[13.0] Jack: Massive thank you to Carlos Campos, Art Faulkner, Sam Dahmer, Mikey Dredd, on with the show. [22.92] Jack: Hello, and welcome back to Let's Drone Out, and you're listening to Let's Drone Out. [58.93] Jack: Tonight, we are joined by, it made a good little giggle, tonight you're joined by Andrew [68.17] Jack: S. Frank. [69.17] Frank: Good evening. [70.17] Jack: I'm Bright Until I Fly, hello, and everyone's favourite curry kitten. [76.61] Curry: Hello, we're on Let's Drone Out, by the way. [82.09] Jack: My tired, darling wife, Tony, and Bellrick, Stephen. [89.93] Stephen: Hello, and welcome to Let's Drone Out, on Let's Drone Out, with Let's Drone Out. [101.21] Jack: We were waiting around for Stephen and a curry kitten held up the bone drone. [105.89] Jack: Do you want to tell us what happened? [108.49] Jack: Other than... [110.25] Jack: Do you think the bone drone... [111.25] Tony: Who thought that was a good idea? [113.81] Curry: I don't know. [114.81] Curry: I agreed to review it on the basis that it looked stupid, and that made me interested [119.33] Curry: in it. [120.33] Curry: I can't think of a proper thing. [122.53] Curry: People will say, oh, so you can fit through tiny gaps, but you're obviously having yet [126.85] Curry: other things. [127.85] Curry: I thought, as you guys did, that the big deal would be on roll, because the two motors are [135.73] Curry: so close together. [136.73] Curry: It wasn't a problem. [137.73] Curry: As you'd expect, the pitch was very good. [140.65] Curry: The roll was actually fairly normal. [143.17] Curry: The problem I had is, when I did a coordinated turn, I'd you're in, and I'd sort of turn. [152.21] Curry: This would make the gyro think something was up. [155.77] Curry: So I'm going around a turn, and suddenly it goes 100% throttle and shoots upwards, for [160.73] Curry: some reason. [161.73] Jack: Oh, your jump prevention back in the day, do you remember that? [168.61] Jack: Yeah, there's a setting in the GUI, your jump prevention, that you can turn up. [174.13] Jack: Tony, do you remember back in the day, remember when Fossil released the show drone? [181.61] Jack: And do you remember, we were just about leaving, and Banton got his out, and when he yawned, [187.53] Jack: it would jump in the air? [189.53] Jack: Yeah, your jump prevention. [191.97] Jack: I think it's cool. [192.97] Tony: I'll bet it'd be good now, with the software and the stuff. [195.85] Jack: What's the name of that one? [198.45] Frank: That Fossil stuff, sideways thing, because it was like a slightly F1 body, made out of [212.93] Frank: a few layers of the Fossil stuff with VP, right? [217.25] Frank: And then at the front and the back, it had a couple of round carbon tubes, and then it [224.69] Frank: could have the motors tilted quite a bit. [230.37] Frank: Was it a type of Revo, or was the Revo just all something else? [234.61] Frank: No, something else. [235.61] Tony: It was named after a star or something spicy. [239.97] Stephen: This could just be a tuning thing, then, by the sound. [242.89] Stephen: Yeah. [243.89] Stephen: Your jump prevention limit. [244.89] Stephen: It could just be a tuning thing. [245.89] Stephen: It's being replaced by your D, D-game. [247.89] Curry: Oh, well, I can just... [250.17] Curry: What do you think it is, you know? [251.17] Curry: One of the problems with this thing is it didn't come with any particular instructions [255.33] Curry: about what you might need to do, so I thought, oh, I'll just try it as is and see what happens. [260.41] Curry: And it was actually flying around okay until you turn it, and then it tended to go up in [263.89] Curry: the air very fast. [265.25] Curry: The biggest problem I had is I was using a stack which has this XM Plus on it, and so [270.37] Curry: I thought, oh, I'll just do that. [272.05] Curry: And I've been using Express RS for the last bunch of builds, and I sort of take signal [278.93] Curry: for granted these days, and I'm just flying along on this, and twice I just got RX loss, [285.57] Curry: and this thing just went thud. [288.53] Curry: So I never really tested the landing because it just fell on the floor. [292.61] Curry: But this... [293.61] Curry: Actually, the second time it fell on the floor, it didn't do any damage, but the first time [296.09] Curry: it broke some props, after it fell safe twice, and it's going slightly crazy on the turns, [301.53] Curry: I thought, I won't do any more. [303.29] Curry: I'll go back and replace the receiver before I do anything else. [307.89] Curry: But aside from that, it's a bit of an interesting novelty, but I can't think, oh yeah, I really [311.85] Curry: need something like that instead of a regular quad, because it doesn't make any particular [315.73] Curry: sense. [316.73] Stephen: Where would you fly it? [317.73] Stephen: Really small dates, like you want to fly woodkates with a five inch for reasons that you can't [322.13] Stephen: really explain to anyone. [323.53] Curry: Yeah. [324.53] Curry: It's also weird as well to have, looking through the camera, have the prop there. [328.81] Curry: I mean, people that fly a sort of an X Plus would be used to that. [333.97] Curry: If you're used to your arms like that, it's very weird to see a prop right in front of [339.13] Curry: you. [340.13] Curry: You're like, what am I looking at here? [341.13] Curry: Because it doesn't... [342.13] Stephen: You keep thinking something's come loose and your camera's skewed round, doesn't it? [345.13] Curry: Yeah, it's fine. [346.13] Curry: I'm at a peculiar angle. [347.53] Curry: The other really stupid thing, why you wouldn't want to do it, is launching. [352.53] Curry: In a banger video, some idiot holds it like that, starts the props up and sort of lets [359.33] Curry: go. [360.33] Curry: Get the intern to hold it, and you want each week. [362.45] Curry: I value my fingers more. [363.93] Curry: So I sort of, I had this balancing on another matry in the field like this, going sort of [369.21] Curry: upwards like that. [370.21] Curry: But it's, yeah, it's curious. [372.13] Curry: It's kind of fun. [373.13] Stephen: How did you manage to build it because the pictures on the site look like it had about [377.93] Stephen: half an inch of room in the canopy for all of the components? [381.45] Curry: Yeah, I think I showed you guys the problem I was having. [386.41] Curry: I've got, there's the stack here. [388.77] Curry: And normally, what I've done is basically put a standoff there, because I had to raise [392.89] Curry: my stack up. [394.69] Curry: The picture literally just had a single board, this sort of all-in-one board. [399.01] Curry: I've built mine with standoffs, basically, to raise it above. [401.89] Curry: And it's not a big stack there, but yeah, a regular stack just needs a bit of a standoff. [408.21] Curry: Yeah, it's a novelty, interesting kind of funny build, but I don't expect anybody to [413.77] Curry: suddenly say, yes, that's what I'm looking for. [416.77] Curry: I want to fly through very narrow corridors and nothing else. [420.29] Stephen: I have real trouble tuning my quad, because it was all just too easy with this modern [425.61] Stephen: beta flight version. [426.61] Stephen: It's like a really awkward frame that forces us to go back five years and tuning. [431.89] Curry: It wasn't interesting, because I'm in quite a narrow field. [434.49] Curry: So when I was doing a turn, the first thing it did when it went full throttle is go over [438.85] Curry: someone else's land. [439.85] Curry: And I was like, eek, that's not good, why is it going? [443.49] Curry: Especially with the fact it kept losing signal and dropping down. [445.69] Curry: That was a bit frightening, but I'll put a different receiver on. [450.57] Frank: I wonder how much of it, of your kind of throttle in the corners issue, might be from, because [458.85] Frank: when it's when it's yawing, like the yaw moment doesn't really matter that it's off plane [465.53] Frank: just from inertia. [466.53] Frank: But aerodynamically, you've got the interaction between the top propeller that's on one side [473.57] Frank: and the bottom propeller that's on the other side, going the other way around. [476.37] Frank: I wonder whether there's kind of, yeah, sort of prop wash from one, from your right motor [481.65] Frank: to your left motor, or vice versa, right at the back, I guess, that's going to cause more [486.69] Frank: change. [487.69] Curry: It certainly seems like something that triggers this weird chain reaction, which is basically [491.13] Curry: saying something's knocked me off center, I need to increase my motor in order to right [497.73] Curry: myself. [498.73] Curry: And that has an opposite effect. [500.41] Curry: And you just end up like full throttle, going crazy. [504.05] Curry: I've had it before on other quads where I've literally turned air mode on, and it's gone [508.25] Curry: because there was some slight imbalance, where by spinning up one motor, it's like, that's [516.89] Curry: bad. [517.89] Curry: I need to spin up the other motor to counteract and the other motor says I need to spin up [520.25] Curry: the other motor and it just, it just goes out of control. [524.01] Curry: Interesting. [525.01] Curry: Yeah. [526.01] Curry: But yeah, needs more room. [528.29] Stephen: Yeah, I was going to say I have that all the time trenching lightweight stuff where it [531.49] Stephen: just flies to the moon, you'd like bump the pits up and a little bit of vibration just [536.05] Stephen: gets run away and got to be faster. [538.73] Curry: There's nothing you want more than when it's six degrees outside, you've got a 16 mile [542.97] Curry: an hour wind on your poor little fingers that are exposed. [546.97] Curry: And the stupid quad is not doing what it tells you. [549.57] Curry: And then you have to walk into the cow field to retrieve it. [553.17] Curry: Fun times. [554.17] Curry: You need some asterisk gloves. [555.17] UNKNOWN: I do. [556.33] Curry: I do. [557.33] Curry: I watched last week's episode, I saw them. [560.33] Tony: Or a puke. [563.33] Tony: Puke pocket. [565.33] Tony: Puke pocket. [566.33] Frank: All that. [567.33] Frank: Yeah. [568.33] Frank: I think I've found the fossil stuff frame that we were talking about. [574.05] Frank: I think this is it. [575.53] Frank: The event horizon. [576.53] Frank: I see it. [577.53] Tony: Oh wow. [578.53] Tony: I knew it was spicy. [579.53] Frank: Looks like it's made of plumbing supplies. [581.05] Stephen: That looks very full. [582.05] Curry: It's very heavy, I have to say. [583.85] Curry: It looks like you could break into a house with it. [586.77] Stephen: Like jubilee clips holding the arms together. [589.37] Stephen: What's going on there? [590.37] Stephen: I don't know. [591.37] Stephen: Like why are bands running on them? [593.41] Curry: Oh yeah. [594.41] Curry: It looks like if those are just like carbon fiber tubes, then is it something just like [599.37] Curry: screwing the end of the arm? [600.57] Jack: They were Delron and they were the, you know, the V-band with the clips that buy into them [606.97] Jack: and squeeze them together. [607.97] Jack: I can't remember what they were. [608.97] Jack: Yeah, that's it. [609.97] Jack: They're basically the things that hold CV boots together. [615.21] Stephen: It's got a really good robot wars vibe. [617.61] Tony: It does, isn't it? [619.01] Tony: It was good to say that you could twist the props forward more. [623.77] Tony: Because you didn't have to have it like that. [626.73] Tony: You could literally... [627.73] Stephen: Yeah, people used to think that was a good idea as well. [629.37] Tony: That's angle the props and keep the camera flat. [633.85] Tony: But Johnny Bandit flew really well when he got his going. [639.13] Tony: But mine was just rubbish. [641.81] Tony: I think I had little bees in there and it was back in them days. [646.81] Jack: So if I had got it well, that's... [649.01] Jack: No, he's mini F1 as well. [651.73] Tony: Yeah, it was... [652.73] Jack: With a right angle adapter on it. [654.73] Jack: It was just absolute doggy. [657.09] Frank: Probably like a 3S. [659.09] Frank: I reckon now though. [661.29] Frank: Chaos. [662.29] Frank: Not even chaos. [663.73] Frank: This is what I've been doing. [665.73] Stephen: I'm one of those old single crash VTX antennas as well. [670.97] Frank: But Jack still demands to use. [674.97] Frank: What? [675.97] Stephen: Well, I used them for a bit, but they are single crash antennas. [679.85] Stephen: So I don't use them anymore. [681.85] Jack: What, single crash what? [683.01] Stephen: Just don't crash. [684.65] Frank: Single crash VTX antennas with your little caps that we have to go hunting through the [689.53] Frank: grass for. [690.53] Frank: Oh yeah. [691.53] Jack: Exactly those ones. [692.77] Jack: Okay. [694.77] Stephen: Very well. [695.77] Stephen: Did you see the other RotoRiot thing they did on that? [697.77] Stephen: Because they followed up that bone drone with the propellers on top and bottom with a comparison [702.13] Stephen: of I think it was like a Y6 or an X8 versus the alternative. [709.17] Stephen: Yeah, it was an X in it and eight motor in an X config versus eight motor in a full dispersed [718.61] Stephen: or separated, not on top of each other config. [722.13] Stephen: And they were showing it that when you put them in that stacked config, you get dramatically [726.57] Stephen: less thrust. [727.57] Stephen: Like they could lift something like only 60% of the weight that they could lift when they'd [733.29] Stephen: actually spaced all the propellers out. [735.45] Stephen: You get far less of a benefit from doubling up the motors when they're on top of each [739.65] Stephen: other. [740.65] Curry: It makes sense. [741.65] Curry: I mean, you're overlapping everything. [742.65] Curry: You're just creating turbulence and air that's already flowing. [747.61] Frank: Yeah. [748.97] Curry: But can you fly down a tiny corridor? [753.65] Curry: No. [756.57] Frank: Yeah, I mean, the kind of looking at the full scale stuff, the only time that you have like [767.17] Frank: contour rotating propellers on the same engine or at least the same shaft is really when you've [775.17] Frank: got too much engine for the propellers. [777.77] Frank: Like if you're doing like some of the Reno races stuff where they've really souped up [782.29] Frank: an engine and they've just got so much power that they just need somewhere else to put [787.05] Frank: it. [788.05] Frank: That's when they do something like that or where it's like the big turboprop like cargo [796.69] Frank: planes where maybe they've done the same sort of thing where they've put on so much kind [805.01] Frank: of big engine on a wing that you just can't fit in enough propellers. [809.69] Frank: So you just you just put a couple on there and lose a load of efficiency. [815.37] Stephen: So on a quad, if you haven't already gone to like five bladed props, you probably shouldn't [819.33] Stephen: be double stacking your motors, is that what you're saying? [823.41] Frank: Yeah, I think it's but it's really common in the kind of camera, you know, aerial photography [830.85] Frank: type stuff, isn't it? [833.01] Stephen: Well, they're carrying 20 grams worth of camera, so they probably just want to know that if [837.09] Stephen: one propeller explodes, there's another one to stop it from flipping outside. [840.45] Tony: Yeah, that's all they're worried about. [842.65] Frank: But it means that they've got, you know, they're dependent on that one arm, right? [847.41] Frank: I wonder how much extra kind of redundancy and I guess you've got the size thing then, [853.93] Frank: haven't you? [854.93] Frank: If you're going to have a full like eight arm, eight motor, oxicopter, then I guess [864.01] Frank: that's going to end up quite a bit bigger for going through your doorways and whatever [868.49] Frank: than X8. [872.21] Frank: Maybe that's the kind of trade off that you're going to have there. [875.17] Tony: That probably is why they do it, I should think. [878.13] Stephen: Yeah, it seems to be a whole lot of people that's getting popularity as we're saying [883.42] Stephen: the other week in Hollywood, a lot cheaper than a helicopter. [888.82] Stephen: People are starting to fly them a bit indoors as well, so you see a lot of shots that start [892.34] Stephen: outdoors and go indoors or vice versa. [894.98] Stephen: I guess that they're using the rigs to do stuff like that with a big fancy red camera [898.86] Stephen: on it. [899.86] Stephen: I'm not sure we get one of those big altars through a doorway very easily, it'd be a bloody [904.42] Stephen: big doorway, wouldn't it, but maybe the next eight. [910.42] Frank: Speaking of cameras and filming and stuff, you've broken and fixed one recently, right [917.66] Frank: Tony? [918.66] Tony: Oh, just my little GoPro, seven. [921.54] Tony: Yeah, look, I've still got the shattered glass. [925.78] Tony: This is what I love about the seven, literally just twist the frontal. [932.74] Jack: Yeah, five, six, seven, eight, they all do the same. [937.14] Tony: And now you can't do it. [939.38] Curry: What did a nine and ten do then? [940.66] Curry: Because I thought you could change the lenses because they're heavier. [943.66] Curry: They're heavier. [944.66] Stephen: They've added reassuring heft. [946.66] Tony: Yeah, you can do that max lens mod on the nine. [950.3] Tony: Doesn't that involve taking the original lens out and putting a different one in? [954.5] Tony: I'm presuming this is still waterproof. [956.3] Tony: I mean, it's quite tight fit to get on and on, so. [961.42] Stephen: Can you get just an aftermarket shell for the camera that gives you like a weight reduction [965.82] Stephen: and replaceable lenses for the nine and ten? [968.46] Stephen: Or are you stuck? [970.46] Jack: I don't know. [973.7] Jack: I haven't seen them or eight does not have an easy to remove lens. [980.58] Stephen: We're up to nine or ten now, I can't remember what place it's from. [983.38] Jack: Ten, yes. [984.38] Jack: Ten, yeah. [985.38] Jack: Yeah. [986.38] Jack: Right, so many. [987.38] Jack: What was I going to say? [990.38] Jack: Have you seen the happy model ES-24 TX Pro? [999.1] Jack: Does like a thousand milliwatt or one watt? [1002.82] Jack: Yeah. [1003.82] Stephen: Yeah, it's the one that they put the fan on it. [1008.1] Jack: Is that all that I'm tempted to do the open LRS, but I want to build my own module. [1015.62] Jack: Yeah, do it. [1017.46] Jack: Can you help me? [1018.46] Jack: Can you navigate me? [1019.86] Stephen: Failsafe. [1020.86] Stephen: We've got Failsafe on the chat there. [1022.94] Stephen: I bought two modules from Failsafe and they've come out really well. [1027.74] Stephen: So if you want anyone to ask how to do it, there's some. [1031.3] Jack: No, yeah, like the BOM and you know, buy a PCB off someone, I don't know. [1039.5] Jack: I think it'd be quite fun to do. [1041.98] Jack: It was a delicate enough... [1042.98] Stephen: I don't know if the children pronounce the Nim-noo. [1045.98] Stephen: Nim-noo. [1047.62] Stephen: I brought two, I don't know. [1050.42] Stephen: The Nim-noo one does look good. [1052.22] Stephen: They've just brought out a module that does everything the beta FPV one does, but apparently [1058.9] Stephen: with forethought, with added forethought. [1063.74] Stephen: So they've actually put the fan next to the elements that produce heat, for example. [1068.7] Stephen: What? [1069.7] Stephen: Which was agreed to be a universally sensible design choice. [1073.66] Stephen: I already had a beta FPV when they put the fan as far away from the bit that was hot [1076.62] Stephen: as possible on the other side of the board, in fact. [1078.86] Curry: I already had a communication from beta FPV asking me to defend their position of the [1085.22] Curry: fan. [1086.22] Curry: They're saying, it doesn't matter, it's fine. [1090.54] Curry: Well, they're saying it doesn't matter and I'm saying, I don't care and I don't think [1096.06] Curry: their way of replying to a comment about their teardown is particularly professional when [1102.78] Curry: just goes, this is s**t. [1104.58] Curry: We meant to do this. [1105.74] Curry: We did. [1106.74] Curry: Honest. [1107.74] Curry: Governor. [1108.74] Stephen: I'm sure the fan helps. [1109.74] Stephen: I mean, it's not doing nothing. [1111.38] Stephen: It would just do a lot more if it was actually blowing on, if they put the components on [1115.86] Stephen: the same side of the board where the moving air was, it would definitely work more effectively [1120.38] Stephen: than cooling the back of the components through the PCB. [1124.22] Stephen: Yes, it's sound. [1126.22] Tony: Oh, zero. [1127.22] Tony: Thank you, zero. [1128.22] Stephen: But I mean, you say it's not really an issue because I never have to turn my module up [1134.38] Stephen: above 100 milliwatt. [1135.38] Stephen: I only put on 100 milliwatt if I'm doing something stupid with one of those EP2 and the ceramic [1139.58] Stephen: antennas. [1140.58] Stephen: I just, you know, flying miles on that and it's a crap antenna. [1145.38] Stephen: Anything that's actually got one of those little immortal T-style antennas there. [1148.74] Curry: It's true, everyone's very keen on getting, I must have one watt out of my module and [1155.9] Curry: I've been unable to outfly 100 milliwatts. [1160.62] Curry: Unless I use the as unreleased to FPV light radio 3, which runs at a range of about 800 [1168.54] Stephen: meters. [1169.54] Stephen: I was thinking about upgrading my fleet before this weekend, but I've got probably about [1174.34] Stephen: 10 receivers now on Express LRS. [1177.3] Stephen: So I'm just going to wait until two is a little bit further along the RC thing. [1183.46] Stephen: We've got three RCs out now, and I'm just going to hold fire. [1187.3] Stephen: I think be a little bit more conservative and actually do some flying instead of constant [1190.9] Stephen: upgrading. [1191.9] Tony: That means going out in the cold and the wet the weekend. [1195.98] Tony: Yeah. [1196.98] Stephen: It's been really dry, though. [1198.5] Stephen: That's something. [1199.5] Tony: It's freezing cold. [1200.58] Tony: It's been a great November, but I think tomorrow we're starting with a bit of rain. [1205.42] Curry: It's not looking good tomorrow. [1207.42] Jack: Have you guys seen the new Speedy B pup pay it forward? [1211.82] Jack: Bardoy was talking about it. [1214.54] Jack: You get a box of old stuff together, and then post it to different people and tell you stuff [1221.34] Jack: that you want out and you put stuff, it's an honor system, you put stuff in that you [1228.46] Jack: don't want and you pay it forward. [1231.82] Stephen: It sounds like a lot to shift the old bits of oily metal gears and things that you receive [1237.1] Stephen: from Frank. [1238.1] Stephen: Yeah. [1239.1] Stephen: That's the idea. [1240.1] Curry: Thanks for the strange wheels from Frank. [1248.42] Curry: Can I just put the entire card in there and send that one? [1254.22] Curry: Well, God bless the God. [1261.06] Curry: He's still in there. [1262.06] Curry: He's still waiting to get his power built out of carrier bags. [1267.1] Stephen: It's a really elaborate way to kill yourself, that one. [1271.1] Jack: Maybe we could do something like that in the LDO Discord. [1276.1] Jack: Maybe put out a thing where you swap these post list stuff up and if someone says, I'll [1286.9] Jack: have that. [1287.9] Stephen: It'd be more sensible if you could meet and exchange it because I think the delivery costs [1293.02] Stephen: in the UK are not great. [1294.58] Stephen: It's generally cheaper to get stuff from China and free delivery than to buy them. [1299.42] Jack: I was just trying to think of a way of not sending a big old heavy box around. [1307.86] Frank: Maybe if we could arrange some kind of slightly anonymized map and then he could maybe find [1315.86] Frank: the next nearest person to you, meet up with them, pass the box on and just kind of... [1321.22] Stephen: You know those community library boxes? [1323.62] Stephen: I don't know if people have seen this but around our way there's little community library [1327.46] Stephen: things and people build something that looks like a large birdhouse with a door on the [1331.22] Stephen: front and paint it funny colors and they put their old books in there on some shelves and [1336.06] Stephen: then people go past and take a book and then leave one of their own and get an honor system. [1341.9] Stephen: If only RC was a bit more popular, we could just leave all our old RC parts out in little [1347.18] Stephen: hutches on the curb and we could swap them. [1350.38] Frank: Maybe we should do this at work in the drink. [1353.54] Frank: Yeah. [1354.9] Frank: I'm now wondering if this is how... [1357.34] Curry: Porn was done in the old days because if you're old enough to remember it like me, in the [1362.26] Curry: olden days before the internet, you used to find porn in hedgerows and stuff. [1366.94] Curry: And I'm wondering if the society, the honor system, you'd take your mag and give it there, [1371.42] Curry: you'd pick up a different one, you'd go away again and the old teenager would stumble across [1377.38] Curry: it and like, wow, look at that. [1380.9] Curry: This is great. [1381.62] Curry: I used to have a bush in a bush. [1384.7] Jack: I think, Andy, I see you mentioned something about that. [1388.06] Stephen: I remember an old comedy sketch, which show was it where there were people who said, oh, [1393.34] Stephen: we remember being kids, but you've got to pay it forward, haven't you? [1396.74] Stephen: And all these like middle aged people were hiding bags of pornography in the woods. [1404.7] Stephen: It's for the children. [1405.78] Stephen: You've got to remember it's for the children. [1408.7] Jack: That worked. [1411.06] Jack: Yeah, do not be balding bushes now. [1415.66] Curry: Websites for everything. [1417.22] Curry: You weren't picky when you were just discovering your jazz mags in the hedgerows. [1422.5] Curry: Pages are missing. [1424.78] Stephen: Ah, a picture of rural Idl. [1429.18] Frank: What happened? [1430.62] Frank: Yeah, maybe we can do some like geocaching of drone bits. [1436.06] Tony: Oh, yeah, that's a good idea. [1438.26] Tony: If we are hidden. [1439.26] Curry: Yeah, literally, next time you crash one in the tree, just take the coordinates in. [1446.14] Frank: See, we'll get it down for you. [1448.42] Frank: Just last known position. [1449.86] Jack: Just go. [1454.06] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, downloaded and edited to [1458.38] Frank: make sense when it played audio only sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the [1463.22] Frank: internet, forwarded through to your podcast provider, downloaded playing on your device [1467.38] Frank: and is now playing in your ears. [1469.22] Frank: All thanks to our patrons. [1471.38] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [1474.74] Frank: Find out more at Patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [1479.66] Frank: Anyone done much flying? [1481.18] Frank: Jack came up and we did some laser cutting for the [1488.42] Frank: mini Guinea and some other bits. [1490.9] Tony: That's still alive, that thing. [1492.34] Tony: I thought we had got blind. [1493.54] Frank: Really making some improvements. [1495.1] Stephen: Is it getting a splint or is it getting a complete redesign? [1499.18] Frank: It's it's it's very much a triggers broom mechanically. [1505.58] Jack: Oh no, not really. [1508.26] Frank: We've only replaced this and that and the other and cut out a few of these. [1512.14] Tony: But it's in a bag. [1515.58] Stephen: I did some fanning around myself for later. [1518.14] Stephen: I've got this custom four inch that I've been in the bag. [1521.14] Tony: Look, he's taking it out. [1522.86] Stephen: Pre-crashed. [1523.78] Stephen: What's he got there? [1526.54] Tony: What do you got? [1529.66] Stephen: Some bits. [1531.06] Stephen: Oh, the camera's not enjoying that. [1532.74] Stephen: We have something that looks like plain in potentia. [1537.66] Jack: Is it going to be yellow again? [1540.42] Jack: Yeah, I'll have to buy more color from. [1547.38] Jack: Tony loves it. [1550.14] Stephen: It was a fun little thing with the tail catch and stuff. [1553.74] Stephen: Yeah, look pretty awesome with the smoke on it. [1555.94] Stephen: I was just looking at those videos again. [1557.98] Stephen: I'm kind of flying around completely confused and don't notice it until you [1561.74] Stephen: start the smoke and I'm like, oh, there he is. [1566.46] Frank: Yeah, because we're hoping we'll, we'll be putting this on Patreon. [1573.74] Frank: We're hoping to do some night flying on, on New Year's Eve on the [1578.58] Frank: afternoon of New Year's Eve at a secret location. [1583.82] Frank: So we will announce it to Patreons first and they'll get first reviews all. [1587.7] Frank: And if we still got some spaces, then we'll open it up to everyone else. [1591.82] Frank: So look forward to that after the show. [1594.14] Frank: If you're a patron. [1595.58] Stephen: I was going to say, I tried to fly this thing again. [1598.46] Stephen: This is because I've been messing around beta flight and putting in [1602.1] Stephen: DJI on-screen display patches. [1604.3] Stephen: I've been updating through 4.3 history. [1607.46] Stephen: And, um, I did it again and then found out it was puking on my config. [1611.58] Stephen: It didn't want, didn't want to take on my PIDS because they've [1614.5] Stephen: changed the names of all the sliders. [1616.98] Stephen: Um, so I kind of went in there and found some odd patches. [1620.3] Stephen: Um, one where it wanted to reset my filters and set them to two and five [1624.82] Stephen: Hertz, and then it wanted to reset all the PIDS. [1628.22] Stephen: And so I just kind of winged it and guessed the PIDS and, um, I got it spot [1632.1] Stephen: on first time, which is probably a sign I've been spending too much time [1635.9] Stephen: tinkering with this one, but there's, there's about a million [1639.38] Stephen: sliders in 4.3 now it's gone. [1642.58] Stephen: It's gotten a bit out of control. [1644.5] Jack: Was it just gone the other way? [1647.1] Stephen: Yeah. [1647.46] Stephen: Like if you enable expert mode, it doesn't just show you the kind of [1651.02] Stephen: dampening and, um, stability on whatever sliders that kind of P gain, [1657.06] Stephen: I gain D gain, it just shows you all sorts of blends and ratios and things. [1662.98] Stephen: It's a bit much. [1663.66] Curry: I don't like it. [1665.38] Stephen: It's just about makes sense, but you have to really reframe what you're [1668.42] Stephen: doing and think about, well, what, what, what problem are you trying to solve? [1672.94] Stephen: And then they do help once you kind of understand, I need to, you know, [1677.5] Stephen: improve tracking or I need to improve prop wash handling and you [1680.82] Stephen: can like narrow it down. [1682.58] Stephen: They've also changed it. [1683.7] Stephen: So you don't just enable D min, but you like have D max as a multiple [1689.02] Stephen: of your basic D gains. [1690.74] Stephen: So that's totally adjustable now. [1695.1] Stephen: I just didn't disable the D min can't be bothered, but I don't have enough [1700.26] Curry: time for this, I just, because now it takes like, it's a one hour trip [1704.3] Curry: just to go and fly something. [1705.94] Curry: I don't want to fap about, I just want it to fly. [1708.3] Curry: It's like fly good. [1711.46] Curry: And then if it doesn't, I get disappointed. [1714.54] Curry: Does it stay in the air? [1715.74] Curry: Just in case. [1717.58] Curry: Does it stay in the air? [1718.74] Curry: Does it go rapidly in the air every time you do a coordinated turn? [1722.38] Curry: Okay. [1723.06] Curry: We can work around that. [1724.34] Curry: We just won't turn. [1725.34] Stephen: It's going to just keep fail-saving. [1727.18] Stephen: Just split s every time, no turns. [1730.1] Stephen: Just that's what you've got. [1731.5] Stephen: That's what's left in the bag. [1734.34] Stephen: Was it okay when you did like rolls and flips on the pitch axis and things? [1740.98] Stephen: Or did it hate those? [1742.86] Curry: And it was okay if you do just a yaw. [1747.14] Curry: If you're gentle around the turn, it's fine. [1749.78] Curry: As soon as you coordinate and use both sticks at a time. [1752.86] Curry: It's when it seemed to go a bit crazy. [1754.14] Curry: There was a little bit of rise on the yaw. [1757.02] Curry: It was obviously overcompensating. [1758.74] Curry: But as soon as you mixed in a roll with yaw, it's like, we're going. [1765.06] Stephen: Yeah. [1765.26] Stephen: Not to say 4.3 is bad. [1766.74] Stephen: I think it's good, by the way, for it to Magic Pencils comment. [1769.14] Stephen: Like the defaults do work fine. [1770.82] Stephen: I was just really aggressively trying to tune that to get rid of every last [1774.46] Stephen: bit of prop wash, which I did in the end. [1777.22] Stephen: The fact that it refused to take my values from the 4.3 build of two [1782.62] Stephen: months ago was just a bit of pain. [1784.14] Stephen: That's all. [1785.38] Tony: Well, I don't think I've put any of them on for so long. [1793.02] Tony: I saw a comment. [1793.78] Tony: I haven't had any new builds or anything that I've had to update. [1798.26] Frank: So multiple use work before you find them yet, Tony? [1802.78] Tony: Yes, perfect. [1805.22] Stephen: Sorry. [1806.38] Stephen: Yeah, I was going to say I saw a comment in beta flight where there was [1809.58] Stephen: some something to the tune of 4.3 will be final in November 2020. [1816.06] Stephen: And we will be planning a release in early 2021. [1819.34] Stephen: And they just went through and changed it this week and just changed the year. [1824.9] Stephen: It's like a final in November 2021 will be released in March 2022. [1830.54] Stephen: That's just like that. [1831.9] Stephen: Okay, fine. [1834.38] Stephen: Who knows what's happening there? [1837.14] Jack: That is funny. [1838.14] Jack: Yeah, Tony's like must have abandoned a race flight by now. [1844.38] Jack: Is that still a thing? [1846.62] Tony: I am flying race flight for about four years. [1851.58] Tony: You hated it, didn't you? [1853.74] Tony: The early builds were poo and then they were really good. [1857.74] Tony: It was really good. [1859.58] Tony: And then it went poo again. [1862.46] Tony: And then I think it's gone good again. [1864.7] Tony: But I haven't bothered with it for so long. [1867.98] Tony: I mean, like I said, I haven't had to do anything. [1873.98] Tony: I've got no new builds coming. [1876.06] Tony: I have to rebuild my X-Class, but everything's going to be fine. [1881.66] Tony: I'm not even going to touch that. [1882.78] Tony: I'll just move the FC over and all that and fingers crossed. [1888.14] Tony: The only thing I am going to probably change is the ESCs, which might upset it all. [1892.78] Tony: But we'll have to see. [1895.66] Tony: What are the ESCs? [1897.98] Tony: The bloody expensive ones. [1902.94] Tony: It's for X-Class. [1903.74] Curry: They're all bloody expensive. [1905.26] Tony: Yes. [1907.1] Curry: Who's going to... [1907.58] Tony: I think they're a tunnel pop. [1910.06] Tony: So I'm going to have to buy five for one spare. [1916.38] Jack: Are you going to buy them? [1919.5] Tony: Yeah. [1920.4] Frank: At what point does an ESC stop being an ESC and start being a three-phase inverter? [1927.44] Frank: Is it sort of bigger than your head? [1930.96] Jack: If you have to pay road tax on it. [1936.08] Tony: Yeah, the APD ones I'm going to put in there. [1941.92] Jack: Yeah. [1942.08] Jack: How about a PDB, Tony? [1944.64] Tony: And I am going to buy a PD. [1950.96] Tony: Yes. [1952.32] Stephen: There needs to be some competition for those high-power ESCs. [1955.84] Stephen: It seems like it's APD and nothing. [1958.96] Stephen: That's why the prices are so crazy, right? [1961.44] Tony: Yeah, I don't think there is anything else. [1963.28] Tony: Oh, you see. [1965.68] Stephen: There's some iFlight ones around 120A, but I think there's nothing above 120 other than those. [1971.76] Tony: Yeah, I think the ones I'm going to get are 200s. [1974.96] Stephen: I was checking on CleanFlight because I remember when you guys had Hydra on, [1979.68] Stephen: he was talking about taking changes from Betaflight back into that, [1983.44] Stephen: but he seems to have given up on that idea as of a year or two ago, which was a shame. [1990.16] Jack: I think he's just focused on making hardware. [1995.2] Jack: Last on my story, he was using a pick and place machine and everything. [2001.6] Curry: Holy moly, you weren't kidding about those APD ESCs. [2005.44] Curry: I was looking because Rupert White, who's going to be on the show in a couple of weeks, [2010.0] Curry: had just set the speed record to that one. [2014.08] Tony: Did he use APD? [2016.0] Curry: No, yeah, he's got a 200 amp APD. [2020.0] Curry: Just the one mine. [2021.84] Curry: Yeah, that's a good thing. [2023.12] Tony: He's got my fire, isn't he? [2027.11] Curry: Oh, that's right on that time. [2030.31] Stephen: Shady, see the flight by a googly bird. [2035.99] Stephen: Yeah, I think Curry's been having a natter to him as well. [2039.59] Curry: Yeah, interesting. [2040.31] Curry: We were talking, I think when Bruce was on, we were mentioning Spocktra, [2044.55] Curry: and Jack hadn't heard of them, and their videos have all been taken down, [2048.07] Curry: so I can't even direct you to them and say, watch this, it's quite funny. [2051.67] Curry: They're not there. [2052.23] Curry: Their videos were taken down? [2054.31] Curry: What happened? [2054.79] Curry: Well, they're not there anymore. [2055.99] Curry: They've taken the videos down. [2057.59] Curry: Oh, right, okay. [2058.71] Curry: What was Spocktra 50? [2060.87] Curry: Spocktra 50 was just a bunch of old guys that worked together, [2065.59] Curry: and would just go out in a public park, and fly stuff, and crash stuff. [2072.15] Curry: And I think the problem is, they often commented on young ladies walking past, [2077.27] Curry: and perhaps that's why they took the videos down. [2080.15] Curry: Maybe that got them into trouble. [2081.91] Curry: Spocktra videos still are my subs. [2083.83] Curry: Let me check it, Shady, I want to make sure they're there, [2086.71] Curry: because then I can make Jack watch them all. [2089.91] Stephen: Yeah, this is what you get for no competition, [2093.27] Stephen: saying that 190 quid says numbers go FPV for the APD200. [2097.75] Tony: Jesus, probably won't buy the 200, then. [2101.59] Stephen: Yeah, it's a bit rich, isn't it? [2103.99] Stephen: They need a few people in on that game to push the prices down. [2107.27] Tony: Unless we get some kind of sponsor which Martin's trying to push, [2110.63] Tony: or we might have a not Red Bull, but what's the other quite tasty drink? [2120.52] Tony: Spocktra? [2121.8] Tony: Yeah. [2122.76] Stephen: Have you talked to that Alka Motors guy who was doing his own alternative to BL Heli 32? [2128.12] Stephen: Maybe that'd be worth talking to, [2130.04] Stephen: because he was considering doing some sort of ESC firmware and open-sourcing ESC designs. [2136.76] Stephen: If you could get someone to start building ESCs for you, [2139.64] Stephen: he'd be literally off to the races. [2142.68] Stephen: Given the crazy cost of ESCs in X-Class racing, [2146.2] Stephen: I'm a little bit surprised that no one's tried to do their own ESC boards. [2152.84] Curry: No, no, no. [2153.48] Curry: Quickly, indeed, and say, [2155.48] Curry: good news, Jack. [2156.36] Curry: The Spocktra 50 stuff is still there, as people point out to me. [2160.36] Curry: I must have been looking at that. [2161.48] Curry: They had another channel as well, [2163.0] Curry: which they refer to as their Don't Share This One. [2165.16] Curry: This is dodgy. [2167.72] Curry: Maybe that's the one that's gone. [2169.4] Curry: You've got stuff to watch. [2172.2] Tony: It is good. [2173.16] Tony: They've got gliders and all that and all that. [2175.8] Jack: Yeah, I saw it. [2177.56] Jack: I need, like, you know, these are... [2180.04] Jack: Monkey boy. [2180.92] Jack: I want a curated list, a little curried list, [2186.6] Jack: like these are the ones to get into, [2189.64] Jack: because I feel a bit outside, like I watch them, [2193.48] Jack: and I'm outside the jokes. [2195.32] Curry: Well, just get on and watch them then. [2196.76] Stephen: Hurry up. [2197.96] Stephen: Including such videos as Death by Expo. [2201.4] Jack: All right, that's a good one. [2203.08] Jack: I can watch that. [2204.28] Stephen: Did anyone catch the video of Open HD with this giant Jetson board? [2209.24] Frank: No, it sounds funny. [2210.44] Stephen: Mario FPV flying it around, [2212.6] Stephen: and he's taken something that it's the size of a... [2216.36] Stephen: It's like an Android TV box, if you imagine that. [2219.8] Stephen: Bolted into a quad with cable ties, [2223.24] Stephen: the most shoddy of builds, [2224.84] Stephen: because there's just no way to fit this thing in [2226.76] Stephen: unless you've got some huge autopilot rig, [2229.4] Stephen: which he hasn't. [2230.04] Stephen: I mean, the guy's flying this on three-inch, [2232.52] Stephen: so it's comical. [2233.48] Stephen: It's just like... [2235.24] Stephen: Imagine you've taken, like, a CD case or something [2237.72] Stephen: and just put it on the top of your three-inch quad [2239.72] Stephen: and put cable ties around it. [2241.08] Stephen: That's kind of... [2242.44] Stephen: That's what you're looking at. [2243.08] Curry: It literally sounds like my regular Open HD quad build. [2248.84] Stephen: But he's managed to crank it a bit, [2250.92] Stephen: because this is one that's got some serious image processing hardware. [2254.12] Stephen: It's an NVIDIA board, [2255.0] Stephen: and NVIDIA are famous originally for gaming cards, [2258.2] Stephen: and then they got in in all this kind of high-performance compute stuff, [2261.56] Stephen: and they're currently used for machine learning [2263.64] Stephen: and training an inference of visual data, [2267.16] Stephen: so to do pattern recognition for autonomous vehicles [2270.28] Stephen: and God knows what. [2271.64] Stephen: And so they've taken this type of accelerator [2274.04] Stephen: that can do video... [2276.12] Stephen: All sorts of video acceleration [2277.64] Stephen: and doing it using video encode and decode acceleration on the Nano, [2281.96] Stephen: and he's able to get it down to 55 milliseconds latency, [2285.96] Stephen: where previously they were talking around 100-110 milliseconds. [2289.96] Stephen: He's had to crunch it down to 480 lines to get that, [2293.96] Stephen: so 720-240. [2297.48] Stephen: But it's promising, at least. [2299.32] Stephen: Unfortunately, it's just nowhere near what you get with SharkBite or DJI, [2303.4] Stephen: so it's still relegated to the long-range crowd. [2307.0] Curry: What the plan is, [2308.04] Curry: is the guys that are working on the hardware solution [2312.28] Curry: are aiming to go for between 50-60 milliseconds of latency [2318.68] Curry: based on a single board that will do... [2321.48] Curry: But at what resolution? [2324.12] Curry: I think they're aiming 720. [2327.0] Curry: That would be okay. [2328.6] Curry: Which... I think the problem is with using single-board computers, [2332.76] Curry: is you're stuck with running an OS, [2337.0] Curry: and all the regular interrupts and OS stuff you do. [2342.52] Curry: It's not like a real-time thing. [2345.16] Curry: You haven't got deterministic workflow to do one thing or the other. [2350.2] Curry: And plus, you haven't got any specialized encode-decode hardware. [2354.68] Curry: Obviously, the Nano had some. [2356.52] Curry: It had all those GPU cores to do stuff with. [2359.56] Curry: But if you can make the hardware specialized a bit like DJI has, [2364.6] Curry: then you can put it into something small. [2366.68] Stephen: And you've got to wait for an OS to boot when you fly as well. [2369.32] Stephen: That's not just like... [2370.44] Stephen: I mean, DJI does take a second or two to get going, [2373.0] Stephen: but it's only a handful of seconds. [2374.68] Stephen: You're waiting for a Raspberry Pi to boot. [2376.36] Stephen: That could be 30 seconds before you can fly, [2378.52] Stephen: which is a little bit irritating. [2380.36] Curry: A lot of open HD is written... is Pelscripts running. [2384.04] Curry: You can literally see them starting up and running [2386.28] Curry: and doing this and doing that. [2387.56] Curry: It's a whole lot of stuff. [2389.88] Curry: I mean, it's still quite impressive that it works at all, frankly. [2394.2] Curry: But it's no good just throwing more power at it [2398.76] Curry: and saying, like, oh, well, the next Raspberry Pi [2401.64] Curry: is going to run faster and have more cores. [2405.64] Curry: You want to be more specialized in the approach, [2408.76] Curry: which you're only going to get from building specialized hardware. [2412.28] Curry: So I'm trying to get in and talk to the guys developing it [2417.4] Curry: to see how they're getting on. [2419.4] Curry: I said I would do it after I got this stupid thing to fly. [2424.04] Curry: This is literally my Raspberry Pi bolted on the side [2427.16] Curry: because it won't fit. [2427.8] Curry: Did you get it in the air? [2430.36] Curry: Yeah, only in the garden until that... [2432.68] Curry: Because it's got such a stupid camera, the ribbon cable... [2435.8] Curry: It's like Tupperware core. [2436.68] Stephen: Oh, you're still waiting for a new ribbon cable. [2439.8] Curry: Well, it's not that. [2440.76] Curry: It's like that entire camera has a non-replaceable cable. [2444.76] Curry: As soon as you rip the cable, which I did and one of them, [2447.8] Curry: you're screwed. [2448.68] Curry: So I'm trying to order the better camera. [2451.4] Curry: Is that the autopilot one? [2453.4] Curry: The autopilot one, but it's out of stock everywhere at the moment. [2455.88] Curry: So I'm still waiting for that [2457.08] Curry: because that's the one that's going to go in the plane. [2459.08] Curry: And the plane has the ocean board, [2461.8] Curry: which looks a lot nicer. [2464.04] Curry: That is the Compute Module 4 with the Oaken board. [2468.52] Curry: And that's got a proper... [2470.84] Curry: JST plug, so you can just plug stuff in [2475.64] Curry: and have it work a bit better. [2477.8] Curry: So that's hopefully the way forward. [2480.52] Curry: But right now, I can't imagine going out flying too much [2485.24] Curry: because it's bloody miserable out there, isn't it? [2488.36] Curry: It's just even in a nice sunny day, [2490.92] Curry: I'm feeling like I could die out here. [2492.92] Curry: In fact, I was pissing about trying to get this stupid thing flying [2497.56] Curry: that I stupidly accepted to say, [2499.48] Curry: yeah, that's the quick thing to review. [2501.64] Curry: And a man came up to me [2502.84] Curry: because I was literally sat on the floor in a field [2505.8] Curry: talking to this stupid quad. [2507.16] Curry: Because how about you guys? [2508.68] Curry: I often chat to my electronics when they're misbehaving. [2514.92] Jack: Is there someone that looks after you? [2518.12] Curry: Someone literally came up and says, [2519.96] Curry: are you okay? [2521.08] Curry: And I had to answer, I'm fine. [2523.8] Curry: I'm just here playing with some toys, [2525.64] Curry: which makes it sound even worse, if anything. [2529.64] Curry: I don't know if you went away feeling reassured or not. [2532.44] Tony: Well, you were outside [2534.76] Tony: and you might have thought you found some mags [2537.24] Tony: and now you're playing with some toys, right? [2539.64] Curry: Yeah, perhaps he was around there hunting for his, [2543.72] Curry: his bring and buy. [2546.12] Stephen: Like the Blue Peter, poor bring and buy sales. [2548.12] Stephen: A common source of concern [2549.72] Stephen: when I worked with a bunch of software developers [2551.56] Stephen: that the muttering would turn into shouting [2553.64] Stephen: and just general sorts of annoyed soliloquies [2558.28] Stephen: vented across the office. [2559.72] Stephen: And it just happens. [2561.48] Stephen: Fewer people go to a store [2562.76] Stephen: when they mutter about their machinery. [2564.52] Stephen: You don't want to bottle it up. [2567.57] Jack: I think Frank's already got all Astro gloves. [2570.53] Frank: Yeah, I've had my Astro gloves for a couple of years. [2575.09] Frank: They are really good and that's why I recommend them. [2581.25] Tony: Only if you go outside. [2583.33] Curry: It feels like they want an extra bit like, [2586.53] Curry: because the Astro gloves have that, [2587.65] Curry: it's basically from a forefinger, isn't it? [2589.49] Curry: As I watched it, so you could do that. [2591.09] Curry: But I want this little extra thing [2592.77] Curry: just to pop the cap back on your thumb [2595.33] Curry: when you finished. [2596.61] Curry: To cover back up again. [2598.53] Stephen: Yeah, it's like a momentary release thumb. [2601.81] Curry: Yeah, a little literally roll back or something. [2605.81] Curry: Like you go like Spider-Man, [2607.73] Curry: except with web shooting out, [2609.81] Curry: the little gloves go which, [2611.17] Curry: and go back over the thumbs. [2612.69] Curry: Because even just exposing your thumbs and doing this, [2616.61] Curry: you're like, [2617.49] Stephen: Can you have a glove that goes along the top of your thumb [2619.89] Stephen: but leaves the pad of the thumb to, you know, to grip things? [2623.65] Frank: Just cut a tiny little hole. [2626.61] Frank: Small hole in some gloves. [2627.89] Stephen: Just the thumb prints. [2631.25] Stephen: It's got bloody cold, [2632.29] Stephen: especially when you're standing in a field [2633.65] Stephen: and the wind gets up. [2634.69] Stephen: It's no good. [2636.13] Frank: Can you show them on screen? [2637.41] Frank: I'll go grab them. [2639.57] Stephen: I am pleasantly surprised by the new cameras though. [2643.25] Stephen: Everything just seems to work much better [2645.01] Stephen: than it used to. [2645.73] Stephen: When I started flying, [2646.77] Stephen: I couldn't fly anything past about four o'clock this time of year. [2651.17] Stephen: It's too dark, but everything seems much happier with low light now. [2657.01] Curry: Isn't the sun annoying? [2658.53] Curry: It's like wintertime. [2659.57] Curry: Where's the sun get to? [2660.61] Curry: It gets up to eye line and then goes back down again. [2663.09] Curry: It gets dark. [2666.45] Jack: Look at that. [2667.65] Jack: He loves them. [2669.17] Jack: And for everyone who, [2671.25] Jack: yeah, need help. [2671.89] Jack: He looks so much happier now. [2673.33] Jack: Everyone who's listening. [2674.53] Jack: He loves them. [2675.09] Stephen: So much happier. [2677.49] Curry: It feels like something like your nan would buy you new gloves for [2682.13] Curry: because she's seen your ones and they're broken. [2684.05] Frank: I think it's just sort of over quite a bit of wear. [2691.49] Frank: Like they are slightly fraying along there, [2694.05] Frank: but they're like sewed up double. [2695.81] Frank: So they're not going to fall apart. [2697.65] Frank: Is it a neoprene? [2698.69] Frank: I can't tell what the fabric is. [2701.65] Frank: Don't know. [2702.93] Frank: It's fairly thick, fairly size, but it's... [2707.09] Stephen: I like foamy wetsuit material. [2709.73] Tony: Yeah, a little bit. [2711.25] Tony: They probably just were wetsuit gloves at the start of the show. [2715.25] UNKNOWN: Yeah. [2715.89] Jack: They need some trimion on them so you could see your hands. [2721.17] Jack: Like trimion markers. [2722.45] Jack: But the trouble is that's radioactive, isn't it? [2724.45] Jack: I don't know. [2725.25] Jack: I hate radiation. [2727.97] Stephen: I'm not flawless. [2731.65] Stephen: It reminds me of an excellent plan, sir, [2734.61] Stephen: except for two small drawbacks. [2737.49] Stephen: We don't have any trimion markers. [2740.85] Stephen: Trimion markers are completely radioactive [2743.49] Stephen: from a kill us nun 15 minutes. [2745.33] Stephen: After that, solid plan, sir. [2747.33] Jack: No, they kill you very slowly. [2751.17] Jack: Not instant, no. [2755.17] Jack: But I think it's beta radiation does suck a bit [2759.41] Jack: because obviously it gets in there [2761.49] Jack: and it's strong enough to penetrate [2764.13] Jack: but doesn't get all the way through. [2765.73] Curry: That's what I'm sure you said. [2766.85] Curry: If you're going to get a whole nuclear thing, [2767.97] Curry: surely that's just going to like, [2769.17] Curry: oh, this is nice and warming, these nuclear rocks. [2771.17] Jack: Yeah, like the bonus warming feature. [2774.37] Stephen: Well, that's what they do in space aircraft, [2776.13] Stephen: isn't it, to stop stuff freezing up. [2777.89] Stephen: They just literally put like a small kind of nuclear power supply [2782.37] Stephen: that just pumps out a bit of heat. [2785.17] Jack: Really? [2786.53] Stephen: I'm pretty sure, yeah. [2789.57] Stephen: Keep things going along. [2791.17] Stephen: Electronics don't like being super cold. [2793.97] Jack: Yeah. [2795.01] Jack: I can imagine. [2798.69] Jack: I bought some of the old conformal coatings. [2801.17] Jack: I've got to do my ESCs. [2803.33] Jack: Because if I do, miraculously do go flying. [2806.45] Jack: I'll probably cook them in the wet. [2811.09] Tony: It might be wet New Year's Eve or when you're out. [2815.97] Stephen: Just don't land on wet grass in the dark. [2818.53] Stephen: You'll be fine. [2820.29] Curry: Bit hard not to see. [2822.05] Curry: Catch it. [2823.17] Curry: Flying in the dark. [2824.29] Jack: What's everyone's in the dark? [2826.37] Jack: Beyond fire. [2828.13] Jack: Fire means lie. [2831.49] Tony: I just don't fly in the dark. [2833.41] Stephen: Yeah, I was just going to say, [2834.61] Stephen: what's your preferred night flying get up? [2838.13] Stephen: Everyone knows your retail and everything works well, [2840.53] Stephen: but anything else? [2842.61] Frank: I did a poll in the chat as well, [2846.13] Frank: during the show about what's everyone's favorite [2849.73] Frank: night flying add-on. [2853.33] Frank: Leading is LEDs at 45%. [2857.49] Frank: The next one is Starlight Cameras. [2861.01] Frank: Third one is Runny Great Torch [2863.33] Frank: and out the rear is pyrotechnics. [2866.77] Curry: Possibly the most important that's not on there [2869.25] Curry: is landing lights. [2871.41] Curry: Because as long as you know where you're coming back, [2874.21] Curry: that's much more important than LEDs. [2876.05] Curry: Like, oh, I can see the quad over there. [2877.57] Curry: That's that's no good when you're trying to find your way. [2880.21] Frank: I was thinking of Runny Great Torch as like, [2884.13] Frank: also that it could be like headlights on your car, [2887.17] Frank: lighting up where you are or whatever. [2888.85] Stephen: Yeah, I find LEDs that seem great when you're about to take off, [2893.49] Stephen: but then you get in the air and you kind of realize [2895.81] Stephen: LEDs, they only really illuminate where you are. [2899.65] Stephen: And if you're not near the ground, it doesn't really help. [2903.01] Stephen: You can't see anything. [2903.97] Stephen: And then you're trying to get near the ground, [2905.57] Stephen: which isn't necessarily conducive to say flying. [2910.05] Jack: That's the opposite of what you want to do. [2913.41] Jack: The bloody great bonfire could have been on the list. [2918.05] Curry: I knew someone that used to like flying at night, [2920.61] Curry: but didn't want to attract attention. [2922.45] Curry: So he used infrared lights. [2925.65] Curry: And then he had an infrared sensitive camera, [2928.13] Curry: which is a nice way of doing things. [2929.89] Curry: If anybody saw it completely dark in the field, [2932.37] Curry: and he was just coming to land. [2933.89] Stephen: He loves the IR filter, can't you, on your regular cams? [2937.17] Curry: Yeah, if you've got one of those little things you can put out. [2942.53] Curry: Sometimes they seem like fixed on. [2945.25] Curry: Sometimes they're just literally a little filter [2946.93] Curry: you can take away. [2947.65] Curry: Sometimes it's like a fixed in thing. [2949.65] Curry: And sometimes it's on the lens. [2950.85] Curry: Sometimes it's on the sensor. [2952.21] Jack: Yeah, that's what I got used to be able to buy [2956.53] Jack: my IR sensitive cameras, couldn't you? [2959.89] Jack: And they used to like, you'd fly during the day [2961.97] Jack: and everything would appear blue. [2964.21] Jack: This is like tinge to everything. [2967.01] Tony: Didn't someone, we know, make one something a few years ago, [2971.73] Tony: put it on the front of a quad. [2973.89] Frank: Carlos, I'm sure, has done quite a bit on that kind of thing. [2978.05] Frank: I remember he used to buzz everyone with their campfires [2984.21] Frank: with his wing at some point. [2986.53] Tony: What about him tuning in and watching him? [2988.77] Tony: It was all green. [2990.69] Jack: All I was going to say is Tony, [2993.09] Jack: was the iDrone had this guy next to him at a stall once [2999.57] Jack: and they had the high powered IR floodlight thing. [3006.13] Jack: And he sold them at the show [3008.37] Jack: and then we never saw them ever again. [3010.45] Tony: Yeah, I don't know what happened. [3011.89] Tony: I didn't do well. [3014.61] Tony: I remember it being quite big [3015.97] Tony: and then having to put GoPro on as well. [3017.97] Tony: It was just like too much. [3019.65] Stephen: Yeah. [3020.61] Stephen: I was going to ask if anyone tried out [3022.21] Stephen: the Menace RC Cop LEDs yet. [3026.85] Curry: No, I didn't. [3029.09] Curry: I did get a ping from Greg about getting some [3031.17] Curry: but he didn't reply as yet. [3034.05] Stephen: I've got to say, I just had a quad [3036.05] Stephen: that's the right shape to fit them on. [3037.97] Stephen: I'm scratching my head thinking, [3039.89] Stephen: where can I mount them? [3042.61] Jack: Wynn has them. [3043.57] Jack: I've seen him do some stuff with them. [3046.61] Jack: And he bought some at [3053.01] Jack: Western Park, I think. [3055.01] Jack: And he's posted some stuff from his workbench and that. [3059.33] Jack: So, Wynn, did you ever do anything [3061.73] Jack: with that LED board I sent you? [3063.49] Jack: Because I've got so many of those. [3067.97] Jack: If anyone wants a Maytec LED board, let me know. [3072.69] Jack: You can have it for shipping price. [3075.25] Tony: Nine grand. [3078.29] Stephen: Yeah, so I was going to try and build a quad [3080.21] Stephen: with the Menace Cop LED boards, [3083.25] Stephen: which aren't just the same as the LEDs [3086.05] Stephen: you have from Maytec and so forth. [3087.57] Stephen: Those are the large EB ones. [3088.85] Stephen: The Menace ones are these giant Cop ones [3091.41] Stephen: that you see in high power floodlights. [3093.57] Stephen: And they look quite impressive. [3095.89] Stephen: But you do need a special converter board [3099.49] Stephen: to run the power to them. [3100.61] Stephen: And they hook directly into the battery [3102.21] Stephen: so you don't just run them off of flight control [3104.13] Stephen: off the modest five volt supply. [3106.13] Stephen: Goes directly from the main battery. [3108.05] Stephen: You've got to kind of calculate the right number [3109.89] Stephen: that you can string along [3111.01] Stephen: according to what voltage and things. [3113.09] Stephen: I'm going to put out an absolute ton of light. [3115.17] Stephen: But I'm just worried if it's misty, [3117.09] Stephen: then that's just going to create [3118.29] Stephen: a really bright haze in front of the quad. [3120.29] Stephen: So I have to see how that works. [3122.05] Curry: I wonder how far they'll be visible from. [3123.33] Curry: Because I mentioned it before. [3124.53] Curry: We had a friend that ran LEDs on 4S [3127.49] Curry: directly from his wing. [3128.93] Curry: And we could see it from 10 kilometers away [3130.93] Curry: when he turned them on. [3131.65] Curry: Really? [3132.77] Curry: Yeah. [3133.67] Curry: That night. [3135.43] Curry: And it was just like, [3137.11] Curry: it just lit up. [3138.87] Curry: Absolute miles away. [3139.91] Curry: That was probably as Daniel was one [3142.23] Tony: where he put on his quad. [3144.15] Curry: No, that's pretty much the sun on his stuff, isn't it? [3149.19] Curry: Just lighting up entire forests. [3151.27] Tony: That was bad though. [3153.59] Jack: I've never seen anything like it. [3157.03] Tony: Yeah. [3157.43] Tony: If you haven't seen that, go and watch that. [3160.15] Tony: Was it RC test flight? [3162.71] Stephen: Oh, Menace LED. [3165.03] Stephen: Richard Warwick in the chat has posted a link [3168.79] Stephen: to his Menace LED testing. [3172.71] Stephen: Looks very interesting. [3175.35] Curry: So are these more for seeing yourself in the air [3178.47] Curry: or trying to light up where you're going? [3182.15] Curry: Because it always seems too localized. [3183.83] Curry: You need to sort of project in front of yourself, [3185.83] Curry: don't you, to see where you want to go? [3188.31] Stephen: Well, they are kind of planar. [3190.07] Stephen: They're like a 2D strip of LED element. [3195.27] Stephen: Funny things, I haven't seen them before, [3196.95] Stephen: but they're just like yellow stripes in each one. [3202.55] Tony: My mountain bike literally does go quite far, [3207.51] Tony: but it's just got such a massive spread [3209.51] Tony: so you can see both sides of the trail. [3213.51] Stephen: I guess if you were trying to direct it, [3215.27] Stephen: you'd put a reflect around it like torches have. [3217.75] Stephen: So it hasn't got that. [3219.03] Stephen: It's just going to be unidirectional. [3221.91] Jack: I think the idea of it is for racers, [3225.51] Jack: it's sort of like the thing that the DRL should have gone with. [3232.31] Stephen: Custom colors and stuff like that. [3235.43] Stephen: Don't they have that on the big DRL courts? [3237.43] Stephen: They've all got different colors, haven't they? [3238.87] Jack: Yeah, I think that's the idea of them. [3244.07] Jack: Should we call it there? [3246.39] Jack: Aye. [3246.95] Jack: We have a successfully completed an LDO. [3253.03] Jack: You've been listed to LeSho now. [3254.39] Jack: Thank you, guys. [3255.51] Jack: Massive thank you to all our Patreons [3257.99] Jack: and everyone who donate [3259.59] Jack: and everyone who tunes into this show. [3261.83] Jack: Don't forget, if you're listening to this on iTunes, [3264.79] Jack: we are live every Thursday, 8pm to 9pm. [3269.51] Jack: What show is this again? [3271.59] Jack: UK time. [3273.19] Jack: Let's drone out. [3275.19] Jack: Oh, right. [3276.23] Stephen: At Let's Drone. [3277.03] Stephen: What is the Let's Drone out network with Let's Drone out? [3280.87] Jack: On LDO FM. [3283.59] Curry: It's been Let's Drone out production. [3286.39] Jack: Yeah, also by Let's Drone out. [3289.83] Jack: Thank you, guys. [3291.35] Jack: You've been joined by Andrew Sashrank. [3293.19] Frank: Bye. [3294.39] Jack: Everyone's favourite curry kitten. [3296.55] Jack: Goodbye. [3297.99] Jack: My little darling wife. [3299.75] Tony: Munch too. [3301.35] Jack: And Stephen. [3303.11] Jack: Cheers. [3303.99] Jack: And I'll be right until I fly. [3305.27] Jack: Thank you, guys. [3306.07] Jack: Good night.
