Massive thank you too. [14.0] Jack: Carlos Campos. [16.0] Jack: Art Faulkner. [18.0] Jack: Sam Dahmer. [20.0] Koel: Mikey Dread. [22.0] Koel: On with the show. [24.0] Jack: Let's Drone Out now. [54.42] Jack: When you're listening to Let's Drone Out, tonight we are joined by everyone's favourite curry kitten. [62.42] Jack: Hello. [63.42] Jack: The man with the moustache, Stephen. [65.42] Jack: Hello. [66.42] Jack: The man who does the socials, Cole. [69.42] Jack: Howdy howdy. [70.42] Jack: My darling wife. [72.42] Jack: I was waiting for it, Bonjour. [74.42] Jack: And I'm right by. [76.42] Jack: Hello, goodnight. [78.42] Jack: Is it true that we were doing like nightmare projects? [83.42] Jack: Is that right? [84.42] Jack: We can do. [85.42] Stephen: I mean, we forgot again, but we can always go back to it. Not a problem. [89.42] Stephen: Jumping off point as bad as any other. [91.42] Jack: Yeah. [92.42] Jack: Because my one, my personal nightmare was the Storm 32 gimbal. [99.42] Jack: I think there's nothing more I hate. [103.42] Curry: He never even got it done, did you? [106.42] Curry: I was so close to getting it done. [109.42] Curry: It was almost working. [111.42] Curry: And then it didn't. [112.42] Curry: And then I got fed up with it. [114.42] Stephen: Did you smash it up? [115.42] Stephen: Tell me what Storm 32 gimbal is. [118.42] Jack: Like, there was, like, I first got introduced to it by a channel called iForce2D. [127.42] Jack: He's a guy who, like, he used to live in Japan and he's lived in New Zealand. [138.42] Jack: And I think, I believe he's friends with Bruce. [141.42] Jack: And he built, like, a camera rig quad. [146.42] Jack: And he, like, weirdly enough, he, like, [152.42] Jack: bought a pre-existing gimbal from Banggood. [157.42] Jack: And I just think that I was just too late. [161.42] Jack: Regards the, you know, regards, like, the sort of, like, gimbal malarkey. [170.42] Jack: Because, like, at the end of the day, like, when I was, whilst I was trying to do it, [174.42] Jack: it was pointless buying, like, a gimbal. [177.42] Jack: If you wanted a camera platform, you just kind of, [180.42] Jack: the price came down where, you know, the Phantom 3 Basic, you know, [185.42] Jack: was, like, a couple of, you know, a couple of quid more. [190.42] Stephen: So this is one of those rarefied pieces of technology that existed in a window [194.42] Stephen: before something easier and better or cheaper came along. [197.42] Curry: Yeah, to explain, back in the day, when people had their F450 frames [202.42] Curry: and they were saying, oh, this is nice and smooth, then the craze became gimbals. [207.42] Curry: And at first, the smoothest gimbal you could get was a belt-driven one [212.42] Curry: before brushless motor gimbals existed. [214.42] Curry: And then it was a two-axis. [215.42] Curry: And then the holy grail of three-axis gimbals. [218.42] Curry: And for a while, DJI did their own three-axis gimbal [221.42] Curry: you could add to the F450. [224.42] Curry: And then we started getting the cheapo ones like this, [228.42] Curry: some of which worked on official firmware, some of which was this sort of hacked. [232.42] Curry: What was it? Alex something firmware? [234.42] Curry: Jack? [235.42] Curry: Alex Moss. [236.42] Curry: Alex Moss was the good firmware. [238.42] Koel: Oh, the Alex Moss, yes. [240.42] Koel: I remember that. [241.42] Koel: Yeah. [242.42] Stephen: And the results are still, like, rougher than you just get [244.42] Stephen: with a GoPros built-in stabilization these days, right? [248.42] Curry: These days, yeah. [249.42] Curry: But back in the day, it was magic. [251.42] Curry: Yeah, this was talking eight years ago probably, wasn't it? [254.42] Jack: Mm-hmm. [255.42] Jack: Yeah, basically. [258.42] Jack: I mean, like, he, he, like, built... [261.42] Jack: This is how much, like, how crazy he got. [265.42] Jack: He, like, built his own jig for it, [269.42] Jack: like, and was balancing a Yami camera. [273.42] Jack: And I even bought, like, a similar, you know, [278.42] Jack: like, pre-built gimbal thing. [281.42] Koel: Yeah, I remember you were trying to get it to work for so long, [285.42] Koel: but it was such a difficult thing to program, right? [289.42] Stephen: Yeah. [290.42] Stephen: The Storm32 was the actual controller board for the IMU. [293.42] Stephen: It wasn't the whole gimbal then, by the sound of it. [296.42] Jack: Yeah. [298.42] Jack: Weirdly enough, he changed, like, the IMU on... [303.42] Jack: Because you could... [304.42] Jack: Like, later on, you had two IMUs, one on the base unit [308.42] Jack: and then, obviously, one on the bottom of the gimbal. [311.42] Jack: And he changed his out for CC3D Micro or something. [317.42] Jack: And, you know, like, by the time I was doing it, [321.42] Jack: there wasn't any of those. [324.42] Jack: I bought the better IMU from Germany, [328.42] Jack: wired that in, still just couldn't get it to work. [332.42] Jack: It was... [333.42] Jack: Chasing the dream. [334.42] Jack: It just... [336.42] Tony: You must have just said something wrong with it, Jack, [338.42] Tony: because you normally fix everything. [340.42] Tony: No. [341.42] Jack: Like, it had... [342.42] Tony: Do you think it was something wrong with it? [345.42] Tony: Or you just couldn't get it right? [346.42] Jack: Maybe it might have been, like, the hobby king motors [350.42] Jack: that I was using were garbage, [353.42] Jack: but the thing is, I bought a brand-new one, [355.42] Jack: because Curry was like, [356.42] Jack: oh, it's the motor, which I don't hold it against you, Curry. [361.42] Jack: That seemed perfectly logical. [363.42] Jack: And, yeah, bought another one. [368.42] Jack: Still did the same thing. [369.42] Jack: If you've still got the video for it, Curry, [373.42] Jack: on your YouTube channel... [375.42] Jack: Maybe. [376.42] Curry: What we had, and to people that don't know, [378.42] Curry: tuning a brushless gimbal is even more involved [382.42] Curry: than, like, tuning a flight controller. [385.42] Curry: And it's something that's, like, nonsensical [388.42] Curry: through different bits of software that you had to do. [391.42] Curry: And I think I had it where I could... [393.42] Curry: Because when Jack and I first met, he said, [396.42] Curry: oh, I've got this gimbal. [397.42] Curry: I was like, oh, I've sorted gimbles out before. [399.42] Curry: My ones are fine. I'll sort it out. [401.42] Curry: And I got it, and I had it two directions. [403.42] Curry: It was fine. [404.42] Curry: But if I then went just above what it could handle, [408.42] Curry: normally, like, a gimbal will sort of bind up [410.42] Curry: and just sort of... [412.42] Curry: And then you straighten it. It's okay. [414.42] Curry: But it just freaked out after that point. [416.42] Curry: It was just like, no, I've gone mental, [418.42] Curry: and I'm never coming back, is what it did. [421.42] Koel: It would just whip around all frantically, right? [424.42] Koel: Yeah. Absolutely crazy. [426.42] Stephen: When was the last time you got it out, [428.42] Stephen: got the gimbal controller out, [430.42] Stephen: and actually tried to use it as being dead for a long time? [433.42] Stephen: Or do you get it out every now and then [435.42] Stephen: and think, I'm going to make this work? [437.42] Jack: I sold that custom rig [439.42] Jack: to someone who wanted to build a camera rig, [442.42] Jack: and I think I gave them the working gimbal [446.42] Jack: that I eventually got working [448.42] Jack: and the Storm32, and was like, just take it. [453.42] Tony: I'm surprised you didn't burn it [455.42] Tony: and say it on fire and record it. [458.42] Jack: I basically put a F7 board on there, [463.42] Jack: and it had the mini diversity receiver from TBS. [473.42] Jack: I pretty much completed that whole build. [478.42] Jack: It had Sunnysky motors and everything. [482.42] Jack: It was just the premium everything. [485.42] Jack: Sunnysky? [487.42] Jack: Fully carbon frame, arms, a lot. [495.42] Jack: The thing just didn't weigh anything, [497.42] Jack: and it was folding. [500.42] Jack: Our mutual friend, Dan Upton, designed the body for it, [506.42] Jack: and it was the R64 arms that I cut down. [510.42] Jack: It didn't weigh anything, [513.42] Jack: and you could stick about a 3,000 milliamp battery on there. [518.42] Jack: That was the biggest issue. [520.42] Jack: Currie's showing the whole quad. [523.42] Curry: I made this for a user group for it. [529.42] Curry: When we get to a certain point, [532.42] Curry: we're getting this weird roll, which shouldn't happen. [536.42] Curry: You could almost fly it if you didn't do anything silly, [540.42] Curry: but it wasn't quite right, [542.42] Stephen: so you couldn't trust something. [544.42] Stephen: Do not fly it with any of the axis between 10 and 12 degrees. [548.42] Stephen: It would be less than 10 and 12 degrees [550.42] Stephen: or more than 10 and 12 degrees, but not. [553.42] Curry: That's right. [554.42] Curry: Then the gimbal motors would just say, [556.42] Curry: oh, we give up. [557.42] Curry: They would just turn off. [559.42] Curry: Then we'd go all floppy and refuse to do anything anymore. [562.42] Curry: One of the things you have to do is measure [565.42] Curry: how hard it can push against you. [569.42] Curry: For the motors, definitely. [572.42] Koel: I play around with camera gimbals, [578.42] Koel: and I don't know how similar it is to those types of gimbals. [581.42] Koel: I'm guessing maybe somewhat similar, [583.42] Koel: but just having to adjust the motor strength [588.42] Koel: and then dial it back just a little bit [590.42] Koel: so it doesn't fight you and give you weird vibrations. [594.42] Koel: I was actually doing it yesterday [596.42] Koel: because I have a gig coming up that I'm going to be using my gimbal, [599.42] Koel: and I haven't touched my gimbal for about two or three months now. [603.42] Koel: It's always a fun time playing with that. [606.42] Koel: I'm trying to get it to be stable and whatnot. [609.42] Jack: One of my favorite Curry Kitten videos [614.42] Jack: is Curry Kitten with a clone, Alex Alexmos gimbal controller. [623.42] Jack: This is the man I need to take my gimbal to. [636.42] Curry: This is the camera I was flying through at the time, [641.42] Curry: and this is my FPV view. [643.42] Stephen: For audio viewers, we are seeing a serene view of Curry [646.42] Stephen: flying over a football field, [648.42] Stephen: and then it suddenly starts headbanging. [650.42] Stephen: The camera is headbanging in situ under the port. [653.42] Tony: You have to land and try to control it with that view as well. [658.42] Curry: This had a Nazarin at the end of the day, [661.42] Curry: so I could just return home. It's no big deal. [664.42] Curry: It's a similar sort of thing, [667.42] Curry: and I ended up replacing this gimbal [669.42] Curry: because what happened was a voltage regulator seemed to go bad. [673.42] Curry: I replaced that, and it seemed to work, [675.42] Curry: and then this is when it freaked out, and then I replaced it. [679.42] Curry: I think I replaced this one. [681.42] Curry: I also made this huge quad out of a Nazar with a free-axis gimbal. [688.42] Curry: Then what happened is DJI started bringing out quadcopters, [693.42] Curry: which weighed much less with better gimbals and better cameras. [697.42] Curry: Why am I playing with this? [699.42] Curry: That whole phase of let's put gimbals on things had stopped. [702.42] Curry: Was it the gimbal, or was it the gimbal controller that was to blame? [708.42] Curry: Hard to say whether it was the motors or the controller [712.42] Curry: or combination of it all, really. [715.42] Stephen: I've seen Andy RC's videos, [717.42] Stephen: and he always seems to be flying with a head tracker [719.42] Stephen: any time he puts any wing in the air. [721.42] Stephen: He's got a head tracker on it, [722.42] Stephen: and that doesn't seem to give him too much problem, [725.42] Stephen: but he's just got an FPV camera, so it's much... [728.42] Curry: A head tracker's just on a servo. [731.42] Curry: Right, yeah, that's what I'm saying. [733.42] Stephen: Is it the gimbal, or is it the gimbal controller? [735.42] Stephen: Is it the brushless motors that are just rubbish, or is it the...? [738.42] Stephen: It's a combination of it all, I believe. [742.42] Stephen: A very jelly... [744.42] Stephen: Quite a heavy camera. [746.42] Stephen: Oh, that was a good one, too, that one. [748.42] Tony: I've still got her in my roof with a... [752.42] Tony: I've never had any trouble, thank God, [754.42] Tony: because you know what I'm like, I'll just lob it against a wall, [757.42] Tony: something like that, and I'll try to stick it together with cello tape, [760.42] Tony: but luckily I had no problems with mine. [763.42] Curry: So basically what you're saying, though, Jack, [765.42] Curry: is you had something that didn't work, but you sold it to somebody [768.42] Curry: and said, you said... [769.42] Curry: No, I got it. [771.42] Curry: What a master salesman. [773.42] Jack: No, I bought a working gimbal [778.42] Jack: that was like three... [783.42] Stephen: A team salesman's broken one, honest. [785.42] Jack: And then connected that to it, [789.42] Jack: and then put a F7 board on there, [798.42] Jack: and obviously the new iNav. [801.42] Jack: Back when I was doing that and stuff wasn't working, [805.42] Jack: I think we were on iNav 1.6 or something. [810.42] Jack: I mean, the wooden copter, that was on iNav 1.4. [817.42] Tony: That was brilliant, I think. [819.42] Jack: Yeah, that was just an absolutely amazing piece of kit [824.42] Jack: that I probably shouldn't have sold, because it was just hilarious. [829.42] Jack: Just completely made out of wood and flew great. [833.42] Jack: But I would have walked by now, so... [836.42] Jack: Yeah, it would have been like sacrificed to the fuel shortages, [841.42] Jack: I'm fairly sure. [844.42] Jack: But that was just one project. [846.42] Jack: But by the time I put that flight controller [851.42] Jack: and that long-range sort of stuff, [853.42] Jack: I just completely lost interest. [855.42] Jack: I was like, I'm totally done. [858.42] Jack: You know, I'm just like... [861.42] Stephen: Yeah. [862.42] Stephen: Yeah, because these days you can drive gimbals [865.42] Stephen: and camera stabilization direct from iNav, right? [867.42] Stephen: You only have one IMU instead of one actually on the camera, [871.42] Stephen: but you can just sort of calibrate it [873.42] Stephen: and get iNav to drive a gimbal, can't you? [876.42] Jack: Yeah, so, yeah. [878.42] Jack: By the time I got to it, I was just like sick to the back teeth of it, really, [884.42] Jack: because, you know, like the... [887.42] Jack: Look, I think what done me was like the Ollie who made the firmware, [893.42] Jack: he was just like so unhelpful, you know, [897.42] Jack: and was just periodically like more interested in developing [905.42] Jack: like the motors where they have like a sort of tracking of where they are. [910.42] Jack: I can't remember what that's called now. [912.42] Jack: Censored. [913.42] Jack: Yeah, censored gimbal motors and stuff like that. [916.42] Jack: And, you know, like was uploading stuff of his that just worked fine. [921.42] Jack: But, you know, I almost think that it probably would have worked [926.42] Jack: a bit better if, because I was putting it into axis gimbal mode, [931.42] Jack: I think by the time the development had moved on into three axis [937.42] Jack: and because I was selecting two axis, they were like, [940.42] Jack: who uses two axis anymore? [942.42] Jack: And, you know, that something got lost in translation in the code [947.42] Jack: and just didn't work that well. [949.42] Jack: And I reckon if I had like, yeah, you know, [953.42] Jack: you know, like a similar thing I had was like the, [964.42] Jack: what is it? [968.42] Jack: OpenTX, that's it. [970.42] Jack: OpenTX, like flashing some of the old transmitters with that, [975.42] Jack: they dropped compatibility, but all the code was in there. [979.42] Jack: And like if you just happened to not read like why it wouldn't flash or, [988.42] Jack: you know, like, but the options are still there, [991.42] Jack: you have to go on the Wikipedia or GitHub and then read that, [995.42] Jack: like they dropped the compatibility and then you have to go all the way back [1002.42] Jack: and even then the, like, you know, to the point where it still worked. [1008.42] Jack: So you went back like, you know, to 1.5 of OpenTX. [1013.42] Jack: When I flashed it to that version that was the last known working version, [1018.42] Jack: some of the switches didn't work. [1020.42] Jack: The code that reallocated the switches to different pins of the at mail chip [1028.42] Jack: just, you know, just didn't work. [1030.42] Jack: And, you know, you kind of had to, you know, [1032.42] Jack: keep going back further and further back till that worked. [1036.42] Jack: So, you know, it's, you know, in the name of progress, [1041.42] Jack: you know, like, if you're there at the time and you flash that, it works great. [1046.42] Jack: But, you know, stuff keeps moving forward and then other things break. [1053.37] Stephen: I do wonder how long EdgeTX is going to keep some of those old radios alive. [1058.37] Stephen: It's going to be a whole crop of quite radios all used the same chip. [1063.37] Stephen: Someone's going to go, oh, it doesn't fit. Drop them. [1067.37] Stephen: I wonder how long that will be. [1069.37] Stephen: It might be like 20 years, you have no idea, but could be six months. [1074.37] Jack: Yeah, like, you know, even the SD card for the Taranis is like missing key things. [1082.37] Jack: So I don't think they're like maintaining the Taranis bus. [1086.37] Stephen: Pretty sure, like, thousands of people have that Taranis. [1091.37] Stephen: We did have a bunch of problem trying to get Jack's Taranis to work with EdgeTX, by the way. [1097.37] Stephen: Not exactly sure what was going on there, but it wasn't happening. [1100.37] Jack: I've got it done now. It worked. [1103.37] Jack: What was the problem in the end? [1107.37] Jack: Yes, Andrew. [1109.37] Jack: No idea. [1111.37] Jack: Don't update. [1113.37] Curry: Well, if it works, don't do that. [1115.37] Curry: Going back to nightmare builds, if I may, and it's still on it. [1120.37] Curry: It's still up there on the wall, just out of shot. [1123.37] Curry: It is the FX79 Buffalo. [1126.37] Curry: This was supposed to be my big long range plane. [1130.37] Curry: It is a six foot span wing, which can carry loads of battery. [1135.37] Curry: And I was very careful to build it up with the best components I could get, [1139.37] Curry: thinking it was going to be a long range wing. [1141.37] Curry: A Dragon Link version one in there with... [1144.37] Curry: I got a 4-3-3 dipole made up by big those who used to do antennas for everybody. [1151.37] Curry: And I got a My Fly Dream autopilot, which was like one of the best you could get back there. [1161.37] Curry: And build it up very carefully. [1164.37] Curry: And we took it out for its maiden. [1168.37] Curry: This is the amazing maiden fro by my buddy Neil here. [1173.37] Curry: Very big. [1174.37] Curry: Okay, let's give it full whack. We gave it full whack. [1177.37] Curry: And that... [1179.37] Jack: The noise. [1181.37] Tony: That is game over. [1183.37] Curry: It's the sound of disappointment. [1185.37] Curry: Something went wrong. We're not sure went wrong. [1187.37] Curry: Really? [1188.37] Curry: It didn't even look like it stalled. [1190.37] Curry: It just looked like it turned into the ground somehow. [1193.37] Curry: And we didn't understand it. [1194.37] Curry: We haven't rewind. [1196.37] Curry: No, because we rebuilt it. [1198.37] Curry: I rebuilt it very carefully. [1200.37] Curry: I patched it up. [1201.37] Curry: There's all sorts of fillet involved and stuff. [1204.37] Jack: We wasn't trying to flip upside down in your miraculous. [1208.37] Jack: I've configured it completely correct, but just upside down. [1211.37] Curry: We checked all the surfaces, everything. [1213.37] Curry: And then I went out with my buddy Richard. [1216.37] Curry: What is going on? [1217.37] Stephen: Maybe you could describe for our audio viewers, [1220.37] Stephen: let's face it, most of the people that catch this will have. [1222.37] Curry: In the very first one, we threw it. [1224.37] Curry: It went up in the air and it came straight down really hard on its nose. [1228.37] Curry: And exploded into bits. [1230.37] Curry: Worst case scenario. [1231.37] Curry: On the second flight, Richard wanted to try throwing it. [1235.37] Curry: He said, let's go for an unpowered glide. [1237.37] Curry: I'm going to put my fingers where the 11-inch prop is. [1241.37] Curry: Don't start the motor. [1242.37] Curry: So I was like, well, that's fair. [1244.37] Curry: So I agreed not to power it. [1246.37] Curry: And we did a glide. [1247.37] Curry: And you can see the glide. [1248.37] Curry: Beautiful. [1249.37] Curry: Nothing wrong with that, is it? [1251.37] Curry: Nice. [1253.37] Curry: Then he's like, OK, I'm going to... [1255.37] Curry: I don't want to throw it like that because, you know, I play the piano. [1258.37] Curry: So he said, I'm going to hold it underneath. [1261.37] Curry: It's a little bit awkward, but it's got these holes and I'll throw it. [1264.37] Curry: And he did. [1265.37] Curry: And he threw it straight up in the air and smashed it on the floor again. [1271.37] Curry: It looked like a clean break. [1273.37] Curry: Yeah. [1274.37] Curry: And so we then... [1276.37] Curry: I rebuilt it yet again. [1278.37] Curry: Oh my God. [1279.37] Curry: Because I was getting good at rebuilding it at this point. [1282.37] Curry: And what happened this time was better, although not to begin with. [1288.37] Curry: So promising. [1289.37] Curry: Better, he says. [1291.37] Curry: Better. [1292.37] Tony: Is it the same guy who got into it three times? [1295.37] Curry: Yeah, there's only a certain amount of people I can get to hold that are played in a certain way. [1301.37] Curry: And we decided that we should do it like we were gliding it again. [1305.37] Curry: But he said, I'll do another practice throw. [1308.37] Stephen: Yeah. [1309.37] Stephen: I'm wondering if the disaster is entirely the plane and maybe to some extent the operators. [1316.37] Stephen: What's going on with the radio? [1317.37] Stephen: It looks like you've got something stuck halfway up the radio antenna. [1321.37] Stephen: Yeah. [1322.37] Stephen: So that is a DragonLink module, which is plugged in by PPM. [1328.37] Curry: So, yeah. [1329.37] Curry: So the first time he threw it, he managed to basically crash it into the ground. [1333.37] Curry: But it wasn't too bad. [1335.37] Jack: And then his take two. [1338.37] Curry: Oh, it's up. [1339.37] Curry: Yes. [1340.37] Curry: Beautiful. [1341.37] Curry: And we were like, this is amazing. [1342.37] Curry: And it actually flew really nicely. [1345.37] Curry: It was really, really smooth. [1346.37] Curry: It's a big wing. [1348.37] Curry: It's relatively heavy. [1351.37] Curry: And so if it ever shows, we got some nice, smooth footage. [1356.37] Jack: But what happened? [1358.37] Jack: Turn the volume down. [1359.37] Curry: Get rid of that. [1360.37] Curry: Oh, thank you. [1361.37] Curry: We flew it along. [1362.37] Curry: We tuned the autopilot, which is a lot of little bits and pieces to do with the return [1368.37] Curry: to home and the loiter. [1371.37] Curry: And basically, you're tuning it so the speed is right. [1374.37] Curry: It's not wobbling. [1375.37] Curry: It's getting its angles right. [1376.37] Curry: There was lots to do. [1378.37] Curry: And eventually, we got that done. [1381.37] Curry: I landed it. [1382.37] Curry: And the landing is absolutely beautiful. [1384.37] Curry: That's what the AP looks like. [1386.37] Curry: We didn't have a very good VTX reception on this. [1391.37] Curry: But yeah, it was working. [1393.37] Curry: It was properly trimmed. [1395.37] Curry: It was properly sorted. [1396.37] Curry: It was looking really nice. [1398.37] Curry: DragonLink worked really nicely. [1400.37] Curry: Run the bar. [1401.37] Curry: Yeah. [1402.37] Curry: And we said, I know, we'll do a chase because that's what you do. [1405.37] Curry: You've got your mate there. [1406.37] Curry: He's got a wing. [1407.37] Curry: I've got a wing. [1408.37] Curry: And at that point, the autopilot, I turned it on and all the servos just started going [1414.37] Curry: twitchy twitchy like this, going absolutely mental. [1417.37] Curry: And it just wouldn't work anymore. [1419.37] Curry: And what had happened is the autopilot had just absolutely freaked out. [1423.37] Curry: It's such a great plane. [1426.37] Curry: But the AP broke, which is the thing. [1432.37] Curry: And then I couldn't get a replacement because they were like, oh, it's your fault. [1436.37] Curry: So then I did a video saying, don't trust this company because my autopilot broke [1442.37] Curry: and they didn't do anything on your side, which they eventually then replaced it. [1446.37] Curry: And it's been sat there since. [1449.37] Curry: And I haven't flown it. [1450.37] Curry: The only thing I've done with it is I made another video called, can I make the box [1457.37] Curry: that it came in fly better than the actual plane itself? [1462.37] Curry: So what I did, I literally made one of the flight tests style. [1469.37] Curry: Let me get rid of that volume. [1471.37] Curry: Oh, man. [1472.37] Curry: I can't believe this. [1473.37] Curry: This is back in 2015. [1474.37] Curry: Everybody. [1475.37] Jack: This is how old this is. [1476.37] Jack: Look at young Cory here. [1477.37] Jack: Now you would use his knees on the floor. [1479.37] Stephen: Oh, do not rely on YouTube for video archival. [1484.37] Stephen: You could put the video in, but you can't necessarily get the video out again. [1489.37] Koel: I spy a classical guitar there, too. [1492.37] Curry: Oh, yeah, we've got them all here. [1495.37] Curry: Yeah, we eventually managed to. [1497.37] Curry: This took two goes to get flying because like everything was just made literally of cardboard. [1504.37] Curry: And what I didn't understand at the time is if you make your wing services from cardboard, [1508.37] Curry: they're a bit flexible. [1510.37] Curry: So when I did fly it, my finger was all the way back. [1514.37] Curry: That is it. [1515.37] Curry: That is literally made out of the box. [1517.37] Jack: Oh, somebody throw a wing properly. [1519.37] Curry: It flew. [1520.37] Curry: I say it flew, but my wing is all the way back, giving full elevator up all the way [1526.37] Curry: around. [1527.37] Curry: And I'm like, we might just have to bring this in and land it. [1529.37] Curry: So the flight was quite short, but you can see it's flying. [1533.37] Curry: It's doing its thing. [1534.37] Curry: But yeah, we FPV'd it. [1536.37] Curry: We flew it. [1537.37] Curry: And my overall conclusion was that the box did fly better than the wing itself. [1543.37] Curry: I still don't know what was up with it. [1545.37] Curry: But it is still there on the wall at some point. [1548.37] Curry: Look at this for landing. [1550.37] Curry: Boom. [1551.37] Curry: That's not really it then. [1554.37] Curry: But yeah, at some point, I will take this out and try and fly it again. [1558.37] Curry: But it's you know what it's like with big things. [1561.37] Curry: They need a big area. [1563.37] Curry: I can't launch it myself particularly well. [1566.37] Curry: I need a volunteer. [1568.37] Curry: And all my volunteers have, as soon as someone throws it and it explodes, they're not so [1574.37] Curry: keen on throwing it anymore. [1575.37] Curry: And I'm like, I don't want to do that. [1577.37] Curry: What if it goes wrong? [1578.37] Tony: Yeah, exactly. [1579.37] Tony: But yeah, that was my nightmare build. [1581.37] Tony: You've got another big one that you smashed at them, haven't you? [1584.37] Tony: What was the other big? [1585.37] Tony: It was a glider, wasn't it? [1587.37] Tony: That was the glider. [1589.37] Curry: Yeah, I've repaired that as well. [1590.37] Curry: That's ready to go again. [1591.37] Curry: But that wasn't so much tonight. [1593.37] Curry: That was a misunderstanding. [1595.37] Curry: So it was, well, I've forgotten what it's called now. [1597.37] Curry: But it was from, I think we've had Rob on, haven't we, who designed this. [1603.37] Curry: And it's 2.6 metres. [1604.37] Curry: Very big. [1605.37] Curry: Yeah. [1606.37] Curry: And when I built it up, I didn't realise that the tail section wasn't attached properly. [1613.37] Curry: It was just on with a bit of tape. [1616.37] Curry: And when we were flying it, and Neil was there as well. [1619.37] Curry: My friend launched it the first time. [1621.37] Curry: He said, your tail looks like it's gone wonky. [1623.37] Curry: And he said, did you screw that in? [1625.37] Curry: I was like, it was already attached. [1626.37] Curry: What? [1627.37] Curry: And he's like, no, I had to be screwed in. [1629.37] Curry: So in flight, the V-tail, which started out like that if the plane is level, had gone [1635.37] Curry: round like this. [1637.37] Curry: And Rob said to me, oh, do you want me to land it line of sight? [1641.37] Curry: Because he's better at line of sight than me. [1643.37] Curry: And it's like, I was flying perfectly happy FPV. [1646.37] Curry: It was going fine. [1647.37] Curry: But so I said, OK, gave him the control. [1650.37] Curry: He's like coming around, he just stalled it, and it's just splat. [1654.37] Curry: And that broke. [1656.37] Curry: And that was, I had to get like fibreglass sheets and resin to put that back together [1662.37] Curry: because it's like composite material broke and stuff. [1666.37] Curry: But yeah, that's another huge wing. [1668.37] Curry: Well, not a huge wing, huge glider that I need to have a go at. [1673.37] Curry: Because that was really complicated to set up as well. [1675.37] Curry: I had to set up crow braking through the use of iNav flaperons plus actual flaps. [1685.37] Curry: Was it flaperons or was it? [1687.37] Curry: I don't know. [1688.37] Curry: Basically, the brake goes like that. [1690.37] Curry: Yeah, so it crows. [1691.37] Curry: There wasn't an actual crow section for it. [1693.37] Tony: Can we see that this summer, please? [1696.37] Curry: Depends on how much room I've got and how many friends I've got willing to throw big planes for me. [1702.37] Jack: Yeah, we need some proper wing people, you know, some proper socks and sandals. [1709.37] Curry: To be fair, I did. [1710.37] Curry: And I had the designer with me just happened to crash it into the landing. [1716.37] Frank: This episode was recorded in front of a live online audience, [1719.37] Frank: downloaded and edited to make sense when it played audio only, [1722.37] Frank: censored to please the iTunes people, hosted on the internet, [1725.37] Frank: forwarded through to your podcast provider, [1727.37] Frank: downloaded, playing on your device and is now playing in your ears. [1731.37] Frank: All thanks to our Patreons. [1733.37] Frank: Consider joining them and you'll also get other online benefits. [1736.37] Frank: Find out more at patreon.com forward slash let's drone out. [1741.37] Stephen: Talk about my particular disaster build now. [1746.37] Stephen: I had one that when I was learning about tuning and I thought more power is definitely better and I wanted to build micros. [1755.37] Stephen: I'd heard great things about these little 1106 motors. [1758.37] Stephen: So I procured a whole bunch of sunny sky 1106 motors that were like I think 6500 or 7000 KV [1767.37] Stephen: and claimed to suck down a ludicrous amount of amps, but go incredibly fast. [1772.37] Tony: Huge amounts back in the day. [1775.37] Stephen: Yeah, little little blue motors and they were meant to go like absolute demons. [1780.37] Stephen: And I had these and I wanted to kind of cram as much as I could in. [1783.37] Stephen: So I'd looked at the diatone range a couple of years back. [1787.37] Stephen: This is 2019, but very early 2019 late 2018. [1793.37] Stephen: So I got like an R249 frame, a little diatone frame and an HD camera. [1801.37] Stephen: And the sunny sky motors and then because I wanted to put the HD camera in there, I didn't have room for a VTX and an FC and an ESC. [1810.37] Stephen: And you can get small VTXs. [1812.37] Stephen: So I was like, right, I'm going to have to get an AIO when they just come out. [1817.37] Stephen: So I got an HGLRC AIO and thought, yeah, this is going to be fine. [1821.37] Stephen: It'll like, it'll do 3S. [1823.37] Stephen: It was 2 to 3S and it said it would do something like 15 amps per ESC, which should be enough for a modest two and a half inch build, but that should be all right. [1836.37] Stephen: And I've got this thing all built up and it was okay. [1839.37] Stephen: The video signal was nice. [1841.37] Stephen: I think I had a run cam split in there. [1843.37] Stephen: That was nice. [1844.37] Stephen: Got some 1080p recording. [1846.37] Stephen: Just couldn't tune the thing. [1847.37] Stephen: And I kept trying to tune it to get the wobbles out because I wanted a nice smooth HD video. [1851.37] Stephen: And I was tuning and tuning, trying to just push it a little bit more so it would be smooth and wouldn't have any kind of any oscillations in steady forward flight. [1861.37] Stephen: And I just couldn't quite get it there. [1863.37] Stephen: And then it started jittering a whole bunch. [1867.37] Stephen: And oh, it's not good. [1869.37] Stephen: Put another battery on, try and loosen the tune a little bit and give it another go. [1873.37] Stephen: I took it up and it just nosedived slowly and caught fire. [1879.37] Stephen: Like not just a little bit of smoke, but full on. [1883.37] Stephen: The whole stack was just not the LiPo. [1886.37] Stephen: The whole stack was on fire. [1888.37] Stephen: The flames out of the ESCs. [1890.37] Stephen: The VTX was on fire. [1893.37] Stephen: The HD camera was on fire. [1895.37] Stephen: Any bit of plastic around all of that was all on fire. [1898.37] Stephen: So I managed to rip the LiPo off it and it was just this little funeral pyre of a quad. [1905.37] Stephen: The entire thing was absolutely knackered. [1908.37] Stephen: Burned the insulation off all the motor wires. [1913.37] Stephen: Burned the run cam camera. [1915.37] Stephen: The fire from the stack was big enough that it actually destroyed the camera. [1920.37] Stephen: Bizarrely enough, the only part that survived was the plastic top plate. [1924.37] Stephen: I don't know what that plastic was, but it fared a lot better than all the motor wires. [1929.37] Stephen: Yeah, that was something. [1932.37] Stephen: I did finally learn how to build a nice HD quad that flew well and had a bit of power. [1937.37] Stephen: But I'm still somewhat concerned about those sunny sky motors and exactly how much power they may have pulled. [1945.37] Stephen: Too much maybe? [1946.37] Stephen: Yeah, a bit too much I think. [1948.37] Stephen: A lot too much. [1951.37] Tony: At least your fire was outside. [1954.37] Tony: When Jack catches fire, he's normally inside. [1959.37] Curry: Did you get pictures of the aftermath of the fire? [1963.37] Stephen: I was faintly traumatised. [1964.37] Stephen: I did carry it around in a box for a while. [1968.37] Jack: Like a little said, hamper. [1970.37] Jack: Ready to bury. [1972.37] Stephen: But I finally stripped it down, I think. [1974.37] Stephen: Washed it all off with IPA and yeah. [1979.37] Stephen: It's gone. [1980.37] Stephen: I do have another one of those boards because I bought two at that point. [1984.37] Stephen: And this is when AIOs had just appeared and everyone was poo-pooing them. [1989.37] Stephen: And I think, in retrospect, probably for a good reason, these days they're fairly bulletproof. [1993.37] Stephen: But back then, yeah, I just I do not trust them. [1997.37] Stephen: And I'm not sure if I'm going to use its twin. [2000.37] UNKNOWN: 15 amps. [2001.37] Stephen: And it said 2 to 3S and I think they just didn't. [2004.37] Stephen: At 3S, it wasn't doing 15 amps. [2006.37] Stephen: It just wasn't to be trusted. [2008.37] Stephen: Not at all. [2009.37] Stephen: And even now, if someone says, oh, I want to get an AIO, what should I get? [2014.37] Stephen: I usually tell them to find the one with the biggest current throughput that they can [2019.37] Stephen: because those boards just flat out lie. [2022.37] Stephen: Like the FETs on them are tiny. [2024.37] Stephen: And if they say it's 30 amps channel, it's going to be like really more like 20 amps. [2031.37] Stephen: So you just got to give yourself a lot of headroom if you're going to do an AIO build. [2036.37] Jack: Oh, that sucks. [2040.71] Jack: Tone. [2041.71] Stephen: It happens. [2042.71] Tony: I don't have any disasters whatsoever to talk about. [2046.71] Jack: Come on, you've got loads. [2048.71] Jack: Yeah. [2049.71] Jack: Well, we should talk about them for you. [2051.71] Tony: No. [2052.71] Jack: EGI without the update and, you know, just spinning upside down. [2058.71] Jack: You've got loads. [2059.71] Jack: Come on. [2060.71] Tony: I can't remember any of them. [2062.71] Curry: What about the ZO-DART where you tried to run like 15 amps out of the 5-volt of the VTX? [2069.71] Tony: There's no video footage or evidence or pictures. [2072.71] Tony: This is just me. [2073.71] Tony: There is. [2074.71] Curry: I can't picture this. [2075.71] Curry: Because every time you tried to launch it, everything would turn off. [2077.71] Tony: All lies, I tell you. [2080.71] Tony: I don't really. [2082.71] Tony: I can't remember. [2084.71] Tony: My ex-class caught fire the last time I flew it. [2089.71] Tony: That's the only disaster. [2090.71] Tony: But it's been flying for three years without anything going wrong with it. [2094.71] Curry: It didn't like it when you tried to do smoke that one time, did it? [2097.71] Curry: Maybe it'd fall out of the sky. [2099.71] Tony: Yes, that was a bad idea. [2101.71] Tony: That giant shunt. [2104.71] Tony: It literally turned off the flight controller when I switched the switch, [2108.71] Tony: which we tested on the ground and maybe should have tested with props spinning. [2114.71] Tony: Because it, yeah, flicked a switch, turned on the smoke. [2117.71] Tony: It's had the smoke on, mind you, but it fell out of the sky. [2122.71] Tony: Well, that was only, what, an hour building. [2124.71] Tony: It was back in the air, thanks to everyone at MA4, maybe? [2132.71] Jack: Five. [2133.71] Tony: Was it? [2134.71] Tony: No, it wasn't five, was it? [2136.71] Jack: Four, maybe, yeah. [2138.71] Jack: Four, I think. [2139.71] Tony: MA4, it must have been. [2140.71] Jack: I helped. [2142.71] Tony: Everyone did. [2143.71] Tony: Everyone got their hands on. [2144.71] Jack: The overcharge pack? [2146.71] Jack: That was a beauty. [2149.71] Tony: Yes, that is, I'm not going to lie, that is actually true. [2156.71] Tony: What happened? [2157.71] Tony: Is Clive in the chat? [2160.71] Tony: I've got two 4S packs. [2163.71] Tony: I've literally strapped together to make eight, yeah? [2166.71] Tony: So they're running together. [2172.71] Tony: So I've put one on charge. [2175.71] Tony: Got off and done my business because there was people, you know, there. [2179.71] Tony: So I could do other stuff, go and get something to eat or whatever. [2182.71] Tony: This is a show as well. [2184.71] Tony: Last year, I think, this was. [2187.71] Tony: And then come back. [2188.71] Tony: And I was like, oh, it's charged. [2190.71] Tony: I'll take that out and put it in again. [2192.71] Tony: But I managed to plug the same one back in somehow. [2197.71] Tony: Someone must have talked to me or whatever. [2199.71] Tony: So pressed George at 8am. [2202.71] Tony: See you later. [2204.71] Tony: And then Clive comes running over. [2206.71] Tony: Tony, your battery's going to blow up. [2209.71] Tony: It's like, I can't even remember. [2211.71] Tony: It was like double, wasn't it? [2214.71] Tony: It was ridiculous. [2216.71] Tony: It didn't puff or anything. [2218.71] Tony: But it was basically a bomb. [2224.22] Curry: Did you get extra flight time out of it? [2226.22] Curry: What's that? [2228.22] Curry: I said, did you get extra flight time out of it? [2230.22] Curry: Or did you decide to discharge it in a different way? [2232.22] Tony: I don't remember how we discharged it. [2233.22] Tony: We plugged something in and ran it for a few minutes. [2236.22] Jack: Very, very slowly is the answer. [2239.22] Tony: I think we ran it for a few minutes with props off, [2243.22] Tony: but it wasn't doing anything, so we had to put props on. [2245.22] Tony: I think we plugged it into a 4S little mini quad or something [2248.22] Tony: and just ran it up and ran it back down to the normal proper [2254.22] Tony: amperage of the battery. [2256.22] Tony: But yeah, that was quite scary, little bomb there. [2261.22] Tony: I've done that twice as well, so I didn't learn from where it started. [2266.22] Stephen: At least you're learning. [2268.22] Stephen: I always just balance charge stuff so it complains. [2271.22] Stephen: It's like, hang on, I don't see as many cells as you say there are. [2274.22] Curry: If you've got two batteries and you plug one in, [2278.22] Curry: it's easy to plug the wrong balance lead into it. [2281.22] Tony: Exactly what I did. [2283.22] Curry: You can mess this up sometimes if you're parallel charging. [2285.22] Curry: You can get the wrong ones mixed up there. [2288.22] Tony: It was saying, the XT60 was the one having all the power put in it. [2293.22] Tony: The balance lead was off the old battery, so it was like, [2297.22] Tony: well, I'm charging, nothing's happening. [2300.22] Curry: We're putting energy in, but it's not coming up. [2303.22] Tony: We just keep going. [2305.22] Stephen: Don't they throw an error if it sees that there's one voltage across the XT60 [2310.22] Stephen: and a totally different voltage across the balance connector? [2313.22] Stephen: That would seem like a really obvious thing to check for. [2316.22] Stephen: Not Tony's charger. It's discount. [2318.22] Stephen: Depends how much you pay for them, I guess. [2321.22] Tony: It's one of the pretty good chargers. [2326.22] Jack: It just can't read the voltage whilst charging at the same time. [2331.22] Jack: It's too much. [2332.22] Tony: Well, it was reading the voltage off the other battery. [2335.22] Tony: The balance lead was off the other battery. [2338.22] Tony: The balance lead, it was saying, keep charging. [2342.22] Tony: Keep going. [2344.22] Tony: Keep going. I'm at 3.8. [2346.22] Tony: The XT60 was the one taking all the energy in. [2350.22] Tony: All right, I'll keep charging then. [2352.22] Tony: So it could have been at 3.8 forever. [2355.22] Tony: I could leave it on for 10 hours and it would have said 3.8 [2359.22] Tony: because it was charging the other battery. [2361.22] Tony: That's the thing. [2363.22] Jack: How it didn't blow up, catch the water cabin, [2368.22] Jack: the tarpaulin on fire and just maimed people at wings and wheels, I don't know. [2376.22] Tony: Let's not say where it was because I'm hoping to go back there this year. [2382.22] Jack: Have you fixed the X-Class? [2384.22] Tony: Still on the wall in bits with fire, smoke and everything. [2388.22] Curry: Oh, geez. [2390.22] Tony: Yeah, that needs to be done at some point. [2394.22] Curry: So Jack, expect an X-Class left at your place soon to fix. [2398.22] Jack: No, I don't know. I ain't got like... [2402.22] Jack: The thing is, he needs to get like, you know, new plates and everything probably. [2407.22] Jack: That's probably a word with fossil. [2409.22] Tony: Oh, fossil will sort me out. [2411.22] Tony: It's just, yeah, getting it all back together and flying. [2417.22] Tony: I'd like to fly it again because it flies really well. [2420.22] Tony: I'm not going to race it anymore. [2422.22] Tony: It's too slow now on 8S, but it's nice to turn up at a show [2426.22] Tony: and just do, you know, flips and rolls with a big quad. [2429.22] Tony: And it flies really well, so I'll just... [2431.22] Tony: And it says, what are you on now? [2433.22] Tony: 14S. [2435.22] Tony: 14, 12s and 14s. [2438.22] Stephen: So this didn't get you hooked on the X-Class bandwagon then, Tony? [2442.22] Stephen: You're not going to go and build another. [2444.22] Tony: Too much money. With all my hobbies I've got, [2446.22] Tony: I literally just have to even my money out about everything. [2451.22] Stephen: Would you build something in between, like a beast class instead of an X-Class? [2457.22] Tony: I've got a 7-inch drone, but no, no, I wouldn't really. [2461.22] Tony: It doesn't appeal to me, to be honest. [2464.22] Stephen: I've been following some of the builds from this guy up north, [2467.22] Stephen: of course himself a noisy boy FPV. [2470.22] Stephen: He's built some monster quads. [2473.22] Stephen: Yeah, he's built some monster quads that are quite interesting. [2476.22] Stephen: I don't know how he gets the space behind them. [2478.22] Tony: I've seen some nice 10-inch stuff really fast, [2480.22] Tony: and, you know, they're really agile as well. [2483.22] Tony: I mean, Martian McFly, my McFly, [2486.22] Tony: built a 7-inch Tomahawk the same as mine. [2490.22] Tony: I mean, I've built mine for long-range cruising, [2492.22] Tony: and he's literally... [2494.22] Tony: Well, you were there at the... [2496.22] Tony: Yeah, we saw it. [2498.22] Tony: It rips. [2500.22] Tony: So, yeah, you can have fun with bigger quads. [2503.22] Tony: You really can. [2505.22] Stephen: Yeah, I was tempted to... [2507.22] Stephen: If I had a field, I'd definitely buy or build a beast class. [2511.22] Stephen: Just, like, the macro America has caught my eye from Catalyst Machine Works. [2516.22] Stephen: That looks a bit of a laugh. [2518.22] Stephen: That's like one of their America race frames, [2520.22] Stephen: but scaled up to a 9-inch. [2522.22] Stephen: Looks a lot of fun. [2524.22] Curry: Yeah. [2525.22] Curry: It's just not something you do casually, [2527.22] Curry: because the components are a lot more expensive, aren't they? [2529.22] Tony: That's the thing. [2530.22] Tony: Like, if I want to go 12S... [2532.22] Tony: The motors are about 100 apiece. [2534.22] Tony: The clifes put in the chat, the ESCs are 100 pound each. [2538.22] Tony: You need to buy five. [2540.22] Tony: You know, you need a spare, [2542.22] Tony: and then you need, you know, it's just... [2544.22] Tony: You need more batteries. [2546.22] Tony: It's just like a grand, isn't it? [2548.22] Tony: So, you know, I've got other hobbies. [2551.22] Tony: I've got bikes to maintain, [2553.22] Tony: and boats and guns I've got to buy and stuff, so... [2561.22] Tony: But the summer's coming, and I'm gonna fly again, so... [2565.22] Tony: I'm looking forward to getting out and doing some more flying, but... [2568.22] Tony: It's just been... [2570.22] Tony: I've lost the attraction-ness of flying every single day is gone. [2576.22] Tony: You know, when we were first getting into the hobby, we were out. [2580.22] Tony: I was dragging Jack out of bed, going down Hidden Valley. [2583.22] Tony: It would be freezing cold, frosty. [2586.22] Tony: All winters we'd be doing it for a couple of years, [2589.22] Tony: and that kind of is gone now. [2592.22] Tony: I'm gonna turn it into a fair weather flyer, I'm afraid. [2596.22] Jack: I did. [2598.22] Jack: I did find a video of us a lot, [2604.22] Jack: like me, you, Simon Braddas, [2607.22] Jack: and we were just surrounded with dog walkers, [2610.22] Jack: and it was just mud everywhere, [2612.22] Jack: and I was just like, why are we doing this? [2615.22] Tony: Freezing cold. [2617.22] Jack: Yeah, this is dumb. [2620.22] Tony: Yeah, so that's gone now for me, but, you know, summer's coming. [2625.22] Tony: Well, you wouldn't think so. [2628.22] Tony: Not this week. [2630.22] Curry: I did try and fly on Sunday, but I ended up going to the field, [2635.22] Curry: going through the cows, sitting down, [2638.22] Curry: looking at the GPS on the wing that has got the Oaken board [2642.22] Curry: installed with OpenHD, [2644.22] Curry: and noticing the GPS seemed to be not enjoying the fact [2648.22] Curry: there was a massive Wi-Fi adapter on there [2650.22] Curry: because it was saying, seven sats, no, four, no, zero, no, seven again. [2655.22] Curry: And when I have to, like, launch it and put it into return to home [2659.22] Curry: so I can go sit back down and put the goggles on, [2661.22] Curry: I'm like, this isn't gonna work. [2663.22] Curry: Because it's gonna lose the signal on launch or something. [2667.22] Curry: So I ended up sitting there for an hour in the field, [2669.22] Curry: trying to figure it out, and then saying, [2671.22] Curry: no, not flying this, go back again. [2673.22] Curry: So that was a nice walk. [2675.22] Curry: I saw some cows, I sat down on some ground. [2678.22] Curry: That was it. [2680.22] Jack: At least you were sensible enough not to fly it. [2684.22] Curry: I've had too many instances of, it'll probably be okay, [2688.22] Curry: and knowing what happens, or just one last battery, [2692.22] Curry: that sort of thing, if something's a bit dodgy. [2695.22] Tony: One last battery. [2697.22] Tony: Yeah. [2698.22] Tony: Don't ever do it. [2699.22] Tony: Always dodgy. [2700.22] Tony: Take that battery home and discharge it. [2703.22] Stephen: I've been doing a bit of flying. [2705.22] Stephen: I've had a bit of fun messing around [2707.22] Stephen: with all this H7 Malarkey with Betaflight. [2709.22] Stephen: They seem to have finally fixed that latest release. [2712.22] Stephen: No more worries with the H7 stuff. [2715.22] Stephen: That's been an uphill struggle. [2717.22] Stephen: I actually wrote a target for this GHE MCU stuff. [2721.22] Stephen: I wrote one of the unified targets [2723.22] Stephen: so that the damn thing would work properly, [2727.22] Stephen: and asked people to put the ESC outputs on the oscilloscope, [2731.22] Stephen: because I don't have one. [2732.22] Stephen: To be honest, we'd have a hard time figuring out [2734.22] Stephen: what on earth was going on. [2735.22] Stephen: They were like, yeah, finally fixed it. [2736.22] Stephen: Had to change the speed the GPIO pins worked. [2739.22] Stephen: Apparently, the pins were too fast, [2741.22] Stephen: and it was just like the signal was decaying. [2743.22] Stephen: It wasn't holding the level at the end of the message. [2746.22] Stephen: That was it. It's all good now. [2748.22] Stephen: So, Betaflight 4.3 should be out soon. [2750.22] Stephen: And someone managed to hack the DJI goggles as well. [2753.22] Stephen: Cheers. [2754.22] Stephen: Yeah, root hack. [2756.22] Stephen: Yeah, rooted it. [2757.22] Curry: That's pretty amazing there, 7. [2760.22] Curry: Well, that's why they've stuffed out another update, isn't it? [2763.22] Curry: Please update to this. It'll start downgrades. [2765.22] Curry: No one is going to be upgrading now. [2767.22] Stephen: Does it hack in firmware? [2768.22] Stephen: No one at all. [2770.22] Stephen: I don't think they can force you to upgrade [2772.22] Stephen: when you activate currently. [2773.22] Stephen: I'm sure they'll change that approach, the little so-and-so's. [2776.22] Stephen: But, yeah, currently, they don't force you. [2779.22] Stephen: And, yeah, you've got all the same OSD menus [2781.22] Stephen: as you get with the analog VTX. [2783.22] Stephen: You get the menus you can step through to change your PIDs [2786.22] Stephen: and to do all the business. [2789.22] Stephen: Mess around with it. [2790.22] Jack: Sorry for promising. [2792.22] Jack: Yeah. [2793.22] Jack: What was I going to say? [2795.22] Jack: What FETATEC EOC do you want to buy? [2799.22] Stephen: Well, they brought out a 12S. [2802.22] Stephen: I think it's a 20 mil or a 30 mil 4N1. [2805.22] Stephen: And it's the only 4N1 on the market that goes above 8S. [2809.22] Stephen: I know there's three or four 8S. [2812.22] Stephen: There's a really fancy T-motor one that's $150 or $200. [2817.22] Stephen: It's 80 amps, 8S. [2819.22] Stephen: There's the one I've got, the Fox Air Reaper, [2822.22] Stephen: which comes in a couple of sizes. [2824.22] Stephen: They're either 60 or 65 amp 8S. [2827.22] Stephen: And there's a cheap HGLRC Zeus one, which does 50 amps, 8S. [2831.22] Stephen: And then this FETATEC one, only 45 amps, 12S. [2835.22] Stephen: 12S, mini quad, 4N1. [2840.22] Stephen: Pretty awesome. [2841.22] Stephen: Just a neat thing to play with. [2842.22] Stephen: It probably only takes the FETATEC protocol, [2844.22] Stephen: so you're forced to run it with the rest of the FETATEC stack, [2847.22] Stephen: which would be a little bit annoying. [2849.22] Stephen: But, yeah, just be a cool toy. [2853.22] Jack: Sorry. [2854.22] Jack: Just having a little Google of their products from FETATEC. [2857.22] Stephen: It's like an HV set. [2860.22] Stephen: FETATEC HV set. [2862.22] Stephen: It's not on their page. [2864.22] Stephen: I think it's like a trial product that a few people have leaked about. [2867.22] Stephen: A guy in Germany did a video, so it's not under NDA or anything. [2871.22] Stephen: But it's not officially released, I don't think. [2874.22] Stephen: I mean, even they're officially released stuff you can't buy [2877.22] Stephen: because it's in stock for about 20 minutes and then gone again. [2883.59] Curry: 12S, mini quad sounds like a bit of a weird thing. [2886.59] Curry: Bit of a giggle, though. [2888.59] Curry: Yeah, I suppose it's like you're building it because you can [2891.59] Curry: rather than this would be good. [2893.59] Curry: Yeah, just to see what happens. [2894.59] Stephen: You should. [2895.59] Stephen: Balesafe built a 10S, so it's got these little GMB 5S cells [2900.59] Stephen: and runs two of those in series. [2904.87] Stephen: Just be interesting to see how it runs. [2905.87] Tony: You've got to have high KV as well, then. [2908.87] Stephen: Low KV. [2910.87] Tony: No, I want you to run high KV. [2913.87] Stephen: I think he's got like... [2915.87] Stephen: Christ, he's got 900 KV or something. [2918.87] Stephen: Yeah, but then you just get a lot of diminishing returns [2921.87] Stephen: after a point because your props are all flattened out [2923.87] Stephen: and everything, aren't they? [2924.87] Tony: Well, I used to run the EMAX 2600 KV on 5S. [2929.87] Tony: That was fun. [2930.87] Stephen: Yeah. [2931.87] Stephen: That's about right, though. [2933.87] Stephen: That's not too bad. [2934.87] Stephen: 2500 KV. [2936.87] Stephen: People are running 2000 KV on 6S now, [2938.87] Stephen: so they're taking the piss already. [2940.87] Stephen: That's just a standard racing spec. [2942.87] Stephen: I think Min Chan Kim's race motors are like 2000 KV [2946.87] Stephen: and he runs 6S on those. [2948.87] Stephen: Just nice to mess around with stuff, you know? [2953.21] Stephen: But yeah, as Caroline Tyler points out, [2955.21] Stephen: you can get Doom on the GGI goggles. [2958.21] Jack: Oh, yeah. [2960.21] Stephen: Oh, Balesafe spec here. [2962.21] Stephen: He said he's running 10S with 1100 KV 2207s. [2968.21] Stephen: Jesus, man. [2970.21] Stephen: That's probably sort of about 1950 to 2000 KV [2974.21] Stephen: on 6S equivalent, right? [2976.21] Jack: Yeah. [2977.21] Jack: Have you got any footage for yourself? [2979.21] Jack: Can you show us something? [2983.45] Curry: Did you get your 8S build working in the end? [2985.45] Stephen: It was... [2986.45] Stephen: Yeah, it's working. [2989.45] Stephen: I just hit something and knocked out an arm, [2991.45] Stephen: and then I doubled up the arms, [2993.45] Stephen: but I haven't bothered to actually drive anywhere and fly it [2996.45] Stephen: because the weather's been just all over the place. [2998.45] Stephen: I was standing in the sun taking a call in the park [3001.45] Stephen: the other day, and then like 20 minutes later, [3004.45] Stephen: there was a peal of thunder and the skies were grey [3007.45] Stephen: and it was hammering it down with rain. [3009.45] Stephen: I had to run indoors. [3011.45] Stephen: So it's just all over the place. [3013.45] Tony: It's not been great. [3015.45] Curry: You know, it's bad when you look in your garden [3017.45] Curry: and then the furniture you used to have is sort of [3019.45] Curry: tornadoing around like you're in the Wizard of Oz or something. [3023.45] Tony: No, my green bin went flying down the driveway today. [3029.45] Tony: Nice. [3031.45] Tony: Yeah, cool on camera. [3033.45] Koel: Yeah, it hasn't been the best in Canada either. [3036.45] Koel: I've had like one decent day [3039.45] Koel: where I was able to get a quick little flight in, [3041.45] Koel: but it's been rainy and yeah. [3044.45] Tony: Great skies like us. [3047.45] Stephen: Oh, you pulled it. [3049.45] Stephen: Fail safe on his 10S build here. [3052.45] Stephen: He's kind of a lunatic, Ethan, on a regular quad. [3055.45] Stephen: So I'm not sure how much is the pilot [3057.45] Stephen: and how much is the quad here, [3059.45] Stephen: but it's certainly a capable machine he's got. [3062.45] Stephen: Holy ****. [3063.45] Stephen: That spins like a boss drill, doesn't it? [3066.45] Stephen: It really does. [3067.45] Stephen: He's got some reflexes on him as fail safe. [3069.45] Stephen: Everything's just a blur. [3072.45] Stephen: It's like the Matrix. [3074.45] Stephen: Correct us if we're wrong, but he usually [3076.45] Stephen: flies like with a Runcam Orange and no stabilization as well [3079.45] Stephen: just to make all of us feel even worse about our flying skills. [3083.45] Stephen: Yeah. [3085.45] Stephen: That thing's shifting. [3087.45] Tony: Nice. [3090.34] Tony: Just a feel and a couple of trees. [3092.34] Curry: Yeah. [3093.34] Curry: Make your own fun. [3094.34] Curry: That's all you need, isn't it? [3095.34] Curry: It's just luxury having a feel. [3097.34] Curry: I think if there's something that stops [3099.34] Curry: a sort of easy, able to fly, [3101.34] Curry: it's like if you could walk out your door and fly, [3104.34] Curry: then you'd probably do it a lot more often. [3106.34] Curry: If you have to make a big plava of it [3108.34] Curry: and load up the car and drive for 40 minutes [3110.34] Curry: and then watch out for dog walkers, [3112.34] Curry: it'll become a bit of a hassle, doesn't it, sometimes? [3115.34] Stephen: Yeah. [3116.34] Stephen: Well, I don't regret anyone getting an exercise. [3118.34] Stephen: The whole lockdown thing did actually force a lot of people [3122.34] Stephen: out to the parks and fields, [3124.34] Stephen: which made it a little bit harder to go for a fly. [3126.34] Tony: Oh, dear. [3127.34] Tony: Don't talk to me about the overweight ladies in their gear [3133.34] Tony: running in lockdown. [3135.34] Tony: Oh, my God, it's funny. [3137.34] Stephen: I won't follow that one up. [3140.34] Stephen: But yeah, it looks like a bit of a giggle running tennis. [3145.34] Curry: Yeah, running anything that sounds silly should be done just for fun. [3151.34] Jack: Have you guys practiced for the bonus pod and the fire? [3158.34] Jack: Don't forget, if you're a lovely Patreon, [3162.34] Jack: we're going to be doing a bonus pod [3164.34] Jack: about reviewing your video clips to do with fire. [3169.34] Jack: So if you have done that, [3173.34] Jack: or if you haven't, go to our Discord and post it in the video section [3180.34] Jack: of your various flights involving fire. [3187.65] Stephen: And I will post a link to the server in the chat here [3191.65] Stephen: so that people can come find it. [3194.65] Jack: Yeah. [3195.65] Jack: So yeah, come and hang out. [3198.65] Jack: If you're not a Patreon and you submitted a pretty good video, [3205.65] Jack: we'll send you a PM link so you can join and watch. [3211.65] Jack: If it's a particularly good video, [3213.65] Jack: we'll have a quick flick through before we start. [3217.65] Jack: So keep an eye out on the Discord. [3220.65] Jack: Join the Discord. [3222.65] Jack: If you want to be a Patreon and support us, [3225.65] Jack: it'll be amazing because it means that the show can keep going for longer. [3229.65] Jack: We can continue paying the editor and uploading. [3233.65] Jack: And everything's great. [3236.65] Jack: And we just, you know, we love you guys. [3240.65] Jack: Anything else, guys? [3242.65] Jack: You're good. [3243.65] Jack: You're ready for this? [3244.65] Koel: I mean, unless you guys want to see me crashing my drone last time I flew. [3249.65] Koel: Yes, please. [3251.65] Koel: All right. [3252.65] Stephen: Yes, of course we do. [3254.65] Stephen: We like even a question. [3256.65] Stephen: Let me see. [3257.65] Koel: Wait. [3258.65] Koel: Share screen. [3259.65] Koel: Okay. [3260.65] Koel: Hold on. [3262.65] Koel: Found a little spot close to where I live, [3264.65] Koel: which is I could get away with because no one was around. [3267.65] Koel: But it's kind of tough in Toronto to find spots to fly. [3270.65] Curry: I would like to see your videos. [3273.65] Curry: More Canadian themed. [3275.65] Curry: I want to see at least one moose or a bear in the next one. [3279.65] Koel: I have to drive about two hours north to do that. [3282.65] Koel: That's fine. [3283.65] Stephen: We'll accept that. [3284.65] Stephen: Are you kind of in a metropolitan area then? [3286.65] Koel: Oh, yeah. [3287.65] Koel: I live literally right downtown Toronto. [3288.65] Koel: So I had to, I found a spot which is about 15, 20 minutes. [3291.65] Koel: It's, I don't really know what it is, but there was some open space. [3294.65] Koel: I'm assuming it's private property, but there were dog walkers. [3297.65] Koel: So it's very brown. [3299.65] Stephen: It looks like you set your camera to brown mode. [3302.65] Koel: No, just everything is very brown right now. [3305.65] Koel: Well, this day specifically, but you can see kind of like the city. [3310.65] Tony: You see the city just looks like you're maybe flying in England, [3314.65] Tony: gray clouds, no leaves on the tree. [3316.65] Stephen: Yeah. [3317.65] Stephen: Yeah. [3318.65] Stephen: A bit browner though. [3319.65] Tony: It's not. [3320.65] Tony: It is a little bit browner. [3321.65] Stephen: We are a bit. [3322.65] Stephen: We don't get cold. [3323.65] Stephen: So the snow never gets around to actually killing stuff. [3325.65] Stephen: So it's like muddy and a bit greener and dark rather than muddy and browner [3330.65] Stephen: and dark. [3331.65] Tony: I wasn't trying to crash. [3333.65] Koel: Yeah. [3334.65] Koel: It wasn't that bad. [3335.65] Koel: Like I was able, I mean, you can see, I was able to, um, okay, [3338.65] Koel: hold on. [3339.65] Koel: I was able to fly away from it. [3341.65] Koel: So if, uh, well, it's not really a crash if you can fly away from it. [3346.65] Stephen: Good. [3348.65] Jack: All right, guys. [3349.65] Jack: That is all we've got time for. [3351.65] Jack: Uh, you, you've been listening to left show now. [3354.65] Jack: Uh, you've been joined by everyone's favorite curry kitten. [3357.65] Jack: Good night. [3358.65] Jack: Everyone's favorite little, uh, ESC file starter, Stephen. [3363.65] Jack: Cheers. [3364.65] Jack: Thanks everyone. [3366.65] Jack: The man who does the, uh, thumbnails. [3369.65] Jack: Cole. [3370.65] Jack: See you. [3371.65] Jack: My, uh, there's always a fire in our bed. [3375.65] Tony: My darling. [3381.65] Jack: Always saying don't be on fire, but it's constantly lighting things on fire. [3386.65] Jack: I'm bright until I fly. [3387.65] Jack: Thank you. [3388.65] Koel: Good night. [3391.65] Koel: Telemetry lost.
