[389.62] Alex Edit: And so when I started the channel,
[391.62] Alex Edit: I didn't have other stories to tell,
[393.62] Alex Edit: or it was really hard for me to tell other stories because people,
[397.62] Alex Edit: you know, they're very, they protect themselves.
[400.62] Alex Edit: You don't, you don't know how you're going to tell their story.
[402.62] Alex Edit: So I just started telling my story.
[405.62] Alex Edit: And so now it's been like, I don't know, two years or something like that.
[408.62] Alex Edit: It, it I'm heavily into aviation and pretty much all things that fly
[413.62] Alex Edit: aviation, drones, helicopters, and RC airplanes.
[418.62] Alex Edit: And so I am now creating,
[421.62] Alex Edit: I don't want to say it's a different channel,
[423.62] Alex Edit: but I'm making it so that I can tell other stories outside of only my story
[428.62] Alex Edit: because I don't only want to tell my story.
[431.62] Alex Edit: I just want to tell stories just, you know,
[435.62] Alex Edit: and the thing that I like the most and every, a lot,
[438.62] Alex Edit: most of the people that I hang out with are either drone pilots or RC pilots
[443.62] Alex Edit: or full scale pilots. And so I thought, well,
[446.62] Alex Edit: what if I changed the name of the channel so that it's not about me.
[450.62] Alex Edit: It's just about, you know,
[453.62] Alex Edit: my interest in the people that I know their interest in, you know,
[458.62] Alex Edit: that's how, uh, flyers district came, came about.
[462.62] Alex Edit: I looked into like, I don't know,
[466.62] Alex Edit: like 20 different names, looked at the domains,
[469.62] Alex Edit: look at the emails if they were available and, uh, flies district.
[473.62] Alex Edit: I don't know if I could probably grow tired of that name,
[477.62] Alex Edit: but I think that it's a name that describes what the channels about.
[483.62] Alex Edit: It's about things that fly in the people that like the things that fly,
[488.62] Alex Edit: the people that fly.
[489.62] Alex Edit: So whether it's fire gliders, drones, RC aeroplanes,
[493.62] Alex Edit: or full scale airplanes, uh, that's what the channel is about.
[497.62] Alex Edit: Telling those stories.
[498.62] Alex Edit: And so that's, yeah, that is the, you know,
[503.62] Alex Edit: I call it the flying district, you know? Um, so it's just about flying.
[507.62] Alex Edit: It's about, it's all about flying, right? Uh, because I'm, uh,
[513.62] Alex Edit: it's not something that I like. It's something that I'm obsessed.
[516.62] Alex Edit: It's an obsession and everybody that I know is obsessed with, you know,
[521.62] Alex Edit: every pilot that I know, whether it's a drone pilot or any type of pilot,
[524.62] Alex Edit: they're obsessed with flying and being around other people that fly and
[529.62] Alex Edit: around people that there are things that fly. So I don't know.
[533.62] Alex Edit: I came up with that name and, uh,
[535.62] Alex Edit: I was bouncing the idea back and forth with a friend of mine and, uh,
[539.62] Alex Edit: that name kind of stuck. And so I changed the name.
[542.62] Andy: So the first time I saw you, Alex was actually on one of the first
[547.62] Andy: road to riot episodes.
[548.62] Andy: I think it's the one where they rented out the big house and yeah, yeah.
[553.62] Andy: So I watched the road to riot video and I saw you in that video on it.
[557.62] Andy: And, um, then I found your channel and then went and watched your,
[560.62] Andy: you sort of like did a kind of behind the scenes and I sort of got the
[564.62] Andy: impression that I noticed that your editing style was very similar to that
[569.62] Andy: of road to riot.
[570.62] Andy: And I kind of got the impression that you were involved some way with road
[574.62] Andy: to riot early on it.
[575.62] Andy: Is that the case where you're doing some of the editing or at the time?
[579.62] Alex Edit: Yeah. Uh, at the time I edited, I think I got, it's been a while.
[584.62] Alex Edit: I edited, I want to say two or maybe three episodes.
[589.62] Alex Edit: Yeah. The first ones weren't I? Uh, yeah,
[592.62] Alex Edit: it was like the first couple of episodes. Maybe it was two,
[596.62] Alex Edit: I know, uh, guns and drones, uh, you know, like the one where Tom,
[600.62] Jack: Tommy dove down the thing that was you as well.
[604.62] Alex Edit: I capture some of that footage. I didn't edit it. Uh,
[608.62] Alex Edit: and that episode actually came out just so perfect.
[612.62] Alex Edit: The, uh, the, uh, the, uh, damn episode. Uh,
[618.62] Alex Edit: I thought if I would have edited that,
[620.62] Alex Edit: I would have ruined it because I would have made it into a longer story.
[623.62] Alex Edit: I would have added all their things. Uh, and, and, um, son of copper,
[628.62] Alex Edit: that's, uh, what, what, uh, uh, they call Chad son. He,
[631.62] Alex Edit: he's the one that edited it. I think he's the one that edited that,

[636.62] Alex Edit: It's so on point because it's the right amount of time is the right length.

[646.62] Alex Edit: at the end of the video, he's like, you're so satisfied,

[695.62] Andy: what actually initially got me interested in road to riot and why I then
[700.62] Andy: found your channel is because I was interested in that style.
[703.62] Andy: It was, um, it was kind of like very similar to sort of how,
[707.62] Andy: cause I was watching Casey at the time as well.
[710.62] Andy: And I was a huge,
[711.62] Andy: I huge fan of Casey and I could see that in you a little bit as well.
[716.62] Andy: And, um, it was, it was kind of all new for me. So, um, how did,
[720.62] Andy: how did, how did you actually get in, how did it start with road to riot?
[723.62] Andy: How did they find you for you to,
[726.62] Alex Edit: he's a good idea.
[728.62] Alex Edit: So I, that's such a good question. So I met Chad capper.
[733.62] Alex Edit: I don't even know how many years ago,
[735.62] Alex Edit: uh, three, four years ago at a, at a drone convention.
[739.62] Alex Edit: I was speaking at a drone convention and I met Jack capper.
[742.62] Alex Edit: I knew of Jack capper because of flight tests. And so we met and, um,
[748.62] Alex Edit: then he, I want to make sure that I get that correct.
[752.62] Alex Edit: Then he invited me to, uh, he told me what he was.
[755.62] Jack: Should we see whether he's busy?
[757.62] Alex Edit: Sure. Yeah.
[758.62] Alex Edit: So he, he, uh, he told me what he was putting together and I knew,
[763.62] Alex Edit: you know, that it was going to be successful because, you know,
[767.18] Alex Edit: his idea, the way that he was thinking about it, he was doing,
[770.7] Alex Edit: I guess what you call casting. He was looking for, for people. And, uh,
[775.82] Alex Edit: right around that time is when, uh,
[779.9] Alex Edit: I was in Vegas then after that, probably a week after that, uh,
[784.02] Alex Edit: I took a trip to Vegas or maybe it was the same trip cut. I don't remember,
[788.26] Alex Edit: but then I met, uh, steel and, uh, and, uh, chat, chat, no,
[792.7] Alex Edit: like, and, uh, funny story, side story. I was looking through my drive.
[797.9] Alex Edit: I have all these hard drives.

[805.38] Alex Edit: I was looking through a footage the other day.
[808.94] Alex Edit: And so I have all these hard drives, literally buckets of hard drives.

[817.18] Alex Edit: I was plugging in hard drive cause I was looking for a shot of an airplane that
[820.54] Alex Edit: I had taken. And, uh,
[822.38] Alex Edit: I found the footage of the moment that I made a steel Davis and chat.
[827.02] Alex Edit: No, like at, uh, in Vegas on the floor, uh, of, uh,
[832.18] Jack: were they still friends back then?
[835.22] Alex Edit: Yeah, they were really good friends. Um, and so anyway, where was I going?
[840.06] Alex Edit: I digress so far away. Yeah. So, so I met Chad and then,
[845.58] Alex Edit: uh, I think Chad told me about, you know, what he was trying to do.
[848.62] Alex Edit: And then weeks later, after I had met with, uh, still Davis and chat, no,
[852.78] Alex Edit: like, uh, they were planning, uh, uh, shoot.
[857.46] Alex Edit: And so they invited me to the shoot as a, you know, one of the production people,
[861.54] Alex Edit: you know, camera and editing. And so I'm like, all right, let's go.
[865.86] Alex Edit: And so I went out and that's what that came about. And I, I, I,
[870.74] Alex Edit: I wish I was still part of it, but I, I had to,
[873.82] Alex Edit: I had to make a decision pretty early on because it's working.
[877.54] Alex Edit: The Rotoriah was taking a ton of my time, right?
[880.7] Alex Edit: And so I have this thing here that I'm doing, uh,
[884.9] Alex Edit: urban drones, my company and, uh, uh, working,
[889.78] Alex Edit: you know, the Rotoriah thing was just taking so much of my time.
[892.9] Alex Edit: So I had to take, uh, I had to make a choice. Hey, chat.
[901.94] Alex Edit: At that, right at that time, I, I, I had to make a choice. And man,
[906.82] Alex Edit: it was probably one of the toughest calls.
[909.66] Alex Edit: I remember talking to my wife about it. Like, man, I, I,
[912.78] Alex Edit: in the moment that I dropped that call to was like the absolute worst moment.
[917.7] Alex Edit: But I was at a time where, okay,
[920.1] Alex Edit: either I commit to Rotoriah full time or I commit to my company full time.
[924.58] Alex Edit: I can't do both because then I'm going to do a shitty job at both.
[928.38] Alex Edit: And so that one night I, I, I went in my garage and I had to call chat.
[933.02] Alex Edit: Now my chat, I just can't do it, man. And my God,
[936.78] Alex Edit: it was such a tough call because I really wanted to do it.
[940.78] Alex Edit: I really wanted to commit. I was, I was loving what I was doing.
[944.06] Alex Edit: I mean, I was editing and I was editing something that I really enjoyed.
[948.26] Alex Edit: And, um, you know, chat, I, he took it really cool.
[952.3] Alex Edit: I don't think it was really happy. Uh, cause of the time, right?
[957.06] Alex Edit: No, you didn't. Uh, but it was like, maybe like a Thursday or like a Saturday
[961.14] Alex Edit: night and the guns and drones episode was going to be up,
[964.7] Alex Edit: had to be up like that Monday. And I was stressing out, I mean,
[968.98] Alex Edit: I had a pile of emails from my company and a pile of things to do for my company.
[973.1] Alex Edit: And I also had this two episodes that I was working on. I'm like,
[976.26] Alex Edit: I just can't do both. And so yeah.
[981.5] Andy: Well, but what I was going to ask that question,
[984.3] Andy: but what I thought was interesting is you, you still crop up everywhere.
[988.58] Andy: You're, you're in every party's videos. Like you're at every single event
[992.66] Andy: somehow. And I think, I think a lot of people know you through that as well.
[996.9] Andy: So I, I, I guess, uh, you know, no, there's no hard feelings there cause you
[1001.14] Chad K: know, I don't think there are, I mean, not at all. No, I was very thankful.
[1006.66] Chad K: Alex, Alex took guns versus drones.
[1009.66] Chad K: That whole format was because of Alex. I mean, we, we, we refined it a lot.
[1014.42] Chad K: Like it went through like four heavy refined edit.

[1020.74] Chad K: We wanted it to be like a TV show. Um, but the problem is, is the,
[1025.42] Chad K: even the way that it was shot was so intense. Like we, it was very,
[1029.74] Chad K: Alex, you remember how much pressure there was when we were shooting it?
[1033.7] Alex Edit: Not at all. It was, it was, it was, it was, it was really intense.
[1038.5] Alex Edit: And so one, one thing that I, actually, you know what?
[1042.9] Alex Edit: I just thought about this chat. I, I, we never had this conversation.
[1046.26] Alex Edit: Something that I just thought about because I was, I was just, I was just,
[1051.46] Alex Edit: crazy show. I was just part of a, of a, of a TV show. And, uh,

[1081.86] Alex Edit: the only way that I can describe it, it's so like, it's like a box, right?

[1095.58] Chad K: since starting RotoRiot, we've had, and I'm not kidding,
[1098.58] Chad K: at least a dozen TV producers can make me some kind of offer to do something.
[1104.58] Chad K: And I've turned every one of them down and, and not,
[1109.58] Chad K: but I didn't even consider it because every one of them was, uh, we'll,
[1113.94] Chad K: we'll take you, put you on TV, we'll own part of it. And,
[1119.06] Chad K: and I'm like, wait, so,
[1120.06] Chad K: so you'll pretty much do the concept that we're already doing,
[1123.22] Chad K: but you'll take ownership from me and put it on a dining medium. Yeah.
[1128.9] Alex Edit: Like that's the thing with TV. And the way, when you watch TV,
[1133.74] Alex Edit: I don't have cable, but every now and then just this week,
[1136.5] Alex Edit: and I was out of the country and I was at a hotel and I happened to be watching TV
[1140.34] Alex Edit: and every, every now and then I get in front of a TV and I'm watching like this
[1145.38] Alex Edit: just this style of editing and this style of, it's so boring.
[1149.82] Alex Edit: And so just like predictable, very predictable.
[1155.82] Chad K: It's the chocolate chip cookie mix and they put in raisins and then they put in
[1161.82] Chad K: chocolate chips and then they put in walnuts and like,
[1165.14] Chad K: but it's the same freaking cookie. Yes. It's just so.

[1856.52] Alex Edit: That's what's supposed to happen for you to find a way, figure out a way to get over that wall.
[1862.04] Alex Edit: Because in a year or two years, three years, you're going to see that obstacle and you're

[1869.88] Alex Edit: You know, I mean, look at every everything that has happened in your life.
[1873.0] Alex Edit: If you look back, I know a lot of people and myself and I know a lot of you guys
[1878.44] Alex Edit: can say you look at either mistakes that you've made or bad things that have happened to you.
[1883.24] Alex Edit: And then you see what, you know, how that made you who you are today.
[1887.8] Alex Edit: You probably wouldn't change a lot of things, bad things that happened to you.
[1891.56] Alex Edit: You, you would want to change them at the time that they happen.
[1894.04] Alex Edit: But now looking back, you probably don't want to change them because they made you who you are today.
