'm, I'm kind of slight.
[3525.7] Jack: Um, SPF for, you know, the, uh, uh, F4 board.
[3532.7] Jack: Yeah.
[3532.9] Jack: I'll send you the link to the series as it's coming along now.
[3535.3] Jack: Um, we, we, we've got one, we've got two more videos to shoot.
[3539.7] Lee: One of them is actually going through the on-screen display.
[3543.1] Lee: The last video we did that's up in the series that will be out in January, but
[3546.7] Lee: you can still find in the playlist actually shows that we're going through
[3550.3] Lee: the on-screen display.
[3551.5] Lee: And it just, I mean, I was talking to you before Jack about it.
[3554.1] Lee: And it just, when I first fired it up and saw the on-screen display, I
[3557.5] Lee: just started giggling because it just looked exactly like I wanted the
[3561.5] Lee: minimum OSD to look the very first time I fired one up, um, you know,
[3565.5] Lee: proper vector based graphics, so silky smooth looks awesome.
[3569.7] Lee: Um, so the next video is going to be looking at the on-screen display, uh,
[3573.5] Lee: cause it even that's, it's more the cool thing.
[3575.5] Lee: Yeah.
[3575.9] Lee: Yeah.
[3576.1] Lee: Yeah.
[3576.5] Lee: It's going to be looking at the on-screen display, uh, cause it even, uh,
[3580.3] Lee: that's, it's more the cool stuff here as well.
[3582.2] Lee: If you're like team black sheep have introduced this extra special way
[3584.9] Lee: that you can configure their, uh, video transmitters and you can set the
[3588.5] Lee: frequency to band and the power that they transmit on all through the, um,
[3592.8] Lee: the flight controller, they've actually implemented that in their version
[3597.9] Lee: of beta flight as well.
[3599.4] Lee: So there's some, some quite cool stuff coming on.
[3602.1] Lee: Um, and then the last one is they've also made it so, and this was interesting
[3606.3] Lee: for the INAV stuff, it's expandable.
[3609.1] Lee: So there's a little port on the top of this f four board that you can
[3612.4] Lee: snap daughter boards into and they've got one that's a parameter.
[3617.2] Lee: Um, and then, uh, they're not going to do a mag and atomic to one because
[3620.8] Lee: it's too close to all the electronics anyway.
[3623.0] Lee: But it means that if you just want to expand and add extra sensors in,
[3625.8] Lee: you just buy the little daughter board and snap it onto the top.
[3628.7] Lee: That's quite cool.
[3630.3] Lee: Yeah.
[3630.6] Lee: So really, really smart idea.
[3632.4] Lee: So you can start off with something basic.
[3633.8] Lee: And then if you want to go mad and I now, then, you know, you can start
[3637.1] Lee: snapping in all the, all the rest of the bobbins.
[3640.4] Jack: Well, we're good.
[3641.1] Jack: All right, guys, we're at time now.
[3643.2] Jack: So, um, yeah, I'd like to thank everyone for, uh, for attending.
[3649.9] Jack: Um, yeah, uh, painless.
[3651.9] Jack: Do you want to, do you want to just read us our little marriage thing?
[3656.0] Jack: And Tony's got to say, I do.
[3657.7] Tony: Yeah, you got to, or not ending the screen.
[3661.6] Jack: Yeah.
[3662.5] Lee: Well, do you, Tony, do you, Tony, will you love him on a, on a bay him?
[3672.9] Lee: All right.
[3673.9] UNKNOWN: Maybe we'll have to try again in the new year.
[3676.4] Lee: Happy Merry Christmas, guys.
[3678.9] Lee: Have a wonderful festive time and all the best for next year.
[3682.1] Lee: Merry Christmas.
[3683.0] Lee: Merry Christmas.
[3683.9] Lee: Merry Christmas.
[3684.9] Lee: Merry Christmas.
[3685.9] Lee: Merry Christmas.
[3686.9] Jack: Merry Christmas.
[3688.7] Jack: Right.
[3689.0] Jack: I'm going to poke some holes in that boiler of yours in the back of the
[3692.1] Jack: van now, last time I fixed anything for you, I'm grateful vegan.
[3698.4] Jack: Just, just a quick little story, but we were talking about animals at
[3701.8] Jack: the hospital and, um, I was trying to explain to everyone how like Tony's
[3705.8] Jack: like a friend of all the animals and, you know, he loves, he loves all
[3709.5] Jack: the animals and Tony's rescued this dog called Wally.
[3713.1] Jack: And the only reason this dog is alive is because no one else wanted
[3716.8] Jack: him, he attacked everyone.
[3718.4] Jack: Gobshite dog hates everyone.
[3720.5] Jack: The only reason this dog's alive is because of Tony and even that
[3723.9] Jack: dog hates Tony.
[3726.9] Tony: He actually does.
[3728.2] Tony: No, he doesn't.
[3729.4] Tony: I'm the only one who can pick him up.
[3732.2] Tony: But I have to do it like that.
[3736.7] Tony: He's lovely.
[3737.4] Tony: He's just been mistreated.
[3739.9] Tony: Tony, like me.
[3741.0] Tony: I can't help but mistreat you, Jack.
[3749.1] Jack: It's when you've got, when you've been nice to him, he worries.
[3751.6] Jack: Thanks guys.
[3753.0] Jack: Thanks for tuning in.
[3754.5] Jack: Thanks for coming on painless.
[3756.5] Jack: My pleasure, Jack.
[3757.3] Jack: Have a good one.
[3758.6] Jack: Au revoir.
[3759.6] Jack: Au revoir.
[3760.1] Jack: Happy, happy flying.
[3761.9] Jack: Happy flying.
