[0.0] Jack: Hello! And you're listening to Let's Drone Out, a special thank you to our lovely patrons that helped donate, so that we could pay the editor to remove the swear words and silly things we say. Massive thank you to...
[14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos!
[16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner!
[18.0] Jack: Sam Dahmer!
[20.0] Frank: Mikey Dread!
[22.0] Frank: On with the show!
[24.0] Frank: Let's Drone Out!
[54.86] Stephen: And welcome to Let's Drone Out!
[56.86] Stephen: Joined by everyone's favourite, Curry Kitten.
[58.86] Stephen: Hello!
[60.86] Stephen: The irascible ever-present Jack.
[62.86] Jack: Hello.
[64.86] Stephen: And myself, Stephen.
[66.86] Stephen: Hello.
[68.86] Stephen: Join us for another night of no fixed agenda, FPV and related subject discussion.
[74.86] Curry: It's a good intro, but I really didn't think you believed I was everyone's favourite Curry Kitten. When Jack says it, he believes it.
[80.86] Stephen: There's a certain homage that he's paying every single time when he says that.
[84.86] Jack: It's true.
[86.86] Jack: He's my favourite. He was even more my favourite.
[90.86] Jack: But, he no longer plays Curry Kitten Wednesday with me.
[95.86] Jack: So, I've been distraught.
[98.86] Jack: What was Curry Kitten Wednesday?
[100.86] Stephen: Let's go and plunge into that gutter and see where it takes us.
[104.86] Stephen: What even... I've missed this myself.
[107.86] Jack: We used to play sh** adventure games together.
[111.86] Jack: You know those things that died out in the 90s?
[114.86] Curry: No.
[115.86] Curry: You must have played like a LucasArts-style clicking...
[119.86] Curry: Oh, like David Tentacle Adventure.
[121.86] Curry: Yeah, yeah.
[123.86] Stephen: Yeah, yeah.
[125.86] Stephen: Yeah, David Tentacle.
[127.86] Jack: Yeah.
[128.86] Jack: Yeah, David Tentacle.
[129.86] Jack: They really made that and everything, Curry.
[131.86] Jack: We could have enjoyed that together.
[133.86] Stephen: They've remade everything. There's literally no new ideas left in the world.
[137.86] Curry: No, everything's a remake.
[139.86] Curry: Here's the problem.
[141.86] Curry: With me attempting to play...
[143.86] Curry: Let's just air all our dirty laundry here.
[145.86] Curry: With me trying to play adventure games remotely is...
[148.86] Curry: I fall asleep.
[150.86] Curry: I think I have sort of borderline narcolepsy when it comes to evenings and reading.
[154.86] Curry: It's like...
[156.86] Curry: So, sometimes Jack will be playing the game and my Twitch stream will do it like this.
[161.86] Stephen: Well, it doesn't seem to keep me awake playing those games.
[164.86] Stephen: It was the fact that you had to, like,
[166.86] Stephen: obsessively click the mouse on every single pixel in the screens
[170.86] Stephen: about every five minutes when you presented the puzzle and made no sense to us.
[173.86] Curry: Oh, yeah. We all had good time pixel hunting, didn't we?
[175.86] Curry: Yeah.
[176.86] Curry: Let's move the mouse along and along and along and along.
[178.86] Stephen: Yeah, so much so that...
[180.86] Stephen: It's like a major teenage programmer going through their first drug experience
[183.86] Stephen: and made no bloody sense to anyone.
[185.86] Stephen: So you just had to click every pixel.
[187.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[188.86] Jack: There was...
[190.86] Jack: The last game I was playing, we had to...
[195.86] Jack: We were collecting specks of dust from the pixel.
[199.86] Jack: Of course you were.
[200.86] Jack: Yeah.
[201.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[202.86] Stephen: Sounds perfectly plausible, probably to get a roll of string,
[205.86] Stephen: which you then had to do to get a baked potato for a wizard
[208.86] Stephen: who would help you with your quest.
[212.86] Jack: I saw that you'd been rickrolling people.
[216.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[217.86] Stephen: Let's get the bad news out of the way, because this happened.
[221.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[222.86] Stephen: So long.
[223.86] Stephen: I turned a flight controller into a piece of burnt silicon
[227.86] Stephen: with the consistency of chocolate fudge.
[231.86] Curry: It's not quite in focus, but the flight controller looks slightly blacker than...
[235.86] Stephen: It's a lot black, Harry.
[237.86] Stephen: It's kind of a consistency where you could just pull wires out of it by hand
[241.86] Stephen: and it just bends and sort of lets go...
[243.86] Stephen: It's not good.
[244.86] Stephen: It's not how flight controller should be.
[246.86] Stephen: How the hell did you do that?
[247.86] Stephen: I flew one pack on it and it was perfectly fine.
[249.86] Stephen: I flew a second pack on it and I got, I think, one minute 20 into the flight
[253.86] Stephen: and I noticed that I'd lost control and it was pitching towards the ground.
[256.86] Stephen: I took the goggles off and witnessed a beautiful plume of white smoke
[259.86] Stephen: appearing over the field.
[261.86] Stephen: I have no damn idea.
[264.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[265.86] Stephen: All I can think of is that the wires from the capacitor might have had some abuse
[268.86] Stephen: and they ended up touching each other.
[271.86] Stephen: I have no idea, really.
[272.86] Stephen: It flew one pack beautifully.
[275.86] Curry: I think the flight controller became self-aware,
[277.86] Curry: decided it was cold and wanted to warm itself up with disastrous consequences.
[281.86] Stephen: Had enough of that.
[282.86] Stephen: It had been in two other models before,
[284.86] Stephen: so the capacitor had been in two other models before.
[286.86] Stephen: I think maybe the wires just got bent around a wee bit.
[289.86] Stephen: But yeah, I've been rickrolling people like blooming crazy
[293.86] Stephen: because I just had a desire to monkey around with ESCs
[297.86] Stephen: and I figured that Bluejay was the way to do it
[301.86] Stephen: because they were talking about this feature of,
[303.86] Stephen: oh, we're going to implement custom D-shot beakers.
[305.86] Stephen: So now you can be really annoying
[308.86] Stephen: and instead of just playing startup tune,
[311.86] Stephen: which is only mildly annoying,
[313.86] Stephen: you can then make your D-shot beeper play the startup tune.
[317.86] Stephen: So any time you land in front of someone and hit the beeper,
[320.86] Stephen: instead of it going beep, beep, beep,
[322.86] Stephen: it plays your startup tune.
[325.86] Stephen: Yeah, and I spent an enormous amount of time making this happen
[328.86] Stephen: for no good reason whatsoever
[330.86] Stephen: and that's how I've been making myself happy this week.
[334.86] Stephen: And then I posted videos about it
[337.86] Stephen: because I'm sure that was the right thing to do.
[339.86] Jack: Yeah, I was really excited when I saw that you posted a video
[344.86] Jack: and then I click on it and it was the worst thing ever.
[351.86] Jack: I posted another one after that.
[354.86] Jack: I have not seen that.
[357.86] Jack: And also, speaking of videos I watched,
[360.86] Jack: I saw that Curry Kitten done a bit of SMD soldering
[364.86] Jack: and soldered a resistor to an R9 module.
[370.86] Curry: Yeah, one of the few times Jack's decided to comment on my videos
[374.86] Curry: is because he doesn't like my soldering.
[376.86] Curry: I can tell because he says,
[378.86] Curry: I've got some flux here to give you.
[380.86] Curry: I think we know what that means.
[383.86] Curry: Like I said, it doesn't have to be pretty.
[386.86] Curry: It just has to be functional.
[388.86] Curry: To convert the R9 module,
[390.86] Curry: if you've got the ACC ST version,
[393.86] Curry: you need to solder on a resistor.
[394.86] Curry: If you've got the access version, you don't.
[396.86] Curry: It's super simple.
[398.86] Curry: And if you've got the little nano versions,
[403.86] Curry: you need to use the ST link to flash them.
[406.86] Curry: So I went middle of the road in my...
[409.86] Curry: So you didn't need an ST link, but you did need soldering.
[412.86] Jack: Correct.
[414.86] Jack: It was the capacitor side.
[417.86] Jack: The transistor side or regulator side was lovely.
[421.86] Jack: And the other end of that resistor
[426.86] Jack: that was soldered to the capacitor
[428.86] Jack: looked like you'd done it with your front teeth.
[431.86] Curry: Yeah, that wasn't pretty.
[433.86] Curry: When I turned it round to show people,
[435.86] Curry: I looked at it and said,
[436.86] Curry: oh, that doesn't look very good, does it?
[438.86] Curry: And I thought, never mind.
[439.86] Curry: Because the question is...
[442.86] Curry: Well, the answer is it's not about looking good.
[444.86] Curry: It's about functionality.
[446.86] Curry: And I'm quite happy to show the fact that
[448.86] Curry: A, I managed to cock up during that video
[450.86] Curry: and go TX to TX and RX to RX
[453.86] Curry: and embarrass myself on Discord groups.
[455.86] Curry: Why doesn't this work?
[457.86] Curry: I didn't bring that up.
[459.86] Curry: Well, so I'm quite happy to show that
[461.86] Curry: you don't have to be a soldering expert
[463.86] Curry: to make it work.
[464.86] Curry: You just have to...
[467.86] Curry: Ooh, ooh, ooh.
[468.86] Curry: Space bear your way together.
[470.86] Jack: People don't know about a space bear.
[474.86] Curry: Well, it can be the little thing.
[476.86] Curry: A space bear is just a clutchy way of doing things.
[479.86] Curry: It was actually Jack typing like this.
[482.86] Curry: In which you had to get one letter of it right
[486.86] Curry: and just match the keyboard with the rest.
[489.86] Curry: But yeah, you can be quite messy,
[491.86] Curry: but it doesn't matter if it still works.
[493.86] Curry: As long as there's a decent joint there.
[495.86] Curry: There was a decent joint
[496.86] Curry: because there was lots and lots of solder.
[499.86] Curry: Oh, I can't believe you're showing that.
[501.86] Stephen: The black bits, I think, make it work better, don't they?
[504.86] Stephen: That's right.
[505.86] Stephen: Yeah.
[506.86] Stephen: Right.
[507.86] Curry: I think that's been very short.
[508.86] Curry: What a noise joke.
[509.86] Curry: It wasn't that bad.
[510.86] Stephen: Yeah, yeah.
[511.86] Stephen: Looks like an MS paint job.
[512.86] Curry: Here's the thing,
[514.86] Curry: because I spent so long concentrating on the hard side
[517.86] Curry: when I did the other side.
[518.86] Curry: I was like, this would be easy.
[519.86] Curry: That's just a ground plane.
[522.86] Jack: Like, you know, you could have just scraped anything off.
[528.86] Curry: I don't know.
[529.86] Curry: I was just following the instructions.
[531.86] Curry: The instructions are not always great in this defence.
[533.86] Curry: I didn't think the instructions were very...
[536.86] Curry: They weren't very good pictures on the instructions,
[538.86] Curry: so that's why I wanted to show people in great detail
[540.86] Curry: about where I did it.
[541.86] Curry: So there.
[545.53] Stephen: Yeah, there's a...
[546.53] Stephen: The documentation size is a weakness of Express LRS
[549.53] Stephen: because it's often done by people
[551.53] Stephen: who don't need to read the documentation
[553.53] Stephen: and think that they've been exceedingly verbose
[555.53] Stephen: and put more detail on as applicable.
[557.53] Stephen: And actually, it just makes no sense
[559.53] Stephen: unless you do it 200 times a day.
[562.53] Curry: Exactly.
[563.53] Curry: Exactly.
[564.53] Curry: Yeah.
[565.53] Curry: But I did manage to fly.
[566.53] Curry: I went out and I tested those
[568.53] Curry: in conditions that I could only say were very English.
[573.53] Curry: I had a very grey day with mist
[576.53] Curry: on a camera that did not like bad light,
[579.53] Curry: and then my goggles fogged up.
[581.53] Curry: So I was trying to come in and I was like,
[583.53] Curry: it's getting more misty, and it's not.
[584.53] Curry: It's just my goggles are fogging.
[586.53] Curry: And I'm coming in at sort of 80K
[588.53] Curry: and thinking I'm going to have to try and land this
[590.53] Curry: because if I don't land it exactly,
[593.53] Stephen: I'll be in the lake.
[595.53] Stephen: People don't believe me when I tell them about
[597.53] Stephen: our weather and lighting conditions.
[599.53] Stephen: They think, oh, no, no, no, you want that.
[601.53] Stephen: 120FPS DJI camera is beautifully smooth.
[604.53] Stephen: But what you really want in the UK
[608.53] Stephen: for about two thirds of the year
[610.53] Stephen: is something that just captures every damn photon it can find
[614.53] Stephen: and not necessarily gives you perfect colour balance
[617.53] Stephen: or low latency.
[618.53] Stephen: You just want to be able to actually see things.
[621.53] Curry: I just like to know where I'm going
[623.53] Curry: and I like to be able to spot my landing mat and hit it
[627.53] Curry: so I don't land in the lake.
[629.53] Curry: And then I'm happy.
[632.53] Curry: But yeah, so I managed to get out once this week,
[635.53] Curry: fly successfully with one quad.
[637.53] Curry: My open HD quad decided to break down
[640.53] Curry: on reasons unknown to me so far.
[643.53] Curry: I'm still going through it trying to figure out
[645.53] Curry: what the problem is.
[646.53] Stephen: You suggested it might be sentience earlier.
[650.53] Curry: Again, it's become self-aware,
[652.53] Curry: it's decided to do its own thing.
[654.53] Curry: There's no obvious failures like there normally is.
[656.53] Curry: Normally, if I blow something up,
[658.53] Curry: something goes wrong and tells me about it.
[660.53] Curry: But both ends of the pie are saying I'm working
[663.53] Curry: and the other side saying I'm working too
[665.53] Curry: but they are not sending a video or receiving video together.
[669.53] Curry: So either I've made a massive cock up on the config file
[672.53] Curry: that I can't spot or there's some sort of element
[675.53] Curry: that's broken but having swapped out all the elements,
[678.53] Curry: I can't figure out what that is yet.
[680.53] Stephen: You've taken it out once in January,
[683.53] Stephen: it may have just decided it's had enough of the weather
[685.53] Stephen: and it's wet and you need to turn your back
[687.53] Stephen: and it's connected to Spain.
[689.53] Curry: Yeah, the nice people in the Discord open HD group
[693.53] Curry: are looking at my config file to see if there's anything bad happened
[697.53] Curry: but I can't figure out.
[698.53] Jack: So when they're picking through everything...
[703.53] Curry: I'm not too worried because I've only changed like two lines.
[706.53] Curry: I was like, I think so.
[708.53] Curry: Unless I've started sleep editing files.
[712.53] Curry: I've just come in and put like ASCII art of boobs and stuff in it.
[715.53] Curry: I don't know.
[716.53] Curry: Who knows what goes on.
[718.53] Curry: That is funny.
[719.53] Jack: I had a little adventure last night.
[722.53] Jack: I put together the Express and Arrests,
[727.53] Jack: the IY module.
[729.53] Curry: Oh, you got your parts through.
[731.53] Curry: They hadn't come yet, had they?
[732.53] Jack: Yeah.
[733.53] Jack: That's sweet.
[734.53] Jack: And yeah, got it together, got it up and working.
[739.53] Jack: You didn't waste a lot of time doing that, did you?
[741.53] Jack: Yeah, I flashed it.
[743.53] Jack: It was literally a resistor and a capacitor really,
[746.53] Jack: more than anything.
[747.53] Jack: And then...
[748.53] Curry: We should have called it if you needed some help solving that.
[752.53] Jack: Yeah, I know.
[753.53] Curry: You've got the screen on there as well.
[755.53] Jack: Yeah.
[756.53] Jack: Yep.
[757.53] Jack: And yeah, maybe we should order a kit from Failsafe to send Currie Kitten.
[765.53] Jack: Yeah.
[767.53] Curry: I'll tell you what it is.
[769.53] Curry: Here's my excuses.
[771.53] Curry: I can't see.
[773.53] Curry: I've got my special advisor.
[777.53] Curry: I'm just not very good at it and I don't care enough about it.
[781.53] Curry: Sometimes it's neat.
[782.53] Curry: I check it out.
[783.53] Curry: I've got Failsafe to build mine for me.
[784.53] Stephen: I check it out.
[785.53] Stephen: I'm like, nah.
[787.53] Curry: I just get manufacturers to send me them so then I don't have to make them.
[792.53] Curry: Does that count?
[793.53] Stephen: I can do WOOP flight controllers.
[795.53] Stephen: But one thing, trusting a WOOP flight controller to stay together,
[798.53] Stephen: it's kind of another thing, trusting your TX module.
[801.53] Stephen: You've got to really believe you're good at soldering.
[803.53] Stephen: And I guess fundamentally, I just don't believe I'm good at soldering.
[806.53] Jack: It's not too bad, man.
[808.53] Jack: There's some castellations and stuff.
[810.53] Jack: I've done a bit of drag soldering and that.
[812.53] Jack: Okay.
[813.53] Jack: But, you know, it's, you know, it kind of like, it just really sort of like
[821.53] Jack: worked out.
[822.53] Jack: It's pretty, you know, it's pretty good.
[824.53] Jack: Flashed it.
[825.53] Jack: But, yeah, I've just got to decide.
[832.53] Jack: I just thought of something.
[834.53] Curry: There's a lot of people going on about like, oh, yeah, yeah.
[839.53] Curry: Kerry's soldering skills are hilarious.
[841.53] Curry: And people saying that it's not even worth comparing your soldering skills
[845.53] Curry: to jackets, whole new level.
[847.53] Curry: Show that clip of when you've got plugged it in and literally every ear see
[851.53] Curry: bursts into flames because how every doesn't matter how beautiful your
[855.53] Curry: soldiers and joints are.
[856.53] Curry: If you wire them up the wrong way round, what's the point?
[859.53] Jack: I know that was very stressful.
[861.53] Jack: That was like back in the days of not having a multimeter.
[865.53] Jack: And, you know, those Afro fun, horrible green PCB like PDBs that, you know,
[877.53] Jack: just remember PDBs full stop like like they made no sense.
[883.53] Jack: It was not kiss.
[884.53] Jack: It made no sense at all.
[887.53] Jack: It was like, I think I've still got one somewhere.
[891.53] Jack: Hang on.
[892.53] Stephen: Let me find the days before people heard of TVS diodes.
[896.53] Stephen: You would just put it round the wrong way.
[902.64] Jack: They were awful.
[904.64] Jack: Plus, they were the cheapest DSEs known to man.
[907.64] Jack: But it made such a good video.
[909.64] Jack: But the only the only downside of it was the copper wire when it turned
[919.64] Jack: into plasma, some of it like flew off and melted into my computer.
[925.64] Stephen: Sweet Jesus, that really was a burn then.
[928.64] Stephen: It actually exploded like I've seen things go up but quite stationary sort of,
[933.64] Stephen: you know, oh, it's on fire now.
[935.64] Stephen: Oh, well, that's annoying.
[936.64] Stephen: Not like there are bits everywhere.
[939.64] Stephen: Not that degree.
[941.64] Curry: Frank is saying you had a smoke stopper on the desk.
[944.64] Curry: So why didn't you plug that in before you did I have a smoke stopper?
[948.64] Stephen: I've got many lists on the edge.
[950.64] Curry: Frank says.
[951.64] Stephen: Frank, you can't expect him to go.
[952.64] Stephen: Where's the where's the excitement?
[954.64] Stephen: Smoke stopper.
[956.64] Stephen: I've got a kitten there.
[958.64] Stephen: How is the kitty?
[961.64] Stephen: One of them not too good being licking themselves.
[964.64] Stephen: They've gone off and they've got some medication.
[966.64] Stephen: This is the other one.
[967.64] Stephen: She rules the world.
[969.64] Stephen: And we are all her underlings.
[971.64] Stephen: And she's come to demand affection.
[974.64] Jack: Oh, I love them all.
[978.64] Jack: I see Caroline is taking the plunge and has bought express LRS
[984.64] Stephen: for all her quants and the TX.
[987.64] Curry: So Jack has a TX but he doesn't have an RX.
[990.64] Curry: What's happened on that.
[991.64] Curry: You got no receivers?
[993.64] Curry: No, I go way to payday.
[995.64] Stephen: Is it like Christmas when your dad says, well,
[998.64] Stephen: we've got you this this deal.
[1000.64] Curry: Well, you know, I'm a skunk in here.
[1003.64] Curry: Is it like Christmas when your dad says, well, we've got you this this this year and if you're still interested
[1009.72] Jack: We might get you know, no memory card
[1019.88] Jack: Also, I don't know what to I don't know what to get, you know, I don't know what to get
[1024.76] Jack: I don't know whether to like run my you tend to do you know why I mean you went out and DIY the TX
[1031.76] Stephen: Can you DIY your own receivers? Of course, you can you're not seeing the ELS hardware get hub
[1037.44] Stephen: They've got a bajillion designs for everything. Yeah
[1041.48] Stephen: Well, I might have to give that a go. I have got I've got to DIY our excess that I bought from someone
[1048.8] Stephen: I have to say it looks like they don't form quite as well as the ready-made ones
[1053.8] Stephen: I think one of the Wi-Fi antennas isn't properly connected because one of them doesn't do Wi-Fi that well at all
[1059.16] Stephen: You literally have to get it right next to your Wi-Fi
[1063.48] Stephen: Antenna that on the router or your PC or whatever to pick up the Wi-Fi. I
[1068.16] Curry: Think I've got what I would call the smallest
[1071.32] Curry: Express
[1073.44] Curry: LRS receiver I've seen so far which does apparently have a Wi-Fi adapter in it and they eat you one
[1080.28] Curry: Flat and tenet one. Oh a flat antenna. Mm-hmm. It's from B to FPV. So don't nobody panic
[1087.12] Curry: it looks like this and that
[1089.76] Stephen: Is the antenna and and if you were lurking around the Express LRS discord as I did
[1096.0] Stephen: Can you solo curry because that thing is tiny? So it's like so I knew I
[1100.96] Curry: Know I've lost my browser cookies. He forgot to sign in. So that little thing is the antenna and
[1107.36] Curry: compared to a regular
[1109.84] Curry: Ceramic antenna
[1111.32] Curry: It looks it's flat and giant next to it
[1114.16] Stephen: Yeah, now I think it was joy or someone on the discord did compare those
[1119.4] Stephen: About a year ago. And the reason they don't use that is because it doesn't perform as well, but it is a lot flatter. Oh
[1126.12] Curry: I didn't I didn't necessarily think it would
[1129.24] Curry: Of course, most people are going to put these on whoops, but I thought that was boring. So I'm gonna put it on the bone
[1133.64] Curry: Drone because that already crashes on its own. So I
[1137.68] Curry: Figure if it gets 500 600 meters that will do I thought they were kind of a complex construction
[1143.04] Stephen: But someone said that those are literally just a bit of wire in
[1147.52] Stephen: Kind of an epoxy or plastic just wound round in the coil
[1151.84] Stephen: That's that's all it is those ceramic antennas. Oh
[1156.5] Curry: Well, I guess it's not a super it can't be too complex a design because it's too bloody small to do anything with isn't it?
[1163.58] Curry: Yeah
[1166.18] Curry: Let's just have them like a coil of wine, but I think Jack should build something that small
[1184.13] Jack: Yeah, yeah, I've been I thought I've been doing lately I've you know, I've repaired a few boards and stuff
[1191.41] Jack: What if you kiss the one boards back from the dead?
[1195.85] Jack: You can do that. You could probably do some hard. Yeah, I'll receive it
[1201.33] Jack: Yeah, I've done I've done some right
[1204.01] Jack: I've done some fairly small stuff. There's different sizes as well
[1207.89] Stephen: Like there's the nano ones, but you don't have to do that at once. You could do a slightly bigger one
[1212.81] Stephen: Just cut yourself some slack
[1215.69] Jack: Mmm packages
[1221.1] Stephen: Is it soft
[1222.94] Stephen: Is it what if you would you do the ceramic antenna or would you go for like a UFL?
[1230.66] Jack: UfL I reckon
[1233.14] Jack: Because I I replace UfL's
[1236.86] Jack: YouTube chat
[1240.78] Jack: I mean Alex Federer off does even small, you know, he does BGA. I've never I never I've never done any BGA stuff
[1250.93] Jack: Like he's he's in the chat like doing some
[1254.77] Jack: Serious hardcore tiny shoulderings. Oh
[1259.17] Jack: Look at this
[1261.57] Jack: Little tiny and they got the same
[1265.69] Jack: Ceramic clamp as me
[1269.29] Curry: Should we be adding this to the stream then?
[1271.29] Stephen: So yeah, if you want to pop it in the screen as as I'm useless and I haven't in fact logged in
[1275.89] Stephen: Yeah, so this this is the github so there's a get up for the software site
[1280.35] Stephen: but there's also a github site for the hardware and so you can get patterns on how to
[1285.75] Stephen: Create these and you yeah, there's some plans where you can order the circuit boards
[1291.39] Stephen: and then the layout for them and then some examples on how to put them together and bits and bobs and all the
[1298.63] Stephen: The parameters you need to put them when ordering it which look like some kind of alien language to me
[1303.99] Stephen: But I guess they make sense to so lots of other people and then your little bomb
[1307.71] Stephen: I think crucially that RX has more components because with the TX it's using a lot of kind of pre-made death boards
[1314.23] Stephen: Whereas the RX because its size you've got to use the raw components instead of pre-made boards
[1320.23] Jack: Yeah, which might be quite difficult when he says bomb. He doesn't mean like
[1325.31] Jack: Materials. Yeah, not the explodey kind. Yeah, so no one having I use that my day job all the time. So because
[1333.87] Jack: because I don't know about you guys, but scarily we had a
[1337.67] Jack: Don't know where anyone's noticed. We've had the CIA send us out a questionnaire
[1343.39] Jack: I haven't had a chance to look at it myself, but
[1346.91] Jack: I
[1348.07] Curry: Saw it come in. I didn't know if I wanted to respond. I haven't looked at it yet
[1352.31] Jack: No, I know
[1353.15] Curry: I mean the question is like how well a job are we doing and we have to answer quite well very well amazingly
[1359.59] Curry: And there's nothing to say you are we don't like you leave us alone
[1363.03] Stephen: How many times on average do you break the law and then in a calendar year?
[1368.19] Stephen: 0 5 to 10 10 to 100 100 plus. Oh
[1374.98] Jack: There we go. That's the PDB that I know and hate. I finally found it
[1383.54] Jack: share
[1385.34] Stephen: Screen I don't think anyone's using PDBs unless they're building a class these days. I'm Jesus. What is this mess? I
[1393.78] Stephen: Know and somehow I want to decide it to be a pretty pattern and not in any way functional, didn't they? I know
[1401.54] Jack: Is it is it a hobby king one or something, but it's goddamn awful and the worst part of it is on the other side
[1410.86] Jack: There's no markings. I'll be right back. I'm sorry
[1415.74] Stephen: They sold a few of those and then after a few houses and houses are caught fire
[1420.94] Stephen: They probably revised this design and put markings on the other side or people just stop running PDBs
[1426.1] Stephen: Go join the hobby at a time when it was all four and one a SCs and PDBs are kind of a DBS was definitely something
[1434.7] Curry: between
[1436.74] Curry: 10 and like seven this year's ago, I think or
[1441.22] Curry: People running kiss seem to use them more
[1443.82] Curry: Because there's a trend with friend here sees all separate
[1447.38] Stephen: You can spot how frames change because when we went from PDBs to foreign one ear sees
[1453.66] Stephen: People stopped putting fat arms on the frames like they literally had fat arms. You could fit the ear sees on the arms
[1460.1] Curry: Yeah, it was quite often as well that the the first sort of frames
[1463.22] Curry: I mean there was ZMR types of this as well where you had the PDB integrated into the frame
[1468.54] Curry: So there'd be like carbon layers and then this be this other layer which had pads on it
[1474.58] Curry: Which would work as a PDB was sort of a different and thus you then had to have a regulator
[1479.86] Stephen: How many times could you crash one of those before you cracked the PDB layer?
[1483.9] Curry: I don't I never had one which I had an actual layer
[1488.89] Curry: Because I think that was the problem if you did crash it it would it would break
[1493.45] Curry: So ones in the stack were sort of more popular or the norm
[1497.01] Stephen: It still seems to be selling those ZMR frames to some parts of the world, you know, like that
[1502.13] Stephen: They are huge. There are huge stockpiles of them clearly
[1505.89] Stephen: And you see every now and then someone on Facebook anybody that's been in this for a few years
[1509.85] Curry: Will it have at least two ZMRs kicking around?
[1512.57] Curry: I've still got one on the wall sort of one of my first quads, which runs 3s gem fan 50 30s
[1520.57] Curry: It weighs about 3 kilograms and takes about 90% throttle to hover
[1524.93] Curry: And then I've got one which is all set in a box somewhere for no real reason
[1530.29] Stephen: Yeah, I was just reviewing things today and thinking like what videos got me into FVV
[1534.77] Stephen: And it was all the metal Danny stuff and I started like looking down the hardware spec and some of it was familiar
[1539.33] Stephen: And some of it wasn't
[1542.97] Stephen: 2204 motors, yeah, I mean I've used those
[1545.69] Stephen: I've got like a 5-inch with 2203.5. It's pretty near to that 1950 KV
[1551.65] Stephen: Yeah, not not a world away, but 1950 KV on like 3s or 4s
[1556.97] Curry: That wasn't metal Danny using
[1559.97] Curry: 6-inch because he had a special
[1562.77] Curry: vortex quad
[1564.33] Stephen: 6-inch yeah, 6-inch 5-inch one. Yeah, so 6-inch on
[1569.37] Stephen: 1950
[1570.37] Stephen: But 2204 motors on 6-inch. I mean, it's kind of struggle to get those up to speed
[1575.61] Stephen: You need to like wait for it to get up to speed before taking off
[1579.09] Curry: Well, that's because when it all started the the sort of things were only 5-inch for like 1850 motors and stuff before the 22
[1586.81] Curry: Size came so it was much much smaller on 3-inch
[1591.61] Curry: Yeah, because they thought I'll bring everything down before people said actually we want to go really stupidly fast
[1597.61] Curry: Bring put big motors back
[1599.37] Stephen: Let's see what happens. Yeah, but you have these really heavy quads with 2204 motors
[1604.49] Stephen: I don't know what people thought was going to happen, but clearly they would have struggled
[1609.09] Stephen: Seem to work
[1611.75] Stephen: Yeah between 2014 and 2016 that seemed to be what people were doing and then you get to
[1616.79] Stephen: 2017 and all of a sudden things are exploding and I
[1620.23] Stephen: Was looking back at NERC's video of the train and that seemed to be like a modern 5-inch freestyle by that point
[1626.27] Stephen: like all of a sudden just
[1628.07] Stephen: Everything changed overnight. It did get different for sure
[1632.39] Stephen: We've basically been flying the same platform for four
[1635.63] Stephen: Gotta get on for five years now since 2017 is what I'm getting at like there was a lot of change and
[1641.47] Stephen: In terms of aerodynamics and things like that. There hasn't been a lot of change in the last four years
[1647.39] Curry: No, if the only weird thing that's happened, I mean aside from things like the radio system and the VTX
[1653.99] Curry: Changing about and getting a bit better
[1656.47] Curry: The the motors kind of came a little bit full circle when people realized if they were putting
[1662.07] Curry: smaller motors on
[1663.87] Curry: Then they could potentially eke out longer flight time. So
[1669.91] Curry: Some of the long-range quads are using smaller motors that you might have found on on our five inches
[1675.91] Curry: back in the day
[1678.07] Curry: the the eight it was it the 1850 was it those kind of small motors coming back on these um
[1684.91] Curry: These long-range quads and flying for longer 1804 or 1806 Oh 18 oh something's yeah
[1691.59] Stephen: Yeah
[1692.07] Stephen: Yes
[1692.83] Stephen: HGLRC have released some 1804 which I'm kind of interested in and that seems to be people are shouting that
[1698.97] Stephen: Oh, this is absolutely great for a four-inch or three and a half inch
[1702.79] Stephen: I've got a four inch on 2004 and I really enjoy that. I've got another one on 1505s, but
[1709.11] Stephen: You've got the really new HGLRC 1804 is then you've got X novers
[1714.07] Stephen: Which seems to be a bit of an older design with the 5-mil shaft breath and a team out and they just look a bit chunkier
[1722.07] Stephen: Going by a whole bunch of different motors to see what happens and just fly them all but impossible
[1728.75] Jack: Yeah, those those weird motors you were talking about
[1733.07] Jack: That metal Danny had they were Cobra motors. Yeah Cobra 19 60. Yeah
[1738.83] Jack: Yeah, but don't forget Cobra
[1741.67] Jack: did
[1742.99] Jack: the thing where they said
[1745.51] Jack: that they were a
[1747.87] Jack: 05 stator and they're actually an 06 or something like that if you ever know for on the record
[1753.23] Stephen: At least that's what they're sold as an 04
[1756.11] Jack: Yeah
[1757.11] Jack: But they're not a lot of motor for a six-inch. Yeah, it was just it was just mad back in the day
[1763.59] Jack: It was just like and I think he was running. I think he was running six six inch props and
[1770.87] Jack: Yeah
[1772.91] Stephen: Yeah
[1774.35] Stephen: Do the lot of punch out so he's racing through the trees which was really exhilarating and I love to do that style of flying as
[1779.95] Stephen: Well worried you're just dodging side to side and keeping your momentum
[1783.23] Stephen: But you don't need to demand a lot out the motor because it's staying at the same speed most of the time
[1788.27] Stephen: You're not doing a lot of big stop punch out stop punch out moves
[1793.63] Stephen: Look at it. What's just what?
[1796.67] Jack: What are they thinking?
[1798.71] Jack: business abuse mark that's it
[1802.51] Jack: literally abuse
[1804.63] Jack: Definitely. Oh
[1806.39] Stephen: You talk as in a motors. Why are there eight motors?
[1810.15] Stephen: time
[1812.15] Curry: Yeah
[1813.83] Curry: screw you Tom
[1815.87] Curry: You had it coming to you. I know
[1818.75] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience
[1822.43] Frank: Downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only
[1825.75] Frank: Sensors to please the iTunes people hosted on the internet forwarded through to your podcast provider
[1830.63] Frank: Downloaded playing on your device and is now playing in your ears all thanks to our patreons
[1836.27] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits
[1839.47] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com
[1842.59] Frank: Let's drone out
[1844.15] Jack: Can I have the unopened ZMR frame from you, please curry? It's not an open this it's in a box
[1850.83] Curry: It was I knew is something
[1854.03] Curry: Unabused
[1857.03] Jack: It's still lives because I dug out my only H frame quad for my POS squad and
[1865.91] Jack: It turns out is four inch only so Steven if you want it you can have it
[1876.88] Stephen: Having a lot of fun with my little four inch custom frame design superglue on it
[1881.96] Curry: I was just about what we were saying the other week and I did think about building myself a
[1887.72] Curry: new old quad using the KK one board and
[1892.68] Curry: Oh God the worst matters I could find maybe in that frame. Do you think I should use a circa 2006?
[1901.32] Curry: Camera as well, which
[1903.28] Curry: If it gets more than like a couple of photons and light everything else goes black and the yeah, I think so
[1909.0] Curry: I mean all of yours like 14 degrees. Oh
[1912.88] Stephen: Dead cow there mr. Dead. I do love dead cat. I love that like screw it. I can use my DVR
[1918.72] Stephen: I'm not carrying no damn camera
[1921.68] Stephen: 2004 us on a four inch
[1924.2] Stephen: Screw it. Just go all power
[1926.48] Stephen: It ends up about 300 grams with a 5s battery. This is is it digital? Yeah
[1932.36] Stephen: Yeah, yeah Cadex on there and so the run cam system the old I was doing a bunch of testing
[1938.88] Stephen: I put out a video a while ago with all the different antennas and I'm pretty sure this old triumph does best than everything
[1944.24] Stephen: Else is a bit of a chunker, but it does a good job
[1948.0] Stephen: Yeah, so about 300 grams all up, but yeah, it goes like the clappers on 5s
[1952.8] Stephen: Three three thousand one hundred KV on 5s. It's a nice combo
[1957.48] Curry: Yeah, you are you're doing all the freaky stuff for inch 5s site niche
[1963.48] Curry: Superniche. Oh
[1965.08] Stephen: Thanks to GMB. You can get this amazing range of batteries. They literally they make like 380's 530's
[1972.04] Stephen: 660's 700's
[1973.92] Stephen: 1100's
[1975.08] Stephen: 1100's 1350's and they do them in everything like you can buy some of them at a 1s up to about
[1980.72] Stephen: 660 I think and then literally every single one of those goes from 2s all the way up to 6s and
[1987.84] Stephen: The larger size is they do up to 8s
[1992.16] Stephen: So you can get yeah, I need a 5s 900 milliamp hour battery only a 5s 700 milliamp hour
[1998.76] Stephen: Things you just couldn't get before and 5s 700 milliamp hour on the 4-inch
[2004.64] Stephen: works really well with these
[2006.44] Stephen: Flash hobby motors from a DYS that went out of business. It seems they're now trading under flash hobby
[2012.92] Jack: Another prestige name they found for themselves. I've got Cobra race back. Oh my god
[2020.39] Jack: They were the trouble is they were so big those motors
[2024.11] Jack: Tone why aren't you here? Yeah, cuz I had a look on eBay and
[2028.91] Jack: I I can't get the
[2033.07] Jack: ZM are for a reasonable price
[2037.67] Jack: You can if you want it made out of glass fiber, I thought these things were still being sold
[2045.03] Jack: Yeah, they're not they're not being sold anymore really like if they are they're not in our market
[2053.15] Jack: but
[2055.39] Jack: Also, I I believe as well
[2058.27] Jack: the
[2059.55] Jack: that that KK one boards will not it's
[2064.31] Jack: That was never designed to fly in a small ZMR. I think you're gonna have real tuning issues with that we
[2072.79] Curry: Think you're gonna have choosing issues for stop, mate
[2076.51] Curry: the idea of flying
[2078.83] Curry: Something on a KK board and a quad is not to make it like look at this. This is the new
[2085.27] Curry: Forward quite the opposite. Let's
[2088.27] Curry: It's to sometimes I think back and I say all the good old days wasn't things great
[2092.83] Curry: Didn't we fly so smoothly back then and then I had a look at the video and said no actually it was like flying
[2097.47] Curry: An old bag of bricks, but we just so happy it got in the air
[2099.99] Curry: So I wanted to recreate the situation of flying the bag of bricks
[2104.55] Curry: By by doing that I can go out and fly the tricopter, but that kind of already flies, but I never built a quad
[2111.87] Curry: From Eva I built a KK 2 quad, but I didn't build a KK 1 quad. I think KK
[2118.35] Curry: The original KK would be much more interesting to make a quad because you don't need a computer to alter the any of the gains
[2125.19] Curry: She's a screwdriver. What could be easier?
[2128.55] Stephen: You don't know filters. You just got a frame that dampens everything by flexing
[2133.23] Curry: Yeah, I mean that the KK was the only board where I'd use the trim switches on my radio because it's like always going that way
[2142.63] Curry: Trim it over it'd be fine. No matter what
[2146.67] Jack: Difference
[2148.03] Jack: constant input
[2149.75] Curry: Yeah, that's that's you go good at fly knows like never never take your fingers off the controls
[2156.51] Curry: They were always there just of these
[2158.75] Stephen: Cobra 2204s and no just called a two to four s motor
[2163.39] Stephen: I would have thought a 1960 KV motor would be firmly in success territory now, but no not these guys for us
[2171.19] Jack: Excessive tape used to conceal or attach additional items
[2178.15] Jack: lack of visible
[2179.99] Jack: registration number
[2182.35] Jack: Additional batteries you remember this curry. I'm showing the
[2187.63] Jack: Recognize suspicious unmanned area aircraft
[2191.87] Jack: Systems recognize you want to get away with it use cable ties
[2195.55] Jack: Yeah visible loose wires well Frank you're in trouble
[2201.99] Curry: Obviously they haven't they haven't seen round
[2204.55] Curry: my original quad
[2206.39] Jack: Yeah
[2208.07] Curry: It's still I have to get as I would show you it. It's got why sticking out of every other suspicious is
[2213.87] Stephen: Just it doesn't really relate to anything that you might care about
[2219.59] Stephen: Yeah, why isn't it if the UAV is following you around then it's suspicious
[2224.71] Stephen: If the UAV is flown near people and property recklessly, then it's suspicious rather than oh, there's too much exposed wire
[2232.59] Jack: Must be a ramen. Yeah, that's it. I believe
[2237.15] Jack: You know, what is it observe? Oh, but this is a marriage of Indian individuals
[2242.47] Jack: No battery life is typically 20 to 30 minutes
[2246.39] Curry: 20 to 30 minutes
[2248.71] Jack: That's my amazing
[2250.75] Stephen: You don't have to be running those 20 to a force and nine inch props to get that sort of battery life. I know
[2258.37] Stephen: Look for damage or injured individuals
[2262.01] Jack: damage
[2263.01] Jack: I'm emotionally damaged
[2265.57] Curry: If they see Jack in a quad, he's that's it. That's suspicious right there. We found a damaged individuals
[2271.13] Jack: I see why the pilots are a damage. Well, I can't even check my own car door. So, you know
[2280.05] Jack: Without it being being an issue
[2284.37] Curry: Well, you are suspicious
[2286.25] Curry: Yeah, check the author name. Is it Karen?
[2288.97] Curry: That sounds like a Karen thing to say doesn't it? Yeah
[2293.25] Curry: You should build a corresponding document saying how to recognize a Karen whilst out flying a quad
[2300.41] Curry: Basically anybody approaches you coming towards you in a forceful manner
[2305.13] Stephen: I've got a technique actually I fly under a tree which is quite kind of stay away from people stay away from property
[2311.85] Stephen: but but I also have
[2314.37] Stephen: Within a short distance of me a skate park where people play loud hip-hop music and smoke a substantial amount of weed
[2322.57] Stephen: which means that all Karen's are basically magnetically attracted to
[2327.17] Stephen: problem area skate park where they sit and tuck and
[2330.73] Stephen: Tap their foot or to whatever it is. It makes them feel better and then leave me to find peace, which is which is wonderful
[2337.57] Stephen: Whilst I maintain the safe distance between myself and the skaters, obviously
[2341.73] Jack: Yeah, I am suspicious when recycling let alone a drone
[2347.69] Jack: Forward I can forward it to you Frank if you want
[2350.93] Curry: Basically if Jack's outside interacting with stuff, there's 80% chance of him being arrested
[2356.53] Curry: Yeah, cuz he's just like this
[2359.81] Stephen: Dodgy, yeah
[2362.65] Stephen: New technology should we talk about new technology? I think we were man. We're veering towards that at the start of the podcast
[2370.77] Stephen: Did I mention the D shop beeper thing with blue jay? Yes
[2374.49] Stephen: Yeah, I talked to the ESC configurator developers. Um, you can actually run this on your phone and they do a standalone app
[2380.97] Stephen: I don't know if anyone realizes this if you've got chrome on your Android phone
[2385.37] Stephen: Then you can run an ESC configurator and it runs on your phone. Just kind of handy
[2390.65] Stephen: So I monkeyed around with that. Um, also be all heli with that by RPM stuff
[2396.97] Stephen: That's kind of handy. If anyone's looked at be all heli, there's a lot of fear and
[2402.25] Stephen: general
[2403.45] Stephen: around thirty two point eight, but there's a test code release that appears sometime in November and
[2409.21] Stephen: I haven't got a lot of BLE SCs
[2410.89] Stephen: But I've got a couple and it appears that they've managed to remove a lot of the issues and there was a nice video by
[2418.01] Stephen: Limon one of the beat flight developers yesterday who explained the ins and outs of that and
[2423.17] Stephen: Made me feel a lot more comfortable about installing it. So I pop that on a quad and it seems good
[2429.29] Stephen: And that gives you that they've done it so that when it changes the PWM frequency
[2436.33] Stephen: It does it not according to the throttle
[2439.37] Stephen: But according to the RPM of the motor so that it makes sure it's using a PWM frequency
[2446.49] Stephen: That's not a harmonic of the motor RPM. I think it's all the other way around
[2453.05] Stephen: Which is nice and you kind of reduces aliasing errors for
[2457.21] Stephen: aliasing errors
[2458.57] Stephen: Stepping reduces stepping problems
[2461.57] Stephen: I'm also running a ton of RC2 stuff for beta flight and that seems to be working really well
[2466.85] Stephen: If anyone hasn't tried it, I've been flying this since July. Oh crap. I should also mention bardwell
[2472.93] Stephen: Found my patch and did a video on it, which yeah, bury the lead
[2479.01] Stephen: Bardwell did a video on some patch that I'd written
[2482.49] Stephen: Which I've been here this July and he put that out and unsurprisingly people started paying attention to it
[2490.35] Stephen: This patch basically takes the craft name and it writes a bunch of useful data into it because under DJI
[2497.55] Stephen: You only get craft name and a couple of other things and you don't get warnings
[2501.39] Stephen: You don't get elk you you don't get RSSI and you might say oh, but I can use the
[2507.23] Stephen: Analog RSSI thing and yeah that that gets you like a 0 to 100 figure
[2511.75] Stephen: but if you're running crossfire or Express LRS, it doesn't tell you the flight mode you're in and
[2516.51] Stephen: You can't get RSSI DBM, which is the more useful version of RSSI
[2521.23] Stephen: Well, you've got a pic and only have one of them elk you or us RSSI
[2525.15] Stephen: What do you want?
[2525.91] Stephen: So so I wrote a patch that kind of takes the craft name field and shoe horns a bunch of data into it
[2531.81] Stephen: So instead of saying craft name it now says elk you one colon one hundred
[2537.75] Stephen: minus
[2539.07] Stephen: 47 or whatever it is
[2542.07] Stephen: Yeah
[2543.47] Stephen: Caldwell seemed to find this and he did a video on it and he he said he found a bug
[2550.11] Stephen: But he didn't find a bug
[2551.71] Stephen: He actually was running ghost
[2554.59] Stephen: And he was like, where's my flight mode? Where's my flight mode number? I'll refrain from pounding the desk was the editor hates it
[2561.43] Stephen: and
[2562.59] Stephen: The answer is ghost doesn't have a flight mode unlike crossfire where you see, you know one colon 100 to colon 100
[2569.75] Stephen: Express LRS where you've got a bajillion different things and you might get seven colon 100
[2574.55] Stephen: Under ghost there is no flight mode. Well, there are flight modes, but they don't appear in the protocol
[2580.43] Stephen: So you can't see them from within beta flight. So you just get the elk you and so bardwell said I hope you fix this bug
[2587.75] Stephen: It wasn't a bug it was that he was using ghost
[2590.15] Stephen: But he did find another thing that was really valuable which was that if you see a warning right now
[2595.59] Stephen: It blocks out the elk you and you can't see
[2598.15] Stephen: Warning you can't see the elk you you just get the warning text in the craft name
[2601.79] Stephen: They just stay there until the warning goes away
[2603.95] Stephen: So I thought well, yeah
[2605.27] Stephen: It's kind of irritating and I found out I could grab the blink state from the OSD from the analog OSD
[2610.79] Stephen: Because analog OSD has a lot of elements that flash on and flash off flash on and flash off
[2615.27] Stephen: Which don't seem to get carried through to the actual element
[2618.83] Stephen: And so I grabbed the blinking state and I used it to switch between elk you and warning
[2624.07] Stephen: So now if you have a warning it uses the blink state to flash between two
[2628.63] Stephen: But it does it kind of crazily sporadically. It doesn't go on off on off. It goes on
[2633.91] Stephen: off on off off off on on off off
[2637.15] Stephen: it just jumps around like a maniac and I think this might be due to some of the task prioritization issues with
[2644.39] Stephen: OSD that's happening in beta flight because they seem to be saying that there's some little
[2648.55] Stephen: Little wrinkles. I remember back in July this used to work. It used to just flash normally
[2653.47] Stephen: but they did something with the OSD recently that stopped it flashing and so I had to like
[2658.51] Stephen: Kind of put in my own form of flashing because the OSD elements were no longer flashing of their own accord
[2664.19] Stephen: So anyway, that's out there. It's under
[2667.59] Stephen: How less slash beta flight?
[2670.71] Stephen: H-o-w-e-l-s slash beta flight and
[2674.23] Stephen: I've put a bunch of releases out there for all the major unified targets
[2677.75] Stephen: so you can just go in there and load for my locally and
[2682.15] Stephen: Smoosh off you go, you know, take a
[2685.23] Stephen: CLI diff or a CLI dump before you do anything for safety
[2689.07] Stephen: But yeah
[2689.71] Stephen: You'll get instead of your craft name fields you'll get the LQ and you'll get RSSI after the LQ and then when a warning
[2696.19] Stephen: Comes up it goes in and to make it work
[2698.39] Stephen: You just enable warnings and LQ and RSSI and then move your craft name to where you want it. Bingo
[2704.45] Stephen: Good
[2706.21] Jack: Thank you. Well, that's good. Yeah for me and Kerry you don't use digital
[2715.97] Curry: Steven can you and I I was chatting to painless
[2721.41] Curry: last Friday while I was waiting for a battery to
[2725.01] Curry: Charge and just having a natter and I was talking about
[2729.41] Curry: When I was talking to you about like I can't find the target for this card
[2733.45] Curry: And I was like, why does beta flight want me to pick a target when it knows what poxy flight controller I've got
[2738.93] Curry: And why doesn't the target name look the same and you were doing the normal typical program response saying? Oh, well
[2745.57] Curry: Here's here's a file. You try reading this overlays on top of it. Yeah
[2749.65] Curry: Yeah, it's it's it's self-documenting and we were like can somebody just make a fork of beta flight, which is called
[2757.89] Curry: Simple flight or something like that where it has like a page as the configurator
[2763.41] Curry: And it it it doesn't have pits because everybody
[2768.61] Curry: Wants the pits to be just to happen automatically. It has a slider that says
[2774.01] Curry: fasty spin slowy spin
[2776.01] Curry: And then you have disannoying and that's it
[2781.57] Stephen: Say that what I think
[2783.61] Stephen: Like devs do make all the right decisions and I'm not in the business of creating a fork
[2789.49] Stephen: I'm not gonna pretend that this is a fork. What I have is a dirty little hack. It's not a full fork
[2795.05] Stephen: I'm taking a patch and maintaining it, but I actually agree that don't undersell yourself Steven. You can do it
[2802.41] Stephen: No, I mean, I agree with their decision because they said look DJI can't be bothered to do a proper job of this
[2808.25] Stephen: So we're not gonna work with DJI
[2809.97] Stephen: that was pretty much the between the lines reading of a very very long thread with about 100 plus posts in it and
[2817.13] Stephen: I'm not in the business of creating a fork. This is just purely I'm trying to say
[2821.65] Jack: potato is
[2823.13] Curry: Coming I think beta flight. You can fly you can like a dog that fly emu. Yes
[2828.59] Curry: I don't want to know about the filters like I don't want to I think tuning should be automatic
[2834.63] Stephen: Yeah, fly in just like I happen. That's what any flight pilots do
[2838.67] Stephen: They just flash it and pretend that none of the settings exist and they you know
[2841.91] Curry: Put their name on the OSD and go and fly. That's it. Jack. Is it isn't the kiss configurator like two pages or something?
[2852.15] Jack: But
[2859.15] Jack: On the front, yeah
[2862.55] Stephen: Just have a dial for each of the pits on the flight controller and then you can use a screwdriver
[2868.11] Stephen: And you can just adjust. I like this. I'm gonna try this out role
[2877.51] Curry: I'll try it out. But if I'm gonna do that, I need I need to see Steven's special wing that doesn't use any
[2883.15] Stephen: Surfaces or something. I still sat down there. I've got two other quads since I really need to pull my finger out
[2889.31] Curry: Sitting down there. I'm turning to another Frank here with you
[2893.15] Stephen: Well, I quite like flying multi rotors and I don't really want to build a wing
[2896.83] Stephen: But I've bought the parts and I'm gonna do it. It's just it's okay. I'm not convinced. It's gonna be a wing
[2901.51] Curry: It's just gonna be a multi rotor with funny way. We'll have a wing
[2905.23] Stephen: It will be towing a wing
[2907.67] Stephen: When I simply be a wing
[2910.51] Stephen: One will be in the equation
[2912.83] Jack: Sorry, good worrying
[2916.03] Jack: should we
[2918.75] Jack: Go you through the news on the
[2922.91] Curry: Yeah, some here the enthusiasm there did we do we have any news I forgot to look at any news. Yeah, we do
[2932.99] Stephen: Sorry, I wasn't sure I bought you up there Jack no, no, no
[2939.63] Jack: Immersion RC of I think released a new transmitter
[2948.59] Stephen: What is important is a dog was rescued with a drone and a sausage
[2953.59] Jack: Yeah, we can cover we can definitely do that if you want to if you want to cover that I
[2958.59] Curry: Didn't watch that video because it seemed to clickbaity to me. Was it was an actual rescue. There was a
[2966.23] Stephen: Dangling a
[2967.79] Stephen: Sausage below a phantom and moving it and the dog followed it about three meters and that was it
[2973.87] Jack: But the important thing maybe maybe this this was the the reason why
[2983.99] Jack: The reason why that
[2987.15] Jack: That the CAO released
[2990.27] Stephen: Yeah, this drone literally meets all the suspicious definitions that you have listed in that
[2996.59] Stephen: It's got one. It's got extraneous dangly bets
[3000.59] Stephen: There's a frickin sausage tied to it. Yeah, look, it's not bad, but then they just replayed that again and again, and I think
[3007.39] Stephen: Although this was the headline what actually happened was someone got in a canoe and went to fetch the dog
[3013.15] Stephen: because there's a clip where you know dog moves about three meters in response to a dangling sausage and then stops and
[3020.71] Jack: Then there's a lot of footage of someone in a canoe. That looks like
[3030.23] Jack: Little
[3031.59] Jack: Bibb, oh god, really
[3035.11] Jack: Certainly surrounded by real people who are set to rescue
[3040.91] Stephen: Sausage just ultimately did the trick. You know, I'm just not sure that is actually the case
[3047.83] Curry: And I'm convinced so it's like a
[3052.71] Curry: story
[3054.15] Curry: That doesn't seem to hold up very well
[3056.39] Curry: It's like was it the drone or was it just people in the canoe went up on the mud flat and got the dog
[3061.51] Stephen: It sounds like we're from the type of story and news agency might hold in reserve and and deploy
[3066.95] Curry: When yes, everyone of the swaps these stories
[3069.55] Curry: They keep on news round just in case you need to trade a story with the proper a proper news. I
[3075.55] Jack: It's like the the the one time that I spoke to Tony and he said I'm so good at airsoft
[3082.43] Jack: And then the next thing he was accused of cheating
[3088.75] Jack: Fiercely competitive the cookies just the worst thing ever. I use a plug-in called. I don't care about cookies
[3096.99] Stephen: It's the best thing ever
[3099.19] Stephen: Really?
[3100.07] Stephen: Answers all those questions for you. What does it do? Just go? No, it's just hides. Just like no, no cookies. Go away
[3108.27] Stephen: Yeah
[3109.75] Stephen: JavaScript
[3110.91] Jack: Yeah, so
[3113.95] Jack: Immersion RC have been sharing
[3116.99] Jack: the the info about the
[3120.39] Jack: full range 2.4 gigahertz
[3124.27] Jack: In a free
[3126.35] Stephen: Module Bay, it's totally different from fries from free sky
[3130.75] Curry: Why is this is this the one they've built with orca?
[3134.71] Stephen: Yeah, yeah
[3136.11] Stephen: the real the real loss there is that
[3139.63] Stephen: While a fast guy haven't tried to sue anyone
[3142.27] Stephen: Immersion RC assumed that they would try and sue them if they released a module that was in that form factor even though
[3148.35] Stephen: Immersion RC already has a nano bay module
[3151.75] Stephen: So I guess it was on orca side and so we've got a third module bay format
[3156.51] Stephen: You've got jr bay light and then whatever the heck this is which only has the ghost module available for it
[3163.31] Stephen: So if you've got a ghost light module and a full ghost module, you're going to need to buy a third one
[3169.15] Stephen: So fly this radio
[3171.87] Curry: But this already has a ghost module in it, doesn't it? No, it doesn't I
[3175.75] Curry: Thought you could you could get it with the ghost module. You can get it with a ghost module, but it's a plug-in
[3180.39] Curry: It uses total right. That's a different thing. Yeah, so this is the FPV dot control
[3186.91] Curry: Is that what it's called the radio? I don't
[3191.62] Stephen: Know what the name is the market
[3194.9] Curry: Because what what I was interested in and I wrote to orca about this actually was they said oh this will work with
[3202.14] Curry: Sims wirelessly on bluetooth and you can play on mobile to which I said
[3207.14] Curry: I don't mention anywhere about iOS and iOS is particularly
[3211.42] Curry: Vincity because he won't connect to it. You will need to be MFI certified by Apple
[3216.78] Curry: And I said is this MFI certified? Can I play on my iOS device and they said no
[3222.06] Curry: But they haven't they haven't really spelled that out in the marketing, but it just says you could do things, but I'm so much
[3229.3] Curry: I
[3230.98] Curry: Was just gonna say I'm still interested in some orca products because one thing I learned about their goggles is
[3236.5] Curry: You can record via HDI
[3239.34] Curry: So if you're using something like open TX, no open HD
[3244.06] Curry: there's too many open things now open HD for example, and you see me with my stupid goggles and my
[3250.9] Curry: Tablet trying to record stuff. I could have a single pair of goggles. I could hook in my HDMI
[3256.3] Curry: I could record it and I could look at it for a single pair of goggles and have analog
[3264.3] Curry: I'm trying to score a pair of goggles. I'm so far failing
[3267.74] Stephen: Okay, very well, they look okay, but they're way more expensive than the competition
[3273.5] Stephen: Plus aren't me and I bought my sky zones for I think
[3278.18] Stephen: 3-3 30 or 3 40 something like that
[3281.02] Stephen: They're just way more expensive than the competition and you need to buy a module
[3285.3] Stephen: The sky zones come with a module and they're like over a hundred quid cheaper. So yeah
[3290.38] Stephen: I'm not entirely sure what what I get for that extra hundred pounds. They look very cool and everything but
[3296.3] Stephen: Doesn't seem great value
[3298.06] Curry: Okay, there's there's some interest as well
[3300.18] Curry: I haven't I haven't really looked at this in detail
[3302.1] Curry: But all crew of bringing out their own digital system and I don't know what that's gonna look like
[3306.62] Curry: And I don't think many people seem to know about that yet
[3310.26] Curry: Who knows something another digital system three?
[3314.1] Stephen: I think there are three digital systems from the coverage that I've seen there's one that runs over 5g
[3319.9] Stephen: No idea. Well, we're all we're all good for that now. We've had our vaccinations. That'd be that'd be good
[3324.42] Stephen: I'm sorry
[3326.5] Stephen: Straight up monog in what what what why 5g vaccinations?
[3330.02] Curry: Oh, this was that was a coronavirus joke about people saying don't give a coronavirus injection or vaccination cuz that 5g's in it
[3338.5] Curry: or whatever
[3339.5] Curry: It's a
[3341.62] Jack: Type yeah
[3343.3] Jack: Yeah, I remember there was a hilarious bit of graffiti
[3347.94] Jack: That said no jab no chip as in computer chip and someone then later on
[3355.18] Jack: Sprayed and amended it to say no jab no fish and chips
[3361.26] Jack: So, yeah, it's it's the
[3365.62] Stephen: Charge a lot more for those jobs if there were none and particles involved that did anything meaningful. Yeah, it's the Tony
[3372.06] Jack: The level of thing we need Tony here cuz he
[3375.9] Curry: Could explain how this this related to the flower
[3379.42] Stephen: Yeah, it's all like put us on a slippery slope where we eventually say that all politicians are aliens who like eat people
[3386.74] Stephen: But I closed doors or something
[3389.58] Jack: Apparently and and the earth is houses and they're guarding the truth 500 milliwatt
[3396.42] Stephen: You know, what's pissing me off cold rx's my rx is so cold
[3402.34] Stephen: can't fly properly
[3404.42] Jack: well, speaking of
[3406.34] Jack: Speaking of how much how much milliwatts is this 500 milliwatt? That'll cook it. Yeah
[3414.06] Jack: TBS crossfire nano rx pro long range. This was a bit of info info from
[3421.02] Jack: No, and numbskull posted it as well
[3428.94] Jack: Yeah, so TBS nano rx pro long-range drone receiver basically gives you
[3437.78] Jack: Your telemetry for longer. I think
[3441.3] Stephen: Is that they were forced to release this and they're going to release one with diversity, which would be the obvious choice
[3448.18] Stephen: But apparently the diversity one is rumored to only do 500 milliwatt
[3453.34] Stephen: telemetry on one
[3454.94] Stephen: One channel back to your radio and the other one will just be normal telemetry
[3459.18] Stephen: But they appear to have released this ahead of time because apparently someone leaked it
[3465.5] Curry: Well done seems like an awfully powerful lot of telemetry there for people that really need to know
[3472.02] Curry: Actual telemetry when they're at like 40 kilometers away
[3475.46] Stephen: This is using as well because a lot of people that do long distance would want to run mavlink over the telemetry and
[3482.98] Stephen: Everyone I've asked about TBS mavlink tells me that their implementation of mavlinks terrible and basically unusable
[3489.54] Stephen: so a lot of if you look at people like
[3494.34] Stephen: RC RC something RC test flight is it who does all the boats and autonomous stuff?
[3499.64] Stephen: he'll have two totally separate radio systems one by crossfire or something to send the control signal out and a totally different radio system to
[3508.4] Stephen: send the mavlink data back and
[3511.64] Stephen: That's how the pros do it. So
[3514.8] Stephen: I'm not sure what niche they're going for here because their implementation of mavlink doesn't have great
[3520.48] Stephen: Reputation and a lot of people are really running a separate radio system
[3524.64] Curry: Suppose it's supposed to work now
[3529.11] Curry: Press release from TBS says it's working honest something like that. Yeah. Well the previous press release did
[3535.07] Stephen: When anyone was quizzed about it, they said it doesn't actually work
[3538.79] Stephen: Or it works in a very limited capacity that doesn't fulfill what you want from a fully autonomous craft
[3544.35] Curry: It seems it seems quite well defined mavlink. It seems quite hard to get wrong. It's got a very organized structure and stuff
[3550.51] Curry: It's like, you know, this is how you write it out. And this is what you put there and say you convert it back again
[3555.07] Stephen: Like it's just a very a very chunky protocol, but the data frames need to be quite large
[3560.35] Stephen: there was there were some restrictions on what you could do with a TBS version which seemed to interfere and
[3565.39] Stephen: From what I was hearing if you ran a separate 900 megahertz radio
[3569.19] Stephen: You kind of sidestepped all those restrictions and you're able to run
[3573.63] Curry: Whatever the heck you wanted to. Yeah, I know I'll see test flight and stuff uses a a quite powerful
[3584.77] Curry: Specific data radio that just works on I think that's probably put out a 4-3-3 signal
[3589.65] Curry: Both ends and then he just gets it straight to his laptop so he can change stuff around
[3594.29] Stephen: Speaking of that you've got the new beta fpv 1 watt haven't you curry?
[3598.53] Stephen: Yes, which has a backpack
[3602.13] Stephen: Yes, and reportedly do things like share your telemetry
[3607.49] Curry: It can reportedly do things the only thing i've seen the backpack functions doing and you probably know more about it than me is
[3613.89] Curry: Being able to change your goggles stuff
[3617.57] Curry: so if you put a backpack on your goggles, you can have that change when you change your
[3623.57] Curry: Uh vtx or something like that
[3626.21] Curry: And I have actually got some bits and pieces from some people to try this stuff out
[3630.45] Stephen: It sounds like that's awesome for races, but I don't you know, I don't change my channel i'll fly by myself most of the time so
[3638.37] Curry: No, I think most of us say, uh, this is my channel
[3641.33] Curry: This is what i'm set to else you every cord you're like, where am I what am I doing?
[3646.61] Stephen: Yeah, i've got like 30 quads and they're well when they were around the log
[3650.05] Stephen: They're all set to the same channel and that's just where I stayed if you're a racer though
[3653.81] Stephen: Obviously, you know, you're going to be changing every 10 minutes to a new channel
[3658.21] Curry: Generally speaking at race events normally they're allocated. I mean
[3662.37] Curry: Guys correct me in the chat if you i'm wrong, but normally it's like you're on this channel
[3667.17] Curry: And you're going to be in in this particular heat
[3670.29] Curry: And you you generally stay on that unless it comes down to sort of finals and stuff where they might be reallocated again
[3676.53] Curry: but then again people
[3678.21] Curry: People seem to love the the sort of the tramp wand and things where you can sort of the race director can waft over it
[3684.21] Stephen: And change channels that way it does seem there's a lot of vlrs people are racers and I think uh, yeah
[3689.25] Stephen: They're trying to find an alternative
[3691.49] Curry: You'd never know it given the fact they're all about must have latency and they call any other protocol like will you support s bus?
[3698.85] Curry: No, that's legacy
[3702.85] Curry: That sort of thing
[3704.21] Stephen: Yeah, there's there's definitely some tech superiority in there and I think
[3708.53] Stephen: Partially, it's justified. They're like well if we're writing ourselves we get to make these decisions, you know
[3714.05] Stephen: If you want to jump in there and write a s bus adapter, i'm sure you can go do that but
[3719.25] Stephen: The people who are project leads think it's beneath them probably it is to be honest
[3723.33] Curry: I have got one of the little boards from happy model for the five channel pwm
[3729.09] Curry: Which i'm going to put in an old plane with no flight controller and fly it on
[3734.69] Curry: Express LRS just for funsies
[3737.49] Stephen: Because I can that'd be cool. Just remember to reallocate channel five so it's not the arming channel
[3743.57] Jack: Yeah
