[362.51] Curry: So a question to our many viewers, because a couple of them have mentioned Open.HD before.

[379.05] Curry: So, yes, if Stephen was here, he'd probably say something like, Open.HD is an open source project.

[405.05] Curry: How is it possible without DJI Goggles and spending £800 of your earned money to give your data away to China
[412.05] Curry: and which they can remotely turn your goggles on any time they like?
[416.05] Curry: I'm not about DJI not sending you any review goggles.
[421.05] Curry: Not like Jack. I don't have carry kit in brackets. DJI hate me.
[426.05] Curry: They do it by the use currently of Raspberry Pis.
[431.05] Curry: That is what they're doing.
[434.05] Curry: They have an air pie and a ground station pie, essentially.
[438.05] Curry: And your ground station obviously receives your air sends.
[444.05] Curry: And what they do, they hook it in to a flight controller.
[448.05] Curry: So your normal flight controller is up in your normally plane.
[452.05] Curry: People are flying at the moment.
[454.05] Curry: And it speaks MavLink, but it can talk free sky telemetry, be the flight.
[461.05] Curry: What am I trying to say?
[464.05] Curry: Hi, Nav.
[466.05] Curry: And this can generate a nice HD OSD and put it over the top of it.
[471.05] Curry: And that beams down.
[473.05] Curry: And people are getting really good results with this.
[476.05] Curry: They are fitting out multiple Wi-Fi adapters.
[480.05] Curry: Essentially, along with the pie, they're not using the internal Wi-Fi.
[484.05] Curry: They're fitting USB Wi-Fi adapters to get diversity,
[489.05] Curry: at least very much on the receiving station and also on the sending station.
[494.05] Curry: Is it all on planes or is it on quads as well?
[498.05] Curry: It's been on planes so far.
[500.05] Curry: I think people have put it on quads, but not the quads we're thinking about,
[503.05] Curry: because right now they are getting a sort of glass to glass latency of about 100 milliseconds,
[511.05] Curry: which is going to be too slow for flying fast 5-inch quads.
[515.05] Curry: However, one interesting thing that they are extending this for is something called...
[523.05] Curry: I've lost my link to it now, Frank.
[526.05] Curry: Where'd it go?
[529.05] Curry: Oh, here it is.
[531.05] Curry: Something called, who has heard of the Jetson Nano?
[536.05] Frank: Raise your hand.
[538.05] Frank: Where it all comes together, I see now.
[540.05] Curry: Nobody's there.
[542.05] Curry: So the Jetson Nano is a small single-board computer that NVIDIA has produced,
[548.05] Curry: and being NVIDIA, it has a 128-core GPU on it,
[554.05] Curry: along with a 4-core CPU and 4 gigs of memory.
[558.05] Curry: With that, they've been testing it.
[560.05] Curry: They haven't released it so far,
[562.05] Curry: and they are getting on that between about 40 and 50 milliseconds,
[568.05] Curry: which gets a little bit closer.
[570.05] Curry: What are you getting on the DJI?
[575.05] Curry: Tony, before it becomes on flyable, is it sort of 30-ish?
[580.05] Tony: No, I can fly on 30.
[582.05] Tony: If you put it on high-quality mode, it's around 30,
[586.05] Tony: and it bumps up to 37 sometimes,
[589.05] Tony: but it's flyable if you're freestyling nice and slow sort of stuff.
[598.05] Curry: Not too close to the ground or tree.
[600.05] Tony: No.
[602.05] Tony: You can definitely feel it.
[604.05] Tony: You can definitely feel when the lag starts,
[606.05] Tony: and you know, like, oh my God, I need to turn around,
[608.05] Tony: or I'm a bit high, or I'm behind something, but yeah.
[613.05] Tony: So I don't know.
[617.05] Tony: Anything above 50 is too much.
[620.05] Curry: Yeah.
[621.05] Curry: So that's where it is at the moment.
[624.05] Curry: So with the right camera, pie-to-pie, you can get down to about 85 milliseconds,
[629.05] Curry: which still puts it out of race quads,
[631.05] Curry: but puts it into your sort of large cruising quads or a plane
[636.05] Curry: that you're not flying at, 200 miles an hour, 6 inches.
[639.05] Tony: Yeah.
[640.05] Tony: If you were doing a long-range HD video with a 7-inch drone
[644.05] Tony: flying a wingfall, and it's got to be a cheaper option than DJI, isn't it?
[652.05] Tony: Well, yeah.
[653.05] Tony: If you know what you're doing, is it hard work?
[656.05] Tony: Could I do it?
[658.05] Curry: No, absolutely not.
[660.05] Curry: Not a chance at hell.
[663.05] Curry: But you're a special case.
[666.05] Curry: But you could get Jack to do it,
[670.05] Curry: because everyone knows that Jack is an expert on the Raspberry Pi
[673.05] Curry: because that's his job, isn't it?
[675.05] Curry: And you can ask him any Linux question ever,
[678.05] Curry: and he will instantly know the answer.
[680.05] Curry: But one interesting thing about it is using the whole end-to-end Wi-Fi link,
[686.05] Curry: you can use it as a control signal as well.
[688.05] Curry: So although you'll use a traditional radio,
[690.05] Curry: you can use a traditional radio,
[691.05] Curry: or you can plug it in via joystick mode to the Raspberry Pi,
[695.05] Curry: and you can fly the whole thing with that.
[697.05] Curry: So although the Pi, and at the moment they're recommending the Pi 4B,
[702.05] Curry: is quite sizable, you can take bits out.
[706.05] Curry: But you can fly it with the Pi Zero.
[709.05] Curry: There's a special build for the Pi Zero,
[711.05] Curry: there's a special camera for the Pi Zero,
[713.05] Curry: and they are obviously cheap.
[715.05] Curry: In fact, the camera is five times the price of the actual computer, bizarrely.
[719.05] Frank: Is that still using an external Wi-Fi dongle,
[723.05] Frank: or is that using its own?
[725.05] Curry: You will need a Wi-Fi dongle.
[727.05] Curry: In many cases, people are cutting out the USB connectors
[731.05] Curry: and soldering things straight on.
[733.05] Curry: Wow.
[734.05] Tony: I'm with Mr. Shady at the moment, right now.
[741.05] Curry: Well, yeah, if you want an out-of-the-box thing that works really well,
[746.05] Curry: then buy GGI it.
[747.05] Curry: If you enjoy to tinker,
[750.05] Curry: and you like the idea of people putting this together themselves,
[754.05] Curry: where things are going to sort of develop,
[757.05] Curry: then personally, I think it's quite an exciting system.
[760.05] Curry: And I think I'm going to put one together.
[762.05] Curry: I'm going to put my money down and actually buy some stuff.
[766.05] Frank: Are you going to go for the Raspberry Pi, or are you going to go for the Jetson?
[769.05] Curry: I'm going to go for the Pi,
[771.05] Curry: because the Jetson's a bit more expensive.
[775.05] Curry: At the moment, the Jetson's about 95 quid,
[778.05] Curry: as opposed to, I think, 34 pounds for a 2 gig Pi,
[783.05] Curry: which in the air is absolutely fine.
[785.05] Curry: He said you'd get an advantage to have more memory on the ground Pi
[789.05] Curry: just because it records everything to memory
[791.05] Curry: before it flushes it out to disk or whatever.
[794.05] Curry: What are you saying, Tom?
[795.05] Tony: What? Do you...

[800.05] Tony: Do you need HD goggles for this to work?
[804.05] Curry: Well, you need something to look at it, but the Raspberry Pi...
[808.05] Tony: Could you put a TV in the back of your car and use it like that,

[814.05] Tony: It's pointless wearing analog goggles flying it, isn't it?
[819.05] Curry: It would be, plus you wouldn't have anything to tune in with.
[822.05] Curry: On the Pi 4, I think there's two HDMIs out.
[825.05] Curry: A popular thing is to get a little ground station.
[828.05] Curry: There's a 7-inch touchscreen that people generally use.
[832.05] Curry: But because it's got HDMI out, you can go out to HD goggles if you've got them.
[838.05] Curry: So HDOs aren't quite up to HD.
[841.05] Curry: Not really HD, though, are they?
[843.05] Curry: It's close, but the Orca's box goggles,
[846.05] Curry: or you go to a separate monitor, which has full HD,
[849.05] Curry: and you can look at it on there.
[852.05] Curry: A lot of...
[853.05] Curry: So you could do a TV fly in the back of the seat or something?
[858.05] Curry: Yeah.
[859.05] Curry: That's quite good.
[860.05] Curry: Or you could just sit down with a big monitor on your lap.

[866.05] Tony: So, the time you bought your 50-inch screen
[870.05] Tony: and put it in the back of your car,
[872.05] Tony: it's going to cost the same as some goggles from DJI.

[879.05] Curry: and depends on what you're going to get.
[882.05] Curry: But I can't afford to splash out that much, sadly, on the DJI system.
[888.05] Curry: And I'm a little bit worried that then I'd have one thing,
[896.05] Curry: which is HD, and then I have all this other analog gear.
[901.05] Curry: I'm hearing so many stories about guys that are saying,

[976.05] Curry: when the latency is still at 100 milliseconds,
[979.05] Curry: because it's like, oh, this is amazing,

[983.05] Curry: So these are things that can change.
[986.05] Curry: One of the problems Stephen's having as like,
[990.05] Curry: there's only like four committees in the project,
[992.05] Curry: but he's saying there's so many people wanting to put changes in

[1150.05] Curry: But of what I've seen, I think they're doing really nice things,
[1154.05] Curry: especially with the OSD.
[1155.05] Curry: The OSD is just so clear and crisp in combination with flying it
[1160.05] Curry: like I'd be pilot or something and going out to like beyond 10K
[1165.05] Curry: or as we call it here, 400 meters and still looking really nice
[1169.05] Curry: and getting a really good frame rate.
[1171.05] Curry: And it recovers the signal instantly, Tony, if it loses it.
[1174.05] Curry: That's quite good.
[1175.05] Tony: No, that is quite good.
[1178.05] Tony: I've had problems with that, like double eight.
[1181.05] Tony: Yeah, I've had problems with trying to get the signal back.
[1184.05] Curry: I think the only thing it sounds like at the moment is
[1189.05] Curry: the Pi cameras aren't especially great quality lenses,
[1192.05] Curry: whereas the DJI camera is pretty exceptional from what we hear.
[1197.05] Curry: And that could be readily improved.
[1200.05] Curry: Very good.
[1201.05] Frank: Yeah, I think I've seen people kind of cannibalize the Pi cameras
[1206.05] Frank: and put other lenses on it.
[1209.05] Curry: Yeah, people are changing out the sensor and lenses
[1211.05] Curry: and the new Pi HQ camera has an M12 fit
[1216.05] Curry: so you can put your regular FP lens on that sort.
[1220.05] Curry: I think M12, aren't they?

[1746.74] Frank: So there's enough bandwidth for all the pilots to actually be able to fly.
[1752.74] Frank: And even then there's occasionally some kind of very brief glitches.

[1761.74] Tony: Which, if you're racing and your car does that for a millisecond,
[1766.74] Tony: it's not nice feeling.
[1769.74] Tony: So, you know, I think if it can do it...
[1774.74] Curry: I'm interested to know how they've got the range up that high then,
[1778.74] Curry: because they're still on essentially what is a bit like the 2.4 band.
[1784.74] Curry: And, you know, Frieske and I have done things in 2.4 with very sensitive receivers.
[1791.74] Curry: They had their LR9, LR12, which go in excess of 5K,
[1796.74] Curry: but he seems to be suggesting tens and tens of kilometers,
[1799.74] Curry: which is a whole new ballgame,
[1801.74] Curry: and usually way out of what the 2.4 band can do.
[1806.74] Frank: I'm going to speculate here that maybe they're doing a similar thing
[1811.74] Frank: as the 50 megabit kind of equivalent on the DGI,
[1819.74] Frank: where by using a wider amount of the bandwidth in one go,
[1827.74] Frank: then you should be able to go further because you can use more of it in one go,
[1835.74] Frank: even though you're not having to put the power up.
[1838.74] Frank: So there might be...
[1839.74] Tony: I think I heard the max power is 350 milliwatt on 2.4.

[1920.74] Frank: use the whole thing and just let me fly really far.

[1925.74] Curry: and some of it's going to get through, we hope,
[1927.74] Curry: and that'll be enough.

[1941.74] Frank: but you've put all your 25 milliwatts on that tiny little narrow bit of band,

[1958.74] Frank: from 1 gigahertz to 2 gigahertz, whatever.
