[228.4] Tony: and is the, sorry, race band and is the
[233.84] Tony: track the same every time so you can get used to it?
[236.64] Edd: The track doesn't change throughout the day, I don't know about a weekly basis,
[240.88] Edd: it looks exactly the same as the preview videos I saw
[244.16] Edd: on the Facebook group, which is good because there's a
[248.88] Edd: bit of familiarity going around it. So they put
[253.68] Edd: four pilots in a heat, spread across the race band, they do
[257.04] Edd: odds and evens, so one, three, you know, five and seven and
[261.6] Edd: the other numbers on the other heat and the more people join, because more
[265.76] Edd: people come during the day, they just add another heat in and they
[268.4] Edd: just rotate the heats as the day goes on and everyone gets a go.
[272.4] Edd: I've never been to an event and flown
[276.4] Edd: so many rounds before, it was just one after the other, it was
[280.16] Edd: non-stop and everyone was helping out with the organizing, so Chris wasn't
[284.72] Edd: constantly the one who was organizing the races, I think Adam jumped in and
[289.28] Edd: another chap I've not met before jumped in at some point as well, so
[292.88] Edd: yeah, really friendly bunch as well, everyone I met there was really sound,
[296.88] Edd: as is normal with FPV events as well, so yeah,
[300.08] Edd: really, really good, so go fly it, definitely go and check it out.
[304.72] Jack: You said the Sunday flying group, they're all arseholes.

[315.76] Jae: Poppin is it's one of those places that seem to have all the events popping up
[318.8] Jae: over winter, which a lot of other places, you know, it came up
[321.84] Jae: time and time again in the winter, dark winter months,
[324.64] Jae: which is always reassuring and you say even in this weather
[327.84] Jae: you get 20-25 people turning up and stuff or whatever,
[331.52] Edd: that's quite a good turnout in this. Yeah, I mean I really lucked out, I mean
[335.28] Edd: Saturday was a blue sky day, which is an absolute rarity
[340.64] Edd: of recent, it wasn't cold enough, it wasn't warm enough, sorry, for t-shirts
[345.84] Edd: by any stretch, everyone still wraps up really warm, but
[348.72] Edd: yeah, you definitely live outdoors. But it's an unknown,
[351.76] Jae: just still arranging an event with an unknown of what it potentially could be,
[355.52] Jae: you know, that's the people that are actually running the show.
[359.52] Jae: Yeah, really, very, very, very impressive.
[362.8] Jae: So how did you do, how did you turn out then? Well, you know,
[366.4] Edd: I'm no pro, I'm no expert, crashes were enjoyed, but everyone else was crashing
[370.88] Edd: as well. I flew my small four-inch Mitsuko,
[375.68] Edd: which is a little plus-size thing, and that was
[380.56] Edd: pretty easy to get around with, so after a couple times without, I thought well,
[384.0] Edd: I'll try the new Revo, which I'm not in supply, and I've got the six-inch, and
[389.52] Edd: that was, God, that was a blasphemy of fire, I've not flown
[394.64] Edd: anything that quick before, and it was made and on the track.
[399.92] Edd: I literally just hover-tested it, and I made the bloody thing on the track,
[403.44] Edd: and it's got really torquey motors, really punchy battery,
[408.56] Edd: yeah, just, it's just, I've never flown a machine like it, and
[412.72] Edd: I took off and just zoomed straight into the first gate, because it was just
[417.2] Edd: way quicker than I was expecting, so lesson learned very quickly,
[421.68] Edd: got the machine back into the tent and just started putting more
[425.52] Edd: expo on everything, just to calm it all down, and yeah, started getting some laps
[428.8] Edd: in after that, but yeah, it's first few rounds, all good, but
[433.76] Edd: I spent the rest of the day just learning how to tame this mental machine
[436.56] Edd: that Martin's given to me, it was crazy.
[440.72] Edd: It's actually, it was built with a kiss set up,
[447.84] Edd: because when I bought all the kiss components,
[451.76] Edd: and I don't know, when I got it back, because Dan built it for me,
[459.92] Edd: another fossil chat, I just thought, sorry, I'm going to put
[464.24] Edd: a beta fly on there, because I've been really getting used to beta fly recently,
[467.04] Edd: and I kind of know, I've got myself comfortable with it,
[470.88] Edd: yeah, beta fly on kiss now is completely legit, so anyone who's got a kiss board
[475.2] Edd: set around, because they don't want to fly a kiss anymore, just get beta fly on
[478.24] Edd: it, it works really, really well.

[517.2] Jae: quite a while, so what have been your steps to now start going to the
[521.52] Jae: Circuits and racing then, what was your progression from that point of Team Poop,
[525.52] Jae: which I think came last, sadly? I'm going to put this out here now, I'm
[529.36] Edd: still, there's no space for that, what I am doing is, I'm just going
[536.4] Edd: to any event that I can say, I promised myself this year, it's just
[541.28] Edd: to keep going, keep going, and it's the only
[544.4] Edd: way that I'm going to get better, is to go and fly people I don't know,
[549.12] Edd: go and fly courses that I've not helped set up,
[552.24] Edd: anything to basically unsteady the nerves, and just go and practice and
[555.76] Edd: practice and practice and practice, and that's it, and I've been
[559.92] Edd: hitting velocity drone a lot recently as well, and that's been a huge help,
[564.72] Edd: very impressive. Yeah, it's really good, it's all based
[568.4] Edd: around beta flight and virtual ESCs and virtual motors, and
[572.88] Edd: it's the third sim I've tried, and it's the closest
[578.24] Edd: to my quads that I've flown yet, so
[585.04] Edd: everyone's got their favorite, so this is completely subjective, it's
[589.52] Edd: how I feel about it, but it's been really helping that, my whole
[594.0] Edd: mentality of using beta flight now is because I've discovered so much about
[598.48] Edd: how to set rates and expo just through the sim, and
[601.84] Edd: it was quite telling when I started applying the rates that I got comfortable
[605.6] Edd: with in velocity drone onto my quads, and I
[609.36] Edd: started getting more accurate flying with my quads because of
[613.36] Edd: what I've done in the sim, so I found that really useful, so
[617.68] Edd: getting out my comfort zone and just practicing as much as possible,
[621.2] Edd: and I might be able to complete a few laps at the mini air show this
[624.08] Jae: year, who knows? I think what I found of velocity
[627.76] Jae: drone, because I'm quite a recent user of it, is at least you could get
[631.36] Jae: your quad roughly flying what you expect in the real world,
[633.84] Jae: real physics, in the simulator, but then
[637.52] Jae: tweak your rates and tweak your more your rates and how you want it to react
[640.56] Jae: around corners and things, and I found that very helpful.
[643.68] Jack: Where did your dude almost say d**k then?
[648.08] Jack: Well you just did, so there you go, yeah, but no, I think what I was saying
[654.64] Jae: about it, but it's good that there's a few other sims out there now as well, I mean,
[659.92] Jae: the DRL was rubbish for a while, the freeride had recharged, I like.
[664.96] Edd: Yeah, I think any novice pilot will
[669.68] Edd: understand what it is to go through a gate for the first time,
[673.44] Edd: and I think any sim will give you that
[677.84] Edd: sort of experience, because I mean it's not as if we're going through the gates
[680.72] Edd: for real when we've got goggles on, we're sending a camera through it, so
[684.48] Edd: that whole psychology of getting low to the ground and going through something,
[688.32] Edd: simulator really helps with that, regardless of what it is.

[744.4] Edd: You managed to get out at Ormond, I know the weather's been rubbish and you're
[747.04] Edd: Australian, so that counts against you. Yeah, but I was born in winter, in a dark
[752.8] Jae: cold winter, so I think I'm a little bit of pervious to my Celtic skin.
[756.56] Jae: I'm all right, but most people are too cold to go out,
[762.88] Jae: NJ doesn't like flying the cold, so this is very cold for him, but
[765.76] Jae: it's a few of those hardcore ones just going out, but we've been finding
[768.8] Jae: some new spots to hopefully fly and it's quite interesting how we came
[773.52] Jae: across one and how we approached the landowner, so
[778.32] Jae: there's a new spot we're going to try and fly this weekend, but it's an old
[781.28] Jae: golf course, it's just basically, you know, the
[785.28] Jae: trees are left, so a lot of the Ninja branches, low line branches and things,
[788.0] Jae: but there's runs down the trees and fairways
[790.8] Jae: and it's essentially natural gates that we can
[792.72] Jae: hopefully set up a few race courses with. So that's promising little venue for the
[797.12] Jae: future in our local area, but it was quite a standoffish approach,
[803.36] Jae: you know, as flyers we always like to fly new spots because we're
[806.72] Jae: four of the same spots, I think, so it's one of those things of
[810.24] Jae: how do people go out and approach other places to hopefully fly, because
[815.28] Jae: once you have the landowner's permission you're pretty much
[817.68] Jae: nine-tenths of where you've been completely legal to fly, so
[821.92] Jae: that's key. We were met when we were walking on this golf course with
[827.36] Jae: quite an abrupt person saying, you know, what you're doing,
[829.52] Jae: why did you not see the no trespassing signs
[832.56] Jae: and get off my land sort of attitude, but after a little bit of talking
[836.4] Jae: and then we, well I cheekily said, can we have a
[839.2] Jae: flight today, and he said yeah, and setting out for the,
[842.88] Jae: obviously because they don't know what to do with the land, but setting it up for
[845.12] Jae: hopefully some smaller events where it's just pay for that day per person
[848.0] Jae: per to fly, so it's quite promising.
[852.08] Jae: But one other, I mean, my boss does shooting for pigeons and things and one
[856.0] Jae: thing that they do is they go around to farms and
[858.0] Jae: take a bottle of wine, you know, a case of wine and offer wine and say do you
[861.36] Jae: have a problem, do you mind if we shoot, and I don't think it's the same mentality
[864.0] Jae: where you'd hope to shoot guns, but a similar approach could happen and I
[867.28] Jae: think a lot of people might actually find places to fly legally
[871.04] Edd: if they just did that approach. Can I just rewind that for a second? You're
[874.48] Edd: telling us that it's easier to turn up with some shotguns and a wine
[878.48] Edd: and get permission to use the land than it is with a model aircraft.
[883.52] Edd: Yes, because there's one reason pigeons eat
[890.0] Jae: seeds, don't they, in shoots, so pigeons, farmers don't like pigeons flying on to
[893.84] Jae: the land, they're quite happy if they're shot on there.

[1068.16] Edd: went for the true true D B3 instead. There's none left in the UK, is there? I

[1117.2] Jae: everything where I could have tested. A test or a fly is one of the same, isn't it?
[1122.64] Tony: Yeah, I know, but 25 milliwatt. Yeah, with one of them is not,
[1128.0] Tony: it doesn't get very well. Let's say you're testing range and stuff
[1132.08] Jae: then. I suppose if you're just testing a little bit you could probably get away with it.
[1135.36] Tony: We can but it's not great. What goggles have you got?
[1140.72] Tony: A V2. Okay. But just with the polarized antenna on 25 milliwatt.
[1148.32] Jae: There are a lot of people selling the version 1 because
[1151.44] Jae: the version 3 is out so you might get a pair of V1s.
[1155.6] Edd: I'll just wait for Phil to get the V3s. Yeah, I'll testify to Tony's frustration

[1252.22] Jack: Or it's like the fear of his screwdriver being stuck in it, wasn't it?
[1257.5] Jack: Some weird like subconscious thing with inside electronics.
[1263.34] Jack: But yeah, I don't know. I kind of got excited about the
[1268.38] Jack: the Forge system but everyone seems to be banging on about the
[1272.06] Jae: True D. I didn't like the Forge logo. That's my answer.

[1283.74] Jae: But somebody had the True D's and that's what was available. So I think they were
[1286.94] Edd: pretty much similar by a few points. Has anyone tried the
[1293.58] Edd: the Fat Shark? Sort of non-true diversity. The one that uses one receiver and
[1297.9] Edd: just switches between the two aerials. The V2.
[1302.62] Edd: Yeah, the V2's just come out, hasn't it? It was only like 30 quid or something
[1306.62] Edd: and I don't know. I was tempted for that but I don't know. Anyone tried it?
[1315.38] Jack: No, I haven't. I know that they released a V1 and then they had to release a V2
[1320.74] Jack: and then they were having problems with people selling the V1
[1325.06] Jack: with a photo of the V2 and stuff like that and all different kinds of
[1330.18] Jack: who are. So I don't know. I just wondered because
[1335.94] Jack: it seems like a lot of people are moving away from ground stations now.
[1340.18] Jack: I'm just curious.
[1344.74] Jack: I mean obviously it's much easier bringing just your goggles and that and I
[1348.82] Jack: do miss the good old days of that but
[1352.66] Jack: these diversity models seem to be very complicated now
[1358.02] Jack: and it's not something really I've looked into.
[1362.5] Tony: If I was going for a full day racing with my mates at Hidden Valley I would still
[1366.66] Tony: take my ground stations over the goggles. I just want the simplicity of being
[1371.46] Tony: able to grab my goggles if I want to just chuck my cord in the car
[1375.78] Tony: when I'm going to work and then stop and fly in a field or whatever.
[1379.7] Jae: That's what I want it for. Yeah it packs back then doesn't it?
[1384.42] Tony: Yeah just stick it in the bag and go rather than having to have a tripod and
[1389.38] Tony: wires and things like that but like I say if I was still doing a full
[1393.38] Tony: day's racing or mucking about with my planes and stuff
[1396.74] Tony: I'd still take the ground station. So you'd still be hearing me swear a lot.
[1404.34] Jack: I'll always remember like flying along to go you were there
[1412.34] Jack: and I think I know the time. Yeah trying to get around the truck three
[1417.3] Jack: times he'd done it twice and then all you heard
[1420.5] Jack: was this just barrage of constant swearing with no pause for
[1426.82] Jae: air. I don't know how you could actually yeah it was amazing.
[1430.58] Jae: And I remember trying I think in it so much you let so much out that day
[1434.1] Jae: didn't you? You had a good release that day too. It was fun. Maybe we need to take it down again.
