[221.28] NJ: um you have posted uh an article earlier about these uh new rules and bits kicking in and
[229.04] NJ: various updates so why don't you um kick off with that so we can get that talked about the way

[256.18] Frank: has been uh for quite a while they plan to have a uh height limit for model aircraft in the uk um
[267.22] Frank: well i mean it's not that long in the scheme of things but we've known about it it's been coming
[272.02] Frank: that from the 30th of july um model aircraft or all uavs would be limited to 400 feet regardless
[281.62] Frank: of weight regardless of anything yeah um without exemptions from the caa
[290.1] Frank: and the bmfa and fpbuk and the saa i think which is a scottish error modelers association
[302.58] Frank: and the lma which is a large model association um they all sat down with the caa the civil
[311.14] Frank: aviation authority um to try and work out a way where all the members of those associations
[319.78] Frank: could carry on doing what they've been doing um without being limited to the new height limits
[329.22] Frank: and they managed to get it uh released and all published and everything uh on monday the 23rd
[337.94] Frank: of july so that will be ready to come into place on the 30th of july but interestingly
[344.58] Frank: it specifically uh doesn't include multi rotors so regardless of whether anything's fpv or not fpv
[356.9] Frank: or got stay you know uh gyros or not gyros or gps or whatever if it's got more than one
[366.82] Frank: rotor providing lift then it's limited to 400 feet without another exemption
[375.14] Frank: so that's kind of that well i'm sorry jack but that's um you're gonna have to do some editing
[385.63] Frank: here because this has made me really quite angry um it's gone crazy he's only smiling mostly
[393.79] Frank: frightish war yeah um so yeah i've been uh on the show i've said i know it's all right lads
[404.27] Frank: we'll all get behind the bmfa and the bmfa will fight our corner and we'll all be in with the
[409.79] Frank: you know we're in the the fold of the aero modelers now um they're accepting us we're allowed to fly
[415.55] Frank: out a load of fields we're being involved they've got a uh an fpv um part of the um
[424.51] Frank: achievements and they've got a multi-rotor a cert and b cert and you know they're including us
[430.51] Frank: and now they've gone actually no you lot can hang out in the cold um we're gonna we're not
[438.27] Frank: gonna include you in with us which yeah that's that's just annoying because at the moment it
[448.19] Frank: only is only this 400 foot to 1000 foot uh band that multi-rotors aren't allowed to fly in
[457.15] Frank: and that's the only difference at the moment but over the next year they're going to be drawing
[463.55] Frank: up rules about uh registrations they're going to be drawing up rules about um uh the sort of
[470.59] Frank: licensing ish so examinations online or through an app or whatever they come up with and a host
[478.11] Frank: of other rules are going to be talked about and tabled and all that kind of stuff and this is
[485.71] Frank: okay i might be wrong but as far as i can tell this is the first time anywhere in the world
[492.19] Frank: that multi-rotors have been legislated differently from any other kind of uav or model aircraft um
[500.91] Frank: when i contacted the bmfa about this the other day and was like it was good idea uh first of all
[509.71] Frank: the cheeky try to blame it on brussels and say oh it's the eaa or er as a you know categories
[521.28] Frank: and specifics and whatever and it's it's part of that and i went no it's not there's no mention of
[527.28] Frank: that in any of those documents you can do find you know find word in all of those documents
[533.76] Frank: there's not a single mention of multi-rotor quadcopter rotorcraft any of this you've
[540.48] Frank: you know this has come out of this new exemption like this is a first this is a precedent a new
[546.72] NJ: precedent well i think that's probably the the real the real problem here it's not so much that
[552.4] NJ: the 400 foot rule is is an issue i think it's sensible but high and i never need to feel the
[559.12] NJ: need to need to go higher than that anyway that's not the problem it's the fact that
[563.12] NJ: it's the precedent of of how we're moving forward because once this kind of new
[567.84] NJ: model apartheid is in place yeah this is paved the way for however yeah how everything else is
[574.48] NJ: it's going to be an us and them um and it certainly does make me because recently i
[579.28] NJ: went through renewing my insurance and i this is the first time i've now come back to the BMFA i
[585.04] NJ: was always BMFA when i was flying all my helicopters and planes for decades but i then went with FPV UK
[591.52] NJ: and now i've gone back to the BMFA and i'm kind of regretting it because as soon as that's up i'll
[596.96] NJ: be going if if this is their attitude but yeah it's it's that's not good that's not a good thing
[602.32] Frank: at all yeah so the cheeky bastard tried to blame it on on the european legislation on Brussels
[608.32] Frank: and i picked him up on that and said no it's not um and and for the other reason that
[615.28] Frank: a few months ago BMFA and CAA were claiming victory for having rewritten that bit of
[622.0] Frank: that bit of uh draft legislation to be sensible um so now they're saying oh Brussels published
[629.28] Frank: this bit that we wrote for them and that now that we're just following that and it's like well
[634.56] Frank: first of all you wrote it and second of all it doesn't include anything about multi-roaders
[639.04] Frank: or rotorcraft or any of this new stuff you've come up with um so then they admitted well actually no
[644.96] Frank: it's just it's purely political um we needed something uh quickly that everyone could agree
[652.32] Frank: on this is a definition of a drone um that we can sort of say oh look that looks like a drone
[659.04] Frank: that doesn't look like a drone and and that's where this has come from um which i think is
[667.68] Frank: um frank swore again yeah you've you've had frank now you've got tough frank um
[677.04] NJ: i mean i wonder how much of the the the model again it's just everything so damn vague isn't
[682.24] NJ: it in terms of how they're specifying what's what and they clearly try and be vague on purpose with
[687.92] NJ: lots of gray areas uh for argument and i think this is part of the problem i mean if you're
[693.68] NJ: someone who's part of that model club and you've built a i don't know let's say uh you know spent
[698.96] NJ: two thousand pounds four thousand pounds on a twin engine chinook helicopter now that's
[705.44] NJ: suddenly that's multi-rotor right so that's going to fall under this class and all of a sudden that
[709.84] NJ: thing's got to be following the same so that person's going to be upset as well i i don't
[715.28] NJ: know this just feels like uh yeah uh the usual thing of of just you know being vague on purpose
[722.96] NJ: and when they have finally given some direction to it they've just monumentally messed it up and
[729.04] NJ: there's i don't know if this is them testing to see what the backlash is
[732.72] NJ: or whether they genuinely think this is the right way to go forward farming it from me to say hey i
[739.2] Curry: don't trust a bfma to uh to look after people i think they're they're in protectionist mode
[745.04] Curry: as as i mentioned several months ago yes can we go back to the fight the power thing now and just
[750.48] Frank: so renegades and it's not fine yeah this is exactly i want to apologize to all our listeners
[756.88] Frank: who i said oh no it's the bmfa have turned over a new leaf and they're accepting us in just like
[762.56] Frank: they did with the uh the helis um and now not only have they not fought our corner here and
[770.56] Frank: thrown us out in the cold um at this point but uh there's also an an interesting news article
[778.32] Frank: that popped up um was shared around a bit um on bbc south uh yesterday um where a massive
[790.56] Frank: off 3d heli went smashing through uh someone's house where there were builders on the outside
[798.0] Frank: of it and narrowly almost you know got hit by this this thing um i think it was like a 700 size heli
[807.04] Frank: um and the news coverage they interviewed uh dave phipps of the bmfa and he said he starts
[815.36] Frank: bringing up drones it's like hold on mate you just said that you know like that this is the
[824.08] Frank: two things are separate and now you're you're bringing drones into it when it's a
[828.32] NJ: helicopter um it's ridiculous and there's plenty of uh sadly there are plenty of of
[837.36] NJ: actual deaths related to 3d helicopters there's been a decapitation there's one in florida uh
[844.32] NJ: years back and york yeah there's there's been some nasty accidents from you know
[849.44] NJ: their giant carbon prop 700 size spinning bands saw in the air that you know i'm not saying that
[856.16] NJ: the what we fly aren't dangerous and can't be abused but at the end of the day we've still not
[862.48] NJ: got the record of of of uh of problems that that both planes and helicopters have and it's just
[870.4] NJ: unfair that they jumped in and penalized us like this um it's that as you say it all comes down
[875.76] NJ: that same thing it's the precedent that they've set moving forward that is now a massive uphill
[880.32] Tony: struggle for us exactly is everyone going to change insurance next year well the thing is
[885.04] Frank: with bvuk we're in the the same uh you know the same conversations um so i i spoke with simon dale
[893.2] Frank: about this um as well and got his opinion on it um and i will try and dig out the email as i got
[900.4] Frank: back yeah i'll be interested in simon's opinion um but right let me let me bring it up before i
[908.88] Frank: shoot them out of um so um he was uh saying that it's um to because the the government
[926.67] Frank: basically it is the same sort of thing the government is worried about people being
[931.71] Frank: allowed to fly drones um and this is an easy way of of categorizing them basically um
[940.43] Frank: um uh and it was difficult to to get the other sorts of models and fpv
[951.39] Frank: separated out um and this is uh this is just one that basically from what i can tell is
[959.39] Frank: is an issue of time uh they'd been given the deadline of the 30th of july where
[963.95] Frank: if they didn't agree something then everyone's and they decided that rather than uh rather than
[974.35] Frank: risk off uh the rest of their members they would chuck us out of the balloon to be honest um so
[984.03] Tony: yeah and i think it's the same frank frank he's angry i am is frank he's really angry it's you've
[991.79] Frank: never sworn you've sworn seven times it's it's just unbelievable it's uh no this is not the
[1002.27] Frank: problem so you know the the airline pilots and whoever said ah it's uavs and bmfa were like whoa
[1009.87] Frank: not all um and then you know they said model aircraft are fine and then they've gone oh
[1018.03] Frank: not all model aircraft it's ones with only one rotor or wings um i've got absolutely no basis
[1026.59] NJ: behind uh saying it's the the method of i mean it it's so anti-aircraft engineering to think in
[1035.15] NJ: that way as it is because you add rotors and you start adding more and more points of lift you're
[1042.59] NJ: adding redundancy it doesn't make sense to suddenly say that this is an angle for why
[1048.43] NJ: it's it's just down to the fact that um you know that the multi-rotors are accessible and
[1055.79] NJ: so easy to fly for a much larger market and it's unfortunately it's the the maplins warriors and
[1062.43] NJ: people who take them out and do stupid things that are well that's the thing it's it's all down to
[1068.43] Frank: the whole spirit of of all of this is they're trying to uh you know pick up the people who do
[1077.71] Frank: stupid things um and it's it's trying to find something where very clearly these the people
[1085.15] Frank: who do stupid things and all of these other people are generally trustworthy and you know
[1093.55] Frank: we've we've been put on on this side of oh we're not trusted um and i think a lot of us if we were
[1102.43] Frank: given our way would say ah well it's like you say it's the you know the people who go down
[1106.75] Frank: to maplins and buy something ready to fly and fly that um when actually thinking about it
[1114.11] Frank: the majority of those people fly it perfectly fine and aren't you know that ridiculous about it
[1121.79] Frank: um especially given you know particularly DJI's whole setup of geofencing and all that kind of
[1127.55] Frank: stuff it makes it very easy you can comply it but it's also very easy to follow the rules um
[1134.75] Frank: you know you get a leaflet with it saying don't fly in these places um you get the
[1141.47] Frank: all the things up on the screen telling you where you can and can't fly um and it's you know it's
[1147.87] Frank: fairly easy for a non you know someone who actually is going to listen to the rules to
[1155.63] Frank: you know to follow them so i think actually this this whole thing is is a witch hunt because
[1162.75] Frank: what we're really trying to find is people who break the rules and if they're breaking the rules
[1167.55] Frank: then why you know we can find find them on that we don't need to go around saying ah
[1173.79] Frank: other people who ride bicycles have been known to smoke a joint therefore we're going to ban
[1181.95] Frank: bicycles it's just completely unrelated it doesn't matter it is what cannabis is holy
[1190.43] Frank: what did you manage to find simon's response uh so yeah i've got i found it it's right here hang on um
[1207.95] Frank: yeah um so hi i said hi simon any chance you can shed some light on the reasoning behind the
[1215.07] Frank: blanket exclusion of multi-rotors from the exemption thanks uh simon said hi andrew because
[1220.51] Frank: the government has introduced new legislation to stop drones flying too high there was no way they
[1226.19] Frank: would allow a loophole where people could just join the associations and be exempt from their
[1230.59] Frank: shiny new legislation it was very difficult almost didn't happen to persuade them to
[1236.59] Frank: not also catch all other kinds of model flying and fpv in their new uh legislation uh the old fpv
[1243.87] Frank: exemption will also be reissued from a thousand feet to 400 feet um and so multi-rotor fpv flying
[1251.55] Curry: can be done under that only don't it's exactly what it allows people to join the organization
[1259.87] Curry: and get exemption if they're not flying multi-rotor so again what's what's the difference other than
[1266.11] Curry: the fact that some people say it's harder but you can buy a parrot uh we can't even chuck that in
[1272.99] Curry: yeah well they've they've put up that special exemption about no no automatic uh no automotive
[1278.67] Curry: what's it called autonomous mode over 400 feet to try and exclude that or automated or automatic
[1286.27] Frank: flight but if you've got that then why do you need to say multi-rotors it's just you know
[1294.35] Frank: the problem is you know if if you are trying to deal with people that buy something out of a shop
[1299.71] Frank: and don't know what they're doing and just fly it um without any skill or any knowledge or any
[1304.91] Frank: background on it then the automated autonomous flying is what you're getting at the multi-rotors
[1311.63] Frank: are incidental because we could have a helicopter with a you know uh i don't know a naza on it or
[1319.47] Frank: something or you could have a like you say the the parrot fixed wing which could you know you
[1325.31] Frank: just chuck it in the air and it'll go through waypoints and all of that market yeah and the
[1329.39] NJ: other thing is even pretty much like 90 percent of helicopters now uh are fly barless and they're
[1335.95] NJ: all you're you've got exactly the same digital connection between you and the quadcopter as
[1341.95] NJ: between you and the helicopter as as you have with a quadcopter is still going through a
[1345.23] NJ: PID controller it's still using an interpretation of what your stick input is computing that and
[1350.99] NJ: stabilizing that in exactly the same way your quadcopter does but with different set of outputs
[1355.71] NJ: there's there's no huge difference i mean if someone suddenly takes a wing out and does all
[1360.03] NJ: this stuff and again uses return at home and flying waypoints and all that it's it's such
[1365.55] NJ: a ridiculous argument yeah it's nothing more than than trying to to zone in on us as a group yeah
[1372.91] Frank: and um yeah this is is horrific really but yeah um but again to to that point you know if if we
[1382.19] Frank: started saying automated then i don't know is that really fair either like i you know if if
[1390.35] Frank: you have someone with uh you know with a like with they had at the um your mini air show with
[1398.75] Frank: the south ampton the big thing where they had a radio there holding it on a switch and it was
[1403.23] Frank: doing whatever it was doing and they were ready a flick of a switch to take it out of automated
[1408.27] Frank: mode and and fly it themselves um i don't really see that as being any less safe to be honest but
[1415.79] Frank: anyway there have been uh a load of questions in the chat uh there's a few of them that i think
[1421.63] Frank: are probably worth answering most important of which is can we do anything about this um
[1427.87] Frank: and besides like things threatening people um although i might end up doing it um
[1439.23] Frank: the best way is that uh i mean first of all if you're in a in a club uh like any bmfa club or
[1449.23] Frank: something like that please contact the people who are in there who can represent you uh to the
[1455.71] Frank: larger bmfa association and let them know that actually you're an error modeler who flies
[1462.27] Frank: multi-rotors and you're a bit paved that bmfa haven't stuck up for your corner when they're
[1469.63] Frank: supposed to represent all all of us um and all that we do um and secondly probably be worth
[1478.67] Frank: emailing the bmfa um or whoever your association is if it's fpbuk, saa, lma and let them know as
[1488.19] Frank: well that actually you don't like this idea of being separated out from from the rest of the
[1493.23] Frank: ranks and you should uh you know be involved um if you're part of the bfpvra um then i would
[1502.67] Frank: suggest you let them know as well so that they've got a backing um you know and they can go to the
[1509.31] Frank: bmfa and go uh we've got quite a few people that are a bit unhappy with being separated out um
[1517.79] Frank: there's also a consultation that has been opened up by the government about some new legislation
[1525.63] Frank: that's set from from this as far as i understand but i still need to actually read around it and
[1531.47] Frank: get my head around it it was only released this morning and i haven't had plans to go through it
[1535.31] Frank: in depth but there is a consultation uh on uh the government website which i will make sure is
[1543.15] Frank: posted to the ldo page so facebook.com forward slash let's drone out so that you can give them
[1550.59] Frank: a piece of your mind uh in that consultation about whatever other bull crap they've come up for that
[1556.75] Frank: um are we allowed to swear at them uh i would recommend not swearing
[1564.27] Frank: to them uh i think that might not help our case okay i would suggest um what happens if we set
[1571.39] Frank: ourselves on fire that's just that's not gonna make you look like a well uh well trained and
[1581.79] Curry: well uh just do it under 400 please jack yeah can i just make like a gift of frank saying

[1743.34] Frank: so you know you can keep it varied i'm sure but uh yeah just go and get a lot of footage this
[1748.46] Curry: weekend personally what i've been working on doing is frying my gopro by hand really high
[1755.34] Curry: like it looks like it's in control and spinning and stuff i might be releasing some of that
[1760.14] Frank: ah you've been working on your free flight models exactly that's just throwing yeah yeah free flight
[1766.3] Curry: models or anything that's not very safe is allowed like not having an autopilot brilliant
[1771.9] Curry: that goes out of control big big headies out of control no problem and just free flight models
[1777.34] Curry: not a problem well the problem probably is being in control is drones you see so yeah it's probably
[1785.5] Curry: drones jamming jamming the signal and causing issues with the helicopter pilots yep um so yeah
[1795.1] Frank: i i i would say get your so this is our lot last weekend we can do a thousand foot
[1801.42] Frank: yes so let's go do something we want to dive the i360 in britain yeah how am i
[1810.62] Frank: ignoring the rules anyway so it doesn't matter yeah but what if you did it with a you mean from
[1816.94] Frank: 50 meters away a parallel dive yes but it's got a very narrow field of view it doesn't look like it
[1823.74] Curry: there's some weird optical effects that sometimes happens it looks like you're right next to it
[1827.34] Frank: yeah we've got a like five mil lens on it but it's just uh you know we've got a fisheye effect
[1833.74] Frank: post in post i imagine what i might receive is lots of anonymous footage that gets sent to me
[1839.18] Curry: and ask me to edit it and put it on youtube and being being the very altruistic uh video editor
[1846.86] Frank: that you are uh you will feel obliged to publish it i would do that for free yeah the original

[3231.47] NJ: recorders are sort of starting to become popular as they're getting easier to shoehorn into the
[3236.35] NJ: smaller stuff um but still most of those dvrs will only get you a 25 frames per second so
[3242.03] NJ: if it's got a 1080p 30 fps sensor and it's it can't surely it's got to be the preferable
[3247.79] Curry: quality to go for one of those it's trying i mean it wasn't that many years ago that we thought
[3253.39] Curry: fly do you remember the little 808 uh with the the c style lens i've still got one on a wing
[3260.11] Curry: um the little keychain cameras uh working at 720p and you were getting quite reasonable stuff
[3268.19] Curry: of those and again the the light handling on the on on the dynamic range was very bad but you were
[3274.11] Curry: still getting reasonable picture and i was thinking if that's like as good as that for 12 13 quid
[3281.15] Curry: it's hard to really go that wrong on it really yeah i agree i mean even even if you crash and
[3286.59] Curry: it falls off it's like well any more than an hour searching site i'll just buy another one

[3304.03] NJ: mini or the split micro it's very similar to that i think smaller and lighter slightly bigger lens
[3309.47] NJ: now i've had a look at the hd footage of that thing and i was shocked at how good it looks
[3314.11] NJ: the hd footage looks amazing but the fpv footage is what concerns me because the fpv side of it

[3328.03] Curry: as far as the fpv live footage i thought it was was that one or two i only had the one yeah so

[3380.43] Curry: work i mean it worked as a sort of you know i'm gonna just fly around quite casually and try and
[3386.43] Curry: you know just get some footage and not have to have a gopro but as soon as you wanted to
[3391.07] Curry: really use it as a as a proper camera and do some proper flying with it it sort of let you
[3395.95] Curry: down because that detail that you didn't have trying to sort of go through tree gaps and that
[3400.83] Curry: that sort of fine detail that you you just can't pick up the edges of stuff well you know yeah
[3406.27] NJ: well it's it's something that's still it's like so much of it it's all still maturing isn't it

[3455.95] NJ: buggy um i've seen several different for instance the run cam the one that gopro managed to get
[3462.11] NJ: shut down the run cam three was it three they called it um the orange cube yeah yeah i've seen
[3468.99] NJ: my one had this problem where it was constantly shutting off um so i ended up landing and there
[3475.71] NJ: was like half the file had been recorded just turned itself off in mid-flight i've had so many
[3480.19] NJ: reports of that from other people and others that have been fine my friend's one uh my friend rob
[3485.47] NJ: we went out flying the other day and i was convinced it was down to this just overheating
[3490.19] NJ: and it not having very good thermal management and we went out and flew in that 33 degrees of heat
[3495.23] NJ: and his was doing this problem before this flight and then we went out every single flight
[3500.27] NJ: it recorded each one start to finish in in the blistering heat so it might have been the
[3504.75] NJ: opposite way around might be the cold affected it but yeah there's there's i see a lot of
[3509.31] NJ: inconsistencies in run cam stuff and i think one problem for that is the fact that run cam just
[3514.03] NJ: pushed stuff out the door so damn fast and i think they could just do with backing off and

[3642.51] Curry: i picked up jello which wasn't there in the micro swift that's that's a problem isn't it
[3647.79] NJ: definitely a trait of cmos uh cmos cameras that you can't really do to do too much to get rid of
[3654.27] Frank: that but there's there's the new pro swift 2 and micro swift 3 which are both being produced still

[3667.39] Curry: a little lens yeah it's got the m8 lens the micro swift 3 hasn't it or it's got the m12 which which
[3673.31] Curry: way around is it is it m8 small one m12 the normal one something like that i can't remember
