[131.8] Jack: been up to recently. You were in a meeting. Was the meeting good? What was the meeting
[137.2] Chad K: about? The meeting was with my lawyer just getting some of the business stuff taken care
[142.52] Chad K: of. So for those of you that don't know, I had purchased Rota Riot from the company that
[152.56] Chad K: I was, I had actually joined. If I back up to 2014, I sold flight tests to Lauren International.
[163.36] Chad K: And I also joined Lauren International. And during my time there, I created a movie called
[170.52] Chad K: Rota DR1 and then created a... Oh, this is one of the recreated props made by Michael
[180.2] Chad K: Anthony. It's not distressed or anything. Doesn't have any, you know, the final paint
[184.48] Jack: job, but yeah. With Trump in charge, it won't take long to get a post-apocalyptic kind of
[193.76] Jae: look to that item. At least you're manufacturing of being the same country. But this went political
[203.24] Jae: real fast. It's still a world discussion. So you bought back, you bought Rota Riot from the oil
[216.6] Chad K: tycoons. It's a rubber manufacturer, extruded rubber manufacturers, kind of their mainstay. But
[225.4] Chad K: it's a really great company. I mean, they have grown flight tests more and faster than I could
[232.4] Chad K: have. But with Rota Riot, it just, it was a little more, less conservative, I guess, is probably the
[246.44] Chad K: best way to say it. And it was just probably a better fit to be independent. So I had made the
[256.8] Chad K: purchase at the end of December and still getting some paperwork and that taken care of.

[372.03] Jack: Jay, I got you into the UK drone show. Adam, I bought you water in the UK drone show.
[377.39] Jack: And then Jay, I think I had a hug off you and I never saw you ever again.
[383.55] Jae: You went off and scurried into the hole somewhere.
[387.95] Jack: Yeah, I was just just like interviewing people. But when I went over to the don't quote me on this
[394.11] Jack: because they're probably going to really shout at me. But the who are those guys? The CIA. They're
[398.91] Jack: our they're your version. They're our version of your right. And I sat to a giant to him. I was
[407.39] Jack: like, Hey, man, how are you going? How are you finding this? You guys stressed out? And they were
[410.91] Jack: like, No, we've got rubber ducks. And they had like a big pond. They did kids pool. And it was
[417.55] Jack: full of rubber ducks with the little eyelet holes that you hang pictures with. And I was like,
[423.79] Jack: okay, and he handed me a stick. And he was like, all right, grab a duck, come and grab one. And it
[428.59] Jack: was a and I grabbed another one. And it was like 52. And I thought, Oh, well, I haven't won a prize.
[438.43] Jack: And I did. I won a stick of rock. There's a stick of rock around here somewhere less than 400 feet.
[447.55] Adam: Yeah, that was it was rubber ducks and safety meters or safety feet.
[457.07] Adam: That's what happens when you have a government sponsored pile of money in order to promote
[461.23] Adam: things. You don't have to worry too much about how much you're spending. Let's get some rubber ducks.

[518.29] Jack: else. Like, so they're like, yeah, you're doing a great job. You're policing each other, you're
[522.13] Jack: spreading the word, giving out information. And they thought the E.A. the E.S. A. A.
[531.41] Jack: Yeah, was gonna, you know, like clamp down and totally that was hashtag ruin the hobby. It was
[538.13] Adam: like what? Well, the other the other thing the CIA did was they were instrumental in getting the
[544.69] Adam: Nats app set up. So if you want to go droning, you just pop open an app, say I'm here,
[551.33] Adam: and local aviation will keep out of your way, which seems to be a very sensible way of doing
[557.81] Adam: things as long as you stick under 400 feet. Hmm. Is it kind of like pedestrians where they
[563.09] Adam: get the right away? It's sort of Yeah, you bet you bet you have an app and assuming it's not an area
[569.01] Adam: that's already marked as you know, not allowed, like nuclear installation, this, that and the other
[576.61] Adam: near an airport or anything like that, then you can just say I'm going to be here for a bit.
[581.33] NJ: And it sounds like Tinder for Quads or something.
[587.41] Adam: That is the other side of it, isn't it? Yeah, you can you can meet some other

[603.17] NJ: it's an interesting idea. It's good. People are thinking a little bit outside the box.
[608.75] Jack: I mean, I was going to say, like our Lord and Master, our sort of version of Chad Capper,
[615.55] Jack: is is Dom, Dom Robertson, and he's managed to get the the Hidden Valley Flying Park
[624.91] Jack: listed as a no, no flight. Is that right, Jay? You would know. You pay attention and like read stuff.

[644.11] Jae: to fly. And I think that's quite important. He's very instrumental in setting that up with the
[647.95] Jae: farmer down there. And it's a place full of love. And I can only think I'm going to start
[652.51] Jae: having to see more of these places as we get outlawed into the countryside.
[657.95] Jae: Yeah, I think what we need is really a model of how to make it work from a business point of view
[663.07] Jae: to open it up for more people to say, yeah, okay, I can do that. I know how to get the insurance
[668.03] Jae: and things like that, because often it's getting the insurance and how do you run it? Do you run
[671.55] Jae: it as a company who's liable? So I think it's good that it was the first sort of dedicated UK
[678.83] Jae: flying site, in that sense, that moves away from the club idea. But we just need more
[686.75] Jae: but we just need more of them now.

[701.12] Jae: Well, I mean, I know there's been a few other people trying to start up similar things,
[705.44] Jae: but there's all the legal sort of hurdles to jump over. Mainly around insurance,
[711.68] Jae: because that's the biggest one to just get around once you can ensure that then
[715.12] Jae: we'll have more of these flying sites. But I think a lot of the community dislike the whole
[719.68] Jae: idea of flying clubs, because they're usually run by a lot of older people, and they have
[724.16] Jae: their own set of rules, and they've looked down on these aircraft. I don't know why they do.
[728.8] Jae: And so I think it's good that aid is something else we can have, or maybe it's going to be a
[733.2] Jae: move towards more trends where people can start learning the right way, you know, because I think
[740.0] Jae: since we've had the multirotors, a lot of people bypass the safety aspect, because they just learn
[743.84] Jae: in the backyard, they can hover it in the backyard, they go down to the park, they fly it.
[747.68] Jae: And I think these sites can actually allow it to be a lot easier to implement into our space
[755.28] Jae: by having it where people can learn and actually helping out in the community sense.
[760.8] Jack: Jack, what are you saying, Chad, is if you want to ruin the hobby for England, try harder.
[773.84] Jack: I'd like to not eat my words. That was a joke. I think our audience have got our sets of people
[784.72] Chad K: by now, or left. Yeah, I think ruining the hobby has pretty much just become a term for having too
[791.2] Jack: much fun. Yeah. Does having too much fun mean vomiting up rainbows? Because like, you know,
[800.56] Chad K: what the hell are you all about? I still steal 100 bucks. I told them 100 bucks goes to the first
[810.32] Chad K: person that vomits on camera. No way, really. And he wasn't trying to vomit. He sincerely
[820.4] Jack: took in more than his body could handle. He doesn't drink at all, does he? I don't think.
[826.64] Jack: No, it is weird. How do you how do you have that conversation with someone who doesn't drink?
[832.56] Jack: How was like, I need you to do this for me? Well, how did you learn to get into drink?
[838.16] Chad K: Is that it? Is that all it took? No, they're a great group of guys that are usually I mean,
[846.18] Chad K: I took them to, you know, radioactive wasteland. We went, you know, that also the country actually
[854.58] Chad K: has some conflict with Russia. And more coming. We've we've we've gone all over and I don't know,
[866.1] Chad K: we've tried a lot of stuff went to a gun range, you know, where Carlos was quite nervous. But they
[876.74] Jae: I don't know. They have a lot of trust, I guess. I guess you'd like taking these people out of
[881.54] Adam: the comfort zone. Yeah, drink this drink this it's 3% less than a lethal dose.
[893.54] Jack: Well, I didn't drink any. Lucky. He doesn't smoke. I'm sure he's like flammable after that.
[900.58] Jack: So I mean, those guys are like, oh, my word. Yeah. So have you got any advice to anyone who
[908.02] Chad K: does want to start their own YouTube channel? Well, yeah, I get that question all the time.
[915.86] Chad K: Make content people want to watch. And it sounds like a really, really basic step. But
[922.34] Chad K: you know, the problem is people just make something they're excited about. Well,
[927.06] Chad K: sometimes other people are excited about that. But most of the time, they're not.
[932.64] Chad K: So with with flight tests, I just made the show that I wanted to watch.
[938.24] Chad K: And it just so happened, there was a bunch of people like me. So it worked. Road to Riot,
[945.6] Chad K: you know, again, was I think a further refinement of what I kind of what got me excited about the
[953.92] Chad K: hobby. You know, I, one of my first aircraft was a it was a 12 inch propellers and it was an
[963.92] Chad K: arducopter built from scratch. And it was a beast. And I was trying to hover it in my basement whilst
[972.48] Chad K: it was chained to the floor. That was in 2010. So as multi radar technology increased, you know,
[985.46] Chad K: we moved up to wood booms and, you know, stuff like that. And it just keeps going and getting
[994.98] Chad K: better. But the problem is, I can't fly anything like these guys. So while I can appreciate the
[1002.5] Chad K: technology and the abilities, I can't fly like that. As in you don't want to fly like that,
[1010.26] Chad K: surely. Well, I would love to be able to fly like they do. I just can't. I don't have the
[1016.18] Chad K: reaction time. Hand eye coordination. I fly my video games like the rest of us surely. Oh, yeah.
[1026.38] Chad K: Well, I mean, I can get through the level. I can't be the rock star, you know. So I fly my
[1034.22] Chad K: five inch alien like a wing. I love, you know, proximity, long, long flights, scenery. You know,
[1044.78] Chad K: I like that's what I like. Have you guys seen Gabe 707? Yeah, stabilize flights that he's doing.
[1054.78] Jae: Did he do the one in Hollywood, down the boulevard or something?
[1060.22] Chad K: Well, I haven't seen that one now here.
[1061.98] Jae: I think maybe I'm talking about something else. Okay, and then he stabilizes it post.
[1068.54] Chad K: Yes. Yes. I mean, that's the stuff that Oh, sorry.

[1075.18] Chad K: Yeah, there's the link. That's the stuff that you jazzed about. I think that's so fun. The reason
[1081.02] Chad K: I like it is it's capitalizing on somebody's skill, the technology, hardware, software,
[1089.9] Chad K: art, like it just has it all combined. And, you know, not not, you know, some of the other stuff
[1096.46] Chad K: and the freestyle stuff isn't like that. But but when I saw that video, it just it popped,
[1102.94] Adam: you know, and I love that. It looks like that bit in Lord of the Rings.
[1107.5] Jae: Oh, yeah, this is quite a good, you can get quite good cinematic shots from that style of flying,
[1112.62] Jae: which you can't often achieve, which is just moving a tripod around the sky, like a lot of
[1116.86] Jae: the other aerial platforms. And I mean, I'm lucky enough to have my commercial license. And I was
[1120.46] Jae: just thinking the other day thinking about his videos, and it was particularly that Hollywood
[1123.82] Jae: Boulevard one, and just thinking, actually, some of your shots, you wouldn't want to fly a larger
[1128.3] Jae: rig through, you know, through a small gap or anything. But it can create such a more
[1132.54] Jae: such a better cinematic shot flying like you'd fly FPV, I think the software that backed it up
[1139.26] Chad K: that makes it all possible. Hey, how are there only 37 listeners and a thumbs down? Who is that?

[1395.22] Jack: like 10 o'clock for him. No, he's what he's only an hour ahead of me. Yeah, yeah. 10 o'clock. Yeah,

[1436.74] Jack: It's so I've got a question for Chad, actually.
[1438.82] NJ: Okay. Yes. So you strike me as someone who's enjoyed kind of putting all the components
[1448.5] NJ: together and amalgamating these projects like flight tests and sort of bringing them to
[1452.66] NJ: fruition. And obviously, you've done that with Road to Riot as well as flight tests.
[1457.62] NJ: It's a new year, 2017. What's your plan? Have you got something in the pipeline that you want
[1462.82] Chad K: to give us a little pointer towards? Well, I mean, Road to Riot, the plan next is to give
[1472.9] Chad K: the guys a lot more control. So right now, Tommy is head of operations. So he's calling the shots
[1480.02] Chad K: and I'm supporting him. And so that might not sound like a lot publicly, but internally,
[1488.82] Chad K: that's a really cool thing to be able to start transitioning control over to the guys. We did
[1496.66] Chad K: that at flight tests with Josh, but it took two and a half years before we got to that point where
[1502.66] Chad K: now we're a year in and we're starting that transition. One thing I would really like to
[1509.86] Chad K: do is start involving more of the community, getting more community collaboration within
[1518.9] Chad K: Road to Riot and featuring more pilots. Actually, I'll let the cat out of the bag. It's been a week
[1526.9] Chad K: or two now, but like Luke Bannister, he's been a moderator in our Facebook group and people don't
[1534.34] Chad K: even know. But I love that collaboration. I love that we're such a global, completely spread out
[1550.1] Chad K: around the globe, but we're such a tight knit community. And I want to do more things that
[1556.02] Chad K: incorporate that. I want to continue to grow that bond. My mission from day one, I actually
[1562.9] Chad K: registered the name Road to Riot and had this mission in place before even meeting the guys
[1567.7] Chad K: that were on the show. And this was back in like April of 2015. I knew that this space was going
[1575.54] Chad K: to be something, but I didn't know what there's no way to really predict what it was going to be.
[1579.62] Chad K: But I knew that eventually money was going to find its way here and sponsors and everybody. And I
[1585.22] Chad K: was afraid it would start to change the culture. And if the culture isn't gelled and doesn't have
[1592.26] Chad K: like a rally point, it can very easily get dispersed or disbanded. Because quite frankly,
[1601.62] Chad K: we as people and social groups, there's no real structure to a social group. So we just fall victim
[1608.42] Chad K: to whatever structure is introduced. So what I wanted to do was create that rally point and say,
[1615.94] Chad K: hey, this is, you know, if you see, I don't have the logo, but it's on my phone, I guess, you know,
[1622.98] Chad K: if you see that logo, it means something and it means our culture. It doesn't have a specific
[1633.3] Chad K: name. Well, you know, Road to Riot is what we go by, but I want it to represent the pilots and the
[1641.06] Chad K: people that have created this culture and come from RC. And there's just a uniqueness about it
[1646.98] Chad K: that, you know, it's hard to describe, but I wanted to help and apply any marketing abilities that I
[1654.02] Chad K: had to the culture rather than a just a corporate entity that, you know, enters the space.
[1663.38] Chad K: So I probably rabbit trailed a little bit. But, you know, I want to keep on that mission. I'd love
[1668.58] Chad K: to build out like a training center where pilots can come and train other pilots. It'll be kind of
[1676.82] Chad K: the the road to riot headquarters. You know, we want to do some things like build the fastest
[1683.94] Chad K: drone in the world. That's Tommy's project that he's working on. I've got a little project of my

[1764.18] Jae: there's so many experts in the various fields in the community that it's always good when
[1769.06] Jae: you can achieve so much more from having the community than what you would have

[1900.67] Chad K: you know, I tried to incorporate in everything. And the way I've always described it is entertainment

[1912.27] Chad K: with and the inspiration gets them off the couch. And, you know, if you have that formula,

[2038.19] Chad K: being inspired. And then at that point, you're like, oh, wow, this is a little more serious
[2043.07] Chad K: than I originally intended. So road or riot was started with that vision in place. So we knew that
[2050.35] Chad K: if we're doing what we're doing properly, we were going to be inspiring people. So they started with
[2056.91] Chad K: a little bit different mindsets, even though they're very similar models, but they're also
[2061.07] Chad K: different crowds, there's about a 50% overlap. But there's also 50% of road arrive that would
[2066.99] Chad K: never watch flight tests and 50% of flight tests that would never watch road or riot. So

[2183.76] Chad K: hooked. I'm like, Okay, so I every morning I would get up and I would look outside. And if the
[2188.56] Chad K: weather was great, I go fly, I would rush home from work to go fly. And then as soon as it got
[2193.76] Chad K: dark, I go in the basement till 2am building. I mean, yeah, so it's definitely an addictive hobby.

[2341.12] Chad K: Ariel GP way back in the summer of 2015. And they, they had DJI there and they were doing their DJI
[2352.96] Chad K: or DJI, um, show that they do. And they had guy the, the drone.
[2359.44] Chad K: Yeah. Where you, you like do all these little tests than that. And I thought,
[2363.68] Chad K: Oh, that looked fun. So I wanted to go over and do it. And they bring cameras over and
[2367.6] Chad K: the host comes over and he's like, Chad capper from flight test is going to, I'm like,
[2371.76] Chad K: no, I don't want to know. So of course I, you know, I do my little thing and eventually wreck it.
[2380.0] Chad K: Like, I don't, I like to build, I like to repair, you know, I like to fly things that are easy to
[2386.72] Chad K: fly, um, in front of people. Um, but for the most part, I'm not that great of a pilot.
[2394.4] Jack: Yeah. Well, you did hit yourself in the head that one time.
[2401.76] Chad K: Yes. In a museum in Ukraine. Oh, man. I remember that. Oh, I remember that. I did,

[2429.76] NJ: Well, what did it hit one of the wires, right? But then did it fall and hit part of the actual
[2434.48] NJ: aircraft or cause it was a pretty, obviously it was a big bang. We, we heard, but, um,
[2439.6] Chad K: and I'm hitting the concrete, but the in the, in the wing. So what it was, was I was getting a
[2446.72] Chad K: straight down shot and obviously I couldn't watch through the camera because of the shot I was
[2451.68] Chad K: getting. So I was watching it line of sight. The problem was, was there was a big 747. No,
[2458.24] Chad K: it wasn't 747. It was a big airliner. And then on the other side of that was a glider, which I knew
[2465.04] Chad K: it was there. And I knew I was, I was safe with the glider, but what I did not and could not see
[2469.92] Chad K: was there was a very thin cable going down from the ceiling to the glider. So from my vision,
[2476.96] Chad K: it just looked like a clear path. So I was doing my little strafe shot with the camera face down,
[2482.32] Chad K: watching line of sight. And I went straight into the wire and when it hit the wire, it fell down,
[2488.72] Chad K: hit the wing of the glider, went off of that, hit the propeller blade of a helicopter,
[2495.12] Chad K: and then hit the concrete. Right. Did your thumbs start twitching even more then? I think it did.
[2509.68] Chad K: And of course the video footage stops like as soon as it hits the wire because it, it records
[2515.76] Chad K: in packets and it always loses that last packet. So you don't get to actually see the fall from
[2520.56] Chad K: the camera. Things we do for the footage, eh? Oh yeah. But as long as you get the footage,
[2526.0] Chad K: it's like, honestly, the moment's priceless. Oh yeah. A hugely entertaining episode and some
[2532.88] NJ: truly epic footage all around, I think, especially some of those enormous aircraft.
