[75.39] Ian (Mads Tech): Because i've been away most of this week i so um i haven't been i haven't haven't actually been in here i literally this is probably the first time i've been in here so yeah you've got the not the junk corner but the corner we.
[87.23] Ian (Mads Tech): The work in progress corner it is that, to be honest, it is the wing is up there, which i've got to get off my i need to get off my ass and fix that because i haven't finished it.
[97.91] Ian (Mads Tech): There is a flame wheel the rovers they yeah that's sort of my so my junk corner there's even a remember the TBS discovery, the the big one with RC timer 800 arms absolute monster it's got DJ the very old as a big propulsion set on it so it's ridiculously overpowered.
[118.95] Ian (Mads Tech): it's got the same propulsion spec that was on the inspire one, so I used to fly shift six I never really got it to behave because no flight controller it was just overpowered everything I did was overpowered with it.

[218.63] Ian (Mads Tech): remembers the head play hd this was the pinnacle of fpv gentleman oh the tumor when people talk about being face plates for a toaster that's what they're thinking about that's that's yeah these kids fly fpv these days they complain am i gonna buy orcas or my oled gods no no no this is where it was at in the day look at look at the length of that it's that's not a comment i hear very often in relation to any bridge that's gonna put on your head.
[248.63] Ian (Mads Tech): I mean wow it feels like I should get my really old goggles down please hold isn't it cantilevered off your head yeah yeah it's like it's the only thing that's seven inches around me but then again we'll leave that there but yeah mum it was a good oh look at them this was a video back in a day no these these were made
[278.05] Curry: bonleyflywings.co.uk and what it was he basically cut the the foam and you bought a five inch display off ebay and you put your in there there's a little thing for your Fresno lens and i've got an old pair of ski goggles and there's there's velcro here and you stick one of your big external receivers on and you plug it in with your thing and it weighs about

[319.73] Ian (Mads Tech): it reminds me of fishing in some ways and whilst this is a completely the the the mad aspect of
[326.53] Ian (Mads Tech): my term i'm on most forums i'm known as mad angler and the reason for that was i was a massive
[332.45] Ian (Mads Tech): carp fisherman did it for since i was 10 on my own and traveled some parts of the world doing it and
[340.69] Ian (Mads Tech): um if fishing got like fpv in some ways it all started off when we're using cheap horrible gear
[345.89] Ian (Mads Tech): and everything was crap and then over time the gear got better and more expensive and fpv's getting
[351.65] Ian (Mads Tech): that way now for anyone who's like sort of big into fishing there was this the bling period of
[356.13] Ian (Mads Tech): fishing where everything became stainless steel and you had rods with stainless steel reel seats
[360.93] Ian (Mads Tech): and i'm waiting for the fpv carbon now isn't it it's all carbon and then i'm waiting for it with
[366.13] Ian (Mads Tech): fpv quads where we start having the bling you know not only have i got a five inch i got a five inch
[370.53] Ian (Mads Tech): with bling on the bottom of it as well yeah well you've got the rooster the titanium and all that

[383.41] Stephen: um because the price of electronics shot up they tried to balance this out by just running a bunch
[388.93] Stephen: of uh light channels down the side of the quad and putting leds on it the evoke yes which is just
[394.69] Stephen: like a a cheap hatchback approach to building a quad where the guts of it are no better than last
[400.13] Stephen: year but what they've done is to put some really fancy lights on it yeah everyone like a bit of
[404.61] Ian (Mads Tech): bling you've even seen it you know on the express the ras modules you know we've got beta fpv you
[408.53] Ian (Mads Tech): are putting an led so you can light up your crotch when you're flying RGB crotch lighting yeah you
[412.77] Ian (Mads Tech): know who doesn't want their crotch lit up when when they're out in the field so it it's it is
[417.81] Ian (Mads Tech): you know we all love a bit of led that's the problem isn't it i am worried about what that
[421.97] Stephen: says about express LRS users that the demographic that they've decided are we are hobby radio
[428.13] Stephen: enthusiasts who who want crotch illumination i feel like i'm in the middle of a tiny venn diagram
[433.65] Stephen: overlap which is just confusing and insulting that's the world leader fpv or is it express rrs
[440.13] Ian (Mads Tech): that's the problem because you know being honest the the express rs's community towards peter fpv
[446.05] Ian (Mads Tech): isn't exactly um shining is probably the right term to use you know um i think many people's
[451.81] Ian (Mads Tech): opinion towards peter fpv isn't exactly the best at times but i think they're trying you know they
[456.69] Ian (Mads Tech): they take a lot of crap they're doing something a bit different but they are not afraid to have
[462.21] Stephen: a go they do fail a fair bit but they're not afraid to have a go and god bless them for that
[467.09] Ian (Mads Tech): yeah they've i try to be a bit more subjective you know i know there's some darlings of it of
[472.77] Ian (Mads Tech): you know you've got happy model and and others who are seen as sort of early adopters and they
[476.77] Ian (Mads Tech): work with the devs and stuff like that um whereas i think peter fpv has been okay they've had a lot
[482.85] Ian (Mads Tech): of problems i think the biggest complaints with them is they make a product probably not test it
[488.29] Ian (Mads Tech): and put it into the market and suddenly realize it doesn't work properly and then make a vision
[493.09] Ian (Mads Tech): that works and not recall it but they do seem to be getting better at this we've just had the
[498.85] Ian (Mads Tech): problems with the small chip antenna or the pcb antenna and they've openly said luck we've got
[503.65] Ian (Mads Tech): this wrong we're going to replace the ones or give you your money back so that's great to see
[508.05] Curry: they're growing up a bit which is good they did they did seem confused they they asked me the
[512.85] Curry: other day after i did the test on their flat antenna they were confused about why nb would fly
[518.77] Curry: above 150 hertz it's like why people doing this i said well they're racers and they think they'll
[525.97] Curry: get a big response from that and they they they were completely blown out the water on the idea
[532.53] Curry: that people would like to do that and i think hopefully hopefully it's sort of made them think
[537.09] Curry: slightly about really the people people aren't doing what we think they're doing perhaps we
[542.29] Ian (Mads Tech): should change our minds about stuff it is interesting when you get the company's talk like that you
[547.49] Ian (Mads Tech): know i'll be honest i'll be up front b2pv have been very good to me on the channel they've sent
[551.17] Ian (Mads Tech): me stuff to have a look at i've never had a problem with them they've taken feedback i know
[555.49] Ian (Mads Tech): the community gets a bit anti with them at times it does wonder at times how many companies are
[560.53] Ian (Mads Tech): entering fpv just to make money and i think that's where you've just said the you know they're just
[566.69] Ian (Mads Tech): looking at going ah 150 hertz though that's that's fine they they don't want any more than that and
[572.13] Ian (Mads Tech): they almost miss um what the community wants and look i'll be open to the argument of is 150 hertz
[579.89] Ian (Mads Tech): really any better that that's that's that placebo effect you you could that goes down the latency
[585.17] Ian (Mads Tech): route of even hd zero versus dji and a whole other painful hole we'll never get out of but
[593.25] Ian (Mads Tech): you know there is an argument to be said of are we choosing these speeds because it's faster
[600.29] Ian (Mads Tech): or do they actually bring benefit and is there really good data to show the benefit
[606.77] Ian (Mads Tech): because what you generally end up with like was the other day was jb doing that video and i thought
[611.81] Ian (Mads Tech): that was a really good video for anyone who saw it choosing the different um modes and in the end
[618.61] Stephen: but for those who didn't catch the video i think uh ian's referring to a video where uh stingers
[623.97] Stephen: form and jb took turns and they each set their controller's packet rate to either 500 hertz or
[630.69] Stephen: 50 hertz and they had to guess which was which right yeah yeah i mean and it was just interesting
[636.21] Ian (Mads Tech): i love stuff like that because you just sit and go you know is it placebo can they pick it up are
[640.21] Ian (Mads Tech): they noticing a difference is that difference actually making a difference and you know we
[644.85] Ian (Mads Tech): just had the the full hd zero race and what's interesting is i'm not actually convinced digital
[651.33] Ian (Mads Tech): makes racing better for the pilots i think it actually makes it a lot better for the spectators
[657.49] Ian (Mads Tech): but i'm not convinced there's an out and out element of benefit to the pilot because it
[664.53] Stephen: would have been interesting to see i think that the hd zero race that we had recently
[669.73] Stephen: over here in the uk which i think you covered as well yeah there was a fair bit of breakup on hd
[676.69] Stephen: zero but i didn't catch the comparison to analog and i'm guessing that with analog that multiparthing
[683.01] Stephen: would have really murdered the image and made it a lot worse than hd zero yeah like i was there for
[689.81] Ian (Mads Tech): most of the day but i had to leave before the boys put a analog aircraft in here they didn't
[693.81] Ian (Mads Tech): fly analog so there was no analog on the event however what they did do is when i just after
[698.77] Ian (Mads Tech): before i just after i'd left they finished the racing and they put a couple of analog craft in
[703.81] Ian (Mads Tech): the year and there's there's been two different responses one guy tried a little bit and it was
[707.25] Ian (Mads Tech): okay one guy tried it it was completely unfliable the the the the was the race would not have gone
[713.57] Ian (Mads Tech): ahead so i think it was quite a success the problem was the live feed setup wasn't perfect
[719.81] Ian (Mads Tech): it wasn't optimized it was done in such a way to cover off rain because the ideal scenario is the
[727.01] Ian (Mads Tech): boys would have been sitting in the middle of the field down in the middle of the stadium away from
[730.05] Ian (Mads Tech): the wi-fi it gave trenchal rain at 11 a.m so that wasn't an option you know we were always compromised
[736.29] Ian (Mads Tech): on what we were going to do they set up in hindsight i found a better location around the
[741.81] Ian (Mads Tech): corner and i think i covered that in the video where i'd gone around the corner and it was a
[745.09] Ian (Mads Tech): lot better and actually the pilots moved to the themselves if we'd have had the time the inclination
[751.17] Ian (Mads Tech): if we wanted to make it look the best we could have done you could have spent a day walking
[754.37] Ian (Mads Tech): around the place with the spectrum analyzer going okay we need to be here and this is going to be
[758.77] Stephen: best um but yeah there was a good way to learn right and it was a good first outing like they
[763.41] Stephen: managed to get the coverage from beginning to end they didn't go offline the equipment didn't
[767.41] Stephen: break which you know no one mentions like oh the quality wasn't perfect but it didn't break and a
[773.09] Stephen: lot of times you might expect a new set of equipment like hd0 to just go offline and not
[779.09] Stephen: show a signal and it was working all through the day which is testament to you know the fact that
[783.65] Stephen: they've gotten a long way in just a couple of years on that yeah i think it's interesting you know
[788.69] Ian (Mads Tech): um i think i i've ended up in this bit of a weird position where i seem to be a bit of the
[797.01] Ian (Mads Tech): controversial one at times in the last 12 or 14 months and sometimes anything i say gets myself

[811.25] Ian (Mads Tech): but no i mean look hd0 is a very good system is it the answer i don't know it's a proprietary
[819.81] Ian (Mads Tech): system you've got this bit of a war at the moment of people going dji is evil hd0 is fantastic
[825.81] Ian (Mads Tech): well no they're both proprietary systems they're both private companies hd0 can be as evil as
[831.49] Ian (Mads Tech): dji tomorrow is it dji even evil where does people's perception of dji being evil come from
[837.33] Ian (Mads Tech): you know then it's not open source and look we've got the man appear in in the opposite corner to me
[842.21] Ian (Mads Tech): who is paving the way forward with what may be the solution which is open hd it's not there yet
[849.17] Ian (Mads Tech): but it's getting closer and you know i've been watching the videos very closely and it's
[855.01] Ian (Mads Tech): interesting to see the hardware come on this year i think is the real year we will well hopefully
[859.73] Ian (Mads Tech): this year if the chip shortage fixes itself um we might see some hardware that really gets us
[865.17] Stephen: closer are you tempted to try open hd yourself you've probably got the engineering chops to give
[870.45] Ian (Mads Tech): it a good shot yeah for me it's been time i'll be honest my biggest problem is as the channel has

[889.17] Ian (Mads Tech): is something i'm even going to change with reviews i've got myself in a position where
[893.09] Ian (Mads Tech): i have a real world outside of the channel you know i have a full-time job or you have a family
[899.01] Ian (Mads Tech): i have kids i've been lucky in covid and lockdown that it's meant i've been home most evenings
[905.97] Ian (Mads Tech): um that's starting to change hence i've been away this week so my time is becoming infinitely less
[912.93] Ian (Mads Tech): and i have to now try and figure out where's the right balance because there's no anyone can pick
[916.93] Ian (Mads Tech): up a product use it for 10 minutes and say this is the best thing in the world that doesn't help him
[921.49] Ian (Mads Tech): what you need to be able to do is put content together based on
[925.17] Ian (Mads Tech): is what your people ask for experience review should be about experience how you feel about
[933.01] Ian (Mads Tech): a product now everyone's entitled to to agree or disagree with that but it should be at the end of
[939.33] Ian (Mads Tech): day a review is an opinion so you're struggling you're struggling with that reviewers curse which
[944.61] Stephen: is when you become a successful reviewer people send you more products and when you then review
[949.33] Stephen: them then they send you more products and it takes off like a hockey stick and before you know it
[953.89] Stephen: you don't have any time to review the products and you've got a backlog and it's a struggle
[958.29] Ian (Mads Tech): take the word successful out and that's probably where i am right so you know look it's still a
[963.89] Ian (Mads Tech): small channel but yeah i've been very lucky i've had some great companies send me some stuff
[967.57] Ian (Mads Tech): i got a bit backlogged which dragged me behind and then i'll be honest i got to the stage of
[975.09] Ian (Mads Tech): i was very close to giving up reviewing completely in january i made a decision to just stop doing
[980.05] Ian (Mads Tech): it because i can't do everything so what do i do do i review a 30 quid module that beta fpv is
[987.57] Ian (Mads Tech): i'm gonna spend probably 30 hours if i up to 30 hours making sure i know what it's doing i've
[994.85] Ian (Mads Tech): tested i've flown it maybe 30 is a bit extreme but at least five ten hours on it to make sure
[1001.49] Ian (Mads Tech): it's doing what it wants and then go and talk about it for 20 minutes is that viable and in
[1009.89] Ian (Mads Tech): the end and i'd be interested in what carrie's thoughts are because he'll know what the youtube
[1013.81] Ian (Mads Tech): ad revenues are like he'll know what it's you know a review might get 3000 views that's great
[1019.81] Ian (Mads Tech): for the company it's great for the people who want to watch it but is that the best use of what i can
[1025.89] Ian (Mads Tech): do and that that's something i'm trying to balance you know i am a technical person and
[1030.13] Ian (Mads Tech): perhaps my ability is better elsewhere and i didn't cover the zorro for that very reason
[1035.81] Ian (Mads Tech): i just left the zorro slide past because i just felt you're gonna have 10 channels doing the same
[1041.09] Stephen: thing all saying something and they all do it on exactly the same day so a lot of that message even
[1046.69] Stephen: if you do really detailed coverage it gets lost in the noise a little bit yeah yeah and very good
[1054.05] Curry: for radio master but not so good for individual channels apart from people get to obviously flick
[1059.17] Curry: around and in the space of a few hours they've learned this thing of all opinions and they can
[1066.37] Curry: make a they can make a good decision but yeah it's just like also it's here's another five people
[1071.65] Ian (Mads Tech): that review it all in the same day yeah and i feel because you know i try to watch almost all of them
[1079.49] Ian (Mads Tech): the youtube channels i've spoke about or talk about i watch curry i watch gb i watch
[1084.85] Ian (Mads Tech): all of these guys i try to watch but you say i sat there that day and went i'm gonna have to pick
[1088.53] Ian (Mads Tech): three guys because i'm not going to get through 10 videos it's not going to happen um i don't
[1094.21] Ian (Mads Tech): know about you guys i've suddenly really started to use the um the the time 1.5 thing especially
[1100.77] Ian (Mads Tech): on my own content anyone watches my content chuck it on 1.5 i'm way too boring to sit there
[1105.65] Stephen: at normal i'm wondering like for a lot of this stuff it's got to the point where i'm watching
[1109.97] Stephen: maybe 40 minutes worth of content and i'm doing it on youtube but i'm i'm doing it on youtube
[1116.85] Stephen: because that's the way that people can make money out of it and to be honest i'd rather i could read
[1123.17] Stephen: i'd rather see an article with nice diagrams where i didn't have to like pause the video and
[1129.49] Stephen: you know try and zoom in on a little video window i'd rather just if there was a way i could offer
[1137.09] Stephen: my advertising eyeballs or my patreon support or something for written articles i'd almost like to
[1144.13] Stephen: go back to long-form editorials about this stuff rather than everything being video i think it's
[1149.17] Stephen: it's on video because youtube is a successful platform that can monetize it it's not on video
[1155.33] Stephen: because maybe video is the best way to review a radio it's interesting because we've only really
[1160.77] Ian (Mads Tech): got one person in the space who's carrying on with the editorial stuff which is oscar
[1165.81] Ian (Mads Tech): isn't it he's the only one really pushing ahead with the editorial side of it into ufpv by the way
[1174.13] Ian (Mads Tech): and a few others um it it's it's there's a few websites you know you've got the news side you've
[1181.25] Ian (Mads Tech): got gary sos news because it's the news and we've got all the dji stuff which is all tripping over
[1185.57] Ian (Mads Tech): each other for click links i do i you know i spent a long time in rc groups i got probably 25,000
[1191.25] Ian (Mads Tech): plus posts on rc groups and i used to do a lot on the blog section and i used to enjoy that anyone
[1197.49] Ian (Mads Tech): who read it will know i can't spell but um i used to put quite a bit of stuff on me and i do miss
[1204.93] Ian (Mads Tech): it but it again is time consuming um i fell down the youtube rabbit hole unfortunately um and i
[1211.97] Ian (Mads Tech): don't really know how to get out that's probably right a lot of people are echoing these sorry i
[1217.81] Curry: was just gonna say it takes much more effort than you might think to to write something because
[1223.73] Curry: you can get away with quite a lot in video and um that that people will just pick up an understanding
[1229.73] Curry: from you talking about it when you when you have to write it down and i i used to write for i think
[1235.33] Curry: i wrote in the end for like five rc magazines before they all obviously went out of business
[1240.61] Curry: because they're magazines and that was always way more time consuming than doing videos because
[1247.49] Curry: i had to make sure that my my points were all sort of well made and you know that they had to
[1254.37] Curry: have the right level of somewhere between like not an idiot but not a scientist and then like
[1260.21] Curry: like you say you literally have to do diagrams because you couldn't put video content in and show
[1263.81] Curry: these things you'd have to make sure that you're showing the right photos and then those photos
[1268.37] Curry: have to be like publishable um so they have to be all like nicely done and stuff and uh yeah it's
[1275.17] Curry: it's very time consuming it's much easier in in a lot of ways to do um a review in in video form or
[1283.17] Curry: or some sort of point of view in video form where you can just do like a talking head video and sort
[1287.09] Curry: of wing it a little bit more and people people will accept that there is almost a kind of
[1290.93] Stephen: reductio ad absurdum though where if you go to something that's purely spec related like
[1295.49] Stephen: flight controllers people doing video reviews or a flight controller where they just hold up the
[1299.73] Stephen: board in some ways it would just be nice if there was a list for that right yeah exactly and it it's
[1305.33] Ian (Mads Tech): tough you know i'm really bad at the youtube thing you know what people don't realize is i'm
[1310.45] Ian (Mads Tech): really bad at it to to for me to knock out 15 minutes of something can literally be me
[1317.09] Ian (Mads Tech): messing it up for two hours now that's partly because i don't script anything
[1321.33] Ian (Mads Tech): and that's entirely my own fault but scripting it takes time you know scripting it you've got
[1327.17] Ian (Mads Tech): to write the script i'm not very good of reading an auto queue i've i have tried i have tried doing
[1333.25] Ian (Mads Tech): it that way and and there are people who've said having a queue actually makes you better at it
[1338.77] Ian (Mads Tech): i just i just can't do it i can't get the pacing right it's the bit is curry just a natural video

[1379.09] Curry: filming and this looks so shifty yeah me doing this reading my screen and pointing back up i'd
[1386.45] Curry: i'd love to get a proper auto queue where i can just like look at me i'm reading it perfectly

[2314.07] Ian (Mads Tech): around long enough that they in the old days when dji was small you had some active people on groups
[2320.31] Ian (Mads Tech): like arcy groups and others and they used to just send you stuff to try they you know this was when
[2324.63] Ian (Mads Tech): dji was the little company the nazas the motor parks remember when they used to do a lot of parts
[2330.47] Ian (Mads Tech): so i used to do quite a bit with them and then i sort of did a lot more arcy groups and i got to
[2335.67] Ian (Mads Tech): the stage i think it i'll start making a bit of content a video about this so i made a video about
