[183.22] Curry: What we're looking at here is footage from September 2012.
[188.22] Curry: I think it was Rich's idea.
[190.22] Curry: He said, let's get together.
[191.22] Curry: And we were talking about, I think it was the first-person view.
[197.22] Curry: It was Simon Dale's shoot-off forum website, FPV.
[202.22] Curry: Maybe FPV.
[203.22] Curry: Was it FPV?
[204.22] Curry: Okay.
[205.22] Curry: Okay.
[206.22] Curry: Before it became FPV Hub.
[207.22] Curry: And we all got together in a forum, decided to try and meet up and fly some stuff.
[211.22] Curry: As you can see, everybody in the world owned a DJI F450 because that's what your quad was back in 2011.
[219.22] Curry: 2012.
[220.22] Curry: And it had everyone except for me.
[223.22] Curry: Everyone except for you who just said, there's a spy hawk there.
[227.22] Curry: This is a stunning round.
[228.22] Curry: That is Rich's 20-foot pole, which meant we were spotted by a new forest ranger and asked to leave because you're not allowed to fly in the new forest.
[237.22] Curry: So then we went to Southampton and you can just see that we're basically just trying to find places to fly and basically hang out together.
[244.22] Curry: Early days, I thought this was buttery smooth.
[247.22] Curry: This was flying on my tricopter.
[250.22] Curry: This is where we ended up.
[251.22] Curry: This is Great Hazley, the village of Great Hazley where Rich was living.
[257.22] Curry: And this is the cricket ground.
[258.22] Curry: You can see we've got a big flight line there.
[260.22] Curry: We've got a lot of stuff.
[261.22] Curry: This is what it turned into.
[263.22] Curry: This was the pinnacle of the event.
[266.22] Curry: And we've got at least five planes in the air here.
[269.22] Curry: There's some more buzzing about.
[270.22] Curry: We've got this is a guy called Badlands video.
[274.22] Curry: This was like the best day ever.
[275.22] Curry: We just had the great conditions.
[277.22] Curry: We spent all day just flying in formation, chasing each other around, having a great old day.
[283.22] Curry: And we used to do these things two to three times a year.
[288.22] Curry: Rich would basically book the cricket club.
[290.22] Curry: The cricket club loved us because we bought revenue into their club.
[294.22] Curry: And you can see the area.
[295.22] Curry: We could just fly for a good couple of kilometers, branding a circle, never see another thing.
[301.22] Curry: And we had lots of planes out because everybody was using like someone 5.8 videos, someone 2.4, someone 1.3.
[308.22] Curry: Different types of control really helped us get a lot of guys in the air.
[313.22] Curry: And a lot of people on the exact same frequency.
[316.22] Curry: Yeah.
[317.22] Curry: And this is we did some great things as well.
[320.22] Curry: This is me trying to fly at night with my camera not focusing and having zero ground details.
[325.22] Curry: This is Rich's from his point of view.
[328.22] Curry: That's my plane in front, which just looks like that little thing.
[331.22] Curry: That was absolutely hilarious.
[332.22] Curry: The flight there and trying to get back and having people shouting at us, trying to get like over trees and not crash and stuff.
[340.22] Curry: Just fantastic, fantastic memories all the way through.
[344.22] Curry: I don't know if that was the one he was probably at because he was complaining about my story.
[349.22] Curry: And this is just all the embarrassing clips I found of Rich.
[351.22] Curry: This is like I literally gave my plane to hold and he dropped it, which was, you know, typical.
[358.22] Curry: There you go.
[359.22] Curry: The soundboard.
[360.22] Curry: And then, of course, we've got the great Buffalo 79 launches.
[363.22] Curry: To be fair, everybody tried throwing this.
[367.22] Curry: That was the first time you broke it, though.
[369.22] Curry: No, no.
[370.22] Curry: Neil threw it first and he broke it.
[372.22] Curry: But this is it in slo-mo, just a great example of why you don't throw a plane upwards.
[378.22] Curry: Yeah, but look at that technique.

[389.22] Curry: And then we had a great video series where this is the thing that makes me laugh every time.
[396.22] Curry: If you had sound, Rich is saying, I'll catch it.
[399.22] Curry: And then you hear this little scream come out of him as he tries to run away.
[407.22] Curry: And on that very same day, he tried it again.
[409.22] Curry: He was like, I'll get it.
[410.22] Curry: I'll catch my own plane.
[413.22] Curry: And then twice in one day, I let him try again.
[416.22] Curry: I'll butter things here.
[418.22] Curry: I knew this was going to happen.
[420.22] Curry: I just knew this was going to happen.
[422.22] Curry: I have all the video on my hard drive.
[425.22] BlueOwl: How many times did it have to happen until you stopped trusting him?
[430.22] Curry: What started to happen is Rich would run out in the field and say, I'll get it.
[434.22] Curry: And I would just divert and come around and land somewhere else.
[441.22] Richard Robinson: That whole thing started with me catching my own plane.
[444.22] Richard Robinson: And I put the video out and I was like, yeah, let's go.
[447.22] Richard Robinson: And then you tried the same thing.
[449.22] Richard Robinson: No video was ever produced.
[452.22] Curry: I put a video of me catching my own plane.
[454.22] Curry: I also caught your easy star perfectly on that very same day.
[459.22] Curry: And then you suggested it was all about the skill of the pilot, not about the skill of the catcher.
[464.22] Curry: True.
[465.22] Richard Robinson: That's exactly it.
[466.22] Richard Robinson: Because you've got to come in and fly and be as slow as you can.
[470.22] Richard Robinson: It's really cool to see those old clips.

[477.22] Curry: There are some amazing night flights that Richard did.
[481.22] Curry: Perhaps may seem a bit naughty now, especially the one over Southampton.
[485.22] Curry: There's also a 10 kilometer flight, which we call the 10 kilometer flight by proxy.
[490.22] Curry: Whereas he had like four people trying to explain to him the way back
[495.22] Curry: and all had different ideas of directions to go.
[498.22] Curry: And you can just hear all these voices talking about.
[500.22] Curry: No, that's not the way.
[501.22] Richard Robinson: It's this way.
[502.22] Richard Robinson: I don't want to offend anyone.
[503.22] Richard Robinson: I'm prison company excluded, of course.
[505.22] Richard Robinson: OK.
[506.22] Richard Robinson: But this game, this whole FPV thing is about obsessive compulsive disordered people.

[511.22] Richard Robinson: And we just got to be honest about that.
[513.22] Richard Robinson: You've got three or four OCD people.
[515.22] Richard Robinson: One has actually put a grand up in the sky, breaking every single aviation rule there is.
[520.22] Richard Robinson: Crossing a Berkshire, no Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire military flight line.
[525.22] Richard Robinson: I'm trying to get 10 kilometres out for the very first time.
[529.22] Richard Robinson: Anyway, I hope your video doesn't get demonetised or anything.
[532.22] Richard Robinson: We should maybe read the disclaimer since we could be talking about this.

[551.22] Curry: And I thought it was a good opportunity to reminisce about the good old days,
[554.22] Curry: is how we got going with Mad Dogs and what sort of stuff we used to get up to there.
[560.22] Curry: Because the people coming along to it now, it's a very different story than it was back in 2012 to sort of 2016 when we were doing this.
[569.22] Richard Robinson: First of all, the idea with Mad Dogs is that we would go out through all weathers at any time for any reason.
[576.22] Richard Robinson: We were junkies.
[577.22] Richard Robinson: And the amount of time, my marriage never worked out.
[580.22] Richard Robinson: It didn't survive it.
[582.22] Richard Robinson: But Wayne is still happily married and I'm sure everyone else is as well.
[586.22] Richard Robinson: We put a hell of a lot of time into building flight controllers, programming, opening APIs and trying to get things working.
[594.22] Richard Robinson: And it's not like today where you just buy things off the shelf and do a bit of Twiksdix.
[598.22] Richard Robinson: And I'm not even talking about those who pick up their DJI stock.
[601.22] Richard Robinson: No offence again.
[602.22] Richard Robinson: I own two.
[605.22] Richard Robinson: But if you were going to throw something up in the sky back then, there was this whole movement going on on the web,
[612.22] Richard Robinson: yet you couldn't actually connect with anyone who was doing it.
[615.22] Richard Robinson: And I wasn't exactly like a new age sort of basement simp who could just be on his own.
[624.22] Richard Robinson: I wanted to have fun with everyone else.
[626.22] Richard Robinson: He knows the words.
[628.22] Richard Robinson: Listen, everything is present company excluded again.
[634.22] Jack: In generation X or are you a proper boomer?
[636.22] Jack: I can't tell.
[637.22] Richard Robinson: I'm a gen X.

[650.22] Richard Robinson: Anyway, so we all got together and thank goodness and Hello to Ian as well.
[657.22] Richard Robinson: We put this whole thing together through FPV hub, which was what's the thing you called it before?
[663.22] Richard Robinson: It was FPV.
[666.22] Curry: What happened is everybody knows Simon Dale, who had FPV.
[671.22] Curry: Yeah.
[672.22] Curry: First person view.co.uk.
[674.22] Curry: He put this forum out and he paid for the web hosting.
[677.22] Curry: I think he still pays for the hosting of FPV hub.
[679.22] Curry: But what had happened is people kept posting flights that were not quite legal.
[684.22] Curry: And it wasn't like, you know, people were flying into babies and stuff.
[687.22] Curry: It's just I didn't have a spotter or I went behind a tree.
[690.22] Curry: And he got a bit twitchy about like, I don't want this associated with my commercial site.
[694.22] Curry: So it became FPV hub and hence distance.
[697.22] Curry: And after that, we could stop pretending we had this spotter was behind me.
[701.22] Curry: You probably can see that sort of stuff.
[703.22] Curry: And we could just get on with it.
[705.22] Richard Robinson: When there's enough time and distance between us all to get really honest about it.
[709.22] Richard Robinson: Okay.
[710.22] Richard Robinson: So FPV Org, we're trying to in the early days become the voice of FPV and the whole model thing then.
[719.22] Richard Robinson: Because they saw this burgeoning industry.
[721.22] Richard Robinson: They'd seen an amazing future where millions of people were going to invest in this new technology.
[727.22] Richard Robinson: What they didn't actually foresee was the regulations that were going to follow and just bugger the whole thing up.
[736.22] Richard Robinson: So I think Simon was pretty keen to become, you know, when you a new industry starts, you'll get the top monopolizing business will then become the regulator would then become who would be in cahoots with with the CIA and everyone else involved.
[750.22] Richard Robinson: And granted, I mean, Simon did a lot of work trying to get rid of the word drone and talk about FPV and piloting and all that sort of stuff.
[759.22] Richard Robinson: But I think he he was hoping to be the first actor in the whole game.
[764.22] Richard Robinson: And I could ask to him.
[765.22] Richard Robinson: I mean, he imported stuff from all over the world to get the thing going.
[770.22] Richard Robinson: And we I mean, we started I think Mad Dogs.
[773.22] Richard Robinson: The first one was the 11th of June 2012.
[777.22] Richard Robinson: Is that correct?
[779.22] Curry: It was it was in my video as September 2012, certainly in 2012.
[784.22] Curry: And I already had a tricopter and a 450 then.
[787.22] Curry: So it was it was somewhere into 2012.
[790.22] Richard Robinson: That's correct. Yeah.
[791.22] Richard Robinson: So so the whole idea was just to be able to fly with other people.
[794.22] Richard Robinson: And we obviously those those weekends and they normally turn into or they often turn into all weekends would just be where we would learn about flight controllers and what this one's doing and what that's doing.
[807.22] Richard Robinson: And it was an amazing, amazing time.
[809.22] Richard Robinson: You know, I think it was.
[811.22] Richard Robinson: And yeah, I kind of missed that, to be honest.
[814.22] Richard Robinson: I'm actually thinking now putting together a long range beast that I can fly from an undisclosed location in Africa.
[824.22] Curry: Yeah, it was we did lots of stuff.
[827.22] Curry: Hey, it's David Wintersdale.
[829.22] Curry: Oh, he was responsible for all the tricopters.
[833.22] Richard Robinson: But some of the early days, I mean, David Wintersdale is part of the.
[839.22] Richard Robinson: The triune god of FVV business.
[843.22] Curry: Yeah, if it looks now, look, there's my my my try.
[847.22] Curry: Yes, I was flying in 2012 and it still sat there on my wall.
[851.22] Curry: And to be fair, it flies like a potato now.
[855.22] Curry: But back in the old days, that just felt as smooth as butter with the cake.
[860.22] Curry: So that's the David Quad with the KK2.
[863.22] Curry: Yes, it started off with a KK.
[866.22] Curry: No, try.
[867.22] Curry: Try. Yeah.
[868.22] Curry: See, I didn't even include your your triflying because there was a great picture from Badlands where it just falls out of the sky and breaks.
[875.22] Richard Robinson: I tried.
[878.22] Richard Robinson: But seriously, I mean, David Wintersdale actually, again, was one of the very early people responsible for getting stability, at least in those tries.
[886.22] Richard Robinson: And his footage is buttery smooth.
[890.22] Richard Robinson: What he gave to this hobby in terms of, you know, the try and all the little things that he had engineered.
[899.22] Richard Robinson: I mean, he's absolute legend.
[901.22] Richard Robinson: So. Yeah, good to see his name again.
[905.22] Curry: We like him. I love you, David.
[907.22] Curry: So we used to do cool things at Mad Dogs.
[910.22] Curry: I think we actually had a board, at least on one of them, to say who could fly the furthest,
[916.22] Curry: which possibly might be regarded.
[920.22] Curry: It's like, who can go the furthest away and come back?
[923.22] Curry: Because there were plenty of instances of people not coming back as well.
[927.22] Curry: Although members of the public always eventually found the planes and would return them.
[932.22] Curry: They somehow knew even ones that ended up miles away.
[935.22] Curry: There are there's some cricket ground that people fly from.
[938.22] Richard Robinson: Or the crop was harvested.
[942.22] Curry: Yes, some of them had been through a combine harvester, to be fair.
[946.22] Curry: But you wouldn't believe that we saw literally a wing go down.
[952.22] Curry: And it was only 50 meters in front of us.
[954.22] Curry: We're like, it's over there.
[955.22] Curry: And then everybody was had quads up in the air trying to get like aerial footage.
[960.22] Curry: There's 20 people in the field walking back and forth.
[963.22] Curry: Nobody could find it.
[965.22] Curry: It was just lost.
[966.22] Curry: And then next year, the farmer plows.
[967.22] Curry: It is like, I found this plane.
[968.22] Curry: Is it yours?
[970.22] Richard Robinson: Crazy.
[971.22] Richard Robinson: The whole search and rescue thing.
[973.22] Richard Robinson: Do you remember in the early days when a lot of people got licenses like Jim?
[979.22] Richard Robinson: Who was that crazy Polish guy from the hub?
[982.22] Richard Robinson: Ian's going to tell us in the comments.
[984.22] Richard Robinson: Mars and a whole lot of those sort of characters who went for this licensing.
[989.22] Richard Robinson: And they had foreseen these amazing commercial opportunities.
[993.22] Richard Robinson: So whenever a plane went down at Mad Dogs,
[995.22] Richard Robinson: and it could be anywhere between Greater Hazily, which is South Oxfordshire,
[999.22] Richard Robinson: all the way up to, what was that mountain range?
[1002.22] Richard Robinson: It sort of separated Buckinghamshire 10 miles away.
[1009.22] Richard Robinson: And almost all of them were found, to be honest.
[1012.22] Richard Robinson: But well, not in very good shape.
[1014.22] Richard Robinson: Do you remember the one where I lost in the adjacent farm?
[1018.22] Richard Robinson: And then we pulled off the footage.
[1020.22] Richard Robinson: And this farmer says, well, I'm going to keep it.
[1023.22] Richard Robinson: Look at this cat who lands in my field.
[1025.22] Curry: He decided he was going to keep your plane.
[1028.22] Richard Robinson: And that's when the media was all talking about that these drones are flying around.
[1033.22] Richard Robinson: And they're looking at your ladies who are like, you know, sun tanning naked in England.
[1037.22] Richard Robinson: Come on. No one sun tans naked.
[1040.22] Richard Robinson: And with something like 7 million CCTV cameras, we can't exactly complain about privacy.
[1046.22] Richard Robinson: I don't think.
[1047.22] Richard Robinson: I think there was a very disingenuous argument against FPV drones.
[1053.22] Curry: I do remember the one, what happened.
[1055.22] Curry: Again, this is slightly shady to talk about.
[1057.22] Curry: But I think we can now, because it was many years ago, is you had the penguin, which was a nice plane.
[1063.22] Curry: But you'd come in and you hit a seat, I think, and broke it.
[1067.22] Curry: And the towel had come off.
[1068.22] Curry: But then you saw some paragliders going over.
[1071.22] Curry: So you quickly gaffer taped the tail back on and said, I'm going to chase these paragliders and get some footage.
[1077.22] Curry: And then that went down about one and a half kilometers away by the fishing lakes.
[1082.22] Curry: So we had to go and recover that.
[1084.22] Curry: But when we did, again, we found more friends because we didn't know there was technology in fishing.
[1091.22] Curry: These guys had these bait boats and they would like text them if they got a bite and stuff.
[1096.22] Curry: They had like fully remote control, bait dropping things.
[1099.22] Curry: It was we had sort of kindred spirits there.
[1101.22] Curry: So they were quite excited to tell us that, yeah, we saw a plane go down over there and we could recover it quite nicely.
[1108.22] Curry: But what I was just going to say as well is that there were many, like, pretty amazing things on there.
[1114.22] Curry: A lot of one offs when flying wings dots.
[1118.22] Curry: Code at UK was still running.
[1120.22] Curry: Rob would bring his prototype wings and let us fly them.
[1124.22] Curry: There were multiple 10K plus runs done.
[1129.22] Curry: I flew the first of my cardboard planes there.
[1132.22] Curry: Attitude records.
[1134.22] Curry: Yeah.
[1135.22] Curry: Cloud busting.
[1136.22] Curry: Oh, yeah.
[1137.22] Curry: The cloud busting.
[1138.22] Curry: The let's get to a thousand meters within one minute with a, you know, some some, as I said, slightly dodgy thing.
[1144.22] Curry: One of the ones I remember best is a 10K night flight in which what was his name?
[1152.22] Curry: I remember now he turned his lights on and on his wing and we could see it from over 10K away.
[1157.22] Curry: This this plane just lit up.
[1159.22] Frank: So it's still within line of sight, then, if you can see it.
[1162.22] Frank: That's what that was our argument.
[1163.22] Frank: If we can see it, it's line of sight.
[1169.54] Richard Robinson: I see from from that sort of crowd, there are still quite a few of those guys are still putting up videos and they're still going pretty far, which is which is cool.
[1177.54] Richard Robinson: I don't think the the line of sight police are terribly active or maybe they just distracted looking for cords.
[1187.54] Curry: In terms of like, can this sort of stuff still be done today?
[1190.54] Curry: And of course, we have to say, because of legal reasons, not legally, technically, maybe breaking some laws, depending where you are.
[1198.54] Curry: But in my sort of experience, Ian saying Adam G, Adam G does FPV.
[1205.54] Curry: In my experience, the the powers that be are much more likely to come after you for what is obviously dangerous flying.
[1213.54] Curry: And that is don't fly over people, don't fly over property, don't fly over vehicles and stuff.
[1218.54] Curry: If you're in the middle of a field and you fly 10K away, but you remain in the middle of the field, there is little very little perceived danger.
[1228.54] Curry: Then if you were flying 10K and you crossed motorways and cities and and things like that, I think that's the case.
[1236.54] Richard Robinson: Exactly. I mean, in those days, all we had said to anyone.
[1239.54] Richard Robinson: And I remember a flight that I did of a Hansberry head and endorsed it.
[1244.54] Richard Robinson: There was a bit of backlash on the channel from the Nature Conservancy who were talking about birds that were nesting.
[1254.54] Richard Robinson: So I love both those things and I wouldn't want to offend.

[1281.54] Richard Robinson: You know, I think it's it's not the same today, but I'm definitely getting back into long range now.
[1288.54] Richard Robinson: I'm planning a new set up.
[1290.54] Richard Robinson: I don't know how the hell I'm going to import anything into the UK now after Brexit.
[1294.54] Richard Robinson: But my strategy is just going to be to get to see land, see if I can get to France.
[1300.54] Richard Robinson: And again, just it's all about and I think Ian will appreciate this.
[1306.54] Richard Robinson: David will appreciate this and you, Wayne.
[1309.54] Richard Robinson: It's about the set up of electronics and separation of the antennas, how you tweak your system,
[1316.54] Richard Robinson: whether you open the API for Google on your flight controller and do something interesting.
[1323.54] Richard Robinson: But those are the I think to me those those are the real sort of joys and challenges of what you know what I sort of call FPV.
[1331.54] Richard Robinson: And yeah, I think I'd be totally happy to explain to anybody on a UK beach facing out to see what I'm doing.
[1343.54] Richard Robinson: Flying inland, I think I'm going to give that a miss until I can get back to Africa one day or, you know, to the Caribbean or something.
[1350.54] Curry: Yeah, this this came out on a I did a livestream for my 20K subscriber sort of celebration and people were talking about long range.
[1359.54] Curry: And my answer was because you know, this is very exciting to fly quads, especially blue owl who flies them looking at the sky all the time at 55 degrees.
[1370.54] Curry: You fly a sort of relatively short range around trees and obstacles and that.
[1376.54] Curry: And from the sound of it, long range sounds boring because essentially you're going out in a straight line and you're coming back again.
[1382.54] Curry: But it's all about setting up and being able to basically overcome all the issues you're going to have, especially back in the day, because back then long range meant you were using four, three, three megahertz.
[1395.54] Curry: And that did not like to play well with other electronics.
[1399.54] Curry: You sort of the bigger the wing, the better because you could put one antenna over there and your VTX over there.
[1405.54] Curry: And it wasn't so bad nowadays with all the other long range systems like Crossfire and Ghost and Tracer.
[1412.54] Curry: It gets a lot easier to do longer range for free, if you like.
[1418.54] Frank: We do need to get Don Robinson on the show at some point because he's been in the LDO discord, link in the description below, talking about his latest projects with Express LRS and kind of some boards specifically made to work with that.
[1436.54] Frank: So I think there's definitely a lot of interest again in the kind of that side of things.
[1444.54] Frank: It'd be interesting to see because Express LRS have been working both with the 2.4 and the 8900 megahertz to kind of have a low latency, high speeds, you know, like the Tracer and Crossfire and everything else like that.
[1463.54] Frank: But it's open or at least more open source.
[1467.54] Frank: And they're getting some boards that should be able to work as receivers with that work with across multiple transmitters in terms of, you know, you don't have to buy an Express LRS radio, you can buy whatever radio want and then make it work with some receivers that he's working on.
[1488.54] Frank: So it'd be interesting to see kind of how that works into everything.
[1492.54] Curry: Yeah, it's cool. I keep hearing about that. And back last year, it seemed to be, oh, get rid of R9 and replace with Express LRS because the latency is better.
[1500.54] Curry: But now it seems to have been developed enough where it's also a really interesting long range system as well.
[1508.54] Richard Robinson: I wonder, did that come off the open LRS open source platform to begin with? Probably.

[1549.54] Jack: What other old school stories have you guys got? How did it all properly start? Who would you class as your right hand man, Rich?
[1562.54] Richard Robinson: So I sort of identified the field where I lived in Greater Hazley, which is sort of in South Oxfordshire, very rural, very, very much sort of gentrified area, lots of farmers and little quaint villages and stuff, but also lots of open land and miles and miles of distance.
[1583.54] Richard Robinson: So I was relatively new in the game, obviously linked up with FVVorg, which is now FVV Hub. And the whole thing was just in the ascendancy, but no one was doing anything. And I'm a very sociable guy.
[1594.54] Richard Robinson: So I thought I should I'll just put up an event and see who comes. We did all get together in the new forest, which is which is awesome. But that was just so sort of random. And I thought, okay, great. We get a place where we can camp and we can cook.
[1608.54] Richard Robinson: And, you know, thank God the South African shops in London make, you know, they sell the reverse, which is a very special South African sausage. I hope they know vegans offended by this.
[1621.54] Richard Robinson: But that and cold South African beer, I guess, also just took me home a little bit, you know, the couple of hot days that we get to have an event on. And I think everyone's girlfriends and wives are glad to see the back of us for a day or two.
[1637.54] Richard Robinson: And so we put that together and I made sure that there was good buy in from the village. I got to know what was his name, Dave, gentlemen, he passed away eventually. Dave was like the local village guy, you know, he,
[1653.54] Richard Robinson: he was he's actually a honorary character in the vicar of Dibley, because my next the neighbor was Richard Curtis. And he wrote the vicar of Dibley in that little village. And you got all the ideas from sitting in the pub every afternoon. So that's the sort of place it was.
[1672.54] Richard Robinson: So everyone was either with you or against you. And I just let them tolerate me for the first couple of months. And I was flying out at the cricket field. There wasn't much cricket going on. So the thing was a big expense to the village. And then we put on the first one, which I think it was a little late. And it was getting a little bit colder when it's getting a bit cold. And but there was a great turnout. I think we had about 15 or 20 people at the first one.
[1699.54] Curry: Yeah, I mean, it got to the point where it was too big. So no one could fly and you'd be flying and suddenly like I can just see someone's feet, which was always a pain. And that's, I think it got limited to like 15 in the end, didn't it? And so it's like you off the spaces and then they get snapped up by people and then they come along.
[1715.54] Richard Robinson: Yeah, I always felt that there weren't enough people there, you know, because look, I mean, the UK is a small place, but it's a big place too. So to get people to come up, come down from the north. And there's a lot of people we knew on the forums who, you know, that just never made it either up or down. But yeah, I mean, look, you drove pretty far to get there. So definitely had a this sort of feel that we were all doing something, you know, that was a big place.
[1745.54] Richard Robinson: Awesome. You know, something important.
[1748.54] Curry: Yeah, well, it's kind of like, I suppose that the similarity here might be something like the mini air show where you yeah, there's stuff going on. But it's also a case of you hang out with your friends, you see what they're flying, you talk to them about what they're doing, and you learn some stuff from them and stuff.
[1763.54] Curry: But we had a great relationship with the village, but some of the guys that another bunch of guys till fly now the team Woolies. So they did a bit of a road trip up one year. And I remember rich getting very worried that we were going to be banned forever because they're a roundy lot.
[1781.54] Curry: They like the odd tipple.
[1784.54] Richard Robinson: Oh, when you said Woolies, you are referring to our Welsh friends.
[1789.54] Richard Robinson: Yes. Okay. Team Woolies sheep.
[1795.54] Richard Robinson: My daughter still speaks of them fondly, you know, especially where I think it's about three times a year that I watch your night flight video. Obviously, there's a lot of there's a lot of Welsh commentary in there. And Simon, actually, Simon, do you guys still use his antennas?
[1813.54] Richard Robinson: By the way, big nose.
[1815.54] Curry: He stopped. He stopped doing antennas a while ago.
[1818.54] Richard Robinson: Oh, okay. He just made a really great version of the IB crazy five point eights and two point fours and one point twos. And I went pretty far on his on his junk, you know, but I do remember the weekend they came up. That was a problem. That was a problem for for everyone.
[1836.54] Curry: Yeah. So watch out if you're anywhere near Team Woolies sheep, people.
[1843.54] Richard Robinson: But yeah, I mean, there are a lot of a lot of fun stories, a lot of war stories from that period as well. But I think at the same time, a lot of people were trying to organize really big organized events with banners and advertising.
[1854.54] Richard Robinson: And they just a lot of them fell through back then. Whereas we sort of had quite a pull because it was just just a bunch of uncomplicated guys not trying to make any money, not trying to make a thing of it.
[1864.54] Richard Robinson: And just remembering back on that the whole lot of Wayne, I think you'll agree there's a whole lot of first time things for this industry. I mean, we had the first mini quads racing and Benny was Benny was a kid. Do you remember?
[1880.54] Curry: Yeah, I tell the story. He was 13 and his mum bought them. Yeah. And his mum because you disappeared somewhere. And so she came to some reason I was in charge.
[1891.54] Curry: And she's like, you have to look after my son. Here's my number. So I've still got Benny's mum's number somewhere in my phone. And within 10 minutes, Neil, my arch nemesis, Neil had him climbing a tree like a chimney sweep to get a plane.
[1908.54] Curry: I have to explain to his mum if he falls out a tree and dies now. Sorry, we accidentally killed your son. Yeah, but yeah, we had some the first of the mini quad races there.
[1920.54] Curry: And like Ratty used to be a big wing guy. This is Richard. I forgot his last name now. He got Yeah, Roland. He got he, you know, he did a lot of organizing of quad races and stuff, didn't he?
[1934.54] Frank: He does a lot of the IFPV into FPV. And the that is currently the BDRA kind of official race calendar. And he does a lot of the kind of points management of the leagues from that as well. I think I think he's still involved in a lot of that.
[1957.54] Richard Robinson: Yeah, he was in the first what is it called the World Cup or something in the Arab Emirates in Dubai. He was that he was there for for the UK.
[1970.54] Richard Robinson: Yeah, the German World Championship in Dubai. Yeah, yeah. I mean, the guy's a beast. You know, do you know that he wants to become a fighter pilot? And I believe he will do it.
[1980.54] Richard Robinson: Talk about Benny.
[1981.54] Richard Robinson: Benny. Yeah, Luke. Yeah, Luke. Yeah. And actually, when as I recall, his his mom was happy to leave him there because he got on so well with Holly, my daughter.
[1992.54] Richard Robinson: And I mean, actually, for my daughters, she's somebody who remembers my dog so well. The other guys all wanted to get away from the kids very often. But Wayne brought Sophie through once or twice and they got together and stuff. But but she really remembers, you know, when you're a kid, everything is so much bigger, you know, and we got footage of planes getting dangerously close to her.
[2019.54] Richard Robinson: But absolutely never lost a finger. And she's still talking about it today. And that's what 10 years later or similar footage when Sophie came up, there was this time where we had this big inflatable thing.
[2033.54] Curry: Yes, the big sausage.
[2034.54] Curry: Being stupid. And there's this voice of my wife that had to cut out saying, get away with it, you're going to get killed. I'm okay. I know what you're doing. He's the world champion at this. So we should be fine. But she wasn't having it. These are dangerous things. You're all going to die. But another another thing I remember so well, when you had Holly with you is rich, when we camped, we like had tents. And for some reason, rich bought this thing, you know,
[2062.54] Curry: you can get these tents that you just sit under at the beach to keep his shade off you. He had one of these to sleep in.
[2067.54] Richard Robinson: Such a bastard, Wayne. You know, you're gonna have to finish the story, aren't you?
[2071.54] Richard Robinson: Yes. And he told the story, I can predict exactly what he's gonna say.
[2077.54] Richard Robinson: We'll sit now.

[2102.54] Curry: And I come back out and we'll do this flight. So we're sort of waiting. Sometimes what would happen is we turn on.
[2108.54] Curry: It's like, I'll be two minutes launch. I'll be with you. And we're flying around for half an hour.
[2114.54] Curry: It's like, where's Rich? He was reading a story. And we just hear this snoring.
[2118.54] Richard Robinson: Because he's fallen asleep. Reading a story to his daughter. And we're running out of lipos up here.
[2125.54] Richard Robinson: Dr. Zeus at 8 o'clock in the evening is like heroin. Okay.

[2142.94] Curry: Ian wanted to talk about my legendary snoring, which everybody knows is legendary.
[2147.94] Curry: The NHS have told me, if you sleep next to me, you're legally entitled to wear some sort of ear protection because it's over 90 decibels.
[2155.94] Jack: And that's dangerous. Yeah, that's funny. Oh my God.
[2160.94] Jack: So if you were in the same field as me.
[2162.94] Jack: What was the other story you thought he was going to tell? I don't.
[2166.94] Jack: Rich.
[2168.94] Richard Robinson: Oh, what was the other story Wayne was going to tell? Well, he's going to tell you about my very insignificant little tent.
[2176.94] Richard Robinson: A little, you know, like a little Indian chief tent that you get when you're nine years old.
[2181.94] Richard Robinson: And Wendy House. No, smaller than that. Really ridiculous.
[2187.94] Curry: Because we could see shape against it and it had no interior lining either.
[2192.94] Curry: So during the night all the condensation just ran down onto me.
[2196.94] Richard Robinson: Sure. Sure. And then the following season I got this huge tent that we all flew through. Do you remember that?
[2205.94] Richard Robinson: And that actually reminds me of. So who's the chap again with the the tricopter? The brilliant filming.
[2211.94] Richard Robinson: I mean, what a genius. What Martin Badlands. Martin Badlands. Yeah.
[2217.94] Richard Robinson: I mean, we also did. Martin and I used to go through to bounce. Anyone here of bounce?
[2224.94] Richard Robinson: And in fact, the guy who ran bounce made a brilliant flight controller for 3D helicopters.
[2230.94] Richard Robinson: Angelos, the Greek chap, Angelos. F.B.B. Bounds. Did you ever go there, Wayne?
[2235.94] Curry: I never got an invite. It was invite only and you weren't allowed to ask. You had to be invited.
[2240.94] Richard Robinson: You never got the nod, mate. Sorry. No, it's not. It's not that at all. I just seen F.B.B. Steve is on here.
[2247.94] Richard Robinson: I mean, my God, if we talk about one character from the olden days, Steve, how are you doing, brother?
[2253.94] Richard Robinson: Now, that's one person who never came to Mad Dogs. Oh, he's saying, hey, he's talking to somebody else when I'm talking to him.
[2262.94] Richard Robinson: But Steve never made it down. But did you get it? We did. I did meet Steve at one of the meets up further north.
[2268.94] Richard Robinson: I drove a thousand miles to get to an F.B.B. meet in those days. You know, it was incredible.
[2275.94] Richard Robinson: But Ian did come down. And where was I with this? So we're talking about Bounds. Bounds was very, very much like Mad Dogs, but probably had more people, to be honest.
[2287.94] Richard Robinson: And, yeah, so Badlands, his filming of these events, if anyone wants to see what Mad Dogs really looked like and, you know, he was taking a 2012 tricopter and making it look like a DJI today.
[2301.94] Richard Robinson: I mean, really beautiful stuff.
[2303.94] Curry: So that stuff I was showing with all the planes in formation, that is Martin at the back with his tricopter bent forward this far, keeping up with all the planes absolutely beautifully.
[2314.94] Richard Robinson: He did it. He did the best stuff. Do you remember the loop filming when so we would all chase each other and then go into a loop and I've got some footage that I downloaded last week.
[2325.94] Richard Robinson: I just forgot to do anything with it. But one way. I think it was you behind me. And there's this perfect loop and the perfect chase within the loop. It was incredible.
[2335.94] Curry: It's much harder to do than you think, isn't it? Especially when you do different types of planes. Let me ask that list.
[2342.94] Curry: You've been playing your sim.
[2344.94] Curry: You what?
[2345.94] Jack: FPV. Steve's been playing your simulator.
[2349.94] Curry: Well, he's got he's got good taste.
[2351.94] Curry: I was just going to say, Jack, you'd heard of Mad Dogs.
[2354.94] Curry: Hadn't you? Had you heard of any of the other events like bounce?
[2357.94] Jack: I never heard of bounce.
[2359.94] Curry: There you go. It was all Mad Dogs.
[2361.94] Jack: And I sent an email.
[2364.94] Curry: Who'd you send an email to?
[2366.94] Jack: I don't know. But I was like, get me get me in a parlor.
[2371.94] Frank: Yeah, but that might be the intention of the email. But as Curry knows, the emails that you get from Jack don't necessarily reflect the intention.
[2379.94] Curry: Just random letters that you have to correct and send back to him.
[2385.94] Frank: Just face plant a keyboard. That's about what you get.
[2391.94] Curry: It would be it would be fantastic to do that sort of stuff again.
[2395.94] Curry: We just have to find the right location where we can run away from very quickly in case anybody comes after us.
[2400.94] Frank: Well, there's there's some there's a plan for how we might do a kind of mini air show invitational that could be quite good for doing some quite mad things.
[2416.94] Frank: Frank, tell us more.
[2420.94] Frank: I don't want to say too much on air at the moment.
[2428.94] Frank: But when I know a bit more about how we're going to do it, then I will at least put the shout out of what we're going to do.

[2440.94] Frank: But I will keep you updated. But yeah, this is definitely kind of inspiring a bit more interest in getting that happening this year.

[2473.94] Richard Robinson: You know, a lot of pilots came in because they used to be there previously used to be real pilots.
[2479.94] Richard Robinson: You know, I mean, I used to fly sister 172.
[2483.94] Richard Robinson: I then went on to microlights when I couldn't afford the GAA anymore and then FPV.
[2490.94] Richard Robinson: And then I promised Wayne that I was going to get into some other form of flying like rotorcraft.
[2497.94] Curry: But that I never do. You're going to do power power as well.
[2501.94] Richard Robinson: Any PPM? I was going to do PPG. And then I thought, you know, I kind of like my legs.
[2509.94] Richard Robinson: There's just something about it. I love the wind in my face, to be honest, but I don't think I would do PPG.
[2517.94] Richard Robinson: But I'm pretty interested in gyro planes. And I think if I ever got back into sort of general aviation again, it would be gyros.
[2527.94] Richard Robinson: Because when all the Cessna's and everyone else lands, that's when the gyros go up and have fun.
[2532.94] Richard Robinson: They're very unaffected by turbulence and wind effects.
[2536.94] Richard Robinson: And they can go in the meanest weather, which is cool.

[2603.32] Richard Robinson: And then I ordered another one immediately, having learned from whatever mistake it was that I'd made.
[2610.32] Frank: That's the only way that I've seen or heard of the My Twin Dreams being flown is once.

[2622.32] Richard Robinson: The second one I did, I flew Beachyhead.
[2625.32] Richard Robinson: I had that sunset flight in Oxford, which was...
[2629.32] Richard Robinson: Everyone loved it. It was a very, very good flight.
[2632.32] Richard Robinson: Very buttery smooth and everything.
[2635.32] Richard Robinson: It's only ever topped by Ian Coyote because he went and put a gimbal on.
[2642.32] Richard Robinson: And I said to him, look, that's like Botox.
[2645.32] Richard Robinson: That's like Botox for GoPros.
[2649.32] Richard Robinson: But I had also discovered something that nobody really knew,
[2653.32] Richard Robinson: was that if you put on an ND filter, you wouldn't get the horrible...
[2658.32] Richard Robinson: Jello.
[2659.32] Richard Robinson: Well, the prop effect.
[2661.32] Richard Robinson: So you put an ND filter on it just because it just looks like a little animation.
[2665.32] Richard Robinson: So when you panning across your props, especially on the twins, it just looks beautiful.
[2672.32] Richard Robinson: So I used to fly FPV like I flew regular planes.
[2675.32] Richard Robinson: So if you're in the circuit and you're going to do a right hand or a left hand,
[2678.32] Richard Robinson: you're coming into base, I would turn my camera and do exactly what I do in a regular plane.
[2683.32] Richard Robinson: It turns out that I actually made some really great footage.
[2687.32] Richard Robinson: But on the twin, the second twin that I built, the one that had the black and yellow tape,
[2693.32] Richard Robinson: it probably cost me £500, £600 to put it together.
[2696.32] Richard Robinson: And I sold it for a grand about a year afterwards because this thing,
[2700.32] Richard Robinson: now I had some pedigree, it flew there.
[2702.32] Richard Robinson: That early morning Oxford flight, which I put up,
[2706.32] Richard Robinson: then I put another flight up where the intro to the video was a link to the Samaritans,
[2712.32] Richard Robinson: because it was shot at beachy head.
[2715.32] Richard Robinson: I mean, I don't want to put beachy head on my video,
[2718.32] Richard Robinson: and then I got a whole lot of morbidly depressed people thinking,
[2722.32] Richard Robinson: shit, that's a good idea.
[2725.32] Richard Robinson: But an amazing flight over the head and over the line charts and everything.
[2735.32] Richard Robinson: So I was answering, no, I wasn't answering your question.
[2739.32] Richard Robinson: I was just replying to you, saying that, no, that those,
[2742.32] Richard Robinson: okay, you're right, everyone does crash their twins almost immediately.
[2746.32] Richard Robinson: But I held onto mine for about a year.
[2748.32] Richard Robinson: I'm playing the flight control.
[2750.32] Curry: There's two things I should mention.
[2753.32] Curry: If you ever get a chance to fly with Rich, you must do so,
[2758.32] Curry: because it's the most engaging, hilarious thing in the world.
[2763.32] Curry: Rich would maybe deny this, but there's a lot of talk coming from him
[2768.32] Curry: if there's a slight flicker, just a flicker of static.
[2772.32] Curry: And there's a lot of shouting from you about who just turned on 5.8.

[2777.32] Richard Robinson: If your planes turn miles away and you see someone's crotch
[2781.32] Richard Robinson: because they're trying to fix something on the tail, it's like, okay.
[2785.32] Curry: There's a flicker, just a flicker.
[2790.32] Curry: I've got a lot of audio about you telling me the right way to fly a plane.
[2796.32] Curry: It's like, not like that, not like that, not like that.
[2799.32] Curry: Wayne, what are you doing?

[2805.32] Curry: I think maybe the tracker thing was in the early days of tracker,
[2810.32] Curry: but it didn't seem to always work.
[2812.32] Curry: I think I've seen them act as like an anti-tracker.

[3411.6] Curry: And I've got no footage, no flying and a hearty knee.
