[13.0] Curry: Wacky Wes
[14.0] (Patrons): Mikey Dred
[16.0] (Patrons): Art Faulkner
[17.0] (Patrons): Carlos Campos
[19.0] (Patrons): Thank you
[20.0] (Patrons): Hello, I'm a TV cover
[21.0] (Patrons): Let's Drone Out now
[51.16] Jack: Hello and welcome back to Learn the Artist Cast
[53.16] Jack: No, that's the other podcast
[56.16] Jack: And you're listening to Let's Drone Out
[59.16] Jack: Tonight you're joined by Andrew slash Frank
[61.16] Jack: Good evening
[63.16] Jack: Everyone's favourite curry kitten
[65.16] Jack: Hello
[66.16] Jack: And we have famous 260
[68.16] Jack: Hello, good evening
[70.16] Jack: I'm Brighton, so I fly, hello, let's start the show
[73.16] Jack: Jack, have you been able to get out and fly it at all this week?
[77.16] Jack: Yes, I flew Tuesday
[79.16] Jack: I had a very good time
[81.16] Jack: Good
[82.16] Jack: Well, I've got some footage
[86.16] Jack: And yes, I went to Stammah Park
[90.16] Jack: They're now charging for parking, which sucks
[93.16] Jack: But I actually got to fly around some trees
[96.16] Jack: I clipped a few trees, clipped a few bushes
[99.16] Jack: And had a good old time
[101.16] Frank: Did you clip the hill again?
[104.16] Jack: No
[106.16] Jack: The moss, I must say
[109.16] Jack: Excellent, excellent
[112.16] Jack: Is it mini camera?
[114.16] Jack: Like mini micro, no no
[117.16] Jack: Micro camera
[119.16] Jack: I must say, thank you Venus
[121.16] Jack: It is incredible, but unfortunately
[124.16] Jack: The case has cracked on it
[126.16] Jack: So it didn't hold up too well to a tree
[131.16] Lee: Destructive testing, I don't tend to do that
[134.16] Lee: So thank you for that
[135.16] Jack: Yeah
[136.16] Jack: I found out that the toothless is a micro camera
[139.16] Jack: So it's actually
[142.16] Jack: Hang on, 19, 20, 21, 22
[145.16] Jack: 3 millimeters wider and doesn't fit
[148.16] Jack: So, good to know
[150.16] Jack: 19 mil for the win
[152.16] Jack: So, yeah, we're trying to fix that
[156.16] Jack: Yeah, so I went to Floozy Be Dan
[159.16] Jack: And Tom came with us
[163.16] Jack: Who I met through Funny Enough eBay
[166.16] Jack: And I bought some receivers from him
[169.16] Jack: And I broke the Ottoman lid
[173.16] Jack: And I was like, man, can you do something about that?
[176.16] Jack: And he was like, yep
[177.16] Jack: So, once again, it's the people you know
[181.16] Jack: And their wonderful skills
[183.16] Jack: And his whole woodwork shop
[187.16] Jack: I'm glad you explained that
[188.16] Curry: Because I thought breaking the Ottoman lid
[190.16] Curry: Was some sort of weird euphemism
[191.16] Curry: For something else I don't know about
[194.16] Jack: Yeah, so I had a good time
[197.16] Jack: Nothing too eventful happened with flying
[201.16] Jack: But managed to do about four packs
[207.16] Jack: We got out a little late
[210.16] Jack: And it was the Torvall bags first day out as well
[217.16] Jack: So I'm one of these guys who've got an FPV bag
[222.16] Jack: It is nice having everything with you
[225.16] Jack: But geez, it's so heavy
[227.16] Jack: It hurts my insides a bit
[229.16] Jack: It is so heavy
[231.16] Curry: And then it wouldn't be as heavy
[235.16] Jack: It's heavy with stuff not really in it
[238.16] Jack: I mean, I could lose
[240.16] Jack: Funny enough, I brought the tablet along with me
[244.16] Jack: And, you know
[246.16] Frank: The tablet or your tablets
[247.16] Frank: I mean, there's quite a big weight difference there
[250.16] Frank: Oh, no, not really
[252.16] Jack: Not saying how many tablets I have to think
[255.16] Frank: That's what I meant
[256.16] Jack: The single tablet is the lighter one
[258.16] Jack: Yeah, I suppose, yeah
[260.16] Jack: Yeah, took that
[262.16] Jack: Funny enough, Tom used that
[263.16] Jack: So that was pretty good
[264.16] Jack: And yeah, didn't really use any of my light sort of tools or anything
[268.16] Jack: Just grabbed a few props
[270.16] Jack: But the main compartment of it is pretty empty
[273.16] Jack: You know, it's only got really got a few tools in it
[278.16] Jack: My transmitter
[280.16] Jack: It's nice not to break every single switch off my transmitter
[284.16] Jack: For a change
[285.16] Jack: Because, you know, with my Jippo bags
[288.16] Jack: Of, like, you know
[290.16] Jack: Carrier bags, not the ones
[291.16] Jack: Yeah, like
[293.16] Jack: If you're unfamiliar with this story, painless
[295.16] Jack: I've broken all my long lever switches off my Taranis
[300.16] Jack: By putting it in a carrier bag
[302.16] Jack: Ah, okay
[303.16] Lee: I've got a couple of bags and cases in here, mate
[306.16] Lee: If you need something, just hit me up
[308.16] Lee: Because I've got things hanging about
[310.16] Lee: If you generally need a bag to keep it safe
[313.16] Jack: I've sorted it now
[315.16] Jack: But the bag weighs a ton
[319.16] Jack: It's like it's
[321.16] Jack: Yeah, I think it's literally all padding
[323.16] Jack: And the front repair flap bit
[326.16] Jack: Where it's got, like, a little magnetic pot on it
[329.16] Jack: Which is completely useless for me
[331.16] Jack: Because all my hardware is aluminium
[333.16] (Patrons): Mm-hmm
[335.16] Jack: But, uh, yeah
[336.16] Jack: That's what happens
[337.16] Jack: That's completely
[338.16] Jack: I'm thinking about cutting that bit out
[340.16] Jack: But I don't know whether that's a good idea or not
[342.16] Jack: To start hacking bits off a bag
[345.16] Frank: Tailspin says you don't need a car battery
[348.16] Frank: There is no car battery in there
[350.16] Frank: Rumpy says you don't need a petrol generator
[353.16] Frank: Caroline says you need to pack some helium balloons in
[357.16] Frank: Oh, my God
[358.16] Jack: It weighs a ton, this bag
[361.16] Jack: It's just all padding and bag
[364.16] Jack: It's like
[365.16] Curry: I think you need to get it on some scales to see what it does weigh
[370.16] Curry: That'd be interesting
[371.16] Curry: Perhaps you're not just distributing the weight properly on yourself
[375.16] Jack: I managed to break my momentary switch in the Torville transmitter case
[379.16] Jack: Aha, I didn't buy one of those
[382.16] Jack: I see a dolphin behind Lee
[384.16] Jack: Have you got a dolphin, Lee?
[386.16] Lee: Uh, yes, no, I see, I've got to do the right hand
[390.16] Lee: That's it, yeah, that's the
[392.16] Lee: Atom RC Dolphin
[394.16] Lee: So we have the killer whale
[396.16] Lee: The bloody stupid names
[399.16] Lee: Not the killer whales and dolphins
[401.16] Lee: That's fine, yeah
[403.16] Lee: But it's like calling them fluffy teddy bear
[406.16] Lee: And things like that
[407.16] Lee: So that's the dolphin
[409.16] Lee: So after I did the killer whale
[411.16] Lee: Which was a twin-engined, kind of lovely, floaty thing
[414.16] Lee: Loads of room inside
[416.16] Lee: Quite a few people got in touch
[418.16] Lee: And said, oh, right, try the dolphin
[420.16] Lee: So I'm thinking, okay, right, fine
[422.16] Lee: So I looked it up
[424.16] Lee: And it looks like that
[426.16] Lee: Which, in the pictures
[429.16] Lee: On, because I'll do that one from
[432.16] Lee: Bankard
[433.16] Lee: And on the pictures it looked a bit goofy
[435.16] Lee: But everyone was saying, oh, it's quite good
[437.16] Lee: Looks at a few videos on YouTube
[439.16] Lee: Because, of course, that's how you find out whether something flies or not
[442.16] Lee: And it was doing stupid speed
[444.16] Lee: So I thought, I'll get one in
[445.16] Lee: And it arrived today
[446.16] Lee: And unpacking it
[448.16] Lee: I'm quite impressed
[449.16] Lee: And it does remind me of
[451.16] Lee: There was a movie back in
[453.16] Lee: I think it was the 80s with Clint Eastwood
[455.16] Lee: Called Firefox
[456.16] Lee: See, this
[458.16] Lee: Yeah, there's a
[460.16] (Patrons): Below
[461.16] Lee: Below's a grenade
[462.16] Lee: It is now
[463.16] Lee: Back then it was like the secret code name
[465.16] Lee: For a special, you know, Soviet MiG
[467.16] Lee: Their new hypersonic plane that he stole
[470.16] Lee: Because, you know, it was Clint Eastwood
[471.16] Lee: But that plane looked epic
[473.16] Lee: It's probably one of my favorite plane designs
[475.16] Lee: It kind of looks a little bit like that
[478.16] Lee: It's even got canards
[480.16] Lee: Is that how you say those?
[482.16] Lee: At the front
[483.16] Lee: I'm not sure they do anything
[484.16] Lee: But it looks epic
[485.16] Lee: So that is
[487.16] Lee: Is going to have my
[489.16] Lee: And little Ina flight controller in it
[491.16] Lee: And then the real reason I kind of got it
[494.16] Lee: Is because I'm getting in an FPV combat system
[497.16] Lee: To have a play with a couple of my friends
[499.16] Lee: I'm getting, I think, three
[501.16] Lee: So I'm going to have one
[503.16] Lee: A couple of mates are going to have one
[504.16] Lee: And we're going to be able to do aerial dogfighting
[506.16] Lee: So it's like
[507.16] Lee: You had the guy on a couple of weeks ago
[509.16] Lee: On here, actually, I think
[511.16] Lee: And of course, you know, I thought
[513.16] Lee: 100 mile an hour super agile wing
[515.16] Lee: Is just the kind of thing
[517.16] Lee: And then when my friends found out
[519.16] Lee: What I was going to put it in
[520.16] Lee: They did the eye roll
[521.16] Lee: Because they were just going to stick it
[522.16] Lee: In any old thing
[523.16] Lee: So unfortunately now
[525.16] Lee: They'll probably end up having three of them
[527.16] Lee: Because the guy who did the FPV system
[529.16] Lee: When I sent in the pitch of it today
[531.16] Lee: Went, hey, the plane I'm going to put it in is here
[533.16] Lee: He went, oh, right
[534.16] Lee: So you're flying the same thing
[535.16] Lee: To make it fair
[538.16] Lee: No, yes, probably
[541.16] Lee: I just had this great idea of them, you know
[543.16] Lee: Poodling along a little wing
[544.16] Lee: And me doing a 100 mile an hour pass
[546.16] Lee: And shooting them and zooming away into the sky
[547.16] Lee: I don't think it's going to work like that
[549.16] Lee: But actually, it's a really nice model
[552.16] Lee: It isn't particularly expensive
[554.16] Lee: It's got tons of room in there
[556.16] Lee: So I'm going to have a lot of fun
[559.16] Lee: Of X2 or X3 days building it
[561.16] Lee: And I haven't built a fixed wing model
[564.16] Lee: For probably five or six weeks
[566.16] Lee: Something like that
[567.16] Lee: And I've just
[568.16] Lee: I don't know about you guys
[569.16] Lee: But I get as much fun out of the building
[571.16] Lee: And the messing
[572.16] Lee: And the problem solving
[573.16] Lee: As I do with the flying
[574.16] Lee: And that stuff
[575.16] Lee: And I've not been building anything
[577.16] Lee: Because, you know, Wayne and I talked
[579.16] Lee: Kirikit and I talked a couple weeks ago about this
[582.16] Lee: You know, the China thing
[583.16] Lee: And the products coming in from China
[586.16] Lee: After Chinese New Year
[587.16] Lee: It's been really slow to get going again
[590.16] Lee: So there hasn't been a lot of stuff to review
[592.16] Lee: So there hasn't been all the stuff coming in for you to play with
[595.16] Lee: I'm really looking forward to setting that up
[597.16] Lee: Because in the videos I've seen of people playing with it
[600.16] Lee: It's a really fast agile wing
[602.16] Lee: And my mate is now
[603.16] Lee: Both of my mates
[605.16] Lee: We've been practicing
[607.16] Lee: Playing follow the leader in the sky
[609.16] Lee: So actually, you know, finding the other pilot
[611.16] Lee: Getting in behind them
[612.16] Lee: And following them around
[613.16] Lee: Because the thing is
[614.16] Lee: When you do lots of FPV with fixed wing
[616.16] Lee: That's not
[617.16] Lee: Unless you're filming
[619.16] Lee: You don't tend to do that naturally anyway
[621.16] Lee: You know, you don't tend to try and stay behind
[624.16] Lee: And it's been really, really good fun
[626.16] Lee: So yeah, it is, is the short answer
[629.16] Lee: Yeah, it's a dolphin
[630.16] Lee: The first video will be up on Sunday
[633.16] Lee: And I'll probably be asking people for what motor and prop combo
[636.16] Lee: It's come with one
[637.16] Lee: But I don't think it's the one that will give you crazy insane speeds
[641.16] Lee: I think you need more thrust
[643.16] Curry: So is it a regular motor push-up prop
[645.16] Curry: As opposed to like an EDF or something?
[647.16] Lee: No, it's a regular push-up prop
[650.16] Lee: I'm not a massive fan of EDFs
[652.16] Lee: I think they look really cool
[654.16] Lee: But they burn so much battery
[656.16] Lee: You know, if you need to
[658.16] Curry: I make a lot of noise
[659.16] Lee: They make a huge amount of noise
[661.16] Lee: But then again, you know, some of these do as well
[664.16] Lee: I mean, look at the noise you get from something like a drag
[666.16] Lee: Or the E-wing's Black Hawk
[668.16] Lee: I mean, those things just make a horrible screaming noise
[671.16] Lee: Well, actually, it's not horrible, it's fantastic
[673.16] Lee: But it does mean that, you know, if you fly anywhere
[676.16] Lee: But in the middle of nowhere
[677.16] Lee: You know, you get people kind of stood at the edge of the field
[680.16] Lee: Kind of glowering at you when you bring it into land
[682.16] Lee: Asking you what you think you're playing at
[684.16] Lee: But I'm hoping this will be the same
[686.16] Lee: But this one will have pretend guns
[688.16] Lee: And I can shoot at my friends
[690.16] Lee: It'll be fantastic
[691.16] Lee: What's not to love
[693.16] Lee: I've got to ask though, Jack, are you still doing the fixed-wing stuff?
[697.16] Lee: Because that sounded like you were doing quads the other day
[700.16] Jack: Yes, I've built
[703.16] Jack: Well, just last night
[706.16] Jack: I finished the
[709.16] Jack: I finished soldering the ESC and
[713.16] Jack: Motor combo for my flight desk hub
[717.16] Jack: So I kind of built that for
[721.16] Jack: You know, something short
[723.16] Jack: Swallows it, short takeoff and landing
[725.16] Jack: Stole?
[726.16] Jack: Yeah, and I don't know, some fixed-wing
[730.16] Jack: And
[733.16] Jack: I don't know
[734.16] Jack: I don't know these terms, but
[737.16] Jack: Yeah, something to fly around
[739.16] Jack: Sheldon's that might be quite good
[741.16] Jack: And I've brought a streamer with me
[744.16] Jack: So we can have a little
[746.16] Jack: A little chase
[747.16] Jack: I don't know whether to stick FPV in it
[749.16] Jack: And I'm kind of
[751.16] Jack: I'm hanging on
[752.16] Jack: I'm desperately hanging on for
[754.16] Jack: The update for INAF
[758.16] Jack: Because INAF
[760.16] Jack: I'm kind of waiting for it to
[762.16] Jack: Go past three and
[764.16] Jack: Sort of settle out and stuff like that
[766.16] Jack: So it's still there
[769.16] Jack: I've got my wings, but I'm just kind of like
[771.16] Jack: Hanging on for the updates
[773.16] Frank: And you particular feature that you're waiting for or?
[781.18] Jack: Yes, but I can't remember anymore
[787.18] Jack: So I went to the final update
[790.18] Jack: Of this is incredibly
[793.18] Jack: Thrilling information, but I went for the
[795.18] Jack: You're not listening here a season, are you?
[797.18] Jack: No, I finally went for the
[799.18] Jack: You know like the update for the
[800.18] Jack: Taranis
[802.18] Jack: So that you know you don't get the joystick problem anymore and stuff
[805.18] Jack: And then you know we might be switching over to
[808.18] Jack: Is it Edge or something? I don't know
[810.18] Jack: I can't remember what it's called
[812.18] Jack: You know like there's going to be a fork of
[814.18] Jack: OpenTX, but anyway
[816.18] Jack: Yeah, updating that for some reason has
[819.18] Jack: Unbound all my
[821.18] Jack: Crossfire receivers
[823.18] Lee: Okay, it's the receiver number
[825.18] Lee: I'll send you the link to the
[827.18] Lee: Video that explains what it is because
[829.18] Jack: Oh no, I've fallen into that land mine
[834.18] Jack: There's a video for that
[836.18] Lee: There is a video for that, yeah
[838.18] Jack: What you should do is have multibind
[840.18] Jack: No, no, no, no
[842.18] Jack: I can't get the Wi-Fi to show up
[844.18] Lee: No, you don't need that
[845.18] Lee: Just change your rxnum to
[847.18] Lee: Zero on your crossfire models because
[849.18] Lee: rxnum in later versions of OpenTX
[851.18] Lee: Is actually used as part of the
[853.18] Lee: Bind stuff with Crossfire
[854.18] Lee: And before it didn't care about it
[856.18] Lee: So I had loads of people
[859.18] Lee: Sending me that exact question about
[861.18] Lee: I've done an update, I can't bind
[863.18] Lee: So I don't tend to be on the very latest
[866.18] Lee: Versions of OpenTX
[868.18] Lee: For my flight radio, so I hadn't bumped into it
[871.18] Lee: So I kind of just messaged Trappy and went
[873.18] Lee: What's going on?
[874.18] Lee: He went
[875.18] Lee: It's rxnum
[877.18] Lee: What?
[878.18] Lee: So he explained to me
[879.18] Lee: And I did a video about it
[880.18] Lee: And everyone was like
[881.18] Lee: Oh, okay
[882.18] Lee: But you obviously haven't found it
[883.18] Lee: So that's the answer, brother
[884.18] Lee: So yeah, rxnum
[885.18] Lee: But if you set it to the default number of zero
[887.18] Lee: You should be fine, right?
[888.18] Jack: Yeah
[889.18] Jack: So whilst I was flying
[892.18] Jack: Nothing was bound
[894.18] Jack: So I met up with Tom for flying
[896.18] Jack: And he was like
[897.18] Jack: Digby Dan hasn't flown for about three years
[900.18] Jack: Because his life's been in the air
[902.18] Jack: Digby, if you're listening, how are you doing?
[904.18] Jack: And then he meets up with me
[906.18] Jack: And he's just like
[908.18] Jack: Why am I flying with these two noobs?
[910.18] Jack: Like I show up like nothing's bound
[912.18] Jack: On my transmitter
[915.18] Jack: And Digby Dan like instantly crashes into a tree
[919.18] Jack: So I had all that
[921.18] Jack: And also I noticed something really weird
[923.18] Jack: Was that my crossfire knew it was connected to a KISS flight controller
[926.18] Jack: That was new
[927.18] Jack: I didn't click on it
[928.18] Jack: But I saw that it knew what it was connected to
[931.18] Jack: Is there a video for that as well?
[933.18] Jack: No, but
[934.18] Jack: It's coming
[935.18] Jack: Yes and no
[936.18] Jack: It's number four on the list
[938.18] Lee: Yeah
[939.18] Lee: I'm not going to get into all the detail
[941.18] Lee: Because it just makes me sound a bit boring
[943.18] Lee: No, that's why we have you on
[945.18] Lee: Okay, so
[948.18] Lee: When you actually interrogate the crossfire system via the Lua script
[951.18] Lee: You know the little menu that
[953.18] Lee: And apologies to all of you that aren't crossfire or tracer pilots
[956.18] Lee: Because this isn't going to be interesting at all
[958.18] Lee: But the way it works is that you go into the Lua script
[960.18] Lee: And it shows you the devices that are currently connected
[962.18] Lee: You kind of click on that device
[964.18] Lee: And then this menu magically kind of appears, right?
[967.18] Lee: That menu isn't set anywhere
[969.18] Lee: That menu is actually a dynamically created hierarchical structure
[974.18] Lee: That's within Smart Audio
[976.18] Lee: I think it is in it for TBS, Smart Audio
[978.18] Lee: So there's this fantastic stuff within Smart Audio
[982.18] Lee: That the technology
[983.18] Lee: And Trappie doesn't really talk about it
[985.18] Lee: And it'll probably be not annoyed at me for talking about this
[987.18] Lee: But the way
[988.18] Lee: So what it means is that when they change things in the code
[992.18] Lee: You don't then have to update the Lua script to have the right menu
[996.18] Lee: It dynamically creates the menu
[998.18] Lee: And that's why it kind of appears line by line
[1000.18] Lee: KISS use exactly the same system
[1003.18] Lee: And they had the little keychain
[1005.18] Lee: I did a video on it a long time ago
[1008.18] Lee: And this little keychain
[1009.18] Lee: You could actually plug into your TBS system
[1012.18] Lee: And navigate the menu as though it was a Lua script
[1014.18] Lee: Because it just read the menu out
[1016.18] Lee: And you could navigate and change the settings
[1018.18] Lee: So that's why
[1019.18] Lee: So basically, yeah, that's why it works
[1021.18] Lee: But it's very cool the first time it does it
[1023.18] Jack: I read the manual on the KISS manual
[1026.18] Jack: And did you know, whilst disarmed
[1028.18] Jack: You can change channel power
[1031.18] Jack: And whatever
[1036.18] Jack: What is it?
[1037.18] Lee: Band channel power
[1039.18] Jack: That's it
[1040.18] Jack: Yeah
[1041.18] Jack: Yeah, disarmed
[1042.18] Jack: And you can move
[1043.18] Jack: You can just move the sticks like your left
[1046.18] Jack: And then up and down on the other picture
[1050.18] Jack: I can't remember, but I read that
[1052.18] Jack: And, yeah, apparently you can buy smart audio
[1055.18] Jack: Or, you know, tramp
[1058.18] Jack: You can sit there and move channel
[1060.18] Jack: I did not know that
[1062.18] Jack: I was like, what the hell?
[1063.18] Jack: And that's been in there
[1064.18] Frank: And next you'll be telling me that you can have a display on the screen, Jack
[1069.18] Frank: Well, yeah, I would say
[1070.18] Curry: That is the basis of smart audio, isn't it?
[1072.18] Curry: What you're describing
[1073.18] Curry: Painting channels and stuff without being armed
[1075.18] Curry: When you are armed and flying
[1077.18] Curry: It's a worse idea to change channels, is what I find
[1079.18] Jack: Yeah, but no, it's like the stick command
[1082.18] Jack: Of all, you know, like level calibration and all that sort of stuff
[1086.18] Jack: That's what I meant
[1087.18] Jack: I didn't know that that was a feature
[1090.18] Jack: I just think it's like a kiss
[1091.18] Curry: You're not going into the OSD menu
[1093.18] Curry: And you're like, oh, I'll just change a load of stuff
[1095.18] Curry: There's no OSDs
[1096.18] Curry: I've tried OSDs
[1099.18] Jack: And it just refuses to connect to anything
[1101.18] Curry: There was a much worse update for me
[1103.18] Curry: Like ages ago, I updated OpenTX firmware
[1108.18] Curry: And it put an extra mix in
[1110.18] Curry: You know, when you set up a mix
[1111.18] Curry: You can have like a source of all your channels
[1113.18] Curry: And you use one called Max sometimes for switches
[1116.18] Curry: And they put an extra one in
[1117.18] Curry: And it obviously worked on like a number
[1119.18] Curry: So I went to look at all my models
[1121.18] Curry: All the mix had the wrong source
[1124.18] Curry: And every single one
[1125.18] Curry: I had to go through like 60 memories
[1127.18] Curry: To go and change them all
[1128.18] Curry: Just to bring them back to working state
[1130.18] Curry: Which is, I think, worse than binding
[1132.18] Lee: I think this is the reason why Edge TX is kind of coming out
[1138.18] Lee: Because I think there's a growing number of people
[1141.18] Lee: Who are finding OpenTX is less of a solution
[1145.18] Lee: And they're becoming part of the problem
[1147.18] Lee: So it's going to be interesting how that actually works out
[1151.18] Lee: I've been invited to the Discord server to be part of it
[1155.18] Lee: So I'm kind of interested
[1156.18] Lee: Because as a big fan of OpenTX in the early days
[1161.18] Lee: And for those of you that have only been in the hobby for a couple of years
[1165.18] Lee: You're lucky you missed a lot of the crap
[1168.18] Lee: It used to be that the radios were incredibly expensive
[1172.18] Lee: Really dumb
[1174.18] Lee: And then the OpenTX system came out, what, 2014 really?
[1178.18] Lee: Kind of caught, you know, became a big thing
[1181.18] Lee: Which is forever in the hobby
[1183.18] Lee: But then OpenTX has continued to get more and more refined
[1187.18] Lee: And support more and more radios
[1188.18] Lee: But it hasn't got any easier over that time to use
[1191.18] Lee: You know, there's still all of the wizards aren't there in the majority of radios
[1197.18] Lee: There's no ability to abstract all that complexity away from a new user
[1201.18] Lee: To make it simple for them
[1203.18] Lee: You know, you literally have to watch 20 videos
[1206.18] Lee: Which, you know, is great for my channel
[1208.18] Lee: Thanks everybody for watching that
[1209.18] Lee: But you have to watch 20 videos in order to learn how to set a model up
[1213.18] Lee: Or change things
[1214.18] Lee: Or where did your expo
[1215.18] Lee: Or, you know, how do you reverse a channel
[1218.18] Lee: And it should, you know, we've got these wonderfully powerful radios
[1221.18] Lee: With beautiful colour screens, potentially touch
[1224.18] Lee: That could have really cute Lua scripts that you could walk you through
[1228.18] Lee: Like Spectrum, photographer-esque, you know, kind of what you're setting up today
[1232.18] Lee: And the other thing I actually just got in
[1236.18] Lee: I've got the e-Sheen version of the TX16S
[1240.18] Lee: So the RadioMaster version
[1242.18] Lee: They've e-Sheen have brought one out
[1244.18] Lee: Which I was a little bit suspicious about
[1246.18] Lee: So I thought I'll get one of those in
[1248.18] Lee: So I got that in, unpacked it and started looking at it
[1251.18] Lee: And they've changed a few things around on the radio
[1253.18] Lee: So physically some of the buttons are in different places
[1256.18] Lee: And actually it's pretty good
[1258.18] Lee: So I got onto RadioMaster and I said to the guys over there
[1261.18] Lee: I said, hang on a minute
[1262.18] Lee: Did you actually make this for them?
[1264.18] Lee: And they went, oh yeah, we OEM it for them
[1267.18] Lee: I was like, oh, okay
[1268.18] Lee: That explains why the hardware is kind of as good as the RadioMaster stuff
[1273.18] Lee: But then when I turned it on
[1275.18] Lee: They've loaded all model memories for all of their bind and fly models
[1281.18] Lee: Like the E160 helicopter
[1283.18] Lee: They're all sat there ready to bind
[1285.18] Lee: And I was like, wow, why am I so impressed with this?
[1290.18] Lee: Because actually this is a really obvious thing to do
[1293.18] Lee: You know, we should get it so that there's a way that you just plug an SD card in
[1297.18] Lee: Or you connect it up to your computer and just click one button
[1300.18] Lee: And it loads the model into your radio
[1302.18] Lee: You don't have to import and export stuff in companion
[1305.18] Lee: It is incredibly
[1306.18] Lee: It can be an awful lot simpler
[1309.18] Lee: And I really hope that with Edge we start to get that
[1312.18] Lee: Or it lights a fire under OpenTX
[1314.18] Lee: But that they actually stop just tinkering around and messing about
[1319.18] Lee: And actually give an operating system that I'd say you don't have to watch 20 videos for
[1324.18] Lee: Because it's amazing how many times I go to fly with mates
[1327.18] Lee: And they'll be, oh, I'm glad you're here, mate
[1331.18] Lee: I was trying to set up this the other day
[1333.18] Lee: And I've really cocked it up because it's gone
[1335.18] Lee: My ailerons now backwards and I can't figure out what I've done
[1338.18] Lee: You know, and you spend
[1339.18] Lee: And it's fine, that's fine
[1340.18] Lee: It's a two minute job to fix them all
[1342.18] Lee: But it's literally like you have this little line of two or three guys
[1344.18] Lee: Of like, I pressed a button
[1347.18] Lee: And they have no idea what I've done
[1348.18] Lee: But I've completely cocked it up
[1352.18] Jack: There's not many things I hate about Frank, right?
[1355.18] Jack: But the one thing that really pisses on my bonfire with Frank
[1360.18] Jack: Is that he doesn't go into the
[1362.18] Jack: He doesn't reverse a channel properly on a transmitter
[1366.18] Jack: He adjusts the weight into the negative value
[1370.18] Jack: And then that means that the trim switches are the wrong way round
[1375.18] Lee: Only if you do that on the inputs
[1377.18] Lee: If you do it on the outputs, the trims still work the right way round
[1381.18] Curry: But that is the thing with Edge
[1383.18] Lee: There's no one way of doing it
[1386.18] Lee: Exactly right
[1387.18] Lee: And this is the thing, right?
[1388.18] Lee: And people get really quite emotional about their way of doing it
[1394.18] Lee: So someone will show them the way of setting the radio on
[1396.18] Jack: Yeah, Frank's way's wrong
[1398.18] Lee: Sorry, Frank
[1399.18] Lee: Yeah, exactly right
[1400.18] Frank: And I'm not sure
[1401.18] Frank: It's not because if I'm doing, for example, flaperons
[1405.18] Frank: Or something maybe, you know, where you've got different inputs being mixed into a single output
[1413.18] Frank: And it's the input that is wrong
[1415.18] Frank: Then they've got to change the input
[1417.18] Frank: That's surely how that works
[1420.18] Jack: Yeah, the little arrows on the output
[1422.18] Jack: I'm sorry
[1423.18] Lee: That's the way that I do it now
[1425.18] Lee: And I, but there's, as Wayne says, there's two or three ways to do it in every single way
[1431.18] Lee: And the issue is, is that when you are trying to unpick someone else
[1436.18] Lee: Because the thing that always makes my blood run cold a little bit
[1439.18] Lee: Is when someone like a Patreon will say, I've tried to do a mix
[1442.18] Lee: I've tried to do a setup, it doesn't work
[1444.18] Lee: Can you have a look?
[1445.18] Lee: Because you kind of go, yeah
[1448.18] Lee: Because you know, you can't just look at the little bit they've done, right
[1452.18] Lee: The one screen in companion, if they send you the model memory
[1455.18] Lee: You've actually got to check literally everything
[1457.18] Lee: Because there's three or four places you can reverse the channel
[1459.18] Lee: And they might have reversed it here
[1461.18] Lee: But then they might have reversed it back somewhere else
[1464.18] Lee: And then they may have done it somewhere else
[1465.18] Lee: And then added a special function
[1468.18] Frank: There's an override to this value
[1472.18] Lee: Yeah, absolutely
[1473.18] Lee: And like Wayne said, you know, you can update the OpenTX
[1476.18] Lee: And it just goes, I've changed everything for you
[1479.18] Lee: You're ready
[1480.18] Lee: And it's completely screwed the whole thing up
[1482.18] Lee: So yeah, EdgeTX is going to be interesting
[1486.18] Lee: And I'm going to be, I've got one radio here
[1488.18] Lee: I'm actually going to use that eSheen radio as my test bed for it and have a play
[1493.18] Lee: But I just hope that it means that OpenTX actually start thinking about what we as pilots want
[1500.18] Lee: Rather than just bring us little things
[1502.18] Frank: So with the Edge, other developers left from that
[1506.18] Frank: Just kind of another kind of group of hobbyists that have decided to kind of take things on their own back
[1512.18] Frank: Or is there a kind of group supporting it that's kind of, is there a kind of mission in particular?
[1520.18] Lee: I'm not completely sure until I get a lot deeper into it about how broad it goes
[1526.18] Lee: I know there is a group of manufacturers who are getting
[1531.18] Lee: Because at the moment, you know, a lot of the innovation that we use in the hobby, all the radios and stuff
[1536.18] Lee: Have this one common thread, which is OpenTX
[1539.18] Lee: And if you can't get OpenTX to talk to you nicely or you can't meet their requirements
[1543.18] Lee: Or you don't want to pay them that amount of money
[1545.18] Lee: Then you have FreedomTX or you have, you know, XYZTX or whatever on your radios
[1550.18] Lee: You know, the TBS Tango stuff still isn't in there
[1554.18] Lee: The, oh god, what was that bloody radio? Nirvana radio
[1558.18] Lee: Do you remember that one?
[1560.18] Frank: The Nirvana radio, I think, because it's got the, I think, I'm fairly certain NJ's got that on
[1566.18] Jack: It looks like a robotic dildo, I hate that thing
[1569.18] Lee: It does look like a sex toy, but it is actually not a bad radio
[1574.18] Lee: The idea was very good, it's just that, well, I won't get into details
[1580.18] Lee: Well, at least
[1582.18] Lee: So OpenTX is kind of the common thing around it
[1586.18] Lee: I'm sure there's lots of people who would love just to be able to be mastered
[1590.18] Lee: More masters of their own destiny
[1592.18] Lee: And, you know, there's loads of things that I've been asking OpenTX for
[1596.18] Lee: That they're just not interested in doing
[1599.18] Lee: And I kind of think they've lost their way a little bit
[1602.18] Lee: Because originally they were the answer, right?
[1604.18] Lee: You know, we all used OpenTX because it was so powerful and it was great
[1607.18] Lee: And it was on radios that cost 150 quid rather than 400 pounds for your spectrum
[1612.18] Jack: Amen, painless, amen
[1615.18] Jack: What I was going to say, there's something that Frankie is right about
[1619.18] Jack: Guess what I bought and I picked up a Battery XL, Batsafe XL box
[1629.18] Jack: I ordered it from, do you remember these people called, they're partnered with Droneworks
[1636.18] Jack: Make it build it
[1638.18] Jack: And the DHL driver doesn't understand how a button works properly
[1646.18] Jack: Because he didn't press my doorbell hard enough
[1649.18] Jack: So the buzzer never went off, so I waited in all day for this parcel
[1653.18] Lee: With it sat on the doorstep
[1655.18] Jack: No, drop it, hide it, lose it
[1657.18] Jack: Somebody like took a photo of my door
[1660.18] Jack: And then went, sorry we missed you
[1662.18] Jack: And I'm like, no, I'm in
[1665.18] Jack: Yeah, I know
[1667.18] Jack: So there's going to be like the worst note tomorrow
[1669.18] Jack: Being like, oy Steve, learn how to press a button
[1673.18] Jack: Written on a posting note
[1675.18] Jack: So he's probably going to drop kick my eye
[1677.18] Frank: I haven't said that
[1678.18] Frank: I have had that problem with your doorbell before
[1682.46] Frank: I've pressed it
[1683.46] Frank: I've been like, I've definitely pressed it
[1685.46] Frank: The light went out and everything
[1687.46] Frank: And you didn't hear anything
[1690.46] Frank: It might be your end
[1694.46] Jack: I went down and I pressed it
[1696.46] Jack: And it worked
[1697.46] Jack: I think it's because like
[1699.46] Jack: Could you say
[1700.46] Jack: Let me take that thing apart
[1701.46] Jack: No, I wasn't asleep, I was in the shower
[1704.46] Curry: I think it's probably
[1706.46] Curry: That's the optimum time to answer the door when you're in the shower
[1709.46] Curry: I don't know
[1711.46] Frank: I think it's probably one of those things where Jack knows the way that it works
[1716.46] Frank: And can't understand that they don't have that neck
[1719.46] Jack: Yeah
[1720.46] Jack: Yeah, press it till you hear it
[1723.46] Curry: Then again, I got an irate call from a delivery driver
[1726.46] Curry: Telling me he was ringing my doorbell
[1728.46] Curry: Why wasn't I answering?
[1729.46] Curry: So when I opened the door, there was nobody there
[1731.46] Curry: And when I looked out, he was next door ringing next door
[1734.46] Curry: The inability to be able to recognize this great big number on the door
[1738.46] Curry: But be able to phone me
[1741.46] Curry: Using presumably numbers on his phone was quite staggering
[1744.46] Jack: Without doxxing myself, I have a street that is very close to me
[1749.46] Jack: Two streets away
[1750.46] Jack: That sounds like my street
[1753.46] Jack: And often, you get delivery drivers trying to deliver to that house
[1758.46] Jack: And I get an irate phone call being like
[1762.46] Jack: I'm outside and I'm like
[1764.46] Jack: No, you're not
[1765.46] Jack: And they're like
[1766.46] Jack: I am
[1767.46] Jack: And I'm like
[1769.46] Jack: Okay, hang on
[1770.46] Jack: Let me just go downstairs
[1771.46] Jack: I'm now outside my house
[1773.46] Jack: And they're like
[1774.46] Jack: No, you're not
[1775.46] Jack: And I'm like
[1776.46] Jack: I know where I live
[1782.46] Jack: Because I'm here right now
[1784.46] Jack: You're not
[1785.46] Jack: If you read the address properly
[1787.46] Jack: And then they really don't like that
[1791.46] Jack: I just put the postcode in, god damn you
[1794.46] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience
[1797.46] Frank: Downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only
[1801.46] Frank: Censored to please the iTunes people
[1803.46] Frank: Hosted on the internet
[1804.46] Frank: Forwarded through to your podcast provider
[1806.46] Frank: Downloaded, playing on your device
[1808.46] Frank: And is now playing in your ears
[1810.46] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons
[1812.46] Frank: Consider joining them
[1813.46] Frank: And you'll also get other online benefits
[1815.46] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com
[1817.46] Frank: 4 slash
[1818.46] Frank: Let's drone out
[1819.46] Lee: So we did actually get completely away from the
[1822.46] Lee: Favourite feature of iNow 3.0 that Jack was looking forward to
[1826.46] Jack: I can't remember
[1828.46] Jack: All that comes to my head is
[1831.46] Jack: Safe landing zones or some shit
[1833.46] Jack: And I can't get
[1835.46] Jack: I can't get position hold to work on a wing
[1837.46] Jack: It doesn't work
[1838.46] Jack: Surely that's just for quads
[1845.46] Lee: See, Wayne and I know the international symbol for loiter
[1848.46] Lee: A symbol for loiter
[1849.46] Jack: Circles
[1851.46] Jack: That's what I want to work
[1853.46] Jack: And I haven't got two modes selected
[1855.46] Curry: Isn't that a figure eight?
[1857.46] Curry: Yeah
[1858.46] Curry: I never circle
[1861.46] Frank: Jack, are you seriously saying that you're waiting to fly
[1864.46] Frank: Your flight test models
[1866.46] Frank: Because you want iNav to be able to
[1869.46] Frank: Pick a place to loiter
[1872.46] Jack: No
[1874.46] Jack: No, they're my wings
[1875.46] Jack: I don't
[1877.46] Jack: Only the RC Explorer
[1881.46] Jack: Has got an iNav board in it
[1884.46] Jack: And I think that's
[1886.46] Jack: What's happened with that is
[1888.46] Jack: I set it up
[1889.46] Jack: And I can't remember whether I finished setting it up
[1892.46] Jack: Or if I went
[1895.46] Jack: Do you not leave post-it notes for yourself?
[1897.46] Jack: No, I mean I've wrote on
[1899.46] Jack: I've written on stuff
[1901.46] Jack: This is f*** with a
[1904.46] Jack: With
[1905.46] Jack: That's what the white markers are for
[1908.46] Jack: And
[1910.46] Jack: Yeah, these
[1911.46] Jack: These markers, the paint markers
[1915.46] Lee: Can I just say, Frank, I'm so pleased
[1917.46] Lee: I'm not the only one that literally does that
[1919.46] Lee: That writes on the things that I was up to
[1921.46] Lee: So that I'm not knackered
[1923.46] Lee: Because the thing is, if you do more than one
[1925.46] Lee: Well, the thing is, I forget
[1927.46] Lee: And then I go to the field
[1928.46] Lee: And then, because actually this week I had a disaster
[1931.46] Lee: Because I forgot, on the bottom of my ZOHD dart
[1934.46] Lee: The little dart that I love
[1936.46] Lee: Because it's got a vertical antenna for crossfire
[1938.46] Lee: I've got this little kind of foam comb that goes over it
[1941.46] Lee: To stop it getting smashed in the boot
[1944.46] Lee: Because of course it sticks below the model, right?
[1946.46] Lee: And it's got one of those, you know those
[1948.46] Lee: Remove before flight key rings
[1950.46] Lee: Ha, ha, ha
[1951.46] Lee: The red one
[1952.46] Lee: Oh no, you don't want to know
[1953.46] Jack: They're not, right?
[1954.46] Lee: No, no, we just did it as a laugh
[1956.46] Lee: And it stayed on there
[1957.46] Lee: And anyway, it turns out that
[1959.46] Lee: And I have flown it and forgotten to take that little thing off the bottom
[1963.46] Lee: And only when it's landed
[1965.46] Lee: And I've seen this piece of foam floating around
[1967.46] Lee: And I'm like, ah
[1969.46] Lee: And then I've gone and realised that
[1970.46] Lee: Oh, you idiot, you were flying with this thing flapping in the wind
[1974.46] Lee: It turns out, I launched it
[1977.46] Lee: And this little streamer thing got caught in the prop
[1980.46] Lee: And the motor then stopped
[1983.46] Lee: Sorry, the prop stopped, but the motor continued to turn
[1985.46] Lee: So it twisted the wires all the way up to the ESC
[1988.46] Lee: Then pulled it out, then snapped half the prop off
[1991.46] Lee: Funnily enough, it didn't go very well
[1993.46] Lee: Yeah, and it all came and it was all over
[1995.46] Lee: But iNav is, yeah
[1997.46] Lee: If you're struggling with iNav, mate
[1999.46] Lee: If you want to kind of go through, then let me know
[2001.46] Lee: But I definitely need to have a little list
[2003.46] Lee: Because I will do things on a model
[2006.46] Lee: And then get distracted
[2008.46] Lee: And I won't remember where I'm up to
[2010.46] Lee: And with iNav, if you miss one thing
[2012.46] Lee: It won't work
[2014.46] Jack: Yeah, I could fly on manual mode
[2017.46] Jack: I could fly on level mode
[2020.46] Jack: And it works fine
[2021.46] Jack: Return to home works beautifully
[2023.46] Jack: It will fly back to me
[2025.46] Jack: And circle me
[2028.46] Jack: But for some reason
[2030.46] Jack: If I select position hold
[2034.46] Jack: It just drops
[2036.46] Jack: It just kind of
[2038.46] Jack: And you take your hands off the sticks
[2040.46] Jack: It just literally nose dives into the ground
[2043.46] Lee: So level is okay
[2046.46] Lee: So what, horizon or angle is okay
[2050.46] Lee: Return to home, which actually uses all the same modes
[2053.46] Lee: And more works fine
[2056.46] Lee: That is very weird
[2058.46] Jack: I know, and I don't know
[2060.46] Jack: I know that I'm the problem
[2062.46] Jack: You know when you're like
[2064.46] Jack: I have come here
[2065.46] Jack: But I can't figure out what I've done
[2068.46] Jack: Does it think it's a helicopter?
[2070.46] Jack: Have I got two modes selected?
[2072.46] Jack: No
[2073.46] Jack: Don't make me get it down
[2075.46] Jack: No, I know
[2077.46] Jack: In your defence, that was the problem last time
[2080.46] Jack: But it isn't there, okay
[2082.46] Jack: You need to put hold with position
[2084.46] Jack: Hold with position hold
[2086.46] Jack: Is that right?
[2088.46] Lee: If you do GPS
[2091.46] Lee: If you have the model trimmed
[2093.46] Lee: So that at cruise it maintains the height
[2096.46] Lee: You don't necessarily need altitude hold
[2099.46] Lee: But it definitely helps if you're in like a windy situation
[2102.46] Lee: And the plane's getting bounced around
[2106.18] Lee: But I'm quite, again
[2108.18] Lee: Just give me a shout
[2110.18] Lee: Don't suffer in silence
[2112.18] Jack: No, I want to
[2114.18] Jack: One thing I do
[2116.18] Curry: But I reckon if I took a look
[2118.18] Curry: GitHub repository and read out
[2120.18] Curry: What was going into version 3
[2122.18] Curry: It wouldn't say
[2123.18] Curry: Position hold on fixed wing makes model crash
[2125.18] Jack: No, I know
[2131.18] Jack: Also, does anyone remember
[2133.18] Jack: The old TBS VTX is
[2137.18] Jack: You know that I run on 5 volts
[2139.18] Jack: Has anyone got any idea
[2141.18] Jack: Of a decent power supply
[2143.18] Jack: I chose
[2145.18] Jack: A voltage thing to run that off
[2148.18] Jack: Because there's nothing
[2150.18] Lee: I put one of the little
[2153.18] Lee: HGLRC nano VTXs
[2156.18] Lee: You know the one that's the size of your thumbnail
[2158.18] Lee: In a model
[2160.18] Lee: That thing I made last week
[2162.18] Lee: And then realised it was only 5 volts
[2164.18] Lee: And kind of went
[2166.18] Lee: And used one of the little made tech
[2170.18] Lee: Again, a thumbnail size thing
[2173.18] Jack: The made tech voltage divider
[2176.18] Lee: Yeah, and it worked beautifully
[2178.18] Lee: Really good
[2179.18] Lee: That was in fixed wing
[2180.18] Lee: So I didn't have to use any catch
[2182.18] Lee: Or any of that crap
[2183.18] Jack: Yeah, that's what I'm trying to
[2185.18] Jack: That's the problem I've got
[2187.18] Jack: Is that I've got a ton of noise
[2189.18] Jack: So you need an LC filter
[2191.18] Jack: Or something in there as well
[2193.18] Jack: I found a little thing
[2197.18] Jack: But I think it's because my camera
[2199.18] Jack: Wasn't tied to it as well
[2201.18] Frank: Are you taking it straight from the battery leads
[2203.18] Frank: Or are you taking it from somewhere else?
[2205.18] Frank: No, because the battery's
[2207.18] Jack: 14, 15 volts
[2209.18] Jack: No, I mean to feed your back
[2212.18] Jack: Yes
[2214.18] Jack: The PDB
[2216.18] Lee: Shiny video is saying the
[2218.18] Lee: Polulu 5 volt regulators is good
[2220.18] Lee: And I've heard that a lot
[2222.18] Lee: I don't use them but I've heard that a lot
[2224.18] Frank: I've used them a few times
[2226.18] Frank: What do you think?
[2228.18] Frank: Yeah, I mean they do the job
[2230.18] Frank: But as you've seen
[2233.18] Frank: I put massive capacitors on everything
[2235.18] Frank: And ordered the wrong size capacitors
[2237.18] Frank: So, you know
[2238.18] Curry: Well generally speaking, ESC
[2241.18] Curry: Fixed wing normally have big old capacitors in there
[2243.18] Curry: It just depends
[2244.18] Curry: If you're using something, some Opto one
[2246.18] Curry: From a quad
[2247.18] Curry: Then that generally is noisier
[2249.18] Curry: Because the cleanup is elsewhere
[2252.18] Curry: Isn't that?
[2253.18] Jack: Yeah
[2255.85] Jack: Yeah, I just
[2258.85] Jack: I got told
[2260.85] Jack: I was chatting to
[2263.85] Jack: I was chatting to Magic Pencil about it
[2265.85] Jack: And he was like
[2266.85] Jack: Oh, it's probably because the camera's getting noise
[2268.85] Jack: Because that's coming directly off the PDB
[2270.85] Jack: And the ground level
[2272.85] Jack: Is different
[2274.85] Lee: Definitely have all the wires
[2276.85] Lee: Going back to one point for the ground, definitely
[2278.85] Lee: Because I have had that as well
[2281.85] Jack: Well, yeah, it's not the regulated ground
[2284.85] Jack: It's just going straight back to the PDB ground
[2288.85] Jack: So, I don't know
[2289.85] Jack: It's weird
[2290.85] Jack: It's weird
[2291.85] Jack: I've found that with OSDs as well
[2293.85] Jack: When you get ghosting on OSDs
[2295.85] Jack: Only like a certain type of ground
[2299.85] Lee: It's one of the worst things
[2301.85] Lee: I hate it when you make a model
[2303.85] Lee: And then you fly it
[2304.85] Lee: And then either the OSD flicks in and out
[2307.85] Lee: Or you have some weird distortion
[2309.85] Lee: It can take you
[2312.85] Lee: Days to try and figure out what it is
[2314.85] Lee: By putting LC filters in caps
[2316.85] Lee: You know, you end up well
[2317.85] Lee: It's like a big Christmas tree of crap
[2319.85] Lee: And it's still exactly the same
[2321.85] Lee: I mean, I tried to get rid of it on this brain
[2325.85] Lee: This brain dart thing that I was talking about
[2327.85] Lee: That I had to hot glue back together yesterday
[2331.85] Lee: And I tried everything to try and get it
[2332.85] Lee: And in the end I was like
[2333.85] Lee: You know what?
[2334.85] Lee: I'm not bothered
[2335.85] Lee: It's a very faint shimmer
[2338.85] Lee: Like that on the screen
[2340.85] Lee: And actually once you've been flying for 20 seconds
[2343.85] Lee: You kind of forget about
[2344.85] Lee: That you're watching what's going on anyway
[2346.85] Lee: So I was like, you know what?
[2347.85] Lee: I can't be asked
[2348.85] Lee: Because the thing is
[2349.85] Lee: You had to kind of desolder everything
[2351.85] Lee: To put the LC filter in
[2352.85] Lee: Then you had to wait for a good day
[2354.85] Lee: To go out to fly it
[2355.85] Lee: It was exactly the same
[2356.85] Lee: Then you came back
[2357.85] Lee: You took the LC filter
[2358.85] Lee: And then you put the cap in
[2359.85] Lee: And then you put the cap in the LC
[2360.85] Lee: And then you thought
[2361.85] Lee: Maybe it's the LC filters wrong
[2362.85] Lee: I put the LC filter in the other position
[2365.85] Lee: For the VTX
[2366.85] Lee: And it just
[2367.85] Lee: You know, you lose the wheel to live
[2368.85] Lee: I know
[2369.85] Lee: I mean, the modern VTXs are so much nicer, aren't they?
[2372.85] Lee: They take care of so much of that crap
[2374.85] Lee: Clearing up a lot of the stuff
[2376.85] Lee: Which version of the VTXs have you got?
[2378.85] Frank: I think Winterblue is giving us some super chat
[2383.85] Frank: Because we've been making such a good argument
[2385.85] Frank: For the DJI HD stuff
[2387.85] Frank: Which Winterblue is such a fan of
[2389.85] Frank: I think that's what he's saying here
[2391.85] Frank: He's like, oh, it's analog stuff
[2393.85] Frank: We have to deal with a load of noise and ground and stuff
[2396.85] Frank: I know
[2397.85] Jack: Winterblue is like this small brick
[2398.85] Jack: Hey, wacky wares
[2399.85] Jack: Hello, how are you doing?
[2401.85] Jack: Hey, hey
[2403.85] Curry: Maybe just swap the VTX
[2406.85] Curry: Because that is a problem
[2407.85] Curry: That I don't remember dealing with
[2409.85] Curry: In the last few years
[2411.85] Curry: It used to be the fact that
[2412.85] Curry: Talk about quads
[2414.85] Curry: You have a PDB
[2415.85] Curry: You have a flight controller
[2416.85] Curry: You'd like taking 5 volt from here
[2418.85] Curry: And the 12 volt from here
[2419.85] Curry: And you're hoping it all connects
[2420.85] Curry: These days it's just like
[2424.85] Curry: Battery and your full voltage
[2426.85] Curry: Is going into your flight controller
[2428.85] Curry: It runs it
[2429.85] Curry: You're putting your full voltage
[2430.85] Curry: Into your VTX
[2432.85] Curry: VTX can power the camera
[2433.85] Curry: Or whatever
[2434.85] Curry: Everything just handles it
[2435.85] Curry: And you get a lovely clean picture
[2437.85] Lee: Everything's HV now
[2439.85] Lee: So you can just run it from the battery
[2442.85] Lee: I'm not flight controllers
[2443.85] Lee: I mean, I must admit
[2444.85] Lee: A lot of them
[2445.85] Lee: I mean, I've been playing with
[2446.85] Lee: These are some of the new ones
[2447.85] Lee: From Holy Bro
[2448.85] Lee: Or Holly Bro
[2449.85] Lee: Depending on how you want to say it
[2452.85] Lee: Interesting as you're talking about it
[2454.85] Lee: Wayne, I've just got one in front of me here
[2455.85] Lee: But these are so good these days
[2458.85] Lee: They're actually
[2460.85] Lee: Doing all the voltage cleanup
[2462.85] Lee: You just have to solder everything on
[2464.85] Lee: And most of them these days
[2465.85] Lee: Have all the bloody cables
[2466.85] Lee: So you just kind of
[2468.85] Lee: Daisy chain them all together
[2470.85] Lee: The Matek flight controller
[2471.85] Lee: The only Matek flight controller I've ever used
[2473.85] Lee: That had really crappy voltage regulation
[2476.85] Lee: Was that little
[2478.85] Jack: The 411 one
[2479.85] Lee: The 411 wing
[2481.85] Lee: I think that was the one
[2482.85] Lee: And it was just pants
[2485.85] Lee: That was the one I ended up putting LC filters
[2487.85] Lee: And caps everywhere
[2488.85] Lee: And the 405
[2489.85] Lee: And all the others are just
[2491.85] Lee: The voltage at them is rock solid
[2494.85] Jack: The reason why I chose that VTX
[2496.85] Jack: Is because I want to send that quad
[2499.85] Jack: To someone who's new in the hobby
[2501.85] Jack: So it's an easy to look up VTX
[2503.85] Jack: Trouble is it's version 1.1 as well
[2506.85] Jack: So it's old school
[2509.85] Jack: Hasn't got small audio
[2513.85] Lee: So shiny video stuff
[2515.85] Lee: You're saying in the chat is
[2517.85] Lee: Is this because we're all using
[2519.85] Lee: Old quad parts for your wings
[2521.85] Lee: Just goes to show wings
[2523.85] Lee: Are second class citizens
[2525.85] Lee: With a winky face
[2526.85] Lee: I think that is part of the problem
[2528.85] Lee: I know one of my mates
[2529.85] Lee: Built a little 600mm wing
[2531.85] Lee: And he put a quad motor
[2533.85] Lee: And a quad prop on the back
[2535.85] Lee: With a quad ESC
[2536.85] Lee: Because that's what you have
[2537.85] Lee: Many spares been
[2538.85] Lee: And it flew like crap
[2540.85] Lee: So one of the ways is that
[2542.85] Lee: The prod
[2544.85] Lee: It's very late
[2545.85] Lee: Quad props are all designed
[2547.85] Lee: It's all about static thrust
[2549.85] Lee: It's about generating
[2551.85] Lee: enough static thrust
[2552.85] Lee: To keep the thing in the air
[2553.85] Lee: Props and motors
[2555.85] Lee: For fixed wing stuff
[2556.85] Lee: Is actually more about
[2558.85] Lee: Generating speed
[2559.85] Lee: So it's not about
[2561.85] Lee: I did a video a while ago
[2563.85] Lee: Some of you made
[2564.85] Lee: Sorry but there's a whole thing about
[2565.85] Lee: Static thrust
[2566.85] Lee: Where lots of air being pushed backwards
[2568.85] Lee: Does not equal
[2569.85] Lee: That plane
[2570.85] Lee: And the problem is
[2571.85] Lee: Is that the quad motors
[2572.85] Lee: And props
[2573.85] Lee: And fixed wing motors
[2574.85] Lee: And props
[2575.85] Lee: Are kind of designed
[2576.85] Lee: To do completely different things
[2577.85] Lee: So if you're right
[2578.85] Lee: If you use a quad system
[2579.85] Lee: On a plane
[2580.85] Lee: It's usually
[2581.85] Lee: Unless you think about it
[2582.85] Lee: You know you can get into big trouble
[2584.85] Lee: So I think you're right
[2585.85] Lee: I think that's absolutely what we do
[2587.85] Lee: Loads of people do it though right
[2589.85] Lee: Because we don't talk about it
[2591.85] Curry: I think if you buy a nice plane
[2594.85] Curry: And it's like big
[2595.85] Curry: And it's going to carry expensive stuff
[2596.85] Curry: Then you buy nice stuff for it
[2598.85] Curry: So bearing in mind
[2599.85] Curry: You can get a bit of foam board
[2600.85] Curry: And I can make this fly
[2601.85] Curry: With a couple of spare bits
[2602.85] Curry: I'm just going to put them on there
[2603.85] Curry: And see what happens
[2604.85] Curry: What it usually is
[2606.85] Frank: Is I've crashed a quad
[2607.85] Frank: And I only have
[2608.85] Frank: Three ESCs and three motors
[2610.85] Frank: But that's good for you know
[2611.85] Frank: Three wings
[2612.85] Frank: That's three planes
[2613.85] Lee: Yeah
[2618.85] Lee: Oh oh
[2619.85] Lee: VTOL
[2620.85] Lee: VTOL
[2621.85] Lee: Just to let you guys
[2622.85] Lee: I'm actually getting
[2623.85] Lee: A VTOL model shipped here
[2624.85] Lee: At a ready to fly VTOL
[2627.85] Lee: Because I want to basically
[2628.85] Lee: Have a look and figure out
[2629.85] Lee: How they've made it work
[2630.85] Lee: I think again
[2631.85] Lee: It's a holy bro thing
[2632.85] Lee: But it's my first ever VTOL plane
[2634.85] Lee: And VTOL experience
[2635.85] Lee: And I'm so excited about it
[2637.85] Lee: I've been trying to get into VTOL
[2640.85] Lee: I don't know
[2641.85] Lee: I don't know what you're talking about
[2647.85] Lee: Yeah
[2648.85] Lee: Do we want to switch?
[2649.85] Curry: What is the system on it Lee?
[2650.85] Curry: Is it a wing with big
[2652.85] Curry: Big moving surfaces
[2654.85] Curry: Or victory or what?
[2656.85] Lee: I think it is like a more conventional plane
[2659.85] Lee: With motors that are actually tilted
[2661.85] Lee: At the 45 degrees
[2662.85] Lee: It's a slightly weird one
[2664.85] Lee: But it's running
[2667.85] Lee: R2 pilot
[2668.85] Lee: So X plane stuff
[2670.85] Lee: Which is actually really good
[2671.85] Lee: For VTOL systems
[2672.85] Lee: Because personally
[2673.85] Lee: I want
[2675.85] Lee: The motors and props
[2676.85] Lee: To do both jobs
[2678.85] Lee: So I'm not dragging
[2679.85] Lee: A load of motors and props
[2680.85] Lee: Around when I'm flying
[2681.85] Lee: That I don't need
[2682.85] Lee: Because a load of people
[2683.85] Lee: You know will have like a big
[2684.85] Lee: Motor and prop at the back
[2685.85] Lee: To push it along
[2686.85] Lee: Or to pull it
[2687.85] Lee: In the plane configuration
[2688.85] Lee: And then four motors
[2690.85] Lee: That are just there to
[2691.85] Lee: You know to hold it in the air
[2693.85] Lee: For the quad stuff
[2694.85] Lee: So when you're flying
[2695.85] Lee: Your wing
[2696.85] Lee: Those four are just dead weight
[2698.85] Lee: And then when you're
[2700.85] Lee: When you transition
[2701.85] Lee: The motor
[2702.85] Lee: And it just doesn't make sense
[2703.85] Lee: I thought the way that Frank was doing it
[2705.85] Lee: Was really smart
[2706.85] Lee: Whether it kind of
[2707.85] Lee: It used the same motors and props
[2709.85] Lee: For both types of flight
[2711.85] Lee: And you can do that
[2712.85] Lee: But it just
[2713.85] Frank: Yeah
[2714.85] Frank: It definitely
[2715.85] Frank: It works
[2716.85] Frank: It's not as easy
[2718.85] Frank: But it does require me
[2720.85] Frank: To actually
[2722.85] Frank: Fly it at some point
[2723.85] Frank: Which I haven't yet done
[2725.85] Frank: I bought
[2727.85] Frank: A couple of weeks ago
[2729.85] Frank: I bought
[2731.85] Frank: Telemetry radio
[2732.85] Frank: To actually know what's going on with it
[2735.85] Frank: But yeah I need to just dig it out
[2737.85] Frank: And plug it in
[2738.85] Frank: And see what the GPS is like here
[2739.85] Frank: Because that was the problem
[2740.85] Frank: I was having before
[2741.85] Frank: Was I wasn't getting the GPS working
[2743.85] Frank: And I didn't
[2745.85] Frank: Well I have
[2747.85] Frank: I'm not comfortable with
[2748.85] Frank: The RG pilot thing of
[2750.85] Frank: Failsafing to
[2751.85] Frank: Flying around on GPS
[2753.85] Frank: And it just doesn't
[2754.85] Frank: It doesn't appeal to me at all
[2755.85] Frank: I would much rather it just die
[2758.85] Frank: In the kind of
[2759.85] Frank: INEV
[2761.85] Frank: At least B to flight
[2762.85] Frank: Clean flight kind of way of
[2764.85] Frank: If you lose control
[2765.85] Frank: Please, please stop flying
[2768.85] Frank: That's my preferred way
[2770.85] Lee: You say that until the first time
[2772.85] Lee: It actually saves your bacon
[2773.85] Lee: And then you kind of go
[2775.85] Lee: Okay I'm converted
[2777.85] Lee: I'll get the taxi with everything
[2779.85] Lee: You know I'm kind of there
[2780.85] Lee: But I used to be with you definitely
[2783.85] Lee: But the first time you actually get into trouble
[2785.85] Lee: And flip the return to home
[2786.85] Lee: Or you have an issue
[2787.85] Lee: And the radio whatever
[2788.85] Lee: And it just kind of you know
[2789.85] Lee: Gently sails into sight
[2791.85] Lee: Because the cool thing with things like
[2792.85] Lee: Ardu, pilot and X plane
[2795.85] Lee: Is that you can set it to do things like
[2797.85] Lee: Then descend
[2798.85] Lee: And you know land and disarm
[2800.85] Lee: It doesn't do what the B to flight stuff does
[2802.85] Lee: Which you know it's just basically a crash
[2804.85] Lee: That just happens to be closer to you
[2806.85] Lee: It actually does land it
[2807.85] Lee: It's really really smart stuff
[2809.85] Lee: There's someone in the comments saying it's
[2811.85] Lee: Andrew Newton was looking at a VTOL
[2814.85] Lee: Not sure Caroline to be honest
[2817.85] Lee: I haven't seen that
[2818.85] Lee: It's the one from Holy Bro I think
[2822.85] Curry: I'm pretty sure his wasn't Holy Bro
[2824.85] Curry: It was something that I hadn't heard of
[2826.85] Curry: Right okay
[2827.85] Lee: Yeah it's quite expensive
[2830.85] Lee: That's my only issue with it
[2831.85] Lee: It's like 7800 quid
[2832.85] Lee: I'm getting one as a loaner to play with
[2835.85] Lee: I'm not buying one
[2836.85] Lee: Well you heard it
[2839.85] Lee: It might be when he rings me
[2842.85] Lee: I'll be like I don't want to send it back
[2844.85] Lee: But I love it
[2845.85] Lee: I just want an idea
[2847.85] Lee: Well joking aside
[2850.85] Lee: So this is one of my friends who has a job
[2853.85] Lee: And he sent me the version
[2855.85] Lee: You know the FPV DJI system
[2858.85] Lee: With the version 2 goggles and the DJI quad
[2861.85] Lee: Oh crap that was
[2862.85] Lee: And 1200 quid or whatever it was
[2864.85] Lee: And he said oh I've got one in
[2866.85] Lee: I've opened it because I want to try it
[2868.85] Lee: If you want I'll ship it to you
[2869.85] Lee: And you can have a go
[2870.85] Lee: I was like oh yeah that would be really good
[2872.85] Lee: It would be good to have a play with it
[2873.85] Lee: And it arrived
[2874.85] Lee: And all I could think of
[2876.85] Lee: As I would do my little flight
[2878.85] Lee: You know the cash register noise
[2881.85] Lee: It was just going like that
[2882.85] Lee: Because I think if I break this
[2884.85] Lee: I am going to have to clean a lot of dishes
[2886.85] Lee: To make this up to this guy
[2888.85] Lee: This is going to you know
[2889.85] Lee: So it was
[2891.85] Lee: I mean the technology DJI
[2893.85] Lee: It works beautifully
[2894.85] Lee: It's dead easy to fly
[2895.85] Lee: You know it was
[2896.85] Lee: It was very very impressive
[2897.85] Lee: But it was just 1200 quid
[2900.85] Lee: Holy crap
[2901.85] Lee: Yeah if I even bend anything with this
[2903.85] Lee: Because it's not designed
[2904.85] Lee: So that you can just easily replace the arm
[2906.85] Lee: Like it's not a snap on unit or anything with DJI
[2908.85] Lee: You know it was like a
[2909.85] Lee: Well you've seen them haven't you
[2910.85] Lee: The number of
[2911.85] Lee: Have you seen how much stuff is on eBay
[2913.85] Lee: For that for the DJI FPV stuff
[2915.85] Lee: The individual components
[2917.85] Lee: Obviously people have just got it smashed into pieces
[2919.85] Lee: They've just been like
[2920.85] Lee: Let's go use this now
[2922.85] Frank: Especially with the price of the spare parts
[2924.85] Frank: You know even fairly directly from DJI for that stuff
[2928.85] Frank: It's just crazy money for anything
[2931.85] Frank: 40 quid for a new camera
[2937.85] Lee: The camera
[2938.85] Lee: The goggles
[2939.85] Lee: I must admit are a big improvement
[2941.85] Lee: In terms of the on screen display
[2942.85] Lee: Of the version 1
[2943.85] Lee: You know it's got colour
[2944.85] Lee: And it looks
[2945.85] Lee: It's really pretty
[2946.85] Lee: But it's like yeah
[2947.85] Lee: 1200 quid
[2948.85] Lee: Holy hell
[2950.85] Lee: Yeah it was a weird way
[2951.85] Lee: It was
[2952.85] Lee: I was so unimpressed
[2954.85] Lee: I thought I'm not even going to make a video about that
[2956.85] Lee: Because all it's going to do is
[2957.85] Lee: I'm just going to be ranting
[2958.85] Lee: Kind of like I am now
[2960.85] Lee: But for like a 30 minute video
[2961.85] Lee: Going
[2962.85] Lee: This is not what the hobby is about for me
[2964.85] Lee: But some people love it
[2966.85] Frank: We've been
[2967.85] Frank: We've been having this
[2969.85] Frank: Heated debate
[2970.85] Frank: On the Discord lately
[2971.85] Frank: Of
[2972.85] Frank: Is it terrible
[2974.85] Frank: Is it
[2975.85] Frank: A complete perversion of the entire hobby
[2979.85] Frank: Or is it
[2980.85] Frank: In my view
[2981.85] Frank: Just a completely different thing
[2983.85] Frank: That just happens to
[2984.85] Frank: Have the same acronym in its title
[2987.85] Frank: For me
[2989.85] Frank: In the same way that
[2991.85] Frank: A road bike
[2993.85] Frank: And a dirt bike
[2994.85] Frank: And a mountain bike
[2995.85] Frank: All have the word bike in them
[2997.85] Frank: In an FPV quid
[2999.85] Frank: And a DJI FPV quid
[3000.85] Frank: Both have FPV quid in them
[3003.85] Frank: But they're for different purposes
[3006.85] Frank: For different people doing different things
[3008.85] Frank: With different budgets
[3009.85] Frank: And different
[3011.85] Frank: Availability of time
[3013.85] Frank: And skill levels
[3014.85] Frank: And yeah
[3015.85] Frank: It's just
[3016.85] Frank: You're looking to do different things with it
[3018.85] Frank: You know
[3019.85] Frank: If you're just looking for kind of
[3022.85] Frank: Some fairly swoopy footage
[3025.85] Frank: Then I think
[3027.85] Frank: The DJI FPV quid is
[3029.85] Frank: It's not a bad way to go
[3032.85] Frank: But don't expect it to be
[3036.85] Lee: Survivor crash
[3037.85] Frank: Yeah survivor crash
[3038.85] Frank: Don't expect it to be like training wheels
[3041.85] Frank: For flying like a normal FPV quid really
[3046.85] Frank: I don't expect it to be as easy to mod
[3050.85] Frank: Or maintain or do anything with
[3053.85] Frank: But it's just
[3054.85] Frank: It's a different choice
[3055.85] Frank: It's a
[3056.85] Frank: Mavic with some racing stripes on it
[3059.85] Frank: It's not
[3060.85] Frank: That's exactly what it is
[3062.85] Lee: And a spoiler on the back
[3063.85] Lee: But in terms of the design
[3065.85] Lee: The design is terrible
[3067.85] Lee: The whole thing about when you land
[3069.85] Lee: The battery can get caught
[3070.85] Lee: And how it's laid out
[3071.85] Lee: And some very expensive parts
[3074.85] Lee: Are in very vulnerable places
[3076.85] Lee: And I just think
[3078.85] Lee: DJI with all the money that they have
[3080.85] Lee: They could have come out with something
[3081.85] Lee: That was really innovative and groundbreaking
[3083.85] Lee: With kind of the snap on arms
[3085.85] Lee: And things like that that could have made it
[3088.85] Lee: If you did fly it a little bit more aggressively
[3091.85] Lee: And had a little bit of an accident
[3093.85] Lee: A disagreement with a tree or a piece of ground
[3095.85] Lee: Then you know
[3097.85] Lee: You didn't have to take the whole thing apart
[3099.85] Lee: Or reach for soldering iron
[3101.85] Lee: And just
[3103.85] Lee: Yeah anyway
[3105.85] Jack: Did you turn any of this stuff off?
[3108.85] Jack: I did
[3109.85] Lee: And it was
[3110.85] Lee: It's just too heavy
[3111.85] Lee: Terrifying
[3112.85] Lee: It was horrible
[3115.85] Lee: No no
[3116.85] Lee: It weighs so much
[3117.85] Lee: I mean you know
[3118.85] Lee: If you threw it at somebody's head
[3119.85] Lee: You could probably kill them
[3121.85] Lee: It was like a house brick
[3122.85] Lee: It was ridiculous
[3123.85] Lee: Curry
[3124.85] Jack: Did you
[3125.85] Jack: Did you review flying?
[3126.85] Curry: Yeah I flew last Friday
[3129.85] Curry: I was testing out
[3131.85] Curry: A VTX with ridiculous power
[3134.85] Curry: I got the Rush FPV solo tank
[3138.85] Frank: 25.0 milliwatts yes
[3141.85] Frank: Yes
[3142.85] Curry: 25 milliwatts
[3143.85] Curry: Up to
[3145.85] Curry: 1.6 watts
[3147.85] Curry: Not that I would do that
[3149.85] Curry: Of course
[3150.85] Curry: All my videos are simulated
[3152.85] Curry: But yeah
[3153.85] Curry: Surprisingly
[3154.85] Curry: It didn't overheat
[3155.85] Curry: In a massive lamp of fire
[3156.85] Curry: Which surprised me most
[3158.85] Curry: That's because mostly
[3159.85] Curry: It is a heat sink
[3161.85] Curry: With a projectile
[3162.85] Curry: And power constructed in it
[3163.85] Curry: So it stayed completely cool
[3164.85] Curry: I was quite impressed with it
[3165.85] Curry: Because I like
[3166.85] Curry: I really do like the
[3168.85] Curry: The Rush FPV stuff
[3169.85] Curry: Jack if you put one of those on your
[3171.85] Curry: On your
[3172.85] Curry: Whatever you're building
[3173.85] Curry: It won't have lines
[3174.85] Curry: All over it
[3175.85] Curry: That's the thing
[3176.85] Jack: Yeah
[3177.85] Frank: But neither will anyone else
[3178.85] Frank: Is within a 5 mile radius
[3180.85] Frank: Because they'll all just
[3181.85] Frank: Have your image
[3182.85] Curry: Yeah
[3183.85] Curry: That's the good thing
[3185.85] Curry: See I thought I was flying it
[3186.85] Curry: At 200 milliwatts
[3187.85] Curry: Because I set the power to 2
[3188.85] Curry: And that was 400 milliwatts
[3189.85] Curry: It goes 25, 400, 800, 1.6
[3191.85] Curry: It's
[3192.85] Curry: It's
[3193.85] Curry: It's
[3194.85] Curry: It's slightly crazy
[3197.85] Curry: Surprisingly
[3198.85] Curry: I wasn't able to
[3199.85] Curry: Outfly the range
[3200.85] Curry: On
[3201.85] Curry: On anything
[3202.85] Curry: Because
[3203.85] Curry: Because I hit the C
[3204.85] Curry: And I thought
[3205.85] Curry: I'm going to have to turn around
[3206.85] UNKNOWN: And come back now
[3207.85] Frank: We've run out of England
[3208.85] Curry: I have
[3209.85] Frank: I have identified
[3210.85] Frank: Near me
[3212.85] Frank: A set of fields
[3214.85] Frank: That I can
[3216.85] Frank: That all have public access to them
[3218.85] Frank: And have no roads in between them
[3221.85] Frank: And you can go over a mile
[3223.85] Frank: Just over fields
[3224.85] Frank: That are all accessible
[3225.85] Frank: Without any kind of
[3227.85] Frank: People nearby
[3228.85] Frank: And
[3229.85] Frank: Green laners use it
[3230.85] Frank: So it's like there's no worries about
[3232.85] Frank: Bothering people with noise
[3233.85] Frank: Because it's like
[3235.85] Frank: Motorbikes with their
[3237.85] Frank: Mufflers taken off so
[3239.85] Frank: You know
[3240.85] Frank: I don't think we'll get some complaints
[3242.85] Frank: So I've
[3243.85] Frank: I've got that riding it
[3244.85] Frank: I'm eyeing up that
[3245.85] Frank: As somewhere to fly something
[3247.85] Frank: That's good
[3248.85] Curry: Although I did have a comment in my video
[3249.85] Curry: Saying someone got to 6.25 miles with it
[3253.85] Curry: But they were worried about running out of battery
[3255.85] Curry: Because they were using a
[3256.85] Curry: 4 inch long range quad
[3257.85] Curry: And I thought
[3258.85] Curry: The fact he's got it that far
[3260.85] Curry: Doesn't impress me on the range
[3261.85] Curry: It just does impress me
[3262.85] Curry: That he can keep a quad in the air
[3263.85] Curry: And get it back again
[3264.85] Curry: He said he managed to get it flying
[3266.85] Curry: For 24 minutes somehow
[3268.85] Curry: Which is slightly crazy
[3270.85] Curry: But he still can't get to the end of the range
[3272.85] Curry: You'd have to put it in a big old plane
[3274.85] Curry: And just leave it flying for an hour
[3276.85] Curry: And see what happens
[3278.85] Lee: Someone will do it
[3279.85] Lee: And they'll probably put it on YouTube
[3281.85] Lee: I expect so
[3282.85] Lee: I expect so
[3283.85] Lee: Shady was asking
[3284.85] Lee: What was the TBS carbon quad
[3286.85] Lee: Where all the components were plugged in
[3287.85] Lee: Was it the Vendetta?
[3288.85] Lee: Yes it was Shady it was
[3290.85] Lee: I thought it was a really nice idea
[3293.85] Lee: But I didn't fly mine
[3294.85] Lee: Because I was really worried
[3295.85] Lee: Because it was all carbon fiber
[3297.85] Lee: It's a beautiful thing
[3298.85] Lee: But if you crashed it
[3299.85] Lee: It would have just disintegrated
[3301.85] Lee: You'd have carbon fiber chips everywhere
[3304.85] Lee: You'd have never got it back together
[3306.85] Jack: Didn't you have to buy the motors on the arm
[3309.85] Jack: Like a boomerang?
[3311.85] Lee: Yeah that was it
[3312.85] Lee: Yeah there were like
[3313.85] Jack: Boomerang packs
[3314.85] Lee: That was it
[3315.85] Lee: Like a boomerang pack
[3316.85] Lee: The arms kind of stepped in
[3318.85] Lee: And it was all kind of
[3319.85] Lee: All connectors
[3320.85] Lee: The connectors was like
[3321.85] Lee: A three pronged X-T60
[3324.85] Lee: The weren't they
[3325.85] Lee: They had the first place
[3326.85] Lee: I'd ever seen them
[3328.85] Lee: The M-T60s is that what they're called?
[3330.85] Lee: Wow yeah it is
[3332.85] Lee: Well done Frank
[3333.85] Lee: That's pretty impressive
[3334.85] Lee: Where'd you pull that from?
[3335.85] Frank: Hanging around with Tony
[3336.85] Frank: And the X-Class
[3338.85] Jack: X-Class boys yeah
[3340.85] Jack: He's making up for it
[3341.85] Jack: For me saying that
[3342.85] Jack: The way he does over T-X is wrong
[3346.85] Jack: It's not wrong
[3347.85] Lee: It's not wrong
[3348.85] Lee: It's a completely
[3349.85] Lee: It's a valid way to do it Jack
[3350.85] Lee: I'm sorry
[3352.85] Jack: Have we covered anything in your list by the way?
[3356.85] Jack: Have we done one?
[3357.85] Lee: We've done the Atom RC Dolphin
[3359.85] Lee: We've talked about VTOL
[3361.85] Lee: And that was about it
[3366.85] Jack: Did you enjoy the Right to Repair episode
[3369.85] Jack: Or have you stopped listening to Letro now?
[3371.85] Lee: No I did
[3372.85] Lee: I did watch it after we had a chat
[3373.85] Lee: I liked that
[3374.85] Lee: Some people were talking about
[3377.85] Lee: In the comments actually
[3379.85] Lee: See if I can go back up a little bit
[3381.85] Lee: About how DJI want to make it
[3383.85] Lee: So you send it back to them
[3384.85] Lee: To get things fixed
[3386.85] Lee: Robby and FPV here it is
[3387.85] Lee: One of the Spectrum Painters 360
[3389.85] Lee: With his soldier in iron
[3390.85] Lee: And his hot glue gun
[3392.85] Lee: He didn't write that
[3393.85] Lee: I just added that
[3394.85] Lee: Is it supposed to end up
[3395.85] Lee: Needing to be repaired by DJI
[3399.85] Lee: Yeah I thought that
[3400.85] Lee: Kind of all ties into the same thing
[3402.85] Lee: Because I think it's a really interesting topic
[3405.85] Lee: Because the less
[3406.85] Lee: Of the kind of home brew stuff
[3408.85] Lee: That we do as the hobby
[3409.85] Lee: And the more kind of proprietary
[3411.85] Lee: All-in-one closed system stuff we get into
[3413.85] Lee: The more we start to wander into that area
[3416.85] Lee: Where we need to think about that stuff actually
[3418.85] Lee: Yeah
[3419.85] Lee: You know if you have a VTX that blows up
[3421.85] Lee: And you buy the same VTX
[3422.85] Lee: And you solder it in to your model
[3424.85] Lee: And then it doesn't work
[3426.85] Lee: Where does that leave you?
[3428.85] Lee: Are you allowed to do that?
[3429.85] Lee: Does that vise your warranty?
[3431.85] Lee: Is it on the manufacturer that can do that?
[3433.85] Lee: I thought yeah
[3434.85] Lee: It's an interesting one
[3435.85] Lee: I mean I'm not a fan of the whole proprietary thing anyway
[3439.85] Lee: Because I like messing about
[3441.85] Lee: And I know lots of pilots
[3442.85] Lee: Don't like that part of the hobby
[3444.85] Lee: They just want to go out and fly
[3446.85] Lee: You know I have a couple of friends
[3447.85] Lee: Who would quite happily just you know
[3449.85] Lee: Kind of just
[3450.85] Lee: You set it up Lee
[3451.85] Lee: And just give it me
[3452.85] Lee: And I'll fly it
[3453.85] Lee: Okay
[3455.85] Lee: But I think that
[3457.85] Lee: There is danger
[3458.85] Lee: Abstracting it to the point where
[3460.85] Lee: You know it's like your car these days
[3462.85] Lee: You know about when I was a kid
[3463.85] Lee: Used to spend the weekend under it
[3465.85] Lee: With you know spanners and things
[3467.85] Lee: Trying to make sure it was going to start
[3468.85] Lee: On Monday morning to get it to work
[3469.85] Lee: There's no chance in how you can do that
[3471.85] Lee: With a modern car
[3472.85] Lee: You know you need a computer degree
[3474.85] Lee: And all kinds of things
[3476.85] Lee: To even look at what's going on
[3477.85] Lee: Back in the old day
[3478.85] Lee: You could see if the wire had fell off
[3479.85] Lee: It's probably going to be something to do with that
[3481.85] Lee: These days
[3482.85] Lee: You know you have to have all your codes
[3484.85] Lee: And then clear your codes
[3485.85] Lee: So it'll even start
[3487.85] Jack: I know
[3488.85] Jack: And you've got stuff like
[3491.85] Jack: Elon Musk like you know
[3493.85] Jack: Switching off rapid charging
[3496.85] Jack: Yeah
[3497.85] Jack: Out a warranty
[3498.85] Jack: Or if they don't like what you've been up to
[3500.85] Jack: And basically the whole idea of that episode was
[3505.85] Jack: We fly stuff that we're going to crash
[3508.85] Jack: We're going to need spare parts
[3510.85] Jack: And the fact is that they're not
[3513.85] Jack: They're not supplied for long enough
[3515.85] Jack: Or there's you know
[3517.85] Jack: Like for instance the T-motor motors
[3519.85] Jack: They have iterations
[3522.85] Jack: You know like
[3523.85] Jack: We're on iteration 4
[3526.85] Jack: So you can buy the 60s
[3528.85] Jack: V1, V2, V3, V4
[3532.85] Jack: And they're not compatible
[3534.85] Jack: With each other at all
[3536.85] Jack: And you know
[3538.85] Jack: And like with DJI and flight controllers
[3541.85] Jack: Say like you've got a KISS flight controller
[3543.85] Jack: If you've got the fancy pants PDB
[3546.85] Jack: Where you've got the
[3548.85] Jack: Using the serial ports
[3550.85] Jack: Plugs in and stuff
[3551.85] Jack: You can kind of like fully test it
[3553.85] Jack: But if you're not
[3554.85] Jack: And you use the solder pads
[3556.85] Jack: Remember the number one thing
[3558.85] Jack: That Lee Painter360 used to teach us
[3560.85] Jack: Plug it in first
[3561.85] Jack: And see if it works
[3563.85] Jack: Before you solder it
[3565.85] Jack: Before you solder it
[3566.85] Jack: Yeah exactly
[3567.85] Jack: I've got that tattooed on me somewhere
[3570.85] Jack: In my mind
[3573.85] Lee: It was an interesting one last week actually
[3577.85] Lee: I wish I'd have been around
[3578.85] Lee: Because I'd have probably jumped on for that one
[3580.85] Lee: Because I think it is a really
[3582.85] Lee: It's an interesting topic
[3583.85] Lee: And one we're going to bump into more
[3585.85] Lee: Because you know
[3586.85] Lee: Even with things like Fat Shark goggles
[3588.85] Lee: I mean Fat Shark have an amazing warranty
[3590.85] Lee: We're talking about analog
[3591.85] Lee: All the DJI guys are just like
[3593.85] Lee: Well the Fat Shark goggles
[3595.85] Lee: You know
[3596.85] Lee: If you open them up
[3597.85] Lee: And you play with them
[3598.85] Lee: And you screw it up
[3599.85] Lee: Fat Shark
[3600.85] Lee: You can still send them back
[3601.85] Lee: And they'll probably still fix them for you
[3602.85] Lee: And they'll probably still do it for free
[3604.85] Lee: You know
[3605.85] Lee: I mean I've got one of my Fat Sharks
[3607.85] Lee: The fans started making a noise
[3610.85] Lee: And I didn't have any
[3611.85] Lee: No issue at all
[3612.85] Lee: Kind of taking the fan shroud off
[3614.85] Lee: And having a look
[3615.85] Lee: Because it might be that there was
[3616.85] Lee: You know
[3617.85] Lee: A bug's got in there
[3618.85] Lee: Or it might be that
[3619.85] Lee: With it being in the case
[3620.85] Lee: The little shroud that goes around it
[3621.85] Lee: Is slightly out around
[3622.85] Lee: And it's catching one of the blades
[3624.85] Lee: No problem at all
[3625.85] Lee: Oil pressure bearing
[3626.85] Lee: It could be oil pressure bearing
[3627.85] Lee: It could be
[3628.85] Lee: You know
[3629.85] Lee: The beak
[3630.85] Lee: The piston rings
[3631.85] Lee: Whatever
[3632.85] Lee: I had no issue with that
[3633.85] Lee: Because I know if
[3634.85] Lee: If I need
[3635.85] Lee: If I need to get it fixed
[3636.85] Lee: I can just raise a ticket
[3637.85] Lee: But it's quite
[3639.85] Lee: You know
[3640.85] Lee: Even doing things like
[3641.85] Lee: Ticking my goggles apart
[3642.85] Lee: To put things like the head tracker in
[3644.85] Lee: You know
[3645.85] Lee: It's kind of like
[3646.85] Lee: I feel reasonably comfortable with that
[3648.85] Lee: I probably wouldn't when I first got them
[3651.85] Lee: Because I know that if I break them
[3653.85] Lee: I've got someone that
[3654.85] Lee: You know
[3655.85] Lee: A manufacturer that will back me up
[3656.85] Lee: Rather than tell me
[3657.85] Lee: Well that's
[3658.85] Lee: You broke it
[3659.85] Lee: Excuse my French
[3660.85] Lee: You know
[3661.85] Lee: The new set's 450 pounds
[3664.85] Lee: But you have to wait three weeks
[3666.85] Lee: Because we haven't got any
[3669.85] Lee: So yeah
[3670.85] Lee: I'm going to watch that with interest
[3672.85] Lee: So thank you for bringing that up Jack actually
[3674.85] Lee: Because I thought that was an interesting one
[3675.85] Lee: That one
[3676.85] Jack: Yeah no
[3677.85] Jack: No worries
[3678.85] Jack: So if there's any
[3679.85] Lee: If there's any questions then
[3680.85] Lee: There is questions
[3681.85] Lee: Have we got questions?
[3682.85] Jack: Yeah
[3683.85] Jack: Fraser Steen asks
[3684.85] Jack: What about the best night flying plane?
[3688.85] Jack: What were lights on?
[3689.85] Lee: Depends what you're really after
[3691.85] Lee: But the
[3692.85] Lee: One of the ones that we really enjoyed
[3694.85] Lee: Me and my mates is something called the night walrus
[3696.85] Lee: I'm not sure if they do it anymore
[3697.85] Lee: It was like
[3698.85] Lee: A walrus with loads of LEDs embedded in it
[3701.85] Lee: Hobbyking did it
[3702.85] Lee: Beautiful flyer
[3703.85] Lee: You can kind of saw it about
[3705.85] Lee: And it just
[3706.85] Lee: It does look like a UFO
[3707.85] Lee: But actually putting LEDs inside
[3710.85] Lee: You know like a white
[3712.85] Lee: Model like
[3713.85] Lee: The plane behind me
[3715.85] Lee: Actually isn't too difficult
[3717.85] Lee: You can put a couple of strips in
[3719.85] Lee: There are some on here but you can't see them
[3721.85] Curry: Because of this
[3722.85] Curry: Yeah
[3723.85] Lee: But it depends what you want
[3725.85] Lee: It's pretty easy to
[3726.85] Lee: If you're building a wing
[3727.85] Lee: Stick it in inside a wing as well
[3729.85] Lee: But no the night walrus is probably the one that springs to mind
[3731.85] Lee: There's also the
[3733.85] Lee: There was an orbit neon
[3734.85] Lee: Which was like a wing that
[3736.85] Lee: ZOD did
[3737.85] Lee: But it's a very tame wing
[3739.85] Lee: It's only
[3740.85] Lee: Nice if you just want to float around
[3742.85] Lee: If you want to fly it like you stole it
[3743.85] Lee: It's not good at that
[3745.85] Frank: Just a thought with your canards
[3747.85] Frank: Are they actually like
[3749.85] Frank: Actuated
[3750.85] Frank: They're not articulated no
[3752.85] Frank: That starts on my list at some point
[3754.85] Frank: Well yet
[3755.85] Lee: Yes
[3758.85] Lee: But if it means I can do faster turns for FPV combat
[3761.85] Lee: You never know
[3763.85] Lee: Yeah
[3764.85] Lee: And flaps
[3766.85] Frank: Do you
[3767.85] Frank: Like
[3768.85] Frank: Harry a viffing
[3769.85] Frank: And just
[3770.85] Frank: Full flap
[3772.85] Frank: Do the
[3773.85] Lee: Do the
[3774.85] Lee: The maverick top gun manoeuvre
[3776.85] Lee: And just your
[3777.85] Jack: Hither brakes
[3779.85] Jack: I'm waiting for some
[3780.85] Jack: Duckarons
[3781.85] Jack: Or whatever they're called
[3782.85] Jack: You know the
[3783.85] Frank: What
[3784.85] Frank: Oh it's
[3785.85] Frank: The kind of
[3786.85] Frank: Yeah
[3788.85] Frank: Clamshell
[3790.85] Frank: Spoiler things
[3791.85] Frank: Where you get
[3792.85] Frank: Yeah
[3793.85] Frank: The split
[3794.85] Frank: Your flaperons split open
[3796.85] Frank: So that you have kind of drag on that side
[3798.85] Frank: So you have your
[3800.85] Jack: I'm waiting for the day that Lee
[3803.85] Jack: I was speaking of which
[3805.85] Jack: I rang the back in 2015
[3807.85] Jack: If you wanted any technical help
[3809.85] Jack: With a Taranis
[3811.85] Jack: It was Lee's channel
[3813.85] Jack: Or CPO
[3814.85] Jack: If you remember him
[3816.85] Jack: Everything CPO
[3817.85] Jack: Like oh my word
[3818.85] Jack: Have you seen the mud
[3819.85] Jack: Our
[3820.85] Jack: Mold
[3821.85] Jack: LED controller
[3822.85] Jack: Has anyone seen any of that?
[3823.85] Jack: No
[3824.85] Jack: That sounds like
[3825.85] Jack: What is it?
[3826.85] Jack: So yeah
[3827.85] Jack: Let's have a
[3828.85] Jack: Let's have a quick Google
[3829.85] Jack: Hang on
[3831.85] Jack: I know, I know
[3832.85] Jack: I just wondered if any of you had
[3836.85] Jack: Search for Google
[3838.85] Frank: Is that like
[3842.85] Frank: The one
[3845.85] Frank: Who was it?
[3846.85] Frank: There was an LED controller
[3847.85] Frank: That was released
[3849.85] Frank: Quite a few years ago
[3852.85] Frank: Some of the racers got together
[3854.85] Frank: And put it together
[3855.85] Jack: Is this it?
[3857.85] Jack: Hang on
[3859.85] Jack: This is going to be a nightmare
[3860.85] Jack: For anyone listening
[3861.85] Jack: It looks like a little
[3862.85] Jack: Bluetooth module
[3864.85] Jack: Is this right?
[3865.85] Jack: It's like an ESP32
[3866.85] Jack: Or something isn't it?
[3867.85] Jack: Yeah, shout out to
[3868.85] Jack: Aloft Hobbies
[3869.85] Jack: By the way
[3870.85] Jack: It's a nice
[3871.85] Frank: Sponsored tonight's show
[3876.85] Frank: Is it literally just
[3877.85] Frank: A breakout board
[3878.85] Frank: For an ESP32
[3879.85] Frank: That's got
[3884.85] Frank: Just for
[3885.85] Frank: Plugging some LEDs into it
[3887.85] Lee: Is that the other one?
[3888.85] Lee: Yeah, it looks like it's got
[3889.85] Lee: WS-2012 LEDs that connect to it
[3892.85] Lee: And it looks like
[3893.85] Lee: The Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
[3894.85] Lee: Connection to something
[3897.85] Jack: Right, guys
[3898.85] Jack: Let's call it there
[3899.85] Jack: Don't forget
[3900.85] Jack: Next week is our 300 episode
[3902.85] Jack: Which I need to talk to
[3903.85] Jack: Lee about
[3905.85] Jack: That we definitely have
[3906.85] Jack: A plan for
[3907.85] Jack: And we are very
[3908.85] Jack: Looking forward to
[3911.85] Jack: Right
[3912.85] Jack: You've been listening to
[3913.85] Jack: Let's Throw Now

[3946.85] Jack: Really see
[3947.85] Jack: Bear
[3948.85] Jack: Is it like
[3949.85] Jack: Big Bear
[3950.85] Jack: Or something?
[3951.85] Jack: I can't remember
[3952.85] Jack: Wacky Wes is here
[3953.85] Jack: Shiny video stuff
[3954.85] Jack: Thank you, guys
[3955.85] Jack: So much for tuning in
[3956.85] Jack: Thanks to all our
[3957.85] Jack: Patreons

[3959.85] Jack: On the road
[3960.85] Jack: And making Frank's
[3961.85] Jack: Life easier
[3962.85] Jack: Now that, you know
[3963.85] Jack: America's taken
[3964.85] Jack: Everything that we make
[3966.85] Jack: On any episode
[3967.85] Jack: Don't throw now
[3971.85] Jack: Yeah, anyway
[3972.85] Jack: Thank you, guys
[3973.85] Jack: You've been joined by

[3982.85] Jack: Painters C60
[3984.85] Lee: Happy Fly
[3986.85] Jack: And I'll be bright
[3987.85] Jack: Until I fly
[3988.85] Jack: Thank you, guys
[3989.85] Jack: Have a good night
[3990.85] Frank: Bye
[3992.85] Curry: Telemetry lost
