Oh [21.73] Tony: Welcome to let's write it out and Jack made a boobie. I [25.57] Jack: Forgot it's because I got a laptop out here. So yeah, what I [30.77] Jack: Forgot I'm running two computers. I don't like this. But yeah anyway [35.65] Jack: Yeah today we're joined by [38.65] Jack: Next to Tony is Richard Hartley. Hello. How you doing? And Andy? I see when we get to him. He will then ask rich who he is [47.93] Jack: We are joined by the boy band member Chris. Hello. I didn't realize I was the boy band member [57.25] Chris Weller: Boy bands look at this. I know I know [60.81] Chris Weller: Make a great pop [62.85] Jack: drone group [64.69] Jack: The one the media like sort of like, you know, sort of conveys to see whether me and Tony are in a homosexual relationship [81.21] Jack: Told you gave Tony hashtag [83.25] Jack: Anyway, I would do it once again with Andy RC because he loved him so much we go back again [88.93] Andy: Thanks very much [91.93] Jack: As you were Andy RC, please feel free to ask Richard Hartley who he is [99.73] Andy: You know, I feel I feel really bad but because I spend like all of my time making videos and this is this is awful [105.77] Andy: I very rarely have a chance to sort of check out all the things [109.69] Andy: So I have to say in that respects that I'm not up on you know [114.41] Andy: All the channels and things like that. So I have to apologize to Richard. No, you don't know you don't know [119.93] Jack: Should I should I should I smooth the awkwardness or should I let you know? [127.57] Richard Hartley: Do you want right say when so so basically I'm an I I [134.09] Richard Hartley: Am nobody in this in this in this sport much now [141.05] Richard Hartley: For me to say that is because the sport has moved on a lot [147.29] Richard Hartley: But then again, you could say that I was one of the the first sort of like early pioneers of this as well [154.53] Richard Hartley: so so if you go back to [158.17] Richard Hartley: 2013 2012 time when I first started flying drones and I was flying a 700 mil hex at ground level [165.37] Richard Hartley: and over the hedges about you know two foot up and then I bought a blackout and then [170.65] Richard Hartley: sort of the likes of [173.01] Richard Hartley: Sort of like just 70 and riser out in the in in [178.01] Richard Hartley: Australia people like that when they were making these pioneering videos [182.29] Richard Hartley: Me and me and like Luke Bannister. We used to just chat and I am when he first started as well [187.01] Richard Hartley: We all start together [188.61] Richard Hartley: But as these things happen, you know people's lives take different journeys [192.53] Richard Hartley: Don't they some people get all the time in the world to practice and others just don't but yeah [197.29] Richard Hartley: So so I won the first Brighton [199.69] Richard Hartley: Was it the international drone day at Brighton racing Tony cake with his with his mark one? [206.25] Richard Hartley: vortex that he had at the time [208.85] Richard Hartley: Guy from an immersion RC by the way that that is mr. Immersion RC, isn't it basically Tony? Yeah. Yeah [216.09] Richard Hartley: and then sort of at that time I was racing a [221.25] Richard Hartley: Quad that well, no one else I had a quad like that to be fair [225.53] Richard Hartley: I came with this sort of five inch minion running [229.81] Richard Hartley: Cobra [231.17] Richard Hartley: 2300 and and and bullnose props and no one any no one had anything like it and for quite a while nobody really did I [237.97] Jack: Was always up against you with a wooden clock my quarter [243.01] Richard Hartley: Tree. Yeah, so so so at one point so so when I so when I open this I said, you know [249.33] Richard Hartley: Now it's moved on so massively [250.73] Richard Hartley: I wouldn't expect so many people to have you know half a clue who I was or whatever [255.85] Richard Hartley: But that's just the funniest thing about this because even some of the guys that that I used to massively respect back [261.25] Richard Hartley: Then they've moved out of it out of this as well where people have moved in [265.53] Richard Hartley: And the thing is it makes me laugh is is the way the technology's gone round [269.85] Richard Hartley: I mean, did I giggle when when I start see seeing people use soft mounts and things? I mean, it's hilarious [277.49] Richard Hartley: Absolutely hilarious because you know [279.57] Richard Hartley: We've gone through the whole phase of having to mount stuff on foam and putting motors on bobbins and also trying to get rid of [284.73] Richard Hartley: The jello in your in your old mark two and mark three hero cams [289.41] Richard Hartley: And then it all got a bit better and people caught up and I started [293.77] Richard Hartley: actually adjusting the code to to get the [298.09] Richard Hartley: To get the the quads to run smoothly and you're you know [301.17] Richard Hartley: You're eking this out of the band at the the bands in the middle to get rid of the dead band and doing everything [306.61] Richard Hartley: The way you should and then everyone goes back to just putting bits of rubber and everything. I mean, it's amazing [312.21] Andy: Yeah, so the important thing Richard is do you still fly there? So you've obviously yeah [317.13] Richard Hartley: No, obviously I fly for pleasure now [319.25] Richard Hartley: I mean, I've still got I've got a about three maybe three or four quads kicking around a couple of four inch couple of five [326.61] Richard Hartley: Occasionally I threatened to build a new one. I still do fly. I'll still I'll still happily shoot a gap [331.81] Richard Hartley: That's only a foot wide, you know [333.49] Richard Hartley: I laughed the other day at Matt Evans because he was he had these big new circular gates to go around with it with it [340.69] Richard Hartley: With the the fabric around the outside [344.13] Richard Hartley: They were about four or five foot round [347.49] Andy: Lesser something like that is it is the mate I've seen lesser is it? [350.93] Richard Hartley: Yeah, I think I'll be right and so I posted on the feed this three foot hula hoop on the top of a of a [357.17] Richard Hartley: On the top of a wooden stake with with a 3d printed mount and I was shooting through [362.53] Richard Hartley: Three foot hula hoops what in 2014 time? It's amazing how it just all goes around [367.73] Richard Hartley: Yeah, yeah, it is weird. So guys, I mean, what's it like now? I mean, what do you how do you feel the sports? [374.29] Richard Hartley: How do you feel the sport is now? [376.85] Andy: I think it's just [378.21] Andy: Moving so fast like this week [380.85] Andy: It's been i've had like kind of a frustrating week because i've been checking out new tech [386.05] Andy: So this week i've been checking out 32-bit escs [390.05] Andy: Which is a fairly new thing and it was it was quite a steep learning curve because 32-bit escs [397.25] Andy: they require a [399.41] Andy: New version of bl heli suite. So it's not built into the configurator [404.21] Andy: and you also need [406.29] Andy: A beta version of the beta flight configurator. So not a not an official version of the beta flight configurator [413.49] Andy: so I had to install that [416.13] Andy: and [417.33] Andy: also a [418.85] Andy: unofficial version of beta flight as well and there's different like I think we're coming up to version 3.2 now and [425.57] Andy: There's a few different versions of version 3.2. So this week [430.21] Andy: Yeah for me, I think um as someone who has like a youtube channel and tries to keep up with the latest [436.29] Andy: I find it so difficult because you know on a week by week basis i'm i'm out of date with what i've learned, you know [443.41] Andy: so for me [445.41] Richard Hartley: This is one of the exact reasons why why I ebbed away from from the sport because it's a geek sport [452.29] Richard Hartley: You've got to be literally talking to somebody who's on the the cutting edge [457.25] Richard Hartley: Every week to find out what the latest fix is for the latest thing that's broken [461.89] Richard Hartley: You know, I mean I occasionally I am sort of matt evans and and other people if I really need help [467.65] Richard Hartley: You know or brett or somebody else if I need to help on something and they'll come back with an answer immediately and to them [473.89] Richard Hartley: It's like that. They they knew what was going on like two days ago, which seems out of date, you know [478.53] Richard Hartley: and and I can't I [480.37] Richard Hartley: as an average chap that that has a [482.45] Richard Hartley: I mean i've got an aerospace business that I work with and and I cannot keep up with that rate of change [488.05] Richard Hartley: It's just not possible. So that's one of the reasons why why you sort of ebb away from being around the cutting edge [493.89] Richard Hartley: Even if you are a bit of a geek, you know, and you're an aerospace type person. Anyway, you still can't keep up [499.33] Andy: Yeah, one of the things that I noticed as well is that I went to western park recently [503.81] Andy: We talked about it on the last podcast and met jack and there was a lot of amazing pilots there [510.21] Andy: And I personally hadn't heard of them and I think it's because they spend so much time [515.73] Andy: like flying through packs that you know that that's what they dedicate their time to is is the flying part and less of [523.81] Andy: Say uploading it to youtube and things like that. So I I [527.81] Andy: I'd love to I don't think that the sport is as popular as it could be [532.13] Andy: One thing that I was surprised about when I got to western park was how the the fpv flight line [537.41] Andy: There was what like 30 people there max and then looking at the fixed wing flight line. There's like, you know [545.87] Andy: 50 000 people so I think it's definitely got more room to grow [550.13] Andy: But yeah, it's uh, I think that the rate that the technology changes is is crazy. I'm struggling to keep up with it myself [558.53] Richard Hartley: One thing I have noticed though. I think that the [561.49] Richard Hartley: The software loads are changing on a week by week basis people are saying try this board [565.65] Richard Hartley: Try that board, but the actual [568.43] Richard Hartley: Change the incremental change is not as great as all the faf [573.81] Richard Hartley: You know that yeah, absolutely [576.05] Richard Hartley: Absolutely not worth it to be honest [578.53] Andy: I'm gonna say something really unpopular and that is [581.97] Andy: The difference between one shot one two five and be a holly 32. I cannot tell the difference [588.93] Andy: I can't and I know that's gonna upset a lot of people but you know [592.77] Andy: Um, I can't tell the difference but I appreciate the amount of work [596.85] Andy: Obviously that goes in to to get there and I think that's fantastic [601.57] Tony: It's exactly the same as chad [603.89] Tony: it says chad chad can't tell the difference between all the [607.73] Andy: 32 the multi-shot one shot. Yeah f1 or f4. I mean maybe i'm just not a good enough pilot, but I [616.05] Tony: You know, he's a terrific pilot and he says he can't tell the difference. So [621.01] Tony: Is it really going to be worth having the 32-bit eses? I mean kiss already got them, aren't they? [627.41] Andy: Well, I i've been i've been flying them today and i've been having issues with them [631.97] Andy: And that's why i've had an awful week just because i'm trying to troubleshoot. I don't I basically [637.01] Andy: Done a build this week with a load of new tech. So um new flight controllers. So the kakuta f4 [643.33] Andy: it's got a soft mounted imu and 32-bit eses and then the new [650.69] Andy: White tops or red bottom emacs motors and [654.45] Andy: One of those components is failing and I don't know which one so uh, yeah [658.05] Andy: I haven't posted many videos this week, but uh, definitely been frustrated this week with new technology [663.41] Andy: But you know, that's part that's part of having a youtube channel. I guess I spend most of my time troubleshooting them [669.65] Andy: Hopefully i'll get to the bottom of it and i'll help someone at some point [673.41] Richard Hartley: You make two really good points in that. Uh, go back a few years. Um, and [678.85] Richard Hartley: They used to be [680.53] Richard Hartley: People would would go out they'd fly some packs in the week [683.49] Richard Hartley: They'd build up a little bit of archive footage and then at the weekend [687.01] Richard Hartley: They would drop their video that they'd spent a little bit [689.25] Richard Hartley: I mean [689.49] Richard Hartley: This is why i bought a mac because I used to I used to edit down videos to music and put them up there [694.29] Richard Hartley: And that used to be like a weekly ritual [696.29] Richard Hartley: You'd put something up there either on a satin evening or a sunday evening and and see who who thought it was any good [701.41] Richard Hartley: And so people knew who people were [703.65] Richard Hartley: Yeah, and at one time you could actually gauge where you were in the worldwide community by watching other people's videos and seeing [710.45] Richard Hartley: You know what? I could have made a smaller gap. That's pretty good. I like that [713.81] Richard Hartley: I'm gonna learn that next time i'll go out there was that you know, I remember the [717.89] Richard Hartley: The first time I I put up something really lame. This might seem that the first time I put up a [723.57] Richard Hartley: uh a triple spin [725.81] Richard Hartley: I had all the sticks in the corners. I was just flipping around going in the the corners going nuts [730.53] Richard Hartley: And people talked about it for a whole evening and that it's nothing now [734.77] Richard Hartley: You know, but then when you but then when you could get a quad to actually do that back in [739.63] Richard Hartley: 2014 or whatever [741.09] Richard Hartley: Uh and hang on and not fall out the sky as well. It was an achievement now [745.17] Richard Hartley: It's not you know, because everything's so locked in it's different [748.21] Richard Hartley: But but you're so two things came out of that one you were flying you weren't spending all your time [753.57] Richard Hartley: fapping around night after night with a [756.29] Richard Hartley: Work [757.65] Richard Hartley: Yeah, and and two people were seeing other people's work [761.25] Richard Hartley: And and not a lot of people are posting. I mean I still I still do watch the forums. I don't see that many people [767.81] Richard Hartley: Uh posting videos these days not by comparison. I forget you look in uh [774.21] Jack: in the rc groups [776.53] Richard Hartley: I always look I always [778.53] Richard Hartley: I'm linked to them all, you know, but I just [781.25] Richard Hartley: I watch what comes up and you know [783.89] Jack: You should just upload a video of you in your camper van [790.13] Jack: But i've never known anyone to have [792.93] Jack: Such a nice camper van. He honestly it's like hanging out [797.41] Jack: With um, you know, uh exhibit, you know what I mean like [804.05] Andy: I love campervans. In fact, I I literally spent an entire evening looking at like pimped up campervans [811.01] Andy: Where people have liked and I look at some of them are like that's nicer than my house, you know [816.61] Chris Weller: So amazing video that's in the van life stuff that's going on at the moment. Yeah [821.73] Chris Weller: The transit vans into full out like amazing campervans. It's crazy [827.73] Jack: the best the best part is with rich was I remember at the uh [832.29] Jack: The the nationals tony broke his quads and I was like [836.29] Jack: Looking for like some some wire or something and I remember like, you know asking around [843.09] Jack: We'd scored the the new vtx for tony from bani [849.39] Jack: When it's all rich for a bit of heat shrink and some wire [852.19] Jack: And he's and I was just like yeah tony started his quad and he was just like what do you need and just [857.71] Jack: Open the back of this camper van and just stack remember that [862.67] Jack: thing of the back was [864.59] Jack: Just you know, like the really useful box empire [869.39] Jack: Just as much on campervan for like, you know storage like there's no idea shit [874.91] Jack: I think he went with a good ikea cheese grater and that was it [878.67] Jack: You know [879.79] Richard Hartley: To be fair that that's how much I used to be into it. I used to carry it [883.07] Richard Hartley: I used to carry spares for everything. I used to I used to carry everything for everything. I was I was totally there [888.35] Richard Hartley: Um, you know these guys that build three or four identical quads now [891.71] Richard Hartley: I I got the point of building two the same I never got quite the point of building four the same [896.59] Richard Hartley: But uh, but that's how how much you need to be into it [899.39] Richard Hartley: You need to have a spare for everything don't you and and uh, if you keep that's the other thing [903.79] Richard Hartley: If you keep changing your tech all the time [906.11] Richard Hartley: You keep ending up with random crap just hanging around [909.15] Richard Hartley: Oh, you know the odd motor spare this the odd most spare that I actually kept one motor brand for quite a while [914.59] Richard Hartley: I had i've got that three or four quads running [916.99] Richard Hartley: One motor brand because at least then you only carry one or two when you were covering 16 corners, you know [923.31] Chris Weller: You also get to know those components really well, don't you? [925.79] Chris Weller: Yeah, keep on trying to change things and then like all of a sudden from one week to the next you've got a completely different quads [932.19] Chris Weller: Even though you're you're flying still style still the same you're changing components. Like it's nothing [937.87] Chris Weller: Yeah, it's probably the best [940.11] Richard Hartley: I've got a really good question to ask uh, and it's been puzzling me for a while [944.83] Richard Hartley: back in the whenever [947.07] Richard Hartley: I used to think okay 4.5 bullnose five inch on a 2300 motor [953.47] Richard Hartley: Uh gave you a lot of power at the time. Okay now everybody's running [958.65] Richard Hartley: 26 28 [960.67] Richard Hartley: 3200 type motors that sort of speed not many people are down at 23 and 2100 anymore [967.31] Richard Hartley: I always thought that it was a bit of a hiding to nothing because you're just making holes in the air [974.35] Richard Hartley: With the screw that you were turning now [976.91] Richard Hartley: I know guys that work with uh, they they race those um [981.39] Richard Hartley: F I forgot what category it is, but basically the control line and they are absolutely mad keen [986.43] Richard Hartley: They know everything about props prop angles speeds of their engines and everything. It's crucial to knock a [993.15] Richard Hartley: Nth of a second off their times [995.39] Richard Hartley: We just throw the bigger motor on there the faster motor the bigger prop and i'm sure that they're just not as efficient [1002.35] Richard Hartley: Yeah [1003.71] Richard Hartley: They don't be people's got got battery lives down to like two minutes now [1008.43] Richard Hartley: Now are we is that the right thing? Is that the wrong thing? [1011.15] Richard Hartley: Are we are people just jumping on a high train have absolutely no idea what they're building [1015.87] Richard Hartley: These static load tests, you know that they do for motor power and that they they don't mean [1020.91] Richard Hartley: chip [1022.27] Richard Hartley: They don't because they're wrong [1025.63] Andy: From from from my experience, I think um, it's it's just the want of uh [1031.07] Andy: More power basically and it it doesn't matter what the cost is [1035.79] Andy: I find myself going through with with the technology at the moment that the the batteries are barely surviving, you know [1043.07] Andy: 20 cycles before yeah, i'm ready to say that they're no good anymore. And I definitely think there's a sweet spot and um [1051.47] Andy: Joshua bardwell, he did a video on the new [1054.19] Andy: Uh red bottoms the emacs one. So I think they're 2306 [1059.29] Andy: 2700 kv [1060.99] Andy: And i'm testing those at the moment [1063.23] Andy: And on a full battery the first punch out the the battery [1067.79] Andy: I mean and and this is like using a tattoo r-line battery or a graphene battery something like that on the first punch out [1074.75] Andy: I've got a voltage reading going down as low as like 13 and 12 volts. So [1081.07] Andy: um, I I definitely think there's a sweet spot for these motors and I found it to be [1087.15] Andy: I I agree with a lot of the reviews out there that the [1091.13] Andy: 2206 [1092.67] Andy: 2700 kv. I would say [1094.59] Andy: It's probably the limit is what i'm finding and even at that you can get a massive voltage sag on your batteries [1101.63] Andy: but yeah, I think um [1104.27] Andy: From from my experience of reviewing products and things people just want more [1109.47] Andy: Sometimes 4s doesn't even mean more power, you know when it comes to like kv and stuff [1114.59] Andy: But the fact that the number four is higher than three [1118.43] Jack: Is better to don't get don't get rich started because he'll start talking about the time [1123.63] Jack: He met um chi [1125.63] Jack: And you know, they were like what is this literally like shove chi in a cage and like we're examining his quad and [1132.67] Jack: Asking in questions, you know, they were like you're on forest and you're not on fire [1139.15] Jack: This is that's the thing like, you know, like [1142.83] Jack: Is a dinosaur like rich was like the caveman running away [1151.71] Richard Hartley: I'm on 4s now. I know everyone's moved to five. Yeah, I know [1155.15] Jack: Like that was it like rich was flying the minion and like beating, you know [1159.63] Jack: Beating the vortex and then like I crashed my quad and then tony's learning how to make fire from rich [1166.83] Jack: Rubbing the sticks together [1170.83] Jack: I know like i'm trying to get tony engaged guys [1174.27] Jack: Not [1178.91] Jack: He's miserable he broke his wound man like just yeah, but how badly have you broke it? I didn't even break it [1184.91] Tony: I didn't even put it together [1189.31] Jack: Wow, can people hear tony tonight? Wow [1191.79] Tony: Sorry, so so what what did you do to it tony? [1196.75] Tony: Um [1198.75] Tony: Wired the camera too short [1201.47] Tony: Um put the fc up the wrong way around put the motors in the wrong way around [1208.03] Tony: Um couldn't get the screws into the fc [1211.47] Tony: um, what else did I [1214.83] Richard Hartley: Sorry for swearing you told how to build [1217.79] Tony: I I've told I tell everyone I am the worst at building and I hate it [1223.79] Tony: And everyone was like, you know, it's a tiny wall. It just clips together [1229.63] Jack: That's not everyone that was bees on the [1232.59] Jack: Last night. I was like tony you'll be fine. It's just you know, you plug stuff in [1236.91] Tony: and uh, yeah, and I plugged it in all the wrong way around [1241.79] Andy: Can I ask a question? I I saw a very short video [1245.79] Andy: Of uh jack and tony and it looked like you're about to climb a tree [1252.43] Andy: What what happened [1254.99] Jack: See back in the day used to do those triple backflips and people would talk about that for weeks [1260.51] Jack: You get a chair stuck in a tree [1263.47] Jack: And people look like months [1266.11] Jack: months [1267.95] Jack: That's probably also i'd like to make a correction as well [1271.55] Jack: I didn't get my quad down with the stall. I threw it up the quad stayed there. So did the seat as well [1278.51] Jack: I got my cord out with the use [1280.83] Jack: Of dan upton and then dan jumped out the tree forgetting. He was like 32 or how old he is [1287.55] Jack: And hurt his foot. So he's limping around for a couple of days. I felt bad and um, and then tony just [1295.31] Jack: Meander's down there and then decided to make the little video but don't worry. I've got my revenge [1301.23] Jack: I've got the fright night of him being like dan you go in front jack stay behind me [1306.59] Jack: We went ghost hunting and I have never seen such a pussy [1311.79] Tony: He looked like he wanted to cry in that dungeon. What did I was fucking in between you and dan [1318.67] Jack: I don't know [1319.71] Jack: That's what he told him he had like a formation. Do you know what? He literally thought he was going to be dead. Honestly [1327.47] Jack: Oh man, so yeah, I got did you see any ghosts then no [1336.51] Tony: But we are gonna hit it and quit it we're gonna fly there [1342.03] Jack: Yeah, but yeah, it was just [1344.67] Jack: Oh, man, just three guys in a field till like one in the morning [1349.31] Jack: Just like looking for ghosts [1351.79] Jack: And the worst part is like i've tried to edit in my footage and I just sound like muttly me just [1358.59] Jack: just laughing like just [1360.65] Jack: quietly laughing man [1363.15] Andy: Tony so what it's a known place in britain. That's supposedly haunted or or is it's a natural light [1369.95] Jack: Yeah, it's pemmency castle. Yeah [1373.63] Jack: It's yeah, it's haunted apparently and we went there. It was good laugh. I thoroughly enjoyed it [1380.11] Jack: Like any quality time with tony and digby dan [1383.71] Jack: like digby dan made that trip happen, but um [1388.35] Jack: Just tony's just such a pussy when it comes to like ghosts and stuff. It's great [1394.67] Jack: He's so funny. And then they're like we're walking in the middle of the field and I like scream [1400.35] Jack: Like threatens to kill me. Uh, we we stuck a [1403.95] Jack: GoPro chest mount on it with like, you know, like it looks like a dildo [1408.67] Jack: So all you get from him is like i've got a strap on on and stuff like that. It's just so funny [1415.15] Jack: When are you editing that bloody video? Oh mate, I can't get through it. I just i've started editing. That's not right [1423.15] Jack: It's just pitch black me screaming at tony laughing and then tony getting angry at me [1428.67] Jack: That's all it is [1432.75] Tony: You know the camera angle was like shut like shoved up my nose it was just horrible [1438.67] Jack: Oh, mate, it was good going [1440.75] Jack: It's a new blow [1442.35] Jack: I know mate [1445.55] Jack: It was [1447.47] Tony: But yeah, we managed to get your quad out uh your your seat out of the tree [1453.55] Richard Hartley: So so I have to ask a question. Isn't it a bit obvious that if you throw your seat the tree it's going to get stuck [1458.67] Jack: No, no, it won't when you want to obviously get things going up there, isn't it? [1463.23] Jack: Yeah, yeah, exactly. I'm with chris on this one. Exactly. I would have thrown tony if I if I could have got hold of him [1471.71] Chris Weller: Guys I got a question. Do you think if it was easier more people would get into fpv? [1477.07] Chris Weller: Yes [1478.11] Chris Weller: Absolutely. Do you think that's the way that it needs to be going? [1482.83] Tony: Yes, there's like new boots already built and sold I should have bought one [1487.47] Richard Hartley: Yeah, there's there's got to be there's got to be a route [1490.35] Richard Hartley: I mean the number of people that that have come up to me in these in these past few years [1494.67] Richard Hartley: Then i've given ride alone flights too. They all love it. They all absolutely love it. I don't I don't know whether it's a cost [1500.91] Richard Hartley: put some off [1502.19] Richard Hartley: um, maybe [1503.63] Richard Hartley: When I tell them the story of what you really should buy as opposed to what you can buy, you know, because I [1509.55] Richard Hartley: I just I this whole buy buy cheap buy twice thing, you know [1513.55] Richard Hartley: I I never advise people to buy these these super cheap kits [1517.47] Richard Hartley: Um and have a and you know have a really lame ass screen and and I I always advise them to go in at a certain [1523.31] Richard Hartley: mid-level [1524.27] Richard Hartley: um to [1525.71] Richard Hartley: To get a a good a good feel out of it [1528.67] Richard Hartley: But but people do struggle to get into this hobby and to be honest with you [1532.11] Richard Hartley: I'll give you a couple of examples a friend of mine. He [1536.96] Jack: rich versus andy rc [1539.68] Jack: Sorry, andy rc is the king of like reviewing cheap shit [1552.56] Jack: Can I come on I was like andy can you come on [1557.76] Richard Hartley: This was a plan all along I was I was going to give you two examples [1561.2] Richard Hartley: Actually that are really really key to this discussion point [1564.4] Richard Hartley: And they're two friends of mine [1565.76] Richard Hartley: Well, well to my example and one of the friend there's probably I got one of the very first, uh, [1571.74] Richard Hartley: hex copters that came out from [1574.4] Richard Hartley: Black sheep, do you remember that little that horrible little black thing with with green props? [1579.2] Richard Hartley: Yeah, when the props like tilted I think I yeah, that's the one whatever it was called [1583.76] Richard Hartley: I got one. I was I was literally first adopter. I had it really really early [1588.56] Richard Hartley: Even at that point when I was building quads for fun building for friends doing everything it was a fast [1596.08] Richard Hartley: Gemini it was a fact again. It linked to my tyrannis [1599.6] Richard Hartley: get it flying right and and eventually I got it hovering in my in the lounge here and it took me about [1605.92] Richard Hartley: An hour to an hour and a half to get a ready to fly quad linked to a pre [1612.96] Richard Hartley: Ready tyrannus that was working all my other quads [1615.92] Richard Hartley: Copying across an existing file for for the settings and everything to link to a d4r at the time [1622.4] Richard Hartley: But it still took me an hour and a half to get the damn thing in the air now [1626.72] Jack: Well of whenever they came out, but whenever it was two years ago, I can't believe where were you I chatted to [1634.0] Jack: To trappy and I totally forgot about the gemini. I wish that'd be my [1640.32] Jack: Trappy why was the gemini so? [1645.41] Jack: it was [1646.93] Jack: 806 [1648.21] Jack: Tiny little props that you had to get the canopy would just fly off you had to glue your own [1654.27] Jack: brackets to the canopy [1657.25] Richard Hartley: It was it was in itself [1659.25] Richard Hartley: It was a step change in the whole sort of attempt at ready to fly [1664.37] Richard Hartley: But the but the pace of the market was such that by the time it came out [1667.65] Richard Hartley: It was already out of date [1668.77] Richard Hartley: I mean, I remember kicking the arse out of the one I had [1671.89] Richard Hartley: On the the smallest lightest battery I could get and it's still I just watched you go [1676.05] Richard Hartley: Is that it? [1677.41] Richard Hartley: You know had had no no guts so it was never going to be anything competitive and like you say the arm snapped for fun [1683.57] Richard Hartley: That was so that's one example of it being damned hard work to get a ready to fly quad ready to fly [1688.93] Richard Hartley: And then just the other day a friend of mine bought a spark [1692.13] Richard Hartley: And he had a bugger's job getting it to get it into the air, you know, and that's again another off the peg [1698.53] Richard Hartley: Kind of bgi spark. Yeah [1702.05] Richard Hartley: And and he's he's been flying a while. He's built his own quads from scratch [1705.65] Richard Hartley: I've seen some of his home builds, you know, as well as as well as the sort of standard carbon race spec kind of quads [1711.09] Richard Hartley: He's built them but he got this spark and it was a faff for him to get into the air now [1715.01] Richard Hartley: If he is a as an it type person as well [1717.81] Richard Hartley: He's struggling to answer your original question. Is it too damn difficult for people to get into this? It must be [1725.09] Jack: If you basically I need to hire tony out to these people and be like here's my monkey [1732.21] Jack: If you can get him to work this and not break it in under five minutes [1739.41] Jack: You've got a winner [1741.17] Jack: Yeah, that's you know, like that's if anyone's listening to this [1744.93] Jack: It's only is available for hire [1747.97] Jack: um [1749.17] Jack: because you know it is [1751.49] Jack: Like if anything was tony proof, like you know, I I was just like yeah, sure thing [1757.73] Jack: I mean, that's why I was a fan of [1759.97] Jack: Like the fossil stuff kind of things, you know [1762.05] Jack: I was just like that keeps all the stuff locked together away from tony [1767.17] Jack: If I could ban people from giving him alan keys to open it [1771.65] Jack: It would have been great [1774.13] Jack: But uh, unfortunately, no, uh, he figured out what they were called and where to get some I think he just stole mine [1781.01] Jack: That were laying around the place or they started giving them out in emacs motors. So when he bought a new motor he'd get in there [1787.25] Richard Hartley: Um, tell me what do you have to say about that? Are you still sulking over you? [1792.85] Tony: I'm sulking [1795.73] Andy: Nothing not biting at all. Can I can I just bring it back to what jack said about um [1801.57] Andy: Me being the king of reviewing cheap crap or actions of the rc world? [1807.25] Andy: Yeah, well not quite because because i've got a i've got some I I like to say if it flies i'll review it [1813.63] Andy: basically, and um [1815.41] Jack: I do know when you say fly you mean set fire to it and give it a good kicking across the field [1821.09] Andy: Does that count as fly? It's funny to say that because i've been playing with fire today with the quad cup to put there [1826.53] Andy: Anyway, that that's uh, no don't gloss over the hell [1830.21] Andy: that's [1832.21] Andy: um, no, but what what I wanted to get back on track on with is that for me the the gemini I would say that that [1839.73] Andy: That's not a cheap model [1841.89] Andy: The thing that I think is great about cheap models [1844.29] Andy: And i'm talking about the models that cost like 20 pound that you could walk into electronic store and get [1849.89] Andy: And I get asked this all the time jack you you asked me at weston park. Why do you review? [1854.77] Andy: Uh such cheap things. I think nj tech on the podcast previously [1859.41] Andy: Uh also said that and the answer is uh is simple really and and that is that it was um [1866.13] Andy: So so i've been flying a long time [1867.73] Andy: I've been flying for well since I was seven years old and i'm like 34 now [1871.65] Andy: So when I was young stuff stuff was really inaccessible, but but now [1877.49] Andy: You know you could walk into maplin and and get like a 20 quid hubson and and that's [1882.45] Andy: Actually how I got back into this. I had like a five or six year break from fixed wing because I kind of [1888.69] Andy: Uh got fed up of it in a way because the technology there was a there was a huge gap [1893.81] Andy: Like for 10 15 years where technology didn't change what's whatsoever. And then all of a sudden, you know, when um [1900.83] Andy: CCTV cameras got small enough then that gave birth to fpv [1905.17] Jack: and [1906.21] Jack: You know the nintendo way [1908.85] Andy: Well, yes, of course [1910.29] Andy: Absolutely. Yeah, but so to answer that question. I think the [1914.77] Andy: Cheap end from like what I get from my subscribers is why I think that really cheap end [1920.21] Andy: is as important as the [1922.27] Andy: extreme expensive end because I think that that's that's the path that I went on so [1927.89] Andy: Um, if if I think something is cheap and is good i'll review it [1931.73] Andy: I think uh what richard was saying though is is if you've got something that's like in the middle that's sort of like [1937.81] Andy: You know expensive kind of to some people but it's not any good and then [1943.57] Andy: Then that's when it's worth spending the extra money [1945.81] Andy: But I always say to people first if you want to get into this sort of thing just because it's how I got into it [1951.81] Andy: either try try out like a little micro or hubson h27l or whatever and [1957.49] Andy: You know, you're bound to like I've not met a single person who's had to how to go one of them [1961.57] Chris Weller: Said nah, that's not for me. That's how I started. I got a hubson [1965.49] Chris Weller: x4 or whatever it is [1967.09] Chris Weller: Yeah [1968.05] Chris Weller: Got it for my dad and he never used it [1969.65] Chris Weller: So I started playing around with it had a great time and then learn how to build a quad [1973.57] Chris Weller: So i'm totally down with I think that's uh, yeah [1977.17] Chris Weller: Noble cause you're doing there and yeah [1979.89] Jack: Yeah, I mean you are somewhat of a gifted child because you [1983.81] Jack: Like when I first met you built a quad and there was nothing really wrong with it [1987.33] Jack: Do you know what I mean? There's like a few tweaks and you were good you good to go [1992.21] Jack: You really sort of you know knocked out the path [1995.17] Jack: But also andy rc has been a bit of an influence on you [1999.41] Jack: Because he managed to get you to buy something that before the show started. He was like berating andy rc [2006.53] Chris Weller: Oh [2007.33] Chris Weller: Mate, I love it. I've got um through andy rc. I got a aurora 100, which is like a micro [2014.53] Chris Weller: brushless and [2016.13] Chris Weller: I love it. And I i've been telling i've been telling everyone that literally micro brushless are like [2023.49] Chris Weller: not the best thing since sliced bread, but like [2026.45] Chris Weller: So good, especially for people in the uk. Well, like you really have to go out your way to find somewhere like [2032.29] Chris Weller: pretty [2033.41] Chris Weller: You have to go out your way in time to find somewhere like interesting to fly because [2038.29] Chris Weller: There's only so many fields you can fly around [2040.61] Chris Weller: So when you get a small brushless and you can take it to a park or you can take it to like anywhere like [2046.93] Chris Weller: Your garden and you can have a great little time there. I think that's a great thing for the sport. I think that's [2052.29] Chris Weller: I think [2054.05] Jack: The toasted cheese sandwich of the hobby [2056.93] Jack: Do you know what I mean? You kind of forget about them and then you find the cheese toasty thing and you can you know [2061.65] Jack: You it's the travel thing and you can take them anywhere and they're nice [2066.29] Chris Weller: Yeah [2071.25] Andy: Also, I think like I think we take a lot of things for granted again [2074.53] Andy: This is just me coming from like, you know [2078.05] Andy: Trying to do this hobby in the 90s where the only option was to join an rc club [2083.89] Andy: And you know [2084.85] Andy: You'd be flying a big nitro plane because that's the only platform that could carry all the gear that had enough power [2091.73] Andy: and I think if [2093.97] Andy: If when I was seven years old someone would have presented me with like a 20 quid [2099.23] Andy: Hubson model i'd have thrown 200 pound at it because you know back then it would have been witchcraft that sort of thing [2106.61] Andy: you know, so I think I think I come from like [2110.61] Andy: Such a time when like I can appreciate stuff and a lot of people like i'll review something [2116.85] Andy: like [2117.73] Andy: You know that this looks really cheap and tacky but it flies and that still amazes me compared to what I could do 20 years ago [2124.93] Andy: So I think i'm a little biased towards these cheap things [2128.61] Andy: Because like it's it's you know, so accessible where it's years ago. I can remember when I was younger [2135.57] Andy: I would [2136.61] Andy: try try make fixed-wing planes out of bits of cardboard and i'd like take i'd like break electronics apart and try and put [2144.61] Andy: Motors in it and stuff and the you know [2147.17] Andy: We the the technology just wasn't there and they never fly and now you can spend like [2152.93] Andy: 15 quid go to like Maplin spend 15 quid and and you know [2157.41] Andy: Go to your nearest field and just throw it and it fly. So, you know, that that's another [2162.37] Andy: Hello. Yeah [2163.73] Andy: When when did you do your first fpv flight? [2167.41] Andy: first fpv flight probably [2170.05] Andy: I think oh, okay first fpv flight. So when I got back into fpv [2175.73] Andy: It was through watching [2178.29] Andy: Sorry when I got back into the hobby, it was through watching [2181.89] Andy: Yeah, I see it was through watching flight tests as i'm sure like that's the case for a lot of people [2188.93] Andy: so [2189.97] Andy: um, like when I first saw fpv I was kind of like [2194.37] Andy: I I didn't want to go for it. I thought oh, it's it's it's a new thing and you know, it's it's not really [2200.05] Andy: Rc. It's like a I was kind of scared of it at first [2203.09] Andy: So I I avoided it and what I do is I build these fixed-wing planes [2208.29] Andy: Uh that were um, they used to call them shot flyers [2211.33] Andy: I'm, not sure if they call them that anymore, but like little 3d planes and I was flying those and then I I watched [2217.25] Andy: flight test review, uh, the hubson spy hawk again bringing it back to hubson, but [2222.29] Andy: I think hubson made it very accessible like in 2012. So [2227.01] Andy: I [2228.13] Andy: From watching flight test video. I bought the hubson spy hawk, which you know, if you looked at it now, you know [2234.21] Andy: People had laughed at it, but it was just a plane with a camera. It was like a ready to fly [2239.57] Andy: That I think I think this was it for me. I I didn't know enough about the hobby [2244.83] Andy: Fpv wise to sort of understand that you need a vta actually need a camera [2249.09] Andy: So with the hubson spy hawk, I bought that and you could literally be just going [2253.89] Andy: In in a matter of minutes. I knew how to fly but I didn't know [2257.73] Andy: All of the ins and outs. So my first fbv flight [2261.49] Andy: It's called lung sure story short was the hubson spy hawk [2264.69] Andy: I then bought the h107d, which was the little tiny quadcopter because I was all about the [2271.33] Andy: The miniaturization of it because one of the reasons that I left the the nitro scene was I was worried about the safety of it [2279.09] Andy: It was uh, it you know back then like people were getting [2283.49] Andy: Killed like, you know once a year by these I think if that happened now [2287.65] Andy: It'd be all over the news book [2289.25] Andy: But back then when nitro was the only option it was quite it was quite common for people to get hurt [2295.25] Chris Weller: So when you say nitro, I mean it was like flying on [2299.09] Chris Weller: Nitro gas [2301.17] Jack: Not nitro glycerine like yeah, it's like this red stuff natural hailing is natural. Yeah [2305.81] Jack: Yeah, tony found it quite distressing because like his dinosaur friends became that fuel [2311.97] Jack: You know [2315.17] Richard Hartley: So so I i'm gonna guess then based on those particular models that use so it's about [2322.35] Richard Hartley: 2014 time uh 2015 when you when you start flying it could be [2326.77] Andy: 2012 I think it was and at the end of 2012 at the end of 2012 I bought a uh [2334.05] Andy: A little micro helicopter. I think those came first didn't they before quadcopters, uh, the the collective pitch fly ballers [2341.65] Andy: Were they called like the mcpx or something like that? Oh, yeah. Yeah, that that was that was [2347.17] Richard Hartley: That was around that sort of time frame, but obviously the the hubs and spyhawk didn't kick around till about [2353.31] Richard Hartley: 2014 at least [2355.71] Richard Hartley: I know I think [2357.07] Andy: Oh, oh it could be I thought it was earlier than I thought it was about 2012 and to 2012 the the first [2363.31] Andy: Hoops of spy I could be wrong guys [2365.95] Andy: It's a little i'm a little hazy on the timeline [2369.63] Richard Hartley: It's not really it's really just to understand where the technology was at the time when when you started flying fpv whether it was [2376.03] Richard Hartley: you know, like sort of as I said the um [2378.67] Richard Hartley: The just 70s of the world who were flying a a gowie 330x with a camera on the front that they'd got [2385.31] Richard Hartley: That they've broken out of some cctv unit, you know [2388.91] Andy: Yeah, well the first um, the first proper quadcopter that I had was a kk2 [2395.07] Andy: so [2396.19] Andy: And I think the nays 30 when I when I bought the kk2 the nays 32 [2401.23] Andy: Was just sort of coming out or or being known then so whenever that timeline was right? [2406.75] Richard Hartley: Okay [2407.23] Richard Hartley: So yeah that that makes sense because because when the nays 32 came out it was like thank god because before that there was the [2414.11] Richard Hartley: There was the the revo board and and the uh, oh [2419.23] Richard Hartley: Yeah, the cc3d and I I couldn't get those things to I was I was on [2424.99] Richard Hartley: the message [2426.67] Richard Hartley: With uh with a guy in australia every single night waiting for him to come online and we'd try and get this damn [2433.47] Richard Hartley: Blackout to fly straight and my mouth, you know [2436.83] Richard Hartley: They were a nightmare and then I put a nays in there and it was like everything just worked [2441.39] Richard Hartley: And it was it was night and day in terms of the first generations then that that was you running [2448.35] Jack: Base flight weren't it? [2450.83] Richard Hartley: Because clean flight weren't out. Oh, no, that was definitely base flight days. Yeah. Yeah early base flight days. Oh, man. That is mental [2458.51] Richard Hartley: Yeah, that's funny [2460.51] Richard Hartley: It takes me back. But uh, well on a side side window here while I was listening to that [2465.31] Richard Hartley: I was just trying to find out when [2466.99] Richard Hartley: Some of the videos that I was quoting were actually done by some of these guys out in australia [2471.39] Richard Hartley: I mean, they're just amazing when you look back at them [2473.63] Richard Hartley: They're still beautiful now because they had all this amazing scenery to play with [2477.63] Richard Hartley: You know, I mean we go to the locations. I mean he's a park ranger a little yeah [2485.31] Richard Hartley: He used to fly somersaults over these massive trees i'm thinking how the hell are you gonna ever get that back, you know, uh [2492.43] Jack: Because some of the heights and down waterfalls and that yeah, remember golden [2497.79] Richard Hartley: like [2499.31] Richard Hartley: Well golden is is top of the list on my on my window here [2503.55] Richard Hartley: Yeah in terms in terms of just beautiful [2506.35] Richard Hartley: Things to watch that were almost too picturesque to believe for the rest of us mere mortals trying to get it to fly around [2511.87] Jack: The back garden, you know, yeah, I know [2514.51] Jack: Yeah, it's just so it's real nostalgia moment this isn't it? I know [2518.91] Andy: It's funny that you'd say nostalgia, but it's like three years ago, but like three years and there's [2528.75] Richard Hartley: 10th of february 2012 is when he uploaded golden this is coming to the man who can't remember when a spyhawk came out [2541.39] Jack: We have google and we like guys in the pub no, you're not allowed to google it i'm sure [2546.59] Jack: I'll try to Duran Duran who sung that [2550.35] Jack: Yeah [2553.95] Jack: Oh, no back from hunting a field for a lost gopro. I use tony and his metal detector [2560.75] Andy: Oh, that's a good idea a metal detector. I know I once spent two and a half hours looking for a gopro [2566.59] Andy: It was awful [2568.35] Andy: and now I use fluorescent cases because uh [2572.19] Andy: You can find so much easier with fluorescent cases [2576.51] Richard Hartley: So so andy was right the hubs and spyhawk was flight test reviewed on the 7th of september 2012 [2583.23] Richard Hartley: Yeah, I thought I was right [2587.23] Andy: Gotta admit [2589.47] Andy: He's like [2590.59] Andy: Right man and shit, man. I just I just remember it was uh, uh, yeah [2595.47] Andy: I remember it was it was a busy time for me [2597.63] Andy: I actually one of the reasons uh, I got back into the hobby was like to to relieve stress from work [2604.43] Andy: And I remember around 2012 [2610.67] Richard Hartley: And he's just told us about a week of being miserable and burning stuff up [2614.35] Richard Hartley: Yeah, you know, it's all [2615.55] Jack: A new health diet. It's called the Atkins diet [2619.15] Jack: I can eat a whole pound of bacon, but I can't have an apple because that's got five [2625.79] Jack: Oh, no [2628.11] Richard Hartley: Oh don't say that in front of tony anyway, he'll upset him [2631.39] Jack: Yeah, well i'm no i'm not i'm not promoting the Atkins diet i'm you know, putting it down [2637.95] Richard Hartley: Yeah, we only know [2639.71] Richard Hartley: Are you still there? [2642.35] Tony: Tony here [2644.35] Tony: I'm following it nice. Just listening [2647.63] Jack: Is it cheering you up a little bit? [2650.27] Tony: Um [2651.47] Tony: Yeah, but [2652.91] Andy: Oh [2654.67] Andy: Tony if it helps right? I did a build this this week [2658.83] Andy: I spent two days doing it [2660.91] Andy: And this is this new record for me [2664.11] Andy: I did the fpv flight and it flew for eight seconds before I put it in and [2670.27] Andy: The frame completely broke. I had like an arm break and [2674.83] Andy: So I think that would like I spent two days [2677.95] Andy: Eight seconds light I feel a bit better now. It was absolutely awful [2682.35] Andy: But but you know what though that happens more often than the good times [2686.83] Andy: I'm finding especially with this new technology, but when you do get it when you do get it working. It's like it's like you've you know [2695.15] Andy: Completed the puzzle kind of thing. So [2697.63] Andy: I tend to find that if I have a crap day of building like just put it down [2701.31] Andy: Just forget about it and then a couple of days it'd be just like one thing will just click and you'll love it again [2707.71] Tony: Yeah, I totally agree [2709.39] Tony: But I won't put i'll put it down [2711.95] Tony: In my car seat and drive it to dan upton in brighton and say please mend that yeah [2718.03] Tony: You can't look back. I just like I really just hate like I don't know what it is, but I just can't stand [2726.33] Tony: Repairing building or anything all I want to do is fly and if I crash it and it breaks [2731.79] Tony: I just want to give it to someone to fix like take it down like your car [2737.23] Tony: You know you just want to [2739.31] Tony: drive it if it breaks you take it to someone who knows who fixes it fix that pay some money get it back and then [2746.59] Chris Weller: We're probably only about like four years away from that [2750.27] Jack: tony's friends with me and dan [2752.67] Jack: tony's got that don't give me [2756.43] Tony: So just how about that and I use it to my advantage and I thank you very much [2760.75] Tony: If I didn't have all these friends in fpv. I don't know where i'd be right now [2764.91] Jack: equally like [2767.15] Jack: As soon as we lose something we're like tony, can you find this [2770.75] Jack: And the good not only has tony got the the the stick for getting stuff out of trees [2776.59] Jack: And then that's the metal findy stick the metal detector [2781.47] Jack: But like he's also like his little jack russels. I don't know whether he spends too much time with them [2788.11] Jack: or [2789.15] Jack: He is just one because of his size [2791.95] Jack: but he um [2794.27] Jack: Dog with the bone won't let go if you've lost something. He wants to know where it is. He needs to know [2800.43] Jack: He's just like [2804.83] Jack: Like is it he is as if like, you know, like the president has sent him down [2811.15] Jack: Tony you're gonna go to prison if you don't find this like it's literally like life or death. I've never [2818.43] Tony: It's my only way of paying you guys back for all the shit you put up with with me breaking stuff [2824.83] Tony: my mission is [2826.43] Tony: Call me [2827.79] Tony: When you've put stuff in or you've lost something. I will find it. That's the only thing i'm all right at [2834.19] Richard Hartley: So tony i'm gonna make you feel i'm gonna make you feel better now tony [2837.15] Richard Hartley: And i'm just gonna beat andy's eight seconds that he just had right. Okay this quad. Okay, this one here little four inch mini beast [2845.93] Richard Hartley: Beautifully built perfectly clean. Why is it perfectly lovely? [2849.95] Richard Hartley: because the board in there [2852.83] Richard Hartley: Was working [2854.91] Richard Hartley: and then I I went on uh [2858.35] Richard Hartley: clean flight to [2859.95] Richard Hartley: to update the the firmware settings just to [2863.87] Richard Hartley: What did I want to do? All I wanted to do was was uh baseline all the motors and and calibrate all the scs [2869.15] Richard Hartley: That's all I wanted to do and I picked the day [2872.27] Richard Hartley: when [2873.23] Richard Hartley: Everybody had to move to the new version of base flight and the old one didn't work anything and and they told you to [2880.67] Richard Hartley: Reflash all your firmware and start over again and I bricked the board and I was so angry [2886.51] Richard Hartley: The fact that that I had an almost working quad that all I wanted to do was was calibrate the motors that I have not [2892.27] Richard Hartley: Flown it since i've not finished it. I've just left it sat there. So tony. I feel your pain [2897.55] Jack: Okay, you didn't have to upload you just download the old version and load it up in developer mode [2903.71] Jack: That's always like payments. 360's got a video on it. You don't have to I I know that now [2909.07] Richard Hartley: But at the time it was one of those stupid moments like we talked about earlier where everybody knew apart from me [2917.87] Richard Hartley: And so I so I didn't know that and I was there and I was in the evening [2920.75] Richard Hartley: I really had an hour spare. I wanted to get it flying following day [2924.67] Richard Hartley: Uh, and so so I ended up bricking the board and I just thought it's just not me [2929.71] Jack: I should banish you to um, you know 30 weeks of uh, let's drone out community service where you [2939.71] Richard Hartley: You now know [2949.47] Richard Hartley: The judge gave me a choice community service at drone out or go to prison actually [2954.35] Jack: I'll tell you what if we ever do do a series on a shirt i'm gonna put [2960.43] Jack: um [2961.79] Jack: In hell they play let's show now all day [2965.23] Tony: Put on the t-shirts, I'd rather go to prison [2971.95] Jack: That's what we should have on the back of the ldo t-shirt, you know what i'm sick of saying people like what's the show about and [2978.59] Jack: I'm like, well, I argue tony. He thinks the earth's flat and we talk about bollocks [2986.67] Jack: It's nothing it's like having a pointless job, you know, like what's your job and you know, you're a traffic porter, you know [2993.87] Jack: It's just like [2997.31] Richard Hartley: So who's flying where this weekend what's going on this weekend i'm getting older it's raining apparently [3006.11] Tony: There's a uh, there's a fpv event i would have liked to have gone to um, where is it? [3012.83] Tony: Bristol is it? [3014.59] Tony: There's a there's an event there and I don't think there's anything else on i'm actually going to a tiny woop party with my [3021.71] Tony: bag of bits [3024.03] Richard Hartley: I'm sorry that actually sounds rude. I'm going to a tiny woop party [3030.59] Tony: Is that the one where you're going through your car keys in the bowl? [3038.99] Jack: Uh jay jones you just found out [3042.19] Jack: What was wrong with tony tony tiny whoop doesn't work [3046.19] Jack: tony had a better working tiny whoop [3049.47] Andy: When he started and then tony happens if you said that to anyone else or tony's tiny whoop doesn't [3056.11] Jack: Did you say that to anyone else? I didn't know what we were talking about [3060.19] Jack: There was there was a thread about things that [3063.05] Jack: fpv's fpv is get that other people don't you know, like inappropriate stuff [3069.07] Jack: Yeah, you know [3071.15] Andy: I think the worst thing would be like a website called banggood. I think [3076.03] Jack: Yeah [3078.83] Jack: You know like things that people you know would like misconstrued if they didn't know the hobby like, you know [3083.95] Jack: Oh, I need board d and uh [3086.99] Jack: You know like next to smokers like how many packs do you go through? Oh about eight a day [3091.63] Chris Weller: Yeah [3093.39] Chris Weller: What about the whole just the five inch? [3097.87] Chris Weller: I've broken i've broken my three inch again. Yeah, I know like [3102.19] Jack: I took my I took my like three inch out for a rip yesterday [3107.63] Richard Hartley: I hear that four inches baton five inch. I I was down the park and everyone was asking me about my five inch [3117.23] Jack: So i'm showing tony my five inch [3121.47] Richard Hartley: So that's about the size of it then [3125.15] Jack: I've got a work on tony's three inch in the corner. It's over there somewhere. You haven't started that yet you [3130.91] Tony: My dad [3132.27] Richard Hartley: Well, when we get off air just throw a dress and i'll send you this and you can get it working for me [3137.87] Richard Hartley: What board is it is an f1 board? [3141.55] Richard Hartley: It was a perfectly working nays 32. Yes, it's nothing's fancy, but it was at least working [3147.63] Jack: You realize that support's going to be discontinued very soon [3151.87] Richard Hartley: Yeah, i've got i've got fancy boards, uh sitting around but i'm too scared to use [3157.63] Richard Hartley: Screwed about the place [3160.59] Richard Hartley: I've got i've got one of those newfangled combinis in there somewhere and they're not that newfangled anymore. Yeah. Oh my word. I know [3170.83] Jack: Sounds like that's the the name that they uh in japan for convenience stores. They call them combinis [3177.95] Jack: Tony, why does it sound like you're making love to a little mini? [3183.07] Tony: Electric don't talk to me about anything mini any small [3187.07] Tony: Type thing [3190.43] Tony: What that yeah, what is that is my microphone rubbing against the cable is that better [3197.15] Jack: No, the little fan noise [3199.95] Jack: I can't hear anything [3202.59] Richard Hartley: Everyone got quiet [3207.9] Tony: Sounds like a whimpering dog. That's not me. Sounds like a seat. Oh mute now [3217.5] Richard Hartley: Yeah, it's yours. You're in tony [3220.62] Tony: Well, just muted. How could it be mine? [3223.02] Richard Hartley: No, it stopped when you muted it [3226.54] Tony: Shut up [3228.62] Jack: And then I could hear explosions and I realized twitch is playing in the background [3234.78] Chris Weller: Is there no one else using twitch [3236.78] Chris Weller: What's twitch? Uh, no live streamer for gaming [3240.78] Chris Weller: No, can you imagine? [3244.3] Tony: Last year i was on it on ps4 but [3247.74] Chris Weller: Do you think you think aiming fpv gamers is the right way to go? [3253.58] Jack: I don't know. Like what not console gamers at all because they don't own a pc [3259.5] Chris Weller: Well, no, but they I don't think they've got the right amount of [3262.94] Chris Weller: Attention span for it because you know when you're flying a quad and it goes down you have to spend like [3266.7] Chris Weller: You have to go and walk over to that thing to get it pick it up [3269.26] Chris Weller: I even if you've just broken a proc that's five minutes until you're flying again [3273.02] Chris Weller: Like gamers just want to be playing they die they respawn [3276.7] Chris Weller: I think that's the the mentality that gamers have and it's just [3280.22] Andy: Is this generation of like fpv is that like when when I went to western park? [3284.46] Andy: I just see so many young people and I think [3287.58] Andy: That they probably grew up gaming as well as flying and I think maybe they go more hand in hand than [3294.14] Andy: than [3295.1] Andy: We know maybe that that sort of I mean I I was i'm [3299.18] Andy: I'm terrible at flying through gates and racing because i'm terrible at video games and I definitely think [3304.62] Andy: I think there's a relation more [3306.7] Chris Weller: Like with the race or it's the it's just the fact that like kids nowadays have grown up with like [3314.38] Chris Weller: Controllers in their hands. So I uh, I got so [3317.98] Chris Weller: My friend who wanted to get into fpv. I was like, hey, that's cool. Check out [3322.38] Chris Weller: Let's put you through a simulator first because obviously like, you know, if you just give someone the sticks of a fully acro quad [3328.14] Chris Weller: It's not going to end very well on their first flight [3330.22] Chris Weller: So I was just like right, let me go and within five minutes of flying he was like totally [3336.3] Chris Weller: Used to used to the whole notion of flying it and he he comes from a very gaming background [3342.22] Chris Weller: I think that it's definitely got some [3344.3] Chris Weller: Big like parallels between the two, but I think it should be kind of [3348.06] Chris Weller: There's not enough push towards the sort of extreme sports side of it. I think it's more kind of [3353.1] Chris Weller: uh [3354.3] Chris Weller: there's more parallels between like [3356.78] Chris Weller: Riding a like a bmx or a skateboard because you have to put so much time into the effort of making a drone fly [3363.34] Chris Weller: It's the same sort of thing. It's like learning a new trick, isn't it on [3366.78] Chris Weller: You have to put hours and hours of work into learning a cake flip or something [3370.14] Chris Weller: That's the same sort of thing is, you know, yeah, you have to do the same sort of thing with gamers a very [3375.02] Richard Hartley: They're very much a user and a consumer gamers [3378.86] Richard Hartley: Handed to them on the plate for the 50 pounds that they paid for the game or whatever and then they just use it [3384.38] Richard Hartley: I think that's broken. Yeah, they're not like [3387.98] Jack: Tony like, you know falls into that category in a way [3392.86] Jack: Do you know what I mean? But he does try I don't know the thing, you know [3395.9] Jack: You're saying about gamers and their attention span and stuff just because you break a prop the fun doesn't really stop [3400.62] Jack: You know what I mean? Like you'll change a prop and then you back up again or you you know [3404.7] Jack: You get to work on your quad and [3407.26] Tony: I'm not i'll just put the prop on the wrong way and then smash it [3411.02] Jack: At least at least you tighten the props up [3414.22] Tony: Yes [3416.3] Andy: I think the fact that like some of the simulators out there are on steam [3420.38] Andy: I I get I get a lot of questions because i've reviewed liftoff and velocity drone [3427.1] Andy: And simulators like that. I do actually see a lot of requests saying how do I set up an xbox controller for this? [3432.7] Andy: So I do think that people get into it [3435.82] Andy: through their controller [3438.46] Andy: I'm sorry [3439.82] Andy: Well, well, that's that's just it isn't it? [3441.74] Andy: I mean an xbox controller just doesn't have the dexterity of a proper transmitter [3447.58] Chris Weller: but I think the thing is you can buy really like i've got um [3451.58] Chris Weller: The tenerg evolution and that's got like a micro usb on the side and it's like what? [3457.32] Chris Weller: 60 70 quid and it comes with the receiver, you know [3459.74] Chris Weller: So if you're gonna start fpv you might as well start buying a handset and then start [3464.54] Chris Weller: I think that's the best way to get into it [3467.5] Andy: I think there's a relation there. Absolutely [3469.42] Andy: My my only issue with people coming into the hobby that way is it's always I guess because like i'm old fashioned or whatever [3476.7] Andy: But I always think you should learn to fly line of sight [3479.82] Andy: Before you can fly fpv because at the end of the day if your fpv quits out [3485.1] Andy: All you've got is line of sight [3486.86] Andy: So I think that that's the danger of people coming from the gaming world is that you know [3491.82] Andy: They may be the quickest around a track or whatever, but it's you know, line of sight or whatever you you've got your orientation [3499.1] Andy: All sorts of things like that. So that's something i'd be concerned with if [3503.02] Andy: If it became popular through gaming rather than you know, just flying. That's me. Yeah the question then [3509.42] Tony: I can't [3512.14] Richard Hartley: That's really made me laugh now because I put my foot in it [3517.26] Richard Hartley: The first western park event [3519.42] Richard Hartley: Uh the first time they ran the fpv event at western park [3523.18] Richard Hartley: We were only allowed to fly there if we passed a very very rudimentary test [3528.54] Richard Hartley: Uh where we had to hover a quad in front of us fly it to the left flight [3532.3] Richard Hartley: It was like a reduced version of the current a test [3538.06] Richard Hartley: And everybody had to do that the first year we did it I think they just scrapped that after a while [3543.82] Jack: I don't know [3545.82] Jack: I can fly line of sight a little bit [3547.9] Jack: I used to be able to fly line of sight really well [3550.54] Jack: And then I lost the quad flying a mini quad that's tiny [3555.34] Jack: And I flew it too far out and I just couldn't see it [3557.9] Chris Weller: Do you know what I mean? It was that's also the problem [3559.58] Chris Weller: Like if you lose feed and you take off your goggles, how are you going to know when it's like the trans out? [3566.38] Richard Hartley: You will have a spotter won't you because you're all legit [3569.66] Richard Hartley: Of course [3571.66] Jack: It's over there and you're still having the transition it's so jarring [3578.14] Andy: You're right. You're right. In fact when I first [3581.18] Andy: When I first started fpv, I actually did it through a monitor for a long time because because I was worried about that issue [3588.14] Andy: And uh, yeah [3589.98] Jack: Disarm and down and that's what you can do. Do you know what I mean? It's too [3594.38] Jack: too jarring or you fpv [3597.58] Jack: Into [3598.94] Jack: Sacrificially into do you know what I mean? All there's something there. I'll fly my quad into a bush to [3605.18] Richard Hartley: Save whatever you see that that's just weird Jack that is because I mean when I when i've lost [3610.94] Richard Hartley: uh [3612.54] Richard Hartley: In the early days, I lost connectivity on a on a blackout. Obviously, that's just a a 230 size 250 size quad [3619.5] Richard Hartley: Um, and it was well over a hundred meters away [3622.78] Richard Hartley: And and I actually flew it back line of sight from there [3626.14] Richard Hartley: By by basic, but that's when I I still had stability mode, uh as one of my flick switches [3631.74] Richard Hartley: Yeah, now I don't you know, now you just everyone runs aqua [3634.06] Richard Hartley: But I had aqua and I had stability fixed it to stability [3637.02] Richard Hartley: So it got chance to sit there and hover looks at it [3639.9] Richard Hartley: I could see it this little black dot in the distance and then I just put it full tilt forward [3644.14] Richard Hartley: To see which direction it went to the left of me to the right of me even further away or back towards me [3648.78] Richard Hartley: To work out its orientation and then from there I just twisted it around and went right [3652.62] Richard Hartley: It's kind of coming back to me though, but you can fly it back from a good distance [3656.14] Chris Weller: So if you're leveling mode on though, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah [3659.5] Andy: I've been able to do it on aqua [3661.18] Andy: One thing I will say is like I I really think that's like [3664.38] Andy: Uh a great a great part of the hobby is flying line of sight. So [3668.54] Andy: Uh for I would say that if you if you say that you can't fly line of sight or you're not interested in it [3674.62] Andy: I'd say give it a try. I I like it equally if not more than flying [3679.96] Andy: FPV and if you want to [3683.58] Andy: If you want to if you want to try it the velocid drone [3687.74] Andy: Simulator has got a line of sight view and it's so accurate. It's really accurate [3693.18] Andy: So if you want to get into that then, uh, yeah, I'd recommend it [3696.46] Andy: But I thought I thought everyone was flying line of sight. I I don't know. I can't I don't see any interest of [3702.54] Tony: A line of sight whatsoever [3704.94] Tony: Not with planes not with quads not anything [3708.38] Richard Hartley: Tony line of sight is the best way to tune a quad out to start with [3712.86] Tony: Agreed or put three one seven beta flow [3720.86] Richard Hartley: To actually sit it there in front of you and then just pump it up and watch it [3724.86] Richard Hartley: Just you see those little little vibrations and and and work out what it's doing [3730.3] Richard Hartley: See what I mean pump it up [3732.3] Jack: All those little vibrations, you know what I mean? [3737.82] Jack: Yeah [3741.18] Jack: I um speaking about earlier. I would love to see some outtakes of andy rc rage [3747.66] Jack: You know what I mean like him just being like [3751.26] Jack: Switch his bitch [3755.18] Tony: Have you got any outtakes like that andy because I like that [3758.94] Tony: That [3762.3] Andy: I've got um, it's funny that you mentioned that because i've got a fail video going up either tonight or tomorrow [3770.38] Andy: well, actually this week has has all been uh about fails, but um [3777.1] Andy: Something that I said earlier was that like I've been playing playing with fire and something that i've been messing with with a lot is uh 360 [3783.82] Andy: Cameras on quadcopters. It's uh, yeah with the little weird tv screen [3788.7] Jack: Bop your battery. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's a cool video by the way [3793.42] Andy: Right. So so i've been playing around with the 360 video. It's something i've always been interested in [3798.3] Andy: And i'm someone that like I i've always loved going to air shows [3802.22] Andy: I used to go to western part when I was younger. I I love I used to go to [3806.3] Andy: The other week what you want about? Yeah. Yeah [3809.02] Andy: Yeah, but what i'm trying to get like so so what i've attempted [3813.18] Andy: To do is fit a smoke system on a quadcopter which you know [3818.86] Andy: It's a it well, it's a recipe for disaster because you're essentially putting a firework onto a quadcopter [3825.1] Andy: And um, so i've been working [3827.1] Andy: I've been working on uh fitting like an ignition system to it so that you can set it off [3833.02] Andy: So that you can set it off in the air [3835.02] Andy: So it's not just moves about this idea [3837.34] Richard Hartley: No, no, we did we did that the other month.
