[0.0] Jack: Hey guys it's Jack here, big massive shout out to our patreons. So these guys are the guys who donate [9.84] Jack: for the editing and they really do make a huge difference to keep the show alive. [17.12] Jack: We've been sponsored by Art Faulkner, Ferdy Evers, Mikey Dread and Under Fluke. [23.2] Jack: These guys are absolute legends. Thank you so much and see you next show. [30.24] Jack: Hello and welcome to another episode of Let's Drone Out or we are on his kitchen table. [68.88] Jack: But anyway, tonight you are joined by... not Andrew slash Frank, I hope you get better buddy. [75.36] Jack: We are joined by Andy RC. Good evening everybody. [80.24] Jack: Simon Newton. Hello cheers. How is your kitchen table? I'm not on it because the kitchen table [86.56] AndyRC: is full of kids arguing. I've never seen Simon without, it's either strong tea or strong wine. [95.6] AndyRC: No it's strong coffee or strong wine. Oh sorry coffee is it? It's too late for coffee so cheers. [102.56] Simon Newton: Tonight's beverage is Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah blend called Dada and it's very good. [110.64] Jack: I'm drinking antifreeze in celebration because they've caught the cat killing a python. [116.48] AndyRC: How have you got one of those mugs? That's not fair. Why do you want this mug? [122.24] Jack: I bought it for a guy who doesn't appreciate Simon and he wouldn't accept the mug. [131.36] AndyRC: So you can have it if you want it. When I was first starting out my channel like it's Simon's [138.08] AndyRC: channel on the kitchen table it was like that was the the starting point and yeah it was I was [146.08] AndyRC: like this is a great format and stuff and so it was one of the... The whole bloke talking [151.92] AndyRC: was a great format. It's what we all aspire to. Yeah but you made a lot of videos back then and [159.52] AndyRC: your channel was growing incredibly and I can remember when you hit I can't remember the [166.32] AndyRC: subscriber number but no one had seen what you looked like and then like you hit a certain number [171.2] AndyRC: of subscribers and then you showed your face and I was like ah. You lost half of them overnight yeah. [178.48] AndyRC: No you didn't. You did not lose half of them overnight. I lose half of mine overnight just [184.4] AndyRC: for saying I once flashed a picture of Trump for a joke in a video. I lost 80 subscribers [191.04] Jack: just from doing that. Yeah. Carry on Jack. We were also joined by... [199.44] Jack: I don't shut the hell up this is what I do. We joined by my little Tony. For sure. [210.32] Tony: Hello. Disclaimer we should just read that before we even start talking. Any views expressed by [217.6] Jack: any guests on the show are personal and may not reflect the views of the hosts or any participant [222.32] Jack: of the show. Please ignore all of us rural idiots. And I'm Brighton to the fly. [230.56] Jack: So that's... I don't know whether you've ever watched this show before. Sorry. I have. I really [239.04] Simon Newton: apologize. Sorry. I have to say that so far it's living up to expectations. [243.84] Simon Newton: I'm neither shocked nor disappointed. Brilliant. Well that's how we like it. [252.88] Jack: So the last time I saw you was at the last UK drone show which probably might be the last one. [264.08] Jack: Because I for a laugh tried some of the email addresses of the UK drone. They all bounced back [273.52] Jack: so I don't even... I wouldn't be surprised if later on this year the domain goes back into the [281.52] Jack: but you were you were at the CAA stand. Yeah. Yeah that's right. Do you work for the CAA or [290.8] Jack: would you like to repeat what you said before the show started? Yeah no so I don't work for the CAA. [296.8] Simon Newton: I'm not employed by the CAA but the CAA I think so and you'll remember from those halcyon days [302.64] Simon Newton: back in 2013-14 when there was an awful lot to say about drones every five minutes which is why [308.64] Simon Newton: there's an awful lot of videos and why recently not an awful lot. One of the things I always used [313.76] Simon Newton: to say right from the start was I was promoting doing the right thing. Whether you agree with it [318.72] Simon Newton: or whether you don't there's there was a whole bunch of aviation law that you had to comply with. [323.76] Simon Newton: I used to fly microlights on my lapsed private pilot so I always had sort of one foot in that [328.16] Simon Newton: kind of and I remember doing a video where I suggested if you've just bought you know [333.04] Simon Newton: bought your Phantom maybe it's worthwhile before you go out and hoon it around the country so I [337.12] Simon Newton: just check in a few things give it a few little pre-flight bits to make sure that's going to [340.24] Simon Newton: fall off or the prop. I remember getting a comment from someone underneath from America going [344.72] Simon Newton: hey dude it isn't a 737 man you know just chill out and I said well no but you can obviously afford [350.32] Simon Newton: 1200 quid to plummet to the ground and smash to smithereens. I just like to check that it isn't [355.44] Simon Newton: going to do that but I've always sort of had that just I don't know like just think about it a [360.4] Simon Newton: little bit. Don't be a d**k it's kind of the summary of what we've done. What we've been saying all [365.68] Tony: along. That's Jack's magic word. Don't be a d**k and don't be on fire. Yep that's my two rules of [374.56] AndyRC: fighting. We sort of break the fire rule though to be fair. Well we haven't actually because we've [380.72] Tony: had no one giving us any money to set fire to anything so if you're out there and you want to [387.12] Tony: donate to help us please. We've backed up with fireworks we've had no donations for a while so [395.36] Jack: if you want to donate please do. 10p will do to be honest. We haven't any donations so Frank's like [402.96] AndyRC: I can't deal with this anymore. We didn't have donations because hangouts screwed up on us though [408.56] AndyRC: right? Last week it was all right wasn't it? And then last week it was yeah but it was a serious [414.96] AndyRC: one you know people like donate for Jack to say something stupid so you know it's the unserious [422.72] AndyRC: ones where you'll get the most donations you know. I spent unserious as a word but I like it we're [428.8] Jack: going to ram it now. It's a northern term. I'm taking apart this lipo battery so this show might [436.08] Simon Newton: get interesting. Are you doing it with a nail? Yes Mikey thank you Mikey. Just be very careful [442.8] Simon Newton: because that very professional looking pop shield I reckon is very flammable. No it's made of metal. [447.84] Jack: Made of metal. It's already. I burnt through a few of them in my day. It's so nice of you to invite [457.28] Jack: this filthy casual on. It's so lovely. Well I mean someone's got to because like you've you know [464.0] Jack: you're a traitor to the old you know pilots because you fly the old dronos and then and then [469.84] Jack: you abandon your show to Ollie uh I think that's his name and um to do the UK drone show. I did. [481.04] AndyRC: Is that the story because I like I when I. Is it Ollie? Yeah yeah Ollie Ollie. Mr Oliver O'Brien [489.36] Simon Newton: who was the the founder and so so the story behind that is he he and I think he pitched it [496.08] Simon Newton: just right because I don't know if you remember the you know the the buzz around the first couple [499.68] Simon Newton: of them whether whether the show went well or not it's irrelevant but there was a lot of interest [503.76] Simon Newton: in it so he picked the right time to get into drones. He spotted the the market point and he [507.92] Simon Newton: just approached me as some old bloke on YouTube and said could you give us some advice some help [514.56] Simon Newton: could you let us know what is you know have you got any contacts because obviously by that point [519.44] Simon Newton: people were sending me stuff. I thought well this is quite a good idea and and I did suggest to him [523.68] Simon Newton: that you know um you want to kind of embrace all as many parts of the hobby as you can and and [531.2] Simon Newton: actually maybe try and make it so that we don't get that whole these bloody new drones there [537.44] Simon Newton: they're all peeping toms and they've all got their snapbacks on backwards flying through power [542.88] Simon Newton: stations. So the first one um I wasn't involved at all um and just he just said oh thanks for your [548.72] Simon Newton: help would you like a stand and I went what all right whatever and that was a bit freaky because [553.76] Simon Newton: there were like people you know queuing for selfies and that really freaked me out and that [557.2] Jack: was the beginning of the end to be honest. I stuck a sticker of a penis in your lunchbox. [563.12] Simon Newton: There were there were many stickers of many body parts some on my back that was the second year [570.32] Simon Newton: um and then and actually Ollie and um and his business partner said to me oh do you want to [574.88] Simon Newton: come on board uh more formally for the next one and I sort of said I thought about it and went [580.56] Simon Newton: yeah okay because this this could be I think we you know we learnt a few things and other bits and [584.56] Simon Newton: pieces and you know and I think the the second one was was it looked better there were some things [589.68] Simon Newton: that were better about it there were some things that didn't work I thought the the the racing in [594.4] Simon Newton: the separate hall was pretty damn cool um but then after that we just had some some very pleasant [600.64] Simon Newton: differences of opinion about the direction and both and sort of just parted ways on a very friendly [604.88] AndyRC: and amicable basis um wasn't the uh sec wasn't the second one in conjunction with some gaming [613.12] AndyRC: uh event like insomnia or is that something that was a separate thing so there was a move [620.4] Simon Newton: from so insomnia the gaming festival who were owned by game who looked like they're about to [626.0] Simon Newton: be bought by matey boy from sports direct at the moment it's called a game easy yeah yeah [632.16] Simon Newton: yeah so they said look I get they they were again trying to sort of it's one of these festivals [637.92] Simon Newton: where you pay a big upfront ticket price to go for four days and so you expect to be entertained [643.44] Simon Newton: so they wanted to bring on some new stuff and they said oh this drain racing has appeared in [648.08] Simon Newton: newspapers a bit can we put something on um and they wanted to do it as a sort of demo we thought [653.44] Simon Newton: that'd be great get a crowd in but for the first year they wanted it not not with any [658.8] Simon Newton: proper bike spectators so it was in a separate hall on its own in the dark at the far end [666.0] Simon Newton: age and all vip is coming that's normally what happens with drone racing in any event isn't it [670.96] Simon Newton: well exactly and we all know the best part of it is the flying and not the watching but [675.52] Simon Newton: you know if they were going to make a move it looked immense it was brilliant but again they [680.16] Simon Newton: they I don't think anyone could work out a way to make it look sexy for an audience so that they [686.32] Simon Newton: sort of get into it I think people thought oh it's the latest thing we must have it we must say [691.36] Simon Newton: we've got it and no one had a clue how to actually then take it and make a spectacle of it that [696.72] Simon Newton: people would get if you fly you get it if you don't you need to be sort of shown what it's [704.32] Simon Newton: about and even then it's really difficult isn't it you you know this very difficult to to to see [711.36] Simon Newton: what's going on it's over so quick you need really good commentary you need really good secondary [716.8] AndyRC: screens yada yada yada all that it's not it's not a visual spectacle it is the issue like an [724.08] AndyRC: air show is where or the large model association uh which which which is its biggest uh issue unless [733.76] AndyRC: they're big ones yeah unless they're they're big but you can't really fly those in not indoors [740.48] AndyRC: no i'd be surprised if you would could fly in x-class in that space you know so that that's [746.08] AndyRC: this issue being indoors I absolutely loved the NEC show this year it was the first one that I [752.88] AndyRC: went to and I I was trying to sort of chase you around Simon because I've been like a bit of a [758.48] AndyRC: fanboy I thought I saw you uh I I saw you like vlogging and I was trying to photo bomb you like um [772.16] AndyRC: anyways I met you briefly but you were chatting to was a guy from uh the military or something [778.32] Tony: somebody far more important probably yeah oh well that that's more than ndlc I don't think there [784.48] Simon Newton: is anyone more important it may have been somebody from the military but um in fact because the [789.2] Simon Newton: thing about that was the guy and it was really interesting and this came out again uh an event [793.84] Simon Newton: I was at um I was at duxford last weekend which is where I caught this so duxford you know these [802.0] Simon Newton: no it's in cambridgeshire at duxford it's the imperial war museums like airfield where they [806.8] Simon Newton: got big hangers full of warbirds and they also put on regular air shows there was one [811.04] Simon Newton: tiger moth there is great yeah exactly so there's one last weekend it's the first air show of the [815.92] Simon Newton: season duxford air festival I think it's called and the ca were there in a hangar with gnats and [821.12] Simon Newton: with others and we we had a come and have a go kiddies uh mini drone cage amazing the number of [828.16] Simon Newton: people who'd never flown one before we had cues out the door wanted to go and have a go and the [832.56] Simon Newton: message was twofold one to people who hadn't known about it that you know drones are good things [838.24] Simon Newton: they're great fun there's some rules you need to think about and also there was a bit on the drone [843.28] Simon Newton: registration which I'm sure we'll come to in a minute um for us to be berated by mainly fixed [849.12] Simon Newton: wing modelers actually um but that was really positive and the RAF were there as well their [855.68] Simon Newton: safety cell and they are they are promoting the system whereby if you're going to fly your drone [860.0] Simon Newton: somewhere where you think there might be some low flying military hardware ring this number [864.72] Simon Newton: and tell them and I thought oh what it means is they'll go you can't fly there because the reds [868.56] Simon Newton: are coming through on no if you tell that you could be anonymous you tell the RAF where you're [873.04] Simon Newton: going to be what time rough location they'll put on their system a big no fly ring and they'll [878.24] Simon Newton: divert all the low flying jets and helicopters away from that's amazing I could have really [882.72] Jack: done with that number a couple of years ago what were you flying the fire shut up Tony stop talking [892.48] Simon Newton: thank you we need to promote the fact because a lot of people will naturally think that this is [898.4] Simon Newton: going to be a oh you know you can't we're not letting you but as he said it's open airspace [903.36] Simon Newton: we all share yeah that's the whole thing about the the thing is just we've all got so the fact [908.08] Simon Newton: that the RAF are quite happy for any any person who's just going to do anything even if it's pop [913.2] Simon Newton: up and take a photo bit of video or bit of hooning around you can ring a number and they will stop [918.96] Simon Newton: the tornadoes going going to where you are that is pretty bloody amazing isn't it they probably [924.88] AndyRC: wouldn't on the mac loop but anywhere else I think the mac loop you might be oh but having said that [930.48] Simon Newton: I I'm not sure I haven't looked I think the mac loop is in a designated it is yes military area [937.76] Simon Newton: so you shouldn't be in there anyway but anywhere else though of course as they said this is that [940.96] Simon Newton: the RAF guy said technically if it's open airspace military jets are allowed down to 250 feet [946.24] Simon Newton: anywhere in open airspace and in fact the reds will quite often go down quite low when they're [951.04] Simon Newton: doing the summer season between like they hop between air stations I live just down the road [955.84] Simon Newton: from RAF Benson every August they have like a private air show for the for the families [960.4] Simon Newton: reds come right over my house do a display then tonk off at like 600 feet and go somewhere else [965.28] AndyRC: also uh the the reds issue a notam for every flight don't they I know this because I am the [972.72] AndyRC: red arrows geek so um yeah I think you're a fan boy or well I'm always like make your other hand [979.52] Jack: Andy about this I'm gonna talk about both hands up I told you man dead to me it would take a hammer [987.68] Jack: to get that going there's two two really interesting things from that uh little conversation [993.92] Jack: firstly I didn't know the military just had the allowance to fly it like 250 wherever they liked [1000.64] Jack: and also I didn't know there was a number you could call that be really useful it's not wherever [1005.28] AndyRC: they like they have to issue a notam and you have to look at the notams but what but I think [1012.96] AndyRC: what's important is how do we get hold of this where what's this number where's the number [1019.2] Simon Newton: organized and remembered that I was coming on I'd have probably had it to wave at you [1023.52] Simon Newton: but in a minute I'll disappear off into my inner sanctum and get it no that's that's cool hello [1030.4] Simon Newton: you know helicopters they're they're a bit more vulnerable um you know because of it they're [1036.4] Simon Newton: they're the screens on them are not so thick etc etc etc so and also obviously if you know if you [1042.24] Simon Newton: get a uh an impact on a rotor blade then it it glides like a brick so so yeah there's this kind [1048.8] Simon Newton: of general there's a general I think there's two sides to it there's a side of the people that [1057.04] Simon Newton: think right okay uh everybody's out to get us the hobby is being compressed you know the guys I feel [1062.24] Simon Newton: really sorry for the guys who've been flying sort of like traditional flicks fixed wing remote [1066.88] Simon Newton: control for 50 years yeah so I really get why they are like absolutely they hate us well it [1077.76] Simon Newton: they do and they don't I think it depends on the club I was talking to somebody last weekend [1082.08] Simon Newton: chairman of a club of a certain age even older than me if you can believe it who turned around [1086.88] Simon Newton: his opening gambit when I said to him well do you do you have any pilots who you know fly drones as [1092.08] Simon Newton: well as we said we don't allow them in our club we don't even allow helicopters we're fixed wing [1097.36] Simon Newton: only and I sort of thought well you know that's fine but where are you going to get your next [1104.24] Simon Newton: generation because you know surely yeah that's a thing a little a small a small drone with some [1112.96] Simon Newton: fairly good automated systems is quite a good entry level from to flying remote control stuff [1119.2] Simon Newton: in general because it's easier there isn't the sort of the price involved you don't necessarily [1124.32] Simon Newton: have to be stuck on a buddy box with some old fart for three hours to just be able to do a simple turn [1130.08] AndyRC: the biggest problem with those guys is they just haven't tried it because I was I I was in a club [1136.32] AndyRC: agreed I was in a club that and we had this at mini air show because mini air show was it was [1143.28] AndyRC: great because we had the FPV but then we also uh got in that well I say we I had no party playing [1151.2] AndyRC: big jets and some of the alamay guys and uh jack sort of um made did sort of like a crossover [1160.56] Jack: and I like calling it cross-contamination [1166.4] AndyRC: trust the streams so there were these guys flying these big massive petrol uh extras [1173.52] AndyRC: you know 3d models and jack went up with his uh with his five inch model and flew around them [1180.4] AndyRC: and the footage was just incredible and then all of a sudden these these guys came over to the tent [1186.08] AndyRC: and said right so how do I get into this then you know and I think it's just because they [1191.76] Tony: haven't been exposed to it and actually just took on a their first quad pilot [1199.84] Tony: joker joker vision he's actually now their first ever quad [1205.68] AndyRC: I wanted to ask how that happened but I that will be going very off subject so [1210.64] Tony: maybe well that has happened they've they've like I know I saw I saw they wanted to know they they [1217.2] Tony: enjoyed the x class they enjoyed him flying they enjoyed everyone flying around and now they [1222.4] Simon Newton: kind of got into it so well I think that's a great I think that is a great thing [1228.32] Simon Newton: you guys because and I actually mentioned this to another couple of people who came up to me [1232.48] Simon Newton: and spoke from a from a model club who are a bit younger a bit more open to it and I have to say [1238.56] Simon Newton: to them look you know have you got any links with your local kind of FPV flies because I tell you [1244.96] Simon Newton: what you would love it if you got air to air shots of your models because it's the only viewpoint of [1251.68] Simon Newton: them you know you you put on the ground take pictures of it but how about getting somebody [1256.32] Simon Newton: in to actually chase plane you effectively with a drone and they were like all over that like a [1261.84] Simon Newton: rash they were like that's some we never thought of that they never think of that because it's not [1267.12] Simon Newton: it just doesn't it just doesn't register on the radar now your standard off-the-shelf mavic is [1273.52] Simon Newton: not going to get it's not going to be fast enough it's a 400 foot tripod let's face it for most [1278.96] Simon Newton: people however you and what you need is the people with the stick and rudder chops to to [1285.04] Simon Newton: to follow you around and a lot of these guys who spend hours and hours and thousands of pounds [1290.08] Simon Newton: building these scale things what better thing than for somebody to come along and go a two what for [1295.12] Simon Newton: after now do you want to follow you around get some air to air review they've been wet themselves [1298.88] Tony: and I think that's a great way of bringing the two sides together that is I'm going we've actually [1304.0] Tony: got a barbecue thing this weekend coming this Saturday or Sunday where it's lots of old boys [1310.8] Tony: with their scale planes and um no kind of there's a couple of them who liked our drones and actually [1317.2] Tony: start flying drones now is that the dorm patrol guys is it uh no it's just at my local club just [1323.36] Tony: down the road oh right there's some of them they need a hug they need they need some tony love [1330.48] Tony: they need a hug and they they just don't like drones it's like all the grass cutters blah blah [1336.08] Simon Newton: I think that's partly because they have learned how to fly the hard way yeah with many crashes [1342.32] Simon Newton: and no gyros and so they think that most of you go to Argoth and buy something for 600 quid [1348.32] Tony: and just cause everybody to die I was flying hq props what snapped when they looked at a twig [1354.56] Jack: three years ago yeah like me me and tony you've definitely done it the hard way yeah what you're [1359.76] Jack: saying simon about the the old guys having this perception of drones is is absolutely right [1365.52] Jack: what it was is they just thought that nothing is flown it just flies itself you're not doing [1370.48] Jack: anything that they hadn't taken into consideration there is there was a camera drone and then there [1375.44] Jack: is a sort of race quad type thing and lots in between as well as soon as they knew that and [1381.6] Jack: knew what went into flying them and the sort of the the skills you had to have I think a lot of [1386.4] Simon Newton: them were a lot happier with it I agree I think a lot of the guys who've been doing it for donkey's [1390.32] Simon Newton: years they do see themselves as pilots and they don't see the drone people as pilots in the sense [1397.2] Simon Newton: of having that learnt skill that takes a long time to money you cannot just get one and do what you [1405.2] Simon Newton: do you just can't do that and I don't think they appreciate that because most of the publicity and [1410.16] Simon Newton: the advertising and the stuff that goes on the front of the daily mail when there's a near miss [1414.8] Simon Newton: is the picture of the phantom with the little eyes on that somebody who put that up on this [1418.56] Simon Newton: stock photo site just making a fortune and it's all this off the shelf flies itself all [1424.16] Simon Newton: that you just have to touch screen from here to here and it that that's a I get why they are [1430.0] Simon Newton: very much looking down their nose at it because there is you know there is no skill is there [1434.72] Simon Newton: you know if you want to if you want to do one of a panoramic shot or a point of interest shot with [1439.6] Simon Newton: a maverick you just press the bloody button whereas when it gets really sharp keeping the [1445.6] Simon Newton: frame air to air footage of a scale model you've got to work hard on those damn sticks boys so [1450.88] Simon Newton: you know there is a there is definitely a lack of appreciation for the for the hand flying side of [1456.56] Simon Newton: the drone hobby having said that I don't think we ought to denigrate the people who use the off the [1461.92] Simon Newton: shelf drones as big tripods and glorified kind of you know uh stabilized video cameras because you [1469.44] Simon Newton: know there's there's no doubt that there's some cool stuff uh some cool views of the world that [1474.08] Simon Newton: come from that that can be put in the hands of of of you know amateurs rather than pro filmmakers [1480.24] Simon Newton: so however there does need to be a little bit more understanding I think between those two [1486.88] Tony: two strands does that woman in a chat says we've uh we've blown the old boys minds at our clubs [1494.8] Tony: just with the 4s batteries alone the fact that we've built our own quadcopters from scratch [1500.08] Tony: than the looks and comments I've had as I'm a girl who can solder yeah yeah well done well [1507.92] Simon Newton: my daughter consoled her as well I think it's a very good life skill and in fact that's another [1511.6] Simon Newton: thing that I think you guys when I say you guys cheers Bruce I mean you know the people from the [1517.76] Simon Newton: the more um the less off the shelf end of the hobby one thing that's brilliant I was working [1523.76] Simon Newton: with a local school um earlier this year they one of the design technology teachers approached me [1529.76] Simon Newton: and said could you help us run a little bit of a drone club and they've gone and bought these [1534.16] Simon Newton: basic boards with basic frames and then what they've done is turned it into a whole series [1539.36] Simon Newton: of after school stuff where they 3d print learned how to 3d print and design their own frames for [1543.92] Simon Newton: the boards they learned how to fly which is my very little input into it they learn about um [1550.4] Simon Newton: branding they had two teams so they did like a logo and all this kind of and they just basically [1554.4] Simon Newton: the drone thing was a brilliant entry into this was a girls school a brilliant entry into all [1559.44] Simon Newton: sorts of stem science programming flying design and that is a fantastic uh I think a fantastic [1567.68] Simon Newton: pro for um for the whole drone hobby about getting people into you know like just even [1575.12] Simon Newton: something to which to you guys is second nature but just you know okay they've designed and 3d [1579.6] Simon Newton: printed this little frame and they put it in it starts to shoot off so they need to tune everything [1583.6] Simon Newton: they need to get into the programming system and start to do some stuff all that stuff with a [1588.16] Simon Newton: purpose to win the competition or whatever is brilliant and that you keep saying you keep [1593.52] AndyRC: saying you guys though simon but i know from your early days of your channel when even when you were [1600.72] AndyRC: buying DJI stuff before the phantom came along you were building that stuff you were you had the [1607.44] AndyRC: flame wheel you had the nut yet so so yeah i'm afraid i'm afraid you are us guys you know which [1618.64] Simon Newton: you know what i wasn't one of the whole reasons why i got into it and making a youtube channel [1622.64] Simon Newton: was sheer laziness because i saw like i'd stopped the last flight in my uh private pilot log book [1628.4] Simon Newton: was a week before my first child was born and that he's now 12 and a half and yeah so kids are [1633.92] Simon Newton: expensive and more expensive than airplanes so i then yeah i then wanted to i saw but i always [1641.2] Simon Newton: wanted to do fly stuff and that kind of view from above and and but i was not i was not technical i [1648.16] Simon Newton: didn't want i saw people with the phantom one soldering go pros into it and adding extra things [1653.2] Simon Newton: as i was not interested in it was the phantom 2 vision bless it um that got me thought of thinking [1659.2] Simon Newton: wow this is a sort of off the shelf thing that i could do and it was only after that actually it [1664.16] Simon Newton: was only after getting the vision that i thought do you know what if i buy a flame wheel kit like [1668.56] Simon Newton: this which isn't doesn't seem too difficult maybe i can teach myself a bit more about how it works [1673.92] Simon Newton: and that was actually the trigger having an easy entry point and then having taken the bloody lid [1679.36] Simon Newton: off the thing because i got bored typing out on those forums about what it was that's why i started [1683.6] AndyRC: youtube because i was too lazy to write much same here and i'm dyslexic so i i can't spell that [1690.56] AndyRC: and and also in you inspiring me between you and paying the 360 flight test bruce simpson [1697.76] AndyRC: specifically because um i was the same i didn't understand how any of this worked and then hubson [1704.96] AndyRC: came out with their spy hawk and and and bruce hated it right because i think he he understood [1712.4] AndyRC: the diy aspect very uh obviously knowledgeable on the diy stuff and he's looked at this hubson's [1720.32] AndyRC: spy hawk and said it's a toy you know but i got it and it just worked and that and from that point [1728.16] AndyRC: on i flew it i did fp that got that was actually the barrier because i i always flew planes and i [1734.72] AndyRC: was dead against fpv as well people would be surprised to hear but i was like that's not [1740.32] AndyRC: going to add anything but then the subson spy hawk was in maplin right and i just bought it [1745.92] AndyRC: it was it was on sale and i instantly everything just worked and he gave it a bad review and that [1753.84] AndyRC: was actually the start of my channel because i was like no you've given it a bad review because [1759.92] AndyRC: you uh a sort of kind of old school like the diy aspect of it this was perfect for me and then [1767.2] AndyRC: that then led me into investigating okay now i've got this thing that you can buy off the shelf [1774.72] AndyRC: let's figure out how it all works and then that was the birth of my channel you know so so um yeah [1782.16] AndyRC: it was your your your channel palest flight test and bruce even though the bruce is kind of a [1787.36] AndyRC: negative one but i still love bruce bruce he came actually in the chat last week this is x chat [1793.44] AndyRC: hopefully we can get him on probably not now i've just said that but bruce i still still it'd be [1799.28] AndyRC: awesome to get you on yeah yeah i think we all do in a way don't we but it's interesting what you said [1807.52] Simon Newton: because i was going to get i was going to get one of those um uh first and then i thought oh i've [1813.12] Simon Newton: haven't got a like a useful field anywhere near me and it was at that point researching alternatives [1818.32] Simon Newton: because i haven't got any to want to spy on yeah i like the fp exactly there was no there was no [1824.16] Simon Newton: that around that i could really get a close up here but it was looking around for alternatives [1828.64] Simon Newton: and then suddenly this this this kind of dejoy phantom vision uh was coming out so i went a slight [1834.96] Simon Newton: the opposite way way around but yeah it was if back then if only we knew where we'd be now [1843.36] AndyRC: i mean spy hawk looking at thinking i think that is the worst you might can you imagine i know can [1849.04] AndyRC: you imagine if the if dji came out with the spy hawk to spy on people but funnily enough they [1856.16] Jack: should put like pictures of girls in bikinis on the front like you could be looking at these [1860.08] AndyRC: without the notice drone yeah i love the spy hawk so much that when they released the hubson [1869.36] AndyRC: h 107 d that did exactly the same except it was a little tiny micro thing i was sold so [1876.4] AndyRC: hubson for me even though they absent taught me how to fly yeah most people but it's a shame [1883.76] AndyRC: that they've they've not progressed like the other like like dji for example oh man they made massive [1890.88] AndyRC: mistakes they did the x x4 pro was announced and it was in progress for two years and by the end of [1899.04] AndyRC: the two years the phantom 3 just walked all over it didn't it so uh yeah i love my x4 i used to say [1905.44] Simon Newton: to people if you're if you've bought an off the shelf drone get get get a little hubson and just [1911.28] Simon Newton: practice because after that after that if you've bought a dji it's a it's a piece of cake however [1917.28] Simon Newton: back in the day i remember doing a video about uh and this is what people used to do white drone [1923.92] Simon Newton: bloody milky white sky they've got it at the edge of their vision they can't tell what bloody [1928.0] Simon Newton: direction it's going of course there's no no screen no bloody no and and of course the the [1933.2] Simon Newton: stick and rudder skills that you learn on your little hubson in the in where you're trying to [1936.96] Simon Newton: dive bomb the cat get you out a bit of because suddenly if it is facing towards you or slightly [1942.56] Simon Newton: acutely angled you know you're used to that opposite control input and you can bring the [1947.28] Jack: thing back yeah i i flew those little hubsons i mean i i was doing building dives with them [1957.44] Jack: like back and i snapped an arm off it and that's what made me take up soldering again [1962.8] AndyRC: because um hang on there was a guy in who was it in the chat i used to take the flight controller [1968.64] AndyRC: and the motors remove it and put it on a picnic quads frame that made it lighter and then that [1975.28] AndyRC: started the whole money pimp your hubson yeah that's that was the bit that was the basis it made me [1981.84] Tony: i flew phantoms and then i flew hubson because i wanted to fly properly a proper acro which [1989.68] AndyRC: yeah without yeah you could do like no gps hold and all that it was the gps hold they still had [1995.36] Tony: stability and stuff they did and i flew stability for a long long time tony tony taught me how to [2002.08] Jack: fly acro as much as the i give tony he is the reason i can fly now when you look behind you [2011.12] AndyRC: then jack do you feel guilty if he's the one that taught you how to fly as i can see very clearly [2017.28] Jack: i'm happy with my life it's all good as a 40 year old uh i had i had never held a soldering iron [2025.6] Jack: and i found that the hardest part of the learning process so a little weird fact about me is i always [2032.0] Jack: thought like soldering was really cool but i was really awful at it and i for for an art project i [2039.04] Jack: had one of those like robots that like walked around with d-cell batteries and it blew smoke [2044.64] Jack: out of its mouth you know like the little like uh nichron wire with the oil the mineral oil [2050.88] Jack: cotton wall and i was like man it would be so much better if it had laser eyes so i bought two laser [2058.32] Jack: pens and what blinded everyone this is health and safety time and fitted it inside the eyes [2067.6] Jack: of the robot and i could never get the whole i couldn't get it like my soldering was so bad i [2074.0] Tony: couldn't i couldn't hook it up to the battery and then you would have got it right and i couldn't [2079.6] AndyRC: get it to flap when it blew the smoke i want to bring things back on topic a little bit because [2090.0] AndyRC: i what i watched the stream simon that you did with the caa at the nac show i think it wasn't [2098.56] AndyRC: the day i was there and um so uh like like things like this this 16 pound 50 thing back then wasn't a [2108.64] AndyRC: thing and basically what the message that i got from that is that this um the caa at the time [2116.88] AndyRC: just wanted a online theory test that was going to be very easy they they wanted it to be like [2124.16] AndyRC: just basic questions because if you had to answer 200 questions they knew that people wouldn't do it [2130.88] AndyRC: so that was their idea just ten very similar to the questionnaire that comes up now when you get a [2136.96] AndyRC: dji you know if you if you skip it five times it won't let you fly it or whatever so that's [2142.4] AndyRC: something dji brought in but clearly there've been some changes since that uh seminar and now [2149.92] AndyRC: this 16 pound 50 thing we had the bmfa on last week they're trying to fight to sort of um [2159.12] AndyRC: have that 16 pound 50 they're trying to i believe they're trying to act as an operator so that if [2166.56] AndyRC: you're a bmfa member then you won't have to pay the 16 pound 50 feet have you got any information [2173.28] AndyRC: about what's going on because it all just seems like we've got no idea what's going on and it's [2179.12] Simon Newton: so close to november now as well yeah yeah no okay so so first of all i kind of any regulator [2187.68] Simon Newton: is obviously going to be in any industry is stuck between a rock and a hard place because you're [2192.08] Simon Newton: you're not loved by anyone um and for the ca's point of view the you know obviously it was a [2196.88] Simon Newton: political decision to have compulsory registration of drones and the government there was a [2202.08] Simon Newton: consultation on the 18th which is why i must admit i'm slightly surprised at organizations [2208.4] Simon Newton: like the bmfa being suddenly almost taken aback that this was happening because it was always [2213.6] Simon Newton: happening so it must only be the price thing which i think is probably the the smallest part of the [2220.16] Simon Newton: concern concerned about a registration system which was announced and consulted on a while [2226.48] Simon Newton: back and has now been put in law and is going to happen then maybe 18 months ago would have been [2231.28] Simon Newton: the time anyway um so the government said this is going to have to happen um as the regulator the [2238.16] Simon Newton: civil aviation authority and i didn't i didn't know this until i started talking to them very [2242.72] Simon Newton: bizarre in the uk so they are a they're a pseudo governmental organization the fact that they've [2248.4] Simon Newton: got to do what the government says but they've also got to cover all their own costs that's why [2251.68] Simon Newton: if you want a commercial drone operator's permit or you want to start an airline they will charge [2256.48] Simon Newton: you x million pounds because they've got to cover their own costs they cannot rely on any government [2261.6] Simon Newton: money they've got it it's called the user pays that's the principle so having the government [2266.4] Simon Newton: having said right we want a drone registration system we wanted to have these three areas [2271.36] Simon Newton: you now need to run it and you need to cover the costs and so what they've done is they and they've [2277.04] Simon Newton: been quite open with this because i don't know if you saw the other week i did an interview with [2281.44] Simon Newton: the deputy director of the cia and asked him some of the questions that people had asked on the [2285.84] Simon Newton: channel and one of them was well where does this 1650 come from and to be honest they don't know [2293.36] Simon Newton: how many drone users there are in the uk so what they've done is they've taken the data from [2300.32] Simon Newton: canada and america and ireland and they've just extrapolated it out onto a per capita basis so [2307.28] Simon Newton: they've said the number of people that registered with the fba this is the per head of population [2312.16] Simon Newton: this is the population of the uk so we reckon if this number is right it should cost 1650 [2319.52] Simon Newton: per person if we're wrong and it's more than that it will be less if we're wrong and it's [2323.52] Simon Newton: less than that it'll be more so that that is where the 1650 comes from and the consultation [2329.44] Simon Newton: on the price isn't we're consulting on where the drone registration should happen that's a done deal [2334.8] Simon Newton: the consultation is do you have a better way of allowing us to fix the price so it's most [2340.88] Simon Newton: appropriate for the drone and unmanned systems operators in the uk and and do you like approve [2348.64] AndyRC: of this fee as well because i'm kind of torn like like jack's completely against it but then [2357.12] Jack: jack's against the registration i think the problem with that sorry to cut you off jack just [2361.92] Jack: because i didn't see the ca interview you did simon but i think one of the issues i had with the [2367.28] Jack: the findings of the costings was what is this computer system that's going to cost this many [2372.48] Jack: millions and why do they have to have upgrades for millions it's like there's infrastructure [2377.92] Jack: already that exists this is like most people sort of looked at it and said this is a week's [2381.84] Jack: work for a contractor to set up a system like this no one could really figure out why is there's such [2387.44] Simon Newton: a price behind it all yeah so so and that's one of the questions i've put to them because it is key [2392.4] Simon Newton: you know some people have said well i could knock this up on a on an excel spreadsheet and run it [2396.48] Simon Newton: for you and i'll take half the money give me half a million quid and i'll run it on my laptop so one [2401.28] Simon Newton: of yeah i think i think bruce said that actually yeah i'd be interested to see if we could put it [2406.24] Simon Newton: out to fiverr as if someone could come up with that for us yeah yeah yeah somebody in the far east [2410.72] Simon Newton: will probably do that but one of the things that they've got to do uh which i kind of understand [2416.24] Simon Newton: is it's also linked into the same database that they've got to when you register they need to [2421.84] Simon Newton: they need to confirm your identity otherwise of course you could i could i could register as you [2427.44] Simon Newton: so there's an identity verification part of it which is the same identity verification [2434.8] Simon Newton: system they use for driving licenses and passports so that's an element that isn't just [2439.68] Simon Newton: as simple as oh yeah give us your name and address there will there'll be some back office stuff there [2443.76] AndyRC: you go curry can see curry kitten's idea see jack said that in november when this comes in [2450.56] AndyRC: if he has to pay 16 pound 50 he'll quit and curry kitten said well i know your name and address [2456.56] AndyRC: your mother's maiden name whatever i will i'll register for you so one of us is over at jack's [2462.4] Jack: place often and after nikki's passport for a couple of days it's not a problem i nicked his um [2470.4] Tony: and i've got pictures of that uh for 10 pounds i'll send you a photographic evidence of what [2477.6] Simon Newton: looked like five years ago it's worth the tenner yeah quickly register put the number on it fly [2483.28] Simon Newton: into parkhurst prison and um sit back and wait for the SWAT team to arrive at his house it'll [2488.0] Jack: be perfect so you're right my objection is the list that the sticking you on a christmas list [2494.8] AndyRC: for the cops to work their way down you see jack signing off the list as it is that's that's what [2500.0] Simon Newton: is worried if i'm if i'm going to be honest if i'm going to be honest i've got a couple of other [2504.48] Simon Newton: hobbies and and and if i think about what i spend on those so i'm looking over a bit of this room [2509.92] Simon Newton: which has got a few bits a few analog synthesizers stuck in it yes and if i i mentioned this last [2518.72] AndyRC: week about other hobbies having fees but anyways and okay i don't have to pay anybody a registration [2525.12] Simon Newton: fee or anything but 16 pound 50 is a drop in the fucking ocean for that um and like there's a [2531.12] Simon Newton: couple of guitars hanging on the wall and jesus don't get me started on that and you know we all [2536.08] Simon Newton: suffer from my thing no matter what hobby you get there's there's gas and their gear acquisition [2540.72] Simon Newton: syndrome where somebody puts a cool video a trailer on youtube you know you know it in this [2546.0] Simon Newton: hobby it's the dgi fanboys dgi can drop a new product trailer for anything it could be a bloody [2552.64] Simon Newton: backpack and there'll be a certain percentage who will go out and bloody pre-order it without even [2558.24] Simon Newton: seeing it because not a backpack like this that cost me 70 quid just earlier in the chat we had [2566.0] Jack: a link to a pair of free sky sunglasses would you believe well how about this or fly sky what [2573.28] Simon Newton: should be wearing my dji i've got a lovely dji one christmas set just out of the blue sent me a um [2578.8] Simon Newton: sent me a pen which was but they also sent me a lovely dji embroidered very subtle polo shirt [2586.4] Simon Newton: which actually is one of the few polo shirts i wear and i delight on wearing it uh whenever i'm [2591.04] Simon Newton: gonna go and see any other manufacturers i took it to unique ones which is quite funny i've got [2595.68] Tony: that they didn't like that 20 dji bags if anyone wants them you know the little rucksack things [2602.24] AndyRC: in white with dji written on them here's another one that i got because it's pretty yeah so so in [2613.84] AndyRC: come on jack you you are the worst for that you can there are way worse ones that that you've got [2620.72] Jack: a handbag it's true and he's got so many bags that when torval asked if anybody else would [2626.48] Jack: want to review a bag and i said andy did you want to get a bag from you said i've got no more space [2631.36] Simon Newton: for bags it's true i haven't got any space for bags so i think on to to come back to the point [2640.08] Simon Newton: 16 pound 50 if look my i'm not dying is it really if you're flying rc anything what can you buy [2650.24] Tony: for 16 pound 50 props props i can't even buy one from it might cover one prop for me you could buy [2660.96] AndyRC: yourself a nice firework on this show that's about it there's your 16 pound 50 coins [2667.76] Jack: no one's no one's donated 16 pound 50 and the other thing is i guarantee you when if it all [2677.12] Simon Newton: goes through it turns out to be 16 50 somebody retailer or manufacturer will turn around and [2682.48] Simon Newton: we'll we'll we'll we'll drop the price of a new whatever by 16 pound 50 and say we'll pay your [2687.84] Jack: registration fee for you know what i mean but i think philosophy and like jack was saying it's [2692.88] Jack: not about the money it's about you're now on a list where people or the police moment just say [2698.0] Jack: okay we've we've had a drone sighting that's the worst who's registered in the area and of course [2702.4] Jack: if they go to jack's house and start opening his drawers he's going to get arrested for all sorts [2706.56] Tony: oh no imagine if they open that special drawer i tell you what i've had in my house i've had [2716.56] AndyRC: brudders i tell you what i would pay double 16 pound 50 to see what's in jack's drawers [2729.68] AndyRC: i think also regardless of the the whole you being on a list or whatever i think that's a daft [2737.04] AndyRC: argument because if you drive a car you're on a list anyways it's the principle isn't it [2742.16] AndyRC: we've for 50 years for 100 in fact the bmfa told us last year in 2022 it's a hundred years [2750.88] AndyRC: of the bmfa so that's a long ass time to all of a sudden have to pay 16 pound 50 it's the principle [2758.08] AndyRC: it's not just being on some kind of you know it's your own list you know it's it's more it's more [2763.12] Simon Newton: about the principle of it i agree and i but i look at it there's a couple of other ways that i look [2767.68] Simon Newton: at it so from the bmfa point of view what was really interesting last week talking to this this [2772.24] Simon Newton: old guy are the back of the caa stand was there what they call the drone code which as we know is [2777.36] Simon Newton: just a simple infographic about the key parts of the air navigation order 400 feet 50 meters blah [2782.88] Simon Newton: blah blah nice nice big city what was interesting to me was this this this old guy the chairman of [2788.88] Simon Newton: his local fixed wing club didn't actually know half of the rules in the air navigation order [2793.52] Simon Newton: that been there since 1986 because as he said he doesn't really need to because they don't bother [2798.16] Simon Newton: anyone they're far away from everybody he goes around in a circle he never goes beyond line of [2802.64] Simon Newton: cycles he crash etc etc so he didn't actually know half the rules in the air navigation order [2807.76] Simon Newton: which surprises me because his initial argument was about well i've done my a test and my b test [2812.24] Simon Newton: and i've been flying for years and i'm very safe and da da da but actually he didn't know what the [2816.32] Simon Newton: law was now i know some things have changed but that was point one i thought that was interesting [2821.6] Simon Newton: but point two um i have found occasions in the past where where um having something that shows [2830.0] Simon Newton: you have jumped through a couple of hoops to prove you know what you're talking about has got me into [2836.91] Simon Newton: places where i wouldn't be able to fly my local council for example i wanted to get up and do some [2841.47] Simon Newton: really nice shots in winter from the local park now i looked at it it i could i could do it legally [2848.67] Simon Newton: but they own the park as a lot of parks are and i happen to write to them and say look i'm a member [2852.83] Simon Newton: of fpvuk here's my third party insurance i do this i do that i'm quite responsible could i please [2858.75] Simon Newton: have permission to do this i'm going to do it and during the working day the school's kids aren't [2862.43] Simon Newton: going to be in it i'm going to take these precautions da da da and they went that sounds [2865.95] Simon Newton: brilliant yes you can and by the way if you get any good pics could we have them for the town [2869.15] Simon Newton: website or whatever and i said brilliant and i've spoken to raf benson about it and i think the fact [2873.95] Simon Newton: that you've got something if if you do if you are flying and you're doing it legally and you're [2879.07] Simon Newton: absolutely fine you've got the landowner's permission all out and plot rocks up because somebody who [2883.23] Simon Newton: doesn't know may this down the road there's a bloody drone peeking into my windows and looking [2888.11] Simon Newton: at me naked if you can actually just whip out your registered pilot number and the fact that [2893.23] Simon Newton: you're insured and you know what you're talking about and you can talk confidently about why it's [2896.99] Simon Newton: legal to be there then then then the poor old pc who doesn't know the air navigation order from his [2903.39] Simon Newton: is going to go well you sound like you're doing what you're talking about sir i'm going to move on [2907.15] Simon Newton: and you're not going to get hassled you're not going to get hassled and actually it might be a [2912.11] Simon Newton: way of us all coming together and going do you know what we've all passed a competency test [2917.15] Simon Newton: loads of us have insurance even though we don't need to by law um we know what's what we don't [2922.19] Simon Newton: turn around on private land so actually local council who said we can't now use that bit of land [2927.47] Simon Newton: um would you mind letting us because you know we're the good guys you might find it opens up [2933.55] Simon Newton: a few more places to fly because of the knowledge he did with uh he didn't with him [2940.83] AndyRC: well tony's got a better method tony would you like to explain [2944.75] AndyRC: how you can very quickly get into a location that you normally wouldn't i'm thinking about a farmer [2952.03] AndyRC: and uh and polo and nifty i'll i'll translate that tony says here's 50 quid can we fly here and [2964.91] Simon Newton: everybody says yes all i'm saying is speaking to a couple of local people who run hot air balloon [2971.71] Simon Newton: flights they always carry two bottles of whiskey in the basket yes although balloons are allowed [2977.15] Simon Newton: you know that the law says they've got to come down where they come down obviously if you've [2980.51] Simon Newton: come down through somebody's summer crop and you've dented it a bit and then you've got to get your [2984.19] Simon Newton: recovery truck in everything else i'll tell you what no they've never had a problem giving a big [2988.67] Simon Newton: bottle of whiskey to the farmer and said ah do you know what boys you know you don't it's not like [2992.99] Simon Newton: you do it every week if you go and annoy the same person week in week out they're going to tell you [2997.79] AndyRC: to i yeah that is correct yeah i won i think i asked the bmfa last week about this because i [3005.23] AndyRC: wasn't sure but uh how do i i'm not i'm not sure if you know the answer um but how do balloon [3012.51] AndyRC: flights because clearly they go low they go high and do they have to have a no-tam or do they come [3021.15] AndyRC: under some different law or something same law so they can't go into controlled airspace without [3026.83] Simon Newton: contacting the uh relevant authority um a lot of them do carry radio now um and uh and so [3035.63] Simon Newton: technically if they're approaching a bit of controlled airspace because the wind has blown [3038.91] Simon Newton: them in that direction they might answer if the if atc says no sorry mate you can't come through [3044.03] Simon Newton: then they will have to land early or they'll have to change their height to get different [3047.63] Simon Newton: winds it's all about winds at different heights well i was just that it was the height thing that [3052.11] AndyRC: i was mainly because when we had the caa on here they they said oh we're not concerned about [3059.55] AndyRC: uh jet airliners you know and you see all these videos the phantom phantom threes being blasted [3066.03] AndyRC: into wings but the caa came on here that the drone spokesperson for the caa came on it let's [3073.15] AndyRC: run out and say yeah we've gone with him yeah he said we don't care we're not bothered about [3080.59] AndyRC: what happens to a jet because they are way above the height and speed you know that would [3088.67] AndyRC: ever be bothered about it was more about microlights and stuff like hot air balloons and so that's why [3094.83] AndyRC: i asked that question because hot air balloons you know can are they obviously they um they have to [3102.27] AndyRC: land at a certain point they rely on really calm weather um so they must have some sort of waiver [3108.27] AndyRC: to fly below 500 feet i'm guessing yeah yeah yeah because they're not powered aircraft because [3114.11] Simon Newton: effectively the 500 foot rule is ostensibly for things that that can't glide i mean if you're [3119.47] Simon Newton: only 500 foot and you've got a like homing piston engine in the front that throws all its conrods [3124.83] Simon Newton: um you know even the most modern aircraft that's a fixed wing glides relatively speaking like a [3131.07] Simon Newton: brick whereas a balloon as long as you don't run out of gas you've got a relatively low uh what's [3137.87] Simon Newton: the technical word there's a low energy kind of component to it because you're coming with the [3142.59] Simon Newton: wind and so but there's also something called rules of the air um which is a bit like on on [3148.51] Simon Newton: the ocean you know like steam gives way to sail or something yeah yeah balloons basically everybody [3155.15] Simon Newton: has to avoid balloons then gliders is the next one up then it's anything with an engine so wow [3161.87] AndyRC: there's like a little food chain yeah i'm just all i'm thinking here now is right fpv balloons [3168.91] Simon Newton: no restrictions no laws somebody clever at ducksford said if i build a blimp and make it [3175.87] Simon Newton: neutrally buoyant it could be like 80 foot long but as long as when i put it on the scales it [3180.83] Simon Newton: weighs less than 250 grams well you know i said sounds good to me but one thing i did think was [3188.91] Simon Newton: that the government's probably got slightly more lawyers than you so make sure of your your science [3193.39] Simon Newton: but yeah ostensibly 250 grams i mean that's the all up weight for flying so yeah if you make [3198.59] Simon Newton: something that's not including fuel apparently um no and i did speak to the cia about that [3204.91] Simon Newton: and and they said right in this is good i get this so in aviation um the all up weight [3213.47] Simon Newton: is inclusive uh is normally meant as an empty fuel tank yeah yeah in in if you're flying electric [3221.47] Simon Newton: power the battery is a fuel tank so basically you need to put the battery on empty weigh it [3226.11] Tony: then charge the battery up it's not that there's you can it's not fair what Tony's trying to say [3233.95] Simon Newton: is he equals empty squared it's not fair though because about 240 gram quad and then put a massive [3241.31] Simon Newton: four s months the battery on the proper and that's because you know because it's got to be yeah the [3245.47] Simon Newton: battery is seen as the fuel tank so of course they weigh the same empty as they do full so that [3249.95] AndyRC: that's that's how that works do they so what we need is nitro quad cup no what you should do is [3255.95] Jack: just like have the batteries just the wrapper and take the cells out pull that bit out and like [3260.67] Simon Newton: yeah that's that's the fuel thing i just love the uh cells back in now do it now jack let's test this [3266.03] Simon Newton: go do it now give it a good yank they do actually weigh more charge how much more is that true is [3273.55] Tony: that true Tony it's like true it does like true or it is true it is true [3284.51] Simon Newton: minimal minimal stuff it's going to be like nano nano grams register it [3289.47] Tony: um let's join out was recommended by joshua barber on his live stream this week [3297.39] AndyRC: oh awesome yeah what hey josh loves us guys i went on josh's live stream [3305.63] AndyRC: and uh yeah everybody went crazy man and they were like get josh on on aldio come on yeah so [3311.55] Tony: just allowed on whenever he wants yeah we've had him on uh probably four or five times down but [3316.99] AndyRC: yeah come on whenever i i hope for the birthday sesh i reckon this this whole 250 gram thing [3324.43] AndyRC: is a bit daft as well and doesn't make sense i don't think uh the reason i say that and this is [3332.27] AndyRC: i'm i'm gonna plug a video that's going to be coming out now coming out soon by me i've got [3338.67] AndyRC: a model here right it's a it's a three inch model it it weighs 250 grams on the nose [3348.27] AndyRC: it's very success lipo with with with a success lipo right it does 112 mile per hour testing [3359.07] Tony: so that could that could kill you yes i could go into a plane i would rather [3364.59] Jack: tapping a knife to it would make make it kill you either i think i try to help you'd have to [3370.75] AndyRC: register it i'd rather a uh you know maybe kilogram quadcopter tapping me on the head [3378.03] AndyRC: than this hitting me at 100 miles per hour so yeah but they don't they don't do the weight limit [3384.83] Jack: based on people they do it based on could this take down an aircraft don't they because it's [3390.35] Jack: like how much kinetic energy do you need to take down an aircraft you look at the mass of [3394.27] Simon Newton: the model and and you still need to not fly closer than the law states to people or objects [3400.59] Simon Newton: not under your control yeah that's that's true in gram drones so that's true however i do think [3408.67] Simon Newton: there's got to be a cutoff otherwise you know you're gonna where do you stop it i mean there's [3412.51] Simon Newton: got to be an arbitrary limit it seems to me that that whether it's a conspiracy everyone around the [3417.39] Simon Newton: world seems to be zoning almost 250 gram is that because they've i don't know how is that because [3423.63] Simon Newton: they've looked at the average sort of toy drone weight and but i mean things like the para i i was [3429.47] Simon Newton: i was gobsmacked how close the para anaphy as an off the shelf little you know 4k camera drone got [3435.79] Simon Newton: to 250 stock before they even knew it was like it's 312 grams and that's got like 25 30 minute [3442.43] Simon Newton: flight time and can fly you know it's mavic type type performance so i'm not sure it will be too [3449.47] Simon Newton: long if if we get improvements in in battery performance before you'll get very capable [3455.39] AndyRC: oh yeah well i'm i'm all about i'm all about the three inch three inches faster than five inch [3462.43] AndyRC: it stops faster it goes quicker it's got a faster top speed and you wouldn't have to register this [3469.71] AndyRC: guy uh video coming out your three inch next weekend yeah well you've seen plenty of my five [3475.63] AndyRC: inch tone so i'll show you what he said but but as i've gotten older three inches now yeah [3486.03] Jack: everything gets smaller and i can only manage like two and a half inch so [3491.23] AndyRC: two and a half inch can still get the job done okay this does this will do 60 [3498.19] Tony: it won't make such a mess of anything uh i'm just going to read out something uh south with [3504.35] Tony: southwest kitty says this is one of the best places to hang out everyone here is awesome [3512.03] AndyRC: thank you southwest kitty i heard i heard that the late show from road to riot was [3517.23] Tony: was the best place have you seen that have you guys saw the skedoosh one yeah yeah i did watch it [3523.47] Jack: it's good isn't it it's a good idea actually yeah booboo says brighten till i fly my friend tony is [3530.35] Tony: my wife who's been watching the show too long that guy sundry yeah i was i was surprised tone [3543.39] AndyRC: you showed that uh stage and you were vlog didn't you you went over i was surprised they didn't do [3549.23] AndyRC: you that would have been an amazing night that would have gone you'd have got out and you got [3556.91] AndyRC: right the earth is flat i'm vegan you're idiots karen everything's a hologram we're in the matrix [3565.47] Tony: that would have been a great sorry i'm going back there in october we you know could happen [3573.47] Simon Newton: that'd be cool so i can i just um bring us back to the topic that we had because i've [3578.03] Simon Newton: just remember two things um one one of the things i think anybody who has an organization [3586.19] Simon Newton: or a club needs to maybe look into and this is not any inside information it's just something [3591.71] Simon Newton: that i've thought of obviously you've got the two sides of registration the pilot is free you do [3596.99] Simon Newton: your competency test it's no money the the the operator is the one with the charge and you can [3601.79] Simon Newton: be an operator with 50 drones it's just one charge anyone who's got a club or an organization if you [3606.59] Simon Newton: look into somehow that if members when they join you and pay their membership fee sign over ownership [3612.75] Simon Newton: of their drone then in theory i don't see i again go and see a lawyer i don't see in theory why [3621.31] Simon Newton: as a club you couldn't be the the the operator of all of your members things and basically you [3629.39] Simon Newton: just divvy up the 1650 by now the downside is if someone in the club is a bit of a you might [3636.03] Simon Newton: always there's always the and that's where it's a problem you might also find that your insurance [3641.39] Simon Newton: company doesn't like that but it's certainly an option for if not maybe traditional clubs but [3646.75] Simon Newton: loose groups of people who have between the many drones i don't know maybe some sort of fpv [3653.87] Simon Newton: fraternity of maybe looking at at that if you but you've probably got to have an element of trust [3659.63] Simon Newton: so that's point point one that's something i think that could be looked at and i think the bmfa is [3664.19] Simon Newton: looking at doing that well we had them on last week and they pretty much guaranteed that if the [3669.23] AndyRC: 1650 was the price they would do that i brought up the question though if you're the operator [3676.83] AndyRC: then we could if if we put your registration number on the side of our copter all it's going [3683.55] AndyRC: to come up with when the police the police find it it's just going to bring up the bmfa so maybe [3689.71] AndyRC: they'll have to come up with a different system of identifying individual you will have your pilot [3696.51] Simon Newton: number see if you're if you're so there's a two there's a separate registration so if you're an [3700.75] Simon Newton: operator you have to put the operator number on the drone but as a pilot who doesn't own any drones [3704.99] Simon Newton: you have to do a pilot competency and then you get a pilot number and a little presumably a little [3710.11] Simon Newton: something you can print out and uh and hand over to show that you are allowed to fly drones so [3717.07] Simon Newton: there's that that side the other thing as well is that everyone's got to remember is the 16 pound [3722.35] Simon Newton: 50 is based on the caa's best estimate of how many drone operators there will be if it turns [3728.03] Simon Newton: out that everybody joins the bmfa and therefore there's only two drone operators in the country [3733.55] Simon Newton: whatever the one and a half million quid will have to be divided by two and your next renewal [3738.11] Simon Newton: on registration fee might be 750 grand so the system has got to pay its own way and if more [3746.03] Simon Newton: people register they'll drop the price if fewer they'll have to up it that's why they're trying [3750.91] Simon Newton: to get an accurate number to make it a sensible thing because i don't think that number's accurate [3759.55] AndyRC: just from just from the number of people we've we've got a local group here and i can count [3767.23] AndyRC: on my fingers how many people are flying fpv in a city that has a million people so if they if [3775.07] AndyRC: they've like taken figures from canada and america which that's just just that's just not [3782.27] Simon Newton: the right number it's also anybody who's bought a phantom a mavic uh an anaphy uh any of the toy [3789.63] AndyRC: drones from china that happens to be more than 200 yeah the people that aren't going to be aware [3794.59] Simon Newton: that they need to register now yeah that is the other part of it the outreach thing and that's [3799.31] Simon Newton: one thing i was really happy to to join with the caa and i was do you know what i was gobsmacked [3804.27] Simon Newton: last weekend the number of kids and people queuing up to have a little just little bloody 15 quid [3808.99] Simon Newton: pocket drones from amazon or whatever the number of people who i asked have you ever flown a drone [3814.35] Simon Newton: thinking most of them or at least half maybe would say oh yeah you know i had a little girl a toy one [3819.39] Simon Newton: less than 10 percent had ever touched one yeah ever touched one and loads of them were really [3825.95] Simon Newton: they were fascinated by them loads and were asking can i buy ones that no they're just [3830.83] Simon Newton: but next time i must bring a container load um and there is that fascination with them [3836.51] Simon Newton: um and and all of the non-drone people i spoke to were actually i thought i thought we'd get like [3843.39] Simon Newton: full of about gatwick and you know actually if you weren't if you weren't caught up in gatwick [3848.91] Simon Newton: if you if you weren't affected by it most of the people understood that drones aren't the problem [3854.35] Simon Newton: it's some of the that fly them that are do you think do you think that to me they wasn't an [3859.79] Simon Newton: anti you know public the public in general don't seem to be generally anti-drone it just they do [3866.11] AndyRC: no they're definitely not they're definitely not but do you think this 16 pound 50 figure [3873.47] AndyRC: would have would have happened if gatwick hadn't have happened yeah it was already in thing it was [3878.91] Simon Newton: already in train the 1650 is purely a a math math isn't it just to pay back the 2.9 million they've [3886.43] Simon Newton: spent it's literally this is how much it's going to cost to put it in place and run it this is the [3890.99] Simon Newton: number we think it might register divide it by everybody so it covers the cost it's going to be [3896.19] Simon Newton: barging for i know a lot of people going oh bloody somebody's making money and i'm sorry but it's [3901.71] Simon Newton: they're already in a deficit it's the cia and the government no one is lining their pockets on this [3906.27] Simon Newton: one so that's a that's a false argument but my concern is they they don't have any better [3913.15] Simon Newton: methodology of working out the price than literally using other places that have done it and now i [3918.91] Simon Newton: get the feeling that our demographic is a bit different to that in america and island so we [3923.79] Simon Newton: might all find that the first year it's 16 pound 50 but we might also find that the second year [3928.91] Simon Newton: that goes up and then you see a six under 20 quid a year um i think you know okay it's like [3936.51] Simon Newton: anything else i think eventually people will just get used to it and it just becomes what it is i [3940.67] Simon Newton: think if you start pushing it 30 40 50 quid then you're going to get lots of people just going i'm [3949.07] Simon Newton: not going to register and and in all honesty bearing in mind it's the police that have got [3952.91] Simon Newton: to enforce this they've got quite a lot of other things on their on their plate i'm not sure and [3957.63] AndyRC: there's not many of them at the moment anyway that's my that's my biggest annoyance with all [3962.75] AndyRC: this is that i can i i've flown and police cars have driven within 10 meters of me flying and [3971.87] AndyRC: they carry on and then when this thing comes into place i'm like are they are they are they gonna [3978.67] Tony: stop every time i'm flying and check man they ain't got enough time to do any of the regular [3983.79] Simon Newton: police stuff they ain't gonna worry about us it boils down to if you're not that um i don't [3990.91] Simon Newton: care where you are and what you're doing and what you're up to if you're not impacting anyone who's [3996.51] Simon Newton: not interested in what you're doing then no one's gonna no one's gonna complain it's gonna be [4001.47] Simon Newton: complaints that's gonna get it that's what's gonna happen so if you're flying in an area where [4007.07] Simon Newton: technically and legally you shouldn't be but you're doing it at sort of you know seven o'clock on a [4011.47] Simon Newton: sunday morning because you know you do then that's different than constantly going down and [4016.91] Simon Newton: flying in the park after the schools kick out day after day someone's gonna call the cops and say [4023.31] Simon Newton: there's this idiot with that bloody whirling blades of death thing near my kid's head so now [4029.39] Simon Newton: what might be a good thing is those of us that kind of understand that aren't doing that currently [4034.27] Simon Newton: it's the kind of idiots that are going out and buying something off the shelf and being a dick [4038.51] Simon Newton: with it that i hope actually people do report and they do get hammered because the child they [4043.39] Simon Newton: ain't gonna have registered anyway and even if they have you know if a if a if a copper spots [4049.23] Simon Newton: them doing it that's it they've they they bust the law they're going to be done it won't be long [4054.43] Tony: till you see coppers learn that it's going to be the phantoms and stuff um that they're going to [4059.55] Tony: go for anyway they're just going to see they're going to see fbb people with goggles on and just [4065.39] Tony: leave us alone and go right these guys know the rules they they're all good they're just going to [4070.75] Tony: find yeah they're not you know they're going to learn boxes at 9 000 feet 20 yeah exactly i'm [4078.91] AndyRC: actually i'm actually hoping that it's not going to i'm hoping that they don't bring out a phantom [4084.75] AndyRC: five because at the at the moment the phantom four is the the poster child for bad drones right [4093.31] AndyRC: but if they discontinue the phantom four i i think the phantom four [4097.47] AndyRC: is the most beautiful like i hate to use the word it's great to what he does [4103.95] AndyRC: it's the most beautiful drone that there is but at the moment it's the poster child [4108.91] AndyRC: for this is what a bad drone is so i hope they discontinue it then the mavic then becomes the [4116.27] AndyRC: post child and then i can fly my nice phantom four pro which which i love because it's it's i [4124.51] Tony: always turn they're good with what they do i don't knock them for that it's just on the other end it's [4130.19] Simon Newton: because you go to argos and buy one yeah and that's what that's the problem where i do any research [4135.79] Simon Newton: you've got to build something and put it together you will you will take the barrier to entry and [4140.35] Jack: that's the elitism of the old boys with they made out of balsa unless all your fingers have been [4145.87] Jack: stuck together you don't deserve to touch the sticks yeah anyway you need to turn up with white [4151.15] AndyRC: socks and sandals and you're in so so when you turn up at argos that's where the registration [4156.75] Jack: process may be so yeah take your fingerprints out of here put them on the leash go through one of [4164.35] AndyRC: the scanners have an app have an app so you know you know who are in your area yeah put a call [4171.87] Simon Newton: around them yeah i know we're about to call time but i found that number if you want it for the raf [4177.31] Jack: low flying oh yes please a good number yeah stick it stick it here so and i will put it in the [4185.55] Jack: description cool uh thank you guys you've been listening to let drone out uh thank you for all [4192.51] Jack: the donations support and especially to our patreons uh we might carry on this chat for a little [4199.23] Jack: bit more as a bonus chat on our patreon so if we were doing that has simon got the time [4206.19] Simon Newton: he might i don't know we might just hang out i don't know we're into my we're into my overtime [4211.15] Simon Newton: and it's this double time for me now mate yeah that invoice is getting very big we do it we do [4216.27] Tony: we can give you we can send you two sandwiches and another glass of wine we do a patreon podcast [4222.35] AndyRC: sometime well like once a month and yeah top up all right go set it up and we'll chill [4230.91] Jack: anyway so i think it's three dollars or more gets you over there you've been joined by [4236.67] AndyRC: andy arcy thank you everybody for listening to my nonsense i hope it was somehow useful in a way [4245.87] Simon Newton: uh we've also been joined by summer noon cheers everybody have a lovely evening or morning or [4251.79] Jack: whatever it is in internet land not on the kitchen table uh my little wifey tony bonjour [4260.35] Jack: and my mistress curry kitten goodbye mistress now yeah he's gone up in the world yeah and i'm [4271.23] Jack: bright till i fly and caretaker frank i hope you're feeling all right buddy thank you and good night [4277.07] Jack: say bye everyone bye everyone telemetry lost
