[158.72] NJ: At least three others, the one that's pressing at the minute,
[161.52] NJ: I have to get the new B Stretch-X built up.
[166.28] NJ: So I'm just waiting on some EMAX whites to arrive for that.
[169.96] NJ: And then once I've built that up and done my review on it,
[172.76] NJ: then I will be focusing a little more
[175.24] NJ: on getting that revo racer together.
[177.28] NJ: But I've been looking at some very interesting aerodynamic
[183.32] NJ: research, which leads me to think possibly
[188.36] NJ: differently about some of the aerodynamic decisions made
[191.16] NJ: on quadcopters, some fluid dynamics papers and bits
[196.44] NJ: that I've been looking at, which, yeah, I'll get to it
[200.24] NJ: when I've done some more reading.
[201.48] NJ: That sounds heavy.
[203.36] NJ: Yeah.
[204.0] NJ: It's made me go cross-eyed very, very many times.
[206.52] NJ: But can you put on spectacles and have a stick,
[209.16] Jae: maybe explaining it in a blackboard?
[211.96] Jae: And you can point to different things.
[213.56] Jae: We might not understand, but fluid dynamics.
[215.08] Jae: Yeah, don't worry.
[216.08] NJ: I don't fully understand them either,
[217.84] NJ: because they get very, very, very, very complicated.
[220.84] NJ: But yeah, it's interesting to see the airflow behavior
[224.68] NJ: around certain shapes and understanding the boundary layer,
[229.0] NJ: because air is very sticky, so viscous, like there's a fluid,
[234.4] NJ: and how laminar airflow moves around low-pressure objects
[239.2] NJ: and separates from the boundary layer
[240.64] NJ: and creates all these vortices and wake.
[242.96] NJ: And yeah, it's interesting.
[244.96] NJ: So I've been looking quite heavily into more of this.
[248.12] NJ: I understand a little bit of it anyway,
[249.96] NJ: but I've been doing a bit more in-depth reading.
[251.48] NJ: So yeah, I'll get back to that
[253.52] NJ: when I've got a less boring, long-winded version of it.
[256.6] Jae: Or is it more on the whole fact of the re-vow then
[259.2] Jae: and the aerodynamics of that?
[260.6] Jae: And is that included in the-
[262.2] NJ: It's, I could certainly highlight things on that
[266.16] NJ: and on, especially on other quadcopters,
[269.76] NJ: very, very interesting in terms of, I mean,
[274.84] NJ: that so much of quadcopters is just anti-good airflow anyway
[279.0] NJ: and it's just a giant,
[281.28] NJ: it's just forcing its way through the air.
[283.04] NJ: So there's not a lot of aerodynamic about a quadcopter
[285.8] NJ: no matter what you do with it really.
[289.0] NJ: But there are certain elements that could be put
[291.68] NJ: into designs that I think could make things, perhaps.
[295.32] NJ: And I mean, the biggest focus really is prop design
[298.56] NJ: will help them the most.
[300.92] NJ: But there is a reason why you can put a 1,300 milliamp
[304.08] NJ: 4S battery on a wing and fly it for 40 minutes
[307.08] NJ: and why you can put it on one of our quadcopters
[309.0] NJ: and get two minutes out of it.
[312.48] NJ: And aerodynamics plays a big part in that.
[314.76] NJ: So yeah, it's very, I find it all absolutely fascinating.
[318.28] Jae: Okay, well, maybe we'll have to have a little science spot
[320.68] Jae: once you've condensed it down to layman's terms
[322.72] Jae: that you might all understand.

[329.64] Jae: They get to the really nuts and bolts

[349.24] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: and sometimes I can fix it in the field with a stick.
[352.04] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: So based on that concept, my science is more practical
[356.32] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: than actually knowing what the hell I'm doing.

[365.88] Jae: which that environment itself,
[367.8] Jae: you have to tell us about it,
[368.72] Jae: but that doesn't look very forgiving for quads.
[371.76] Jae: If you crash, you're gonna have breaks
[374.24] Jae: especially when you're racing around.
[376.2] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: Yeah, and especially on a race,
[378.16] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: when you're on a race.

[384.56] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: even about the condition of the quad.

[389.76] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: in a normal day, you wouldn't keep flying.

[392.84] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: you'll try anything to get an extra lap.

[496.38] Jae: But there was one quad that stood out
[499.66] Jae: from everyone else's and it was a little quad.
[501.54] Jae: I can't remember which one it was,
[502.38] Jae: but we had a little Cartman on top of it, Eric Cartman.
[505.26] Jae: And yeah, it turns out it was yours.
[507.18] Jae: I only just found that out tonight.
[508.26] Jae: That's amazing.

[629.86] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: Drinking to taking drugs to other bad things.

[639.74] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: So this is basically the fight or flight instinct
[642.38] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: that your body has.
[643.7] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: It expels massive amounts of adrenaline.
[646.9] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: And basically there's nothing you can do about it
[649.66] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: unless you train for it.
[652.38] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: And the more you get exposed,
[653.58] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: the better you will be at managing this feeling.
[657.46] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: But yeah, listening to music seems to help a lot
[661.42] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: because obviously you want to get as abstract
[663.7] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: to your surroundings as possible.

[691.42] NJ: Yes, it's a really interesting thing that
[694.58] NJ: because I've always been a big freestyler
[698.46] NJ: and I don't really do the racing thing.
[700.02] NJ: But the last video I uploaded,
[703.14] NJ: we went and set up a track and had a go.
[705.26] NJ: And the first thing I found out,
[706.62] NJ: because I've not really been exposed to that,
[708.3] NJ: which is something you're exposed to an awful lot,
[710.74] NJ: was that my legs started to go.
[713.26] NJ: I could feel my legs going.
[714.38] NJ: I'm like, right, this is why everyone sits down
[716.98] NJ: when they race.
[718.14] NJ: Because as soon as the adrenaline kicks in
[719.86] NJ: and you're trying to beat your lap times,
[721.26] NJ: it's like, I've no control of...
[724.1] NJ: I call it Elvis leg.
[726.94] NJ: Yeah, literally just your whole body starts going,
[730.06] NJ: Christ, what is this?
[731.18] NJ: So yeah, I can see that's something,
[733.7] NJ: that's a big part of the racing thing
[735.9] NJ: is learning to control your adrenaline
[739.06] NJ: and yeah, I get it.
[741.1] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: And you can expose yourself to situations like this,
[743.94] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: even on freestyle.
[744.78] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: Like for example, if I go in freestyle
[746.58] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: in a place that I haven't been before,
[748.58] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: and it's kind of dangerous for the world.
[751.74] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: So in a place that I possibly might not know,
[754.66] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: I was exactly like over water
[756.54] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: or somewhere that you're just not confident,
[758.14] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: like a huge tower in the middle of nowhere.

[763.9] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: and your hands start shaking

[806.7] Jae: I would say, okay, my experience from last year,
[809.98] Jae: which is the drone show was my first ever official race.
[813.94] Jae: And actually flying around on 25, around hills
[816.38] Jae: and all these other things,
[817.26] Jae: swamping the frequencies and all sorts of just general,
[819.9] Jae: not the best.
[820.74] Jae: I didn't even have the best receiver setup.
[822.94] Jae: Learning to fly through static and fly that way
[826.1] Jae: is probably also a bit of training
[827.62] Jae: that I wanna do before next week.
[829.58] Jae: Cause we can have our perfect setups in our flat fields
[832.38] Jae: with no other interference, no hills
[836.46] Jae: on whatever power that was set,
[838.02] Jae: which is officially 25 and always 25.

[842.78] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: But races today have really improved more.
[844.7] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: Like for example, I've been racing on UKDS,
[847.58] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: as you mentioned earlier.
[849.5] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: And you'd think because it's indoor
[854.02] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: and there's a lot of concrete through,
[855.74] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: it's gonna be terrible.
[856.62] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: And a lot of metal structures through
[858.02] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: is gonna be terrible.
[859.18] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: But actually, most people have perfect signal
[864.22] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: because today also there's new components that help.
[868.9] Jae: Hmm, yeah, the newer VTX things, yeah.
[872.3] Jae: Yeah, cause I mean, I've seen a few of the,
[873.7] Jae: just the straight FPV feeds from there.
[875.98] Jae: Okay, there's glitches as you expect,
[877.42] NJ: but it's remarkable.
[879.34] NJ: Multi-passing is the biggest center in those environments,

[882.86] Jae: But you could protect that against on the walls, couldn't you?
[884.3] Jae: You could have dampening materials on walls
[885.98] Jae: if you did it properly, absorb radio.

[930.38] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: But yeah, there's a big space for the pilots.
[933.66] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: It's not like, you know, most races where,
[936.38] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: I don't know if you guys been to many races.

[940.98] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: but whenever the pilots get there,
[943.14] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: you have like this tiny little space to set your quads
[946.3] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: and then you have like massive amounts of people
[948.22] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: just laying everything about.
[950.46] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: And here at least they have enough space
[953.06] Carlos 'Carlito' Costa: that you can sit comfortably in a table without having-
[956.86] Jae: And do they have things like sorting items
[958.62] Jae: or if you need to make your pairs,

[2362.81] NJ: And I kept thinking, oh, I've got to review it.
[2364.25] NJ: I've got to get around to doing it,
[2365.29] NJ: because it's been sent over for me to look at.
[2367.41] NJ: And I just left it, because I thought
[2368.97] NJ: it was going to be pretty rubbish.
[2370.49] NJ: And still, to this day, it is the most fun flying machine.
[2374.81] NJ: And I mean fun.
[2375.89] NJ: It's not the fastest.
[2376.77] NJ: It's not the most powerful.
[2378.13] NJ: But it is so much fun.
[2379.77] NJ: And you can freestyle in the tiniest gaps
[2382.69] NJ: and have such a blast with it.

[2384.89] NJ: So, yeah, 130s, I think they're really coming into their own.
[2389.53] Jae: When you were building that that night
[2390.93] Jae: and bending the wires around the arms,
[2392.69] Jae: because they wouldn't fit in a certain way,
[2394.89] Jae: I never thought it'd actually be a stay-up for you.
[2397.93] NJ: No, it's such a pig to build, because they're just
[2400.49] NJ: so tiny to work on.
[2402.05] NJ: But because they're that bit lighter,
[2405.37] NJ: and there's such a small amount of inertia in the quad
[2407.89] NJ: when it hits stuff, nothing breaks.
[2409.81] NJ: Props don't break.
[2411.37] NJ: The antenna doesn't break.
[2412.93] NJ: It just sort of bounces off whatever it hits.
[2414.85] NJ: And then you just pick it up and fly again.
[2417.49] NJ: There's an argument, I think, for everyone to own a 130.
[2421.29] NJ: I can't explain it until you get one, build it, and fly it.
[2423.97] NJ: And then you'll come back and say, yeah, you're absolutely
[2425.81] NJ: right.
[2426.33] NJ: It's a total fun machine.
[2427.53] Jae: It's also like there's a dead tree where we fly.
[2430.73] Jae: And it's on its side.
[2432.05] Jae: So there's lots of gaps and things to fly through.
[2434.17] Jae: And you can do it with a big one.
[2435.45] Jae: But you can't be as adventurous.
[2437.29] Jae: And also, you don't want to break as much.
[2439.09] Jae: So actually, they truly have their right.
[2442.37] NJ: The other thing, I think, as well that's
[2444.25] NJ: good about the 130s, like the one that I've been playing
[2448.57] NJ: with, is because they don't quite have the same bottom end
[2452.13] NJ: grunt that a 5-inch propeller will have,
[2454.61] NJ: you have to be a lot better with your throttle management.
[2458.33] NJ: And that's a really good thing to learn as a pilot anyway.
[2461.49] NJ: So when you're coming out the bottom of power loops,
[2463.49] NJ: you can't just brute force your way out of it.
[2465.81] NJ: Because the prop size just won't give you the grunt.
[2469.25] NJ: How much KV you're running, it will sink.
[2472.77] NJ: So you really have to smooth out and work
[2474.97] NJ: on your throttle maneuvers.
[2476.13] NJ: And it makes you a better pilot, I think.
[2478.65] NJ: And there's a lot of pluses to it.
[2482.09] NJ: Yeah, big fan.
