[0.0] Jack: Let's draw an hour now.
[5.41] Jack: Sorry, I better select live.
[7.01] Jack: Hello and welcome to today's Thursday the 18th of January 2018.
[17.25] Jack: Tonight we are joined by Tony.
[22.29] Jack: What's his name, Tony?
[25.33] Jack: You're not going to learn anything today.
[26.61] Jack: Drung Joshua Bardwell.
[29.41] Bardwell: I thought we were all drinking.
[31.25] Bardwell: You said make sure you bring a drink.
[33.01] Bardwell: I assumed that meant we were all going to be drinking.
[35.17] Bardwell: Apparently you just wanted me to drink.
[36.85] Jack: Apparently half of us.
[37.65] Bardwell: You're half a terrible influence.
[41.01] Jack: You haven't got anything to talk about
[42.21] Jack: because you already talked about it on the unrestricted podcast.
[46.45] Jack: You've had a podcast with Jesse.
[48.77] Jack: Yes.
[49.57] Jack: And you've live streamed three times this week.
[53.49] Tony: Where's his job now, isn't it, really?
[55.49] Jack: I think he wants to go back to his job so he can have a rest.
[60.53] Bardwell: I don't know.
[61.65] Bardwell: People say, have you finished the introductions?
[63.73] Bardwell: Is it time for me to start talking yet?
[65.41] Jack: No, no, no.
[66.13] Jack: And we're also joined by Frank.
[69.41] Jack: Tell him.
[69.73] Jack: Don't forget to contact him for drug advice.
[72.77] Jack: That makes sense.
[75.33] Jack: Sorry.
[75.81] Jack: That's all we need.
[77.81] Jack: Like to thank the Patreons.
[79.25] Jack: Our newest Patreon, Joshua Bardwell.
[80.93] Jack: Thank you very much.
[82.53] Bardwell: Thanks, Josh.
[84.29] Bardwell: Yeah, I still remember the little guys.
[87.73] Tony: They are little.
[89.01] Tony: I don't know why we're still little.
[91.01] Bardwell: Except for Jack.
[91.81] Tony: I'm sick, yes.
[93.73] Tony: No comment.
[94.37] Jack: How do you know how big I am?
[99.41] Jack: Did you trick me with one of those skirts you were wearing?
[102.93] Jack: I know where your other website is.
[107.65] Frank: Erwin Elle in the chat was straight on the chat
[111.17] Frank: as soon as I created the show for tonight.
[114.13] Frank: So hello, Erwin.
[115.73] Frank: Zero was shot on his tail.
[117.89] Frank: So hey, everyone.
[119.73] Frank: That's obviously keenly waiting.
[122.61] Frank: Had Dynamite Girl, I believe, asking him on Facebook
[125.41] Frank: if we're on tonight.
[126.45] Frank: So people are waiting for us.
[128.69] Tony: I think apparently she worked around her vets for us,
[133.01] Tony: which I thought was pretty cool.
[134.61] Tony: She had to take her dogs to the vets and work around it
[137.33] Tony: so she could get back to watch the show.
[140.13] Tony: That is commitment.
[141.65] Tony: Thank you, Dynamite Girl.
[144.29] Jack: Yeah, I bet you don't have that on your show.
[149.81] Jack: Do you know what I'd love most in the world?
[151.65] Jack: It's like at the end of one of your videos randomly,
[155.09] Jack: they're just all of a sudden plays goodbye horses
[157.73] Jack: and you're putting on lipstick and you're like,
[160.29] Jack: this is for you, Jack.
[163.33] Jack: It's not going to happen.
[164.53] Jack: It's not going to happen.
[166.69] Jack: Chocolate milk all over my laptop.
[169.25] Jack: Roll around on the floor for half an hour.
[171.41] Bardwell: I think you could make that for yourself
[173.41] Bardwell: if you really wanted to.
[174.37] Bardwell: I mean, there's a lot of footage out there of me,
[176.77] Bardwell: but none of me putting on lipstick.
[179.01] Bardwell: It's a little known fact that despite the fact
[181.81] Bardwell: that I do wear skirts sometimes and sarongs,
[184.85] Bardwell: I'm not actually a cross dresser,
[187.41] Bardwell: which is a fine distinction.
[188.53] Bardwell: Eddie Isard has some, he's one of your countrymen,
[191.33] Bardwell: has some fine words to say on that.
[192.93] Bardwell: Someone asked him in an interview once,
[194.77] Bardwell: why do you wear women's clothes?
[195.89] Bardwell: And he says, I don't wear women's clothes.
[197.33] Bardwell: They're my clothes.
[199.09] Bardwell: Yeah, and he's brilliant, he's really brilliant.
[202.13] Tony: Jack, up as a girl.
[203.97] Tony: So, you know, unless you want them flashed about, Jack,
[206.77] Tony: I should zip it.
[209.17] Tony: What?
[210.21] Jack: Yeah.
[211.57] Jack: What, photos of me?
[213.25] Tony: Yeah, dressed as a girl.
[216.61] Tony: Nice.
[218.05] Tony: Yes.
[220.85] Jack: I've got those photos, I'll put them out there.
[223.49] Jack: They're on my Facebook anyway.
[225.25] Bardwell: Right.
[226.55] Bardwell: Now, look, I was going to say during the intro,
[229.51] Bardwell: which you so rudely interrupted me,
[231.51] Bardwell: because I'm trying to get a sponsorship here.
[233.67] Bardwell: I'm trying something new.
[235.51] Bardwell: It's Monster Zero Ultra, because I was like,
[237.67] Bardwell: I know I like to drink gin,
[239.11] Bardwell: but what am I going to mix it with?
[240.71] Bardwell: Gin I'm drinking is Hendrix Gin.
[242.79] Bardwell: I don't think they're going to sponsor me,
[244.07] Bardwell: but I think I could spin this into a monster sponsorship
[247.35] Bardwell: because I know they just want to see their cans everywhere.
[250.71] Bardwell: So I'm drinking tonight Monster Zero Ultra and Gin.
[254.39] Bardwell: It's actually pretty good.
[255.67] Bardwell: If anybody out there works for Monster,
[258.07] Bardwell: I'm already buying your product.
[259.35] Bardwell: Okay, moving on.
[260.47] Bardwell: Sorry, guys.
[260.95] Bardwell: I'm using your show.
[262.31] Jack: No, it's fine.
[263.67] Jack: Everyone else does.
[266.15] Jack: Including us.
[268.31] Jack: I know a few people at Red Bull,
[270.15] Jack: but didn't flight tests manage to pull a Mountain Dew sponsorship?
[276.71] Bardwell: Mountain Dew's getting into Mini Quads.
[278.39] Bardwell: I've heard that.
[279.51] Jack: Yeah.
[280.31] Jack: So yeah, I think you just need to keep drinking it
[283.11] Jack: and buy some merchandise.
[285.19] Jack: And yeah, I think you pull it out of the bag.
[287.59] Jack: You never know.
[289.27] Bardwell: It's not bad.
[292.23] Jack: I can't drink those stuff, man.
[293.59] Jack: But yeah, isn't it like Frank?
[296.07] Jack: Isn't it like mixing cocaine and heroin though?
[299.03] Jack: Like alcohol, depression, energy drink.
[301.35] Jack: Up and downers.
[303.43] Jack: Either way, blood flows.
[305.59] Jack: That's the line, I think.
[307.83] Jack: You need to talk to Frank.
[311.03] Jack: Yeah.
[311.91] Bardwell: Josh about substance abuse.
[314.63] Bardwell: I'll tell you what, though.
[317.03] Bardwell: I know I'm the last person in the world to figure this out,
[319.27] Bardwell: but these things are no joke.
[321.43] Bardwell: Like I thought when the energy drinks got big,
[323.67] Bardwell: I kind of thought, okay, it's just like a caffeinated drink.
[325.75] Bardwell: Whatever.
[326.15] Bardwell: I drink coffee.
[327.27] Bardwell: No, these things are no freaking joke.
[330.71] Bardwell: It's like you could take some crystal meth
[333.03] Bardwell: or you could drink two of these.
[335.59] Bardwell: These are no joke.
[336.71] Bardwell: No, somebody died drinking the car.
[341.11] Bardwell: I mean, that's not funny, but really?
[344.55] Jack: Tony also knows someone who murdered his own parents.
[349.11] Jack: Was it the same person?
[352.79] Tony: No, but yes, I do.
[354.71] Jack: I'm sorry to put that out there,
[356.23] Jack: and you probably don't want to talk about it.
[358.31] Jack: No, I don't.
[359.19] Bardwell: No, we've got to talk about it, Josh.
[361.03] Bardwell: It's like when you're drunk.
[361.99] Bardwell: It is.
[362.23] Bardwell: It is.
[362.95] Jack: Graham Norton would be proud.
[365.91] Jack: Yeah, it is just...
[367.83] Jack: Every now and again, you find something out about Tony
[371.19] Jack: and you're just like, you what?
[373.99] Jack: I remember we were just driving somewhere and he was like,
[377.11] Jack: yeah, I know.
[378.39] Jack: I know, I was just like, Tony's a dark horse.
[381.91] Jack: Oh, he is.
[382.87] Jack: Very, very dark horse.
[384.95] Jack: Which I am.
[385.59] Frank: He is.
[387.11] Jack: I'm sorry to put that out there, but yeah, he's just...
[390.47] Jack: I've never quite met anyone quite like Tony.
[393.91] Jack: Oh, thanks.
[394.55] Jack: Isn't that nice?
[395.43] Tony: Yes.
[395.99] Tony: I like being individual.
[397.19] Tony: Thanks, Jack.
[399.11] Tony: Right.
[399.59] Tony: Drones, are we going to...
[401.35] Tony: How many minutes in?
[402.31] Tony: We've not mentioned anything about these flying things.
[406.31] Jack: Well, the biggest topic is didn't Joshua just release
[409.91] Jack: another video about Beater Flight 3.3 and Carmen filters
[413.11] Jack: and all that good stuff?
[416.15] Bardwell: I did.
[416.63] Bardwell: I did.
[418.63] Bardwell: People were asking me, what is this?
[420.79] Bardwell: Will you do a video about it?
[421.83] Bardwell: And I saw, unlike my normal thing where I ignore that
[425.11] Bardwell: and I make stupid videos about things no one cares about.
[427.59] Bardwell: I went ahead and I pushed it up to the top of my list
[429.83] Bardwell: and I made one and it's been really popular.
[433.67] Bardwell: Yeah, Carmen filter is a thing that...
[438.15] Bardwell: Kaelin Dorr, the main coder for a race flight,
[440.71] Bardwell: the originator of the race flight project
[442.63] Bardwell: and the sort of main coder.
[444.95] Bardwell: It's one of the things he put into race flight
[446.71] Bardwell: that's kind of like his secret sauce.
[448.71] Bardwell: It's not the only thing, but...
[450.47] Bardwell: And since he had a falling out with the race flight one,
[455.75] Bardwell: well, had a falling out with Preston Garrison.
[457.51] Bardwell: I'll try not to name names,
[458.63] Bardwell: but I have been saying that Kaelin Dorr left race flight,
[463.03] Bardwell: but his argument is that he is race flight.
[465.67] Bardwell: And so he took it with him, he would say,
[468.63] Bardwell: but he started contributing stuff to Beater Flight.
[471.43] Bardwell: Beater Flight's open source so anyone can contribute.
[474.15] Bardwell: And my impression is that a lot of the animosity,
[477.67] Bardwell: the whole, don't touch our stuff,
[480.31] Bardwell: this is our stuff attitude that came about
[482.79] Bardwell: when race flight one became a thing,
[484.71] Bardwell: it was really kind of one sided.
[486.31] Bardwell: It was all like Beater Flight can't have our stuff,
[488.23] Bardwell: but Beater Flight was never like,
[489.51] Bardwell: the devs were never like race flight, screw you.
[491.83] Bardwell: I don't know.
[492.63] Bardwell: Anyway, so when he offered this stuff
[494.31] Bardwell: to the Beater Flight project, they're like, yeah.
[496.47] Bardwell: And sure enough, it flies really good.
[499.59] Bardwell: It's really amazing.
[501.11] Bardwell: And I'm a little bit embarrassed because,
[503.51] Bardwell: how many times can you fly something and go,
[505.51] Bardwell: holy shit, this is so, it's so good.
[508.39] Bardwell: And then it just keeps happening.
[510.47] Bardwell: Every so often you fly something and you're like, whoa.
[513.59] Bardwell: So I had a video out where people can try out
[516.39] Bardwell: this new pre-release firmware and see for themselves.
[519.99] Bardwell: You know, you never know.
[521.19] Tony: It's pre-release, it's not.
[523.27] Bardwell: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[524.47] Bardwell: No, it's not even pre-release.
[526.23] Bardwell: It's, this is if you, if you, yeah,
[529.67] Bardwell: if you follow these steps,
[531.43] Bardwell: like they're pretty sure that nothing is majorly wrong with it.
[535.91] Bardwell: That the fail safe code isn't broken or anything,
[538.07] Bardwell: but it's a total, you're in dev land
[541.27] Bardwell: if you decide to try it out.
[543.27] Bardwell: And you got to be really careful and really take your,
[545.91] Bardwell: make sure you don't do anything done with it
[548.07] Bardwell: because it could go wrong, but it probably won't.
[550.63] Jack: Is it still F4 only?
[554.48] Bardwell: Well, so here's the thing.
[556.56] Bardwell: The common filter itself can run on F3.
[560.4] Bardwell: To run 32 kilohertz speed, you have to be on at least F4.
[566.48] Bardwell: F3s can't do that.
[568.64] Bardwell: And the thing is though,
[573.12] Bardwell: the advantages of this filtering still exist
[575.6] Bardwell: if you're only running at eight kilohertz.
[578.56] Bardwell: Kalen's whole thing is 32 kilohertz.
[580.8] Bardwell: That's race flight's whole thing.
[581.92] Bardwell: 32 kilohertz is awesome.
[583.84] Bardwell: And so of course, when he ports this code to beta flight,
[586.4] Bardwell: it sort of gives a kick in the pants to 32 kilohertz.
[588.96] Bardwell: But some people are saying,
[589.92] Bardwell: well, I guess F3 is dead
[591.84] Bardwell: and the devs are working really hard to,
[593.84] Bardwell: I mean, this is so pre-released that like today,
[597.04] Bardwell: some of this code might not run well on F3,
[598.96] Bardwell: but they haven't even started optimizing it yet.
[602.24] Bardwell: So F3 is, I don't think,
[604.8] Bardwell: 3.3 is not going to be the death knell for F3.
[608.08] Bardwell: Maybe, you know, 3.4, but F3 still has some life in it.
[611.36] Bardwell: I probably wouldn't buy an F3 today,
[613.36] Bardwell: but if you have one, I wouldn't throw it out.
[616.0] Jack: F4 though, knowing that it's like.
[620.24] Bardwell: So right, you know, F7,
[621.68] Bardwell: that's where we can't wait till we get past F4
[624.64] Bardwell: and onto F7s, which have inverters,
[626.96] Bardwell: and that'll be super nice.
[629.36] Frank: Is there any reason we can't do that already?
[633.12] Frank: Like with the F7s?
[634.64] Frank: I mean, they're out there.
[635.6] Bardwell: Well, it has a lot to do with marketing, I think.
[641.28] Bardwell: Why didn't manufacturers just go straight to the F7?
[644.16] Bardwell: And there are some complications with the F7 code,
[647.52] Bardwell: and I don't know what they are,
[648.48] Bardwell: but I know for now, right,
[650.4] Bardwell: if you take the code that's on the F7 now,
[652.32] Bardwell: like if you install Betaflight on an F7,
[654.4] Bardwell: it actually isn't really well optimized from what I've heard,
[657.52] Bardwell: and it runs way slower than it should.
[659.52] Bardwell: And there's something different about the F7 architecture
[662.48] Bardwell: that they need to go back into the code
[663.92] Bardwell: and I don't know, tweak some things.
[665.84] Bardwell: So it may be that the F4 was just a friendly architecture
[669.84] Bardwell: to code for or to port to.
[671.92] Bardwell: Or it may just be that marketers like going sequentially F3, F4, F7.
[675.68] Bardwell: Why should we skip the F4s?
[677.2] Bardwell: I don't know.
[678.48] Bardwell: Hmm.
[679.6] Jack: Because I heard like the development boards
[681.44] Jack: were a nightmare to get hold of.
[683.36] Jack: A lot of people had to make their own
[685.6] Jack: and they just weren't quite ready yet.
[688.64] Jack: That's what I heard from Mr. Clean Flight anyway.
[692.48] Bardwell: Yeah, well, he would know.
[695.52] Frank: He would know.
[696.64] Frank: We did have some questions in the chat building up
[700.24] Frank: before we came live.
[702.8] Tony: Can I ask one quick?
[704.32] Frank: Go for it.
[705.68] Tony: If you're running 32 kilohertz,
[711.2] Tony: let me try to work.
[713.28] Tony: Let me brain work this out.
[714.72] Jack: Whoa, no way.
[715.76] Jack: Tony's math.
[718.32] Tony: I'm just trying to think how to say it.
[721.44] Tony: If it runs that fast, can you get...
[726.48] Tony: Well, can I say it?
[727.84] Tony: Can you beat the speed of light?
[729.68] Tony: No, can it let through bad stuff?
[735.76] Jack: Are you listening?
[736.8] Tony: Noise.
[737.28] Tony: You know what I mean, yes.
[739.68] Bardwell: So you're on something there.
[743.28] Bardwell: And I'm not an expert on the gyro chips and all.
[747.52] Bardwell: As much as I kind of pretend to be one,
[749.2] Bardwell: I'm just kind of filtering through little bits
[752.08] Bardwell: of information that I pick up.
[753.76] Bardwell: But I believe that what you're getting at is true
[755.92] Bardwell: that when you go to the 32 kilohertz sampling,
[758.4] Bardwell: you do increase the noise floor that the gyro picks up.
[761.52] Bardwell: So essentially, it picks up more signal
[764.24] Bardwell: but also more noise.
[766.0] Bardwell: And that's why if on beta flight 3.2,
[769.92] Bardwell: and before, if you activate that 32 kilohertz mode
[773.2] Bardwell: in the configuration tab, which you can do,
[775.44] Bardwell: and then you run it at 32 kilohertz gyro sampling rate,
[778.72] Bardwell: at least half of the people I would guess, maybe more,
[781.28] Bardwell: their quad just flies terrible.
[782.96] Bardwell: It'll jitter.
[784.4] Bardwell: The motors will sound terrible.
[786.0] Bardwell: Sometimes it'll go blah, blah, blah,
[787.28] Bardwell: try to fly to the moon.
[788.64] Bardwell: And it just is a mess.
[790.0] Bardwell: And they're like, what's the point?
[791.44] Bardwell: And you have to have the code optimized
[793.84] Bardwell: to run at that speed.
[794.96] Bardwell: And the filtering is a big part of it.
[797.44] Bardwell: The filtering lets the good data through
[799.04] Bardwell: and rejects the noise.
[801.28] Bardwell: I think there's an even better argument to be made,
[803.76] Bardwell: a more interesting argument to be made,
[805.36] Bardwell: which goes back to what Jack said about aliasing,
[809.28] Bardwell: which is that the higher the frequency at which you sample,
[813.12] Bardwell: the higher there's a thing called the Nyquist limit,
[815.2] Bardwell: which means that if you're any frequencies
[819.84] Bardwell: that are more than half your sampling rate
[822.32] Bardwell: are going to experience a form of distortion called aliasing.
[826.16] Bardwell: And so what you can do is you can say,
[828.56] Bardwell: if I've got a band limited signal like a CD,
[831.52] Bardwell: it tops out, I think it's 22 kilohertz.
[833.36] Bardwell: And that's why CDs sample at 44 kilohertz.
[837.2] Bardwell: So if you say 22 kilohertz is the highest frequency sound
[840.32] Bardwell: that I care about capturing, there's nothing above there.
[843.04] Bardwell: We sample at 44 kilohertz and you're good.
[845.92] Bardwell: So with 32 kilohertz sampling on the gyro,
[848.56] Bardwell: then in theory, 16 kilohertz is where our Nyquist limit is at.
[851.52] Bardwell: But if you look at a black box file,
[854.32] Bardwell: you'll see that there is almost no signal energy above,
[858.88] Bardwell: say, one or maybe two kilohertz.
[861.12] Bardwell: Most of it's down around 500 hertz.
[862.96] Bardwell: That's where the prop noise is.
[865.04] Bardwell: And so there is an argument, I think,
[866.72] Bardwell: to be made of what are you getting
[868.16] Bardwell: when you sample at that faster rate?
[870.16] Bardwell: Because increasing the Nyquist limit,
[871.84] Bardwell: you're just getting more and more noise.
[873.36] Bardwell: It's just there's nothing up there in those frequencies
[876.08] Bardwell: that you're sampling more accurately.
[877.6] Bardwell: But then you have guys like Caelan Doerr,
[879.76] Bardwell: who are really smart guys and know what they're talking about,
[881.76] Bardwell: saying, no, seriously, there's a good reason to do this.
[884.4] Bardwell: And I just have to conclude,
[885.52] Bardwell: I'm not smart enough to understand it yet.
[887.2] Frank: I think generally the idea is that if you double the sample rate,
[891.68] Frank: you can technically get that frequency
[894.64] Frank: because you'll have up, down, up, down,
[897.84] Frank: top of the signal, bottom of the signal.
[900.0] Frank: But if you want to actually get a whole waveform,
[902.8] Frank: then you need like five samples,
[905.36] Frank: 10 samples for each cycle
[907.92] Frank: in order to be able to capture that waveform.
[910.4] Frank: So I think, I don't know what you're doing sound.
[914.08] Bardwell: That's not what the, so the Nyquist theorem
[917.92] Bardwell: is actually really interesting if you're a nerd like me.
[921.12] Bardwell: So if you think about a sine wave,
[922.8] Bardwell: and I'm not going to draw one,
[924.16] Bardwell: but everybody can just picture a sine wave.
[926.64] Bardwell: If you know that the sine wave,
[928.72] Bardwell: if you know that the signal you're capturing is a sine wave,
[931.36] Bardwell: let's stipulate that,
[932.96] Bardwell: which means it's a perfectly repeating signal, right?
[936.08] Bardwell: At that point, the only thing you need to do
[938.24] Bardwell: to recreate the sine wave completely perfectly
[941.44] Bardwell: is to know the frequency.
[943.2] Bardwell: And right, if I say draw me a five kilohertz sine wave,
[947.12] Bardwell: well, it's just going to be a sine wave
[948.4] Bardwell: and it's either going to get more squished
[950.16] Bardwell: or more stretched out based on the frequency.
[952.56] Bardwell: So by sampling enough to just catch the top and the bottom of it,
[956.96] Bardwell: if you even capture any two points of the sine wave,
[959.52] Bardwell: you can determine the frequency.
[961.6] Bardwell: And that's where the Nyquist theorem comes from.
[963.76] Bardwell: You have to sample it twice the rate of the wave,
[967.04] Bardwell: and then you could perfectly recreate it.
[968.48] Bardwell: So then, okay, fine, but you say,
[971.04] Bardwell: our sounds aren't made up just as sine waves.
[972.96] Bardwell: They're made up of all kinds of things, right?
[975.68] Bardwell: You look at an audio waveform
[977.6] Bardwell: and it doesn't look like a sine wave.
[979.52] Bardwell: And then there's a thing called a Fourier transform,
[982.48] Bardwell: which says that any signal,
[983.84] Bardwell: no matter how complex,
[985.44] Bardwell: can be broken down into a sum of sine waves.
[988.72] Bardwell: So the Fourier transform and the Nyquist limit
[991.2] Bardwell: together basically are how,
[993.52] Bardwell: that's how you can say that any signal,
[995.6] Bardwell: as long as you assume that it's band limited.
[997.84] Bardwell: So we're going to say this,
[999.44] Bardwell: we're going to capture everything below 16 kilohertz
[1002.56] Bardwell: and we sample it at 32 kilohertz
[1004.56] Bardwell: and it's just mathematically true
[1006.64] Bardwell: that if the signal stops at 16 kilohertz,
[1009.12] Bardwell: you sample it at 32 kilohertz,
[1010.56] Bardwell: there is no advantage to sampling faster than that.
[1014.24] Bardwell: Unless you're trying to capture higher frequencies,
[1016.0] Bardwell: you have perfectly recreated
[1017.6] Bardwell: and captured everything below that.
[1019.28] Frank: Because there's also the beat frequencies.
[1021.84] Frank: So if you're sampling at 5,000 samples a second
[1025.6] Frank: and you've got a frequency that's,
[1028.4] Frank: what is it, 4,998 hertz,
[1033.92] Frank: then you end up with a beat frequency on that
[1037.44] Frank: because you're sampling at the top of the signal
[1040.4] Frank: and then you're still feeling a little bit further along.
[1043.36] Bardwell: Yeah, absolutely.
[1044.0] Bardwell: That's aliasing.
[1045.6] Bardwell: But you said the beat is at 4,999
[1048.96] Bardwell: and you're sampling at 5,000.
[1050.64] Bardwell: If the beat's at 4,999,
[1052.32] Bardwell: you need to sample it twice that
[1053.6] Bardwell: and then the aliasing goes away.
[1055.52] Bardwell: It's true.
[1056.56] Tony: Crash test FBV says he makes signs and waves while driving.
[1060.4] Tony: Probably not.
[1064.0] Jack: I'd love, Tony, to like...
[1066.48] Jack: Tony, did you understand any of that?
[1069.28] Tony: I just nodded and pretended I did.
[1074.0] Bardwell: It's heady material for this podcast.
[1078.16] Bardwell: And I feel a little bit embarrassed talking about that stuff
[1081.6] Bardwell: because there are real engineers.
[1083.28] Bardwell: I can say the words, Fourier transform,
[1085.44] Bardwell: and you guys think I sound smart,
[1086.72] Bardwell: but I know what a Fourier transform is
[1090.72] Bardwell: if you look up the dictionary definition.
[1092.56] Bardwell: I couldn't write one.
[1093.68] Bardwell: I couldn't do one.
[1095.28] Bardwell: I just happened and it's like,
[1096.8] Bardwell: you show me an excavator
[1098.88] Bardwell: and I'll be like, that thing digs holes.
[1100.64] Bardwell: But you put me in the seat of the excavator
[1102.24] Bardwell: and I'd have a lot of trouble.
[1103.44] Bardwell: So that's kind of where I'm at.
[1104.4] Jack: I think you could work it out.
[1106.32] Bardwell: Maybe, right.
[1108.56] Bardwell: How hard could it be?
[1109.68] Jack: Yeah. I don't know.
[1111.6] Jack: Maybe. I don't know.
[1112.48] Jack: Because I was researching what is a Kalman filter
[1115.92] Jack: and it's like, isn't it just...
[1118.8] Jack: It's a mass.
[1119.76] Jack: I know, yeah.
[1120.56] Jack: It's just like measuring things that you can't get to
[1125.6] Jack: and working out estimates when you haven't got the data,
[1131.04] Jack: between data.
[1132.08] Jack: Is that right?
[1133.44] Bardwell: Yeah.
[1134.0] Bardwell: Something like that.
[1135.28] Bardwell: From what I can tell,
[1136.64] Bardwell: the good thing about a Kalman filter is that
[1140.24] Bardwell: it's very good at giving you an approximation of a system
[1144.8] Bardwell: based on an incomplete measurement
[1146.96] Bardwell: of some aspects of a system.
[1150.08] Bardwell: So the example that they use on the Wikipedia page,
[1153.04] Bardwell: which of course is the first place I went,
[1155.44] Bardwell: is that if you've got a car
[1157.36] Bardwell: and it's moving at a certain speed
[1159.04] Bardwell: and you want to measure the distance,
[1160.64] Bardwell: the car is gone.
[1162.32] Bardwell: Well, if you get periodic position updates,
[1165.52] Bardwell: you can do dead reckoning based on the speed
[1168.0] Bardwell: and estimate the position.
[1169.76] Bardwell: And that dead reckoning is going to be
[1173.28] Bardwell: not perfectly accurate,
[1174.4] Bardwell: but you could estimate the position if you knew it.
[1176.72] Bardwell: And a Kalman filter then,
[1178.0] Bardwell: that's like a very, very simple example
[1180.0] Bardwell: of what a Kalman filter might be.
[1182.16] Bardwell: One of the other things about Kalman filters
[1184.08] Bardwell: that seems from my cursory reading to be good about them
[1188.16] Bardwell: is that they give you a metric
[1190.64] Bardwell: for the uncertainty of the measurement.
[1193.36] Bardwell: So you can know that we have a very good estimate of the system
[1198.56] Bardwell: or a poor estimate of the system,
[1200.72] Bardwell: whereas other kinds of things might give you,
[1203.44] Bardwell: and you just don't know if it's good data or bad data.
[1205.84] Frank: This is our best guess.
[1206.8] Frank: We have no idea whether it's good or not.
[1209.6] Bardwell: Well, right.
[1210.72] Bardwell: But a Kalman filter might say,
[1212.8] Bardwell: this is a pretty good guess.
[1213.76] Bardwell: We're doing good here.
[1214.88] Bardwell: Oh, hang on.
[1215.68] Bardwell: It's a little worse now.
[1217.12] Bardwell: But if you really want to know about that stuff,
[1219.12] Bardwell: you should get somebody who knows about a Kalman.
[1221.6] Bardwell: And I'm really not that guy.
[1226.16] Jack: We should actually speak to Kalman
[1229.04] Jack: and see whether we come on.
[1230.08] Jack: Are you in contact with him?
[1232.16] Bardwell: Oh, not particularly.
[1233.68] Bardwell: I mean, I've talked to him on Messenger once or twice,
[1236.16] Bardwell: but I've tried to get him to go on my show.
[1238.24] Bardwell: I'm not sure if he does appearances.
[1240.8] Bardwell: I'm not sure if he likes to be interviewed.
[1242.72] Frank: That sounds like a challenge.
[1244.56] Bardwell: Tell him to get a drink and come on.
[1248.16] Jack: He's safe here amongst morons.
[1252.24] Frank: Owen suggests going back to analog,
[1255.12] Frank: like vinyl over MP3.
[1260.8] Frank: Well, I mean, get a fixed wing.
[1262.8] Frank: Something that's positively stable and you can have a go.
[1265.52] Bardwell: There's nothing wrong with analog,
[1267.52] Bardwell: but the argument that a digital representation
[1271.76] Bardwell: of an analog signal is in some way inferior is incorrect.
[1277.36] Bardwell: There may be flaws.
[1278.64] Bardwell: That comes from, I think, back in the day
[1280.4] Bardwell: when CDs were first coming out,
[1283.6] Bardwell: the digital production chain wasn't there.
[1286.48] Bardwell: So you had analog tools being used to record and master
[1289.36] Bardwell: and mix the music and then digital mastery to the CD.
[1294.8] Bardwell: And even after we had full digital chain
[1298.8] Bardwell: all the way from recording to CD,
[1301.44] Bardwell: people still didn't know how to use the tools in a lot of ways.
[1303.92] Bardwell: There was a learning curve as we transitioned to digital.
[1306.8] Bardwell: And a lot of people said they listened to CDs
[1308.88] Bardwell: and the CD sounded worse than the vinyl.
[1310.96] Bardwell: And they said digital sucks.
[1312.4] Bardwell: But it wasn't because the CD was digital.
[1314.48] Bardwell: It was because people just didn't know how to make CDs yet.
[1317.92] Bardwell: It's a fact that a digital representation can be just as good.
[1322.08] Bardwell: And in fact, I think today,
[1324.0] Bardwell: I mean, there's just no question that you do an A-B test
[1327.92] Bardwell: and nobody's going to pick a record over a CD.
[1331.44] Bardwell: Well, if you have a particularly good record,
[1334.48] Bardwell: maybe it'll beat the CD.
[1335.68] Bardwell: But if you take the record and you play the record
[1338.64] Bardwell: into a good, high-quality digital recorder
[1341.2] Bardwell: and then you play back the digital recording of the record,
[1344.48] Bardwell: I don't think you're going to see a difference.
[1346.56] Bardwell: That seems fair.
[1349.28] Bardwell: I have a strong opinion on almost anything.
[1350.96] Bardwell: That's what you have to do at the end of the show.
[1363.28] Frank: Someone else asked, has anyone got any tips
[1367.12] Frank: for using conformal coating?
[1369.36] Frank: And Tony might even be able to help on that one.
[1371.92] Tony: I just, this is my tip.
[1373.84] Tony: Slap it on.
[1376.48] Tony: That's all I do.
[1377.68] Tony: Get it out, slap it on, do it in a well-ventilated area.
[1381.68] Jack: Tony doesn't, as you can tell.
[1386.56] Tony: This is why he's like, oh, the label.
[1389.2] Jack: And he's got nothing to live for.
[1391.36] Tony: The label's fallen off.
[1393.2] Jack: That's what he says.
[1396.8] Tony: It's like a nail varnish by one.
[1399.04] Tony: I just took it out and just plastered it everywhere.
[1401.36] Tony: It seems to work.
[1402.56] Jack: Tony wants to break through.
[1404.32] Frank: Have you started selling your toothpaste tubes
[1406.96] Frank: of yellow goo yet, Jack?
[1408.64] Frank: No.
[1409.2] Frank: It goes off.
[1411.12] Jack: I thought you were like sealing it up
[1412.48] Frank: and posting it out and making your own little...
[1414.96] Frank: Mate, I was taking it.
[1418.64] Frank: I thought it was a good idea.
[1419.68] Frank: I still think you should do it.
[1420.96] Jack: Yeah, I know.
[1422.48] Jack: I have been funny enough.
[1424.72] Tony: I need some.
[1426.16] Jack: But I've got some already.
[1430.16] Jack: Extending the cable of a tramp.
[1433.84] Jack: So not quite long enough for my,
[1437.04] Jack: for what I want to use them for.
[1439.36] Frank: What do you want to use it for?
[1441.36] Jack: Well, the alien.
[1442.4] Jack: I don't like it being on top plate
[1444.96] Jack: because the battery straps go through it.
[1446.96] Jack: So that's my excuse.
[1449.92] Frank: Rob Britten in the chat asks,
[1451.36] Frank: has Andy RC got a doctor's note for being absent?
[1455.6] Jack: I don't know.
[1456.08] Jack: Do you need a doctor's note to submit it to yourself
[1458.32] Jack: when you're self-employed?
[1460.8] Bardwell: You know, I went to the doctor recently
[1462.96] Bardwell: because you could probably hear in my voice.
[1464.48] Bardwell: And if you watch my channel, you know,
[1466.24] Bardwell: I've been hoarse.
[1467.52] Bardwell: I've had a throat.
[1469.12] Bardwell: I don't know what it is.
[1469.76] Bardwell: But I lost my voice.
[1471.2] Bardwell: I went to the doctor to get some medicine for it.
[1474.96] Bardwell: She said, don't worry.
[1475.68] Bardwell: We can, I told her, I said, well, she said,
[1479.04] Bardwell: what's your insurance?
[1479.84] Bardwell: Which you guys know nothing about
[1481.04] Bardwell: being over there in the UK.
[1482.08] Bardwell: But I said, oh, no, I'm in between insurances right now.
[1486.64] Bardwell: Because when I leave one job and get the other,
[1488.48] Bardwell: I have to change plans.
[1489.76] Bardwell: And so I said, well, I'll be paying out of pocket this time.
[1492.0] Bardwell: She said, okay.
[1493.44] Bardwell: So she assumed I was self-employed.
[1495.04] Bardwell: And she said, she said, well,
[1496.24] Bardwell: we'll give you a doctor's note.
[1497.44] Bardwell: I said, oh, I don't need a doctor's note.
[1499.68] Bardwell: I just, I could stop working anytime.
[1501.36] Bardwell: I don't want to make any money.
[1504.08] Bardwell: I have no boss to report though.
[1505.76] Tony: I call it self-unemployed.
[1508.48] Bardwell: Right.
[1509.2] Bardwell: Right.
[1510.0] Bardwell: Self-unemployed.
[1511.84] Bardwell: You know, it's actually,
[1513.04] Bardwell: I brought something for you guys too,
[1515.76] Bardwell: because my voice is normally not very deep,
[1518.72] Bardwell: but you can probably hear right now.
[1520.08] Bardwell: It's deeper than it normally is.
[1521.76] Bardwell: And I actually took the opportunity to make something.
[1524.64] Bardwell: And I have it ready to go.
[1526.32] Bardwell: And I'm going to play it right now over the air
[1528.64] Bardwell: with your permission.
[1530.4] Bardwell: Here we go.
[1530.8] Bardwell: Watch this.
[1533.2] (laughter): In a world full of confusion,
[1535.52] (laughter): one man will teach the internet how to fly.
[1540.0] (laughter): Joshua Bardwell is the know-it-all.
[1550.08] Bardwell: That was me.
[1550.64] Bardwell: That was me.
[1551.44] Bardwell: That was my voice.
[1552.32] Bardwell: I'm the movie.
[1553.2] Bardwell: My voice was so low.
[1554.4] Bardwell: I could pretend to be the movie trailer guy.
[1558.56] Jack: He just needed brought to you by monster.
[1561.68] Jack: Brought to you by monster.
[1565.92] Bardwell: That's what you guys are like.
[1568.48] Bardwell: I was just going around the house.
[1571.68] Bardwell: Just going around the house doing that.
[1574.72] Bardwell: Like to my son.
[1577.12] Jack: Chuffling to yourself.
[1578.64] Jack: Do you miss the old job?
[1580.72] Jack: Or are you like,
[1583.6] Jack: because you're hardcore at it, man.
[1585.36] Jack: You're like appearing on everything
[1587.28] Jack: and having to do interviews.
[1588.96] Jack: And the pinball is looking really full.
[1592.56] Jack: There's a little bit of a mess now.
[1594.16] Jack: I've never seen mess on your desk that much.
[1596.96] Jack: Which this mess back here.
[1598.16] Bardwell: Yeah, and that one.
[1599.04] Bardwell: No, it's all over.
[1600.88] Bardwell: It comes and it goes though.
[1602.8] Bardwell: Yeah, I'm staying busy.
[1604.0] Bardwell: I'm staying very busy.
[1605.52] Bardwell: I'm treating it, you know,
[1606.8] Bardwell: now I have to I have nothing to fall back on.
[1609.2] Bardwell: So I'm desperately taking every opportunity
[1611.6] Bardwell: to do whatever I can to try and make sure
[1614.32] Bardwell: I keep being able to, you know, feed my family
[1616.96] Bardwell: and pay the rent.
[1619.36] Bardwell: Fortunately, everybody's been great.
[1621.36] Bardwell: I had a huge boost to my Patreon.
[1624.08] Bardwell: So my Patreon was already,
[1626.16] Bardwell: I'm very happy with the support people have given me.
[1628.72] Bardwell: But the minute I announced that I was going full time,
[1631.92] Bardwell: so like, so many people just were like,
[1635.2] Bardwell: hey, you know, I've been waiting.
[1636.8] Bardwell: And I clearly now is the time.
[1639.04] Bardwell: And even when people sometimes feel a little embarrassed
[1642.72] Bardwell: and they're like, oh, you know,
[1643.6] Bardwell: it's only a dollar a month,
[1644.64] Bardwell: but it's all I can afford.
[1646.16] Bardwell: Like more than half of my patrons,
[1648.56] Bardwell: I think the average is, I don't know,
[1650.96] Bardwell: I don't know, but more than half of them
[1652.8] Bardwell: are like at one or $2 a month.
[1654.64] Bardwell: And it's just, you know, enough people do it.
[1656.24] Bardwell: And it really adds up and it makes a living.
[1657.92] Bardwell: So it's very nice.
[1659.36] Bardwell: It's very good.
[1660.48] Bardwell: And I really hope and look forward to being able
[1662.56] Bardwell: to do this for a long time.
[1663.84] Bardwell: Because I love it.
[1666.8] Jack: I see the generosity of everyone on for Patreon,
[1671.12] Jack: just like keeps it alive,
[1672.56] Jack: especially like, you know, YouTube's going now.
[1675.92] Tony: Yeah, yeah.
[1677.76] Tony: Thousand subscribers at least.
[1679.36] Tony: And how many hours?
[1680.72] Bardwell: 4000, 4000 view hours a year, I think.
[1684.56] Bardwell: Yeah, some smaller channels got knocked recently.
[1687.92] Jack: Yeah, that's all we're allowed to talk about on that one.
[1693.84] Jack: No, no complaining.
[1695.76] Jack: Do you know what?
[1696.56] Jack: I wondered why I was like, not...
[1700.8] Jack: Hang on, Simon Bradley has got a message.
[1704.48] Jack: I haven't got the chatter.
[1705.6] Jack: I realized what the hell.
[1707.6] Jack: Send me a link to the show.
[1708.72] Jack: Might be able to get Cailin on.
[1710.4] Jack: If you want him on, that is wicked.
[1713.2] Jack: So hang on.
[1714.32] Jack: Yeah, I want him on.
[1715.76] Jack: Yep.
[1716.64] Jack: Copy link address.
[1718.72] Jack: We've got an insider who's like really tight on...
[1724.16] Tony: I think Bradley's in love with Cailin's filter.
[1727.92] Tony: He keeps going on.
[1728.96] Tony: Do you need to try and put these Cailin filters on?
[1732.88] Bardwell: I'll tell you what.
[1733.84] Bardwell: I mean, I don't say this lightly.
[1735.84] Bardwell: There have been a few times when I've flown a firmware
[1739.04] Bardwell: and it just you fly it and you're just like WTF,
[1742.48] Bardwell: knocks your socks off.
[1743.6] Bardwell: The first time I flew Betaflight,
[1745.52] Bardwell: which wasn't even called Betaflight then,
[1748.08] Bardwell: and Boris had the low pass filter on the whatever,
[1750.8] Bardwell: whatever he did in the very first Betaflight.
[1753.2] Bardwell: I flew it and I was just like how?
[1755.12] Bardwell: I didn't know.
[1755.92] Bardwell: I thought my quad flew good.
[1757.28] Bardwell: I had no idea.
[1758.72] Bardwell: And it just reset the bar.
[1761.12] Bardwell: And that's happened one or two other times.
[1763.36] Bardwell: And this was one of them.
[1766.08] Bardwell: Now granted, people who fly race flight have been like,
[1768.8] Bardwell: yeah, dude, we know.
[1770.08] Bardwell: And I've always thought that race flight flew pretty good
[1772.24] Bardwell: and liked it.
[1772.88] Bardwell: But just feeling the difference between Betaflight
[1778.0] Bardwell: with the Kalman filter and the other improvements.
[1780.72] Bardwell: I mean, it's not exactly the same as race flight.
[1783.84] Bardwell: So I really felt like it was a real step up.
[1785.92] Tony: Yeah, right.
[1786.48] Tony: Then on one of my bikes called something.
[1788.24] Bardwell: It's worth a try.
[1789.76] Bardwell: It doesn't fly exactly like race flight.
[1792.48] Bardwell: And some people have said, well, if it's so good,
[1795.2] Bardwell: why don't you just fly race flight?
[1796.4] Bardwell: And I'm like, there's a lot more to an ecosystem
[1798.96] Bardwell: than just the flight performance on the sticks.
[1801.84] Bardwell: You know, like if you don't want,
[1803.52] Bardwell: if you don't like the revolt for any reason, too bad.
[1806.64] Bardwell: Right.
[1806.96] Bardwell: So but it does fly really well.
[1809.84] Bardwell: It's worth a try.
[1811.2] Jack: Also, the other thing with these close sourced flight controllers,
[1818.88] Jack: like where do you what annoys me is the right to repair.
[1823.52] Jack: Like if you break a board and you want to replace the chip on it,
[1830.64] Jack: your serial numbers no longer match.
[1834.16] Jack: Yeah, I find that really annoying because it's like,
[1839.76] Frank: does that mean that you can't use it then?
[1842.56] Frank: Is it like hardwired in that you can't?
[1845.44] Frank: Yeah.
[1845.92] Frank: Oh, because it's like done by the key of the serial number on the chip that
[1851.12] Frank: Yeah.
[1852.08] Frank: Oh, wow.
[1854.56] Frank: Okay.
[1855.92] Frank: It really, really, really sucks.
[1858.24] Frank: And that's what stops people from using another flight controllers.
[1861.28] Jack: Yeah.
[1862.32] Jack: So the serial numbers registered and then you can't, you know, you cannot connect.
[1868.72] Jack: Wow.
[1869.36] Jack: Okay, it sucks.
[1871.44] Jack: I'm going to try and see if they've like blocked.
[1878.1] Tony: Frank, did you get any more questions for Josh?
[1880.58] Tony: Surely there is one.
[1882.26] Jack: I want to know if Joshua's going to expand to cover more than just five inch.
[1887.14] Jack: So many reviewers like Andy RC review a wide range of quads,
[1891.14] Jack: but we only get Joshua Bardwell info info one size.
[1896.58] Bardwell: Yeah, I mean, I, I am so, so prolific that it's, it's hard for me to be deep
[1907.38] Bardwell: without, without being also focused.
[1911.78] Bardwell: Because the more time I have to spend, the problem is if I,
[1915.14] Bardwell: if I try to branch out, like I'm thinking about doing like a seven inch build, right.
[1920.26] Bardwell: And I have to really put a lot of effort into making sure that I've done my research,
[1924.98] Bardwell: you know, like if I do a build and I, and I picked like a motor that everybody else
[1929.86] Bardwell: already knows is crap, then I get a lot of, I got a lot of shit for that because people
[1933.78] Bardwell: expect me to be an authority.
[1935.46] Bardwell: But it does mean I don't have as much freedom to kind of branch out as I did
[1939.54] Bardwell: when I was first starting out.
[1941.7] Bardwell: I'm trying, I am hoping to cover micros more.
[1945.46] Bardwell: Like I read my interview with Jesse Perkins come out this morning
[1948.74] Bardwell: and I have a review of this, the B brain, the Acro B with the B brain V2 from Newbie drone.
[1955.94] Bardwell: And this is a legit like tiny whip racer.
[1958.42] Bardwell: So I got a video coming out where we flew those and reviewed them.
[1960.98] Bardwell: And but most, the other thing is I put so much freaking time, like literally now,
[1966.98] Bardwell: that's my full time job.
[1968.26] Bardwell: This is just literally all I do from the minute I get up in the morning
[1971.54] Bardwell: to the minute I go to bed at night.
[1973.22] Bardwell: And so it has to be stuff I enjoy.
[1975.62] Bardwell: Otherwise I would drive myself crazy.
[1977.38] Bardwell: And as much as people like to think of me as a know it all,
[1982.02] Bardwell: I actually have a limited appetite for novelty.
[1986.98] Bardwell: I like to do the things that I enjoy and just kind of keep doing them and get really deep
[1992.42] Bardwell: into them, which is how I got where I am.
[1994.82] Bardwell: But like if I love how five inches fly, I'm just going to keep flying them.
[1998.5] Bardwell: And maybe someday I'll fly a six inch, but I'm not the kind of guy who will fly one
[2002.82] Bardwell: thing today, next thing tomorrow, next thing the day after.
[2005.38] Bardwell: I always feel like I'm not a good enough pilot yet on five inch.
[2008.34] Bardwell: Why would I want to mess myself up by going to different sizes?
[2012.26] Frank: So that was one of the other questions I think from someone was,
[2016.9] Frank: do you feel that flying different quads hurts your skills?
[2020.58] Frank: So going from micro to five inch and, you know,
[2024.34] Frank: and you need a few packs to get adjusted.
[2026.82] Frank: And I think that probably answers that question.
[2029.78] Bardwell: Yeah.
[2030.26] Bardwell: Yeah.
[2030.5] Bardwell: Well, I mean, not to say that you shouldn't mix it up,
[2033.7] Bardwell: but if you look at the pro racers, I mean, certainly I can't speak for all of them.
[2036.98] Bardwell: But if you look at what some of the pro racers do is, you know,
[2040.42] Bardwell: in the in the weeks before a major event, they'll just fly their race squad
[2044.5] Bardwell: and all five or six of their race quads are identical.
[2047.62] Bardwell: They just need to really get locked in, get their reflexes and their muscle memory
[2052.42] Bardwell: toned exactly right.
[2054.42] Bardwell: It's the same for top freestyle pilots.
[2056.5] Bardwell: I know that Steele has talked about how he builds his rigs identical
[2060.26] Bardwell: so that his muscle memory for how it's going to respond is the same.
[2063.54] Bardwell: And I bet that's true for other guys as well.
[2065.78] Bardwell: But for people who aren't at the highest, highest level,
[2068.82] Bardwell: there's a lot of fun in trying different things.
[2070.98] Bardwell: I know I tried a five S six inch rig that a local guy had built.
[2076.34] Bardwell: Team motor F 80 five S six inch.
[2080.9] Bardwell: Pardon me.
[2081.7] Bardwell: And usually don't think of six inch rigs as being speed demons.
[2084.98] Bardwell: They have a lot of torque and thrust and grunt,
[2087.3] Bardwell: but they don't have a lot of top end because the props don't make the RPMs.
[2090.26] Bardwell: But this thing, I guarantee it broke a hundred miles an hour in a straight line.
[2094.58] Bardwell: I just, we didn't have a radar gun, but it was so fast and so powerful.
[2098.74] Bardwell: And when I flew it, you also expect six inch to be to handle a little differently,
[2104.58] Bardwell: but it was just as sharp and responsive as a five inch
[2107.78] Bardwell: just because it had so much power and torque to spare.
[2110.9] Bardwell: It was just unreal.
[2112.34] Bardwell: And I was like, well, maybe there's some advantage to branching out every now and then.
[2117.54] Bardwell: Variety is the spice of life, Josh.
[2121.22] Bardwell: And, and also monster energy drink.
[2127.3] Tony: If you stay there for long enough, you might come up as a thumbnail.
[2133.94] Jack: I'm saying, yeah, can't we hold the can up?
[2139.06] UNKNOWN: Yeah.
[2139.3] Jack: Can't we just take a screenshot of him now quickly?
[2141.78] Jack: Hang on.
[2142.9] Jack: Hang on.
[2143.38] Bardwell: Hang on.
[2143.54] Bardwell: Hold on.
[2144.02] Bardwell: Hold on.
[2144.1] Bardwell: I got to change my lower third.
[2145.7] Bardwell: Yeah.
[2150.16] Jack: What else is in that?
[2151.6] Jack: My two inches is agile as my five inch.
[2156.8] Jack: There we go.
[2157.68] Jack: Hey, how are you doing?
[2160.4] Tony: There you go.
[2160.88] Tony: Screenshot light.
[2164.88] Tony: Frank, can you do that?
[2166.0] Bardwell: I can only hold that face for so long.
[2170.4] Jack: Patches says, I usually load up the car with air frames and put a battery through each,
[2176.24] Jack: but it's convenient into the light thing.
[2178.32] Jack: Rob Britton also says he's hungry and Dovey says, ha ha.
[2182.72] Jack: Are you ever going to fly a wing?
[2186.23] Bardwell: I used to fly fixed wing.
[2188.07] Bardwell: My first RC plane was a Bixler and I had a wing for a while.
[2193.59] Bardwell: I'm not a big fan of wings for fixed wing because, especially for FPV,
[2199.35] Bardwell: because they don't have good yaw.
[2200.71] Bardwell: They don't have really any yaw input, right?
[2202.47] Bardwell: They don't have a vertical stabilizer.
[2205.27] Bardwell: I suppose, I mean, you could build a wing with vertical stabilizers.
[2210.39] Bardwell: I know people have done that.
[2211.19] Bardwell: And even with rudders, the ones, what's that?
[2215.11] Frank: Or you could have two motors and differential thrust if you wanted to.
[2218.71] Bardwell: Yeah, that's true.
[2219.91] Bardwell: I never, yeah, or a thrust vectoring.
[2223.35] Bardwell: The ones I flew were just two channel and it was really annoying to fly them FPV
[2227.83] Bardwell: and have the quad be facing or the quad, the wing be facing this way
[2232.15] Bardwell: because it was in the wind and flying that way.
[2234.23] Bardwell: And you couldn't really see what you were going at.
[2237.43] Bardwell: So, yeah, they're okay.
[2240.55] Bardwell: Every time I think about flying a fixed wing, like at Flight Fest,
[2244.15] Bardwell: I went to Flight Fest East this year and I thought,
[2247.83] Bardwell: well, maybe I'll go try out something fixed wing at the flight line.
[2251.59] Bardwell: And no offense.
[2252.63] Bardwell: I'm going to offend somebody.
[2253.59] Bardwell: I know, I apologize.
[2255.99] Bardwell: They're just all going like this.
[2257.83] Bardwell: Oh, man, I'm flying in an oval.
[2260.71] Bardwell: I could fly a big oval or a small one.
[2263.59] Bardwell: High up or low down.
[2265.27] Bardwell: They're just kind of flying in ovals.
[2268.71] Jack: And inverted.
[2270.39] Jack: And don't forget, power loops.
[2273.51] Bardwell: And I don't, I joke, but I don't mean to take anything away.
[2277.11] Bardwell: Those guys are great pilots and they do.
[2279.67] Bardwell: They fly all kinds of things, especially the combat and everything.
[2282.71] Bardwell: That's fun.
[2283.51] Bardwell: I get it.
[2284.39] Bardwell: I'm not trying to put them down.
[2285.91] Bardwell: It's just when you compare that to racing a mini quad or flying proximity,
[2290.71] Bardwell: just for me, there's no comparison.
[2294.63] Bardwell: So much more fun to fly quads.
[2297.27] Jack: I was at an event once and I saw it.
[2300.39] Jack: His name's Phil.
[2301.43] Jack: He was giving me hassle.
[2302.95] Jack: Like those guys wanted to race and the freestylers were on the,
[2306.95] Jack: like, you know, had the slot for the race.
[2309.03] Jack: And they're like, oh, can't we just, you know,
[2310.95] Jack: won't we race and they do it elsewhere?
[2313.19] Jack: Like bloody freestylers.
[2314.55] Jack: And I remember shouting back to him, you know,
[2317.03] Jack: don't you get bored of being told where to go?
[2321.67] Jack: And his face just dropped really.
[2323.99] Jack: And yeah, take that one.
[2326.63] Jack: Braces.
[2327.19] Jack: I know what you mean.
[2329.27] Jack: But I like wings though.
[2330.79] Jack: I want to get a really, really big one.
[2332.95] Bardwell: I'll tell you what I want.
[2333.67] Jack: I want to be really relaxing about them.
[2335.59] Jack: Do you know what I mean?
[2336.23] Jack: You're not working the sticks all the time.
[2339.19] Bardwell: I'll tell you what I want.
[2340.07] Bardwell: I'll tell you what I want to do is I want to try a glider.
[2343.99] Bardwell: I had a guy I knew here in Knoxville.
[2346.71] Bardwell: I haven't seen him in a while, but he had a glider
[2349.27] Bardwell: and it just seemed really awesome.
[2350.87] Bardwell: I'd love to be able to like thermal to be able to put up
[2354.47] Bardwell: and ride thermals up and not have to worry about.
[2357.91] Bardwell: He would just he literally would get tired of looking up
[2360.95] Bardwell: at the sky and he would just sit down and lay back
[2363.59] Bardwell: in the grass and watch his plane.
[2365.67] Bardwell: Occasionally he'd move the sticks and it just seemed
[2368.87] Bardwell: really relaxing and he would be up there for 20,
[2371.75] Bardwell: 25 minutes on a little two S pack, you know,
[2375.19] Bardwell: because it's not running his motor.
[2377.03] Bardwell: And it just seemed really cool.
[2379.43] Jack: Those DLG guys, but they like you here.
[2384.31] Jack: Like if you listen to RC after hours, they would talk
[2388.15] Jack: about that and then equally they've got the other side
[2391.59] Jack: of it where they have like competitions on who can stay
[2393.75] Jack: up the longest and they're hunting for thermals and
[2396.71] Jack: sweating and, you know, they're so into it.
[2399.11] Jack: They can't talk to each other and it's just deadly silent
[2402.79] Jack: and you just, you know, I really enjoyed that story.
[2406.15] Jack: They told her, I don't know what episode it was,
[2408.07] Jack: but it's really cool.
[2411.99] Jack: Gone.
[2412.95] Bardwell: Well, I have a massive amount of respect for those guys.
[2415.51] Bardwell: The way they can read the wind and see the thermals
[2418.07] Bardwell: and stuff, just huge respect for that skill.
[2421.03] Jack: Yeah, looking at shadows of clouds on the ground
[2424.87] Jack: and then be able to look up and pick out your glider
[2429.11] Jack: on where it was.
[2429.99] Jack: I just, wizards.
[2432.79] Jack: Don't trust them.
[2433.43] Jack: Kill them with fire.
[2435.59] Tony: The thing I like about wings is not having to land
[2439.03] Tony: after three minutes.
[2440.71] Tony: I like the 20 minutes of relaxing, exploring, not just...
[2446.71] Frank: Maybe.
[2448.07] Frank: Can I step in and plug a mini air show?
[2450.47] Frank: Because we've...
[2451.19] Frank: Of course.
[2452.87] Jack: We're doing Monster.
[2453.91] Jack: Who cares?
[2455.91] Frank: It's now confirmed 12th and 13th of May at Puffin Airfield.
[2459.99] Frank: So there'll be the permanent tracks going to be revamped
[2463.19] Frank: for it.
[2463.59] Frank: We're going to have, I mean, the Puffin guys are doing
[2467.03] Frank: a huge amount for us.
[2468.55] Frank: There's going to be like a whole catering village
[2470.71] Frank: and all sorts going on.
[2474.15] Frank: So it sounds like it's going to be really good.
[2476.47] Frank: We can have the track and we're also going to have
[2479.83] Frank: the field as well.
[2481.11] Frank: So there'll be loads of time for fixed wings and stuff there.
[2483.99] Frank: They're going to get some guys over with some massive scale
[2488.07] Frank: warbirds and things.
[2489.11] Frank: And I think it's going to go well.
[2492.23] Frank: So watch this space.
[2494.23] Frank: Follow on Facebook and everything if you're interested.
[2500.15] Jack: There was some funny little comments.
[2502.15] Jack: Crash
[2522.21] Bardwell: There's the main reason I don't do that is that it's so much work mowing my yard
[2529.09] Bardwell: that if I had gates up, it'd just be annoying me.
[2531.33] Bardwell: But I might do it.
[2532.77] Bardwell: I might do it.
[2533.33] Bardwell: I do think that's interesting.
[2534.69] Bardwell: I'll tell you the main reason I don't do that, though,
[2537.41] Bardwell: is I'm actually not good enough.
[2541.97] Bardwell: Like they have the Stig, right?
[2543.81] Bardwell: And whoever is the Stig in any given season is a top top racing driver.
[2548.29] Bardwell: So that when he takes a car out and he puts it around the track,
[2551.81] Bardwell: people could say, well, what about the human factor?
[2554.29] Bardwell: But he is so consistent and so skilled that no one can really question
[2558.77] Bardwell: that that it's a fair test of the vehicle's capabilities.
[2562.61] Bardwell: Right.
[2563.41] Bardwell: But I've had a good enough racing pilot.
[2565.81] Bardwell: I mean, I'm not terrible, but I'm not great.
[2568.69] Bardwell: And I would worry you don't have it down in six months.
[2572.53] Bardwell: You'd be able to do it.
[2573.89] Bardwell: I would know the track.
[2574.85] Bardwell: You're right.
[2575.49] Bardwell: I would worry that I would misrepresent the vehicle.
[2578.93] Bardwell: I would fly a quad and be like, well, it was slower.
[2581.25] Bardwell: And everybody would listen.
[2582.37] Bardwell: Everybody listens to what I say.
[2583.57] Bardwell: I don't know how I managed to trick people into doing that.
[2586.13] Bardwell: But if I said that a given quad was a half a second slower than another one,
[2591.49] Bardwell: people wouldn't buy it.
[2593.41] Bardwell: Some people wouldn't buy it.
[2594.37] Bardwell: And I'd feel bad if that wasn't representative of the truth.
[2599.25] Bardwell: So I'm not sure that I'm the right racing pilot to do that.
[2603.57] Frank: We've got Gary Kent booked in on here next week.
[2607.01] Frank: And if anyone's the Stig for chords, I reckon he is having seen him
[2613.33] Frank: just whip around tracks with the top is crazy.
[2619.01] Bardwell: Pilots are so consistent.
[2620.61] Bardwell: I'm so impressed.
[2622.05] Bardwell: You watch the pilots and they're like a tenth of a second per lap difference.
[2626.37] Bardwell: They're just put them in.
[2628.05] Bardwell: And you see the same thing if you look at Top Gear.
[2631.41] Bardwell: Now we just talk about Top Gear, right?
[2633.17] Bardwell: Who misses Top Gear?
[2634.21] Bardwell: Wow.
[2635.01] Bardwell: But remember, they had the star in a reasonably priced car, right?
[2638.85] Bardwell: And then they would bring in F1 drivers every now and then
[2641.41] Bardwell: and put them in the reasonably priced car, which is not a racing car.
[2644.77] Bardwell: It's just a little four cylinders sedan.
[2648.37] Bardwell: And the F1 drivers were so fast and so consistent.
[2652.85] Bardwell: Their times were so close to each other.
[2655.49] Bardwell: It was like, clearly, these guys just are doing something really, really well.
[2660.05] Bardwell: And I'd love to find racing pilots of quads that were the same thing.
[2664.53] Bardwell: And who wanted to put down test laps.
[2668.29] Jack: Yeah.
[2669.01] Jack: Have you tried...
[2670.61] Jack: You know how you could get around the whole consistency?
[2674.69] Jack: And just build an oval course.
[2679.65] Jack: And the whole mowing thing, you of all people could make a rumba mower,
[2685.25] Jack: you know, because you need to kill your dogs anyway the other day
[2688.77] Jack: with your Harman filter race.
[2691.01] Bardwell: Come on.
[2691.41] Bardwell: No, no, no, no.
[2692.05] Jack: Little rumba, rumba, little...
[2696.05] Jack: No, as soon as you warm it, the dogs come over like, no.
[2699.89] Bardwell: Yeah, they love it.
[2701.09] Bardwell: They don't get a lot of outside time right now because it's so cold here.
[2705.25] Bardwell: No, I like mowing the lawn.
[2706.93] Bardwell: I don't want to...
[2709.57] Bardwell: Some people relax, they get in the shower and relax, you know,
[2712.37] Bardwell: and they let their mind wander.
[2713.89] Bardwell: That's one of the only...
[2715.17] Bardwell: Like, it wouldn't surprise you to know that my mind is usually going a mile a minute,
[2719.57] Bardwell: especially when I've been drinking monster energy drinks.
[2723.01] Bardwell: But when I'm mowing, it's one of the few times that I just kind of let my mind wander.
[2727.65] Bardwell: It's just, you just sort of, you know, the mower, you can't hear anything
[2731.09] Bardwell: because the mower's going and then you just kind of drive in a straight line
[2735.49] Bardwell: and following the fence line, you know, and just eventually you're done
[2739.33] Bardwell: and it's just so relaxing.
[2740.93] Bardwell: I wouldn't want anybody to do it.
[2742.13] Bardwell: I agree, honestly.
[2744.61] Frank: Is this our annual lawn mower quota?
[2746.61] Jack: Change your lower third to I sell Joshua Bardwell.
[2751.97] Jack: I sell propane and propane related accessories.
[2760.21] Jack: 10 points if anyone actually understood that reference.
[2763.17] Jack: Oh, I know.
[2766.05] Jack: We need more ladies in FPV and our hobby.
[2768.77] Jack: There was something else.
[2769.57] Jack: Oh yeah, Frank camping at Mini Air Show, by the way.
[2773.57] Jack: Digby Dan asks.
[2774.69] Frank: Definitely camping.
[2776.29] Frank: Lots of camping.
[2777.73] Frank: Barbecues fine.
[2781.01] Frank: Yeah, there's going to be stuff going on way into the night.
[2784.05] Frank: There's going to be crazy, crazy things.
[2786.61] Tony: Disco Tex.
[2788.05] Frank: Oh yes.
[2789.57] Frank: Also, I'd like to nominate Rich as fire marshal.
[2792.93] Frank: He's already on fire marshal duty at someone's ponds, I believe.
[2797.09] Frank: So he might be busy preparing for that.
[2801.09] Tony: Good luck dynamite girl at the vet.
[2802.85] Tony: I'm drinking a lot.
[2804.21] Frank: Sherman G in the chat asks, does anyone know anything
[2809.33] Frank: about the F R Sky long range receiver?
[2812.05] Frank: The new one, the R9 Slim.
[2814.45] Frank: How does it compare to the crossfire?
[2817.41] Frank: Does anyone know anything about that?
[2823.47] Bardwell: That's the 900 megahertz system, right?
[2825.63] Bardwell: No.
[2826.11] Bardwell: Free Sky has an L series receiver, which is a long range
[2832.35] Bardwell: 2.4 gigahertz receiver.
[2834.27] Bardwell: And they've just done something to soup up their, I don't know what they do.
[2838.19] Bardwell: And then they've also got, I think a 900 megahertz long range system
[2841.79] Bardwell: that is competing with crossfire.
[2844.67] Bardwell: I don't know.
[2845.87] Bardwell: Is that right?
[2846.83] Bardwell: I think that's the idea.
[2848.99] Jack: No, they've got an L series on your Taranis.
[2854.11] Jack: Hang on.
[2854.67] Jack: Yeah, exactly.
[2856.11] Jack: Yeah.
[2856.43] Jack: Like built in in the XJR and then they've got the separate,
[2861.23] Jack: yeah, long range ones competing.
[2864.35] Jack: Is that right?
[2864.83] Jack: Is that what you said?
[2865.87] Jack: I think that's right.
[2867.95] Bardwell: In your Taranis, if you go to the receiver type when you bind it,
[2872.43] Bardwell: there's D8, D16, and L.
[2875.31] Bardwell: And L is a 2.4 gigahertz receiver.
[2877.71] Bardwell: Works with your Taranis out of the box, but it does something different
[2880.99] Bardwell: to the radio protocol to make it longer range.
[2884.43] Bardwell: Whereas, I know it doesn't give you telemetry.
[2888.43] Bardwell: That's true.
[2889.63] Bardwell: Whereas they also have, I think, a 900 megahertz series of receivers.
[2894.59] Bardwell: And that is, I mean, I'm sure that the guys from TBS would cringe
[2898.91] Bardwell: if they heard me say it, but it's similar to crossfire.
[2901.71] Bardwell: In that it uses 900 megahertz and it's a long range system,
[2904.43] Bardwell: but in no other way is it anything like even close to as good as crossfire.
[2909.55] Tony: 900 is a telephone, I think.
[2912.91] Jack: Yeah, we switched to 800.
[2915.23] Jack: And also, I think, Elwin, you can flash it and make it EU compatible.
[2922.11] Jack: I think there is an EU.
[2923.87] Jack: Shall I?
[2924.59] Jack: Heaven forbid.
[2925.71] Tony: Didn't RC model reviews, didn't he say that it was not very good
[2931.15] Tony: before I got a module because of the antennas weren't
[2933.63] Tony: correct lengths and stuff like that?
[2936.59] Tony: I'm pretty sure I saw that video.
[2939.71] Jack: Oh, hang on.
[2941.71] Jack: Man, I want to, but the camera gets my nerves.
[2944.99] Jack: Something fierce.
[2945.71] Jack: I need longer to prepare, I think.
[2947.63] Jack: Maybe in a short shot.
[2951.47] Jack: Hang on.
[2952.03] Jack: Sorry.
[2952.99] Jack: I've just got a message from Simon.
[2955.55] Bardwell: He doesn't need the camera.
[2956.91] Bardwell: He can just come on voice.
[2958.43] Bardwell: Yeah, whatever.
[2960.67] Bardwell: Maybe we should book him in for another day.
[2962.91] Bardwell: Let him prop.
[2963.55] Bardwell: Yeah, don't make him jump on.
[2964.83] Bardwell: Not everybody can beat Chad Kapper.
[2967.07] Bardwell: Yeah.
[2967.55] Bardwell: Chad Kapper is the Beetlejuice of podcasts to say his name three times
[2972.03] Bardwell: and he appears somewhere right now.
[2974.27] Bardwell: His ears are perked up.
[2975.31] Bardwell: And if we say his name one more time, he'll compulsively get on his computer
[2979.23] Bardwell: and come and log into the call without even knowing why.
[2981.87] Bardwell: Come on, Kapper.
[2982.99] Frank: I wouldn't be surprised, in all honesty.
[2985.71] Frank: We're going to say it a third time.
[2987.39] Frank: Yeah, go on.
[2989.15] Frank: Chad Kapper.
[2990.03] Bardwell: That's three.
[2993.39] Bardwell: Give him a minute.
[2995.07] Jack: Sure.
[2995.71] Jack: Bard whale.
[2999.63] Jack: Well done.
[3000.19] Jack: You're pregnant now.
[3001.39] Jack: Your name three times.
[3006.51] Jack: Where are you?
[3009.15] Jack: Enter.
[3013.47] Frank: I guess, Josh, how are you?
[3018.43] Frank: Because there's talk in the chat now of comparing Crossfire,
[3022.11] Frank: FrSky, like normal ones and other protocols.
[3026.75] Frank: And how do you think that everyone's, is Crossfire going to take over,
[3033.95] Frank: do you think?
[3034.75] Frank: Where's it going to go?
[3037.07] Bardwell: So the first question people ask is, is Crossfire really all of that?
[3040.99] Bardwell: And the answer to that, the short answer to that is yes.
[3043.47] Bardwell: Crossfire is pretty cool.
[3044.83] Bardwell: It is definitely, in every way, longer range, better reliability
[3049.87] Bardwell: than, like, FrSky 2.4 gigahertz.
[3053.23] Bardwell: That's at least in part because they're using 900 megahertz
[3055.95] Bardwell: and there are things about lower frequencies that propagate better.
[3059.71] Bardwell: And that's in part because Crossfire is intelligently designed.
[3063.07] Bardwell: Those guys at TBS know what they're doing,
[3065.07] Bardwell: despite the fact that they would tell you that they're the smartest people in the world
[3068.43] Bardwell: and nobody holds a candle to them.
[3071.07] Bardwell: They also are, in fact, really smart guys.
[3074.43] Bardwell: A lot of times people with bluster don't back it up and they do back it up.
[3078.03] Bardwell: But so, for example, I was hanging out with Stinger Swarm in Atlanta a little while back
[3084.59] Bardwell: and we flew and I said, why do you use Crossfire?
[3087.31] Bardwell: You know, what's the deal?
[3088.11] Bardwell: And he said, even with the Crossfire micro receiver and the smaller, the plug-in module,
[3094.11] Bardwell: which is lower powered than the full unit, which hangs off the back of your radio,
[3097.87] Bardwell: he said, even with that thing, you will never outrun, your FPV will never outrun your control.
[3105.31] Bardwell: So as long as you can see your camera, you are not going to feel safe.
[3110.27] Bardwell: Assuming you set your antennas up right, the antennas can be a little finicky.
[3113.39] Bardwell: But he said, and just that confidence really is inspiring.
[3118.27] Bardwell: As far as the question of whether Crossfire has better, people have argued it has better latency,
[3123.15] Bardwell: there's that head-to-head video that Snake FPV did where he compared Crossfire to S-Bus.
[3128.19] Bardwell: And some people have said that the lower latency and the faster refresh rate means
[3132.43] Bardwell: it feels like more direct.
[3134.11] Bardwell: And I haven't flown it.
[3135.47] Bardwell: But, you know, what Stinger, I asked him about that too.
[3138.75] Bardwell: And he said, he said that you can feel it, but it's not like when you went from PPM to S-Bus,
[3144.67] Bardwell: where it was like, oh my God.
[3146.51] Bardwell: And then when you went back, you were like, he said, when he flies one of his quads with
[3150.91] Bardwell: a free sky receiver in it for like the first half a pack, he notices the difference and then he
[3155.79] Bardwell: adjusts. So so that's, you know, that's like a Stinger swarms opinion on Crossfire.
[3161.07] Bardwell: I haven't flown it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
[3163.23] Frank: What about you, Tony?
[3164.11] Frank: I know you've had some experience switching back and forth.
[3167.07] Tony: It was weird going from, yeah, Crossfire back to normal.
[3171.15] Tony: I was crashing a lot.
[3174.51] Bardwell: You thought there was a really big difference.
[3177.15] Tony: Enough to notice when I was racing.
[3180.75] Tony: Yes.
[3183.07] Bardwell: I'm just I'm sad that the receiver is 40 bucks a pop.
[3187.47] Bardwell: I really appreciate that with free sky.
[3190.75] Bardwell: You could for 20 bucks, maybe 25 bucks, maybe a little less, maybe 15 bucks,
[3194.99] Bardwell: depending on what receiver you get, whether it's on sale.
[3197.87] Bardwell: You can put a receiver in every quad and not really think twice about it.
[3201.71] Bardwell: Crossfire is great, but at 40 bucks for the receiver.
[3205.07] Bardwell: I mean, maybe for the average person who has only three or five quads,
[3208.59] Bardwell: maybe you can tolerate the difference.
[3211.15] Bardwell: If you're if you have a lot of quads, you have to make some hard decisions.
[3215.07] Jack: Set them up all the same with all the same switches and then plug them in.
[3219.63] Bardwell: Well, who wants to move the receiver, though?
[3222.51] Jack: That's a real asshole.
[3223.31] Bardwell: Nobody wants to do that.
[3225.07] Tony: A lot of races over here are just swapping just because of the speed.
[3230.19] Jack: Yeah.
[3231.71] Jack: I've got like, can you put in a good word for Stingy?
[3234.11] Jack: Because I messaged him on Facebook and I can't I cannot get it.
[3239.31] Jack: You know, the kiss flasher for a bit of flight.
[3246.43] Jack: Okay.
[3246.83] Jack: I cannot get that to work.
[3248.43] Jack: I've got a Cyclone and I jumped the PPM to run D shot,
[3253.79] Jack: but cannot get him to flash the kissy SCs for love, no money.
[3259.55] Bardwell: And why do you think he can help you with that?
[3260.99] Bardwell: Does he run kiss?
[3262.59] Jack: He done that.
[3263.15] Jack: Well, no, he done the tutorial of how to how to flash your kissy SC through beat flight.
[3269.63] Jack: It's like a little flash loader app.
[3272.03] Bardwell: Tell you what, some some YouTube personalities, people ask them questions.
[3276.11] Bardwell: They don't answer.
[3276.99] Bardwell: They don't respond.
[3278.43] Bardwell: I know.
[3279.07] Bardwell: I know.
[3279.71] Bardwell: Stingy.
[3280.35] Bardwell: I know the wrong place.
[3281.95] Bardwell: It's not it's not like somebody out there who would help everybody.
[3287.71] Jack: Stingy.
[3288.19] Jack: I know.
[3288.59] Jack: Like, I just can't.
[3290.03] Jack: I mean, one one thing.
[3293.71] Jack: You got any interesting gimbals?
[3296.51] Bardwell: He's talking about camera gimbals.
[3298.27] Bardwell: Yeah.
[3299.79] Bardwell: I don't think every so often somebody messes you like, you know,
[3303.87] Bardwell: three times a year somebody messages me and says,
[3305.95] Bardwell: Hey, man, I got this idea.
[3308.19] Bardwell: What if we put a FPV camera on a gimbal?
[3311.71] Bardwell: So when the quadcopter pitched forward, the camera would tilt up.
[3315.95] Bardwell: Why doesn't somebody do that?
[3317.31] Bardwell: I'm like, somebody's done that.
[3320.19] Bardwell: Um, for I think for for racing in a acro, it's really important that the up tilt
[3325.95] Bardwell: angle be consistent so that you know what direction your motors are thrusting
[3331.87] Bardwell: relative to the camera angle so that when you punch the throttle,
[3335.07] Bardwell: you know what direction your quads going to go.
[3337.39] Bardwell: I could imagine a camera on a gimbal so that as you take off,
[3342.83] Bardwell: it tilts up to like 35 degrees and then stays there.
[3345.95] Bardwell: But a dynamic one that continues to tilt.
[3348.91] Bardwell: I think that's no good for racing or for or acro flying.
[3352.75] Bardwell: The other thing is that it's a reliability issue.
[3356.19] Bardwell: You know, your camera is right out in the front.
[3358.03] Bardwell: It takes big hits and having it on a servo or something is going to really,
[3362.83] Bardwell: you know, it's going to break speed to keep up either.
[3367.15] Bardwell: I don't know about that.
[3368.11] Bardwell: I mean, there's some really high speed.
[3371.31] Bardwell: The servos that run the swash plate on a on a collective pitch.
[3374.59] Bardwell: Hell, you know, they and whatever.
[3376.51] Bardwell: They're pretty they're pretty creepy, but I don't know if it's really worth it.
[3380.43] Bardwell: I think that's oftentimes just somebody who hasn't learned to fly with up tilt
[3384.11] Bardwell: yet and is trying to solve it, you know, with technology.
[3389.71] Frank: Richard Warwick in the chat confirms that alcohol definitely affects
[3394.51] Frank: the latency on his system.
[3396.75] Frank: So what can you say about Monster Energy Drink?
[3400.35] Bardwell: Monster Energy Drink.
[3401.31] Bardwell: Well, I think it would be interesting.
[3402.51] Bardwell: Remember the test that the flight test guys did?
[3405.55] Bardwell: Not flight test, Rotorite guys.
[3406.99] Bardwell: Sorry.
[3407.55] Bardwell: The Rotorite guys did where they got everybody drunk and they had them race laps.
[3411.15] Bardwell: We should see if Monster Energy Drink people race faster.
[3415.79] Jack: I wonder.
[3416.35] Jack: Hang on.
[3417.23] Jack: One that sales representative.
[3418.99] Jack: Let me just Google like Monster.
[3424.03] Frank: Um, yeah, it's been good to have you on.
[3428.83] Frank: I don't think we should push you too far past the hour, Mark, because we need to
[3433.07] Frank: keep some voice for your next show that I'm sure will be on soon.
[3435.87] Frank: What else are you doing soon?
[3437.23] Frank: Have you got anything lined up?
[3440.27] Bardwell: The next thing that I'm doing is in Atlanta, not in Atlanta, in Loganville, Georgia,
[3445.31] Bardwell: which is a suburb of Atlanta.
[3447.79] Bardwell: It's quad camp, Rotorite quad camp.
[3450.35] Bardwell: Um, uh, that is a, the Loganville one is actually sold out.
[3454.59] Bardwell: So there's not really much, I think it's sold out.
[3456.27] Bardwell: So there's not much point in me plugging it, but, uh, basically, uh, the Rotorite
[3460.75] Bardwell: stinger swarm is heading this up.
[3462.11] Bardwell: He quit his job to do this.
[3464.19] Bardwell: Uh, he quit his job as an airline pilot, if you can believe that.
[3466.91] Bardwell: So what is his priorities are actually had him on my side, my podcast, uh, recently.
[3473.79] Bardwell: And we talked about it and he is going to be doing these quad camps and other
[3477.95] Bardwell: educational things with Rotorite quad camp.
[3480.51] Bardwell: Basically is, you know, 35 people come and then they hang out for a weekend with, uh,
[3486.75] Bardwell: me, uh, drew the drip, uh, who else is going to be a Tommy?
[3490.59] Bardwell: I'm a God, um, other people, different people, depending on the city.
[3495.23] Bardwell: He said he was hoping to do a basically one a month all around the country.
[3499.23] Bardwell: And then we even had some interest from people in other countries.
[3502.11] Bardwell: If you're not in the U S there may even be one coming to you.
[3505.31] Bardwell: It's just getting started.
[3506.43] Bardwell: This is the second one.
[3507.39] Bardwell: I'm super excited to be a part of it.
[3509.79] Bardwell: Uh, Chad, I was, I was talking to, I heard about the first one and I messaged, uh,
[3514.67] Bardwell: Chad capper and said, you son of a, I had the idea to do this six months ago.
[3519.87] Jack: Let me just do a message in, hang on.
[3521.63] Bardwell: Uh, Josh said, you're a son of a, I couldn't get the logistics together.
[3525.71] Bardwell: I didn't make it happen.
[3526.91] Bardwell: It kills me that you've got to it before me.
[3529.23] Bardwell: Please for God's sake, let me be in the next one.
[3531.31] Bardwell: And he said, funny, you mentioned that it's going to be in Atlanta.
[3533.87] Bardwell: So, um, so that's what I'm doing.
[3535.23] Bardwell: It's a week of the, it's the 27th and 28th and there will be more.
[3538.43] Bardwell: And I super, I hope to be involved with all of them.
[3541.07] Bardwell: Uh, so I don't think I have any other podcasts.
[3544.11] Bardwell: I'm doing more live streams myself now that I'm a full timer.
[3547.95] Bardwell: Uh, and, uh, yeah, just making videos.
[3551.63] Frank: Yeah, good stuff.
[3554.83] Frank: Thank you for coming on.
[3556.75] Frank: Um, like Tony's been pushing in the chat, we've got lots of people watching.
[3561.39] Frank: So please do like subscribe, go check out our Patreon, go check out Josh's Patreon.
[3567.87] Frank: Please keep us all running and doing things.
[3571.95] Bardwell: You can also, since I'll also plug my website, www.fpvenowitall.com.
[3579.15] Bardwell: If you, if you're not able or don't want to be a patron for whatever reason,
[3583.15] Bardwell: there are other ways you can support me there, including just watching my videos,
[3586.19] Bardwell: which helps a lot, but there's other stuff like using my affiliate links or,
[3590.03] Bardwell: or checking out the website.
[3591.23] Bardwell: So I'll plug that real quick.
[3592.99] Jack: Yeah.
[3593.23] Jack: You can also support Josh by going to h2gps dot w dot monster energy drink forward slash contact
[3602.11] Jack: and filling out the form because apparently, um, uh, they love to hear from our fans.
[3609.31] Jack: The policy of monster energy comp is not set to unsolicited submissions or ideas or other
[3615.23] Jack: creative material, but if you message them and let them know that Josh is a really good
[3619.31] Jack: representent representative, it might help him fund his, his little crack habit.
[3629.15] Bardwell: Now you're, you're, you're playing me off the show, but you did ask me to
[3633.63] Bardwell: behind me.
[3634.59] Bardwell: Are we out of time or do you want to, if we're out of time, I don't care.
[3640.27] Bardwell: It's your show.
[3640.91] Bardwell: You sure?
[3641.63] Bardwell: Bonus material.
[3643.63] Tony: Bonus 10 minutes.
[3644.91] Jack: Five, five minutes.
[3648.42] Frank: I should probably like get this presenting, shouldn't I?
[3651.3] Jack: Yeah.
[3651.94] Jack: There you go.
[3653.06] Jack: Oh man.
[3653.54] Jack: You look so cool.
[3656.5] Bardwell: Why aren't they in white?
[3658.5] Bardwell: I don't know.
[3659.38] Bardwell: These are the DJI goggles.
[3662.82] Bardwell: They sent them to me.
[3663.78] Bardwell: We're going to see if these actually are as good for FPV racing as regular,
[3668.34] Bardwell: you know, fat sharks or better.
[3670.1] Bardwell: And then what other, let me tell you something cool.
[3672.02] Bardwell: I didn't know about these.
[3673.54] Bardwell: I only just unboxed them today, but, um, the FPV receiver, the video receiver
[3679.94] Bardwell: has the ability to output S bus.
[3682.82] Bardwell: So you can plug, you can plug your transmitter into these goggles and it will transmit your
[3689.3] Bardwell: control signal over the digital video link so that you'll never, as long as you have video,
[3696.66] Bardwell: you also have control and you don't need like a free sky receiver in your quad.
[3701.86] Bardwell: You can just use this little guy, which is also your video receiver.
[3705.46] Bardwell: I didn't know that.
[3706.02] Bardwell: That's pretty slick.
[3707.06] Bardwell: Yeah.
[3708.18] Bardwell: This is coming up, coming up on my channel.
[3710.66] Jack: Wow.
[3710.98] Jack: There's no way that would fit in the snail.
[3712.82] Jack: Surely.
[3714.5] Bardwell: Oh yeah.
[3714.98] Bardwell: That's the thing.
[3715.54] Bardwell: This is the video receiver.
[3716.82] Bardwell: And if you choose to use it that way, the control receiver, and you can see it's,
[3721.14] Bardwell: it's fairly bulky.
[3723.22] Bardwell: But I'm really, they did a smart thing.
[3725.46] Bardwell: I'll tell you what they did.
[3726.26] Bardwell: That's a smart thing.
[3726.98] Bardwell: Look at that.
[3728.18] Bardwell: Same with HS117.
[3731.06] Bardwell: Yeah.
[3731.38] Bardwell: Look at that.
[3731.78] Bardwell: Even same bolt pattern.
[3733.22] Bardwell: How it's, and you know, it's so like I've had the, um,
[3737.22] Bardwell: the top sky goggles.
[3738.18] Bardwell: This is red.
[3739.14] Bardwell: They're behind me on the desk right there, but you can barely see them.
[3742.26] Bardwell: And the top sky goggles.
[3743.38] Bardwell: Those guys did so much right.
[3744.9] Bardwell: Like, but there are so many little things about the top sky goggles that you're like,
[3748.66] Bardwell: what were you thinking?
[3750.02] Bardwell: Like, like, for example, the, um, the diopter slots that hold the, the
[3753.54] Bardwell: diopters for people who don't have perfect vision.
[3756.1] Bardwell: They're not the same size as the, uh, this is a fat shark.
[3758.5] Bardwell: So you can't use fat shark adapters.
[3760.34] Bardwell: And it's like, what were you thinking?
[3761.54] Bardwell: Why did you, why would you do that?
[3763.06] Jack: They took measurements from, uh, pictures on the internet.
[3765.86] Jack: They didn't actually have it yet.
[3767.38] Jack: Do you know what I mean?
[3767.78] Jack: They're just estimating.
[3769.7] Bardwell: So I see this and I'm like, uh, you see, that's smart.
[3774.5] Bardwell: You were paying attention.
[3776.1] Bardwell: You guys are really, it's little things like that.
[3778.18] Bardwell: That impressed me.
[3779.22] Jack: Is it the same run cam thread though?
[3781.54] Jack: Get a run cam bolt.
[3783.22] Jack: You know, I don't think I'm sure he wants it.
[3788.18] Jack: 2.5.
[3789.22] Tony: Aren't DJI doing, um, some presentation on the 23rd of a new drone?
[3794.42] Tony: California, pretty sure they're going to release something.
[3799.62] Bardwell: So I don't know if it's the same bolt pattern, but it's actually, it is
[3803.3] Bardwell: definitely the same size and width.
[3805.86] Bardwell: It's exactly.
[3807.78] Jack: I just thought maybe the screw doesn't fit in there, but I guess provide a
[3812.1] Jack: screw that you made.
[3812.98] Jack: I really dig that it really, if that's the way to win me over, if you want me to
[3816.66] Bardwell: review a product of yours is to show me, you were thinking and paying attention
[3820.5] Bardwell: to little details like that.
[3822.02] Bardwell: They could have made it some weird proprietary thing and you'd be like, well,
[3825.22] Bardwell: great DJI.
[3825.78] Bardwell: Thanks.
[3825.94] Bardwell: How am I supposed to actually put this in my frame, which is, which is the kind of
[3830.5] Bardwell: mistake you would make if you were a big company trying to get into a new market.
[3834.5] Bardwell: You would miss little details like that.
[3836.5] Bardwell: And I feel like, I mean, the, I really, I really wish top sky the best.
[3840.58] Bardwell: They have, they have the fundamentals of a really good goggle here, but they've
[3844.9] Bardwell: missed a lot of little details that are killing it for me, but I don't think
[3848.34] Bardwell: little details that are killing it for me, but I, I hope they get those details
[3852.02] Bardwell: right.
[3852.42] Bardwell: And I think what it is is that top sky makes these optical products, but they've
[3856.82] Bardwell: never made an FPV goggle before.
[3858.66] Bardwell: And so they kind of dove in full, you know, with enthusiasm, but they missed a
[3862.82] Bardwell: lot of details.
[3863.78] Bardwell: Whereas you look at something like this with DJI, the ability to do the S bus
[3867.78] Bardwell: out.
[3868.34] Bardwell: So you don't have to use your regular receiver and they have this super long
[3873.46] Bardwell: range digital video link.
[3875.38] Bardwell: And they're like, yeah, sure.
[3876.34] Bardwell: Put your control link over it.
[3877.62] Bardwell: It just plugs into the trainer port on the back of your radio.
[3880.5] Bardwell: You use your radio.
[3881.46] Bardwell: It just plugs into the trainer port.
[3882.98] Bardwell: That is really smart.
[3884.34] Bardwell: And that is a real value and the ability to use whatever frame you want.
[3888.66] Bardwell: Just mount the camera.
[3890.1] Jack: Yes.
[3890.58] Jack: Till you, till you plug it all in, go to use it.
[3893.14] Jack: And then you have to answer 10 questions about the law of everything.
[3897.78] Bardwell: And I was doing that right before I came on the show.
[3902.26] Bardwell: I was going to, I turned the goggles on and I was going to like, just look at them
[3906.1] Bardwell: and try them out.
[3906.74] Bardwell: And the first thing the goggles did is they popped up a screen that said, please
[3909.78] Bardwell: register these goggles.
[3911.38] Bardwell: So I had to go to the DJI site and download the DJI program and log in.
[3915.62] Bardwell: And I was still in the middle of all that bullshit when I came on the show.
[3919.22] Bardwell: So anyway, all right, you guys, thank you guys for having me on.
[3923.78] Jack: Can I say one thing before if anyone's got any leads to someone who can make or help
[3932.26] Jack: me, or if I have to pay them to get a Storm32 gimbal controller to work properly,
[3940.66] Jack: I would greatly appreciate it.
[3943.62] Jack: Links, people, I've messaged Ollie, anyone, like, you know, I've even looked at companies
[3950.9] Jack: in the UK that I would pay someone to get it to work.
[3955.14] Jack: And that's it.
[3955.94] Tony: But thank you.
[3957.62] Tony: We miss Andy.
[3958.5] Tony: I'll say hopefully we'll see you next week, mate.
[3960.98] Jack: Get better.
[3961.86] Jack: He's even iller than Joshua Bardwell.
[3964.1] Jack: Frank, do you want to see us out?
[3966.42] Jack: No, by all means.
[3967.78] Jack: Oh, please go on.
[3968.66] Jack: I like it when you do it.
[3971.54] Frank: Thank you, everyone, for listening and either on YouTube or on one of our many,
[3977.06] Frank: many podcast platforms that these are all now lovely and edited and released on.
[3982.02] Frank: Thanks to our beautiful patrons.
[3983.62] Frank: In a world full of confusion, one man will teach.
[3986.42] Jack: All the episodes have been edited.
[3994.1] Jack: We're releasing them one a day.
[3996.34] Jack: Yeah, because they've been paid for by our lovely patrons.
[3999.38] Jack: Thank you very much, guys.
[4000.98] Jack: Can't believe Joshua Bardwell's bloody trolling us.
[4003.94] Jack: What's happened?
[4005.54] Jack: Are we out?
[4006.1] Jack: Are we out yet?
[4007.14] Jack: No.
[4008.58] Bardwell: Thanks, everyone.
[4009.46] Bardwell: Bye.
[4009.94] Bardwell: It was the worst show ever.
[4011.54] Bardwell: Telemetry lost.
