[124.53] Jack: Somewhere that possibly has worse weather than the UK.

[132.61] AndyRC: Scotland is part of the UK.
[134.93] AndyRC: No, they're not.
[135.57] Jack: They're not, they voted to remain.
[139.65] AndyRC: Yeah, so they're part of the UK.
[142.45] Jack: No, they've lined Adrian's Wall with explosives and they're going to blow it and float away.
[152.29] SPEAKER_03: Right, well, yeah, I invited Gav on because I want to know more about what I've been hearing
[160.37] SPEAKER_03: more about in the sort of race organisers chats that I lurk in, which is about a style
[171.81] SPEAKER_03: of doing the finals at the FPV races called Triple Finals, which has kind of been frowned
[183.41] SPEAKER_03: upon for many, many years, or however long it's been going, whatever.
[187.73] SPEAKER_03: But it sounds like it's been quite popular in Scotland for quite a while.
[194.29] SPEAKER_03: And now some of the English organisers have actually been to some of these events and
[200.29] SPEAKER_03: seen how it's run and gone.
[201.49] SPEAKER_03: Actually, that's quite good.
[203.09] SPEAKER_03: We might borrow that and use that.
[206.37] SPEAKER_03: So I thought it would be interesting to hear kind of a bit more about what that means,
[213.25] SPEAKER_03: because I don't really know.
[214.45] Tony: No, I just go into a bar and say, can I have a triple double and that's it.
[222.13] SPEAKER_03: So, Gav, could you explain for us idiots who don't know what it means?
[228.13] SPEAKER_03: What is a triple final?
[230.29] Gav (Scotland): Triple final.
[231.89] Gav (Scotland): So instead of just running a single race, winner takes all, we run three races.
[238.29] Gav (Scotland): Basically, you've got your different groups, see if your A's, your B's, your C's,
[243.01] Gav (Scotland): depending on whatever one qualifies.
[246.13] Gav (Scotland): And the top ones, typically your top 12 pilots will run three races each in their finals.
[254.37] Gav (Scotland): You get a couple of points for each where you come.
[257.33] Gav (Scotland): And then basically whoever ends up with the least amount of points
[262.05] Gav (Scotland): comes out on top at the end of it.
[264.37] Gav (Scotland): We found last year, we did a lot of single finals and sort of knockout races.
[271.17] Gav (Scotland): And someone could be totally on it all day and then get ran over in their final or video
[280.13] Gav (Scotland): problems or something could ruin that one race and they'd lose out.
[285.41] Gav (Scotland): So we thought, well, we'll give this triple finals a try and
[290.21] Gav (Scotland): bring in a bit of consistency rather than just that one race count in.
[295.49] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because the sort of the way that the national championships has been
[302.77] SPEAKER_03: been run up to now has been sort of a case of saying, okay, that the finals,
[308.13] SPEAKER_03: yeah, they're kind of a bit, you know, you could be lucky or unlucky and that can have
[312.61] SPEAKER_03: a massive impact on it.
[313.89] SPEAKER_03: So we're going to ignore the final results and we're going to do everything off the
[317.73] SPEAKER_03: qualifiers for the rankings to pick who goes in the championships up to now.
[323.81] SPEAKER_03: And then there's some suggestion that maybe using the triple finals,
[330.53] SPEAKER_03: maybe that kind of evens that out enough that maybe we could, you know,
[335.17] SPEAKER_03: do it off the final results from each event.
[337.81] SPEAKER_03: And that was a very contentious point that's been talked about a bit at the moment that I've seen.
[344.45] Gav (Scotland): Yeah, I think it was Matthew Evans had a good conversation backwards and forwards
[349.17] Gav (Scotland): when one of the BDRA pages, we do everything slightly different.
[356.29] Gav (Scotland): So we use the same sort of qualifying format, but instead of treating each qualifying run
[362.53] Gav (Scotland): as an actual race, it's more as a qualifying run, much like conventional motorsport.
[369.81] Gav (Scotland): So we use staggered stats.
[372.53] Gav (Scotland): Each pilot gets shittied out.
[374.05] Gav (Scotland): You go, so you're not, it's not head to head racing through the qualification runs.
[377.89] Gav (Scotland): It's literally P setting.
[381.81] Gav (Scotland): So we do that and you're typically we're getting five qualifying runs.
[389.33] Gav (Scotland): Faster pilots are obviously coming around and catching the slower pilots,
[393.73] Gav (Scotland): but typically you're flying in an open air to try and get your good laps in.
[400.85] Gav (Scotland): We were using the same format there as many lapses you can get in a safe time.
[405.73] Gav (Scotland): And yeah, we went from the sort of staggered starts qualifying to the heads up three times
[416.93] Gav (Scotland): finals to finish it off and take that sort of your rank to how fast you can go.
[423.09] Gav (Scotland): And then you're putting your triple finals to see who can actually race it out.
[427.89] SPEAKER_03: Hmm, because it's also the, I think I'm right in saying that the scoring as well is sort of
[436.93] SPEAKER_03: being borrowed from that same idea of that sort of the lower score gets you higher up the ranking.
[442.37] SPEAKER_03: That's also been taken on for the British championships as well, I think.
[448.21] Gav (Scotland): Yeah, we're pretty much just everyone's using the lifetime system.
[452.69] Gav (Scotland): So we're pretty much relying on that.
[455.17] Gav (Scotland): I think it's built in, you know, you can set up your triple mains.
[458.77] Gav (Scotland): You get first, you get a point, you get second, you get two points.
[461.81] Gav (Scotland): It's pretty simple.
[464.37] Gav (Scotland): And it's worked out.
[465.65] Gav (Scotland): We ran calendars, eight events.
[470.61] Gav (Scotland): Our total miracle, the weather only managed to cancel one,
[475.65] Gav (Scotland): which is a total miracle for up here, to be honest.
[478.93] Gav (Scotland): We got our seven races ran and it all worked out pretty well.
[485.09] Curry: So with that, sorry, Frank, with that system, I'm just wondering if it's mathematically
[489.89] Curry: possible for people to end up with the same number of points.
[492.53] Curry: And is there some sort of tiebreak system if that's the case?
[496.05] Gav (Scotland): It comes down, who's faster on an individual run?
[500.93] Gav (Scotland): I think it's from the finals.
[502.37] Gav (Scotland): I think it comes down to who's faster in the finals.
[506.37] Gav (Scotland): So it'll add together.
[507.49] Gav (Scotland): We're doing finals typically over three laps or work out who did the fastest run.
[513.01] Gav (Scotland): So if you had two people getting a first say, it'll work out who had the quicker first,
[519.49] Gav (Scotland): and obviously it awards it to them.
[523.09] Gav (Scotland): Cool.
[523.97] Tony: And do you guys use VTX timing, don't you?
[526.61] Gav (Scotland): Yeah, we use the VTX.
[529.97] Gav (Scotland): The races I organised with the Edinburgh group, we get access to the full-blown TBS timer,
[535.49] Gav (Scotland): the event timer, through our sponsorship where the cool toy shop.
[539.97] Gav (Scotland): The guys through in Glasgow have got the immersion one.
[543.33] Gav (Scotland): And they've been letting all the other clubs borrow their timer.
[546.37] Gav (Scotland): So I think some of the clubs have got the Delta V's.
[550.85] Gav (Scotland): We've got a Delta V kicking around somewhere as well.
[552.93] Gav (Scotland): And so it's all in the VTX timing.
[555.17] SPEAKER_03: This is a fun thing to watch as well.
[556.77] SPEAKER_03: Because that was, again, something where, you know,
[560.53] SPEAKER_03: discussion ads have been running events on the VTX timing.
[564.05] SPEAKER_03: Meanwhile, a lot of the, particularly the more Southern groups have been saying,
[571.33] SPEAKER_03: VTX timing is never going to be reliable enough.
[573.73] SPEAKER_03: It's never going to work.
[574.93] SPEAKER_03: It's always going to be in-lapse.
[577.25] SPEAKER_03: The transponders, it's going to have to be that way
[579.49] SPEAKER_03: because it's just never going to be reliable enough.
[582.53] SPEAKER_03: And then you lot all proved it worked.
[585.49] SPEAKER_03: And then everyone went, oh, we'll do that then.
[588.21] Tony: And it's so much easier for pilots because they ain't gone muck about with
[593.01] Tony: five volt out and three volt out here and all that lot.
[595.81] Tony: You can just turn up as long as you've got a good VTX.
[599.17] Tony: Do you have to have a certain VTX running, or?
[602.85] Gav (Scotland): We pretty much try and say to use, well, we say to use a CE marked VTX,
[610.21] Gav (Scotland): which basically means use a Unify or a Tramp, basically.
[615.25] Gav (Scotland): There's another couple that I can't remember off the top.
[617.49] Gav (Scotland): And there is another couple of VTXs that are quite good.
[621.17] Gav (Scotland): I think Matek do one that the timers pick up quite good.
[625.81] Gav (Scotland): We don't nail it on, but it's highly suggested you use a Unify or a Tramp.
[631.17] Tony: Don't turn up with a Chinese five quid VTX, which says 25 milliwatt and is never.
[639.41] Gav (Scotland): Yeah, you turn up with a cheap Chinese VTX and the timer doesn't pick you up.
[645.33] Gav (Scotland): Everyone's just going to laugh at you and you're going to get no sympathy from it on.
[648.29] Tony: So how do you control your bubble?
[654.77] Tony: Do you do one first and count everyone in, or how does it work?
[659.65] Gav (Scotland): Don't get, I'm not quite catching this, really.
[662.13] Tony: Do you do a practice and make sure everything works fine?
[669.97] Gav (Scotland): Yeah, so typically start the day off.
[674.37] Gav (Scotland): Well, going back, we've got a little bit of scrutiny around.
[677.33] Gav (Scotland): So some of the groups have got the immersion wand, so we'll wand everyone.
[685.17] Gav (Scotland): Obviously it can't pick up the channels and stuff,
[687.01] Gav (Scotland): but nine times at 10, the video problems we've found
[690.29] Gav (Scotland): is because someone's got a broken VTX or a broken antenna, sorry.
[694.85] Gav (Scotland): So usually we can identify that sign and they can go away and fix our things.
[700.05] Gav (Scotland): We'll run two practice rounds typically, unless the weather is mental
[703.57] Gav (Scotland): and we'll maybe run a third one.
[705.73] Gav (Scotland): And then five rounds of quality, and then five rounds.
[711.17] Tony: Cool, it sounds good.
[713.81] Tony: I mean, anything to not muck around with your rice court, it sounds good to me.
[719.89] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it seems like it's just a so much easier system for the pilots, for the organizers.
[726.53] SPEAKER_03: I mean, I remember, and I've seen so many events where you have like lone transponders and all
[733.73] SPEAKER_03: that kind of stuff and it's like, nah, never again.
[737.41] SPEAKER_03: God, I remember them days.
[743.33] SPEAKER_03: With your particular Scottish weather,
[746.77] SPEAKER_03: do you have to make any considerations with your tracks?
[749.33] SPEAKER_03: Do you have to make them particularly...
[751.89] SPEAKER_03: Indooring.
[752.53] SPEAKER_03: ...bigger gates or something?
[754.93] Gav (Scotland): No, not really.
[756.69] Gav (Scotland): So, no, typically you just, you throw up a field and you go with it.
[765.33] Gav (Scotland): The exception of that is I ran a race back in Easter at the local high school.
[773.73] Gav (Scotland): We've got access to an affiliate extract there and the wind was absolutely ridiculous.
[780.05] Gav (Scotland): So we've got these big rings that everybody hates
[784.29] Gav (Scotland): and the wind was catching you just as you were going through the rings
[788.13] Gav (Scotland): and it was pushing you off to the side.
[790.53] Gav (Scotland): So when we ran our second round, which was the last round of our overall series,
[795.65] Gav (Scotland): we kind of made sure that the rings were facing into the wind,
[798.69] Gav (Scotland): so you weren't getting crosswind out through it.
[802.21] Gav (Scotland): But you don't have to do too much.
[806.45] Gav (Scotland): Pretty much normal setup.
[808.37] AndyRC: Plus, you're acting like the temperature's a million miles different.
[814.29] AndyRC: I think Scotland gets about a two degree difference than the rest of the UK.
[821.09] AndyRC: It's just London is just like an oven because it's packed full of people who hate each other.
[827.73] AndyRC: And it's the hate that makes everything hot, I think.
[833.73] Tony: That's probably the best thing you've ever said on this library.
[837.97] AndyRC: I could say better things.
[840.29] AndyRC: I'm trying to behave tonight.
[844.61] SPEAKER_03: We've also got coming up the British Championships, which is coming up soon.
[850.69] SPEAKER_03: I can't remember how soon, actually.

[856.05] SPEAKER_03: 20th September, I think.
[859.57] SPEAKER_03: And there's, I think, is this the first year or is this the second year
[864.61] SPEAKER_03: where we've had particular places based on the regions?
[869.25] Gav (Scotland): I think it's the first year for regions.
[871.73] SPEAKER_03: I think so.
[872.45] SPEAKER_03: And so there's some particularly given up,
[878.05] SPEAKER_03: sort of set aside, especially for the Scottish League, I guess, right?
[884.13] Gav (Scotland): Yeah, I think in past years, I think last year we had a different organisation running the races
[891.65] Gav (Scotland): and the organisation, Alan organised things with the BDRA and got certain places.
[898.13] Gav (Scotland): We basically got all the Scottish groups together to form a little group.
[905.01] Gav (Scotland): And I think it came down with the regional series,
[907.17] Gav (Scotland): is if you could run a race that qualified as a regional race,
[912.29] Gav (Scotland): for every race you put on, you got a spot.
[917.33] Gav (Scotland): So we put on eight races.
[919.17] Gav (Scotland): We were hoping each one was going to get enough numbers to qualify.
[925.09] Gav (Scotland): We had two races up in Aberdeen and it was a bit of a trek
[928.29] Gav (Scotland): for everyone down in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
[930.29] Gav (Scotland): So we weren't 100% sure if those races were quite going to qualify as regional races,
[935.17] Gav (Scotland): but pulled it off, they got the numbers.
[938.69] Gav (Scotland): We ended up getting seven races to qualify as regional.
[942.69] Gav (Scotland): So I think we've managed to get the eight
[946.77] Gav (Scotland): because the last one might have been a BC as well, I can't quite remember.
[951.65] Tony: So you guys in Scotland, the British champs are hoping for rain and wind.
[957.97] Tony: Yeah, so it's like flying up back home.
[960.93] Tony: Yeah. That's what happened in Florida.
[964.05] Tony: The last time I flew a race was April in Florida.
[969.01] Tony: And everyone's back out of hell and then it clouded over and the wind got up
[975.73] Tony: and I took first base just because it felt like home.
[981.65] Tony: So you guys would probably benefit from cloudy thunder and rain.
[988.43] Tony: Not that it's like that at all times in Scotland.
[990.91] Tony: It does have nice days.
[993.31] Curry: Well, you say that, but where I used to work, we used to talk all the time to Greenook,
[998.67] Curry: which is somewhere up in Scotland.
[1000.19] Curry: And they had a saying about they could look out and there was apparently this island there.
[1004.43] Curry: And it was, if you can't see it, it's raining.

[2881.92] SPEAKER_03: because this is a new definition that I wasn't aware of,
[2884.4] SPEAKER_03: because I hadn't read every page of the A&O.

[2892.08] SPEAKER_03: There is a definition of a congested area,
[2895.2] SPEAKER_03: which is any area that is substantially used for industrial, commercial,

[2907.52] SPEAKER_03: But the CAA have said that it's kind of a bit more ambiguous than that,
[2916.88] SPEAKER_03: and it's intentionally so, and there's a lot of kind of fluff around it.
[2921.68] SPEAKER_03: But it basically means don't fly within 150 metres of the city,
[2931.2] SPEAKER_03: which kind of precludes any flying in cities.
[2936.72] SPEAKER_03: But they've also...
[2940.96] SPEAKER_03: From what I can tell...
[2941.68] Tony: Are you allowed to take off in the Queen's Park?

[2948.03] Tony: So most parks in the city of London are a no-go.
[2951.47] Curry: The congested area is an interesting thing as well,
[2953.71] Curry: because if any of you guys watched,
[2955.47] Curry: I used to do these meets called Mad Dogs from ages ago,
[2958.67] Curry: and it was in a cricket field in Oxfordshire,
[2962.91] Curry: just outside a very small village.
[2965.31] Curry: And we actually had a CAA guy look at the place,
[2969.15] Curry: and he defined that as a congested area,
[2971.79] Curry: despite the fact that it was more countryside than you could ever imagine.
[2975.47] Curry: That the ambiguity of what a congested area was always quite bad.
[2980.75] SPEAKER_03: And therefore is a congested area by the technical definition,
[2987.15] SPEAKER_03: but they've also said that it's kind of,
[2990.43] SPEAKER_03: I think they're very unlikely to actually care about that,
[2994.67] SPEAKER_03: unless you're actually causing some other trouble
[2997.15] SPEAKER_03: than they're trying to get you on something,
[2999.55] SPEAKER_03: is what they've kind of said reading between the lines.
[3003.15] SPEAKER_03: So it's really annoying, it's a bit stupid, but there we go.
[3007.63] SPEAKER_03: So there is that to be aware of.
[3010.99] SPEAKER_03: There's also the no-fly zones, obviously around airports,
[3016.03] SPEAKER_03: but there are other ones as well.
[3018.91] SPEAKER_03: So around Buckingham Palace there is one,
[3021.87] SPEAKER_03: around the MI5 building, all this kind of thing.
[3025.07] SPEAKER_03: There's extra little no-fly zones that you have to be aware of.

[3035.15] SPEAKER_03: is noflydrones.co.uk is what I use to get at least an idea.
[3044.35] SPEAKER_03: What I'm kind of disappointed about
[3047.15] SPEAKER_03: is that we don't have one single place
[3050.43] SPEAKER_03: where we can find out all this kind of stuff.
[3052.75] SPEAKER_03: Because if you go on the French equivalent of the CAA,
[3058.83] SPEAKER_03: they have a lovely map that down to the buildings
[3063.23] SPEAKER_03: and levels of villages and all these kind of things says,
[3066.51] SPEAKER_03: don't fly here, can fly here kind of thing.
[3070.35] SPEAKER_03: Which it would be kind of nice to have,
[3073.47] SPEAKER_03: and we don't have that in the UK.
[3075.39] SPEAKER_03: We just have kind of, here's someone who's put together a tool,
[3080.99] SPEAKER_03: they're not an official body or anything,
[3082.59] SPEAKER_03: it's just they've collected no terms,
[3084.83] SPEAKER_03: which are the notifications to airmen
[3086.59] SPEAKER_03: and general kind of different sources of information
[3089.39] SPEAKER_03: and collected it together and it's not official
[3091.71] SPEAKER_03: and other people can have their own things
[3093.15] SPEAKER_03: that were completely just made up.
[3097.71] SPEAKER_03: If you own a building somewhere,
[3099.39] SPEAKER_03: or even if you don't, if you just feel like,
[3101.31] SPEAKER_03: I want to have my contact details put on this map to say,
[3104.83] SPEAKER_03: if you want to fly here, contact me first,

[3154.75] SPEAKER_03: between these hours on these days.
[3157.23] SPEAKER_03: There are places like that,
[3158.35] SPEAKER_03: and I've flown at many of those,
[3160.51] SPEAKER_03: but they're not centrally recorded anywhere,
[3164.99] SPEAKER_03: you can't look them up,
[3165.87] SPEAKER_03: you just have to kind of stumble across them.

[3218.27] SPEAKER_03: then you shouldn't just hide them in a filing cabinet

[3383.15] AndyRC: but obviously the dog's chasing.
[3385.15] AndyRC: And the lady comes up, swearing her head off and saying,

[3397.79] AndyRC: And I said, she said, it's scaring my dog.
[3401.39] AndyRC: And obviously it's not scaring the dog, otherwise.

[3566.03] Curry: so she could retrieve her dog and then got all apathy with me
