[367.74] Tony Cake: it's kind of a that's new for me that was kind of fun so you don't we were talking about this
[374.9] Frank: before the show a bit because um there was an issue at one point where there was like a camera
[379.7] Frank: or a type of camera or something that wasn't working very well but that's that's all cleared
[383.3] Tony Cake: up now i believe yeah there weren't many i mean there cameras which aren't ideal there was one

[433.07] Tony Cake: to do one it's actually a it's actually a pretty easy project um but is there really a need for it

[451.15] Frank: thing there won't be many people i think that will go for the 2.4 with the massive antennas and

[461.47] Frank: spend over the odds to get the fancy stuff i imagine you know the um the crazy thing is

[474.51] Tony Cake: is a little from nuts and i think you know i classify fpv people into kind of three bins
[481.55] Tony Cake: there's the guys who believe one kilometer is long range and hope to get there one day
[487.39] Tony Cake: and then there's the guys who you know kind of potter around between kind of one and five kilometers

[880.35] Frank: a police helicopter um and they basically followed it was a phantom four uh and they basically
[888.27] Frank: followed it back to him and then because he was flying it from his garden as far as i can tell
[896.11] Frank: and so they went and knocked on his door and then they ended up searching his house
[901.23] Frank: and he'd hidden it away in the little loft above his bath um but they like you know just kept
[907.15] Frank: searching until they found it and then went well that's it and he was like no it wasn't a loft
[912.27] Tony Cake: above their bath is that a british thing i don't know probably it's probably like a little

[1404.75] Frank: no one really knew which direction it was going to go so there were loads of people putting out
[1408.99] Frank: loads of things and plotting out loads of different possible options and now we've kind of trimmed
[1415.39] Frank: those down to a few and that's the focus and we've kind of got this hardcore and and that's
[1421.87] Frank: kind of why it's plateaued is that we've it's kind of developed and it's it's kind of stable now i
[1428.03] Tony Cake: don't think it's out to be honest i mean it's it's a nice theory but the way i look at this world is
[1434.91] Tony Cake: is things exploded i mean fpv with fixed wing has been running on for years right so it's for fpv i
[1442.43] Tony Cake: mean i got involved in this about 14 years ago um which is apparently when my rc groups account
[1448.27] Tony Cake: was created and uh so fpv has been around for a while but if you look at the kind of the quad scene
[1455.39] Tony Cake: this was really kicked off by the ergeny video all right so the ergeny video the flying in the
[1460.75] Tony Cake: star wars and the forest thing so if you look at that today i think it's up at about 3.7 million
[1465.71] Tony Cake: hits all right so this thing and if you if you rewind to when that came out there was nothing
[1473.71] Tony Cake: like it no you know people's reference for that was star wars it's like holy shit this is like
[1479.23] Tony Cake: pod racing but but it's really happening um and that pulled a lot of people in i think a lot of
[1485.39] Tony Cake: people came into this hobby after seeing that really extraordinary kind of something never
[1490.75] Tony Cake: seen before and then over time i think obviously you know we went from kind of one viral video to
[1498.19] Tony Cake: tens of thousands hundreds of thousands and i think the interest is kind of worn off
[1503.63] Tony Cake: from kind of a newcomers point of view you know they've kind of seen it before
[1510.83] Tony Cake: um i mean as a as a manufacturer i did hope that the investment in putting drone racing on tv
[1521.07] Tony Cake: kind of the mass media stuff would uh would really bring in some awareness and some interest
[1526.91] Jack: but that hasn't happened um well we were watching tiny all we were watching round
[1533.15] Jack: yours before the curry and i don't mean curry kitten uh we were off to curry kitten but before
[1541.07] Frank: the actual curry we were watching the the live stream a couple of weeks ago from the
[1547.39] Frank: fai event in chenzhen the world drone yeah and what did we all say we can't see what's going on
[1554.75] Tony Cake: it's not a good spectator event still ever well you guys i was there and and to be there in
[1561.47] Tony Cake: person um it was a bit like watching paint dry because there was no real local uh commentators
[1569.47] Tony Cake: and they sold tickets for the stands there uh for an extortionate amount of money in chinese money
[1575.63] Tony Cake: and uh didn't sell many but that that stuff i mean in my opinion that stuff's a disaster i mean
[1582.91] Tony Cake: this was the big hope that this would bring the masses into our fun hobby um and i think it's
[1589.23] Tony Cake: failed and one of the reason is that you know mere mortals can't follow racing i mean even racers
[1595.55] Tony: can't follow racing so tony do your job my little tony uh thank you e f f e k t f b v uh who just
[1607.87] Tony: dropped us 10 pound in the super chat thank you very much that will go towards um uh jack's

[1664.99] Curry: toning because he's no bigger than the size of your thumb so two things i i noticed one is that
[1671.79] Curry: there was a difference between the way rapid fire got released everything else like when i look at
[1675.71] Curry: the vortex quads they they'd gone off and they'd been sort of you know tuned by like uh chad noak
[1682.51] Curry: and all that and they've been doing loads and loads of testing so when they finally got released it
[1686.03] Curry: was like look at this it flies perfectly yeah as opposed to rapid fire which is kind of like here's
[1690.59] Curry: what we got now tell us what you like and it was kind of a sort of development cycle whilst it was
[1696.11] Tony Cake: going out to the people no really i mean it was tested by a large number of people um a large
[1704.91] Tony Cake: number of people doing silly long range flights where you know the equipment was pushed to the
[1709.31] Tony Cake: limits um yeah what we didn't what we underestimated was how shitty some of the gear was it was going
[1716.99] Tony Cake: to be feeding it um you know you designed these things for to correct certain things but up to
[1724.11] Tony Cake: a certain limit and some of these cameras uh were absolutely awful and the goggles did a damn good
[1731.31] Tony Cake: job of of you know repairing it so nobody ever saw it before so it wasn't sort of a more conscious
[1736.99] Curry: thing to say let's let's put this out there and see what people like it's kind of you thought it
[1740.51] Curry: was done but then you kind of people had really bad cameras yep no we were we were pretty happy

[1777.79] Tony Cake: expect that at all i mean luckily we were able to do a fair number of things between the first and
[1781.79] Tony Cake: second batches and the first batch wasn't that big um so you know we we did whatever we could
[1786.99] Tony Cake: in hardware we did whatever we could in software and then we contacted all of the manufacturers
[1792.59] Tony Cake: um that had questionable gear and we asked them nicely if they wouldn't mind fixing it for their
[1798.27] Curry: next builds so let's go my other question we were talking last week about uh a beta fly as uh as
[1807.39] Curry: josh barbara and we were talking about how complex it has become for the average user and one of the
[1812.99] Curry: things that the vortex quads do is obviously they have a sort of interface into beta flight
[1817.79] Curry: and when you set it up the first time you plug in it detects what sort of receiver you've got
[1822.67] Curry: and then it asks you to move your stick so it sets all its endpoints it does everything now
[1828.11] Curry: nobody else has done this it hasn't gone into beta flight is that because it's yours or people are
[1831.71] Tony Cake: just too lazy i've actually i did have this discussion in public with somebody you know
[1836.91] Tony Cake: if anyone wants to go port that into beta flight i'd be quite happy to see it go um you know i
[1842.99] Tony Cake: think one of the issues that we've got i mean going back to the you know getting people interested
[1848.35] Tony Cake: and getting more people involved in the hobby the first thing you need to do is make them aware

[2009.14] Frank: hard bomb work race events are now you know a lot of the people who go to them know what to do and
[2016.66] Frank: there are procedures and a lot of etiquette and i mean it's simple when you know it but when you go
[2024.42] Frank: to an event the first time there's a lot going on very quickly and there's no patience for people
[2029.94] Frank: being a bit slow or turning things on at the wrong time on the wrong channel um is that the
[2036.5] Frank: same with any hobby or any sport though yeah um but i mean it used to be that way with you know the
[2044.66] Frank: line of sight stuff with the control uh you know before we had frequency hopping crystals
[2049.3] Tony: and ribbons exactly and pegboards and things and all that was sandals and wire
[2056.66] Frank: sandals and wire get your little control lines tied up in nuts yeah um so i mean to me like the
[2066.02] Frank: big step for general RC flying was um foamies in 2.4 um and we've kind of in already got the
[2075.22] Frank: usability of foamies in quads because they're carbon fiber and they can smash up and it's fine
[2081.14] Frank: um but the the the big issue i think for events at least is the control of the FPV um do you think
[2091.06] Frank: we're anywhere near any kind of improvement on that front i don't think it's the biggest
[2099.14] Tony Cake: problem i mean we uh our contribution to that was was the wand system and for the people who
[2104.82] Tony Cake: use it for their events i mean that basically solved it um you know in fact even you know DCL
[2110.74] Tony Cake: last year it's actually interesting when i talk about it um you know we ran tramps and wands for
[2115.94] Tony Cake: the whole season i think i don't think we had any actually we had one case of someone turning on in
[2120.1] Tony Cake: the pits i think it was banny um but uh you know that that's in the whole season so i think we have
[2127.62] Frank: solutions to that i don't think that's the biggest problem but it's um you know with DCL though isn't
[2133.46] Tony Cake: that largely people who know what they're doing um yeah but if you have a large number of people
[2140.1] Tony Cake: who should know what they're doing there's a kind of the probability of someone screwing up gets
[2144.74] Frank: bigger well what i mean is is you know if if that was a lot easier then it would make it easier for
[2153.14] Frank: people to join in at events or at least less daunting risk of failure i for me at the events
[2161.62] Tony Cake: i mean years ago i used to go to events and compete and you know still okay because everyone
[2166.9] Tony Cake: sucked so i fit right in um i think these days there's a a real split between the you know the
[2173.3] Tony Cake: top guys who have just got amazing and the average guys who are still average um so i think
[2180.1] Tony Cake: there's you know these events really need to be kind of split into two um i love going to the
[2185.94] Tony Cake: events which are like from immortals i mean the rookie track i-o last year was uh was paradise for
[2191.7] Tony Cake: me so i'd like to see more of that but i don't think so much it's a it's a technology problem
[2200.1] Curry: but it could be wrong well it would certainly help if we had the equivalent of uh a 2.4
[2206.1] Curry: spread spectrum for uh fpv but of course as soon as something goes digital their latency gets added
[2212.26] Tony Cake: to it doesn't it for your uh well the the problem is i mean everyone thinks that going digital will
[2217.62] Tony Cake: fix all this but the the fundamental problem is the 5.8 gigahertz band is is so big and um in the
[2225.46] Tony Cake: uk we we already can't fly you know eight quads legally in the band that's allocated
[2232.58] Tony Cake: in the u.s with raceband you can just fly eight um going digital doesn't necessarily use any less
[2240.1] Tony Cake: bandwidth so you're still fitting the same number of things into the same hole um so with the 2.4
[2247.54] Tony Cake: radios you've got you know frequency hopping you know you've got um things which take up a little
[2253.7] Tony Cake: tiny bit of bandwidth and you can have a whole bunch of them in this massive cavernous band
[2258.1] Tony Cake: and they can hop around and even if they do collide it doesn't really matter because you'll
[2261.78] Tony Cake: catch it you know you catch the next one but with video even digital video um you've just got this
[2268.66] Tony Cake: problem is the the thing is big it's it's a wide bandwidth and it's a little band i suppose you'd
[2275.62] Curry: at least have the effect that people would be able to reject other people's video but then again you'd
[2279.78] Frank: get holes in your video exactly yeah but the other thing is we'd have more bandwidth available to us
[2285.54] Frank: if it was digital because the there's a whole different set of rules for digital broadcast
[2289.62] Tony Cake: isn't there no the problem is that the bandwidth i mean if you go back to the connect system
[2294.98] Tony Cake: um it was the 20 megahertz bandwidth for their initial lease which was the 30 hertz stuff
[2302.26] Tony Cake: which kind of sucked um to get up to 60 hertz with the new camera you needed 40 megahertz
[2308.66] Tony Cake: of bandwidth and 40 megahertz of bandwidth is basically what we have today with analog
[2313.62] Frank: yeah but i mean in terms of with the digital stuff when being like with the wi-fi there's
[2320.18] Frank: all different channels at like 5.1 and like all other bits of the radio spectrum become
[2326.42] Tony Cake: legally yes you've got a bit more space that is true um and that that's kind of country specific
[2334.66] Frank: and even if it wasn't frequency hopping if it was listen before talk kind of thing where you never
[2341.22] Tony Cake: want that with video listen before talk means you know you listen if somebody else is talking

[2659.7] Jack: oh yeah that was all about and then you flew behind a hill and you looked at your like eight

[2678.66] Tony Cake: it's the only time i've ever seen it that normally when connectors get hot
[2682.26] Tony Cake: they weld themselves closed and you can't disconnect them when we found this thing
[2687.46] Tony Cake: the xt60 got so hot the plastic had flowed around the center conductor and isolated itself
[2695.38] Tony Cake: so the battery did everything just disconnected in flight while we were making the episode

[3047.54] Tony Cake: from the roof you know they had these cherry pickers i went up i got the goggles on this
[3051.7] Tony Cake: thing swaying around and we've got somebody hanging over the edge with antennas now we're
[3055.46] Tony Cake: trying to find any way that we could run an event in this hall um and we basically came to
[3061.22] Tony Cake: the conclusion that we couldn't it was just that shit um so that's when the project really started
[3067.14] Tony Cake: it's like okay how can we fix it you know what can we do to make it work so the the original goal
[3072.02] Tony Cake: was just to solve that problem and then while we were doing it we realized that to have a module
[3077.46] Tony Cake: that would kick ass in long range as well would would kind of be nice so we we poured a stupid
[3082.82] Tony Cake: amount of effort into um making sure the modules are second to none as far as sensitivity goes
[3090.5] Tony Cake: which is the part you need for long range um and batch one was pretty damn good batch two took it
[3097.94] Tony Cake: to another level and batch three take it takes it a little bit further so yeah i think it's an
[3102.98] Tony Cake: all-round now it's it's a pretty good all-round module but i'm gonna say that anyhow but i i

[3118.96] Frank: diversity and that it's not just switching between the two but it's doing clever things
[3123.44] Tony Cake: as well yeah yeah you basically got you've got two feeds which are a mix of kind of
[3134.32] Tony Cake: shit and good stuff and you basically want to take the good bits and leave out the bad bits of both

[3146.96] Tony Cake: yeah it does it helps i mean it'll do it'll do a pretty good job even with linears
[3153.2] Tony Cake: um but you know it's it's it's most happy when you've got two antennas with about the same view
[3161.44] Tony Cake: of the sky so you know two omnis for an indoor kind of thing really works well um imagine

[3172.8] Tony Cake: you've got an omni and the omni you know sees a big multi-pathing null and then the patch
