[70.28] Curry: And there's no jack it's just us three tonight now normally will kick off with a serious big cuz normally we're quite light hearted and it's all quite fun and games but we have to announce some sad news today one of our friends are big supporters of the show here at wacky west we've learned has passed away.
[88.4] Curry: Earlier this month and we're all quite sad about it i think most of us chat to him at some point didn't know that anything was wrong but he's no longer with us unfortunately.
[100.16] Curry: So we wanted to say that to to pass in our respects as a rp west and now we'll carry on with our normal sort of light hearted regular podcast.
[114.44] Curry: So guys what's been happening gopro gopro the gopro bones I've actually prepared a screen grab this this is this is the real big news today and it's big news because like if you're in the UK you are you can't get it yeah well this is what happened in the entire world you can't get it unless you live in a small portion of north america and which can.
[141.76] Curry: So if you go on to the gopro com site and you can say i'm in the UK I want to hear a 10 black please give you the price a price like 100 quid above the regular gopro 10 well you get a lot for your money don't you they take that battery they don't just take out one screen they take out two whole screens for you it's like having a for our isn't it you know this is it if you have the racing edition of a fast car where they they've like it's 10 kilograms lighting because we took some stuff out it costs like an extra
[171.76] Curry: 20 grand more money this is what the bones is but we can't get it i don't know why it yeah audio tech saying it should be 100 less well it should be even less than that because if you buy a regular right just just to put it in like comparison a gopro 10 black is currently 379.
[196.08] Curry: But that includes this this dodgy subscription thing that you can cancel that but you can still get it for like 100 quid cheaper than the stuff taken out i heard it was 50 dollars a hundred pounds a hundred pounds we say 10 you got you could buy that and then and then risk the hundred quid taking it apart yourself yeah i mean i i was quite like steven you were you were slightly unimpressed by i was
[226.08] Curry: like you know what you'd pay a bit extra there's a bit more extra weight but it's the lack of hassle it's having some of the standard things there like being able to remove the lens and having it in a regular sort of gopro box just looked a little bit more robust than the naked version so i would be all forgetting this type of camera and this would weigh less than a session would it's a bit of a weird shape to fit on your quad but i still think it would work and that's what really myths me like if you go to
[256.08] Stephen: places like gep rc or beta fpv they did naked versions of these other gopro cameras and they followed a similar model right you paid a bit more than the regular camera because they bought one of the regular cameras might bought a damaged one or whatever but they bought a regular camera and they stripped parts of it and they put it in a lightweight shell and it was the same basic shapes the regular camera it wasn't compact like a session but it was lighter and you paid more for it and what cheeses me off
[286.08] Stephen: is that gopro the people who make these things who have access to the pcbs who have access to the lenses and the sensors instead of producing something that is either cheaper because they can build straight out of their parts bin instead of having to buy a complete unit and throw bits away they're charging more for it and it's not a convenient shape like if i was thinking oh gopro yeah let's let's get a camera and make it a nice shape
[316.08] Curry: for fpv let's sort of squish it up and make it as narrow as possible so it doesn't stick outside of the quad it would be a shape of a session and it ain't but but here's the thing yeah so gopro pretty big company pretty they sell an awful lot of gopros every every man and their dog on the ski hill or mountain biking or whatever has got a gopro they the reason i think it's a positive step is like we've got fpv our little tiny niche hobby involving a certain type of
[346.08] Curry: quad we're flying around and they notice that people are stripping these apart to put them on lightweight quads to save weight and they're like okay we'll do something now it would take an awful lot of resources and stuff to remake the session camera with the gopro 10 internals and put it out there for what is essentially a very niche market but doing this they can like okay we can make a couple of changes to the body we can take this this and this out and they can do it quite quickly and that kind of fits
[376.08] Curry: in my opinion sort of the niches of fpv is like okay we'll bring this thing out we'll we'll give it us only because we don't know anything and we're idiots and we'll see how it sells that's kind of i think it's like testing the water as opposed to anything but it's nice i think that they've they've noticed us and that they're saying okay we'll support you in some way i'm not saying it's bad it's just this is what people like geprc and beta fpv have been doing for years and like geprc and beta fpv
[406.08] Stephen: companies that are probably just a couple of blokes in a garage somewhere in china they're not huge they're not an international presence like gopro and so i was just expecting gopro to deliver more than what we'd seen from the prior naked gopros from you know naked naked gopro sevens and eights and nines that you'd got from other vendors it's not good either it's a step in the right direction it's totally overpriced though isn't it i mean i wouldn't really want to take a gopro part and try my best
[436.08] Curry: i've watched tommy tommy's video and he was like you know i've took a couple apart and ruined it he said he's killed a couple isn't he but this is the equivalent price in the us by the way where it's three nine nine somehow when that gets converted to pounds it goes up and we've also got um brandon beamed in the chat saying he's got two of them for review for his magazine going to put it through his paces and and i notice we don't see an awful lot about the footage and i guess that's because it's going to look exactly the same as
[467.58] Curry: a gopro 10 because that's essentially what it is just stripped down it's just uh the fact that the mounting is a bit different but the um if we've kind of finished about the bones the other thing gopro also released today uh not today but i noticed a video on yesterday was then some sort of new gopro player which had real steady doesn't work in the uk doesn't work in the uk no i've downloaded it and i'll press on the bit where it says smooth out your footage even though it's smooth any
[497.58] Tony: way and it says not available in your country right i've got as far as downloading it and it says add footage i was like oh all my footage is in my video editor at home i'll go i'll put it on on mountain bike video which is smooth anyway because hyper smooth on a mountain bike on the chest is really good and i was like pressed over there on the right hand side and it was like not available in your country and i've done on instagram i was like not available in the country and they said
[527.58] Stephen: they sent me links and stuff and i was like it's just it don't work what are you talking about so i don't know i agree with brandon um i had some flakiness with my smoke 4k which is the insta 360 kind of equivalent camera they did a naked version that was officially endorsed by insta 360 and that was probably three or four years back now it feels like gopro has taken a while to catch up um
[557.58] Stephen: with a few of the weaknesses compared to a gopro they're not the same camera they're different they're good at different things the insta 360 focused a lot on this kind of after the fact stabilization option but i just feel like you know with a couple of years to respond to a smaller competitor in insta 360 like gopro could have redesigned a pcb or done something well let's face it this is good news though because they've
[588.96] Stephen: they've been ignoring demand for smaller cube cams or lightweight cams all together for quite a while and this is a kind of tentative acknowledgement of the market if we see it a second iteration of this then i think we can say they're serious
[618.96] Curry: but right now this could just be a flash in the pan i'm hoping it's not i think it's a very much less test it and see what happens but but to like re to redesign the whole like case and pcb and stuff is is extra investment which they might not get back given the numbers of people that may or may not buy it but see how this one goes i guess and if it's if it works out particularly popular i mean if you can get it for that price and you're a professional
[648.96] Tony: drawing pilot and can use it in commercials on that it's not a lot of money but for us mere mortals you're not doing any of that it's still i think overpriced especially when you're taking a lot out of it and you've got to wire it up and solder it and stuff yourself and if you're not on board to the whole subscription bandwagon yeah you got to do that as well they'll be on ebay in a couple of days we'll see
[678.96] Stephen: you never know you might even see uh prices driven down if you know people are grabbing second hand gopro tens and building similar naked versions as they did with the eights and the nines there might be people like geposse or beta fpv pushing the prices down by saying well you can buy the official hero 10 black bones for 400 dollars but we'll do one for 350 from some boards we found on ebay or whatever so get some smashed up hero tens and
[708.96] Curry: make naked cameras out them i mean what's the other problem with hero 10 is the um codex formula right we were talking about this is what we're talking about this is a very exciting conversation everybody we were talking about codex and the way they smell this is um h264 versus h265 for all you excited people in in a gopro um 10 if you're filming 4k above 30 frames a second
[738.96] Curry: then it will switch over to the hevc file which is an h265 codec which is very very efficient i mean they can put out really um quite small files compared to h264 in terms of the amount of space they take up but if you want to play that back and your pc isn't particularly up to date or you've got a laptop then it might sort of give you like a bit of a slideshow and if you try and
[767.28] Curry: process h265 into h265 video what andyrc was on our chat today and he said something like his seven grand
[775.12] Curry: pc took like 16 hours to render out a 10 minute h265 file yeah it is a bit desperate crazy it's madness why would you do that h264 i don't know there's there's not really a reason to render it out like that because when you upload it to video uh youtube it just
[793.84] Stephen: you kills it converts it into their own stuff anyway and murders it yeah i tried vp8 vp9 just to be
[802.8] Stephen: super nerdy because i think that's what google used internally because google had this big
[807.68] Stephen: well go back to the dawn of time you may remember trying to play videos on pc's
[813.76] Stephen: what microsoft windows back in the day was this uphill struggle of windows didn't ship with any
[819.76] Stephen: video codex right you had to get all these freaking codec packs and install all sorts
[824.64] Stephen: of dodgy rubbish so that you could play mpeg videos and the reason for that was because there
[830.32] Stephen: was a lot of licensing issues around video encoding and you had to pay the mpeg consortium
[835.68] Stephen: a licensing fee when you used it and when this became instead of people just converting videos
[840.96] Stephen: on their pc's to google converting videos in the cloud the fact that there was a licensing
[846.48] Stephen: fee and a bunch of patents that meant you had to pay someone when you used mpeg caused google to
[852.4] Stephen: throw all that out and invent an open source alternative which is the vp8 and vp9 stuff
[859.68] Stephen: and so that i'd have thought would be what youtube would really want you to use but when i tried to
[865.28] Stephen: encode in vp9 it was about the same speed as h265 which is you know like getting blood from a stone
[872.48] Stephen: was not fun these days i think h264 is cool like you unless you want really small files because
[881.84] Stephen: your short space just whack up the bitrate to 100 megabit plus and and keep it in h264 and it's all
[888.56] Stephen: good even even like 60 or 70 megabit gives you really really good image i'd have thought 4k
[896.32] Curry: there is there is not too much to to uh choose from when i had a look at the h265 file versus
[903.2] Curry: h264 they looked identical one was just a smaller file size but even for me to and i was using this
[911.92] Curry: four minute video i did because i was filming in 4k 120 it took an hour 20 to render that out versus
[920.8] Stephen: you know like so let's be clear there's not an image benefit of h265 versus 264 there's no
[927.28] Stephen: image benefit at all there's a file size benefit it's more complex to encode and it's more complex
[932.8] Stephen: to play and that means you can have less data on your disk that's all look you can have one h264
[940.0] Stephen: at like 1.2 gigs and an h265 at like 900 megs and they'll look the same but you know the h264
[948.96] Stephen: one's bigger so just f it you know use a bit more space whatever more time to do everything else
[955.84] Tony: yeah well i'm i'm i've done a 264 18 mini 18 minute video of me camping and it was two and
[964.24] Tony: a half hours to render on a probably a 10 year old laptop what i'm using at the moment
[971.76] Stephen: what do you guys use to render all your videos um final cut pro final cut because there's usually
[982.32] Stephen: all right because there's there's a few knobs and twiddly bits i use like handbrake and a bunch of
[988.0] Tony: other stuff i have i have to use handbrake to do anything um slow mo so if i'm doing anything over
[997.28] Tony: 30 frames my laptop goes no can't do it so i have to do handbrake first render it in handbrake which
[1005.92] Tony: takes half hour for literally a 10 second slow mo video and then i have to put it back on and then
[1013.44] Stephen: do it again it's a nightmare that is a pain so there's usually a bunch of encoding profiles
[1019.52] Stephen: and with h264 and 265 you can basically say whether you care about file size
[1024.48] Stephen: or quality speed you can have the same amount of quality but right yeah and it takes longer
[1034.16] Stephen: to encode it but you end up with a smaller file or it's faster to encode it and you get a bigger
[1038.4] Stephen: file and so you typically just want to say ah screw it and just go as fast as possible yeah
[1043.36] Tony: who cares because you're holding it to youtube anyway and then you're going to delete your stuff
[1048.72] Curry: off your pc or whatever yeah i was just trying that that gopro play thing and i had the same
[1054.88] Curry: thing so it's come up and it says real steady stabilization not available for this video

[1066.8] Curry: this was filmed on gopro hero 10 it says all shooting modes available yeah i meet that but
[1071.44] Curry: it doesn't say anything about why this one doesn't work that's weird i thought this was like a free
[1076.32] Curry: way of getting um real steady but it's like i think people have said in the chat real steady
[1085.52] Stephen: oh someone's mentioned the dji action 2 saying the dji action 2 ways not much but i think if you
[1093.44] Stephen: look at we had sync fpv who did a bit of a comparison on the 2 like dji action 2 and gopros
[1100.32] Stephen: and while that action 2 is is lightweight its image quality is not all that it's a
[1107.28] Stephen: it's got a bit more lens distortion it's a bit softer and it doesn't really do so well in the
[1112.0] Stephen: shadows i've still got two two sessions two sessions yeah i don't let anyone know you've
[1119.44] Curry: got those tony i know we'll be around i had the original session nobody wants that
[1125.2] Curry: i didn't have the session five that's about as good as the mode yes right
[1130.16] Curry: it's all right it just didn't have um oh what's that wide mode called can't remember what's called
[1136.4] Curry: now that wide mode yeah which makes everything look faster let's play
[1142.56] Tony: can't remember that for a while we can't even remember what it is what have we used to play
[1148.32] Curry: guys so anybody managed to fly there was a couple of okay days i think oh good stephen
[1157.84] Curry: didn't you have some issues trying out your as shenanigans again i also went flying
[1164.4] Stephen: uh that's one better than we managed i've got a flying job coming up chunky boy chunky boy
[1170.96] Stephen: took to the air this is the a test where i doubled up the rear arms for a bit of extra chonk
[1176.88] Stephen: and a little less wobble oh it's managed to knock a screw loose get that boy in there
[1183.76] Stephen: is that six still seven inch props on there these are seven inch props these hq 3.5 by three
[1190.96] Stephen: which is an important detail because i thought i had a bit of clearance there and uh and i didn't
[1197.68] Stephen: um this prop deflected up enough and uh you probably can't see it's terrible well i've got
[1204.4] Stephen: that's quite a lot of deflection to hit that yeah about two centimeters deflection off the
[1210.64] Stephen: i think when i when i gave it full beans on a test uh so i'm looking at some more rigid props
[1216.24] Stephen: and in fact i've just decided to say screw it and get off this frame and put it on the aos seven
[1222.72] Stephen: which i should have effing done to start with and i might reconsider the vtx situation but on
[1228.32] Stephen: something a little bit more you know streamlined maybe this is the dodgy one from banggood so he
[1238.32] Curry: bought to instruct him together can't go wrong mate can't go wrong well the arms don't wobble
[1244.24] Stephen: that was the main thing i was worried about because i actually a broken arm and i don't
[1249.28] Stephen: think there's that much difference between catalyst machine works carbon fiber and banggood
[1253.92] Stephen: carbon fiber it's it's 2022 comes out exactly it's a cheap carbon fabric with some epoxy on it i
[1262.8] Stephen: think most people have figured out how to do it i i think i just managed to go really close to
[1267.92] Stephen: the ground and i flicked a branch straight through the the back of it um but yeah i've decided i don't
[1275.04] Stephen: even really like the props in in view of the camera so i'm just going to transplant it onto
[1280.16] Stephen: the aos seven and say enough for this rubbish um i did think about going from 2807s onto 2810s
[1288.64] Stephen: but i think that's just me being a flippant idiot so i'm going to stick with the 2807s
[1293.76] Tony: but i do have because they went on sale recently i haven't bought any quad stuff for about two years

[1315.76] Stephen: them a go um they're hq they're uh 3.7 pitch they feel fairly rigid i mean it's a new design so it's

[1330.8] Stephen: i've also got some uh nylon carbon fiber props coming as well the ones that's used dual blades
[1340.64] Tony: on that i must admit uh tri blades are so much smoother than funny you should say that the dual
[1346.0] Stephen: blades are downstairs i ordered them as well i've got seven blades are harder to chain on a
[1350.8] Tony: on a seven inch or anything but you do if you get the tuning right you get a longer get a nice
[1357.52] Stephen: cruise speed yeah get a bit of a bumping cruise speed i thought that'd be like it though

[1539.94] Curry: oh what the teaser trailer yeah for the sim new sim but this is this is because i couldn't go
[1546.18] Curry: out and fly and i've sat here i've been i've been in the flow as uh as we like to say sometimes
[1554.18] Curry: encoding if you get into a nice state we're just like oh it's all coming together and tapping away
[1558.98] Curry: nicely yeah i was held up for about four months um because i bought this asset off an asset store
[1567.94] Curry: to do the weather effects and it broke when i updated the engine version and i'm like this is
[1577.06] Curry: broken can you fix it and he's like oh what's broken and it was like it was it's on an api called
[1582.26] Curry: metal which is the the graphics api that iphones and macs use and he said oh i don't have a mac
[1590.26] Curry: i was like well you said it worked on a mac and we went back and forth like this for like four
[1594.98] Curry: months before i get fed up with it and i spent two weeks trying to learn shaders and figuring
[1601.86] Curry: out how to fix it and i fixed it and in the past week and a bit i've like written all the stuff
[1609.14] Curry: i needed to and got the new level finished and yeah so it's ready to to launch on desktop but
[1615.7] Curry: i'm just converting all that back to the mobile edition to see if that's all gonna work happily
[1622.18] Curry: and then i just need to it looks awesome yeah it's i mean it's not doing anything
[1628.9] Curry: too different it is a new level and it's got the reason i had to update the engine is because
[1635.22] Curry: we've made holes in the terrain which normally involves you flying underneath the terrain
[1641.62] Curry: but in this new version you can like create caves and that which is what i've done i thought flying
[1645.86] Curry: through caves is fun flying over bridges is fun chasing there's still car chases to do although
[1652.02] Curry: they're a little bit more sedate i had good fun trying to sort the air out of the cars you see
[1656.18] Curry: them flying off the cliffs uh i had to slow the speed down so they could make that call now so
[1661.06] Curry: just like we're off but yeah hopefully shouldn't be long um hopefully next couple of weeks if i can
[1667.38] Tony: get the the mobile stuff sorted i'm loving i was loving the um music on that track as well
[1674.74] Curry: the track you know that you put yeah every so often good i i do the old let's go and find some
[1681.7] Curry: royalty free music as like if you guys are on youtube then i think pretty much for all of us
[1689.86] Curry: because unless you're getting like a million views i don't think it particularly hurts you
[1694.5] Curry: putting licensed music on a track because it will just say oh we can't earn money on this but it's
[1699.86] Curry: like even like like a 10 000 view video might net you like you know 10 20 quid nothing nothing
[1706.66] Curry: special but this this was a pretty good royalty free library of uh music and i i did want something
[1713.3] Curry: kind of chill outy and yeah you just have to put that big attribution thing with this many lines
[1718.58] Curry: at the the back and you're good to use it so it's out there if you want to do royalty free music
[1725.54] Tony: you can find it and it's not too bad is that going to work on pants pc's because i think
[1733.78] Tony: in the chat carolyn said uh new sim stuff so it won't be usable on my week-ask pc
[1744.29] Curry: do you still know keeping up with that i need to try it on my old and nasty laptop
[1751.09] Curry: it depends how much it can get knocked down i mean the problem is with that level
[1755.41] Curry: it's deliberately it's actually slightly smaller than the other levels but it's very dense
[1760.21] Curry: because i thought we don't want like five trees to fly around we want more of like you know proper
[1764.69] Curry: woods forest and then we we have to like do this rounds things the stuff all that detail can be
[1770.29] Curry: knocked down but i haven't checked it else scarily say i have no graphics i have no graphics card

[1780.37] Curry: rendering for ascii you haven't got that far yet yeah not yet um i don't know work without i will
[1786.05] Curry: check it will it work software rendering basically yeah good old tty yeah well graphics card is in
[1795.25] Curry: not an accelerator obviously it needs it needs some way of displaying vga else you're literally
[1802.77] Curry: on a dumb terminal ask your ask your fbv sim i don't know i'll i'll test it out before i do it
[1811.25] Curry: but i i have insert a um it's got an option you can click on it and it will display a frame counter

[1904.61] Curry: changes the the levels of when they swap over basically and it the the major thing it does

[2974.51] Curry: dx2 something something x2 plus which is an x um no not an x8 a d8 based long-range
[2981.31] Curry: receive and that that would get like over three and a half kilometers quite happily because it
[2985.47] Curry: had nice big old uh antennas that you could like space out in places yeah but you get an easier

[3860.54] Stephen: automatically try and assume that a new air unit is going to be compatible with your v1 goggles and
