[339.51] Jack: My plane batteries didn't go so well,
[341.51] Jack: because it was incredibly windy.
[344.51] Jack: But I flew line of sight the tiny trainer a bit,
[350.51] Jack: but also crashed because it was just too light in the wind.
[355.51] Jack: I landed a couple of times, but not really that amazingly.
[360.51] Jack: I flew about four packs on my mini-quads.
[366.51] Jack: I used one of them to do a bit of search and rescue.
[373.51] Jack: What were you having to search for in rescue?
[376.51] Jack: There was a young girl who was missing.
[380.51] Jack: Genuine actual search and rescue.
[383.51] Jack: It seemed like a downed quad,
[385.51] Jack: not an actual human being.
[387.51] Jack: Two police officers in plain clothes showed up,
[392.51] Jack: and they were like,
[393.51] Jack: Hi, we're police officers.
[394.51] Jack: And I was like, me, Gavin.
[397.51] Jack: It felt weird because you always see it in the movies,
[404.51] Jack: but you always like,
[405.51] Jack: if you've got ID,
[406.51] Jack: because A, you don't look like police officers.
[409.51] Jack: They're driving an electric BMW.
[412.51] Jack: And they were like,
[413.51] Jack: do you mind just doing the corners of the hill
[417.51] Jack: and the walkway and everything?
[419.51] Jack: So they kind of worked out that she probably got into the woods.
[422.51] Jack: So that was kind of cool.
[425.51] Jack: And I saved my last battery for,
[429.51] Jack: I had a fifth battery with me,
[431.51] Jack: and I let Dan Upton fly that.
[434.51] Jack: I've only got sunburn on my hands,
[436.51] Jack: which is great,
[438.51] Jack: because I had my hoodie up and everything.
[442.51] Jack: I watched a Roto-Rite episode of Blue Hours mentioned on it.

[545.05] Jack: some guys doing the old petrol RC cars.

[554.05] Jack: hey, what about your fail safe?
[557.05] Jack: None of them have fail safes.
[559.05] Jack: One of them rampaged to the rugby field,
[565.05] Jack: went through the gate and hit a post.
[568.05] Tony: They're like ankle bankers and things.
[571.05] Jack: I know, just absolutely.
[574.05] Jack: One of them went off to have a look at it,
[577.05] Jack: and he brought back solid,
[579.05] Jack: I don't know about two centimeter thick rods
[584.05] Jack: that have been bent and snapped with eye holes.
[588.05] Jack: I don't know what parts they are on a car,
[590.05] Jack: but they just don't set a fail safe.
[592.05] Jack: I guess because they don't fall on people
[594.05] Jack: or kill people like drones do, apparently.
[597.05] Frank: Generally, you're not going far enough out of range.
[603.05] Frank: Yeah.
[604.05] Frank: That's quite a challenge to get out of range.
[608.05] Curry: Yeah, but these car transmitters aren't exactly like,
[612.05] Curry: oh, we must put a crossfire on it
[614.05] Curry: because we're doing six kilometers away, is it?
[616.05] Curry: It's just like some mouse thing.
[618.05] Tony: I mean, people drive around estates with their cars.
[623.05] Curry: Oh, yeah.
[624.05] Curry: These are FPV cars.
[625.05] Curry: That's a different thing.
[626.05] Curry: If you're just talking about people driving
[627.05] Curry: on a side with their little, I'm doing this
[629.05] Curry: and this is me driving on the steering wheel,
[632.05] Curry: then that's not very far.
[635.05] Curry: But I suppose it's quite hard to take people out
[638.05] Curry: because if you have like, oh, there was a step
[641.05] Curry: and then that destroyed the car
[644.05] Curry: because the person was above the step.
[647.05] Curry: It seems less likely to kill people,
[649.05] Curry: maybe do damage to their feet.
[652.05] Jack: Yeah.
[653.05] Jack: I mean, if it runs over your toes,
[654.05] Jack: you're not even going to notice it.
[655.05] Jack: Or if you're doing headstand at this time,
[657.05] Curry: that could be dangerous.
[658.05] Curry: But these are corner cases, I feel.
[661.05] Frank: You had to fail safe tests on the trucks,
[664.05] Frank: like you mean the little scale ones that
[668.05] Curry: drive around the scale.
[671.05] Curry: Yeah, they don't even go that fast
[673.05] Jack: and they're within the fenced off area.
[677.05] Frank: And they surely don't weigh that much.
[681.05] Frank: But even if they were going like four miles an hour,

[696.05] Jack: that baits the police and he gets into a high speed chase?

[702.05] Curry: There's one of the reasons I'd like to make that

[794.18] Frank: that I'm doing some work for occasionally.

[947.18] Frank: It's just kind of meadow
[949.18] Frank: with some little saplings growing in it.
[952.18] Frank: If you were there, you'd understand why.

[957.18] Curry: I'm going to pick you up on this.
[959.18] Curry: It can't have been abandoned that long

[962.18] Curry: because the whole thing would have
[964.18] Curry: erupted into quite big brush.

[1010.18] Curry: without any human intervention.
[1013.18] Frank: It's not that I'm withholding information.
[1016.18] Frank: It's that I don't know how to communicate
[1018.18] Frank: the information accurately.
[1020.18] Curry: It really doesn't sound that hard, does it?
[1023.18] Frank: Well, it shouldn't be, but it is.
[1027.18] Frank: So, I was flying around
[1029.18] Frank: just kind of fairly low tilt to begin with
[1032.18] Frank: and then tried to fly a line of sight
[1034.18] Frank: passing the goggles around
[1035.18] Frank: and that didn't go well at all.
[1036.18] Frank: I was flying my Tyro 79
[1038.18] Frank: and I'd forgotten my glasses
[1040.18] Frank: and it didn't go very well.
[1043.18] Frank: I completely lost orientation about 30 metres out.
[1047.18] Frank: I was like, oh yeah, this has not gone well.
[1050.18] Frank: But, hey, they got to enjoy a crash.
[1053.18] Frank: FPV, it's fine.
[1056.18] Frank: And then I gave up on that
[1058.18] Frank: and while I was there,
[1061.18] Frank: I stuck it high tilt
[1063.18] Frank: and then was flying around
[1065.18] Frank: one of the saplings
[1066.18] Frank: trying to learn where exactly...
[1069.18] Frank: Well, first of all,
[1070.18] Frank: where like hover is.
[1073.18] Frank: Like how high the top was.
[1076.18] Frank: No, I learned that.
[1077.18] Curry: Just looking at the sky at all times, surely.
[1079.18] Curry: Pretty much.
[1080.18] Frank: Well, that's why I was flying
[1081.18] Frank: around the sapling was like,
[1082.18] Frank: you know, even if you're kind of...
[1084.18] Frank: I had a reference of like how high I was
[1086.18] Frank: and whether I was moving forwards
[1087.18] Frank: or backwards or whatever.
[1088.18] Frank: But yeah, it's very much a case of like,
[1090.18] Frank: yeah, there's none of that.
[1092.18] Frank: That's not happening.
[1093.18] Frank: So I just, yeah.
[1095.18] Frank: I definitely didn't try landing
[1097.18] Frank: anywhere nearby.
[1099.18] Frank: That was bad or would have been bad
[1102.18] Frank: if I'd tried that.
[1103.18] Frank: But yeah, I was just orbiting
[1106.18] Frank: the saplings and...
[1108.18] Frank: Was this a dream?
[1111.18] Frank: No, there was no one.
[1112.18] Frank: It would explain a lot.
[1113.18] Jack: Stuff on his Instagram.
[1116.18] Jack: How was the landing?
[1119.18] Frank: I just was somewhere that I knew
[1123.18] Frank: where it was and just cut, just disarmed.
[1126.18] Frank: Oh, that's how it works every time.
[1129.18] BlueOwl: Yeah.
[1130.18] BlueOwl: Either crash or you just get where you are.
[1133.18] Frank: I just wanted to know where it was
[1137.18] Frank: to go pick it up.
[1138.18] Frank: I'm not flying it back to us
[1139.18] Frank: because I have a small child standing next to me.
[1141.18] Frank: I don't really want to risk taking them out.
[1145.18] Frank: So I can see that bit of path.
[1148.18] Frank: I know where that bit of path is.
[1149.18] Frank: I'll just kind of fly as slowly as I dare along there
[1153.18] Frank: so that I still know where I am
[1155.18] Frank: and just disarm and just plonk onto the ground
[1159.18] Frank: with a nice thump.
[1161.18] BlueOwl: I actually remember my very first flight
[1165.18] BlueOwl: in real life with high-tilt.
[1167.18] BlueOwl: And we had somebody who was very interested.
[1170.18] BlueOwl: There was one more person.
[1172.18] BlueOwl: I was trying to trip his pins.
[1176.18] BlueOwl: I don't know what it was.
[1178.18] BlueOwl: Some really high poles.
[1180.18] BlueOwl: And this guy was just so interested.
[1183.18] BlueOwl: He wanted to know everything, how fast they fly.
[1185.18] BlueOwl: That's the first question I always get.
[1188.18] BlueOwl: He had no idea about drones.
[1189.18] BlueOwl: So he just kept talking and talking.
[1191.18] BlueOwl: And I remember my friend saying at some point now,
[1194.18] BlueOwl: she's trying to fly something that's very, very difficult.
[1199.18] BlueOwl: So you just need to stop talking and let her focus.
[1203.18] BlueOwl: And it was.
[1204.18] BlueOwl: It was so intense.
[1205.18] BlueOwl: And I was just shaking.
[1207.18] BlueOwl: I was all over the place with the quad.
[1210.18] BlueOwl: And it wasn't very pretty.
[1212.18] BlueOwl: It's not something I would post.
[1213.18] BlueOwl: But I just remember that comment.
[1215.18] BlueOwl: You just need to shut up and let's just fly.
[1218.18] Frank: Yeah, I see.
[1223.18] Frank: But yeah, I haven't flown the forest yet.
[1226.18] Frank: That's on my to-do list is fly a little forest next to it.
[1230.18] Curry: So when you say it's a forest,
[1232.18] Curry: does this mean you're just going through a forest trail through trees
[1235.18] Curry: and it's going to be very tree exciting?

[1239.18] Frank: Lots of trees.
[1241.18] Frank: It's a whatever the proper word is
[1246.18] Frank: for a place where they grow trees as a farm.
[1250.18] Frank: They farm trees.

[1257.18] Frank: I feel like there's probably a word for that, isn't there?

[2180.02] Curry: I think the shout about checking all the bolts to see if there's any wobble in it is quite a good one.

[2275.02] Curry: So you could be flying like 100 meters and then you're like, oh, I'll come back and test this.
[2279.02] Curry: So you fly at 10 meters out into a field and then you flick the switch
[2283.02] Curry: and it immediately goes up to 120 meters before it starts coming back to you,
[2287.02] Curry: which is really, really weird.
[2290.02] Curry: So it's like the highest point you're at during that flight, not just at a certain height.
[2295.02] Tony: That's the weird thing about it.
[2299.02] Tony: Well, it's there anyway.
[2301.02] Tony: And if I lose my sight and my goggles or whatever, I can just flick a switch now.
[2306.02] Tony: I will turn the radio off.
[2308.02] Tony: Has anyone tried that?

[2311.02] Curry: I'm scared about being far enough away to get the radio back on, reconnect and saying it's going to be okay.

[2354.02] Tony: I don't know if it's going to land, if it's going to crash.

[2361.02] Curry: I think the funniest thing about that is you're flying away there.

[2367.02] Curry: It smashes up and the battery comes out.
[2369.02] Curry: And then it's like, oh, no.
[2370.02] Curry: And then you realize there's a missile heading towards you.
[2372.02] Curry: You've got to start legging it before it hits.
[2378.02] Frank: I do know someone who had a rather poor connection with a crossfire module on the back of their radio.
[2390.02] Frank: And so the power came out or something.
[2394.02] Frank: And so the module died.
[2396.02] Frank: They were busy trying to fit it all back in because it was not a sensible connection.
[2401.02] Frank: It was like loads of little jumper leads just plugged in or something.
[2407.02] Frank: And so they had a little wing of some kind that just came back and was just circling around because it was online now.
[2416.02] Frank: So it wasn't quite rescue mode, scary, but it was just going in circles.
[2421.02] Frank: And it had a lithium ion in it.
[2424.02] Frank: It had a stupid amount of time left to fly because basically you just launched it.
[2430.02] Frank: And then the connection went off of his radio and like, oh, he's trying to see what's going to happen first.
[2437.02] Frank: Is he going to be able to plug back in his module and turn it all back on and reconnect and then actually get it to land?
[2442.02] Frank: Or is it just going to run out of battery and just collapse onto the ground somewhere?
[2448.02] Curry: Well, I think it'd be an interesting experiment to do because in some ways, in the ideal circumstances,
[2457.02] Curry: what will happen is it will run out of battery to run the motor, but it'd still be able to move the surfaces.
[2462.02] Curry: And if you've got the right wind conditions, it will just gently spiral down and land perfectly.
[2469.02] Curry: It will probably just stall and do the normal wing thing about going to splat on the ground.
[2473.02] Curry: But it would be nice to think it would do that, wouldn't it?
[2477.02] Frank: It would be nice to think so.

[2522.43] Curry: Does INAF actually have an auto-land?
[2525.43] Jack: Yeah, it has now, but it usually just circles and gets lower and lower,
[2532.43] Jack: and then either crash it into the trees around you or land.
[2540.43] Jack: You have to follow it around and then grab it as it goes down.
[2546.43] Jack: It can circle you, but you've got to select it to land, auto-land.
[2553.43] Jack: They've done the whole safe zones now as well.
[2556.43] Jack: If you're within distance of a safe home, it will fly there and then land.
[2564.43] Frank: Is the safe zone something you set in the mission planner,
[2567.43] Frank: or is that something you'd have to wander out somewhere and say, here's safe?

[2574.43] Jack: I think you just set safe points, but if you're too far away, then it just ignores them,
