[19.2] Jack: Mikey dread on with the show. [53.62] Frank: Good evening and unfortunately we do have to announce some sad news and the good friend of the show galore instine we got we got an email from a husband to say that she she died recently unfortunately very sadly and she's you know being on the show quite a few times she came to many air show. [76.34] Frank: I'm sure you know we we all had some good laughs with her and and it would be sad to see that she's gone there has been a sort of memorial youtube channel set up with some memories of her and that husband's going to keep posting out on there and so I'll put that in the description and yeah the the there's still the the podcasts. [104.98] Frank: That we have with her as well those are still up for free wherever you listen to your podcasts. [112.38] Curry: She was such a serious journalist and the subject she touched were you know quite nasty but on the show she was so funny I don't think I've laughed as much as the time she attempted to tell our fortunes using a weird pack of cards that was hilarious. [133.06] Jack: Definitely definitely one of my favorite memories of her and also I really enjoyed meeting her at the mini air show and she. [144.98] Jack: She as much as she enjoyed the show we thoroughly enjoyed her company and she was deeply missed by all of us absolutely. [155.14] Jack: Absolutely. [157.18] Jack: In other news it's also become increasingly clear to us that Tony. [163.02] Jack: Started to develop a drinking problem and has become very unstable on the show so therefore he's gone to rehab and he has joined the flat earth society and he will be away for a while until he gets better and until he finds the edge of this flat earth. [185.98] Jack: So if if you'd like there's a there's a go fund me to kind of help Tony along that along that way and yeah so he won't be around for a while but you know we all get better buddy and let's start the show. [203.58] Jack: Tonight we are joined by our overlord and master Andrew slash rank good evening. [210.22] Jack: Our special guest for tonight is a cerebrus is that velvet. [217.66] Jack: Can I read properly. [221.26] Cerb: I'm not one of the X man. [223.26] Curry: No I know I know I think I think free headed dog yeah that guards the entrance of hell and you'll get there yeah. [231.7] Jack: He's not going to try and say go try and say it again Jack one more time I don't know is it is it not cerebrus. [238.42] Jack: Cerberus Cerberus I'm sorry am I saying it the Yankee way or something. [246.82] Jack: I don't know. [248.82] Curry: I'm sorry. [251.26] Curry: Just in case you're not aware Jack if Tony's not here then you're going to have to be the butt of all jokes. [257.02] Jack: I thought I was anyway. [260.9] Jack: Maybe he did do some heavy lifting in the show. [267.58] Jack: No you you run a drone shop I believe is that right. [273.46] Jack: Because I don't run a drone shop. [276.5] Jack: You also say you also say now well I've a love it winter blue as well. [283.98] Cerb: I did I rescued him from the evil of. [288.82] Cerb: I know he was he was destitute and homeless and we had a spare room so we charged him an extortionate rent so. [297.94] Jack: And made him work. [300.14] Curry: I think the key part to running professional podcast is researching your guests thoroughly and. [306.98] Jack: Reading research. [309.1] Jack: I know I should I'm sorry. [311.26] Curry: I'm not saying a word. [313.06] Curry: I know he's only just woken up. [317.18] Frank: Miss Reddit as maybe you know show and shop maybe that's your confusion there. [323.02] Cerb: Yeah so I am yeah yeah hi everybody out there in YouTube my name's cerebrus and I run a YouTube shop. [332.38] Cerb: What's your show. [336.06] Cerb: So I along with a couple of people started a community called killer quads. [343.22] Cerb: So you can find us on YouTube and Facebook Facebook group and I run events and stuff with those guys. [351.42] Cerb: I just this last weekend run my first British qualifying event so a race that is you can earn points for the British qualifiers this year. [364.54] Cerb: And myself and winter blue do a popular YouTube channel podcast thing a little bit like you guys but a bit worse cool. [376.98] Cerb: Not with me erratic. [379.06] Frank: You'll have to fight us for that title. [382.54] Cerb: We've been off the air for a little while whilst winter blues been on call and moving house and stuff like that but we'll be back in a couple of weeks. [390.54] Cerb: Every two weeks we usually do a show for an hour. [394.3] Frank: You'll find the old ones on YouTube go Google for that Google me on YouTube is definitely in the in the description is the killer quads YouTube channel which I believe is where you can find quadrantic. [407.46] Stephen: We just had a one ninety nine donation for cerebrus. [413.54] Jack: Your new name I'm so sorry about that yeah we're also joined by Stephen Bell Rick. [421.18] Stephen: Hello I might drop the bell Rick part but that's what I've been using over on discord since since forever. [427.34] Jack: Hello everyone and our beloved everyone's favorite curry kitten hello who will now take gales place in reading our fortune with weird cards. [442.74] Jack: Weirdly nice yeah it's yeah and I'm and the person in the show is me Jack who's not awake. [452.3] Jack: The only reason I'm here is because Frank phoned me and I'm going to sit here at the corner and shut up and wear this curry. [464.1] Frank: Yeah the reason we've got you on tonight is because winter blue was plugging your name in the audio discord because I was asking about the. [476.98] Frank: Sort of the best way of sort of managing frequencies as we're coming up to the LDO no event that we're doing in a couple of weeks time and because you know we've we've always avoided kind of the the racing events which are only just do kind of freestyle kind of that sort of stuff so you kind of always just been getting on with it. [506.98] Frank: And seeing what works but now that things have got a bit more complicated because there's digital in his analog and trying to kind of manage everything that's that's all got a bit difficult and winter blue said you'd know all about that man also he passed me on the this particular diagram from the guys who were also involved in the rotor hazards FPV timing it which I had a look into and that looks really cool and. [537.3] Frank: Winter blue again says that you would know a lot about that so I'm hoping we can pick your brains about all these things tonight. [546.1] Cerb: Yeah I can I can be picked on many of those topics. [550.9] Stephen: So it's the approach then is it just the person with the most powerful VTX wins until DJI guy fires up and then blankets everyone else. [559.74] Cerb: That would be a great way to race wouldn't it I've got 2,000 milliwatts somehow I'm winning cuz no one else can see. [572.38] Cerb: Definitely sounds like how some of the early race events worked but yeah we're pretty hot on that stuff now it's 25 milliwatt limit and we've you know most race directors have got some sort of bondage the immersion RC wand or. [589.34] Cerb: I have something that was kind of home built based on rotor has it actually so you can see who's peeking and who's not who's blasting across some of these cheap Chinese VTX is give them a couple of crashes and they seem to start broadcasting on for frequencies at once. [606.54] Cerb: Excellent well that's just what you want. [610.14] Frank: They both spread themselves for anyone who doesn't know what is rotor hazards as a as a thing because it's kind of a group of things but collectively what would you how would you describe it. [623.1] Cerb: So rotor has had came from roots in delta five which was a lot of time so back in the long long ago people were doing races with transponders. [633.9] Cerb: So you'd strap a transpond into your quad it would broadcast its own unique number and the receiver would be. [640.22] Frank: That's on infrared right it's broadcasting. [644.06] Cerb: Yeah there are infrared versions of it there are not RF I don't know too much about because I've never used them and somebody came up with the clever idea I guess I don't know who came first immersion RC or. [657.26] Cerb: Or the delta five project you're broadcasting a signal already and it's a unique signal to you it's it's if you're our one then it's the frequency are one. [667.9] Cerb: So why don't we scan for that. [670.38] Cerb: So basically you place a box in the start finish gate that's got eight video receivers in it and you're looking at the RSSI so just like you would in your goggles you've got your RSSI in the top corner on corner wherever you put it. [683.42] Cerb: And if you draw a graph of what that RSSI is when you pass above the timer you see a peak and then you go off and fly around the rest of the track you might see a couple of little bubbles as it. [694.14] Cerb: You know as you do flippy floppies through a gate for the main peak is going to be when you cross the start finish line and basically you're counting the time between peaks. [704.3] Frank: So if you. [706.06] Frank: If someone wanted to to to get into this is it a case of going out and buying a kit or is it a case of bite like is it ready off the shelf for how how do you get into actually having one of these things if someone wants to run a race. [727.3] Cerb: So the first thing to do is hit the Facebook group for rotor hazard. [734.82] Cerb: Which is a bunch of guys that are into there's a get hub so if you're into coding at all and if you'd like to contribute it's an open source project so you can jump on there and start looking at the issues looking at the code and basically you're going to assemble your your your electronics let me just switch my view and I'll show you a rotor hazard. [756.54] Cerb: So okay so here's here's the contestants so this is the immersion RC box, this is the commercially available solution and you can see you've got your eight antennas there inside it so you've got your eight video receivers and a rotor hazard box is a little similar so this is the 3D printed case that I designed this is part of the project and inside this you can see that you've got your [786.54] Cerb: find PCBs okay so you can the PCBs are open source you can grab the files for those you can send them off to a PCB house and have those created and you see here we've got the eight RX five eight oh eight video receivers each one with an Arduino nano that collects the RSSI information and then it's all pulled by the Raspberry Pi here my version has a [816.62] Cerb: 18650 pack in it as well so it can sit out in the field [821.66] Cerb: and that right core run pretty much all day this is a single channel this just has one [827.5] Cerb: of those RX five eight oh eights inside it so if you're going out on your own practicing [833.1] Cerb: that's something I forked from the project because obviously being open source [839.5] Frank: yeah because that's I guess that's the sort of equivalent of so you can buy off the shelf from [844.54] Frank: Immersion RC they do this sort of they do a a puck version of the lap RF which does a similar [850.62] Frank: sort of thing where it can do one track one channel or it can track multiple channels but [857.1] Frank: slightly less reliably and then there's the lap RF eight way that would do eight of them [863.26] Stephen: those are designed to bluetooth to a phone aren't they is this more of a standalone thing [868.3] Cerb: the puck which is just it just has one receiver inside it so the if you're doing six channels [875.5] Cerb: with the puck so six pilots is about your limit you can go for eight if you go r8 you don't really [881.58] Cerb: want to do that you want to stick to six and use something called IMD six which i'll do a bit if [886.22] Cerb: you want um the puck has one receiver in it so basically scans channel one switches to channel [892.54] Cerb: two channel three so it's polling all of them which is why it's not so accurate [897.26] Cerb: and that bluetooth to your phone and that's that's great as a little practice box actually [901.98] Cerb: um the Immersion RC uh the eight-way timer if you're running a British qualifying event [908.78] Cerb: you're pretty much stuck with the lap the lap RF eight okay because the format of the race [915.18] Cerb: isn't yet supported by rotor hazard but that is something that's coming because it's open source [920.3] Cerb: uh we kind of identified that you know we want to run a race a certain way [924.86] Cerb: which live time can do so we're tangenting off into live time uh but rotor hazard can't quite [933.42] Cerb: do that yet but the next software update for rotor hazard that will be covered okay so rotor [937.9] Frank: hazard has the kind of the race management software as well so it's the hardware that's [945.02] Frank: doing is tracking the the the signal strength of each racer but it's also managing so is that sort [952.46] Frank: of is that what's kind of generating a load of i mean i've sort of been to the qualifying [958.86] Frank: events where there's you know a speaker shouting next racer is this one this one this one [964.86] Frank: racer one is in third position all that kind of stuff does the rotor hazard one do the same thing [970.38] Cerb: yeah it does so the that raspberry pi there in the rotor hazard that's that's running the the [975.9] Cerb: software and that's generating a website uh you can um if you're running an event and you want [982.86] Cerb: superb reliability you run a 50 meter ethernet lead out to your rotor hazard and you plug it in [987.82] Cerb: on the ethernet um if i'm doing a practice session on a Friday after work with the guys [993.9] Cerb: then i have um a wireless access point which will run off five volts and i put a battery pack on it [1000.06] Cerb: and i stick it halfway between the rotor hazard and the laptop and they all attach to the wi-fi and [1005.1] Cerb: i connect it that way so the rotor hazard you're connecting directly to the rotor hazard and it's [1009.98] Cerb: generating that website with all the information you're putting your pilot data in you're starting [1015.34] Cerb: and stopping your races and also at the end of a race no system is infallible so you'll maybe get [1022.46] Cerb: a guy whose vtx is a little bit low and you'll miss all his laps and you're okay that's a bit [1029.82] Cerb: strange you perhaps your signal a bit weak and we didn't see the peak so you'll you'll look for [1035.34] Cerb: when you're looking for that peak you'll look at the the high point and the low point of the peak [1040.14] Cerb: and so but if you uh if you peaked in between those two bars then that was a crossing yeah does [1046.46] Frank: that make sense so so if you've got a signal strength that is strong enough but also then [1054.62] Frank: goes away again you got it then then you've passed a gate so you have to have entered and exited [1062.06] Cerb: which reminds me of a girl i used to know [1067.5] Stephen: given that you've got all these receivers in there those are actually they're not just checking the [1071.26] Stephen: signal strength they're actually receiving analog feeds is there a way to take those analog feeds [1076.22] Stephen: and do like an eight up of all the pilots with the capture device no no no that would be no no [1080.86] Cerb: no that would be incredibly bad because what you want is uh a an antenna so um you'll notice those [1087.82] Stephen: video receivers there were no yeah of course you just want a localized signal you actually don't [1093.18] Stephen: want coverage of the whole track right if you suddenly pick up the whole track you can't see [1097.66] Cerb: the peak anymore okay so actually you want them hobbled so that's why they've got no antennas on [1102.78] Cerb: and the rfa um although it's got those antennas in it uh they the advertising blurb says that [1112.14] Cerb: these were specially designed um to to be pick up a local um signal they look like gps antennas [1121.34] Cerb: they do don't know they're about that kind of size um so yeah the the immersion rc blurb says [1127.98] Cerb: that they were specially designed to only pick up a video feed directly above like a little bubble [1133.18] Frank: above the okay so they're like very directional antennas yeah only pointing up through the gate [1141.74] Frank: is that why because there's also like seems to be a load of black magic and superstition about where [1147.42] Frank: you place these boxes and which direction they're pointing and all kinds of things yeah so [1153.1] Cerb: yeah the general rule of thumb is you stick it in the middle of the gate pointing upwards [1158.62] Cerb: and and that means you then have you have to think about maybe putting something in front of [1164.06] Cerb: the box so the quads aren't hitting it directly i was just thinking what happens when a five inch [1169.5] Stephen: goes straight into those beautiful DIY creations haven't had a direct strike yet so what i do um [1177.42] Cerb: is i have um how to describe it a metal wedge it's actually right uh just something to deflect [1185.1] Cerb: the impact yeah so and that sits on the ground i actually put that to the side of the gate [1191.1] Cerb: with the timer sitting underneath it now the thing to do then is point the opening away from [1196.78] Cerb: the rest of the track so you have to be kind of careful when you think about placing your start [1202.06] Cerb: gate you can't put your start gate um right next to a split s or something something fiddly if you've [1208.86] Cerb: got a figure eight circuit don't put it in the middle yeah that would that would be bad [1214.3] Cerb: because you want that very clear peak ideally you want all your track over here [1218.46] Cerb: and there's an outlying gate half a mile away just one gate with your time um oh no it's him [1224.78] Jack: yeah i i invited you a little um your little stray alley cat you know i was going to ask [1233.02] Stephen: while we're on the video thing is is there a solution to record all the racers feeds because [1238.3] Stephen: when i looked at the dcl footage i've looked at all this other stuff and they go through and [1242.94] Stephen: i think oh look at the quad racing and i look and it's just an hour and a half of them talking to [1247.66] Stephen: these guys and looking at the sponsorship and fancy video feeds and there's like 30 seconds [1253.82] Frank: of actual race footage in the middle are you talking about frank's magic box well the magic [1262.06] Frank: box that jack built yeah that's we've we've got our own solution for that problem but i'm interested [1268.54] Curry: to see what what service has come yeah i tend to find they don't show dvr footage because most of the [1275.9] Stephen: time it's really unwatchable for uh oh any audience right there might be fascinated that looks awesome [1286.22] Cerb: so that is um do you know the ishin pro 58 goggle module yeah yeah that's six of those [1294.46] Cerb: and then you know that you know that little thing you can put on the side of your dji goggles and [1298.22] Cerb: then plug an analog module into it yep they're all sitting on top of those so there's six of those [1305.98] Cerb: uh 3d printed box that i designed um some antennas provided by our sponsors on mantek [1312.3] Cerb: thank you on mantek uh and yeah you plug your cool you plug your video out into each of them [1319.98] Cerb: they go into weirdly uh a cctv box all right plugged in the cctv cameras uh the toast rack [1329.42] Cerb: yeah that's a problem that you have is pal and ntsc cameras oh if you've got your cctv box can [1339.02] Cerb: generally do one or the other so you have to have six pal to ntsc converters so you've got one in [1345.18] Cerb: every feed and yeah and then put them all into obs studio and drag them around it when when i was [1351.74] Wyntrblue: tiffing with uh last year he spent maybe four weeks designing and printing this thing that's [1358.46] Wyntrblue: become the toast rack and it's just been it's like i've made a little tiny tweak you'd be like [1362.78] Wyntrblue: where but no i've got this bit and then you're putting another one and then another one and it [1367.42] Wyntrblue: was it was like a minor obsession for you you also look awesome but i was wondering if anyone [1373.26] Stephen: had thought about just buying a bunch of these cheaper usb things and plugging them in then [1378.14] Frank: i do know someone who has tried that um but unfortunately at least with the version that [1383.74] Frank: they had at the time um the actual usb devices would show up with identical [1393.02] Stephen: serial numbers so you couldn't that sounds like a quality product to me yeah yeah that's the [1399.02] Stephen: issue in rock geo too for anyone that wants to burn identity this is what gaff was doing yeah or um [1404.54] Curry: um binary thingy what's it just binary froth no using this gaff don't worry gavin needs a van [1414.22] Cerb: your actual killer with that is don't mention the van sorry sir bruce your actual killer with that [1420.46] Cerb: is usb bandwidth because a usb bus can only transfer so much data if you put four of those [1427.98] Stephen: on a usb bus it's full they're only usb too if you put it on a usb 3 hub you'd be off to the races [1435.26] Stephen: try it i might just i use this all the time by the way for configuring quads on the bench so i [1442.3] Stephen: just put it on a monitor and i haven't had a go like i'm on site monitor too many people tried [1448.62] Cerb: it and said no just you fair enough i could believe it's crap because it is an issue in [1452.54] Cerb: product and it is very i think if you actually i mean we tend to use laptops because nobody wants [1457.18] Cerb: to cart a pc out to the field um but i reckon if you actually had like a midi tower case and [1463.1] Cerb: you put a load of usb cards in it um but then i don't know how saturated the pc i bus would get [1468.7] Stephen: so it's an interesting experiment i might just buy a couple of them and see what happens and see if [1473.18] Stephen: they do just explode and i can't use two at the same time because they just clone the same usb [1478.3] Curry: uh serial i suppose to quote sir bruce earlier will it scale though will it scale like eight [1485.58] Wyntrblue: see what happens that's where it comes in just just project and nice and cheap so what happens [1492.78] Stephen: with dji capture is anyone even doing dji racing or do you just give people a finger really yes and [1499.02] Stephen: oh yes i see there's a mention of dji on the web page for rotor hazard yes so if you're [1505.1] Cerb: racing in a british qualifying event if you if you join the bdra uh and you're going to truck [1511.58] Cerb: around the country with us flying at different tracks every weekend and building up your your [1516.06] Cerb: points uh towards the championship at the end of the year then his analog that's it because um [1522.94] Cerb: dji kind of came along and bdra looked at it and said okay we need to figure out how we [1527.82] Cerb: we can roll this in and we can start doing uh digital races uh and then the coof hit so [1535.02] Cerb: nobody could leave the house let alone try and run a run a race and figure out how dji works so [1540.38] Stephen: nobody was sitting on their bench for the entire lockdown looking at the problem i don't believe [1545.5] Cerb: you well you can do that on your bench but it's only real when there's six of you in a field [1550.78] Cerb: interfering with each other and then you plug your content that's not racing actually [1556.86] Curry: something different from racing i think that's that's my experience [1560.86] Curry: people interfering each other in a field sounds like something else [1565.74] Frank: my uh absolute experience of any fpv event is is nothing is real until everyone is there [1572.94] Frank: because it doesn't matter how you can have a bunch of you sitting around testing every possible [1579.1] Frank: scenario you can come up with still there'll be more when there's everyone there they'll come [1584.14] Frank: up with something else and things will start interfering and it all goes horribly wrong [1591.98] Stephen: and they'll be like i'm definitely on race one and everyone else be like you are not on race one [1596.22] Frank: yeah yeah but the thing is you don't even need there to be someone doing anything wrong you [1601.18] Frank: don't need to be anything actually going wrong you just need enough races to suspect that something [1608.3] Frank: is affecting their race their their feed and and the whole event is is [1616.62] Cerb: we can deal with that though we can deal with that i mean going back to what you were saying [1620.46] Cerb: it's absolutely true i've run countless races in the living room much to my wife's joy [1627.58] Cerb: it's not until you take all you know i get the folding tables out and i set all the both [1633.42] Cerb: all three of the laptops up and i'll run through a race and and it'll be absolutely fine you take [1638.78] Cerb: it out to the field 36 people turn up that paid their money and won a race and the timer will stop [1645.18] Cerb: tracking r8 for reasons that only it understands that's what that sounds like sunday yeah that's [1651.34] Cerb: exactly what happens you know but if somebody is chucking out um like 10 million gigawatts [1659.34] Cerb: six channels at once um i actually have uh so you saw inside the red hazard box you've got the [1665.18] Cerb: arduino nano and the rx 5808 i have um one of that in a box so one node in a box with a proper [1674.14] Cerb: antenna and i've got a piece of python code that draws a graph it tunes the channel up by three [1681.58] Cerb: takes an rssi goes up by three takes an rssi and it will then just draw you a chart and you can get [1687.74] Cerb: all six pilots to stand in front of you and plug in and you'll see six nice peaks that are all [1693.18] Cerb: roughly the same height unless someone's absolutely blasting and then their peak will be off the charts [1698.7] Cerb: and you go right you're disqualified past the hammer um so i gotta say when we the graph [1708.14] Wyntrblue: watching the graph change is actually like really really fun like i've spent like a good hour just [1712.94] Wyntrblue: glaring at it on sunday it's like oh pretty because it changes because it's running all [1718.06] Wyntrblue: the time and as people fly around the track it you can see it getting higher and lower and [1726.54] Jack: yeah don't encourage frank you'll make a spreadsheet he will oh yeah i've i've [1734.06] Frank: gone past spreadsheets now no no having having spent the past few months being forced to do [1739.9] Cerb: loads of stuff with actual code code is the future we had a guy on sunday um so one of the heats like [1749.58] Cerb: heat three or something everybody you've got came back after their race but my video was [1754.46] Cerb: awful it was really terrible right okay before you start your next heat everybody comes stand [1758.62] Cerb: in front of race control and plug in and i get them to plug in one at a time so one plugs in [1763.42] Cerb: there's your peak no it's one plugs in there's your peak third guy plugged in and he peaked [1768.38] Cerb: he had his main peak but then every other every other frequency went up about half [1775.18] Cerb: there was something wrong with these vtx and the only way you can know that is with that piece of [1779.26] Cerb: kit and and basically he retired that drone for the day and had to fly a different one i'm just [1784.3] Stephen: imagining you getting them all lined up and like playing the countdown music or something while [1788.46] Wyntrblue: you're doing this while you're analyzing the peaks you're out [1800.14] Cerb: um but then um so another thing to to follow up on because you said lies is dji yes rotor has [1805.98] Stephen: to contract dji hmm have you ever had enough people who want to race with dji turn up because [1812.3] Stephen: you can't really do analog and dji because it'll just leave static all over the analog even if you [1817.58] Stephen: distance the channels it it just makes a mess of it and i've i've seen it firsthand um most we've [1822.86] Stephen: managed you've had just dji like five or six dji pilots all turn up to race not had that yet i'm [1830.3] Cerb: looking forward to it because i think it'll be probably possible so there's some guys in the [1835.34] Cerb: states with the rotor hazard say they've done it with five digit wise we've run analog dji mixed [1842.94] Cerb: if you if you set your channels up cleverly you can mix um the worst that we had was the analog [1849.18] Cerb: pilots said they'd got some faint horizontal lines yeah faint is very that's a nice way of putting [1856.06] Stephen: it the way i was standing about 30 foot away from the the guy flying dji and i had like strike out [1861.18] Stephen: straight through my image and every now and then it would just decide not to give me a frame [1865.1] Frank: and i'm running like rapid fire it's because if you've if you've got your uh your analog pilots [1870.86] Frank: on 25 milliwatts what about the the digital dji pilots like because i mean they they can turn it [1876.94] Frank: down out like they're 50 megabits per second and however many milliwatts because you can turn dji [1883.26] Stephen: down to 25 well that's okay you have to go out of your way to unlock it to get more than 25 if you [1888.94] Stephen: say i'm in the uk and you pluck in your your vista it's going to put you on 25 unless you fart around [1894.62] Stephen: and put these little text files on the unit to lift it yeah right yeah so restrictions [1900.62] Wyntrblue: four channels by default in the uk yeah yeah if you're in other countries and you're yeah [1906.06] Wyntrblue: uk you're limited to four channels at 25 milliwatts um fortunately they thought about this and so so [1912.3] Wyntrblue: when you travel to places like america you can unlock it using a text file with the number one [1917.5] Wyntrblue: in it um which gives you access to any milliwattage you want and uh all eight of the available [1923.58] Wyntrblue: channels and then there's 50 megabits mode at which point don't fire it you get four channels [1928.7] Stephen: it basically 50 megabits choose through two 25 megabit channels that's all it's doing it's taking [1934.46] Stephen: two channels and joining them and if you want to get 1200 you have to then put something on the [1938.38] Stephen: goggles for some reason you unlock everything on the actual air unit but then if you want to go to [1943.82] Stephen: 1200 milliwatt you do this thing on the goggles i gotta say i've never had a need to do that [1950.22] Wyntrblue: well i've been flying DJI for like two years i've never had a need to go that high i've never thought [1954.62] Stephen: that is way too cool that air unit it's just not hot enough i need to put more heat to it [1961.66] Stephen: i want to see it glow [1965.02] Stephen: i want a cherry red to match all the rest of the quad on my color scheme forget leds [1969.9] Frank: we're just gonna have like overheated air units and when i plug in i want to sterilize myself [1978.46] Frank: this episode was recorded in front of a live online audience downloaded and edited to make [1983.02] Frank: sense when it played audio only censored to please the itunes people hosted on the internet [1988.14] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider downloaded playing on your device and is now [1992.38] Frank: playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons consider joining them and you'll also get other [1997.9] Frank: online benefits find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out the other thing [2004.38] Wyntrblue: about racing it is is it's got to be the dvr footage though and that that from where i'm [2009.34] Wyntrblue: saying that that's what really lets down analog racing is because the footage you get is just [2014.22] Wyntrblue: shocking dvr and obviously with dji and especially with the stuff the open source project that [2020.54] Wyntrblue: allows you to get the video out with a simple hdmi input you can capture all that you can capture [2027.9] Wyntrblue: all that video in glorious hd and i think is why those those race drones they had these honking [2033.34] Stephen: great was the dcl with honking great seven inch drones and they had like a gopro mounted right at [2038.46] Stephen: the nose of the thing right by the fbv camera and of course they're not going to do a live broadcast [2043.34] Stephen: but they can do a mash up after the race and take all those gopro feeds and and do an 8-up or [2049.34] Stephen: whatever of those gopro feeds but yeah you're right like plugging in a usb c into everyone's [2054.78] Stephen: goggles and running those all into a pie it's it's a doddle the video is already encoded so [2059.66] Stephen: it's just much easier in dealing with analog video it's coming it's definitely coming there's [2064.86] Cerb: a few of us playing with it in the background um we've we've trialed it and we do practice on [2070.7] Cerb: friday nights um and i generally lug the laptop and all the time and gear out so if you look on [2075.9] Cerb: the killer quads channel you'll see some friday night and monday night practices um where we're [2081.02] Cerb: streaming um and the the biggest area i think that um pretty much all of us in the uk when [2090.22] Cerb: we're streaming races the biggest thing we fall down on is we don't tell the human stories [2095.9] Cerb: you can put the the six feeds up on the screen and you can put all the timing data up and you [2100.54] Cerb: can but it's only going to be watched by people that absolutely want to watch it it it it fails [2106.78] Cerb: why what i refer to as the wife test you know you can put the formula one on and generally [2115.5] Cerb: people that aren't massive formula one fans will be okay they'll watch it they'll get some enjoyment [2120.54] Cerb: from it because the commentators will give you those human stories and that and they'll they'll [2125.18] Cerb: give you the jeopardy and and they'll tell you oh he's having to change tires because of this [2130.06] Cerb: and generally as race directors uh and and streamers at races we don't have the resources [2137.42] Cerb: to really get into those human stories i wish i had enough spare people to to hand them a an ndi [2144.54] Cerb: video camera that's linked you know by ip and send them into the pits and start talking to people and [2150.86] Cerb: you know and and really start commentating about oh you know he's two seconds behind he needs this [2155.9] Cerb: to get into the next round you know those real human stories we we don't have the capacity to [2160.62] Cerb: do those yet but it's coming there's a lot of us out here that are like pushing towards that you [2165.34] Cerb: know so you think we're going to see quad pundits soon i i would hope i'll be one of them i think [2173.9] Curry: that's the only way to make quad footage i i still don't think it will pass the wife test but vaguely [2180.94] Curry: watchable because the the other thing with dvr it's not just a fact it's analog footage and by the [2185.9] Curry: way do you notice how many professional pilots don't set up their cameras right the amount of [2189.34] Curry: them that are called run cam is off the scale foxy yeah even that's good yeah even with like um [2197.1] Curry: good gopro footage real like super pilots they're taking such lines that don't make any sense to [2203.42] Curry: people it's almost like you need to expand the size of the racetrack so it's less technical in [2209.5] Curry: order to make it more audience family so that's kind of where the likes of i think dcl haven't [2213.74] Curry: really watched any of it where they do these weird like cave systems and stuff and then they cut it [2218.62] Curry: together into a more sort of professional package sort of works where it would be really really [2223.58] Curry: difficult to do that sort of thing that i even make it entertaining in my rarely humble opinion [2229.02] Cerb: it's it's drl it's drl have really it's got the closest to actually nailing the package on [2236.46] Cerb: presentation and you know nice graphics and you know something that i'm gonna start to do [2244.38] Cerb: is at the start of races when they're all sitting on the blocks and you're waiting to get the race [2249.34] Cerb: going i want to have a head and shoulder shot of each pilot overlaid overlaid in their feet [2254.38] Cerb: so you start to know who these people are and and again it's that phrase human stories i think [2260.54] Cerb: drl really nailed that was kind of and until they went the van over route i kind of kind of [2267.1] Cerb: feel like they went a bit wwe with that like had a like a cartoon villain which was van over [2275.18] Frank: but you know yeah i mean drl like i went to the the alley pally one and like being in the audience [2282.7] Frank: there really gave me you know no left me in no doubt that it's absolutely that that end product [2291.5] Frank: is of the the show is their primary goal that's that's their primary focus that is what everything [2298.86] Frank: else is aimed for like we don't really care about the audience there we don't really care about the [2304.94] Frank: races or the racing or the anything everything is 100% is this making something that someone can [2313.1] Frank: watch you know on the tv that's that is their absolute focus on it um and you know like you're [2321.26] Frank: saying that's actually results in something that you can actually watch um because the the other [2327.82] Frank: you know even what spectating at a at a real event like without watching the the feeds [2335.26] Frank: i mean it's it's quite hard to keep track of like who's racing now what's going on [2340.62] Frank: because you know a race is only a couple of minutes and it's 30 yeah so you've you've [2347.1] Frank: haven't got a lot of time to really get ahead around it yeah you have to really be infused [2352.06] Cerb: but you have to really want to know um and i think if you if you're someone that goes to the [2358.46] Cerb: races and you kind of move in those circles and you start to put faces to names uh and and get [2365.42] Cerb: to know the guys that are racing and you know some of the personal stories and then it becomes [2370.14] Cerb: more interesting but i mean the first race i ever went to is like i don't know anybody [2375.1] Cerb: um there's no it's not like we can afford to put beak like 60 foot screens up so people can watch [2380.62] Cerb: so yeah you're watching a youtube stream on your phone you're watching these things whizz around [2384.62] Cerb: i'm like yeah this is dull as dirt this is not interesting at all yeah i think it depends who [2390.38] Stephen: you're appealing to though that sports is very much a way to split people because the typical [2395.74] Stephen: sports thing is about cheering for your your team your guys yeah you're feeling some investment in [2402.38] Stephen: it whereas i think a lot of quad pilots are kind of more the traditional technologists cut where [2406.54] Stephen: they're like and which one flies better is that flying better i wonder did he fail that because [2412.38] Stephen: of this because he had the wrong motors because it was too heavy or did he time it wrong and [2418.22] Stephen: it's interesting to see sports hit technology quite as violently as this because you've got [2423.18] Stephen: people who are who are real nerds and geeks and proud of it and they don't give a crap about like [2428.46] Stephen: being the tough guy and you know running around the field but this is still now becoming a sport [2434.7] Stephen: which puts them in the same place as the the tough guys running around fields when you when [2439.26] Cerb: you're sitting behind the camera and um i noticed pucker saying something about arias on sunday [2444.14] Cerb: thank you for that it was um good fun um but as the as the kind of producer of a show what frank [2452.94] Cerb: was saying is completely true you kind of want somebody to to lose their and throw their transmitter [2458.7] Cerb: across the field you know because it's great telly and um we we have to kind of figure out how [2465.82] Cerb: we don't want that really happening but we have to figure out those kind of personal sort and bring [2469.1] Cerb: it to the people and bring it to the public watching because we want people to get inside [2473.74] Cerb: you know interested and excited in the sport and you know it's it's a way we can combat the whole [2479.34] Cerb: you know he throw airport crap is yeah put it on the telly make it an amazing sport and and [2485.5] Cerb: that people sit there and go wow oh you know it's on tomorrow i've got to tune into that it's [2490.78] Cerb: amazing watch these guys and oh you know i'm going to be shouting for um brett cole any killer [2497.58] Wyntrblue: cross pilot for any killer cross pilot that's the way to do it i'm just wondering does it [2503.34] Stephen: become about the kind of wrestling thing where you've got heels and people like this and you've [2507.82] Stephen: got to have a villain the whole time and it's less about the actual the event itself and more [2514.06] Cerb: about the characters like i hope we don't go that way i hope we don't ever do what dr l did [2518.86] Cerb: and go for that you know the van over thing which i really kind of feel like they would [2523.02] Cerb: they were looking for to make him the the baddie um but we we've never you know we're in our [2530.46] Cerb: infancy we're a grassroots sport we've not really gone down that route of finding out who these guys [2536.06] Curry: are and finding out a bit more about them i don't think i do kind of see quad racing more more [2541.26] Curry: akin to the e-sports stuff which has has really taken off and there's some serious money in there [2546.78] Curry: and they're managing to do a similar thing where you've essentially got a bunch of guys [2551.1] Curry: doing this on a keyboard looking really intently in a monitor by the way [2559.26] Curry: yeah but you you saw you saw the tops of the fingers okay doing this [2564.06] Curry: with a keyboard being being really intense and yet they're managing to do somehow uh not that [2571.02] Curry: i watch it but i've watched a bunch of like netflix documentaries about it um interesting [2575.74] Curry: commentary and sort of really getting into it and people are really sort of behind the teams and [2581.18] Curry: individuals but they are sort of telling that human story again and i think that what you're [2585.26] Curry: saying is really key about about making the whole thing more invested in in individual [2591.18] Curry: people's not just the fact there's a quad going around really quick it's it's a bit too solid [2595.74] Wyntrblue: with your eyes i've got to say like watching the race well at the racing on sunday i was like [2601.1] Wyntrblue: i saw them all take off and now they're just blurs moving around the track and i couldn't [2605.66] Wyntrblue: tell which one was which and whose was whose and it doesn't help if everyone flies with the same [2610.54] Wyntrblue: color props i just want to say please use different colored props leds yeah but it's kind [2618.3] Cerb: of two it's two-sided as well because the pilots couldn't care less they want to get out and they [2622.22] Cerb: want to go and they want to go racing and enjoy their day and and they do you know it's a really [2628.38] Cerb: great sport to be involved with they couldn't care less about me sitting in a gazebo in the corner [2633.1] Cerb: trying to figure out what the the human interest angle is so was it the rl that literally had those [2639.9] Curry: big quads and they all had different leds and all the pilots were dressed in the right color and [2644.06] Curry: all the fat sharks and the radios that worked didn't it because you can like oh that he's that [2648.86] Curry: guy and he's go on you don't know who it is i was going to say it works those quads are probably [2654.14] Stephen: like a thousand pounds for a quad and can you make a pilot who's already doing drone racing [2659.1] Stephen: spend a thousand pounds for their special league series quad and drl and that's how much they weigh [2665.9] Cerb: as well but drl drl brought all the quads so in dcl um you you take your own quad in drl [2676.62] Cerb: they were turning up with 500 quads that they had built all to the same spec where's the money [2683.02] Frank: come from well for that that was literally that they were you know selling the you know the the [2692.46] Frank: actual the advertising the product the the show to broadcast companies um their sponsors like [2700.78] Cerb: allianz and bmw and you know big hitters yeah yeah absolutely so fundamentally like all sports [2708.46] Frank: it becomes about where you can get the advertising yeah to but but there's you know i don't think you [2716.22] Frank: have to go full drl to make something that's more compelling like if you if you do i mean [2723.58] Frank: what we tried to do at the the mini air show events was with the the team the team racing [2729.66] Frank: you know we were trying to kind of slow things down a bit so that it was a bit easier for people to [2736.06] Frank: get around you know you can sit there and watch around for 10 minutes and it's going to be the [2740.06] Frank: same people and you're going to watch them kind of playing off of each other and there's these [2744.46] Frank: because it's a team and you've got like these big team names and like some of them wearing costumes [2749.18] Frank: and so that kind of makes things a bit easier to follow as well um having the sort of um you know [2754.94] Frank: the colored spots and trying to like suggest that people do try and keep their their props and their [2760.46] Frank: leds to the colors of where they're going to be sitting for most of those rounds like that that [2765.82] Frank: you know which we were trying to kind of make something sort of a bit easier for the people [2771.02] Frank: who were there to watch i mean it would definitely have benefited from basically [2778.7] Frank: that same problem of having someone there who can commentate in the same way that that Niall did at [2785.02] Frank: the the rotor riot event uh rotor racing events um and you know who who knows enough of the community [2795.58] Frank: um and the other one uh craig films uh he you know he's he's another good commentator who knows [2801.1] Frank: enough of the community to be able to kind of have a few jokes and sort of explain you know who [2806.7] Frank: people are and who's like the the front runner and and you know who's the kind of bit of a joker [2812.06] Frank: and be able to like you say bring sort of that human interest into it and and i think that is [2816.54] Frank: important to be able to have something that's you know you know passing that wife test getting you [2822.94] Frank: know just someone who you know maybe is just a model aircraft enthusiast who happens to be walking [2830.62] Frank: past some drone racing at western park or something and just kind of sees that oh this is some [2841.82] Frank: something that has a narrative yeah exactly um and it has a bit of a story a bit of fun [2849.18] Frank: um and it's it's understandable like you're not focusing on trying to follow it around a track [2856.3] Frank: and go wow that's just insane i i can't relate to how quickly you're getting that around there [2862.78] Wyntrblue: do you know what i've just i just does anyone you're old enough to remember um [2868.86] Wyntrblue: the battle robots things i can't remember yeah [2873.02] Wyntrblue: robot wars they brought that back recently didn't they did they oh god really so yeah [2879.82] Wyntrblue: who's good by cray cars what we need is is drone wars people have tried [2889.74] Stephen: yeah they did some where they had to knock each other out the sky and there were people with with [2894.3] Stephen: nets around their quads and stuff i think peter's all had a video where he did yes a drone he was [2899.74] Frank: building in yeah yeah so that was game of drones over in the netherlands who again we were going [2905.74] Frank: to have over at mini air show at one point when events were still happening um and when we still [2912.54] Frank: had a venue um and then the the other side of it was there were the there's been a couple of attempts [2921.66] Frank: to have a another tv show where they'd get a couple of teams to almost scrap heap challenge together [2928.38] Frank: a drone into a particular situation so that i think the pilot was about um i think a sort of [2936.3] Frank: fire situation fire and rescue situation um but there you know there's there's been a couple of [2942.78] Cerb: attempts and you know i think there's loads of fun things we we can do and we should do to make it [2948.62] Cerb: and i i should say i'm i'm only kind of saying this stuff because i want other people to to see [2954.7] Cerb: what we do and think it's amazing yeah like we did um on one of our whoop events um back when [2960.86] Cerb: we were allowed to do whoop events we did uh the the 24 minutes to whoop so instead of the 24 hours [2968.14] Cerb: a limon the 24 minutes of whoop because a whoop battery lasts like what three minutes so we had [2974.06] Cerb: teams of four or five pilots um and they would go out and and do as many laps as they could before [2980.62] Cerb: the life i died they'd have to land in the pits next time plugs he's weeping and out they went [2985.02] Cerb: and the more kind of crazy stuff like that we do the more fun it is i think i mean do you do mad [2990.3] Cerb: things like um i've never done it but i've seen a lucky dip for props so you have to put your [2996.38] Cerb: hand in the bag and pull out four random props put them on your quad and then race which i fancy [3004.06] Frank: you go that looks kind of bonkers yeah but yeah i think that that's the sort of thing that if you've [3011.34] Frank: if you've got a format that is working to include the general public or like non-pilots [3019.5] Frank: then that kind of thing is something that you can kind of throw into there and and make it even [3025.34] Cerb: more fun as long as the pilots are still having fun with it then happy days yeah yeah absolutely [3031.74] Wyntrblue: that's the that's the bottom line is is it's supposed to be fun yeah if it's not fun stop [3037.34] Wyntrblue: it yeah when the fun stops to stop exactly i mean that's one of the reasons i don't race [3043.98] Wyntrblue: is because i get too stressed i'm too angry and speaking of not fun did you see the [3051.18] Stephen: did you see the um academic analysis of drone racing yeah perfect laps very cool [3059.9] Stephen: i've forgotten who it was ah some guy who'd been a drone um kind of top three in the world [3067.02] Stephen: was it gab gab something or other the ai drones they finally got yeah yeah they they were like [3075.02] Stephen: knocking point eight of a second off gab's time was pretty impressive and they'd figured out not [3079.98] Stephen: just to take the absolute fastest approach but how to like conserve momentum through turns and [3085.26] Cerb: everything pretty neat that's a that's a really important thing to learn actually when you when [3089.58] Cerb: you're racing is is sometimes it's about that line and actually if you swing out wider to carry [3095.1] Cerb: more speed through the gate then then you're overall quicker um i i've done a fair bit of [3100.7] Cerb: track racing in in my youth um and i still do it now if i could afford it um and actually racing [3107.34] Cerb: lines and and carrying speed is is stuff that a lot of guys in the drone racing haven't quite [3114.06] Cerb: figured out the real quick guys you can tell that they have and you watch the dvr back and you see [3118.94] Cerb: how they're they're swinging out before they hit the gate because then they can carry all that [3122.46] Stephen: speed through it down the straight they're not looking to go through the gate stop and turn [3126.7] Cerb: no they've thought ahead that's kind of a big penny drop for me i i i think a few other pilots [3132.94] Cerb: have found that as well when i first started racing so and i don't just race i freestyle as [3137.5] Cerb: well it's all drone flying it doesn't matter whether you're flying a bando or flying gates [3142.22] Cerb: just go and fly there's it's not two camps okay go fly it doesn't matter what you're doing [3147.74] Jack: um you know we need to divide and argue and squabble amongst ourselves [3153.26] Cerb: we can still manage that with driving to be us against the news of the world not us against [3157.42] Cerb: each other um but i discovered i kind of had an epiphany um about 12 months ago and i suddenly [3165.82] Cerb: started flying between gates because what i was doing was i was flying through a gate and then [3170.46] Cerb: there'd be like a mental reset and then i'd fly to the next gate and fly through it and then [3174.86] Cerb: and my brain would kind of reset for each one and then a lot of people said this the same thing [3180.78] Stephen: you kind of suddenly start flowing yeah yeah there was another paper where they actually [3185.82] Stephen: did gaze analysis they they looked at the pupils of the pilots and tracked them around the image [3191.18] Stephen: and they found out that when a pilot a pro pilot was flying through a gate they weren't looking at [3195.66] Stephen: the gate they were flying through they were looking at the one after even before they went [3199.1] Stephen: through a gate they weren't looking at that gate they were looking at the one following that [3203.26] Stephen: so they'd already started to line up and their gaze there was like uh vectors they'd planned [3208.62] Stephen: like the course of the drone the angle that the the next gate was and the gaze of the pilot was [3214.06] Stephen: like somewhere between where their drone was heading and the next gate they were already [3217.82] Stephen: already kind of looking glancing off towards that side before they even hit the gate before [3222.54] Cerb: that's a great piece of advice uh pro pilot gave me i couldn't do corkscrews so when you kind of [3227.98] Cerb: go through a gate around and through the one next to it and i just could not do them i could not do [3233.34] Cerb: them and somebody said to me where are you looking right um i don't actually know i don't [3239.1] Cerb: like look at the next gate and when you suddenly start focusing on where you're going instead of [3245.58] Cerb: where you've been suddenly i could do corkscrews nice that must be a great feeling uh yeah i still [3254.7] Jack: did them very slowly though because i'm old none of us are faulting anyone ever see like [3263.74] Jack: yeah um is it is anyone ever seen um uh top bsm thomas uh like with his like stick cameras like [3274.62] Jack: there he's always like just the far extremes of the travel of the gimbal as he as he tears [3283.34] Jack: around that i just can't get my head around it yeah but a lot of races are running 400 [3288.3] Stephen: degree a second rates they're not running a thousand degree a second yeah they don't need [3294.06] Stephen: to do spin they just need to turn and hit the next gate there's never like go through a gate [3299.98] Stephen: and immediately like 180 and then 180 and then 180 180 it's just yeah so my freestyle quads [3308.06] Cerb: are i think um either on default or a thousand my race quads are down on 400 [3314.78] Cerb: because you don't want that twitchiness counter productive that gimbal is like [3321.9] Stephen: that gimbal is like your mouse pad and you want the comfortable area you can use and use all of [3327.26] Stephen: it right so that you can get precision for young viewers a mouse pad is something you [3333.18] Curry: use to put your computer mouse on when you're moving it around so when you don't have a touch [3338.7] Cerb: screen yes the other thing that's really counterintuitive thing is if you're doing [3346.7] Cerb: that kind of like a corkscrew move again do a corkscrew or a split s or something like that [3352.22] Cerb: you back off you come off the throttle and make the turn and actually that's that's not what you [3356.86] Cerb: want to do you want more throttle it's a little bit like an f1 car so if you drive an f1 car [3362.62] Cerb: slowly you lose all the ground effect you lose all the the the aero grip and you slide off and [3369.5] Cerb: and quad racing is the same thing you want that power you have to overcome the the temptation [3375.02] Cerb: to back off the throttle as you go into the corkscrew you got more power so that you're [3378.62] Cerb: getting more grip and then you you make the maneuver with with your other inputs [3385.5] Frank: so what when's when's your next events coming up or when where can people find some events if [3390.3] Cerb: they do want to go and have a go at some racing well you you've just missed uh the biggest killer [3396.54] Cerb: quads race of the year um which is the the jim givney memorial race which we run every year [3402.3] Cerb: so our first ever race was with the mx5 owner's club because i was on the committee of the owner's [3407.98] Cerb: club at the time and they said do you do this drone racing thing we're doing our summer national [3412.94] Cerb: there'll be six thousand mx5s in the car park do you want to come and do a race [3417.02] Cerb: show people you know a bit of spectator sport yeah of course i will so that's why i got into [3421.58] Cerb: rotor hazard because i couldn't afford a lap rf and i i brought some forza pop-up football goals [3428.78] Cerb: and i built a rotor hazard and i threw it all together and i stuck it up on ifpv uh and um [3437.9] Cerb: yeah it was great like six pilots came and it was all good and they they all sat down and i was a [3443.74] Cerb: big fan of drl at the time um and um one of the pilots sits down and i haven't really like looked [3452.22] Cerb: at them you know had much time to chat with them because i've been running around sorting stuff out [3457.82] Cerb: and this guy sits down for the first heat and he goes into his bag and he pulls out his red fat [3463.18] Cerb: sharks all right oh dear and it was uh ad one um he was he was in drl at the time and i'm like [3475.18] Cerb: oh crap i have no idea what i'm doing and i'm in the field and i've got a drl pilot [3482.14] Cerb: i'm not really sure what i'm doing um and and jim jim gibney really good friend of ours uh [3487.58] Cerb: who sadly passed away he was there he did the pilot check-ins that day uh so um since he passed [3494.78] Cerb: away we um yeah he we we run one race a year in his honor and that was on sunday just gone [3502.46] Cerb: we had 36 pilots uh but um i have heard that the mx5 owner's club might be back out and doing an [3510.46] Cerb: event and they'd uh like to revisit so we might be doing another we might be doing another exhibition [3516.62] Cerb: race this year don't know um next year we will definitely be doing a lot more races we kind of [3523.5] Cerb: didn't quite bounce back from the coop as quickly as we hoped uh if you do want to get into the [3529.74] Cerb: racing ifpv is the website to go and look out bdra is the website to go and look at uh there's an [3535.9] Cerb: event the next british qualifying event is over western super railway that's on the 14th uh that's [3544.62] Cerb: being run by westland's drone events who are fantastic guys they run really good events uh [3549.82] Cerb: will i run another outdoor this year i hope to hope to it'll either be the mx5 one um or something [3557.26] Cerb: else that i might have i'm planning that i can't really talk quite in case it doesn't work but yeah [3563.1] Cerb: keep your eye on the ifpv website you'll you'll see all the calendar there and also you'll see [3567.34] Cerb: everybody's standings you can see you know who's winning who's where on the league table i think [3571.74] Stephen: i'm 62 in the uk at the minute pretty good um i saw the jim gibney memorial race come up in my [3581.1] Stephen: feed uh for youtube a while ago so i just dropped a link in the chat if anyone wants to check that [3585.26] Frank: out i'm just gonna have a look at the ifpv league table but it's all now all now hidden behind the [3591.34] Frank: login so i won't do that that's a way to discourage people it's not good i'll have a word with druid [3601.9] Frank: and find out why that's the case yeah um what else was i gonna say oh last my last question just [3611.02] Frank: because i want to know personally because imd6 is like the standard these six channels work happily [3617.82] Frank: with each other for reasons that we don't have enough time to go into intermodular distortion [3623.58] Frank: well yeah but that doesn't really help if you don't know what that means um but um [3628.22] Cerb: um what do you do with because you can explain that really really quickly you're fine if there [3635.34] Cerb: if there are two pilots on two frequencies as soon as you add a third frequency the resultant [3640.22] Cerb: output of those three frequencies creates another frequency so that plus that will create a little [3645.5] Cerb: bulge in the middle uh where that where they meet and overlap so you have to pick your frequencies [3650.38] Cerb: not only spaced apart but so they don't hit the bulges where they interfere with each other [3655.58] Frank: so with with those playing music you've got uh it's usually imd6e i think is r1 r2 f2 f4 [3669.1] Frank: r7 and r8 um and so how does that much match up with dji like how do you which ones do you say [3679.74] Frank: though you dji you can have those two do you say like r1 and r2 and now dji or how does that work [3686.3] Cerb: if there's a beautiful graphic somewhere there is but there's a fantastic chart that was actually [3692.38] Cerb: put together by the lead developer of the rotor hazard project um and it sometimes shows up on [3698.06] Cerb: web pages not attributed to him which is a bit annoying um yeah yeah and basically if i've got [3704.54] Cerb: one pilot if i've got one pilot turns up with dji then he's going up the r8 end because because i [3711.34] Cerb: know that i can um set the rotor hazard to a dji channel up that end and everybody else can can [3717.58] Cerb: hide down the r1 r2 end and pretty much we're going to be safe um that's how we arrange it [3723.58] Frank: have you ever had someone turn up with dji who has not put a text file on their on their goggles [3731.66] Frank: because i mean that that limits them to as far as i can tell a no no channels that fit on [3739.58] Cerb: the the biggest the biggest task of a race director um when you're doing a practice event [3745.98] Cerb: definitely um is the new guys that turn up because a new guy turns up and he's on 1.6 gigawatts [3753.34] Cerb: on boss cam b um because you know this has actually happened because when you're new you [3761.58] Cerb: don't go out and fly with other people and it doesn't factor into your thoughts at all [3765.74] Cerb: that you can even change channel um and you rock up you're like hi guys i've come to fly with you [3770.7] Cerb: and you're like right okay what channel are you on i like channel what's what's what's the channel [3774.7] Cerb: so you have to have in your armory the ability to um teach someone how smart audio works and [3782.78] Cerb: generally that's not have it yeah generally that's not been wired up so you need a good mental bank [3787.98] Cerb: uh of uh how many button presses it takes to put a tramp vtx into unlock mode and 25 milliwatts and [3797.74] Cerb: um oh jax [3804.62] Jack: i've just opened a toolbox with look frequency charts and button presses and [3812.14] Frank: dip switches and all sorts yeah but so if someone comes up to you and says i i'm just [3819.34] Frank: sticking to the the standard eu dgi completely locked in channels you go well then it's not [3828.62] Stephen: going to work you can't can't race it can so dgi channels it maps the raceband yeah so [3837.66] Stephen: channels one two three four should be raceband r1 r2 but not the ce ones ce one two three are [3845.1] Frank: within within the the fat shark range but don't match up with the fat shark one so what that's [3851.98] Frank: what i mean is like r1 r2 r7 r8 are not within the c dji channels all right yes you have to do [3860.22] Stephen: the unlock to make it easy to i remember if you have done the unlock then it matches r1 through [3865.58] Stephen: r8 that's seven and eight around for some silly reason who's old enough to remember back in the [3873.26] Cerb: analog days when you used to have colored pegs on board to see who was on what crystal ribbons [3878.78] Cerb: tie the end of your transmitter so if you turn up to a killer quads event you'll be you'll be [3883.82] Cerb: experiencing the race ducks oh no not the race ducks have shows so basically what we what we do [3892.62] Cerb: is um these guys aren't labeled up their new ducks haven't been labeled yet so you want to say [3898.22] Stephen: so that's r1 rubber ducky it's a yellow rubber duck with a little colored outfit and i'm guessing [3904.62] Stephen: the colored outfit implies something for a lot of years they usually have tags on them uh dog tags [3911.5] Cerb: with r1 r2 f2 duck tags r7 r8 if you're holding the r1 duck you're on r1 if you're not holding [3920.46] Stephen: a duck you can't fly you don't have and you put that around your antenna and that detunes it just [3925.26] Cerb: enough yeah so and then if you're not if you you know if it's a practice event so there's no [3932.86] Cerb: structure to it um that's how you can figure out who's on what channel you know there's only six [3937.74] Cerb: channels being used when you stop flying you chuck the duck at someone that that wants to fly they [3943.26] Cerb: go on to that channel and and that was um just the best solution that saved me so many headaches [3950.7] Cerb: um especially with guys that aren't so experienced guys that have been to a lot of races [3956.14] Cerb: just kind of tune into that whole ethos because it's drilled into you the channels and the heats [3961.74] Cerb: and and it's quite structured when a bunch of you turn up to a bando it's lord of the flies you know [3967.66] Cerb: because one guy's going to be on r7 on the 1.2 gigawatts and one guy's on boss can be and one [3972.94] Cerb: goes up you just grab the race ducks and go right that's the channels we're using yep i i have a [3980.78] Frank: slightly over-engineered version of the race ducks that i'm hoping to have working in time for ldo no [3987.82] Frank: so if if that works then i'll i'll show that on the stream if it doesn't everybody that doesn't [3995.82] Curry: race will be acutely aware of i'm just going to turn on screaming screaming streaming okay i'm [4003.02] Curry: unplugging again unplug unplug who plugged in unplug if there's one thing you can't organize [4009.9] Curry: it's three people in a field trying to fly together in less than an hour and by that time [4015.98] Stephen: we've already cracked the quartz anyway so for all of us who are perhaps crap and can maybe just [4021.42] Stephen: hit a gate or two in a simulator are there any bando events coming up any people getting together [4026.86] Stephen: to to fly bandos because i'm in london and to be honest i'm continually surprised this there's [4032.46] Stephen: very few people within reach of me who are going out and flying well there's there's in london [4038.22] Frank: there's the crack palace that's that's the famous one that a lot of people go to it's quite a lot [4044.14] Stephen: charming name i know police station of all things if you know about it absolutely everybody is [4050.94] Cerb: welcome everybody is welcome at race events yeah we had um so we had 36 pilots at the last event [4056.78] Cerb: and the guys who finished at the bottom were doing one or two laps the guys at the top were [4061.26] Cerb: doing eight laps in in the same amount of time but everybody's welcome to come out if you can hit [4066.38] Cerb: a couple of gates and have a good laugh and you know not get too stressed when you crash [4072.22] Stephen: come along give it a go if anything if you just want to hit one gate and gate and power loop it [4076.94] Cerb: again and again and again if you just just power loop the start gate and just keep going over the [4082.06] Cerb: time yeah you'll be fine it's about my speed there's no there is no limitation there's no [4092.22] Cerb: minimum entry requirement come along fly your quad have a good laugh [4095.66] Stephen: oh don't forget to bring sandwiches yeah otherwise it will be lord of the flies [4103.34] Jack: no one wants that anyway on that note i think we are out of time um thank you guys so much [4111.66] Jack: it's been very interesting and uh i've learned a lot i've sat in the corner sir reaver us is that [4119.02] Jack: right close enough so egregious sir egregious um anyway uh you've been joined by better than fluffy [4133.66] Jack: i days now i'm gonna call you that from then on uh we've been talking about lord and overmaster [4139.26] Jack: and uh the person who's running ldo know have we filled up or we out slots uh that's a good point [4146.54] Frank: i will put the sign up link in the description because there are a small handful of slots still [4154.54] Frank: available for our limited capacity event uh mainly due to parking so if you're coming by public [4161.02] Frank: transport you're more likely to get in or carpool exactly are we allowed to carpool [4169.48] Jack: you know the windows open masks on stick them on the roof uh and we've been joined by winter blue [4179.72] Jack: good evening uh fluffy [4185.16] Jack: what's the name of your show again um that you guys so our show is quadratic [4192.2] Jack: quadratic i'm sorry i always forget um uh steven uh belrick thanks everyone sporting a fantastic [4202.76] Stephen: is it tom smith uh shirt fly or die some dude from the states i saw on bardeville show ages ago and [4208.84] Stephen: i got in touch with the guy who did the shirts it's a a guy and his wife who sold these t-shirts [4213.88] Stephen: and it's uh someplace he he actually goes to fly freestyle and he just kind of did a big old uh [4219.96] Jack: show us about it that is awesome and uh we'd be joined by everyone's favorite curry kitten [4226.28] UNKNOWN: goodbye and i've been bright until i fly thank you good night bye telemetry lost
