[87.48] Frank: Well, so at the time of recording, we've got a couple of weeks to Wings and Wheels.
[93.48] Frank: And by the time it all goes out on the podcast, it will be less than that.
[99.48] Frank: But I thought we should, you know, seeing as it's basically, as far as I can tell,
[104.48] Frank: the first properly publicly open event this year in the UK, RCWISE.
[111.48] Frank: I mean, there's the Western one going on this weekend,
[114.48] Frank: but it seems like if it is public, they're being quiet about it.
[118.48] Frank: So Wings of Wheels seems like the first big one.
[121.48] Frank: We should have them on and tell us what's going on and what we can look forward to.
[126.48] Frank: So Mike and Nigel, what have you been hard at work getting ready
[133.48] Frank: for the big launch?
[135.48] Nigel: Well, everything.
[137.48] Nigel: A lot.
[139.48] Nigel: You know what these events are like?
[141.48] Nigel: Yeah.
[142.48] Nigel: This is the second one.
[143.48] Nigel: I mean, obviously, second one should have been last year,
[145.48] Nigel: got cancelled along with all the other events.
[148.48] Nigel: So Wings and Wheels haven't traditionally had drones at that show.
[152.48] Nigel: It's been Wings and Wheels, funnily enough.
[155.48] Nigel: And they decided to have drones 2019 and asked me if I could arrange that.
[161.48] Nigel: It was quite small the first year.
[164.48] Nigel: Tony was there flying X-Class with Danny, which went down an absolute storm.
[171.48] Nigel: And we had a couple of tiny whoops.
[173.48] Nigel: We had drone junkie there.
[175.48] Nigel: We had the guy from Drone User Magazine, Steve Pinewell.
[181.48] Nigel: He demoed some camera drones.
[185.48] Nigel: And it was just a very casual affair.
[189.48] Nigel: 2020 should have been the first proper tiny whoop British Championships.
[196.48] Nigel: And again, the pandemic.
[199.48] Nigel: Put paid to that.
[200.48] Nigel: Yeah.
[202.48] Nigel: And we didn't even know if the show was going to go ahead this year until maybe three months ago
[206.48] Nigel: when Boris decided, yes, we can.
[208.48] Nigel: And so it's been a mad rush since then to get things ready.
[212.48] Nigel: So, yeah, this year it is going to be a lot bigger than the first year.
[217.48] Nigel: We've got two separate marquees.
[219.48] Nigel: One for we've got an outside flight line.
[222.48] Nigel: We've demoing again.
[223.48] Nigel: So we've got X-Class again.
[225.48] Nigel: Tony's coming.
[226.48] Nigel: And Danny, we've got two other X-Class pilots, Martin and Colin.
[234.48] Nigel: I forget the second name.
[236.48] Nigel: I think it was Clive.
[238.48] Nigel: Oh, Clive.
[239.48] Nigel: Sorry, it is.
[240.48] Nigel: It's Clive, yeah.
[242.48] Nigel: So I'm kind of hoping we'll get to see four X-Class up in the air at one time,
[246.48] Nigel: whether that's possible or not.
[247.48] Frank: Is it enough for a race?
[249.48] Frank: Is there enough space there for each race?
[251.48] Nigel: There is enough for a simple race with maybe a simple oval.
[255.48] Nigel: But that'll be down to Tony and the guys to decide whether they've got this.
[259.48] Tony: Sounds good to me.
[261.48] Tony: Oh, well.
[263.48] Nigel: So Martin's already said he's going to bring some flags and stuff down so that we can set them at simple.
[267.48] Nigel: Nice.
[268.48] Nigel: So the open flight line will have X-Class.
[270.48] Nigel: It's got a lot of pro camera drones as well because it's not just about racing.
[275.48] Nigel: It has always been set up that way.
[277.48] Nigel: It's about everything drone.
[278.48] Nigel: That's why they call it drone.
[280.48] Nigel: And so Steven Timewell is running that outside line.
[283.48] Nigel: He's got lots of different professional pilots coming along and doing demos as well as the X-Class.
[288.48] Nigel: We've got a couple of guys, Tom Mundy being one of them.
[291.48] Nigel: He's a great pilot.
[292.48] Nigel: He's doing demos for five inch as well and a couple of other pilots.
[299.48] Nigel: And so the open flight line should be a lot of fun, a lot for people to see.
[304.48] Nigel: And then we've got a second marquee and that's dedicated to Tinywup, which is my passion right now.
[311.48] Nigel: Hence that.
[313.48] Nigel: And we are actually opening it, running an open championship for Wings and Wheels.
[318.48] Nigel: We've got 25 competitive pilots.
[322.48] Nigel: Heats during the Saturday finals on the Sunday.
[327.48] Nigel: LED track.
[329.48] Nigel: For those that camp and stay over, if people haven't bought tickets yet, if you're going to do and you're going to stay over,
[336.48] Nigel: you get to see all the night racing, the night flying like they do at Weston.
[341.48] Nigel: But we'll have the night track lit up and that's when the team racing kicks in.
[346.48] Nigel: So we're having team racing, Tinywup team racing in the evening and then a Tinywup party to finish off on the Saturday night.
[353.48] Nigel: Be a Pong. Team Be a Pong, would you believe?
[356.48] Nigel: So, yeah, so lots of fun and lots of things.
[359.48] Nigel: Drone Junkie is going to be there with a load of extra exhibits as well.
[363.48] Nigel: They've got, is it 174th scale, Mike? I can't remember.
[368.48] Mike: 172nd or 176th, I think.
[371.48] Nigel: Right. They're absolutely tiny.
[374.48] Nigel: And he's got a drag track set up with a laser timer and everything for people to compete on.
[380.48] Nigel: We've got FPV rock crawling that people can get involved in.
[385.48] Nigel: Yeah, there's loads going on. So it should be a good fun show.
[389.48] Frank: Nice. Finley Stannard was asking if there's any five inch,
[395.48] Frank: as in not just the demo of any five inch racing or open flight lines for people to kind of fly in.
[401.48] Nigel: There is no five inch racing as such.
[404.48] Nigel: We made this decision consciously when we did the first one,
[408.48] Nigel: because we do believe there's a lot of events do do five inch racing.
[413.48] Nigel: It takes a lot of organizing and then you've got the safety aspects.
[417.48] Nigel: We wanted to make this an all round, so there's demos of various things.
[421.48] Nigel: And five inch does take up a lot of space.
[424.48] Nigel: Tinywup isn't getting enough exposure.
[428.48] Nigel: There's many clubs around the club, Tinywup clubs,
[430.48] Nigel: but they don't really have a big event to show off what they do.
[434.48] Nigel: So that's why the decision was let's dedicate wings and wheels to Tinywup mainly for the racing
[440.48] Nigel: and give those pilots a chance to have a big event to go to.
[443.48] Nigel: So no, no five inch racing.
[445.48] Nigel: We'll be demoing and I'll get back to Finley.
[448.48] Nigel: I have got his email. I'll get back to him on whether the open track will allow us to do fun fly for five inch in the evening.
[458.48] Nigel: That's a possibility, but I can't promise anything, but we'll find out.
[462.48] Nigel: I'll ask Steve and see if we can arrange that.
[467.48] Frank: Hopefully Finley, cross your fingers there.
[470.48] Curry: So for people coming along, Nigel, what do they have to know that's special and different
[475.48] Curry: due to whatever the Covid regulations are at that particular time?
[480.48] Nigel: Yeah, well, that's raised its ugly head, doesn't it?
[484.48] Curry: Look at the elephant in the room.
[487.48] Nigel: Yeah, we're all getting ready to party and then Boris hit us with one.
[492.48] Nigel: Well, it's not going to change the event as such.
[496.48] Nigel: We still could have a lot of fun.
[499.48] Nigel: It's not changed.
[501.48] Nigel: We've not had to take any of the exhibits down or anything like that.
[506.48] Nigel: For spectators, weather permitting, and we mean as in wind, because Tinywups don't like a lot of wind,
[514.48] Nigel: we are quite confident we'll be able to open one side of the marquee so that people,
[519.48] Nigel: there's no restriction on people then watching the racing, the Tinywup racing, on the outside.
[525.48] Nigel: The open flight line, there's no difference. They can watch that.
[529.48] Nigel: It's inside the marquees where there's going to be a difference.
[532.48] Nigel: If we do have to close the marquee and they come inside, it'll be a two metre distance.
[536.48] Nigel: And spectators wearing face masks, unfortunately.
[542.48] Nigel: The bar is table service as are the burger bars, but they've done,
[547.48] Nigel: all of those guys have been doing events this year where that's been the case.
[552.48] Nigel: So they're all well set up for that.
[554.48] Nigel: And so the only difference is if we do have to go inside the marquee spectator wise,
[559.48] Nigel: they'll have to wear a mask.
[560.48] Nigel: We'll have to limit the numbers.
[562.48] Nigel: Other than that, for us, for the pilots,
[566.48] Nigel: I'm currently in the middle of building some perspex screens to go between the pilots where they sit down,
[571.48] Nigel: so that we don't have to wear masks.
[573.48] Nigel: None of the pilots will need to wear masks.
[576.48] Nigel: And same for the race control table, which is probably a good thing.
[581.48] Nigel: That way the race controller and the commentator can't fight because there's a scream between them.
[588.48] Nigel: Anything to add, Mike? Because I've probably missed loads.
[593.48] Mike: Not as far as Covid rags, I think.
[596.48] Mike: I mean, there's going to be a net in place to stop the spectators getting too close.
[601.48] Mike: That's about it with Covid.

[606.48] Frank: How are you doing the team racing? How is that going to work?
[610.48] Frank: Mike, your turn.
[612.48] Mike: I knew you were going to say that.
[615.48] Mike: OK, so it's going to be teams of four.
[619.48] Mike: It's essentially going to be a relay race.
[624.48] Mike: All pilots have to take their turn.
[628.48] Mike: So the first pilot goes up, does as many laps as he wants to do, comes in.
[633.48] Mike: Someone's ready to unplug him and plug the next drone in.
[637.48] Mike: The next pilot goes off, tries to get as many laps done in a certain amount of time.
[641.48] Mike: So it's going to be absolute chaos, but it will be brilliant fun.
[646.48] Frank: And how are the teams being put up? I mean, are there still spaces or?
[651.48] Mike: Team racing, we are still doing tickets for that.
[655.48] Mike: I believe you have to contact Wings and Wheels directly to get them.
[659.48] Mike: Ideally, if full teams joined at four, that would be absolutely brilliant.
[663.48] Mike: So we don't have to put any more people in teams.
[666.48] Mike: But we can always work around it.
[669.48] Frank: How's best for people to actually do that then?
[673.48] Frank: Is that an email address or is that a link on the website somewhere?
[677.48] Mike: There is a link on the website, I believe.
[680.48] Mike: I'm not sure if they've actually done tickets specifically for it or not.

[708.48] Nigel: And that includes the camping. That's for the whole weekend camping.
[711.48] Nigel: And you will get to enter the team racing if you want to.
[714.48] Nigel: Also, a fun fly in the evening. We open the track on the Saturday evening so people can want to bring the whoops, they can fly.
[721.48] Nigel: Anyone who's coming to the event anyway, maybe they're flying Wings, you've got a whoop.
[726.48] Nigel: The track will be open from what time, Mike? Maybe nine o'clock or something like that.
[730.48] Mike: Maybe a bit later.
[732.48] Mike: The free track we're looking at around eight o'clock, hopefully.
[737.48] Nigel: So it'll be a free track. So if people have brought the whoops with them, they can fly and enjoy that.
[745.48] Nigel: The reason for the nickname Jaffa Cake, we're all flying.
[750.48] Nigel: I'll tell you what's really wonderful about this event as well.
[753.48] Nigel: We've got all the race organizers and we've got organizers from different clubs, Mike's from a drum racing Cornwall.
[760.48] Nigel: You know, we've got Paul Jaggers from Indoor Racing London.
[764.48] Nigel: We've got, you know, a lot of the main tiny whoop club organizers and we're all racing.
[770.48] Nigel: There's not a single person there that isn't actually racing.
[773.48] Nigel: So there's nobody just sat behind a desk.
[776.48] Nigel: And I'm in a team called Bakery Boys.
[779.48] Nigel: We've changed our pilot names to different cakes.
[783.48] Nigel: I'm Jaffa Cake. We've got Lemon Drizzle, Mini Rolls Rule.

[792.48] Mike: Baked Berry Pie.

[807.48] Nigel: Yeah, I think we've got six teams at the moment, Mike.

[815.48] Nigel: And, you know, if we could get another two teams, so if we're racing four teams at a time, that would be perfect.
[822.48] Nigel: So there is definitely space.
[824.48] Nigel: Maybe you four, you four could put a lecture on our team together and come and join Tony at Wings and Wheels.

[834.48] Tony: I don't think it's broken.

[839.48] Tony: Yeah, it's pretty much not good.
[843.48] Tony: But I might buy one off-gen when I'm there because I haven't had a fly of a whoop for a tiny whoop for a long time.

[1009.48] Nigel: We also had Carlos with a tiny whoop.
[1012.48] Nigel: We had one of the 85 HD tiny whoops.
[1015.48] Nigel: He was scanning the crowd doing that.
[1018.48] Nigel: We had Tony and Danny flying the X-Class.
[1022.48] Nigel: I was hoping his name had come to me.
[1024.48] Nigel: Danny?
[1027.48] Nigel: He's the young pilot.
[1029.48] Nigel: Yeah.
[1032.48] Nigel: We had the young pilot with his five inch.
[1038.48] Nigel: He was doing a chase and he's right behind Danny.
[1042.48] Nigel: Danny slowed down for a second for some reason.
[1045.48] Nigel: I think he was getting ready to do a turn and come back.
[1048.48] Nigel: As he slowed down in between his arms,
[1051.48] Nigel: he went straight through the middle of the arms,
[1053.48] Nigel: underneath the props, straight through.
[1056.48] Nigel: Danny didn't see this.
[1059.48] Nigel: Yeah, straight through without hitting a prop and both of them were fine.
[1064.48] Nigel: We all get back to our marquee later afterwards
[1068.48] Nigel: and he's jumping up and down and going,
[1071.48] Nigel: I can't believe what happened.
[1072.48] Nigel: You've got to see the footage.
[1073.48] Nigel: You put it on his laptop.
[1074.48] Nigel: When we played it in slow motion,
[1076.48] Nigel: he actually did go straight through the arms without hitting a prop.
[1081.48] Nigel: Absolutely incredible.
[1084.48] Nigel: I was commentating in the commentary box with all this.
[1087.48] Nigel: At the same time, I was explaining about the tiny whoops.
[1091.48] Nigel: I'm saying to everybody, tiny whoops, perfectly safe.
[1096.48] Nigel: You can't get injured with a tiny whoop.
[1098.48] Nigel: Absolutely fantastic.
[1100.48] Nigel: As I came out of the commentary box,
[1103.48] Nigel: Carlos, who'd been flying this 85mm HD whoop,
[1107.48] Nigel: he stood there with a cut on his cheek
[1110.48] Nigel: and he accidentally face-punched himself with a rod
[1114.48] Nigel: and cut himself.
[1115.48] Nigel: There's me telling everybody it's perfectly safe
[1118.48] Nigel: and outside the public are watching him smash himself in his face.
[1123.48] Nigel: It was great. It was fun.
[1125.48] Nigel: It's going to kill me, Tony, not remembering.
[1128.48] Nigel: I'm not remembering his name.
[1130.48] Tony: He's going to kill me.
[1133.48] Tony: Let me go off here for two seconds.

[1140.48] Frank: Are you going to have any simulators sitting around the side somewhere?
[1144.48] Nigel: Really sadly, not this year.
[1147.48] Nigel: It's a real shame because tiny whoop goals becoming really popular.
[1151.48] Nigel: It's doing really well.
[1153.48] Nigel: Unfortunately, Ray Smith,
[1158.48] Nigel: who has all that kit and is the genius behind it,
[1162.48] Nigel: he's tied up at the moment.
[1164.48] Nigel: He's doing a lot of work with schools and colleges.
[1167.48] Nigel: Not a lot of people know he's got a third sim code.
[1171.48] Nigel: He wrote a pilot, which is a professional simulator pilot
[1176.48] Nigel: called camera drones, et cetera.
[1178.48] Nigel: He's doing a lot of work with universities
[1182.48] Nigel: and organisations with that, which went really well.
[1185.48] Nigel: Unfortunately, he's busy.
[1188.48] Nigel: I could have run it, but me and my could be.
[1193.48] Nigel: That too could be making sure that the team races.
[1198.48] Nigel: It doesn't become too much chaos.
[1201.48] Tony: Alfie Mitchell.
[1203.48] Tony: Alfie Mitchell, of course.
[1206.48] Tony: I pictured his face. I forgot his bloody name.
[1210.48] Curry: We could ask you for that name again in 15 minutes

[1216.48] Tony: It was Alfie. He's a really good pilot, isn't he?
[1220.48] Nigel: He is. He's underrated, Alfie,
[1223.48] Nigel: because he made it to South Korea,
[1227.48] Nigel: not last year, year before, to the World Championships.
[1231.48] Nigel: He was absolutely fantastic.
[1235.48] Nigel: He's a bit like Luke Bannister,
[1238.48] Nigel: where he just doesn't feel pressure.
[1240.48] Nigel: He's such a good ambassador as well for the sport,
[1244.48] Nigel: because he's such a pleasant lad.
[1246.48] Nigel: So nice.
[1248.48] Nigel: A bit like Gary Kent.
[1250.48] Nigel: He's another pilot from the past
[1252.48] Nigel: who's just one of those guys who's so nice on camera.
[1255.48] Nigel: Anybody asks him. He's happy to talk to them.

[1297.48] Tony: Fossil's going to be bringing any giant frames along with him,

[2695.64] Nigel: Not that, you know, there's a place for it, but I don't think, in terms of tying it up, the whole point of tying it up is the social side of it is as important as the flying.

[3482.48] Nigel: is finding venues that are willing to have it on.
[3486.24] Nigel: Sadly, some have lost venues due to the pandemic and not being there.
[3490.48] Nigel: Some have been successful and found new venues.
[3497.12] Nigel: A lot of the clubs were building up and it was going really well only to be put on hold.
[3502.24] Nigel: It's quite a thankless job being the event organiser.
[3508.16] Nigel: If it weren't for people like Mike and you guys and everybody else, there wouldn't be any.
[3515.6] Nigel: I would encourage pilots when you see your local clubs trying to get going,

[3524.96] Nigel: because if venues don't see enough pilots turning up,
[3528.08] Nigel: we won't have those local meets and those weekly meets.
[3531.76] Nigel: So that's what we need right now is support from the pilots
[3535.36] Nigel: to help the clubs that are building back up get going again.

[3547.84] Nigel: there's a wealth of experience and help out there.
[3552.96] Nigel: Paul Jaggers, for example, has helped several clubs start up
[3556.32] Nigel: and all the organisers like Mike are always happy to give advice to anyone.
[3562.08] Nigel: That's what it's about. We need more clubs and we need the pilots to support us.
