=== Let's Drone Out — Episode 77 === Title: Lets Drone Out Race Flight Recorded: 2017-02-16 Hosts: Jae "Chipko", Adam Juniper, Clinton "Ectraz" Roberts, Jack "Brightontillifly" Nash, Andrew "Frank" Hyams Guest(s): Preston (RaceFlight) Total audience: 1,358 Platforms: SoundCloud (http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/feeds.soundcloud.com/stream/345541908-letsdroneout-lets-drone-out-race-flight.mp3) ==================================== This week we chat to Preston about; Race flight. [0.02] Jae: Welcome to get another episode of let's show now this week [4.62] Jae: You are joined by the usual motley crew of Jack. He's in the background [8.9] Jack: Hello, Jack. Hello. I just like to go on records the way that we don't hate race flight [14.54] Jack: We just like mocking Tony cuz Tony's an idiot and Tony is incompetent and tries to use race flight [21.94] Jack: It doesn't work Tony can't even flash beat beat a flight [26.62] Jack: Is that why Tony is hiding this week? I don't know yet Tony is an embarrassment [32.62] Jack: To race light on the other hand skits. Oh makes it look good [37.74] Jack: Carry on [39.9] Clint: Skits so amazing [44.9] Jae: Yeah, indeed we are joined by Preston from a race flight also Adam Frank [50.02] Jae: Clinton on the background and myself Jay so welcome a Preston [54.72] Jae: Over from it. I mean, yeah, no, no, it's good to have you on [57.96] Jae: so yeah [58.98] Jae: generally we like to find a little bit out about people that come on as I guess because a lot of people start from [64.44] Jae: Many different backgrounds and things so we do like to get it out of the way of just finding out what your story is [69.2] Jae: Where you actually came from and how you got to where you are today, which is uh with us [74.48] Preston (RaceFlight): Well, um, you know, I've done internet technology for a while had some companies doing it and and I got into this drone flying [81.84] Preston (RaceFlight): And I think my regression was I think I started to run in then upgrade the clean flight [87.72] Preston (RaceFlight): They flew better [89.12] Preston (RaceFlight): Probably couldn't get any better up gave the beta flight if we better couldn't put it couldn't any better [92.88] Preston (RaceFlight): and then I came across this thing called race light because I had an f4 and that was when Kaylin was just first like [99.24] Preston (RaceFlight): he first did it and [101.04] Preston (RaceFlight): I saw there's a bunch of bugs in it and I had actually offered to help everyone else along the line like you run and clean [106.8] Preston (RaceFlight): plate race light [108.04] Preston (RaceFlight): And they kind of just brushed me inside or whatever. So he's like here's get how back to go fix [112.48] Preston (RaceFlight): And that's kind of how me and Kaylin met up originally and that's really when race light really got started [118.0] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean back then it was just pretty much he had a death for support to [122.16] Preston (RaceFlight): Beta flight, I think was the majority of it and some flight though changes and since then [126.8] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean I have a big history and development, you know, I've been programming for [132.02] Preston (RaceFlight): I don't know like 25 years or something like that [134.9] Preston (RaceFlight): Kaitlyn those flight code really well [136.94] Preston (RaceFlight): So it was kind of a combination where I could kind of show Kaitlyn [141.46] Preston (RaceFlight): This is the proper way kind of to do things you can see cuz he didn't have a lot of experience and see and he knew [146.38] Preston (RaceFlight): Flight code really well [147.1] Preston (RaceFlight): so he could be like, you know, this is how we should do the flight code cuz he did open pilot before and [151.06] Adam: Then as you can see, yeah, I have the skills to fix the bugs as well because I yeah problems with my Mac [156.9] Adam: But I guess they're not gonna just let me you know, come and help out [161.42] Adam: Something about it [162.74] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I mean it was kind of a good combination [164.42] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean we have the same mindset like, you know [166.74] Preston (RaceFlight): What I came along and I'm like, you know, why are we doing things this way? [170.34] Preston (RaceFlight): It should be done like this and it's like I've been saying that forever and no one wants to listen to me again [174.06] Preston (RaceFlight): And he was kind of like he's like he was about pushing the boundaries, you know pushing it as fast as you can go [178.94] Preston (RaceFlight): Cuz if it's as fast as you can go, you know, it can't be worse to be faster. Nothing's ever worse less faster [185.78] Preston (RaceFlight): And we found out when we made it faster and when we did things properly and where we used the hardware properly [192.5] Preston (RaceFlight): It flew better. I mean, that's the bottom line is when you do things, right? It's better [196.74] Preston (RaceFlight): and I guess everyone kind of argues what the what the right way is and [201.7] Preston (RaceFlight): We try to do it the way the manufacturers of the chips has to do things [205.54] Jae: Yeah, I mean that they're very capable chips that are on these boards nowadays [209.42] Jae: So and often I think the way it's progressed is taken software engineers to take a little bit of the hardware model together [216.38] Jae: I mean the original Dominic Clifton days to fix it to take it to the next level and [220.66] Jae: It only got us so far from the 8-bit to you know to carry out to where we are today [224.66] Jae: But it's good to see that chips are finally starting to be utilized to the the degree that they're capable of [230.94] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, and and you know originally we thought we're gonna do an F7. We thought that'd be a first [236.62] Preston (RaceFlight): Board we released and we realized when we redid everything it got way more efficient [241.54] Preston (RaceFlight): So we don't even need an F7 right now [243.54] Preston (RaceFlight): An F7 we will need at some point when we start doing really crazy stuff and we have one in that kind of plan [250.02] Preston (RaceFlight): But right now why waste your money on F7? [253.18] Preston (RaceFlight): When you don't need one, I mean, we're running at like 25% CPU doing crazy stuff [257.74] Preston (RaceFlight): You know 32 kilohertz full LEDs changing non-stop. I mean everything we can possibly imagine logging all that stuff [265.02] Preston (RaceFlight): We're not even at 30% CPU [266.86] Preston (RaceFlight): So it's not needed anything better than F4 [269.9] Preston (RaceFlight): But but I mean we did everything the way we thought it should be done, and I think that makes it work better [275.06] Jae: You know [276.26] Jae: You see back in the multi-way days they they did the actual chips themselves the atmals [280.82] Jae: Yeah, they wouldn't actually they got to the point where no we can't fill it [283.86] Jae: But then with extra modules like navigation of things which is you know a bulk of a extra coat on top [289.58] Jae: They ran out of space ultimately and that they had to progress so I just say how long do you think it'll be before it's [295.78] Jae: Fully utilized to a degree way, you know, you'd have to move up [299.6] Preston (RaceFlight): well, I think we were actually going to be adding in some GPS things and stuff like that and [305.22] Preston (RaceFlight): We're adding a lot more sensors to these [307.58] Preston (RaceFlight): so when we get to the point where we can use I mean like right now on your gyro you have, you know, [311.9] Preston (RaceFlight): your accelerometer and you had your gyro and [314.62] Preston (RaceFlight): Pretty much no one uses the accelerometer, you know when you most people even get a flight [318.42] Preston (RaceFlight): They don't use the accelerometer because they think it's just for level mode for example [323.02] Preston (RaceFlight): but that data is something that can be used to make your quad flight even better and [327.02] Preston (RaceFlight): The same thing. So even if you're doing just pure acro that can still be utilized and used [332.42] Preston (RaceFlight): So as we add in more sensors, it makes acro fly better, but we can add even more level modes and [339.1] Preston (RaceFlight): More safety modes and make your quad do more crazy things and as we add more and more of that stuff [344.74] Preston (RaceFlight): Then we're gonna be going more towards [347.74] Preston (RaceFlight): You know the f7 where we need more CPU power or whatever. But right now, I mean to be honest, it's not really needed [354.62] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean, I don't know if you guys could slow and race like one [356.72] Clint: We just did a beta release our first beta public beta. Yes last night race flight is incredible. Like I'm [363.1] Clint: absolutely gobsmacked by it [365.06] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I mean it just was amazing [367.9] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I mean it feels like you're a sail into the air like you're a ghost or something, you know, it does what you say [374.26] Preston (RaceFlight): And and and you know, I think we can get even better [377.3] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean, well one thing I've learned in this hobby is every time I thought like it can't get any better [382.42] Preston (RaceFlight): I find something and it got better and you don't realize that it could have gone better till you felt the thing was better and [389.62] Preston (RaceFlight): I think that's why we're having issues with the whole, you know people still using that one. So yeah, I can't fly any better [395.78] Preston (RaceFlight): But they don't realize it can't because they've never seen what it could do [400.3] Jae: Yeah, no, it's true. I should I mean that's a progression sometimes throughout them [404.14] Jae: I mean I moved from you know [406.5] Jae: Just some clean flights and a kiss for a little while and actually it was a completely new kettle of fish for how I was [412.02] Jae: Flying and I fell in love with it for a while [414.18] Jae: And you know, it's just the different things that go along that it I [418.82] Jae: Felt a better pilot once I was flying on a different flight controller from what I was used to before [422.78] Jae: I've had a go on Clinton's race flight and I loved it [426.14] Jae: I mean he built it well at everything like that his machine but Clinton's our resident expert on this [431.9] Clint: Race, I did I did have issues though [433.94] Clint: And I think it's a lot of them it's annoying because you see so many people [438.06] Clint: Sort of you know saying bad things about race flight [440.7] Clint: But it all comes down to the fact that they're just not mounting them correctly [444.38] Clint: And it's really irritating some of that some of the stuff you see and you just like well go back do it again [449.78] Clint: Make it right and it will fly perfectly. I mean, I've got two of them running race flight and and both times straight out of the box [456.9] Clint: Completely default no settings changed and they just fly incredibly [461.3] Preston (RaceFlight): Absolutely. Incredibly. Yeah, I think we've you know, we kind of try and listen to that, you know [465.94] Preston (RaceFlight): Um, you know people were like why do you come out the version 2 so quick? [469.34] Preston (RaceFlight): You just did the version 1 well because we listen to people and you realize say we can put these gummies on it [474.7] Preston (RaceFlight): You know I came up with this gummy idea to make it way easier to mount so you don't have to worry about [478.86] Preston (RaceFlight): You know rings and all that stuff and I put some more filtering on it to kind of make up for some bad [483.54] Preston (RaceFlight): PDB and truth be told they should all fly the same [486.26] Preston (RaceFlight): But it's just less likely to cause someone problems on them. There's the new version of the old version [491.82] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean, I didn't replace any of my old version today. I thought it makes no difference to me [495.82] Preston (RaceFlight): I I mounted it right [497.62] Preston (RaceFlight): but we're just trying to make it easier for people to get a good experience with race light right away and not get frustrated and [504.82] Preston (RaceFlight): Software release last night was all about that too [507.02] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean there is so easy now [509.3] Preston (RaceFlight): There is no way that it's way easier to set up race light one now than any other flight control software [514.86] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean basically you run three four Wizards you click four buttons [518.38] Preston (RaceFlight): You do you twiddle the sticks do a few things and you're all set up perfect out of the box. It should [524.94] Clint: That is completely true actually, but it almost makes it too easy. It doesn't feel like a hobby anymore. You've made it too easy [531.94] Jae: It's called more accessible because actually what it highlighted when people don't build these things that have problems is [537.18] Jae: People that can't build these things to fly and what it does is it makes more accessible to the people that don't have really built [542.62] Jae: These things and isolate you know from vibration for all sorts of reasons can actually start building it and using the the boards again [549.86] Jae: so yeah, yeah [551.86] Adam: It can be a hobby for people who fly as well as just people who you know through the world computers [556.62] Adam: I think they you're gonna split split people. I think there'll always be some who don't want to share [562.58] Preston (RaceFlight): Well you can always you know whatever you can you can be more advanced you can go in the console and play with the things if you [568.34] Preston (RaceFlight): Want them if you're that type of guy wants to twiddle it that you still can but most people I don't think want to they just [574.02] Preston (RaceFlight): Want to get out there and go fly and they don't want to like bang their head against the wall for you know eight hours [578.54] Preston (RaceFlight): Straight over something stupid, and it's gonna get easier and easier [581.14] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean we have things going in there that are just gonna take it to the whole next level with easiness and [586.74] Preston (RaceFlight): Then you'll get better and better as time goes on but the goal is to get you like it like you [591.7] Preston (RaceFlight): Make it more accessible like so many people go by a quad never get a flying right and then just don't do the hobby [596.82] Preston (RaceFlight): And if there's less people in the hobby [599.22] Preston (RaceFlight): There's less you know innovation is less cool things coming out [602.34] Preston (RaceFlight): There's less people to do it with it's less people at races and I want to see less [606.28] Preston (RaceFlight): You know you go to these races, and they're always the same people at every rate [609.66] Preston (RaceFlight): I like Sebring the last race who went to because it was more accessible to more people [614.22] Preston (RaceFlight): There are more new faces there, but that's what I want to see. It's a shame. It's just the same people at every single race [623.02] Jae: Do you not see the the general hobby and not necessarily just outside of racing, but it's it's still constantly growing I mean [630.06] Jae: It's a I'm amazed at how still many more people are asking me [634.5] Jae: You know how do I get into that I want one of those what you know it's it's it's it's weird [638.58] Jae: They're neither ones that can't really build so when having a clue about any of the technology [642.66] Jae: That's the accessibility part [644.66] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, yeah, and I think you know I mean if you if you look at everything we do [648.74] Preston (RaceFlight): It's kind of aimed to make it easier like you know the pads for the ESCs are right in the corner where the ESCs look up [654.54] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean you can start them from the top like solder pads the falters getting easier [658.22] Preston (RaceFlight): We're trying to make it easier, but the most advanced at the same time, and that's top [662.22] Preston (RaceFlight): You know like our gyro by far the most advanced gyro in the market regardless of what everyone says [667.46] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean the manufacturer says that that's not me saying that that's what the manufacturer said [671.42] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, so um, but it's more difficult like you said you have to isolate it [677.58] Preston (RaceFlight): To make work in your quad because it's the more advanced gyro [680.72] Preston (RaceFlight): And I think we figure that out with the gummy. I mean really no one has any issues that I know with the gummy [686.38] Preston (RaceFlight): You know it does a good job of that, but yeah, I mean that's what we're hoping to do [689.78] Preston (RaceFlight): We're hoping to to make it better for everyone [693.18] Preston (RaceFlight): So everyone can do it. I mean eventually you hopefully make it so easy [695.9] Preston (RaceFlight): You know your grandmother can pick up a clock and do it, but still so advanced that Shawn Taylor can you know? [701.22] Preston (RaceFlight): You know blow past everyone in the race [704.22] Adam: No, that's when it's gone to [708.62] Adam: Not my gran [712.1] Clint: Anything dude it might be coming out in race flight or anything you might be adding to improve it anymore [716.98] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I mean have you there's a lot of stuff coming out with the bracelet one [720.82] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean we're adding in now all the features [722.8] Preston (RaceFlight): So you're gonna have all your LSEs working your smart audio on the DPX's [727.86] Preston (RaceFlight): All that stuff in the next couple weeks. You should see you know all being supported now that we have solid like code [734.78] Preston (RaceFlight): Now it's time to add the features, so you know all the stuff people are afraid of missing [739.38] Preston (RaceFlight): Are there I mean we've added in a few features you know with yesterday's release where? [743.62] Preston (RaceFlight): Your terrain is telemetry works respect them telemetry works all that stuff. I don't know if you guys saw the videos [749.18] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it's where basically got the idea from but we've had the configurator in the spectrum remote [754.66] Preston (RaceFlight): Well, we're gonna add in all that stuff [756.82] Preston (RaceFlight): Wow [757.82] Preston (RaceFlight): We got some more cool stuff coming too. We have iPhone app coming out [762.18] Preston (RaceFlight): work feel Bluetooth [764.54] Preston (RaceFlight): And I don't know if you guys seen our foreign one ESC that you just push it in them soldering [769.1] Preston (RaceFlight): the flight controller [770.62] Jae: Hey, maybe Adam will get to feel for these things [778.98] Jae: Sometimes after DIY it you have to do it yourself [782.42] Jae: Yeah [783.78] Adam: Adam Adam Adam has to [785.78] Adam: Make a plan and get out of the house and get down to the hack space because I know where he's on it [790.22] Jae: Yeah, okay, okay, but anyone is this thing is organizing anything to do with the mini air show [794.3] Jae: Maybe we get Adam doing a build day there now that would be brilliant [806.94] Adam: The last the last time I built [810.46] Adam: This you know, it was hex and stuff it was monstrous [817.78] Adam: The idea of that little sold I'll burn my hands [822.18] Preston (RaceFlight): So I mean I hope I think the biggest problem I see of people is bothering [827.42] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, yeah, yeah, and and we're on our way to making it so people have options [832.9] Adam: We don't want to I mean my grad my grand just to go back to something you're saying [836.18] Adam: I don't think I've seen her soldering to be honest. Yeah [840.46] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing now is there's so many people that [844.5] Preston (RaceFlight): Just don't know how to solder properly [846.66] Preston (RaceFlight): Like, you know, we've seen lots of boards where people like go to saw and they heat it up so much [850.34] Preston (RaceFlight): They knock another component off the board or they just you know [853.94] Preston (RaceFlight): Fry the pad off the board or things like that and and personally if I didn't have to solder I wouldn't solder [859.06] Preston (RaceFlight): But right now there's no choice, you know, there's there's nothing out there that makes it so easy unless you want to use the crappy quads [865.66] Preston (RaceFlight): you know the rate of fly ones or whatever, but [869.54] Preston (RaceFlight): I hope they make it easy for everyone. I mean the racers want it more than anyone [874.3] Preston (RaceFlight): For racing like ready to fly a decent one. I think if it's built in such a way where [882.5] Preston (RaceFlight): It performs the same and you can use other parts on it. Yeah [887.14] Preston (RaceFlight): But I think these guys like they try and force to use their own parts and you know, you're a racer [892.1] Preston (RaceFlight): You're trying to make this back as possible. So if you're limited to what you can do [895.66] Preston (RaceFlight): Then why would you buy it? You know and even through the choice of radio? [899.34] Jae: You've got such a broad spectrum of different radios [902.3] Jae: I bet you'd never get it just ready to fly unless you've bundled it with a rich transmitter and who wants that wouldn't it? [908.14] Jack: the market for um, you know like the ready to build ready built because of [915.14] Jack: the vortex, I mean [917.5] Jack: Immersion just released the the vortex 180 and stuff [921.22] Jack: But like like Preston said it is locked in to their parts and their components [927.54] Jack: You know everything's on one board all that crazy stuff. There's different versions depending on where you buy it. So [935.82] Preston (RaceFlight): And people like options too. I mean, they don't want the quad to look the same. I mean look at people's cars [940.58] Preston (RaceFlight): No, no one's cars with the thing. It's actually the hobbyist where they work on their own cars [944.7] Preston (RaceFlight): They want to customize it make it look good, you know [947.18] Adam: So that I was just thinking that 99% of cars look like it's identical [953.38] Adam: So you have we sometimes they're not in black [956.82] Jae: 99.9% of all DJI products look identical [963.62] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I think these guys people are buying it just because it works, you know [966.88] Adam: I mean if they could like make it plain if the point of it is the camera [971.1] Adam: Yeah, for sure. I'm gonna really want to be thinking about well, I [975.06] Jae: I [976.34] Jae: Mean obviously that there's a flight video of the new DJI racing drone up this week [981.86] Jae: So it's quite interesting that they finally I mean, they've had their ESEs and things out for a while, but I [987.5] Jae: Suppose they've made some mainstream [989.94] Jae: variety [991.78] Jae: So, I mean I've always liked the fact that there's the development behind the boards defined [995.86] Jae: You know behind the components and it's always good when you get different, you know [998.74] Jae: People working on different ways and pushing it all forward like you said earlier pushing the envelope [1003.02] Jae: So as you develop them further for your race fight [1005.98] Jae: Are you gonna look for more sensors as you said or you're gonna look to improve on up to 64,000, you know [1011.02] Jae: Or what what do you see is that the the immediate roadmap for this? [1014.98] Preston (RaceFlight): Well for in terms of the hardware or the software. I suppose it's more the software now really, isn't it? [1020.54] Jae: I mean, do you look because presumably it's a software driven sensitive modules if you're gonna hook them up or it's a software tuning of the [1028.64] Preston (RaceFlight): The flight controller for I think with the software [1031.48] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean our biggest roadmap is just to make as much stuff work now as possible [1036.24] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, I think the next thing we're gonna do is make race like one working with the f3 because there's so many f3s out [1041.88] Preston (RaceFlight): There just kind of give people a case of what it is. And then maybe they're like, well, yeah, this slide is better [1046.96] Preston (RaceFlight): If there's even a better board I can buy and work better than maybe they'll buy our board [1051.76] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, so stuff like that. We have an OSD DTX coming out that's back on our board [1057.08] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean kind of a goal is to make a modular system that works well with our software too [1062.0] Preston (RaceFlight): Cuz I even the most advanced racers like they don't want to mess with building all this stuff [1066.12] Preston (RaceFlight): Like if something blows up, they just want to pull it off put another one on and go with it [1070.88] Preston (RaceFlight): And that's why I don't like to all in one thing, you know, you're on one [1073.8] Preston (RaceFlight): If it messes up you throw the whole thing in the garbage, you know [1076.64] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it it needs to be somewhat modular and things work better when they're modular, you know, the gyro gets cleaner readings and [1083.44] Preston (RaceFlight): What's one thing breaks? You're not throwing away a whole thing [1087.8] Preston (RaceFlight): I don't know. I think that's where the market's going. I mean we have pretty strong sales. So hopefully we kind of know what we're doing [1095.96] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, it can't keep stuff on the shelf right now, which is a good and a bad problem to have [1100.6] Preston (RaceFlight): and also [1102.08] Jae: Shrinking it down as in the this, you know the smaller version [1105.96] Jae: I mean you're gonna have that exactly the same. It's the same [1109.56] Jae: feature set as the [1111.4] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, we have the millibolt. I don't know if you saw I mean a little mini [1114.52] Preston (RaceFlight): You see this 20 millimeters by 20 millimeters [1118.12] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, it's that's two for your small cuz I think small is gonna be I think you're gonna have two segments [1123.56] Preston (RaceFlight): You're gonna have like your five in your six inch market, you know [1126.24] Preston (RaceFlight): Which is what everyone's fine right now and then you're gonna have more like the three inch market [1130.24] Preston (RaceFlight): Maybe a four inch will probably mostly three inch because if you can get the same performance and close the same speed on three inch [1135.44] Preston (RaceFlight): Then you're like, you know you guys during the winter [1137.28] Preston (RaceFlight): We don't have this problem with funny outside all the time here [1140.12] Preston (RaceFlight): But you could be indoors and have some pretty fast races and you know, you can still fight outside it like as well [1148.32] Adam: Yeah, now we don't do anything for four months [1150.8] Jae: I mean the micro brushless sized is really starting to take off part-in-part [1155.0] Jae: I mean there are a lot more models appearing on you know, besides advertising that three inch [1160.08] Jae: Prop size and they're still running for sale, you know batteries with quite some power with a little bit of momentum [1165.52] Jae: So I'm still fascinated by these smaller micro ones for smaller area flying [1169.8] Jae: and [1170.72] Jae: More flying essentially where I couldn't mess we put up my bigger birds. So yeah [1175.28] Adam: Time to talk about it. You actually sound excited, which is really I am I'm very excited [1183.2] Adam: Although now I need to buy the the whole DJI snail system just to know you lot [1188.12] Preston (RaceFlight): well, if you want lower you see when you go for it, you know, I [1193.24] Preston (RaceFlight): Think that like the fourth one shot [1194.84] Preston (RaceFlight): So it's kind of like I don't know [1196.58] Preston (RaceFlight): I don't think these big companies kind of know what's going on in the market like and I think they do get the initial people [1201.7] Preston (RaceFlight): buying stuff [1202.7] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, they're like, oh [1204.98] Preston (RaceFlight): I'm gonna try it out and then people put on the quad right? [1208.18] Adam: You know and they get shipping 15 to 20. I don't really understand why they're doing it at all to be honest [1213.66] Adam: I guess because they're worried the the TV show will take off and they need to have their branding on it [1219.78] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I think they're just don't know what this market's gonna do. They can keep growing. They want to be part of it [1225.2] Preston (RaceFlight): What's we're I think what's good about this market is that it's harder for these bigger companies to maybe break into because they don't know [1231.6] Preston (RaceFlight): What's going on? I think it's what this market's moving so fast, you know, I mean think about where we were three months ago [1236.16] Adam: It's not just speed. It's like the economics of it insane from their point of view [1239.84] Adam: You think of the margins on a phantom which is going to be costing them [1244.32] Adam: Probably no more than three more three hundred pounds to make and they're charging a thousand five hundred though sort of money [1251.84] Adam: Yeah, I think the software [1254.6] Preston (RaceFlight): I think that's that's kind of what we're doing too because the problem is, you know, there's no one funding [1261.68] Preston (RaceFlight): Development in any of this stuff. There's no one funding and even more importantly support [1266.2] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, that's why we came out there bored because we have programmers that are full-time that we're paying [1270.44] Preston (RaceFlight): We have support people that are full-time. We're paying that money has to come from somewhere [1274.92] Adam: You know, we're not getting rich off this stuff at all. Oh, I assumed you found a pile in your garden or something [1280.6] Adam: I have a money tree in the backyard, but but yeah [1284.16] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean and it's great because that's I think we're we're well known for our support than anything [1289.2] Preston (RaceFlight): You know there you can talk to us directly the developers [1292.0] Preston (RaceFlight): But we have people for you and we have an amazing community that all works and helps with each other as well [1297.48] Preston (RaceFlight): But it's kind of nice to see rather than someone like banggood who makes two dollars on something and keeps it [1305.2] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, we're selling stuff and it's going back to the people working on it, you know to make it better [1310.8] Preston (RaceFlight): And I hope people will support more stuff like that things than a cloner [1314.92] Preston (RaceFlight): Who just when someone builds their own board and then someone comes on coffee that charges less makes two dollars? [1323.08] Adam: Because if you can persuade the sort of you know people when they buy coffee to spend extra money [1327.88] Adam: That so the people who pick the beans have a slightly less miserable experience [1331.88] Adam: Then it should be the same for you know, everything else as well. Well, yeah, and if you any God [1338.64] Jae: I don't know. I was just I was just gonna say actually it's amazing. It's amazing for how many people say [1342.44] Jae: I'm just messaging Preston find out this one race white. I'm just yeah, I'm just head back from [1346.64] Jae: so actually you do on a grassroots level of support around there, but [1351.64] Jae: I mean [1353.08] Jae: Well Clinton you've you've had I was just about to say [1357.04] Clint: The one thing I will say about race flight is their support is [1361.12] Clint: Absolutely on board if you message either in their slack or on the Facebook or just message them directly [1366.24] Clint: Every single time within five ten minutes. You'll get a response [1369.48] Clint: I think I've had a few people actually remote into my desktop and actually go through all the [1375.32] Clint: Software my race flight and set it all up for me set the pits and everything. It's just incredible [1379.52] Preston (RaceFlight): Go through all your personal files [1387.52] Preston (RaceFlight): But but yeah, I mean that's what it is it's grassroots [1389.88] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean like you said like we're trying to help out everyone and hopefully we know we help out one guy [1394.88] Preston (RaceFlight): He helped with the next guy. He helped the next guy and it kind of spreads [1398.32] Preston (RaceFlight): But we don't want someone to not get flying and you know that they're going to get everyone flying because once they get flying [1403.4] Preston (RaceFlight): They pretty much don't want to fly anything else [1408.56] Jae: Have you got any ideas of starting a wiki or anything and or [1412.32] Jae: Frequently asked questions just to I mean is yeah, we have a new website coming up [1417.0] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean, you know it's hard to make time for everything [1418.8] Preston (RaceFlight): So you know stuff I think the biggest thing is right now stuff changes so quick [1423.52] Preston (RaceFlight): That anything we put up [1425.8] Preston (RaceFlight): Constantly have would have to be changed so it's easier for us to just yeah have a slack where we can tell everyone [1431.16] Preston (RaceFlight): Okay, now. This is change now. This is change and [1434.72] Preston (RaceFlight): But as we get we're getting to the point where we're more stable now [1437.44] Preston (RaceFlight): You know we we've got everything working well, so now we can spend more time on this [1441.48] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean there is a manual for a flight one. I don't know if you guys have seen it [1445.2] Preston (RaceFlight): That that someone named Destro on our slack what's on it? [1448.92] Preston (RaceFlight): And it tells you step-by-step with screenshots how to install it and all that stuff and tries to make it easy [1454.2] Preston (RaceFlight): And you know we released a new version last night. He's already updated the manual this morning [1458.24] Preston (RaceFlight): So there's a manual right now, and it'll just get better and better [1460.88] Preston (RaceFlight): But I think our goal is really to get all the documentation in the configurator [1465.4] Preston (RaceFlight): So you know you click on a little mark and see what it does or look at little videos [1469.8] Preston (RaceFlight): And figure I mean that's the goal right because everyone's gonna have to have this configurator installed [1474.2] Preston (RaceFlight): And once they do you know all the information is at the fingertips [1477.96] Preston (RaceFlight): So that that's kind of where we're going I [1480.24] Jae: Suppose it depends on which way around you look at it whether you look to look at documentation before you build or you've built it [1487.76] Jae: Yeah, I won't know what you think [1489.76] Jae: Sometimes you need to work out what connectors where you could putting stuff voltage is whatever, but I think I mean, but we do [1496.84] Preston (RaceFlight): We do have that stuff online. I mean you go to our rebuild FC that kind of figure online [1501.52] Preston (RaceFlight): I'm just you might you know less [1504.08] Jae: You might get less Facebook messages saying what do I do with this? It's a general guy [1508.32] Jae: Idiots, yeah, have you built your club properly yes, no no [1513.68] Preston (RaceFlight): We're moving there, I mean yeah, you know we can't ever overnight have everything you know [1520.12] Preston (RaceFlight): Thousands of people helping and and to be honest [1523.28] Preston (RaceFlight): I think all their stuff is disjointed and disconnected and it's kind of difficult to find what you want [1528.16] Preston (RaceFlight): Even though there's a lot of it [1529.5] Preston (RaceFlight): Maybe that makes people feel better, but when I was doing it [1532.2] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean I could never find out anything [1533.48] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean I would have killed for a slack like we have when I started out [1537.0] Preston (RaceFlight): Somewhere I could go and ask questions and Dominic has something similar with IRC [1541.12] Jae: But my first one was trawling through RC groups for the KK board and multi-copter days [1551.72] Jae: One little thing and it is [1555.96] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, and you find it and then that doesn't even work anymore [1559.04] Preston (RaceFlight): You know like you know I couldn't even figure out how to flash open pilot when I first started like it was crazy [1563.92] Preston (RaceFlight): I couldn't even find anything how to install it and and you know I don't know it sometimes [1568.48] Preston (RaceFlight): You just need your handheld. You know no matter how much documentation you read [1572.64] Preston (RaceFlight): You're not gonna figure it out [1574.16] Preston (RaceFlight): It's so much nicer to go like our splash where there's thousands of people and be like hey [1578.6] Preston (RaceFlight): I can't figure this out and you know some guy figured it out and felt the same as you was there and be like [1583.24] Preston (RaceFlight): Oh, you just gotta do this oh [1585.32] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean I think with the Wizards and stuff [1587.68] Preston (RaceFlight): We're gonna get away from the documentation too because it does it for you [1591.52] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean our goal is really if you can't you know get up and flying easily [1595.32] Preston (RaceFlight): then we did our job wrong like you shouldn't need to go in there and twiddle all these knobs and click all these switches and [1601.72] Preston (RaceFlight): type in all these numbers and minimum throttles [1607.24] Preston (RaceFlight): All this crazy stuff there is no point in any of that like it's built for an engineer [1613.16] Preston (RaceFlight): by an engineer is what it feels like you know it's not very pleasing and [1618.24] Preston (RaceFlight): People are used to it, but you know that that's why it's still done that way [1623.0] Preston (RaceFlight): I think they just got used to it, but for new people it seems like it's crazy [1625.92] Jae: You know I I think FPV still a bit of a subculture and mess around the world [1631.0] Jae: We don't want too many people joining this world. You gotta be careful [1636.8] Jae: I'm thinking the plan maybe we need to have more foresight on this [1642.52] Adam: Yeah, yeah, don't worry. I actually I actually think you know it's FPV [1648.04] Adam: There's a settle people are still joining, but it is more settled [1651.2] Adam: And if you go into like in the shops like mankind and stuff drones are not [1659.12] Adam: The symbols ones out you know the ready-to-fly things are sort of backing off [1663.64] Adam: And I think that it'll be less aggressive. I don't think you need to worry about being attacked from all sides [1669.48] Adam: By noobs and what have you I think now we just need to fix me [1674.68] Preston (RaceFlight): Well, let's put this way you guys you guys especially have all these crazy FPV laws being passed in Europe, right? [1680.8] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean the more people are in it the more people are gonna be like yeah [1684.16] Preston (RaceFlight): No, that's a stupid law you know so I think that's why it's important to get more people in it [1688.88] Adam: Very good point very good point. I'm pretty sure that we are allowed to fly FPV. I'm not at all sure you guys are [1696.08] Adam: Well [1698.24] Preston (RaceFlight): We're definitely allowed, but I think a lot of I don't know I'm hearing about some crazy stuff in Europe. Oh, I don't know [1706.24] Jae: How is each country there? I mean does it fall under state law in the US or is it FAA and [1714.48] Preston (RaceFlight): And I think technically FAA made a law that says no one else can make a law about it [1719.4] Preston (RaceFlight): So basically it's like we're the only ones you have to listen to you don't need to listen to anyone else [1724.32] Jae: I think it's pretty much this wasn't it, California saying that it was banned or was one state that said it was banned, but [1730.76] Jae: I'd I'd that's what I thought of FP or they were banning FPV fights for some [1734.92] Preston (RaceFlight): I don't think it was a state. I think maybe the individual cities. Maybe did well [1741.96] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, they came out that no we're the only ones that can make laws about this [1745.4] Preston (RaceFlight): You know and and that's how they kind of helped that way and I don't think it's really super explicit [1751.2] Preston (RaceFlight): like this is what you're allowed to do, but [1753.8] Preston (RaceFlight): The way our US our law system works is based on what the courts decide, right? [1757.84] Preston (RaceFlight): So if it if there's nothing it's explicitly said something you have to go to court and once they've made a case law [1763.72] Preston (RaceFlight): And that's what matters [1765.32] Adam: And so you stole you stole that system from us in fairness. I [1772.28] Preston (RaceFlight): Think we're kind of you know, it's like saying my brother stole my dad from me, you know [1779.48] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean [1784.16] Preston (RaceFlight): But but yeah, I mean that but I know that's not the way it works in all European countries and that's the [1790.28] Preston (RaceFlight): So, I think that's why we have no issues [1792.24] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean, yeah, someone goes important someone decides it's illegal to fly with goggles on then we might be in trouble, but [1799.2] Preston (RaceFlight): They'd have to twist and contort the laws to get them to that point [1801.96] Preston (RaceFlight): I know I don't know it's pretty good here, especially in Arizona. Like I have zero issues in Arizona [1805.92] Adam: I've never been told lost base in Arizona. Yeah [1809.96] Preston (RaceFlight): Well, we our cities embrace it. We have drone parks with designated drone areas in all our parks. Really? [1816.72] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, they're FAA and AMA, you know field and yeah, they support it really well here [1822.64] Preston (RaceFlight): It's crazy how nice it is here [1824.24] Preston (RaceFlight): Like, you know [1825.0] Preston (RaceFlight): we just had a race the other day and we didn't worry about anything we just show up with a bunch of people for a [1828.88] Preston (RaceFlight): Gates out in the AMA field in the Phoenix Park and I would go flying and I know Glendale is trying to open up stuff in [1834.76] Preston (RaceFlight): Our city here and gather are really good about it [1837.96] Preston (RaceFlight): We have the perfect weather and they're embracing and I know like space like Texas people may have a major issue [1844.16] Adam: You know, we have keep pantomime everywhere. We don't really have space in London [1849.72] Jae: And we have perfect weather weather for three-inch props in [1853.64] Jae: I [1858.72] Adam: Live I live very near where the 2012 Olympics were and I keep meaning to go and petition to read to change the use of the [1867.88] Adam: Belladrome, I think that would be awesome, wouldn't it? [1873.52] Adam: Going round around though in a Belladrome. No, you could put some stuff in it. There's you know, it's a funny shape building [1880.0] Adam: It's just a good big size [1882.52] Adam: Yeah, I think did you say also they've also got an outdoor track with Benson [1890.72] Jae: Maybe for you by maybe for you inspire Adam [1895.36] Adam: I'm not facing the inspire [1901.44] Clint: The race flight controller [1904.04] Jae: Yeah, yeah, in fact, you should do that just as a an upgrade to this phantom video, you know [1912.0] Preston (RaceFlight): Crashes you can pump a video race like killed your phantom and then you know, you'll get 20,000 views. Yeah [1919.36] Adam: That has no purpose I [1923.04] Clint: Did have I did have one one important very important question I had to ask about race flight is [1928.76] Clint: When you're flashing your earsees and it says have you taken your props off lads? Does that have anything to do with Tom Smith? [1942.0] Preston (RaceFlight): Humor in what we do because otherwise like pretty boring, right? [1948.12] Clint: There's quite a few cracks in there [1955.32] Jae: What we need in flight controllers now is Easter eggs so flip it left and right and up and down and does something crazy [1965.28] Preston (RaceFlight): What's funny is our flight control our new version to have an Easter egg on it and someone just realized it [1970.36] Preston (RaceFlight): If you if you the CPU underneath it has like to get those little guy under it [1974.28] Preston (RaceFlight): Some guy had pulled a CPU off his like it's always like wow [1977.76] Jae: Wow [1990.44] Preston (RaceFlight): But yeah, I mean, you know, why take yourself so seriously and and I think we made a little friction [1996.2] Preston (RaceFlight): From some people who get upset, you know [1998.2] Preston (RaceFlight): if we if we you know call things like witchcraft because it you know, it feels like witchcraft, but [2004.24] Preston (RaceFlight): You don't you don't have [2007.04] Jae: I think I prefer the term [2013.06] Jae: Magic, you know witchcraft as pure effing magic [2017.86] Jae: I [2020.62] Preston (RaceFlight): Mean [2024.1] Preston (RaceFlight): You know so far we just want to make cool stuff applies better everyone else, you know, ultimately we make the best decisions [2031.18] Preston (RaceFlight): We think and so far it's worked out [2033.78] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I'll put the majority but [2036.42] Frank: Yeah, I love you guys [2039.58] Frank: If you got time for it sure so [2046.56] Frank: Is [2049.36] Frank: The F your f3 is still capable flight controllers or should I concentrate I [2058.16] Jae: Just repeat that is F3 is still a capable flight controller or should I concentrate on getting an F4 flight controller from [2065.96] Jae: Magnus Strix [2067.56] Preston (RaceFlight): Well, I'll tell you an F4 is two advantages one. It's a lot faster [2072.72] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, it's a lot faster. It's on a f3. Maybe on a good day going downwind [2077.68] Preston (RaceFlight): We can do a good a killer on a f4. We can do 32 killer. It's well, at least on our board [2083.08] Preston (RaceFlight): So that makes a big difference. I mean that's four times more information to stabilize your quads. So it makes it feel smoother [2089.48] Preston (RaceFlight): We can eliminate right flight one now with our board [2093.04] Preston (RaceFlight): Crop wash doesn't even exist [2095.16] Preston (RaceFlight): You'll hear it [2096.56] Preston (RaceFlight): Like it sounds like your your quads shaking [2099.28] Preston (RaceFlight): But it actually doesn't show up in the video because we're actually kind of acting it and that's three [2104.44] Preston (RaceFlight): We're never gonna be able to do that. This is not a property power and then the other disadvantages [2108.88] Preston (RaceFlight): It has a lot less memory [2111.16] Preston (RaceFlight): So we can't store as much stuff in memory. We can't do as much math. We can't do as much calculations [2117.24] Preston (RaceFlight): We can't have there as much stuff [2120.4] Preston (RaceFlight): Like the f3 was developed to be as a cheaper alternative [2124.36] Preston (RaceFlight): To the f4 it is newer [2127.0] Preston (RaceFlight): But it was made for a specific purpose to be cheaper and now the boards are so cheap [2131.68] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean we're talking penny between the dip and two. There's really no reason to go with an f3 absolutely no reason [2138.56] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it has an inverter on it, but you can just put an inverter circuit it and that's not a reason [2144.64] Preston (RaceFlight): There's just no reason to do them [2146.2] Preston (RaceFlight): So if you're buying a new one, you know buy an f4 if you're already have an f3 [2151.72] Preston (RaceFlight): Okay, but when you put like what our board in there you're gonna realize that you've been missing out this whole time [2157.16] Jae: I think I think it's only now that it's worth it for that argument [2161.64] Jae: Getting an f4 because software is catching up because everything's catching up for you know [2166.28] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, you're price though. I mean, especially with beta flight. I mean, come on if you're if you're on a beta flight [2170.56] Preston (RaceFlight): Is there a advantage to that for probably not? [2173.88] Preston (RaceFlight): Your f3 probably flies the same on both. I mean so it's so long since I've flown beta flight [2179.4] Preston (RaceFlight): I can tell you for sure but [2181.64] Preston (RaceFlight): But yeah, I mean their thing is all about eight kilohertz to see the max [2185.16] Preston (RaceFlight): I think at one time Boris said, you know, you never need more than one killer. So [2189.04] Preston (RaceFlight): They're they're behind and we're our agreement, you know, we want to run as fast as possible [2194.24] Preston (RaceFlight): So yeah, you're on that then, you know, he's fine. But for us man our f4 with our gyro it flies [2201.64] Preston (RaceFlight): Crazy good like nothing better I can imagine and I can tell you right now. We're not maxed out [2207.4] Preston (RaceFlight): So our board is future-proof, you know, we got quite a bit of room to grow before we need to come out with an f7 [2214.24] Preston (RaceFlight): There's just there's no reason for it at the moment [2217.8] Preston (RaceFlight): But yeah, so I don't know, you know, the best way to answer that question f3 is okay [2222.08] Preston (RaceFlight): But you you know for 40 bucks, that'll be the best upgrade you ever made, you know [2226.4] Preston (RaceFlight): It's like your computer only has one gig of RAM if you put 16 gigs of RAM in it [2230.72] Preston (RaceFlight): It's gonna feel amazing, you know for pretty cheap, you know [2235.06] Preston (RaceFlight): So it's kind of the same thing. It's like if you could upgrade it's like in your computer if you upgraded the CPU and [2241.22] Preston (RaceFlight): The memory at the same time and I see someone says beta flight support 32 kilohertz in the chat [2245.38] Preston (RaceFlight): It doesn't support 32 kilohertz. Just so you know, you're not processing your data at 32 kilohertz [2250.78] Preston (RaceFlight): It is not possible to possibly 30 kills. It's the reason we dumped the whole beta plate code base is it's not possible [2257.86] Preston (RaceFlight): It's it's too inefficient. It needs to be rewritten from scratch to even hit that [2262.28] Preston (RaceFlight): And it's not just about 32 killer. It's just so everyone understands [2265.48] Preston (RaceFlight): there's a lot of other improvements and what I do recommend you do is try someone's revolt with race light and [2272.0] Preston (RaceFlight): Make a decision that way don't believe me [2274.4] Preston (RaceFlight): You know go try it for yourself and then argue with me [2278.2] Preston (RaceFlight): It's not better and I don't think you'll ever argue that once you've tried it good answer good answer [2287.35] Jae: Um, I mean, I yeah enough for these days. Yeah, it'd be interesting to try [2291.87] Jae: I think going forward and especially what you're gonna do cuz you're only in beats today, aren't you guys in pretty much the UK time? [2297.11] Jae: Beats are from today. So yeah [2301.35] Preston (RaceFlight): Around 10 p.m. Our time. So we're the next day. Good morning. It's today [2308.71] Jae: We're always in the future [2312.71] Jae: A few people are actually asking about multi-shot obviously and [2316.03] Jae: in terms of D shot as in is there any views of what you're gonna do with multi-shot and [2322.59] Preston (RaceFlight): I will say this [2324.23] Preston (RaceFlight): Race light one does support both. So if you want to try multi-shot and one shot you can prepare yourself [2330.15] Preston (RaceFlight): And everyone that's pretty much run race light one has went back to multi-shot [2334.59] Preston (RaceFlight): And the reason is is because multi-shot is four times faster than D shot [2339.27] Preston (RaceFlight): So for starters just in latency term, it's better [2343.71] Preston (RaceFlight): And in terms of the ESEs can't handle 32 kilohertz with with D shot [2351.03] Preston (RaceFlight): There's not possible of it. So you're gonna have to run slow down 30 kilohertz to run it with the exception of if you run [2357.15] Preston (RaceFlight): kiss ESEs [2358.59] Preston (RaceFlight): Which it seems to work. Okay on [2361.31] Preston (RaceFlight): Except the people we've had testing them when they hit 32 killer. They have a lot of them catch on fire [2367.47] Preston (RaceFlight): So it runs good until it doesn't so it goes back the old kiss ESEs catching on fire thing [2374.19] Jae: It's all about it [2377.15] Preston (RaceFlight): Do you know, you know people and it's not their fault probably I mean D shots the way the protocols are in it's very inefficient [2384.51] Preston (RaceFlight): You're sending way more data. The CPUs having to do way more things [2389.51] Preston (RaceFlight): You're kind of fixing a problem. It doesn't exist. I think the people that felt the difference is the way [2396.19] Preston (RaceFlight): D shot works in beta flight when the motor calculations are calculated [2401.03] Preston (RaceFlight): It sends it out to the motors right away, right with these shot as soon as it figures out what needs to be done [2405.79] Preston (RaceFlight): It sends it well with multi-shot it didn't so there was a lag there [2410.07] Preston (RaceFlight): So when they went to D shot what they're feeling more than anything is that lag is gone between when the calculations are [2415.83] Preston (RaceFlight): Dotten and then when they're they're set [2418.67] Preston (RaceFlight): Race lights never had that issue [2421.47] Preston (RaceFlight): So I think that's why it doesn't feel any different and the one big thing about the D shot thing that they found out [2426.75] Preston (RaceFlight): Which I think is great is, you know, they were moving that capacitor off the signal line to make the shot work [2432.63] Preston (RaceFlight): Removing that makes multi-shot work way better [2435.83] Preston (RaceFlight): So I think the biggest improvement they're seeing is this removing that capacitor because that was put on there for like old protocol [2443.95] Preston (RaceFlight): No, it's not neat. That's my advice [2449.25] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, my advice is modify your ESPs for D shot, but try multi-shot, but then again try both [2455.97] Jae: It's often interesting when software changes a hardware design in that way as in [2460.97] Jae: Until it's actually like a software something comes out to change it, you know protocols [2464.81] Jae: I mean, I wonder how many people are now gonna just pop this little or probably even a wrong capacitor from bits off [2475.45] Jae: And even if you've got one check your version of your AC people because they sometimes between one and the next yeah [2481.77] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it does make it better. I think that is great [2484.73] Preston (RaceFlight): I think it's great that you can take your old ESD on your thing pop that capacitor off and it runs better, you know [2490.69] Preston (RaceFlight): It's funny because it just shows how how the separation is between the people writing software and the people doing the hardware [2498.33] Preston (RaceFlight): You know it's raised like you know, we develop the boards [2500.77] Preston (RaceFlight): I work with engineers and the main thing and we also do the software. So it's a good synergy the stuff works good together [2507.01] Preston (RaceFlight): But with other stuff, it's just people making the randomly like the people making board. So I'm gonna have no clue about anything [2512.69] Preston (RaceFlight): You know, they're just making a board to make money and and so that's I think why you run into these things [2518.41] Preston (RaceFlight): They're not thinking through they don't do the other part, you know [2522.49] Preston (RaceFlight): Like I've always said support the people that that make stuff and not the people are just cloning things [2532.21] Jae: Good I don't know [2543.17] Jae: Obviously with your multi-shot then I mean with your faster boards with you know more [2547.81] Jae: Processes power on these things. Are you gonna look to baby? [2550.69] Jae: Change anything on the ESD front with multi-shot versions. Well, yeah [2554.25] Preston (RaceFlight): Actually, we have a multi-shot version to coming out which will double speed and we even have one at three times the speed [2558.41] Preston (RaceFlight): So we're gonna probably implement that [2560.85] Preston (RaceFlight): One thing we have noticed is, you know, we run a 32 kilohertz, right? [2564.29] Preston (RaceFlight): And so we send everything to the ESD at 32 kilohertz. Well, the ESD only writes to the motor at 24 kilohertz [2571.45] Preston (RaceFlight): Right. So we need to fix that little part about it and we've talked to you know, the BL Heli guys [2577.29] Preston (RaceFlight): And they say they can actually double that speed. So we think once we double that speed [2581.17] Preston (RaceFlight): You know how you've heard people complain about y'all twitches and stuff like that [2584.97] Preston (RaceFlight): We we think that's where it's coming from because it's aliasing. It's going from 32 down to 24 [2590.01] Preston (RaceFlight): So by doubling that speed it should eliminate a lot of those little issues that people have seen and we're kind of having to [2595.35] Preston (RaceFlight): Coat around them right now [2597.05] Preston (RaceFlight): When really that little fix will probably make it a lot better for everyone [2600.61] Preston (RaceFlight): So there's still your same ESD will still be able to work to the faster speed didn't need to make a little tweak [2606.01] Preston (RaceFlight): Hopefully they're they're working on that right now before we get that done. We have someone looking at it right now, too [2610.45] Preston (RaceFlight): So I think that might make things even better when that happens [2614.05] Preston (RaceFlight): I don't know if you notice we always have our own version of BL Heli and race bikes [2618.89] Preston (RaceFlight): Because we'll take it and find bugs hopefully and fix them before they even get around to fix them to make sure everyone's [2624.49] Preston (RaceFlight): Experienced the best and we might have a slightly older version in there because we know it worked well and we've tested and fixed it [2630.81] Clint: Yeah, that's that's another great thing about race flight is the ability to flash and set up all your ESEs in the configurator [2636.97] Clint: It makes life so much easier like no downloading [2640.77] Clint: B. L. Heli sweet or anything. It does it all [2643.77] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, we tried the one wire auto command yet. That one amazing just one can and a boom [2650.57] Clint: I used it for the first time yesterday. I believe and it's yeah, literally just write the quad in there [2656.67] Clint: They do it sting and yeah, Bob's your uncle [2659.27] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, there's a new written the wizard is gonna be even better because we're gonna detect the version you have and hey [2664.35] Preston (RaceFlight): You need to update these and say yes or no and then we're gonna let spin each one and let you pick which one's spinning [2670.31] Preston (RaceFlight): The wrong way, and we'll just automatically reverse the motors and do all that stuff for you, so it'll be you know really [2676.07] Preston (RaceFlight): That's a new law [2678.43] Clint: Yeah, yeah, do you have a new configurator coming out as well, but you is that right? [2684.15] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, they do one came out last night [2685.81] Preston (RaceFlight): So I don't know if you've used the one last night, but it is it is a lot different it works a lot better [2690.57] Preston (RaceFlight): And now we're just gonna start adding more and more features to it [2693.21] Preston (RaceFlight): It took us a while to kind of settle on the language and platform to use because we're using the the HID stuff [2699.57] Preston (RaceFlight): Which if anyone's listening basically your mouse uses HID. That's that's why it doesn't need any driver [2705.17] Preston (RaceFlight): they use the HID instead of serial and [2708.37] Preston (RaceFlight): you know we switched it out a race like thing this plug it in and it instantly connects and [2713.29] Preston (RaceFlight): Not everything works well with it [2714.73] Preston (RaceFlight): You know we tried a lot of different things to finally get to the framework [2717.29] Preston (RaceFlight): We're using now that that works pretty well with it, and so now it's it's been working pretty smoothly to stuff [2724.57] Preston (RaceFlight): From here on out. We're just gonna make it better and better now that we've got the solid foundation [2728.93] Clint: So first thing I want to do this evening is go and go get out and give it a go. I think [2732.89] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, you'll be amazed. How easy it is. I think and have well it works [2737.25] Jae: Well on one of my flying machines [2739.13] Jae: I had to like try and flash my [2740.63] Jae: EECs from my board that I have to unsold a solder onto another board just to get a flash with the EEC [2745.97] Jae: It's just a resold of back, so actually I'm ready to change on that [2753.41] Jae: Never again never again, and well that was just one of the ones that flies quite well actually we've got someone. That's a [2759.53] Jae: Skyminder us if there's any thoughts of a board or you know software that can do auto pit setup [2764.25] Jae: Which comes back to your accessibility and adapt to your flying style because you've got the software now and the case CPU to [2770.69] Jae: Overheads to be able to do that [2772.57] Preston (RaceFlight): yeah, I think um what we found is if we find the right kids they pretty much work on everything and [2779.49] Preston (RaceFlight): We're gonna have like a tuning database and I'll have it automatically report back [2782.77] Preston (RaceFlight): And you can get different tunes for your configuration things like that, but I think you've guys seen and it's getting better and better [2787.81] Preston (RaceFlight): That's a minute. Um you know you flash it to your quad. It flies amazing, but I think from that point [2793.33] Preston (RaceFlight): It's just tweaking a little bit to get that little teeny feel that you need [2798.29] Preston (RaceFlight): Like it's not race lights not like beta flight [2800.89] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it flies pretty amazing and and part of that 32 kilohertz [2804.73] Preston (RaceFlight): Because because we're running at 32 kilohertz the tuning windows enormous. You know it's [2809.81] Preston (RaceFlight): immense um so [2812.29] Preston (RaceFlight): Quads in general fly better because we're we're processing at 32,000 times a second the PID loops as you're operating at that speed [2819.13] Preston (RaceFlight): So it can make up for inconsistencies with your tune and make it a lot closer [2824.57] Preston (RaceFlight): So I definitely we push 32 kilohertz because let's put this way [2828.45] Preston (RaceFlight): I flash right flight one personally on 25 probably different quads and everything a lot of a blue break immediately like at 98% [2835.61] Preston (RaceFlight): You know where they could be [2837.69] Preston (RaceFlight): And so you know we were constantly working on that and trying to get it better and better [2841.05] Preston (RaceFlight): But we think at some point it'll be pretty flawless almost every quads don't look amazing [2845.81] Preston (RaceFlight): And you're gonna pick your motors and your other things that will tweak it slightly based on your configuration [2850.53] Preston (RaceFlight): But I think it's just too hard for the quad to know like the auto-tune stuff doesn't work. Well. You know it has [2856.85] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, it's a personal preference thing like some guys want it more robotic some guys want it more organic [2862.85] Preston (RaceFlight): That's more what it's about than anything well interestingly [2866.41] Jae: Gucci early on into the chat did say that race like one on revolt on stock PIDS is damn near perfect for 95% of pilots [2872.71] Jae: You know obviously stop is working for most setups and most pilots that put it on so yeah [2877.83] Preston (RaceFlight): And I think those people is not working for its filters, and we actually have [2881.95] Preston (RaceFlight): automatic filters and stuff to [2884.15] Preston (RaceFlight): That you can enable to do the filtering automatically, so I think it's less [2888.07] Preston (RaceFlight): His it's more filtering at that point and and the only reason we don't do automatic filtering by default is because it'll change the way [2894.35] Preston (RaceFlight): Your quad flies from time to time. It'll still fight good [2897.91] Preston (RaceFlight): But it's a slight subtle change and guys like get go notice. That's the level change [2902.99] Preston (RaceFlight): I drive the nuts you know they they they know their quads so well if it's still the teeny bit different [2908.23] Preston (RaceFlight): They're going on crazy. They think about and well [2911.27] Jae: It's throwing in a variable such as wind and air pressure and things like that can you know [2915.67] Preston (RaceFlight): Create havoc for trying to process against that yeah, and most people you know most people who you know especially who haven't done this [2922.59] Preston (RaceFlight): Long time will put on there. They think it flies amazing every time [2926.07] Preston (RaceFlight): But I think it's the pro guys that the automatic stuff doesn't work for as much for because they're just they just know their quads [2931.47] Preston (RaceFlight): So well, they don't want it to be automatic. They want to be exactly like they want to be [2935.91] Jae: So it's not like a point of flying once you get something perfect. You just have it perfect [2941.19] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, yeah, and I think one thing I will say is if you think your quads flying perfect try something else [2946.71] Preston (RaceFlight): But like even if you're not running a race flight on or evil try it because it's something else [2950.87] Preston (RaceFlight): Perfect might change really quick once you try something better [2954.19] Preston (RaceFlight): I think that's the biggest thing like you know when we started out. We've let's just like people fly or quads random [2959.83] Jae: Hey try this out. You know that was I kind of I kind of I can't afford to try too many people's different quads [2968.99] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, yeah well [2970.11] Preston (RaceFlight): You know now you can just upgrade you know put your new flight controller in your quads by flying to me [2974.51] Preston (RaceFlight): You know in my opinion take any quads put a rebuild in it. It's gonna fly amazing [2978.51] Preston (RaceFlight): You know there that's gonna be your biggest okay, and think about it. It's the brain of your quad [2982.95] Preston (RaceFlight): What's the most important thing your brain? You know yeah? [2986.87] Preston (RaceFlight): So it makes sense that that would be the best upgrade you could do, but yeah [2991.07] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it is amazing. I thought someone asked us what the best these are for race flight [2996.23] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean really any be a holly or be a holly. Yes. Yes. These are gonna work fine [3001.27] Preston (RaceFlight): You know we created our own ESC just because we wanted people to have one they know it works [3005.51] Preston (RaceFlight): But I think the biggest thing is you don't know if the ESC you're buying is junk or not right you know [3010.91] Preston (RaceFlight): Exactly and [3012.43] Jae: Quality control quality parts [3014.39] Jae: I mean we saw it with sort of the motor the NASA boards of coming out you get some that are just yeah [3019.87] Jae: Okay, chucked out cheap, but the quality of the parts. They're using is not up to par and [3024.39] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, and the biggest thing is to like you know [3027.03] Preston (RaceFlight): We're doing things on these these that I'm at to do these bets are not made to do what we're doing with them [3031.51] Preston (RaceFlight): So you are gonna get some of your fees that come from the factory that that aren't gonna work no matter who you are [3035.71] Preston (RaceFlight): We get them everyone gets them the differences like if you get one you say hey [3040.55] Preston (RaceFlight): Immediately we're sending you out another one like no questions that you're not returning anything [3044.59] Preston (RaceFlight): You know you're not having to deal with the return from today [3047.23] Preston (RaceFlight): We're just gonna send you know those questions that and and I think that's the biggest deal [3053.95] Preston (RaceFlight): By always my life just [3057.83] Preston (RaceFlight): Bye [3060.63] Preston (RaceFlight): Still fly yeah, yeah, yeah exactly by the way someone's still going about the 32 kilohertz bit of plate [3066.15] Preston (RaceFlight): I said it doesn't process the 32 kilohertz [3068.99] Preston (RaceFlight): It does read the gyro at 32 kilohertz, but the gyro already does that internally, so it's not an advantage [3074.23] Preston (RaceFlight): It doesn't process the data at 32 kilohertz, so [3078.51] Preston (RaceFlight): that's what people don't understand there's a difference between reading it and [3083.23] Preston (RaceFlight): Processing it at 32 kilohertz. That's where you're you know it takes the CPU power to actually use the data [3088.87] Preston (RaceFlight): You know instead of just averaging it together and coming up with a number you know [3092.19] Preston (RaceFlight): So [3094.19] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, it's funny. You know these stupid arguments. We argue non-stop and really doesn't matter [3099.07] Preston (RaceFlight): I don't care if they deflate processes that 8 kilohertz and flies better [3102.91] Preston (RaceFlight): Then fly beta flight just try race late with a revolve first before you decide it's better [3107.67] Preston (RaceFlight): No matter what it's about, but this is more than just 32 kilohertz [3111.31] Preston (RaceFlight): It's about the way everything works together [3114.19] Preston (RaceFlight): How our code works how we do things our mixer works how everything works? [3119.15] Jae: Since Clinton has two setups identical, so it's gonna. Let me when I think [3131.99] Jae: Redundancy called redundancy you need a you need a fair [3138.23] Clint: Mind you what he says it says I've upgraded to race flight and the f4 fight control [3143.27] Clint: I haven't crashed anymore [3144.11] Clint: So the redundant one has it's still literally shiny, and it's been flown once as a test. That's it in about a month and a half [3153.71] Jae: Nothing to do with you actually getting a better pilot every time you fly, but no I mean this [3158.91] Clint: I don't know it's hard. It's hard to judge [3160.91] Clint: I mean the thing is is that I have since I've had race flight [3164.55] Clint: I have stopped crashing a lot and I have definitely noticed an improvement in my flying so I [3170.33] Clint: I really do put a lot of that down to the flight controller and what it's doing for me [3174.97] Jae: Well even though you're trusting it surely if you trust a flight controller you more daring [3180.33] Clint: I mean capable you feel that up you find water and everything as I you know trust [3185.69] Preston (RaceFlight): I think when I think when you see other people fly like beta flight like watch their fingers [3189.41] Preston (RaceFlight): You'll see like they're moving their fingers constantly like [3192.01] Preston (RaceFlight): Constantly like nannying their quad [3193.89] Preston (RaceFlight): You know that make it do what they want and then you'll watch guys that fly race flight [3197.41] Preston (RaceFlight): and their fingers will move super smooth and not that much because it's like you pointed the thing and [3203.09] Preston (RaceFlight): It just don't you know you don't have to keep it on that straight path the whole time [3207.29] Preston (RaceFlight): You don't have to back up the throttle under full throttle turns [3210.53] Preston (RaceFlight): It it just goes you know and I think that's probably why you're flying better because it's less [3216.61] Preston (RaceFlight): You have to do you know the flight controllers handle more of it [3219.73] Preston (RaceFlight): And you know I think for the the kind of like the middle of the road guys not the guys that are beginners [3225.57] Preston (RaceFlight): It's not the guys that are experts [3227.33] Preston (RaceFlight): It's the biggest improvement because it they're having to not you know have all that muscle memory that the real advanced guys have to [3234.97] Preston (RaceFlight): And still comply you know but as well [3237.37] Preston (RaceFlight): I think that kind of scares people too you know the better it gets flying that these are gets like these guys that are like [3242.89] Preston (RaceFlight): You know the top racers. They're afraid the 13-year-old is going to come along and you know blow them away and [3248.97] Preston (RaceFlight): You know I guess they better keep practicing because you know it probably is going to get more and more that way the easier [3254.57] Preston (RaceFlight): To get people into it, but I don't see it as a bad thing [3257.49] Preston (RaceFlight): You need more people doing the hobbies more people joining it more people more people do it the more money [3262.21] Preston (RaceFlight): There is the better the stuff's gonna get the more fun. You know more development. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah [3267.49] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean it's good for everyone. I know you know I wouldn't worry about it [3271.53] Preston (RaceFlight): You know it would be really cool to go to all these races be like 500 entry that was right [3276.05] Preston (RaceFlight): You know multiple fields and all the other stuff [3279.05] Preston (RaceFlight): You know I have class [3281.89] Jae: Yes, I think it's one of those industries. It's on the cutting edge of consumer [3289.69] Jae: Electronics to the point of what they can do and fit in and you know the edge of battery development of small things [3294.45] Jae: It's the edge of making these processes fly with gyros and everything in the stabilization [3298.21] Jae: It's the edge of what we see so much new development because it's still a consumer interest mostly [3304.49] Jae: But the development for that consumer interest largely into an unknown is immense for what you can [3311.13] Jae: You know from ESCs going through software versions flight controllers starting off from the original KK to multi-weets of whether you know [3317.49] Jae: I've got all those it has been constant development by people for people and it's we're quite lucky and I went [3325.09] Jae: Pastime and stuff to have such exciting changes all the time, but it has nothing with my bank balance ever [3333.01] Preston (RaceFlight): I guess it could be worse. I mean like if you're under rate road racing or anything like that [3337.07] Preston (RaceFlight): It's way more expensive. I mean that's what I used to do before I did quad [3340.87] Preston (RaceFlight): You know a set of tires is gonna cost you like fifteen hundred bucks for a weekend [3344.67] Preston (RaceFlight): Wow what racing what racing was it sorry like road racing. You know [3350.59] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, you know [3352.39] Preston (RaceFlight): You guys do that over there, right? [3355.35] Jae: Variants like the touring cars we have the motor GP the yeah, there's all sorts, but yeah [3362.67] Preston (RaceFlight): That was way more expensive and way more dangerous [3365.63] Preston (RaceFlight): Like I like this much better [3368.87] Preston (RaceFlight): To replace some three dollar props and then fifty hundred dollars tires when you hit something [3374.71] Preston (RaceFlight): Yeah, I guess it's all perspective hobbies have always been expensive [3377.67] Preston (RaceFlight): I think as they go this is probably one of the cheapest hobby, but it is the most fun [3382.31] Jae: I mean I never have I thought oh my it's my lunch break [3384.81] Jae: I'll go out and enjoy my hobby or it's before work [3387.59] Jae: I'll enjoy my hobby in the same way I do now on a flying but yeah, you can do it anywhere [3391.63] Preston (RaceFlight): That's what's nice about too. You can just be you know wherever in the world and go fly [3395.59] Preston (RaceFlight): I mean you can even be inside and fly your tiny wolf or whatever [3398.35] Preston (RaceFlight): So it is pretty cool that there's there's so much you can do it everywhere you go more [3403.55] Jae: With more base flights with more ways [3407.87] Jae: Having you on the show today [3408.83] Jae: And obviously with so many developments of things going on and you've new gooies new sort of code and everything [3414.39] Jae: Bites today.
