[223.38] Curry: this is obstacle avoidance for your toy grade type pretend Mavic one
[228.38] Curry: which I tested in the garden
[230.38] Curry: and I found out that the range of this is somewhere between 5 and 10 meters
[236.38] Curry: meaning as soon as I took off in my garden and tried to go forward it would just beep at me
[240.38] Curry: so I could fly around the garden backwards
[242.38] Curry: but as soon as I tried to go forwards anywhere it would just stop and beep
[246.38] Curry: so not brilliant for small gardens
[248.38] Curry: but I might take it off
[250.38] NJ: is it purely an audiable warning?
[252.38] NJ: it's not linked to the flight controller in any way
[254.38] NJ: no it is linked
[255.38] Curry: it just
[256.38] Curry: you press forward it just beeps
[258.38] Curry: but doesn't go anywhere
[259.38] Frank: we have a closer look at the camera
[261.38] Tony: how do you link it onto a non-
[263.38] Curry: obstacle avoidance thingy
[265.38] Curry: oh the obstacle avoidance
[266.38] Curry: it's on a little survey type thing so it goes back and forth like this
[269.38] Curry: it's got a laser
[270.38] Curry: it's got a nice warning here saying
[271.38] Curry: do not look at the laser else your eyes burn out
[274.38] Curry: so it fires a laser out and there's a return
[277.38] Curry: who knows how dangerous this is
[279.38] Curry: but apparently it can detect
[281.38] Curry: but from here onwards it can't detect
[284.38] Curry: so you can happily fly backwards or sideways into a wall
[287.38] Curry: but just not forward for a wall that's over 5 meters away
[290.38] Frank: does it not have like a class 1, class 2, class 1a kind of sticker on it somewhere?
[297.38] Curry: no it just says please do not look directly at the laser emission port of obstacle avoidance
[303.38] Curry: it may cause eye injury

[309.38] Frank: well I guess it maybe it says somewhere on the box
[313.38] Frank: but usually it has to have a class certification for it to be legal to sell

[326.38] Curry: so if I want to do my in-depth test of flying in the garden
[330.38] Curry: then I have to remove that again and then fly it around

[337.38] Curry: and it was jolly exciting for the five minutes it lasted
[341.38] Curry: and now I found out that you can't turn obstacle avoidance off
[345.38] Curry: which is a bit of a pain
[346.38] Curry: so I have to actually remove the obstacle avoidance thing

[475.89] Frank: yeah so in 37 minutes the NASA Perseverance rover is touching down
[485.89] Frank: or hopefully if they've got the correct units this time
[491.89] Frank: and it's got the first flying vehicle on Mars on board
[499.89] Frank: so they've done a load of testing
[503.89] Frank: it's basically a coaxial helicopter
[507.89] Frank: so two propellers one going one way one going the other one above the other
[511.89] Frank: so it's not quite a cocopter not quite a helicopter
[515.89] Frank: something else entirely with like huge huge carbon blades
[519.89] Frank: because the atmosphere is pretty thin
[522.89] Frank: but they've got this issue kind of where
[527.89] Frank: they haven't been able to test it entirely
[530.89] Frank: because you know you can't really tune gravity here to match gravity on Mars
[538.89] Frank: but you can kind of fudge it some other ways
[542.89] NJ: I wonder if they've got probably a variable pitch on it or something to...
[547.89] Frank: but then there's also the atmosphere composition is different
[552.89] Frank: the atmosphere pressure is different
[554.89] Frank: so they've had to kind of like test lots of different
[558.89] Frank: you know you can kind of go well it'll be like this if we go in this particular wind tunnel
[564.89] Frank: and it'll be like this if we go in this particular wind tunnel
[566.89] Frank: and it'll kind of all match up hopefully with our simulations of what it should fly like
[573.89] Frank: but it's kind of a bit of a lots of fudge factors until they actually get it on Mars and try and fly it
[583.89] Frank: so the rover's gonna put it down somewhere run away
[587.89] Frank: so it doesn't get crashed into or whatever
[591.89] Frank: and then they're gonna take it off and hover and then try and land it
[596.89] Frank: and if they do that then it's mission success
[598.89] Frank: because it will be the first one to fly on Mars
[602.89] Frank: and then they're not expecting it to do anything else
[604.89] Frank: it would be nice if it does but that's like that is their goal for this mission for that aircraft
[611.89] Frank: so they're not going to try and recharge it or anything
[613.89] Curry: it's just like will it fly will it land if so all good
[615.89] Frank: yeah have we got the PIDs right does it all work
[619.89] Frank: are we right in our assumptions of how it all works
[623.89] NJ: I'm pretty sure there'll be no scrubbing this particular mission either
[628.89] NJ: that's quite a long way to go it's now or never
[633.89] Frank: so it'd be interesting because like if they fly it and it works
[637.89] Frank: or you know maybe it needs a bit more tuning
[640.89] Frank: and they can send a new version of the software over the very slow Martian internet
[645.89] Frank: and leave it to update and try again
[649.89] NJ: probably talk talk or someone like that
[652.89] Frank: yeah well that's the other thing because that's what we're kind of talking about just before we went live
[657.89] Frank: is although it's got loads of HD cameras all over the landing vehicle
[663.89] Frank: and on the rover and I think on the drone as well
[667.89] Frank: but the radios they've got on it can only like transmit it up to the Mars orbiters
[676.89] Frank: and then the Mars orbiters have to then relay that back to Earth
[681.89] Frank: but that means that you've got a tiny tiny bit of bandwidth in which to actually send everything back
[686.89] Frank: so even though it's got loads of HD footage and photos and everything
[691.89] Frank: that it will be sending back over the next few weeks months whatever
[695.89] Frank: it won't be it doesn't have the bandwidth there to be able to just FPV it
[700.89] Frank: even if even with the delay bit of lag in there
[704.89] Frank: well there's a lag as well so there will be the lag in the telemetry
[708.89] Frank: but they've literally only got enough bandwidth to send telemetry live
[715.89] Jack: that sucks
[717.89] Frank: yeah but we'll get more and more nice HD footage and photos and things over the next few weeks
[724.89] Frank: but it will come out gradually
[727.89] NJ: I presume it's going to have some kind of selfie stick that's going to come out of one side
[732.89] NJ: so that it can take lovely self pictures

[738.89] Jack: let's hope it doesn't have to be put into DFU mode and someone has to hold the boot button down
[743.89] Jack: in order to re-flash it
[746.89] NJ: Robin says I hope it has turtle mode
[752.89] Frank: yeah so they've said if it goes well and it does fly if they can get it to fly
[757.89] Frank: then they'll be sending loads more and they'll use those to then
[761.89] Frank: like do sort of longer range reconnaissance from the rovers
[768.89] Frank: or maybe even mapping in more detail or that kind of thing
[773.89] Frank: so there might be loads more drones on Mars
[777.89] Frank: but this is the kind of proof of concept to say
[780.89] Frank: we're pretty sure we can get something to fly on Mars

[1024.14] NJ: that they didn't know how a wing worked
[1029.14] NJ: the basic function of a wing and I think that's a very good place to start with aerodynamics
[1034.14] NJ: so what we're going to do here the first thing I'm going to do is just show you
[1038.14] NJ: with my iPad here
[1042.14] NJ: bear with me what we're going to do
[1045.14] NJ: I'm going to draw on my iPad here and show you
[1049.14] NJ: bear with me
[1050.14] Jack: it's an audio podcast
[1053.14] NJ: I'll have to start with this
[1056.14] NJ: and then go from there
[1058.14] Jack: if you're listening to this in the car I'm very sorry try not to fall asleep
[1062.14] NJ: here we have particles going from left to right which represent airflow to us
[1067.14] NJ: so we're going to be talking about looking down the cross section of a wing
[1071.14] NJ: and then the first thing I'm going to do is just draw something that would fly terribly
[1076.14] NJ: so we're going to draw
[1078.14] Jack: a penis
[1079.14] NJ: we're going to draw a brick
[1081.14] NJ: and you can kind of see what the airflow is doing around it
[1084.14] NJ: it's hitting the front of the brick and then it's all incredibly wavy and turbulent
[1089.14] NJ: all the way around it
[1090.14] Jack: beautiful drawing of a ZMR
[1092.14] Tony: that looks like the air on the top of my van when I put my rooftop tent on
[1097.14] NJ: well there you go exactly
[1099.14] NJ: you got that yeah
[1100.14] NJ: and then what I'm going to do here I'm just going to change this to represent pressure instead
[1105.14] NJ: and if you look that's actually giving you an idea of what's going on with the pressure
[1110.14] NJ: of the air particles and remember air is just a fluid it's a type of fluid
[1116.14] NJ: so it's no very very similar behaviour to how water is
[1121.14] NJ: but there you've got air at the front and you can see
[1124.14] NJ: the blue is the lower pressure and the red is the high pressure
[1128.14] NJ: but you can see an enormous amount of pressure on the front of our brick doing 150 miles through the air
[1135.14] NJ: and you can see there's no real pressure either way that's going to do anything to help this brick fly very well
[1143.14] NJ: so there's an example of something very very un-aerodynamic
[1147.14] NJ: and you can see all the pressure in the front would mean this would just want to slow down
[1151.14] NJ: it's not going to gouse in the air
[1153.14] NJ: now if you look at the cross section of a wing
[1155.14] NJ: so I'm just going to reset this now
[1157.14] Frank: I'm going to get rid of the line pay

[1161.14] NJ: right so back to a blank page
[1163.14] NJ: and then what I'm going to have to do here is freehand try and draw
[1167.14] NJ: something that resembles a wing
[1170.14] NJ: bear with me
[1172.14] NJ: something like that okay so there's our wing
[1175.14] NJ: very nice
[1177.14] NJ: it's not a wonderful wing but it will do
[1179.14] NJ: this is looking down the cross section of a wing
[1182.14] NJ: and what you're noticing here with the design of a wing
[1185.14] NJ: is that you have a very flat section on the underside
[1188.14] NJ: and a curvy top section
[1190.14] NJ: if you ever look at an airplane wing from the side
[1192.14] NJ: you'll notice the top section is very curved
[1194.14] NJ: same with propeller design
[1196.14] NJ: what you're actually trying to do here
[1198.14] NJ: what it's about is how the airflow is splitting here
[1200.14] NJ: it has to split to go either side
[1203.14] NJ: of the aerofoil either the top side or the bottom side
[1206.14] NJ: to move through our fluid which is air
[1208.14] NJ: now when you do that
[1210.14] NJ: there's a whole argument about
[1212.14] NJ: how this works which I can see Frank raising an eyebrow
[1214.14] NJ: but we're not going to go there
[1216.14] NJ: I can feel the eyebrows from here
[1218.14] Frank: dangerous territory this
[1220.14] NJ: we're going with the standard
[1222.14] NJ: you know GCSE to A level physics explanation
[1225.14] NJ: if I go to the pressure screen again
[1229.14] NJ: you'll notice something different going on
[1232.14] NJ: now what we've actually got
[1234.14] NJ: I haven't actually drawn a terribly good
[1236.14] NJ: terribly good wing aerofoil here but
[1238.14] NJ: this will give you the rough idea
[1240.14] NJ: you'll now notice we've got a low pressure
[1242.14] NJ: on the top of the wing
[1244.14] NJ: and we've got a high pressure under the wing
[1246.14] NJ: and those are the forces acting on this object
[1249.14] NJ: and the basic principle of this
[1251.14] NJ: is that we have by curving the top surface
[1254.14] NJ: the air has to take a longer surface to go along
[1257.14] NJ: to meet up with the back of the aerofoil
[1260.14] NJ: so the air has to go there
[1262.14] NJ: has to move faster across the top
[1264.14] NJ: to meet up with the air
[1266.14] NJ: that's going in a straight line on the underside
[1270.14] NJ: so because of that
[1272.14] NJ: faster moving air is at a lower pressure
[1275.14] NJ: than slower moving air which is at a higher pressure
[1278.14] NJ: and now you've got forces on the wing
[1280.14] NJ: of low pressure on the top
[1282.14] NJ: high pressure underneath
[1284.14] NJ: if you've got low pressure on the underside
[1286.14] NJ: you're pushing the wing up
[1288.14] NJ: and that is in a nutshell the very basics
[1290.14] NJ: and I'm saying very basics here
[1292.14] NJ: because there's lots more arguments about how all this works
[1294.14] NJ: that's the very basics of how an aerofoil
[1296.14] NJ: generates lift on an aircraft
[1298.14] NJ: and what you'll see in a propeller
[1300.14] NJ: because a propeller is nothing more than a rotating wing
[1304.14] NJ: so there we go, I think I managed that under 5 minutes
