[1321.17] Edd: First one is sole trader, and the good news for sole traders
[1323.73] Edd: is you're going to get looked after really, really well.
[1326.05] Edd: There's a tax calculation, which caps out at 30K.
[1331.89] Edd: Now, the exact calculation, I don't have a good memory of facts and figures,
[1335.89] Edd: but Tony, Paul's going to give me some information to pass on to you.
[1341.65] Edd: So if there's any other sort of sole traders out there
[1345.65] Edd: that want the exact tax counts and how to get that,
[1350.61] Edd: I can pass on my accountant's details.
[1352.53] Edd: He's being an absolute gem at the moment
[1355.01] Edd: and just helping anybody that's sort of reaching out for help.
[1357.97] Edd: So yeah, sole traders are going to get looked after, which is great.
[1360.53] Edd: The bad news is it's going to be delayed, you guys quite rightly said, till June.
[1365.09] AndyRC: I thought the cap was 50K, they said.
[1367.89] Edd: Sorry, yeah, you're right.
[1368.93] Edd: Yeah, apologies.
[1369.65] Edd: Yeah, there's that.
[1370.53] Edd: Not that it matters, mate.
[1375.73] AndyRC: I just watched the news very closely.
[1377.89] Edd: Yeah, no, you're good.
[1378.85] Edd: But the cap is on profits and not turnover.
[1381.65] Edd: So if you're in the business of spending a lot of money on equipment
[1388.37] Edd: or subcontractors, that gets, obviously, that helps your profit,
[1393.33] Edd: your profit margin.
[1395.89] Edd: It's not 50K turnover.
[1397.89] Edd: It's what you're left over with in profit after all your expenditure.
[1401.57] Edd: So there's some good news on that front for sole traders.
[1405.33] Edd: For limited companies, sole owner limited companies
[1408.21] Edd: who are taking dividends as majority of payment have been absolutely hung out to dry.
[1414.37] Edd: So this is a category, sadly, that I fall into.
[1418.05] Edd: So the advice I was given to save money on tax
[1424.29] Edd: was to basically pay myself minimum wage and take the rest on dividends.
[1427.49] Edd: So rather ironically, the conservatives today have sort of been the fair tax drum.
[1438.53] Edd: And they're looking at personal tax as opposed to corporation tax.
[1442.61] Edd: So every limited company has to pay corporation tax.
[1446.05] Edd: And it's your personal tax that the calculations are based on.
[1449.81] Edd: So the irony is that there are a lot of big companies, big limited companies out there,
[1453.49] Edd: which are sort of avoiding corporation tax.
[1455.33] Edd: So they're kind of hitting the wrong targets, sadly.
[1458.53] Edd: So what we can do as single owner limited companies is to furlough ourselves or any
[1467.09] Edd: employees we've got.
[1468.37] Edd: Someone mentioned that a minute ago.
[1470.05] Edd: It's basically declaring that you're not operating.
[1472.21] Edd: You're not working, but you're not closing the business either.
[1475.09] Edd: You get 80% of the value of your salary that is on your payroll.
[1480.61] Edd: So anyone who runs a limited will be on payroll.
[1484.05] Edd: And for me, that is minimum wage.
[1486.77] Edd: So I think we do to sort of get back sort of between 600 or 700 pounds a month.
[1491.49] Edd: So it's something.
[1494.85] Edd: It's not anywhere near sort of current earnings, but it's something at least anyway.
[1499.41] Edd: So there's a little bit for single owner limited company operators.
[1503.49] Edd: But there's a lot more help for sole traders out there.
[1506.69] Edd: So, MJ, are you limited or are you sole trader?
[1509.49] Edd: I can't remember.
[1510.13] Edd: No, sole trader.
[1511.41] Edd: Okay.
[1511.65] Edd: So you're really going to be really well looked after.
[1513.49] Edd: As long as you can get yourself through till June, you'll be really good.

[1521.97] NJ: VAT threshold looks like 18, 85.

[1534.21] NJ: In some instances, it's useful to be VAT registered
[1537.25] NJ: that can benefit the business.
[1538.61] NJ: But for me, it doesn't matter so much.

[1542.53] NJ: I'm sure I heard on, I promise I wasn't listening to LBC when I was
[1547.17] NJ: No, but I heard something about the chance of saying there would be
[1554.61] NJ: a way to get an advance on what's owed in June.
[1560.45] Edd: Yeah, so you can fall back on interruption loans.
[1565.33] Edd: So there's been some good news and bad news with that.
[1568.77] Edd: So in the press, quite rightly, they pulled up that a lot of the major banks have been
[1573.49] Edd: putting some horrendous conditions on interruption loans, including guarantee of your house,
[1578.29] Edd: various other things, which is not good.
[1581.57] Edd: However, that goes against the guidelines that were set out by the government in the first place.
[1586.61] Edd: So the government have been sitting on the banking sector in the background.
[1592.53] Edd: And now the banks are starting to fall into line.
[1595.01] Edd: So I know, from what Paul was saying on the call, sorry, Paul's my accountant,
[1598.77] Edd: what Paul was saying on the call that Barclays were the first to sort of fall back into line
[1602.37] Edd: with the exact government recommendation.
[1604.45] Edd: So it's now, it's between six or 12 months.
[1607.65] Edd: I don't know if someone can remember the exact figure.
[1610.21] Edd: I can't remember, but it'll be interest free.
[1612.53] Edd: And in some cases, it'll be it'll be payment deferred, as well.
[1616.93] Edd: And that's just to just to get you through it.
[1618.69] Edd: So it's a combination of using an interruption loan,
[1621.25] Edd: and then getting received when you get the grant back.
[1625.81] NJ: And you shouldn't be paying any interest to that point.
[1627.73] NJ: So you should just pay it straight off with what you receive.
[1630.69] NJ: That's it.
[1631.33] NJ: Yeah, that's it.
[1632.53] AndyRC: You know, a good thing, the June thing, though, is like a bit of a ruse,
[1637.57] AndyRC: because potentially, we could sort in itself out by June.
[1642.77] Edd: Well, the reason the reason for the delay is because you've got there's a four week window
[1646.61] Edd: now to do your self-assessment return to apply for the grant.
[1651.09] Edd: So it's relying on business owners to declare to HMRC how much they've earned.
[1657.41] Edd: And I can't remember what the dates are.
[1658.77] Edd: You'll have to look online.
[1660.77] Edd: But for example, if it's based on, say, the last year's trading,
[1664.13] Edd: you've now got four weeks to get all those figures together
[1666.85] Edd: and get a submission into HMRC.
[1669.17] Edd: So HMRC have got a job of effectively building a new department
[1673.97] Edd: to deal with just these submissions for the grants.
[1678.61] Edd: There's a lot of sole traders in the UK.
[1680.61] Edd: It's extra overhead on workload.
[1683.25] Edd: We all know that the businesses, whether your government side or private business,
[1688.85] Edd: is under conditions of working from home.
[1692.85] Edd: I think HMRC probably are going to be on a dispensation,
[1695.97] Edd: but they all for sure have a reduced staff count as well.
[1699.65] Edd: So it's very easy to administer a payroll system that's already established
[1706.21] Edd: because sole traders aren't on payroll.
[1708.13] Edd: They're on a declaratory basis.
[1710.69] Edd: So it's a return.
[1712.77] Edd: So when you've got companies that have payroll
[1715.25] Edd: and all those accounts have already been submitted to HMRC,
[1718.13] Edd: the hard work has already been done.
[1720.69] Edd: For sole traders, you've got to tell HMRC and HMRC
[1724.53] Edd: they've got to collect all that data and then approval decline.
[1727.73] AndyRC: Because the news made it out to be we'll contact you if you're eligible.
[1733.81] Edd: Well, the mechanics of how you go about it are yet to be published.
[1738.61] Edd: So like any government initiative,
[1744.05] Edd: there's a sort of a delay between an announcement
[1746.13] Edd: and then the mechanics of how you do it.
[1749.33] Edd: So even the details on the fine detail that your accountants
[1753.81] Edd: have to go through or payroll companies have to go to for furlough
[1757.09] Edd: is I think there's still some questions over there being answered.
[1760.37] Edd: But yeah, everyone's scurrying to do it.
[1762.29] Edd: So there's no sort of conspiracy or sort of bad feeling towards the June deadline.
[1768.37] Edd: It's literally just a case of we've got to ask the nation to submit their information
[1772.21] Edd: and then process it because it's new information that hasn't been taken into account yet.

[1777.49] Curry: So it's based on this coming tax return, which happens when?
[1781.17] Curry: First of April is when it does the new tax year, isn't it, for the June tax return?

[1787.57] AndyRC: So I can always speak from a sole trader point of view.
[1796.05] AndyRC: So the tax year, as you say, Corey runs from is it the 4th of April to the next 4th of April,
[1805.89] AndyRC: but it's the obviously the previous year.
[1809.57] AndyRC: But yeah, yeah, well, you're always a year behind with your tax returns.
[1816.21] AndyRC: So the deadline online, this is what I was a little bit confused about when they were
[1822.85] AndyRC: talking about we're deferring all of your self-assessments till January next year.
[1831.49] AndyRC: And I'm like, well, if you do it online, that's when you do it anyways.
[1836.45] AndyRC: You got till January to do it.
[1840.05] Curry: So yeah, what I mean is it's based upon the tax return you may have already done,
[1845.49] Curry: which I have that would have started last April and goes up to whenever.
[1851.49] AndyRC: Which you should have submitted by if you'd done it online.
[1855.25] AndyRC: If you hadn't done it online, it was October last year.
[1858.77] AndyRC: Is it October?
[1859.89] AndyRC: End of October last year.
[1861.33] AndyRC: Or if you do it online, then it's I think it's the 31st of January, yeah.
[1869.17] AndyRC: So I think what they were talking about is when there are people who still haven't filled in their
[1876.05] AndyRC: tax return from last year.
[1878.61] AndyRC: And I think so when they say they're delaying that until 2020, do they mean the people?
[1886.61] NJ: I think the stuff that's getting referred to 2020 is if you pay,
[1893.17] NJ: if you when you get into a bracket, you have to pay a midterm payment.
[1899.09] NJ: So everybody has to pay that.
[1906.45] NJ: I thought the payment on account is what's being moved because that's usually
[1912.37] AndyRC: going over to 2021.
[1914.69] AndyRC: I mean, you've always been able to defer that.
[1917.49] AndyRC: But you have interest added on it if you defer it.
[1920.37] NJ: So I think they're getting that are basically just side swipe it until 2021.
[1926.69] NJ: Yeah.
[1927.25] Edd: So just just swing swing back to to claiming your grant that you may or may not be eligible for.
[1935.25] Edd: And it does all it does all depend on whether you are entitled to furlough yourself.
[1940.53] Edd: So does it does is your work dependent on interacting with large groups of people?
[1945.73] Edd: You can say, you know, like Neil, Neil, for example, has to furlough himself because,
[1953.41] Edd: you know, he can physically not work.
[1956.45] Edd: So it's it's there's a qualifier there.
[1959.81] Edd: Forgive me about the exact details on on dates and times.
[1963.41] Edd: I'm a dyslexic idiot.
[1965.01] Edd: So when I when I see something and I don't retain it, I'm a bit lazy.
[1969.41] Edd: I have my accountant and I just go sort out for me.
[1971.65] Edd: But what I do remember seeing is he had a spreadsheet and he had sort of three years
[1975.09] Edd: worth of counts and he was going across three years to work out percentage,
[1979.73] Edd: which you then used to apply the exact details of that.
[1983.49] Edd: I'll see if I can I'll I can drop an email and ask him to I think he's going to I think
[1990.13] Edd: he's going to be doing a blog post on Soul Traders, which will go out.
