Looking back at the innovation and changes in the hobby during 2010 - 2019

[0.0] Jack: Hello and welcome to Let's Drone Out. The best, well the only UK FPV podcast
[6.8] Jack: sponsored by the lovely people from our Patreon. Patreon.com forward slash Let's Drone Out.
[12.88] Jack: In particular we'd like to thank these guys. Art Faulkner. Mikey Dredd. Wacky Wes. David Powell.
[24.24] Jack: Thank you guys. You're the best. We can edit our podcast. Thank you.
[59.25] Lee: Hello and welcome to Let's Drone Out. Unbelievably we are starting on time.
[65.73] Lee: Missing a presenter but hopefully by the time I've done all the introductions
[69.73] Lee: and DRC who's expected will have turned up. Now for those of you that are eagle-eyed you'll have
[74.05] Lee: spotted that I'm not your usual presenter. I'm Lee Painless360. Unfortunately Jack can't make it
[80.77] Lee: tonight and he's asked me to be a guest host which is great because I've got a couple of things I
[85.65] Lee: want to talk to all these guys about anyway and I might as well do it on the show and then we can
[89.73] Lee: get some talk around it. So first of all let me introduce everybody on the podcast who was here on
[95.09] Lee: time. First of all we've got Andrew slash Frank. Good evening. We have NJ Tech. Hello people.
[104.37] Lee: Fantastic. We have Curry Kitten. Hello. And the impressible Tony star.
[111.17] Lee: Spongebob. And hopefully we'll have Andy R.C. So this is all new to me. I haven't used this
[119.89] Lee: system on LDO. Last time I was on LDO we had a whole different streaming gig so this whole thing
[125.57] Lee: where all the screens are on together is a bit overwhelming for me so bear with me. I'm very old
[130.53] Lee: but we can see all of your comments and things going down the right hand side. So if we talk
[136.37] Lee: about something that you're interested in and you want to know more about that or you have a
[140.69] Lee: particular question do pop a comment and we'll try and keep up with that stuff as we go through
[145.89] Lee: and kind of cover it as we talk. Now before we get into the cut and thrust of everything
[151.81] Lee: there is some legal stuff that we have to do so that nobody gets sued. So Curry could you do the
[157.49] Curry: honours? I will do. Although we're probably on safe ground because Andy's not here yet. Any of
[162.93] Curry: you is expressed by any guest in the show are personal and may not affect the views or the
[167.09] Curry: hosts of any participant of this show. Which is going along the bottom but gets truncated off the
[172.69] Curry: end for some reason. Yeah so I slightly edited it. Oh may not reflect the views of others that's
[180.69] Lee: the short version yeah. Yeah so if anyone says anything controversial it's not the show's fault
[188.13] Lee: basically. So thank you for doing that Curry that was awesome. So the reason that I was kind
[194.85] Lee: of excited when Jack talked to me about helming the show was I'd actually spent the last couple
[201.73] Lee: of weeks going through my YouTube channel and finding all kinds of things in there from the
[207.73] Lee: last decade all to do with the hobby. Sorry about the unsubscribe don't subscribe it'll be back to
[215.41] Lee: normal next week. And looking back there was an awful lot of stuff that I was finding there
[222.85] Lee: so things about multi-weave the early days of the hobby and looking through the videos and something
[228.45] Lee: like 13 1400 videos on the channel now it was really fascinating to watch how far we'd come.
[235.25] Lee: So one of the things I wanted to talk about with all you guys is what was your first experience
[240.85] Lee: of the hobby because I know what mine is and I can talk about it in all the rounds but we've
[246.69] Lee: seen such a fantastic explosion in technology. How did you guys get into all this UAV drone
[253.01] Frank: multi-rope to stuff? Frank do you want to kick us off? Yeah I'll just add Andy to the stream as well.
[260.83] AndyRC: Hello Andy I see. Hello I was here I've been here ages waiting for you to accept me I've
[267.79] AndyRC: been waiting backstage apparently but I tried using that excuse as well and I didn't buy it.
[275.71] Lee: I've been tired five minutes anyways good to see you. Fantastic well great to see you Andy thank you
[281.15] Frank: so Frank go for it. Yeah so I mean for on the FP like on the on the RC side I'd done that for
[291.23] Frank: ages and ages and ages and ages like small trials kind of thing first with like cars and then
[298.67] Frank: getting into the planes and then deciding planes crash from fall apart and they're
[302.27] Frank: fast too expensive and difficult to fix for someone so small. So I went ended up going into
[310.67] Frank: kites because I could afford kites and they're a lot cheaper to duct tape together and then it was
[318.35] Frank: with the FPV league.co.uk which is a Tom Greer's kind of organization trying to get some races
[328.99] Frank: together and it was the first event I'd seen and so when was that Andy? 2015 I think it must have
[340.83] Frank: been. Okay so you were using proper flight controllers. Yeah we had proper flight controllers
[350.43] Frank: the I mean well actually I'd had FPV on a car back in like 2005 but that was with like a
[363.47] Frank: 27 megahertz car with a 2.4 gigahertz security camera like the thing was huge that did that
[374.59] Frank: and it ran off like a pp3 9-volt battery and then went back to a like a VRX that you had
[382.59] Frank: to physically tune like there was a knob on it that you tuned to the right frequency
[387.15] Frank: and that had like a you know a composite cable that plugged into my family telly at the time
[396.67] Frank: and that was how I how I have my first FPV experience was driving that around the house
[401.95] Frank: and downstairs and things and that was good fun but then actual FPV something that flies all
[410.43] Frank: together was a FPV league event in East Grinstead at Radio C back from Radio C with a thing
[418.67] Frank: and yeah I was as yeah from the very off I started as a medsigo one and was there
[427.31] Frank: handed a high vis and told to marshal some races and this was one of the races where
[433.95] Tony: I mean saying racing is a bit of a strong tool. It was whoever can get round wasn't it?
[439.71] Frank: Yeah it was it was a challenge. Who can complete a lap and if they did then there was just a cheer
[445.79] Frank: from throughout the entire forest. It was cheering yeah. It was I think one person had
[454.27] Frank: brought the first set of dental props and you know the indestructible props because
[461.31] Frank: before that it was all the kind of fixed wing stuff that as soon as it saw relief it would just
[466.03] Frank: explode. There was Dominic Clifton there with his uh he was trying some autotune code.
[475.71] Frank: So this is clean flight days? This was still well it must have been very early clean flight days.
[484.35] Frank: And yeah he was trying this autotune and it was just terrifying everyone because it it was
[491.87] Frank: you know just like going mad and off into the corner and everything. Yeah autotune just tended
[496.59] Lee: to destroy everything. So 2015 was kind of your earliest. It was kind of early clean flight a
[503.47] Lee: flight controller and people were still excited about if you could complete one lap without the
[508.27] Frank: thing exploding into a million pieces. Yeah exactly and I remember that micro was defined
[513.95] Frank: because these were all mini quads because they were you know not 400 500 mil big beasts
[520.43] Frank: and then there was a micro quad that was at you know 150 mil or something like um I think it was
[526.83] Frank: the owl FPV or something like that that it was called but yeah that that was the micro when
[532.03] Frank: everyone was looking at like wow so small. I remember that much. So who can who can beat
[537.39] Lee: 2015 for their first multi-rotor experience? Probably me I think. Or NJ or Curry go on NJ
[546.91] Lee: thing is you came into the whole multi-rotor thing via the like me via helicopters didn't you?
[552.51] NJ: Yeah so I was I still am obsessed with rotary um I was from a very early age so I actually
[559.95] NJ: started flying helis around I think I must have been around 12 something like that um and it
[566.91] NJ: wasn't until a friend a buddy of mine who's a producer a film producer said to me have you ever
[574.43] NJ: stuck a I've got a couple of really nice cameras we hang a camera under under that thing and he
[580.19] NJ: produced his very expensive DSLR which made me incredibly nervous but we rigged something up and
[585.23] NJ: got it underneath the helicopter and flew it and of course even though this was a beautifully tuned
[589.87] NJ: very smooth running helicopter it still just shook the place to pieces so I was looking at
[596.27] NJ: alternative ways to to hang a camera or to lift a camera and then I see I saw that my multi-rotors
[605.47] NJ: were kind of gaining some traction and I guess the time I got into it was well I was one of the
[611.47] NJ: original backers of the of the cc3ds I've actually still got my one of the first run of the of batch
[619.07] NJ: one that came out of the cc3d and then obviously that's a flight controller you're very familiar
[624.51] NJ: with I know you did a an awful lot of work on tutorials for that back in the day but but that
[631.71] NJ: was that was a lot of pushing sliders around that did very little to the flight characteristics at
[636.11] NJ: either end um but but yeah so I guess it was mainly kind of the entry point was there at the time
[643.95] NJ: it was me um Boris B and a guy called Juzz 70 for anyone who remembers who that was and Juzz was
[652.11] NJ: the guy who kind of suddenly just went look what I can do if you stick a camera on the front of
[656.75] NJ: this thing and just completely blew my mind and that's what really got me focused on the FPV side
[664.35] NJ: of things and wanting to to well then I just fell in love with that and and sort of went from there
[669.87] Lee: so so well what about what time is this then and J what year roughly I'm trying to think uh
[678.67] NJ: 2013 maybe it was yeah yeah so around that time it was it was yeah I'd have to check the wiki I
[688.91] NJ: think on uh cc3d and see when that first that first run of uh boards was made but that that
[695.07] NJ: was where I initially got into it and and got bitten by the bug and I remember the other thing
[700.03] NJ: that really stands out in my head was at the time because my friend was saying you know once we
[705.15] NJ: actually got a multi-roader together although it wasn't incredibly stable it was still a million
[710.03] NJ: times better in terms of footage than being hung off a helicopter um when we actually
[716.51] NJ: sort of got the footage and we thought maybe we should look into this commercially
[720.27] NJ: back then there was a list of six people on the commercial register
[726.27] NJ: and I thought wow it could be number seven if you look at how many people are commercially
[730.19] NJ: registered now it's uh well I think it's over a thousand isn't it just in the UK it's just
[734.59] NJ: tons and tons of people but that's how far back we are anyway so so so Wayne I think you can
[740.91] Lee: probably beat 2014 into cc3d from our conversations cc3d luxury when I was
[751.07] Curry: no I tracked it back and I was trying to I was trying to find out the sort of ignition point
[756.11] Curry: to how I got to looking for and I think back in 2011 I got a Christmas present of a coaxial
[765.95] Curry: helicopter so I wouldn't say it was from a heli background because a coaxial helicopter
[769.95] Curry: with counter-rotating props is not a proper heli and it was an inside one and it was frightening
[774.99] Curry: and it smashed up a lot but I came up quite independently with the idea of like this would
[778.99] Curry: be cool to put a camera on it and when I started researching this I stumbled upon
[783.39] Curry: one of David Wintershell's videos on the tricopter one of the real early ones tricopter
[787.95] Curry: through the forest and when I looked at that it was about you buy these helicopter gyros
[794.27] Curry: and you have this bizarre mix on the radio and I didn't know what a helicopter gyro was
[799.23] Curry: or what a mix on a radio was or anything because my RC knowledge was was nothing at all but it
[804.75] Curry: just so happened that a few months later he released another video about using the original
[810.43] Curry: KK board and back then like David had built his own but they just started becoming commercially
[816.59] Curry: available cheap from Chinese vendors so back in February of 2012 I found David's excellent page
[825.87] Curry: where he said I built it out of this and these are all the parts and I just started buying them
[830.27] Curry: which included 10 by 10 Pinewood from B&Q that you saw and put together and cable ties and DT750
[840.51] Curry: motors and the KK and I had to borrow didn't have a radio I didn't know because typically if
[850.99] Curry: I don't know if you guys noticed this but if anybody sees you flying something they're like
[854.27] Curry: oh how much is one of those where'd you get it and you get everything with it you get the control
[858.51] Curry: and everything and you're like no and back then I thought everything went together and you know
[863.95] Curry: you buy it separately and you get this receiver thing and you plug it in so I eventually put this
[869.47] Curry: thing together and attempted to fly in my kitchen I don't know if you noticed the original tricopters
[875.79] Curry: they were like this big so that was probably a bad decision also I borrowed a radio from a friend
[880.43] Curry: which is like 40 megahertz or something I don't know where he got it from and I didn't know about
[884.59] Curry: channel maps or where to plug them in so I just plugged everything in and I generally tried to
[888.75] Curry: just move sticks until I could work out a response from something and aside from hitting myself in
[895.31] Curry: the face twice from like what's this button do it reverses the throttle yeah I eventually got a
[901.95] Curry: little hop and after that point it was a case of starting buying things for it so I was like buying
[908.99] Curry: FPV bits the goggles took me ages to get because I was getting everything from first person view in
[913.31] Curry: the UK and they were out of stuff but yeah I slowly built this thing together and I flew it
[918.75] Curry: line of sight for quite a long time several months and I remember back then I had an MX-5
[925.23] Curry: and I had to put the roof down to go to B&Q to buy pine wood in 3.8 meter lengths so because I
[931.87] Curry: was going through so many legs I literally come back and pre-cut them all ready because every
[937.07] Curry: day I'd go out and fly it and come back in like pieces in a bag and have to rebuild it because
[942.75] Curry: it was so bad and it took me some months before I got to the stage where I could actually fly
[949.15] Curry: four batteries around without crashing I was so pleased just to get in the air but the KK1
[954.75] Curry: was an interesting board you had to flash it with a special little tool yeah and no screen
[965.23] Curry: you had little pots that you turned around with a screwdriver and this was just to alter the gains
[970.59] Curry: there was no concept of a tune it was about gains it's like it's shaking too fast if you turn the
[976.11] Curry: screwdriver it'll shake a bit slower and I remember I never had the situation with the KK1
[982.03] Curry: where I could let go of the sticks and it looked at it hover I would always have to hold the sticks
[986.51] Curry: in the curious direction just for it to do something but just the fact that I managed to
[990.99] Curry: get this thing in the air and managed to fly it around was just mind boggling to me a huge
[995.79] Lee: accomplishment with the KK1 yeah brilliant so Andy what about you what was your first
[1001.39] Lee: experiences in the hobby with a multi rotor site because you've been flying for a long time as well
[1005.47] AndyRC: haven't you yeah um so 1988 was when I first started flying fixed wing um and that was from
[1016.91] AndyRC: sea I know I know it was 1988 because that's the year the movie short circuit two was released
[1023.07] AndyRC: where I saw there's a there's a scene in short circuit two where they're flying these model
[1030.27] AndyRC: planes in the middle of a city believe it or not uh I don't know if any of you can remember it but
[1036.27] AndyRC: uh I saw that and then the year later I saved up and so probably took in 1989 when I actually
[1044.19] AndyRC: started flying um but uh to get into multi rotors about uh 2010 I bought a um it was from hobby
[1056.99] AndyRC: king a fly barless collective pitch micro helicopter and uh I learned I actually learned to
[1067.15] AndyRC: fly it on a sim something like real flight or probably something earlier than that and uh I
[1075.55] AndyRC: learned 3d and everything like that and then I when I when it came to the helicopter it was
[1082.35] AndyRC: identical I was amazed that so I sort of taught myself um my the basics because I think that's
[1089.79] AndyRC: really if you're getting into quadcopters that's where it if you come from halleys I think it
[1095.55] AndyRC: helps a lot especially the line of sight stuff you know which is very I think it's very important
[1102.19] AndyRC: um so 2010 would have been the collective pitch helicopter and then 2011 would have uh I actually
[1110.83] AndyRC: 20 my first it wasn't a multi-rotor experience it was fpv experience um I didn't know anything about
[1119.87] AndyRC: um like how fpv worked and uh hubson bought out the h107 not the h107d uh the the spy hawk
[1128.99] AndyRC: imagine calling something a spy hawk these days how naive it all was back then yeah yeah so I bought
[1140.11] AndyRC: that and absolutely loved it and funnily enough that that's one one of the way reasons my youtube
[1146.83] AndyRC: channel started is because uh bruce rc model reviews uh he gave it a really bad review but
[1154.27] AndyRC: of course at the time he was doing all the diy stuff so I guess when a it was all ready to go
[1163.47] AndyRC: you got the plane you got the controller it had a screen in the middle you've got everything
[1168.83] AndyRC: and uh I think he just didn't like that you could just go into you actually bought it from mapplins
[1175.07] AndyRC: as well so you know I did I did have the the you know 25 years of credentials of flying planes
[1185.47] AndyRC: though so it was just to to see if I got the fpv thing because this is a problem that still exists
[1194.75] AndyRC: today you know people will say if you if you've done a fixed wing line of sight or halleys without
[1203.63] AndyRC: a camera for some reason your my first reaction was to dismiss oh adding a camera's not gonna
[1212.43] AndyRC: add anything which of course is completely wrong yeah so I went from that so we're talking 2011
[1220.19] AndyRC: for the spy hawk 2012 for the h107d so this is all sort of ready to fly stuff my first uh
[1233.95] AndyRC: if if we want to talk retro stuff I bought a kk2 board from uh hobby king with a 450 size multi
[1245.47] AndyRC: rotor um I then built a flame wheel uh as most people do yeah um and it and it went and then
[1255.23] AndyRC: funnily enough it I went to micros because these um micro controllers came out uh anyone
[1263.71] AndyRC: might remember alien wee boards brush getting them really small uh and cameras started that's how you
[1270.75] Lee: and I met isn't it you I you 3d printed me a frame that's yeah that's it you picked me
[1276.75] Lee: and said can you 3d print me a frame that's how you and I met back then so that must be four or
[1281.39] AndyRC: five years ago uh that was longer it probably been about 2013 by that point yeah so so uh yeah
[1290.83] AndyRC: a long time yeah long time ago but uh yeah and Tony what about you when did you uh start this
[1297.23] Lee: whole were you flying before the whole multi rotor thing no I wasn't a geek until 2013
[1304.83] Lee: and what was your first experience like um if you're multi-rotors multi-rotors
[1313.47] Frank: on air what are you allowed to say it on air tony what come on what frank well I just I've
[1323.47] Tony: I've heard stories of your my first thing I was I remember being I remember being drunk once and
[1330.67] Tony: seeing I was drunk drinking and watching telly no youtube and I saw who I think was
[1339.55] Tony: Boris B flying over the top of trees and things like that and I was like I want to do that I need
[1346.03] Tony: to do that and the first thing I went out and done is bought the completely the wrong thing which
[1351.47] Tony: I bought a phantom one
[1355.87] AndyRC: not the right last enough it's not the wrong thing I if you know it was the wrong thing to
[1361.15] Tony: fly over trees and do upside down stuff like he was doing at the time but it was he was doing it
[1366.75] Tony: oh he wasn't doing it with a phantom okay no no no so I went and bought a phantom one and um
[1372.03] Tony: stuck all the fpv gear on it and it was flying that and I absolutely loved it bought goggles
[1378.27] Tony: and thought I was flying you know but obviously no because you're just pushing it along the sky
[1384.19] Tony: aren't you really um bought that I bought the second and the third um and then I remember
[1392.03] Tony: contacting someone online and asking him to build me a quad I don't even know I wish I knew the guy's
[1399.95] Tony: name I don't even know where he was from he was up from like up north or something I don't know
[1404.75] Tony: he sent me a I sent him money he bought me a tranis and set me up a
[1410.83] Tony: not a qav 250 what's before that black uh blackout yeah so what's the copy of that
[1422.67] Tony: one of them and just went out every day just going like this off and down off the ground
[1429.79] Tony: basically for I don't know it took me six months to learn how to fly and I was oh it's just that's
[1437.23] AndyRC: pretty decent it took me two years to learn how to fly fixed wings it was it was horrible but I
[1443.71] Tony: loved it I loved it once well you know when I've got the knack of it and then um metal Danny said
[1449.55] Tony: go and sit in the middle of a field one day and just take it on that crow and after when I've done
[1454.99] Tony: that and loved it absolutely loved it so yeah 2013 so that's really interesting so a lot of us
[1463.39] Lee: all came into it because for me I was flying a little bit of fixed wing then did the in fact
[1468.67] Lee: you can just see behind me that thing there is actually the tail rotor of an aligned t-rex 500
[1476.27] Lee: which I can't part with that little red thing is you know one those key that says um that says
[1482.43] Lee: remove before flight it's one of them little jobs and uh behind me over my shoulder are two
[1488.11] Lee: 450s and they um that I loved helicopters the noise they make fantastic but for those of you
[1494.59] Lee: that have done hell is you'll know that if anything slightly goes wrong it basically just
[1499.07] Lee: destroys itself completely and you have to spend another 12 hours putting the head back together
[1503.71] Lee: and then around uh 2012 this 2011 2012 watching all that same David Windersall stuff
[1513.07] Lee: and he's got a lot to answer for hasn't he a lot of us are in this because of him
[1517.31] Lee: what a star he was watching this tricopter thing and back in the early days I don't know if some
[1522.19] Lee: of you remember but the very first ones he did were using a swash mix for a 120 degree swash mix
[1531.31] Lee: for a helicopter with three individual gyros on each arm to try and counteract any oscillation
[1539.71] Lee: and I was watching that and I nearly nearly pulled the trigger and bought one
[1544.27] Lee: I bought all the bits because I had things like the the gyros from the helis and then um got a
[1550.59] Lee: little indoor well it wasn't an indoor it was a hubsan very one of the small hubsan models um
[1557.07] Lee: and tried to fly it and thought oh my god this is so easy because compared to a helicopter which
[1561.95] Lee: is like trying to balance a plate on a stick right um the multi-rotor you could take your
[1567.63] Lee: fingers off the sticks and it didn't immediately kill itself within 30 milliseconds if you're
[1572.11] Lee: letting go of the sticks I thought this is easy and then my first ever quad was about 2013 and
[1577.87] Lee: it was Chris at armaton who was on RC groups at the time Bob Bobby Pine I think his name was on
[1584.75] Lee: RC groups and he was offering to build quads for people I had no idea what way to build in a quad
[1590.67] Lee: it all looked far too complicated so a KK I've still got it behind me KK 2.0 board uh repurposed
[1598.35] Lee: airplane motors that weren't really for quads but it was the only ones that would fit uh ESCs
[1604.99] Lee: that had Simon K flashed onto them do you remember all day with that yeah four in the draw that
[1611.63] Lee: actually worked okay but you had to have to program them you had to peel the corner back
[1616.99] Lee: and you had to have a some kind of flash I can't remember what it's called now
[1621.47] NJ: that's all the tool in the end but there was a guy online who was doing that in the UK you'd send
[1626.19] NJ: him your your ESCs and he'd flash them and send them back to you that was it and then um and it
[1633.15] Lee: was on a cn aluminium cnc frame and I absolutely loved it and unfortunately I just fell in love
[1640.11] Lee: and the helicopters just went to the side because I could take all the multi rotors to the field
[1645.95] Lee: and the worst I would do is snap a prop or two and to fix the prop or two was a 10 second job
[1652.59] Lee: rather than a whole a two nights at home rebuilding and resetting up the head from scratch
[1657.79] Lee: um but but the interest is really interesting that you guys have the same experience because
[1661.95] Lee: if you think that was only eight years ago where we were doing all this bespoke wacky stuff with
[1669.07] Lee: stuff that kind of almost didn't work we had cc3d we had multi-we do you remember multi-we
[1677.23] Lee: and for those of you that don't remember it isn't some kind of weird sex thing it's just
[1682.03] Lee: it was it was a board it can be it can be yeah thank you for that Andy I just like to
[1688.91] Lee: i'll do it but the multi well what it actually was was um the wee controllers that had the
[1698.43] Lee: gyroscopes accelerometers back then you couldn't actually buy those things so what somebody did
[1704.27] Lee: was they took the board out of a wee controller and added some extra bits onto it and that then
[1711.47] Lee: became the flight controller and it was called the multi-we uh which is where the name comes from
[1716.35] Lee: which is weird to think that back in those days you would buy a really expensive piece of technology
[1721.55] Lee: like a wee game system and then immediately crack open one of the controllers so you could build a
[1726.83] Lee: flight controller that works kind of ish but to kind of go back to how far we've come just to kind
[1733.87] Lee: of finish this little bit off Wayne you were talking to me the other day about how you went
[1737.87] Lee: back and tried to fly one of those early quads with a kk board and what it was like do you want
[1742.03] Lee: to just tell that story because it just kind of brings to light everything we're talking about
[1746.35] Curry: well i did and i'm i'm a real sentimental idiot so i've still got my original it's not quite
[1750.91] Curry: original i've still got my tricopter it's got the kk2 in it now but i thought i had such good
[1756.51] Curry: memories of flying it because it's it's a big beast it's got these massive props it goes
[1760.43] Curry: over noise and it's sort of i remember it being really smooth but i attempted to fly it and it
[1766.03] Curry: was like trying to trying to fly a bag of nails around it was awful it was all over the place
[1770.59] Curry: it was shaky um the kk2 has a screen on it which i thought was quite clever but could i remember how
[1776.51] Curry: to program it and get it flying so i was fighting all the way around the field and but it's just
[1783.55] Curry: the illustration of now you can pretty much chuck everything together and the flight control is so
[1788.11] Curry: good it's been so advanced that it will fly really smoothly and just back then we were so pleased
[1794.03] Curry: that we were here and we were seeing and it was like magic and just the fact you could go around
[1799.55] Curry: the field and you know maybe not crash even if you did you're like yeah i've got this far
[1803.87] Curry: um that that's what it was all about but if you if you try and go back and fly something very early
[1808.43] Curry: very early it's really bad that's it well i've still got my zmr 250 with my original
[1814.99] Curry: nazar board in and i i've managed after several months to get that tuned and that still flies
[1820.11] Curry: fairly smoothly albeit a bit clunky and heavy but yeah rose it's interesting i mean i look back
[1828.83] NJ: at some of the obviously as you say spoiled with the cc3d but even looking back at that
[1837.39] NJ: some of my early i've still got some early videos on my channel if you scroll way way back of me
[1841.87] NJ: flying with the cc3d and just the just the the taming of item when things like the naze 30s or
[1851.39] NJ: naze 32 came along where you didn't basically every stick input you were putting in was trying
[1857.79] NJ: to get it to stay level you know you could get the momentum going but then just stopping every
[1863.23] NJ: other type of external factor throwing the quad around and that's where you didn't have time to
[1868.99] NJ: do flips rolls and all the other you all of your concentration was on can i keep the horizon level
[1875.63] NJ: with with you know my my field of view here uh it's it's so crazy and that jump from the cc3d
[1882.99] NJ: to the naze 32 for me that was such a massive jump i don't think i've ever seen anything
[1889.31] NJ: jump as big or maybe there will there won't be as big a jump ever again it was such such a huge
[1895.39] NJ: thing when suddenly i turn was a thing and you could let go of the sticks and it would just track
[1901.15] NJ: where you where you left it it was yeah what i'll just say one thing though lee just before you
[1906.59] Curry: move on what one thing i wanted to do is just acknowledge the the level of innovation we had
[1911.63] Curry: back then if you look at the original kk board when it when it was first coming out it was um
[1918.11] Curry: ralph who who put it together which basically collected a whole bunch of bits and so i've put
[1922.67] Curry: this together he wrote in avr assembly the code for four types of multi-rotor you could do with
[1928.75] Curry: it and the fact that i think as alex in paris developed the multi-we the fact he said i'm
[1932.99] Curry: going to rip that we controller apart and try and build it into a controller it just blows my mind
[1938.75] Curry: the fact they were just coming up with this stuff is just amazing and that's just progressed
[1942.83] Curry: so much but i think um the the early pioneers had uh you know we've got a lot to thank them for
[1950.43] AndyRC: really to get in a started unfortunately they're they're not really around anymore which is the
[1956.83] Curry: sad thing isn't it no although the legacy of multi-wee that then went into base flight and
[1962.67] Curry: carried on into beta flight so there's still some of that code floating around might be in there
[1967.07] Lee: yeah well i i think i think there's probably the odd line or two still knocking around in
[1971.15] Lee: in beta flight let's be honest because beta flight is the great great great great great
[1975.31] AndyRC: grandson of multi-wee isn't it oh it's the immune flight now what the hell is beta flight
[1980.91] Lee: yeah i know that's it well yeah that's there's always the new kid on the block and that's the
[1985.31] Lee: interesting one i mean going back to kuri's point the the whole thing about the software
[1990.43] Lee: i know when i did the nazi 32 i'm trying to remember when that was was that 2015 ish
[1995.71] NJ: uh before oh yeah i think there was a little before that but was it yeah not not by much
[2002.03] Lee: 2014 might be yeah because if you think about 2014 because i i'm with nj my i'll my my first
[2009.79] Lee: big series on youtube that blew up with the nazi 32 one on naz 32 however you want to say it um
[2016.51] Lee: but i did the videos because no because i was looking online and trying to figure all this
[2021.79] Lee: stuff out and the idea of flashing because until then there'd been the cc3d that you had
[2026.99] Lee: with open pilot which actually open pilot was brilliant i loved open pilot it has a wizard that
[2031.87] Lee: set everything up for you um so anyone that used to come to me back in the day before nazi 32 days
[2037.23] Lee: 32 whatever um used to say i'm a new pilot what do i build i'd point them towards the cc3d because
[2044.35] Lee: when they went through it open pilot would do things like calibrate the radio would actually
[2048.51] Lee: talk them through setting up the flight modes it was really good and then the nazi 32 came along
[2053.87] Lee: with this thing called clean flight which you had to flash by base flight originally
[2063.47] Lee: yeah i came to it just um as the the whole base flight clean flight thing was uh was happening is
[2070.99] Lee: it worthwhile talking about that for those who missed it because there was a because the big
[2075.47] Lee: the big thing from multi-wheel to base flight and then base flight to clean flight was a massive
[2080.43] Lee: hoo-ha back in the day people were literally threatening each other with being firebombed
[2085.15] Lee: and stuff on our secrets it got way out of control oh that's not happened since has it
[2092.03] Lee: no drama anymore no no we've all grown up
[2097.39] Lee: but but i mean the richard well who did the base flight that was um what was his name time
[2102.99] Curry: time who's completely you know using the pc term mental so i can figure out
[2112.99] Curry: he made an open source program but and it basically he did the conversion from multi-way
[2119.63] Curry: onto the um the f1 processor that would go to board so it would run 32 yeah so it would run
[2127.23] Curry: much faster but um and i think the the story is dominick clifton trying to get involved in trying
[2133.39] Curry: to improve the code and was trying he was trying to you know do pull requests to get code in there
[2139.31] Curry: and time cop wasn't evident he's like my project no one does anything so dominick split into clean
[2144.59] Curry: flight and started doing things there and this caused great offense to time cop and i don't know
[2151.55] Curry: if it still says it but it had on the base flight repository if you're looking github it says
[2155.71] Curry: something like this is available to everybody except people called dominick clifton
[2162.03] Curry: in base flight like you're not allowed to copy it uh but yeah that was that was first first
[2167.39] Lee: drama of many it yeah and and yeah as as i said we haven't changed much have we as a hobby because
[2173.63] Lee: i i spoke to dominick about that whole thing because dominick was desperately trying to help
[2178.19] Lee: because uh the code bay because dominick is like a a mad skills programmer he was looking at the
[2184.99] Lee: code base and because it'd gone from 8 to 32 bit because multi-weave was 8 bit you know so kind of
[2191.31] Lee: zx spectrum for those of you that old enough to remember that kind of stuff technology up to 32
[2197.63] Lee: bit you know the modern exciting age of the nazi 32 the code was still very clunky because it
[2204.43] Lee: hadn't been cleaned so dominick as a programmer wanted to go through and clean the code up so it
[2209.39] Lee: was easier to maintain and to update and to patch and add new functionality to and you're right time
[2214.51] Lee: cop this and again this is all third hand so apologies to anybody if i'm getting this wrong
[2219.79] Lee: but as far as i remember it dominick was trying to help and timekit was like no i don't want you
[2224.27] Lee: touching my toys so dominick created clean flight and then there's clues in the name to create a
[2230.67] Lee: clean code base that then could be used for future projects and i think you know i think we
[2235.87] Lee: some people are mentioning in the comments at the moment that i think we've got a lot to thank
[2240.19] Lee: dominick for i mean he's kind of disappeared off off the face of the planet in terms of the hobby
[2244.83] Lee: he's made some stuff and if you remember you made the the other big game changer in terms of flight
[2250.35] Lee: controllers was one of his it was the seriously pro f3 do you remember that sp3 yeah yeah absolutely
[2256.03] Lee: had a few of those probably the most cloned flight controller on the planet um i remember
[2262.51] Lee: talking to him when he first made it and he was like oh it's uh it's an stm f3 base flight you
[2267.95] Lee: know flight controller and everyone and i was thinking we'll never use that power
[2273.31] Lee: right and then and then he and then he said i think i'll get six months before it gets cloned
[2277.71] Lee: in china and he got six weeks before the first close came out yeah it was really fast and then
[2284.99] Lee: there's still boards that use the same schema that come out now and that was probably as much
[2290.43] Lee: well almost as much as a jump in terms of performance from what i recall as it was from
[2295.15] Lee: the cc3d to the nazi 32 and then we went f4 and then f7 and h7 and everything else but it just you
[2302.67] Lee: know and the beta flight thing if you remember wasn't actually going to be when boris did it
[2308.35] Lee: it wasn't meant to be a system that anyone used it was just him messing about with this we're
[2314.03] Lee: trying to make it fly better so people could race with it yeah in the early days of sorry yeah it
[2320.51] NJ: was his own sort of for his own agenda really to start with and then he accidentally got some
[2325.39] NJ: stuff very right and then the fire started i think not just that as well i think as hobbyists
[2333.71] AndyRC: if there's something that may be better not beta we want it before it's actually
[2341.31] AndyRC: officially released and we're willing to set our cocktails on fire just to get that a little bit
[2347.39] AndyRC: better so i think that's why beta flight also prevailed so hands up anybody that actually had
[2353.39] AndyRC: a multi-rotor burst into flames what multi-rotor yeah i i don't have enough fingers
[2364.11] Frank: i've had some fires yeah we've had things go yeah i've done a lot of fires
[2372.03] Frank: does it does it matter if it's on jack's desk or not is that
[2377.63] Frank: i would say yes okay then yes this episode was recorded in front of a live online audience
[2384.91] Frank: downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only sensors to please the itunes people
[2390.27] Frank: hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider downloaded playing on your device
[2394.99] Frank: and is now playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons consider joining them and you'll
[2400.27] Frank: also get other online benefits find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out
[2408.75] AndyRC: i've got two quick funny stories the first one was um i've done a few builds so i figured uh
[2417.39] AndyRC: you know i'll do i'll do a build tutorial because back then there wasn't many at all i mean
[2423.87] AndyRC: obviously there's one crazy every day now so um my my first uh build tutorial i got like got
[2431.87] AndyRC: everything ready and uh i done everything i i thought i got everything right and i got it on
[2439.71] AndyRC: the the camera going i was like right last thing to do and this was this was before i realized
[2446.51] AndyRC: you know um doing a continuity check or anything and i just went i just went here we go and
[2452.67] AndyRC: the the video is finished plugged the battery and it just went
[2456.83] AndyRC: booth light i've got it on camera somewhere i should bring that out um the the second one
[2464.99] AndyRC: i've i've mentioned on the show before but it's why um i've got fire extinguishers everywhere
[2470.75] AndyRC: uh if you ever if you ever do testing for any company and this this was uh i'm sure ditone
[2477.95] AndyRC: won't mind me saying it but um they sent me this uh new model with this new thin efc
[2485.87] AndyRC: and it was in the middle of summer they just cut the grass and i was flying it around
[2492.51] AndyRC: and i got the the death roll flip of death whatever you want to call it i just are decent
[2498.67] AndyRC: when i got to it there was about probably uh about five to ten square foot of grass on fire
[2507.95] AndyRC: because i think i'm i told you i've told this story so much but anyways ever since then i i
[2516.03] AndyRC: it's actually in the court i could i could i could probably well i've got fire extingu I've got lipo
[2521.79] AndyRC: fire extinguishers and uh co2 fire extinguishers uh so if you ever want to do this as you know
[2530.75] AndyRC: testing make sure you've got fire extinguishers so that that's my story do you know that's
[2535.87] NJ: sorry just one one thing while we're on that subject of things when they transitioned i
[2540.43] NJ: actually had a comment it was a couple of weeks ago now on a very old video of mine which was
[2545.71] NJ: called bait flight tuning and uh PID tuning and it was uh as as you'd expect it to be
[2553.15] NJ: but uh the comment that made me burst out laughing was someone had put this is clearly clean flight
[2559.07] NJ: you idiot uh and of course the early base flight was you flashed it in clean in clean
[2566.59] NJ: flat how you got it across but it didn't have its own configurator did it yeah exactly uh so yeah
[2573.87] NJ: i did what i thought would be the best thing to do and just pin the comment let the rest of the
[2578.43] Lee: lines go out and yeah let's leave it hanging out because the yeah it's it's really interesting
[2585.55] Lee: because if you think about all the stuff that we've done it to me and it's kind of interesting
[2591.47] Lee: i just see whether you guys feel the same it feels longer than seven or eight years that we did in the
[2598.11] Lee: hobby they're like dog years aren't they i think the thing's moving so quick i think they really
[2604.03] Lee: are and it's just you know it was just really looking back and looking at the multi-weave
[2608.67] Lee: videos and there's apart from the fact that the video editing and everything was bloody horrible
[2613.47] Lee: and it's always the same when you do video content i'm sure andy you feel the same way and
[2617.63] Lee: curry you did you look back at your early videos and you kind of go oh that already could be better
[2622.59] Lee: or there's always something you could have improved but it but just i've never known anything in my
[2627.31] Lee: entire life develop and change that quickly in six years the only thing i can think of was the pc
[2634.43] Lee: industry in the 90s which probably changed that fast but that's the only other thing i can even
[2639.15] Lee: think of that's had that much innovation is just smart the other interesting thing is is how
[2644.83] Curry: people jumped on single trends and everybody did the same thing so when it first started out
[2649.79] Curry: everyone had a multi-rotor and then at some point everybody had a flame wheel f450 frame to fly
[2654.75] Curry: around and then everybody had a zmr and it's like oh i've got a kk and then it's gone to nays 32 and
[2661.39] Curry: it's like this jump jump jump it's little like everyone had a brushless gimbal at some point
[2665.95] AndyRC: and try flying well you had to have the newest thing didn't you so because it was better and
[2672.11] AndyRC: it's still the same now it's just it's just that the the increase is sort of there was definitely
[2681.39] AndyRC: a point where it slowed down i kind of feel like it's going up now though you know if drone racer
[2688.19] Frank: has a funny comment i just want to yeah you buy a new product it is out of date before getting it
[2694.03] NJ: to fly yeah as well right pride of place in out here oh my god you were the first x-coss in the
[2709.31] NJ: i mean this is the this is frankincord can it and who knows what we've got here as well
[2714.27] Curry: for those that remember what is this that's old school that is a dji 920 kv motor isn't it that
[2721.55] Curry: is but what's this on it this this oh that's balancing how you balance them back in the day
[2730.27] AndyRC: i thought you were covering up the logo just because you were embarrassed
[2735.31] Curry: look at that here on the floor and the cryptopters behind me i can't speak did you have the flight
[2742.83] AndyRC: did you have the flight controller to be the full version nj or are you unwilling to comment
[2748.35] AndyRC: because you could do that because that's the or is that the full version
[2755.79] Tony: and then you got the uh the orange yellow one which was the
[2759.31] Tony: better one but you could flash it couldn't you all right let's not talk about that
[2765.07] NJ: the draw with that was was the gps really because it was one of the first that did a really good job
[2770.35] NJ: with well and also really bad job in some cases but that when the gps did work it was the first
[2776.19] NJ: time you kind of had the confidence to go a little further knowing you had a little bit of
[2779.95] AndyRC: a safety net there so see i went down nothing ever came of them did it i went down the other route
[2786.43] AndyRC: because of lee uh with uh arju copter so i got an apm was it to put two points something uh
[2795.31] AndyRC: on my flame wheel this is and then uh went down the pix hawk route and uh so yeah we should give
[2802.11] AndyRC: them a mention as well because i don't think we have and that that's a whole different set a
[2807.71] AndyRC: skill set to learn all of that so uh yeah it is and if you want a smooth flying model if you're
[2813.39] Lee: not bothered about racing but you just want to fly around and it to look silky smooth think that um
[2819.15] Lee: the pix hawk and also things like ardu copter and ardu plane actually are just bloody great
[2824.67] Lee: and actually now you can run it on you don't have to run it on pix hawk you can run it all right
[2828.43] Lee: omnibus and stuff you still get the same thing yeah oh brilliant so i'll tell you that little
[2835.63] NJ: hub stand needs an honorable mention as well i know that i got a lot of people into the hobby
[2847.15] Lee: andy talked about yeah i had one of them at the tiny roof event on tuesday where i was doing all
[2852.11] Frank: the live streaming that we were talking about last week uh someone brought along uh an original
[2857.47] Frank: inductrix and everyone was like oh isn't it definitely so well they did they did i've just
[2864.43] Lee: been playing with that mobula sixth one which is like a it's like the inductrix but the modern
[2868.59] Lee: version and they're just they are so much fun but because the problem is a lot of the newer ones
[2873.39] Lee: have gone bigger and bigger and bigger but going back to that really small size you can just you
[2877.23] Lee: can fly through the like you know in in between anything it's fantastic um so look guys i'm just
[2883.39] Lee: conscious that we've been going for like 46 minutes um and the other thing there's a couple
[2887.79] Lee: of other things i wanted to talk about uh so we talked a little bit about the last 10 years in the
[2892.59] Lee: hobby which is brilliant and thank you for doing that because that's really it's just you know when
[2896.75] Lee: you kind of have your own experience and you kind of look back because it's kind of a document the
[2901.47] Lee: youtube channel you look back and it's kind of a diary of all the stuff and crap you were dealing
[2905.71] Lee: with and it's really fun to see that we all kind of seem to get pulled into this at about the same
[2910.83] Lee: time and all have the same gray hair but the but looking for i'm i'm i've also been thinking about
[2917.47] Lee: what i'm interested in and lots of chats with guys about what i'd love for the next three four
[2923.47] Lee: five years ideally the you know the next decade that we've got in front of us in the hobby
[2928.27] Lee: and i just wanted to kind of go around and just talk a little bit about that about what our hopes
[2933.55] Lee: and aspirations are for the hobby in the 20s and i'll i'll kick us off because one of my friends
[2940.35] Lee: is part of a a radio control flying club that's based up in blackpool and the membership's gone
[2947.15] Lee: down from something like 180 to 13 so it's on it unfortunately on its last legs and he's um he's a
[2955.15] Lee: he's into fpv multi-rotors foam wings lots of things that lots of modern clubs should be embracing
[2963.55] Lee: but a lot of the the people that's at that club think that anything unfortunately that isn't
[2970.11] Lee: balsa and isn't glow or ic isn't real radio control and i think that's part of the reason
[2976.11] Lee: why that particular club potentially could be struggling because they're not embracing the
[2980.19] Lee: modern hobby my hope for the next decade is that all of these amazing places that have got
[2987.55] Lee: permission to fly open their doors to the rest of the hobby that isn't bothered about balsa woods
[2993.79] Lee: or glow or ic so the one give us places to fly and also add all that that great thing that that
[3000.35] Lee: kind of community stuff because half of the well a third of the fun i get out of this hobby is
[3005.31] Lee: building the bloody stuff a third is flying it and the other third is meeting people like you guys
[3010.91] Lee: and hanging out and just having a bloody laugh so and unfortunately unless you've got a club
[3017.23] Lee: or somewhere where you can go where you're going to bump into people who have the same
[3021.31] Lee: interest as you you're never going to have that you know laughing joking and and all that you know
[3026.83] Lee: the round of applause when you make your first time around the lap those kind of things you're
[3031.15] Lee: going to miss out on so for me i would say the third your first thing that i'm hoping is that
[3035.39] Lee: the clubs wake up and embrace the modern hobby and get people involved i don't think it'll be
[3040.35] AndyRC: waking up lee uh that generation just needs to die off and then and then we'll we'll make these
[3048.83] AndyRC: clubs and then fpv will be embraced that's what that'll be what will happen i i completely agree
[3056.99] NJ: with what you're saying both of you actually it's it's very much exactly that thing of a lot of the
[3064.75] NJ: clubs that are established don't want to let the new technologies in um and that generation is
[3071.55] NJ: getting older and they're not i mean i've got the same problem where i am now i've been in this
[3075.31] NJ: particular area where i live for about uh five six years now and the first thing i did when i got
[3080.83] NJ: here was i found three clubs and all three of them let's bear in mind i wasn't even talking
[3085.55] NJ: multirotors i went to them and said oh great you guys are here um do you do heli allow helicopters
[3091.63] NJ: and all three of them were a no it was just planes and and that's it and anything with uh
[3097.47] NJ: you know spinning blades and that isn't as you say as you say if it's not i see if it's not balsa
[3103.47] NJ: wood and you know who remembers doping wings do you remember remember doping wings with tissue
[3108.75] NJ: yeah and now we're going back but but yeah that's that's definitely a thing for me for the future
[3114.27] NJ: absolutely they've got to start because as lee and i chat a little bit about this earlier but
[3120.03] NJ: it's that thing of you can't be the people who are complaining uh on one hand and then on the
[3125.79] NJ: other hand you're not allowing the younger people to come in with these new technologies and helping
[3130.67] NJ: them be responsible and say you know you've got to embrace a bit of this so yeah that's that's a
[3136.11] Lee: that's a pretty big one for me for sure the weird thing is is that every fpv pilot of every age that
[3142.91] Lee: i and i know i've talked to you individually about this but i've probably taken a dozen guys
[3148.91] Lee: through the fpv stuff letting them have a go at fpv on on fixed wing um and they've all been line
[3154.19] Lee: of sight pilots and the youngest one was 17 the oldest one was 73 i think he was um and with the
[3163.15] Lee: exception of one of those guys everyone when they finished the finished the flight it was a ride
[3168.03] Lee: along right i didn't let them fly but they they were looking out the camera as i was flying around
[3172.43] Lee: at the end of the flight kind of pulled the goggles up and went wow i didn't realize we
[3178.59] Lee: could do that and they've loved it and they've actually gone on to have their own fpv equipment
[3184.75] Lee: and started to get into it and i think i think in some cases some of these clubs are dismissing
[3190.43] Lee: the new technology without even trying it out exactly yeah i always whenever i fly i've always
[3196.99] NJ: got a second set of goggles with me for that exact reason anyone's inquisitive put those on
[3202.11] NJ: come and have a look and they're always beaming with smiles yeah i've actually started using but
[3207.39] Curry: sorry curry go for it okay no i was just gonna say i think one of the the crucial things together
[3211.95] Curry: about getting these generations to understand one another is just to put them together i remember
[3216.67] Curry: several times at the mini air shows where you've had the very traditional uh flight line with fixed
[3221.87] Curry: wing gunways and the drone races the next field once they get together and talk to one another
[3227.55] Curry: they understand that the technologies they're dealing with is actually very similar and that
[3232.75] Curry: there's generally a really big misconception from the fixed wing guys that it's just a computer
[3239.23] Curry: flying the the quad and there's no building involved and you're buying off the shelf and
[3242.75] Curry: there's a misconception from the drone guys that you know these are a bunch of sandalwearing guys
[3247.87] Curry: that are just like flying in circles and not interested anything and once they get together
[3252.43] Curry: they find all the commonality between themselves and if they just did that before they decided
[3257.63] Curry: what was allowed to go on the club there'd be a lot better it's very easy to sit in your
[3261.71] Curry: club and say oh we don't want any of this lark without actually getting the guys in and seeing
[3265.55] Lee: what they do and stuff yeah well maybe now some of these clubs are getting down to 13 members you
[3270.67] Lee: know not wanting to reiterate what andy was uh was talking about but maybe it is time for those
[3276.59] Lee: those clubs that are getting smaller for us to try and get more involved i know with my friend
[3280.43] Lee: getting involved with this particular club i've said to him i'm quite happy to get involved and
[3284.27] Lee: promote it because i'm sure if you cast a net around blackpool and southport and places like that
[3290.59] Lee: to you know offer pilots a chance just somewhere to fly because these days finding places to fly
[3297.39] Lee: is a pain in the ass where people won't you know kind of come up and annoy you or or get in your
[3302.67] Lee: way or you know dog walkers in particular because any nice day where you get a good day think right
[3307.31] Lee: i'll go into the middle of nowhere so i can fly and get some flying footage it seems like there's
[3311.95] Lee: a dog walker who always seems he was kind of hiding behind the bushes until i get the thing
[3317.15] Lee: in the air and i'm flying and then suddenly i'll out the cup and i'll be like right okay
[3321.23] Lee: we have to bring everything down and i know some people when i talk about this on the youtube
[3324.67] Lee: channel get really upset and say well hang on a minute you've got just as much right to be there
[3329.23] Lee: and while that is kind of true um if something happened and that drone hit the lady with the dog
[3336.99] Lee: the local paper is not going to say what a stupid woman she was for walking where somebody was flying
[3342.99] Lee: a multi-rotor it's going to be devil worshiping drone pilot killed old lady walking fido so you
[3351.31] Lee: know it's just easier for me not to do it but um but just having somewhere to fly i'd love to have
[3356.51] Lee: more places around here that i could just go and hang out with and every time i meet somebody that's
[3360.91] Lee: doing something different that i don't understand and they explain it to me then usually i'll
[3366.27] Lee: like oh that's really i've never tried that i'll have a go and nine times out of ten is another
[3370.35] Lee: part of the hobby that i'll get into like radio controlled cars i know and you've been doing stuff
[3374.83] Lee: with that as well i got that little emacs interceptor thing and it was brilliant yeah
[3379.39] AndyRC: they're great i think i think ground-based fpv is the way i would describe it because
[3384.43] AndyRC: it's not just limited to cars you've got bikes uh there's these crawlers uh we have one at the
[3390.75] AndyRC: makerspace uh amazing what those those things can do and uh yeah i think do you know what i think
[3398.19] AndyRC: rc cars when it comes to fpv is about at 2011 where we were and uh you know now now they've
[3409.15] AndyRC: got this like the emacs interceptor first ready to ready to run it's called it in the rc well
[3418.27] AndyRC: first ready to run fpv car i mean you know it for it to take 2019 or 2020 for that so i i think
[3428.19] AndyRC: especially and then add on top all of the legislation that you have to jump through to
[3434.91] AndyRC: get in the air i i can see this year being big for that kind of stuff and it's it's i
[3441.23] AndyRC: didn't think it'd be enjoyable um but uh yeah it really is great and you can you can do stuff
[3449.55] AndyRC: with rc cars fpv that you if you were to do on the road will either cost you a lot of money or
[3455.39] AndyRC: end up in prison uh as as lee knows with his fabulous uh amazing mx5 that that's all i can
[3465.39] AndyRC: think about when i go and visit lee uh but but but these cars they're great um yeah so yeah i've
[3474.27] NJ: got to ask um andrew because andrew's are very careful concise thinker about the group what
[3482.83] NJ: your thoughts for the for the future what would you like for the future what would i like because
[3487.79] Frank: yeah i mean i would like the frequency hopping spread spectrum revolution in fpv i mean the
[3494.99] Frank: the difference that made from going from a pegboard and kind of everyone having to kind of
[3500.83] Frank: fanny about around a pegboard and work out who can fly what channel and all that kind of stuff
[3505.71] Frank: like on cars or planes and everything when when that revolution happened with control
[3511.55] Frank: all of a sudden it's a much wider hobby it's so much easier to do events so much easier to
[3517.39] Frank: just have casual meetups it makes like you know and that's the sort of point where we're getting
[3522.59] Frank: where the where the regulations are now making it so much more oppressive you don't want to just
[3527.95] Frank: kind of go out and you know with a few of you to the middle of nowhere and try and have a fly you
[3532.75] Frank: want to be able to go to the club field you want to go to a an organized event where you know you're
[3538.03] Frank: allowed to fly and it's it's hard to have that many people flying in that kind of situation
[3545.07] Frank: um and it requires a lot of someone telling people what they should do and that's annoying and don't
[3550.75] Frank: you don't want to do that too much but with uh and with you know something like the the tbs cloud
[3557.07] Frank: stuff that's coming through some maybe in the next couple generations of the dji and hdfb stuff
[3565.79] Frank: maybe we'll see more of this kind of thing coming together where it's that same you know you don't
[3570.67] Frank: think about all can i turn my transmitter on uh with your radio you know is this going to put
[3577.63] Frank: something out there yeah you don't know about that unless someone's flying spectrum would be loving
[3582.59] Tony: just plugging your motor over in and just putting your goggles on and just going wouldn't it yeah
[3588.19] Frank: it's interesting you can't even if it says too many people are flying you need to wait
[3594.27] Curry: like if we could just have that here's what i wrote down in advance frank i wrote down
[3600.03] Curry: some way of locking in fpv channels without bleed being able to fly with friends instead of
[3604.43] Curry: spending 20 minutes sorting out channels are getting wiped out because someone has gone too
[3608.11] Curry: far away or too close yeah whenever i don't know how many people have gone and and
[3612.51] Curry: meant to fly with friends but it seems all so casual and stuff on the videos but we always miss
[3617.07] Curry: out that first 30 minutes yeah standing around like no hang on no fly further away and i'll see
[3623.07] Curry: again and then you like this big panic when you're flying out there and someone says i'm turning on
[3628.59] Frank: and you're like oh shit what's going to happen oh i thought everyone was on 200 no you see this
[3635.23] NJ: is what contradicts the old school clubs that won't let the new members in they like to sit
[3640.03] NJ: around talking for 45 minutes before they five or two yeah with a with a whiteboard i'd say there's
[3645.63] Lee: one last thing i'm just conscious we're coming up to the hour the other thing that i would like to
[3649.15] Lee: see is for us to rip up the frequency bands and channels in fpv because we know what band we have
[3656.35] Lee: the fact the fact that we have band f is a legacy thing from the days of fat shark bands a b the
[3662.91] Lee: boscan bands all that we've inherited all these different bands and all of them are not really
[3669.71] Lee: perfect they don't have the right separation to avoid interference with each other so you have to
[3675.23] Lee: try and do your best race band isn't optimal because everything is equidistantly spaced so you
[3680.67] Lee: get harmonics on other channels i did a video about that with menace um i would like somebody
[3686.03] Lee: to just come up with with the frequencies that we have available what are the maximum number of
[3691.79] Lee: pilots that we can get with the proper separation so that we can all fly with less of this chimping
[3698.11] Lee: and messing about that would be i would be over the moon with that i've asked menace to try and
[3702.19] Lee: come up with it and i think he's working on it but maybe have you know six we could probably get
[3706.67] Lee: away with six pilots with the optimum separation in the uk and maybe eight pilots in other parts
[3712.99] Lee: the world where they have those extra little bits either side the band uh and let's just get away
[3717.39] Lee: with the i don't want a 37 channel bloody system i just give me six or seven so me and my mate you
[3725.15] Lee: know when i'm at the field we can go i'm on one you're on six you're on four great i'll go for
[3729.95] Lee: three brilliant going bang we're flying i think that would make a lot of difference all the events
[3734.75] Frank: now pretty much as far as i can tell are running on the imd um set to channels and that that is a
[3741.47] Frank: mix of raceband and fat shark and you you can set them up as your favorites so that you can
[3747.87] Frank: swap between them so there's there's kind of ways around it but yeah if you there's there's still
[3753.39] Frank: kind of this translation thing because you know some fat sharks are the same as some racebands
[3758.91] Frank: so you know some channels have two names and then some people are talking about it in megahertz
[3765.07] AndyRC: and it's all that kind of thing you know if you buy the irc trump you can change channel power
[3772.03] AndyRC: output without ever turning a quad on which is why it's my number i'm not endorsed by them i wish i
[3777.71] AndyRC: was uh they've little little uh nfc thing you put your phone up to it no you don't need the wand
[3785.71] AndyRC: my phone works down again is what i can say no it works mine works every time i've been rubbish
[3792.51] Curry: well i like frank's idea of when you you just turn on and your your vtx will say oh these channels
[3799.95] Curry: are busy uh i'll go to this one and then it will sink in with your goggles or it says too many
[3805.79] Curry: people flying you'll have to wait something like that so you don't have to think about it there's
[3809.55] AndyRC: a system that does that but it requires you to all have it and i'm not going to talk it mention
[3815.07] AndyRC: and it's called dji okay when i don't wait i'm sorry sorry i'm just i'm just conscious of the
[3821.71] Lee: time i'm just we've been going over the hour and on that note we'll probably call it uh time for
[3827.63] Lee: tonight thank you for everyone for watching thank you for everyone in the comments we haven't talked
[3831.87] Lee: to law thought about the comments but i've been keeping an eye on all the bits and pieces so
[3835.63] Lee: thank you to everyone some brilliant stuff in there so uh we'll say good night so uh good night
[3841.07] Lee: from frank bye good night from nj see you next time good night from andy i'll see tata good night
[3850.27] Tony: from curry goodbye and good night from tony bonjour i'm just gonna do one shout out from the chat
[3857.79] Tony: and that is to darne own one we're thinking about you bruv so keep keep going mate keep going yeah
[3864.51] Lee: absolutely sending lots of love and uh good night from me painless 360 thank you for jack for letting
[3869.63] Lee: me take the seat tonight i believe there are going to be other guest uh kind of hosts in the
[3874.59] Lee: future week or two um and thank you to everybody that's been involved it's been really good fun
[3879.71] Lee: so i'll say goodbye and as always happy flying telemetry loss i was doing impression frank then
[3887.63] Lee: bye
