[639.72] Paweł: Six years later, it's still contagious and it's all I know.

[647.72] Jack: There were some real dark days where it was just me and Tony for a while.
[651.72] hydra: There's been a few other FPV related podcasts that have been and gone, isn't there?

[659.72] hydra: I don't know what's happened to those guys now, but they're not doing anymore, are they?
[664.72] Frank: I think we can all attest that the thing is that putting together a good FPV drone podcast takes a lot of effort.
[674.72] Frank: Our secret to success is not putting in any effort.
[678.72] Curry: That's my old podcast, it's not a good one. It's just advising.
[683.72] Paweł: Just get around all your expectations and then everybody does.

[689.72] Frank: Well, we did always want it as just a group of guys and girls sitting in a pub chatting.
[695.72] Frank: That was how we wanted the podcast to come across.
[698.72] Frank: I think you certainly achieved that.
[702.72] Jack: It's a way of catching up and being like, have you been out flying? What's happening? What have you been working on?
[708.72] hydra: I went flying the other day, actually. It was quite nice.
[712.72] hydra: What with the hospital thing, I've not really been doing much, but I figured it's not very strenuous standing outside and flying.
[721.72] hydra: Then it was a nice day and I had a good reason to.
[725.72] hydra: I put in about 11 packs or so the other day. It was pretty nice.
[729.72] Jack: The last time I saw you fly, you were flipping a TBS discovery.
[737.72] Jack: It's disco.
[738.72] Jack: Yeah, that was the last video I ever saw. He was like, acroing.
[743.72] Jack: Yeah, they were all good for acro. Discos are.
[746.72] Frank: That's what everybody expects.
[750.72] Frank: Well known for their videos.
[753.72] hydra: Oh, yeah.
[756.72] hydra: It's brilliant.
[760.1] Lee: Yeah, it's a lot easier these days in it, Dom, than it used to be.
[764.1] Lee: You know, on board, on screen displays, honestly, some pilots don't know that they're born these days.

[773.1] Lee: It is today, honestly. In our day, half a lump of freezing cold, clean flight and we were happy.

[782.1] Lee: Serious question, Dom. The whole clean flight thing.
[785.1] Lee: Has that kind of stopped as a project?
[789.1] Lee: Because I know for a while you were kind of tinkering away in the background and doing support to your wakeboards.
[795.1] hydra: The problem is basically a time thing, really, to be honest.
[799.1] hydra: I don't have too much time and the developers are elsewhere these days.
[804.1] hydra: Right.
[805.1] hydra: There's been lots of people contact me about not wanting to do stuff for B2Flight anymore and wanting to bring clean flight back.
[813.1] hydra: But there's various different reasons why that hasn't happened.
[818.1] hydra: Mainly, it takes a lot of time to be a maintainer.
[822.1] hydra: And with the amount of users that there are, it can be quite stressful as well, maintaining a project.
[830.1] hydra: And to be honest, these days, I'd rather be creating stuff and coding stuff than maintaining a project.
[836.1] hydra: So if there was someone else that wanted to pick it up and run with it and then I could contribute to it, that would be fine.
[841.1] Paweł: It just depends on your attribution or the attribution.
[846.1] Paweł: Attitude towards everyone.
[848.1] Paweł: Okay, no, we will not do it. Close.
[853.1] hydra: There can be a lot of that.
[855.1] hydra: I mean, one of the problems with the early days, the code wasn't up to the quality standard that I wanted.
[861.1] hydra: And explaining to someone why it's not up to the quality standard that I want is very time consuming because they don't understand some of the principles behind software development and software engineering.
[874.1] hydra: So you end up being a teacher as well as being a maintainer and there's twice as much effort to do it.
[880.1] Lee: The teacher and the boring grown-up that has to explain why you can't just ride roughshod over the code.
[887.1] hydra: Exactly. So it's very time consuming.
[890.1] hydra: So you've got to really want to do it.
[891.1] hydra: And I've done it already before, so I'll let someone else do it for now.
[895.1] hydra: So it's fine.
[896.1] Lee: So clean flight at the moment then is kind of kaput for now.
[901.1] Lee: Yeah.
[902.1] Lee: That's a live project.
[903.1] hydra: Yeah, pretty much.
[906.1] hydra: But all this code lives on.
[908.1] hydra: So that's what that's what counts.
[909.1] hydra: I mean, it's it's a total and you know, total success because the idea behind the project was to get other developers to contribute without treading on each other's toes all the time by decoupling all the code and separating out cleaning it up.
[924.1] hydra: And that happened basically.
[926.1] hydra: And it was it's been a roaring success.
[928.1] hydra: Like when you create a pull request these days, you very rarely run into merge conflicts when you time merge stuff back in.
[936.1] hydra: It's really good in that regard.
[938.1] Lee: So yeah, I don't think people understand how much effort it took to turn.
[945.1] hydra: There was a lot.
[946.1] Lee: Yeah.
[947.1] Lee: I don't use the words hot mess, but I'm going to.
[949.1] Lee: That was the base flight code, which actually worked, but was so based in the Arduino stuff that it came from.
[955.1] Lee: But you essentially had to had to kind of put that through a meat grinder and turn it into modern, maintainable code.

[964.1] Lee: Yeah.
[965.1] Lee: But it still works in exactly the same way as it did before.
[968.1] Lee: So for the end user, there was absolutely no benefit.

[974.1] Paweł: How much of the multi we actually survived in derivatives.
[980.1] Paweł: It's like you just go somewhere and think about why.

[1157.1] hydra: So I've been doing a bunch of testing with Express LRS and my new flight controller and
[1161.1] hydra: I got the ghost module plugged it in.
[1163.1] hydra: Flashed Express LRS to it.
[1165.1] hydra: It went into the Express LRS loo and it just sits there going connecting.
[1168.1] hydra: I'm like.
[1171.1] hydra: What have I done wrong?
[1172.1] hydra: It's like, have I flashed the right thing?
[1174.1] hydra: Yes.
[1175.1] hydra: Is everything correct?
[1176.1] hydra: Everything was perfect.
[1177.1] hydra: I'm like, I've not done anything wrong.
[1178.1] hydra: But it doesn't work.
[1179.1] hydra: Why doesn't it work?
[1180.1] hydra: Oh, all right.
[1181.1] hydra: And let's get the oscilloscope out, which pins the S bus port.
[1185.1] hydra: And then I'm looking at this thing.
[1186.1] hydra: I'm looking at the edges.
[1187.1] hydra: And on a scope, the signals are basically supposed to go for a digital signal.
[1192.1] hydra: They're supposed to go along, up, like really quickly.
[1195.1] hydra: And then across and then down really quickly with nice sharp transitions.
[1199.1] hydra: On the FIR Sky signal, it goes.
[1203.1] hydra: What?
[1205.1] hydra: Is that leading?
[1207.1] hydra: Yeah.
[1208.1] hydra: So the leading edge transition is terrible.
[1213.1] hydra: So what some people have done with the Crossfire guys, the TBS guys, they suggested to people
[1220.1] hydra: they've got these transmitters with this problem, which includes the Jumper 1 because
[1224.1] hydra: they're based on the same schematic as the FIR Sky stuff, the X9D and the QX7 and probably
[1230.1] hydra: some other ones as well.
[1231.1] hydra: I think the Horace probably too.
[1234.1] hydra: They all have this problem.
[1235.1] hydra: And their solution was to replace the inverter.
[1239.1] hydra: But I don't know why they didn't tinker about with the software a little bit more because
[1244.1] hydra: I came up with a solution that changes the sampling mode.
[1246.1] hydra: So it basically just samples it a bit later after leading edge transitions have already
[1251.1] hydra: passed in time.
[1252.1] hydra: And then you read it like at a later point in time instead of an earlier point in time.
[1258.1] hydra: And then that fixed the problem.
[1259.1] hydra: So even with someone who's done the TBS suggestion of replacing the inverter, you still get
[1266.1] hydra: errors except that OpenTX doesn't actually show you any errors that are occurring between
[1272.1] hydra: the TX module and the transmitter.
[1275.1] hydra: So they're just completely hidden from the user.
[1277.1] hydra: So even if you've done it, you might still be getting some packet loss between the two,
[1281.1] hydra: which is quite entertaining as well.
