[456.24] Curry: Well, after last week's episode, I was chatting to Frank about
[462.24] Curry: crowdfunding in general, because we were talking a little bit about
[466.24] Curry: microdrive four, which is we've had Vernon on before, which is going
[471.24] Curry: at the moment.
[472.24] Jack: And just watching his view.
[477.24] Curry: But we've done a great job in boosting his.
[480.24] AndyRC: I told you you do that.
[482.24] AndyRC: Half of them is for MJ.
[484.24] AndyRC: And now you're looking at all of us combined.

[509.24] Tony: What is crowdfunding?
[511.24] Curry: It's a good point.
[513.24] Curry: Crowdfunding is simply somebody comes up with an idea and says,
[518.24] Curry: I need this much money for this.
[520.24] Curry: And they will use a platform, typically Kickstarter or Indiegogo
[524.24] Curry: and say, hey, look at this thing that I'm going to build.
[528.24] Curry: Sometimes, and I say sometimes, as far as drone goes, mostly
[532.24] Curry: coming up with simulated or one we call fake footage about this
[536.24] Curry: is what it's going to look like.
[537.24] Curry: Here's our aspirational view of the drone, which looks very
[540.24] Curry: enticing.
[541.24] Curry: And then people can pledge an amount of money for it to say,
[545.24] Curry: yes, we're going to support you building this thing.
[548.24] Curry: When it gets to a certain amount, like if they pass for a
[551.24] Curry: hundred thousand, it gets a hundred thousand.
[553.24] Curry: It's funded and they're expected to deliver it.
[557.24] AndyRC: Now, this is the issue, isn't it?
[559.24] AndyRC: Because what you just said there was they may post 3D renders
[564.24] AndyRC: or maybe come up with video footage of what they envisage
[569.24] AndyRC: the product will be like.
[571.24] AndyRC: But because the product isn't funded and it's just an idea,
[576.24] AndyRC: that's where people can get kind of duped, quote, unquote,
[582.24] AndyRC: in that it might not actually be the end result.
[586.24] AndyRC: You're taking a risk with crowdfunding as a risk, isn't it?
[590.24] Curry: It is a massive risk.
[591.24] Curry: And what we talked about last week was can we find anybody
[595.24] Curry: that's actually backed a drone and has got it and has said,
[600.24] Curry: this is really amazing.
[601.24] Curry: I'm so happy it does everything and more.
[604.24] Curry: And the quick answer to that is no.
[606.24] Curry: After meticulous research, I could not find any crowdfunded
[611.24] Curry: drone thing that didn't have loads and loads of comments
[615.24] Curry: saying, this is crap.
[616.24] Curry: I didn't get everything I wanted.
[618.24] Curry: This is nothing like it worked out.
[620.24] Curry: Some of the little nuggets of greatness in terms of badness
[626.24] Curry: are that everybody I think has heard of the Zano drone.
[629.24] Curry: That got 2.3 million pounds in with 12,000 backers in 2014.
[636.24] Curry: They showed an amazing video of this thing being able to track
[640.24] Curry: and fly.
[641.24] Curry: Of course, it wasn't that drone itself.
[644.24] Curry: They ended up shipping a very small proportion of drones,
[648.24] Curry: most of which just did a little bunny hop and died.
[651.24] Curry: The company went to voluntary liquidation and at that time
[655.24] Curry: revealed they've not only burned through that 2.3 million quid
[658.24] Curry: but owed another million quid in more the funding that they
[663.24] Curry: borrowed.
[664.24] Curry: And as they started selling with their assets, they also sold
[667.24] Curry: the server that whenever you switched on your drone, it had
[670.24] Curry: to connect to the server and say, I'm ready to fly.
[674.24] Curry: Once that disappeared, nobody could buy anything.
[677.24] Jack: Vernon's in the chat.
[678.24] Jack: I would just like to warn you for legal reasons.

[769.24] Curry: You can all go off as a group and you can try and make this thing fly.

[774.24] Curry: Obviously, though, it's not quite what the original people backed.
[777.24] Curry: And this becomes the problem.
[779.24] Curry: When things go awry and there's been loads of these, there's some big names,
[786.24] Curry: some that you may not have heard of, some you probably did.
[789.24] Curry: On the go was another one, like three and a half million.
[792.24] Curry: Microdrone for itself got 3.6 million.

[798.24] Curry: Lily wasn't crowdfunded exactly.

[801.24] Curry: Lily brought out this amazing video with faked footage and got 60,000 pre-orders.
[806.24] Curry: So they took money in from that point of view, but they didn't crowdfund it.
[810.24] Curry: So one of the problems with crowdfunding is, and this is the same on Indiegogo and...
[816.24] Curry: What's the other one? I forgot this name already.
[818.24] Curry: Kickstarter.
[819.24] Curry: Basically, all those sites do is basically hook you up with a creator.
[823.24] Curry: They say, here's an interesting thing.
[826.24] Curry: If you'd like to donate money or place money to it, we'll handle that.
[830.24] Curry: We'll take a slice of the pie.
[832.24] Curry: They take like 5% and there's some fees involved in transactions.
[836.24] Curry: At the point that it's funded and you hand over the money, they're done with you.
[841.24] Curry: They've washed their hands.
[842.24] Curry: Up until that point, you can reclaim your money and say,
[845.24] Curry: I don't want to fund this anymore and get it back.
[847.24] Curry: After that, they say, it's not down to us.
[849.24] Curry: You have to talk to the company themselves.
[853.24] Curry: And of course, if this company has gone into liquidation
[856.24] Curry: or has just spend all the money and says,
[858.24] Curry: well, sorry, we didn't manage to do it after all.

[933.24] Curry: but as soon as it goes over an amount, it gets taxed anyway.

[978.24] Curry: But when you say it's development, don't forget,
[980.24] Curry: you're basically funding a startup company.
[982.24] Curry: So all that money's coming in is not just for manufacturing and stuff.
[986.24] Curry: It's like, okay, let's implore these people.

[990.24] Curry: Let's run ads for it.

[993.24] Curry: Let's get some really classy videos made and stuff.

[999.24] Curry: than going to actual development and eventually manufacture.

[1018.24] Curry: It's a single rotor drone in this enclosed thing
[1021.24] Curry: and the idea is it's super safe.

[1027.24] Curry: It looks like a flying Amazon Echo, if you like.

[1039.24] Curry: They got 300,000 and they posted loads of positive updates.

[1046.24] Curry: It's like, oh, we've run out of money now and we can't do anything with it.

[1050.24] Curry: And then the trouble is as well that these projects die off.
[1054.24] Curry: People lose all that money because they can't get it back from a liquidated company.
[1057.24] Curry: And then some other company will get hold of it
[1061.24] Curry: or it's like a shield company for the first company
[1064.24] Curry: and they announce it's coming back as something else.
[1066.24] Curry: And there's like another whole round of people asking for money again
[1070.24] Curry: and trying to...
[1071.24] Curry: It's like they can repeat it on the same thing,
[1073.24] Curry: on the same piece of vaporware and never deliver anything.

[1078.24] Curry: So the question is, I was thinking like, why would you have a crowdfund?
[1082.24] Curry: And I'm guessing the people look at it and aside from saying,
[1085.24] Curry: wow, this is amazing.

[1087.24] Curry: It does the most amazing things ever.
[1088.24] Curry: Is this like, okay, if you order early, you'll get this for half the price.
[1093.24] Curry: But aside from the fact that it never happens,
[1096.24] Curry: my point of view is if something's actually manufactured
[1099.24] Curry: can be mass manufactured and is good and successful,
[1103.24] Curry: then it won't just like you do the crowdfund campaign,
[1105.24] Curry: you'll ship it out to those people and then you just close your company.
[1108.24] Curry: Obviously, you're going to keep making them.
[1109.24] Curry: You're going to put them in retail shops.
[1112.24] Curry: As soon as you've got the economies of scale,
[1114.24] Curry: the price will come down.
[1116.24] Curry: So it's like, rather than backing something,
[1119.24] Curry: you might as well wait until it looks like it's going to be successful.
[1122.24] Curry: And if it's successful, you'll be able to buy it.
[1125.24] AndyRC: Yeah, but don't they use that money, though,
[1129.24] AndyRC: in order to develop the product?
[1133.24] AndyRC: If they haven't got that money,
[1135.24] AndyRC: then how can it ever become a product, I guess?
[1138.24] Curry: Well, there is that.
[1140.24] Curry: But there's other ways of raising capital.
[1143.24] Curry: It's kind of...
[1145.24] Curry: It depends how much...
[1148.24] Curry: The fact people keep going into this thing
[1151.24] Curry: and getting absolutely hammered on what's being delivered
[1154.24] Curry: and what's going there is just shocking.
[1157.24] Curry: I mean, Werner's talking about people are vetting people now
[1162.24] Curry: and that you have to submit everything,
[1164.24] Curry: but there's still an ongoing long list of things that are being promised
[1168.24] Curry: and things that are being delivered just doesn't match up with them.
[1172.24] AndyRC: But Werner would argue that his crowdfunding drone was a success.
[1180.24] AndyRC: Even though it didn't meet all of the targets,
[1184.24] AndyRC: he did ship to every single person that backed it,
[1188.24] AndyRC: even if it wasn't the original thing.
[1193.24] Curry: Yeah, so there's real big rip-offs,
[1197.24] Curry: like it didn't happen, everybody lost their money.
[1200.24] Curry: And then there's other things where here's the video we presented,
[1203.24] Curry: here's what you get, everybody got it,
[1205.24] Curry: not everybody was happy with it.
[1207.24] Curry: And there's been... there's plenty of that,
[1210.24] Curry: where you find that the campaign round successfully,
[1214.24] Curry: it got delivered and there's things like...
[1216.24] Curry: these things I had never really heard of,
[1218.24] Curry: one called the Air Dog, one called the Hexo Plus.
[1220.24] Tony: That one worked, didn't it, the Air Dog?
[1222.24] Tony: Because I watched that and I was actually going to...
[1225.24] Tony: I was going to do that one because it looked really good.
[1228.24] Curry: They've both got about 1.3 million ghost drones in that one.
[1231.24] Curry: I've actually seen a ghost drone in the wild.
[1233.24] Curry: I was watching in my field and it crashed into a tree.
[1236.24] Curry: And that's another 850k.
[1238.24] Curry: So these are ones that... these were all sort of larger gimbal-based quads,
[1242.24] Curry: which, you know, sort of a poor man's DJI RNET now, as you'd say.

[1250.24] Curry: But if you look on any of the comments,
[1252.24] Curry: on any of the original Indiegogo pages or whatever,

[2638.19] AndyRC: So what was the circumstance of you falling out of a tree?

[2645.19] AndyRC: We're now currently in the Chinese festival, the spring festival.

[2656.19] AndyRC: And before that, I was getting chased for, like, reviews.
[2662.19] AndyRC: And there was one particular day where we had crazy winds, like 50 mile per hour winds.
[2670.19] AndyRC: We're getting that tomorrow, apparently.
[2672.19] AndyRC: It's pretty windy today.
[2674.19] AndyRC: Yes.
[2675.19] AndyRC: It's not nice.
[2676.19] AndyRC: But I thought...
[2678.19] AndyRC: So somebody sent me a 6S quadcopter.
[2684.19] AndyRC: And I thought 6S will punch through 50 mile per hour winds.

[2689.19] AndyRC: You know, I've flown in pretty hefty winds and had no problem.
[2695.19] AndyRC: And this thing...
[2697.19] AndyRC: I flew it around for a little bit.
[2701.19] AndyRC: But no matter how much throttle I gave it,
[2704.19] AndyRC: the wind just blew it into the top of the tree.
[2708.19] AndyRC: And the battery disconnected.
[2712.19] AndyRC: So I spent around...
[2716.19] AndyRC: I think it was probably about two hours.
[2720.19] AndyRC: And I had the DVR going on my goggles.
[2726.19] AndyRC: But the battery disconnected when it hit the tree.
[2731.19] AndyRC: And of course, with the wind being 50 mile per hour, you know, it was...
[2738.19] AndyRC: I think it was about 100 foot away from where the DVR footage last showed it.
[2745.19] AndyRC: And it was at the top of a tree.
[2747.19] AndyRC: And believe it or not, in the winter, a quadcopter at the top of the tree with no lights or anything,
[2754.19] AndyRC: it blends into branches quite nicely.
[2757.19] AndyRC: It looks a bit like a tree.
[2760.19] AndyRC: So I found...
[2762.19] AndyRC: So after about two hours, I found the battery on the ground.
[2766.19] AndyRC: And I thought, oh, it can't be much further away from this.
[2769.19] AndyRC: And of course, I couldn't have been further from the truth at that point.
[2775.19] AndyRC: And one thing I did notice is the battery had like...
[2780.19] AndyRC: It was damaged beyond repair.
[2783.19] AndyRC: So it hit like a tree trunk pretty bad.
[2787.19] Curry: You can withdraw your batteries.
[2789.19] Curry: The 6S is a little bit more expensive to murder, aren't they?

[2793.19] AndyRC: So it wasn't a good day because actually, it was a tattoo 6S battery.
[2801.19] AndyRC: They're about 30 quid.
[2803.19] AndyRC: The 4S equivalents of 27 quid.
[2806.19] AndyRC: So the price has come down now because 6S is more popular.
[2812.19] AndyRC: That's just how it is.
[2814.19] AndyRC: I still lost 30 quid though.
[2818.19] AndyRC: But the problem was as well that this was the first flight.

[2841.19] AndyRC: So I got a lost drone in a tree before I got any footage

[2851.19] AndyRC: Anyways, after about three hours, I spotted it swinging at the top of this tree.
[2858.19] AndyRC: About 100 feet away from where I found the battery on the ground.

[2966.19] AndyRC: There was nothing broken on the quad apart from the battery.

[2974.19] AndyRC: So anyways, all I ended up with was lots of cuts and bruises,

[2986.19] AndyRC: Yeah, but if it's windy, if it's 50 mile per hour winds,
