====================================

Tony it's scheduled early.

[0.0] Jae: And welcome to yet another episode of Let's Drone Out.
[4.08] Jae: As usual, we're joined by some of our Motley Crews,
[6.88] Jae: such as Tony.
[8.24] Jae: What's up?
[9.64] Jae: Hello, Tony.
[10.84] Jae: We've also got Adam lurking somewhere.
[12.76] Jae: Hi.
[14.12] Jae: Good day, Adam.
[15.52] Jae: This week, we've also got MJ Tech.
[18.12] Jae: Hello.
[18.92] Jae: Hello.
[19.8] Jae: Yeah, welcome back, because you're on last week.
[21.84] Jae: And Jack's taken some time out to, I think,
[24.76] Jae: make his hair into antennas or something, I heard.
[27.12] Jae: Get a haircut or something, but who knows?
[29.28] Jae: But I'm sure he might be in the chat, actually.
[31.4] Jae: So if you head on over to the right-hand side of your window,
[34.68] Jae: you should be able to see a live chat.
[36.48] Jae: Post some questions in.
[37.84] Jae: And hello to all.
[38.92] Jae: So welcome, crew.
[41.12] Jae: How are you all doing?
[42.16] Jae: What are you all doing?
[42.96] Adam: Right now, I'm really liking the idea
[44.56] Adam: that Jack's turning his hair into antennas.
[46.6] Adam: So if you're near an antenna, you
[48.32] Adam: can tune into his thought wavelength.
[50.88] Jae: I think he's trying to replace some of that FPV stuff.
[53.2] Jae: The less I like that idea.
[55.0] Jae: No, he's replacing some FPV antennas, I think, with just hair.
[59.52] Jae: Brain implants.
[60.2] Jae: I think that comes next, but who knows?
[62.76] Jae: You can ask him if he's in the chat room.
[65.12] Adam: Yeah, weirdly, he is in the chat,
[66.68] Adam: but he's not yet on the podcast.
[69.2] Jae: I haven't actually gone into the chat room yet,
[71.08] Jae: but I will in very shortly.
[72.8] Jae: So yeah, so lots of exciting things
[75.84] Jae: have been popping up on different YouTube feeds and things
[78.2] Jae: this week, everything from Taranis stuff
[80.24] Jae: to flying over in some weirs and things like that.
[84.88] Jae: Angel, I believe you've got your hot little hands
[87.2] Jae: on some items.
[89.24] NJ: Yeah, I did.
[90.16] NJ: I got my hands on this little guy here,
[94.48] NJ: which is a kind of micro brushless called the Jumper
[100.28] NJ: X76S.
[102.16] NJ: So I did a little review on that.
[103.48] NJ: And yeah, I've been quite interested to see
[106.48] NJ: how the micro brushless stuff is going to work out.
[110.2] NJ: And yeah, as a 1S, it's not filling me with excitement,
[114.88] NJ: but it's been good fun.
[116.2] NJ: And I can see this is now going to be,
[118.84] NJ: I think this is really going to start to take off.
[121.4] NJ: I think 2S is probably the sweet spot.
[123.64] NJ: But yeah, I'm actually doing a custom build on a 2S
[127.36] NJ: at the minute.
[127.84] NJ: So yeah, it's something to do while the weather's
[130.24] NJ: terrible here in the UK with whatever it is,
[133.8] NJ: Storm Doris knocking on our southwest
[136.56] NJ: corner of the country at the minute.
[139.24] NJ: So there's not much outdoor flying going on for any of us
[141.6] NJ: right now.
[142.84] Jae: But even at night, these things, all these small cameras,
[145.44] Jae: I've just been amazed.
[146.52] Jae: I mean, some are better than others,
[147.76] Jae: but some of these are really good for flying in car parks
[150.04] Jae: with very little light or streets and stuff.
[152.24] Jae: So that's where I think it extends the flying
[154.72] Jae: opportunities by the day.
[156.4] NJ: Yeah, I think in many ways, and this
[158.72] NJ: is true of all these little micros that I've reviewed,
[161.2] NJ: I've probably got more night flight footage
[163.64] NJ: than I have daytime footage, because they just
[165.88] NJ: tend to do better under that iridescent light indoors
[170.32] NJ: and floodlit outdoors than they do in the daytime,
[172.8] NJ: where you've got big dynamic light changing.
[176.0] NJ: And it's an interesting thing, actually.
[178.4] NJ: I was kind of wondering if we're always trying to second guess
[182.04] NJ: what's going to get the big push in development next.
[185.08] NJ: It's flight controllers, motors, although it's
[187.8] NJ: more incremental with motors, those little 5%, 10%
[190.92] NJ: changes in each revision.
[193.08] NJ: But what one thing really needs to push, perhaps,
[197.46] NJ: and I certainly think it's usually
[200.38] NJ: the weak spot in a lot of these little quad copters
[203.46] NJ: is that little CMOS camera.
[205.38] NJ: And the only company for me, at the minute that I'm really
[209.06] NJ: pushing stuff with cameras, is Runkam.
[213.1] NJ: They're actually taking things like the 1177
[217.38] NJ: and doing great things with it.
[219.66] NJ: And Runkam makes some of the best cameras out there now
[225.74] NJ: in terms of the FPV feed.
[228.34] NJ: So I would love to see them, if anyone at Runkam
[232.06] NJ: was ever listening to us, I'd love
[233.5] NJ: to see them start developing some of these micro cameras.
[236.92] NJ: Because certainly for us here in the UK,
[239.54] NJ: we're desperate for some good micro cameras
[243.14] NJ: with these low light nights.
[244.3] Adam: The depressing thing is that they don't even
[246.3] Adam: need to do any work.
[249.1] Adam: The huge number of cameras in mobile phones over the years
[251.7] Adam: means that there's been a massive amount of research
[253.9] Adam: and development into those sorts of cameras.
[255.9] Adam: People just need to spend a couple more quid
[257.9] Adam: when they're specifying their parts.
[260.98] Jae: Well, when I first started flying FPV,
[263.94] Jae: the cameras themselves are much larger
[265.78] Jae: than what they are of the 1177s.
[268.02] Jae: So they are shrinking down anyway with the technology.
[271.7] Adam: No, we just need the product managers to look a little further.
[276.38] NJ: Well, that's it.
[277.02] NJ: And that's the difference, isn't it?
[278.74] NJ: We just need someone to put it into the right form factor
[281.58] NJ: and actually get it to be a nice small product that will
[288.46] NJ: fit into the budget that works around the budgets
[291.86] NJ: that you're working towards with these tiny drones.
[294.54] NJ: So I think that has to happen.
[295.66] NJ: But I've definitely seen them often.
[297.14] NJ: You work on a budget?
[299.22] NJ: Oh, I'm sure they do.
[302.34] NJ: Certainly in terms of just getting everything
[305.58] NJ: to the point where it's very accessible for that higher
[309.5] NJ: quality stuff.
[310.34] NJ: But the CMOS cameras are getting better.
[313.3] NJ: I've seen some truly terrible small CMOS cameras.
[316.86] NJ: And more recently, I've seen the light handling
[319.98] NJ: improved on those little cameras.
[322.66] NJ: So it's slower, but I'd like to see that area develop quicker.
[328.46] NJ: That would be good.
[331.1] Jae: Well, even to the actual transmitters now,
[333.06] Jae: they're coming as switchable between different output
[336.14] Jae: power ranges.
[337.46] Jae: So I suppose it's just interesting that everything
[340.18] Jae: is still shrinking down.
[341.66] NJ: Yeah, I mean, I've got one coming, which is exactly that.
[345.02] NJ: And it's the same form factor as those tiny little cameras
[347.86] NJ: that we're used to seeing.
[349.18] NJ: But it's got a much better sensor on it.
[351.66] NJ: It's got the clover leaf antenna.
[354.58] NJ: And it's got a DVR built into it as well.
[357.9] NJ: And it's 6.8 grams, which is just mad.
[363.42] Jae: You can now make a paper plane RC.
[365.98] Jae: I wonder how long it'll be before we can actually
[367.98] Jae: FPV transmit it small enough on a paper plane as well.
[373.78] Jae: Yeah, it is.
[376.14] Jae: It is.
[376.66] Jae: It is.
[377.66] Jae: But I think seeing the brushless, I mean,
[380.7] Jae: I've had quite a few of these brushed microcods.
[382.9] Jae: But seeing that brushless in action, yep, I don't know.
[385.38] Jae: And just seeing how the response would stay the same when
[387.66] Jae: you zip the throttle up, it does actually
[390.46] Jae: bounce up and down much more than what the brushed ones
[393.5] Jae: were doing.
[393.98] Jae: So it's a great little flyer you got.
[398.3] Tony: Is it too fast, though?
[399.9] Tony: Is it too fast for the house?
[401.3] Tony: Or is it still?
[402.74] NJ: No, do you know what?
[404.46] NJ: On 1S, and these are 10,000 kV motors, 1103, 10,000 kV,
[410.14] NJ: I didn't really notice that there was a massive power
[413.58] NJ: improvement in terms of top throttle on 1S.
[417.66] NJ: I think on 2S, this thing will really come to light.
[420.3] NJ: On 1S, there wasn't a huge difference between, say,
[422.42] NJ: that and something like the QX95, which
[424.54] NJ: has the tiny brushed motors.
[427.14] NJ: But what you do notice is that its ability to change RPM
[431.54] NJ: is instant, as you get with brushless motors.
[434.42] NJ: So it's really the RPM handling, the RPM change.
[439.82] NJ: It can just do it so fast that that in itself
[442.26] NJ: makes it a much more locked quadcopter
[444.1] NJ: and start to feel like it's bigger brothers.
[446.54] NJ: So I think on 2S, you'll end up with something
[449.62] NJ: that will handle really, really well.
[454.22] NJ: Yeah, you totally could fly around your house.
[456.94] NJ: Absolutely.
[457.5] NJ: I mean, this one's got prop guards.
[458.7] NJ: As long as they've got prop guards, then you can fly around.
[461.82] NJ: Stand a better chance, Jamie.
[463.34] NJ: Yeah, otherwise you'd be bumping into stuff a lot.
[467.58] NJ: But yeah, Jay, so what was in the news recently?
[471.66] NJ: I think you mentioned something to me earlier
[473.98] NJ: that sounded quite interesting.
[476.34] Jae: There's a couple of things, but just before I move on,
[478.78] Jae: how much are those going for at the moment,
[480.54] Jae: those small brushless ones?
[482.34] NJ: I think when I checked, that one was around 60 pounds.
[487.1] NJ: But that doesn't, that one, yeah, 60 pounds,
[490.18] NJ: but it doesn't come with a battery.
[492.34] NJ: It doesn't come with anything, actually.
[493.78] NJ: It's just literally the quadrots on a prop guard.
[497.74] NJ: No manual, yeah.
[500.94] NJ: That wasn't the best one that I've tried yet.
[503.78] NJ: But yeah, I mean, that's roughly where the price point
[507.74] NJ: seems to be on those little RTFs.
[511.88] Jae: Yeah, well, it's such a crime that they're
[513.36] Jae: doing those things, really, I think,
[514.72] Jae: with that manual.
[515.68] Jae: I love to make, speaking of crime.
[517.84] Jae: I had to try and get in.
[519.24] Jae: Well, it was a crime, because flying these technically,
[523.56] Jae: you might actually suffer the same consequences
[525.64] Jae: that someone did a 37-year-old in the Staffordshire who has,
[529.6] Jae: as far as I know, been arrested.
[530.92] Jae: But it's more what they did with the arrest
[533.16] Jae: that I think is quite alarming.
[534.84] Jae: They took all of his flying aircraft.
[538.08] Jae: They took his computers and mobile phones and also
[541.68] Jae: any recording equipment and basically told him
[544.52] Jae: he's not allowed to fly a drone, until I suppose he's
[547.72] Jae: been released on bail.
[548.8] Jae: And they haven't actually released a name or anything,
[550.76] Jae: because they are actually going through a few things.
[553.4] Jae: Well, I mean, that's quite heavy-handed, really,
[556.12] Jae: for someone doing a drone flight.
[558.36] Jae: And I believe they found it not necessarily
[561.04] Jae: from witnessing the action taking place,
[563.32] Jae: but convicted based on what they uploaded.
[565.32] Jae: And that's probably why they got all the recording equipment.
[568.0] Tony: So be careful, guys.
[570.2] Tony: Well, take note.
[571.48] Jae: Yeah, the irony of that is, well,
[575.92] Jae: when I first heard the story, because it's about a week old,
[578.92] Jae: when I first heard it, I started searching YouTube,
[581.2] Jae: as one does.
[582.32] Jae: But with the birthplace of William Shakespeare,
[585.72] Jae: I think quite a few people have flown over the city,
[588.64] Jae: tried to find his house in all sorts.
[590.36] Jae: So there's one that looks like an American tourist.
[592.48] Jae: I think somebody else apparently was also
[596.12] Jae: caught in the act, a Japanese tourist,
[598.8] Jae: but they didn't actually find him.
[600.68] Jae: What I heard on that one is they were following him
[602.68] Jae: on CCTV camera as well.
[604.32] Jae: So as a city, they're thinking it's probably not so congested,
[608.72] Jae: but it's still a city, and the rules still apply.
[611.04] Jae: So be careful where you upload if you're on the web, really.
[614.44] NJ: Right, and this is a police force local to that area
[617.48] NJ: that also operate drones themselves, right?
[619.6] Jae: Yeah, it's work, sure.
[620.84] Jae: Police actually have drones at these.
[622.8] Jae: They're looking to inflate even more.
[624.24] Jae: So I mean, there are quite a few across the Midland region
[628.32] Jae: starting to employ drones in their police forces.
[631.32] Jae: Do we know what their drones are out of interest?
[634.52] Jae: Well, what they're flying?
[635.76] Tony: Inspires.
[636.48] Jae: I believe they used to be inspires, yeah.
[638.44] Jae: Most of them are just inspire-based.
[640.56] NJ: They look the most terminator,
[641.92] NJ: so they do look quite threatening, don't they?
[643.92] Tony: Well, they're white.
[645.28] Tony: They all can just put a blue light on top,
[647.56] Tony: and then it's done.
[649.16] Jae: Out of the box, let's face it,
[652.28] Jae: it's got a 360-degree camera,
[655.68] Jae: and it's probably the most useful.
[657.28] Jae: And yeah, it looks the most threatening, but...
[659.6] Jae: If you were going to help them,
[661.72] Adam: you wouldn't feel like it was a difficult thing to explain either.
[665.4] Adam: Like, you know how you're going to have to explain
[667.04] Adam: any sort of corporate spending you've made or stuff.
[670.56] Adam: You say, oh, yeah, for a couple of thousand pounds,
[673.44] Adam: we got ourselves a view that we used to get
[675.88] Adam: for 100,000 pounds an hour on the helicopter
[678.16] Adam: or whatever it is.
[679.24] Adam: Yeah, absolutely.
[681.64] Tony: I mean, it looks possible.
[684.4] Jae: They had some police force giving, basically,
[687.32] Jae: how they used them at the commercial UAV show last year,
[690.4] Jae: and there's quite a broad range that they use it for.
[692.84] Jae: Not necessarily surveillance, but that's number one,
[694.48] Jae: but when people have committed suicide in the car,
[697.32] Jae: like as chemical suicide,
[698.52] Jae: they won't approach the car in person,
[700.4] Jae: so they can at least fly over and assess the area,
[703.16] Jae: see if it's them inside.
[704.44] Jae: You know, there's loads of uses for these things now that...
[707.24] NJ: I think the call is one of the sort of...
[708.36] Jae: It's a shame that they're telling everyone else.
[709.88] NJ: Sorry?
[711.72] NJ: ...being used by the fire service,
[713.92] NJ: and they had thermal sensors on board, thermal camera,
[716.96] NJ: so they could actually look at the hot spots of the house
[719.12] NJ: before sending the crew in.
[720.48] NJ: I thought that was pretty cool.
[723.08] Jae: Yeah, see, you know, safety first, really,
[725.84] Jae: but this is why regulation just catches up.
[729.2] Jae: This is why they won't be banned, per se,
[730.68] Jae: but I guess it's going to bring it home
[733.28] Jae: that you can't be flying over their area,
[735.36] Jae: which is congested areas, I suppose,
[737.84] Jae: which is the law anyway, so...
[740.4] Adam: If you search for drones arrests in 2017,
[745.92] Adam: you also get a man in San Francisco
[748.0] Adam: flying it to know a police helicopter.
[751.32] Adam: That seems to be inviting trouble.
[754.16] Adam: And a man arrested in China for flying it too close.
[758.2] Adam: They don't say exactly what too close is,
[760.96] Adam: to a passenger jet.
[763.4] Tony: Yes, I think I saw that one.
[766.36] Tony: Is that the one at the airport
[768.32] Tony: when the plane's coming in?
[771.52] Adam: I would say it has an airport, it's definitely too close.
[774.12] Tony: It doesn't even look real, does it?
[776.08] Tony: It's like, oh, my God, is that real?
[777.96] Tony: What an idiot. Why did he do that?
[781.2] Adam: Yeah. Because he's an idiot.
[784.72] Adam: He got a great shot, though.
[788.88] Adam: It looks like an airline ad.
[791.44] NJ: So, on the subject of the Inspire,
[795.28] NJ: you've got your hands on the Inspire 2, haven't you, Adam?
[797.64] NJ: Is that right?
[798.96] Adam: Yeah, yeah, I did.
[800.2] Adam: Thanks to the gang at First Person View.
[804.12] Adam: And some money, in fairness.
[805.72] Adam: That's pretty good.
[807.92] NJ: A bunch of money, yeah.
[809.76] NJ: And how's your experience been with that?
[812.24] Adam: What's changed?
[814.8] Adam: I would say that it just feels better.
[819.2] Adam: It's difficult to define straight away,
[821.4] Adam: but the first and most important thing
[823.44] Adam: is just how much more responsive it is
[825.84] Adam: to the joysticks.
[828.08] Adam: And that's a great thing,
[829.24] Adam: because I hadn't really realised,
[832.36] Adam: but the Inspire is big and it does move around,
[836.32] Adam: but it's not immediate.
[842.07] Jae: Oh, we lost Adam a bit.
[843.83] Adam: Things have lost a couple of minutes.
[845.55] Jae: I think China just stepped in.
[847.63] Jae: China stepped into silent Adam.
[848.95] Jae: We missed some of that, Adam.
[850.47] Adam: Oh, sorry.
[852.91] Adam: The downside of it is it's slightly bigger.
[857.55] Adam: Just a couple of centimetres all the way around,
[859.99] Adam: which means it doesn't fit into my beautiful backpack.
[864.23] Tony: I'd like to see the difference in a couple of centimetres.
[867.75] Tony: The £250 that bag.
[870.15] Tony: Sorry, oh, there I go.
[871.55] Tony: Oh, very, very, this is a future editor.
[876.19] Tony: Sweary, sweary time.
[877.47] NJ: What did I say?
[878.15] NJ: Keep it clean.
[879.75] Tony: Did you say that?
[880.99] Tony: I didn't even swear.
[882.87] Jae: It's an unwritten rule.
[887.79] Adam: The other thing I would say is the video.
[890.35] Adam: I don't yet have one of DJI's £250 as a minimum.
[898.03] Adam: What's the word for it?
[899.75] Adam: The high speed memory cards.
[902.67] Adam: Yeah, so everything I've shot so far
[904.63] Adam: has gone on a standard microSD, and it still looks stunning.
[908.39] Adam: The 5.2K, which is widescreen variant,
[914.07] Adam: still at the same number of pixels.
[916.59] Adam: Yeah, it is spectacular.
[920.95] Adam: Cinematic.
[922.03] Adam: What are you watching it on?
[924.47] Adam: On a Retina MacBook.
[927.03] Jae: But even if you down sample it, it'll look sharper again.
[930.03] Jae: Yeah, exactly.
[930.95] Jae: It doesn't matter if you're not looking at 5.2K.
[933.35] Tony: Basically, you can zoom in what, five times
[936.23] Tony: and it'll still get the 1080p?
[938.95] Adam: Yeah.
[940.47] Adam: Well, yeah.
[941.55] Jae: But you see, when you're at the one-to-one ratio
[943.99] Jae: of the actual sensor, the sensor's
[945.27] Jae: not a massive sensor, so you would start to see some.
[948.63] Jae: Probably not much.
[949.95] Jae: I mean, this is some of the flight stuff, isn't it?
[952.23] Jae: Crops.
[952.83] Adam: If you take both and you look at it at 4K,
[956.67] Adam: or you crop it to 1080, you do see
[961.23] Adam: that it's clearly a better sensor.
[963.79] Adam: It copes better in dark areas and light areas.
[967.95] Adam: For much more money.
[970.07] Adam: For much more money, yeah.
[971.99] Adam: I should point out I'm flying the expensive one.
[977.75] Adam: But as an upgrade from the expensive, from the Pro
[982.23] Adam: as well.
[982.75] Adam: So I'm testing for light.
[985.39] Tony: Every time you take off, do you think
[987.51] Tony: that is like six grand in the air now?
[991.19] Tony: I'm scared.
[991.87] Adam: It sort of spoils it.
[993.87] Adam: Yeah, I'd be like, oh my god.
[995.75] Adam: I'm much less inclined to use it, which is sort of.
[1000.07] Adam: The way I've always thought about these things
[1002.79] Adam: is, for the sake of argument, your drone costs 1,000 pounds.
[1007.51] Adam: Second time you fly it, both flights cost 500 pounds.
[1010.27] Adam: Keep going, and you'll eventually
[1011.75] Adam: get that down to an amount that's not too depressing.
[1014.35] Tony: Yes.
[1016.27] Adam: With the Inspire, you start with a bigger number,
[1020.39] Adam: and you're less likely to use it.
[1022.67] Adam: So each flight stays terrifying.
[1025.11] Adam: The same time, it makes me really, really, really
[1028.87] Adam: clumsy with the old one.
[1031.31] Adam: And as my new friends from the London gang will know,
[1036.07] Adam: that means that I might, for example,
[1038.07] Adam: get distracted by a dog running out onto the field
[1040.43] Adam: and then knock the camera off the bottom of the Inspire.
[1045.63] Adam: Which is not manufactured as well as you'd think.
[1049.07] Adam: Once you've snapped the camera support gimbal,
[1056.87] Adam: you think that's some pretty cheap metal.
[1060.11] Adam: They could do better than that.
[1061.55] NJ: So just while we're in this area, what I was going to say
[1069.11] NJ: was, Jay, you've mentioned something about GoPro.
[1073.87] NJ: So they have recalled the karma, correct?
[1078.75] Jae: Yeah, yeah.
[1079.83] Jae: I suppose it's so interesting, yeah.
[1084.39] Jae: Well, the recall actually, it's now actually
[1087.11] Jae: was recalled about three months ago.
[1090.71] Jae: Sorry, so the news is the relaunch.
[1093.79] Jae: This is the relaunch now.
[1094.79] Jae: They've only just relaunched it, but I mean,
[1096.87] Jae: aren't they already doomed with it?
[1099.47] Jae: The problem they had a long time ago was the battery latch
[1101.99] Jae: wouldn't make a good connection.
[1104.47] Jae: So sometimes mid-flight, the battery would disconnect
[1107.11] Jae: and it would fall from the sky.
[1108.95] Jae: So they record all of them to try and fix that.
[1113.79] Adam: And what you're saying is that's bad, right,
[1115.47] Adam: if it falls from the sky?
[1117.67] Jae: Well, it doesn't have a big bouncy cushion underneath it,
[1120.03] Jae: that's for sure.
[1121.83] Jae: I mean, it was breaking them, but it was obviously not user
[1124.43] Jae: fault, it was actual product fault.
[1125.87] Jae: So they recalled them all and now we released it.
[1130.59] Jae: But quite quietly, I think, I don't
[1132.43] Jae: think they made a mess of fanfare.
[1133.83] Adam: No, I think it took the world, people like us,
[1137.99] Adam: to point out that you can get them again.
[1140.15] Adam: I think that their strategy appears
[1141.83] Adam: to be just pretend it never happened last time.
[1143.99] Jae: Yeah.
[1144.95] Jae: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
[1146.75] Adam: And in fact, this would be exactly my approach to it.
[1150.23] Jae: I didn't find out how many units they sold originally
[1154.87] Jae: because they didn't actually say,
[1156.67] Jae: oh, I couldn't find it at least, how many units
[1158.47] Jae: they had to recall.
[1159.99] Jae: But that could have been quite embarrassing anyway.
[1161.71] Jae: Because let's look at it.
[1162.79] Jae: I mean, if you look at the competitors,
[1164.67] Jae: they kind of were a bit too late.
[1166.15] Jae: Yes, they have the GoPro camera.
[1167.91] Jae: And yes, you can fit it on the stabilization
[1169.95] Jae: and there's uses for their system.
[1172.59] Jae: But DJI, as we were speaking just a moment ago,
[1176.47] Jae: are just constantly improving their sensors
[1177.99] Jae: in their camera units.
[1179.23] Jae: And they've put them into mobile handheld stabilization,
[1182.23] Jae: onto Inspires, onto Phantoms.
[1184.19] Tony: So they win, they rock.
[1186.87] Tony: DJI rock, they're the best.
[1188.79] Jae: They've had enough product iterations.
[1191.83] Jae: And like someone was saying, if GoPro thought
[1194.43] Jae: they'd get the dream unit from the first one out,
[1197.83] Jae: the perfect one without any kinks or anything,
[1200.23] Jae: they're living in my dream land.
[1203.31] Adam: Apparently, approximately 2,500 GoPro commas were recalled.
[1209.51] Jae: 2,500 worldwide.
[1211.03] Jae: That's not many then.
[1212.39] Adam: No, it's not really.
[1213.23] Adam: But then their recall came quite soon
[1214.95] Adam: after they started selling.
[1217.19] Adam: 2,500 thousand pound products is not an awful number.
[1224.71] Jae: How much R&D did they put into it?
[1227.11] Jae: There's probably a lot of costs that they've had.
[1228.63] Jae: Even marketing alone would have had quite a lot of costs.
[1232.55] Adam: Oh, you've got to think that they've lost the one Christmas
[1235.83] Adam: that they could have hoped to.
[1238.79] Adam: And now fighting their little DJI foldy thing
[1245.07] Adam: means that they're never gonna get that time again.
[1247.43] Tony: The mavic is for everyone who wants to go on holiday
[1251.07] Tony: and take it with them.
[1252.23] Tony: It's perfect.
[1253.31] Adam: And GoPro would have got a huge chunk of that market.
[1257.43] Adam: And now, and GoPro is still a really strong brand
[1260.79] Adam: amongst people who don't really know anything about drones.
[1263.47] Adam: So they've got a chance of getting it back,
[1265.11] Adam: but they're gonna have to spend that much more to do it.
[1267.63] Adam: And every time they do,
[1268.83] Adam: every time someone looks at that GoPro,
[1271.11] Adam: then they'll find themselves looking at an article
[1273.27] Adam: in the Guardian or whatever.
[1274.51] Adam: They'll probably mention the mavic as well.
[1277.35] Jae: They'll never have that free running back.
[1280.39] Jae: I mean, GoPro and their action cameras,
[1281.75] Jae: we've all known and loved if you've ever been FPVing.
[1284.95] Jae: Even they're under threat from other players in the market
[1288.43] Jae: for the action cameras.
[1289.27] Jae: So they'd run the risk of falling flat on their face
[1292.59] Jae: and going under, if you're not careful.
[1294.19] Tony: Well, no.
[1295.03] Tony: I don't think they'd ever go under.
[1296.87] Tony: I mean, you'd be surprised that company can always go under.
[1300.87] Tony: Have you ever paid enough money to be fine?
[1305.71] Adam: They may well need to wind up because, yeah, as you say,
[1308.35] Adam: they don't, you know, the GoPro used to command a huge cost.
[1315.79] Tony: It's still the press camera at the market.
[1319.07] Jae: It was used in broad class for action cameras
[1321.39] Jae: because, you know, so they had a massive portion of the market.
[1324.99] Adam: But now you can just as easily go to Sony.
[1329.67] Jae: Yeah, Sony, Garmin have their own unit.
[1333.27] Tony: There's several coming out.
[1335.51] Tony: They're not nice shapes, are they?
[1338.59] Jae: Oh, come on, the GoPro's not a pretty device.
[1341.11] Jae: Even to the point that you can get the similar shape
[1343.87] Jae: in a yummy that's even bright white, you know, it's so...
[1346.83] Jae: Or Polaroid branded.
[1348.79] Tony: Yeah, but actually, Almee have now just put their prices way up
[1352.95] Tony: because everyone's put the script on, you know, and made it.
[1357.03] NJ: But, exactly, it doesn't seem like the sensor, though.
[1359.67] NJ: Didn't Sony make the sensor for one of the GoPros,
[1362.03] NJ: if not a few of them?
[1363.11] NJ: Because I think it's down to the sensor at the end of the day.
[1366.99] NJ: And the GoPros have had fantastic sensors in them.
[1369.43] NJ: And that's actually been one of the things.
[1372.15] Jae: And the processor, they had the umbrella A7, wasn't it,
[1375.63] Jae: something in the four?
[1377.75] Jae: Umbrella?
[1379.07] Jae: No, umbrella, AMV.
[1380.35] Jae: Oh, umbrella, it's like Resident Evil.
[1382.75] Jae: Umbrella, my dear, no, it doesn't rain in Australia,
[1385.07] Jae: I think.
[1386.91] Jae: But, because that's what they're talking about
[1389.91] Jae: when they're moving beyond 4K, saying if it did 8K,
[1392.43] Jae: but they need the processor to handle the writing
[1394.55] Jae: to the card, to the actual color correction,
[1396.23] Jae: all that sort of stuff has to go on.
[1398.23] Jae: So it's not just the sensor.
[1399.83] Jae: It's the architecture to write the file
[1401.67] Jae: and process the file, digital signal processing.
[1404.99] Jae: Sorry, just quick, before-
[1406.59] Adam: The other thing, are you gonna say as well?
[1408.55] Adam: I was gonna say that the Karma,
[1410.47] Adam: I did go and have a look at the Karma back at Photokina
[1413.59] Adam: before the recall.
[1415.67] Adam: And as a piece of product design,
[1418.35] Adam: it was just nicer, it's still nicer than the Mavic.
[1422.35] Adam: It was just felt more convincing in the hand,
[1425.79] Adam: folding it out and opening it and closing it.
[1428.11] Adam: And you could just whip pull out
[1430.43] Adam: and you got a handheld gimbal,
[1433.19] Adam: like the, what's the other DJI thing?
[1437.51] Adam: With DJI, I'll charge you another 300 pounds
[1439.51] Adam: before it came built in for free,
[1441.19] Adam: in effect, with the Karma.
[1442.79] Adam: So the Karma's a whole movie kit for-
[1445.87] NJ: Yeah, that was the thing for me.
[1447.23] NJ: It felt more like a sort of a more geared
[1450.03] NJ: towards the adventurer that will go out
[1451.83] NJ: and do lots of things and swap it.
[1453.83] Adam: People who are already familiar with the GoPro brand,
[1456.35] Adam: but not necessarily familiar with DJI.
[1458.83] NJ: But why do we think more people in our world
[1463.87] NJ: perhaps on the drone side of things and the FPV side,
[1467.71] NJ: and why does it seem, I personally know more people
[1471.03] NJ: that speak towards the Mavic as soon as that came out.
[1474.59] NJ: So what was, what do we think-
[1476.79] Adam: We know and trust DJI and we've seen them get better.
[1482.15] Jae: And the size.
[1483.91] Adam: The size is very nice, but the size is comparable.
[1488.27] Jae: It goes down to an old big SLR camera size.
[1491.75] Jae: That is what has been so appealing for everyone, I think.
[1497.07] Tony: The Mavic does come in a very nice bag.
[1499.31] Tony: I would still buy a Mavic and then a handheld gimbal
[1505.19] Tony: over the GoPro Karma.
[1508.67] Jae: Well, that's just hateful.
[1510.67] Jae: You know, they are releasing just the GoPro airframe to buy.
[1514.35] Jae: I think it's 399 US dollars, so probably 400 pounds.
[1519.07] Jae: And that's just the airframe as a motor's flight controller
[1523.87] Jae: and maybe even a remote control or something.
[1525.99] Jae: But yeah.
[1527.23] Jae: No gimbal.
[1528.95] Jae: But yeah, well, the gimbal is always
[1530.95] Jae: the most appealing part for it, I don't know.
[1533.55] NJ: So that's just moving on.
[1535.47] NJ: I think we got a question earlier,
[1536.71] NJ: which I forgot to answer.
[1538.75] NJ: A few people were asking what that was.
[1540.11] NJ: That's the Jumper X73S for those that wanted to know
[1545.47] NJ: what that little micro brushless indoor was.
[1549.15] NJ: Heading back towards the FPV side of things.
[1551.59] NJ: Whoops.
[1553.83] NJ: Tony, what's been happening in the race scene?
[1556.75] NJ: You said there was an event out in Florida?
[1558.95] Tony: There was the Sebring race, which was held for a few days.
[1564.75] Tony: And I think another young guy won a sponsored Lumineer pilot.
[1571.47] Tony: I think his call sign is Mad Air.
[1575.67] Tony: Right.
[1577.31] Tony: And he was quick,
[1579.15] Tony: but our guys in the UK would have gone out there
[1584.07] Tony: and got first, second, third, fourth.
[1587.23] NJ: Oh, really?
[1588.07] Tony: Seriously.
[1588.91] NJ: Old statements.
[1590.47] NJ: Did you stop me from the race?
[1592.51] NJ: I was talking to everyone that was there.
[1594.91] Tony: It would have been like Ken, Fanny, Whitfield,
[1599.51] Tony: you know, all the top guys here
[1601.87] Tony: would have whipped all any of them.
[1604.67] Tony: They were fast and smooth, but I don't know.
[1608.51] Tony: There's something about being in the UK at the moment.
[1610.59] Tony: I think it's because we have to go out
[1614.71] Tony: in terrible conditions and fly in wind, rain, dreary weather.
[1621.23] NJ: It's the equivalent of actually training at altitude, right?
[1623.79] Tony: That's what you're saying.
[1625.31] Tony: Pretty much.
[1626.15] Tony: I do believe if we'd have gone over there,
[1628.51] Tony: if the lads, you know,
[1630.07] Tony: the top 10 lads that had gone over there,
[1632.15] Tony: they would have cleaned up, basically.
[1635.99] Tony: But it was a good event.
[1637.23] Tony: It looked well organized.
[1638.95] NJ: Was there any kind of names that we'd recognize there
[1641.31] Tony: rather than?
[1644.19] Tony: Johnny FPV was out there, you know,
[1646.35] Tony: from he'd been on Rotorate
[1647.99] Tony: and he was talking about the soft mounting,
[1649.91] Tony: if anyone's seen the stuff about the soft mounting stuff.
[1654.15] NJ: Yeah, that's a really interesting topic there.
[1657.55] NJ: And yeah, what's been your experience with soft mounting?
[1661.99] Tony: Last weekend, I flew with just me and my mate
[1665.71] Tony: went out last weekend, GFPV.
[1667.59] NJ: And we're talking about soft mounting the motors specifically.
[1670.39] Tony: It wasn't the motors.
[1671.59] Tony: I was just soft mounting my flight controller.
[1674.47] NJ: Oh, the flight controller, okay.
[1675.63] Tony: Yeah, and I repaired, hastily repaired my quad,
[1680.27] Tony: put another lead on my board
[1684.63] Tony: and quickly put it back together,
[1687.27] Tony: went out, met him at the field, started flying.
[1689.91] Tony: And we could both hear my quad sounded awful.
[1694.75] Tony: You could, he heard it.
[1696.87] Tony: He said, what's up with your quad?
[1698.59] Tony: Sounds terrible.
[1700.35] Tony: And I was like, I was landing it,
[1702.99] Tony: checking the motors for heat.
[1705.11] Tony: You know, it was like, well, nothing's been,
[1707.11] Tony: the props are brand new.
[1708.55] Tony: I don't know, what can it be?
[1710.31] Tony: Flew again, flew again.
[1712.07] Tony: I had to change my FPV cam
[1713.71] Tony: because I was having problems with it.
[1715.59] Tony: Changed that and then realized
[1717.51] Tony: that my soft mountings were all off.
[1720.87] Tony: So I redone all my soft mountains on the flight controller.
[1724.43] Tony: And this is using an F4 board.
[1728.39] Tony: Flew it again.
[1729.23] Tony: And you could hear straight away
[1731.39] Tony: after remounting the flight controller,
[1734.27] Tony: no sound from the motors.
[1735.99] Tony: It was, it started to fly great again.
[1739.23] Tony: It was like, when I didn't,
[1741.35] Tony: when I didn't have it set up properly,
[1743.91] Tony: it was locking in.
[1745.67] Tony: It was like, it felt like it had a delay.
[1748.71] Tony: And I was stuck in a position for like a millisecond
[1752.51] Tony: and then like a turn.
[1753.63] Tony: And I'd go, why is it not turning when I want it to turn?
[1756.91] Tony: And then it would stuck in that position and then stuck.
[1759.63] Tony: It was really, really weird.
[1761.55] Tony: But after that, it was fine.
[1764.63] NJ: Well, isn't it really interesting doing
[1768.59] NJ: the soft mounting flight controllers
[1771.03] NJ: and more recently the latest craze,
[1773.07] NJ: which was soft mounting the motors themselves.
[1776.07] NJ: And it's really a case of resonance in the quadcopter
[1779.87] NJ: and any flying machine with rotating parts,
[1783.75] NJ: planes, helicopters, it doesn't matter.
[1785.63] NJ: I mean, we can talk about commercial aircraft
[1788.03] NJ: that worth millions and millions
[1789.31] NJ: and have billions of pounds spent on development.
[1793.39] NJ: They've all got rotating parts.
[1794.71] NJ: No matter how amazing and high tolerance the parts are,
[1798.03] NJ: they have to be statically and dynamically balanced
[1802.31] NJ: so that they don't resonate at certain frequencies.
[1805.39] NJ: And we come back to our little quadcopters
[1808.79] NJ: and when you build those,
[1809.83] NJ: and this goes for if I was to build
[1811.87] NJ: 10 identical quadcopters in a row,
[1815.03] NJ: every single one of those
[1816.35] NJ: will have a slightly different resonance to it.
[1818.91] NJ: It will have different frequencies
[1820.51] NJ: and even changing battery,
[1822.59] NJ: you swap from a small battery to a large battery,
[1824.63] NJ: you're changing the mass of the quad,
[1826.07] NJ: that's going to affect how resonance
[1829.59] NJ: is moving through the quad.
[1831.83] NJ: In really bad cases, you get harmonic resonance
[1835.23] NJ: where those frequencies will be coupling together
[1837.99] NJ: and amplifying and I've actually seen that
[1840.43] NJ: on a couple of builds before
[1843.39] NJ: where you'll be hovering the aircraft
[1845.87] NJ: and all of a sudden it will just sit there
[1847.59] NJ: and start to build up and build up
[1849.35] NJ: into this really quite violent flutter
[1851.43] NJ: and that's an example of where it's harmonically resonating.
[1855.11] NJ: You could change, something as simple as changing the props
[1857.99] NJ: could suddenly make that all better
[1859.83] NJ: because you've moved that point of resonance away
[1862.87] NJ: and it's cured.
[1864.39] NJ: So even, and I think this also comes down
[1866.83] NJ: to soft mounting the motors,
[1868.71] NJ: you could have exactly the same thing.
[1870.43] NJ: Soft mounting the motors themselves might not,
[1873.59] NJ: it's sort of indirectly a solution.
[1875.63] NJ: It might sort that problem out
[1877.27] NJ: because you've just changed those resonance points
[1879.35] NJ: and then all of a sudden you're like,
[1880.35] NJ: there was the magic ticket.
[1881.79] NJ: You might have arguably got to the same conclusion
[1884.51] NJ: by changing the type of material you'd used
[1887.31] NJ: to soft mount the flight controller.
[1890.11] NJ: I've seen this time and time
[1891.23] NJ: and I've looked at the data,
[1893.07] NJ: I've done this in black box logging
[1894.75] NJ: and on one of my videos I actually show
[1897.31] NJ: a before and after screenshot of a brand new quad
[1899.75] NJ: with balanced brand new motors,
[1901.75] NJ: it's a brand new build and it was resonating horribly
[1905.07] NJ: and in flight I took some black box logs of it
[1907.83] NJ: and you can see on all three axis it was just a mess
[1910.27] NJ: and it flew terribly oscillated
[1912.59] NJ: and I experimented with different types of,
[1915.35] NJ: I used silicone, little silicone O-rings
[1918.59] NJ: on the flight controller and then I tried silicone on top
[1921.39] NJ: and like a rubber O-ring underneath
[1923.75] NJ: and I found one where all of a sudden
[1926.07] NJ: you had nice thin traces in the black box
[1928.47] NJ: and everything was good as gold
[1929.91] NJ: and then lo and behold it tuned up beautifully.
[1933.55] NJ: I might have got the same thing
[1934.71] NJ: by putting some soft mounting under the motors.
[1937.43] NJ: The point is you got to that point
[1939.15] NJ: where it was happy and balanced
[1941.75] NJ: and it's something you do have to experiment with
[1943.77] NJ: but it's not necessarily one thing or the other
[1946.31] NJ: that's led you to find that sweet spot.
[1949.07] NJ: The point is you shouldn't always say,
[1951.23] NJ: you shouldn't always assume it's down to the tune
[1953.51] NJ: that causes the problem.
[1954.35] NJ: There could be a resonance issue.
[1956.03] NJ: So, you know, it's worth experimenting with
[1957.95] NJ: but yeah, like you said, you could build another one
[1960.59] NJ: exactly like the one you had
[1961.79] NJ: and not have the problem at all.
[1962.99] Adam: Yeah.
[1963.83] Adam: I mean, I've learned,
[1964.67] Adam: a scientist would tell you to control your experiment.
[1967.63] NJ: Exactly, minimize the variables.
[1969.83] Adam: Yeah.
[1970.91] Jae: It was from my multi-way days
[1972.11] Jae: that I've always tried to soft mount the flight controller
[1974.87] Jae: and I always thought that it's the sensors
[1976.51] Jae: you want to stop having the vibration
[1979.19] Jae: wherever it's coming from.
[1980.57] Jae: And I think my philosophy was
[1982.23] Jae: that as long as you try and start there
[1984.19] Jae: and reduce it all sensors,
[1986.75] Jae: then you're onto a winner.
[1989.55] Jae: But it really came into effect similar to you Tony,
[1991.27] Jae: but mine was on kiss and I'd made a repair
[1995.03] Jae: and it would fly and it would seem okay
[1996.63] Jae: but after a couple of seconds being armed, it'd take off.
[1999.55] Jae: So it was just, it was doing strange things
[2001.43] Jae: that didn't feel right.
[2003.15] Jae: And it was amazing that it's a purely vibration
[2005.15] Jae: that came down to it.
[2005.99] Tony: Yeah, it was vibration.
[2008.03] Tony: The worst thing was like, you could hear it first.
[2011.83] Tony: We could both hear the motors change pitch.
[2015.35] Tony: You could hear the difference.
[2017.71] Tony: And then also, obviously I could feel the difference.
[2020.63] NJ: Do you know what?
[2021.47] NJ: That's a really important point as well Tony,
[2023.67] NJ: which I always say to people
[2024.95] NJ: that are trying to find a good tune
[2027.43] NJ: is I can quite often tell far more about why here
[2032.15] NJ: than what I see.
[2033.83] NJ: And especially a lot of the time,
[2035.51] NJ: like you could be filming,
[2037.91] NJ: you might wanna look back at your footage
[2039.75] NJ: to try and find the problem.
[2040.87] NJ: And if you're recording at 30 frames per second,
[2043.39] NJ: you might not spot some oscillation
[2045.51] NJ: that you would see at 60 frames per second.
[2047.55] NJ: But the one thing you can always use is your ear
[2049.79] NJ: and you can hear when a motor is unhappy.
[2052.51] NJ: You can hear it, but it's almost like a chirping
[2055.59] NJ: that lets you know that,
[2057.15] NJ: and when it lands, obviously you can check the temperature.
[2058.95] NJ: That's another sign as well.
[2060.03] NJ: I think that's a really underrated part
[2062.99] NJ: of getting a tune done well,
[2064.83] NJ: is to have the quad close to you and listen to the motors.
[2068.31] NJ: Definitely.
[2069.23] NJ: There is a notable difference between smooth and unhappy.
[2073.15] Tony: Yeah, definitely.
[2076.93] NJ: So yeah, it's interesting actually,
[2078.49] NJ: because that was the other thing I was going to say
[2081.77] NJ: is you kind of get a lot of the same,
[2084.41] NJ: I mean, these all fall into the same arena of a bad tune.
[2088.57] NJ: You've got your, obviously the resonance issue.
[2091.73] NJ: You've got the tune itself
[2093.49] NJ: and spotting when it's the tune and not the resonance.
[2096.33] NJ: And then the other thing people try and dial out
[2098.61] NJ: all the time, obviously, is prop wash.
[2101.93] NJ: And I think there's a lot of misconception around
[2105.17] NJ: what prop wash is and how to deal with it.
[2108.41] NJ: And it's something that I've actually,
[2113.17] NJ: I'm actually going to call Jack out here
[2115.25] NJ: and I'm only going to do it
[2116.09] NJ: because he's not here to defend himself.
[2118.69] NJ: He won't come on either.
[2120.97] NJ: Go for it.
[2121.81] NJ: No, no.
[2122.65] NJ: Jack's mentioned a few, I don't know if you've mentioned it.
[2125.05] NJ: I don't know anything about it.
[2125.89] NJ: But that was just something he said that I remember him.
[2128.85] NJ: All right, all right.
[2129.69] NJ: He said that when he had prop wash at the top,
[2131.81] NJ: when he was at top throttle,
[2133.01] NJ: he said he'd sometimes notice having this prop wash problem
[2135.65] NJ: at the, when he was in a punch out.
[2138.01] NJ: Of course, what you're dealing with there,
[2139.53] NJ: that's oscillation at the top, that's not prop wash.
[2142.85] NJ: What you're dealing with, when we talk about prop wash,
[2145.37] NJ: we're effectively talking about stalling the propeller or.
[2149.01] Tony: And it comes down into its own.
[2151.01] NJ: Yeah, it's coming down into its own wash.
[2152.89] NJ: And if you think about what that is,
[2154.53] NJ: it's falling into disturbed air
[2156.53] NJ: because a propeller is just a wing
[2158.37] NJ: and it has to obey the same laws of physics
[2160.97] NJ: as every other wing out there,
[2162.61] NJ: be it on a jet liner, be it on a helicopter.
[2165.69] NJ: But I mean, our closest relative
[2168.09] NJ: in terms of what a quadcopter is
[2169.93] NJ: and it's rotating propellers going downwards
[2173.29] NJ: is a helicopter.
[2174.89] NJ: And there's a big thing that helicopters,
[2176.53] NJ: full-size helicopters have to avoid.
[2178.53] NJ: And that's called settling with power
[2180.29] NJ: or it's also called vortex ring state.
[2183.85] NJ: And it's a condition where you have to avoid
[2187.21] NJ: ending up falling into your,
[2189.61] NJ: actually falling into the air that you're pushing down.
[2193.09] NJ: And there are certain scenarios
[2194.45] NJ: where you'll end up in that kind of condition.
[2196.93] NJ: And there's kind of three main situations you have to avoid
[2200.33] NJ: or three things coming together.
[2202.53] NJ: And one of those is descending too fast
[2205.29] NJ: and not moving with enough air speed.
[2208.53] NJ: So you end up essentially catching up
[2211.65] NJ: with that disturbed air
[2212.85] NJ: because as soon as that propeller
[2214.77] NJ: has taken in the clean air,
[2216.37] NJ: what's disappearing beneath it is churned up
[2219.05] NJ: and it's dirty.
[2219.89] NJ: And the last thing you wanna do is fall into that.
[2222.73] NJ: Now, with a quadcopter,
[2225.49] NJ: one of the easiest ways to actually experience prop wash
[2229.81] NJ: is when you change direction very, very fast.
[2233.13] NJ: So if you're going in one direction,
[2235.45] NJ: you're immediately 180
[2236.85] NJ: and you basically then traveling backwards into air
[2240.85] NJ: that is now coming the wrong way through the propeller.
[2243.97] NJ: And what you're essentially doing is
[2246.05] NJ: your propellers are completely lost
[2248.21] NJ: in all that disturbed air.
[2249.81] NJ: And the propellers are trying to resettle the air flow.
[2253.73] NJ: And while that's happening, you're getting this wobble.
[2256.57] NJ: And that wobble is prop wash.
[2259.21] NJ: And it's the same thing when you come out the split S.
[2261.73] NJ: You flip to 180, you come down
[2264.01] NJ: and then as soon as you come down,
[2265.93] NJ: if you're not following a nice clean arc,
[2268.09] NJ: if you just fall,
[2269.45] NJ: you end up falling backwards into your own air
[2271.41] NJ: and the same thing happens.
[2272.69] NJ: You end up in disturbed air.
[2274.41] NJ: The props are trying to reestablish air flow
[2276.81] NJ: and you end up with that situation
[2278.29] NJ: where you'll get this prop wash.
[2280.29] NJ: And the easiest way to avoid it
[2283.81] NJ: is just not to get into these situations
[2286.05] NJ: of low forward speed or low air speed,
[2288.69] NJ: whatever direction you're going in
[2290.05] NJ: and a high rate of descent.
[2291.85] NJ: If you avoid those two things,
[2293.25] NJ: so if you're doing a split S,
[2294.65] NJ: come out of it with a nice clean arc as you come round.
[2297.85] NJ: And if you look at some of the best pilots out there,
[2300.05] NJ: best freestylers, they will do that.
[2302.29] NJ: But I tell you now,
[2303.13] NJ: anyone that says my quad has no prop wash.
[2305.77] NJ: It's lying.
[2306.61] NJ: You're lying, you're breaking the laws of physics.
[2308.49] NJ: It just doesn't work like that.
[2309.93] Adam: Are you saying also though,
[2311.65] Adam: something that would be a really bad idea
[2314.65] Adam: that would create its own kind of prop wash
[2316.85] Adam: would be to hang underneath your copter on a snowboard
[2321.41] Adam: because that snowboard would have its own physics too.
[2325.33] NJ: Yeah, that was quite interesting.
[2327.41] NJ: I actually noticed that, wasn't it?
[2329.57] Adam: Yeah, I watched his how-to video,
[2331.41] Adam: this making of, if you like video this week.
[2334.93] Adam: I was saying before the show started,
[2336.49] Adam: it annoyed me a great deal
[2337.57] Adam: because he actually came across quite well.
[2340.77] Adam: But he also had to cut out quite a lot
[2343.93] Adam: because of course a snowboard does act as a propeller
[2346.77] Adam: and spins around like no one's business.
[2349.25] Adam: And I had a lot of trouble with that.
[2351.73] NJ: When I looked at that video, that quadcopter,
[2355.33] NJ: was it, you were saying that he commissioned that film?
[2358.13] Adam: Deck of whatever, 16 prop, yeah.
[2360.73] NJ: It was crazy.
[2361.57] NJ: I mean, so he, do you know, was it a group that he-
[2364.85] Adam: There was a, it was a marketing,
[2366.25] Adam: he got, they had a pile of money from Samsung,
[2368.73] Adam: I think it was, to do something-
[2370.37] Adam: No, it was Samsung.
[2371.21] Adam: You just have to go on the internet.
[2373.73] Adam: I've worked with Samsung in the past.
[2374.57] Adam: With those on from scratch to do that,
[2376.05] Adam: because it is-
[2376.89] Jae: Yeah, so that-
[2377.73] Adam: And they did it in Lapland
[2379.49] Adam: where there were no real rules or anything.
[2382.09] Adam: Santa said it was fine.
[2387.01] Tony: They should have come to me.
[2388.73] Tony: You could lift me with twins.
[2390.37] Tony: Are you Santa?
[2391.21] Tony: You could have saved them loads of money.
[2392.45] Jae: No, no, he actually is a lot lighter.
[2395.45] Adam: Yeah.
[2396.29] Adam: Well, they had to strap him on using metal
[2398.21] Adam: and a sort of bracy thing.
[2399.97] Adam: You know, he wasn't,
[2400.81] Adam: he wasn't just holding on on his own weight.
[2402.73] Adam: Because that was the thing.
[2403.57] Adam: I was watching that guy.
[2404.39] Adam: Well, I can't lift my own weight by one arm.
[2406.69] Adam: Admittedly, I am fatter than that man.
[2409.81] Adam: Still, I wouldn't want to be dangling by one hand.
[2412.73] Adam: But he wasn't, apparently.
[2415.21] Adam: Yeah, he did lift it.
[2416.05] Jae: I'd like to see that though.
[2417.17] Jae: I did one of those.
[2418.01] Jae: Let's start tinkering and see if we can make it fly out.
[2420.53] Adam: It did really make you think,
[2421.77] Adam: let's build something massive.
[2425.09] Jae: What we did with living in the puddles.
[2425.93] Jae: Let's have a go.
[2426.77] Jae: I mean, it did look a lot of fun.
[2429.85] Tony: That's, we should do that on the LDA,
[2432.41] Tony: LDO games next year.
[2434.61] Tony: We've got to move-
[2435.45] Jae: Are you offering to be the person that's right?
[2436.77] Tony: I will get lifted.
[2437.65] Adam: We have to be careful though,
[2440.05] Adam: because as Frank's telling us,
[2443.65] Adam: people are now marketing shotgun cartridges
[2445.89] Adam: with Skynet drone defense written on.
[2451.69] Jae: But it is still illegal to shoot down an aircraft
[2453.77] Jae: or endanger an aircraft in the UK,
[2456.41] Jae: regardless of what aircraft it is.
[2457.89] Adam: Yeah, in the UK, that's like the dodgy.
[2459.85] Adam: In the US, it's probably fine.
[2462.13] Jae: No, in the US, it's the same as well.
[2463.65] Jae: You cannot endanger an aircraft,
[2465.85] Jae: which means you can't shoot one down
[2467.69] Jae: or even shoot at it.
[2468.93] Jae: So, yeah, over the years,
[2471.73] Jae: in the UK, there's a lot of people
[2473.61] Jae: that have said, I'm going to go get my shotgun.
[2475.57] Jae: And it's always gone in the favor of the person flying.
[2479.25] Jae: If it's a threat made against the aircraft.
[2481.69] Adam: Here, yes, but we have a large number of rational judges.
[2485.49] Adam: Even the US has demonstrated itself to be a bit mad.
[2488.81] Jae: Okay, in recent years, maybe not lately,
[2491.69] Jae: it might be a bit different,
[2492.85] Jae: but let's keep the politics out of this.
[2497.69] NJ: Let me move us swiftly on.
[2500.93] NJ: Tony, what's that you've got up on your shelf there?
[2504.01] NJ: I've spotted a clock.
[2506.25] Tony: This is the new Revo,
[2508.77] Tony: which has just been released yesterday,
[2513.09] Tony: or the 31st got released.
[2515.81] NJ: Marvelous, I want.
[2516.89] NJ: So, tell us what's different about this design.
[2521.33] NJ: I said the arms, look the wrong way around.
[2523.33] Tony: The arms, yes, look at the arms.
[2525.85] Tony: They're not the standard arms, which would be that way.
[2530.65] Tony: See the difference.
[2532.81] Adam: Absolutely, so that's the way you're holding it.
[2536.29] Tony: So, this is the way I fly it, Adam.
[2539.49] NJ: Straight out, whatever you're after.
[2541.33] NJ: So, I presume that's in an effort to get just low drag.
[2545.17] NJ: If you, yeah.
[2546.01] Tony: Low drag, clean air.
[2547.57] Tony: I mean, it's 15% more thrust on the calculations.
[2552.33] Tony: I've seen battery improvements,
[2554.29] Tony: whereas I can fly 30, 40 seconds longer with this.
[2561.41] NJ: Right, wow.
[2562.65] NJ: So, you must have to run some crazy up tilt
[2564.69] NJ: on the camera as well, then?
[2566.41] Tony: Yeah, I'm at 45 at the moment,
[2569.41] Tony: but I've got a wide angle lens to make it a little bit easier.
[2571.93] Tony: Just put a GoPro 3 lens in there.
[2575.97] NJ: So, that's your racing setup.
[2577.97] NJ: Is that what, just tell us what components
[2580.49] NJ: you've put in that?
[2582.33] Tony: This one is a Revo board, an F4 race flight.
[2588.45] NJ: The race flight, yeah.
[2589.53] Tony: Yeah, it's just got a 30-amp little Bs on.
[2593.97] NJ: And the races?
[2595.45] Tony: These are DYS 2205, 2300 KV.
[2601.17] Tony: Brad has just built me another one with an F-pack setup.
[2607.09] Tony: I've got the 24,000 F4Es on,
[2611.49] Tony: and the F30 ESCs on there.
[2616.97] NJ: And Tom, so all I do, generally speaking,
[2619.73] NJ: I'm not a racer, I do it occasionally for a bit of fun,
[2622.85] NJ: but it's not a big attraction for me.
[2625.21] NJ: Now, I know you race, race, race, race, race all the time.
[2628.73] NJ: So, how different does that feel
[2632.01] NJ: compared to the quads that you have been flying
[2634.17] NJ: in terms of accelerating from standstill
[2637.29] NJ: and when it's up to speed?
[2638.45] NJ: I mean, do you, how is it in the corners?
[2641.65] Tony: The faster you go, the better it handles.
[2645.65] NJ: Right.
[2646.49] Tony: I was flying a track last Sunday,
[2649.01] Tony: and I was like, we had this long banking left hander
[2653.53] Tony: through three gates, and I was coming up to it
[2657.57] Tony: and like, scary, it was like, oh my God,
[2660.17] Tony: I'm not gonna make it, I'm not gonna make it.
[2661.77] Tony: And if I was flying slow, I didn't make it.
[2664.89] Tony: The faster I went, the better it performed.
[2668.29] NJ: Right, actually, and the wire,
[2670.93] NJ: the wire around the outside, that is wire, isn't it?
[2674.37] NJ: So it's like a brace or?
[2675.85] Tony: It's like a Teflon climbing rig.
[2681.17] Jae: Right, I think, yeah.
[2682.53] Tony: Like a 130 pound braking strain
[2685.81] Tony: where you can tension it on the back of the quad
[2687.89] Tony: to tighten it up.
[2688.93] Tony: It basically holds it in the X shape.
[2691.73] Tony: I mean, I crashed this, I don't know, six, seven times,
[2697.41] Tony: hard crashes.
[2700.65] Tony: And it-
[2701.49] Jae: How much did you swear after you crashed?
[2702.65] Jae: Right.
[2703.49] Adam: Because that's how we know how much you've built.
[2705.01] Adam: Not a lot.
[2706.53] Adam: I guess not at all if he's confident it's fine.
[2710.05] Tony: You know, it's just a good-
[2710.89] Tony: I was really confident with it,
[2712.33] Tony: and it performed really well, and it flies good.
[2716.45] Tony: And I'm looking forward to the Bradder's build,
[2720.77] Tony: who's built me another one,
[2722.81] Tony: which is even lighter than this one.
[2724.49] Tony: I've got smaller,
[2727.33] Tony: these are like the Mark 1 motor mounts.
[2732.77] Tony: We've actually got rid of all of this
[2735.77] Tony: is now missing on the new frame, which is being released.
[2740.25] Tony: The carbon has gone up from 2.2 mil to three mil.
[2746.33] Tony: So it's a little bit more durable,
[2748.81] Tony: and there's just no drag.
[2751.33] Tony: I mean, look-
[2752.49] Adam: With the string around the edge,
[2753.81] Adam: I just always wondered if that'd be-
[2755.45] Tony: It plays a tune.
[2756.73] Tony: You know you're going fast enough because it whistles.
[2759.21] Adam: Whistle, yeah.
[2760.05] Tony: As long as it whistles, you know you're going fast.
[2762.33] Tony: But you can see the aerodynamic-
[2764.89] Jae: Like a Kettle point.
[2766.33] Jae: Well, when I was just looking on the page
[2768.29] Jae: and looking from the top view,
[2769.69] Jae: it looks like one of the microbrushed things
[2772.25] Jae: because just there's these small little thin arms
[2774.73] Jae: and like plates, but it does look impressive.
[2778.01] Tony: It's definitely out there and it's definitely different.
[2781.69] Jae: I do know a crash tester or crash test dummy,
[2784.29] Jae: I don't know, sometimes,
[2786.61] Jae: who happily put one through their paces.
[2789.17] Jae: I think he's known well in Mr. Kettle.
[2792.41] Tony: We're hopefully going to send in NJ Tech one thing,
[2796.29] Tony: so you'll get one soon, NJ.
[2798.69] NJ: Are you saying he's going to crash it a lot to test it?
[2800.97] NJ: Yeah, although I don't crash.
[2802.69] NJ: I don't crash.
[2803.53] NJ: It's a myth.
[2804.37] Tony: He doesn't.
[2805.21] Tony: I can fly quickly.
[2807.21] Tony: He flies backwards, an LDI game.
[2809.21] Tony: So he was like, I'm going backwards.
[2811.25] Tony: And I was like, I have to-
[2812.41] Jae: NJ doesn't crash.
[2813.97] Tony: Take my goggles off.
[2814.81] Jae: NJ doesn't crash.
[2815.65] Jae: The crowd rushes up to him.
[2817.13] NJ: Exactly.
[2817.97] NJ: That's what they say, isn't it?
[2819.29] NJ: Never fear crashing, the ground will rush up to catch you.
[2823.37] NJ: There's mostly trees these days.
[2825.17] NJ: I'm not a big ground hitter,
[2826.85] NJ: but I do occasionally hitting trees.
[2830.01] NJ: And more recently, the top of trees as well,
[2832.61] NJ: but it's quite worrying
[2833.81] NJ: because I'm definitely not a climber.
[2835.13] NJ: I always seem to manage to rope someone else.
[2837.25] Tony: That's my second job now,
[2838.61] Tony: is getting cords out of trees.
[2840.17] Tony: It's 50 pound ago.
[2842.05] Tony: I travel anywhere in the country and I have a big pole.
[2845.97] NJ: You've got the head for heights though.
[2848.37] Tony: No, I just get my big pole.
[2850.01] Adam: He just likes saying he has a big pole
[2851.81] Adam: on the as many media as possible.
[2855.57] Jae: Yes.
[2856.41] Jae: Do you get discount if you don't eat meat?
[2858.37] Tony: You do.
[2859.29] Tony: normal percent.
[2861.69] Jae: Well, oh, okay.
[2862.53] Jae: Go back to the carry house then.
[2866.09] Adam: 50 quid is very reasonable.
[2867.69] Adam: If say the person with the drone is in Scotland,
[2871.17] Adam: or are you going to charge transport?
[2872.69] Tony: Very, very reasonable if they're in Scotland,
[2875.05] Tony: 50 quid call out.
[2877.01] Tony: Yeah.
[2878.13] Tony: No, so this is like the third quarter of rescue.
[2880.57] Tony: I rescued Adams twice from two different trees.
[2885.01] Tony: So down at Hidden Valley,
[2887.05] Tony: there's two trees named after Adam.
[2890.41] Tony: He doesn't mean me.
[2892.61] Tony: No, not that Adam.
[2895.97] Tony: And we've got a GFPV who stacked it in a tree
[2899.69] Tony: in dork in the other day.
[2900.77] Tony: I went and rescued him.
[2902.53] Tony: He's got out of a tree, but yeah, no, it's all good.
[2906.25] Jae: I've heard if you get one of the new Tyrannus radios,
[2910.17] Jae: you don't actually crash into trees anymore.
[2912.13] Jae: Because that's so...
[2912.97] Jae: Is that going to cure it for me?
[2913.81] Jae: Is that going to cure it for me?
[2914.65] Jae: The white one.
[2915.49] Jae: Oh, have you got one, anyone who's got one then?
[2917.85] Jae: I've not seen one.
[2919.01] Jae: Have you seen one?
[2920.21] Tony: I might have seen one.
[2921.53] Tony: I saw one this morning.
[2922.77] Jae: I saw one online.
[2924.09] Jae: Yeah, I haven't seen one yet.
[2926.97] NJ: Yeah, it's quite concerning that I get these products now.
[2930.13] NJ: And the first thing I do is grab a screwdriver
[2931.93] NJ: and just pull them to pieces.
[2933.69] Jae: I know.
[2934.53] Jae: Let's have a look at this
[2935.37] NJ: and see what it looks like inside.
[2937.17] NJ: But how does it tick?
[2938.97] NJ: Yeah, the Tyrannus QX7.
[2941.25] NJ: It's, I think it's brilliant.
[2943.61] NJ: For the price point,
[2945.93] NJ: I'm very impressed with what I'm seeing so far.
[2948.77] NJ: I think the only kind of big complaint
[2951.45] NJ: for me with, and it's not just this,
[2953.89] NJ: it's the other Tyrannus QX9D as well,
[2955.73] NJ: is just, it's the gimbals.
[2957.93] NJ: And I've been spoiled over the years
[2959.85] NJ: with having great radios with great gimbals.
[2962.53] NJ: And my last set of spectrum radios,
[2964.97] NJ: you know, that's one thing spectrum always got right.
[2967.97] NJ: The gimbals were beautiful.
[2969.57] NJ: And that is your,
[2970.57] NJ: that's your interaction with your aircraft.
[2972.89] NJ: That's the main bit.
[2973.89] NJ: That's the bit.
[2974.73] NJ: So for me, the terrain,
[2977.33] NJ: both terraces are just wonderful at the, you know,
[2979.89] NJ: anything you can think of in terms of, you know,
[2982.13] NJ: using the logical switches and set up
[2984.01] NJ: and anything you can think of you want it,
[2986.61] NJ: you want it to happen, it will do it.
[2988.17] NJ: There's a way to do it.
[2989.65] NJ: But it's that interface bit
[2991.29] NJ: that I just feel needs the improvement.
[2993.61] NJ: So I'm hoping, what I've heard is the hall sensors
[2997.53] NJ: are coming out for the QX7.
[3001.25] NJ: Obviously the M9 ones are out,
[3002.73] NJ: which fit the Tyrannus X9D plus and Tyrannus X9D.
[3008.73] NJ: But the plugs on those gimbals
[3010.45] NJ: won't plug into the plugs on the X7.
[3014.33] NJ: So they are, they are bringing out,
[3016.53] NJ: they will physically fit in, but they won't plug in.
[3019.93] NJ: So those are coming out
[3021.25] NJ: and I've asked very specially that those get sent over
[3025.69] NJ: as soon as they are so that I can form an opinion on them.
[3028.93] NJ: But that's something I will definitely want to do
[3031.05] NJ: more or less straight away.
[3032.17] NJ: And hopefully they'll just feel a bit more premium.
[3035.53] NJ: Actually, I will ask Paul over at BMS web
[3039.73] NJ: because I know he's just put the M9 sensors in his Tyrannus.
[3043.57] NJ: So I'd be interested to know
[3044.41] NJ: what the difference in feel between them are.
[3046.33] NJ: It's hard to get them anywhere.
[3047.37] NJ: They're all sold out immediately.
[3048.69] NJ: So obviously it's something that people want.
[3052.01] NJ: But yeah, but as a radio it's great.
[3054.57] NJ: It's a hundred pounds for us at the minute for the...
[3058.53] NJ: Is that what you're asking?
[3059.73] NJ: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[3060.77] Tony: A hundred groups for the X7
[3062.01] Tony: and the normal Tyrannus is what too?
[3065.17] NJ: It's about 165.
[3066.57] NJ: It's about the speed price for the normal Tyrannus.
[3070.05] NJ: So, you know...
[3071.17] NJ: It's an ugly looking thing.
[3072.61] NJ: And not the...
[3074.09] NJ: Easy there, spectrum boy.
[3075.77] NJ: And the M9, the whole sense of gimbals
[3079.41] NJ: are about 20 pounds each.
[3081.25] NJ: So, you know, that gets you in under the price
[3085.09] NJ: of a regular Tyrannus to get the X7 with the whole sensors.
[3088.09] NJ: I mean, the other thing you lose from the X7
[3091.57] NJ: between the X7 and the X9D
[3093.61] NJ: is you lose two switches that are on the top
[3096.73] NJ: and you lose the trim tabs that are on the side.
[3099.57] NJ: But trim tabs are personally,
[3100.93] NJ: I've only ever used those for fixed wing stuff,
[3103.05] NJ: you know, for changing flaps,
[3104.41] NJ: the degrees of the flaps on a plane.
[3106.81] NJ: But I don't know, does anyone in the quad world
[3109.41] NJ: use those trim flaps?
[3110.41] NJ: I don't think so.
[3112.49] Tony: No, I think I'm just...
[3116.57] Jae: It depends on what flight control.
[3118.09] Jae: I know the gains we used on the NASA stuff, DJI.
[3122.89] Jae: That's the only time I've ever known anyone use those.
[3125.77] Adam: Oh, that's quite a good idea.
[3126.61] Adam: It looks a lot better.
[3128.01] Adam: I love the whole, the white, don't you think?
[3130.13] Adam: It feels great.
[3130.97] Jae: Yeah, it looks 10 times better.
[3133.93] NJ: Yeah, we really shouldn't include Jay in this conversation.
[3138.01] Jae: No, no, I'm sorry, but you know the thing
[3139.73] Jae: that bugs me the most about the old Tyrannus
[3141.37] Jae: is the little flower at the top for the speaker.
[3143.57] Jae: I mean, did they go to...
[3145.29] Jae: Yeah, that's the pollen.
[3147.13] Jae: That alone, if they change that,
[3148.69] Jae: it would make it 10 times, you know, twice as good.
[3151.93] Tony: The BSM says the M7 gimbals make it a killer radio.
[3158.69] NJ: There we go, there we go.
[3160.53] Tony: And to be honest, okay.
[3163.13] Tony: That's all I do, cover killing balls.
[3165.85] Jae: A hundred pounds is at a reasonable cost.
[3171.01] NJ: I might change.
[3171.85] NJ: A hundred pounds for that radio
[3174.29] NJ: and the amount of technology that's in there
[3176.33] NJ: and what it can do in terms of its adaptability
[3180.05] NJ: to kind of just about anything is,
[3182.61] NJ: I think it's really, really very good value.
[3186.25] NJ: For me, just as a seasoned RCA,
[3189.69] NJ: who's tried lots and lots of different radios,
[3191.93] NJ: the gimbals, the feel of the gimbals,
[3193.77] NJ: I just want better quality out of that.
[3195.65] NJ: But that's an upgradeable thing.
[3197.49] NJ: Everything else about it and the redesign
[3199.73] NJ: of certain aspects like the location of the trainer ports
[3202.41] NJ: now on the top, so you're not sitting on top of connections
[3204.89] NJ: if it's in your lap and you're using the simulator,
[3207.49] NJ: for instance, on the computer.
[3209.85] NJ: They've thought about lots of thought and redesign
[3213.33] NJ: that's gone into that and that kind of thing's
[3215.45] NJ: really apparent.
[3216.33] NJ: When you take these apart a lot,
[3217.97] NJ: you spot when designers have been lazy
[3221.05] NJ: and just gone, yeah, just chuck that on.
[3223.33] NJ: Or where they've just made the extra effort,
[3226.37] NJ: it becomes very apparent.
[3228.13] NJ: And I see a lot of really positive redesigns in that radio.
[3233.13] NJ: And yeah, to get it out of that price point,
[3235.81] NJ: it's very hard not to recommend that radio.
[3239.17] Adam: I mean, the FM web does say he really loves the flaps.
[3244.33] NJ: Oh, they have tried to call.
[3245.97] NJ: What do you use the flaps for then, Paul?
[3250.49] Adam: All right, maybe it's a good idea not to ask him
[3252.89] Adam: what he does.
[3253.73] Jae: Well, I don't know what he's implementing them for.
[3263.02] Adam: What was I going to say?
[3263.86] Tony: Is there any more chats?
[3265.26] Tony: Yeah, any more.
[3266.1] Adam: Well, there were two things.
[3269.06] Adam: Frank was earlier pointing out that some Skywalker X8s
[3273.7] Adam: were found with grenades on them in Mosul and Iraq.
[3277.22] Adam: That wasn't any of you, was it?
[3279.82] Jae: Good lord.
[3280.66] Jae: Good lord.
[3282.82] Jae: Payload test.
[3284.38] Adam: Yeah, yeah, quite a payload test.
[3288.74] Adam: But you know,
[3292.18] Adam: but let's not get drawn down that.
[3294.74] Adam: We've also been asked why none of the FR Sky TXs,
[3297.42] Adam: or do you want to talk about drones being used
[3300.18] Adam: to blow people up?
[3302.18] Adam: Not really.
[3306.26] Tony: We all know they can be used for good and bad.
[3309.62] Adam: I think we all know that humans in general
[3313.78] Adam: have their problems.
[3315.1] Adam: Not everyone's perfect.
[3316.7] Adam: Some people have some bad ideas.
[3318.9] Adam: Some people have some very creative, bad ideas.
[3323.42] Adam: Hashtag room in the hobby, for sure.
[3325.58] Jae: Exactly.
[3326.42] Jae: They were all fixed swing though, I believe.
[3328.42] Jae: I believe the techs they were using
[3329.86] Jae: were all fixed swing in it.
[3331.58] Adam: Yeah, well they want range, obviously.
[3334.74] Adam: FPV asks, why do none of the FR Sky TXs have dual antennas?
[3339.9] Adam: Even the cheap fly sky does.
[3342.54] NJ: I've never seen any real range problems
[3346.22] NJ: with by not going that route.
[3350.74] NJ: I think it's really that kind of diversity thing,
[3354.94] NJ: this is why the clove leaf antennas,
[3356.66] NJ: the circular polarizer antennas are so popular
[3360.74] NJ: on putting them on the aircraft themselves
[3363.14] NJ: and having the aircraft turned through various angles
[3366.62] NJ: and going in and out of polarization.
[3368.74] NJ: But there are radios that do it
[3372.9] NJ: that maybe you don't know about.
[3374.14] NJ: I know, was it the DX9 had the two antennas in?
[3379.86] NJ: The actual radio itself, the Spectrum DX9, I think,
[3384.5] Jae: had it.
[3385.34] NJ: Oh yeah, it does, because it did indeed.
[3386.66] NJ: Yeah, it does.
[3387.7] NJ: There are a few that have it.
[3388.7] NJ: Does the Horace have it?
[3389.7] NJ: Because that had range issues.
[3391.62] NJ: And I thought maybe that did have.
[3393.06] Tony: It had name issues as well.
[3395.66] NJ: I don't like the name.
[3397.38] Adam: And I guess it's true for most of the situations
[3399.74] Adam: we're talking about, that people aren't going to be
[3401.22] Adam: trying to reach seven kilometer ranges or anything.
[3403.58] NJ: Yeah, and I think generally speaking,
[3406.02] NJ: you're more or less flying out in the area
[3408.74] NJ: that you want to fly out in in terms of,
[3411.06] NJ: I'm going out that way.
[3412.18] NJ: And in terms of projection and focus, then it's fine.
[3415.7] NJ: The only time, if you really want to see
[3418.06] NJ: where those dipole antennas will fall over
[3421.62] NJ: and not work as well, wherever that,
[3425.26] NJ: if you bend to your aerial at 90 degrees
[3427.34] NJ: and you fly off to that side,
[3429.74] NJ: so this is kind of the dead spot of the dipole antenna,
[3432.74] NJ: that's where those will really fall over.
[3437.54] NJ: So you're always generally speaking
[3439.26] NJ: trying to fly out in front of yourself.
[3442.38] Tony: It's like a donut sticking around you.
[3448.34] Tony: If you've got your antenna.
[3450.26] NJ: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
[3452.54] NJ: Yeah, it's polarizing that way,
[3455.7] NJ: depending on which way you have your antenna
[3457.82] NJ: and which way you're pointing it,
[3458.86] NJ: which is also why they say never point the antenna
[3461.5] NJ: straight towards the quad.
[3462.54] NJ: Again, you're putting that dead point out.
[3463.98] NJ: It's radiating out in that donut shape, as Tony says,
[3467.94] NJ: from perpendicular to the actual antenna itself.
[3472.02] NJ: But there's lots of room for experimenting with that.
[3476.34] NJ: Yeah, you could, I know some people who have put
[3479.46] NJ: circular polarized antennas onto the radios themselves
[3483.54] NJ: or use a higher DBI antenna, but that's the other thing.
[3487.18] NJ: I've tried that using like a five DBI antenna or an eight DBI.
[3491.9] NJ: They all have different effects.
[3494.02] Adam: Well, we're following our checks.
[3496.22] Tony: Very, very far.
[3498.3] Tony: And it was fine with my thrice guy.
[3500.66] NJ: Yeah, both Tyrannus have excellent range,
[3502.74] NJ: just on the standard.
[3503.58] NJ: Yeah, they're really, really good.
[3505.02] NJ: 150 milliamps, I think they're.
[3509.02] Adam: How long does the battery last?
[3512.46] NJ: Milliwatts, sorry, 150 milliwatts.
[3515.06] NJ: I haven't tested that yet.
[3516.38] NJ: I don't know what the internal,
[3519.58] NJ: well, I was sent the 800 milliamp battery for that.
[3522.7] NJ: And I run a 2000 milliamp battery in my X9D.
[3527.82] NJ: So I'm expecting it not to run anywhere near as long,
[3530.22] NJ: but I don't know how efficient the new one is
[3531.98] NJ: versus the old one.
[3532.86] NJ: So I will test that and I'll try and get some information
[3537.42] NJ: on that and that's what you know.
[3539.22] Tony: We're gonna find out in part.
[3540.94] Tony: Two days racing or days flying, isn't it?
[3543.62] NJ: I would like to think so.
[3544.94] NJ: I like the fact there's the option there
[3546.74] NJ: to just run standard double A's in there.
[3548.9] NJ: And you can buy lithium ion double A's now
[3553.78] NJ: that will last a very decent amount of time.
[3557.82] NJ: So you could go that route or look
[3561.22] NJ: for a 2000 milliamp rechargeable pack.
[3563.9] NJ: They're not a lot of money, nickel metal hydride
[3566.38] NJ: or a two cell LiPo.
[3568.46] NJ: There's lots of options there.
[3569.66] NJ: But yeah, in terms of its efficiency against the X9D,
[3573.7] NJ: I'm not sure yet that will take me a little bit of time
[3576.02] NJ: to test, but I will report back when I know.
[3579.86] Jae: Hopefully later this week, you might as well,
[3582.26] Jae: hopefully fly it then, hopefully.
[3583.5] NJ: Well, this storm's now taking over, isn't it?
[3585.66] NJ: It's just hit Cornwall, I think,
[3587.82] NJ: and it's working its way towards us.
[3589.74] NJ: So I think by-
[3590.58] Tony: Am I gonna be able to work tomorrow?
[3594.1] Jae: Well, the weather will do the work for you.
[3596.7] Tony: Well, I need to work.
[3598.98] Tony: I need to go out there and glaze in hygienist up.
[3602.66] NJ: I think you're probably all right, actually.
[3604.22] NJ: I think it's moving kind of northeast direction.
[3607.9] NJ: So I think where you are, you might be okay.
[3611.54] NJ: Don't quote me on that.
[3612.7] NJ: I don't want to be doing my career.
[3620.55] NJ: But yeah, I think we're probably about there, aren't we?
[3624.71] Tony: I think we've gone online,
[3626.67] Tony: but it seemed to go quite quickly to it.
[3630.67] Jae: It did, actually, you know,
[3631.95] Jae: because we've had so much fun.
[3634.92] Jae: That's not to me always.
[3637.8] Jae: No, but well, we're back again next week,
[3640.76] Jae: is there anything else anyone was to close with for you guys?
[3644.56] Adam: Apparently, the switches on the side
[3647.44] Adam: can be used for arming the flaps.
[3650.2] Adam: That's why.
[3651.04] Jae: Yeah, that's number one.
[3653.0] Adam: On the top.
[3655.28] Adam: So at least we've, it's nice to round off anything,
[3657.96] Adam: you know, questions we've added, open to everything.
[3660.44] NJ: Sadly, I'm-
[3661.84] NJ: I don't trust my followers, that's the problem.
[3664.8] Adam: I'm going to be at the Reading Flight Club
[3667.56] Adam: talking drones and talking about my book
[3670.6] Adam: to some real-life people in real-life life next week,
[3673.16] Adam: so I won't be here.
[3674.24] Adam: So have fun.
[3675.84] NJ: Yes, enjoy that.
[3678.48] Tony: Well done, Adam.
[3679.88] Adam: Yeah, you made it.
[3681.36] Jae: Yeah, well, a couple weeks' time for a note out
[3684.12] Jae: and thanks to you, Tony, for coming along.
[3687.4] Tony: We've missed you.
[3688.24] Tony: No worries.
[3689.08] Tony: Fossilstuff.com, Revo 5, 4 and 6 are out now.
[3693.88] Jae: 70 to 75 pounds or something, isn't it?
[3696.6] Tony: Yeah, fossilstuff.com.
[3699.32] Jae: Yeah, just type fossilweevo and you'll find it.
[3701.2] Jae: I think that's how I find it.
