[40.1] Jae: Actually, we've been feeling a bit, shouldn't we?
[43.1] Jae: I've been better, but yeah.
[45.1] Jae: Well, you're in good spirits, you're smiling and laughing and hopefully that doesn't hurt.
[51.14] Jae: For those that don't know, and probably nobody does, Tony had a little intimate moment with
[56.54] Jae: something that was flying through the air.
[59.5] Jae: And that's what prompted this idea behind the show because it's the start of the drone
[64.78] Jae: season obviously and many, many more people are getting into racing and flying these things
[70.02] Jae: and so more and more we feel that we should do the public service broadcasting episodes
[74.7] Jae: where we talk about the bad things and how not to do them and talk about the good things
[78.58] Jae: that people do that mitigate the bad things or the risk of the bad things.
[82.7] Jae: So yeah, I mean, we've all, I guess we've all made silly mistakes, schoolboy errors
[88.3] Jae: and stuff like that.
[89.76] Jae: And sometimes when you're dealing with these things, they get quite nasty.
[95.5] Jae: I've had one prop cut from when they spun up and the rest of my prop cuts, when I'm
[102.66] Jae: trying to tighten my props on, my fingers are holding the prop.
[106.94] Tony: I have to do it.
[110.46] Jae: I mean, have you had any prop cuts prior to this one, which we'll cover?
[115.3] Tony: No, no, yeah, I've never had anything, I've never had any prop cuts as in, you know, when
[128.52] Tony: you power on the laptop and all that, I've always taken my props off and I've never had
[132.4] Tony: any start-ups or whatever of a quarter or anything like that, so I've been, yeah, it's
[138.32] Tony: been fine.
[139.84] Jae: I mean, mine was about four years in and I had my first one.
[142.84] Jae: And what happened?
[144.84] Jae: Well, okay, I was flying my quad around and I had been flying a lot, but my skills were
[150.76] Jae: getting better and I was being more daring and I was crashing a lot more, power looping
[154.92] Jae: trees and everything.
[155.92] Jae: And it was on one of the SPF boards, the seriously pro racing F3 boards that don't crash well
[165.16] Jae: anyway.
[166.16] Jae: And it was just being a little bit weird, it wouldn't necessarily arm, so I went home
[169.28] Jae: and I tried to just, you know, see if the switches were working and everything like
[172.88] Jae: that.
[173.88] Jae: I just hooked that up to the computer, no battery.
[176.48] Jae: And then I was, I think it was something like throttle calibration, I did something or other,
[182.28] Jae: and it was only once I'd disconnected it from the computer and actually armed it, it spun
[185.72] Jae: off in front of my head, like I was sat at the desk and it spun up right in front of me.
[190.8] Jae: Ninja-like reflexes, I did catch it, but I think it's one of the top of my fingers, almost
[196.16] Jae: clean off.
[197.16] Jae: So it was a big clap.
[198.16] NJ: Yeah.
[199.16] Jae: I know.
[200.16] Jae: Sorry.
[201.16] Jae: But time bandage kept it on, a couple of weeks was annoying, but it was fine.
[205.44] Jae: And I think it was a scar, but I was lucky because it was right next to my face.
[209.36] Jae: You know, I sat at my desk.
[210.92] Jae: And ever since then, I've been extra careful because like you said, when you're hooking
[214.08] Jae: them up to the PCs, anything can happen if you've got your props on and battery connected.
[219.08] Tony: Yeah, that's it, always take your props off.
[222.28] Jae: But that was my own fault.
[224.56] Jae: That was something that I did, and I guess I had learned from the mistake, but the truth
[228.8] Jae: be known is that it'd be easier not to learn from mistakes.
[233.56] Jae: It would be.
[236.12] Jae: Yeah.
[237.12] Jae: So come on, Tony, fill us in on the story details.
[241.52] Jae: You don't have any names to wear or anything, but...
[243.48] Tony: Oh, I'm not going to name names or anything like that, because it's not fair, and it was
[248.36] Tony: a freak accident, but went flying with mates Saturday, I think it was Saturday afternoon.
[257.0] Tony: And yeah, just like some new guys come up younger than us, so they're just eager to
[264.32] Tony: fly.
[265.32] Tony: And you know how it is, you crash out while you're racing, and you just want to get up
[269.12] Tony: and get your quad and start flying again.
[271.96] Tony: And one of the guys ran on without saying anything while I was flying, and I happened
[277.04] Tony: to see him, and I just dumped my quad into the ground, and said, look, you need to call
[283.0] Tony: if you're going on track at least, so that was that.
[287.64] Tony: And then I said I'm going on track to pick my quad up, went to pick my quad up from the
[296.08] Tony: track, and got smashed in the face with a quad, basically, which was not fun.
[309.52] Tony: 5S, 5S into my chin, with a GoPro on, I pretty much wrecked his quad on top of his quad with
[322.76] Tony: my jaw.
[324.48] Tony: So I know I haven't got a glass jaw, so I should have been a boxer.
[331.72] Tony: At 5Stitches, when it happened, one of my mates come running over, and he was really,
[337.52] Tony: really good, called the ambulance and everything, because there was blood, and he took his t-shirt
[342.32] Tony: off, and I was just holding my chin, because I thought it was broke, I thought I had no
[348.76] Tony: teeth, I was too scared to move my tongue around, I was dazed, I felt sick.
[355.32] Tony: It was just awful, just one of them awful things that you never want to happen, and
[362.56] Tony: it happened, and I was like, shit, sorry for saying, I thought, stomach's happened, I've
[368.28] Tony: got no teeth, or, you know, stomach's happened, it's hit my jaw, I was in so much pain, it
[374.32] Tony: seemed like ages that the ambulance got there, and they actually got there in like 10 minutes,
[379.32] Tony: which was really good, and ended up going to Tootie Hospital, where they had that 24
[384.48] Tony: hours in A&E, so they were trying to film me, and I was like, I can't speak, so I was
[388.72] Tony: like, no, do you want to be filmed, I was texting, no, go away, I don't want bad drone
[394.08] Tony: news, you know, bad drone news, because you know, they would have had a field day with
[399.56] Jae: it, so.
[400.56] Tony: You would have.
[401.8] Tony: Yeah, so, yeah, I had five stitches, and come home that night, and it's been not a nice
[408.68] Tony: week for eating or drinking, I've had the stitches out today, so I feel a little bit
[415.32] Tony: better, but it's all like itchy and stuff, but it still hurts when I open my mouth wide,
[420.8] Tony: but, I just think, sorry.
[424.8] Jae: You hit your face, didn't it?
[426.96] Tony: It hit my chin, just dead on there.
[430.04] Tony: Can you give us a close-up?
[431.04] Tony: I mean, can you give us a close-up?
[432.04] Tony: I don't think you can see it, I mean, it's, I've actually healed quite well.
[439.56] Jae: Actually, the beard may have protected a little, that's why I'm growing mine, in case I get
[443.72] Jae: any pop strokes to the face.
[445.72] Tony: That's it.
[446.72] Jae: The extra layer of protection cushioning.
[448.72] Tony: Well, I've got a massive bruise here, and I don't know if it bounced off my chin, or
[455.36] Tony: I got struck by two.
[457.92] Jae: But it's probably likely that it hit your face, and you know if you hit a tree on one
[462.16] Jae: arm, the cord naturally wants to spin, so it probably spun into your chest then.
[466.76] Jae: Yeah.
[467.76] Tony: I still class myself as bloody lucky, because if it had been up here, I would have probably
[473.08] Tony: been blind.
[474.08] Tony: If it had been around this area, I would have definitely had a smashed up nose and no teeth.
[479.92] Tony: Down here, I mean, my cut was deep enough to maybe cut right into my throat.
[484.72] Jae: Well, that's it.
[485.72] Jae: If it goes on the side of the neck, or anything like that, then...
[488.72] Tony: I was just lucky, like it hit this bony bit.
[491.72] Tony: I mean, I honestly thought it was broken, when I went to A&E and had the x-rays, they
[499.2] Tony: said, no, you're fine, you haven't broke it.
[500.8] Tony: I was like, thank God for that.
[502.08] Tony: And then I could, I'd slowly got more confident to move my tongue around, and I was like,
[509.16] Tony: okay, I've got my teeth, they're still in my head, thank God.
[512.88] Tony: So, yeah, it was just one of them things.
[515.2] Tony: But, yeah, so this is what kind of made, we talked earlier, to talk about safety, and
[522.96] Tony: now you never think it's going to happen to you.
[525.56] Tony: And, you know, this, it was a 5S cord as well, it ran straight into me.
[532.12] Tony: It was probably doing about 50, at least, how I didn't break anything, I don't know.
[539.48] Jae: You know, you can always like...
[541.28] Tony: Break his cord, though.
[542.68] Jae: You have the injury, you're allowed to say whatever speed, it must have been doing 100.
[546.68] Tony: Yeah.
[547.68] Tony: No, it was easily 80.
[549.84] Jae: Well, these days, on 5S, you're looking at least 70 to 80, aren't you?

[555.2] Jae: Yeah, it was...
[557.2] Jae: Was he trying to aim through a gate?
[559.2] Tony: Yeah, he came up, I think he came up through a gate, and I was picking my cord up.
[564.0] Tony: Because I said I'm going on track, but he obviously didn't hear, or didn't look, because
[569.6] Tony: he obviously put his goggles on and flew, because he took off and flew, and then flew
[574.4] Tony: into me.
[575.4] Tony: So, it wasn't as if he was going round and round, but it was just an accident, and he
[581.12] Tony: was just as worried as I was.
[583.12] Tony: I showed his hands, and he was like, don't worry, don't worry, it's fine, and it was
[588.08] Tony: a nice float.
[589.08] Jae: That's good.
[591.39] Jae: Well, we're not going to name names, but I'm just going to say, sometimes when people
[595.27] Jae: shout out, or like, it comes from, you know, plane flying days, you'd always shout, taking
[599.83] Jae: off landing, dead stick, anything like that.
[603.99] Jae: But the trouble is, not everyone shouts very loudly, and perhaps when people are in FPV,
[610.23] Jae: and sometimes people even have microphones, or headphones in to, you know, get the audio.
[616.35] Jae: So there's a lot of things that it may easily get a lot lost, if they're deaf in one ear,
[620.63] Jae: then whatever.
[621.63] Jae: Yeah, definitely.
[623.23] Jae: What people should have for race events or something, then, is, you know, those airhorns,
[628.79] Jae: just to signify that there is a danger on the track or something, because, regardless
[632.67] Jae: of what you're listening to, you'd hear a noise like that over, someone shouting, going
[636.55] Jae: on to the track, which people may not.
[640.07] Tony: I know what it's like, it's like, if you crash out and others are flying, you just
[644.31] Tony: want to go out and get your cord and get back up in the air.
[648.83] Tony: Where we race, we've got a news that we're just, after this has happened, we've all
[652.91] Tony: talked and said, look, if you crash out, that's it.
[658.59] Tony: You stay down, you don't go out and get your cord, you wait until everyone's crashed or
[662.75] Tony: finish their flying, and that's just the new rules, because it's not worth it.
[666.83] Tony: This could have been a hell of a lot worse, I mean, I'm just glad it hit me where it
[670.83] Tony: did it, mate.
[671.83] Jae: I mean, at organized events, you pretty much wait until the end of the race, don't you?
[675.95] Tony: Yeah, well, you have to, definitely.
[678.35] Tony: I'm trying to sort of tell people to be careful when you're flying with your mates, because
[682.43] Tony: you lose that, you know, you've been flying with them so long, they know I'm out there,
[688.19] Tony: you know, but it's just not worth it.
[692.99] Jae: It's, you know, like, we've had someone in our group that we've called Loose Cannon.
[698.03] Jae: Yeah.
[699.03] Jae: I mean, I think I've referred to him before, if you're out there, Andy, big thumbs up,
[704.11] Jae: man.
[705.11] Jae: We love you.
[706.11] Jae: I've pointed to Loose Cannon name, and I guess not everyone will pull each other up
[711.91] Jae: in a club or even just a Facebook group, you know, not even a club where there's a level
[716.63] Jae: of authority and a chain of command in that sense, but even when people are just collecting
[721.27] Jae: each other together, I think it's important that people say something, it doesn't have
[726.55] Jae: to be much, if somebody acts or does something that is entirely questionable.
[731.99] Jae: I mean, I was flying with someone who's a very good pilot, and don't get me wrong, this
[736.67] Jae: is just even he says this was a rarity, but flying line of sight, he brought it back,
[742.95] Jae: but he brought it back to height level, literally inches away from his face.
[748.51] Jae: And I was only a foot or two away as well.
[750.95] Jae: And I said, well, what are you doing?
[752.19] Jae: And I put him up, and I actually felt a little bit bad about it, but I was hoping in the
[756.95] Jae: same time that just raising that concern may make people more mindful, and it's not about
[764.43] Jae: policing people.
[765.51] Jae: It's about having an awareness for safety and respect for these things can cause serious
[773.03] Jae: harm, if not death.
[774.39] Tony: So I believe that you could die from a drone strike.
[779.87] Tony: I mean, maybe if it hit me in the head, I could, you know, I mean, there's many things
[787.03] Tony: that definitely, especially the speedo travel out now, I mean, it probably wasn't going
[791.91] Tony: for whack, but, you know, it was fast enough.
[795.83] Jae: When you consider how many people are racing now at weekends, though, and how many more
[799.39] Jae: are up there, I think it can be done extremely safely.
[805.07] Jae: All things considered.
[806.63] Jae: And I guess that's the question is, I will open up to the chat room, everyone that's in
[812.95] Jae: there. Do you speak to people if they're in your club or wherever you fly with your
[816.83] Jae: groups, if they do something stupid?

[951.35] Tony: I've got quite a big tent, which is takes too long to sell.
[955.31] Tony: But yeah, I'm going to get a little two man tent this year.
[958.39] Jae: Yeah. My little orange one that's made it down that sort of neck of the woods for
[962.51] Jae: times is already helped out.
[963.91] Jae: But that's the thing, actually, there's camping in FPV.
[967.75] Jae: And like I've always thought that you need at least a three man tent to go camping for
[972.59] Jae: one person with FPV stuff because you want to put all your stuff inside the tent.
[976.71] Jae: And it's important if you're having anything like that and you're not actually having a
[979.99] Jae: cast or something to have water repelling things, rather a double skin on the tent.
[987.15] Jae: I know a lot of people have camped down there last year, got wet backs, wet equipment,
[991.71] Jae: which also then is a safety concern as we bring it back to safety.
[999.59] Jae: Be safe out there, people.
[1001.19] Jae: Yeah. So fossil stuff.
[1004.11] Jae: He wasn't flying a fossil stuff frame.
[1005.59] Jae: I'm guessing this.
[1006.99] Jae: No, it'd be ironic if you got smashed by a fossil stuff.

[1017.47] Jae: Well, you know, fossil stuff is our main sponsor.

[1060.07] Tony: Definitely Smokey, because he's our main guy at the moment.

[1069.11] Tony: I haven't done any proper events yet this year.

[1075.51] Tony: I think it might be me, Brad is, and someone else.

[1084.15] Tony: I mean, even just I don't even care about coming first, second, third, last.

[1091.23] Tony: The whole atmosphere of that weekend last year, it's like after the day's flying
[1096.55] Tony: and then sitting around the campfire with all your mates was just so good.
[1101.23] Tony: Yeah, that's the thing I love.
[1103.63] Tony: And then all the, you know, we had all the night planes flying while we were
[1107.03] Tony: having a beer and sitting around a fire is wicked.
[1110.63] Tony: And then all your mates come down and it's just brilliant.

[1116.11] Jae: It is.
[1117.11] Jae: Well, I mean, the first year I didn't camp, I just went up the day the last year
[1120.15] Jae: was camping and I didn't actually stay on site.
[1122.79] Jae: I actually stayed off site.
[1124.63] Jae: No, you've got to camp.
[1127.31] Jae: That's the whole FPV thing.
[1128.71] Jae: I mean, I've come to nothing in Valley.
[1130.43] Jae: And I tell you one thing, I always have such a good night's sleep there.
[1134.71] Jae: I think it's the fresh air or the running around the quad all weekend to warn myself
[1139.15] Jae: out.
[1141.15] Jae: Yeah.
[1142.15] Jae: So Mr.
[1142.51] Jae: Thrust is hoping you're going to have everything ready for him, Tony, or them
[1145.67] Jae: when they come down.
[1147.87] Tony: Yeah, we get it all ready for Mr.

[1152.19] Tony: I met him at the first ever Nationals two years ago.
[1158.47] Tony: There was a group of group of Scottish lads and they'd got in and I'd got in and I
[1164.23] Tony: went up with Jack and Radio C guys and they were just good enough to take me
[1169.75] Tony: under their wing.
[1170.95] Jae: Was that the year I was there?
[1173.07] Tony: Yeah, you were running a streaming.
[1176.75] Tony: Yeah, that's it.
[1177.75] Tony: So I sat with them with their guys and they they took me under their wing and helped me
[1182.27] Tony: out with stuff and let me sit with them and stuff.
[1184.27] Tony: So I wasn't on my own because I didn't really know anyone then.
[1187.27] Tony: Yeah, a year and a half ago.
[1189.47] Tony: Wow.
[1190.47] Tony: It's weird.
[1191.47] Tony: It's like that was the first ever one and that's and, you know, it seems to have grown
[1197.03] Tony: so much.

[1220.39] NJ: I'd say the weather was probably the best bit, really beautiful blue skies, no drone

[1226.87] NJ: Unfortunately, I've heard too many horror stories about people getting drones confiscated
[1229.95] NJ: going into Morocco and whatever you say.
[1233.31] NJ: I thought I better not risk it.
[1235.51] NJ: So I didn't didn't do any droning for four or six days.
[1238.79] Jae: But yeah, I think since you've last been on the show, I've been flying race flight.
[1244.35] Jae: Yeah.

[1336.79] NJ: And the most impressive thing I've seen in the last jump from RC, I think it was nine
[1342.03] NJ: to 12 or whatever it was, was the ability to switch to from 4S to 5S without having
[1348.15] NJ: to reach you neither.
[1349.15] NJ: And that was kind of the one that impressed me the most because normally when you've got
[1353.95] NJ: to a higher voltage, you're going to get oscillation and you have to start lowering
[1357.35] NJ: your pits.
[1358.35] NJ: And on the earlier release candidates, I did have to lower my pits to get 5S to work.
[1363.87] NJ: And on RC9, I think it was or 12, one of the later two, I went to 5S on exactly the same
[1372.35] NJ: tune and it was great.
[1374.59] NJ: And it didn't have any of the kind of typical problems you have with going up on voltage.
[1380.07] NJ: So yeah, they're doing some clever, dynamic stuff.
[1384.11] NJ: And yeah, it's good to see it all developing nicely.

[2473.95] NJ: coming in and being such a new new hobby or an area of the hobby, there's going to
[2479.35] NJ: be lots of people that just don't know this and you get a group of people to get accidents

[2483.39] NJ: So it's it's just one of those things you have to persist on promoting.
[2487.67] NJ: It's much like the world of real aviation.
[2490.11] NJ: All the greatest aviation manuals, all the commercial aviation manuals are mostly written

[2495.67] NJ: If you haven't heard that term before, it's because accidents have happened, blood has
[2499.11] NJ: been shed and then a new rule has come about as a result of it.
[2502.75] NJ: And, you know, that is just one of those things.

[2511.03] NJ: been an eye or a jugular.

[2731.99] Tony: I was the first drone related incident they had in that particular hospital and they were bloody

[2745.31] Tony: You will just use this drone, all drone kills, man smacks his chin open and you know, you know

[2755.39] Tony: So I was just like, no, I do not want this going in the news or on the tele or anything.

[2763.59] NJ: Most of those things are freak accidents, but there are sensible things that can be done to
[2768.23] NJ: avoid it.
[2768.71] NJ: But I mean, there are there has been deaths in the model aircraft world.
[2773.43] NJ: There has been death by planes.
[2775.83] NJ: There's been actually a few, you know, not not loads, but there's been a few with 3D helicopters as
[2781.75] NJ: well, because there you're looking at a 600, well, you know, 120 millimetre and upwards carbon
[2787.75] NJ: spinning blades with incredibly high torque motors doing 3D.
[2790.83] NJ: And some of these guys are doing inches from the face.
[2793.83] NJ: And I think it was two, three years ago, a guy in Florida, great competition pilot, named scapes
[2800.55] NJ: me.
[2801.67] NJ: Yeah, he had an incident that came and literally just took off his neck off and he was he was
[2807.15] NJ: killed instantly.
[2808.71] NJ: Wow.
[2809.35] NJ: So, yeah, you know, this stuff happens.
[2810.87] NJ: I don't think what we have is dangerous in the same way that that is, you know, it's still
[2816.23] NJ: something capable of high speed with rotating parts, scary beings.
[2821.47] Jae: And I guess more to the point, and this is what happened to us, is that we actually try and aim
[2827.71] Jae: for small gaps, particularly on a race circuit.
[2831.31] Jae: Usually you aim for the flags and the gates and you might crash near that flag or gate and then
[2835.63] Jae: you may need to go back and saw the people aiming for that.
[2838.35] Jae: At least in the 3D heli world of things, it was a display generally well organised in that
[2843.79] Jae: sense, rather than a track where you're trying to aim through.
[2846.47] Jae: So the natural risk is higher, I'd say, for us with the racing, just for the nature of where
[2854.83] Jae: you're going.
[2855.15] Tony: I don't know, them 3D helis, when they start up, they always stand behind, I normally find
[2862.23] Tony: Jack and just stand behind him.
[2864.23] Tony: Yeah, they're very, they are very into the nature.
[2866.35] Tony: They're so scary.

[2869.95] Tony: Get beyond Jack, you'd be all right.
[2872.15] NJ: This is the problem with helicopters and most hovering aircraft like that, as opposed to a
[2878.51] NJ: plane and why, especially in the model world, why helicopters have the potential to be so
[2884.51] NJ: dangerous is because there are so many, the aviation terms, single points of failure is the
[2891.71] NJ: term, where, you know, one, two pound link could go on a helicopter and the whole thing's coming
[2898.43] NJ: out the sky.
[2898.99] NJ: There's there's lots of single points of failure, which is why the people that normally build
[2903.19] NJ: these, you know, you have to be, you know, I spent 10 years flying at RC helicopters and longer
[2909.59] NJ: than that, actually.
[2910.27] NJ: And it's I used to be so meticulous about every little part of the build.
[2915.15] NJ: And it's taken a while to adjust that, you know, with quads, you just bolt stuff on, go and fly,
[2920.03] NJ: you crash, you rip something off, you put a zip tie on, you go up and fly.
[2923.95] NJ: If you crash like that with helicopters, the whole thing's going home.
[2927.51] NJ: Even if it's the tiniest little knock, you've got to spend ages going over every component to make
[2931.91] NJ: sure it's air worthy and back up.
[2934.35] NJ: And it hits the wallet a lot harder with with helicopters than it does with quads.
[2938.51] Jae: But I think it requires more skill probably to put together an engineering skill to put
[2946.15] Jae: through together a helicopter.
[2948.11] NJ: Yeah, you have to follow these strategies.
[2950.51] NJ: You have to be careful.
[2951.35] Jae: You have to be meticulous.
[2952.99] Jae: Whereas you and I have both seen some dodgy soldering joints, dodgy soldering on board.

[3093.71] NJ: because it forces you to respect it and what it's capable of.
[3097.31] NJ: If you fly with people who just like zoom past the pits and past people's heads and their own heads and they just laugh,
[3104.07] NJ: they're the people I won't go flying with.
[3105.71] NJ: It's as simple as that.
[3107.75] NJ: Yeah, you don't promote that in the hobby.

[3151.63] NJ: Velocidrone 1.8 is out and it's getting better and better, in my opinion.

[3160.63] NJ: Well, 1.6, up to that point, the biggest thing I didn't like about it was that they had dropped the Batorfly code in.
[3170.63] NJ: Which is a good thing.

[3176.63] NJ: There was some of the tuning issues that you can get were also in there as well.
[3182.63] NJ: So there was some of the kickback problems that weren't actually possible to tune out the correct way.
[3189.63] NJ: Some of those issues were actually inside the sim and had problems when it came to getting the tune exactly the way it should be.
[3199.63] NJ: Which I found kind of strange that all these real-world problems, some of the real-world problems and quirks were actually...
[3208.63] NJ: Because this is of an earlier base flight release.
[3213.63] NJ: I think the code was based on 2.9 or something around there.
[3218.63] NJ: But yeah, some of those quirks were in there as well.
[3221.63] NJ: And I'm happy to see, since 1.7, that those quirks are gone and it's tuning up the way it should.
[3228.63] NJ: Which is great and it actually feels really nice and the stick feels good, the rates feel good.
[3234.63] NJ: So the Minute Velostrone is my favourite sim by far, just because of the way it feels.
[3239.63] NJ: It's not necessarily the best-looking one, but it is still good-looking.
[3243.63] Jae: Is that new in the new release? They've got a new map in there as well, haven't they?
[3247.63] NJ: I think so. I haven't actually been through and seen what they've fixed and what's in it, but I had a quick blast on it.
[3252.63] NJ: And yeah, it's feeling incrementally better, which is good.
[3255.63] NJ: So for the €15 or whatever it is, for a one-off license, I just think Velostrone's a really great simulator.
[3263.63] NJ: And you and I have both been in it a few times, haven't we, and just messed around in the multiplayer.
[3270.63] NJ: But you can genuinely work on freestyle stuff in there and I'm sure racing stuff.
[3276.63] Jae: The other night, because it's multiplayer on Velostrone, we had this idea of playing quad in the sim.
[3284.63] Jae: Oh, good lord.
[3286.63] Jae: Carlos Ektras, Gigawatt, and myself.
[3290.63] Jae: The whole idea is you try and pull off a move inside the environment and then get your letters and blah blah blah, all that game.
[3296.63] Jae: But it was good because you can watch the other person as they try and accomplish it and you get to learn from the other people.
[3303.63] Jae: Flying with friends, having a little competition, it doesn't have to be just a race because I think that can be a race pilot.
[3309.63] NJ: Well, I like the fact that you can switch, you can bring up the sticks, the radio sticks, finally, because that took a while to get that implemented.
[3317.63] NJ: But you can actually switch to their view, can't you, to watch what they're doing?
[3321.63] Jae: Including their stick inputs, haven't seen that actually.
[3324.63] NJ: Which is kind of cool.
[3325.63] NJ: So yeah, I'm really liking that so far.
[3329.63] NJ: I haven't tested it on the Mac to see how it runs on that yet, but I would be interested to see if it runs on the Mac.

[3361.63] Tony: I like flying the real thing and I think if I flew a sim, I'd start getting used to the sim rather than the real thing.
[3371.63] NJ: Well, the way to approach it, which is what I think is the way to approach it, and I did this when I was learning to fly 3D helicopters as well when I wanted to go to that next level.
[3382.63] NJ: Sims had just started cropping up.
[3384.63] NJ: You always want to get your simulator to fly like your real world counterpart.
[3388.63] NJ: If it doesn't, then it's not doing anything for your flying because you're always trying to minimize the variables.
[3393.63] NJ: So I always do that.
[3395.63] NJ: I know how my quad flies and I'm very particular about the way my quad copter flies, including the rates, everything about it, how snappy it is, et cetera, et cetera.
[3405.63] NJ: When I go in the sim, you tune that thing or mess around with all the different models until it feels like your quad copter.
[3412.63] NJ: And then when it does or is close to, then you can genuinely start practicing, you know, bizarre and crazy tricks and backwards stuff and whatever you want to do over and over until it's starting to work.
[3423.63] NJ: So it definitely does have a place.
[3425.63] NJ: I certainly used it the whole time when I was learning 3D heli stuff, and I've used it a fair bit to kind of get my head around the stick maneuvers for certain tricks because some of that requires some muscle memory.
[3440.63] NJ: You know, some of the tricks you see the top pilots doing, there is an element of muscle memory there.
[3445.63] NJ: And you can either go out and do it really high up with your own quad for like three minutes, or you can sit there for half an hour without a battery restriction and go over it until you're so bored of it, you can do it without thinking about it.
[3459.63] NJ: And you cut out how it works.
[3461.63] Tony: That sounds a good bit.
[3463.63] Tony: It's just the whole, is it that close to real line?
[3467.63] Tony: Yeah.
[3468.63] Jae: But let's hope they don't get too close to simulation, else, like MJ's saying, he gets real world problems in the tuning, but also you quite have just refused to fly sometimes, you'll have parts fail, it'll just not work for the rest of the day and then won't let you back into the simulator.

[3512.63] NJ: It's updated frequently as well, and those are free lifetime updates.

[3737.0] Jae: I mean, actually, I was in a valley once, and I went flying with it.
[3741.0] Jae: And I was getting this really good shot.
[3743.0] Jae: I was panning out, revealing the coastline beautifully, and I thought, this is stunning.
[3747.0] Jae: And then I realized, oh, it's been carried out to sea.
[3750.0] Jae: Oh, wait a minute.
[3751.0] Jae: I'm trying to get back.
[3752.0] Jae: So I started moving it back towards myself, and I had to put it in sport mode to get it back.

[3761.0] NJ: I had to unleash the DJI beast to get it back.
[3764.0] Jae: I had to unleash the 45 mile an hour.
[3767.0] Jae: The wind was probably 30 mile an hour.
[3769.0] Jae: I was pretty lucky.
[3770.0] NJ: Have they put one of those, like, you know, like the F-16 fighter pilots,
[3775.0] NJ: like one of the red caps over the sport mode to lift the cap?

[3786.0] Jae: One thing that highlighted to me was, sometimes, if you want to fly somewhere, go up and ask.
[3791.0] Jae: Like, there was a windsurfer down there, and I said, do you mind if I get some shots,

[3795.0] Jae: I wasn't going to fly it.
[3796.0] Jae: It was oversea, and the wind was all wrong, and I thought, no, I'm not going to risk it.
[3799.0] Jae: But there was another house where I wanted to fly off the coastline, and he says, yeah, great.
[3803.0] Jae: So often, don't be afraid to just say, can I have a fly?
[3806.0] Jae: And as long as you're a person, you'd be surprised at what people say yes to with these things.
[3812.0] Jae: And generally, if they ask any question of spying, just walk away.
