[1042.63] AndyRC: The only thing is that, yeah, it came flash for the international version as well.

[1050.71] AndyRC: because I don't think we're actually going to be able to use the international version
[1054.27] AndyRC: because it's whereas on the other free sky stuff, we can use the international version

[1060.55] AndyRC: So it could be a problem for having to flash all the receivers.

[1066.11] Curry: I did notice one thing is that I was looking at getting some of these in.
[1071.71] Curry: I saw that it was a firm where it was called something like the Flex firmware or something
[1077.35] Curry: which will allow you to switch between the two eight six eight or nine fifteen
[1083.59] Curry: at various power levels.
[1084.83] Curry: So it's kind of like you can you can have the best of both worlds.
[1088.47] Curry: You can run at whatever frequency you like it, whatever power you like.
[1092.91] AndyRC: Yeah, but don't you have to flash the firmware, though, to the yeah,
[1095.99] AndyRC: you have to flash the firmware, obviously, every time to the receiver as well.
[1099.39] AndyRC: Oh, well, like crossfire, which does it automatically.
[1102.07] Curry: Oh, I see. Because because the receivers wired into it, that's then a pain to rip out.
[1106.43] NJ: Exactly. That's very strange to be doing that across those two frequencies that wide apart.
[1110.91] NJ: I mean, because they're doing most modern RCS doing spreads, spread spectrum frequency hopping
[1116.59] NJ: anyway, but within a much narrower corridor.
[1119.07] NJ: So that's kind of weird that they offer it over such differences.
[1124.19] Curry: 900. They're not saying you can have the spread finger, but they're saying basically
[1128.75] Curry: because it was that you had to flash the firmware either at nine fifteen or eight
[1134.11] Curry: six eight. And then the power levels were limited depending on what you use.
[1138.59] Curry: I've come out with this firmware, which allows you to basically hot swap between the two.

[1145.11] Curry: So it's kind of like, OK, this is the official C version, which will run at twenty five
[1149.55] Curry: million watts. But we've bought out this version for we don't know who, but run on
[1153.51] NJ: whenever you like. But I thoroughly recommend to anyone watching this in the EU.
[1157.51] NJ: Please stay on eight six eight because we we upset enough people don't don't start
[1162.71] NJ: using mobile network. Also, I think I don't think you're going to be able to is what
[1166.67] NJ: I'm saying. And technically, eight six eight's a very fractionally longer and lower
[1171.75] NJ: frequency and therefore slightly better.

[1176.47] Edd: Some of the phrases just put in the chat regarding the flex firmware, he's saying that

[1979.12] Edd: The police force, when they are given any new legislation,
[1983.12] Edd: are faced with changing the procedures on the grounds,
[1988.12] Edd: have an enormous amount of admin,
[1990.12] Edd: and the knowledge, interesting part, which I didn't really appreciate,
[1994.12] Edd: is when you've got specialist knowledge,
[1996.12] Edd: several things tend to happen in the forces,
[1998.12] Edd: one of which that we've seen already is that you get whole new departments set up.
[2005.12] Edd: So, I think the MET and I think Dorset have a drone section to their force,
[2016.12] Edd: and that's given them a couple of things,
[2019.12] Edd: well, it's a bit of a publicity stunt,
[2022.12] Edd: it gives them some eyes on the skies,
[2024.12] Edd: but it also means that some of the officers on that force
[2031.12] Edd: actually have a proper working knowledge of all the legislation
[2036.12] Edd: that affects us in its entirety,
[2040.12] Edd: which is great because some forces are going to be in a position
[2045.12] Edd: where at the end of the phone they've got an expert
[2048.12] Edd: that when they get a complaint coming in they can consult
[2053.12] Edd: and they'll get an idea as to whether they need to respond to it or not.
[2058.12] Edd: So, they can judge whether the complaint,
[2061.12] Edd: say, Mrs Higgins from number 53 is complaining about a drone
[2065.12] Edd: being flown in the park and she just doesn't like it
[2068.12] Edd: and that's the basic complaint,
[2070.12] Edd: or whether there's actually a sort of genuine threat to,
[2075.12] Edd: goodness knows what, but they're able to make that call.
[2079.12] Edd: Not all forces have got that at the moment,
[2082.12] Edd: and certainly we don't really know what the new legislation's going to look like,
[2086.12] Edd: other than I think we're going to have to register.
[2089.12] Edd: There's been some guidance released on various heights and whatnot.

[2256.12] Edd: that an officer on a beat will actually know the legislation off-heart.
[2261.12] Edd: So there's a couple of recommendations that have come off the back of that,
[2264.12] Edd: and certainly in the initial days, and this applies more to the freelance pilots.

[2275.12] Edd: One of the suggestions might well be to actually carry a cheat sheet
[2280.12] Edd: of some key facts that sort of prove that it's as long as you're flying
[2286.12] Edd: within the letter of the law, which of course everyone does,
[2290.12] Edd: but it's a sort of proof that it's not sort of an opposition way
[2296.12] Edd: if you ever end up chatting to a police officer,
[2299.12] Edd: but bear in mind that that police officer that comes responds to a complaint
[2303.12] Edd: or may happen to be wandering past an area
[2307.12] Edd: is probably going to be as much in the dark as any other member of the public.
[2311.12] Edd: So if you can provide actual letter of the law to them in a helpful manner,
[2316.12] Edd: so actually under this line of legislation or this code here,

[2386.12] NJ: to be able to go out and just have that in your bag as part of your flight kit

[2400.12] NJ: and wouldn't it be great even if you did have an officer not in the know

[2484.12] Edd: This is the new sector policing that was brought in a number of years ago.
[2488.12] Edd: And the sector policing, when it had numbers,
[2491.12] Edd: when police had numbers and had many patrol cars, it was great.
[2495.12] Edd: But when there's so few of them going round,
[2498.12] Edd: their priority is very much saving people's lives,
[2502.12] Edd: saving kids, responding to domestic violence,
[2508.12] Edd: the higher-grade crimes more in their focus.
[2514.12] Edd: So that, then, my next question was,
[2518.12] Edd: well, what would it take for a police unit to be diverted
[2525.12] Edd: on a, say, if there is a shift where there are lower numbers, what would it take?
[2530.12] Edd: And he said, frame it in two ways.
[2533.12] Edd: There's a sort of difference between a 15-minute response
[2536.12] Edd: and an hour's response.
[2539.12] Edd: And activities that take a 15-minute response
[2542.12] Edd: typically will involve anything to do with children.
[2547.12] Edd: So flying in playgrounds, for example,
[2550.12] Edd: might well induce a 15-minute response if there are enough complaints.
[2558.12] Edd: So that was something that, you know,
[2561.12] Edd: I know a lot of freestyle pilots, certainly in America,
[2563.12] Edd: you see them sort of flying around playground equipment and all the rest of it.
[2566.12] Edd: And it is fun.
[2567.12] Edd: But it might be when the new legislation comes in that might,
[2570.12] Edd: and the press is going to pick up on this,
[2573.12] Edd: you know, it's the press that's already picking up on it.
[2576.12] Edd: But as it gets more pumped into the areas like playgrounds,
[2579.12] Edd: it might be sort of a bit of a torch for some people to start phoning complaints in.
[2587.12] Edd: But on another side of things,
[2590.12] Edd: one of the guys mentioned that, again,
[2594.12] Edd: helping the police in this way might be a good thing.
[2598.12] Edd: So if you're planning a day's flying and you know you're going to be in areas
[2603.12] Edd: and you know you're within your rights to fly,
[2605.12] Edd: he actually suggested phoning the local control room.
[2608.12] Edd: Now, we're all going to be registered,
[2610.12] Edd: so you're going to be able to give your drone registration number
[2613.12] Edd: unless you're flying under 250.
[2616.12] Edd: But regardless,
[2618.12] Edd: actually informing the local control room of what it is you're doing,
[2622.12] Edd: where you're going to be.
[2624.12] Edd: So when they get a call through and they get a complaint
[2627.12] Edd: and it's got nothing to do with anybody's safety
[2630.12] Edd: and you're just enjoying a day's flying on the cliffs
[2632.12] Edd: or whatever, you're on a beach and you're not being an idiot
[2635.12] Edd: and you're not flying over people, you know,
[2637.12] Edd: being good flyers.
[2640.12] Edd: You can get a reference number from the control room
[2643.12] Edd: and when the control room responds to a complaint,
[2646.12] Edd: they can say, oh, yeah, we know the guys are operating there.
[2651.12] Edd: So, you know, they've already got the information
[2653.12] Edd: and they may be able to back that off
[2655.12] Edd: and then not have to divert much needed resources
[2659.12] Edd: for someone to go and see someone.
[2661.12] Edd: So I thought that was quite interesting.
[2664.12] Edd: Now, I don't know what you guys think.
[2666.12] Edd: Would you guys ever sort of be on-minded to phone ahead
[2670.12] Edd: for a day's freestyle flying?
[2673.12] NJ: I think that's probably something,
[2675.12] NJ: because there's this danger of taking the recreation out of it
[2680.12] NJ: when all of a sudden there's this level of preparation
[2682.12] NJ: and organization put into it.
[2684.12] NJ: And I think that would probably scare people off
[2686.12] NJ: or maybe get people to think more about.
[2689.12] NJ: And certainly something I've been more recently focusing on
[2692.12] NJ: is the best possible performing freestyle quad.
[2695.12] NJ: I can build under 250 grams
[2698.12] NJ: to kind of escape having to deal with this, you know, responsibility.
[2703.12] NJ: And I say that in that way because, as I said,
[2707.12] NJ: there's a whole load of legislation
[2709.12] NJ: that's potentially affecting as a preventative measure
[2713.12] NJ: for something of a problem that's not there, if you like.
[2716.12] NJ: There isn't a big history of accidents
[2719.12] NJ: and a history of aircraft getting blown out of the sky by drones.
[2723.12] NJ: So this is what's making this all particularly unattractive, I feel.
[2729.12] NJ: But, yeah, I think if it was more,
[2732.12] NJ: say if there was a group of five or six of you
[2735.12] NJ: and you were going to one area and you knew it was fine
[2737.12] NJ: and there's going to be minimum people around
[2739.12] NJ: and as part of organizing that,
[2741.12] NJ: it was just put a quick call into the local tower
[2744.12] NJ: to let them know you're going to be there doing that.
[2747.12] NJ: I don't think it would be... I wouldn't find that a problem.
[2750.12] NJ: I think the more accessible way would be the app.

[2795.12] Edd: the police don't want to stop us having fun.
[2798.12] Edd: They just want to know more about it
[2800.12] Edd: and any information we can provide to them.
[2804.12] Curry: So is the feeling, Ed, that because people have taken this on board
[2809.12] Curry: in one of two ways, a whole bunch of them have said
[2812.12] Curry: it doesn't really matter what this conversation comes out
[2815.12] Curry: because the police are overstretched.
[2817.12] Curry: They can't investigate burglaries properly.
[2819.12] Curry: They're not going to have time to go and look at drones.
[2821.12] Curry: And on the other side, you've got the more cynical things thinking,
[2824.12] Curry: actually, police are about getting arrest targets and getting things done.

[2833.12] Curry: are they going to go out because they know,
[2835.12] Curry: oh, they're going to be stood there flying stuff.

[2843.12] Edd: And I have to say, in all the conversations I've ever had with my friends
[2846.12] Edd: who are on the force, I've never heard any of them mention arrest targets.

[2900.12] Edd: the speeding motorists thing, for example,
[2902.12] Edd: is there's a whole section of the police called traffic.
[2906.12] Edd: That's their job.
[2908.12] Edd: That's what they do.
[2909.12] Edd: They are dedicated traffic officers.
[2911.12] Edd: For your local constabulary, certainly in the rural areas,
[2915.12] Edd: you've got to think of it in a practical term.
[2917.12] Edd: What's more important to a police officer protecting the community,
[2921.12] Edd: saving a child from domestic abuse
[2924.12] Edd: or going out and making their numbers look better?
[2928.12] Edd: Now, I'll tell you from personal conversations,
[2930.12] Edd: saving a child from domestic abuse is far higher on the list
[2934.12] Edd: than fluffing numbers for the media.
[2936.12] Jack: What happens if they mistake Tony for a child and me abusing him?

[2975.12] Edd: that they're not going to be coming after us.
[2980.12] Edd: Certainly with the amount of numbers they've got at the moment
[2983.12] Edd: and they've got far more devastating things in this world to worry about.
[2988.12] Edd: They do have to respond to complaints. They absolutely do.
[2992.12] Edd: But it's like I say, it's the difference between a 15-minute response
[2996.12] Edd: and an hour's response.
[2999.12] Edd: All the advice across the line is, you know, don't endanger lives,
[3003.12] Edd: don't give the impression that you're spying on children.

[3012.12] Edd: But there was something really positive that,
[3016.12] Edd: I think it's probably my last thing that came on to,
[3020.12] Edd: out of conversation, should I say.
[3022.12] Edd: So, the police actually get guidance from, across all forces,
[3028.12] Edd: so, pan-force guidance from a central position
[3032.12] Edd: and that is the College of Policing.
[3034.12] Edd: They set the police's kind of conduct
[3037.12] Edd: and they're also going to become the professional body for the police.
[3041.12] Edd: And that professional body, like any professional body,
[3045.12] Edd: has sort of continuing professional development.
[3049.12] Edd: And one of the suggestions that came out of conversation was actually,
[3052.12] Edd: well, why don't the community create a video
[3057.12] Edd: showing what it's like to be an FPV pilot
[3061.12] Edd: and what we do to keep ourselves entertained,
[3065.12] Edd: but also show, well, these are the guidelines we're adhering to.
[3068.12] Edd: We know these regulations.
[3070.12] Edd: And this could come from the community as a whole, you know.
[3073.12] Edd: I'm kind of tempted to throw out a little challenge to the community
[3077.12] Edd: to sort of send in a 30-second clip of what you love about the hobby
[3082.12] Edd: and what you do and where you fly
[3086.12] Edd: and why is it that that location is okay to fly.
[3092.12] Edd: Because there's a potential for a video to be submitted
[3096.12] Edd: as a professional development video to the College of Policing
[3099.12] Edd: that actually then gets sent out as an advisory
[3103.12] Edd: to all officers that are on patrol.
[3106.12] Edd: So they kind of know what they're dealing with,
[3108.12] Edd: not with the drones and the legislation and the red tape,
[3111.12] Edd: but the people who enjoy our side of the hobby that are flying
[3115.12] Edd: for those reasons, which aren't these cameras in the sky with GPS
[3120.12] Edd: and are used for nefarious purposes.
[3123.12] Edd: We're just a bunch of hobbyists having fun,
[3125.12] Edd: and we appear to be slightly left behind with the legislation.
[3129.12] Edd: So when this goes through, and if it hasn't really worked in our favour,
[3133.12] Edd: this could actually potentially be one way in which we could inform
[3138.12] Edd: the police as a community together.
[3140.12] Edd: So I don't know what you guys thought about doing something a bit proactive
[3144.12] Edd: and actually giving the police some information from our side.
[3147.12] Edd: That was a great idea.
[3148.12] Frank: Yeah, sounds good.
[3150.12] Frank: I think we should sort something out for that.
[3153.12] Frank: But yeah, the other thing you were saying about
[3156.12] Frank: sort of calling ahead to your local control,

[3196.12] Frank: knowing the local control, you know, finding that out,

[3204.12] Frank: so that they actually kind of know you in advance.
[3206.12] Frank: And it means, you know, if you do have someone come up to you
[3210.12] Frank: and start causing aggro and saying they're going to go call the police
[3214.12] Frank: and they go off in a huff, you can ring them up and be like,
[3218.12] Frank: just so you know, you know, being a thing, it happens.
[3223.12] Frank: I'm all right, don't worry about me.
[3226.12] Frank: And that might be something that, again, helps the police prioritize it
[3230.12] Frank: and keep them on our side.
[3233.12] Tony: Do the police know about the app that you can use?
[3236.12] Edd: Well, this can be part of what we do to,
[3241.12] Edd: if we were to approach the police in college,
[3245.12] Edd: this could be part of what we can show them, you know,
[3249.12] Edd: the information channels that we have available to us.

[3280.12] Edd: the whole idea is if, as NJ says, if you're in a large group
[3284.12] Edd: and you're going a large group flying, you've organized it,
[3286.12] Edd: is that if someone is telling you you won't and they say they're going to call the police,
[3290.12] Edd: you won't have to phone control.
[3292.12] Edd: It's probably better that you don't, so you're not tying up a phone line.

[3297.12] Edd: If they decide to send an officer, it will be because
[3300.12] Edd: the person that's putting in the complaint is losing their shit

[3370.12] NJ: I think the thing that's bothering me the most at the minute
[3374.12] NJ: is I've seen this happen in two locations near where I am now.
[3379.12] NJ: Certainly when I started the hobby, there was, you know,
[3382.12] NJ: this wasn't a problem, but at least two nearby
[3386.12] NJ: have now got signs up with no drones
[3389.12] NJ: and it's been, I mean, one particular place,
[3392.12] NJ: it's about 150 acres worth of land
[3396.12] NJ: and literally one dog walker decided to complain
[3399.12] NJ: saying that the drone noise was scaring his dog off
[3402.12] NJ: and he wasn't able to then walk with it off the leash
[3405.12] NJ: because it would disappear for an hour.
[3407.12] NJ: And the result of that was he got the,
[3411.12] NJ: I think it was Woodland Trust or Marston Trust.
[3413.12] NJ: It was one of the two that then put up on the website,
[3416.12] NJ: no drones and they've now,
[3418.12] NJ: and it's this whole thing of fair use of the land.
[3421.12] NJ: It's like it's 147 acres.
[3423.12] NJ: Like you're out walking your dog, you're not walking 147 acres.
[3426.12] NJ: All that's required is a conversation about
[3429.12] NJ: where are the popular walking routes for them
[3431.12] NJ: and is there a corner of this 147 acres perhaps we could use?
[3436.12] NJ: Is there times a day we should,
[3437.12] NJ: it's just this communication breakdown
[3440.12] NJ: between Arlott and the dog walkers
[3445.12] NJ: that line of communication,
[3446.12] NJ: there needs to be something there to make that
[3449.12] NJ: that line of communication possible
[3451.12] NJ: and a level that is not just a hot headed row
[3455.12] NJ: of we're not harming anyone
[3458.12] NJ: or we've been walking here since forever
[3460.12] NJ: and it's our land and again,
[3462.12] NJ: it's this fair use of the land thing
[3463.12] NJ: but what's happening at the minute is
[3466.12] NJ: you're just getting these people appeal
[3469.12] NJ: to whoever owns the land or regulates the land
[3471.12] NJ: and they're just like, we don't need the hassle.
[3474.12] NJ: We haven't got the manpower to go out and police this.
[3476.12] NJ: The easy option is let's just throw a sign up.
[3478.12] NJ: No more drones, problem goes away.
[3480.12] Edd: Yeah, you've got two, there's two points of interest there.
[3484.12] Edd: Firstly, it's private land that you're referring to.
[3487.12] Edd: So the guys that run that trust that run the land
[3490.12] Edd: absolutely can just do that.

[3531.12] Edd: who were learning to use drones.
[3532.12] Edd: He said, yeah, absolutely come and hire the space,

[3535.12] Edd: So that whole nimby thing is definitely an issue.
[3541.12] Edd: So maybe that raises a wider point.
[3545.12] Edd: Maybe a hobby as well as presenting itself well
[3549.12] Edd: to say the College of Policing
[3551.12] Edd: could probably do a better job of presenting itself well
[3554.12] Edd: to the wider audience.
[3557.12] Edd: There's a huge difference in the videos that put out
[3560.12] Edd: for other racing or freestyle enthusiasts
[3563.12] Edd: because they're all sort of things that excite us.
[3567.12] Edd: Heights, dives, speeds, narrow gaps,
[3571.12] Edd: all the things that get us excited
[3573.12] Edd: will just scare the hell out of a pensioner
[3577.12] Edd: who wants a quiet life
[3579.12] Edd: and their field behind them not to be disturbed.
[3581.12] Edd: They won't understand that that's exciting for us
[3585.12] Edd: and so I'm kind of not surprised that these things happen
[3589.12] Edd: because one world sees it as reckless
[3591.12] Edd: and another world sees it as entertaining
[3593.12] Edd: and it's an age-old problem,
[3595.12] Edd: it's not just drones when motorbikes have the same thing,
[3598.12] Edd: jet skis have exactly the same thing.
[3600.12] Edd: Skateboarders have had it forever?
[3602.12] Edd: Yeah, it's been like this time of memorial.
[3605.12] Edd: I think the chat I had with the guys
[3609.12] Edd: about potentially getting together
[3613.12] Edd: and creating a community video for the College of Policing
[3615.12] Edd: would actually do two jobs.
[3617.12] Edd: Maybe that would go on further
[3618.12] Edd: and actually give us something that we could send out
[3621.12] Edd: to land owners like trusts who own large land with public access
[3627.12] Edd: and maybe they would then sympathise a bit
[3631.12] Edd: and sort of give us a corner.
[3633.12] Edd: The key to the bit, the experience you had in your area
[3636.12] Edd: was it happened after the ports had bolted
[3639.12] Edd: so it's too late by that point.
[3641.12] Edd: Drones got up, those got scared, complaints got in
[3644.12] Edd: and that's it, it's got shut down.
[3647.12] Edd: People who own lands like that or say trust their own land,
[3651.12] Edd: maybe we can be the first in there with a positive story.

[3659.12] NJ: Sadly, it's a case of having to educate these people.

[3667.12] NJ: that want to look through the goggles

[3671.12] NJ: In this one area, I think this is probably
[3675.12] NJ: three, four years of flying down there.
[3677.12] NJ: This was the first time I'd ever had someone say
[3681.12] NJ: you can't be here and have a problem.
[3683.12] NJ: The result of that one person in four years
[3686.12] NJ: was to then get it banned.
[3688.12] NJ: I think part of the problem is, in fact,
[3691.12] NJ: as you were saying, that the only point of reference
[3695.12] NJ: that maybe places like the Woodland Trust
[3698.12] NJ: and people that aren't even really in the know
[3700.12] NJ: about what we're doing have is the buzzword of the media
[3704.12] NJ: which is always very negative, very
[3706.12] NJ: drones are going to kill the world.
