[0.0] Curry: Welcome to Let's Drone Out, the original and best drone themed podcast.
[5.0] Curry: We record the show live on the Thursday night on youtube.com forward slash Let's Drone Out
[10.0] Curry: and our lovely patrons help with the editing costs.
[12.0] (Patrons): These are Wacky Wes, Mikey Dread, Art Faulkner, Carlos Campos.
[19.0] (Patrons): Thank you.
[20.0] Jack: Hello and welcome to tonight's show from Let's Drone Out.
[55.45] Jack: Tonight, Curry Kitten drives a little mini rover by the side of the playground looking like a weirdo.
[63.45] Curry: Are we doing that, are we? Okay.
[67.45] Jack: And tonight, my little Tony vegan sausage passes a test.
[75.45] Jack: Bonjour.
[76.45] SPEAKER_05: Congratulations.
[77.45] Jack: The other night, Andy RC went dogging, as in walking dogs.
[84.45] Jack: Oh dear.
[85.45] Jack: Andrew's not Frank.
[86.45] Jack: He set the whole thing out and is probably going to lose his rag.
[89.45] Jack: Hey.
[91.45] Jack: And someone who's actually with Top Gear, Andrew Lawrence.
[95.45] Jack: Hello.
[97.45] Jack: Very good, Jack.
[98.45] Jack: Let's start the show.
[99.45] AndyRC: It did look like he was about to have a heart attack whilst he was.
[103.45] AndyRC: He's just ran home, haven't you, Jack?
[106.45] Curry: Yeah, I was.
[107.45] Curry: Apologise everybody for making us like.
[110.45] Jack: So I'm very sorry for my tardy, already still stuck at work behaviour.
[116.45] Tony: I do apologise.
[121.45] SPEAKER_05: This is recorded on Guy Faulk's Night 2020 in the UK and therefore there's a lot of fireworks.
[128.45] SPEAKER_05: So that explains that noise.
[130.45] Jack: You probably won't notice because Frank lives in London.
[136.45] Jack: And that's usually the sound of gunfire.
[140.45] Curry: They prefer stabbing at the moment in London.
[142.45] Curry: So there's less gunshots at the moment.
[144.45] Curry: So it'd be a bit of a novelty.
[146.45] SPEAKER_05: Well, no.
[147.45] SPEAKER_05: Gunshots, you can socially distance.
[149.45] SPEAKER_05: Stabbing, not so much.
[150.45] Tony: There's less gunshots.
[151.45] Tony: Tony, you've only been doing it five years.
[156.45] Tony: What a need.
[158.45] Tony: Yeah, right.
[163.45] SPEAKER_05: So if anyone in the UK or abroad has been watching the latest season of Top Gear,
[175.45] SPEAKER_05: you may have noticed a lot of FEV shots in there around a lot of the most interesting things that have been happening in it.
[187.45] SPEAKER_05: And so I have to thank Fraser Steen in the chat for putting out the feelers
[196.45] SPEAKER_05: and finding out who the person was behind all this.
[199.45] SPEAKER_05: And the person behind all that was indeed Andrew Lawrence.
[202.45] SPEAKER_05: Thank you very much for coming on tonight.
[204.45] SPEAKER_05: Pleasure.
[206.45] SPEAKER_05: I think everyone is very, very jealous about both what you've been able to do in terms of, you know,
[217.45] SPEAKER_05: you've been out flying in amazing locations, following crazy things happening,
[224.45] SPEAKER_05: getting your footage up onto BBC One on Top Gear and presumably getting paid for it as well.
[232.45] SPEAKER_05: You've been living the dream there as far as everyone else can see.
[236.45] SPEAKER_05: But I think everyone would be very interested to hear kind of how you got up to that point, really.
[247.45] SPEAKER_05: So first question, I guess, would be how long have you been flying?
[256.45] Andrew Lawrence: I've been flying FPV for about two years now and sort of other drones for probably about five or six.
[266.45] Andrew Lawrence: So just started with the phantoms back then.
[269.45] Andrew Lawrence: It's always been sort of directed towards filming, really.
[274.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then, well, the thing that got me into FPV, I'd say, was I saw, you know, Nick's video and he's flying with a train.
[282.45] Andrew Lawrence: And I think he got in trouble for. And I just thought that was amazing.
[287.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then I just sort of went from there and brought Vortex 230.
[294.45] Andrew Lawrence: The little one that's all the weird electronics built in sort of the frame and board of it.
[300.45] Tony: What edition? Metal Danny edition? What one? Can you remember?
[307.45] Tony: The Mojo, isn't it?
[310.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, the Mojo. Yeah, I think it was the later one.
[314.45] Andrew Lawrence: But no, it just got hooked on there, really.
[319.45] Curry: So what was that like? If your experience was like camera drones, which essentially is sort of pushing a camera around the sky,
[327.45] Curry: very easy going to FPV for the first time, was there a sort of how difficult was the transition
[333.45] Curry: into FPV from flying a camera drone?
[338.45] Andrew Lawrence: It was pretty steep, I think. I remember the first, because I initially got up,
[344.45] Andrew Lawrence: DJI came out with those like horrendous goggles for the Mavi, like the racing ones.
[351.45] Andrew Lawrence: And I got those and tried, first time I tried to fly the Vortex, ended up, it was sort of winter's evening.
[359.45] Andrew Lawrence: So I just tried this with my little brother and it went into the middle of the field.
[363.45] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know if I was on the wrong video channel and it was completely cut.
[369.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then ended up spending a good few hours trying to search for the new drone, really.
[376.45] Curry: How was that before Forrest got talking beepers?
[380.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[383.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, it was definitely very steep sort of learning curve.
[387.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then I don't know, after a few months and I got sort of hang on it,
[393.45] Andrew Lawrence: because there wasn't really many people around where I live or that I knew that did it.
[398.45] Andrew Lawrence: It seems quite like in sort of new novel things.
[403.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then sort of hooked up with Seb and just been messing about flying with him for, I don't know, a year and a half.
[412.45] Tony: Yeah, he's a good flyer, Seb. I've seen some of his YouTube stuff.
[416.45] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, no, no. Yes, Seb's a really nice dude.
[421.45] AndyRC: A question I want to answer because it's coming up a lot. Does anybody watch New Top Gear?
[427.45] AndyRC: The answer is yes. I think it's brilliant. With Paddy and Freddie Flintoff, I think it's better than the Clarkson one.
[436.45] AndyRC: And I know that's sort of like a big thing to say.
[439.45] Tony: Is it all right if I just literally leave?
[443.45] Tony: You need to watch it.
[446.45] Tony: I promise, I feel bad because I haven't watched Top Gear since they left, only because I'm such a fan.
[453.45] Curry: I haven't watched it either, but I was careful to make sure I watched the drone footage.
[457.45] Curry: At least have some context.
[460.45] AndyRC: It is brilliant. The last two series when they've had Paddy and Freddie, it's hilarious.
[466.45] AndyRC: I prefer it to the Clarkson one. It is that much better.
[470.45] AndyRC: So anyone, just go and watch it. It's on the iPlayer.
[474.45] AndyRC: I'm going to go and watch it just because.
[476.45] Tony: But you're only saying that because they're northern and you're northern.
[480.45] Tony: Well, maybe.
[483.45] AndyRC: Right, carry on anyway. Yeah, they tend to watch it.
[487.45] AndyRC: It's really good. It is really good. I was well impressed. Carry on.
[492.45] SPEAKER_05: So, Andrew, how long have you been doing that before Top Gear?
[499.45] SPEAKER_05: Have you been using the F.P.V. stuff, the DJI HD F.P.V. stuff, much in your professional role doing the video work?
[511.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, a few times. Just because I usually film a lot on mountain biking.
[517.45] Andrew Lawrence: I guess it developed a lot more of my sort of filming skills from filming mountain biking with it, really.
[523.45] Andrew Lawrence: So, but there's probably only since lockdown about their HD system.
[530.45] Andrew Lawrence: And before that, I was just on analog before.
[533.45] Andrew Lawrence: So, I don't know.
[537.45] Andrew Lawrence: I probably, I'd say, prefer filming bikes and to-do cars generally, but.
[544.45] SPEAKER_05: How did you get involved with doing the Top Gear stuff?
[549.45] SPEAKER_05: Did they reach out to you or did you reach out to them or was there something?
[553.45] Andrew Lawrence: The Top Gear stuff was because I was doing the sort of drone gimbal on the Inspire anyway.
[561.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then there was just a few instances when they said, well, they flew it once or twice.
[567.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then so the Alton Towers one was actually the first time they, I would say, properly used it.
[573.45] Andrew Lawrence: Which was kind of quite scary.
[576.45] Andrew Lawrence: Fly that first time around.
[579.45] SPEAKER_05: And I think, Kerry, you want to know a bit more about that.
[583.45] Curry: Yeah, because when I saw, I mean, obviously there was no one there, but I saw the coasters were going.
[587.45] Curry: And it was obviously beautifully timed to go sort of through a corkscrew and meet up with the cars and stuff.
[592.45] Curry: Did they make you do like a couple of dry runs before they said, we're not running our coasters as you're flying around.
[597.45] Curry: Did they make you do it first or were they absolutely happy to say, quad versus coaster, coaster will win.
[602.45] Curry: We don't care. Just go ahead.
[604.45] Andrew Lawrence: Because they're quite strict on all the health and safety of Alton Towers.
[609.45] Andrew Lawrence: So there was a lot of, obviously, you've got to do all the risk assessments and sort of method statements beforehand to say, how are you going to be flying, et cetera, et cetera.
[622.45] Andrew Lawrence: So it was, I don't know, felt like I had to fly quite tame, really.
[628.45] Andrew Lawrence: But we, because Steph actually came and was the spot for me at Alton Towers.
[636.45] Andrew Lawrence: And a lot, probably the hardest thing was literally, especially with Smiler, just timing the roller coasters and getting to know when they'd be at a point where you could obviously,
[650.45] Andrew Lawrence: either fly past them or with them and then meet up with a car.
[655.45] Andrew Lawrence: So probably spent, I don't know, a good hour or something just playing with the roller coasters to know the exact timings of them, which is actually really tricky.
[670.45] Curry: So how many, how many lipos do you get with when you're going to be like, okay, we're going to be flying for a day here.
[675.45] Curry: What if you just got like a boot full of them so you can carry on?
[680.45] Andrew Lawrence: No, I usually think how many, like maybe between six and ten and it's got two large, low-field charging batteries.
[694.45] Andrew Lawrence: Just as soon as one's done, I'd just put it on charge, obviously.
[698.45] Tony: Whack it on 20 amps, it'd be all right.
[702.45] Andrew Lawrence: But it's like, there's, it's strange with Top Gear, obviously there's a lot of amazing opportunities, but it sort of comes with a lot of stress as well.
[713.45] Andrew Lawrence: It's not all sort of just fun and games, like we're chaperoned around with one of the Alton Towers staff the whole time.
[723.45] Andrew Lawrence: And yeah, it's not very, there's no really messing about, if you know what I mean.
[730.45] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because I imagine, yeah, they can't really be doing with horseplay behind the camera.
[737.45] Andrew Lawrence: No, no, no.
[740.45] Andrew Lawrence: Like, there's obviously, you do have your good fun, but a lot of the time, because it's such tight schedules and you've probably only got one chance most of the time, it does get quite serious.
[752.45] Andrew Lawrence: A bit of pressure on that.
[754.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[755.45] SPEAKER_05: Especially after the presenters keep wiping out cars and costing budget that way.
[762.45] SPEAKER_05: But do you, like, is there anything, because you were saying, like, it can be a bit stressful because it's like quite a high pressure thing.
[770.45] SPEAKER_05: Is there a shot that kind of sticks in your mind as being like, that was the hardest one to get, or the toughest one to keep?
[782.45] Andrew Lawrence: The ones through Smiler are actually quite tricky, just because when you go out flying, usually, you know, there's a structure to what you're going to fly around.
[796.45] Andrew Lawrence: But with Smiler, there seems like really organic and just all over the place.
[800.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then because there's two roller coasters going at the same time to know exactly where they're going to be.
[805.45] Andrew Lawrence: And because some of the gaps are quite small, even to fly with the drone.
[811.45] Andrew Lawrence: And yeah, I would say that was one of the more, like, trickiest technical ways, I guess.
[817.45] Andrew Lawrence: It looks like massive holes, but when your hands are shaking a little bit, you've only got one go to do it.
[824.45] Andrew Lawrence: It seems a lot smaller.
[827.45] Curry: So I guess what you're saying, Andrew, is, yeah, it's good fun.
[830.45] Curry: But there's a bit of a difference between work flying and just messing around in a field with mates where you have to take it a lot more seriously.
[838.45] Curry: And it's not quite as much fun as just rolling up to Orton Towers and saying, let's just blast around all the coasters when we feel like it.
[846.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. So like, because I do film as like my main job and half the time I might be flying, but it just doesn't feel like actually go out and fly and have fun.
[859.45] Andrew Lawrence: You know, most of the time it feels like you come back from a job and you just want to just go out and make a field.
[866.45] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know, mess around with your mates.
[868.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, there's no sort of consequences or anything then, as well as obviously when you're doing it on a film sale or whatever.
[876.45] Andrew Lawrence: It's not quite as fun, I guess. But you just get amazing opportunities and just get to go some cool places, really.
[884.45] Andrew Lawrence: That's why I'd say it. Generally, like, doing any mountain biking stuff, because there's only probably a few of you that are out filming and you're just with your mates just in a cool environment where a mountain or a forest or something.
[896.45] Andrew Lawrence: This is a lot more chilled. Do you ride? Yeah. Recently, I did a lot when I was younger and I've recently just brought an e-bike.
[907.45] Andrew Lawrence: So I'm just getting back into it again. Cheater then.
[911.45] SPEAKER_05: Where's Andrew when we need you? You're a cheater then. You're a cheater. E-bike cheater.
[916.45] Tony: That e-bike looks amazing. No, e-bikes are the best.
[920.45] Tony: Look, I'm not getting one until I'm 50. Who's got an owl going on in the back?
[925.45] Tony: That might be, I think.
[928.45] Tony: Just here and there every couple of minutes.
[931.45] Curry: No, this is definitely in the country. Everyone else has got explosions. He's got an owl.
[938.45] Andrew Lawrence: If it was cheating, it would, like, run a walk instead of cycling.
[942.45] Tony: Yeah, yeah, I get it. I'm not doing it until I'm 50, I'm telling you.
[948.45] Andrew Lawrence: Going uphill and having as much fun as going down.
[952.45] Tony: I know, I know. When they pass me, I'm trying to kick them off, like, get off.
[959.45] AndyRC: So, Andrew, have you worked with Top Gear for a while and it's just because we're noticing the drone footage now that that's a recent thing
[968.45] AndyRC: and you've actually worked with them doing general drone stuff for a while or is it just a series?
[976.45] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, probably worked with them for, I don't know, over a year or something before I started doing the FPV stuff.
[982.45] Andrew Lawrence: Brilliant.
[985.45] SPEAKER_05: There was a question in the chat from Gabe Colon who was asking, how big is the aerial camera team for the production?
[994.45] SPEAKER_05: Are you the man doing everything in terms of the drones or is there a group of you?
[1001.45] Andrew Lawrence: I'd say probably 90% of the time, it's just me and with one of my mates called Lap Park and he would be usually flying the Inspire.
[1013.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then, obviously, I'd be doing the gimbal. That's it, really.
[1018.45] AndyRC: So, it's a two-person, one flies, the other does the camera part. Interesting. Very cool.
[1026.45] Andrew Lawrence: And then, I don't know, a lot of the time with the FPV stuff, I'd say, Lek might only be one man up and then I'd do one or two shots on the FPV.
[1036.45] Andrew Lawrence: Sometimes it's not purely, you're just here to do FPV. So, if there's any time at the end, mostly, we might be able to get a shot or something like that.
[1047.45] AndyRC: We've got a question from Win Davis here. It says, you've done loads of creative clips on YouTube, what is your favourite?
[1063.98] AndyRC: And have you got your YouTube channel as well? What's your handle on YouTube?
[1068.98] Andrew Lawrence: I don't actually know that. I don't really upload to YouTube very often. I just post on Instagram, to be honest.
[1078.98] SPEAKER_05: Where can people find you on Instagram?
[1080.98] Andrew Lawrence: Andrew J. Lawrence.
[1082.98] AndyRC: There you go.
[1084.98] AndyRC: You're going to have a load of idiots following you very shortly.
[1088.98] Tony: We'll probably stick your thingy in the link of this video.
[1094.98] Tony: I think so.
[1096.98] SPEAKER_05: Dave Story said he thought that the Alipali was the best location.
[1103.98] SPEAKER_05: And that did look quite fun, just kind of diving out around the park in front of Alipali, then going through in and then into the wall of death that they had set up.
[1116.98] SPEAKER_05: Did you have fun doing that one? What is this? It's all kind of like...
[1120.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, no, that wasn't too bad.
[1123.98] Andrew Lawrence: To be honest, it's just sort of, to do with production, they thought that it'd probably film all that within an hour.
[1133.98] Andrew Lawrence: But that would have no way happened just because of the sort of logistics.
[1139.98] Andrew Lawrence: So actually getting the hall free of clutter was an absolute nightmare.
[1146.98] Andrew Lawrence: So actually, you probably only had, I think it was between 20, maybe 15 minutes to film inside, which is not...
[1155.98] Andrew Lawrence: It's literally, I don't know, maybe two packs, three packs at most.
[1161.98] SPEAKER_05: Definitely going to run the operation then.
[1164.98] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, it is all the time.
[1166.98] Andrew Lawrence: With top gear, it's usually just try and get a shot.
[1169.98] Andrew Lawrence: That's the sort of mindset, to be honest.
[1172.98] Andrew Lawrence: It's not like, oh, I really want to compose something here. It doesn't really work like that.
[1176.98] AndyRC: I did spot a crash, actually, I think, in one of them.
[1180.98] AndyRC: I can't remember. What was that? The Alton Towers one. Just remember...
[1185.98] SPEAKER_05: Going round the rally track with the guys on the roof.
[1190.98] Curry: Ah, yes. Oh, that was that one.
[1192.98] Curry: On to another question. I forgot who it is. It's earlier in the questions about, are there many crashes when you're trying to get this FPV stuff?
[1201.98] Andrew Lawrence: Weirdly, they always just want you to fly the most, I don't know, difficult, like that was Chris.
[1210.98] Andrew Lawrence: Was it Freddie on the top of the car?
[1213.98] Andrew Lawrence: Chris Harris.
[1215.98] AndyRC: Chris Harris had a very popular YouTube channel that not a lot of people know about.
[1219.98] AndyRC: I watched him on Joe Rogan years ago. He was, you know, he's a real character on Top Gear.
[1226.98] AndyRC: You guys, I'm trying to get you to watch it all. It's great.
[1229.98] Tony: All right. No, for now, we might not.
[1231.98] AndyRC: Bring the Grand Tour back anyway.
[1233.98] Tony: That's crap.
[1235.98] AndyRC: No, that's the real Top Gear.
[1237.98] AndyRC: Sorry, Andrew. Cut you off.
[1240.98] AndyRC: Oh, no, that's all good.
[1242.98] AndyRC: Crashes were...
[1243.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[1245.98] Andrew Lawrence: That one was because we thought they just did like a sort of site a lap and he was probably saying, no, they'll do about 30, 40 miles an hour.
[1255.98] Andrew Lawrence: But then Chris decided to absolutely gun it and he was probably doing like 60 or 70.
[1262.98] Andrew Lawrence: And obviously when you're in a...
[1266.98] Jack: Are you on like success and stuff to keep up with that?
[1270.98] Jack: We'll get into that.
[1272.98] Tony: Let me finish this one first.
[1274.98] Tony: Come on. Stop interrupting.
[1276.98] Andrew Lawrence: And it was just because it was a, you know, like a tree lined road and you're just trying to obviously go from just coming into it.
[1286.98] Andrew Lawrence: It is quite blind and then just giving it sort of full throttle.
[1291.98] Andrew Lawrence: And then just, I don't know, just a random branch obviously just clipped in and just went down.
[1296.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[1297.98] Andrew Lawrence: Otherwise, no.
[1300.98] Andrew Lawrence: All the towers are hit one of the safety nets above the roller coaster.
[1305.98] Andrew Lawrence: That's about it, really.
[1307.98] SPEAKER_05: Did you need a big ladder to get it down like every time someone crashes into the nets at Pop'em?
[1312.98] Andrew Lawrence: Kind of. I think it's usually for like catching people's phones and everything.
[1317.98] Andrew Lawrence: But generally you kind of fly in it.
[1322.98] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know.
[1323.98] Andrew Lawrence: Probably 50% of how you can fly just to make sure that you get a shot, I guess.
[1329.98] AndyRC: One thing I did notice is that you never see the drones in shot, yet you really should do.
[1335.98] AndyRC: So this is going to break some of the magic, but I'm guessing that some of that is staged and they do it twice, do it two or three times.
[1344.98] AndyRC: Am I in the wrong area there?
[1347.98] AndyRC: But I'm like, hang on, the drone was flying there and then it cuts to a shot and I'm like, where did the drone go?
[1352.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. Sometimes I paint them out.
[1355.98] AndyRC: Ah, OK.
[1357.98] Andrew Lawrence: And then on maybe certain challenges, they would get the pro drivers to do like a lap of whatever after.
[1367.98] AndyRC: Pro drivers? Whoa.
[1370.98] Tony: Why do we do it in a way?
[1372.98] Tony: It's all coming.
[1373.98] Tony: All this smoke and mirrors.
[1375.98] Tony: Watch this.
[1376.98] Tony: You know, they're great.
[1377.98] Tony: You mean Paddy McGinnis?
[1379.98] Tony: I can't draw sideways.
[1381.98] AndyRC: Around Orton Towers.
[1384.98] Tony: Wow.
[1386.98] Tony: What rigs, what rigs are you flying at the moment then?
[1391.98] Andrew Lawrence: Kind of literally just built some new ones.
[1395.98] Andrew Lawrence: This is like the one that I've been filming with recently.
[1399.98] Andrew Lawrence: That's the project or 399 project Super G.
[1404.98] Andrew Lawrence: The success was on camera.
[1407.98] Andrew Lawrence: The sort of HD FX motors.
[1411.98] Tony: I recently done a chase of a mountain biker.
[1415.98] Tony: Yeah.
[1416.98] Tony: And wish I had a less degree angle.
[1419.98] Tony: If you've got something on there, you can just adjust the GoPro angle when you get to the shoot.
[1426.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. So the well, this is the old.
[1428.98] Andrew Lawrence: This would have been one of the ones that would have flown for
[1432.98] Andrew Lawrence: like most top gear.
[1435.98] Andrew Lawrence: These are just like the source ones.
[1437.98] Andrew Lawrence: And then beforehand, I had the Shen Drones Etubot frame,
[1443.98] Andrew Lawrence: which had obviously the GoPro sort of out front.
[1446.98] Andrew Lawrence: And you could change the angle.
[1448.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[1449.98] Tony: So you can just do it on the fly.
[1451.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah. So it's and like from that got this before I had a 3D printed
[1458.98] Andrew Lawrence: Seb sort of went to town and design that mount for.
[1463.98] Andrew Lawrence: So you could just use them on the source ones just because they're sort of a symmetrical frame
[1468.98] Andrew Lawrence: and where the issue boards are a little bit more tricky to work on.
[1472.98] Andrew Lawrence: Whereas source ones just super easy.
[1474.98] Tony: I like that idea because when I was chasing the mountain biker,
[1479.98] Tony: my camera angle was too much as I wish I had a less degree.
[1486.98] Tony: So something like that would be a good idea to just so you can change it with the conditions you're at or in at that particular time.
[1494.98] Andrew Lawrence: Definitely.
[1495.98] Andrew Lawrence: But since that's obviously that's quite, I don't know, comes quite heavy when you do all that stuff.
[1501.98] Andrew Lawrence: So I've sort of gone back to this is like more standard five inch.
[1505.98] Andrew Lawrence: There's been experimenting more with having a different camera angle to like the angle of the GoPro for like certain types of filming.
[1512.98] AndyRC: Yeah.
[1514.98] AndyRC: Cool.
[1515.98] AndyRC: So I spotted the DJI system in there.
[1519.98] AndyRC: Is that the go to system for doing professional stuff like that?
[1523.98] AndyRC: The HD or is it just because that's what you're used to from a inspired moving on to that sort of thing?
[1531.98] Andrew Lawrence: No.
[1533.98] Andrew Lawrence: I'd say the main thing is just like the clarity of the image to see a car coming from quite far away
[1542.98] Andrew Lawrence: or knowing when they've set off is just a massive bonus for like timing and like little things like that.
[1548.98] Andrew Lawrence: Whereas, yeah, forehand analog was fine for that, to be honest.
[1555.98] Tony: So probably better performance around Orton Towers and all that metal.
[1561.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, definitely in some environments like I don't know Orton Towers.
[1565.98] Andrew Lawrence: And even in Ali Pali, I think it would probably be horrendous in analog, to be honest.
[1571.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[1572.98] SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
[1573.98] SPEAKER_05: I remember that bit.
[1574.98] SPEAKER_05: Ali Pali was was a tricky one when they were doing a DRL there a few years ago.
[1580.98] SPEAKER_05: I think the guys that went up and scout stitch, I think might have been Brett and Warren or something.
[1588.98] SPEAKER_05: A couple of guys in the community anyway.
[1591.98] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they found that really tricky to work out how best to deal with that.
[1596.98] SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, they worked out, but I can imagine having a system that's a bit more.
[1605.98] AndyRC: Reliable.
[1606.98] AndyRC: Yeah.
[1607.98] AndyRC: Picture wise.
[1610.98] AndyRC: That's a good question.
[1611.98] Curry: This question up from Aris about do you use the GDI smart controller so you can plug an HDMI cable in and the director can see stuff.
[1619.98] Curry: But given what you said about we just try and get the shot, I'm guessing probably not.
[1623.98] Curry: It's my guess.
[1624.98] Curry: You're just filming and you're like, there you go.
[1626.98] Curry: That's what I got.
[1627.98] Curry: And the editor comes up and tries to fix it all later.
[1631.98] Andrew Lawrence: Especially on the top gear, there's never usually a director standing over your shoulder.
[1635.98] Andrew Lawrence: They'd be off usually with sort of the main cameras, directing that stuff.
[1642.98] Andrew Lawrence: And we're just sort of left our own devices a lot of the time.
[1645.98] Andrew Lawrence: Well, I tried to use it for Ali Pally, but then every time I armed the quad, the feed would just cut.
[1651.98] Andrew Lawrence: So I'm just having bothered using to try to use smart controllers again, to be honest.
[1657.98] SPEAKER_05: Interesting.
[1674.98] SPEAKER_05: All thanks to our Patreons.
[1676.98] SPEAKER_05: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits.
[1679.98] SPEAKER_05: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out.
[1685.98] SPEAKER_05: I'm thinking maybe it's worth going for a bit of a rundown of where kind of the FPV shots were used.
[1691.98] SPEAKER_05: So there was like I said, there was the autumn towers.
[1694.98] SPEAKER_05: There was the guys on top of the roof being driven around the sort of rally track through the forest and that.
[1703.98] AndyRC: There was a few earlier ones as well, I believe, but I just hadn't registered at that point.
[1713.98] AndyRC: But I think the first two episodes had like definitely you can always tell because I take it using real steady.
[1721.98] AndyRC: You can always tell when that's been used.
[1724.98] AndyRC: And there was a couple other ones as well.
[1726.98] AndyRC: I'm not sure, Andrew, if you can fill in the rest where they were used.
[1731.98] Andrew Lawrence: We've done.
[1733.98] Andrew Lawrence: There was all the stuff in North Wales.
[1737.98] Andrew Lawrence: There was Alton Towers.
[1740.98] Andrew Lawrence: Wall of death at Ali Pali.
[1742.98] Andrew Lawrence: And then just what I think maybe he was one or two shots in the souls.
[1748.98] Andrew Lawrence: We want with Mr. Imba.
[1751.98] SPEAKER_05: Yes, I was very jealous about that, having seen loads of stuff about Imba.
[1758.98] SPEAKER_05: And then to just go like flying around it while the tanks and things going around.
[1764.98] Andrew Lawrence: I actually did a lot of filming with the tanks and loads of other shots, but none of them made it.
[1773.98] Tony: Are you allowed to keep that stuff for yourself?
[1776.98] Tony: Yeah, I think so.
[1777.98] Andrew Lawrence: Cool.
[1779.98] SPEAKER_05: We request that you find out whether you do have a YouTube channel and post it up there and let us know because we want to see.
[1790.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, no, it was it was crazy like filming the tanks.
[1793.98] Andrew Lawrence: It was just like chaos because there was smoke grenade and everything going off.
[1797.98] Andrew Lawrence: But yes, I don't know.
[1799.98] Andrew Lawrence: Obviously, there's like a lot of the crew about as well.
[1802.98] Andrew Lawrence: So you kind of always have to bear that in the back of your mind.
[1806.98] Andrew Lawrence: You can't just like just rip round like a crazy.
[1811.98] Tony: It's always different when you're filming for a company, isn't it?
[1815.98] Tony: It's like literally stressful and kind of fun.
[1820.98] Tony: And when you go home and rip with your friends, that's the fun bit.
[1825.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, it's just strange when it does become more of a job than a hobby, I guess.
[1833.98] AndyRC: Yeah, I can relate.
[1836.98] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I'm much rather disco flying with my mates somewhere.
[1839.98] Andrew Lawrence: Like I said, I've been to Wales or I don't know, like to go to the castle.
[1845.98] Andrew Lawrence: We win another few laps up there.
[1850.23] AndyRC: That's been used for I'm a celebrity now at the castle.
[1853.23] AndyRC: Isn't it the last week?
[1855.23] AndyRC: Chucked out.
[1856.23] AndyRC: Yeah.
[1857.23] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[1858.23] Andrew Lawrence: I think we're going to film some of the helis launching tomorrow to take the celebs.
[1864.23] Andrew Lawrence: Wow.
[1867.23] AndyRC: That should be cool.
[1869.23] AndyRC: That is a cool job.
[1871.23] AndyRC: I think.
[1872.23] AndyRC: Yeah, I think people have the understanding there are maybe like ants and add in a newspaper and it's a little bit more than that, isn't it?
[1880.23] AndyRC: So I think it's important to get that out there that it's not just that clearly.
[1884.23] AndyRC: It's it's part of your job and filming is very much your job.
[1890.23] AndyRC: You know, it's not just you were like the luckiest FPV pilot that just bought a load of stuff and said, oh, I can fly one of those kind of things.
[1900.23] AndyRC: So, yeah, that's pretty cool.
[1902.23] AndyRC: Something I wanted to ask is like surrounding like we already touched on a real steady go and stuff like that.
[1910.23] AndyRC: But I take it they have.
[1913.23] AndyRC: Do they ask for stuff in a particular format, you know, for it to work with that sort of stuff or is it just basically here is the file with real steady go put over the top of it and just do what you want with it kind of thing in 1080p?
[1928.23] AndyRC: Or does it have to be like super high def or whatever the formats?
[1936.23] Andrew Lawrence: It completely depends on the production.
[1939.23] Andrew Lawrence: Like most of the time on Top Gear you'd film 4K 25p most of the time.
[1946.23] Andrew Lawrence: You might do a little bit of slow mo once in a blue moon, but it's usually 4K.
[1951.23] Andrew Lawrence: Whereas I was doing some like nature stuff the other day when they shot out in 4K 30 because they might want to slow down a tiny bit to give it a bit more of a floaty feeling.
[1965.23] Andrew Lawrence: But yeah, it's usually always in the mind to go into a 25p timeline.
[1971.23] AndyRC: And is it your favorite to use real steady go over the latest like say GoPro just released HyperSmooth 3?
[1983.23] AndyRC: Is it better?
[1985.23] AndyRC: Because if I'm trying to, obviously I'm not filming for Top Gear, but if I'm just trying to get a decent shot, I'll stick HyperSmooth on.
[1994.23] AndyRC: Does it okay?
[1995.23] AndyRC: I imagine when you're doing professional filming, what is it that real steady gives you that the other stuff can't?
[2004.23] Andrew Lawrence: I think the main thing is that it kind of doesn't look like the GoPro that everyone's really impressed about.
[2011.23] Andrew Lawrence: Just the way it dewarps the footage and obviously, well, I always have it set on completely manual on the GoPro.
[2019.23] Andrew Lawrence: So it's not ever fluctuating exposure, which I think obviously with a lot of GoPro footage probably doesn't make it look as professional.
[2030.23] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, sometimes use HyperSmooth for doing different shots though.
[2035.23] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[2037.23] Andrew Lawrence: Like if you want a really sort of wide angle view of SuperView, maybe use HyperSmooth.
[2046.23] AndyRC: Yeah, yeah, sure. We've been on top.
[2050.23] AndyRC: Jack!
[2053.23] AndyRC: Wake Jack up to say some knob jokes.
[2056.23] Curry: I've never thought about that.
[2057.23] Curry: That's a really interesting point about making the GoPro footage look like it's not a GoPro.
[2061.23] Curry: Yeah, yeah.
[2062.23] Curry: So there's more continuity between the different shots. It sort of makes sense now.
[2065.23] Curry: Really interesting.
[2066.23] Curry: Whereas we kind of want to make stuff look like it's...
[2071.23] Curry: Oh, what's that mode you're not allowed to talk about, Andy?
[2073.23] Curry: SuperView.
[2074.23] Curry: SuperView is loved because it makes everything look faster as it all flies past the edges, doesn't it?
[2081.23] Curry: It's kind of like you want to unwrap that back to normal cameras.
[2086.23] AndyRC: The thing that we've talked about on this show is like real steady go doesn't always work.
[2092.23] AndyRC: It doesn't favor the freestyle.
[2094.23] AndyRC: So I wondered if ever you've taken a shot and then stuck it in real steady go and thought,
[2099.23] AndyRC: ah, I wish I used HyperSmooth because it hasn't stabilized that bit.
[2103.23] AndyRC: Or do you not really have that problem because you've got a really decent setup rig for it kind of thing?
[2112.23] Andrew Lawrence: I usually tune the rigs for filming.
[2114.23] Andrew Lawrence: So they're probably got a bit... I quite like the feel of quad when it's probably on the limit, I guess.
[2123.23] Andrew Lawrence: And obviously I'd keep reviewing the footage with the tune.
[2127.23] Andrew Lawrence: So I guess it is kind of... I don't know, tuned for filming generally.
[2135.23] AndyRC: So it's pretty reliable.
[2137.23] AndyRC: You know when you've done a shot, you can pretty much guarantee when I stick real steady over the top that it's going to work.
[2144.23] AndyRC: Because when I tune it, it's like all shaky sometimes if my rigs got too...
[2150.23] AndyRC: And if you use the Hero 6, they say it's more of a guarantee.
[2155.23] AndyRC: But if you're trying with the 5 or the 7 or... I think the 8 works with real steady.
[2162.23] AndyRC: But it just seems to be a bit hit and miss when I've tried to use it.
[2167.23] Andrew Lawrence: I think it was in the early days of real steady.
[2170.23] Andrew Lawrence: But I generally usually film with the 6, maybe the 8 and sometimes the 7.
[2179.23] Andrew Lawrence: I usually use them as 7 for a hyper-smooth.
[2185.23] Andrew Lawrence: No, like most of the time now...
[2187.23] Andrew Lawrence: The thing is, most of the time when you're filming, you're not really doing that many crazy moves.
[2192.23] Andrew Lawrence: You're doing something quite chill, to be honest.
[2196.23] AndyRC: Yeah, yeah. So it's very rare. You're doing freestyle menus and stuff.
[2201.23] Tony: It's funny, isn't it? Do you remember flying without a hyper-smooth?
[2205.23] Tony: I remember flying stuff, trying to get really good shots without a hyper-smooth and stuff.
[2213.23] Tony: You adjust your flying to try to make it really, really smooth.
[2218.23] Curry: Do you remember mounting the GoPro and all the little...
[2220.23] Curry: Let's try a foam block and let's try the different entity of foam to mount it this time.
[2225.23] Curry: Do you remember going back a couple of years that had the soft mounting the motors
[2231.23] Curry: and then separating the frame and the motors from the other thing
[2235.23] Curry: and all sorts of things we've gone through?
[2238.23] Tony: I've got a mic now, aren't we? Really?
[2241.23] Tony: Too easy.
[2243.23] Tony: Do you use any CineDrains? Any CineWoop stuff?
[2248.23] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I've got some of the Naked GoPros. I've got some CineRacks.
[2258.23] Andrew Lawrence: A very dirty one.
[2260.23] Andrew Lawrence: You've got CineRack.
[2262.23] Tony: Oh, yeah, cool. Oh, CineRack. That's cool, isn't it? Yeah.
[2265.23] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, got one of those.
[2267.23] Andrew Lawrence: You've got some of these that are the bane of your life.
[2277.76] Tony: Yes, I'm interested in putting that at the Beta 85.
[2283.76] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I've got... That's a 95.
[2286.76] Andrew Lawrence: I've got the 85.
[2289.76] Tony: What's the best one? What's the best one that you like flying, the 85 or 95?
[2296.01] Andrew Lawrence: 95, it's got a bit more power. I think it's just too much.
[2300.01] Tony: Why do you think I live your life?
[2303.01] Tony: Because I'm literally all right.
[2305.01] Andrew Lawrence: They just break all the time and just to change the GoPro set.
[2311.01] Andrew Lawrence: This is an absolute nightmare.
[2314.01] AndyRC: Because it's naked.
[2316.01] AndyRC: Well, you have to, if you want to get the screen in there,
[2319.01] AndyRC: there's two little tabs that you have to press and use the screen.
[2323.01] AndyRC: Just yank on it, Andy. It's just coming out. It's fine.
[2326.01] AndyRC: Yeah, I did that. I broke it.
[2328.01] Tony: Can't you use the Wi-Fi module with the Naked Heroes?
[2335.01] Tony: Yeah, you can. You can do that too, yeah.
[2339.01] Tony: I know the 95's are a little bit more powerful than the 85's.
[2344.01] SPEAKER_05: Tony King asked, did you do any footage at Blackpool with the ice cream van?
[2352.01] Andrew Lawrence: I didn't on that one. I did Salisbury, but I was busy for the Blackpool shoot.
[2361.01] SPEAKER_05: I'm trying to think. They went out to the Cyprus.
[2367.01] SPEAKER_05: Was there any FPV footage on that one?
[2372.01] Andrew Lawrence: I think Skydynamic did drone shots on that one.
[2379.01] AndyRC: Yeah, I was going to say there were drone shots for sure.
[2382.01] AndyRC: The Cyprus was the first one, wasn't it?
[2384.01] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, that was filmed quite a long time ago, no?
[2389.32] AndyRC: Yeah, pre-pandemic, obviously.
[2392.32] SPEAKER_05: And then the one in North Wales, was that where they were in the quarry with the zipline?
[2398.32] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, yeah.
[2400.32] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that looks like...
[2404.32] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, it was like epic lighting for it.
[2409.32] SPEAKER_05: I seem to remember that you were chasing down with the guy on the zipline.
[2415.32] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, that was, I don't know, it was actually really sketchy because obviously you can't really see the cables
[2424.32] Andrew Lawrence: and you're looking up at someone above you and then obviously they're accelerating away
[2430.32] Andrew Lawrence: and you can't go sort of up and with the cables and it was just like a bit hairy really.
[2439.32] Andrew Lawrence: It looks cool.
[2441.32] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, no, it was much more fun filming the cars than it was as it would like to be honest on that one.
[2451.34] SPEAKER_05: What else have we got? Have we got any other questions in the chat?
[2457.34] Curry: I was going to ask about what DJI FPV is obviously used for your FPV.
[2463.34] Curry: What about your control signal? Is that DJI or is it crossfire or what are you using?
[2467.34] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I just use crossfire.
[2470.34] Curry: Okay, are you thinking about going over to, what's that new one I can never say?
[2475.34] Curry: The new CVS one?
[2477.34] Curry: Yeah, so you've got a bit more bandwidth there or I guess it doesn't matter.
[2481.34] Curry: You'll be anyone there with a 968.
[2483.34] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I'm kind of tempted to see what it's like for flying, but probably just stick with crossfire
[2490.34] Andrew Lawrence: and just because I've got so many quads on crossfire, it becomes quite expensive to swap over.
[2495.34] Andrew Lawrence: Makes sense.
[2497.34] AndyRC: Tony wants to get into this sort of thing, don't you, Tony?
[2501.34] Tony: I've done a few things.
[2504.34] Tony: In fact, can you mention...
[2506.34] SPEAKER_05: I crashed into a TV.
[2508.34] Tony: I crashed into a TV and we were allocated two TVs that day, so I only got one, so I was all right.
[2516.34] Tony: Yeah, I've done stuff before. I've done the Argos over and I've done a few other things.
[2521.34] Tony: I've done a shoot for Specialized Mountain Bikes.
[2526.34] Tony: Yeah, I'm really, really interested because I want to do this as, you know, a part-time-ish job.
[2535.34] Tony: Little fly donor.
[2537.34] Tony: Yeah, I enjoy doing it because it's one of the hobbies that I love the best, flying.
[2545.34] Tony: But yeah, the pressure of turning up and doing stuff is the worst bit for me.
[2551.34] Tony: It's just like, oh my God, do you want this? I don't know if I can do that. Let me try it about 10,000 times.
[2557.34] Curry: I suppose another thing to ask Andrew about, although it sounds like good fun turning up and flying in places,
[2562.34] Curry: what's the travel like? Because it sounds like you're going almost constantly here and there and flying.
[2569.34] Curry: Are you away from home a lot or are you getting back every day or what's the situation?
[2575.34] AndyRC: Oh, it's like we lost him.
[2577.34] AndyRC: Oh, no.
[2579.34] Tony: Well, it wouldn't be LDO if we didn't lose someone or something went wrong with it.
[2586.34] Curry: That's pretty true.
[2587.34] Curry: Your little city loop looks a little bit like you've got EDFs on it with that many blades there, Tony.
[2594.34] Tony: Well, I asked because I don't have a Banggood account and I knew Win did and Win sent me some props.
[2605.34] Tony: I've yet to test it yet, but I've got the five bladed props to test on the old city loop.
[2613.34] Tony: So I'm looking forward to testing that back to Win.
[2616.34] Tony: That's what it's for.
[2618.34] Tony: I've been studying, so I've not been able to do anything.
[2623.34] Tony: I've been literally going to work and coming home and studying and that's it.
[2627.34] Tony: But, yeah, thanks Win for sending them out.
[2630.34] Tony: I text him and literally I just said, oh, I got this and he was like, yeah, I got that.
[2636.34] Tony: And he sent it and it was there the next day.
[2639.34] Tony: So, good lad.
[2642.34] AndyRC: Yeah, that's my friend Phil doing.
[2644.34] AndyRC: It's not my doing.
[2645.34] AndyRC: I held the camera.
[2646.34] AndyRC: Phil did all the work with that one.
[2648.34] SPEAKER_05: He says Andy RC's video with the cardboard wing was awesome.
[2652.34] Tony: I literally don't think we should say his real name anymore.
[2656.34] Tony: His name needs to be Wilson.
[2660.34] Curry: It only makes sense once you explain it and if people are old enough to remember it.
[2664.34] Tony: Yeah, you've got to be old and have watched home improvement from the 1980s probably.
[2670.34] AndyRC: Before Bolsa was attainable, everything was cardboard.
[2674.34] AndyRC: So, like, that's like there's nothing new to Phil there.
[2677.34] AndyRC: He's like an expert, you know, with the old cardboard.
[2683.34] AndyRC: Yeah, I didn't.
[2685.34] Tony: Keep up the good work with your days out, Andy.
[2692.34] Tony: I'm really enjoying watching these videos.
[2695.34] AndyRC: Yeah, Phil was my mentor.
[2697.34] AndyRC: He taught me early 90s.
[2699.34] AndyRC: Yeah, he put me through my A and B test.
[2703.34] AndyRC: And the next one I've done with Phil is the best best experience I've ever had in my next video.
[2711.34] AndyRC: I was absolutely speechless what Phil managed to achieve.
[2715.34] AndyRC: So that's that's a good one to look forward to.
[2721.62] AndyRC: Tony, are you going to talk about what you've been up to or not?
[2729.86] Tony: I've been studying.
[2731.86] SPEAKER_05: Maybe you can save it for a few weeks time when on the 26th of November we will have Robin FPV from the chat on the show.
[2745.86] SPEAKER_05: Maybe you can talk about it then.
[2747.86] AndyRC: I just thought it went into today's theme a little bit, maybe, but no, never mind.
[2753.86] Curry: Give it away there, Andy.
[2755.86] AndyRC: No, no, it's not.
[2757.86] AndyRC: What? Tony on top gear.
[2762.86] AndyRC: Yeah, no.
[2764.86] AndyRC: Come on, Jack.
[2765.86] AndyRC: Speak to us.
[2766.86] AndyRC: How are you doing, man?
[2768.86] AndyRC: Unmute yourself.
[2769.86] AndyRC: Reveal yourself.
[2771.86] AndyRC: Yeah, yeah.
[2772.86] AndyRC: I'm all right.
[2774.86] AndyRC: Looks like we've got knackered.
[2776.86] AndyRC: He's been knackered.
[2778.86] Curry: Coming back.
[2779.86] AndyRC: Coming back.
[2780.86] AndyRC: Maybe he's trying.
[2781.86] AndyRC: Let me go.
[2782.86] AndyRC: Hey.
[2784.86] Andrew Lawrence: Sorry, guys.
[2785.86] Andrew Lawrence: No problem.
[2787.86] Andrew Lawrence: That's all right.
[2788.86] Andrew Lawrence: My question.
[2789.86] Tony: We just know you're from up north and you've got owls in the background.
[2796.86] Curry: I was asking about the glamour of flying, but is there a lot of logistics with all the travelling and stuff you have to do?
[2804.86] Curry: Are you away a lot to do this sort of career?
[2808.86] Andrew Lawrence: Generally, for lockdown, you're probably away, I don't know, at least three times a month in foreign countries, different foreign countries.
[2819.86] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, not really at home that often, but obviously, because of all the COVID, they've actually been working in the UK a lot more, which is kind of nice.
[2829.86] AndyRC: So it sounds like, I mean, we've brought you here because of Top Gear, but it sounds like you do a lot of other things that we're not aware of.
[2838.86] AndyRC: Are you allowed to say where this drone footage gets used elsewhere in other programmes?
[2843.86] AndyRC: I mean, you mentioned abroad and things.
[2848.86] Andrew Lawrence: You do a lot of mountain biking abroad, sort of things for F1.
[2857.86] Andrew Lawrence: F1?
[2859.86] Andrew Lawrence: Wow.
[2861.86] Andrew Lawrence: Did some stuff for BBC Nature the other day.
[2869.18] Andrew Lawrence: Obviously, that was in the UK.
[2871.18] Tony: Were you herding owls?
[2873.18] Andrew Lawrence: No, it's different things, really.
[2875.18] Tony: Were you herding owls into your garden with a garden?
[2878.18] AndyRC: I noticed, I think it was at Silverstone, some drone footage with, was it Mercedes?
[2884.18] AndyRC: Was that you then, was it?
[2888.18] AndyRC: No, I didn't do that one.
[2891.18] AndyRC: There's been a lot of drone footage, like freestyle kind of footage in F1, and it just clicked.
[2896.18] AndyRC: I was like, I wonder if that was yourself.
[2900.18] Andrew Lawrence: Oh, was it at the F1 when Johnny FPV was flying?
[2905.18] Andrew Lawrence: Was it Alpha Tori then, or was it Tora Rosso?
[2909.18] Andrew Lawrence: With Tora Rosso, when was that, about a year or two ago?
[2912.18] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, yeah.
[2913.18] Andrew Lawrence: That's quite cool, getting to see Johnny fly.
[2915.18] AndyRC: It's got millions of views, that, hasn't it, on the Red Bulls?
[2919.18] AndyRC: Yeah.
[2920.18] AndyRC: It's actually called F1 versus drone or something like that, isn't it?
[2924.18] AndyRC: Yeah, that was cool to meet Johnny.
[2929.18] Andrew Lawrence: That was sort of just after I had obviously just built my first drone and things like that, so I was just sort of like...
[2937.18] AndyRC: You know?
[2938.18] Andrew Lawrence: You know, really, yeah.
[2940.18] AndyRC: Kind of funny, because you get to meet, you know, obviously, celebrities doing top gear and you're just like, that's Johnny.
[2947.18] AndyRC: That's when you're getting it.
[2949.18] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, you end up shooting, I don't know, loads of different things.
[2954.18] Andrew Lawrence: I'm not really that interested in 40, but I end up shooting a lot with football players and, you know, my little brother loves football.
[2962.18] Andrew Lawrence: I'm just, yeah, not bothered about any of that.
[2965.18] Andrew Lawrence: I'd rather see Johnny FPV fly than, I don't know, any football player.
[2971.18] Tony: Wow.
[2973.18] Tony: You're on the right podcast for that, mate, don't worry.
[2977.18] AndyRC: Yeah, I like Johnny.
[2979.18] Tony: We're all the same.
[2981.18] Andrew Lawrence: I love listening.
[2982.18] Andrew Lawrence: I usually listen to the show when, like, a lot of times I have to drive down to London to always listen to it on the way down.
[2988.18] Andrew Lawrence: Like, perfect, perfect thing to listen to in the car.
[2992.18] Andrew Lawrence: I'm not sure about that, but thank you.
[2996.18] Tony: Literally us talking bollocks most of the time.
[2999.18] SPEAKER_05: And he's famous, right?
[3000.18] SPEAKER_05: This is not podcast material.
[3002.18] Tony: Yeah.
[3006.18] Andrew Lawrence: Nah, it's been a bit surreal being on the show, you know, when you listen to something and then you're something weird.
[3014.18] Tony: Is this better than Top Gear?
[3019.18] Andrew Lawrence: To me, actually, I'm not joking.
[3023.18] Andrew Lawrence: It's pretty stoked to be honest and to do Top Gear.
[3026.18] Tony: Oh, bless you.
[3029.18] AndyRC: I'm not really a fan of Top Gear yourself, then.
[3034.18] Andrew Lawrence: No, I don't mind Top Gear.
[3037.18] Andrew Lawrence: I just don't know.
[3039.18] Andrew Lawrence: It's just weird working on shows and then watching them because it's a completely different reality of what gets condensed into the 60 minutes or whatever.
[3050.18] Andrew Lawrence: It's on TV.
[3051.18] Andrew Lawrence: And you spent, I don't know, sometimes weeks filming something.
[3055.18] Andrew Lawrence: It's a strange world.
[3058.18] Andrew Lawrence: Ten frame mirrors.
[3059.18] AndyRC: There was something I wanted to ask because it's kind of something I'm working with.
[3064.18] AndyRC: Have you used any of the Insta360 stabilisation stuff for work and what you do?
[3070.18] AndyRC: Have you played with anyone?
[3071.18] AndyRC: Because what I like about what they do is the stabilisation and everything's done afterwards, a bit like Real Steady, but you can change.
[3081.18] AndyRC: So I just wondered if you played around with any of that.
[3084.18] Andrew Lawrence: I've got one of the, well, I haven't got it here with me right now, but the CineBirds by Stan FPV, one of the, you know, invisible 360.
[3094.18] Andrew Lawrence: Invisible?
[3095.18] SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
[3097.18] Andrew Lawrence: So it's like stitched in the line of it.
[3102.18] Andrew Lawrence: I've just experimented with that a few times, but I just haven't had sort of the right project to use it on, I guess.
[3111.18] AndyRC: Interesting, isn't it?
[3112.18] AndyRC: That ever completely invisible?
[3114.18] Tony: I really do not like any of that 360 cam stuff, especially when they move it from there and it looks all weird and then they transition it around to the front.
[3125.18] Tony: I just, I don't know.
[3126.18] Curry: The question on that is, is it good enough for broadcast quality in the cameras that are coming out at the moment?
[3130.18] Curry: Because it looks great when it's all expanded.
[3132.18] Curry: But if you're using it for sort of stabilised footage, sort of pretend stabilised footage for filming one thing, is that good enough?
[3141.18] Curry: So I tended to think it wasn't.
[3143.18] Andrew Lawrence: Just say it completely depends on the lighting situation.
[3147.18] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah.
[3148.18] AndyRC: Yeah, they're not too great in the dark.
[3151.18] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, if it was a sunny day, it'd probably be fine.
[3155.18] AndyRC: Yeah, I've been thinking about it.
[3156.18] AndyRC: I've got a 1R.
[3158.18] AndyRC: I was thinking that's interesting, having a completely invisible drone.
[3166.18] AndyRC: I've been thinking about it.
[3169.18] AndyRC: Yeah, so they're a little bit clunky though, Insta360 still, I think.
[3173.18] AndyRC: But I think from like a hobby perspective, if we were to look at anyone that could team up with maybe DJI, they could do something pretty special, I reckon.
[3182.18] AndyRC: Just got that missing polished thing on their product.
[3187.18] AndyRC: But I think, especially when they did the Insta360 Go, you know, they could do something like that, but specifically for FPV.
[3195.18] AndyRC: I think that would be interesting for sure.
[3199.18] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, I just wish there was, I don't know, similar form factor to the session that would just do 4K, 25, it wasn't as big.
[3210.18] Tony: We all dreaming about that.
[3214.18] Curry: GoPro took the session away just to spite us, as far as I can tell.
[3220.18] Tony: I think it was the Americans, you know, they'd smash it up and bring it back.
[3224.18] Curry: They seem to have that unlimited warranty where you could just keep smashing up and replacing them.
[3228.18] Curry: Like, GoPro like losing millions just from FPV pilots.
[3233.18] Andrew Lawrence: I love when you watch all the guys in America, is it like they get the Best Buy insurance or whatever, smash a new 9's up, take it back, it's getting you off.
[3242.18] Andrew Lawrence: Just literally walk in.
[3245.18] Tony: Can you replace it?
[3249.18] AndyRC: I think they've stopped that though.
[3252.18] AndyRC: Yeah, I didn't cricket poster something about that the other day, how you have to pay $6 an hour a month or something.
[3260.18] AndyRC: Wow, crazy. $6 bucks.
[3263.18] AndyRC: To some, that's a month's wage tone.
[3266.18] AndyRC: $6 bucks? Come on.
[3268.18] AndyRC: It's to me at the moment.
[3271.18] AndyRC: It is new, Greg loves pretty gold.
[3273.18] Tony: You need to start an ony fence, Andy.
[3277.18] AndyRC: No, not doing that.
[3279.18] Curry: This is the life of a reviewer. We're on the big bucks.
[3282.18] Curry: If we can get a $6 bucks a month right now, we're doing well.
[3285.18] AndyRC: It's just diabolical at the moment.
[3288.18] AndyRC: Well, diabolical for a while.
[3290.18] AndyRC: People are leaving and saying we've been too serious.
[3296.18] Tony: Talking bollocks for five minutes.
[3302.18] Tony: Yeah, it's great.
[3304.18] Tony: People do like us talking crap as well.
[3308.18] Tony: It's flat and all that.
[3311.18] AndyRC: That's why he doesn't like the 360 cams because it shows off the curve better.
[3319.18] AndyRC: It's been great having Andrew on.
[3321.18] AndyRC: What an insight to the kind of thing that we think about all the time.
[3326.18] AndyRC: It's just brilliant, I think.
[3329.18] AndyRC: It fascinates me.
[3331.18] AndyRC: I hope we see more of it as well because it's a very unique perspective, I think, for shows like that as well.
[3340.18] AndyRC: I think they're missing a trick.
[3342.18] AndyRC: I jumped out of my chair when I saw it on top here.
[3345.18] AndyRC: I was like, this is brilliant.
[3347.18] AndyRC: More of that.
[3349.18] AndyRC: Maybe you'll be on the grand tour or whatever.
[3352.18] AndyRC: I think it's better than the grand tour, but that's just me.
[3354.18] AndyRC: I'm not just saying that because it's up north.
[3357.18] Curry: Northern biased.
[3361.18] SPEAKER_05: That was a comment earlier, though.
[3363.18] SPEAKER_05: I think it was while you were sorting out your internet.
[3368.18] SPEAKER_05: Dave Story said, well done for making FPV mainstream, getting it on BBC One prime time slot.
[3375.18] SPEAKER_05: It is nice.
[3376.18] Curry: Previously, you did see drone shots all the time and they were the same thing.
[3381.18] Curry: It's like pulling back and panning out.
[3384.18] Curry: It was that same one.
[3387.18] Tony: They're following this one.
[3390.18] AndyRC: I like when they took Flint off of that.
[3394.18] AndyRC: That was insane.
[3395.18] AndyRC: They did a bungee jump off a dam in a car.
[3399.18] AndyRC: It's really good.
[3401.18] AndyRC: It's really good.
[3402.18] Tony: Oh, I watch it.
[3404.18] Tony: You keep going on.
[3407.18] Curry: You've been fired by everybody else.
[3410.18] Curry: I bloody wish I worked for top.
[3412.18] Curry: Is it cool?
[3413.18] Curry: Andy, I'll see who you're working for this week.
[3416.18] AndyRC: I can tell you.
[3418.18] AndyRC: Unpopular opinions.
[3420.18] AndyRC: The doll office.
[3421.18] AndyRC: That's what I'm working for every moment.
[3425.18] SPEAKER_05: I think it's just about time to wrap up.
[3428.18] SPEAKER_05: But quality guys are still as Andrew.
[3430.18] SPEAKER_05: Got any more FPV footage coming out on TV that he can talk about so that we can keep an eye out for it.
[3442.12] Andrew Lawrence: Let the air out.
[3444.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, not on TV.
[3446.12] Andrew Lawrence: There'll be some cool stuff that's coming out on YouTube, I think.
[3450.12] Andrew Lawrence: Pretty soonish.
[3452.12] Curry: All the mountain bike channels.
[3454.12] Curry: Yeah.
[3455.12] Andrew Lawrence: Watch out on the mountain bike world.
[3457.12] Andrew Lawrence: Who is your favorite sort of pilot that you look up to?
[3460.12] Andrew Lawrence: Is it Johnny?
[3463.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, Johnny's all right.
[3464.12] Andrew Lawrence: I really like blaster.
[3468.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, blaster.
[3469.12] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know.
[3471.12] Andrew Lawrence: Change his name to blaster now.
[3474.12] Andrew Lawrence: I think he just does really like creative stuff.
[3477.12] Andrew Lawrence: Like might not be the best flying in the world, but he just does this creative sort of filmic take on everything.
[3485.12] Andrew Lawrence: Like Gab 707.
[3487.12] Andrew Lawrence: He does some pretty cool stuff.
[3490.12] Andrew Lawrence: Quite like Jets.
[3492.12] Andrew Lawrence: I'm trying to think of his.
[3494.12] Andrew Lawrence: Yeah, just those guys.
[3496.12] Andrew Lawrence: Well, over lockdown, I don't know if you guys watch any, because Matt Stas did his SIM sessions for like an hour each night.
[3508.12] Andrew Lawrence: Quite like watching Matt.
[3510.12] Andrew Lawrence: I don't know.
[3511.12] Andrew Lawrence: I just like watching most people's booth on this.
[3514.12] AndyRC: And one question that we always ask that we haven't done is it be a flight case or flight one?
[3520.12] AndyRC: And then that would be a lot, I think.
[3523.12] AndyRC: All the questions.
[3524.12] AndyRC: Which one are you running?
[3525.12] AndyRC: Be it a flight kiss or a flight one?
[3528.12] Andrew Lawrence: None.
[3529.12] AndyRC: Oh, OK.
[3531.12] AndyRC: You're on that bombshell.
[3533.12] Curry: No, no, no, no.
[3536.12] Curry: Me down.
[3537.12] Curry: Good night.
[3538.12] UNKNOWN: Telemetry lost.
