[5.0] Curry: We record the show live on the Thursday night on youtube.com forward slash Let's Drone Out [10.0] Curry: and our lovely patrons help with the editing costs. [12.0] (Patrons): These are Wacky Wes, Mikey Dread, Art Faulkner, Carlos Campos. [19.0] (Patrons): Thank you. [20.0] Jack: Hello and welcome back to another episode of Let's Drone Out. [57.35] Jack: I've been away, I have come back, everything is all right in the world and I am proud of you guys. [64.35] Jack: You're joined by my little Tony. [66.35] Jack: Bonjour. [68.35] Jack: AKA my darling wife, my darling substitute dad, Curry Kitten. [74.35] Jack: Hello. [76.35] Jack: And the missed opportunity, Andrew's like thank you. [80.35] Frank: Good evening. [82.35] Jack: Did you like that one? [83.35] Jack: Very good, thank you. [84.35] Jack: Yeah, they're idiots. [86.35] Jack: Hello. [88.35] Jack: Sorry, I was late. [90.35] Jack: I had to, I've not long got up. [93.35] Jack: I kind of like drifted off and then I had a text message from someone and I was like, that's weird. [98.35] Jack: That's not Frank shouting at me. [100.35] Jack: But I have got two minutes before the show and then immediately needed to go to the toy. [105.35] Tony: Is it weird that 8 o'clock is your 8am? [110.35] Jack: I've got, well, no, I've got two of them really. [114.35] Jack: I've got a nine. [118.35] Jack: I get up at nine-ish and then I go to sleep in the afternoon. [123.35] Jack: I've been to the dentist today. [126.35] Jack: How is that experience with Covid? [129.35] Jack: Well, he looks right now. [134.3] Jack: My crotch is all wet. [136.3] Jack: That will be fantastic. [141.3] Frank: I do not understand what I saw just then. [144.3] Frank: What happened? [145.3] Frank: I thought it was that. [148.3] Jack: It's a bottle of Ramune, the Japanese lemonade stuff, or sangria, they call it, even though it's not alcoholic. [158.3] Tony: Is sangria alcoholic? [160.3] Tony: Sangria is a Spanish wine. [163.3] Jack: Yeah, well, it's not. [165.3] Curry: I'm confused about what's happening right now. [167.3] Curry: Weird. [168.3] Jack: They put it in this weird Japanese, but it's based on the Victorian bottles where it's got the glass. [176.3] Jack: It's got two divots and it keeps the marble in there. [179.3] Jack: It's just like a weird Japanese drink. [183.3] Tony: And two minutes in. [186.3] Jack: I've drunk it before and everyone asked me what the hell I was drinking. [189.3] Jack: It was in a metal can. [190.3] Jack: I usually buy it in a metal bottle, but I couldn't. [195.3] Jack: So I've had to buy the glass one. [199.3] Frank: It's very strange. [200.3] Frank: Before we got the show started, when we were still waiting for Jack. [204.3] Jack: You were actually talking about drones. [205.3] Frank: We were talking about drones. [208.3] Frank: And then Jack turned up and we went live and we're talking about sangria. [215.3] Curry: For some reason, I already want to mention the fact that in celebration of Jack, my dog got really excited, ran up and downstairs ten times and then was so excited as she ran around. [226.3] Curry: Some poo came out. [232.3] Jack: Very, very nice. [233.3] Jack: I fly. [234.3] Frank: Yep. [235.3] Jack: They sell weird stuff in Brighton. [236.3] Jack: I know Clive, if you're watching this, thank you so much. [239.3] Jack: Your package arrived today. [241.3] Jack: In celebration of where is Blue Owl? [244.3] Jack: I know it was International Women's Day on Tuesday. [247.3] Jack: Was that right? [248.3] Jack: I think it's Tuesday. [250.3] Jack: On Tuesday. [251.3] Jack: And she's not here. [252.3] Jack: Why is she not here? [254.3] Frank: Have we seen Blue Owl and Jack in the same stream? [257.3] Frank: That's the question. [259.3] Jack: Oh, does she hate me still? [262.3] Jack: I'm sorry. [267.3] Jack: Oh, I'm sorry, Blue Owl. [268.3] Jack: It was a joke. [270.3] Jack: I talk complete bollocks. [272.3] Jack: You're way more beautiful and intelligent than me. [274.3] Jack: I'm sorry. [276.3] Jack: Please come back. [277.3] Curry: That's a given, but she's feeling unwell. [281.3] Curry: At least she hasn't, like, texted last minute and said I've fallen down some stairs and stuff. [285.3] Curry: Well, I got locked out of her room. [288.3] Jack: There's a reason why the universe was protecting her from me. [296.3] Jack: Oh, God, that doesn't sound good at all, does it? [299.3] Jack: Look, I'm a complete idiot. [301.3] Jack: Please just ignore me. [305.3] Jack: And, yeah, like everyone else does on here, especially Tony. [308.3] Frank: So, yeah, I was going to say that before Jack turned up, Tony was telling us about how he's gone flying. [317.3] Curry: Should I carry on? [318.3] Curry: Yeah. [319.3] Curry: What's up from the beginning? [320.3] Curry: Pretend we hadn't heard it before. [321.3] Curry: Yeah. [322.3] Tony: I can't remember how I started it. [324.3] Tony: Oh, I went flying. [328.3] Curry: Because you got a new something on it to test. [331.3] Tony: A new GPS puck, which worked perfectly. [336.3] Tony: So the V1 that I had was everyone was saying, oh, it's probably in the wrong place. [343.3] Tony: You know, things might be disturbing it, getting satellites and stuff. [347.3] Tony: But literally bought the V2, plugged it in, loads of satellites straight away. [354.3] Tony: It was really good. [356.3] Tony: So, and it was like 20 seconds to get them. [361.3] Tony: So I was very happy. [363.3] Tony: I flew over the back of Edenbridge where there is a microlight landed and taken off place. [370.3] Tony: But I thoroughly checked the air. [373.3] Tony: You weren't fishing. [375.3] Jack: You weren't flying. [376.3] Jack: You were fishing. [377.3] Jack: That was it. [378.3] Jack: Yeah. [379.3] Curry: They're flying now. [380.3] Curry: Public places. [381.3] Curry: You're OK. [382.3] Curry: But the reason we've talked about this, because then I said to Tony, did you test out GPS [387.3] Curry: rescue mode? [388.3] Curry: And he said, no way. [389.3] Curry: And I was like, well, you don't want to do it if you have to use it in anger. [394.3] Curry: You want to test it out, make sure it works. [396.3] Curry: He says, no, I'm not doing that. [397.3] Curry: I was like, you put it on a switch, you turn the switch on. [400.3] Curry: If it goes wrong, you turn it back off and you fly it back normally. [404.3] Curry: And it's like this is like flat earth. [406.3] Curry: Tony doesn't believe in this. [408.3] Curry: It's like, no, that can't be done. [410.3] Jack: There can't be satellites up there. [412.3] Jack: It will be in the way of the membrane. [414.3] Tony: The GPS masts, they're not tall enough. [417.3] Tony: I've got two panic things. [419.3] Tony: If my FPV feed goes, I switch down one and that will make it go into horizon mode. [427.3] Tony: So if my spotter tells me which way it is, I can flip the goggles off and have a look [434.3] Tony: and then hopefully fly it back. [437.3] Tony: And then the other one is switch it all the way to the bottom and then it will fly home [441.3] Tony: or fall out of the sky. [443.3] Curry: But that's why you have to test it. [446.3] Curry: Then you can be confident if you do put it in that mode, it will come back. [450.3] Tony: No, I'm too scared to. [452.3] Curry: Why? [453.3] Curry: But you just turn it back off again. [455.3] Tony: Yeah, but it turns upside down and starts shooting towards the floor and then, oh my God, no. [462.3] Tony: And it would go up high. [464.3] Tony: How far would you have to go away and stuff like that before it works? [468.3] Tony: Is there a limit? [470.3] Tony: It needs to be over 200 meters. [474.3] Curry: Go over 200 meters away, go plenty of time up and then flip the switch. [479.3] Curry: If it does something weird, then take the switch back off again and just fly it. [484.3] Tony: I'm too scared. [486.3] Tony: I'll do it the day that I panic and I've lost. [491.3] Curry: That's no good, because then it might just bugger off to China or something. [495.3] Curry: And you're like, oh, that's weird. [497.3] Curry: I should have tested that. [500.3] Curry: Or you'd be saying, come back. [503.3] Frank: Please, please don't test it like wings and wheels. [507.3] Jack: Yeah. [509.3] Curry: I'm not convinced of part one of your plan either, because if like, oh, I'll take my goggles off and fly that line of sight. [516.3] Curry: Mr. I can't fly line of sight. [519.3] Curry: Stand up or use return to home. [521.3] Curry: This is going interestingly. [524.3] Curry: Let's hope your pretend spotter's got better skills at flying it back for you. [530.3] Tony: I will agree with Tony. [534.3] Jack: I will agree with Tony. [536.3] Jack: It is really difficult to like, especially when you've been flying for manual that long to like regain, like give control over. [544.3] Jack: It's like I couldn't fly any DJI stuff for ages because it was just like so I don't know. [552.3] Jack: You just kind of like felt like you're fighting it all the time. [556.3] Tony: Which GPS was it, Tony? [558.3] Tony: It's the TBS V2 one. [560.3] Tony: I got the V1 and it was just crap. [563.3] Tony: Didn't work. [564.3] Tony: So the V2 I got. [567.3] Tony: Got a ticket for wings and wheels. [568.3] Tony: See you all on the Sunday. [570.3] Tony: Sweet. [571.3] Tony: See you there, Colin. [573.3] Frank: Tony, the guy who regularly flies over the sea is scared of return to home. [579.3] Tony: Yeah, but I'm in control over the sea. [581.3] Tony: That's the problem. [584.3] Tony: What? [585.3] Tony: Pressing that switch. [587.3] Tony: Pressing the switch is the problem, is what I mean. [590.3] Curry: We're talking about an out of control situation. [592.3] Curry: I'm in control and if I lose control, then it'll crash. [598.3] Tony: I've only done it a few times on my DJI stuff or my Phantom and that. [603.3] Tony: I've done it once in Greece where I got lost flying off the side of a mountain and went, [608.3] Tony: right, I'm going to have to press a button and hope and it was perfect to come back. [612.3] Tony: But I don't trust these. [616.3] Tony: Why are you testing it? [619.3] Tony: I'm not doing it. [623.65] Tony: What was that, sorry, Jack? [624.65] Jack: Are you camping at wings and wheels? [628.65] Jack: Maybe. [630.65] Frank: It's a long way away. [633.65] Frank: Timeways. [634.65] Frank: And I don't know where I will be or what my situation will be at the time. [638.65] Frank: I might have a vehicle. [641.65] Frank: I might have a home. [643.65] Frank: Or I might be living under a bridge. [647.65] Frank: I don't know. [648.65] Frank: I'm working out. [650.65] Tony: My fingers are dying. [652.65] Tony: I'm sleeping on my rooftop tent when it arrives. [657.65] Jack: I might be spooning my darling wife. [660.65] Tony: You won't get up that ladder, boy. [662.65] Tony: I will. [664.65] Tony: I won't let you. [666.65] Jack: It's like Tony's holding four. [668.65] Jack: It's like a siege. [671.65] Jack: Tony, it's not necessary to dig a moat around your motor vehicle. [678.65] Curry: Because of how tall Tony's van is on his tent, if you give the van a good shove, [684.65] Curry: imagine how much he's going to move around up there. [688.65] Curry: I feel like in Star Trek, we're never going to use a saw to sight. [691.65] Tony: I will make sure I fill my water tank up with water then so you can't move it. [696.65] Jack: I know. [697.65] Jack: It's like the overhang is perfect. [702.65] Jack: Like proper leverage to snap the tent off the vehicle. [706.65] Jack: You won't be able to get in there. [707.65] Tony: That's all going to have a canopy on it. [710.65] Curry: Oh, whatever. [711.65] Tony: And a guard dump at the bottom the size of the cat. [714.65] Curry: It's like he's issuing us with a challenge. [717.65] Tony: I got off you lot. [721.65] Jack: Just strapped fireworks to it. [724.65] Jack: Well, in celebration of tonight's show, [727.65] Jack: I've worn my drone user's clueless careless criminal t-shirt. [731.65] Jack: Being one of the top things. [737.65] Tony: I wore a car t-shirt today. [740.65] Jack: Well done. [741.65] Tony: I'm not wearing my ex-car t-shirt again. [745.65] Frank: Before we move on, has anyone else been flying in the past week? [750.65] Frank: You've been able to fly until, Kerry? [753.65] Curry: No. [754.65] Curry: As I said, now we've got this... [757.65] Curry: We've had partial restrictions lifted so we can basically go out to a public... [762.65] Curry: We can do recreation in the public field, essentially, [765.65] Curry: which means we could go off and fly something. [768.65] Curry: As long as it's an old private field and we don't have to pay to get there, [771.65] Curry: which is why things like BFMA fields aren't open. [774.65] Curry: But as soon as that happened, we had gales and rain down here, [778.65] Curry: so I haven't been out. [780.65] Jack: Yeah, it has been absolutely shocking weather down here. [783.65] Tony: Yes. [784.65] Tony: Yeah, been pretty grim. [786.65] Tony: Outside in. [788.65] Frank: Yeah. [789.65] Frank: Jack, since you've last been on the show, [791.65] Frank: have you managed to fly anything or...? [794.65] Frank: Do you do anything? [797.65] Jack: I finished the guinea as a front nose, [800.65] Jack: and that is all done. [802.65] Jack: I'm not overly impressed with the centre caster wheel, [809.65] Jack: and I've finished-ish. [812.65] Jack: I could probably do a bit more configuration, [816.65] Jack: but the Flight Test Explorer, [819.65] Jack: which you can see the wing poking out there, that's that done. [824.65] Jack: Do you want to grab it and show it off? [826.65] Jack: Move in the right direction? Not really. [828.65] Jack: He hasn't got any hands. [832.65] Jack: I have. [833.65] Tony: It's got a t-shirt, that's it. [836.65] Frank: So you decided against flying her in the however many mile an hour winds [842.65] Frank: that we've got at the moment then, yeah? [844.65] Jack: No, I doubt the elastic bands are flimsy [847.65] Jack: and keeping the wing attached to the fuselage. [849.65] Jack: You're going to be strong enough for that. [851.65] Curry: It looks like you're reminiscent of a Skywalker. [854.65] Curry: Is that what it's kind of modelled? [856.65] Jack: It's basically a sh** bickler. [859.65] Frank: I reckon that you'd be able to get it flying quite easily in this weather. [863.65] Frank: You just point it into the wind, full throttle, and let go, [866.65] Frank: and it will just kind of drift backwards slowly. [868.65] Jack: The thing is, it's not very aerodynamic. It's like a bus. [871.65] Frank: Exactly. That's why we're drifting backwards. [874.65] Jack: So, and here's the nose of, what are they called? [878.65] Jack: What are they called? The HS1171? [880.65] Jack: Camera. [881.65] Jack: So I ain't going to be able to see anything. [883.65] Jack: And one of the old air screw things. [888.65] Tony: They're massive thin things. [890.65] Jack: Yeah, it's just heavy as anything. [893.65] Jack: I should really crack it open. [894.65] Frank: Not so much FPV as AWACS with that antenna. [898.65] Jack: Having a baby bell on a stick barbecue skewer on top of your plane. [904.65] Tony: Has anyone seen Minh Chin Kim fly the DJI drone? [909.65] Tony: Because he could actually fly. [911.65] Tony: This is him flying it now, just to show that it can be flown properly. [919.65] Curry: That's how well I got up to when I was watching it, [921.65] Curry: and then I had to do something else. [923.65] Curry: But did you see BMS Thomas as well doing it through some race course? [929.65] Curry: Yes. [930.65] Jack: Did they tune it so it's better, or is this stopped? [933.65] Jack: Can you tune it? [935.65] Curry: There are rates you can mess with once you put it into full manual mode. [939.65] Tony: Yeah, he's doing well. [944.06] Tony: I don't think he broke his. [946.06] Tony: Do you see the props in view every now and again? [950.06] Frank: Yeah, that's to do with the 1D stabilization, isn't it? [957.06] Frank: Oh my God. [958.06] Frank: He's done well though, isn't he? [960.06] Jack: I mean, especially for something that weighs like a house brick. [964.06] Jack: I mean, the same shape as a coffee maker, it's pretty good. [968.06] Tony: He probably could fly a brick if he just lobbed it in the air. [973.06] Jack: Can you tell me from your brain? [975.06] Frank: Everyone's saying it's not a hardcore freestyle quad, [981.06] Frank: and that's a lot of what he was saying in the description comments on that video. [986.06] Frank: But if you compare it to a freestyle quad from five years ago, [993.06] Frank: then it's very, very, very good. [998.06] Curry: I think the problem with it is it's not because it's heavy [1002.06] Curry: and it's hard to freestyle with because you can get around that. [1005.06] Curry: It's the fact that if you're doing this sort of thing, [1007.06] Curry: you're more liable to crash it. [1009.06] Curry: And then, of course, five years ago it didn't explode [1012.06] Curry: into very expensive parts when you crashed it. [1016.06] Tony: Well, mostly props five years ago, wasn't it? [1019.06] Tony: It would just come back and there'd be just little nubs on there. [1022.06] Curry: Yeah. [1023.06] Curry: The whole leg breaks the DGI a bit easy, doesn't it? [1026.06] Jack: Yeah, they are literally made of cheese. [1028.06] Jack: What were you saying, Frank? [1029.06] Frank: I was going to say about your kiss quads around the airsoft arena. [1036.06] Frank: Just touching a wall and catching fire. [1039.06] Jack: They didn't even touch a wall, which just went on fire. [1042.06] Tony: Even though that was 18 empty SEs back in the day, not tuned properly. [1046.06] Tony: They had to be tuned. [1047.06] Tony: It had to be proper tuned for them not. [1050.06] Jack: You could tune that thing. [1051.06] Jack: It was made out of cardboard, paint, you know, with drawn, you know, [1057.06] Jack: it had been shown a picture of carbon fiber. [1060.06] Jack: Drawer. [1062.06] Jack: That was bad air, really. [1065.06] Tony: Yes, Fraser. [1066.06] Tony: Every time we do mention it, you've got to have a swig. [1069.06] Tony: It's still working. [1071.06] Frank: This is why I have orange juice. [1076.06] Frank: This is why I have orange juice this week. [1078.06] Frank: I've not fallen for that one again. [1079.06] Tony: Yeah. [1081.06] Tony: I've just drunk my riding horse. [1083.06] Jack: We're going to talk about the air speeder. [1084.06] Jack: That is basically why I'm here. [1086.06] Curry: Yes. [1087.06] Curry: Go on then, Jack. [1088.06] Curry: That's a great detail either. [1091.06] Curry: Tell us in, Frank. [1092.06] Curry: Tell us the story. [1094.06] Frank: Yes. [1095.06] Frank: So in June 2019, air speeder came over. [1103.06] Frank: We've had on the show and they've talked about kind of their long-term [1107.06] Frank: goals. [1108.06] Frank: They came over for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and brought basically [1114.06] Frank: one of their old models that's kind of a concepts demonstrator kind of [1121.06] Frank: thing and came along to demonstrate that for the journalists and everything [1129.06] Frank: along. [1133.06] Frank: Oh, dear. [1135.06] Frank: They applied for the permission from the CAA to demonstrate it because [1142.06] Frank: it's quite big and heavy and in front of people and things. [1148.06] Frank: CAA went, no, I don't think so. [1153.06] Frank: And then they kind of had a bit of negotiation sort of talks. [1158.06] Frank: Okay. [1159.06] Frank: These are the kind of restrictions we're going to have in place. [1161.06] Frank: We're only going to go this fast. [1163.06] Frank: We're only going to go in this area. [1165.06] Frank: We're only going to go this high. [1167.06] Frank: We're going to have these fail safes in place. [1171.06] Frank: We've got permissions from the Australian authorities to do things [1179.06] Frank: over in Australia. [1180.06] Frank: So, you know, we've got some kudos there and CAA eventually went, yeah, [1188.06] Frank: okay, you can come along on that basis. [1192.06] Frank: And they turned up on the day, CAA turned up on the day, said, can we [1199.06] Frank: have a look at it? [1200.06] Frank: And they went, no, we're about to fly it. [1202.06] Frank: We're busy. [1203.06] Frank: You can't look at it now. [1204.06] Frank: And then they took off and it was going and then they lost control. [1215.06] Tony: Wasn't it only supposed to be like a couple of feet off the floor? [1218.06] Tony: And that was it. [1219.06] Tony: They were saying you can fly it, but only a few meters. [1223.06] Tony: Yeah. [1224.06] Frank: There was a height limit to it and a speed limit and a distance and [1227.06] Frank: having spotters on all corners and things like this, which they weren't [1232.06] Frank: quite in the right places necessarily. [1235.06] Frank: They're in the beer tent. [1237.06] Frank: Pretty much. [1240.06] Frank: And, yeah, so it was on because, you know, they looked up the Ofcom [1246.06] Frank: regulations and so they had the R9 system, which they'd been flying on a [1254.06] Frank: Watt out in Australia, came over here, saw that the regulations were [1258.06] Frank: different, turned it down to not 25 milliwatts that's allowed, but they [1262.06] Frank: turned it down even further to 10 milliwatts and hadn't really done a [1268.06] Frank: proper range check on it. [1270.06] Frank: And also hadn't really done a proper range check on the fail safe button. [1275.06] Tony: Who would use their own fail safe button? [1278.06] Frank: It's almost like you should test your fail safes before you go and fly. [1283.06] Frank: Yeah. [1284.06] Curry: It's like I've lost control. [1287.06] Curry: I should press the fail safe button. [1289.06] Curry: Well, why is that not working anymore? [1290.06] Curry: That's weird. [1291.06] Curry: It's like I've lost control. [1293.06] Frank: It's all right. [1294.06] Frank: I'll fly it back line of sight. [1297.06] Tony: It comes back in range. [1300.06] Tony: I've not tested it. [1305.06] Frank: But unfortunately, they hadn't tested their fail safe either. [1314.06] Frank: It's not, not perhaps thoroughly enough because they'd set their fail safe to [1319.06] Frank: hold throttle set to stabilize and level. [1325.06] Frank: So as they were flying along, they had, you know, more than hover throttle. [1331.06] Frank: But it held that throttle and leveled out, which meant it just went up and up [1340.06] Frank: and up. [1341.06] Frank: I can't believe I'm going up until it ran out of battery and then went down and down [1351.06] Frank: and down. [1352.06] Tony: It got into some flight path, Gatwick flight path. [1356.06] Frank: It got high enough to get into the holding pattern for Gatwick airport. [1360.06] Frank: How high did it go? [1362.06] Curry: Was it, did I hear 8,000 feet or something? [1365.06] Frank: Let me, let me find you. [1367.06] Frank: The pictures are incredible. [1368.06] Curry: There was a question there from FPV SE. [1371.06] Curry: Is Australia a 915 megahertz country or an 868? [1376.06] Curry: Because it was taken out by phone. [1381.06] Frank: Yes. [1382.06] Frank: This may have also been an issue. [1384.06] Frank: Yes. [1385.06] Frank: That they didn't quite spot. [1386.06] Frank: So well done for spotting that one. [1389.06] Frank: Yep. [1390.06] Frank: That hasn't been spotted either. [1394.06] Frank: Here is, that's, that's how, how high it got. [1400.06] Frank: So yes, you can see ports there. [1403.06] Frank: Isle of Wight. [1405.06] Frank: Yeah. [1406.06] Frank: It got quite high before running out of battery. [1411.06] Curry: That's looked quite high. [1412.06] Curry: When you can start to see the curvature of the earth, you can tell you up there a bit. [1417.06] Tony: I can see a straight line there, mate. [1422.06] Frank: Another kind of thing sort of in the post-mortem reports. [1426.06] Frank: This is the Air Accident Investigation Bureau doing their report on it, [1430.06] Frank: because it, although it crashed within the boundary of the flying, [1437.06] Frank: well, not the flying field, but the airfield. [1440.06] Tony: It's almost as if it landed like Elon Musk's space. [1445.06] Tony: It was quite near, didn't it? [1447.06] Frank: It crashed 40 meters away from some houses that are the other side of the boundary, [1454.06] Frank: where some people saw something drop out the sky into the grounds [1460.06] Frank: and they went out and had a look. [1462.06] Frank: I thought, oh, you know, drones crashed, [1464.06] Frank: went and had a look and saw the size of it and went, [1467.06] Frank: I'm ringing the police now. [1469.06] Frank: That's a very big, very big thing to drop out the sky. [1473.06] Frank: It was, you know, not so wiring. [1479.06] Frank: But, yeah, I mean, there was other things as well in the video that they had on board, [1487.06] Frank: the onboard video, does also show that when they were flying it, [1491.06] Frank: they were flying outside of the display area, [1494.06] Frank: which is also not ideal when that's kind of a condition that you've come into CAA to let you do it. [1503.06] Curry: Would it be easier to list if they did anything right? [1506.06] Frank: I mean, they did contact the CAA and get them to, you know. [1513.06] Curry: And then try to get permission, yeah. [1516.06] Frank: But, yeah, the real clincher of why we want to have Jack on to talk about this one [1524.06] Frank: were some quite interesting photos of the inside of it. [1531.06] Frank: Which, you know, I hope, Jack, you're, you know, feeling quite strong, [1537.06] Frank: you know, a bit of a strong constitution to you at the moment. [1541.06] Jack: No, I'm mentally weak. [1543.06] Jack: I have been crying about missing Andy RC. [1547.06] Jack: We will be crying about that. [1549.06] Jack: Frank, I'm such a disposition. [1552.06] Jack: I threw poo at my wall earlier. [1555.06] Jack: That is, I'm mentally unstable. [1560.06] Frank: Prepare yourself to see some photos of what's been going on in here, [1567.06] Frank: because it is quite impressive. [1570.06] Tony: It is a bold card, so we're going to have to talk about what's going on in this picture. [1579.06] Frank: So this is, I mean, this is, you know, doesn't look amazing, [1583.06] Frank: because there's bits of components that are just kind of floating around. [1588.06] Tony: I've been on the team. [1591.06] Frank: I think that's probably fine, because that's probably like the epoxy stuff that's holding on antennas, right? [1598.06] Frank: But you've got a load of there. [1601.06] Curry: It's like an Arduino mini running anything that big. [1605.06] Curry: It's like, oh, it's all right. [1606.06] Curry: We've got 8-bit power behind us. [1608.06] Jack: I bet it's not even genuine Arduino, is it? [1610.06] Curry: We can count all the way up to 255 with this baby. [1614.06] Frank: But also, this is the kill switch. [1617.06] Frank: So it turns out the kill switch doesn't kill the power to the motors. [1625.06] Jack: It kills the power. [1626.06] Frank: It kills the power to the flight controller. [1632.06] Frank: So if it's that your ESC is not doing what it's meant to be doing, [1637.06] Frank: it's not going to help particularly. [1640.06] Curry: Maybe they got confused before with kill switches intended to kill the pilot. [1645.06] Curry: It was manned at the time. [1647.06] Frank: Yeah, because that's the other thing is a kill switch is not a fail safe. [1651.06] Frank: It's specifically a fail deadly. [1656.06] Frank: You know, it's not not ideal either. [1660.06] Frank: But here we go. Here we go. [1662.06] Frank: Here you go, Jack. [1663.06] Frank: Take a look at these. [1665.06] Jack: That looks like a run over badger. [1668.06] Frank: Notice this image on the left, which is an image of an XT-60, [1674.06] Frank: which some people would already have an issue with. [1677.06] (Patrons): But, you know, we'll give them a pass on that. [1682.06] Frank: But yeah, it does seem to be soldered the opposite way round [1687.06] Frank: from the way the silkscreen on the PCB is indicating. [1691.06] Frank: You've got the chamfers at that end of the silkscreen. [1696.06] Jack: I mean, why are you even using an XT-60 with something the size of a bathtub? [1702.06] Frank: It might not be doing the power that's actually doing the power of the quad, [1707.06] Frank: I would hope, but it might be doing something else. [1710.06] Frank: But either way, whoever designed the PCB or installed the XT-60, [1717.06] Frank: they had different ideas of what should be positive [1721.06] Frank: and what should be negative, which isn't good. [1724.06] Curry: It was some sort of diagram they could have followed. [1729.06] Jack: Because in a weird way, does anyone notice that the positive symbol is correct, [1736.06] Jack: but the outline of the XT-60 is incorrect? [1740.06] Jack: Does anyone notice that? [1742.06] Jack: So they soldered it correctly. [1744.06] Jack: Whoever designed the board doesn't know which way round an XT-60 goes. [1749.06] Frank: Hmm, it's not ideal, that. [1753.06] Jack: No, that is worrying. [1757.06] Jack: Worrying these out. [1758.06] Curry: That looks like one of Tony's ones. [1762.06] Jack: It looks like a rusty beaver's had a good old nibble on that, doesn't it? [1766.06] Frank: Yeah, I think this image on the right where you've got kind of bare wires showing [1774.06] Frank: and the insulation not quite going up to the end of it. [1777.06] Frank: I mean, they're saying here that it's burnt insulation, [1781.06] Frank: so basically a lot of this is saying in the crash, it crashed everything. [1788.06] Frank: And so you can't really tell what was, you know, [1793.06] Frank: so this was kind of the thing from the other day of saying something like a 92. [1798.06] Jack: It crashed so badly that the XT-60 spun around. [1801.06] Frank: No, that one, no. [1803.06] Frank: But I mean in the text, in the text of the document. [1806.06] Frank: So when they were going, oh, you know, let's try and work out [1809.06] Frank: what caused the problem to begin with. [1811.06] Frank: They couldn't do a lot of that because it was just in pieces. [1817.06] Frank: And what I'm kind of saying here is, you know, [1821.06] Frank: maybe it shorted something out in the crash. [1826.06] Frank: And so the high current burnt off the insulation. [1830.06] Frank: I mean, maybe Jack's got a bit more experience here, [1834.06] Frank: but to me that doesn't look like it's burnt. [1837.06] Frank: That just looks like you've not kind of soldered it, right? [1843.06] Jack: It's like little hamsters got in there and had a bit of a nibble, to be fair. [1846.06] Curry: It's like it's been frayed from movement unless it was just drilled right in the first place. [1851.06] Jack: But like, what is it meant to be soldered into? [1853.06] Jack: Because there's like, you know, there's... [1856.06] Frank: That doesn't look right, does it? [1859.06] Jack: Yeah, there's no fill there. [1863.06] Frank: Well, they did go through, because they were worried about there being dry joints. [1867.06] Frank: And so one of the things they did do was X-ray all the boards, [1875.06] Frank: particularly all these joints, to see if there were any dry joints. [1878.06] Frank: But they eliminated that and said, no, they didn't have any dry joints. [1881.06] Frank: It wasn't the neatest job, but there were at least good connections. [1887.06] Frank: But yeah, it doesn't look amazing. [1891.06] Frank: Jack's got much more of an opinion on this sort of thing than me. [1896.06] Frank: Do you want to critique this, get your fine art skills going? [1902.06] Jack: Well, it's a load of old bollocks, isn't it, really? [1905.06] Jack: That's what we would say. [1909.06] Jack: Like, you know, I mean, did that resistor, like, [1915.06] Jack: are they saying when it crashed, it crashed with so much heat, [1918.06] Jack: as it burned back into the world's atmosphere, [1922.06] Jack: that that resistor floated off a bit? [1926.06] Jack: Like, you know, you can see, like, on the wire, [1930.06] Jack: you can literally see there's no solder, a pinhole there. [1937.06] Jack: It's wedged in there, bit of insulation, and then just chewed. [1943.06] Jack: You know, I don't know whether that is melted or not. [1947.06] Jack: But, like, they didn't even clean their flocks. [1950.06] Jack: It's all manner of, like, just crap everywhere. [1956.06] Frank: Yeah. [1958.06] Frank: But his, where's this one? [1961.06] Frank: This is kind of the whole thing. [1965.06] Jack: It looks like a right old tumour, doesn't it? [1968.06] Jack: That's it. [1969.06] Frank: Fragments of receiver board is not something you want to see. [1975.4] Jack: Oh, my God. [1976.4] Frank: Yeah, it's not. [1978.4] Frank: It doesn't strike confidence. [1981.4] Jack: I'm all for a bit of scholastic, but when it looks like, [1985.4] Jack: you know, when it looks like a wasp's nest, [1990.77] Jack: or a kidney stone, I don't know. [1995.78] Jack: Hell, man. [1996.78] Jack: So I'm guessing these ethernet connectors are what they were connecting the arms with. [2001.78] Jack: Yes. [2003.78] Frank: Yeah. [2004.78] Frank: Which, yeah, that's another interesting thing to pick up on. [2010.78] Jack: So they're hoping that... [2012.78] Frank: This was their kill switch. [2014.78] Frank: So they had told the CIA that every spotter was going to have their own kill switch. [2018.78] Frank: There was going to be a button that they'd press and it'd stand at the corners. [2022.78] Frank: But actually they just hooked up a nano and probably a Zigbee or something like that. [2028.78] Frank: Or is it just a 433 packet radio, whatever it is. [2034.78] Frank: Hook that up to a computer. [2036.78] Frank: So the actual kill was not kind of just a button with each spotter. [2043.78] Frank: It was someone was typing into a laptop. [2045.78] Frank: Uh, kill. [2047.78] Frank: Stop. [2048.78] Frank: Do nothing. [2049.78] Frank: Enter. [2050.78] Frank: Oh, my God. [2051.78] Frank: That's scary. [2053.78] Frank: Not ideal. [2056.78] Tony: Yeah, maybe I'll take my pilot thing off that, off there. [2062.78] Tony: Okay. [2063.78] Tony: I've asked. [2064.78] Tony: I sent them a email. [2065.78] Jack: The worrying thing is like they asked for a government body and then they were like, [2070.78] Jack: can we have a look at it? [2071.78] Jack: And we're like, no, no, we're going to use it. [2072.78] Jack: It's like driving to the MOT center and being like, you know, oh, we're going to test you. [2076.78] Jack: No, no, you can't look at it. [2078.78] Jack: I've got to go to the shop soon, isn't it? [2080.78] Curry: Tell me it passed. [2082.78] Jack: Yeah. [2083.78] Curry: So what were the findings of this? [2085.78] Curry: Because surely this is like the worst thing ever. [2088.78] Curry: You can never fly again. [2089.78] Curry: Leave our country immediately as we'll have you executed. [2092.78] Jack: Can you believe hoping that little bit of plastic is going to keep that connector in there? [2097.78] Frank: Yeah. [2098.78] Frank: So you're saying about the Ethernet. [2099.78] Frank: So they've got an Ethernet breakout board. [2102.78] Jack: What is wrong with these people? [2103.78] Frank: Connected to their USB. [2104.78] Frank: And they've just kind of cabled by that. [2107.78] Jack: And there's hot blue. [2108.78] Jack: There's hot blue. [2109.78] Jack: Fantastic. [2110.78] Jack: Yeah. [2111.78] Jack: Ugh. [2112.78] Jack: Stomach stick wasn't enough. [2114.78] Frank: Um, yeah. [2115.78] Frank: It's not. [2116.78] Frank: It's not amazing. [2117.78] Frank: But, uh, yeah, so the CIA have a few, few recommendations. [2123.78] Frank: They have, uh, two and a half pages of A4 of very red safety recommendations, uh, ranging [2132.78] Frank: from, uh, it is recommended that Airspeeder change how they design, build, test, fly, operate, [2142.78] Frank: do things, um, to... [2146.78] Curry: Airspeeder, try not to be you anymore. [2149.78] Frank: A little bit of that. [2151.78] Frank: Um, things about, uh, you know, maybe we should make sure that we have, you know, people that [2159.38] Frank: kind of know how to spot these kinds of things. [2162.78] Frank: Um, so... [2165.78] Jack: I mean, the worrying thing is, is they're the professionals. [2169.78] Jack: So the CIA are probably like, so if they're professional, God knows what the hobbyists [2176.62] Jack: think are okay. [2178.02] Jack: So like, hang on. [2179.02] Jack: Let me, let me just get... [2180.02] Jack: So that weird white chewing gum stuff, um, is this stuff, uh, basically, so the problem [2187.86] Jack: is with hot blue is in, in the heat, it goes cold again, in cold, it, it, it comes off. [2195.9] Jack: You can also spill a load of alcohol or residue and it'll get in between, you know, a, a smooth [2202.66] Jack: surface and come off. [2204.58] Jack: And the worst thing is a lot of people like, you know, who mod consoles and stuff like [2208.18] Jack: that will add, um, hot glue as some sort of strain relief. [2214.3] Jack: And the problem is with that is that hot glue is not very flexible. [2219.18] Jack: So, uh, this, this is, this is what you're meant to use. [2222.58] Jack: It's, uh, it's like a white, a white glue. [2233.58] Jack: You can buy it in black as well. [2235.1] Jack: It's good stuff. [2236.1] Jack: Um, you know, the, you know, the Chinese girl that's, um, a bit of a, bit of a bimbo, uh, [2244.5] Jack: who, you know, with a cyborg, big boobs, I don't know what, what she calls herself. [2251.38] Frank: Sexy cyborg. [2252.38] Jack: Yes. [2253.38] Jack: That's it. [2254.38] Jack: Yes. [2255.38] Jack: She is leds and batteries into her shoes. [2259.26] Jack: Uh, she is a genius. [2261.42] Jack: Um, but yeah, it's, there you go. [2264.18] Jack: It's like white and sticky and it goes all mastic and it's great for strain relief because [2269.06] Jack: it it's got a little bit of give in it. [2272.26] Jack: And uh, I've, I've used this stuff, but, um, like Lord Christ, they are probably using [2278.38] Jack: it to hide the crimes of whatever they done to those connectors. [2284.02] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and edited to [2288.1] Frank: make sense when it played audio only sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the [2292.98] Frank: internet, forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded, playing on your device [2297.18] Frank: and is now playing in your ears. [2299.1] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons, consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [2304.78] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [2309.5] Curry: What was interesting about air speeder when, when they came on is before they did, I looked [2314.7] Curry: at, cause they had a big vlog about how they were developing this thing and it was essentially [2319.7] Curry: let a couple of guys out in a shed somewhere trying to make this thing fly. [2326.42] Curry: And just looked like a couple of idiots trying to make something fly. [2331.18] Curry: It's like, uh, if, if me and Tony got drunk and said, I wonder if we can make this fly. [2336.18] Curry: That's what it would be. [2337.18] Curry: But we kind of figured they sort of developed on from that. [2341.3] Curry: And it just looks like they've put a lovely veneer of like, Oh, look, here's this lovely [2345.46] Curry: racing shell. [2346.46] Curry: It doesn't look professional, but the insides are still a box of nails. [2350.82] Curry: Essentially. [2351.82] Curry: They haven't done anything differently there. [2352.98] Curry: It still looks like, [2353.98] Frank: I think it's worth bearing in mind that this probably was that same one. [2358.46] Frank: So this was back in 2019 and this was, uh, one that already was like a previous mark. [2366.94] Frank: Um, and I think it was just a kind of a concept one that they had probably sitting on a wall [2373.86] Frank: somewhere that they knew could fly. [2375.94] Frank: And so when someone came along and said, can you show it off? [2379.9] Frank: And he, can you demonstrate something? [2382.58] Frank: They dug this off the wall and went, well, this one flies. [2386.3] Frank: So we can do that one, but I think it's kind of a good illustration of just because you've [2392.74] Frank: done something before and it's worked doesn't mean that you can assume it will work perfectly [2398.62] Frank: again. [2399.62] Frank: And, you know, you do have to kind of think, like, have I actually made sure that everything [2405.74] Frank: is okay? [2406.74] Frank: Have I actually tested the fail safe stony? [2410.1] Frank: Um, is there actually, although I'm confident in this in the way I usually use it, am I [2420.5] Frank: doing anything differently here that I should maybe test before I do it, you know, when you're [2425.1] Frank: starting to use a different radio settings, if you're starting to use a different environment [2431.42] Frank: and a different team of people and different weather and all these kinds of things, it [2437.26] Frank: feels like you've done it before because it's just fine. [2440.5] Frank: The thing that you've been flying, you know, years ago, and it was fine, but it cannot [2446.46] Frank: be. [2447.46] Frank: Um, there can be kind of all these things that add up and make it a completely different [2451.98] Frank: situation. [2452.98] Curry: Um, maybe they have the best tinted spectacles. [2456.26] Curry: I know I had that with my tricopter. [2457.86] Curry: I used to think tricopter flies really great. [2459.94] Curry: And I tried flying it a couple of years ago. [2461.38] Curry: It's like, Oh, this is horrible. [2462.38] Curry: This flies like a piece of crap. [2464.42] Curry: Things have moved on. [2465.58] Jack: When you get back straight line, this is the stuff that you should use same brand, but [2470.18] Jack: it's the K 1668 and this, this hardens and it's able to be better removed so that then [2479.7] Jack: you can put on a new antenna because obviously you don't need the flex for the, you don't [2485.66] Jack: want the flex in case the connector comes off and then it's not visibly the U L connectors [2493.5] Jack: not physically on there. [2495.26] Jack: Correct. [2496.26] Jack: So you stick it on and then stick it on with this is the yellow stuff. [2499.3] Jack: You can buy a cheaper version of it from bang good. [2506.42] Jack: And it is this stuff and I think it's called antenna fixing glue motif RC. [2514.9] Jack: There you go. [2515.9] Jack: Oh God, this is horrendous. [2518.9] Jack: But there you go. [2520.66] Jack: Same stuff. [2522.3] Jack: But yeah, please do stuff. [2524.54] Jack: Right. [2525.54] Jack: It kind of helps. [2527.18] Jack: That's why Frank's rat nest hasn't exploded yet combined with me not flying it also. [2533.54] Jack: Yeah. [2534.54] Jack: So well, you went to an event where that was the only thing that did work and you had to [2538.86] Jack: fly that. [2539.86] Jack: And I was like, why did you do that? [2541.98] Frank: Yeah, that happened. [2543.66] Frank: Yeah, it was the only thing that did because I didn't fly it before it wasn't broken yet. [2548.54] Frank: Yeah. [2549.54] Jack: Yes. [2550.9] Jack: Yes. [2553.9] Frank: Yeah. [2554.9] Frank: When in the chat says no one expects it to be more than the prototype. [2557.66] Frank: But if you're going to do something, start with doing it professional as best you can. [2562.3] Frank: Yeah. [2563.3] Frank: I mean, I think, you know, when you're doing something in the middle of nowhere out in [2566.42] Frank: the middle of Australia, I imagine you can kind of feel like, you know, we don't have [2571.62] Frank: to be too strict about it because we're not going to be near anyone. [2574.58] Frank: And then, you know, it starts out as a temporary solution. [2578.22] Frank: And then you forget that it's a temporary solution. [2582.82] Frank: And then, you know, then you end up maybe forgetting that and don't do anything about [2589.34] Frank: it. [2590.34] Frank: And it becomes a permanent solution. [2591.34] Frank: That's that's something I've seen happen in multiple situations. [2597.1] Frank: And it always causes problems, you know, when you get comfortable with things, that's when [2601.66] Frank: it bites you in the ass. [2603.3] Jack: Yeah. [2604.3] Jack: Or another thing is build it, build it as best you can, even if it is the prototype, [2612.18] Jack: because they might look exactly the same on the outside because, you know, the cases get [2617.22] Jack: made and you've got like one that tests, they look exactly the same and you accidentally [2621.74] Jack: give someone the wrong one. [2623.3] Jack: But it doesn't matter because you built it as best you can with the same stuff. [2628.94] Jack: So that is a classic. [2631.98] Frank: I don't know. [2632.98] Frank: I mean, when you like prototype all over it, I mean, it does. [2635.98] Frank: I guess that's the right approach to take when you're in a professional environment. [2640.82] Frank: But I think if you're doing something and I think this probably has, I mean, maybe not, [2647.26] Frank: but I'm most businesses even start out with, like Carrie says, a couple of guys with a [2654.34] Frank: drink going, ah, let's try doing this, this will be fun. [2660.94] Frank: And you know, then it gets carried away and goes on something else. [2666.14] Frank: So yeah, so I think there is a time and a place for doing a bodge job and getting something [2686.86] Frank: to happen without worrying too much about it. [2689.62] Frank: But I think you do have to kind of be very aware that if it's a bodge job, it needs to [2697.94] Frank: not be carrying on. [2699.94] Jack: Only kill you and no one else. [2702.18] Frank: Yeah. [2703.18] Tony: Do you imagine if there was someone on board that was just going half and half and half [2708.3] Jack: and half? [2709.3] Jack: Oh my God, that would be horrendous. [2711.14] Curry: Oh, mate. [2713.14] Curry: I couldn't imagine agreeing to be on board if someone else is flying it remotely. [2717.26] Curry: That would be the most scariest ride I could ever imagine. [2721.3] Jack: I also hate the idea that someone had to like write a kill command. [2726.62] Jack: Hang on a minute. [2727.62] Jack: It's going out of control. [2728.62] Jack: Let me just go over here. [2729.62] Jack: Open the laptop. [2730.62] Jack: I know. [2731.62] Jack: Hang on. [2732.62] Jack: I put that in the wrong place. [2736.98] Jack: Like enter and then hope it's still got a signal. [2742.42] Frank: The other thing was they did have a backup Taranis, they were flying it with the Taranis [2746.94] Frank: with the R9 module on 10 milliwatts and they had a backup Taranis which they left behind [2753.98] Frank: in the shed where they were storing everything. [2758.42] Frank: They didn't have it with them when they were flying. [2760.7] Frank: So they couldn't just turn it on and make it go. [2764.9] Frank: Wow. [2765.9] Frank: Yeah. [2766.9] Tony: Back up. [2767.9] Frank: Wow. [2768.9] Frank: Again, another lesson when you do have a backup, not only do you need to test all your [2773.66] Frank: fail safes and backups, Tony, but you also need to have it there and with you. [2780.62] Curry: I'm not sure you can bind the R9 to multiple features. [2786.54] Curry: They may have had a spare radio, but are they waiting for the other guy to chuck in the [2789.58] Curry: R9 module over and plug it back in? [2791.62] Frank: Because there was the mark on the kind of picture of the whole thing saying missing [2795.74] Frank: R9 receiver. [2799.3] Frank: So I think maybe they had two R9 receivers and then it's the Arduino Nano flight controller [2805.62] Frank: that's looking at both of them and working out what it should be doing, I guess. [2811.18] Curry: I'm not going to say there's a course code where it says comment to flight control stuff [2817.26] Curry: or something like that. [2819.26] Frank: Yeah. [2820.26] Frank: I did email Airspeeder last week asking for comments and updates and they did offer to [2830.34] Frank: get in touch and talk about it, but I've just been too busy and then Jack came on so I haven't [2836.18] Frank: spoken to them. [2837.18] Tony: Have people asked to get back on and see? [2840.18] Tony: Yeah. [2841.18] Frank: I mean, that was kind of what I was asking them is like, you know, if you got... [2845.34] Jack: Please come on and defend yourself. [2846.42] Jack: We'd like to shut up your fluffy head prick. [2848.42] Jack: He worked there. [2849.42] Frank: It has been kind of all over Facebook and, you know, even being a faded Zoom webinar [2858.18] Frank: on it and there's been quite a lot of coverage that's rumbled on for quite a while along [2864.06] Frank: in the community. [2865.06] Frank: So I think it would be kind of good to see kind of what they've got to say for themselves. [2872.74] Jack: The only good thing is it probably won't happen again now. [2876.82] Curry: Because they'll be refused permission every time. [2881.86] Jack: Shut up, Curry. [2884.94] Curry: We should explain that when they did come on, the accident already happened, but we [2888.78] Curry: were asked not to discuss. [2890.22] Curry: Obviously that the findings weren't brought forward yet, so that was not a topic on the [2895.46] Curry: table. [2896.46] Curry: But yeah, it'd be great to have them back and tell us what they've done differently [2898.82] Curry: since that time. [2901.46] Jack: You know, I mean, I get it. [2904.02] Jack: But there seems to be a lot of ups there, like all in one big I think kind of the very [2912.02] Frank: early things were, you know, a lot of student projects were kind of involved in putting [2919.94] Frank: that all together. [2920.94] Frank: There's a kind of very first prototype demonstrator kind of thing. [2926.54] Frank: But at least from what I can tell from all the kind of social media posts and everything [2933.34] Frank: they've been releasing more recently, and, you know, when they came on, they were talking [2937.34] Frank: about, you know, they've got actual fully manned pilots actually involved in it. [2947.54] Frank: And actual aerospace engineers with some professional experience and automotive engineers as well. [2956.34] Jack: Do we need our disclaimer? [2958.34] Jack: Any views on this show or in fact, as a person who may not refer to the views of others, [2968.34] Curry: please don't do this. [2970.34] Jack: It was weird, you can't. [2973.34] Curry: Jack's in charge to him. [2975.34] Curry: He's lying. [2977.34] Tony: No, he panics and gets his lawyers out. [2981.34] Tony: And they're not a pair of these trousers. [2985.34] Frank: There's nothing here that is the Air Accident Investigation Bureau report that's publicly [2991.34] Frank: available. [2992.34] Frank: So I can't imagine and, you know, nothing that hasn't been plastered all over Facebook [2997.34] Frank: and being, you know, there's been the BMFA webinar. [3002.34] Frank: I think if the BMFA can talk about it, I think we can probably risk it as well. [3007.34] Jack: Yeah. [3009.62] Jack: Well, all we can officially say is, come on, Matt and ladies. [3013.62] Curry: I wonder if this is this is a problem because as I remember it, it's like the whole airspeed [3019.62] Curry: idea is like we've got this vision. [3022.62] Curry: We want this to happen. [3024.62] Curry: It's not like it's not coming from a technical standpoint. [3026.62] Curry: It's coming from I want this to happen. [3028.62] Curry: Boys, make it happen. [3030.62] Curry: Here's 50 quid. [3031.62] Curry: Make me a drone. [3032.62] Curry: And look, it flies. [3035.62] Curry: Give us more money and we'll create an amazing vision. [3039.62] Frank: I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if that's kind of the thing is that, you know, they're [3044.62] Frank: their product. [3045.62] Frank: They're what they're trying to build is more the race than the vehicle. [3052.62] Frank: So I think, you know, they need to have something there that flies. [3057.62] Frank: This kind of gives you an idea of what it is. [3060.62] Frank: They're looking for people to form teams to build and enter because I think that's probably [3069.62] Frank: what they're trying to do is, you know, this is the kind of the idea of we want. [3076.62] Frank: This is what we're trying to do. [3078.62] Frank: And they're building something that communicates that without necessarily being that. [3084.62] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [3085.62] Curry: So that's that's great when you're in the outback. [3087.62] Curry: But it sounds like if they've got actual aerospace people working on it now, then obviously [3092.62] Curry: they've got enough stuff going on or some sort of backing to say that, OK, do something proper [3099.62] Curry: now. [3101.62] Jack: Do you reckon we could actually build something better or do you reckon we'd f*** it up? [3106.62] Curry: No, we could do something better. [3107.62] Curry: It'd definitely be soldered better. [3108.62] Curry: We'd get Tony to do it. [3110.62] Curry: I think it'd be fun to make a big scale or something. [3117.62] Curry: But, you know, I wouldn't get in it. [3120.62] Curry: I fly FPV not because I want to fly full size, but because I don't have the risk. [3125.62] Tony: I've seen so much fly in full size on Facebooks today. [3130.62] Tony: Frank, have you got that? [3133.62] Curry: I mean, this. [3135.62] Curry: I thought this was Tony on his ex-class for a start. [3139.62] Curry: Crazy thing. [3140.62] Tony: I can't believe. [3142.62] Tony: Well, I just can't believe. [3144.62] Tony: I have thought about doing this, but after seeing this and the prop failing. [3151.62] Tony: No. [3154.62] Tony: Yeah. [3156.62] Frank: Even the doc's concerned. [3158.62] Frank: That's not good. [3159.62] Frank: That's not going to happen. [3161.62] Tony: So that was someone hanging underneath a big copter. [3166.62] Curry: It's like one of those big DVR dropped sprayers. [3169.62] Curry: They can carry quite a payload, can't they? [3172.62] Curry: Like a small person before one of the motors gives out completely. [3181.62] Tony: Is anyone ever going to go in one? [3184.62] Tony: They've got the Ehang and all that lot in China and stuff. [3188.62] Tony: I don't know. [3190.62] Jack: It will get to a point where it will just be like we move into electrical cars. [3196.62] Jack: And then one day in the future, they will be the flying cars. [3200.62] Jack: I guess. [3201.62] Jack: I don't know, but it's very normal and they'll be fail safe. [3206.62] Jack: And, you know, we need weird film where, you know, you crash and your car fills [3212.62] Jack: with foam and I have to dig you out of the foam before you suffocate to death. [3216.62] Jack: What was that film called again? [3218.62] Curry: I'm actually not trying to stress you out. [3224.62] Jack: The use of three seashells or something. [3228.62] Curry: No one understands how you wipe your arse with seashells still. [3231.62] Curry: I was never explained. [3236.62] Tony: We live near the coast, Jack. [3238.62] Tony: Don't you give it a go yet? [3240.62] Jack: No, not yet. [3242.62] Jack: I mean, I think... [3243.62] Jack: It's almost as if it's a helicopter. [3246.62] Frank: I was going to say, you know, the sort of little helicopters, there's quite a few, [3253.62] Frank: well, at least one single point of failure. [3257.62] Frank: I mean, as much as N.J. will be on here saying, oh, the helicopter is very safe. [3264.62] Frank: He has not come back to me. [3267.62] Curry: You can do auto rotation landing, can't you? [3270.62] Curry: Yeah, if the engine fails, it's fine. [3272.62] Frank: You can manage your energy and land from that. [3277.62] Frank: But if a rotor fails, then that's it. [3284.62] Frank: It's the same with an aeroplane, really. [3286.62] Frank: Like, if your main spar for teams... [3288.62] Curry: Yeah, like the wings fall off, you've got problems. [3291.62] Jack: Yeah. [3292.62] Frank: Yeah, you've just become a missile. [3298.0] Curry: I think the difference here is, like, we're prepared to put ourselves [3303.0] Curry: in passenger jets where they do a lot of miles and they do a lot of checks [3307.0] Curry: and they've got very professional pilots, mostly, that don't get pissed all the time. [3312.0] Curry: It's a little bit different when some guy's written some code that you haven't seen. [3317.0] Curry: It's like, it's all right, it'll fly for you. [3319.0] Curry: Tony's like, you haven't tested the fail saver. [3321.0] Curry: If you know, don't worry, Tony, it'll be fine. [3324.0] Curry: So you're safe. [3326.0] Curry: It's just like, oh, OK, I'll get in there. [3329.0] Curry: Because, like, the thing about autonomous vehicles is, like, at some point, [3334.0] Curry: someone's going to have to write the code to say, OK, the car's going to crash. [3338.0] Curry: We can save the driver or we can save the pedestrians. [3341.0] Curry: Which way do we go? [3343.0] Curry: I know. [3344.0] Curry: It's just like the modern-day trolley problem, isn't it? [3348.0] Frank: Yeah. [3350.0] Curry: Oh, no, the autonomous quad vehicle carrying Tony's going to crash. [3354.0] Curry: We can maybe make a landing, but there's a possibility it could take out [3358.0] Curry: that orphanage full of children, or we could just ditch him here in the sea [3361.0] Curry: and drown him for sure. [3362.0] Curry: What's the safe thing to do? [3364.0] Curry: So I don't know. [3365.0] Curry: I trust that code. [3367.0] Curry: Don't drown me, please. [3368.0] Curry: Tony's going into the sea. [3369.0] Curry: That's it. [3371.0] Jack: Tony wants to be with the fishes that he doesn't eat. [3375.0] Tony: I can swim. [3377.0] Tony: I can swim. [3379.0] Frank: Yeah, I think Caroline's brought up the 737 MAX software. [3384.0] Frank: Like, someone read that. [3386.0] Frank: Oh, yeah. [3388.0] Frank: Well, I mean, that's that's I mean, most [3392.0] Frank: now, at least most engineering failures are [3397.0] Frank: of the user interface guiding people in the wrong direction. [3402.0] Jack: And, you know, the sat-navs are leading everyone into rivers and stuff. [3406.0] Tony: Yeah. [3409.0] Tony: I can't believe that. [3411.0] Tony: Yeah. [3412.0] Tony: This looks like the sea. [3413.0] Curry: It says keep going. [3417.0] Curry: I think it's stopping. [3419.0] Frank: Yeah. [3420.0] Frank: But I think, you know, that's kind of the thing, isn't it? [3423.0] Frank: Once you've got enough money in the situation to actually [3429.0] Frank: engineer things properly and have custom-made PCBs [3433.0] Frank: that, you know, are actually designed for the job by people that know which way [3437.0] Frank: around the connectors go and which connectors are maybe more reliable [3441.0] Frank: than others. [3443.0] Jack: I've still got to learn key cards. [3445.0] Jack: I still want to make my own board. [3448.0] Tony: And, Jason, I'm coming on next week just to explain helicopter safety to Frank. [3453.0] Frank: Yeah, I know. [3455.0] Frank: I know. [3456.0] Frank: It's like there's there's things you can do when, like I said, the engine [3461.0] Frank: goes out. [3462.0] Frank: You're fine. [3463.0] Frank: It's everything else that's if it goes as bad before that sky. [3469.0] UNKNOWN: Yes. [3470.0] Curry: That's where the sort of safety checks come in and out you in reliability. [3474.0] Curry: And then you start talking about statistics, don't you? [3476.0] Curry: And say, well, compared to a car, you're much safer in that sort of thing. [3481.0] Jack: Yeah. [3483.0] Curry: People that like wingsuit flying, you're really safe. [3488.0] Curry: Smacking mountains. [3491.0] Jack: Yeah. [3492.0] Jack: I quite like the idea of turning myself into a flying squirrel. [3496.0] Tony: Have you seen the flying squirrel guy? [3500.0] Tony: He jumped out of a helicopter into another plane. [3504.0] Jack: That was bad. [3505.0] Tony: He landed into a cardboard boxes. [3508.0] Tony: He didn't have a parachute or anything. [3509.0] Tony: He literally jumped out of a helicopter, flew down into I think it was 30 [3514.0] Tony: grand's worth of cardboard boxes he spent. [3517.0] Tony: And he just landed with no. [3520.0] Tony: He just went. [3522.0] Tony: Into a car. [3523.0] Curry: I can call that landing, technically. [3525.0] Curry: It's just like. [3526.0] Tony: He landed. [3529.0] Jack: I was hoping you were going to come on because I had my teeth cleaned and [3532.0] Jack: whitened today. [3534.0] Jack: And when I got out and I took my mask off to like have a look in the [3540.0] Jack: in the lift, I looked and then all my gums are like gently bleeding. [3544.0] Jack: And it is like all the light onto my teeth. [3547.0] Jack: It was the most horrific thing ever. [3549.0] Jack: I haven't dyed my beard yet, but I need to grow it more first, I think. [3554.0] Frank: Fraser says helicopter safety is easy. [3556.0] Frank: Just don't go near the things. [3560.0] Jack: Frank, who used to be. [3562.0] Jack: Was it you or was it Sheldon? [3564.0] Jack: Like I think it was Sheldon. [3566.0] Jack: He like knew someone who flew helicopters in the in the military. [3570.0] Jack: And he's like, why do you why aren't you doing that privately or professionally [3574.0] Jack: or doing anymore? [3575.0] Jack: He goes because they're really dangerous. [3578.0] Jack: No one should ever get in there. [3581.0] Frank: FVSE said, as we know from video games and movies, helicopters all crash. [3587.0] Jack: Yeah, very cool. [3590.0] Jack: Yeah, anything that can't stand you flying over a beam of radiation. [3596.0] Tony: Yeah, there's quite a few famous people have been killed in helicopter crashes. [3603.0] Frank: And this is why a line tracks never turned up again. [3607.0] Jack: They hate me anyway. [3608.0] Tony: They do hate you. [3610.0] Jack: All right. [3611.0] Jack: Wrap it up. [3612.0] Jack: Thank you. [3613.0] Jack: You've been listening to let drone out. [3615.0] Jack: Thank you so much for all your donations and everything. [3618.0] Jack: Thank you so much for all our Patreons. [3620.0] Jack: We love you guys. [3623.0] Jack: And most of all, we love our little Tony. [3627.0] Tony: For sure. [3628.0] Tony: Bye. [3629.0] Tony: Everyone's listening again. [3632.0] Jack: Andrew Stash Frank. [3633.0] Jack: Bye. [3634.0] Jack: And I've been bright until I fly. [3636.0] Jack: Remember, kids, the knobbly bit of the X-T60 is the positive end, y'all. [3643.0] (Patrons): Bye. [3644.0] (Patrons): Bye. [3645.0] (Patrons): Telemetry lost.
