[660.45] Bardwell: drew recommended it to me um and it also it has a flip out screen so for vloggy stuff it's great

[671.97] Bardwell: bench you can kind of see it right there ish but um you can actually see it if you don't have an
[677.25] Bardwell: external monitor the one thing about the g85 is that it has absolutely crap autofocus it's crap
[684.21] Bardwell: it's almost useless but for bench stuff and even for vloggy stuff if you have it in face tracking
[690.21] Bardwell: mode it does okay but then if you like obscure your face or if you have sunglasses on it's out
[695.17] Bardwell: the window so you kind of have to shoot in fixed focus most of the time and occasionally you do get
[699.65] Bardwell: like a shot that's out of focus but for it's it's an okay camera so are you using that now
[706.13] Bardwell: to live stream as well yeah i have an hdmi capture card that lets me basically treat it as if it was
[712.69] AndyRC: a webcam see this this is why you have this is a pro setup isn't it yeah i'm i'm what capture
[721.01] Bardwell: cards are you using so the capture card is an elgato cam link uh and the cool thing about the
[727.41] Bardwell: cam link is that a lot of hdmi capture cards use like proprietary drivers and as a result and this
[734.45] Bardwell: is true even for other elgato capture cards like i have the elgato game capture yeah you can't you
[739.97] Bardwell: can't have more than one of them plugged in at a time because the drivers conflict but the elgato
[744.85] Bardwell: cam link uses standard usb hid drivers and just shows up like a webcam so basically you can have
[751.73] Bardwell: as many of them as your computer will support which if you want it so it lets you actually use
[756.77] Bardwell: two or three at the same time if you prefer that's why i like that one and no no no no weirdo
[760.69] Bardwell: drivers so it's about 120 bucks right now i think from it's the black friday is it this friday no i

[948.37] Bardwell: for ways to support her and i actually subbed to her i was just like let's find a way to give her
[953.89] Bardwell: money and i subbed to her and her i just like what's her highest patreon level it's 100 bucks
[958.69] Bardwell: a month okay so if anybody's looking and they're like i got five bucks why did zoe get 100 bucks
[964.13] Bardwell: it's because she was like literally homeless and it was just the easiest way for me to give her

[1076.13] AndyRC: so what did you do before josh because you know i'm seeing videos of you
[1080.77] AndyRC: backing pigs into into trailers life and i've always had a history of crazy hobbies of which
[1089.01] Bardwell: fpv is just the most recent and now that it's my day my whole job probably it'll stick around but
[1095.57] Bardwell: like i i before i was into fpv i did i was a hobby welder i learned to weld just because i
[1102.21] Bardwell: thought that would be neat um i we did we raised livestock for a while um uh pigs sheep uh chickens
[1110.69] Bardwell: geese not geese ducks we had those for a while i thought to buy tony a chicken once it didn't go
[1116.21] Bardwell: down too too well chickens are great everyone everyone who can should have chickens they're
[1124.37] Bardwell: they're such cool animals they're really just fun to have around they're so neat to
[1128.29] Bardwell: they're just cool to watch they just kind of do neat things all day um they're very low
[1133.09] Bardwell: maintenance and they make eggs but even if you know they're just buying a vegan he won't eat it

[1149.73] Bardwell: as to how many people don't understand the very basics of chicken reproduction they assume that

[1271.73] Bardwell: a giant v8 engine and it goes and you're like yes these big motors these big props these big quads

[1288.45] Bardwell: much higher and they're much higher performance than even the one i flew so catalyst machine

[1299.01] Bardwell: you know it's going to be epic and neil whiteley is going to do is he's working on a build which

[1405.89] AndyRC: a remote control car racing against a formula long car it's more of a spectacle because there's
[1411.97] AndyRC: there's more to see and funny enough actually um i recently uh the the biggest um the biggest
[1419.81] AndyRC: model i've done recently was a seven inch and i could not believe the the response that i got
[1426.69] AndyRC: like the interest that i got from a bigger quad and i think that i think there's something about
[1433.25] AndyRC: that as well as it you know it's a very even though we're racing in groups of people um the
[1441.01] AndyRC: only people having fun are the people looking through the goggles rather than the people
[1445.73] Bardwell: standing at the side watching you know yeah i've i've often felt that fpv is the ideal spectator
[1453.41] Bardwell: sport because unlike a football game where you have to just sit in the stands and watch
[1458.85] Bardwell: you can literally just put your goggles on and you can see the exact pilots feed and but the
[1464.93] Bardwell: problem is that that only feeds that only serves other pilots who have goggles it doesn't serve
[1469.97] Bardwell: spectators very well especially spectators who are not familiar with the sport and so you show
[1474.29] Bardwell: them an fpv feed and they can't really keep track of what's going on so but here's the thing that i
[1479.33] Bardwell: learned that i took away from flying the x-class which is the argument it's good for spectators
[1484.29] Bardwell: therefore it's good for the hobby is an intellectual argument but it was actually fun to fly and
[1490.21] Bardwell: exciting and interesting and and so as a pilot i think if you're looking at x-class going what's
[1495.49] Bardwell: the freaking point maybe wait till you've flown one because when you when you fly it you're like

[1589.65] Bardwell: characters says it's a meme basically where one of the characters is trying to get a buzzword
[1595.17] Bardwell: started and the other girl says stop that's not going to happen but if you actually dig
[1600.45] Bardwell: into that meme that's deep see there's little nuggets here for people who are tied into meme
[1605.89] Bardwell: culture because though because she's just being a hater when she says stop trying to make fetch
[1611.57] Bardwell: happen fetch is not going to happen she's just being a hater it doesn't mean that fetch isn't
[1615.65] Bardwell: going to happen that's the depth there so when you say hd is not going to happen and here's all
[1622.37] Bardwell: the reasons it can't it's not going to happen but actually there's some truth to those reasons but
[1629.49] Bardwell: i'm also kind of just being a hater and that thumbnail was my acknowledgement that these
[1634.53] Bardwell: are obstacles that we have to overcome to make hd happen and there's substantial obstacles but
[1640.37] Bardwell: it's really why hasn't it happened yet which is the question people always ask they always say

[1705.65] Curry: that now there's two aspects of this you could say no because if you run it default it flies
[1711.89] Curry: pretty good anyway but if they want to go in and start fiddling is it is it too much at the moment
[1716.77] Bardwell: well i think beta flight could be easier to use i wish it was easier to use that don't mean
[1723.01] Bardwell: things like air mode and pit tuning which as you point out the defaults work very very well
[1728.29] Bardwell: and you just don't have to even worry about them but i wish it were easier to use in terms
[1733.49] Bardwell: of the setup things like the receiver setup like it's it's so hard for so many people to even get
[1740.37] Bardwell: their receiver working because they don't know what you are to use they don't know serial rx s bus
[1745.57] Bardwell: etc and if you look at something like flight one with their setup wizards or the even the pegasus
[1751.57] Bardwell: gooey for which runs uh which has been done by the hmm is it the helio or the butterfly devs i'm
[1756.77] Bardwell: not sure but these things have these wizards to help you do things like set up your channel
[1761.49] Bardwell: mapping your receiver your motor order and your motor uh direction and these are things that i
[1767.57] Bardwell: wish were in beta flight and whenever the beta flight devs are pressed on these issues their
[1772.45] Bardwell: answer is boils down to well it's an open source project feel free to contribute those things it's
[1777.73] Bardwell: not like we're stopping them from being done we're and it's worth remembering that all the beta
[1782.21] Bardwell: flight devs are working for free in their spare time just because they love the project nobody's
[1786.61] Bardwell: making any money out of this unlike like flight one which they're selling a product and they're
[1791.17] Bardwell: making money on the hardware um so when the beta flight devs say well we just don't like doing that
[1798.13] Bardwell: then uh so be it and it would be great if we saw someone contributing this but the gooey is not
[1806.45] Bardwell: sexy and the people who have the skills to write the wizards and stuff all they don't perceive
[1814.05] Bardwell: setting up beta flight as a problem it's easy for them so that they're just not that interested in

[1830.85] AndyRC: i've noticed especially like this year and and going out and flying with people go into events
[1837.49] AndyRC: is that people are frustrated with how much knowledge you have to have to to get into this
[1848.21] AndyRC: you know uh you you know you have to if you want to be you know up with the latest beta flight you
[1855.09] AndyRC: have to go and read the latest every single day and you know you're going to be a flight
[1862.05] AndyRC: there's an expert mode and all it does is when you click it it turns on your fail safe options
[1869.01] AndyRC: and what what i think what i think beta flight needs is this is like a proper simple mode that
[1876.13] AndyRC: gets rid of all the feed forward gets it gives you simple pits but we taught me i think was it
[1882.77] AndyRC: wayne me and you talked about this beta flight really is is really it's it's called beta it's
[1891.09] AndyRC: it's you know originally to show what can be done and that's the cutting edge because we talked
[1897.97] Curry: about and perhaps you need to do a fork called simple flight which is like it takes it takes
[1902.21] Curry: some it's a beta flight and you just like plug it in and it just says hang on configuring well i
[1906.93] Jack: don't know like what level where do you draw the line because you could use someone like tony as
[1911.89] Jack: a baseline and all the gui is and there's a big button that just says work in red and he clicks
[1919.49] Jack: the work button and then it turns green and then i think if you look at the kiss project you see some
[1927.89] Bardwell: example of what happens when you try to do that because kiss was founded on keep it simple the
[1932.05] Bardwell: idea that it's going to be simple but if you look at the feature creep in kiss since it first came
[1937.41] Bardwell: out you'll notice that it's not still not as bad as beta flight but a lot of the things that were
[1942.77] Bardwell: left out in the beginning kind of got crept back in because people needed them so i think it's
[1947.81] Bardwell: difficult to hold that line another thing that makes it difficult is that beta flight there are
[1953.57] Bardwell: literally like hundreds of maybe not hundreds i forget the number but it's it's a huge number
[1959.73] Bardwell: of boards and so when you talk about why can't we have wizards that auto configure stuff well
[1964.61] Bardwell: that's easier to do when you've got something like flight one where essentially you're the only
[1968.69] Bardwell: manufacturer of the hardware and all the hardware is you know the same underneath the hood or maybe
[1973.49] Bardwell: there's two or three variants one of the reasons it's difficult to do that kind of thing say the
[1977.97] Bardwell: beta flight devs anyway is that the the target support they they have is there's just too many
[1983.33] AndyRC: different boards so so was was you checking out flight one you becoming frustrated with
[1991.97] AndyRC: beta flight or because i remember watching one of your videos and you said the reason why i stick
[1997.57] AndyRC: to beta flight is because it's what it's what i know and it'd take up too much time to learn kiss
[2004.05] AndyRC: to learn flight one so what was the thinking behind trying flight one and moving away from
[2011.97] AndyRC: beta flight because i'll tell you now i i got so frustrated with beta flight that i went back
[2019.41] AndyRC: to kiss recently and even though the biggest problem with kiss is all the serial number
[2025.25] AndyRC: business that that's the limitation of kiss but actually there's three screens in kiss that can
[2030.85] AndyRC: get you going pretty easy so yeah what what was it for you that sort of thought i'll try this flight
[2037.73] AndyRC: one and are you considering kiss and other other options now i would i would always like to try
[2044.21] Bardwell: these other these other firmwares just so i have a sense of what's out there you know and don't get
[2048.69] Bardwell: sort of pigeonholed um personally i mean i know that as a content creator i'm very much pigeonholed
[2054.45] Bardwell: into beta flight and and so forth it's just uh i mean that's just what i i learned coming up
[2060.93] Bardwell: it's still the most popular by far i actually did some uh search research recently into google
[2067.49] Bardwell: analytics just looking at search results and what people were searching for it beta flight is by far
[2073.41] Bardwell: by far more popular than the others at least if search results are any indicator um so there's not
[2079.81] Bardwell: a strong motivation to move out of it if beta flight was in for some reason becoming much less
[2085.25] Bardwell: popular then i would want to i would want to go where the audience is obviously or if there was
[2090.29] Bardwell: some new firmware that had much much better technology in some way i might be more motivated
[2095.17] Bardwell: um it's challenging to make content i don't want to make content about stuff that i'm not
[2101.65] Bardwell: authoritative on i don't want to just half-ass it and and in order to become knowledgeable and
[2107.01] Bardwell: authoritative it takes a big investment i need to be the smartest guy in the room or close to it
[2112.37] Bardwell: if i'm talking about and with beta flight i kind of am but with flight one i'm not and i guarantee
[2118.21] Bardwell: you if i make a flight one video and i get a detail wrong i'm going to get just jumped on to
[2122.61] Bardwell: the nth degree nobody's going to be very forgiving if i make mistakes about flight one or kiss maybe
[2128.77] Bardwell: the kiss guys will be a little more forgiving but anyway so that's why when i sit down and make a
[2135.49] Bardwell: video you are no kiss guys the kiss people have never been hostile i don't know what it is about

[2147.33] Bardwell: similar degree the butterfly fans you know they there's some of them are pretty hostile i don't

[2190.93] Bardwell: think i think it's pretty awesome i just want you to try it out and so i since it was just sitting

[2249.73] Bardwell: it changed the ESCs response curve it sort of smoothed off some of the voltage spikes which meant
[2254.77] Bardwell: that the the motors responded smoother i don't know if that's true but yeah i've always thought
[2259.01] Bardwell: the kiss has a very unique feel uh and i i will say that sim one has a very unique feel which some
[2265.33] Bardwell: have compared to kiss kind of kind of you know loose but tight i think is the word somebody
[2271.25] Bardwell: used and i was like yeah no i get that that's kind of how it feels um it's a very it is sort
[2277.97] Bardwell: of locked and precise i'm talking about sim mode here i haven't flown kiss recently uh is it is
[2283.33] Bardwell: locked and precise without feeling stiff it is responsive to the stick movements without
[2289.49] Bardwell: feeling sloppy and it's very that's a very interesting combination and i very much liked
[2294.93] Bardwell: it when i did fly it that being said it wasn't like people people expect the new stuff to be
[2301.41] Bardwell: perfect no prop watch everything is perfect forever and i mean it has its limitations like
[2306.29] Bardwell: anything you know you still have to tweak the tune a little bit on the quad i had it was it was very
[2311.17] Bardwell: good it wasn't like revolutionary perfect but i definitely see the appeal yeah kiss needs an
[2317.33] AndyRC: on-screen display like bit of flight like spi built in and it needs to be cheaper and if they
[2324.93] Jack: did that i think it would be the leader you can still mark it with your st but such a pain in
[2331.33] AndyRC: the ass though it's a pain it's such a pain once it's set up it's amazing and i i prefer it to
[2338.05] AndyRC: beat a flight actually the the the the osd but it's a you have you have to disconnect the the
[2346.69] AndyRC: the connectors to and you have to uh flash the config file set it up and then flash another
[2354.13] AndyRC: and then it's an absolute mess if they could figure that out i think do you still have to
[2360.45] Jack: disconnect the the the ports on the q3 too because yeah yeah you do osd you pass through

[2376.45] AndyRC: yeah the the other one was again you know it's a rebranded minim osd which you know was two years

[2392.05] Bardwell: and i think i think if you look at any of them people people are like this is the best
[2396.29] Bardwell: and if you look at any of them it's easy to forget that there's more at stake than just
[2400.69] Bardwell: the pure flight handling unless you're like just a racer and that's all you care about is your lap
[2405.65] Bardwell: times there's things like the price which kiss loses on price um there's things like uh the
[2413.97] Bardwell: variety of boards like for example if you don't like uh the revolt you know board but if you don't
[2419.81] Bardwell: like their hardware design for any reason then you're kind of out of luck with flight one although
[2423.81] Bardwell: i have heard they started supporting the pyro uh f4 osd so maybe they're branching out into other
[2429.65] Bardwell: hardware that should be interesting because their development resources flight one they have they
[2434.69] Bardwell: have relatively limited development resources i feel i mean i don't know how many guys they have
[2439.01] Bardwell: on their payroll but it seems like the way that they struggle to uh well fix bugs and release new
[2449.22] Bardwell: features it seems like it takes them a while to do that and it feels like they don't have a ton of
[2452.34] Bardwell: developers on board that's just my opinion so if you you know everybody has a different pro and a
[2457.62] Bardwell: different con beta flight has a massive variety of hardware available at any price point you prefer
[2463.22] Bardwell: and they have relatively large developer base and and and user base so you get a lot of testing
[2468.5] Bardwell: but they're not always the most cutting edge in terms of things like you know flight one had like
[2472.74] Bardwell: launch mode first so hmm everybody's out there and they're all doing their thing and it's all good

[3003.46] Bardwell: winner and then you've got the baby hawk uh the pro with the with the 2.5 inch uh arms and the
[3010.18] Bardwell: higher kv motors and and now the night the tiny hawk yeah emacs is really doing something right

[3270.66] Bardwell: and um the hype cycle refers to uh it's a it's a concept by i think gartner with um the essence
[3280.1] Bardwell: of the hype cycle is that any new technology starts with this big surge of interest where
[3288.74] Bardwell: everybody is excited about it and you get a lot of speculators a lot of people decide that they
[3293.78] Bardwell: want to get into it and what eventually happens is that there's then a contraction which in which
[3301.94] Bardwell: a lot of the people who like weren't able to make it or didn't understand it or weren't serious
[3306.26] Bardwell: about it fall out and and that contraction if you don't understand the nature of the cycle
[3313.94] Bardwell: can look like oh the industry's dying but it's actually an essential uh sort of balance to the
[3321.22] Bardwell: overhype that inevitably comes with any new technology and then after that sort of contraction
[3327.3] Bardwell: you get sort of steadiness after that and and chad's position is that we're in that contraction
[3334.42] Bardwell: phase now and you go oh all these companies they're going out of business that's because there were
[3339.94] Bardwell: too many to begin with and and it was more than maybe could be supported and now there's this
[3346.34] Bardwell: contraction there's going to be some sort of thinning of the herd and that and that then
[3351.14] Bardwell: we'll find out the point is that we don't know what fpv and rc is going to be like we don't know
[3356.9] Bardwell: what the technology is going to look like and we don't know who the users and customers are going
[3360.66] Bardwell: to be we only know who got it started but it's going to be different in two years but it doesn't
[3366.74] Bardwell: mean it's going away um you're i think you're right that there's contraction um as far as the
[3373.06] Bardwell: technology goes i think it's normal that we would see this refinement in technology so we started
[3380.58] Bardwell: what do we start with for cameras there were security cameras there were backup cameras
[3384.34] Bardwell: and there was a lot of room to take that technology and very cheaply and easily
[3389.7] Bardwell: refined it into something better if you look at flight controllers you know what we've done with
[3393.86] Bardwell: the hardware we haven't created anything revolutionary with the hardware we're using
[3398.1] Bardwell: off-the-shelf chips that are used in cell phones and other stuff and we've just figured out more
[3402.66] Bardwell: efficient and more effective ways to put that stuff into a package but the fpv market as a whole
[3408.9] Bardwell: is not enough to justify creating new technology from whole cloth and that's why in my video about
[3415.86] Bardwell: why digital high def fpv will never ever ever ever ever happen the gist of it is that as long as the
[3421.94] Bardwell: market is small we don't warrant anybody creating solutions just for us some people have responded
[3427.78] Bardwell: to that video and said what about 5g when 5g cellular comes out it's going to have sub millisecond
[3433.14] Bardwell: latency and five gigabits per second and we'll just do fpv over 5g to which i say great but that will
[3439.86] Bardwell: not be a solution that was invented for fpv once again we will be luckily tagging along in a
[3445.54] Bardwell: solution that was invented for someone else that's fortunate but that doesn't sort of speak to the
[3449.7] Bardwell: essence of our market so yeah we're contracting the fact that our technology has not taken any
[3456.66] Bardwell: leaps and bounds simply means that we've sort of squeezed most of the essential and easy refinements
[3464.98] Bardwell: out of it and the reason we're not seeing new new sort of groundbreaking leaps is because we're just
[3472.9] Bardwell: not big enough a market to demand that to cause that to happen mostly but the way we become that
[3479.46] Bardwell: market is that we get through this contraction we sort of figure out who we are and then we sort
[3484.42] Bardwell: of begin the slow steady growth it's like whenever you start a diet the first thing you do is you lose
[3488.82] Bardwell: eight pounds in the first week and you go this is great but then it slows down and then you figure
[3492.98] Bardwell: out well am i going to lose the weight or am i going to gain it all back and that's kind of where
[3497.14] Bardwell: we're at we had that big spurt and now we're having the contraction and then that's a that's
[3501.7] AndyRC: a necessary step this is why this is why i think things need to get easier in order for that
[3509.38] AndyRC: excitement to come back i i think like whether it's be it fly or whatever the setup needs to be
[3516.98] AndyRC: easier but one thing that concerns me now is all of this long-range stuff the r9 the the crossfire
[3526.58] AndyRC: we're talking able to fly miles but we're doing it with many quads that have no redundancy
[3534.5] AndyRC: and i think that i think there's still room there i think um and you know i i talked to nj tech is a
[3541.94] AndyRC: chat that comes on here oh you know you know nj tech you've seen his videos um he's he's
[3547.7] AndyRC: experimenting at the moment with sticking gps using the the new uh gps options in beta flight
[3555.46] AndyRC: and i think i think that is something that just as a you know i'm not saying we need to be flying
[3562.42] AndyRC: a gps but if all goes wrong flick a switch and and you can uh and you you quad or fly fly back to you
[3571.46] AndyRC: and i'm hoping that's something that um becomes a thing with you know the long-range uh sort of
[3579.78] AndyRC: thing and i think that would spike a bit of uh more interest is you know people you you can
[3585.78] AndyRC: pile a thousand dollars into a quad i i've i've got a friend who did that he flew it in angle mode
[3592.9] AndyRC: and uh because there wasn't enough angle um on it uh the wind blew it away he he didn't know
[3600.5] AndyRC: aqua mode it flew away and never to be seen again um i'd love to see some gps uh options
[3608.58] AndyRC: small small gps uh units are you know for redundancy and i think uh that's my personal
[3617.06] AndyRC: opinion and i think that would um you know make people feel a bit more safe in their investment
[3623.38] AndyRC: because the amount of people that i uh just recently i was flying with a guy he lost his
[3630.5] AndyRC: culture in a field and he said that's it i'm done and we've not heard of him again for a couple of
[3636.34] AndyRC: redundant power beeper come on how many videos i have to make about this they're no good those beepers
[3645.94] AndyRC: the battery comes out that's that's pretty good yeah but if it's flown two miles away you don't
