[355.32] NJ: Tell us about your your your flying experience because you showed us
[360.32] NJ: something that I was just immediately excited about.
[364.32] Frank: Well it's my the only field that I can get to without going on public
[371.32] Frank: transport was shut down in the new year.
[376.32] Frank: And so I can't get out on flight at the moment and as much as I can hover a
[381.32] Frank: weep in this room it's not that much fun.
[385.32] Frank: But you know with with work as it is at the moment I decided to spend a
[391.32] Frank: little time last week grabbing hold of the laser cutter that turned her up
[396.32] Frank: up just as we're shutting down after five years of it being on order and
[402.32] Frank: had it had to go with the laser cutter and I modified some files from
[410.32] Frank: Project Air doing as many did a few years ago a big dam buster model.
[419.32] Frank: And so I grabbed some bit of cardboard and scaled down and sort of
[424.32] Frank: modified his design.
[426.32] Frank: And so I've got a nice little laser cut Lancaster which with a
[432.32] Frank: bit of a camera.
[437.32] Frank: There is there is a microphone sort of where I would probably put it.
[441.32] Frank: There we go.
[442.32] NJ: Did you actually do I've got to ask did you actually do when you say
[446.32] NJ: scaled down like quite casually through out there.
[449.32] NJ: I have in my head I'm seeing you sat there with a calculator and actually
[453.32] NJ: working out the correct things.
[456.32] Frank: I just I just went oh the plan fits on this bed.
[460.32] Frank: The laser cutter is this size.

[463.32] Frank: And then it just kind of all worked out with all the sizing and stuff.
[467.32] Frank: But yeah I've stuck a mic stand adapter in the nose for nose weight.
[475.32] Frank: This is duct tape and yeah it glides.
[478.32] Frank: I'll see if I can I'll chuck it across the room.
[480.32] Curry: I'll throw it somewhere so we can see.

[515.49] BlueOwl: That's yeah that reminds me of the fact that I have to buy one as well.
[521.49] BlueOwl: So I was gonna say I didn't get to fly.
[525.49] BlueOwl: Unfortunately I needed desperately.
[528.49] BlueOwl: Normally normally I would just go out and fly to kind of get my head straight.
[535.49] BlueOwl: But I think I think if I remember correctly I had a dream that I went flying.
[541.49] BlueOwl: So I told you that I have all these super random dreams.
[546.49] BlueOwl: And yeah I had one.
[548.49] NJ: I think at this point a dream about flying counts as flying.
[554.49] BlueOwl: Okay then two times actually.
[556.49] BlueOwl: In one that was super stupid but I actually enjoyed it quite a lot.
[562.49] BlueOwl: I also had one dream where I was kind of holding like a leech that was attached to a manned aircraft.
[570.49] BlueOwl: And then I was just flying around like I was flying FPV.
[573.49] BlueOwl: It's suddenly random, totally stupid but it was amazing because my dreams are super realistic.
[578.49] BlueOwl: It's like watching a film but you're in it.
[581.49] BlueOwl: So I was actually flying.
[584.49] NJ: So this was a plane with actual people in it that you had on some kind of tether.
[589.49] BlueOwl: Yeah I was like attached at the end.
[592.49] BlueOwl: So yeah.
[594.49] BlueOwl: And it was like flying FPV but I had to trust the pilot who was sitting in the plane.
[599.49] BlueOwl: So yeah that's my kind of flying these days.
[603.49] NJ: I think it counts.
[605.49] NJ: Yeah it's interesting.
[607.49] NJ: I did actually dust off my DLG when I was going through some of the models sitting in my loft this week.
[618.49] NJ: Just because I was trying to see what was up there.
[621.49] NJ: And the thing is I try not to go into my loft where all my other models are because I know I'm going to get excited as soon as I see something up there.
[629.49] NJ: And then I'm going to want to take it down and fly it.
[631.49] NJ: But I thought I need to go up and see what's there.
[633.49] NJ: But I did dust off the DLG and I'm starting to get a little more than a little excited about flying that again.
[640.49] NJ: Not that we've got really any kind of weather for flying gliders at the minute with exactly zero thermal activity going on.
[649.49] NJ: But yeah it was like we were saying earlier I guess now we can class more things under the category of drone as
[658.49] NJ: the FAA have told us that everything's a drone now.
[662.49] NJ: So yeah we did mention even kites are possibly categorized as drones now.
[669.49] Curry: I always thought kites and balloons were the only exceptions.
[672.49] Curry: Frisbee that's the drone but kites and balloons.
[675.49] Curry: Those were always mentioned as not a drone somehow.
[678.49] Frank: Yeah kites are different but there are still rules which I only learnt after flying them too high.
[687.49] Tony: So if you throw a frisbee that is called a drone.
[691.49] Tony: So what if you lob a rock at someone is that someone got kicked while they're flying?
[696.49] Curry: That's a free-flight drone.
[698.49] Curry: It's just getting stupid.
[701.49] Curry: It's a free-flight non-surveillance drone, a rock.
[705.49] Jack: Don't tempt me to like stick FPV to a rock and be like I'm into this now.

[720.49] Tony: I'm hovering over buying a beta flight 95v3, the digital one.

[736.49] Tony: The beta 95v3 with a digital, I'm like literally like I'm going to buy it, I'm going to buy it.
[745.49] Tony: I don't know whether to strip down a, get someone to strip one of these heroes or...

[754.49] Curry: I don't know if I'm going to strip down and then correct yourself in to get somebody to strip down.

[763.49] Frank: Are we going back a couple of weeks to when we were talking about shirts off?
[769.49] Jack: It was like Blue Owl where she went, she was talking about a dream and it was like I had a leash that was connected to a man pause.
[778.49] Curry: I thought the word was leech rather than a leash.
[781.49] Curry: I thought it was like one of those horrible little blood sucking things but I turned off that again because of the blood thing.
[788.49] Jack: What it did remind me of is Blue Owl.
[792.49] Jack: How was your maintenance going because I got heavily ribbed for that?
[797.49] Jack: Yeah that's true.
[799.49] Jack: You were breaking down your quads and stuff.
[801.49] Jack: Not finished yet.
[802.49] BlueOwl: Not finished, oh my word.
[805.49] BlueOwl: Yeah I just kind of left it where it was.
[809.49] BlueOwl: That's a very good point.
[811.49] BlueOwl: I was super motivated.
[813.49] BlueOwl: I had like a burst of energy that week and then everything just floated away.
[822.49] BlueOwl: I'm waiting for it to come back.
[824.49] BlueOwl: Anyways yeah I have a lot of plans.
[827.49] BlueOwl: I have a long long list of FPV boxes to check and getting a tangle too is one of them.
[837.49] Tony: You want to carry it around don't you and put it in your handbag and stuff.
[841.49] BlueOwl: Yep.
[843.49] Tony: That way you keep yours Tony.
[845.49] Tony: Yeah I like telling you on.
[847.49] Tony: He keeps a chair in his handbag.
[850.49] Tony: I do, I have to take a chair everywhere.

[855.49] NJ: So just sort of going back just to touch very briefly on last week's show.
[864.49] NJ: There was something that Steele mentioned.
[867.49] NJ: I'm going to put it out there and say maybe a little bit of disdain when it came to the subject of kind of silly flying and that whole movement.
[878.49] NJ: Now I can kind of see where some people are very much on the kind of side of not liking that for specific reasons when it comes to camera stabilization.
[890.49] NJ: For those that want to make the real kind of cinema style footage obviously the advances in stabilization and stabilization software is obviously very welcome.
[901.49] NJ: But I also see the school of pilots who I guess I was kind of on that side way in order to get really good smooth footage you had to tune your quad perfectly.
[913.49] NJ: You had to be balanced.
[915.49] NJ: You had to really make sure your GoPro mounts was the right material and everything was not resonating horribly so that you could get and obviously flying smoothly.
[925.49] NJ: So I feel like there's a bunch of people who feel like now stabilization has come along and anyone can just throw a new GoPro even sort of as far back as a seven straight on to a quad and get great footage and make up for some stuff.
[941.49] NJ: Should we say when it comes to the skill side and I'll be interesting to know where people are on the where people are in the chat on that whether we've got people that fall on the side of very much.
[953.49] NJ: That's the direction they've gone in. Is that a direction you're interested in or is or is that something that you've got no interest in and and you think it takes away from part of the magic of flying freestyle quads so any any strong opinions one way or the other in the group.
[970.49] Curry: What we mean by cinematic flying is it literally about or rather than doing specific tricks and that you're you're kind of doing what you might have done on a mavic but a little bit more dynamic you're doing a bit more sort of acro flying around say your point of interest.
[988.49] NJ: Well if you're in a mavic you just do a circle or something or look down on it or something and if you're a freestyling you'd be like I think that's I mean for me it's doing those things that currently because we don't know what that that new DJI one is going to be like but there are things that the Cine whoops and certainly very well set up five four inch or even three inch quads that can carry a GoPro are doing that you just wouldn't be able to do with something like a mavic air.
[1016.49] NJ: So I think it's in a category on its own away from that but certainly things that can get into the nooks and crannies do really highly maneuverable capable of mixing in some light arrow but really it's more about the footage and I think some of that is is I think one of one not just my favorite pilot and a lot of people in the chat and yourselves will certainly know Johnny FPV is he was someone who was quite vocal about that on his own channel because he came out and said look.
[1045.49] NJ: Everyone criticizes that I'm using so much stabilization but this is that's part of my job now there's the creation of where the important bit is the footage and then there's the bit I love as an FPV pilot and those are in two very distinctive categories.
[1062.49] NJ: And I think that was good of him to say that but you ought to come out and say that let's define these as two things because I love flying I love technically the technical side of flying FPV and that has its own thing but then there are times as my job this is what I want to do and the footage is what matters.
[1078.49] NJ: But the two of us I think FPV is so intertwined with the cinematic experience that there's there's some crossover but it is polarizing you can see from the chat drone racer says getting footage takes the fun away so it's a polarizing thing.
[1094.49] Tony: Well I love it. I love cinematic flying. That's my new.
[1099.49] BlueOwl: But you like flying in this way or are you like watching it?
[1103.49] Tony: Yeah I like doing it. I like doing it. I don't I'd like to like do a set thing where you know like I've followed mountain bikers and done a set route and do stuff like that. I enjoy doing that.
[1115.49] Tony: That's why I want to get this little little bit of ninety five and get closer to people because it's like so lightweight type thing you can fly it really close. I just really really enjoy it.
[1128.49] Curry: I think for many people the fun of flying it's for some it's a complete thing so the fun of flying is also about getting the results and cutting that into a good video.
[1139.49] Curry: And I'm all for like if it floats your boat go for it do the best. My only thing I'm getting a little bit bored of are these videos where it's very set up and it's like somebody's walking across and then they open the door and then the quad goes through the door and then someone else is picking up like something and it goes under there.
[1158.49] Curry: And sometimes they're using angles where you could just carry a camera along because it's so low. It needs to swoop in from at least high not just go along at person height because I just might as well carry my camera along.
[1171.49] Tony: It's a non-stop of going through stuff like you can do it.
[1175.49] Curry: I think it's a bit overused. I think here's a trend and now everyone's done it. Move on to a new trend for that one.
[1182.49] Tony: I really like it. Has anyone seen the Slabs video, the new video by Danny McCaskill, the mountain biker?
[1190.49] Tony: Yes. Really good. Have you seen the making? Because our friend Andrew Lawrence who we had on the show a few weeks back, the Top Gear Guy, he flew that video, all the Aero stuff and if you watch the making of it, making of the Slabs I think it's called.
[1208.49] Curry: I haven't seen the making of it yet. I'd say the only thing wrong with the overall video because I saw Danny doing a descending and I thought he's going much slower than he would normally would.
[1220.49] Curry: And I don't think they captured quite how steep that slope was, which I think they've got in the making because you could see people standing on the mountain looking like that.
[1230.49] Curry: That's why I was going so slow.
[1233.49] Tony: Well, that sort of food you could get from a DJI drone. I mean, you could, but it just wouldn't be as good. You can't change level and height as quick.
[1242.49] Curry: Like I say, I think I'm all about it looks good. There's one certain aspect of it, which I think is overused and that's the exact thing that you like, Tony, that constant cut, but it's too set up about how people are just...
[1258.49] Curry: It's almost like the film where the guys are carrying that pane of glass and they're like, oh, we're going to have a car chase and it's going to go through it or something like that.
[1267.49] NJ: I mean, it's a very interesting thing. For me, it's always... I think when I've gone out and done freestyle videos, there's definitely a big part of my head, which is I'll look at something I want to do from a trick and I'll think about how this is going to look in the end result.
[1284.49] NJ: So I guess everyone has their own kind of way about how they approach the footage. I mean, if we look at some of what's written in the chat here, again, you can see there's lots of different opinions.
[1297.49] NJ: Is it that someone here said that they use the footage just to help with tuning? There are others here who are saying it's a waste of time, flying's just for me.
[1309.49] NJ: There's a lot of different opinions here. So I just find that whole thing quite interesting because it's so subjective, isn't it? Everyone has a different idea of what that should be as a tool for them or whether it should exist or not.
[1325.49] NJ: There you go. Yeah, Caroline, Tyler, that was it.
[1329.49] BlueOwl: Good point, Andy.
[1332.49] BlueOwl: Because from our point of view, it's going to be boring. For me, personally, it's boring. I wouldn't want to fly like this, but I love watching Johnny FPV, for example.
[1341.49] BlueOwl: But I think it sells when you're not into FPV and suddenly you see this shot that seems impossible because of how somebody can carry cameras so far away.
[1352.49] BlueOwl: And it looks just like a normal shot.
[1358.49] Frank: There was a couple of channels that you shared with us a couple of weeks ago. The Pika FPV and Blaster.
[1368.49] Tony: Blaster is amazing.
[1370.49] Frank: Yeah, you do.
[1372.49] Jack: That's really impressive.
[1374.49] Frank: I think there's definitely also a skill in knowing where to fly as well.
[1382.49] BlueOwl: How close you can get. It's not just about flying in a straight line. It's all about the spot as well, I think.
[1391.49] BlueOwl: But yeah, for me, if I had to if I had a choice, I would definitely go for a freestyle quad.
[1398.49] BlueOwl: And sometimes I mean, it's just me, of course, but I know that many people do that, too.
[1404.49] BlueOwl: Sometimes when I am kind of pressured to create a video or to fly because I want to create a video, I would actually remove the GoPro completely or I would keep it for the weight.
[1415.49] BlueOwl: But I would turn it off just to enjoy the flying. So yeah, like Andy said, it depends whether you're more into flying or you're more into making videos.
[1429.49] Tony: Mine's both. I love coming home and then cracking a beer and then editing and stuff.
[1436.49] Tony: I put out a video last week of all my last year's stuff all mixed together, which I enjoyed doing that.
[1445.49] Tony: It took me about five hours to cut it all in and out, but I really enjoyed doing it.
[1450.49] NJ: I must admit, the first time I think it was when I first got my GoPro 8 Black, I remember seeing the results.
[1458.49] NJ: I remember thinking I've got to get my new quad I built at the time, which was my Osiris, the Halo Osiris.
[1467.49] NJ: And I got that home and I was like, right, I've made notes about the things I need to tune.
[1471.49] NJ: I did a load of packs because I was in the middle of tuning things up.
[1474.49] NJ: And I remember looking at the end results of the tune and thinking, well, I know at least one of those videos is going to look really smooth because I'd had the HyperSmooth on to see what it was like.
[1483.49] NJ: And then I looked and every single video was just completely butter smooth.
[1487.49] NJ: And a little part of me died inside because I was thinking, well, normally I'd have to work really hard with tuning to get that smoothness that I want in the camera.
[1498.49] NJ: And now I just don't have to bother anymore. Now I can just turn HyperSmooth on and everything will look great.
[1502.49] NJ: So, yeah, I kind of get that angle a little bit.
[1506.49] Curry: This is the bit we like because no one else except for you can be bothered to spend that much time writing everything down on little spreadsheets and saying, I just need to, no one even understands the fast forward stuff.
[1518.49] Tony: Whatever it is.
[1520.49] Tony: I need to fly the hero session and trying to get trying to fly so smooth that it wouldn't, you know, I wouldn't get any Horizon Blitz.
[1528.49] Tony: And I managed to do it a few, you know, a few videos I'd put out and some I just did.
[1533.49] NJ: Was that the four or the five?
[1535.49] Tony: Session five, but it had some kind of thingy on it, but it was it was never any good.
[1543.49] Tony: This smoothing out on that quite a minute.
[1546.49] NJ: I wasn't too bad with the five.
[1548.49] NJ: The four was the one that the one thing I hate about the session four was just the low light handling was precious.

[1600.49] Frank: The Insta360 seemed to be aiming for more of the FPV stuff with the like the beta FPV Insta360 camera.
[1607.49] NJ: I mean, we're always told that the FPV market is so tiny and a blip to all of these big camera companies.
[1613.49] NJ: But for a company to very openly do that, that's obviously shows that the market is somewhat there, albeit that they're a small company growing.

[1669.49] NJ: So one thing I wanted to very quickly touch on, because this has been causing me sleepless nights, which was two episodes back.
[1680.49] NJ: Curry asked a question which I had to stop and think about for longer than the space in which he asked me, which was about the we were talking about the supersonic glider or the glider that was trans on him and didn't make it supersonic.
[1695.49] NJ: And Curry did ask me, and I promised a pre-chat, I've warned everyone I'd be talking about this very briefly.
[1701.49] NJ: And I did say I keep it brief because when I start going off on one about aerodynamics, Curry, I think he has a special sign he holds up which says, please send help.
[1710.49] NJ: So if I can get through this before he holds that up, we're all good.
[1713.49] NJ: But the answer to that question was actually it's the reason we can't get a glide or model glide is very difficult to get it to supersonic.
[1723.49] NJ: It's because of what happens to the glider as it goes from subsonic to transonic to supersonic.
[1730.49] NJ: Everything changes a great deal once you start to try and break through the sound barrier.
[1736.49] NJ: Now, the short version, because I've decided what we'll do is we'll do these in little little bites, because I think they're interesting information, but I don't want everyone to fall asleep.
[1744.49] NJ: So the very basics of it are that it's the wing design.
[1749.49] NJ: And there is a reason why generally planes with a straight wing that are capable, with lots of power that are capable of getting up to pushing towards the speeds of transonic almost becoming supersonic.
[1764.49] NJ: There's a reason they can't do that.
[1765.49] NJ: And as you approach supersonic, what happens is you end up with a pressure wave, because you've probably seen it if you've ever seen anything like an F-14 or something like that going through the sky as it starts to go supersonic.
[1777.49] NJ: There's like a triangle of a pressure wave that this thing that the plane's punching through.
[1783.49] NJ: Yeah, so what you have, okay, this is where I'm going to end the small snippet of this, and we'll move forward with this little tech bit every time I'm on.
[1792.49] NJ: But do we all have a rough idea of how wing works in terms of air going slower underneath and going faster on top of it?
[1801.49] Frank: That's a dangerous path to go, Dan and Jay.
[1805.49] Jack: Have you got a whiteboard for me and Tony?
[1808.49] Frank: So aerodynamicists don't agree on exactly that.
[1813.49] Frank: Is it a high note pressure or is it the up note?
[1815.49] NJ: Yeah, and there's the subject of whether the two air flows actually need to meet at the end, but we're not going down that path.
[1823.49] Jack: We're not doing that.
[1825.49] NJ: But what we know, what we can say, to the best of our knowledge, is that air moves faster over the top of the wing than it does on the underside, just as with your quad props.
[1836.49] NJ: But what happens is as your glider starts to approach that speed of sound,
[1842.49] NJ: the air over the top of the wing starts to move faster than the glider does, because that needs to move faster to give you the low pressure that gives you lift.
[1851.49] NJ: Now, the problem is then that you have air going over the top of the wing that is starting to go supersonic before the plane is, okay?
[1860.49] NJ: That's essentially the problem when you have a straight out wing, because what it does is that pressure wave comes back onto the middle of the wing and it starts to push down on the wing and stall it.
[1870.49] NJ: So a straight wing aircraft has a problem with going into the speed of sound.
[1875.49] NJ: It then starts to stall from the pressure wave that's created on the wing itself.
[1880.49] NJ: So what needs to happen is the wings, instead of being straight, any idea?
[1885.49] NJ: Anyone want to guess what shape they need to go, instead of being straight out?
[1889.49] Curry: Towards! Triangle!
[1891.49] Curry: Based in mind, an F-14 folds them back.
[1894.49] Curry: Did you have a glider with folding wings like an F-14? Would that get up to supersonic speed?
[1898.49] NJ: Well, that would be a much better chance of doing so.
[1901.49] NJ: Basically, if you think of the pressure wave like a cone coming off the back of the aircraft trying to break the speed of sound,
[1908.49] NJ: what shape wing would fit neatly inside of a cone? It would be a delta. It would be something like that.
[1913.49] NJ: And that's just a very small idea of why a delta wing...
[1917.49] NJ: Yeah, exactly. Just like a triangle.
[1920.49] NJ: If you fit a triangle into a delta cone, yes, Tony gets the Teachers Pet Award.
[1926.49] NJ: That gives you an idea of where the wing design would have to go in order for a plane to not have problems going into the speed of sound.
[1936.49] NJ: So they need to modify the wing a bit. That's it. Okay, we can move on.
