[139.46] Frank: Me, Jack and Tony and Danny went out and flew on the bank holiday a couple of weeks ago.
[151.46] Frank: So we went out to a field in the middle of nowhere out near Ditchling Beacon.
[160.46] Frank: And what did we all fly?
[164.46] Frank: I mean, I flew like a pack before my quad decided it didn't want.
[171.46] Frank: Well, I thought initially it was the quad who decided, no, I'm not going to listen to anything anymore.
[179.46] Frank: I'll turn on them.
[180.46] Frank: That's it.
[182.46] Frank: And then we plugged it into the because Jack obviously comes prepared.
[187.46] Frank: He had his laptop and we plugged that into the configurator and looked at the receiver tab and there was nothing there.
[195.46] Frank: So we checked the radio.
[198.46] Frank: The radio said it was absolutely fine.
[201.46] Frank: So I think radio is not working.
[205.46] Frank: Well, we thought at that point it was the receiver.
[207.46] Frank: But then later, flying the UMX Radian, I was flying that and all of a sudden that locked up.
[214.46] Frank: And again, it didn't say it had lost signal.
[217.46] Frank: It didn't say RSSI low, RSSI critical.
[221.46] Frank: Didn't have any issues.
[223.46] Frank: It said it was still connected, but it was just there was no response from the sticks.
[228.46] Frank: So I think my Tyrannus has died possibly.
[232.46] Frank: So I asked around in the LDO discord, which there is an LDO discord.
[238.46] Frank: And I also asked painless because I asked painless about these things.
[243.46] Frank: And I have bought a Radiomaster TX16S.
[249.46] Frank: That's what I bought.
[251.46] Aries: I could have given you mine sat on the wall over here.
[255.46] Aries: It's been there for like it's been there for 18 months.

[263.46] Aries: Because I've got the Tyrannus.
[266.46] Jack: He's got the Mr. Steve version.

[272.46] Aries: I'm trying to downsize all my gear into a small compact package.

[279.46] Aries: So it's easier to take up the mountains rather than, you know, the BPX3 Pro backpacks and stuff.

[288.46] Aries: So I'm trying to downsize everything into a small manageable.

[292.46] Frank: I was looking at some of the smaller radios, but my tick boxes were I wanted USB-C charging.

[303.46] Frank: I wanted both because I've got some UMX models.
[307.46] Frank: So I wanted the SMX and I wanted because I've got a load of a far sky receivers.
[314.46] Frank: I wanted to be able to still talk to them.
[317.46] Frank: So I wanted something with a majority protocol built into it.
[322.46] Frank: And I mean, ideally I wanted something smaller, but there was nothing that had all four.
[328.46] Aries: Yeah.
[329.46] Frank: That's a problem.
[330.46] Frank: Because I'm a pincher, so I wanted.
[332.46] Frank: Same.
[333.46] Frank: Yeah.
[334.46] Frank: Because I was looking at the T-light, the jumper T-light, which takes all the other
[339.46] Frank: boxes apart from it's only really good for thumbs.
[342.46] Frank: And then I was like, I can't be doing that.
[346.46] BlueOwl: Why is that?
[347.46] BlueOwl: Is it because it's so small or is it the sticks?
[351.46] Frank: It's where the sticks, how the gimbals are compared to the rest of the radio, I think,
[357.46] Frank: from what I've seen people are just saying, like, you can't get a good grip of it.
[361.46] Frank: It's basically falling out your hands by the time.
[364.46] Frank: Because it's so high up.
[366.46] Frank: The gimbals are so high up, I think.
[369.46] Frank: I can't remember which way around it is.
[371.46] Frank: Well, everyone who's reviewed it has said it's no good if you're pinching.

[378.46] Aries: I mean, your kids, you know, not trying to promote TBS or anything like that.

[386.46] Aries: No, but what I want to say is the Tango 2 does have the ability to have the GR module
[393.46] Aries: add-on.
[394.46] Aries: So you can have a multi-protocol that way.
[397.46] Aries: But you need to upgrade the PCB inside first to be able to get that function.
[403.46] Aries: I was on the same line.
[406.46] Aries: I've got a lot of six and eight channel FrSky receivers in wings and planes in the shed
[413.46] Aries: that I've not touched on in a long time.
[416.46] Aries: But I've been looking at ways of getting that small, compact radio system together.
[422.46] Aries: And that seems to be the way forward.
[424.46] Aries: So I'm going to take a look at that this summer, hopefully.
[428.46] Frank: Do they do a tracer version of the Tango?
[431.46] Frank: Does that exist?
[433.46] Aries: It's just the extra module, isn't it?
[437.46] Jack: Yeah, they do the module.
[439.46] Frank: But it's not building.
[440.46] Frank: They do the module, yeah.
[441.46] Frank: Because that's what I'm thinking.
[443.46] Frank: If I'm going anywhere, I'm not going to bother with crossfire.
[446.46] Frank: Because as much as everyone's crossfire is fine, I fly with groups of people more than
[454.46] Frank: I fly long range.
[456.46] Frank: And I've just seen in races where they're like, you have to be in this particular mode
[460.46] Frank: to make sure that you don't swamp the 800 megahertz band and all that.
[465.46] Frank: This feels like we're getting back to pegboards and things.
[468.46] Frank: I don't like this idea at all.
[470.46] Frank: I want to just be able to turn on my radio and not have to worry about it.
[474.46] Frank: So if I'm going anywhere, I'm going tracer or ghost.
[479.46] Jack: I think that the problem is back then was everyone showed up with their TBS transmitters
[487.46] Jack: and I reckon they had him on full power and sending telemetry and everything.
[494.46] Frank: But that's the point, isn't it?
[496.46] Frank: It's still at races.
[497.46] Frank: They're like, you have to make sure you've turned off your telemetry.
[500.46] Frank: It's such a small bandwidth that we're having to turn off features to have four people
[509.46] Frank: racing or six people racing.
[511.46] Frank: How's that going to work when I've got 20 people that I want to fly with?
[514.46] Frank: This sounds terrible.
[516.46] Frank: Yeah, that's a bit annoying.
[518.46] Frank: Obviously FPV is tricky to fly with 20 people, but I do fly a load of line of sight.
[523.46] Frank: So that makes things a bit weird.
[527.46] Jack: Yeah.
[528.46] Jack: That was my biggest mistake selling my X9D.
[531.46] Jack: I should never have sold it.
[534.46] Jack: I've still got mine.
[536.46] Jack: I don't know what's wrong with it.

[548.46] Jack: So I've got a buddy who's got his jumper.

[564.46] Frank: Because that was my problem with the Jumper TX12 that I was...
[568.46] Frank: T12, whatever it is.
[570.46] Frank: Jumper 12 I was also looking at.
[572.46] Frank: Because that's a smaller one.
[574.46] Frank: But that's like mini USB.
[576.46] Frank: Tranis has mini USB. That's like six years old.
[579.46] Frank: Mini USB was dead then.
[581.46] Jack: So he got his and someone's put an upgraded type C connector thing in it.
[590.46] Jack: And it will not connect to the computer.
[593.46] Jack: So if anyone's got a solution to that, please let me know.
[597.46] Aries: I need to check the ground on the connector pins.

[605.46] Aries: It's just USB, isn't it?

[613.46] Jack: Someone's done this sort of mod to put type C in it.
[618.46] Aries: Sounds like they just de-soldered the original one and then added on the type C connector.
[623.46] Aries: So they'll need to check the ground for it.
[627.46] Aries: And make sure they're getting the right voltage.
[629.46] Aries: Because it takes different to the mini USB.
[635.46] Aries: On Micro.
[637.46] Jack: Yeah, I just can't get it to update in OpenTX or anything.
[641.46] Jack: The solution is to buy a radio master.
[644.46] Jack: Yeah, I'll let them know.
[647.46] Frank: I feel like there's going to be this feud now between Tracer and Ghost being like the Windows and Mac.
[656.46] Frank: And then there's going to be Express LRS being the Linux in the corner.
[660.46] Aries: See, that's one thing I wanted to talk about as well, is Express LRS.
[664.46] Aries: That is tasty.
[666.46] Jack: What I've seen of it is thoroughly impressed me.
[670.46] Frank: Yeah.
[672.46] Frank: To start off with, what are those three?
[677.46] Frank: Both Tracer and Ghost are 2.4GHz protocols based off of the same hardware, effectively the same radio chip.
[690.46] Frank: And obviously the Tracer is the TBS one, so all the kind of, what they call of it is the engine.
[700.46] Frank: It's the same code that they've built for Crossfire.
[704.46] Frank: It's just modified to work for this particular chip.
[707.46] Frank: So it works on 2.4GHz.
[709.46] Frank: And the Ghost is obviously built from scratch for this chip.
[715.46] Frank: So that's kind of their competing stories there.
[719.46] Frank: Ours is better because most of the code has been sitting there on Crossfire for years, so you can be sure it works.
[728.46] Frank: And then Ghost is like, ah, but we've built it specifically for this, so it'll be better in these ways because it's using these other features.
[736.46] Frank: And we're not having to compete with our other product, which we'll see.
[741.46] Frank: And then there's Express LRS.
[744.46] Frank: I don't really know much about it.
[746.46] Frank: Is it still 2.4 or is it 900?
[748.46] Frank: I couldn't work out what's going on there.
[751.46] Aries: 86895.
[754.46] Aries: So it's the same as Crossfire.
[757.46] Aries: So it's the same as Crossfire.
[758.46] Frank: OK.
[759.46] Aries: It's not 2.4.
[760.46] Aries: But the receivers are tiny.
[764.46] Aries: And when I say tiny, they're smaller than a five pence piece.
[768.46] Frank: That's small.
[769.46] Frank: For everyone who doesn't know what a five pence piece is, it's small.
[774.46] Aries: It's about the size of a young lady's pinky nail.
[777.46] Aries: Yeah.
[780.46] Aries: So pick that size if you like it.

[789.46] Aries: So that's what had me interested.
[792.46] Aries: It's nothing.
[793.46] Aries: You look at some receivers and you're like, where am I going to put this monstrosity?
[797.46] Aries: You know, an 8-channel FrSky receiver with diversity and tenors.
[801.46] Aries: You're like, I need a whole back section of my quad to stick this in.
[805.46] Aries: But when you've got this Express LRS, tiny little module, just wrap it and shrink,
[810.46] Aries: wrap and tuck it away somewhere and you're done.
[813.46] Frank: Yeah.
[814.46] Frank: I mean, to be honest, I don't have a problem with FrSky and the AWCST,
[820.46] Frank: which the protocol that runs on or that has run on,
[824.46] Frank: because I've got loads of those receivers.
[826.46] Frank: I'm happy with them.
[827.46] Frank: I can fly further than I want to on those because I just fly in a park or FPV,
[835.46] Frank: not a huge amount of power.
[836.46] Frank: So I don't care.
[837.46] Frank: I'm not flying far away.
[839.46] Frank: I don't care.
[840.46] Frank: But why I'm looking for a new radio system is because I can't get the receivers
[847.46] Frank: because FrSky are now selling access receivers or archer receivers,
[852.46] Frank: whatever the new one is, and all the other kind of knockoff receivers,
[857.46] Frank: like RadioMaster brought out FrSky receivers,
[860.46] Frank: and now you can't get them anywhere, presumably because FrSky went...
[864.46] Frank: You can't be doing that.
[867.46] Frank: So I would happily just stick with my Tyrannus if it works,
[872.46] Frank: and I would happily stick with AWCST, but can't get them.
[877.46] Frank: So I'm just going to have to buy a new module and invest in a new system.
[883.46] Frank: I mean, that's why the multi-protocol is good,
[886.46] Frank: is because at the moment I can use all the models I already have,
[890.46] Frank: but I do need to buy a new module that has receivers I can actually get hold of.
[896.46] Frank: And I feel like both ImmersionRC and TBS are secure enough
[901.46] Frank: and have been around long enough and know their way around supply chains enough
[906.46] Frank: that the supply of both their receivers is probably fairly equal in the future.
[912.46] Frank: So I don't think one of them is a safer bet than the other on that way,
[917.46] Frank: but Express LRS, I feel like...
[921.46] Frank: I don't know who's behind that particularly.
[923.46] Frank: I don't have a supply of that.
[926.46] Frank: Yes, in a year's time I will definitely be able to buy Express LRS receivers.
[931.46] Frank: I'm not sure about that.
[933.46] Aries: As far as I'm aware, the source for these is like Aliexpress,
[938.46] Aries: if you're in the UK anyway, China shipping and all that stuff.
[942.46] Aries: But one thing to note around all these transmitter-receiver combos is cost.
[951.46] Aries: If anyone's in the chat and they're new to FPV or flying model toys or whatever,
[959.46] Aries: cost can be a big factor.
[961.46] Aries: And Express LRS is quite cheap in comparison.
[965.46] Aries: So like the receivers themselves, you're looking at 12 to 13 quid
[970.46] Aries: rather than 28 to 30 for some.
[974.46] Aries: That is true.
[976.46] Aries: It's just another option, you know, and it's open source as well.
[983.34] Aries: So there's a lot of community support.
[988.91] Frank: I think I've just been a bit spoiled by having a Taranis for six years
[993.91] Frank: and just like I can buy the same, effectively the same receiver for the six years
[999.91] Frank: and I don't have to invest in any new hardware.
[1002.91] Frank: And I'm like, if I buy an Express LRS,
[1006.91] Frank: I feel like that's going to be a year before the hardware has changed so much
[1010.91] Frank: that I have to buy another new module.
[1013.91] Frank: But I'm not entirely convinced that even if I bought a ghost module
[1017.91] Frank: or a tracer module that in two years time I wouldn't have to buy another one
[1021.91] Frank: because they've upgraded the protocol, the hardware and it's all changed again.
[1027.91] Frank: There's a bit of hype train kind of planned obsolescence going back to,
[1032.91] Frank: going back a couple of weeks.
[1034.91] Aries: Yeah.
[1035.91] Aries: The worst hashtag ever is hype train in this, in this hobby.

[1044.91] Frank: I'm happy to ignore the hype train until it means that I can't buy stuff that I need.

[1123.61] Frank: So when I bind to my multi-protocol module that's in the RadioMaster,
[1132.61] Frank: I can bind that to an FRSky receiver and then also have to tune the frequency.
[1139.61] Frank: Seems weird.
[1141.61] Frank: And there's also like a million, because they're exposing all the different versions of the protocol.
[1149.18] Frank: I mean, I got the RadioMaster the other day and turned it on.
[1152.18] Frank: I can work out for ages, but I actually had to look it up how to change the module.
[1156.18] Frank: So I'm pressing all the buttons and nothing's happening.
[1159.18] Frank: I don't understand what's going on.
[1161.18] Frank: It's a model from one to another one.
[1164.18] Frank: It turns out OpenTX has changed a lot in the years since I had my Tyrannus.
[1172.18] Aries: I have not updated OpenTX in like two and a half years.
[1177.18] Aries: So I've no idea what's next.
[1180.18] Jack: There's nothing new.
[1182.18] Jack: We still haven't made it over to three yet.
[1185.18] Jack: So that's why all this EdgeTX is coming out.
[1189.18] Jack: Long story short, Frank, you can get the TBS agent light on your transmitter if you've gone with the T16.
[1203.18] Jack: And it's kind of like an app, so that's kind of nice.

[1208.18] Frank: That's what's kind of floored me, like doing things that I can do in seconds on my Tyrannus.

[1227.18] Frank: So you can have widgets in the corner and you can have multiple different things going on.
