[69.51] Frank: Kind of go over a bit of what happened and get a bit of a taste of it.

[182.51] Frank: So I think most people managed to not get too wound up by their GPS telling them that they're in the middle of nowhere and it's not the right place to go.

[197.51] Frank: We had fossil staff there who Martin brought along a load of flags and basically a tent.
[209.51] Frank: An enormous shelter.
[211.51] Frank: Coleman shelter.
[213.51] Frank: So not only did we have the sort of clubhouse hut with the wood burning stove and the microwave and everything else that's in there and Wi-Fi.
[224.51] Frank: But we also had the Coleman shelter out on the field.
[227.51] Frank: So thank you very much for fossil staff for bringing those along.
[232.51] Stephen: That was an excellent tent.
[234.51] Stephen: Don't worry about being called out with some showers.
[236.51] Tony: It did rain for a few hours when we got there.
[240.51] Frank: And we also had Menace come along and bring along some lovely goodies.
[245.51] Frank: Martian is sporting the hat wear.
[248.51] Frank: Very nice new version of the hat.
[250.51] Frank: There were some other goodies as well going around which were very useful.
[255.51] Frank: We got some good use out of those.

[262.51] Frank: What did everyone think of?
[264.51] Frank: I mean well I guess who actually because when we first got there like you were saying Tony it was raining a little bit.

[276.51] Frank: Yes that was what Tony was telling us.
[280.51] Tony: Every 15 minutes.
[284.51] Martian: Two hours later you get a little break and then quickly go flying and it starts to rain again.

[291.51] Lurgy: Well we decided to put the tent up, put the shelter up so it would stop raining and that worked pretty much.
[296.51] Frank: Yeah that seemed to work.
[298.51] Stephen: Yeah it seemed I arrived with a bunch of work gates just as the rain had stopped and everyone was starting to fly outside.
[304.51] Frank: Yeah I think we sort of just got to the point where we're starting to get people over to.
[309.51] Frank: I'd given up on being able to fly in the field because it was just raining.
[313.51] Frank: So grab a few people and we went over to a bit the wooded area.
[319.51] Frank: This is actually kind of some farmed woods.
[322.51] Frank: They're all kind of nicely spaced out.
[324.51] Frank: They're all pruned to be really tall and without too much scraggle on them.
[329.51] Frank: So we went out there and the Martian again has this amazing tiny little...
[336.51] Frank: What was that tiny little quad that you brought that everyone was fawning over?
[340.51] Frank: Absolutely telling me.
[342.51] Martian: Little one there. It's a little 65 millimeter reverb which is basically like a warp without the prop guards.
[352.51] Stephen: What motors is that running? Looks a bit chunky for a buck.
[356.51] Martian: Oh wait oh twos.
[358.51] Stephen: Oh.
[359.51] Martian: They're all motors.
[360.51] Martian: Yeah.
[362.51] Martian: It flies a little bit better than a warp.
[365.51] Frank: Yeah because it's a carbon fiber frame as well.
[367.51] Frank: So it looks like it should fly pretty nicely.
[370.51] Martian: You don't get all the funny prop washout stuff which you get with a warp.
[374.51] Martian: So you can dive things and try and pull out but it's massively underpowered.
[380.51] Martian: It's still fun.
[383.51] Frank: What did you think about flying through the woods? Was it any good?
[387.51] Frank: I mean I've tried to fly a little bit around there but I don't have anything like that that would be really good.

[393.51] Martian: I think I only had one flight.
[396.51] Martian: It was good but the range on this I've had no problem with the receiver so I was getting about 34 way in.
[403.51] Martian: It was just dropping up sky but managed to hit a few branches and I think I orbited somebody.

[413.51] Martian: He came for a little wander and I thought okay let's go around him.
[416.51] Martian: Went around him, smacked straight into a tree.
[422.51] Tony: I think Numskull was the traveler that traveled the furthest I think.

[453.51] Frank: Yeah well yeah because that was I mean we like you said we were just out starting to fly some whoops.

[462.51] Frank: We had NJ was flying his OMP M1 helicopter basically in the car park under the trees under the canopy of the trees.

[478.51] Stephen: Looks like there was some crawler footage as well.
[480.51] Frank: Yeah yeah there were some crawlers going around.

[487.51] Frank: So we were all sort of settling in to being okay.
[489.51] Frank: We're going to have to be under the trees out of the out of the rain.
[493.51] Frank: And just as that happened it got sunny again.

[500.51] Stephen: Of course they were all raced out into the middle of the field to try and fly the largest aircraft they brought with them.

[513.51] Tony: Martian is totally disregarding what the Tomahawk was designed for.

[520.51] Tony: Actually it's very very impressive.
[523.51] Tony: The Tomahawk was what is a cruiser and you would like literally ripping it.
[531.51] Frank: I was impressed.
[533.51] Tony: I was impressed with that.
[534.51] Tony: It was a good tune on that.

[537.51] Tony: Nice to see it doing something else rather than just cruising.

[565.51] Tony: Seven inch cruise sort of.

[578.18] Tony: But Martian the fly decided to rip it instead of cruising it.

[594.18] Martian: That's the Cadix the all in one HD.

[610.18] Stephen: That was Jack's yellow LDO plane.
[613.18] Stephen: Made a couple of appearances throughout the day there with various aeronautic display.
[621.18] Stephen: Oddside various crashes.
[624.18] Stephen: Did one very very fast lap before crashing one time when it seemed to be running a little bit heavy.
[634.18] Frank: Yeah.
[635.18] Lurgy: soft drinks.
[640.18] Frank: Yeah so this was the the mini guinea.
[645.18] Frank: Which is a flight test model which is like a twin motor kind of cargo plane.
[652.18] Frank: The kind of thing that Peter St. Paul would have built with flight test a few years ago.
[658.18] Frank: Before he joined flight test.
[660.18] Frank: He was building those things.
[662.18] Stephen: He was strongly influenced by only fools and horses.
[665.18] Frank: But yeah Jack built this for the challenge last year.
[670.18] Frank: Where I sent a box of random stuff to all the hosts.
[680.18] Frank: This was kind of back down in lockdown one.
[684.18] Frank: Where no one could get out.
[686.18] Frank: No one could fly.
[688.18] Frank: Or at least maybe didn't feel like going out because it was a bit of a scary time.
[696.18] Frank: And there wasn't anything coming into review.
[699.18] Frank: There was there was no good news effectively.
[702.18] Frank: So I got someone in the kind of line of sight socks and sandals brigade sort of world.
[709.18] Frank: He sells loads of secondhand models and he ends up with like piles of stuff.
[714.18] Frank: And just magic mystery boxes of rubbish.
[718.18] Frank: And so I got him to send out a box of those to each of the hosts.
[724.18] Frank: And they all built up something.
[726.18] Frank: So the one that kind of won that challenge was Curry's I can't remember what you called it now.
[733.18] Lurgy: You can't say it.
[734.18] Frank: I can't say it.
[735.18] Frank: Yeah that sort of little car tricycle thing with a propeller on the back driving around.
[746.18] Stephen: And one of those fan boats except with wheels.
[749.18] Frank: Exactly.
[750.18] Frank: Exactly.
[751.18] Frank: And Jack built the mini guinea.
[754.18] Frank: And so he actually took it out and had it flying.
[760.18] Frank: He did initially have a receiver in it that I wouldn't rate very highly.
[771.18] Frank: So when Sheldon first made it I think it got kind of maybe a lap or two in.
[781.18] Frank: And then then it just had a habit of just kind of full ailer on one way then follow the wrong the other piling into the ground.
[790.18] Frank: Which Jack assured me was not the fail safe that he had set up.
[794.18] Frank: But I don't know.
[796.18] Frank: There's only only so much you can say really isn't there.
[802.18] Frank: But yeah so there was the what was going on with with the drinks can because I wasn't there for that bit.
[807.18] Frank: I think I was in the shoes on people that turned up.
[810.18] Tony: I was on a coffee run.
[812.18] Stephen: I think there was some attempt at an air drop and they were experimenting with the drinks can to line it up.
[818.18] Stephen: Whereupon they realized that the internal construction of the fuselage wasn't exactly well designed for this.
[825.18] Stephen: And that a heavy object instead of falling out the door would tend to just sort of slide to the back of the plane immediately jam itself back there.
[833.18] Stephen: And then cause the plane to kind of just go tail down and get stuck.
[838.18] Stephen: So it didn't work.
[840.18] Stephen: And then they'd open the door.
[841.18] Stephen: But of course it would already gone past the door and wedged itself.
[844.18] Tony: So it really happened.
[848.18] Martian: And knock out a goat on its way down.
[852.18] Martian: Yes.
[859.18] Stephen: It's fine.
[860.18] Stephen: I think the goats were fine.
[862.18] Stephen: I was I saw no sign of goats the whole time.
[865.18] Frank: I didn't ever see the trees next to the house when we all first went out there and started flying.
[872.18] Frank: And I was keeping an eye on them.
[873.18] Frank: And they took absolutely zero notice of anything that we were doing or anything that was flying as far as I was concerned.
[879.18] Frank: They were you know they might look up occasionally and then just go back to what they're doing eating and whatever else they do just standing there mainly.
[889.18] Frank: You don't actually find the can in the end.
[893.18] Frank: So Ryan James the wolf in the chat is saying 25 minutes searching for the smallest seven up involving barbed wire and wet feet.
[903.18] Lurgy: We all had wet feet at the end of it.
[907.18] Lurgy: Yeah.
[908.18] Stephen: But yeah the smoke from the plane was pretty good on the first one I filmed you guys for absolutely ages when you're about to throw it lots of discussions and tweaking of things and eventually the second time.
[921.18] Stephen: I've got bored of waiting for people to start the plane up and just gone off around the field wandering around and completely missed when the plane started until it was blowing smoke and went right past my.
[932.18] Stephen: And then realized I should be following that.
[936.18] Frank: Yeah so we well I brought along my ammo can of various power technique bits and Greg from menace brought along his latest prototype of a pyro board effectively.
[956.18] Frank: So based on the menace RC switch that's good for turning on and off LEDs.
[962.18] Frank: He's coming up with a thing for doing some nice pyrotechnics.
[968.18] Frank: Which Andy I see you may or may not have been doing some testing with as well.
[974.18] Frank: So.
[976.18] Frank: Minus brought that along.
[978.18] Frank: I was hoping to have a big Trojan that didn't survive the journey very well to the field.
[984.18] Frank: She said.
[987.18] Tony: All right.
[989.18] Tony: Just have to.
[994.18] Frank: But.
[996.18] Frank: As the.
[999.18] Frank: Fix that right.
[1001.18] Frank: Well I tried fixing it but it wasn't very well fixed and I didn't trust it to last.

[1009.18] Frank: Being attacked by quads.
[1012.18] Frank: So that didn't go up in the air.
[1015.18] Frank: But as Jack has the mini Guinea there.
[1018.18] Frank: That seemed like the ideal platform to be messing around with some pyrotechnics.
[1023.18] Frank: So we did indeed have.
[1026.18] Frank: We started off with just the one smoke grenade on the bottom of it.
[1032.18] Frank: And.
[1034.18] Frank: Flying along and setting that off.
[1036.18] Frank: And once we'd eventually swapped out the receiver for one that was a bit less pants.
[1047.18] Frank: And set up the other ones correctly.
[1051.18] Frank: And then it flew OK.
[1054.18] Frank: Yeah.
[1056.18] Tony: It flew three times in it.
[1059.18] Tony: It received a lot of life.
[1063.18] Frank: Yeah the first time the first few times it flew because it was flying on the.
[1068.18] Frank: Fairly deaf receiver it would kind of go fine for a lap or two and then just spiral into the ground.
[1075.18] Tony: That was so it wasn't pilot error then.
[1079.18] Tony: I remember you're going.
[1081.18] Tony: Six or something you you had.
[1084.18] Frank: It was some tiny little micro receiver out of some kind of part fly thing that is just.
[1092.18] Frank: And he like Maggie himself with a couple of resistors and it definitely looks fairly Jack and a couple of caps.
[1099.18] Frank: Made. Yeah there was there was there was bits of perf board and it looks.
[1105.18] Frank: Yeah I didn't trust it so replaced it with one out of.
[1110.18] Frank: The Trojan actually haha very funny.
[1114.18] Frank: And.
[1116.18] Frank: Yeah the first time I flew off that I hadn't checked.
[1120.18] Frank: The flight controls and so yeah I did a lovely barrel roll before landing it again because the other ones reverse.
[1129.18] Frank: But the.
[1131.18] Frank: Once we sorted that out we could actually fly it got one smoke grenade going off from the bottom.
[1137.18] Frank: And had a few cards flying around chasing that around.
[1141.18] Frank: And.
[1143.18] Frank: Then we tried to do to smoke grenades at the same time.
[1148.18] Frank: No.
[1151.18] Frank: One of them went off the other one.
[1154.18] Frank: Didn't.
[1155.18] Frank: But we worked out why and we adjusted that and then from then on.
[1161.18] Frank: We could do two at a time and it worked really well.
[1163.18] Martian: So I'm looking for a fair fair fair bit of smoke coming out the back of it even with one.
[1169.18] Martian: Oh yeah.
[1172.18] Martian: Twenty five seconds of like quick get in the stream.

[1179.18] Stephen: That was fun.
[1180.18] Stephen: I wish I managed to get a balance lead adapter for three so I was cruising around with these giant three S's on like five inch.
[1188.18] Stephen: I was tearing off the thing on the four inch and I just had to keep the throttle completely pegged to keep up with his crappy plane.
[1194.18] Stephen: It was ridiculous.
[1198.18] Tony: Don't say it was crappy.
[1200.18] Tony: You never be allowed on again.
[1202.18] Tony: Jack gets back.
[1204.18] Stephen: So yeah absolutely.
[1207.18] Stephen: So strictly speaking this crappy crap is its heritage.
[1211.18] Frank: I mean I did like his he put all the vinyls on it as well.
[1217.18] Frank: It's thrown out written on the side.
[1219.18] Frank: Looks pretty smart.
[1221.18] Lurgy: It flew really well.
[1224.18] Lurgy: That's pushing it a bit but yeah.
[1227.18] Lurgy: It was faster than I thought it might have been for.

[1232.18] Frank: I felt you had to fly it quite fast.
[1234.18] Frank: It didn't like flying slowly.

[1240.18] Frank: I don't think it was particularly aerodynamically efficient either.
[1243.18] Stephen: Yeah I think maybe the wings were a bit more kind of rough and ready than they could have been.

[1250.18] Frank: I think there's only so precise you can be foam boards that's been crashed into the ground multiple times.
[1257.18] Frank: Filled with hot glue.
[1258.18] Tony: Yeah it had been crashed a few times.
[1260.18] Lurgy: I find it doesn't make a lot of difference.
[1261.18] Lurgy: It just keeps flying anyway.
[1264.18] Frank: Oh it was flying but you needed a good bit of airspeed to keep it in the air.
[1271.18] Stephen: Those wings you brought were pretty impressive.
[1273.18] Stephen: I saw a couple of the speed passes you were doing on those Lurge.

[1278.18] Tony: Oh Lurge is 120 mile an hour.

[1282.18] Tony: That wasn't the wing.
[1283.18] Lurgy: That was the racer that one.
[1286.18] Lurgy: The wings, well that's just over 100 on a good day.

[1312.9] Frank: It kind of looks like a very sleek Reno racer type thing.

[1318.9] Tony: You also found out that your return to home worked didn't you?
[1327.9] Tony: Yeah that was fun.
[1330.9] Tony: I've never tried this.
[1331.9] Tony: It's coming back.
[1332.9] Tony: It's good.
[1333.9] Tony: It's coming back.
[1334.9] Lurgy: I couldn't believe it.
[1335.9] Lurgy: But yeah that was weird.
[1336.9] Lurgy: Fail safe.
[1337.9] Lurgy: Complete fail safe on Crossfire at like 399 feet away you know?
[1344.9] Stephen: Yep.
[1345.9] Stephen: I think...
[1347.9] Stephen: Sorry?
[1348.9] Stephen: Just out of the blue or were you seeing like...
[1350.9] Lurgy: I saw it drop down and I started to turn and it went completely in it.
[1355.9] Lurgy: All I saw was the ground and then video loss.
[1359.9] Lurgy: Sometimes you just narrow radio masts in your screw.
[1362.9] Lurgy: And I was like oh thank god.
[1365.9] Stephen: That is kind of a 900 megahertz problem isn't it Frank?
[1368.9] Stephen: Like having random radio masts for phone signals at 900.
[1374.9] Frank: Well I mean it's the difference between the 868 and 900 right?
[1380.9] Stephen: Sorry yeah I meant that the bands I think are also used by phone equipment
[1384.9] Stephen: and you haven't got quite so many to skip out of the way as you do at 2.4 so...
[1388.9] Frank: I think probably the bigger problem there when we were looking at it was probably just a mass of wet trees.
[1396.9] Lurgy: Yeah.
[1397.9] Frank: There is that.
[1399.9] Lurgy: The field itself was quite enclosed by tall trees so you had to fly quite high to get out any distance and such.
[1405.9] Stephen: Yeah.
[1406.9] Stephen: I think my most effective range test on the ELRS and DJI was flying down this corridor that someone had cut
[1411.9] Stephen: in what was effectively woodland loads of trees and bushes and they just mowed down there
[1416.9] Stephen: and it went slightly to one side.
[1418.9] Stephen: So I flew down there at like 700 milliwatt and the ELRS I think had a 100 milliwatt or more
[1424.9] Stephen: and they yeah about 40 meters as soon as it hit that curve just better than a rock.
[1430.9] Tony: You were on 25 all the time.
[1433.9] Stephen: I was on 25 all the time. I wasn't there anyway.
[1436.9] Stephen: Yeah right.
[1438.9] Stephen: But yeah it doesn't take much in the way of bushes and grass to completely map a radio.
[1441.9] Lurgy: I've never had a problem with crossfire.

[1578.25] Lurgy: You can't go with that I don't know but it just felt really tail heavy but yeah obviously you can't put a load of nose weight on because then once your streamers are gone you won't pull up will you I don't.
[1592.25] Frank: Yeah so these are like about an inch and a half wide paper streamers that I brought along so that we could attach them onto the back of a load of planes and get the course to chase after.

[2670.99] Tony: But at the time, three and a half years ago when I started this, there was no PDBs what could take the amperage.

[2684.99] Stephen: They're making that frame and clones of it thousands of times and thousands and thousands of people are flying it.

[2753.99] Tony: But this is deep in the guts of the X-Class, so basically I've got to take the top plate off, the bottom plate off.

[2843.99] Stephen: I've been overcoming the bad generic Caddx Omni by using more than 25-milliwatt.
[2849.99] Stephen: And on 25, it didn't show great performance at range. It was a little bit flaky.
[2854.99] Stephen: I dug behind bushes and I'd see blockiness that I just wasn't used to seeing.
[2861.99] Stephen: Which was a little bit annoying, but, you know, it's not the end of the world.
[2864.99] Stephen: It's still all right. I could make out the power lines and everything just fine.
[2869.99] Tony: Yeah, mine wasn't too bad on 25-milliwatt.
[2873.99] Tony: And then I had to put it down to 25 megabits a second as well,

[2880.99] Tony: But you do long-range, don't you, Tony? So you had a decent antenna on it.
