Big massive shout out to our Patreons. So these guys are the guys who [9.12] Jack: donate for the editing and they really do make a huge difference to keep the show alive. [17.12] Jack: We've been sponsored by Art Faulkner, Ferdy Evers, Mikey Dread and Under Fluke. [23.2] Jack: These guys are absolute legends. Thank you so much and see you next show. [30.0] Jack: Let's drone out now. Right, hello welcome to another wonderful episode of Let's Drone [44.59] Jack: Out. Tonight we are joined by Andrew slash Frank. Good evening. What is this strudel? [52.11] Jack: It's a little kind of puff pastry pie thing. That's the correct answer. We're joined by Andy RC. [60.51] Jack: Hello everybody. The chroma key master of the green green grass. We're joined by BMS. I like that. [71.39] Jack: Hello, hello. Long time no see. Definitely. Too easy or whatever it is you say. [80.27] Jack: We are joined by his spawn, Thomas. Hello. We're joined by what feels like my spawn because he's [90.51] Jack: the size of a toddler, my little Tony. Bonjour. And everyone's favourite curry kitten. [97.87] Curry: Hello and disclaimer, any views expressed by any guests on this show are personal and may not [103.15] Curry: reflect the views of the house. Also, the views of the house may not affect the views of the house [108.27] Jack: so ignore everybody. It may not be true. Not everything is true especially Tony and the [115.23] Jack: dead hookers and I'm right until I fly. Wow. It's okay. Thomas is now of age. [128.35] AndyRC: Right, good. First of all, can we get the type the title of the show out of the way? What does [135.07] Jack: it mean because I don't understand it. Oi, you're Australian. What does? [144.51] Jack: If I call Tony a drongo, what does it mean? Same as moron. [155.71] Jack: Tony's my little drongo. Anyway, can you decipher today's title? [161.95] AndyRC: What is today's title? Where is it? I'll read it out, shall I? It says episode 188. That's [170.67] AndyRC: amazing for a start. Then it says $20 Oz, a drone mate, crack the and then bleep. [179.87] Jack: Shit. Crack the shit. What does crack the shit mean? Oh gosh. That's just Australian, you know. [188.53] Curry: Is it something that requires getting the ute or not is the question, I guess. [193.73] Curry: Do you guys have utes today? No. You just hear them. Okay. [200.77] Curry: We don't. What we're asking about is there was a video that Bruce and I see model reviews [208.37] Curry: talked about being an introduction of a $20 registration fee per drone in Australia, [215.01] Curry: which means if you've got a wall full of drones, you're going to suffer. Is this true? Is this [219.65] Paul: coming in? Well, it is true at this stage. I know the M triple A, which is our model aircraft [227.57] Paul: governing body, they've just put out an email to all the members last night, probably about [233.97] Paul: seven or eight hours ago. What they said in that was if you're a part of the M triple A [240.29] Paul: and you're flying at a M triple A Casa approved, Casa's L that manages all their airways, [248.53] Paul: Casa approved field, you do not need to pay any registration or anything along those lines. [255.65] Paul: Where it gets complicated is, from my understanding, some of the clubs [261.25] Paul: are covered by M triple A, but they're not a Casa approved flying field. [267.49] Paul: That's where it becomes an issue. As far as registering every model drone you've got, [272.13] Paul: that to be just preposterous, that doesn't even make sense. I wouldn't even know how you would do [276.05] AndyRC: that. Is it just a proposal though at the moment or is it being put in place? Well, it looks like [282.85] Paul: it's going to be put in place. It's going to roll out, I think, in about another two or three months [286.93] Paul: time. It will be rolling out from what I can tell unless some major changes happen between now and [293.73] Paul: then. From what I can understand, Casa, which is our governing body, hasn't actually listened to [298.21] Paul: any of the feedback whatsoever. Not from the model aircraft people. It sounds a bit similar to here [304.85] Curry: where they've decided to implement something but they've no idea exactly how they're going to do [308.77] Paul: that. Absolutely, absolutely. That's probably the biggest issue. Any modeler knows the issue with [315.41] Paul: trying to register every model. Our models are changing all the time. If you're wondering why [321.17] AndyRC: Jack's on fire, by the way, if he weren't aware since your last visit, Jack and Sony have introduced [329.33] AndyRC: this thing where if someone donates on Super Chat they try and set themselves on fire for some reason. [335.97] AndyRC: I still don't quite understand it but everybody likes it and it seems that it encourages danger. [343.33] AndyRC: So while we have to pay $20 a drone, it seems Jack can just buy us in his house and have no consequences. [354.29] Tony: How many drones has Thomas got? If he had to pay? [360.53] Thomas: Well, right now I have many but if I had to pay then I've only got one working drone and a bunch [365.49] Paul: of static displays. Ah, yeah right, yeah right. And he took his bunch of static displays out [373.33] Thomas: yesterday for fighting. Well no, the drone is the antenna that swaps between them all. [380.77] SPEAKER_06: Do you have to specify which drone? Because I mean if you're only flying one at any one time [384.93] SPEAKER_06: then it's that one that you've registered, right? It gets even weirder. So you're like repairing [392.93] Thomas: a quad, right? Out of pieces from other quads. Does this one quad count as three quads? Or does [398.29] Thomas: it count as one new quad? Or does it count as one of the old quads? Which $20 does it take from? [405.73] SPEAKER_06: I mean knowing the aptitude of the uh... I'm only fair to hear it. Is it really a quad? [411.01] Curry: Well the people that make these things will probably be saying what make is it? Well what [414.37] Curry: is the serial number? And to answer that question you're like it's nothing so I don't think they're [418.69] Curry: going to have to record them anyway. What are you going to say? It looks a bit like an X and [422.77] Curry: it's got four motors on the corners. It's like oh okay we'll look out for that one. Well you'd just [428.29] AndyRC: register one wouldn't you? And then it's I mean it's not how can it be policed anyways? I mean [433.81] AndyRC: what Cassa turned up and you go oh no yeah all these are the ones that just display ones. [439.73] AndyRC: This is the one I've registered kind of thing you know. It's yeah it's just that's madness. [445.81] SPEAKER_06: I'm fascinated by this idea of Cassa approved flying fields like so they're going to like send [451.25] SPEAKER_06: an inspector round and be like yes you can fly here this is safe. This is a good field. Yes [457.65] SPEAKER_06: the field I can validate this is an empty space. Well funny enough we have that we we kind of have [463.57] AndyRC: that here as in if you if you want your club to be BMFA affiliated it has to meet a certain criteria [472.45] AndyRC: as in be a certain distance away from buildings people and property and stuff like that it's [480.93] AndyRC: you know it's just that if you want to fly elsewhere or whatever you don't have to pay [486.29] SPEAKER_06: 20 dollars or whatever. Yeah I mean everything BMFA is all pretty much voluntary like you're [491.33] SPEAKER_06: opting in yeah yeah the requirement it's not a thing. Yeah exactly. Yet. The thing is it's you [499.73] AndyRC: know they'll look at examples in other countries and think oh we can make we can make a bit of [505.65] AndyRC: brass out of this whilst that whilst that's how that's how we'll pay for it we'll charge 20 dollars [511.65] AndyRC: a pop you know that that's really good. A lot of money isn't it really. Is that is that as well [519.49] AndyRC: is that a lot is that is that sort of above 250 gram or is it everything as well I don't know. [528.37] Jack: Is your Roomba class as a drone? That's 20 dollars. [536.05] Paul: You know. Yeah it's pretty preposterous what they're proposing or what they're like for the [541.09] Paul: path they're going to go down. It sounds like they've already decided what they were going to do. [545.73] Paul: Got feedback from the community and just ignored all of it. So and the reason I say that it looks [553.89] Paul: far as flying drones which is what Thomas and myself essentially do. We're probably up there [561.57] Paul: with the most well known in Australia and I'm not aware of anyone that I've dealt with or I've [567.25] Paul: associated with this has actually been communicated with through or through cancer itself at all. [573.89] Paul: Like no one's actually I don't know anyone that's actually spoken to them other than [577.97] Paul: the M triple A. So yeah it's a bit of an issue. It sounds like exactly the same thing as the [586.37] Curry: government consultation here where they put out a bunch of questions. Everybody said this is [591.09] Curry: terrible idea and then they came back six months later said yeah we're doing it all pretty much. [596.21] Paul: Yeah no I think they're out of touch that's what the issue is and I think with Australia it has to [603.41] Paul: be a money grab. It's not about safety because you know what they're doing it's got nothing whatsoever [608.13] AndyRC: to do with safety. So yes that is. I think we may yeah we may have had a bit of dropout with you [619.49] AndyRC: there Paul. Okay. I understand the internet's not great in Australia for some reason. [625.33] Jack: Is it because you don't turn her upside down? [630.45] AndyRC: Wait a sec does Australia even exist apparently? Yeah tone. No I think Tony says it exists he just [639.17] AndyRC: he just thinks that there's a ring of ice that goes around her. Don't forget the dome. [645.25] Jack: The dome, the turtles, the membrane. I think we should stop this now. I want to ask both [654.61] AndyRC: Paul and Thomas I'm gonna I'm gonna do something unusual and ask a lot of drone related questions. [663.57] AndyRC: Because Paul's wearing a BMS racing shirt and I noticed the logo change on on the YouTube channel [671.33] AndyRC: still it's still BMS web but you guys have got some new motors. Yeah it's all done you look good. [680.21] AndyRC: Yes we could talk about that. Yeah so um yeah I got some I got some questions [688.61] AndyRC: because first I kind of don't follow I think racing's kind of hard to to follow it so it [697.09] AndyRC: seems it still seems certainly over here a little bit underground and over here a lot of people [704.45] AndyRC: uh that I know at least uh switch to freestyle you know going to spots and stuff like that so [711.25] AndyRC: I'm sort of bit out of touch with racing but what I found interesting about Thomas's video [719.41] AndyRC: regarding the motors was um how you guys have switched to a high rpm setup. So um do you want [730.05] AndyRC: to explain because it's always sort of been said that you know high height you don't really want [736.93] AndyRC: high kv for racing it's that middle part that you want for consistency so the switch to higher kv [745.09] Jack: and also I think it's more a Ford STI and he's crazy he's loose he's on the roads [755.09] AndyRC: no because isn't the 4S version 2700 kv which is which is very very high kv uh you know I mean [764.37] AndyRC: I've always been a fan of the high kv motors as well myself because I like noise that is the reason [769.57] AndyRC: why that has nothing to do with like racing right northern this is mating call yeah it's like read [777.33] AndyRC: with me putting a big put in a big exercise down it and it'll be it'll be winning yeah yeah [784.93] AndyRC: although I've since had to tame that down because of uh complaints of you know you know what we had [791.17] AndyRC: the strangest uh interaction actually oh this is going off topic a little bit but we went to a [797.89] AndyRC: we went to a location it was a public uh footpath and we were flying it uh over this fire duct it's [804.85] AndyRC: going to be a not over under the by adduction I say um and it's illegal reasons yeah there's no [813.41] AndyRC: problem there's no problem flying over over a by adduct I don't think uh but anyways um [820.69] AndyRC: we were flying and this woman came up to us shouting saying are you okay are you okay and [826.21] AndyRC: we were like what she said oh we thought we heard a child screaming and oh and it wasn't [834.45] AndyRC: it was it was my right Tony's not with this it it was my high kv motors and they actually said [841.97] AndyRC: it sounded just like a child screaming and we said no no no and then they were interested and [848.77] Jack: you know uh a Clarice when they slaughter the lambs it sounds like children screaming sorry [854.61] AndyRC: anyways I've gone way off topic Thomas I apologize let let them know why the kv [861.25] AndyRC: why high kv for both 4s and 6s because you've gone 2 000 kv for 6s which is [867.73] Jack: stop talking let them answer he's gone away now he's gone away let Thomas answer [876.05] Thomas: okay so I've been running well before that I was running those greatest I was running the [882.05] Thomas: what do you call f40 protos 2600 kv right so that was basically right when we went to [888.05] Thomas: our team at hq back in december 2017 and it was shortly after that we started doing all the [893.17] Thomas: testing in the lead up to the pro 3 and in the lead up to me me making my motors and so [898.77] Thomas: it was one of those things where like I played with the 60 protos and I could tell there was [903.33] Thomas: something going on under the higher rpm but I couldn't quite work it out I guess it just [906.53] Thomas: probably wasn't the skill state yet to really take advantage of it um but then we're just [911.33] Thomas: more experimenting and trying different props I found I started to prefer having lower pitch [916.77] Thomas: props um and basically to spin them up to a really high rpm it just sort of gave the flight [921.49] Thomas: controller a lot more to work with um and then also you got the benefit of then in order to have [926.53] Thomas: it say a grip uh a group racing quite like say sorry uh more like sort of cornering acceleration [932.21] Thomas: or to have more top speed you just change the propeller rather than change the motor kv [937.57] Thomas: so it works out a lot more practical for racing at least for me where it means that I've got my [944.53] Thomas: forest fleet my success fleet and that's it I don't need anything else I just have two different [949.17] Thomas: sets of props right now I'm just using the 3146 just because most props seem to work I say that [954.05] Thomas: props needs to work on like pretty much every track but um yeah this just seems to be a really [960.21] Thomas: consistent sort of setup um it's being really comfortable that's sort of how I describe it [965.25] Thomas: it's just like doesn't do anything sort of weird no weird quirks um on the 236 and a half still [971.73] Thomas: the very very very top rpm like you feel it starts to get a little loose but um that's just [976.61] Thomas: sort of the nature of the like less tall state of motors but um it's just being really comfortable [982.77] AndyRC: yeah I was gonna say you know um put put in that put in a high pitch prop on a 2600 2700 kv [993.49] AndyRC: 227 motor wouldn't that on a on a 4s I imagine would get quite a lot of voltage sag compared [1001.89] AndyRC: though is that so I guess is that when you bring the 6s rig out kind of thing is that is that the [1009.57] Thomas: idea tab two um for different tracks what we've found is we don't really know the reason but like [1017.89] Thomas: if you use the kv charts to sort of do a direct conversion from your 4s kv to make an equivalent [1023.25] Thomas: 6l it never handles the same it's sort of similar but you tend to have a little more of the power [1029.17] Thomas: on 6l at the bottom end and at the top end it tends to be actually less efficient than 4l I'm [1034.61] Thomas: not sure what the reason is exactly but like consistently over different setups different [1038.77] Thomas: motors we've found that so we've built the forest brick class motor to work better at sort of your [1043.17] Thomas: upper sort of power band so that's why I've also gone for like a 2207 and a half um really sort of [1048.37] Thomas: taking advantage of that upper rpm where 4l seems to work the best and then on the 6l one we're [1054.37] Thomas: really focused on getting as much out of that bottom end getting as much efficient bottom end [1057.97] Thomas: power um we should add to that success efficiency so if you run the 6l motor sort of like at the [1063.89] Thomas: limit the entire time I mean it's track dependent but like in general sort of thing um the 6l motor [1070.29] Thomas: tends to perform then like about the same as the 4l in flight time but if you just back off that [1074.77] Thomas: like 0.2 of a second power lap on sale like an 18 second track you'll actually end up with a decent [1081.01] Thomas: amount more battery left to actually complete more laps what do you prefer flying 6l to the forest [1086.77] Thomas: brick for me it depends on the day I've been flying both yesterday um on the track we set up [1093.81] Thomas: I was doing like five second laps on both so I was like do you want to be like I really love this [1099.81] Thomas: I'd do the other one I'd fly it differently but I guess the way the track was set out it would [1103.09] Thomas: sort of wouldn't really favor either one um on the 6l though I was running 1300 milliamp hours [1108.85] Thomas: so I ended up doing like four laps extra even um on that small track I guess just didn't build up [1114.05] Thomas: enough momentum where the weight mattered so much so um I really like the both they're both [1119.41] Thomas: different in their handling slightly different characteristics um I definitely prefer the [1124.77] Thomas: 4l for like your time trials but the 6l is very consistent over the course of the entire battery [1131.57] Thomas: so like well the 4l you might have say on a 12 second uh sort of lap like track you might have [1139.49] Thomas: say your lap 2 lap 3 lap 4 they like your best opportunities to set lap times and the rest of [1145.89] Thomas: the other ones are more like uh warm up and cool down and then your success pretty much from lap 2 [1153.49] Thomas: to say lap 6 lap 7 lap 8 however far you go it's gonna feel the same is there anything when you [1158.45] Thomas: like drop the battery to like 19 volts all of a sudden it's like whoa I've lost power [1163.92] Curry: yeah it sounds like you guys did a lot of testing wasn't it just a case of literally going out [1168.64] Curry: to the field and just flying and changing props and changing batteries and changing motors and [1174.96] Curry: was it a kind of this feels better or were you sort of like getting it on the stopwatch and [1180.64] Thomas: we run a lap timer for all of our testing we do a combination of track testing and straight line [1187.12] Thomas: testing so straight line I mean you have like basically like a two or three hundred meter [1190.32] Thomas: straight and you just have two heaven corners at the end and you try and get average uh average [1194.48] Thomas: speed and then we also have markers on cones laid out so even though it's not completely accurate [1199.28] Thomas: you can use the DVR to work at your approximate max speed um over like the center of the track [1204.48] Thomas: it where you're at your fastest um so we do a combination of both of that testing mainly track [1211.28] Thomas: testing just simply because we find that like a lot of the static thrust tests that people use [1215.36] Thomas: sort of gauge like how motor performers are how it performs like it gives you an indication [1221.2] Thomas: but it's not necessarily a true reflection of how it should perform um and really when you get it on [1226.16] Thomas: track and sort of try to fly it to its best so that's the other thing that's kind of hard you [1231.2] Thomas: got to you know you don't necessarily fly two three or six the same as you fly two two or seven [1234.88] Thomas: or you don't fly say um the jam fan 50 140 uh 50 140 9.9 as you would the HQ 50 146 they're [1242.08] Thomas: different handling props you have to treat them differently um and it's sort of basically just [1246.64] Thomas: through lots of testing through using a combination of the static dial to sort of get an idea where [1252.4] Thomas: you expect it to sit and actually just flying it on track and going hang on a second this one corner [1257.12] Thomas: just works stupidly well in this prop what the hell just happened to make this work and you go [1260.56] Thomas: okay this is how I need to adjust my flying or you just keep trying doing that corner tool then [1265.28] Thomas: you go oh there's magic again okay there you go back through your DVR black box logs whatever [1269.44] Thomas: you need to actually you know try and work out what just happened and then try to understand [1274.0] Thomas: okay now this how I'm gonna fly this to to do better Wayne Wayne what's this question that you've [1279.2] Curry: put in in our chat uh this this came from who did it come from I was just pasting in from the [1288.24] Curry: somebody from the chat someone from the chat I had a question there's two questions good work guys [1293.52] Curry: someone let me find it it says do the top racing rigs really lack power still and could a good [1299.84] Curry: pilot do well with a standard setup like a diatone bnf or something um so I don't know you know no [1306.64] Thomas: cords really lack power I mean like even if you're not using right now like the top top motors like [1313.2] Thomas: you're still looking at what a thousand six hundred thousand seven hundred grams of thrust [1317.44] Thomas: per motor when a whole rig weighs about 500 grams so I mean if you if you think that likes power [1323.76] Thomas: then I mean I don't know there's a lot of power to be like it's not compared to the compared to [1328.32] Thomas: a race quad they're like the way right now we're looking at two kilograms of thrust per motor I [1332.72] Thomas: mean I'd say no it's like like in parallel it's you got to handle it carefully um and obviously [1337.2] Thomas: too with the amp drawer you're pulling at say two kilograms because like whether you're you know [1342.88] Thomas: running crazy efficiency or not two kilograms of thrust is still two kilograms of thrust and that [1347.36] Thomas: power has to come from somewhere so it's like it's all about how you manage it basically if you burn [1351.92] Thomas: it all really quick in some hairpin corners then you're gonna have nothing left for the rest of the [1355.52] Thomas: track um you've just got to sort of manage it carefully you sort of you get used to it it's [1362.48] Thomas: really good way to do it if you want to sort of know what that feels like if you have some old [1366.56] Thomas: batteries that are like you know batteries sort of in that in that two-week period where they [1370.24] Thomas: start to sort of deteriorate really fast like if you've got a battery right on that level which [1374.4] Thomas: like they've lost like that sort of initial punch they have when they were new but they're not really [1378.32] Thomas: like a dead super saggy pack yet run that for like until it's down to about 15 bolts but try to go [1385.84] Thomas: like your maximum pace you can do safely and just experiment with where you put throttle on in [1391.68] Thomas: different parts of the track like you'll find there are some areas where you're almost better [1395.44] Thomas: off just letting it slide through and not putting power on and then you'll find you'll actually have [1399.6] Thomas: a little bit more power say maybe like an extra 10-20 percent that you can use in other places and [1403.2] Thomas: you just spread that out really really carefully and even though you're not necessarily using the [1407.76] Thomas: throttle the same way you would for say like a sprint race um you'll find your average lot of [1412.64] Thomas: times over the course of the entire pack will end up a lot better so what phrase your steam that [1418.48] Curry: came from by the way that question i was just gonna say what i what i love hearing about is um [1424.48] Curry: if you're not a racer like me it's pretty much you're just like oh i hope i can get through this [1428.72] Curry: hoop and then i hear thomas saying i'm trying not to use power here and just gliding through so i've [1432.88] Curry: got about 20 percent more to go around this turn it's like he's a pro there's the core management [1437.76] Curry: here and i mean like demo i didn't get through the hoop i'm on the ground never mind i i'm just [1443.36] Jack: imagining paul with like a white coat and like paul thomas like you know with the sticky things [1450.08] Jack: and wires like hanging off him and he's there with a with a board like you know he's standing [1455.36] AndyRC: with a clipboard yeah right things yeah aren't those called e meters and isn't that a religion [1460.88] AndyRC: i think that's the views of the show not the piece of the show that that actually actually [1471.28] AndyRC: leads nicely on to uh um what andy's put um mc creations question asks why 2306 for the i think [1481.04] AndyRC: is it the six s motor uh instead of 2207 no no actually he said why 2306 instead of 2207 but i [1489.28] AndyRC: think your six s motor is 2306 and the four and two two oh seven if i've got that right [1497.12] Thomas: it's actually well the we've gone two two seven point five and two three six point five um it's [1501.76] Thomas: one of the ideas we'll discuss with team motor back in like 2017 but it was sort of like [1505.84] Thomas: originally the six s motor was going to be a 2307 uh 1750 kv that was the first one i tested [1511.68] Thomas: and it performed really well from a control standpoint but it was a little bit heavy which [1517.36] Thomas: meant that 1000 milliamp batteries were pretty much off the cards altogether you had to use [1521.36] Thomas: the 1300 which it would be efficient on but you still have to sort of treat it a bit carefully [1525.76] Thomas: and the top end wasn't quite there how i wanted it like it would get to the top end but not sort [1530.96] Thomas: of a snappy as i was hoping for i think maybe just because of extra strain on the battery [1535.2] Thomas: so like a tall team motor about all that and they're like well why don't we try 2306 and a half [1539.6] Thomas: and then they also had some other fancy ideas they wanted to lighten up the murder a bunch and so i [1543.2] Thomas: was like yeah let's see what team motor can do right because the thing is a team motor and it's [1547.04] Thomas: always been like this when we've tried to do our own motors is that like you have an idea and team [1551.68] Thomas: motor is like i don't know three steps ahead to like 10 steps ahead so it's trying to i mean i [1558.64] Thomas: guess it makes sense because you know this is what they do this is their passion this is you know [1563.76] Thomas: how they're trying to sort of lead everyone so trying to stay ahead of a company whose job is [1568.24] Thomas: to work on motors and someone to or a group that's as passionate as team motor is really really [1573.68] Thomas: really hard so i pretty much like uh started off designing this pretty much on my own and then in [1579.76] Thomas: the end it was like you know what i've got cool ideas on my own i want to see what team motor can [1583.36] Thomas: add to this and then they did a bit of their magic and then the final result that we produced [1588.16] Thomas: i've been really really happy with so the um two three six and a half we're using for six cell [1593.84] Thomas: once again to take advantage of that bottom deficiency that six cell has really sort of [1597.36] Thomas: down pat um the other sort of i don't really know how measurable the benefit is but because you've [1603.36] Thomas: got sort of a more talky motor at the bottom end it means that it's going to cost less power to do [1609.6] Thomas: corrections and by corrections i'm talking about flight control corrections and also you as a pilot [1613.84] Thomas: making a mistake and putting extra inputs in to keep the quad on track right and so if you're [1619.36] Thomas: saving all that just a little bit right so you can save it a little bit with each mistake you make [1623.04] Thomas: if you have the flight control it has to put a correction in to keep the quad going straight [1626.24] Thomas: it saves a little bit more power than you would in the 2207 the idea is that because of success [1630.72] Thomas: the idea is you're trying to go for a more a longer distance is that that's going to accumulate [1634.88] Thomas: over the course of the lap and it really does accumulate so like even yesterday when i was [1640.56] Thomas: running i was running 2000 million for us on some runs and i was running the 1300 six cell [1646.0] Thomas: and i was getting on the say like different motors but like staying rest of the quad except [1651.28] Thomas: that we had one four cell one six cell one two thousand one ten hundred um the six cell i was [1656.24] AndyRC: getting like what four more laps two thousand say quite a lot for a four s as well what um [1663.68] AndyRC: yeah that's that's something that i noticed is uh it's funny because when we were all using 2205 [1669.04] AndyRC: 2206 motors we were using 1300 for 4s and then it went to 1500 and now i'm seeing a tattoo bringing [1676.8] AndyRC: out to that 1800 2000 milliamp for us and that is just to deal with the voltage saga i guess [1685.28] AndyRC: and actually because i i noticed that um that you mentioned that you like a lightweight setup [1693.04] AndyRC: um but i guess the uh the term lightweight is going to have to have changed that from my [1699.68] AndyRC: like what it was a couple of years ago because 2000 milliamp power 4s on anything is going to make [1706.48] AndyRC: it's going to make it uh you know maybe you're going to struggle to get like under a 300 [1714.4] AndyRC: gram copter that like without the battery i i guess or i i guess what i'm saying is you're [1721.68] AndyRC: saying you like a lighter setup but it's still heavy compared to a couple of years ago with the [1727.2] AndyRC: kind of like size batteries that we use at 1300 6s is heavy isn't it you know um 300 6s is definitely [1734.72] Thomas: heavy it's what it's also based on the track style that you use that on right so you look at say [1738.64] Thomas: multi gp the tracks tend to be bigger um they have some areas where you sort of like turn in on your [1743.68] Thomas: stuff so obviously they're going to use a lot of power having that extra momentum but sort of [1747.52] Thomas: overall having the extra milliamp hours works out more sort of cost effective for the time [1754.4] Thomas: you know basically trying to get the fastest lapse time you can and the most lap time [1757.6] Thomas: uh most laps so that's why we're using sort of your 300 6l um on 4cell i mainly use 1600 milliamp [1765.12] Thomas: power 4cell um i've only got two thousand really just to compare between the 4cell and then also [1771.52] Thomas: for the sake of the fa ishenzen race um that was like a i think it was 2.6 kilometers [1779.12] Thomas: race distance that you had to do on 4cell with a dji camera so we sort of had all those batteries [1786.8] Thomas: left which actually worked out really well because it meant that we could do these direct comparisons [1789.92] Thomas: between 4cell and 6cell a lot more easily because my other 3000s were a little bit old so [1795.52] Thomas: it's been good actually getting all that extra data now and being able to see directly for us [1799.28] Thomas: for 6l um i i had the lightweight stuff yeah so standard sort of i think five inch race weight [1808.08] Thomas: now is a round about the 300 gram ball park like it's in with 227s or 3006s um i thought the helix [1819.2] Thomas: i've been being running the helix lately um i used i ran the helix up until maybe oh gosh it would [1825.12] Thomas: have been turkey september i think yeah would have been so good been the last time i used [1830.48] Thomas: the helix in a race i still use the helixes for training and stuff because they're still [1834.16] Thomas: like perfectly good platforms um but then i jumped to the exp for a little bit and then [1839.28] Thomas: now i'm on a different frame again so are you allowed to say what frame uh yes the js one so [1847.6] Thomas: it's pretty cool i'm very very happy with uh running that one so it's been nice cool can you [1853.2] Tony: still keep up with your son or not or is he seconds ahead it's just stupid we raced yesterday [1862.56] Paul: we're having um just we've set together motors and and what have you and ironically the track [1867.76] Paul: we're on was a relatively small track i would i got down to was it 8.75 i think it was yeah [1878.16] Paul: okay um thomas always likes to keep three seconds ahead of me and with the track that [1884.24] Paul: status more three seconds was a stupid amount how close did you get uh i was point three of a second [1891.68] Paul: off point two so so you were doing five seconds something lapsed is that right yeah 5.86 was the [1900.0] Thomas: best i did so i got like a few others i was very happy and then i was like i could go further but [1907.04] Thomas: i'm also like getting tired and i'm making mistakes now and i'm like one of these mistakes [1910.88] Thomas: is gonna break a quad and then it's gonna suck so i'm just gonna be happy with what i got and then [1917.68] Tony: next time i'd take three seconds off the champ that wouldn't be too bad [1925.71] Thomas: so yeah that was good fun that was really good fun it was like it was a really small track just [1930.27] Thomas: because we were sort of we were both a bit tired we just didn't have the best sleep and i was like [1934.11] Thomas: i just want to practice the big thing i'm sort of having or not really having issues but i think [1939.07] Thomas: next thing i want to improve sort of in my flying that's sort of like immediate focus for me is my [1943.87] Thomas: changeovers from moving left to right so whether it's a slalom or just any kind of time where you [1949.95] Thomas: are changing the uh center of thrust from the left side of the quad to the right side of the quad i [1954.59] Thomas: want to like sort of get those transition points down pat so the track had a lot of like left right [1960.19] Thomas: left right but it was sort of instantaneous so lots of slaloms offset gates that kind of thing [1966.19] Tony: i don't see anything wrong with any of your flying at all whenever i see you i'm just like wow [1973.23] Thomas: i think it's one of those things that like you know i think when you're flying yourself you can [1978.59] Thomas: sort of pick your own flying and you're like oh i didn't intend to do that but then when you like [1982.43] Thomas: watch someone else you're like oh that's really good like oh can you take my dvr and i was like [1988.43] Thomas: this it looks fine to me it looks really great like there's nothing wrong with it and then they're [1992.91] Thomas: like i'm aware of this mistake that mistake it's like well it's one of those things i think it [1997.07] Thomas: depends like as the person that flew the pack you can sort of you know you can see more basically [2002.19] Thomas: because you know what you were tending to do and what the dvr should look like so to speak [2007.47] AndyRC: so yeah yeah i was interested when you said um you you're basically you were doing some tests [2013.47] AndyRC: uh in cut in like straight straight line speed to sort of like see what the difference in average [2019.79] AndyRC: speed between your two motors were and are there actually um races that are done like that or was [2029.47] AndyRC: that is that just a test that you were doing to to compare the motors because this is something [2035.15] AndyRC: i think we're missing i and i say i probably say this every two or three episodes i think [2041.39] AndyRC: we should be doing drag racing with quad copters but but people do drag racing in australia with [2047.55] Thomas: quads they usually have to make the fun meets but we do have drag races i haven't done any of them [2052.83] Jack: um it's just it's not my interest really but um sorry about him he's like still back in the early [2060.67] Jack: 2000s and fast and furious andy i see you living your life a quarter of a mile at a time i still [2067.23] AndyRC: got i still got the blue lights under my car although it's a diesel yeah although it's a [2072.11] AndyRC: diesel ashtray it's not it's not quite as uh you're gonna have that fully stick under the layer [2076.91] AndyRC: and the yeah the thing is though we're like our our quad copters are even worse than that these [2085.15] AndyRC: days they're covered in our ladies so we can't say anything about all right it's all about the [2092.43] AndyRC: ldo family yeah i've i've only a big chain i think like though around a racetrack um i mean i i mean i [2101.39] AndyRC: i pro i'm probably not in a position to say because like you know i don't do racing but [2105.79] AndyRC: i think um these these cocked i do a lot of speed runs and that's how i've learned i'd [2111.55] AndyRC: like i've got a radar gun and it's a it's pretty accurate as inconsistent uh which which is um [2119.47] AndyRC: why i've i've got certain information on the differences between uh a 2207 and uh a 2306 [2129.31] AndyRC: data and funnily enough like when talking about top speed um the fastest copters that exist are not [2138.11] AndyRC: five inch when it comes to top speed they are three inch and uh i wondered what you you thought about [2144.83] AndyRC: about have you have you ever maybe flown light and when i'm talking to like um three inch there's [2152.35] AndyRC: like three inch copters can do uh you know 112 mile per hour whereas most uh race copters that i [2160.67] AndyRC: built with a 2207 or 2306 are doing 103 mile per hour now you could argue that as thomas's average [2169.23] Thomas: right hang on 100 okay so 112 is 180 that's what my heels do about two years ago [2178.03] Thomas: so i mean like in kilometers yeah yeah so sorry i was like i was 112 miles yeah 180 i think that's [2186.91] Thomas: about the same as five inches too i've uh we've got a test three inches someone gave to us um [2192.59] Thomas: at the avlon international air show race to try it's like a full 3d printed shell thing that's [2197.95] Thomas: meant to be like a super efficient um like sort of straight line monster so i need to try it i just [2204.35] Thomas: haven't had a chance to bind it up yet um and the other thing is too because it's three-day printed [2207.87] Thomas: i'm kind of terrified of like you know if i hit something what the result is um it's somewhere on [2216.75] Thomas: like the big like shelf thing in like the table room it's in my bedroom i told you never to come [2223.47] AndyRC: in my bed oh no that's andy you see the fastest uh when it comes to speed but the fastest um [2231.71] AndyRC: five inch cut so i've ever recorded it and this was a it was actually a floss you know the um [2237.95] AndyRC: kebab uh floss but the v1 um it weighed i think it was 225 grams they got 2206 motors on them but [2248.11] AndyRC: they were they were almost i think just shy of 3000 kv oh look at that thing what is that it's [2255.79] Paul: like a little piggy it looks like a vase this is the quad that thomas is talking about um he hasn't [2262.43] Paul: tested it he's better to test it out it's not too much ready to go how it looks like it's designed [2267.07] AndyRC: to be a drag racing thing it looks tricky to land not rather than a race oh it's cool it looks like [2274.35] Jack: a launcher a mix between a codcopter and a butt park [2280.99] Jack: i was waiting for something along those lines um what's a butt block [2287.15] Thomas: so yeah that thing goes because like i've never designed a quad like that um so yeah i mean you [2293.31] Thomas: know it'll be interesting to see how it performs and someone else's i've been finding i've been [2298.91] AndyRC: finding you know when when uh when building uh race copters uh against these three inch copters [2308.91] AndyRC: uh also what what i think is missed with the three inch copters um you can you can thrash [2315.39] AndyRC: it and still get i mean we're talking full throttle most of the time and get a three minute [2320.59] AndyRC: flight time if you back off you can get a five minute flight time um whereas with the five five [2326.99] AndyRC: inch it's sort of two minutes and you and whether it's six s or or um four s short your your battery [2334.67] AndyRC: that at the end so i i can't i can't have this theory but maybe i'm completely wrong because [2339.47] AndyRC: again i don't race from what i see from at least the top speeds for three inch certainly is an [2345.95] AndyRC: out pacing um five inch and when you say uh your helix did like a hundred and a hundred and eighty [2353.95] AndyRC: going back to the the fastest five inch that that i ever built it did 125 actually no no it wasn't [2362.51] AndyRC: the floss it was the mode two by the by the rc addict that was it it did 125 mile per hour and [2368.27] AndyRC: that's the fastest i could get a five inch uh to go but these modern uh and these modern race [2377.95] AndyRC: copters with the two three stator um i i find that top top end top speed is not their thing it's [2385.63] AndyRC: it's the it's the middle part which is great around a racetrack but i wouldn't i wouldn't [2391.15] AndyRC: put my bets on it on a two three stator motor in a drag race i don't think i'd go really light i [2397.63] AndyRC: would go high kv and i'd go small in in stator size um because that's what i found from like [2405.87] AndyRC: you know my speed tests and stuff um but obviously the racetrack and uh and in a straight [2412.19] AndyRC: line is obviously or should i say drag racing is a completely different ball game as it is [2419.07] AndyRC: with you know racing cars you know yeah formula formula one cars are designed to go around corners [2425.55] AndyRC: quicker you know um you know there are there are jet drag cars that would absolutely destroy them [2432.27] AndyRC: you know so i suppose it's that sort of thing but um yeah i was just interested in i wonder how [2439.95] AndyRC: thomas would get on with some of these three inch copters that i'm i'm building or even the rtfs [2446.67] AndyRC: uh you know i got i got an rtf three inch model so it was actually made by skyzone they don't [2453.07] AndyRC: make it anymore and that's the one that got 100 112 mile per hour which like it says about 180 [2459.39] AndyRC: uh kilometers which are incredible speed for such a small model and it's under the 250 gram [2466.83] AndyRC: limit uh which just ridicules that that weight as well i think because uh you what you wouldn't [2473.39] AndyRC: want that even though it's so 250 grams i would not want that flying into me so anyways that's uh [2480.19] Thomas: we won't go there i wouldn't mind i wouldn't mind trying one of those three inch frames i know all [2484.03] Thomas: the three inches i've tried haven't been faster than my five inch rigs um or add more flight time [2488.67] Thomas: but it could just be the batteries and stuff i'm running like the one the quad i've actually had [2492.51] Thomas: a lot of success with is a two and a half inch but we go down to these really small like 1106 [2497.47] Thomas: motors and stuff yeah and like those i guess because the weight like the weight just drops [2503.31] Thomas: right off the quad all of a sudden you got like a quad that might be say like 140 grams that goes [2507.71] Thomas: down to like 70 something and then it's like those are fun like i guess the surface area you [2513.79] Thomas: get with the props for like you know the power you're able to put into them is really good [2519.31] AndyRC: yeah yeah i think it's really specific as well what i'm talking about because there's quite a [2524.43] AndyRC: broad spectrum of three inch models because um the this these three inch models that i'm talking [2531.79] AndyRC: about like brute force so that they're running 15 stator motors you know uh fit like 1506 1507 [2541.47] AndyRC: uh you know um but then there's some people running like 1106 on three inch and those aren't [2548.59] AndyRC: aren't quite as fast you know so um i i would say like if you're trying three inch i'd be really [2555.15] AndyRC: interested in uh what you thought about these um you know big beefy motors that are on on [2562.51] AndyRC: on the i would say the 15 stator motor is you you would if you go any bigger than that i've [2567.55] AndyRC: tried 16 stator on three inch and then you start to lose performance because the uh the motor is [2573.63] AndyRC: too big or or whatever but i'd i'd love to uh see you try like a three inch copter uh with like [2581.07] AndyRC: some gem fan they there's a whole um community who are into this you know the the the best prop [2588.51] AndyRC: is probably the the gem fan 30 uh 30 52 so high pitch prop um but because the battery is almost [2596.43] AndyRC: as big as the copter people people don't like that either but it does look a bit weird it looks weird [2602.19] AndyRC: but they're just mad and because they are sub 250 gram they turn on a dime when i'm when i like try [2609.55] AndyRC: and turn a five inch really quick um there's there's a delay with these three inches you can [2616.03] AndyRC: be on full throttle and do a complete u-turn and it does it instantly because it there's so much [2622.83] AndyRC: lighter i've seen thomas do that with a five inch yeah well this is what i'm saying imagine what [2627.39] AndyRC: he could do if i if i can't do that with a five inch like what i can with a three imagine what [2633.55] AndyRC: thomas can do as well so i i'd love to see i don't want to try it can you save me a build list of one [2638.75] Thomas: of these have you built this would be the best track performing one i think there's a good [2643.23] AndyRC: ready to find one isn't there uh no comment on that one at the moment [2649.71] AndyRC: there may or may not be some issues with with this doesn't reflect the view of the show or host [2656.03] AndyRC: yeah but he didn't mention it and then how you been man you're right [2661.79] Paul: no i'll be fine i mean we've just been busy with um all the projects that thomas has had going [2666.03] Paul: which is just um a lot demanding on time are you you're not awake are you mate [2680.91] AndyRC: i'll send those specs over thomas and uh and see what you think about them yeah it's funny [2686.83] Thomas: actually one of the other guys the ek guys that we met at the so do you guys know about the midrt [2691.63] Thomas: the military international drone racing tournament at all yep yep oh yeah so the british armed forces [2699.15] Thomas: guys one of them actually runs uh four inch pods and he's building these six cell four inch [2706.11] Thomas: quads that i think way 200 grams to turn into something i think a lot with battery and his [2713.55] Thomas: latest dvi he posted was really really fast it was really impressive and that was with the four [2719.71] AndyRC: links are sticking the chair this is something this is something else that's happening with three [2726.51] AndyRC: inch um i i've got uh coming on the way to two different uh six s three inch cutters and i'm [2734.59] AndyRC: excited about those because when what you do that account when the problem is the batteries don't [2740.19] AndyRC: exist so and nj for me enough helped me to make a connector uh i don't i haven't got it [2748.03] Tony: jack could make you a battery i've seen him do that before it's quite scary two three s in series [2752.99] AndyRC: then yeah two three yeah yeah two three s in series basically yeah um so and when you do [2761.39] AndyRC: the calculations of the kv motors that they are using it's higher than uh four it works out higher [2768.03] AndyRC: than four s when you do the you know the the whole times the kv by the um the number of volts etc so [2775.63] AndyRC: uh yeah so three inches going six s as well which i think is quite exciting yeah so i had a question [2782.59] Curry: for you guys and it's about we sometimes talk about um the racing scene over here and it was [2789.39] Curry: kind of like a few years ago there was like a great big explosion like this is going to be the [2792.91] Curry: next big thing this is going to be massive everyone's going to be doing it and it seems to [2796.43] Curry: have sort of died off a bit and some people have left the hobby and you know we're sort of [2800.51] Curry: public enemy number one in a lot of places because of fake incidents at gatwick and stuff [2805.87] Curry: so i just wanted to get your interpretation of how it was in australia towards the popularity [2810.67] Curry: of drone racing how the public feel about it is it still growing do you think it's a sort of more [2815.79] Curry: mainstream than it was or has it sort of it's got its own scene now um in australia it's definitely [2821.23] Thomas: grown a lot bigger than what it was and it's definitely still growing um i think probably [2825.55] Thomas: the big difference is that a lot of people have gotten used to the rate at which the hobby is [2830.67] Thomas: growing used to say with your i know say with racing you get used to improving at a certain [2837.15] Thomas: rate right you expect to go to a training session at level a and by the end of it be x amount better [2843.95] Thomas: than what you were at the start right and i think what's happened in the hobby is especially with [2849.15] Thomas: how explosive the growth was from like nothing to what it is now people have gotten used to [2855.71] Thomas: how quickly it's growing and like that rate of growth is now considered normal so whatever it's [2861.07] Thomas: a bit below that or a bit high even if it's still growing it feels like it's not growing as like as [2865.87] Tony: it should be you've got a little bit more space to fly as well there haven't you yeah we we do have [2871.71] Paul: more space and we're kind of lucky in that sense and we've also had um two events that happened [2878.27] Paul: one last year one this year really helped um promote i suppose drone racing in such a positive [2884.27] Paul: way we had the midrt which was uh run by the australian army um and it was for military [2891.79] Paul: personnel that thomas attended as a vip guest of that so that was really good because the army got [2896.51] Paul: sort of got behind it and said look this is a really good sport it's positive um for injured [2901.07] Paul: soldiers uh all the way through to stem programs and just basically you know people learning and [2906.11] Paul: you know developing uh and then from there uh only a couple of months ago i think it was [2912.67] Paul: we had the um what was the call was the australian international um air show drone racing happening [2919.63] Paul: and once again that was run by the australian army and that was running uh a full-on drone [2924.59] Paul: race at the australian international air show so that was another big positive event that was [2930.19] Paul: actually run i mean you've got the australian army sort of saying this is a really good positive [2933.71] Paul: sport and it's really hard for castle or anyone else to turn around and say well no it's not [2940.83] Paul: we've had their backing so in that sense it's actually been really really positive i think [2944.11] Paul: we've had a pretty a pretty good run in australia at the moment forceful takeover yes [2953.87] Tony: can we can uh are your motors for sale in um england yet and you know who sells them in england [2961.15] Thomas: i was just gonna ask that myself i should uh it's i think we you add that you put on the youtube [2969.07] Thomas: link in the description i know i know you can get them from get app pv because that's what i'm gonna [2975.23] SPEAKER_06: say like our u.s audience is still bigger than the uk audience so yeah it'd be a better one [2981.15] AndyRC: i'm going there soon so i imagine i imagine even if uh because i i guess that that's not up to [2988.19] AndyRC: thomas either you know it really it really what shops it ends up in i mean you know [2994.99] AndyRC: like our our favorite stores quad copters drone is life uh hobby rc i guess they will find ways [3004.03] AndyRC: to get them and stop hopefully we would hope um i i guess it would be the answer to that otherwise [3012.35] AndyRC: you know yeah can you smash in the place oh i i suppose the question we could ask the question [3019.31] AndyRC: will that will they be available um like in chinese stores because a lot of people buy [3025.31] AndyRC: from those stores you know the banggoods and the hobby kings will they be there do t-motor have [3032.35] AndyRC: i think t-motor do have their motors on there or are they cloned is it you can buy t-motor from [3038.43] Curry: banggood are they are they real t-motors there's the question yeah yeah no i've got no idea therefore [3047.31] Paul: one of the uk stores that should have them i think you know you know you're the guest right and [3052.43] Jack: we want to hear you say stuff so don't just type stuff okay i'll just go through andy shut up [3061.15] Paul: sorry um but yeah we haven't sort of been in control of the distribution or anything like [3066.59] Paul: that i mean the only main input we wanted with the motors was how they were going to be built and [3070.75] Paul: i mean thomas drove t-motor absolutely nuts your motors were supposed to be at what six months ago [3076.27] Thomas: tom uh more than six months ago they were like mid 2017 wanted to do this and it was early after [3082.35] Thomas: the we met with t-motor in china i was like okay i've got an idea what i want to do like literally [3087.47] Thomas: okay so i had the idea in china of like what i wanted it to look like just like looking at their [3092.59] Thomas: meritors so the stuff they did i was like okay i know what i want to do when we flew home i had [3098.27] Thomas: maybe five hours of sleep woke up and then it was about like it was just times that we got into [3102.91] Thomas: australia and stuff it was like sort of morning and so then i woke up had an idea i had breakfast [3108.35] Paul: and started designing wow that's and it was making sure that it's worth mentioning too that [3115.87] Paul: when he actually did all the design work and all that and once we started getting motors manufactured [3120.75] Paul: he kept going backwards and forwards with t-motor getting him to re-manufacture other [3125.31] Paul: prototypes because he wasn't happy with them and literally drove i reckon he would have driven them [3129.55] Jack: absolutely totally nuts i was gonna say are you sure you know like the backing of the army [3136.43] Jack: do you mean backing as in they're trying to clone thomas because i've had a bit of a run in with old [3144.59] Jack: frank disclaimer needs to be read again i think yeah maybe i don't make a missile go that fast [3153.63] Paul: they weren't interested in recruiting you were they told i want to recruit you [3157.07] Thomas: the i work for that was pretty good that was pretty funny so that was like it was great at [3162.27] Thomas: the midrt it was like i joined navy for this this i joined army for this this and this they're all [3166.91] Thomas: things that they actually do really cool stuff i think it was quite just a work experience with [3170.11] Thomas: the army too um in the lead up to the midrt and like a lot of the stuff they do even though i [3175.95] Thomas: couldn't obviously see everything because you know i'm a civilian like the stuff they could show me [3180.27] Thomas: was pretty spectacular i was like damn this is actually a pretty cool lifestyle so um i think [3185.55] Thomas: it's cool how like this it's like it's its own community like on base like they've got like their [3192.59] Thomas: shops there and like and um like a tail thing to like fix up all the clothes and like have everything [3198.51] Thomas: all nice and done properly and it's like it's like it's whole a whole community but like [3204.67] Thomas: on a military base thing and there's just like helicopters and it's like oh that's a really [3209.15] Thomas: cool military helicopter flying past and oh we're gonna work on that one today that was that was a [3213.71] Jack: lot of fun i really enjoyed it so did they try and send some nice looking army women over to try [3220.91] Jack: and recruit in that would have been my show sorry frank carry on i was gonna say what because you've [3227.55] SPEAKER_06: been to a lot of um a lot of quite big races now what's been your proudest title oh i really don't [3238.35] Thomas: know i okay i think probably the one it's hard to say i guess they're all i mean almost i've been [3246.51] Thomas: to have had a cool story right and at least for me i like them all but like i think maybe my best [3253.23] Thomas: one would have been the ire like that was two wins that was a spec race and the world cup but [3260.83] Thomas: sort of the way the races happened and the way everything sort of built up in climax and the [3265.63] Thomas: final race and even the fact to add schoolwork in between so it was like this massive like scheduling [3270.91] Thomas: balance like the whole story that led up to it i guess that's probably the one that's got the most [3276.03] Thomas: meaning for me and the most sort of backstory so it's the one i sort of connect with the most [3280.67] Thomas: but then for the same turrican like my last uh race at the aussie european and the australian [3286.67] Thomas: international air show like that was probably the strongest racing i've ever done where i mean it was [3291.71] Thomas: a combination of things going right which really happens at races but it's like the things that [3295.07] Thomas: normally go wrong just sort of didn't go wrong but like even i was really on it the entire event [3301.39] Thomas: um i was just comfortable which i mean you have in practice days but having that happen at a race day [3308.43] Thomas: was probably like the one of the best things i could ask for so that's probably the most [3312.83] Thomas: sort of things went to plan which is really satisfying but then the ire sort of had the [3319.63] Thomas: story and the climax which is something that's definitely better to tell as a story and it's [3325.39] Thomas: something that's probably more rewarding so what's what's the ire sorry yeah where where is it based [3331.87] Paul: uh monty indiana is the ire so international is prepared you they're multi-japan international [3338.43] Paul: open okay no there's also there's also not races but you haven't won that have been just as rewarding [3348.27] Thomas: like shinzen yeah shinzen was a really rewarding one there was a few although a few things are [3352.43] Jack: rewarding about that time he was very disappointed in you or your performance then so me and tony [3358.75] Thomas: watching that and i was there too yeah oh yeah i was like it was um the track was really cool [3366.99] Thomas: and i was really happy like i was on pace and all that was nice um so you went down tony's opinion [3374.43] Thomas: it was all right it was a race it was um they had a few they had issues with the broadcasting [3379.71] Thomas: equipment blasting on 900 uh megahertz so professional racing guy but um with our setup [3390.19] Thomas: though that we got for that that's awesome we were doing like at pronounced at that point [3393.39] Thomas: i'd already committed to like what murder sizes i wanted and stuff so my motors were already like [3398.11] Thomas: pretty much well on their way at that point but we had f60 protruders on that setup uh 2700 kvs [3404.11] Thomas: with the 5146s and pretty much everyone at the event was like those motors are too high kv that [3409.39] Thomas: could be able to make the distance and those props uh too aggressive a pitch and we're not [3413.71] Paul: running big enough batteries and like everything was wrong later the motors the props and the [3418.59] Thomas: battery were considered wrong by everyone yeah and then but we had we had a lot of tests started [3424.83] Thomas: sort of back up because the track was released two months early so we had our test already worked [3428.75] Thomas: down we're like this should work like we both agree that the setup seemed wrong like we were [3433.07] Thomas: expecting to run 23 a6 24 but the data indicated it wasn't wrong yeah and so there was a few reasons [3439.39] Thomas: for that like say props flexing and stuff uh just sort of scratching the surface but we like we're [3444.91] Thomas: like this app should work from the data we've got and it worked way better than we expected [3451.87] Thomas: like we've had this uncomfortable voltage and it was just perfectly controllable the [3457.31] Thomas: throttle range we expected to be hanging in where it should be most efficient we were in the whole [3460.51] Thomas: time for the race um so when things were going right it was just like great and and the the rule [3469.07] Paul: proof was um just before the final just crashed out because of uh lockout with um crossfire so [3477.63] Paul: we lost control it crashed out and basically went into instead of the top four the next four i think [3483.79] Paul: it was that right tom as in uh fifth all the way through to eighth and um when you were in that [3490.35] Paul: division thomas at that point it really like cracked that because it was really changed off [3493.87] Paul: that it wasn't in the final so it went out um and we just got to smash the time as best he could [3501.15] Paul: whoa so he's hit whoa oh wow so you set the fastest it was that fastest time tom [3509.87] Thomas: uh that was fastest race time yeah it was about six seconds faster than the final [3517.07] Paul: and the beauty was that that was definitely without data fast lap when he landed he landed [3522.35] Paul: on 3.75 herself so that set up we absolutely nailed tom you can tell he's in he can tell he's [3530.27] AndyRC: in australia how would that be tony i think he has a flat oh well he fell off you let something [3539.79] Thomas: slip there to nothing oh with the stands those stands are so slidey like they had a rubber on [3546.83] Thomas: there but it was like whatever was on the top layer like to make it smooth like it was actually [3553.23] Tony: slippery so that was annoying but oh we were all just gutted for you when when when it went wrong [3562.99] Tony: we were like no we all shouted at the tv and stuff but it was yeah i really was i was hoping [3569.55] Thomas: for a bit more just the way i was performing but it was actually a really good like i remember it [3574.35] Thomas: was a cool event from obviously you know the track of spectacular the racing was really great [3578.59] Thomas: but meeting everyone there because there were a lot of people there that i hadn't met before and [3582.67] Thomas: a lot of people too that i met like in hawaii two years ago and so being able to meet up with [3588.27] Thomas: all those people was just like it was really good it was like um i also the event was like [3594.99] Thomas: the racetrack and everything was good but they ran the event really slow you get like an average [3598.51] Thomas: of two batteries a day so that's basically two packs and then you'd spend the rest of the day [3605.79] Thomas: just like catching up with people that you hadn't like spread into in ages or people that you know [3609.31] Thomas: they're spreading to online and so it was one of the few events where i got to actually spend time [3616.03] Thomas: with people more properly and actually just like you know you do you have your first your two [3621.71] Thomas: minutes of focus or like eight minutes of focus and then you would be like okay now we can talk [3626.99] Thomas: to people i'm really on the like the race day and the first practice day when we had heaps of packs [3631.87] Thomas: you like focused on the flying primarily but then the rest of the days you could actually just like [3636.43] Thomas: talk to people which is kind of cool yeah that's a bit i don't miss it the brits we were [3643.23] SPEAKER_06: conspicuous by our absence apart from eric on race control yeah what happened to us no one went there [3651.79] SPEAKER_06: didn't they we're not allowed to we're really upset them i think we just managed to not get [3659.79] AndyRC: ourselves organized in time from what i could tell shall i read out frazier's question to thomas [3665.55] AndyRC: yeah last question it says it says an evil genie forces you to swap your flying skills [3672.59] AndyRC: with another pilot so that you can race against yourself who do you swap with what a great [3678.27] Thomas: question um oh what's up i think i'm on my on my webcam thing just an advert [3691.79] Thomas: i was like i'm gonna use this app and see what happens it's just giving out your [3695.15] Thomas: your credit okay wait what's the racetrack what racetrack are we on [3699.47] Thomas: anything tom anything anything the evil genies one but like is it so are we talking like a [3706.27] Thomas: your favorite indoor track your favorite your favorite track oh gosh what's my favorite track [3712.99] Thomas: i have so many favorite tracks wait big truck a small track uh oh my god tom you're killing me [3718.11] Thomas: big truck okay um it's sunny i'm probably gonna swap with mck i'm gonna swap with minchana i [3728.67] Thomas: think on a big track i think that it that's yeah and i think if it was it was a tight track i [3735.71] Thomas: probably want to swap with evan because evan's like the god of tight tracks right now so yeah [3742.19] Thomas: heads up fbb he's like he's got that down pat so i think it was tight track yeah i'd go evan [3747.47] AndyRC: big track i'd go minchana i think it's fair to say that you probably do race yourself in a way [3752.59] AndyRC: though anyways to bet yourself as in you know you'll record it a lot of time and you are racing [3757.95] AndyRC: essentially yourself to do better so you kind of do yourself yeah yeah i think it's um i know i like [3766.03] Thomas: i a lot of people like the social sort of i like social flying too but i actually i find i still [3771.23] Thomas: get a lot out of just training on my own and just sort of like you know having sort of the track to [3775.47] Thomas: myself and going okay now how am i gonna approach this how am i gonna approach that i think it's a [3779.39] Thomas: it's a balance like you know if i did just the the flying on my own without socializing with [3784.59] Thomas: people that like it wouldn't work and i think if i just like flew all the time with other people [3788.27] Thomas: and didn't spend sort of time on the track with just myself sort of focus on like that wouldn't [3793.15] Tony: work either that's the worst thing isn't it about turning up at a track and you've got you get [3799.31] Tony: sometimes i've been to races when you turn up you get one battery and you've got that's it you're [3804.43] Thomas: racing your next we have some i think it depends on the meet if you get any big meets yeah it's [3809.79] Thomas: like that but um like a lot of the like they say east side practice days and stuff are really [3814.43] Thomas: relaxed and so you just sort of like you put your name on like a like a board to like queue up on [3818.75] Thomas: your uh on your channel yeah and then they just cycle through it and so you actually get a lot [3824.35] Thomas: of batteries in like pretty much i think i've only done it maybe four or five times like i usually [3829.95] Thomas: just do uh small meets with other people but like when i've gone to the proper east side practice [3834.03] Thomas: days um like you i've gone through all my packs every time pretty much except for the one time [3840.11] Thomas: that i came there like midday just let someone try a quad and then i had to go so i didn't get [3845.79] Thomas: two batteries but like and they're every other time they did but it was funny it was okay it was [3853.07] Thomas: just like one dumb mistake and i kind of like you know when you let someone else use your quad on a [3857.07] Thomas: race stroke with other chords you sort of expect okay i'm probably gonna go wrong so it's not that [3860.83] Paul: big a deal i i knew it let me share the story this is tilted fpv uh one of our mates [3869.71] Paul: he was in australia without a doubt um he wants to try to toss his 2000 kv 6s motors is that right tom [3877.79] Paul: yeah okay so he wants to try those motors out and thomas had the prototypes that they were [3883.95] Paul: hand wound and everything but they were pretty much exactly the same as the [3887.07] Paul: production ones other than not having the riding on them so um tilted's going to fly thomas as [3892.27] Paul: quite and i've told him these are the only four motors in existence yeah flew really well loved [3898.35] Paul: it and happy to take one wrong turn and had a full on head on with someone and what did you do to [3904.43] Thomas: the money killed it didn't he um yeah well just um it popped off on the mck because the motors [3910.03] Thomas: only have like two bolts for support and it doesn't have any carbon to support the other bolts [3913.95] Thomas: um when you have a crash the motors just sort of fall off and then rip the wires out so [3919.23] Paul: yeah that's really really bad we put it with the funniest thing ever that's the [3927.39] Thomas: because i already had the production ones coming and i like you know i just wanted other people [3931.07] Thomas: to experience what the motors were like before they you know went for it so that way like yeah [3936.19] Thomas: you know why not people see what the motor feels like before they buy it because we were in that [3939.55] Thomas: position so yeah that was good so it was cool to watch him fly it actually and watch him handle [3945.39] AndyRC: and get used to it so good feedback blind testing i guess you could call that yeah yes yes right guys [3954.19] Jack: we've got to call it there but uh thank you you've been listening to ledge throw now uh you've been [3960.19] Jack: joined by andrew slash frank bye you've been joined by he might be able to breathe through his ears [3969.54] Jack: oh wait he's single like me andy i see good evening everyone thanks for watching i'm listening [3977.54] Jack: he's very sexy ladies just so you know what was that [3983.22] Jack: yeah good morning or good evening depending on where you are [4001.38] Jack: we've been joined by sponsored by in low hd brings hd footage to your phone thomas [4014.18] Tony: we've been joined by my little tony bonjour thank you too for getting up early i know it's [4019.3] Jack: early over there yep oh god it doesn't hang out with you yep we sent nj over as our mediator [4028.42] Jack: that was a little while ago though i know hopefully he will be back soon we've been [4033.38] Jack: joined by our little drop bear tony bonjour and my favorite curry ken goodbye and i must [4042.82] Curry: just read out ladders last one it says thank you goodbye to jack's foreskin [4050.74] Tony: it's not going though it's gonna be with me [4057.06] Tony: so if you want to come and say hello to jack's foreskin or [4059.94] Tony: have it around my neck at the uh mini air show ah it's not really [4065.38] Jack: the birth of me yeah uh and i've been brought until i fly and i'm so sorry about this show [4077.14] AndyRC: telemetry last
